Dell Dimension 2010 Ubuntu to WinXP conversion

Q: Dell Dimension 2010 Ubuntu to WinXP conversion

Hi, hoping for a Dell Guru!

I have a problem with a friend's machine and unfortunately I have 'more accomplished user status' than him and somehow got roped into this problem.

We live in China, he bought a new Dell 2010 with Chinese UBUNTU onboard - everyone assured him he could put on English Windows XP when he bought it so he scrubbed the harddrive and loaded on XP (original disk, an amazing discovery in China!!)

So he got it working ok, but of course it has some issues in missing drivers (no resource CD, because UBUNTU OS). And the place he bought it from will only service a Chinese OS, not English OS, so we are a little stuck.

Drivers missing are
1) audio
2) One called SM driver which I believe is 'chipset' and should have been installed first, but I don't have a copy!
3) PCI (no internet/network card connection working so probably that!)

Issue is that we don't have a Dell Diagnostic disk for this machine or a partition backup (it was UBUNTU). And Dell seems to recommend Win7 as the desired OS on it's websites.

Win7 is not most desirable solution (old system, can't update machines and previous compatibility issues make my friend 'unhappy' to do this) - so looking to see if we can get drivers from somewhere that are applicable.

Any ideas most welcomed!

We looking at the right model >

Dell lists drivers for Vista and Wn7 only on that model.

Lets go with the DEV & VEN numbers form Device Manager>

To open "Device Manager", right click on "My Computer" (Computer in Vista/Win7) select Properties, On the Hardware tab Select Device Manager, if you see any yellow question marks, right click on the device and select properties, on the Details tab select Hardware IDs copy the PCI/VEN and DEV numbers and post them on your next post.

I have 2 Dell Dimension computers, a 2400 and a 4700, both running WinXP SP2, and both with Intel chipsets. The 4700 has been hit with a virus. I have a spare HDD and want to put Windows, etc on the spare 7using the 2400, and then put that spare into the 4700, discarding the infected HD. I have the reinstall CDs that came with each machine. My questions are:

1. Which reinstall CD should I use?
2. Can I set up the HDD in one machine and then use it in the other?
3. Or should I just remove the infected HD from the 4700, put in the spare, and set it up there?

The reason I want to do the setup in the other machine is because the 2 computers are in
different towns, and I'd like to leave the infected one where it is (it's still somewhat usable).

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm trying to reinstall Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 4600 using the WinXP Home System Recovery disk. I'm not sure if that disk was the one that came with that computer or not, but the reformatting procedure was going fine until the screen changed to a black screen with "Gateway" displayed on it in large white lettering with a white scrolling progress bar that animated for a few seconds, then froze. I figured that the reformatting process would take a long time, so I walked away, but several hours later, I found that the screen hadn't changed at all and the computer didn't seem to be doing anything aside from just sitting there, displaying that same image.

Am I doing something wrong, or is there something wrong with the computer itself (e.g., I'm not using the correct System Recovery disc)?

EDIT: I almost forgot -- I'm planning on donating this computer, so I'm not concerned with losing any data on it.

On a Dell Dimension 9200 I downloaded and installed the latest MS updates for the WinXP Media Edition. After the install the computer had to restart to complete the install. I let it do its thing while I got a coffee. Half an hour later the computer still had not shut down and was on the last phase of it. I let it go for another 2 hours to come back to find no progress had been made so after not getting any response from Ctl, Alt, /Delete I resorted to helping the shutdown by using the power off button. Since then (5 days ago) I have been trying everything to get it to boot up again; it only boots to before the bios. That is the CDs lights come on along with the numbers at the front bottom and from then the power fan runs at what seems full speed. The numbers showing at the front panel are 3 and 4. Pushing any of the F keys has no effect. Could someone help me here please?

Do you know what updates were installed? So you power it on and it can't get to the BIOS? Nothing is displayed on the monitor?

Hey guys!I've posted in many other forums but I haven't received much of a response at all! Hopefully I will will get one here! My problem is:I was scanning my computer with Malwarebytes on my user account. I told the rest of my family not to log on to their accounts as I am scanning, but another member of my family forgot and logged onto their user account, and came told me that the screen is just black. There was nothing I could do so I held the button on the processor to shut it down. I waited for a bit and then turned it back on. The processor started up but then it shut down and a blue screen appeared! I have posted what the Blue Screen shows below. I have noticed that when I restart and it appears again, some of the information sometimes changes, like the file windows says is causing the problem! What the Blue Screen shows:"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. The problem seems to be caused by the following file: ati3duag.dll <- this bit sometimes changes to something else when restartedPAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA <- This bit sometimes changes when restartedIf this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. Hi .

Do this...Start/Run...type msinfo32 and hit Enter. Click Components/Display. Post what's listed in the right screen for the 1st, 3d, and 4th lines.

Do you have your Dell drivers CD?

Don't do any of the following yet . I need to figure out the correct drivers you need first.

The ati3duag.dll error...should be your video drivers. They are probably damaged, maybe not. In any case, I suggest uninstalling them (using device manager)...then running the chkdsk /r command...then reinstalling the video drivers.

Start/Run...type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter. Click Display Adapter, double-click the specific item now displayed. Click Driver tab, click the Uninstall button.

To run chkdsk /r....Start/Run...type chkdsk /r (exactly as shown here) and hit Enter. Type Y in response to new screen and hit Enter. Reboot the system.

The command will execute...then boot into XP.

Hi,I was probably infected on the night of Dec 13/14th. Noticed that my desktop background had changed to a green background with black text box saying that my computer has been infected. Since I had to go on vacation I just pulled the internet cord out to prevent additional problemware from getting installed on my computer or sending my information over to other computers on the net.I have come back from vacation now and am now beginning the work required to fix my pc. First things that I have noticed - I don't have access to Task manager, rightclicking in the Tray shows me a grayed out Task Manager option Regedit doesn't seem to work. It displays a message "Registry Editing has been disabled by your administrator". But I'm running in an administrator account. I can't boot to Safe Mode. When I tried, it displayed a BSOD. I can boot normally and displays my normal WinXP screen with a listing of all the users. However when logging in with password, prior to showing my desktop it shows a dialog box saying that I've been infected by "Worm.Win32.Netsky" and assigns it a '5' rating (from a 0-5 scale). Closing the dialog (using the x) leads me to my desktop whose background is now different. There is a program called "Internet Security 2010" that automatically starts up and is warning me of multiple infections. And is also popping up messages about detecting spyware in SpyBot.Bank32.dll and also detecting attacks from various internet connected compute... Read more

I like to hear forum members opinion.
Just recently fixed the issue with Dell Dimension 4300, machine didn't power up when power switch pressed. I replaced original dead 250W PSU with new 430W dual fan and now comp is running. This PC is:
Intel 845 1.6 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally. 4 DMA channels and SDRAM PC133 512 mb of memory.
I also upgraded USB to 2.0, nice 128MB video card and some other goodies.
Now, I got another stock Dell Dimension 8100 without papers, but I check and this particular one has:
Intel 850 1.4 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally. 8 DMA channels and 384 mb RDRAM of memory. Nothing was done to this machine, and it also have original working 250W PSU.
What better to do? Keep the Dimension 4300 or remove goodies that compatible with 8100 motherboard, including fabricating in, new, dual fan PSU and excluding memory, I assume SDRAM and RDRAM not compatible and transfer to Dimension 8100?
Is 8100 machine more advanced then 4300? I know they both pretty old and outdated. I personally bough 4300 for my dad in 2001. Is 8100 was produced later? I see that CPU is Intel 850 vs 845..
Guys, opinion welcome.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 1.6ghz 1gb RAM with XP Pro on it for several years now. It has many programs installed on it. I purchased a faster used Dell Dimension 8400 3.6ghz hyperthreading 3gb RAM with XP Pro on it.

My question is simple. My Dimension 2400 has an IDE hard drive and the 8400 has SATA. Rather than spend days re-installing and tweaking all of the programs on the 8400 I tried the following. I used Acronis Easy Migrate 7 to Image the IDE hard drive to the SATA hard drive and installed it into the 8400. It would not boot, I tried a repair install, then while booting I get a blue screen stop Error 0x0000007B. What do I have to do to fix this so it will boot? What else is it looking for?

A laptop computer with WinXP installed on it currently won't run in the WinXP OS. I think that my little brother might've installed Ubuntu incorrectly on it and it perhaps overwrote some of the vital XP OS files and whatnot. Is there a way to find out if this is the case? I haven't even been able to boot it up in Ubuntu. Though my dad says he was able to boot it up in Ubuntu. What should I do?

Thanks for your time,

Hi all,
I have a spare computer from work, but I do not know the password to log in, and so would like to wipe it. Ergo, I decided to try and boot the computer using a USB thumb drive with Ubuntu on it, so as to wipe the windows partition on the hard drive and then install Ubuntu. The computer boots normally to the Windows XP login screen. When I press F2 or F12, there is no display output. I have tried this with a variety of monitors and with two D-SUB cables (one at a time). These are the Samsung LT27B551EW, LG 27EA63V-P and Dell Rev A00. None of them show either the Dell splash screen or the BIOS screen. I have tried pressing F2 and F12 at strategic intervals (every 2 seconds) but still there is no display output. I also know that I was able to access the BIOS on the same computer a few months ago, but I forgot which displays I used then - I had to wait for permission to wipe the hard drive.
I have also looked up this problem in a number of other places, and found that this is supposedly due to an incompatibility of some kind with the monitor. However, I am not sure as to how I might go about fixing this issue, as I do not have any other monitors or cables which work with the Dell - all my other cables are either HDMI or other sorts of cable which do not plug in to the Dell. If there is a way to use the hard drive and wipe it without accessing the BIOS I would also be grateful to hear about that too.

Try connecting the USB stick before you power the system on.
You can try this too:

Power off, and unplug power cord from rear of PC
Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
Reconnect power cord to rear of PC
Power on and immediately tap F12 a couple of times

Hello to all, I recently did a clean reinstall of Windows XP (Home) on my Dell Dimension 2350. All went fine. Now I need to install the correct drivers. I have the Dell Resource disc and this is where the problem starts. As noted elsewhere, after the reinstall the screen display of the Resource disc is as it would be in "Safe Mode". I was aware of this. As such, the Resource disc Search Criteria screen was a bit larger than the monitor screen. I was able to size it to fit the screen but this is really not the problem it is the following: The Search Criteria options I have from the drop down menus (on screen) are as follows:System Model: All, Dimension C521, DXC061, Dimension DXP0G1, Dimension E521, DM061, XPS710 (Which, if any, do I pick?)Operating System: (I think I got this one) All, Windows XPTopic: (Maybe this one too) All, Applications, Dell Diagnostics, Diagnostics, Drivers, Utilities For the life of me I cannot figure out the exact drivers I am to install*. Windows XP only appears in the Operating System menu. I pretty much know the install order but as I said, I'm a bit confused about selecting the correct drivers from the disc. This computer is not connected to the internet at the moment so I can't download and use any sort of driver detection program. Other searches have confused me further and have provided no specific answer to this problem.&nbs... Read more

A:Installing drivers after Windows XP reinstall on Dell Dimension 2350 using Dell Resource disc

You need, in installation order:

Chipset driver
Video driver (depends on which video card)
Audio driver
Network driver (depends on which you have)
Modem driver, if you use a dialup modem

Go to the Support page and put in your Service Tag. It should give you the drivers you need. You can download them on any PC and copy onto a USB stick for installation on the 2350.
You only need the applications, if you actually use them (eg, Roxio, Jasc Paintshop, etc).
Then install your antiviral software and get online to the Microsoft Update site for all the patches and updates.
Keep in mind that XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and they stopped releasing security fixes for XP and IE9, more than 1 year ago. So they're both full of security holes and put your personal data at risk.

Hi. I'm a newbie with a hard problem: I had my Dell Vostro 410 set up with Win XP Pro SP3. I decided to try Linux. I was preparing to partition the HD by running defrag and chkdsk. I may have started Partition Magic 7.0 at some point, but not sure about this. At one point my PC hung and had to be powered down. When I booted up I got the Windows splash screen and then an Error message on the blue (DOS?) screen posted by chkdsk. Error 100 (bad partition block). At this point the computer freezes. I ran the bootable CD I had prepared with Ubuntu 10.xx. It ran OK. The CD boot program offered to install Ubuntu. I accepted the offer! The installation let me partition the hard drive (apparently, I hadn't completed the Partition Magic process) and installed Ubuntu in its partition. It runs fine. I installed Chrome, activated the email, and loaded Openoffice, without problem. If I reboot, grub presents itself and gives me the choice of 2 versions of Linux, 2 memory check programs and Win XP Pro. If I choose Win XP Pro, I get Mr. Gates' appropriate splash screen, and a bit later, the blue screen from chkdsk. It starts out by offering to skip this part of chkdsk if I only press any key, however it doesn't respond if I do and continues spinning its wheels, giving the above mentioned error message and freezing. If I select the Ubuntu OS, Linux comes up, and, under the directory /media/OS, I find my entire Windows XP partition with all its files and folders intact. Whil... Read more

Your winxp CD probably doesn't have the drivers for your particular disk interface. Download "Everest Home Edition 2.20", run it, and please report back what type of disk controller you have:

This will help us determine which driver you are missing and how to make XP recognize your disk.

I have a nasty nasty infection on my pc. I've tried several things to remove it myself and I can see that the forum for HJT logs and malware removal is swamped here...

So, I'm considering a reformat. My Dell Dimension came with a utility called the DSR--Dell System Restore. It's a hidden partition users can go to to easily set the OS (Windows XP in my case) to it's original "from the factory" state.

I haven't been saving a lot of my files to disc the way I should have been. And now this infection has disable most of my operating system's peripherals--I can't burn cd/dvd, can't print, I don't even have audio right now. I'm in Safe Mode With Networking because it's the only way I can get onto the net.

I've read a few good turtorials about using the DSR but, none of them mention whether I can just re-install my snapshot to my main drive (C and leave some files I backed up to D: or, if all my disc will be wiped clean--including the files I moved to D: ?

Does anyone know anything about this? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

After 10 months, I finally took the risk and I got burned (Thanks Microsoft!), I upgraded from Outlook 2010 Beta to the full version. The "Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book" option is dimmed out and I cannot set any contact folder as an e-mail address book. So when I type in any e-mail addresses that are in my contact folder, Outlook does not see them.

I've already gone to the Mail (Microsoft Outlook 2010) app in the Control Panel. The address book function there does not allow me to make any changes.

Any ideas?

A:Outlook 2010 Conversion from Beta to Full Version

Did you uninstall the Beta and install the Full or did you do an upgrade. There are issues when you do an upgrade. Better off uninstalling everything then reinstall the full version. Don't worry all of you contacts will remain as long as you don't tell Office to delete the contact list when you uninstall. I had to do the same thing when I went from 2007 to 2010. I uninstalled 2007, then installed 2010 and all of my contacts came into 2010 automatically.

Where I work we use multiple versions of Office (XP, 2003 & 2007) later next month our organisation is rolling Microsoft Office 2010 out system wide.

What I really wanted to ask is, has anybody come across a sort of conversion guide from say Office 2003 to Office 2010 so people who have been using 2003 etc. and have very little experience with other newer versions of Office can find out where all the functions (the basics even) are located in 2010?

2007 to 2010 isn't a big jump but 2003 to 2010 is and that's mainly what we have been using.

Let me know if you have as I've been looking on Google today but have yet to find anything good enough that I can use.

I have a dual boot machine that has WinXP SP3 and Ubuntu 10.04 that has some serious errors that I can't figure out how to fix. It happens on both platforms, with Windows getting a blue screen and Ubuntu freezing up, requiring power button shutoff. The problem doesn't seem consistent with any specific program, but does happen when internet browsing, for sure.

Here are the specs to my comp:
Dual Boot OS: WinXP SP3 32 bit and Ubuntu 10.04
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+, x86 Family 15 Model 47 Stepping 2
Processor Count: 1
RAM: 2047 Mb (4 x 500MB DDR DIMM)
Hard Disk: WDC WD50 SCSI Hard Disk (500 GB)
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT, 128 Mb
Network: Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter
Motherboard: ASRock 939Dual-SATA2
Antivirus: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2012, Updated: Yes, On-Demand Scanner: Enabled

It seems to occur more frequently when browsing with Firefox, than with IE, but still happens when browsing with both. When I am not browsing the net, it seems to occur when I have a PDF open. I am not sure if this helps, but I exported the event log for both System and Applications for today (attached). I am not sure if there is a way to do the same thing in Ubuntu.

Thanks in advance!

Hello. I've been having some problems with files in WinXP as of late - generally with files/folders created on my Desktop. A file will often become unopenable, unmovable and un-editable. The name stays the same, the file size stays the same - everything. It'll just give me an error, like "myFolder is not accessible" or it will open a jpg in my image viewer (ACDSee) but won't display any of the image data.

On a whim, I booted into Ubuntu, and tried to access the files there. Success! They all open and are accessible without errors. I find that if I copy the files into a new directory, and then boot back into WinXP, I can read the files in the new folder, but the originals are still unopenable.

I ran chkdsk in WinXP, and it does give errors, but it won't let me fix them, since i'm accessing the drive. I set it to run a chkdsk on reboot, and when that happens - it doesn't find any errors! The errors are only found when running it in XP. The errors are similiar to this:

"Deleting an index entry from index $0 of file 25."

But of course, it doesn't do anything, since we're running in read-only mode.

About 3 months ago, I was having htis problem. I chalked it up to "time to reinstall" so while I was at it, I installed Ubuntu as well as XP. The problem did not disappear, and preliminary googling lead me no where. Then, a busy summer got in the way of any more troubleshooting.

i've recently tried to install ubuntu. At first GRUB did not recognise windows on a different partition, until I had to manually edit it. when i attemped to boot into Windows XP Home Edition, there was a critical error that mentioned something about my RIT and FAT32 partition (unfortunatly i did not care to write down the exact message, at that time). i tried reinstalling ubuntu a couple more times to see if it would change the results, but nothing, i had to constantly add a new line to my GRUB duel boot system.

Hi All,

I am thinking about formatting my hard disk and restarting everything from scratch. I would like some advice please!

I have a 320G hard drive. (In practice this is about 300G)

I am thinking about partitioning it like this

6G - Pagefile
4G - Swapfile
10G - Windows XP Home (NTFS)
10G - Ubuntu (EXT 3)
10G - Windows Programs (NTFS)
10G - Ubuntu Programs (EXT 3)
50G X 4 - Data (FAT 32)

Please would people tell me what they think of my idea and any thoughts they have about it!

PS - please tell me if I am right in thinking I can have the program folders for each OS in a separate partition to the OS' themselves.

Hi .. I have a friend's very old Dell Dimension XPS R400 here . I blew the major dustbunnies out of it and went to boot it up to take her old files out to tranfer them to her new computer.. The blasted thing won't post BUT that is not the immediate problem. It won't shut off with the power button at the front and it doesn't have a shut down switch at the back. Is there anything else I can do but unplug it ? I sure do hate to do that but right now I can't see anything else. Thank you...

oh no not another one, you guys with your dell/HP/etc pcz have to learn to do a wiring diagram of the front panel wiring before you rip them out, its not going to be fun looking for a mb manual for a computer you dont even know what the model is, what is a L__r anyway?

ok basically i have a dell dimension 8100 (bought in summer 2001 in UK) and i want to get extra RAM for it. I checked out the dell website and they say for 8100 i should use Kingston KTD-DM800/512 512MB Kit . Now not only do i not need this much extra ram, its also really expensive, but on the dell website and the Kingston website this was the smallest amount offered for the 8100 series. So i looked around to see if i can maybe find 256mb ram which can also work on my dell, and i think i might have found some, but im not sure. Here are the specifications of the dell website recommended ram :

Kingston (KTD-DM800/512) 512MB Kit

Product Description Memory - 256 MB x 2 - RIMM 184-PIN - RDRAM
Storage Capacity 256 MB x 2
Technology RDRAM (RAMBUS)
Form Factor RIMM 184-PIN
Bus Clock Rate 800 MHz
and now here are the specs for the ram which i am thinking of buying instead :

Kingston (KVR800X16/256) 256MB RIMM PC800 RDRAM Non-Parity

Product Description Memory - 256 MB x 1 - RIMM 184-PIN - RDRAM
Storage Capacity 256 MB x 1
Upgrade Type Industry standard
Technology RDRAM (RAMBUS)
Form Factor RIMM 184-PIN
Bus Clock Rate 800 MHz
Data Integrity Check Non-parity
these specs seem similar but i dont really know a lot about ram so was just wondering if the 256 one would work on my system ? any help would be appreciated, thanx .

A:The Fan for Dell Dimension E

Unless it's a Dell OEM fan, you'll get a "fan failed" error each time you boot the system - the Dell fan has an onboard thermistor that is required by the system.
Is this the case fan or the CPU fan you need?

I have a brand new dell dimension and have been unable to get their tech support to answer. So thought I would try you guys in here. I often but not always get an error message when working online. I am not sure whether it is a dell problem or my internet service provider. I have dial up. A small box pops up in my face and it says . . . windows must now shut down because the RPC service terminated. System shutdown initiated by NT/AUTHORITY then it counts down 60 sec and shuts off my computer. I have no control when it does this, i cannot X it out or make it stop. Very annoying. Sometimes it goes for hours and does not do anything, sometimes it will do it 3 times in 30 min. I have scanned for virus' and it comes up clear. Am running Norton.

My parents have this Dell Dimension 4400 and they told me to fix it or they would take away my DSL because THEY don't have a computer to use it with. Me, I just bought a HP dv2037 laptop and I'm loving it. I've always hated Dell (because HP is better), and have this deathwish on my parents computer... well, today... it seems my wish may have come true. The first problem was with the network adapter. I fixed that with no problem, then when it was fixed I thought to myself... well I have all these old junk computer laying around, I may as well upgrade their computer a little bit by putting some more memory in it.

Yeah, that didn't go to well... Something went horribly wrong, it started beeping really fast and I swear I smelt plastic burning, but when I took the new memory out and put the old memory back in and turned it on, it beeped three times (long beeps). Also, the four LED's on the back were "Yellow - Yellow - Green - Green". I googled the problem for about an hour and all I could find was that I needed to "reseat" the memory... which I did, about a million times. Still... nothing. Can anyone help? Please?

I've got a Dell Dimension 310 Service Tag: JGYRJ91 with Windows XP.
It had some serious malware issues so we re-installed Windows and found that we didn't have the driver disks anymore. Dell sent them and I thought I got everything up and running again, but now the speakers don't put out sound for anything.
My Device Manager Menu has a Yellow exclamation point for "IDT high definition audio codec driver" and it says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" when I check the properties on it.
When I click the troubleshoot button, it says to uninstall, but I want to check here first if that's the best thing to do. I'm worried about getting it back.
The Network Controller is yellow on the Device Manager Menu as well.
I tried several times to install drivers for these two things but the computer couldn't locate them or find newer ones.

If you’re like me you may have sound issues. My sound was glitchee, and I could not find the problem. One day I did find the fix and this is what I did;

Go into the BIOS and check that the UDMA is on. Turn it on if it is not. Set the primary and secondary IDE to auto. Set the IDE hard drive Acoustics mode to Performance. Boot back to Windows and go into the device manager and verify that UDMA is set on both IDE controllers, and if there not enable them. Now run a sound file and see if it works without problems. This fix worked for me and I hope it works for you.

Hi guys

Hope you can help.

I gave my daughter my Dell Dimension XPS Gen 3 (the blue one) a while back running XP and it started playing up. When you tried to shut it down it just restarts and wouldn't turn off.

It works fine apart from this, and we have all become very close to the blue beast, so I am trying everything I can to keep it in the family.

I also took this opportunity to upgrade it to windows 7, fresh install, and the same problem occurs.

I have the correct bios (A07).
I have started in safe mode, problem still occurs.
I have been into msconfig and disabled ALL services, problem still occurs.
I have done a clean boot from msconfig, problem still occurs.
I have run chkdsk from cmd prompt, no errors.
I opened the case up, and hoovered all the dust from the fans etc and it when it re-booted and I shut it down, IT ACTUALLY SHUT DOWN....ONCE! Now the problem is back.
I have disabled different hardware items from device manger, problem still occurs.
I have updated all drivers from manufacturers websites rather than windows update, problem still occurs.

Because the problem was also with XP, I am assuming that the problem is rather hardware than software, and perhaps an air circulation or overheating problem?? I am not sure.

I have been through numerous shutdown guides available on the internet, but all to no avail.

I am now at a stage where I don't know what else I can try, without purchasing a new PSU. Obviously don't want to pay out if I don... Read more

I would have to say it is a hardware problem. Reset the bios by using the jumper on the mobo. Disconnect the power cord, and test the battery voltage while your at it. If this doesn't do it spring for a new power supply. If this doesn't do it maybe a different demigod can help you.

I did some checking on the Dell Dimension 2350, and it does support up to 1024 MB(1 GB) of RAM.

There is some disagreement though about the module types.

The CRUCIAL site advises DDR PC2700(DDR333) or DDR PC3200(DDR400) modules. 2350 Series

DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR333 • 2.5V

DDR PC3200 • CL=3 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR400 • 2.6V

The KINGSTON and MEMORYX sites advises DDR PC2100(DDR266) module.

DDR PC2100

When I start up, the computer whirls and whirls for about 25 minutes before it is ready for use.

If I disconnect the wireless connection until the computer has settled down, I can cut about 5 minutes off the start-up process. I use AVG 7.5 internet security and the up-date download that occurs when I first switch on each day does not help, but it is not the cause of the problem.

Sometimes, even after the computer has been on for an hour or two it will start whirling as soon as I use it, but not always.

I do a full AVG scan on a regular basis, and also check for Windows and Microsoft up-dates regularly.

Can anyone help me sort this out? I hope that I do not have to completely wipe the hard drive clean and start again.

A:Dell Dimension 5000

Try running MSCONFIG to see what is running when you first start up your computer, you can disable application running at that time that aren't essential.

How large is your hdd, and how much free space do you have on it?

How much RAM do you have?

If you launch the AVG free control center and then click on Test Center you can use the Scheduler to change the time that you get your updates.

I used to have an E510 which is from the same era. Those should run Vista/Win 7, but probably only the 32 bit version since they have less than 4GB (the big plus for 64 bit OS is it will address more than 4GB of RAM).

What OS are you trying to install? XP?/Vista?/Win 7?

Resetting the BIOS may help. Easiest way is to power off the PC, open the case and remove the CR2032 CMOS backup battery for at least 10 minutes. This may enable the floppy disk drive in the BIOS, but Press F2 to enter the BIOS and you can disable it.

The correct install sequence for a Dell is (1) Install Windows (2) Install Dell Desktop System Software (3) Install motherboard chipset drivers (4) Install device drivers including Video, DELL Sound driver, Ethernet, etc.

Hey there,

Let me go through what has happened and what I have done. My machine begun having BSOD just as it started to boot up saying that a device was unmountable. I run the util and run chkdsk to no joy.

For the last five hours I have been tediously trying to reinstall XP, which you'd think would be a straightforward task, wrong!!!!! The motherboard only has one IDE so am unable to connect another hard drive before I tell you the problems I've had with the SATA.

Trying to install XP home (have tried several different disks and SP's and also pro), requires no additional drivers and the setup runs well or so you think, it does the format, starts the copying of the setup files, but when it has to restart the computer this where it runs into problems. I get the following message 'Floppy Diskette Seek Failure', firstly there is no floppy disk installed in this system, secondly the BIOS is not set to boot to it, and even when I explicitly put only boot to SATA Drive it still displays this message which obviously means the XP installation can go no further.

I have never come accross this and can only assume the motherboard is ok as it lets me go so far into the setup and BIOS info looks ok. I have tried clearing the CMOS chip and starting again still no joy. I even installed a PCI SATA CARD then ran setup and loaded those drivers with F6 but that gets as far as after the format of the disk then say 's setup disk or CD maybe damaged.

I have als... Read more

Just to add, the ''Floppy Diskette seek failure' even occurs after getting to the boot menu and selecting book to disk, I strike F1 then I can boot from the disk

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 computer. This system comes with an Intel Celeron 2.7 GHz processor 256 MB of ram and a 70GB hard drive. The other day I was reinstalling Windows Xp on this system. Everything was going ok for about 30 minutes when all of the sudden the computer just shut itself off. I did some investigating and found that my heatsink was so hot to the touch I could not hold it without a pair of gloves on. I removed the heatsink and processor and I noticed that the thermal compound was very runny almost like water.

I have not had any issues before this with this computer. Can anyone inform me why my heatsink got that hot and why my thermal past got like that?

I am going to apply new Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound.

A:Dell Dimension 2400

Check your fan. With the Dell passiver cooling system the fan must be working perfectly to pull enough air across the heatsink for cooling. I don't recall exactly how any air inlets are arranged on the chassis, but pull the front cover and make sure everything is clean for air to enter the case.

Hi guys.

I'm having problems finding the correct drivers for my friends Dell Dimension 1100.

He installed a new copy of XP and wiping everything he had but has lost a lot of the drivers and cannot get online or the display sorted.

I have listed the controllers required below. I went onto Dell website however the drivers page has 'page error' on every driver I try. Any help would be much appreciated.

Ethernet Controller
Multimedia and Audio Controller
SM Bus Controller
USB Controller
Video Controller - vga compatible.

If you would like suggestions for upgrading, you will have to post your system specifications. Otherwise it's impossible to suggest an upgrade.

Ok i just bought Vista and installed it everything works fine except it looks like im running in safe mode i know the dell dosnt have a agp or pci-e but if i upgrade to a pci card will it improve it at all? and if so what what card should i pick up. I only use my pc to browse the web and stream my dvds to my 360.

A:dell dimension 2400

yes, for what you need try the ATI radeon 9250 good budget friendly pci card. unless you want to use Aero, then you need a card with Pixel shader 2.0 support, im not sure if the 9250 has pixel shader 2.0.

Yes.. the highly hated Dell computers.. and I have one.. anyway.. I have vista home premium on it.. and though this might not be related to vista specifically.. I was wondering .. people don't like dell because of their low performance and unexpandable systems.. but.. if performance is the issue ( and apparently vista needs at least 2ghz and 512mb of ram to run it properly.. ) then why not just boost up to 3ghz and 2 gigs of ram?

A:Dell Dimension E520

Sorry, don't follow your logic.

While most recent motherboard will accomodate the RAM, many systems (particularly proprietary BIOS ones such as HP or Dell etc) will not accept faster processors than were available at manufacture time.

Just how do you "boost to 3 GHz?"

The system is a Dell Dimension 3000, Win XP sp2, 40G hard drive. I use ZA, Grisoft AVG anti-virus, Spybot, Spywareblaster, and AdAware. Recently I purchased a Maxtor external drive to help take the bloat off of the original 40G.

I've only used the Maxtor a few times to transfer files (just to get used to the thing). Yesterday I tried a backup using it; the system responded that the backup had failed. In the meantime, I also noticed several problems with AdAware, Spybot, and AVG. Neither AdAware, nor Spybot would uninstall, Spybot wouldn't do a system check, and, until I did a system rollback, AVG had disappeared. The rollback brought up a few more problems with missing files and whatnot.

I decided to reinstall XP. Recently, with some help from bleepingcomputer, I did this successfully with our Dell 8200, but the 3000 is proving to be a pain. The first reinstall seemed to take, but I could not attain I-net access as the system didn't seem to recognize the Ethernet connection. I couldn't resize the screen, either. Consequently, I tried doing a second reinstall. Now the system boots to a screen where I can choose one of two versions of XP. The first version (on drive C, I'm assuming), gives the following:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

A:Dell Dimension 3k Won't Load Os

When you reinstalled XP apparently you installed a second copy of the OS. This is far too easy to do when using an "XP CD" (aka "XP Installation CD" aka "XP OEM CD"). The prompts that are provided in the installation program are non-intuitive. Shame on MS (again). Also, apparently you have your internal hard drive partitioned into multiple volumes. Possibly the external hard drive was given the new copy if it was hooked up and powered on at the time of the install. When this is done and XP is installed again, the default action that the installer takes is to put another copy of XP on another volume ! What in the world was MS thinking ?!To properly reinstall XP, first make sure that the USB drive is at least turned off or disconnected. Rerun the install. All the partitions/volumes that exist on the internal hard drive(s) will be listed. Most store-bought systems have only a single drive with a single partition/volume on it. When asked, choose to do a fresh install of XP. There is an option to reformat the C: volume - do this using the NTFS filesystem. If more than one volume is listed then reformat each one. This will completely wipe out all the old installations. You will then be asked again which volume to install XP. If there is only one volume available then choose this. If there is more than one choose what you think was the old C: volume. Finish the installation.Make sure you have all the drivers for your PC available on a CD before y... Read more

Either the monitor doesn't work or you need a new video card. That unit probably cantake an Agp card so I would buy one and try it since you most like lt don't have another monitor to try on the desktop.

PSU and Video Card

I?m at Dell Headquarters in Austin, Texas and I just came across this post. An ATX power supply will most likely not fit in that system because of where the screw holes are and we don't sell an upgraded one for the E521. That would leave you with the 305 watt one that comes stock and whatever video card options can work with that. Feel free to post back if you have any other questions.

Hi, all! Can someone please advise on this?

I have an older Dell, the XPS Dimension Gen 4, running Intel Pentium 4 (I know, I know, it's a dinosaur..) at 3.4 ghz. For everything that I do with it, it's just fine

I starrted to have this problem. When powering up, the power supply fans run up, the video card fan run up, but the machine will not boot up. The fans will run at high speed for a few seconds, then the 'puter will shut off. Few seconds later it will try starting again, and the process will repeat. Cannnot boot up.

Does anybody have any ideas on what's causing it? If it can be repaired?

Thank you so much in advance!!!

A:Dell XPS Dimension Gen 4 will not boot

If possible, try to borrow a different power supply and see if that's the culprit.

Hey, I have recently had to re-install windows XP on my dell dimension 3100, however after re-installing xp i looked on my Local Disc (C:) to find that the 70 gb of memory i used to have has been considerably reduced to a mear 10gb. I have realised however that once i click on the format option i see that it says 74.5 gb for the capacity. I was just wondering what should i do really, should i re-format my hard drive or is there an alternative method, prefferably without spending any money. Much thanks, Mark :)

I had to re-install xp because i got a virus and it wiped off all of my files including windows files.

Do you have just one partition???
Go to Disk Management [START > RUN... > type DISKMGMT.MSC and hit Enter] and
check how your HDD is partitioned and do you have unallocated space...

Did you format whole HDD or just a part of it [partition where is operating system stored]???

Hi all, just signed up here. I did ask this Q on the intro thread but after I read that no questions should be asked there!

I had my Dimension 3000 in standby when we had a power-cut and next time I looked I had the flashing amber power light. After reading up on possible causes I disconnected everything, lifter the bonnet and popped the battery. Checked battery was OK and refitted then just connected the power lead. I noticed a single green flash (accompanied by a jolt of the fans) then the usual amber flashing light. Green light in m/b was on. So I just went round and re-fitted all power leads and gave everything a wiggle. I even lifted the RAM. Tried again - same. Put the RAM back and thought I'd try a different mains socket (why not?) but as I plugged the lead into the PC - BANG! Power lead 5A fuse is OK but no lights at all now......

Any idea if a fresh PS (HP-P2507FWP) will fix things?

Many thanks guys.

A:New PSU for Dell Dimension 3000

That is a base line computer with a barely adequate power supply and the simplest, least expensive of motherboards. You can replace the power supply easily for $35 or so... and with a used one for half that. You might want to borrow a PSU to power up and be certain the problem is not the system board itself.
Look at the back of your case to get the configuration right, as many power supplies will not fit due to the placement of the power socket vs what the case allows. You do not need to use a Dell PSU, but you need to assure the power socket is in the right place.

This is probably a common problem for some of you but I haven't encountered before and need some guidance as to how to proceed. After having shut down my computer (Dell Dimension 4700), I tried to restart it as usual with the power up button on the front. It failed to start and a blinking amber light (left side) came on indicating, I think, an internal power problem. Can anyone suggest how to proceed with solving the problem. The 115/230 switch is set correctly and the power cord is securely plugged in and hot. Thanks in advance if anyone can help. Rick

A:Dell Dimension 4700

Your power cord should not be "hot" in the temperature sense, but the most likely source of such problems is a faulty power supply uniy. They are not really repairable, but are easily replaceable.

The Dell Dimension 3000 has two cooling fans attached to the back grille. The fans
are attached with cheap flimsey plastic tabs (I guess they ran out of screws) that
allow the grille to buzz and rattle like crazy. I fixed that problem by dousing
each plastic tab with Elmers glue - no more buzzes or rattles.
