Hello All, I am a newbie here and I would like to say thank you in advance to all you great people who provide such terrific support!

I have a Compaq Presario Media Center SR1834NX Desktop PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Ver. 5.1.2715.3011 (xpsp(wmbla).061009-1511 Update Rollup 2.

I am suddenly missing items in the start menu, ie., accessories is missing entries such as under system tools it's blank and many other start up items. Also I am missing some control panel items. What I think has happened is the operating system has had some files erased or corrupted. There are just so many things missing that used to be listed makes me believe that is whats wrong.

How can I restore the original operating system or repair it without losing all of my current data and programs?

No cd's were shipped with my computer but there was directions for making a compaq cd/dvd recovery set
I made dvd recovery disks when the computer was new and I believe there are also recovery files on the secret partition, but I do not want to do a full restore with formatting the drive etc. I just want to repair the operating system if possible.

I tried doing several system restore points, but it does not replace what is missing.
Help Please

Okay, here is my problem. I have an hp presario desktop. Last night we had very high winds and the power kept on going on and off. When trying to use my desktop this morning a page comes up asking me how I would like to start my computer:
safe mode, safe mode with networking, start windows normally, etc. I have tried each of them, let the computer try to reboot and my computer keeps restarting itself. It will get to the compaq screen and then restart. I does the same with safe mode, etc. I don't know what to do. I thought it might be overheating so I let it sit overnight turned off. This morning I tried to start it again and it keeps restarting itself.

Please help me! I don't know what else to do. I can't even get to the windows screen where all of my files are..I just want my computer to work again! Thanks in advance for your help and expertise!

A:My Compaq Presario keeps restarting over and over and over! XP operating system! HELP!

You may have a corrupted windows file(s), and that is preventing your system from booting up normally. The power issues could have damaged something within your computer such as the hard drive to the point where it only partially works. Are these files important, and do you have another computer you can put this drive in as slave and backup the data off of it, prior to performing a system restore?

O.K. When visiting my little sister this last Christmas, I attempted to upgrade her computer from 98 to XP proffesional, everything went smooth for a couple of days, till the computer contracted the Blaster worm, a few hours before I was suppsed to fly home, and all my work got scrapped. Since then, she has maxed the ram to 512 mb, and bought a new hard drive, western digital 120gb that she would like to use. As we are in different parts of the country, I am guiding her through all setup instructions over the phone...
We got the hard drive installed, and the new ram, and powered up the pc. It detected the ram, and moved to a screen that said operating system not detected. Here, I instructed her to insert the XP proffesional disk into the drive and reboot the computer. Then we get a screen that says the following, I am typing what she is telling me, not what I am looking at:

INF file TXT7 Setup.FIF is corrupt or missing
Status 40847
Setup cannot continue

I tried to boot using the XP boot disks 3.5 inch, but for some reason, her 3.5 inch drive is no longer recognized by the computer. We entered the bios, and it only references the cd-rom, and the hard drive in the boot sequence.

What can I do here? What has been done wrong? Any advice is appreciated since I pretty much killed my sisters computer this summer, when I attempted the upgrade and got the virus. Thanks in advance.

A:New hard drive, compaq presario 7470, can't install operating system?

If i understand this one right . the floppy disk is inside the computer but not recoqnized ? If that is the case, you'll need to recheck the connections (IDE and power ). It's very possible that you knocked one of them out in the process of installing the new HDD.
Now when it comes to the setup of windows XP , does the setup routine offers to "format " the hdd. It should since it's a brand new virgin hdd. At that point you need to let windows XP format the drive ( as in don't skip this step)
On the other hand if you haven't got that far into the setup routine, then you'll need to make the floppy drive functional first then use the WD floppy disk ( which should have came with the drive , if the drives was "retail bought") to check and see if there are any problems and also will help in setting up the XP

I have a Compaq Presario 5000 series running Windows 98. All was well until I tried to boot the computer yesterday and got the following error message:

"Operating system not found on any devices. Press any key to try again."

Pressing Del or any other key when it's trying to boot will only get me into the Compaq setup menu, not the BIOS setup. Everything looks fine in there, though.

I opened the tower up and the cables, fan, etc. seem to be fine.

My floppy and CD drives seem to be working, but when I try to use the Win 98 boot disk I get this message:

"Disk I/O error. Replace the disk and press any key."

I have some *really* important files that have not been backed up, so I *have* to get access to the HD ... once I've backed up these files, then I don't care what happens - I'll reformat if I have to. I have two hard drives on this system (and of course all my important stuff is on c drive) so I could swap them and try it, but I can't figure out how to get into Setup to re-designate them.

Please help!!!

I have windows 7 on compaq presario v2000 laptop. I want to use audacity to record some music from the internet, but when I click on it, it says 'No recording device found'. This is strange, cause I thought the sound card would be what audacity uses to record from, and I dont know what else a recording device would be. Besides on another laptop, a dell inspiron 2200 which has windows xp, everything works fine.

So why is not working on the compaq presrio v2000? I can listen to audio just fine, but I cannot record it.

A:compaq presario v2000 No recording device found

It's...not that simple.

What format is this music that you want to record...being streamed in? What website is the source?

I don't use Audacity, but I've played with it a couple of times...but I was never interested in recording, only the mixing/editing of music files I have on hand. Try reviewing the instructions for using it to record.

As for music via the Internet...I download .flv files from YouTube. Then I must either use a player for that format to enjoy the downloaded video...or I can convert the .flv file to a different format. I convert them to .mp3 files, I'm not interested in the visuals.

What I'm getting cannot record music that you hear on your system...just because you can hear it when on the Internet.

As for recording from the soundcard...yes, that can happen. But only if you provide an input via either the microphone or the external input connection. For example...I can use one of CD players and connect to an amplifier...and pass that signal into my computer via the soundcard...and record the music from the CD.

If we can figure out what you are trying to do, you can probably get instructions on how to do it.

I just finished a re-install of XP on a Compaq Presario 2100 Laptop, Now I have no wireless access capabilities what so ever.. I don't even see a switch to turn the antenna on.. And there is no wireless card to enable via the GUI in network connections. The LAN card works fine. And They said it did have wireless access before I did the re-install. I have a feeling I am making a simple mistake, Such as turning the antenna on, via a control / F? button, However I do not see any antenna logo's, switches or lights of any kind.. I have a Presario 2700 laptop that's no longer functional because the fan apparently has "detached" from the system board, causing the processor to overheat and shut down immediately upon reboot. This is according to the CompUSA technician. According to her, the screw grommets (holes?) have detached or broken, so the screws won't hold the fan in place. She says a new system board would be required, which costs $750. Obviously, this is not worthwhile, but it seems to me that there must be a cheaper way to hold that fan onto the system board (again, this is all assuming what she's telling me is correct...I have no way of knowing as I've never worked on a laptop). My question is: Is there any kind of epoxy resin or other heat-resistant adhesive that could hold that sucker in place enough to function? The CompUSA technician is willing to give it a try, but all she has is Krazy Glue which is no good with heat; I would have to get her the adhesive and she would attempt the hack. I'm willing to give it a try as the machine is now a boat anchor anyway. This is somewhat new territory for me so any guidance would be appreciated...thanks!

A:Compaq Presario system board this possible?

Do you have it open? If so, is there a heatsink under the fan, or does the fan just sit on the CPU itself? If there's a heatsink, then you can just glue it to that, if it's a fan on the CPU, then yea, some kind of adhesive would work well enough, but I would hope that there's a heatsink on it...

Hi all

This is a very common question for which I couldn'g find a specific answer after searching the forum. Please excuse for a redundant question. I have necessary system recovery disk to perform destructive recovery of my PC. The main reason for the recovery is my suspicion that my PC is cluuterred with junk from my past years of PC use. I am having a C:\windows directory almost 3.8G which i feel is too high? Also the C:Windows\system32 files are approx 1 G. I have done disk defragment cleaned up using disk clean and cleaned my Temp folders. Now i have decided to do a system recovery to solve this issue. My question is should i remove my PCI cards that I installed for eg. IEEE 1394 firewire card and additional RAM and hard drivethat I added as regular upgrades to my machine. Will leaving this in my machine during recovery crash or cause undesirable effects to my computer. My other question is if a high disk usage to the ture of 3.8 in my C:\WINDOWs directory a normal for XP home edition. Many thanks for your kind review and response.

A:System Recovery Question for my compaq Presario S4000NX

Hello lak2000

I would remove any PCI cards which you added ( i.e they were not in the machine originally, so will not be involved in the Restore)
Reinstall them after the Restore

You can leave the hard drive, as long as it is not external.
Just make sure to restore to the correct Drive (check the drive letter)
You can leave the RAM

Disconnect all peripherals such as printer etc.

For XP Pro, my Windows directory is 3GB
My System32 folder is 1GB

I should add that I recently reinstalled XP, so these figures will be higher for a system which has been running longer.

Well, the title pretty much says it all. I own a compaq presario 2700T laptop (aka "my beloved p.o.s."), but the good news is i have windows xp and a DSL connection. It has a USB port but is it too old/too crappy to support a webcam system? My price range for said desired webcam is less than $30, so no fancy technology here. Any advice would be much appreciated!

A:Will a compaq presario 2700T support a webcam system?

Webcams in generally do not take up a lot of resources. plus they are also fairly chep. You can get one in your price range without a problem, it may just not have a microphone and oh cours the more you spend the more features youu get. Jut look around, check or any place locally by you, or any other site you want to. Maybe stay with more brandname becuse i am not sure about other companes for webcams. And don't worry about your computer. I had a webcam on a desktop that brely meet the requirements for XP

Compaq Presario 2210us laptop.
XP Home.

Computer came into shop wasn't keeping correct system time. I figured it was a dead BIOS battery. I took the laptop apart and replaced the battery. Should solve the problem right? Wrong. It keeps the correct time when it is on and booted into windows. If I turn off or restart the machine when it is on AC power it will keep the time thru a reboot or being turned off overnight. The problem is when I either reboot or turn the machine off without being plugged into AC power it looses the correct time. Most of the time it will have the time it was shut off or rebooted as the time.

I tried to repair the W32 time and also tried a third party sync software to sync with a time server. This works, but only if connected to the internet. I'm totally out of ideas and really need some help!

Thanks all!

Greetings --

I am trying to upgrade a Compaq Presario V6000 laptop from 32-bit XP Pro SP3 to 64-bit Windows 8 Pro. This machine has an AMD Turion 64-bit CPU, ample RAM and HDD capacity. I am installing from the System Builder DVD.

Unfortunately the install is failing. After grinding away on the DVD for a very long time, finally I get the following message in a Windows 8-looking graphic:

"There was a problem with a device connected to your PC

"An unexpected I/O error has occurred.

"Error code: 0xc00000e9

"This problem can happen when a removable storage device is removed while it's in use or is failing. Properly connecting any removable storage and restarting your PC may fix this problem.

"Press Enter to try again

"Press F8 for Startup Settings"

There are no removable storage devices connected to the laptop. Neither of the 2 suggestions works, they just result in more grinding in the DVD drive and a return to the same error screen.

I just got through doing a successful install on a Presario V6700, which was also running 32-bit XP Pro SP3 previously. As far as I can tell the main difference between the two machines is that the good one has an Intel CPU and the problem one has an AMD Turion64 CPU. Both CPU's are 64-bit.

Letting XP complete boot-up and running the install DVD from Windows is not an option, since I'm trying to migrate from 32-bit to 64-bit and the OS won't allow it.

A friend of mine brought me her Compaq Presario S5140WM Desktop PC for help installing a new graphics card. What I found was that her computer was soo infected with viruses and spyware that some of the files needed to install the new drivers was corrupted and the hardware driver install failed. I ran an online virus scan from Trend Micro (Housecalls) and used Spybot S&D and Ad-aware SE to clean up what I could. After all that, I ran another online scan using Panda Active Scan and the results of that scan showed that she still had spyware and a number of Trojans which Housecalls was not detecting. I recommend that she back up all critical files and run the HP recovery program which was located on it's own partition on her HDD. It seems that she must have encountered some sort of a problem with the recovery because Windows now reports that she has less than 100MB of HDD space available on an 80 gig HDD.

She really doesn't want to go through the process of running the recovery again. Is there a way of correcting this by other means? Before she ran the System Recovery, she had approximately 41 gigs free on the HDD. From what she is telling me, it sounds like Windows created a complete system backup that was not deleted once System Recovery was completed.

What do you think.

A:Low HDD space after running HP system recovery on Compaq Presario S5140WM Desktop PC

I would run the recovery again, and pay special attention for option to format the drive before installing windows.

HP (I believe) calls it a destructive install - as it wipes the partition removing all data from it.

Got the infamous "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" on my mom's compaq presario desktop sr1900nx. It appears on a black screen after the red/white compaq screen. It takes about 30 seconds for the error to appear. There is a blinking underscore the line below it. I have done several hours of searching and have tried several things to get to at least to the system recovery area, but I can not even do that. When I cut power to it and try at least starting the boot process, I do get the COMPAQ red/white screen with 3 options on it. ESC to enter boot menu, F1 for setup, F10 for system recovery. The ESC & F1 work, but that's about it. I can not access the system recovery. It does NOT have a floppy drive, nor did the PC come with any recovery disks and of course I do not have any. I am just looking at this point to recover some pictures/documents from it...then as far as I am concerned it is trash. It was running windows XP. Is this even possible without spending a ton of cash on recovery cd's or for file recovery? I have also tried F8, Pause/Break and have hunted the setup/boot menu for anything that could help - and found nothing.

Thank you.

A:Compaq Presario Disk Boot Failure F10 system recovery not working

Hi Luchipboo, and welcome to BleepingComputer.

That Compaq has a recovery partition, this is why it didn't come with the discs. If you have the user's manual it should explain how to use it.

If you wish to backup the files that are on there first, you can alway install that hdd in another desktop as a slave drive. This will required setting the jumper on the rear of the drive in the slave position, and connect to the IDE data connector in the middle location. You should be able to access your files from there.

I am attempting to restore Windows XP Media Center Edition on a Compaq Presario SR1750NX Desktop PC using the System Restore option activated by pressing F10. Upon pressing F10, the system appears to load the PC Restore files but when it tries to execute them, it generates the following error:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of
0xc0000034 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

No CD's are available as the machine shipped with the System Restore feature on a protected partition.
I would prefer a "restore" solution, as opposed to other reinstall options, in order to maintain use of additional software (such as Windows Office) that came preinstalled on the machine.

Any suggestions on how I might clear the issue generating the error message so I can proceed with the system restore?
Any suggestions on how I might otherwise approach the problem?

Thanks in advance as any and all assistance is much appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario generates Fatal System Error when attempting PC Restore

If you decide you need the 2-CD system recovery disc kit for that Compaq Presario SR1750NX (EL445AA) desktop, you can purchase it from Computer Surgeons HP Recovery Center for $27.00 plus shipping.

That desktop was manufactured in November 2005, so HP will no longer have it available for purchase.

The kit will allow it to be reverted back to its original factory condition - complete with all the software and "bloatware" that came in it.

If the hard drive dies and needs to be replaced, the kit is going to be needed anyway to get that desktop going again.

I have a HP Compaq 6300 Small Form Factor in which I just replaced the motherboad. It is working fine. I can boot to a bootable USB drive and (1.) start a Windows 8 or Windows 10 clean installation. I can (2.) boot from a Linux Mint 17.3 boot able USB drive and load that OS fine. When I try the installation from any of the afore mentioned OSs' (Windows 8/10-Linux Mint 17) they all will get a memory or hard disk error and fail the installation early in the installation. I have tried this on two SSD drives and two standard HDs. I am at a loss on what to try next. Any help would be great. Thanks. -Matt

Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.

Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

Help please,

My computer starts up with the manufacturer's title screen then promptly displays "Operating system not found." I've tried resetting the BIOS to default settings to no avail. I've also tried rebooting with the XP disk in the CD drive. The Windows installation utility starts but whether I choose to repair or re-install Windows it tells me my hard drive is not connected. Do I have any other options? Is it possible that this is a virus, or is my hard drive broken? Each time the computer is restarted I hear the hard drive spin up. Thanks for your advice.

Hi all, I'm having trouble with my Fujitsu Siemens laptop - when I switch it on there appears a black screen with the message "Operating system not found".

Using the Operating System Recovery disc, I have followed the instructions that appear to install a clean copy of Windows (as it tells me "Upgrade has been disabled").
When it asks "Where do you want to install Windows?" as no drives are found, at this point I've tried using the Drivers and Utilities disc that came with my laptop. But after scanning this it says "No device drivers were found". So I can't proceed any further.

Could anyone provide any guidance please?

I should mention that I am able to access the BIOS upon start up, but I don't really know what I'm doing and don't want to go messing around with it without help.

HI, My laptop caught three viruses at the same time, a couple of weeks ago.

Antivirus picked up, and cleaned, the following:
but the laptop started to behave badly. On start-up I got multiple 'failure to write to hard drive' errors, all files are hidden and read only, nothing appears in Start Menu (except switching to Classic View).

I did a HijackThis run (but none of the others, unfortunately) intending to get some antivirus help.

Then the laptop just would not start (it crashed out first). I get the F2 F12 options, but when it tries to go into windows it says "Operating System not found" then goes into an endless loop.

I have no qualms about re-formatting/ installing, etc but there are quite a few work-related files that may not be backed up.
Any advice welcome. Thanks. Rick

My Gateway laptop using Vista will randomly restart, then stall on the black screen that says "Operating System Not Found." Usually, with a hard reboot, it will eventually find the desktop, but this can take a very long time, up to 30 minutes.

Originally, everything was fine until the computer suddenly became very slow and balky while surfing the Web one day. After it became essentially non-functional, I reinstalled a clean version of Vista with the recovery CD, and everything seemed fine for a day or two before the slowness and random restarts started happening again.

Besides the Adobe 8 flash player, all I have dowloaded since the reinstall are Avira Free antivirus and RegDefense registry cleaner, neither of which seem able to scan completely or update themselves before the computer crashes.

If I can get to the desktop and start Internet Explorer, I can usually navigate quickly and easily as if nothing at all is wrong, but it may take a couple hours to get to that point.

What the heck is going on here? Should I replace the hard drive?

A:Operating system not found

Hello Shanker,

In case it may be the hard drive, then I would recommend that you create a set of recovery discs if you have not already or this is the same type of recovery CD you mentioned using. This way you can restore your Vista using them if needed. You should also backup anything that you do not want to lose to be safe as well.

You might see if running a startup repair may help. I would avoid running a registry cleaner. They tend to do more harm than good, and could be part of your problem.

You may need to do a factory restore again.

When I was searching for ways to fix my computer's most recent problem, I came across a previous post with pretty much the same problem that I seem to have.

It was posted by Kahalista in the following thread:

Last Sunday (Sept 25, 2005) I downloaded three anti-spyware programs. They all seemed to work fine and I had no problems. This past Thursday, I set my computer to defrag overnight and when I woke up in the morning, I found that the screen was displaying a message that said that the OS could not be found.

I shut down my computer and when I turned it on again a minute later, it would not boot up and was making clicking noises. When I tried turning on my computer several hours later, it loaded XP ok. I tried to burn my files onto CD so that I could try to reformat, but after my computer would start the burning process, a screen would come up stating that the OS could not be found and the clicking would begin again.

I recently reformatted my computer in May (due to problems I think with a virus although my antivirus software never picked up a problem and it was up to date), so I don't have a ton of files on my computer. But nevertheless, I would like to try and retrieve them. Is there any way I can get my files off my computer so that I can reformat it? (Assuming reformatting will help.)

My Sony Vaio (VGN-FS920) laptop crashed Sunday night, sudden black screen and unresponsive. I turned the computer off and tried to turn it back on and it would not boot. I then used a shareware utlity boot disk (called Hiren's Boot Disk) to troubleshoot and try to reboot.

My OS is WinXP Home SP2. I use Norton Corporate for my antivirus and malware zapping needs.

I used a utility to check the physical hard drive and it passed its tests.

I looked at message logs using a file manager and data recovery application and saw two messages that have me concerned. "Operating system not found" and "error loading operating system".

Earlier in the day, I used Norton Corporate with 8/22/09 virus definitions to check for any malware. I already had two files in quarantine and was trying to repair them. The repair did not work, but the delete function did. I suppose it's highly likely that I unintentionally deleted some sort of OS command line in doing this.

So far, nothing is working beyond browsing programs on the boot disk that I'm using. All the data (from looking at files using OnTrack Data Recovery) seems to be intact, but is inaccessible. I do not have any Windows software with me (I'm currently working in South Korea) to re-boot or re-install the OS. There is not enough room on the hard drive to copy its contents to itself in a new partition and it doesn't seem to recognize any USB external drives.

My laptop is also my telephone, my telev... Read more

Here's some basic ideas for you to try if you have access to another computer.

1) You can actually download a version of xp from a filesharing website such as mininova, as long as you own a legitimate version of xp yourself(be careful though it is not without its risks) and have the serial key handy (probably on a sticker underneath the laptop) burn it to disk using an iso image burning software, providing the computer you are using has a dvd burner. Once burned to disk, restart your laptop with the cd inserted in the drive and providing that the bios options allow for the cd to boot 1st before the hard drive. The xp setup screen will appear and follow the instructions until you come to the repair options and follow the instructions to repair it. This idea technically isn't piracy if u own a version in question.

2) Download and install a version of Linux (I recommend personally Kubuntu) Which is totally free. This is only a temporary restbit as i know you would want XP back but if you have the money, i'd order another copy.

Hope this helps and sorry if it doesn't.

Hopefully my post will help others with a similar problem. If you have the problem Operating System Not Found when booting up your computer, it may be due to it overheating like me. Also, my computer's light indicating it was accessing the hard drive would constantly be on. To fix it I simply cool it down in front of a large fan for about 10 minutes and it works again until I next shut it down. Just recently though I had installed a second fan in my computer to eliminate the need for me to do that to make it more convenient. It was successfully installed and I enjoyed several days worth of not having to leave my computer on to avoid the problem, not taking it to a fan to cool it down, and having the light not be on which made my computer faster ( but louder ). But after the first couple of days, my fan still works ( I can still feel cool air coming from the back), but it seems to have no effect, I feel it may have even made my computer slower than it initially was. Why is my fan no longer effective and how can I make it effective again? How can I prevent the light that indicates it is accessing the hard drive ( the one with the picture of the cylinder ) to stop being on and rather occasionally blink? Is there any effective way to keep my computer cool that is cheap?

A:Operating System Not Found

Unless your computer is very, very hot... 65degreesC, heat should not be the problem... but the drive could be defective... particularly if the computer has slowed down.

But it could also be an infestation of a virus or malware.

However when I came back to my computer it had rebooted itself...BUT...had a lovely black screen with the words operating system not found. The computer automatically took itself to safe mode, and appeared to fix the problem, taking it back to a previous point etc.

However, last night it did the update again, and shock horror I wake up this morning to find the same problem, only now it won't go into safe mode, and all it does atm is cycle through black screen, to a loading bar at the bottom, then a flash of the blue screen of evil evil, then starts that all over again.

I am not completely useless with computers, but where to start is my problem. I have no restoring CDs etc, they don't appear to be with all the other stuff for the computer so thats an issue i suppose.

Read first! -> The title for my thread is wrong, but I can't change it. It was meant to be "Hard drive not listed".

First of all, I hope this is the right place to start a thread relevant to my problem.

Okay, long story short: I reformatted my PC 3 times, and on the 3rd time, I used the command prompt from the recovery disk to reformat it. When it came to a 100 pct., it had apparently failed. And now I don't see any hard drive listen when I'm trying to install Vista or even when trying to do a startup repair.

I've surfed the web, and apparently I need to load some sort of drivers? I have a CD that says "Vista Drivers Inside" on it. And I did try to load up the CD with the "Load Drivers" command. I found some folders on it (E.G "Drivers") but I don't know where to go from here.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Hey guys

Wonder if you can help me. I got a Compaq P2 266Mhz, 128 RAM, 4gig HDD with XP pro loaded on it, Cd-rom, CD-writer.

Ok I got a 10 gig and a 40gig hdd from a friend and have tried to put everything from one hdd to other. I tried to use ghost but because i did not have enough space on the drive could not save the image file then thought I would try to see what was on the HDD's and put the image on to that drive.

I found nothing on the 40gig and the on the 10gig i found win98se so i formated it. I plugged in the hdd one one IDE cable and it said it could not find Operating system. I then took everything else and just had my Hdd on one IDE cable. It still could not find it. I then put the cd-rom on it and it picked up the cd-rom i had a look under the bios and set everything to AUTO and it picked up the CD-rom and not the HDD i put a win98 cd and booted up into dos it said that it found a drive but would need to use fdisk to use it. I then typed fdisk and came up with no fitted drives attached which is strange any way my pc is now in pieces and want to get it back up and running.

I'm not sure why it's suddenly done this? It worked fine yesterday and I haven't been installing or doing anything with it other than word documents and going on the internet. I'm really worried the hard drive is fully dead and I won't be able to get music and pictures off it

I bought it in 2008 and have had no problems with it before. It has been restored once when the CD drivers weren't working due to a bug with itunes and windows vista. It's worked fine since then until today!

Is it terminal?
Thanks for any help

Hey guys, I am new to this forum. I have several issues with my son's computer. Ok to start I was trying a software for my mother to see if it could do any damage for them to use at their office. I figured ok, I'll try it and it most cases if it mess up anything I can usually fix it. To get to the point:
Software used: WinCleaner Complete PC Care
Computer: Emachine
Problem: System shutdown
Another Problem: Operating System Not found

This is what I have tried so far.
I tried using the Restore CD: Restore XP; Get error message cannot open Ghosterr.txt, then get 2nd error message 11030 - Invalid Drive

Tried using operating system cd; gets to Xp set-up: have all three options to choose from ever time I click an option I get a dark blue screen: STOP SCREEN

Tech Info: stop 0x0000008E(0xc0000005,0xF9255F3E, 0xF8E2c778,0x00000000)
setupdd.sys - Address F9255F3E base at f9231000, Datestamp 3d6dd67F

It will not let me use the recovery console, nor will it let me get into the boot screen....

Ok, first of all the laptop that I need help with is an Windows Vista Home Premium - Acer Aspire series (don't know if that info is of any value).

I was transfering some files from one external HDD to another when the computer froze. After it didn't continue working I turned it off. When I restarted it, the computer didn't check the disks. This laptop isn't mine and my own has a different operating system ---> Windows XP which usually checks the disks when it crashes... Because the laptop wasn't checking the disks, I entered safe mode to restore it to a point where the system had had no problems just to be sure. A black screen came up and started loading safe mode, but after mode didn't open so I turned it off to try again. However, this time when I restarted it, the blue crash screen popped up and said the comp needed to shut down because of an error (which I am unable to remember). It restarted, but the computer won't boot up anymore. After the first screen (where you can enter into system setup), a black screen comes up with the following message:

Yesterday My Lg LS 55 express started making a funny whirring sound so i shut down. On restarting i got the message Operating system not found on the top left corner. i tried the recovery system but in the middle would keep getting the message setup failure.

On entering the BIOS saw the hard drive was not being detected so replaced the hard drive with a new one (exactly the same config only larger capacity).

Then the system wouldnt boot from the recovery cd in the cd drive. I just kept showing the LG logo for about 5 secs then going blank and then again the logo etc etc.

Showed it to my friend whos a tech and he tried booting from a external drive. He managed to install Xp on the hard drive but it still will not boot from the hard drive.

After making some changes in the BIOS it is now installing the OS from the internal cd drive but after completing i get the message operating system not found. THe HDD is detected in the BIOS now

Any suggestions??? thanks

Has anyone checked out the PSU voltage? Your MB Bios might include a computer health area that might give some answers.

This morning my computer, Sony Vaio, was working perfectly. I turned it off and after a couple of hours put it back on, to get to my surprise the following message " OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND".
Please help.....
Is it possible to recover my information still?

Thank you!!

A:operating system not found

Im going to guess that the hard drive is failing or has failed. If it isnt completely gone you can try a usb sata/ide connector which may or may not recover what was in there. You will have to take the drive out and hook it up to another computer and go from there.

Have you installed a Windows operating system in that hard drive in that computer?

Is that a factory-brand or self-built computer?

My HP Omnibook VT6200 was working fine up until the point it wouldn't work at all. It went to a fatal error screen that ended with a physical memory dump. Now when I try to boot, I get the HP screen and can go to the bios, but after that it does nothing but say operating system not found. I've been told it could be a virus, power supply problem or hard drive issue. I'm thinking hard drive, but I don't know that much about them. It's been this way for a few months now, and on two occassions it actually started back up. One time I got all the way to the desktop with no problems at all before it crashed again. The second time it got through a scandisk check and then on to the welcome screen for Win XP before it ground to a halt and eventually popped up the fatal error screen again. Please let me know if you have any ideas.

hmm it sure sounds like its the hard drive so i guess you should look in to getting a new hard drive

When I turned it back on...a black screen suddenly came up saying Operating System Not Found.....PLEASE HELP!! My original hard drive is stil plugged in and has been the whole time.....

Remove the power cord from the back of the computer. Most computers these days don't have a truly "off" state but just go into a hibernation when you Start -> Shutdown. Depriving it of electricity for at least five minutes should do the trick.

Secondly, check the jumpers on your original hard drive and the new one. One should be set to Master and the other one to Slave if they are on the same IDE channel.

I had started my computer and gone into Windows Explorer. Before I had done anything else, I had to walk away. When I came back I had an error message that the operating system was not found. I hit ctrl + alt + del, the computer restarted. It did the same thing. I tried again, and tried to go into safe mode, the computer didn't go into that screen. I hard booted it and tried again, it still didn't work. I tried again and tried to go into system restore, that also didn't work.

Any Help, Any suggestions?

Message Operating System No Found all of the sudden appeared on my DeskTop.  The computer has not been moved and the only changes that have been made to it is recently supgrading to W10 from W7. about 2 weeks ago. I have exhausted all of the HP self help steps with no success as well as internet searches for the issue. I am unable to do a system restore because it says No Restore Points Found.  System Recovery does not work as well. Can anyone suggest what my next step should be.  The only things I can get when I start is a black screen with No Operating System.  I have run my W7 repairs disks which do not work, as well as my back up discs.  Nothing is working. Thanks.

I tried to restore my laptop to factory default today and i must have clicked the wrong option because it deleted my Hard Disk. now when i try to start it it says Operating system not found. Is there any way i can fix this? Oh and i have Windows 7 Starter edition, and its a Toshiba notebook laptop

A:Operating System Not found.

Can you boot to the Recovery partition (I assume that requires tapping a key at power on time; check Toshiba web site or your documentation for which key)? If so, try the recovery to factory defaults again.

Did you make a set of Recovery DVDs or CDs?

Hi, I have a Sony Vaio VGN-C1Z/b and have done for the past 2 years. I have had no real problems until last night when I turned it on and after the VAIO logo appeared, the message "Operating system not found" followed.

When going into BIOS, I discovered that it is not recognizing my hard-drive. How do I fix this? Also, F10 recovery will not load.

I just got a free Sony Vaio PCG-885. I went to start it up but I am getting an error. I would junk it but I just spent $50 on a new battery so I am determined to get it working again. I figured pictures can describe my problem better than I can. BTW, the laptop runs on Windows 98. I have a copy of the OS (about 500MB) as well as a copy of the boot disk (about 1 MB). The laptop only has a CD ROM drive and no floppy drive. Hopefully that is a good enough description. Please Help! Thanks in advance.

This is the what comes up after the "Sony" startup screen. It gives me the option of hitting F1 to continue or F2 for startup.
This is what I get if I hit F2.

This is what I get if I hit F1.
Does anybody have any ideas on how to save this computer? I can't find much info online.

The HD is not being detected. This could be due to a failure or a bad connection.
Check the drive for a bad connection or replace it.

Hello, I Have a 4 year old Gateway laptop that just crashed on me. Everything was working great- and then boom- a Gateway screen with Boot Menu F10 or BIOS Settings F2.

Allowing the computer to attempt to boot itself up results in a screen that says:

Intel Boot Agent Version 4.1.08
Caopyright 1997-2002
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting Intel Boot Agent
Operating Sytem not found

In several hours of playing around- I've gotten the desktop to appear twice. Both times, it's up for a minute or two before the blue screen pops up telling me Windows is shutting down.

I pulled out the Toshiba HDD and snapped it back in place securely.
I've played around with the BIOS (ordering?) HDD-CD-LAN, etc.
I cannot determine a way to turn off shadowing or caching without Windows.

I inserted the Applications and Drivers CD- which let me try to Boot off CD- unfortunately this didn't work any magic.

Hopefully some mad genius or gentle savant can help me!

Many thanks in advance, I'll buy the drinks when you make it to Raleigh-

Am working on a friend's Compaq Presario 705US laptop. When booting system the message is: Operating System not found. When I try the restore disks, it gets a message: Error #1802 - Image file is invalid or corrupted.

How (or can) I get to the DOS prompt to reformat harddrive or any other suggestions.

Better do a little research before formating the HDD;
Compaq Presario Notebook PCs - Using the Compaq Recovery CD

You might want to contact Compaq for another recovery CD.
I am guessing that the recovery CD has all the drivers you are going to need.

Hello All,
I am new and I am a computer illiterate. If one of you gifted people could help I would sure appreciate it. I purchased an EmachineT1090 900MHz celeron 20gigHD(mistake) a year or so ago. When I try to turn it on, it begins to make a sound just like a metrodome and then proceeds to tell me "operating system not found." I tried the rescue disk and it only took one of the two. After this I received an error.
It read......... "Windows 2000(I have XP) could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
Afterwards it said I was succesful at the rescue and then immediately told me once again,..."operating system not found," along with the clanking metrodome sound.
My questions are;...Not at all being a computer wiz-------
Can I fix it? How do I fix it? Is it worth fixing(new tower from Dell at $399.00)?
Thank you for your help.

A:Operating System Not Found(XP)

When you hear "a sound just like a metrodome," you are in all likelihood hearing the sound of a failed harddrive. That clicking is a classic sign.

The rest of the bad news is that once it gets to that stage, the only "fix" is to install a new harddrive.

Sometimes, once you have the operating system installed on the new drive, you can put the old drive in as slave to the new and retrieve your data from the old. I've done that with two drives that had failed complete with the clicking sound. The data was accessible on one but not the other, so it's worth a shot if you have stuff on the old drive you really want to retrieve.

I read about enabling the smart in the bios may help me with that but I can't see smart in the Bios setup just to try if it works. I dont know what to do..please help me..

A:Operating System Not Found..please help me,

Did you make sure to install the drives in their original order, for example drive 1 as Master, 2 as slave?
It may be trying to boot from the wrong disk.
