Q: The hardware has changed significantly, you must reactivate Windows XP

The hardware has changed significantly, you must reactivate Windows XP. I've getting this message since I upgraded my motherboard, cpu, and ram. Also the message say's I must do it within three days, so does that mean I can't have windows after 3 days? I've used that copy of winodows for 5+ years, and never gotten that message. Also for some reason my mouse is not being recognized by computer. Help needed. Thank you

A: The hardware has changed significantly, you must reactivate Windows XP

Did it activate over the internet? It is a quick nd easy call to activate . . no reason not ot do it. . . and yes . .if you do not, Windows will quit working

You will need to load the motherboard specific drivers

Hello, Iíve got a bit of an annoying problem I hope someone can help me with.
I had some spyware that made my computer believe that my cd and hard drive were disconnected. I removed the spyware and then my computer recognised the drives were connected, however windows believed this to be a dramatic change to my hardware and demanded that I reactivate windows and gave me three days to do so.

I ignored it and now the three days are up and windows wonít let me log in without activating windows. I didnít think this would be a problem since I have my product key, but when I put it in for activation, it says that it has been activated as many times as possible and if I want to activate it on a different machine I need to purchase a new license key, which is incredibly unfair and I refuse to do it.

I tried phoning Microsoft and explaining the problem, but they said that since it is a OME key they canít do anything about it, and I will have to ask those who supplied it. I called them and they say there is nothing they can do since Iím out of my warranty period. I only got the thing a few months ago! How long is the bloody warranty?!

Anyway, I have no idea what I can do now, does anyone have any suggestions? Iíve worked out a way of using my computer, but it means I have to live without a task bar, which is rather inconvenient. Can anyone help me please?

My Safely Remove Hardware Icon (in System Tray - Notification Area of Taskbar) has changed the way it was working.

For 5 years, when I clicked on the Safety Remove Hardware (SRH) Icon, I got a small skinny pop-up window immediately over the icon listing my USB devices by Drive Letter. I would click which device/drive letter I wanted to remove and it would unmount ! Simple & Quick (no Fuss - No Muss). See #1 jpeg.

Recently, clicking the Safely Remove Hardware icon has not produced the normal function shown in jpeg #1. Instead - the larger Safely Remove Hardware Dialog Box opens up - requiring a series of mouse clicks to select and unmount the USB device I want stopped. See jpeg(s) 2 & 3

How do I regain the way the Safely Remove Hardware icon worked as shown in jpeg #1 ?

Thanks for any help !

So today I was playing a game on my computer, when all of a sudden the game froze. I tried ctrl+alt+deleting out, but nothing was working. I thought to myself "No biggie, I'll just restart my computer." The computer goes through it's normal boot pattern, I get to the Windows login screen, and to my surprise I get a message saying that my copy of Windows needs to be activated before I can login. Mind you I've had this copy of Windows activated for years, so this message was nothing but a shock to me. I pressed 'NO' in hopes that maybe it was just a small error or something and that it would still let me in, but alas it just logged me off when I clicked the button. I tried rebooting the computer countless times to see if I could get past this somehow, and not once was I able to avoid the Windows activation.

Well one easy solution would be to just reactivate Windows right? Wrong, as I said before, I activated Windows years ago, and have since done a few moves, and have not the slightest clue where my XP CD-Key even lies. Not to mention, just for $%@#'s and giggles I decided to just go to the actual activation screen, but it wont let me because it says I have no internet connection! Mind you, I was just playing a popular online video game before this malfunction.

I've tried Googling my problem and have no encountered anyone else who has come across this same issue as me. I cannot even fathom why this happened, a virus would be an extreme excuse, consid... Read more

A:Reactivate Windows XP??? WHA????????

Well first, do you have internet connection now (since rebooting?) In other words, can you go to a web site, like Google? Your network adapter driver may have become corrupted. Also, when your rebooted, are you in your Profile name and not a temporary one? In other words, If you go to My Documents do you see everything there? If your profile became corrupted it might caused this problem.

Howdy Folks

A friend of mine had an issue logging in to Windows (XP home), said that the domain was unnavailable or something-very odd. So i Went through safe mode and got the same thing, then did the usual in recovery console before finaly a windows repair...still no joy.
I've now got a fresh Win xp Home installed on another drive and we have been using that to access the original one to get all the valuble data backed up.

Because the the drive with the fresh install on is only a 20GB, we want to then wipe the old 160GB drive and start again with a new XP install on there, once all the data is safe. Over about 3 years the drive has just been jammed full of odd programs, games and stuff and not had much TLC, but its never been connected to a network/Internet.

The system came with no CD's so i have used a Win xp home OEM CD that i had, along with the serial found on the back of the tower unit, and just left it unactivated.

When I reinstall on the original drive with my CD and the code from the case, i've got a feeling it wont authorise...does anyone know if it will?
The disk includes service pack 2 and the system didn't come with it installed, so i'm wondering, but it is a free service pack after all, but wont microsoft have the code on the back of the case down as already activated?
I've got to do it by phone as well because there is no internet at my friends house.

A:Will I be able to reactivate windows?

Yes it will, Microsoft permits you to install Windows XP on the same hardware as many times as you need to.

Activation will pass as long as it's the same hardware you had it installed on before.

Good luck, contact me via PM or this thread if further assisstance is required.

Hi,

I recently upgraded to 2gb ram and windows told me to reactivate windows. I take the key off the back of my computer and type it in. It then says the maximum ammount of usages for this key has been meet. I have a countdown in days and im down to one day. Ive never typed in the key in before now so why cant i use it? If i cant use it will i have to rebuy windows?
I have Windows XP Pro SP2.

A:Cannot Reactivate windows.

Hi Master-of-Doom...

you won't need to rebuy XP but you will need to call them to explain the hardware change and answer a few questions then they'll issue you with a new key which you can reactivate your copy of XP with.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate installed in VHD. Now i want to install in real hard disk. Can I reactivate with the same key? I ask because there are Microsoft VHD HBA entry in storage controller and Msft Virtual Disk SCSI Disk Device in Disk Drives in Device manager. So is it the change in hardware which makes the activation fail ?

A:Reactivate Windows 7

Welcome

Any prior installations must be removed, then install on the new HD. Do not give the key when asked and uncheck the box alllowing automatic activation. Once you are up and running activate by phone. You will be ok. A rep may talk to you, just explain and you will be good to go.

I have had Windows 7 installed on my laptop since early September (I had early access to a final build copy through IEEE). Everything was fine to start, but about a month ago it has just slowed to a halt.

Boot up time is longer and the initial startup after logging in is painfully slow. When I start Firefox as my first program, it literally takes 30 - 60 seconds just to open up. The entire system is often times unresponsive and slow. Just this morning I continually clicked on the eject icon on the taskbar, so that I could safely remove my USB stick and it never even responded or opened. I gave up in frustration.

I don't know if this is just Windows bloat or if there's some background process that is causing this. I even ran msconfig.msc to remove a lot of unnecessary startup processes and it still hasn't helped. There's no excuse for programs to take a full minute just to pop up the first window upon execution. Clearly something is wrong. I'm tempted to reinstall the Windows 7 again, but then I'm just setting myself up for the same problems a month or so after I reinstall it.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions? I had better performance from Vista.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to read my problem. I've been having issues with Windows ever since, what seems to me, the last time I updated my computer. I actually marveled at how quickly my machine could run with Windows 7 until today. Before I updated Windows everything ran flawlessly. I just upgraded my PC, completely new hardware. I believe this might have something to do with SP1 for Windows 7, because it's the ONLY new addition I've made to my computer since I updated. Everything seems to run choppy now and takes a much more noticeable time to load anything, such as any games I run, browser, system functions like opening folders and programs. Any suggestions or helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here are my system specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Intel(R) Core(TM) Quad Core i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz
8GB DD3 RAM
Nvidia GeForce GTX 560Ti
500GB SATA HDD

A:Windows 7 performance significantly decreased, what can be done?

Well SP1 didn't slow down my computer. The only thing I can think of is SP1 doesn't agree with some programs. I did find this that might help.

The Aero graphics score dropped from 7.4 to 5.0 a couple of days ago for no apparent reason. No software nor hardware changes had been made. I tried restoring to her previous time when it was working correctly and that didn't help nor did running Microsoft performance repair. It also doesn't change if I switch from my Nvidia GPU to the Intel GPU so I believe it's a software issue with some kind. The video performance for gaming has not changed and remains at 7.1. System is running Windows 7x64 Pro SP1.

The Speccy information for the system is attached.

A:Windows Graphics Score dropped significantly

Are you referring to the Windows Experience Index score? I wouldn't take that number as meaning a whole lot, the time to investigate is when you start having issues with the graphics card.

I ran across this KB, it explains what the WEI does, and shows how to reset your Windows Experience score.

I have a new computer with window 8. My upload data usage has skyrocketed since installation of my new computer and windows 8. Part of this increase is picture uploads to skydrive, I think. I am trying o sort out what is causing the big increase in upload data which has exceeded my ISP upload data cap. Does anyone have experience with this issue?

A:Does Windows 8 add significantly to internet data upload?

If you're using skydrive (or any other cloud storage, this is not Windows 8 or skydrive specific), you will have increased upload costs. Beyond that, there is nothing in Windows 8 that has a very large upload footprint out of the box. All you have to do is disable skydrive and see if your costs go down.

You could be using some third party app that uploads data, but this would not be anything related to the OS.

Hello,

It has come to my attention recently that my startup processes completely hang or freeze my computer when they never did before. I'm going to try and give as much information as I can about this issue(s).

This is a compact list of all of the items I have checked that are running on startup: Audio Manager, Bluetooth Software (x2), Saitek Keyboard Software (x2), Agnitum AV software, CyberLink software (x4), USB 3.0 Monitor, IAStorIcon, CTxfiHlp (I think this my sound card), Java Auto Updater, and Adobe Systems Gamma Loader.

I find it difficult to describe the problem because after a moment of time, it does resolve itself, but the downtime is frustrating. This is the order in which my taskbar processes seem to initiate: Antivirus, Audio, Network (loads conflict yellow triangle first with Windows beep notification), Bluetooth, NVIDIA settings, and finally Intel Rapid Storage Technology.

I have thoroughly run antivirus scans to make sure that I don't have any malware or remnants of malware using both my own AV and additionally an online scanner (with my AV disabled). Thinking that it may have been a RAM issue, I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostics tool, but it seems that my RAM is working properly. My forum profile has a list of my computer's specs, but I will provide any additional information you require. Thanks for reading my wall of text. Any and all help will be appreciated!

A:Startup Processes Hang Significantly on Windows 7

I'd uninstall the unknown AV and install free lightweight MSE; establish a Clean boot with no startups allowed except MSE and any sync, gadgets or stickies you use; check the logs, system resources and all other Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

If this doesn't help you can determine startup delay cause with certainty by Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace - Windows 7 Forums or installing Soluto – Anti-Frustration Software

More importantly though, compare the install you have now with the perfect install compiled in these same steps for Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 based on what's worked best with tens of thousands of installs we've helped with here.

Our OEM software does not require a key for activation. If you installed a version of Windows prompting for a product key, you would need to use the key that came with that license. We do not have keys to provide because our software does not require it for activation.

Like what happened just a while ago. It took almost 10 minutes for my laptop to completely shutdown when it is normally around 1 minute.

A:Replaced Motherboard, now Windows 10 won't reactivate

Problem is the original 8.1 key was preinstalled oem, and you cannot transfer windows 10 to a new device if original licence is oem, and a new mobo counts as a new pc (it is the brains after all). The windows 10 EULA is very clear on this.

If your windows 7 key is a retail key, you can reinstall 7 on new pc, get it activated using telephone activation if necessary, then upgrade to windows 10 (or clean install and use 7 key).

If 7 key is oem, then it will not work, and you need a new licence. You are required to remove 7 or upgrade to 10 from old mobo, if you intended to use old mobo as well (not an issue here as old mobo is dead).

I admit the quality of info being provided by MS support is poor, but the end result is still correct ie you need a new licence.

Hi. I'm posting on behalf of my elderly mother who turned her pc on to find this message yesterday and is worried!
The message goes on to say something about needing to reactivate it to download some sort of protection updates?
The computer is about 5 years old, stuffed chock full with my brothers music files and none too well cared for. Neither my Mum or brother can remember having to activate Windows (XP) originally but it has been fixed by local tecchies several times over the years so we don't know what install of XP is on there.

Any advice really appreciated!

I've looked around this and many other forums regarding my problem and tried pretty much all of the solutions that worked for others. Unfortunately, none have worked for me. I find the hibernate option very useful because it allows me to save my session and keep it ready even if the computer was 'off' for many hours. This may or may not work in sleep mode because the battery could run out before I plug the laptop to the power outlet.

As the title says, my hibernate option was there and after installing updates the option is gone. I've tried reactivating it using 'powercfg /hibernate on', which tells me that the option is unavailable because the system firmware does not support it. This seems particularly strange because it was working fine before the update. Do windows updates also work on the firmware? I thought this was done directly by the user going to the manufacturer's website and getting firmware updates directly from them.

Some people in this and other forums have mentioned the possibility of the graphics card conflicting with the hibernate option. I uninstalled and re-installed my graphics card driver and it didn't bring the option back. I do not see any conflicts in the Device Manager.

Yet another solution was the 'hybrid sleep' option conflicting with the hibernate, but there is no hybrid sleep option in my system. When I run powercfg /a in the cmd, I see that the system only supports the sleep option.

This whole issue happened to me on a previous... Read more

Hi,
I recently changed out my motherboard from a board that supported only a Socket 478 1.7 GHz and USB 1.1 for one that supported a Socket 478 2.6 GHz processor and USB 2.0. The system is running XP Home.

Well after this change I booted my system the first time it would go to the splash screen and then reboot. This was followed by it going to the screen showing the option to boot in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Last Good Configuration or Normally. I tried all the options and was sent back to previously described screen every time.

My only option was to put my XP Setup disk in and do a repair to XP. This worked but my problem is that I had Office and Frontpage installed on my computer. Now when I try and access them I get the following screen: see attachment.

Is there a way to get my Office and Frontpage programs to work short of digging out the original install disks and reinstalling them again.

Thank you in advance.

Hello all
I was running windows 7 home premium perfectly for the last around 7 to 8 months. the other day I updated system bios and thereafter got the message to reactivate windwos. I used my product key but turned out to be invalid. I am in trouble kindly help help

A:Cannot reactivate windows after updating system bios

For an OEM system, deactivation after a bios update would point to a modded bios being used earlier. However, you have not filed up your system specs. Please run this tool, click Continue, click Copy, then paste the results here or paste into notepad and upload the text file.

I had a stock system from Dell (an inspiron 530)

[Windows Vista]
Intel E4400
Foxconn G33M02 (OEM motherboard)
2GB DDR2 RAM (upgraded to 4GB)
160GB Seagate HDD for OS
640GB WD HDD (additional) for Storage
NVidia 8600GT

Today I recieved my new Asus P5N-D [NVidia 750i chipset, second hand came with no driver CD =S ] and installed it. It booted up and then came to an error saying that a vital system driver was corrupted (acpi.sys)
I tried many things, like repairing with CD, booting into safe mode etc. but nothing worked (I was unable to enter safemode due to more system files being damaged/corrupt)

I decided to disconnect the WD HDD and wipe the other hard drive using active@ killdisk.
Killdisk ran and deleted the existing Windows partition so I could install a fresh copy of Vista.
When installing Vista from the CD a status bar appears with "Windows is loading files..."
When it reaches the end it reboots into an cycle that leads nowhere.

My guess would be that it is hardware or driver related and that I may have to change some BIOS settings, but I have no idea what is wrong or how to fix it.

Thanks in advance,

Harry

I just installed a new motherboard, CPU, memory, and video card into my computer. I'm not looking to salvage my old OS install, and have all important data backed up, so I planned to just put the hardware in and boot off my windows disk to do a format and reload. However no matter what I do I can't get windows setup or an OS to load. When loading the installer it locks up at the windows splash screen. I've tried booting off the hdd and it does the same thing. I tried it in safe mode and it locks up before it finished loading all the files. I also tried booting mini XP off my Hirens 15 disk and that locks up at the splash screen too.

So at this point I ran memtest to see if it was my ram causing problems but it all tested ok. So anyone got any idea on how to boot off my disk so I can format and reload?

A:Changed hardware, now won't boot off hdd or disk.

What windows installation disk do you have - is it a retail disk or a disk burnt from your previous recovery partition.

Also, for a test try to install a Linux distro - maybe Ubuntu and see what happens. Even a live CD may give you some insight.

Provided your hardware funtions properly, I suspect there is a driver problem. But that is not certain at this level of info.

Hello,
every time I restart my laptop, I get this annoying message:

" Your hardware settings have changed. Please reboot your computer for these changes to take effect !! "no matter how many times I reboot.

What's the cause, is there a fix or only a clean reinstallation of Windows ?

Thanks

I recentlly had a problem with my PC where when i turned it on the HDD light would just stay on and nothing would start or come up on screen (no beeps but all fans started). I purchased a new CPU (same model and speeds) to see if that was the problem and it still did it so i got a new motherboard (same model) and again still nothing. I changed the power supply with another i have on a PC i KNOW works and its STILL the same. I even used the power switch out of the other PC as well as trying with no ram and different ram but STILL the same problem. I dont understand how that can be possible when EVER part is different from that of what is in the computer. No HDD or sata or IDE drives were connected, no cards or anything but still the thing wont start.

New/different motherboard
New/different CPU
Different Ram
Different case & power switch
NO other cards or devices

So WHY is there STILL the same problem ????????

The stats of the PC are as follows

AMD Sempron 3000+
Asus K8V-VM Motherboard
1GB DDR400 Ram

Any help would be VERY much appreciated because i am COMPLETELY stumped on what the problem is when ALL the parts are different and i cant afford to be spending any more money on the system.

Thank You

Over the past few days I have noticed on multiple machines... basically every single one that I have put Windows 10 on that the latest round of updates has reduced cold boot times to desktop down to about max 5 -7 seconds after POST.

This is on laptops, desktops, an AIO, and my personal machines.

All have SSDs, but the boot time to desktop used to be a lot longer.. like 15-20 seconds.

Anybody else noticing this?

And no, I am not using hibernate or sleep.

Ugh this is more annoying than a real problem. I was running vista on a 512 meg ram machine that was locking up. I took out the HDD and placed it in a 1.5ghz ram machine. Of course different hardware yadda yadda yadda. The funny thing is it installed like a dream which I was not expecting. The ONLY driver it did not find on its own was a the video card and I made that change manually. Of course after all this on the next reboot it says multiple components were changed this requires reactivation. I tried to reactivate it and it failed. Sure enough each reboot it says reactivate but it never does but I am able to continue using it.
I know a rebuild will clean it all up but is there any way around this reactivation loop I seem to be in?

I still have the receipt from purchasing Win7 years ago, it is genuine.

This morning on boot I got a black background and the 'this copy of Windows 7 is not genuine' notice in the bottom right corner. I rebooted twice, same result. I found a thread and did this in an admin CMD window:

SLMGR /REARM

and rebooted, came back up with the genuine message flashing for a second then disappearing.

I went to see if Win7 was activated and it wasn't, gave me the 0x80070426 the service has not been started error when I tried to reactivate it.

Hey Everyone,
Hopefully you guys can help me out here. I recently purchased and installed a new Maxtor Diamond Max 10 7200RPM IDE 200GB Hard Drive. Here's the Problem, after installing, partitioning, formatting, and assigning a drive letter, the drive shows up as healthy, but only as a 128GB drive. I thought that I might have gotten a factory dud or something, but then I looked at the properties of the new drive and it says that there are 68.5GB used and 128GB free on the drive, which would give me something like 195GB, which is more reasonably. The only problem is that there is nothing on the drive at all!

Is there anything I can do to clear up that space? I didn't set multiple partitions, so there should only be one full block of space, right?

Thanks for the help.

I am new to this forum, and I have created an account specifically to find help with my problem.

I don't have the best machine, but it has not given me any issues gaming/browsing until now.  I don't know much about PC's but I know enough to keep it running efficiently (or so I like to think!).
Since I purchased, I have been live-streaming my computer games on a live gaming website, of course with low graphical settings.  Never had too much FPS loss, nor have I caused my unit to crash.  Since about a month or two ago, I have been so slowed down whenever I use - I am now at the point where I can barely play these games even without streaming.  I don't know if this is being caused by excess background processes!  I've looked into that, but I am unaware of what is safe to disable, and what is unsafe.  That being said, I need advice from some people who know what they are dealing with here.
I would greatly appreciate some feedback/ideas/advice here!   Please reply with what logs or files I can provide to help you help me!
Again, I am beyond frustrated with this BLEEPING COMPUTER!  Thank you!

Note: I was unaware of what is allowed and what is not allowed in the file attachments.  I will wait to hear what you guys request to view to make my edit, and attach my dxdiag and system info etc.

Hello,

I am running Windows 7 64bit on a Sony Vaio. About 2-3 weeks ago my computer really slowed down in launching applications, even things as basic as notepad. Basically, where before programs had launched pretty quickly, now there's a pause of between 10 and 30 seconds before something actually opens up. Mozilla Firefox seems particularly slow. I hadn't installed anything new, but maybe there's a bad update or something out there. I checked the device manager and there seems to be no hardware problems. A couple times last week after logging in from the Windows login screen it sat their for 5-10 minutes with a black screen before finally logging in. After that, it froze when I tried to open up software, although it did that only a total of two times. I use AVG Antivirus Free Edition 2013 as well as the occasional scan from Malwarebytes' Anti-malware. I tried Advanced System Care (free) and that didn't help, nor did SlimCleaner. the problem that i am having with my computer rite now is that every 10-15 sec my computer is freezing up and then resuming. this is really annoying when watching a movie and esspecially when listening to music. This problem has always persisted since i rebooted my laptop and ever since the reboot the pc has been running much slower in games and such. I do not think this is a driver problem because i have downloaded all the dell drivers and ended up just sticking with the drivers i have from the installation cd. I do not think that this is a result of a virus because for the most part i am not connected to the internet and would appreciate any help possible.

Hey

I recently decided to completely clean up my PC because the CPU and GPU temperatures were a bit high. So I cleaned fans, graphics card, changed CPU thermal paste etc.. Then after reassembling everything back together my PC would boot but it wasn't showing anything, just a blank screen. So after a lot of testing of checking whether everything was put in the correct place, i found out that one of my RAM sticks was causing the problem. I removed it and then my PC was booting just fine. (Btw in the process of testing I removed the CMOS battery and my BIOS settings were reset, so I had to change the RAM voltages again)

After all that my PC is really slow right now. Even for simple tasks like opening a browser or watching an HD movie on VLC, it lags a lot. I tried lots of different things to get it fixed. I'm 99% sure that my BIOS settings are exactly the same as they were before.

So I would appreciate if I could get any help from you guys! I attached some screenshots as well!

Thank you!

A:PC significantly slower after removing bad RAM (8GB -> 6GB)

You have three stick of ram install. You have a dual channel motherboard.
Two or four sticks of ram will run in dual channel.
One or three sticks of ram will run in single channel.
Single channel is slower than dual channel.

Could you post a screen shot of this?

I bought my first laptop about a year and five months ago, right before I started my quest for post secondary education. Naturally, as I was gone I had no access to my desktop at home. I let my father, who is computer illiterate, use my computer. I was hoping that he would be able to learn how to use it. Now that it's winter break and I'm back home, I boot up my desktop only to find it significantly slower than I remember. This desktop wasn't built to be slow or sluggish, I have some good hardware in here. I figured it could be malware, but I also thought it could be a faulty harddrive which is on the brink of failing. Please give me some help :D I understand it's New Year's Eve, so I don't expect an answer until Monday. But I will continue to check here and my email for any notifications. Thanks a lot, and have a happy New Year!

So I got this problem for a few months now, and the reason that I am asking for help only now, It's because the FPS dropping seems to effect my computer even when not inside a game.

Here's the deal, While back when it first started it only happened while playing massive games like GTA IV,Hunted The Demons Forge, Crysis and such. Later it spread to games which my computer should handle with no problems such as: Startcraft II (at the lowest setting), Duke Nukem Forever, Dawn of War II - Space Marines, COD... and eventually to every other game I tried like: Heroes V, VI, King Arthur: Fallen Champions, pirates of black cove...

after my games got infected, my explorer was next :[. every few hours my explorer
stop responding even when doing nothing! and needs to be restarted.

So what can I do?

Hi, I'd like my log reviewed and assessed please. My computer has recently slowed significantly and I don't know why. I cleaned the drive, defragged it. removed a lot of software as well as deleted lots of files. I went into the task manager and looked up all of the applications and they all seem legitimate. So i downloaded Trend Micro Hijack this and wound up here. I went to update my drivers a couple of days ago, one of them being Intel Rapid storage technology and after I updated the software I realised the restarting took an extra minute. My laptop would now boot into a black screen where my desktop wouldn't show but I would be able to ctrl+alt+del. I believe the program that is causing this problem was the 'Delayed launcher.' as my boot times before were within 30 seconds. I have tried going into the task manager>start-up and disabling the program yet every time I boot my laptop the same thing happens. I have attached 2 pictures showing the location of the program. Can someone help me with this?

My computer has slowed significantly in a matter of days. I tried the cures in the other topic to no avail. Basically my CPU is at 100% all the time especially in the internet browser but to the point where I can't really open any other programs. I tried to get the Gmer logs but after like an hour of scanning I got a blue screen and my computer restarted. The blue screen was closed shortly after it opened so i couldnt read the error message. If someone could just look at the logs for anything suspicious it would be greatly appreciated. By the way since i was directed here from the Hijack this site i decided to include the log figuring it could only help.Thank you.

Running an old Dell Dimension 4400 with a 2ghz processor. I removed the
20GB hd that came with it and replaced it with a 160GB Maxtor. After a sale at Staples I came away with a 250gb Seagate HD. Then the reactivation notice popped up. What had I done (other than adding too much drive capacity) that should worry Microsoft. They didn't seem to mind an additional DVD burner but the drive shook them up. I called and argued a case to someone from India who allowed me to continue my PC life.
Now the system (over time) has gotten sluggish. Any number of conflicts could have occurred. I'd like to refomat the one partition and reinstall XP. Is there a chance that I am going to see the dreaded reactivation window again? What should the prudent XP user do?

A:Why do I need to reactivate?

Windows takes a snapshot of your hardware profile during installation and any major changes will result in you needing to reactivate your license again. If you had added the new hard drive as a slave, you would've been alright but as you are using it as your master, Windows isn't sure it is the same PC still.

All you will need to do is call Microsoft, answer some questions to ensure your copy of Windows is genuine and they'll help you reactivate.

Hope that helps :)

Hi all, this is my first post here and looks like a great place to share info.
Hope someone might have some advice on an issue I've been tryin to get resolved.

I have 4 desktops and one laptop in use, and they are running win xp sp2, with updates, and Norton AV 2003, and Zone Alarm 4.5.

I am having a problem with ONE of the machines, a 1.8ghz with 512 ram, 120GB HD w/ 8mb cache.

What happens, is a huge slowdown whenever a web page is loaded that has Javascript in it. For example, if I disable scripting, the pages will fly open (although there are some limitations in the functions of some sites without it), At this time I am using different browsers (IE and Maxthon), and keep turning scripting on every now and then to perform certain things certain sites require (i.e. form submission).

I have run a full AV scan, an alternative online AV scan (both in safe mode), as well as two anti-spyware programs (ewido and adaware), and found NOTHING. I checked the startup group and there is nothing unusual in there.

Looking for ideas of what else could be causing this problem??

The problem does not occur on the other machines that have similar specs. If I cant figure it out soon, I am considering a complete reinstall of OS, something I'd rather avoid.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I've had this problem for a few days now, and I can't quite figure out what's causing it. I looked into it, and it looks exactly like the CouponDropDown ads, but none of the fixes listed on this website's self-help seemed to apply. My computer also seems to have increased startup times, and chrome (the only browser I use) seems to be getting the worst of it. Here are the FRST logs, and hopefully someone can help!

I used to be able to play CS:GO and League of Legends with no problems. Recently, I have been having many problems with CS:GO and League of Legends. For CS:GO, it takes a long time for me to join games. By the time I join a game, the game is close to over, and I only get around 15-20 fps. This is a stark contrast from my fast loading into games and average 50-60 fps. League of Legends is in a worse state. When I try to load into a game my ping is about 300, whereas before it was 90 and I get disconnected when I reach 100%. Neither of these games have had significant changes that would change my gaming experience this much. I have also my computer is slower in general, not just while playing video games. Recently, I encountered a problem with my mouse while playing a game. My mouse lags severely, to the point where I cannot aim in the game. This is becoming really frustrating. The strange thing is that this only happens while I am actually playing the game, not while the game is running; meaning that in the game menus there is no lag. As soon as I connect to an online server, the lag and the choppy movement kicks in.

Another problem is with the buttons. In the game, sometimes when I aim the gun, for some reason it remains aiming even after I have released the button, so for some reason it's under the impression that the button is still pressed.

Another thing worth mentioning is that during normal computer use, the mouse works perfectly fine.

Computer Specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 2.80 GHz
4.00 GB DDR2
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT
Vista Ultimate 64-bit

Mouse:
Logitech EX100 Wireless Mouse.
Bought as Keyboard + Mouse Combo

I have tried updating drivers. I haven't tried lowering graphics because I get good FPS in the game, so that's not the issue. Any advice is appreciated.

I'm thinking of getting a new monitor, because mine is a 15 inch, 8 year old lcd. If I got a 22 inch monitor at 1680 by 1050, and used my current monitor as a secondary screen, would that significantly decrease performance on games? I have a geforce 8500 gt w/ 256 mb vram, and i would only be playing games like Battlefront II and GW. currently, i get about 60 fps on GW.

A:Would a second monitor significantly decrease performance?

The video display between the old and new displays would be very different in quality and video speed

12 days ago my motherboard burned, quite literally.
So I replaced my motherboard, my RAM and my processor.
When I turned on my computer it worked fine, except I had a notification saying windows needs to activate. When I tried entering my legal key - it didn't let me input some of the digits.

When my uncle moved to London, he gave me this computer with vista already installed on it, only he forgot to leave me the installation CD - so I can't reinstall vista.
I do, however, have an XP installation CD. But I'm afraid I'll lose all my data if I uninstall vista and install XP instead (I don't have a way to backup 140GB of important data).

I currently have 20 days to activate.

Please help, what do I do?

Thanks in advance.

A:Vista needs to reactivate, and won't take my key.

Hello and welcome, Shizzle!

Download MJBF, HERE, and see if the key it finds it the same as the one you currently have. Also, try calling your Uncle - maybe he has the key somewhere or perhaps he could send the installation disc.

After formatting & reinstalling Win XP, it keeps prompting me to activate Win XP over the net.

If I "reactivate" my Evesham PC with the legal copy of XP I own, will I run into any problems. You see my hardware isn't the same as it was on the prev install (one PCI card different).

The last thing I want to find is that Micro$oft have "locked me out" of my own PC.......or am I just too paranoid.

Thanks again for your help guys. MB

My laptop came with Windows XP Home edition. The product key is on a sticker on bottom of laptop.

We had to reformat the HD drive last year and the person who did this for us installed an invalid copy of Windows XP Professional.

Question: How can I reinstall the legal windows XP home edition without losing information on my computer. I am looking for the STEPS to do this.
i.e. do i have to backup everything first and if so how can i do this? the actual disk did not come with computer rather it was preinstalled.

Thanks so much.

I copy / pasted this now closed question - because I did exactly the same
I manually deactivated the sound output (My sound card is Realtek High Definition Audio).
Now this would be quite simple to solve if I could just click the "activate" button, but as I need to select the sound output fist, which no longer is in the list of sound devices as it is deactivated, I can't simply click the "activate" button.
I've looked everywhere I will bother looking, included but not limited to sound card options, the device manager, Windows Help (The best advice I got was to check if I had a sound card).
All in all this looks like bad design to me, but there obviously has to be a way to solve it.

Hi Lotus,

1. Please go to your Control Panel > Your Profile > Edit Your Details
Enter the Computer Specs. You can use the Belarc Report in my Signature to get the details. It is hard to help you without those details. Please do not post the Belarc Report. It contains information you do NOT want posted on the internet.

2. Can you post a snapshot of your Device Manager?
Click on View > Show hidden devices
If you don't know how to make a snapshot, just ask.

Thanks

I am considering the addition of a video streaming device (Roku). In anticipation of making that connection I resurrected a D-Link Router I purchased many years ago. It's the DI-604 [wired, not wireless]. I connected in to my Motorola SURFboard SB6121 modem. Before I made the connection I checked my download speeds. I was consistently registering 58Mbps. After the router was added to the circuit my download speeds dropped consistently to 36Mbps.

Are there any adjustments I can make to that router, my computer, my modem to re-gain some of the speed I have lost?

Is that reduction in download speed likely to make HDTV video streaming a frustrating, unsatisfactory experience?

Thanks

A:Router significantly decreased download speed

I would definitely advise purchasing a new router, since that particular model is really old technology.

I use Firefox 2.0 and have high speed internet. I had been used to pages loading in just a couple seconds but lately many pages have been noticeably slower. It's not quite like dial-up bad but certainly wouldn't even be up to the standards of lite-speed cable. Anyway, here is my hijackthis log. I didn't notice anything wrong but hopefully I'm skipping something.

Hello everyone,

I'm not sure whether this is software or network-related so I'm going to post it as a software issue and then make a network-related topic if it turns out that's the cause.

So I tried playing a couple of games last night through my recently installed Steam. The games loaded up fine but I noticed a significant decrease in load time from before. For instance, the GTA V intro screen took about 7 seconds to load before I reinstalled my OS. Now, it takes significantly more time. I've also noticed this happens when it comes to connecting to GTA: Online. What used to be an instant transition now takes at least 5 seconds longer.

I ran the Steam installer as Admin and selected "UNBLOCK" before installing. The only AV I have is MSSE and Windows Firewall. I've added exceptions to the applications in the Firewall. Does anyone know if this is network-related or is it Steam? Any tips would be helpful.

Things I can try is uninstalling and reinstalling my Nvidia drivers. They are currently on 362.00 version (everyone I've talked to says they are the most stable). I can also try playing "hardwired" (I have both wireless and Ethernet). I can also try updating the Ethernet driver.

hi, so for some reason, my laptop has been running really slow lately.

Every 2-3 minutes, my screen would 'freeze' for about 1 minute. the blue circle thing would replace the mouse pointer.

I have a HP Pavilion dv7-1273cl notebook pc.

umm, I don't know what to do next. It took me 6 minutes just to type this because of the freezing.

Thanks for the help in advance!

I wanted to say thanks for helping me out. I really appreciate it. i waited for 2 days for a response, then I just gave up.

Instead I ended up reformatting, and everything's great now.

thanks again

Hey folks, I need a little help getting an XP computer running again after I replaced a fried power supply and motherboard.

When I start up the computer now, it displays the lists of users as normal, but after I select one, it says that windows needs to be activated. I tell it to go ahead and do so and it thinks for a moment, then tells me that it's already activated, and loops back to the login screen.

I've tried starting up in Safe Mode to try to get around it somehow. Regular safe mode just tells me that I need to be in normal windows login to activate and reboots. Safe Mode with command prompt does the same, but I can get into windows settings with the .cpl files, so I'm hopeful that there's something in here I can do in here to kill this activation window.

I've asked around a few other places and been told to try creating a new hardware profile and see if it'll start up that way, to just call MS and wait on hold and see what they say, or to use the system restore disks that came with the guy's computer (eMachine W1800). I don't think the disks will work, as OEM restore CDs are generally keyed to the manufacturer's hardware, and since the motherboard I put in is compatible, but not the exact same as what the computer came with, I'd most likely end up with the same problem after restoring.

Any other suggestions? I'd sure hate to spend god knows how long on the phone waiting for MS support to tell me a quick little ... Read more

Talk about annoying. I turned on my USB scanner! How dare I! Clearly I must be a pirate! Having to waste time on the phone with someone I can hardly understand trying to convince them I really did buy it is freaking annoying.

I am so close to going back to XP. The only thing stopping me is that my wife will give me grief for buying Vista and then going back to XP. That and I will only get to use 3GB of the 4GB installed. Though it is mostly the big fat I told you so I am dreading.

In 2 years I activated XP 3 times. In 6 months I have already exceeded that by more than double. Last time it did it to me because I upgraded the video drivers like a deviant little thief. Because only deviant little thieves upgrade their video drivers.

Is there anyway to make Vista more tolerant of normal usage?

A:Turned on my scanner and had to reactivate!

I added an external hard drive, keyboard and mouse. I guess I should consider myself lucky that I haven't had to reactivate mine as well. Microsoft sucks for foisting this activation crap on the end user.

I have Win 7 x64 Ultimate (retail). This week I'm changing the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and C: drive, and I'll be bringing the old drives in as spares. Not much of the old PC will be left...just the case, DVD-RW, and power supply :-)

I'll be reinstalling Win 7 because I'm changing the C: drive to a new SSD.

What usually happens in these cases? I'll use the same license key but I'm guessing Win 7's activation will say "whoa, you're trying to cheat and reuse this key".

Is there a way I can "deactivate" on the old system before shutting down and then reactive on the new? I think the answer is no - you just activate on the new. And if it says no, is the process of calling Microsoft straightforward and obvious? And what do they ask?

I'm 100% legit here...just trying to work with the technology.

I bought this computer on craigslist and the disk showed some errors, so I went to migrate to an SSD using Clonezilla. The migration to the SSD failed, so I put the HDD back in the system. Now it's telling me I need to reactivate, and the key is not valid.

Is this repairable? It is a Lenovo X61s laptop with a Vista Business DVD License on the bottom. Was upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate.... or so I was told.

Your installation is counterfeit.
You are using an OEM_SLP Key from a Hewlett Packard machine - your is a Lenovo built in 2007 - which cannot possibly have had Windows 7 installed by the manufacturer.
You need to reformat and reinstall with genuine media and Key.
