I ALWAYS have problems unpacking files. Any help?

Q: I ALWAYS have problems unpacking files. Any help?

Whenever I download a large archive, whether it's 7z, RAR format or some bin format (that's unpacked via provided installer), I always have problems unpacking.

What happens is that, while extracting, I receive errors about some files that are corrupted and cannot be extracted. The FUNNY thing is, if I try to extract the same archive again it says some other file is corrupted while the one that was "corrupted on my first try now extracts properly. I don't know how is that even possible.

1) I know that the archives I download/get from friends are not corrupted, and I can trust those sources.
2) I've tried basically everything, like re-downloading, trying with numerous attempts, and updating the software I use (7z, Win RAR, or Daemon tools for those bin archives I mentioned).

Any help? Thanks,

I'm wondering if your hard drive has some bad sectors. You might run a disk check program to see. Your drive manufacturer will probably have one.

My problem is that if u wanna unpack an exe file, could be a setup exe., then it will save the data in the temp folder (Windows drive), and my problem is that i made a patision (or however to spell that in english.. ) so i got 10 gb for windows, so if my windows ****s up i will be able to just reinstall without worrying too much for my files. (Programs like registery mechanic will often solve the registery prob.) Anyways, this means i don't have enough space on my c-drive, as i should have given it more ofc.. Should have given it 15 instead, as my programs are on that drive aswel... anyways! thats not the matter.. the matter is that when some exe. files wants to extract they want to extract huge amounts of software before installing, im talking about 1,3 gb + here, and i cant get that much space without deleting half of my programs or so.. SO what i want to know, is there a way to manualy unpack an exe. file ? Or is there a way to change its unpacking destination, so it won't save in temp.. thanks for all upcomming answer.

A:Hard times unpacking exe files.

Change the place where it unpacks to the other partition you have for files, programs etc. This should be on the extraction wizard.

Hi guys, I have just recently upgrade my computer from Windows XP to Windows 7, but since then I haven't been able to install most games.

During installation, each game has a different error message but generally, the problem seems to lie in games that require unpacking large files, such as *.bin. For example, while trying to install Assassin's Creed 3, this message appeared:

An error occurred while unpacking: archive corrupted! Unarc.dll returned an error code: -7. ERROR: archive data corrupted(decompression failed)Click to expand...

Decompression failed with error code: -12. Bad CRC in the archive data0.binClick to expand...

Please help me, I'm going mad.

Computer's spec:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600)
Processor: Intel Core i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz (4CPUs)
RAM: Elixir DDRam 3 2GB x2
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
DirectX 11
Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D
BIOS: 9/24/9 Ver: 08.00.15

What I've tried so far:

Updated drivers of graphic card, mainboard, etc.
Ran as Administrator.
Installed in safe mode.
Tried installing these games in another computer (everything's fine)
Reinstalled Windows 7.
Formatted entire HDD, reinstalled Windows XP (now even Windows XP has this problem)
Bought a new HDD

first of all, hello to you all

as they thread title may allude; i am a little disgruntled at my first atempt to install my brand new genuine Windows 7 x64 Home Premium OEM

after the first 4 attempts at installing Win7 i managed to get around the installer asking for 'unknown device driver' by unplugging my card reader. I have been running XP x64 OEM for some time and have re-installed it at least 5 times and have never had any problems what so ever; if only the same were true for Win7!

having done some research it became clear that Win7 should take no more then 30-40 minutes to install; but here i am 23hrs later and it STILL hasn't even started installing yet; its still 'unpacking windows files' @ 99%...

has anyone else had this problem? if so, what did you do to fix it?

thanks in advance

A:23hrs - "unpacking windows files"

Welcome to Seven Forums.

Nice job on the system specs.

Sorry your having problems.
How long has it been at 99%?

We've made a list of questions which are the result of reoccurring incidents seen so far.
If you can have a look at these and give us your answers we'll be able to give you better suggestions.

Questions to use for help with Installation Issues

We have also seen people with AMD mother boards having these problems, try taking out all memory cards except one, if that doesn't work then move the memory card to a different slot and try again.

Do you have HyperTransport function settings in your BIOS?
There are two options in the BIOS Setup called K8 -- KN HT Speed and K8 -- KN HT Width, both are normally set as Auto. Change them to K8 -- KN HT Speed to 1x and K8 <-> KN HT Width to 8 8. You can change them back after the install.

If this doesn't work, then reply with more details and we'll try again.
Just read a thread where a guy with an AMD board was having similar problems said he turned off 'Cool 'n Quiet' setting (the feature that turns down the fan RPM). He also found a bad RAM stick by running memtest86+. After that Win7 installed with no problem. Might be worth a try.

I've downloaded a large application (Quicken) in .rar format. I extracted it with Winrar and now I have 18 tidy little bundles of 15mb each in the intended directory. Bad news is I haven't the faintest idea what to do with them now. there aren't any .exe or installation files as far as I can see--just those 18 bundles. Can anyone straighten me out?

I recently ordered a new PC from ironsidecomputers and it didn't work when I plugged it in, I later pulled the front connectors loose replugged them and was able to get it running but the reset powered it on power button reset the system. I was happy but PC was in the wrong spot so I turned it off put it where it need to be and nothing I tried all other outlets then the one that worked previously but nothing. I referred to manual and seemed original set up was wrong but I'm not getting to work in the right set up. What am I doing wrong is it just power problem? I would be talking to tech but it's the weekend. A:PC has no power after unpacking

Sounds like to me the front panel connection is hooked up wrong, which could do some damage to the system over time. If your not comfortable taking it apart and reconnecting all if it, I'd wait and take it back to the place where you bought it and have them look at it and fix it.

Hello everyone
It's a long time since I don't write an article in MA but I decided to explore some important concepts to analyze malware.

"Understanding packers and detecting a packed file" is a topic treated by @kram7750 in this thread :

I will talk to unpacking
The manual unpacking is definitely the most complex to learn. Although a malware can be sometimes much more difficult by a packer, it is much easier to explain the theory behind a malware, rather than explain the operation of a packer. This is primarily due to two reasons. First, you need to have a unpacking knowledge of a wider number of arguments: it is not enough to understand the machine code and know that debugging. In addition, the term "packer" is very generic. The packer implement all sorts of anti-reversing techniques and even an entire book would suffice to explain them all in detail.

I will try to make myself understood even by those who don't have a clue what a packer. However, it is useless to deny that you have to engage, and not just to see this introduction. Do not confuse, even if there are other threads, this article represents the real end of our route. If you include the following, all the rest you'll learn without difficulty and it will update your knowledge base package. Here, we define the article on manual unpacking the culmination of knowledge. To write this introd... Read more

I have just replaced my old desktop for a new one that comes with windows 7 64 bit. But not sure why ever since I started using the new desktop to unpack rars and especially rars with parts, both winrar and 7zip often have error messages like:

"Packed data CRC failed"
"The volume is corrupted"
"The file is corrupted"

For example, one of my family member who lives in Ireland wants to send me a bunch of videos and photos taken from a trip they went. He packed these bunch of files into three part rars and uploaded onto a file hosting website and so I have to download each one of them. I first tried jdownloader and downloaded them but couldn't unzip it. Then I tried to download in the normal way using firefox but still couldn't unpack. And I started to think is the pack corrupted?

But then I tried to use my netbook (with win7 32 bit starter os) and downloaded the files through this computer, it unpacked smoothly without a hassle. I then tried to copy the files I have downloaded using my new desktop to my netbook and try to unpack them there but again it saids the file is corrupted. That means somehow it's not winrar or 7zip's problem but the way my new computer writes the files into the hard disk creates corrupted files?

So what's wrong with my new computer? Even my old desktop won't have these problems. Is it because of the 32 64 bit difference? Perhaps my Ireland cousin packed the files with winrar 32 bit and i used 64 bit didn't work? Or ... Read more

You may have other Spyware issues. First you can disable the Firewall. If the Spyware program opens then it has it's own Firewall that conflicts with Windows. You should also download CCleaner delete temp files, run Registry Cleaner too. Then download malwarebytes run full scan delete nasties.

This help request might fit in alternate discussion threads, but this seems like the most logical place to post... these could be 2 separate issues, but it feels like they are connected to me.

A - Unpacking any RAR, Zip, 7z, etc file - particularly large ones results in CRC or other unpacking errors 90% of the time. Sometimes a simple retry works, sometimes re-downloading the compressed file works.. sometimes nothing works. Anything over 1GB is almost sure to fail miserably every time (often fails on different files within the package.
(this occurs using winzip, winrar, 7zip)

B - Multiple game client crashes - Oblivion, Various MMORPG (WoW, LOTRO, many others) crash constantly.. if the computer doesn't freeze or blue screen, the error is 100% the client .exe file .. it doesn't happen just on strenuous load sequences or 'laggy' areas.. it can just happen sitting in the middle of an unpopulated area.. varies once per 1-5 hrs.. rarely goes 3 gameplay attempts without at least 1 crash.

Both errors have occured pretty consistently over the last 3 years.. i give up on some games that have more crashes than others.. and give up on some because i can never even unpack the game to play it.

Hi... I was wondering if anyone else is having same problem as me when trying to install the 32-bit RC. I have created a 50 gigs logical partition on my hard drive to install windows 7 on (i'm using Vista Home Premium on my Dell laptop). on installation screen i select the drive for the new installation and so it goes to the next screen where it shows a list of bunch of stuff that it's supposed to do. The first one is "copying files" or something along those lines which gets checked and so it moves to the second thing that is i believe called unpacking the installation files (or something similar). My installation "freezes" there as it shows 0% for about an hour or two and then it errors and cancels the installation.
any help would be much appreciated.

Hello -

I can really use anyone's help who can shed some light on these two problems. I'm pretty self-sufficient, and I've spent lots of time online trying to firgure out the rememdies to these problems but so far to no avail.

Here are my issues:

1) I am operating on Windows XP. For the last month or so, whenever I try to email a document or photo by highlighting the file and clicking on "Email Selected Files," nothing is happening. Normally, it would go to my default email (Earthlink Total Access) and allow me to add a message and hit "send." But, as I say, whenever I highlight files to email now, all I hear is one beep and nothing happens beyond that.

2) This problem began yesterday. I have Wordperfect 11 and a Canon i80 printer. I can print from all sources EXCEPT Wordperfect 11. When I try to pring a WP document, I'm getting the error message, "printserver110.exe." I've tried all the solutions I've seen online, and NONE have worked. I can't even uninstall WP so I can try re-installing it. It aborts in the middle of the uninstall procedure and says that it can't finish the uninstall.

A:i have some problems with .exe files

When you double click an .exe does it ask you what program to use to open it? If so, you may want to search out the Tutorial how to reset default file associations.

If it's not doing that and "Norton" seems the common denominator in the errors, I'd temporarily disable Norton and all other AV programs. Also if you are running more than one AV program at the same time, it causes problems. Manual scans are OK. I mean running 2 real-time protection AV programs simultaneously will cause them to clash.

This is my first post in the forum and I joined because I dont know how to solve the problem after reading tutorials and trying a few things.
I have VIsta Business 32 bit DELL Optiplex computer. I am not a newbie at computers but I am not a tech genius or anything like that. I am usually able to solve problems by going online an trying things. This time I think it might be a registry problem and I am too scared to go in there.

I recently purchased some software - english songs, mp3s and some pdfs for my english classes. I received them in zip file format.

THey downloaded from IE no problem and I saved them in the file in my documents where I wanted them.
Vista automatically unzips the files for me. I double clicked on the folder in the zip file and then it opened onto the documents in the folder. I then tried to open each pdf or mp3 file but nothing happens. I then deleted everything and went through a tutorial from this website on how to sort out zip file issues, downloaded zipfix_vista merged it and then tried again but the same problem is occuring.

I get the same problem happening with any attachment that comes to me in my windows live mail account but overcame that problem just by forwarding the messages on to my own gmail account and opening them there.

Can anyone give me advice on how to fix the issue? I am based in Japan so please understand time differences and me not getting back to questions asked promptly.

First of all, sorry if this question is under the wrong topic...I didn't know where to put it.

Recently I've been having trouble opening several programs, from Solitaire and Minesweeper to Windows Movie Maker and, most recently, iTunes. In spite of my very limited computer knowledge, I think the problem is with the .exe files, since when I try to open programs I get messages like this (from attempt to open iTunes):
"C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe
Application not found"

or I get a window like this (from attempt to open Windows Movie Maker) that says
"Choose the program you want to use to open this file:
File: MOVIEMK.exe"
and suggests Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word, Notepad, and Steam.

I have the file FixExe.reg on my flash drive from previous run-ins with malware, so I figured I'd run it and see if it helped. But when I tried to open it, it opened a window that said
"Adding information can unintentionally change or delete values and cause components to stop working correctly. If you do not trust the source of this information in F:\FixExe.reg, do not add it to the registry.
Are you sure you want to continue?"
When I click Yes, I get another window that says
"The keys and values contained in F:\FixExe.reg have been successfully added to the registry."
I click Ok, but then nothing else happens.

Why is it not working?
More importantly, is this even the correct way to fix this problem... Read more

I also have an IEXPLORE in my task manager that loads up on startup that i dont believe is supposed to be there, i usually just end task on it and it goes away.

Hello everybody,

I am currently having a problem with my laptop. My disc drive will not read any .txt or .doc files of any kind. However, any other type of files can be read without any issues. Could this be a hardware failure or is it another issue? Any help or suggestions given are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Ok well when I first noticed my computer bugging out, I used Symantec and Spybot to resolve some of my issues, but apparently, they don't work as well as they should. When I first start my computer I get an error notice about loading zerajifu.dll. The other problem is that my computer keeps telling me that IE can't keep running and needs to close, like every five seconds, even though, I'm not running IE. And now, I'm getting all kinds of popups for Antivirus 2009.

Please Help and thanks in advance.

When I try to run some programs like GIMP or a game, I get an error saying "the program can't start because iconv.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." I tried downloading the necessary .dll, and putting it in GIMP's folder. But then, I got a different error. “The procedure entry point libiconv_set_relocation_prefix could not be located in the dynamic link library iconv.dll.”

What am I doing wrong?

Hey all, thanks for reading this. I downloaded a zipped, (and I'm pretty sure encrypted) folder containing 8 songs from a record company's website. When I try to extract the folder I receive the message - The file you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name. - I've tried changing the destination folder's name, and tried extracting the file to other places on the hard drive with no luck. I feel like I'm missing a no brainer solution. Any ideas?

I am having just the most frustrating time trying to do anything on my computer with windows 8. Every time I turn around, it is telling me I don't have permission to do this or that thing. Can someone please tell me how to fix this problem? I am at home and this is my own personal computer. No one else uses it. I feel like I am not being given permission to use my own computer that I paid for.

On another forum, I was reading what someone said to someone else who was having this same problem and they advised them to go to their Users folder and right click then click on properties and the Security tab and to change the settings there but it wont allow me to.

I cannot even rename many of my own pictures that I have in a folder. Its ridiculous!

Also, how do I log on as the Administrator? I actually thought that I was doing that anyway, but it just now dawned on me that maybe am not. When I had Windows XP on my old computer it had a thing you clicked to log on as the Administrator, but I don't see that feature anywhere on Windows 8??? and how can I set it where I am always logged on as the Administrator? I looked, as I said before, on the Users/Security thing and all the things are checked as the Administrator but then there's the other one and it has my name on it and the top two are unchecked. So I just realized maybe I need to reset this entire thing? How can I do that so that I always have access to my own stuff on my computer?

Hi there Claudia. So far we know the computer isn't letting you do things, but what things isn't it letting you do? Can you be specific about the individual issues you have had? It could draw more attention to your issue.

I am unable to delete the previous versions as they are required for old files. My problem is that once the current file is upgraded, when I go to create a shortcut to the file, it always wants to open with the previous version. If I select browse in Open With, it still will not let me select the latest version to open with. Any ideas.

several processes are hanging
hidden files can't be shown (clicking the "Show hidden files and folders" button is immediately reversed)
system restore is only available in safe mode
System Properties reads "manufactured and supported by JunJun Notebook" instead of "Dell Computers" (this seems odd)

A:Trojans? Problems with jun.exe files

I've done some searching and figured out a few things about these bugs.

From what I can tell, the malware is Chinese-specific - everything out there about a jun.exe bug is in Chinese - and I got it about a month ago. Unfortunately my Chinese isn't good enough (nor is Google's translator - e.g. " I found the answer landlord try question.") to figure it out. It looks like they recommend something called USBCleaner.

I haven't tried that but I have been tracking down a few things. I've stopped the jun.exe process and removed a autorun.inf file that reads:

That fixed the slow sleep/recover time, but there's still the problem that the "Show hidden files" button can't be checked (you check it, it immediately reverts and you never see the hidden files).

Any help in getting rid of this completely would be greatly appreciated.

When I opened one of the folders on my USB drive there were new folders and files that had been created.

The file and folder names were weird symbols:

The file and folder types were also weird symbols:
??? File
~?? File

The file sizes were roughly 2.5GB

McAfee scan did not find any viruses

The folder creation dates were 2067, 2030, etc. The files did not have creation dates

The files were both hidden, visible and operating system file types. The folders were both hidden and visible files types.

The file and folders cannot be accessed, I get the error message that they are not accessible due to incorrect syntax. When trying to rename/delete I get the error "cannot read from source file or disk"

My USB stick has always been safetly removed and there have been no other problems with it. There should not have been any files being written to that folder on my USB stick. No other folders have been affected.

Any advice on how to remove these files and folders? How would I have got them? Are my USB stick & PCs safe?

I'm using the Veritas WinInstall program that came on the Win2K CD to create MSI files, but I'm not having any luck.

I've created a "clean" PC by installing XP on a freshly formatted HD, and installed all updates.
Then I run the Discoz.exe to create the before snapshot, then install the program I want.
I reboot and run the Discoz.exe to create the after snapshot. Then I pull up the MSI file in the console to clean up any extra registry entries, etc, and I find that there are no files listed.

I have tried other programs as well, and also installing the program without rebooting. Each time on a clean PC.

Any ideas???

I had a faulty hard drive on my laptop that was just changed. Then I used the old hard drive as a secondary drive to retreive some important files, mostly jpg files.

It worked fine and as soon as I got home and looked at those revocered files and they all worked. Today (after 8 hours) I tried to look at those pictures and XP wouldn't show any previews and when I tried to open the files with Adobe Photoshop, it gave me this error:

Could not open "D:\IMG.JPG" because the file is locked. Use the "Properties" command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file.

I tried to copy and cut those files and move them to another folder and I got thise error message:

Cannot copy IMG: Access is denied.
Make sure the disk in not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

Also I had a recovered folder that I was first able to access, but now when Itry to access that folder, it gives me this error:

D:\Folder is not accessible.
Access is denied.
Any solutions please?

I recently got a new pc with an 80gig HD and it runs WinXP. I would like to take my movie and music files from my old 30gig HD (on a pc that runs Win 98), but I keep hitting brick wall after brick wall.

As of now, I've connected the old HD. They are correctly set to primary master and slave on BIOS. My device manager detects the other HD, but I can't access it. It doesn't even have a partition name (is that a correct term?) like E drive.

When I right click on the drive, all options that I want are greyed out. The only thing available is "Delete Partition."

I need to know if what I'm trying to do is even possible, and if so, what am I doing wrong, or not doing. Any help at all is very appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm having a lot of problems with my IE 6. I'm running a new computer:
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
2.00 GHz
224 MB RAM
WXP Home
High Speed Cable internet

I go on the internet and I start freezing all over the place. Originally, I thought that it was due to the pop up windows getting in my way and a silly program(s) from i look up that just installed itself. Well, I got rid of all of that and I'm still freezing.
I empty my temp files and cookies on a regular basis but still that doesn't help.
It happens randomly at any time, but the most common occurances are when I'm clicking on a link in a message board or web page. I also have problems when clicking on a link embedded into an email in my OE. I've emailed Microsoft but I'm still waiting for a reply.

QUESTION 2: I like to view my temp files, cookies and history just to check up on what my kids have been up to (I refuse to use the "Net Nanny" things as they sometimes block out perfectly good sites for no own personal site which is TOTALLY safe!!). With W95, I could easily see what was stored in my temp files but with XP, all that shows is an "index.dat" file and it won't let me enter it. Also, I've gone and deleted files in tools = internet options..etc but then find out that some things haven't been deleted (when by accident I can actually see what's there). What can I do about this?

I would really appreciate your help.
Thank you.

A:IE6 problems & temp files

CacheSentry and CacheMonitor are useful for deleting "stray" files, keeping index.dat honest, and monitoring the contents of the cache:

Spider ( ) will help with management of the index.dat files. But be very selective which you delete. Most are rebuilt by Windows, but deleting the index.dat in C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\OfflineCache\, for example, is permanent and causes the loss of the ability to run System Information without a tweak.

Other useful tools (free):

Internet Cache Explorer

STG Cache Audit

A:problems tranfering files

A regular cable is OK if either of the ports is auto-sensing--and almost all new ones are. If you can ping or "see" in either direction you will not need a cross-over.

You need to enable file and printer sharing on each (see below). Remember that 3rd party firewalls need to be uninstalled or properly configured for LAN access. Sometimes 'disable' or 'turn off' will work.

Here's lots of info on XP and Vista file sharing:

A little while ago i opened up one of my wordpad documents that was 7 pages long and to my great surprise all the data i had previously saved in this document was not displayed! I swear i did not delete the 7 pages of data myself. Subsquently i opened up some of my other wordpad documents and found the data i had saved in these docs was no longer showing too!
Interestingly all of the affected docs were saved and open at times when my laptop battery went. Perhaps these docs were corrupted when the laptop battery ran out.  I dont have any docs that do not display all previously saved data that were not open at times when the laptop battery ran out!
The affected wordpad files were saved as RTF. I saved the files in calibri font but when i open them now the font is shown as courier new for some reason. All of the affected wordpad files do not display any of the previously saved data. I have opened the affected files and changed the fonts but still the data wont display. However when i go to this pc/documents and enter the name of one of the affected docs in the 'search documents' box the search result shows the first few lines of text in the file so i guess the data is there i just have to find a way of accessing it!
When i open the affected wordpad files with MS Word(unlicensed version) pages of squares come up.
When i open them with open office pages of #'s come up.
Can anyone help?

A:Problems with Wordpad files.

Sorry for the delay. Only just saw your request.
Open your files with a free editor on a Linux live disk. Cut and paste to text file, save to usb, then import to your normal application. (try more than one)
If they won't open with Linux text editors, they are likely corrupted and irretrievable.
edit: though I do have a couple of ideas... which you probably won't need.

I commited the HORRIBLE mistake of opening a .lnk file with notepad. This set all the link files to open with notepad as default, and it stayed that way (which means I wasn't able to open any links). Even worse, an inexperienced friend told me to set the default to Explorer (windows explorer). Later he himself tried to change it to open with what I believe was cmd.exe and the .lnk files don't even show up in the control panel now when you try to change the defaults in the program menu. I am currently using a 64bit Windows7 Home Premium. If there is any way to fix this, I would appreciate it if any of you could help. If not, I would have to move all my programs to another hard drive and restore Windows to factory default, but I'd have to reinstall every program, so I'm trying to avoid doing so.
Thank you!

i m unable to open files in my PC with extenesion DBX & zip.
please suggest appropriate measures

A:problems opening files with xtn DBX & zip

The way you open zip files depends on your operating system.
If you have xp - you can open them just by clicking on the icon.

If you don't - you can download Winzip
you can open zip file with this iprogram.

DBX files are outlook express folders. Ex. imbox - deleted items.
You must have outlook express in order to view the contents of these files.
Depending on your operating system there are different ways to install outlook express. The usual way is the add/remove programs applet in the control panel.

Add windows components
Outlook express should be on the list.

I have been having a very weird problem lately. When attempting to rename a file (the screenshot is of a .exe on the start menu, but I am having this problem with Libraries), windows states that there is another file with the same name in the same location; however, I am not able to see any files with the same name.

I have tried re-creating the start menu error, and I have no clue how to do so. When attempting to re-create the error in the libraries, it won't let me rename a default library to the same name as a named library that was dragged to the recycle bin, however, it does not give me the error that there is another file with the same name, and when attempting to rename a new library that I created, it would rename it without any problems. In addition, I can rename the default library to whatever I want, but not the name of another library that was previously created, and then deleted.

So, somehow, there are these "ghost files" that I cannot see, but prevent me from renaming other files. If anyone has any idea to what might be causing this problem, I would greatly appreciate help.

Thanks in advance,
The Me

Attached are some pictures that show the lack of another .exe and windows preventing me from naming it.

A:Problems with Naming Files

Hi and welcome to the Forum
I'm somewhat confused here! You say you are trying to rename an exe file but your screenshot shows you trying to rename a shortcut. The easy way to do this is go to your Desktop, locate the shortcut, right click on it and choose rename. Then delete the entry in the start menu. Then go to the desktop, locate the newly named shortcut, right click it and choose "Pin to Start menu"
Now lets look at the Libraries. Please state sinply what you want to do here ie what is showing now when you open "Libraries" and what you want it to show. A screenshot of what is there now will help!

Hello all,

A few days ago my removeable [USB] media drive burped for some reason while playing music in iTunes.

Evidently when it did it hosed the file sctructure in my iTunes music folder on that drive. Now I am trying to delete those files and Vista is not letting me. When I try I get the following error message:

"The file you specified is not valid or is too long. Specify a different file name".

Looking at the file structure it looks like giberish, with all kinds of characters that are not of the English language.

I've tried deleting them in safe mode and had no luck there. I even ran Scandisk and that didn't help.

Next I tried uninstalling iTunes (no luck), CCleaner, and Glary's Utilities.

Any other options?

You can Set Foxit Reader as default PDF reader in 3 ways.

1.If you have opened Foxit reader for the first time you will be asked whether to set Foxit reader as default reader click Yes to make Foxit reader as Default PDF reader.
2.Open Foxit Reader, from Help menu enable or select Set to Default PDF Reader.

I should include a better description of the problem
When deleting a file i get "you will need to provide administrator permission to delete this folder"

I click the little coloured shield continue button and get "you need permission to perform this action" then underneath "you require permission from (a load of numbers) to make changes to this folder

Hello sieski,

Welcome to 7 Forums.

Since these folders where created in another OS, they have permissions from that OS. Try this. Take Ownership Shortcut

Hope it helps.

I have installed the K-Lite Codec Pack. Now WMP can see MKV files. They are listed in Libraries -> Videos -> whatever.

If I look at the AVI and the MKV files Security settings, they all have WMPNetworkSvc set to Read allowed.

But I still don't see them with my BluRay player over the network. (I do see the folders, but they are empty.) The BluRay player does support MKV with MPEG2 and AVC content, which is what my files are.

It plays the MKV files just fine from the USB port. And according to the manual, there is no difference between USB and dlna file compatibilty, except USB plays asf, wmv and m4v files.

I also have a problem giving access to WMPNetworkSvc to some folders. (I guess it is supposed to happen automatically when I add a parent folder to the shared library.

A:Still having problems sharing MKV files

I don't know the ins and outs of serving up MKV files. But I did use MakeMKV for some time(I had a USB set top box) and one of the features I did not get to try was serving MKV over home network. If you go to the forum you can find out more. I believe MakeMKV is still downloadable as beta meaning it is free. You do have to download a new key with each beta version update though.

MakeMKV - Make MKV from Blu-ray and DVD

Also you may gain some insight about networking MKV from reading the forum.
There is a server standard it supports but I don't recall the name since I did not have a "live" player with network port.

They should be in the folder you saved them to. Aren't they there? Some programs store things in folders in Program Data which you'll need to have View Hidden Files on to see.

I've been working with some csv's lately that deal with the game Madden and 4 times over the last several days while having a csv open I've had the following problem. These blue lines appear out of nowhere across my monitor and then whenever I move the mouse or click a button the screen goes black and the "no signal" message pops up. The power button light on my monitor goes from green to orange and then just sits there. Turning the monitor on and off doesn't fix it. The only thing that does is if I restart my computer and without touching anything the monitor comes back on. I've never had this problem before this week and I've had this monitor for several years. Also, it's done it minutes after rebooting my computer so I don't believe overheating is the problem. In fact, as long as I don't open a csv my computer runs without a problem. I've left my computer alone for over an hour just sitting at the desktop and it runs fine. I have the newest nvidia drivers and all of microsoft's updates. I've attached my own drawing of what my monitor looks like before it goes black. I even downloaded a new program for the csv's thinking that Excel might be causing it but the same thing happened when using a csv in the CSVED program I downloaded. Do you guys have any idea as to what is causing this to happen and what I need to do to get it to stop?

I have a client who is having issues importing VCS calendar files from a web application into outlook.

Normally it should download the VCS file from the web browser, then you can open it up, it will open with Outlook and open up the extra calendar properties (you can set the time, date, etc).

Originally the .vcs file had no association so I set the default application to Outlook.

Now when I double click the file it opens in outlook, but sets the file up as an attachment in a blank email.

When I click Import export wizard it can import the vcs file, but it doesn't open the extra calendar properties (so for example if the appointment is set for the day it will take the whole day instead of asking the user to specify a time first)

The only way I can get it to import correctly is if I select the calendar option in outlook, then click and drag the file into the calendar. From there it opens the file properly with the calendar wizard.

I am certain this has to do with file associations or outlook not handling the VCS file correctly.

Any ideas?

I recently had a problem with my computer so I boot up my recovery cd. Soon everything was working fine and I installed some programs that I used to have. However, a few days ago, everything went weird again. (But in a different way before I used the recovery cd.)

All the installers didn't work. They all had errors halfway through. They created empty folders in the program files and they can't be removed. Most things in the program files now can't be removed. I also can't install some other programs and the error messages were something like I didn't have access. But I was on the administrator account. I'm sure the installers weren't corrupted because one of them was the iTunes installer.. When even that couldn't be installed, I decided to ask for help.

My OS is Windows XP Tablet Edition. Other than that everything else is fine.
Help is appreciated.

Hi everyone,
I'm not sure if it's the right place to post this but I would really appreciate some help.
I'm having some trouble with my hard drive. It all started when a friend wanted me to format his external hard drive, so I copied all of his data on to one of my drives and formatted his disk using a utility that came with it (he wanted it as FAT32). Anyway, I did it kind of in a hurry and it seems that I also copied the "System Volume Information" and "Recycled" folder on his disk into a folder on my disk by accident. So now every time I want to enter the folder where I put this stuff, windows says that "the disk is not formatted" and asks me if I want to format it now. Also, and more importantly, the stuff in some of my other folders has "disappeared" and is not showing up in the windows explorer. The drive is being very slow when I try to access some folders but not with others and when the computer is idle it makes a continuous "" sound, quite slowly. When I try to copy files from certain folders, I also get an error message saying "cyclic redundancy check" (I'm not sure if that is the exact translation - my version of winows is in French). Now I'm not sure exactly what the problem is here because prior to copying this data, my disk was fine. I have suspicion that my inadvertently copying the "system volume information" into a folder ... Read more

Hello! Firstly Thank You for this great community for Vista troubleshooting

A lot of the time when I download a file from the internet it won't run or install afterwards. There are a couple of different problems I've come across:

Windows Update: Some of the updates have successfully installed. Some fail to install every time.. I have 3 updates sat waiting to be installed but they fail when I try.

NForce Motherboard Driver: I downloaded the file from official website. Run the install program and half way through it errors: "The contents of this file cannot be unpacked. The executable you are attempting to run has been corrupted..."

I tried to download this file approx. 5 times. It makes sense that this error is because or a bad file, but I successfully installed the drivers by: Download the same file, from an XP machine, copy it over and install. I have this error alot, on different files not just the driver installer.

ITunes: Downloaded the Vista x64 version of this from When I run the installer (and as Administrator) I get prompted for the Admin Rights bit, click Allow and the application disappears and nothing else happens.

YouTube: As something I think's worth pointing out, if I stream a video on YouTube there's a good chance internet explorer will crash half way through the video.

Hello all,

As of last night I've been having problems opening .exe files. For example, trying to open Opera Internet Browser leads to a window asking which program I want to use to open the file. This seems to be the case for most .exe files, though some I cannot open at all, such as Microsoft Word (I figured out that if I open an existing Word document on my harddrive the program will open, but I get the error message "application not found" when trying to open it from the Start menu). Trying to open mbam gives me message " not a valid Win32 application."

Here's what I've done so far: last night, when the problem first arose, I ran a full scan with Symantec Antivirus, which did not find anything. After browsing these forums earlier today, I found a thread in which someone posted what seemed to be my same problem. One of the moderators (or experts, or whoever) advised this person to save this to their desktop and run it to fix the registry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

I did this and it seemed to fix my problems. I could open .exe files and was not being prompted to select a program to open them with. However, a few hours later now, I'm having the same problems I did earlier today and last night. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am running XP pro with an NTFS second hard disk and am unable to delete a certain file from my hard drive. Whenever I try to delete the file I recieve an error message saying that the file is in use by another user or program, even when there are no other programs running and there is only my user account activated.

I have tried deleting the file through safe mode (which made no difference) and through the command prompt (which didn't work because the file name contained a space and so couldn't find the file).

If anybody has any suggestions of ways to solve this problem or has encountered the same thing their help would be greatly appreciated as the file is taking up a large amount of my hard disk.

I don't even know where to post this cry for help. It has to do with one of our Avid Xpress Pro systems running on a Dell PC with 4 Promax firewire external drives, but it's really about data loss and retrieval.

Here are the three problems that may or may not be related:

1. Our trusty system began giving us overwrite errors, occasional freezes, and a series of other annoying and time consuming errors. A Norton analysis of the system shows nothing out of the ordinary.

2. One of the 200GB Promax 1394 drives began to fail and make a grinding noise. This one we sent out and it turned out to be a bad drum and the data is currently being retrieved and transferred to another 200GB drive.

3. Now the real mystery - one of our three remaining 1394 drives "suddenly" vanished. It shows up in Windows XP Pro's Disk Manager as "unknown" and "unformatted." I suspect a corrupted file allocation table. I bought a data retrieval utility - "Stellar Phoenix - FAT & NTFS". The utility shows all or most of the files in the OMFI directory (Avid's default media storage directory). We've been painstakingly retrieving the files from that drive to the other two drives but still the files we need (which show up in Avid as having been digitized in that drive ("I")) are nowhere to be found. Does the XP automatically change a drive letter when a drive is removed? I ask this because it could have been that the "I" dr... Read more

i have a problem renaming files with long filenames. in fact, it won't even let me delete or copy or cut them.
i think this may be the problem: windows doesn't have a problem with letting me write long filenames. it does have a problem if i try to move these files into another directory (an error message comes up saying that the file name is too long to move). but i think the problem is that it DOES let me rename the folder that the long filename is in, rendering the file inside useless to me. (i don't actually know if this is the problem, i'm too scared to test my theory).

but anyway, i was wondering if there was any way of renaming my file. i've tried downloading a renaming program but that didn't work. is there something i can type into the 'run' thing?

A:problems renaming files

You can try doing it from a command prompt. If the file names are very long (>255), then you masy have better luck using the "command" console rather than the "cmd" one. Rename the files first with old 8.3 DOS names and then rename them from within Windows.

Start by going to Start > Run, and typing:
cmd <Enter>

Navigate to the folder where the files are and use the "ren" command to rename them.

If that doesn't work, try using "command" instead of "cmd" in the Run box.
