Hello

I have a dell inspiron 6400 running vista basic that keeps booting into startup repair and wont system restore or system recover.
The system restore says that there is not enough memory to preform a restore.
Safe mode only boots the first seven drivers and then stalls and the system returns to booting startup repair.
Is there is anything else you that I could try or and more information you need please ask.

No matter what option i pick in the safe mode list, the computer will not start. when i choose any of the safe modes, (safe mode, safe mode with networking etc) the computer displays a list of random commands (i dont understand any of it) and then restarts. If I try to Start Windows Normally, or use last settings that worked, it seems to start loading, and then restarts.

Any ideas?

When I try to turn the computer on it lights up for a few seconds then turns off , the only light that says on is the battery light ( when ac is plugged in other wise nothing is on . I was having a similar problem when the ram was loose that was fixed yesterday ( instead of the battery light being on it was flashing every 10 sec or so ) . Do you think its still the ram? Ive taken it out and put it back in a few times because I though that was the issue but that didn't fix the problem .

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop which is only about two years old. When buying it, i pretty much selected all of the top of the line parts dell offered while in the customizing step. A few days ago the screen went black and it crashed. From that point on I couldn't get it to turn back on. everytime i press the power button, the green light in the button flashes for a second and then it just dies. nothing comes up on the screen, its as if the power just gets cut a second after the power button is pressed. im guessing this is a hardware problem, but i dont know because ive kept very good care of it, barely ever moving it. can someone please help?

Try disconnecting from power and taking the battery out for 5 mins and see if that helps.

Hello,

Today I noticed that I could not open my start menu with neither the windows button, ctrl + esc, or a click of the mouse. I've also had a problem the last couple of days saving/opening files in one of the programs I used to make music. I tried to go into safe mode to do system restore, but the safe mode didn't boot. It scrolled all the system files on the screen but then just stopped and nothing happened.

So, I tried the other option (forget what it's called) that lets you perform various other system restoration tasks. I brought up the system restore screen from there, but got an error that said something about corrupt files so it could not perform the restore. I checked again, and all my restore points had been deleted.

Lastly, when I click computer, all the drives are blank with no names beside them, only the icons. I can still click them and they seem to be functioning normally, so I don't know if there is a relation to this. I don't know if some registry files were deleted or if there is some other problem. I didn't notice the start menu/safe mode/blank icon issues until I just recently installed the latest windows update.

Sorry if this seemed a little long winded, but I would appreciate help from anyone.

Thanks,
adub2b23

Last night I updated windows 8.1 from windows 8.
It got to the stage where it needs to restart so it done that started the configarations and once it reached 100% it restarted.

Since then what happens is when i press power on the samsung logo comes on the screen then the black screen with the windows picture then the bsod comes up for around half a second and it restarts. then it constantly does this.

The whole cycle only takes a few seconds.

Ive tried booting in safe mode but this isnt working so I downloaded kav rescue on another computer and saved it on a flash drive, But it wont boot off this either.

Any ideas?

A:Windows wont start after 8.1 update wont boot in safe mode

What does the BSOD state? Most times it is a driver issue with the Display drivers. Other times it is hardware.

Hi
My wife's laptop has stopped working. She tells me that when she switched it on there was a screen which said Windows was closing down because there was a threat to the computer, possibly due to a recent update, or something like that. By the time I reached the computer this message had disappeared leaving a whiteish slightly shimmering screen.
I tried switching off and restarting but after about 15-20 seconds the whirring stopped and the computer did nothing else.
I tried to start in safe mode by tapping F8 with same result
I tried to start in safe mode holding F8 down, same result.
During the time the computer is switched on the lights flash amber a few times then green, this is repeated at regular intervals.
I would be grateful if someone can help for she seems to hold me responsible for losing all her photographs (the main purpos of this computer).

Hello,

I was reading another thread that described the same problem that i have, it seems to be closed though.

I have a dell inspiron 1100. It wasn't registering that the AC was connected and then the battery ran dead. Now it wont start at all. When i hit the power button the lights on the front of the lap top blink green and then orange. If i take the battery out the lights on the computer are very faint, the battery light is orange and the power light is green. When i put the battery back in the lights shut off.

Is this a simple replace the battery or ac cord problem? Any advice would be greatly welcome.

Thanks

A:dell inspiron 1100 wont start

Notebooks do not need a battery to run off the mains, so take the battery out, plug the notebook in and if it doesn't power up then you need to check out the power supply and/or other possibilities.

Your post is kind of confusing, not enough detail, but you may try
doing a repair install of xp. You will need to set boot priority to cd rom
in bios, and go from there.

I guess you're tapping the F8 key after you press the power button?
Some PC's will work tapping the F5 key.
Mine works using either one.

Alternative:
To use the System Configuration Utility method

1. Close all open programs.
2. Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK.
3. The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab,
Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK
4. Restart your computer when prompted.
5. The computer restarts in Safe mode.
6. Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
7. When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode,
open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT"
and click OK to restart your computer

I have a strange problem. If I try to start xp in safe mode, I get a message stating "windows did not start successfully. Recent hardware or software change may have caused this". There have been no hardware changes, although I have recently installed Malware bytes' anti-malware and SDfix. You see, I have been getting the "windows must now restart because the DCOM server process launcher service terminated unexpectedly" shut down error. I want to run SDFix to see if it helps with the DCOM error, but I cant run it because I cant boot into safe mode. I can boot normally, using the "start windows normally" or "last good configuration". Is there any other way to get my computer into safe mode?

Stupidly i picked up a virus through a 'windows security' pop up. Avira found a DIAL virus, still problems with IE google search affected and then Modzilla, AVG found nothing, Avira found it again, a microsoft product found nothing then Kaspersky found the nasties a rootkit (?) and another trojan. Instructed to do a system restore restart.
Now the laptop wont start up windows. It scrolls back to black screen safe mode restart. Safe mode doesnt work nor any of the start up options. Theres a flash of a blue instruction screen but that wont show up. Done the F8 key trick etc.
Other problem is the Win XP software was preloaded, no rescue disc.
Did a Sony Vaio F10 computer check which came up clear but am not progressing as worried about losing data if there is a better/another solution..
Any ideas?

I have a Sony Viao VGC-RA840G Windows XP Media Center Eddition. it was working fine all this time 2 yrs, till after a power outage, today. I try to start it, get to a screen where these option are given;
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

But none is working. It restarts but keeps going to this same screen with these options.

i dont have a a-drive to use a boot disk. I dont have the cd cause this was of the shelve purchase. I can use F2 to get to the BIOS screen or F8 for startup options or f10 which will take me through a full systems restore to factory defaults but will erase all personal files, which defeats the whole purpose. I have tons of photos of my 15 month old boy on there which potentially will all be lost. Is there a way that i can restore windows only w/o having to do a complete restore. I spoke to the tech chat support at sony and they say the only solution is to do a full system recovery and i should work with a 3rd party (that they keep pushing - called drivesavers- to have a back up made and do a data recovery excercise) Is this truly the only solution or are there possibly other ways to accomplish this?

Any suggestions would be helpful THANKS in advance

Right now I'm trying to fix a computer that recently became effected with the "Anitvirus XP 2008" virus. Its gotten so bad that we can't get onto the desktop, and when we press "f8" to start safe mode, the option will come up, but when we click "start in safe mode" the computer restarts itself. It's done this every time. I was digging around on the internet and I found something that said that I have to make a bootable cd. Is this right? If not, does anyone know how to get past this? Hello, and thanks in advance I have recieved a lot of help in this forum in the past. Last night my pc started running at 100%cpu and I unchecked a few things about searching from the start menu. They said it would stop casuing the exploerrer.exe to run at 100%. Then last night it kept crashing, but I was able to start it in safe mode. I did the system check today after work but now it asks how I want it started i have chosen all the options. It looks like its about to start then it goes to a gray screen and stops there. I know a lot has been posted about this. Is all hope lost? Of course I have files that I should have backed up ages ago... Thank you and I know you guys are busy.

I recently bought Dell Inspiron 2330 AIO Touch with top specs (i7, 2TB,8GB, Win8). Have used it since one month. While browsing web the desktop turned blue saying an error message and that the computer will restart on its own. When it didn't after some time I switched off the mains and restarted it. Now it powers on but even BIOS does not boot or there is no Dell logo also kind of like failed POST while the fan keeps running continuously which used to just run for a second or two when it used to boot normally. It had happened before a couple of times that while watching youtube videos the same error occured but it never failed to restart normally. Kindly help me to resolve this issue.

A:New Dell Inspiron 2330 AIO Touch wont start.

Hi Puneetrai,
Try releasing the residual charge from the system. Here are the steps:

Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer including the power supply.
Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
Reconnect the power supply. Try to restart the computer and check.

If the issue still persists, perform Built In Self-Test (BIST) on power supply. There is a Green LED and BIST Button above the power cord connector. If the LED glows solid green on pressing the button when the system is plugged in to the wall socket the Power Supply Unit is functioning OK.
The power button LED is a bi-color light that indicates the Dell Inspiron One 2330 power state. Please share which state it is in when you try to boot the system:

Off
Solid White
Solid Amber
Blinking Amber

The system can emit a series of beeps during start-up if the display cannot show errors or problems. These series of beeps, called beep codes identify various problems. Please share if hear any specific patter of beep codes on startup.
Hope this helps. Please share the results. I'll be happy to assist you.

Ok so i just got an old dell inspiron 9300 which had Windows XP sp 2 on it. I wanted to change to Win7 Ultimate 32bit,so i did, everything worked out smoothly until i turned the laptop off and the next morning when i tried to start it up i got an error that read:
Windows Failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click next.
3. Click "repair your computer"
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

Ive tried everything from reinstalling the os to booting from usb, and cd nothing helps i tried the startup repair, but that doesn't seem to help either. I also tried to find a restore point but it doesn't find any.

Please Help!!

Thank you,

Try pressing the F5 key down as soon as you turn on the computer. Hold it down until you hear a beep, a startup menu (a list of the computer?s various startup options) appears on-screen, or Safe Mode loads. You can press the F5 key to access Safe Mode directly in all Windows versions.

hi.
I know a bit about computers but i ain't the best an ain't bragging.
But i know a problem when i have one.
I wanted to get into safe mode in windows but cant.
I press f8 then select my operating system then the drivers start to load windows in safe mode.

The problem i get is it hangs on one driver, so I'm thinking this driver could be missing or is corrupt.
I have run chkdsk an have use the options to fix all errors but windows still wont start in safe mode.

I checked for Virus and Spy-ware but still no joy.
Also if this driver is missing or corrupt i cant replace it because i cant get into safe mode.

I have also tried the sfc /scannow in cmd but keep getting the message please insert windows xp disk in CD drive D:
The disk is in there i put it in ???? ????

Also don't ask me to do a restore as i have no restore points to go back to as i cleaned up the comp a few days ago.

Any suggestions as to whats going on??

Thanks in advanced

Around a week ago as I closed the computer down one evening, there was a MS update running, I allowed the update and the computer shut down.

The next morning my laptop would not start up. It would load to the password login screen and no further. I was able to go into safe mode and run system restore and this would then allow me to use the computer as normal, I was not able to use a recent restore point though. On rebooting I would be faced with the same problem.

I have updated all my security programs in safe mode with networking and run them but so far they have found nothing.

I have used Microsoft Security Essentials
Malwarebytes (the database was corrupted and was downloaded again)
 Adaware
 Superantispyware
WinPatrol has not notified me of any suspicious activity

in addition I have run a couple of online scans (I forget which ones)

I have run start up repair but apparently this has not fixed my problem. I am using online armour as a firewall. I am not convinced that I have any virus and my security is pretty comprehensive but I am at a loss to what to try next and would appreciate some help if possible.

A:Windows 7 wont start up without using safe mode

A:Computer Wont Start.. Only In Safe Mode

Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today. From your log it appears that you are missing one important program: an antivirus. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. Without one you are at a high-risk of reinfection; while I can try to sort your problem out, if you have no protection, the infections will keep resurfacing. Here are some great free antivirus programs:Antivir, Avast!, AVG, Bitdefender FreeInstall one of these, then run a full scan, letting it quarantine/delete anything it finds. Let me know if there is anything that it reports but can not remove.I have also noticed that you do not appear to have a firewall installed. This is an essential piece of software that acts as an extra layer of security, which restricts access to your computer from the outside world. Therefore, please download one of these free firewalls:Zone AlarmKerioIf you would like some more information about firewalls and how to use them effectively, take a look here. Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click runThis.bat to start the script.Type Y to begin the cleanup process. It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.Press any key and it will restart the PC.When the ... can start my pc up and it will get to the system start up blue screen, but it wont load that screen. i left it for like an hour and still nothing.
I tried going in in safe mode and this worked, but i need an internet connection
I thought maybe it has too much stuff on that account, ie hogging memory so i deleted a lot of stuff like 30 gigs of stuff but it still wont load
I need the internet connection at home so i tried going into safe mode with networking (i think that gives a net connection but maybe it emans something else)
i have ran spy bot s&d and deleted everything, also 2 other programmes + ms anti sypware new beta
thinking it was a virus but it cant be.

i tried a lot of the options you get in F8 but only the normal safe mode seems to work. i cant do a system restore as i deleted them yesterday as they were like a few gigs of stuff on it and i cant seem to find my xp cd so i cant reinstall windows, at least for 4 weeks as ican get a copy when i get home.

Any ideas what to do?

even if it just get me an internet connection in safe mode as thats all i need really.

Also its win xp

Hello All,
I am running Windows 7 RTM on a 1.75Ghz, 3Gb RAM box. Windows 7 was working fine for me, but this morning i just restarted because i thought it was acting slow. It had a proper shut down(I use verbose mode..)But then it never restarted. It just showed the HP logo and stopped.. I am even unable to get into the safe mode box(by pressing F8). I have a windows Xp bootable CD right now... and that doesnt boot either (Yes, I have ensured the booting order is correct.) What could be the cause?
Is it a hardware failure - As in harddisk crash? Because the computer just sits idle!! Strangely, I went to BIOS and did a disk diagnostic test which it passed.. But the harddisk LED didnt blink during the test(It should blink right?)... Please help me, i am really stuck here...

A:Windows 7 wont start.. unable to get to safe mode even!

Some kind of bios setting. Check to see the plug and play os is set to yes. If that's not the cause, use "standard optimized default" as the global bios setting and see how it carries on.

Can't hurt to actually update the bios from the motherboard manufacturer's website too.

IT tried to start up goes to the HP screen then to the XP screen and starts over again. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you try using your Windows Repair disk? If you don't have any repair disk, use your Windows Installation disk and start by repairing your existing windows installation.

By the way, you can create a repair disk as follow :

i just bought a computer and used it for two days, i didnt even realize that the virus software was out of date. Befor i knew it the computer was going crazy. I installed norton antivirus 2005 and it couldnt even remove everything. then one day it shut down by itself and when i restarted the computer and got to the windows xp logo screen and progress scroll, it just freezes after the blue dots have passed by twice. I attempted to reinstall xp and everything went fine until the system had to reboot, once again the system froze at the xp logo screen. i have tryed everything from booting up in safe mode to restarting from the last know working config. and nothing works. Please help

A:Xp freezes at start up and wont even open in safe mode

When you reinstalled xp, did you do a clean install? Or just reinstalled over it? I suggest formatting and doing a clean install. If it still doesn't work, it could possibly mean that the hard drive is going bad. Find out your hard drive brand, download their diagnostic tool and do a scan. Good luck.

This started out as somthing i thought i could handel. Not long after startup the system shuts down and says it was initiated by NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM. "Windows must now be restarted because the DCOM Server Process Launcher service terminated unexpectedly." I thought i would be able to get rid of this by installing adaware and removing it that way. (I have no antivirus installed on the computer, i know im stupid, im sorry, please dont turn this into a 'your an idiot' thread ) so i downloaded adaware on another computer, burned it to a disk, (because the internet didnt work anymore on the infected computer) and figured i could install it. Well that didnt work. It would not let me install, i got about half way and it gave me an error. I attempted to start it in safe mode, and it just froze. a couple tries of that left me in a worse spot than i was. I did also try restoring it to a previous point, but it wouldnt let me click the next button....that weirded me out. Now the computer wont start, it keeps giving me a blue screen. then restarts itself. I hope i gave enough information and i hope someone can help me. Thank you for any help!

I noticed a problem with my mcafee real time scanning and firewalls earlier today (kept turning off) and thought I might have a virus. My intentions as to download superantispyware, update it, then restart in safe mode to scan my computer to check for viruses. I got as far as the restart and now my computer won't restart in normal mode or safe mode. In both cases it stalls on the startup screen. I tried windows startup repair, but that stalls also. Any suggestions or options?

A:Dell desktop won't start in normal or safe mode

Welcome to the forums!

Do you have a windows 7 disk? If so, start and keep tapping F12 to boot from DVD. Choose recovery options, then command prompt. Type C and hit enter. Type dir then hit enter. Make sure you're in the right drive (it'll show windows, users, program folders etc.) Then type chkdsk/r and enter it. That will run check disc and depending on your drive size, take approximately and hour more or less. When thats finished type bootrec.exe/fixmbr and enter it. When its done reboot and try safe mode again.

If you don't have the dvd you can try hitting F8 and pick repair your computer and do the steps above. if you dont have that you can get a copy by following the links in this tutorial and use your coa sticker for the activation. (just click on this link and scroll down to the link for the download) : Clean Install Windows 7

Hope this helps!

I have a windows 7 notebook that won't load into windows or load safe mode successfully its ends with a black screen and hangs forever. System restore wont even fix it. What command can I use to troubleshoot this other than reinstalling windows. Thanks

A:windows 7 wont start up or load safe mode successfully

If you have an install disk and can access Setup (possibly tapping F2 as you switch on) to change the Boot order to CD/DVD before the HDD, then insert the disk - Save and Exit, it will then reboot up with it and you will be prompted to press any key to boot from CD/DVD.

Select the Repair option and then Startup Repair in the Recovery Environment.

It will give you the option to select a restore point which you can opt for or pass on that and let it complete the Startup Repair.

If it reports that it was unable to repair, then you could give the restore point a try.

I then started Startup Repair and it performed the checks, but my computer still wouldn't start. I then tried System Restore which didn't have a backup. I clicked the link to create a backup, but it said 'Your computer is running in a limited diagnostic state'. I have tried running the Windows Vista disk and it doesn't change anything. I had a similar problem once. What I ended up doing was finding the program in the task manager, and ending the task (which promptly restarted). By doing this I knew what to look for on the hard drive. Then I went to that files directory on the hard drive and tried to delete it. I couldn't of course because it was running. See where I'm going with this? I then ended the task and deleted the file before it was able to restart, and not on the first try mind you. Hope this helps.

Like the title says, my computer is stuck on a black screen. I downloaded an update and was instructed to restart the computer. After restarting the computer it went to a black screen. It won't do anything past that. I've tried starting it in safe mode but always with the same result. I have no idea what to do with this short of taking it to Best Buy to have the geek squad take a look at it and frankly I don't feel like doing that. Have you tried selecting Last Known Good Configuration from the Safe Mode menu? It sometimes works. Also, if you put in your W7 DVD and select Repair rather than Install after making the language choice, StartUp repair might help and if it does not, try System Restore.

Hi all,

Well as I stated in the topic, my Dell will not start up, I'll give a little background.

The computer was bought as my main PC and a short while (7 to 10 months) later I bought a laptop and hooked up a network using the Dell as my base station but used the laptop 99.99% of the time. One day I went to start up the Dell and it blue screened me and then after that I formatted the drive and re-installed Windows XP home. It backed it up and started up once but now when it starts up it gives me an (error) saying I think something about the PXE and a cable not plugged in.

But here is where it goes bad......now I can't get passed that even to re-install windows or format my drive and evertime I go into set up and set how it's supposed to start it does nothing still. I've tried everything from removing the CMOS jumpers and then putting them back etc....... I got it to back up one time (not sure how I got to that screen) but I got to a screen where I could go into safe mode. Now it doesn't even recognize my hard drive and when it first starts and says "IDE configuration" it doesn't seem to set it, it just goes to that error again and gives me 2 options to choose from, either F-1 or F-2 to set up, F-1 brings me to this same screen and F-2 brings me to the set up screen?!?

I cannot hit the F-8 or 10 key when starting windows as it gives me a keyboard error and shuts my keyboard down so I have no idea what to do?!?&#... Read more

A:Can't Get My Dell 8200 Dimension To Start?

What I believe the problem may be it the computer is attempting to boot from a network server. In you BIOS (F2 at boot) you will have PXE in the boot order. You need to remove it from the boot menu. PXE in a feature embedded on a chip on the NIC. It allows your computer to boot from a remote computer/workstation/server. This feature real has not application outside of a corporate setting. If you press Exc at boot you may see the PXE process shortly after the computer is turned on.PXE wiki

I am writing from my own laptop, but the problem I am having is with another laptop. It is a Sony Vaio running Windows Vista.I am getting an error message when trying to turn it on--Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:1. Insert you Windows installation disc and restart your computer.2. Choose language settings, click next3. Click "repair your computer"If you do not have the disc (of course, I don't!) contact your system admin or computer manufacturer for assistance.File: \Windows\system32\config\systemStatus: 0xc000014cInfo: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing or corrupt.

A:Windows VISTA: Failed to start...won't start in safe mode, or any other mode!

Typically the system32 Files I would simply replace and expect to get back in to Windows, but with The Registry file being purported as Damaged or missing I would recommend re-installing windows. You can get restore CD's from your manufacturer.

If you tap the F8 key on boot and get options to boot into other modes, I would pick Last known good configuration as you might fix the problem this way.
Not likely, but it's worth a shot.

All my MS Office 2013 programs crashed tonight and I'm trying to figure out what happened. I'm following the instructions here:

https://support.office.com/en-ie/art...8-2d9b8301a2fa

This is the section I'm trying to follow:

Starting the application in Safe Mode is a great way to find out if the problem is caused by and add-in. To do this, go to your Start screen in Windows 8 or click Start > Run in Windows 7, and type one of the following commands:

Type excel /safe and press Enter to start Excel 2013. Type outlook /safe and press Enter to start Outlook 2013.
Type winword /safe and press Enter to start Word 2013.
I'm at the start screen and the only place to type anything is in the search box. Is this correct? Because when I type outlook/safe here, it just brings up articles about opening Outlook in safe mode. Isn't it supposed to launch Outlook? What am I doing wrong?

This may be the wrong place to say this, but I HATE windows 8. Sorry.

A:How to start programs in safe mode from the start screen?

Well that worked for me, make sure you get the spacing's on the forward slash correct. The top sections was Program start excel safe mode. I clicked it and excel opened in safe mode? I don't think this has anything to do with windows 8.1 seem the method was the same in windows 7
I'm no Office expert but it sounds like you have some seriously damaged files in Office, you could try a repair install perhaps that would fix them for you.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on Dell XPS 8100 with Intel Core i5, [email protected] GHz, 8Gb RAM, worked flawlessly out of the box in April (for five months). For a few weeks, powering off had produced "Installing Windows Updates, 1 (etc) of 8" - each and every time. Two days ago, power on results in normal system start until Windows Log In screen, which lasts about 2 seconds; then monitor displays all sorts of pretty colors. Left alone, the system restarts and ends in Black Screen with Start options; Start in Safe Mode works fine. System Restore works fine. But, removing power and starting again (cold) repeats above performance. Have attached zip file of Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2; but could not figure out how to include a Performance Monitor Report (no User Defined, or System reports shown).

These were both caused by hardware. Please read these to find out what it means and what to try

Your .dmp file shows a stop error of 0x124 which is a general hardware error .. A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint. A:PC will only start in Safe Mode - very slow before when it could start normally

Hello and Welcome to TSF!!

You will probably need to load the files to a cd on another coumputer if you can't start in normal mode.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Also if you have any programs that may prevent system changes (like Spybot's TeaTimer program, Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, and others), make sure you disable them before doing any of the fixes (or accept the changes for the fix we give you when asked by the programs).

Go to My Computer->Tools (or View)->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders (it's Show all files for Windows 98).
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Make sure you downloaded, installed, updated and ran these programs (run in Safe Mode) already - Ad-aware, Spybot and Ewido (only if you have Windows 2000 or XP). If y... Read more

C:\Users\Brandon.Brandon-PC\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-42385-0.sysdata.xml

The computer will give me the BS then give me the choice to load in Safe Mode or not. If I let it turn on normally the computer restarts to blue screen again after reaching the windows screen prior to the log in screen.

If anyone can help me resolve this, it'll be much appreciated.

Hello Brandon and welcome to 7forums!

Looked at the most recent dump files and all point to the 0x116 BSOD known as VIDEO_TDR_ ERROR bug check has a value of 0x00000116. This indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed

I also noted that your graphics card drivers were a tad old:
Code:
12/19/2012 2:38:55 PM C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\atikmdag.sys
But I couldn't pin point the exact model of your GPU so please use the AMD autodetect utility to update the drivers:
AMD Driver Autodetect

So the other day, i was watching a video on my computer and the entire thing just white screened and died,
Then when ever i started it, it would blue screen, then start the whole thing again,
So i re installed windows, and after i reinstalled it will now only start in safe mode, this is the start up screen, as you can see there are some mistakes in the writing.

Even when i tell it not start in safe mode it does.

So my friend talked me through resetting my motherboard bios, but it will still only start in safe mode, i have disabled it in control panel.

This is what it looks like when i unplug the harddrive and turn it on, so it isnt a problem with my HD, so i was wondering if i could reset my motherboard to factory defaults, my motherboard is an asrock 970DE3/U3S3

A:PC will only start in Safe mode even when i tell it to start in normal

Yes, you should be able to reset the bios for the motherboard to defaults. But to do that you need to get into the bios and find the section that has reset to defaults button.

On Friday when booting windows failed to start and went into auto-repair. It did start then and again the next day. However this morning it failed again and the auto-repair was not able to resolve the issue, including when I told it to do a system restore.

I have tried to start windows in safe mode but rather than booting and the list of windows files is done I get a blue screen for 1 second and am back at the windows failed to launch screen (repair windows or start normally options). On two occasions while tapping f8 to get into safe mode while the screen was displaying "boot from cd/dvd" an error message came up stating that there was a disk read error.

A:Windows won't start, also won't start in safe mode.

It sounds like it's possible the hard disk has developed a problem. I'd suggest going to the manuf's website and downloading their tool for checking that specific model drive. Hopefully they will have an ISO that can be burned to CD or USB stick and you can boot into the tool and have it check the drive.

To boot from a CD or USB stick this option must be enabled in the BIOS... and sometimes the advanced boot screen that allows one to choose to boot from an alternate device has to be enabled before it can be accessed during boot (usually by tapping F12, but it can be different for different machines). So you might have to boot into the BIOS to enable these things before it will boot from a CD or USB stick.

But maybe someone else has another preliminary, easier option to try first. But a read error sounds indicative of a HD problem.

#1 Hi, basically this probem arose from nowhere. I came back from holiday 6 days ago and my pc took longer than i remember to boot. Only till i realised the next day and day after it was getting longer and some times not loading past the 'Windows' screen. Each time when it hasn't loaded fully, I turn it off and re-boot pressing F8 to get up safe mode, which doesn't work at all.
It gets stuck on '/avgdiseh' doesn't load past and will stay like that till turned off. Start up repair does absolutely nothing, it asks to do System restore which then errors and reboots, if i press cancel it stays on the 'Scanning' screen for hours.. (8 hours today)

#2 I've now seemed to run into another problem trying to boot from my CD drive. First time I loaded everything correctly got to 'install windows' screen clicked start up repair which did nothing. Ever since that windows won't detect my CD drive even though it opens and did read CD's.(watched a film on it the other day)

I've looked online and other people have had the same problems and clearly i haven't found a solution yet. I've tried cleaning the inside of my case, double checking connections, changing boot options. From what i've read its either a failed HDD, failed RAM (, or failed CD drive in the case of my second dilemma)

I'm just curious as to whether anyone can pin point what the problem is. If its an easy fix or whether it is possibl... Read more

I don't know what happened exactly but my computer said that it was installling updates randomly and it started shutting down. i let it do its thing and then when it rebooted it and i typed in my password and stuff and then when it goes to the desktop page it has a light blue color on the screen and none of the icons or the bar at the bottom with my icons down there or start button is there. it's completely clear. I was wondering if someone could help me with this problem so that i don't have to pay someone to come and fix it.

Thanks.

Hi Lava, I hope you get it fixed. I have to say, I'm not an expert.

First, give your PC specifications. And, it would be really helpful if you could attach a screenshot of what your desktop looks like now, 'cause I have no clue. By updates, you do mean Windows Update, right? Also, could you please give a more accurate description of your problem...

I got handed this laptop today - it belongs to the daughter of one of my bridge partners - and I cannot get it to boot into anything other than Safe Mode.

It appears to have something of a checkered history. It was built by Dell with Win 7 HP installed, at least there is a Dell COA sticker on the bottom of it, but it is now running Win 8.0 Pro. She says it was taken to a repair shop in the town, about whom I know nothing, and they said 'We've put 8 on it'.

I managed to get to Control panel/Recovery and do a restore to the 12th October and I was then able to get it to connect to my router. I installed Malwarebytes, it updated and ran a scan which showed 1012 entries for PuPs and 2 instances of Rogue.Multiple. All appeared to be properly quarantined and a second scan, after a re-boot, came up clean, but it still will not boot into anything other than Safe Mode.

I am beginning to suspect that either the Win 8 install was botched or it is a pirate copy. On Control panel/system, the product id comes up as 'Not available', and there is no 'Windows update' section on the control panel.

If it is a legitimate copy, how do I get it to boot normally ?  There is no recovery partition.

If it is not a legitimate copy, since it has a Win 7 COA, what is the easiest way to revert it to Win 7 ?  Data isn't a problem, there is very little on this system and I can recover what there is.

Chris Cosgrove

A:Dell Inspiron N5040 - Safe mode only

I'm almost 100% sure the Win8 on the machine is illegal.  Since there's no recovery partition but there's a COA I'd say to download the correct version of Win7 from here and do a clean install.

Hello,

Recently my dad's computer had a corrupted hive and boot.ini. Via this website, I was instructed to run a chkdsk /r while in the recovery console. Everytime I used his OS disk to get into the recovery console, it prompted me for a password and I didn't know it (nor could I leave it blank). I decided to use my OS disk from my computer and I could fix the problem. Now, though, everytime I startup the computer, it prompts me to start windows normally, in safe mode, in safe mode with networking... To give further information...on that same screen there is an option for Windows XP and Windows XP Home Edition. Don't know if that has something to do with it. They both work though when I press enter on either one. Could anyone help me stop the computer from prompting me??? Thank you for any help.

I recently attempted to clean my brother's computer after he aquired a virus from the torrent file program he uses. Regardless, I cleaned a trojan and a backdoor from his system from safe mode. I can not boot in normal mode. Everytime i try the system gets hung up at the windows loading screen then the screen turns black and sits there. I have to hard reboot. I ahve used a repar CD and i have come across an error 0x800700b7, i have also recived this when i tried to work around this problem "identifier {9dea862c-5cdd-4e70-acc1-f32b344d4795}"

You can spend a lot of time trying to fix the boot problem and clean the virus from the computer, or you can nuke it and reinstall Windows. I wouldn't bother trying to fix it, personally - I'd back up what I could and then I'd install Windows again.

Yesterday, my son was playing Star Wars, Empire at War and when he closed it down, he got impatient and forced a shut down by pressing the power button and holding it down while it was trying to shut the program down. Ever since then, when I try to start up my computer, it starts up part way and then it tells me that it can't start windows (7) properly. I then get the option of running the startup repair, which I've done now 4 times. The last couple of times I've run it, it has told me that it cannot automatically repair the problem and so it sends an error report.

I went to advanced system repair options, and I tried to do a system restore, but it wouldn't do it because no system restore point had been chosen by the computer. When I tried to choose a system restore point, it wouldn't let me.

I've tried to start the computer in safe mode so that I can run a system restore, but it still gets all jammed up when it tries to start in safe mode and, after loading some programs, it suddenly goes to an all gray screen. It stays on the all gray screen for about an hour (while the hard drive is working away) only to then tell me that there is a problem with startup and that I need to run the startup repair.

Any ideas for how to fix this? Thanks.

Hi and welcome to TSF do you have a install or recovery disc from which you can attempt to repair the machine, forcing the shut down seems to have corrupted the operating system this may be one of the steps you could attempt Use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows

So, I bought a new laptop and the internet has never worked right. I will consistently get a DNS Error code, no matter what I try. I've tried wiping it several times, updating all networking drivers, uninstalling the pre installed Mcafee and what not. It's only at my house, though. I can take it to class or to the public library and it connects with no problem. I thought it was our internet at home that was having the error, but the tech guy has been here four times to fix it and every time it still doesn't work. I also have several phones and other laptops connected to our internet that work fine. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hey everyone, here is my serious problem.

Unfortunately, I was stupid enough to let my "Free Space" on my entire computer get to less than 5 GB left. It may possibly have been at 4 or 3 GB, actually.

My computer then froze, and I went to restart it. However, it would just take me to the blue screen of death. I've tried booting it up in every way I could think of, in normal mode, in Safe Mode, with the "Repair Windows" option, and everything else. My computer will simply not get past the "Loading" screen.

On the blue screen of death, it does say "Check to see if you have adequate disk space", so I am guessing that is a big part of the problem.

But here's my question. How do I free up disk space when my computer cannot even run?

*Note: I've tried going on the BIOS and Advanced Start Up, but I can't seem to find any options that would help with my situation..*

A:BSOD: Cannot start up normally, cannot start up in Safe Mode, "Inadequate Disk Space"

Hi,

Use Ubuntu to free the space.

You can get it from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Step #2 on that page shows you how to create the USB/CD.

Then once you boot into it (choose the option where it just runs off the USB/CD) you can use it to delete your files or to copy them from the Windows Drive to an external hard drive (Note: Do not copy anything to the Ubuntu Filesystem as it will not be saved on shut-down)

Reventon

Hi all, you were a great help on my last question. Since I am not real computer savy, I need to know if on an Inspiron 8200 laptop, is the processor easily replaced like on a desktop? I currently have a 1.20 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4. I would like to put a faster processor. I know on a desktop, they just plug in. Is the Inspiron that way or is it soldiered to the Mother Board. If it can be replaced easily, then I would like to do so. I hope you can help me. Thanks

First all, I have the plug that connects my TV to my laptop, but when I set that up, TV OUT does not work (in other words I do not see my laptop image on my TV).

Do I need to reboot after plugging the cables from the TV to the laptop?

or is there some settings i need to change on the computer?
Also, I would love to know if TV IN is possible (can I watch TV on my laptop)
Again, its a Dell inspiron 8200 with WINDOWS XP PRO installed and running.
Appreciate help asap, THAnKS!

Don't really know about the 8200, but on my 7500, I have to go into Display Properties - Settings - Advanced button - Displays tab and enable the TV out...

As far as the TV in goes, it would have to have a TV in connector, or a TV tuner card...

Hi there, I am using Windows 8 on Dell Inspiron N5110 15R laptop. I had to upgrade my BIOS so as to install and use the most recent operating system, Windows 8. I was Windows 7 user and had to clean install Windows 8. In Windows 7, I was very much familiar with safe mode, but today, when I booted Windows 8 into safe mode (Using PC Settings, Advanced Startup etc.), and I selected "Safe Mode With Networking" on restart, and then a blue Windows logo appears with waiting dots circling, and after that the screen is just black, and even after waiting for quite some time, it is still there, as it "freezed". If you guys know the solution and can help me solve this issue, I'll be very much grateful. Thank you for your time reading this. I look forward to your opinions and suggestions. Thanks.

Hi Emilie2011,
Welcome to the Community, it could be an issue with the harddrive. I suggest you can start by running the Hardware diagnostics.
To run diagnostics press and hold down the "Fn" key (on the lower left hand bottom of the keyboard)  and turn on the system,it should ideally bring up screen showing Pre-Boot System Assessment.
Another way to run the diagnostics go to F12 screen, scroll down using the "up" and "down" arrow key, choose diagnostics  and press Enter.
If the diagnostics shows any error code/message please post it back.
Since your system is getting stuck on black screen with blinking cursor, you can also try to release flea power.
To release flea power disconnect the charger and remove the battery, press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds, reconnect the battery and charger.Turn on the system and see if it boots to Windows.
Hope this helps,
Thank You
Roshan.

Hi,

I'm having some problems with a 6 year old Dell Inspiron 8200 with a Geforce 440 graphics card.
First it started with the visible area of the screen getting small and centered in the middle of the screen. It also got vertical stripes. This happened usually 2 minutes after booting to Windows XP. So I tried installing new drivers, which didn't help. Then I removed the graphics card and put it back in, hoping it's just a connection problem. After this is seemed to work, the computer was running for about 2 hours fine. But then the next time it booted, the old problem was back. I removed the card again and put it back in and again it was working fine. But then when I turned it off again and wanted to restart it, the real trouble began. It has the same problem with the display like before, but additionally I get a blue screen before Windows finishes starting up(it happens while the XP logo is on the screen with the progress bar beneath it), the computer resets and starts again. The blue screen disappears too quickly to be read.
If I try to enter the BIOS setup it stops where it should show the hard disks and gets stuck there. But this was already the case, when the computer was still more or less working.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
Bengt

A:Problems with Dell Inspiron 8200

Does your Dell have onboard graphics? If so, let the computer sit off to cool down for a few hours just to be sure, then start up and see if you can get into the bios. Reset the bios to the onboard graphics save changes and shut down. Remove the geforce card, connect to the onboard graphics port, then start up and see if it works correctly.

After reading a bunch of old (2005/06)posts on this site. I have a clouded idea what I need to do, BUT, one I can't seam to locate the EEprom to short out for starters. I also can't seam to locate the recommended password generator to crack the password.

Could someone help me out and point me in the right direction or provide me with some details on what i need to do.

On the laptop you have to press the Function key and one of the F# keys across the top to enable the second screen. Look for the key with a picture of a monitor on it. You can also likely enable it by going to the Control Panel, then Display and the Settings tab. right click on the second monitor and select enabled.

It runs on batter just fine. However, with the computer thinks that it only gets 70 watt power supply, the battery wont charge. i've heard that it can be fixed by replacing the motherboard, but $600 is just not in my budget right now. I've also read something about replacing the power source.

Here's something else i've found a while ago

"If the laptop works on battery, my guess is that the inline ceramic DC fuse is open. This is a small oblong block be 1/4 inch long, 1/8 inch high and wide, surface mounted very near the AC adapter jack. This can be bypassed with a suitable Picofuse, be 8 amps, soldered across the conductive ends of the existing fuse case. I would only look into this if the warranty is expired. It is an easy fix, be $2 for the replacement fuse, be $10 for silver epoxy if it risky to solder in the area. I've done this on three laptops which are still functioning - only one with the epoxy. I wish I knew the mechanism for the DC overload, one of the laptops had a water spill, the other two are mysteries to me."

1. I would attempt this if there was some sort of more "cookbook" instruction from anyone who has ever attemped the repair.
2. If someone can point... Read more

A:Dell Computer Wont Go Into Safe Mode

It's F8 - it just takes hitting it at the right time (unless it's been disabled) - check the instructions here:http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam

Hi, I have a very strange problem with my old Dell Inspiron 8200 - hoping someone may be able to help.

The screen has started displaying weird characters in various locations, and I have found no way to fix it. Sometimes the screens are virtually unreadable, sometimes only a few weird characters appear.

Under extended warranty, Dell replaced the motherboard, the video card and the screen, so now have all these brand new, but still the problem persists. The display looks a bit different (in a weird way) each time I try to boot up, sometimes the system boots up OK, and other times it doesn't. Haven't been able to isolate it to any particular keystrokes or whatever. The bios was upgraded to A11 which seems to be the latest.

I'm now at a dead end, as are Dell. Any advice would be a great help.
Thanks a lot!

THis is a pentium4 laptop running XP home edition. There is a wireless home network set up as well, and that connection is strong.

The problem is that boot takes anywhere from 5-15 minutes. And it takes a long time for any program to open, and for the computer to respond to input. If I click to close a window, it can take about a minute to follow the command.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on how to imporve the responsiveness of this laptop.

Oh yes, Citrix is installed on this computer, and we cannot figure out how to uninstall it (or if we should). We have even tried to reinstall the OS, but it wouldn't complete the installation.

Help?

Hi. I'm going to try to be as descriptive as possible with this, because I'm pretty stumped about what to do next.

I recently obtained an older laptop yesterday from a friend who doesn't want it anymore and I'm running into some strange issues with it. It's currently running WinXP Pro on it and it has 512MB of ram. The rest of the technical specs can be found here.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins8200/en/sm_en/specs.htm#1103762

Now there are two main issues I'm encountering. One is a problem with the bios, and another is a problem with the screen resolution.

The bios issue: *SOLVED*

I cannot navigate the bios setup on this laptop. When the PC boots up, the dell logo appears and at the bottom of the image it prompts you to press F2 if you want to enter bios setup. Doing so takes you to the bios's main screen, however the pc freezes at this point. The system time monitor isn't working. The keyboard doesn't work and I can't select any options. Nothing can happen. It just gets there and halts. The only way out is to hard reset the pc. Despite not being able to enter the bios, the PC boots up into windows just fine.

The resolution issue:

When the pc boots up, the dell bios logo appears, however it doesn't fill the laptop screen fully. It's at the smallest resolution possible, with just blank space around the area. The ... Read more

I was given a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. System information says its Windows XP Service Pack 3, Intel Mobile CPU 1.6 GHz and 256 MB of RAM. This system is slow. It takes 15 minutes or so to boot up but even after it does boot up if you click on a program it might take 5 or 10 minutes for the program to open. Occasionally the most pointer disappears and then comes back. Also, when you try to close programs it takes just as long to close them as it does to open them. Can anyone help to get this running again. Thanks for the help.

I have a used dell inspiron 8200 (approx 2002 vintage?)that I have had for ~ a month (I had been using an older dell laptop 4000? for the internet for a year before that. The fans on the newer laptop were certainly audible and they certainly turn off and on repeatedly for as long as the machine is on. I was also under the impression that they came on at startup.

My impression derived from the fact that I was startled or alerted a week ago when I felt something was wrong or broken as I pushed the startup button, because all was quiet. I realized the fan wasn't running and I imediately shut the machine down (afraid it would cook). I subsequently tried startups, listening for the fan and letting things run for a minute, but the fan didn't come on.
The fact that neither fan ran, made me worried that some controller was failing instead of the fan, but I could find nothing about it. I decided to replace the fan which is quite an undertaking, but as far as I can tell, I succeded. HOWEVER, I still don't have a fan at startup. I have run the machine for a couple of minutes running EXCEL. Since this machine is used, I don't have Dell's diagnostics disk. There is a short diagnostic routine in startup/f2 that the machine passed. I am wondering if I am simply wrong and the fan shouldn't start until the processor is hot (but the lack of noise was clearly unusual). I am aware that there are supposed to be heat sensors that will slow the processor down and sh... Read more

A:Solved: Fan problem? on Dell inspiron 8200

It normally wouldn't allow itself to overheat to the point of damage, but if a sensor is faulty it may not know to shut down. Download SIW (the very last one at the bottom of the page, "SIW Without Installer") and run it. On the left under Hardware click Sensors and you'll see your temperatures. Anything around 20-30 degrees is normal (the CPU may be as much as 40), but anything above that could be a problem. If you see anything below room temperature, something has obviously gone wrong.

For what it's worth, fans generally don't run on laptops unless they need to.
