Q: Windows 7 x64 Black Screen on Startup NO Cursor

I am having Windows 7 x64 go to a black screen without a cursor on boot after the Windows splash screen appears. The problem is intermittent and started happening after a Windows automatic update. I can boot into safe mode and after a number of times pressing the restart or power button Windows finally comes up with no black screen.

Things I have tried:
1) Memory check - all good
2) chkdsk - all disks, no problems
3) Windows System Repair - got error code = 0x490, don't know what to do with that
4) Waited for hours for something to happen while black screen up - nothing ever did
5) Checked for outdated drivers - all up to date

Hi, I'm new to this forum and have a problem with the starting up my Gateway dx4320 desktop running Windows 7.

Symptoms:
will startup to Windows logo, then go black with a solid white cursor in the center of the screen
tried all Advanced boot options, safemode, etc, but still not working
can get into the Bios screen
booted up the gateway recovery disc & also windows repair disc.  However, startup repair results showed no problems
Tried to do a system restore but apparently all restore points are now gone
I did notice that the initial Gateway logo screen is now an Acer screen
Since I need to retrieve all the data on my Gateway, i have connected harddrive to a borrowed, newer desktop running Window 8. The gateway drive shows as drive E, but when I click on it, I get a Location is not available / Access denied error message

On the newer computer running windows 8, I was able to run Malwarebytes, GMER, TDSSKiller on drive  E.  All returned 0 problems detected

** So, would appreciate any assistance in getting rid of the black screen problem,

**  or perhaps guidance on the best way to copy over the contents of my gateway harddisk to the newer computer running Windows 8, so I can do a System Recovery on my old gateway and copy the contents back over to it.

I've seen a bunch of threads with similar issues, but most seem to get piled on with people either dealing with or addressing situations with slightly different details, so I figured I'd start my own thread.

The story: 2 weeks ago, my Windows 7 64-bit system was working fine. The morning of June 30, I powered it down, packed it into my car and relocated about 400 miles away. I moved the computer into my new apartment on July 2, and there it sat unused until the evening of July 11. (I used my macbook pro in the mean time). When I powered it on this evening, the initial boot process seemed normal until Windows started to load. I got to the screen that says "Copyright Microsoft Corporation" below the animated progress bar. That window stays up for 5-6 seconds, and then the screen flickers and goes blank. A couple seconds later, the mouse pointer appears. All I can see on the black screen is the white mouse pointer, and that's where I'm at now.

Some details that seem relevant and that may differentiate my situation from some of the others:

The mouse pointer responds as it normally would.
I cannot pull up the task manager. (i.e. CTL+ALT+DEL and CTL+SHIFT+ESC do nothing)
The Num Lock key toggles the NumLock indicator light on the keyboard.
Safe Mode exhibits the same problem (black screen, active cursor), but at a lower screen resolution. - Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Command Prompt both do this.
Running Last Known Good Configuration did not help.

A:Windows 7 - Black Screen w/ Active Cursor on Startup

The best method to fix this is from a Windows bootable CD or DVD.  Do you have that?  Can you get into Command Prompt if you do not have it?  Does someone else you know have a Windows 7 OS?  You can make one from any windows 7 OS.
Once you get to Command prompt, do the following:
in C:\ type
chkdsk /r /f
then hit enter.  This will try to repair the corrupt files For Windows 7 using repair method can get you to the CMD prompt.

If you do not have this then you can use a boot disk from another company.  I use Kaspersky Rescue Disk  and following the instructions.  This will boot to a OS that will allow you to get your files off your HD, and then scan and fix issues with it.

Overall the EXPLORERFRAME.DLL is more than likely the issue.  So get your files first, you can also do this by disconnecting the HD and plugging it into your other computer as a USB device.  or by using the Rescue Disk and doing it that way.

If both do not work, then you need to reinstall your OS.

Hi everyone

Earlier this evening, I updated my computer, which included about ten new important ones, and four optional. One of the optional ones was an NVIDIA drivers update. Thinking little of it, I set it to update, then watched a movie on the computer while I waited. During it, the screen went black three times (as if the power had been cut) and the computer's noise level dropped significantly. After less than a second, it was back to normal in all cases and afterwards, after seeing the update (where the NVIDIA driver had failed to update), I figured that was the problem. Windows Update said it needed to restart in order to install the drivers correctly, and I let it. Unfortunately, every time I start up now, the screen goes instantly black, and there is nothing but my regular windows cursor. The left side goes on a bit beyond my screen (I can move the cursor off-screen), but that's it. I have tried starting up with my the driver CD for my monitor, the one for my graphics card, as well as my Windows Restore disk. None of them work. I also can't enter Safe Mode because it never starts up, no matter how much I press F8. I've even tried hooking up an old keyboard, in case the USB ports somehow didn't work that soon in the startup or something. No dice, it won't even light up the Lock keys.

Any help would really be appreciated!

Whenever I boot Windows 7, after it starts, instead of showing the login screen, it show a black screen with a movable cursor. Now, I can go into safe mode, and it works, but, hell, I can even put my password on that black screen, press enter and it will go into Windows and work just fine. But the thing is, it's supposed to show the login screen, not just a black one, so I'm a bit worried of what might be causing the problem, and whether or not it could expand into something worse. Any help would be appreciated.

Good day,

This is my first, and hopefully last, thread on these forums as I've been experiencing a repeating problem over the last few days. After turning on my PC (Custom-built: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit; AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1100T Processor (6 CPUs) ~3.3 GHz; 8192MB RAM), Windows will proceed as normal up until the "Welcome"-screen. After this screen, instead of my desktop, I'm left with nothing but a working cursor on a black screen. Keyboard, Ctrl+Alt+Delete/Ctrl+Shift+ESC and clicking with the mouse are all useless at this point.

So far I've been able to restore functionality by doing a hard reboot into Safe Mode and using the system restore tool to a previous restore point each time. I've tried using the "low resolution" and "last known working configuration" options in the boot menu on startup, but these gave me the same results as a normal boot. I've held off trying many other things recommended on the internet considering my limited knowledge and understanding of this subject, as it is almost never a good thing to simply experiment with these kinds of things.

I've downloaded the trial version of Malwarebytes and used it to scan my pc thoroughly. It came up with several infections by what seems to be a trojan. The so-called "Vendor" is called "Trojan.Agent", and these infections seem to occur in mostly randomly-named maps in the Temp files (e.g. temp\<random>\plugin.dll) and more specifically this... A:Black screen with cursor enabled on startup (Windows 7)

At the cost of moving this thread upwards, I'd like to add to my previous post that Malwarebytes found a Trojan.Agent file in the registry. The malicious software found by Malwarebytes is described below, and a screenshot of the scan results is attached to this post.

I have an Acer laptop. I've upgraded to Windows 10 last month from Windows 7. It worked fine for the first month, but while I was watching a movie on my laptop, and opened up another program I like to use, the another program wouldn't respond. I tried
to close it, but wouldn't close. So I close the DVD player (VLC Media Player) and tried to close the program, nothing helped. I tried to end task by using the Task Manager, but wouldn't open. I had no choice, but to shut down my laptop by holding the
power button. When I reboot my laptop, I didn't see the Windows logo on the screen, so I held the power button again. But when I reboot again, however, it finally showed the Windows logo, but no spinning circle for a couple of minutes. I saw the screen that
is getting directed to the startup repair. Unfortunately, it didn't show anything at all but the cursor. I tried again rebooting, everything, nothing helped. I went to the local computer store to solve the problem, the tech said that my laptop's hard drive
got fried. Now I have to get a new laptop, but my old one is fixable, but it's very expensive to fix it.

Hello all,

I am currently experiencing some issues with an Hp Pavilion dv5, running Windows 7 Home Premium. After startup, the windows logo is displayed, and then the screen goes black with only the cursor visible. The cursor is movable. I have tried booting into safe mode, however, the same black screen with movable cursor appears.
I have already tried a number of solutions I found online, and all thus far have failed. I tried pressing control+alt+delete at the black screen, and nothing comes up. I have tried booting in low-res mode to see if a graphics driver was the issue, still only a black screen with cursor. I have tried connecting to an external monitor with no luck as well. I have also ran memtest, and a hard drive test, both of which showed no issues.

I have already ran Malwarebytes offline through Hirens BootCD, and also ran Offline Windows Defender, to get rid of any malware or viruses. I have also loaded a Windows 7 Repair disk and have attempted a Startup Repair (in which it shows no issues), a System Restore (which is unsuccessful), and have also tried booting with the last known good configuration (which also did not work).
I did some more exploring using the command prompt on the Windows 7 repair disk. When I run “bootrec /scanos”  I receive a message saying:

“Successfully scanned Windows installations.
Total identified Windows installations: 0
The operation completed successfully.”

Although this was originally issued for Vista, the techniques apply to any HP system and/or Windows O/S, IMO.  I would try the steps outlined.

Hi

just been given a pc that has the above happening.

Done a google on the subject and it seems to point to either the mobo or the HDD or the last installed driver.

But I can do a system restore to the 28th of october and it works fine for a couple of reboots then it does the same thing.

I ran the inbuilt check system the pc has and it didnt find any issues with hardware.

I have avast running, malwarebytes running and have run rkill.exe all with nothing found.

The PC is only 2 years old.

There has been no new installs of any software or drivers, and the owner says it was closed down 2 nights ago and took 15 minutes or so to shut down.

and since then it has started up once ok then locked up and started displaying the fault.

Im quite happy to back up the customers files and do a full reinstall as a last resort, but if it then happens again I need to be able to tell him what if anything is faulty.

Edit

just found a thread that says avast can cause the issue, this would make sense as it auto updates after the system restore.

im going to disable avast for now and see if it clears the issue.

Edit

So I ran safemode and disable avast as a service, and the pc booted up fine.

BUT...when it loads the desktop and the starts to load the various things in the system tray the desktop flickers and then it starts again building the system tray icons.

reenabling the avast service causes the issue to return so this is most definate the culprit.

Im going to do a... Read more

After the windows starting screen I keep getting a black screen with cursor. Have the ability to move the cursor, but that's about all. Can't start anything, not even task manager through ctrl+alt+delete. I'm using windows 7 pro 64bit for a few months already. Haven't installed anything myself for the last week. Restoring system tells me a windows update happened the last time the PC was on, so I'm guessing that's what caused it, other then that I was only gaming a bit.
restoring system to a date where it did function through windows 7 install DVD (tried several restore points)
repairing the startup through windows 7 install DVD, yet it gave no problems back.
repairing the memory through windows 7 install DVD, yet it gave no problems back.
Running in safemode, gives lower res (bigger mouse cursor), but still black screen without anything to do.
Running in safemode with command prompt, but no command prompt is showing up
Using windows+r to bring up command doesn't function
Running in lowres, brings same result as safemode
Disconnecting all USB devices

Looked online, but every solution I found, either managed to get to still have access to task manager, safemode working or system restore working. Any help is appreciated ^^

Hi,

Over the past few weeks I have been having this problem where my computer will start up, post the BIOS, and get past the windows loading screen, but at that point it goes to a black screen with nothing but my cursor. I cannot bring up task manager by pressing ctrl alt delete or ctrl shift esc. It's just a black screen except for my cursor which moves with mouse input. I've tried booting in safe-mode with the same results, as well as low-res mode from advanced boot settings, but no go.

In my research I have found that many people give up, wipe the drive, and start over with a fresh install of Windows. I am trying to avoid that because starting over, setting preferences, downloading all my programs, having to find files before the wipe, seem like more hassle than just fixing the problem.

So far, I've used Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 that I burned to a CD, and scanned for malware, but it didn't find anything to remove. Then, upon viewing a youtube video, I used the program's registry editor to see if the Winlogon Shell & Userinit entries had been altered. They hadn't and looked exactly as they should. I even ran the FRST program from command line using my Windows repair CD, but it didn't return any errors or malware either.

At this point, I'm kind of at a loss as to where to proceed from here. Any ideas?

Your response, and any suggestions, is much appreciated.

Thanks,

-Steve

Hi

I have a similar issue to this thread http://forums.techguy.org/virus-other-malware-removal/945975-no-startup-applications-any-kind.html

Basicaly as in that thread i have a black screen with just a cursor. Accessed the web via task manager. The black screen occured straight after i downloaded Avast (To replace AVG which has been warning about a virus but could not resolve it).

I followed the istructions from CatByte, except when i try to call up Controll Folder...nothing happens *It does not open up). I am aware i havea virus of some sort, but if there is anyway to get my desktop back and possibly remove the virus then id very much appreaciate any advice you may have.

Someone else suggested a reboot. Im not sure this would work but no way to fund out as im not sure where to initiate a reboot since i cant open controll panel aps due o virus in folder.

Hello, I have a Presario CQ56.

We have had this issue before. Several years ago my laptop began having startup issues, where it would get stuck on a black screen with the mouse cursor right after the Windows page. Since it's been over three years, I don't recall exactly what everything we did to fix the problem was, but I know that the problem persisted even after recovering to factory settings with disks. Eventually we gave up and replaced the hard drive and it's worked fine until recently.

Right now, the black screen w/ cursor happens for a maximum of ten seconds before and after the windows screen, but once it's up it runs fine. I know the issue is likely to get worse. If it IS the hard drive, is there a way to test this? Are there any diagnostics we can run to determine a possible cause? Should we nip it in the bud and replace the hard drive right away?

The hard drive that replaced the original was a completely different brand if I recall. I'm curious to know if this problem could be caused over time by the fact the laptop runs hot. It always has, the fans are very loud, and if I remember correctly that is a problem with every Presario CQ56. It wasn't exactly an expensive piece of equipment.

If anyone knows of possible solutions it would be much appreciated.

Does this problem happen in Safe Mode?

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.

The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

The following screen will appear, click on Copy to Clipboard.

In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.

Hello! I've been having some issues with my Windows 7 recently. It started with my system randomly rebooting the past month or so. This would happen anywhere from a couple times a week to a few times a day. The last couple of days, I've noticed that it's having some trouble starting up. Sometimes it would freeze on the windows loading screen. And this evening, after the windows loading screen, it just ends up at an empty black screen with a movable cursor. I have attempted to restart several times, but I keep getting this black screen. I am able to boot up in safe mode, however, which is what I'm on at the moment.

Any ideas?

Hi Kwik87, and welcome to Bleeping Computer.

Since you can't boot normally or into Safe Mode I would suggest performing a Repair Installation, also known as a Inplace Upgrade.  This will not effect your data.  This process includes the Startup Repair.

A Windows 7 Repair Installation will require a installation disc.

If you do not have a Windows 7 installation disc you can download a free legal ISO image of Windows 7 SP1 at  Windows 7 Forums.  You will need to download the same version of Windows 7 that you have installed,  This image is hosted by the Digital River store which is an official distribution partner of Microsoft.  This is a genuine untouched image which is safe to download.

Attention:  If you do have a Windows installation disc, skip Part A and go to Part B, Step 1b.

Part A, Steps 1a - 6a

The ISO image will need to be burned to a DVD in order to create a bootable installation disc.

2a)  Insert a blank DVD into your CD/DVD drive tray, and then close the tray.

3a)  Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc.

4a)  Click on the Browse for a file icon:

5a)  Locate the ISO file you want to burn, and click on the Open button.

6a)  Click on the blue arrow to start burning the bootable DVD.

Upon resuming my computer from hibernation, it resumed to only a black screen with a movable cursor. No keys seemed to work. I left it there, unaware it was not plugged in, and the battery ended up dying. Restarting it with power gave me the Toshiba start screen, but seemed to boot immediately into, again, the black screen with a cursor.

Hello,I'm having trouble booting up. SAMLIB.dll is a security account manager dynamic linked lib. A repair install from the dvd should fix the problem unless you are infected with malware, or have a modified system

Ok guys, I have to start this, as there is no definitive answer to this problem:

On startup, after the usual scroll bar, the black screen... with a mouse cursor... and it stays there for hours.
I have tried the following solutions:
1. Bring up task manager and manually run explorer... ctrl+alt+del or any other combination will not respond
2. Hit shift key to bring up sticky key dialog: yes, but there are no options except yes or not...
3. System restore: tried 3 or 4 dates, all the same...
4. Safe mode with command prompt to run msconfig: still the black screen, no safe mode, no command prompt...
5. Faulty event log: renamed the log directory, no effect.
6. Permissions on Rpc for Networking: done, no effect
7. Make sure the shell for the startup points to explorer.exe: changed in regedit (cmd under repair), no effect, after a couple of reboots it was still pointing to cmd.exe...
There are no new usb devices, no new hardware... this happened after a file open froze on the user of this pc...
I really need you ideas guys... I always solved strange problems with the combined brains on this forum... hope it will work this time also

Hi all, I'm running a nice Dell XPS M1530 that I've had for about 18 months. Everything was fine until about 2 months ago, when I started noticing that my Windows Updates couldn't check for updates. I was told to run chkdsk, but didn't because it was in "read-only" mode.

Now, when I boot up my machine, all I see is my cursor (which I can move) before the Windows Vista log-in page is supposed to show up.
--I have tried starting in safe mode, and the same thing happens.
--I've tried to restore to "last known good configuration" and the same thing happened.
--I've tried removing the battery, pressing and holding the power button, and trying again.
--I ran the Dell Express Test, and I received one error: Error Code OFOO: 137B. Msg: DVDRW_32 - Drive media is missing or blank.

One time, I got the blue screen of death that I believe said "Driver Power State failure". Then my machine shut down.

I'll post some pictures later on, but can't right now because I'm on an ancient computer. If you know of anything I can do, please help me.

Ben

When I startup, the computer will flash the screen to do safemode, etc., but then lag for 30-45 seconds before booting up the XP screen (with the blue scrolling) Then everything is fine with the computer after it boots.

It's driving me crazy.

some causes.

1. Recently installed software/drivers

2. Video card or video driver problems

3. Disconnect all USB devices during the boot process, see if this solves it

My computer picked up a nasty virus. (Actually, my 16 year old daughter did, but that's another story...rrr) So, the first thing I did was try to restore it to an earlier date. When the restore program restarted, all I got was a black screen with a blinking cursor.

What I've done since then:
1) Reformatted hard drive and reloaded windows 7 from OEM Disk. No change in behaviour. The restore program works fine, but when it restarts, I get the same screen. I've done it twice.
2) Started up in DOS using USB stick, ran CHKDSK as well as other commands, and the HD appears to be fine.
3) Disconnected everything; USB, DVD Drive, peripherals, etc, but still windows won't load.
4) I've changed the BIOS every way imaginable, but it still won't load.
5) I figured that maybe I got one of those BIOS viruses you hear about, so I reflashed the BIOS using DOS. Still, windows won't load.

I believe that all of my components in my system are fine, but there is something small that I'm missing - maybe some way that the computer is instructed to load windows that got corrupted... I'm only intermediate in my knowledge / ability to work with computers, so I'm certain somewhere out there has got something good for me to try. Thanks for any help.

Computer is an Acer Aspire X3910-U3012 which is a Pentium E5700 3 GHz with Windows 7.

Hello and Welcome to TSF
Unfortunately you will be unable to do anything without a Windows XP cd
Can you borrow one from a friend and try to do a repair install?

Set the computer to boot from cd first in the BIOS
Place the xp cd in cdrom and reboot
Boot from the xp cd and choose install
Ignore the first repair option and continue with install
When windows finds the previous installation and offers to repair
then do the repair
If you have xp sp2 installed it needs to be incorporated into your xp disk or it will not offer the repair option only the clean install

I dont know what is going on. I originally was trying to get my webcam to work, it wouldn't so i was going through troubleshooting procedures according to its help menu, and it asked me to unplug all usb devices and replug the webcam only, well i wasn't thinking and I just unplugged the external hardrive and the webcam at the same time without "stopping" it. So then it gaev me a message saying it needed to reboot to complete its update or something i wasn't paying attention cause i thought it just needed to reboot for the webcam so i did, then when i rebooted it would show the COMPAQ screen with the three options at the bottom(ESC for boot menu, F1 for BIOS(Ithink) and F10 for recovery, well then it would go immediately to a black screen w/ a white cursor in top left corner, It would idle there permenantly. I would have to ctrl+alt+del to get it to go back and finally i was looking for a way to use my recovery tools cd, that didn't work at first but then it finally came up and said it could do a recovery where it wouldn't delete my files but it would restore the rest to orignal state, so i went ahead and chose that option. It finished and said to reboot. I did, then it still gets stuck at that black screen, doesn't even show the WINXP screen....so i was looking for a way to figure this out and i went to the ESC menu this is what you see there :

Sounds like the boot.ini is messed up, or even the master boot record. You need to get yourself a boot disk/floppy set for your O/S, and run fixboot and fixmbr.

Hello,
I have a similar problem to this forum

I tried following some of the instructions that was given to this person but I think I need more personalized help to mine. I am not able to get the computer past that black screen. I do not have a Windows 7 disk but I was able to make a recovery disk from another computer. From there, I am able to get to the System Recovery window. The only thing I've tried to do is a System Restore but that doesn't seem to fix my problem.

I'd appreciate any help I can get. These malware viruses are awful.

Hello,

I recently upgraded my dell 1645 from windows 7 to 8.

I installed most of the drivers from the dell website even though they were meants for win 7. For some of them I installed drivers directly from the device manufacturers website.

When the computer first starts up it passes the windows logo, and then a black screen is shown (no cursor) for a good 5 minutes. Then it advances to the login (seatle cartoon image) and everything works perfectly.

I had another issue before that I think I solved which was the intel rapid storage technology. Whenever the computer would go to sleep I got a windows BSOD saying driver_irql_less_than_or_equal. But after installing the newest intel rapid storage drivers sleep seams to work perfectly.
The drivers I installed from the manufacturers that arent on the official 1645 driver page:

- ati radeon drivers from ati
- synaptics drivers
- bluetooth 380 drivers, supposed to be 370 I believe but it seems to only be 380 available which people say works.

I also tried running the intel chipset automatic check, which said I was on the latest.

What else can I do?

A:Long Black screen during startup (no cursor)

Welcome to Windows 8 Forums.

1) Does it do this every time?

2) DO yo have any HP Printers or any USB hard drives connected? Sometimes, Printers, HP and Epsons, want to stall the computer on boot. If you do, try unplugging them all and try booting again.

Let's start with that, if you don't have any USB drives or printers, we can try something else. Notice, a CARD READER can do the same thing if you have a card reader in the system. Check Windows Update for any driver updates for Card Readers, they usually show up there.

It's a "Studio XPS 1645", right?

Its really annoying; is there a way to fix this? >.> im not sure how this even happened considering I dont mistreat my laptop or install hacks or whatever

A:Startup problem! Black screen and cursor

So your system starts to the Windows 7 Login Screen right? (just takes longer)

But your question is that it goes to the cursor for 12 seconds then goes to the bootup phase..
Please correct me if I am wrong..

If that is the case, do you have any CDs or flash drives that are plugged into your computer while it is booting up?

Hope this Helps..

Hi all,

I'm thinking right now it's an SSD corruption as nothing else makes sense. I haven't done any installing, downloading, or updating in about a week and after restarting today I got startup repair loading and telling me I had a corrupt registry.

It claimed to fix the problem and now when I boot up I get a black screen with cursor. Most threads tell you to hit ctrl-alt-del to launch task manager but ctrl-alt-del gives me nothing. After about 60s of this cursor my computer will auto-restart itself and repeat this process.

I've done about 3 system restores - all claim to be successful but do not fix the problem. I've also run chkdsk /f from startup repair command prompt which found problems and again, claimed to fix them but did not fix this boot problem.

This leads me to believe it's a corrupt SSD but I'd prefer to exercise all of my options before starting an RMA.

A:Black screen w/ cursor at startup, no ctrl/alt/del

Welcome aboard, Darren.

First, you boot into Advanced Boot Options, choose "last known good configuration" and hit enter. See if it boots to anything or not.

If not, run SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot, and see the results.

hello, i'm trying to fix a problem from my windows 7 install. right now at startup, the windows load screen comes up for about five minutes, followed by a black screen with just a cursor. i left it like this while i was at work today and nothing's happened. the only thing i can do is hit shift five times, which gives me a sticky keys popup. neither option i select from there does anything.

i first started the install on saturday and have gone through two installs, each taking about six hours to complete. from the first install i was getting the same problem, but before the install even completed. on the second install, i was able to boot to the desktop.

everything was working fine, but very slowly. i had bought eight gigs of ram to upgrade from my previous four, so i shut down and installed it. on the next startups i got a blue screen labeled bad_system_config_info. i then took out two of the sticks, leaving one each in the a1 and b1 slots on the motherboard. no more blue screen, but it did suggest i check for startup errors based off the blue screens i suppose. i let that start and run while i slept, but when i woke up it was still going. so i restarted before i left for work, and the black screen is my current issue.

since coming home today, i tried the startup error check from the dvd (worked and found nothing) and also the memory test.

that's the rundown of my install problems. let me list my hardware specs:

So when I start my laptop, after the loading windows screen, it directly goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor/underscore in the top left corner.
I've tried the ctrl-alt-delete. That does nothing.
I've tried the shift 5 times. Nothing
I can't acess safe mode by doing F8. The only screen I can acess is when I press ESC, and that takes me to 1. System Info 2. System Diagnostics 3. Boot Device Options 4. BIOS Setup and 5. System Recovery
System Recovery takes me back to the black screen with the blinking cursor. It sucks.
I've look EVERYWHERE and nothing has worked so far! Help please!

I have a 2.5 year old Toshiba Satellite L300-04N, which has decided to crash during exams.

Earlier today when I brought it out of sleep everything was frozen. I couldn't get into Task Manager so I turned it off using the power button.

When I turned it back on, it said that there may be disk errors it wanted to do a disk check (I don't remember the exact message). I've had this problem before, but usually it does the disk check and all is fine. This time it never started the actual disk check, so after waiting a while I hit the power button again.

Now when I try to start it, I get the Toshiba start up screen but then it gets stuck on a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner. When I press any key it makes angry bleeping noises at me.

I've tried doing a startup repair (a couple of times) with the recovery disk. The first time it did a repair, now when I do a repair it tells me it can't detect a problem. I tried to do a system restore, but it told me there are no restore points. I searched the forums for a while, but I couldn't find any other ideas.

I am more or less competent with computers, but I don't know a lot of computer jargon. Thanks in advance for your help!

EDIT: I also tried F8 at startup. Did nothing.

Sounds like you might need a new hard drive there mate. Go get the AVG rescue disk and scan for errors. if there is any AVG will bring it up. please jot down any errors you get. best 'a luck to ya

You can also do this by going to the boot menu and selecting the bottom choice. I forgot what It's called. After that choose system test and symptom tree. scroll down to hard drive errors and do a scan with that. Also jot down errors and tests passed and failed. GL bro

Hi all,

I've been searching around for someone with my problem, however the things I find don't seem to be exactly the same...

Sometimes when I turn on my computer, the screen will turn on as usual, and there is like a cursor that blinks in the top left corner of the screen, again, as usual. However, it will sometimes stop, and stay on this screen for upwards of a minute or more. The laptop sounds like it's still working, as the fan is going pretty fast and everything sounds like it's spinning, however it doesn't show anything on the screen. After around the minute duration, the screen will go black and the normal boot up process is proceeded with.
From what I've read of other people, they can't even get past this screen, which is why I think my problem is slightly different, or the same, just not as severe. Does my problem also sound like it's the MBR, as indicated by other people's questions on the Internet?

If so, is there any easy way to repair it without having to use a windows 7 disc, as I have a laptop and didn't get a disc with it...

Thanks
Denno

A:Black screen with blinking cursor frozen at very start of startup

If you go to Backup and Restore in Control Panel you can Create a system repair disc. You can then use it to start up and try a repair. You may have to do the same MBR several times before it works.

Firstly I'm on Win7 64. Over the last few weeks I've noticed that after starting up my laptop, and logging in just fine, the screen would go black for a couple of seconds-- my cursor would appear and I could move it around, but the screen would be black. After 10 seconds or so, the Win7 GUI would load just fine and there I would be.

I restarted my PC at 5AM this morning and it did the same. All I did at that point was send an e-mail via Gmail and shut it down again. At 2PM I went to startup my PC and everything went as usual except the PC never left that black screen with the responsive cursor.

I searched here and found that problem many times, but with one difference-- my PC starts fine in Safe Mode.

I used Advanced System Care to fix some registry errors and am currently running a Malwarebytes full scan.

It might be worth noting that I recently installed Batman: Arkham Asylum and as it was frequently crashing, followed some advice to enable everything at startup, which I did, fixing my game problem. That was around the time the black screen first started showing up, and I assumed it was a result of more things taking place during Windows startup.

Whenever the Windows loadscreen passes the screen goes black and I can move a cursor around the screen.
I have had this happen before and fixed it with bootrec.exe but I can't seem to get that to work this time...
Startup repair says it cannot help - Safe mode has the exact same black screen problem.
I have done chkdsk and sfc scannow - Didn't fix it.
When I boot into Kaspersky Rescue from a USB drive it mentions that I need to shut down windows properly before continuing. I would like to do this but I can't.
I have tried changing the active partition on information in some of these other threads - It didn't seem to work.
All disks are healthy according to the DISKPART and Partition Wizard. I have done the HP hardware diagnostic scans and everything comes up fine.

I see that a lot of the advice on the threads is to do a fresh install - Is it really broken beyond repair at this point?

Does anyone have any other ways I can try and fix this problem?

Ok it all started when I ran Nod32 antivirus. I ran it because I had some viruses on my computer that I wanted to get rid of. After the scan there were 180 some detected objects that were quarantined or deleted. So then I restart my computer and after the windows xp logo there is just a black screen with no cursor. And after awhile the computer will just restart and try booting up again. I tried going into safe mode and safe mode with command prompt but I still get a black screen with no cursor. The last known good configuration doesn't work either. I'm pretty frustrated because I did nothing wrong. I am also having a feeling that nod32 might have quarantined some infected files that are essential for Windows Xp to boot. I also do not have any windows xp disks with me because I lost them a very long time ago. Is there anything I can do to fix my computer? Thanks.

hey guys, i'm hoping you can help with my problem.

basically i start windows and everything works perfectly up until the point where i am supposed to see a blue welcome screen which then turns into my password protection. instead what happens is i get a black screen with a mouse cursor which i can move. other than this nothing responds (technically the CD trays but they don't count).

i have tried:
- repairing windows off the CD
- use last known good settings that worked
- safe mode

all of which still have not absolved the issue, in fact when i start when i use any form of safe mode, i get the description at the top and "safe mode" in every corner but other than that the problem sticks.

i am pretty sure it's just not running explorer.exe or something along those lines.

please help, it's only a 2 year old computer and i've already re-formatted the hard drive (in fact put in a new one) last month.

Hi guys, I pretty much can't solve this issue so am seeking for some help :D
So basically after the windows logo it just goes on a black screen with my cursor.
I tried some various solutions on the web:

1. **ctrl+alt+del** is not working
2. **ctrl+shift+esc** is not working
3. **Sticky keys [shift x5]** does not show the ease of use link
4. **ctrl+u** only shows 6 check boxes
5. Used Windows Recovery disk and tried repair as well as command prompt [FRST] to get log and replace services.exe
6. Used [Anvi Rescue disk] to scan and repair

But so far none of these have worked.
Here is the log I received from FRST.

Hoping you guys can enlighten me.

hey guys, i got a problem very similar to this one  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/565585/windows-8-boots-up-with-a-black-screen-and-a-cursor/

i can still log in. everything is just fine(startscreen and stuff) but when i enter my password, the screen just goes black and the only thing i can do is moving the cursor around an opening the task manager. via the task manager i can open vaious programs but i cant run avira (i downloaded it afer i got infected, apparently it didnt help). also, onedrive got a syncronization problem and it says that the "app manager" wont run.
cant really draw any conclusions from this ._.

i did everything instructed in the post i mentiones above and i created 2 report files(attached them below) but that doesnt help me much so i decided to make my own post.
i was hoping someone might be able to help me! thanks in advance

A:windows 8.1 black screen with cursor :/

What happens if you launch "explorer.exe" (without the quotes) from Task Manager?

Please post over in the Am I Infected forum:  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/

If they can't help, then I'd suggest trying the various repair options available in 8.1:
- DISM/SFC.EXE /SCANNOW
- Startup/Automatic Repair
- System Restore (to a point before the problem started happening)
- Refresh the system
- Reset the system (you will lose all your data if you use this option)

Here's the instructions for DISM/SFC.EXE - they are run from the Command Prompt (run cmd.exe (elevated) from Task Manager)

Then please run the following DISM commands to see if there's any problems with the system (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt).  Press Enter after each one:Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealthDism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealthDism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
FYI - I have repaired systems using the last command even though problems weren't found with the first 2 - so I suggest running them all.
You can also run sfc.exe /scannow from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt to check for further corruption.

Hi,

I recently got the malicious Antimalware Doctor virus, and after trying to delete it, my laptop is now stuck in an endless loop and is stuck on the screen just before login, with a black screen and a cursor.

This may have been said before, but my laptop is a HP 530 and my laptop DID NOT come with a recovery disc, therefore I have no backup.

I was wondering if this is possible to fix without a backup disc. NOTE: The files on my laptop are not important, therefore I don't care if my data is erased.

A:Windows Black Screen Cursor

Try tapping F11 while booting up, there should be a recovery option there.

REASON
This happen last night i installed some Antivirus software from china.
This software is working , i have make some change about the work which will auto run when i login windows.I choose don't run them when i login windows as the software recommend i do it.
(i don't know is it the reason my PC gone black screen or not?)
PROBLEM
After 2~3hours later , my computer not working :
- I CAN start chrome , games etc ... but i CANT start Task manger when i press ctrl+alt+del . The windows bar also crash. (it maybe the explorer.exe problem? )
So I think it is just a normal crash and I reboot the computer.
But when I reboot my PC , normally it will have "Welcome Windows" and you need to Enter your password to login. But this page is gone , it just show a black screen with a cursor. When you press any button such as ctrl+alt+del , no any effect. This is the reason to start....
AND I TRIED...
I tried a lot of method to fix this although i'm not good at computer software.
I find many method from the internet and tried .
1. I tried to go to BIOS step and F9 Load Defaults boot device save and exit , reboot PC and not working.
2. I tried F8 and go to all save mode and all of them are not working. (Black screen with a cursor same with normal boot.)
3.I have installed "Bitdefender" before i installed the software from china. I haven't uninstall "Bit" . This "Bit" can run before login windows (press TAB and choose it) So i used &q... Read more

A:Windows 7 (black screen with a cursor)

I remember that before I reboot my PC i'm going to Uninstall the software i don't need , Call "drivethelife 2012" which is using for update PC drive. But i think it was useless so I decided to Uninstall it. But it cant be uninstall and said it was using. So i want to open Task Manger to Close the "drivethelife 2012" but its not working.
The crash is starting with this moment.
Maybe this "drivethelife 2012" has the VIRUS to take down my computer?
I have go to "System Recovery Options " and used " System Image Recovery" to enter my files.
I Deleted "drivethelife 2012" from my documents and reboot . But it still going Black Screen.
The "Bit" also didn't find any VIRUS.

Help. I did a stupid thing. I was trying to install some software for an old iobit zip drive. It said I needed to reboot to finish and so I did. But then it gave me an error that said repairing. BUT I stupidly hit the reboot button, twice. Is my hard drive toast? Or do I have any prayer at all.

Hi,

I recently was directed to a site that I am pretty sure contained a virus, as after I restarted my computer, what normally would be my desktop is now a black screen with a cursor.

I have looked up what I am normally supposed to do when this problem occurs, so I installed FRST (64-bit), and ran a scan, the results of which I attached below. This was run in safe-mode with networking.

Thanks.

Hey just joined this forum because i cant find a fix to my computer with my Nvidia graphics card here's what happened.

- Windows 8.1 update to windows 10 happens.
- Successful upgrade so i start up games to see changes into fps.
- Graphics card is not working so i uninstall them and try to reinstalled them again but to no avail ( should have restarted my PC i know).
- Get message to start restart on safe mode and so i do so.
- Suddenly I receive a black screen to which after many attempts to fix it via online including the installation media flash drive and the start+P key bind whatever thing.

I am extremely pissed that I am not able to play my games, talk to my family and study for my ISU for my school which i need now because the work is inside! I need to fix this but am running out of options.
Also i wouldn't say am bad with computers I do know how to get to control panel, run commands on cmd, etc. But some detailed course of action explaining what do would helpful. Please help.

EDIT: After much research, if possible a link on how to downgrade to windows 8.1 or even 7 would be helpful but not necessary, don't want my computer updating something I don't know.

A:HELP ME! Windows 10 black screen no cursor

I am also a newcomer and had a similar problem when I went from Win 8 to 8.1. Banging away at the keyboard on created more problems [long story]. The problem was with graphics drivers.

I later upgraded the motherboard for other reasons. Next time it happened was again during an update, another BSD. More out of curiosity than anything else, I switched my TV over to input HDMI 2 which is the Desktop input. There was Mr. Microsoft happily upgrading, yet my LCD monitor was still black. I left it alone.

Yep sometime in the next hour my monitor was restored [I had left the room].

It has happened twice since, always with major Windows 10 updates. I don't think we call them updates anymore, they're re-installs. For some reason, the monitor drivers are axed, then a BSD until the new drivers are re-installed.

Of course that might not be your case, but it is one possible explanation.

Hello,

I have ran into some trouble getting a computer up and running.  When this computer came to me it was boot looping and windows would never start. I called Dell tech support and they came out to replace the hard Drive with a imaged drive and it worked fine. So apparently a software issue. However i would like to try and fix this instead of re-installing all the programs and migrating all the files. Also im afraid that if i migrate all the files the infection may just spread to the other HDD.

After running system restore the computer now boots but stays on a black background and only a cursor shown. Ctrl alt delete does not bring up task manager. Ctrl alt esc does not work either.

I was able to run FRST64.exe and generate a log which i have attached to this post.

Also the HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\\Shell
is set to explorer.exe  so that doesn't seem to be the issue.

Hello. Recently had a virus and have been going through the steps here on bleeping computer to help get rid of it. The last thing I was told to do was run the farbar scan tool and to copy and paste a code and hit fix. Upon doing so the computer prompted for a restart. It now won't get to the log in screen. I've tried booting in safe mode and I've also tried last known working configuration as suggested and nothing has worked unfortunately. I was told to come here. Hopefully something can be done. Thanks a ton.

A:Windows won't get to login screen, black screen and cursor

Tap F8 at boot and select Repair Computer from the Advanced Boot Options. Do a System Restore to a date just before the problem.

You cannot do the above and if you have another Windows 7 computer create a System Repair Disk. Boot and try a System Restore to a date just before the problem.

Hello,

I'm new to the forums, but I find myself coming to this site a lot to fix my windows computer, so heck why not join?!

Problem
Recently, my computer starts up windows and after the loading screen it just sits at a black screen forever with a cursor and it doesn't even make it to the log in screen. I have tried safe mode with the same results.

What I've Done So FarTried to Repair Startup with Windows DVD
Tried to use sfc /scannow at boot (Says pending changes and needs to restart)
Tried logging into my Ubuntu partition and virus scanning (None found)
Tried copying Reg Files from Regback into config while I was in Linux
Tried to bootrec /fixmbr /fixbot /RebuildBcd (Which destroyed my dual boot linux grub, but I was desperate. And still nothing) Interestingly though, after I do /RebuildBcd command it says something like "Found Windows Installations: 0"
Tried to System Restore (Gave me an Error, wouldn't you know)

At this point I'm not to confident that this can be fixed. If anyone has any ideas I'm willing to try. Or if you have any snazzy suggestions on how I could fix it using another computer, I have a different Windows Pro x64 computer that I can put the HD in if there's someway I can save my data/fix it/repair install from there. I just don't know how.

Edit: I finished the chkdsk and there were no bad sectors, though it did give me a message "Failed to transfer logged messages to... Read more

I've been getting these black screens at startups and the only thing I can do is move my cursor. It lasts for about 30 seconds then it loads normally. I've tried doing a system restore but it's still there and even reinstalling my drivers. I did a full Malwarebyte and Anti-virus scan and detected nothing. Please help. I'm thinking about reinstalling windows but that would have to be my last option.

A:Black screen with cursor at startup and before "Welcome" screen

Are you getting any BSOD's ?

Did you change anything to your system before this started to happen?

Drivers, Hardware, software?

Okay so I recently started up my computer and for some odd reason after the "welcome" screen I get the mouse cursor but no desktop. Even after waiting around for a few minutes, nothing came up. So I shut it down and started it in safe mode and it booted fine. Anybody know whats going on inside there? I really don't have the money to have a pro look at it even though that's the last line for me. Any help on this is GREATLY appreciated

A:Windows 7 gets a black screen with cursor, no desktop

Can you install and run a full scan with Malwarebytes, in Safe Mode if necesary?

If so and it cleans up infection but Win7 still won't start, try SFC /SCANNOW Command or if necessary from the Win7 disk or Repair CD use SFC /SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot.

If these fail then everything else that can be done is in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start

I turned on my computer tonight and before booting it started scrolling text saying deleting corrupted files and scanning files etc...this went on for at least 10-15 minutes and then when it was done it said "Starting Windows" like normal, then brought me to a black screen that said "Preparing to configure windows...do not turn off your computer". That message disappeared after a few seconds and left me with a black screen with a mouse cursor. In the bottom right hand corner of the screen is a power button, bottom left is ease of access button and bottom center it says Windows 7 Home Premium.

I can't do anything with this. I've restarted numerous times, and I've tried restarting in Safe Mode and it still brings me to this point every time. I've also tried using system restore and startup repair through the advanced settings from pressing F8 during boot up. Nothing fixes this.

How can I fix this?

PS. I did not upgrade my version of windows or anything...Windows did install some updates last time I turned off the computer I think.

I have a friend's machine that she has asked me to try and fix it is an Acer Z610 all in one touch screen.

She told me that when the machine was turned on (immediately before the problem) it was scrolling a message about replacing invalid security ID with default, that may not have been the whole message, unfortunately she didn't write it down.

The machine now boots through the bios screen and past the windows loading screen with the pulsating logo,  the screen then goes black with a white pointer and that's all, the same thing happens in safe mode.
I have booted to my Windows 7 Recovery disc, the memory scans OK, but the boot repair fails very quickly and system repair fails on all of the available restore points quoting a failure of some memory location.

Other than removing the HDD, using another machine to get her data off (she has made no backups despite my advice) and then re-installing windows, I can't think of my next step.

Can anyone offer me some help please?

Graham

When i start the system it goes through the normal setup until it gets to the windows startup screen it then goes to a Black screen with a mouse curser. I have no access to the system then. This also happens in safemode. Any help with this issue would be appreciated.

All I can think of right now is to make a system restore using the Windows 7 Disc, if you have one.

I was having problems with my charger for a couple of weeks. I bought some cheap online charger that provided my computer with the wrong wattage. Eventually my battery became ruined due to this, but I bought a new one. However, my computer kept shutting off due to the lack of power. So it would completely shut off. This may have done some hard drive damage I suspect, since I cannot boot into OS anymore. I have tried another HDD and it seemed to work.

I'm trying to resolve the problem with my hard drive though. I plugged it into my other computer via usb and it seems fine. I am able to grab any files I need from it. NOW as for my laptop, the PC turns on like normal. I get the bios screen. I get the Windows logo screen. Then I get a black screen with a mouse cursor in the middle.
I can move the mouse, but the buttons don't do anything--left or right click. No keys on the keyboard change the screen. Ctrl+Alt+Del does nothing. Windows key does nothing. Esc does nothing, etc. At this point the only option is to hold down the power button and turn it off.
What I've tried:
I tried to start it in safe mode, but the same thing happens. It shows the system files that are loading. The last file it shows loading is Windows/system32/DRIVERS/amdkmpfd.sys then it goes to a black screen with a mouse cursor again; only this time it is in safe mode resolution so the mouse cursor is larger and not as sharp. Also, no keyboard strokes have any affect just as with normal mode.

I've searched all over for solutions to this. Upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro from 8 through the Windows Store. Everything seemed to go smoothly. Updated graphics card drivers prior to install of 8.1. Now whenever I start up, I can log in, but then it goes to a black screen with a cursor. Ctrl-Alt-Del will bring up the task manager and from there I can access programs and get on the internet. So after maybe 5 minutes or so after opening a program (usually firefox) the Metro screen randomly loads. None of the store apps worked, though I was able to find a fix for that. Some of them still don't work right though. Am I better off just reinstalling 8 and waiting for them to fix it? Or is there a better way to upgrade from 8 other than through the store?

I have the same Video card as yours. You might want to re-install the Video driver from NVIDIA website but use the Custom Install instead. On the next screen. put a check mark on "Perform Clean Install".

In addition, make sure you have the latest BIOS installed from your MB manufacturer.

Good luck !!!

I have an Acer aspire 5733-6607 with Intel Core i3 CPU 2.40GHz.

My mom was on it playing a game on the internet and stepped away to wash dishes when she came back it was on the black screen with the blinking cursor in the top left corner. I tried system repair disc, the recovery disc that it had me make when I first got the laptop and windows defeender offline nothing worked. I tried F8 and it goes to the black screen with acer and where I can press F2 or F12 and then back to screen with blinking cursor. I tried restoring default settings in the F2 menu also.

I was wondering if there was something someone knew that maybe I overlooked any help will be really appreciated thanks..

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEB23FM and my issue is that my computer loads to a black screen with just the cursor. This first happened when I left my laptop on over night and I believe Windows did an automatic update and rebooted to the black screen. I have tried restoring to a point before the Windows update but I got an error:

System Restore failed to extract the file
(D:\Windows\assembly\GAC\Microsoft.DirectX.AudioVideoPlayback\1.0.2902.0__31b from the restore point.
An unspecified error occurred during system Restore. (0x80070003)

Clicking on the black screen with the mouse and pressing of any buttons does absolutely nothing so I can't open the task manager. Last Known Good Configuration brings me to the same screen. I have tried booting in to safe mode and reach the same black screen with the cursor. I have also tried enabling low resolution video which also brought me to the same screen.

I have tried to provide any useful information that I can think of. If I have left anything out that might help find a solution please let me know. Thank you for reading over this issue, any help will mean a lot to me.

I installed windows 10 on my HP laptop and it seemed to work okay for a few hours with a few shortcuts on the main screen missing. After I closed the lid, it went into sleep mode and has never recovered. I can power down by holding the power button, but
when I power up again, all I get is a black screen, with no mouse pointer. How can I get to safe mode, or get any screen function back so I can get rid of Windows 10 forever?

A friend asked me to see if I could get his computer running again, but I'm about ready to pull what's left of my hair out. Its an eMachines mini desktop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Windows will not boot to the desktop screen, only to a black screen and mouse cursor. Hitting F8 only gets you safe mode options, all of which stall the same way. There's no "Last Known Good Configuration" option either. Using a Windows 7 64-bit rescue disk doesn't help, because it doesn't find anything wrong when running the diagnostics, and there aren't any restore points to revert back to. I've already tried the bootrec.exe /fixmbr and /fixboot remedy, no change. The computer is used by their kids quite a bit so I'm wondering if it might be virus/malware/Trojan related? Thanks for your help.

A:Windows 7 boots to black screen w/cursor

Hi There:
Sorry to hear you are having problems with your friend's eMachines pc. They are fine computers.

Before you try any of my sugestions, IT IS CRITICAL THAT YOU BACKUP ALL OF YOUR FRIEND'S CRITICAL DATA! You should backup to an External Hard Drive, Flash Drive, or CD/DVD discs first!

With that said; here are the things you can try in this order:

1) Try to boot into the eMachines hidden Partition Recovery using F5, F7, F10, or F12 keys on power-up boot. You can download the eMachines User Manual from their website at: eMachines Support - Welcome to eMachines Support.

Once in that Recovery Menu, it will ask you what repair you want to try, and you want to restore the PC to Factory Condition, which is a DESTRUCTIVE operation and will destroy all of your friend's data and reinstall Win7 and all programs and settings that came with the computer when it was new out of the box right after your friend purchased it. This is why I had you backup your data first before you do this. **also, if you have never done this before, I suggest you take to a local computer expert or Certified Technician at your local computer store**.
THIS IS AN IRREVERSIBLE STEP!

After doing this, and you get the same Black Screen result, most likely your hard drive is damaged and possibly the Motherboard (Main Board) could also be damaged as well. Take to a local Certified Computer Expert at this point.

2.) Ask your friend for the Recovery Discs that came in the box when he/she purchased t... Read more

Hi,

I've been running Vista for a few months now without much complaint until recently. After booting, the green loading bar is followed by the windows logo before the screen flickers several dark colors and then produces a black screen with a movable cursor. The hard drive light remains unlit after the black screen. Running in safe mode gives the same result. I do not have a repair disk and I would rather not wipe the hard drive with a factory default disk as I have important data on my hard disk.

Im no Vista PRO, but the first thing i would do is:

Run Vista Startup Repair, that can be found in the tutorials.
(It is quite easy, just boot from the CD, and Repair it.)

If this doesnt work, try to boot in safe mode and then Backup your things.
(To run in Safe Mode, i use the method, turn on wait until the vista logo comes, then turn off by the button, so next time you boot, you can choose to Safe Mode)

Backup the computer by a External Drive. ( Don`t use DVDs, its a waste)

Hey.
I shut down my computer last night. It runs 8.1 and when I shut it down I do not believe it installed updates. I came home this afternoon and tried to boot it. It boots and after I type in my PIN, shows my desktop for a few seconds. Then, my display will either turn black or a blueish grey. There is no cursor. It does this every reboot now. I can not do anything except reset when it happens.

System info:
Two GTX 760's in SLI
Two Asus monitors

Possible culprits:
1 - I have Actual Multiple Monitors trial installed. The freezing/display blanking seems to happen when the trial time left window shows up, but that may be coincidence.
2 - I heard graphics card driver updates and windows updates can clash in some way and cause a similar issue. From what I've read, a cursor is still on screen and task manager can be opened with CTRL SHIFT ESC. Neither of these work for me.
3- Virus? I have avast so I doubt it.

Anyone got any clue what's wrong and how to fix it?

specs: Intel Core i5-4670K, Gigabyte GeForce GTX 760 (2-Way SLI), Corsair 400R - current - lillz's Saved Part List - PCPartPicker

With two large graphics cards, the size of the power supply is very important....what is the model number?

What configuration are you running the dual monitors in. Are they both running from one video card, and which ports?

Hi there, I really need help.
My laptop has been acting really weird the last couple of weeks. It would crash randomly, and sometimes when I picked it up to put it somewhere else, it crashed too.
Now, I thought this was a problem with Windows 8.1, because it didn't behave like this before with normal Windows 8. So I Refreshed my laptop, and after that it worked again, without crashing.
I left it in sleep mode while I got some sleep too, and when I booted it up this morning, it crashed again.
After that the whole laptop wouldn't boot up, and now the only thing that shows is a cursor on a black screen, and it seems to be stuck in sleep mode, because I can't even turn it off completely manually. So I can't access the BIOS or make it boot up in Safe Mode.
What the hell should I do??

Specs:

nVidia GeForce GT740M graphics card

Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

When booting my pc, it goes past the windows logo and just before the login screen appears, the screen goes black and all I see is my cursor, I can't move the cursor or do anything with the pc. The only solution that seems to be working is I have to boot from cd and reinstall windows 7. I really don't want to do this everytime I boot up my pc as the installation takes around 45mins. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys!
So like a lot of you, I wanted to upgrade my laptop to Windows 10. But when the laptop was in the middle of installing Windows 10 and had restarted a few times, as it does during the installation, it suddenly went black screen with NO cursor or anything. It has been like this for 2 days now, and I don't know what to do.
I can clearly see that the laptop is still on and "working", so it has not just shut down.
I'm afraid to force the laptop to turn off, because it's in the middle of a system upgrade. So I'm wondering if there are any alternative solutions or is my only option to force the laptop to shut down and then restart it and hope for the best?

After upgrading my Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro I have also been plagued with the black screen of death. After the BIOS screen it goes black and I do not even get a mouse cursor and I've also let it run for about 30 minutes just in case and nothing. I've tried a lot of the fixes that are being posted online:

-Subsequently uninstalled the display adapter driver
-Disabled fast startup
-Pulled out the battery
-Enabled F8 at startup
-Tried using an installation media DVD I made and that also gets stuck loading but with the blue Windows Logo.

Here is the kicker. I have a bootable USB that has Ultimate Boot CD on it with mini Windows XP. When I boot into mini Windows XP and click shutdown and select restart, Windows 10 then boots normally and will repeatedly boot normally as long as I don't eject that USB. Once I eject that USB I lose everything and I can't even get into Safe Mode. So I've gone back in to see what kind of display driver the mini Windows XP has but have had no luck in finding it. I did call Windows and they said my laptop (Lenovo ThinkPad E555) is compatible with Windows 10. Beyond that they were not helpful at all. Any help would be appreciated?

for some reason I can't even get into windows 7, after I get pass the screen that says "asus" , my laptop brand, It goes into a black screen with a blinking cursor in the left hand corner like this:

I'm unable to do anything at that point, it just blinks. I can't even boot into safe mode now, the only think I'm able to get into is the Bios Setup Utility menus and Asus' express gate, which is just a media/internet/gaming/skype thing that doesn't allow .exe files to run...

This came factory installed so I don't have a windows 7 disc to help run fixes or anything. please, someone, help.

A:Can't get into windows, black screen with blinking cursor

Hello grive and welcome to Seven Forums.

Have you tried booting into Advanced Boot Options? As soon as you start your machine click the F8 key (top row of keyboard) and keep clicking until you see the Advanced Boot Options screen. This tutorial has a bit more info.

From here you should be able to choose from several different options including Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, etc.

Depending on your specific computer you may also have a hidden recovery partition that can return your machine to factory specs (just like the day it was when you got it home.) On some laptops you can press F9 at start up and that should open the recovery process. I believe you get four different options:

1. If none of the following recovery options is selected, the computer will just be rebooted to load Windows (if Recovery is started from the hard drive) or run the bootable disc in the optical drive.

2. The first partition is deleted (the others remain intact) and a new system partition C: will be created.

3. This option removes all the partitions from the hard drive and creates a new system partition C:.

4.This option removes all the partitions from the hard drive and creates two new partitions C: (60% of the drive’s storage capacity) and D: (40%).

You might want to check your owners manual or quick start guide to see if it gives more info.

I cannot boot to windows 7. When I turn my computer on I get a single post beep. Then I get a black screen with a white courser on the top left screen. I have tried many things to troubleshoot this problem. I have removed all usb devices. I have removed each device inside the computer such as dvd and blu ray player. I have re seated the RAM and reset the cmos battery. I have used different sata cables to drives. I have also tried to boot to cdrom and try to recover windows using the windows 7 cd. After trying all this it still results in a black screen with a white courser.

I am running a Gigabyte 990xa-ud3 mobo
AMD FX 8150 8 core processor
4x4 16 gb corsair vengeance 1600 MHz RAM
Evga N560 GTX video card
lg blu ray player

Unfortunately I do not have many replacement parts to see if the hardware is the problem. I did try my old video card and that did nothing.
Thanks

Hello all,

I am in dire need of assistance and any help is most welcome. I am running a Sony Vaio with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.00 GHz processor and Windows XP SP3 Media Center 2005. The computer boots with the Windows splash / loading screen as normal, afterwards, when it would normally show the desktop, I am left with a black screen with the cursor in the middle (not blinking). I have control of the cursor, but can't do anything else. Ctrl+Alt+Del does nothing and pressing Shift 5 times does nothing. I have attempted the normal system restore, booting in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with networking, and Safe Mode with Command prompt. All of these result in the same black screen with cursor control.

I am not aware of any viruses that might be on the machine. I regularly run SuperAntispyware, Malwarebytes, and virus scans with Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition. None of them detected anything earlier in the day prior to the problem. However, Firefox had frozen up an unusual number of times yesterday. When it froze, I noticed that there was always an advertisement on the site that didn't load properly, so I attributed it to that. Also, the night before, I received a Cicerouiwndframe not responding error on shutdown, but that is not particularly unusual as I have seen it before, though not recently. Further, I noticed yesterday that my computer was having trouble recognizing my printer in one of the USB ports, but when I switched to one of the other ports, it worked fine. In trying t... It's possible that an application is attempting to load at start up that cannot complete and keeps the computer from finishing it's boot up. Another user profile might not have this same issue.

Hi, I have a desktop computer with windows 7 (Inspiron 545).

When I turn it on the logo of windows loading appears normally but after it I only get a black desktop with a big white cursor (low resolution?) but there is nothing else there, no icons, no task bar, etc. just emptiness. I wish I could give out more details but there is nothing more I can do. I tried with F8 to load recovery and do a factory re-install but the option is not there, even though I know the hard drive has a partition for it, the only thing that it's there is check for errors (or fix errors) but that didn't help. I would do a full format and re-install the operative system but I don't have the original dvd.

Thanks!

Hi all,

I was wondering if someone is able to help me try to solve an issue with my laptop. I have a HP laptop running windows 7, and at the moment, I can't get it to start up. It gets past the screen with the windows logo and then just displays a black screen with white cursor. I don't remember recently having installed any updates or any other software which may have caused this. I did, however, go away for the weekend and accidentally left my laptop on standby. When I came home, the battery had drained, so I tried starting it back up and it loaded the 'windows shut down incorrectly' screen. Trying to start windows normally after seeing that screen now won't work. I've tried a few basic fixes:

1. Starting in safe mode - also loads black screen with white cursor
2. Letting the black screen load and pressing ctrl+alt+delete - task manager doesn't start
3. Going to advanced boot options and enabling low resolution video mode
4. System restore - tried restoring to 2 points, one 2 weeks ago, another even older. Both try the restore and then I get an unspecified error (0x8000ffff)
5. A hard reset
6. Pressing F8 on startup and selecting 'restore to last known configuration'.

Any ideas for for what I can try next? The laptop is fairly old but it's the files on it I really care about, so would like to try to fix it, or otherwise, recover my files before doing a clean install.

My laptop came with windows 7 preinstalled on it, but I burnt a series of recove... Read more

A few nights ago I came home to my Win 7 64 bit desktop frozen in a busy state. Windows was running, but the cursor was indicating busy and the computer was locked up. After 10 minutes of waiting for it to respond (hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del or Ctrl+Shift+Del had no response), I did a hard reboot (held down power button until the computer restarted). When the computer booted back up - I saw a "Resuming Windows" screen rather than "Starting Windows." Windows did load, and while everything appeared to run fine (Start menu would open and cursor was okay), no programs would open after clicking on them, and task manager would not appear. Fed up, I did another hard reboot. This time, Windows did not boot. The Windows 7 logo appears, gets very dim, and after a while a 0xed (Unmountable boot volume) BSOD appears and the computer restarts.

The fun really begins when trying to launch Windows Setup, any of the three safe modes, or last known good configuration. In the safe mode scenarios, safe mode never loads (gets hung up while loading drivers). For last known good configuration, I get the same BSOD. The really interesting part is Windows Setup. Windows setup loads (you see the loading bar), and then goes to a black screen. After a while (15-60 minutes), a cursor appears on the screen. You can move the cursor around - but that's it. Ctrl+Alt+Del has no effect. I've left the computer on for 24+ hours at this point - nothing else happens. I have a separate Windows... Read more
