I'm currently in the process of copying files back from the cloud in the exact same location where I had them before and now it says that the file name is too long and prompts to see whether I want to skip the file or not. The error message given does not
give the full file name or the path so it is impossible to see which files were copied successfully or not. This never happened with XP! Then afterwards I found that some of the files with long names did copy successfully whereas others didn't. I find this
to be a very user unfriendly process and I'm totally confused! These are critical files and I'm sure I haven't exceeded 260 characters or whatever. This is soOoO frustrating!!

A:file copy error message not sufficient + file name too long will not copy

Hi ,

There is a limit of filename length within Windows Explorer. In the Windows API (with some exceptions discussed in the following paragraphs), the maximum length for a path is MAX_PATH, which
is defined as 260 characters.
The shell and the file system have different requirements. It is possible to create a path with the Windows API that the shell user interface is not able to interpret properly.
This means that your long filename can only be handled at the command prompt level and you cannot drag and drop an illegal length filename within Windows Explorer.

Please simplify your folders and titles.

More information, please check the part of Maximum Path Length Limitation in the link below. Cai

I'm trying to copy a VHD (22g, dynamic I think...)

I tried richcopy. It says copy started, but then stops....

I saw someone mention xcopy /j, to achieve the unbuffered I/O perf. you get with richcopy...

it's running, but no indication as to how long it takes (EDIT: just finished, > 10 mins),

what's the syntax for single files?

Can't you just paste the path into the source?

(starts, and stops... any logs?)

A:how do I copy a BIG single file (using richcopy?) big file copy

Use this command if the VHD is sitting on C:

robocopy "C:\Users\yourName\VHD Folder" "S:\Storage Folder" *.* /COPY:DAT /E

Change yourname and replace VHD Folder with the name of the folder where the VHD resides. S:\Storage Folder is where you want to store it.

I'm in the process of repair/recovery of my machine (Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2). I'm following exactly the instructions in:, but a problem has developed. The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed, no? Or is there a way out somehow?

Thanks to anyone who's been there and can help...

BTW I have the XP installation disk that came with, and a diagnostics disk which I have not yet run.

A:Blue Screen: Registry File Failure; can't copy corrupted file to tmp directory

Never mind, I had it wrong--didn't read the document referred to above carefully enough. The procedure worked like a charm, and the document is very easy to read and entertaining to boot! (pun intended).

The document describes a procedure that closely follows a Microsoft KB document (which I now can't find) but does not contain any warning regarding whether the OS is an OEM (original equipment manufacture) install or not. The Microsoft doc says not to use the procedure on an OEM-installed OS, but I just did it on my Dell, so that warning seems to be incorrect.

Many many thanks for the help provided by this document and this site.

I cannot copy or paste jpeg files from my computer to my SD 2GB cards. Also, I get this msg when I try to print jpeg files. Using Adobe Elements I am able to archive these files. Oddly enough I can attach and send these jpeg files via email. Prior to August '08 was able to do these tasks without a problem. I suspect that there is a software compatibility problem since this problem came on suddenly (maybe iTunes?). No problems importing jpeg files from SD cards. I've looked at several sites on the internet but none seem to have the right solution for my problem. THANKS for any help that you can provide! -Stu

A:Error copying file or folder; cannot copy img the directory or file cannot be created

This has caught me more than once.

The problem is a limitation on the number of files and folders allowed in the root folder of a FAT16 file system (as for a memory card) of 512. (Note, this number is reduced much further if longer file names than 8 characters are used, as most people will want to).

When transferring the files onto the card, new files will be rejected when you hit this limit.

So keep your files in separate folders, so they are not all in the root folder.

For files and folders in root it might be worth keeping your filenames under 8 characters in length so you can use the full 512 files on root folder.

I would like to create a .bat to copy files from source folder to destination folder.
Some files in source folder already exist in destination folder (Same name)
What I would like is that files existing in destination folder to be rename to f.eks filename_BAK.extension.
Source folder include. FileOne.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt
Destination folder include. FileOne.asp - (NO FileTwo) - FileTree.txt
Result. FileOne.asp (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileOne_BAK.asp) - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileTree_BAK.txt)
Now in desination folder.: FileOne.asp - FileOne_BAK.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt - FileTree_BAK.txt
Files in source folder are placed in different folders, but in same structure in destination.

I have Windows XP-Pro SP2 installed on a P4 1.8GHz CPU with 768MB RAM

I would like a script that opens a commamd window and calls for a file (icon file) to be copied to a specific folder on 5 different drives. I would like to be able to either paste in the file path or drag and drop the file onto the command window. The icon file will always come from the same folder "C:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders" and be copied, sometimes replacing a file with the same name, to these 5 folders:

"W:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"X:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"W:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"N:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"D:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

I apologize if I am using incorrect terms. I don't know if a batch file could do this or if it would have to be done with vbs. I would appreciate the help. I know nothing about writng vbs script and only a little about writing batch files.

Hi All
I have a rather large file system with lots of folders & subfolders. When I want to save previously on Xp operating system I'd search in explorer open the folder I want then copy the address (e.g c:\customer records\client name\job address).

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

When I use the XCopy command in Windows 2000, I can copy any file I like; however, when I use copy-and-paste or drag-and-drop in either Windows Explorer or PowerDesk, I get the following error:

Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read from the Source File or Disk

I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and came up with only one article, Q224378. This article seems not to apply to my situation because it applies to Windows 2000 Server. I am running Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2. I did attempt to install the fix that article Q224378 suggested anyway; but, I got an error message that I was attempting to upgrade a program that didn't exist on my system.

I have also learned that this error applies when copying from either of my SCSI CD-ROM drives, not when copying from hard disks or floppies.

Any Suggestions?

• I have a network directory that stores photos of individuals in jpg format. There may be only 2 pics of each person, or there may be 7 pics.
• Each persons pics are stored in a randomly named directory / subdirectory. dont have any control over the original program, it's just the way it was written, does not seem to follow any logical pattern, possibly a HEX naming structure based off the date & time, who knows (I will include a sample directory tree at the end of the post).
• Included within each of these created directories, along with the pictures, is a standard text file (filename "B.TXT") which includes the date the picture was taken, the persons name, and other information.
• Each time a person comes in and their picture is taken, the program: (i) creates the random directory (ii) stores the pics (iii) creates the "B.TXT" file with the persons information (iv) generates several other program specific files that I have no need for.
• The program names each of the pictures with the exact same names, which is why they are stored in different directories, so they will not overwrite. The retention period on each individuals directory, pics and files is approximately 40 days.

I have the game 'Crysis' on two backup DVD's. I had to put the installation files in a .rar and split them so I could back it up (I downloaded the game digitally from EA)

So when I insert disk 1 and try to copy 'Crysis.part1.rar' to D:/Crysis (D: is my data drive, C: is strictly the OS and maybe 2 or 3 applications installed on it) it copies most of it, but when it gets to '5 seconds remaining' it comes up with this error. It takes like 6 minutes to copy it and then it errors out when it's almost done! I've tried 3 times and the error popped up every time. The disk is spotless... I mean it looks brand new. Not even a speck of dust or any smudges at all.

Why am I getting this error?? I don't know what to do! If I can't copy it I'll have to redownload the entire 6gb installation package from EA, which will take probably 4-5 hours.

Please help!

Name: Crysis.part1.rar
Size: 4.37gb (4,588,544KB)

I'm currently using Richcopy to move about 4TB worth of data from our colo facility (1000 miles away) to our office. And that data also gets routed overseas first before coming back (don't ask). Needless to say, connectivity while not bad, could be better.

The small files are zooming right along, the issue is the larger files (the ones that are hundreds of MB or even several GB).

From time to time, I briefly lose network connectivity for a second or two, when that happens, the files currently being copied abort and once connectivity is restored, Richcopy just moves on to the next files. So when Richcopy advertises that it 'resumes', it seems it is talking about resuming a file copy queue, and not resuming partially copied files. Those have to start over from the beginning.

Is there a tool similar to Richcopy with the functionality I'm looking for?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site, I have a problem and I hope you guys can help me out.

I usually backup my weeks work on Friday afternoons. What I do is run a "search" for all files created or modified within the last 7 days and then "copy" all relevant files to a folder on an external hard drive, and then burn a CD.

Everynow and then, I get the following message. "Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read From the Source File or Disk"

Do you guys know why this happens? There are no problems with me copying and dragging files individually over to the new folder, but the problem arises when i copy a bunch over.

Last night, I ended dragging my entire work folder (21GBs) onto the external hard drive. It took a few hours, but it worked.

This morning, I was able to run a search for all documents and files that were created or modified over the past week. But when I tried to copy only those files to a separate folder I again ran into this error message.

Does anybody out there know what's going on? Or better yet, does anyone out there have a better way of backing your week's work?

Thomas Lee

Microsoft Word (for example) locks current temporary files (in your C:\Documents & Settings\{your username}\Local Settings\Temp file and may not allow you to copy them.

When "Copy", "Move", or "Delete" runs across these files, it quits the operation.

Other programs may have "locked files" in other locations.

If you are on XP and if you want a simple backup, use Windows' NTBACKUP. Just go to your START menu, choose RUN and type in NTBACKUP. Be sure to look at the "options" settings.

It provides for full backups; differential backups (all files changed since last full backup); incremental backups(all files changed since your last incremental backup) and for copy (just a copy - doesn't set archive bits.

I'm sure others will reply with comments of their favorite backup programs.

When I try to copy the folder, the copying starts but a second or two later I get a message "Error Copying File or Folder---Cannot Copy File".

A Lexar technician went through various operations and tests (including reformatting) with me and his conclusion is that one or more of the files is/are corrupted. (We tried to copy the folder to my C drive and got the same error message.)

There are a lot of sub-folders and I suppose I could go through one by one and find which ones won't copy but is there a simpler way of locating the file(s) that are corrupted and correcting them?

Thanks so much!

A:Cannot copy file

Well, I don't know about a "much simpler way", but you don't have to go thru one by one. Basically, you can select half of the folders >copy and paste > if it goes thru fine, then it's not in that half.

So you're left with the "other" half, just select half of that...well, you get the picture.

That's basically what I did when I was trying to locate a corrupted video file. It didn't take too long.

I have just bought a new keyboard (Saitek Eclipse), and very nice it is too, but I cannot get it to work, since Device Manager tells me I need a copy of kbdhid.sys. I know this can be found on XP SP2, but I don't have a hard copy of this, since I downloaded SP2 from Windows Update, originally.

Does anyone know where I can download a copy of this file for free, please?

Any help most gratefully received, coz I am sitting here looking at noo keyboard and I can't damned well use it!!

Many thanks!

Do you still have the SP2 install file that you downloaded?
You can extract all of the files in the service pack using something like WinRAR.

I have run into a few files lately that just won't move
from one place to another. It doesnt matter wether its from one drive to another, NTFS to fat32 or the other way
around, from usb to ide, ide to usb, etc, it just won't
allow the file to be copied. Makes me wonder how I got the file in the first place. I tried zipping the file using
winrar and that failed. I'm running win xp pro with sp1.
I also tried closing zone alarm and my avirus prog, still
no go.

Can anyone help me with info on how to move this file?
Not only that but i find its always a problem when moving a bunch of progs\files from one place to another. One or 2 files wont copy over. Sometimes a reboot will fix the problem, other times it won't.

I always check and make sure the files aren't "read only" so that isn't the issue. I am really getting frustrated with this problem and would appreciate any help.

Thank you

i think my windows and hdd are going to crash soon. i want to back up my files. but i could not. i could not copy the files as they are taking a awful lot of time. and sometimes it just stops copying and my pc freezes. what can i do?
I am using windows 7.

A:cannot copy file

Go here to download Ubuntu 10.04 ( There is a newer version, but I am going by my existing setup, so follow along and choose 10.04 ) Save the iso file.

Then download ImgBurn from here:

Install ImgBurn and run it.

Choose "Write Image to Disc"

At the top of the Imgburn window, where it says "Source" click on the folder with maginfying glass icon; Then navigate to where you saved the ISO file.

Then click on the bottom area of the window depicting hd write to CD.

That should create the CD.

Now you want to boot with the CD on your PC. Check your BIOS so that it chooses to boot using the CD first. You are looking for the Boot menu, boot priority, or something along that line.

Once you boot into Ubuntu, pull down the Places pull down menu. Choose the ## GB Filesystem. That would be your hard drive. You will be able to see all folders in your drive. Now copy off the files you want to a USB memory stick.

even though i only selected the .qbw the operation resulted in 2 files being copied, the .qbw i selected and a .qbw.nd
the .qbw.nd is self described as a 'quickbooks configuration' file.
i was just wondering how this happens? from somewhere, somehow, the copy utility knows that when copying file 'x' to also copy file 'y'
is this a windows feature or somehow done by intuit?

I have a backup script I created using Robocopy to always keep a fresh backup of some of my most important data but just noticed one of my files fails to be copied to my backup disk.

The file in question is a executable file called LTL.exe and is a small utility that is part of a scenery add-on product for Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

I've also tried copy this file manually in Explorer by right-clicking the file and then choosing Copy-Paste and although I don't get any error message doing this and the copy process seems to be successful the file never ends up at the destination.

I'm running Win 7 x64 Ultimate and I have UAC disabled (not that it should be important since I'm not trying to copy the file into a system folder) and I'm local administrator on my PC. I've also tried taking ownership of this specific file and double and triple-checking I have full control for this specific file looking at the security tab.

If I launch the file in it's original location the utility starts up just fine so the file doesn't seem to be corrupt.

I've also scanned both this file and my complete PC for viruses both using Avast! and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and all is good...not a trace of any viruses.

Many thanks in advance for what could cause this, never seen this before!!

Editied to add I did another test, tried copying the file within the same physical disk and that went fine so that makes me wonder if I'm facing some weird kind of copy protection here not allowing me to cop... Read more

Right click on the image and do a "save as" to your hard disk. You can import that image into Word.

The only thing I can think of is permissions. Are you trying to do this from an admin account and do you have any security software that might be blocking system folders from access?

Also, can you copy it off the floppy somewhere else first like your documents, and then try moving it to System32?

I have data from an accounting program that I back up from 1 QNAP NAS to a Buffalo NAS every day. The files total 167MB.

If I use a Windows XP computer on the network (24 port Gigabit switch ) all computer have Gigabit, the copying will be finished in about 2 minutes.

If I use Windows XP mode on a Win 7 machine the same copy takes about the same time.

If I use Win 7, it will take about 2 - 3 mins to calculate the copy and then about 2 mins to do the copy.

Is there some way to make Win 7 behave the same way as Win XP and do the copying without the calculating.

If this topic has already been covered, can some kind soul please direct me to the correct thread.

I like Windows 7 in all respects, but it seems to be very slow in network file copying compared to XP or other previous versions of Windows.

Hello ThunderRoad, and welcome to Eight Forums.

See if this may help for the computer you are copying to.

Add the Public folder to each library. For example, the "C:\Users\Public\Public Videos" to the Videos library.Make the added public Videos folder the default public save location for the Videos library.

Library - Add a Folder to in Windows 8

Library - Set Default & Public Save Locations in Windows 8

Afterwards, see if you are able to copy the folder over.

I noticed ages ago that my quicktime facility had GONE. Despite numerous attempts this cannot be rectified it's not unique to quicktime either while attempting to upgrade my media player from 8 to 10 partway through the installation an error box tells me that it cant find qasf.dll in the local/ixp etc folder so i locate one online and after downloading "Cannot copy file etc..."

This does not affect all downloads tho and perhaps completely unrelated {but you never know} certain websites won't appear like just a blank screen, with my status bar reading DONE.

I've got a user who connecting to a Windows 2003 Terminal Server. He has permission to write to all the directories in a tree on the d: drive. He is trying to copy a .ini file to another directory in the same tree but is unable to.

This is most puzzling because he can write to the directories, he can copy another file or copy the blah.ini file to another name in the target directory.

From cmd, he is doing

copy blah.ini ..\
access is denied
0 files copied
It seems ridiculously simple, but I can't see any reason why the thing shouldn't work, the user has write permissions to the directory above and can do the following successfully
copy blah.ini ..\blah.txt
So it seems that this is isolated to the .ini extension and not a permissions issue.

So is there some security measure that stops an ordinary user from working with .ini files? Or is it something specific to Terminal Server 2003?

The only thing that moves is the mouse, the rest of the programs come up with 'Not Responding' and CTRL+ALT+DEL does not work. I want to have some redundancy for our backup. At the moment our Windows Server 2003 system is being backupped by NT backup, it stores the backup on a different computer (through a UNC pad).

The system the backup is being stored on, is a Windows XP Pro (SP3) Machine.

Problem is I want to copy the newest BKF file to a external harddisk on a daily basis. I have found a script for this:
@echo off
setLocal EnableDelayedExpansion

pushd "E:\TGI-Backup\Backup Files"

for /f "tokens=* delims= " %%a in ('dir/b/od') do (
set newest=%%a
copy !newest! J:\Test
tested the script with a startfolder C:\Start and a Finish folder of C:\Finish and put several txt files in there. When I run this script the newest txt file was copied from c:\start to c:\finish.

Problem is the line: "E:\TGI-Backup\Backup Files" is not recognized. This has to do with the Space in the folder "Backup Files". Adding or removing the " characters around a pad does not work as well.

The server is configured to store the backup in \\JESUS\TGI-Backup (local foldername E:\TGI-Backup). But is automaticly adds the folder "Backup Files" and stores the BKF files in there
-Is there any way to get the pushd command to recognize folder/file names with spaces?

-can I let NT backup store the backup in a folder without the subfolder "Backup Files"?

Tnx in advance,

as you can see by the headline, i am having trouble with copying files to my mp3 player. I have done a search on this forum and found that someone last year had the same problem, but the problem wasn't solved for that person, so i thought to start a new thread.

My problem started a couple of days ago, up until then everything was fine, i could copy files to my mp3 player with no problems, sometimes i would've got the messge 'Are you sure you want to copy this file without it's properties?', i'd press yes and it would copy the files ok. But now the same message comes up, and it doesnt copy the properties. I actually tried playing my mp3 player and it crashes (restarts), until i remove the file that doesnt have the properties. I know my drive is supposed to support NTFS, my mp3 player is fat32 format and it did copy files for me up until a few days ago.

Could you please help

Hey hey, this is my first post on this forum, so Hello.

I'm after a bit of help. My friend's laptop has a problem; Vista loads up, but gets stuck with an error message "Interactive logon process initialization has failed".

I've googled for a fix to this problem, and have had some success. I made a bootable Vista restore disc on a USB stick and have copied C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs\Application.evtx to view on my own laptop. I've identified a manifest file that I think I can just write over with a working version of, but I'm on Windows 7 on my laptop, so haven't got a copy of the right manifest file.

What's the best way of getting it?

The file I need is C:\Windows\WinSxS\manifests\

I would be happy for someone to email a copy of this file over to me. Seems like the quickest solution (?)

Hello everyone here on this lovely forum

I have some questions I really hope you can help me with.

Create (save as) an file (A = 10.10.2015)
Makes changes (save) to the file (B = 20.10.2015)
Copy the file from 20.10.2015 to another harddrive (C = 30.10.2015)

What happens to the original file (A) when I make changes to it and ?save? the changes (B)? Will the original file from 10.10.2015 be deleted or is it saved somewhere else on the computer?

Is there any connection between the file first made 10.10.2015, and the new file that is created with ?copy? (30.10.2015)? There is only a connection between B (20.10.2015) - C (30.10.2015)?

Is there any info on the copied file to the hardrive, about the first file (10.10.2015)? No data, not even a the date (the date is 10.10.2015)?

Should I perceive it this way: When you ?copy? a file to a new hardrive, the copied file ONLY contain the changes last made and the date it was last changed, and there is no connection to the original version when the file was CREATED?

Best regards

A:What happens to a file when you 'save' and 'copy'?

When you save a file. The original is changed and cannot be found again.
When you save as, you have two files the original and the copy.

Greetings all,
I'm sure there is a very good ( and most likely simple explanation for this ) but just want to find out for sure what that might be.

I've recently put together a movie on my computer - its taken quite a bit of time and the resulting file once complete is in excess of 2gb.

I was ready to burn this to a DVD when i realised i had no blanks left.

To free up the space, and ultimately to make the file portable, i tried to transfer it to my external hard disc but am warned that there is not enough free disc space in spite of the fact that there is over 8 gb free on the laptop itself, and over 150 on the external disc.

Can anybody explain this ?? maybe offer a solution ??

Many Thanks

A:Cannot Copy File To External Hd

When you go to my computer, right click on the external harddrive and select properties. if the piechart is all blue, then thats your problem, try doing a disk cleanup and a defrag, if that doesn't work, try downloading this program to see what is taking up the space, it could be an invisible file.

Hope this helps

First job was to copy over large norton ghost files from each computer. From the pc it was ok, but when I try on the laptop I get a message something like this: "cannot copy ghost041106, not enough space. Free free some space then try again." There is definitely enough space.

At first I though it might be something to do with sharing, so I unticked the share drive option. I then disconnected the hd and physically attached to laptop. I can copy big files FROM the external hd, but it still won't let me copy the big ghost file TO it. But a smaller file of 1.2 gigs copies across just fine.

I notice it's formatted as FAT 32 - could this be the problem?

Both pcs running xp. Both newish and have enough power/juice/memory etc.

Any ideas on how I can solve this issue?

Many thanks,

I am trying to copy a customers favorites folder and the outlook.pst file from a laptop hard drive to my jump drive on my Vista system. This should take two seconds! Nope!

Vista always says you do not have permission to copy this file.
Even when I have granted permission and while using the real administrator accout with UAC turned off.
I tried it on my XP system and it does the same thing

This is not only annoying, it wastes an incredible ammount of time!!
Is there a way to completely disable permissions so that I can simply copy a file and a folder?
I have tried solutions found on the net to no avail

Will I run into the same nonsense when I attempt to copy these items back onto her new laptop?

Is outlook currently opened when performing this?

Have you tried the import/export function of Outlook via File Menu options.

i transferred 1GB from a USB drive to internal SATA drive last night. (it was nice to see that Microsoft is finally saving the error messages until the very end so as not to disrupt the 9 hour transfer (it's about time they did that)).however, the error messages i did get were typical of windows - very frustrating after 9 hours!: "file name is too long... cannot copy file. Cancel or Skip?"plus the "do this for all 479 problems?" check here's my beef / questions:1. If the file name is too long how was i able to create it in Windows Explorer in the first place? (the file was created on a 2TB Seagate SATA drive originally, running Windows XP (then mirrored onto a 2TB USB drive, and now copied to a new Seagate 2TB drive))2. the error messages i got on vista were in fixed windows (could not increase size) and the file name was truncated with the three dots. how am i suppose to fix the problem if I'm not given the file name?3. i had 479 of these errors. did you expect me to write down all 479 partial file names and go hunting this morning?! i know Microsoft doesn't like error logs, but is there one in this case somewhere?4. whats with this file name size limitation in the first place? 4BG of memory, 64bit technology, buses out the ass, etc and we still can't handle long file names if needed?5. is this the same in Windows 7? (or did i miss the "this is my windows and its so beautiful i make passion with it ever... Read more

A:...cannot copy...file name too long...

Thats better than the way some older systems would handle it. I tried burning a disc with Nero, and instead of giving me options, it just truncated each file name, resulting in a garbage disc.

I am trying to copy files from a source directory to an output directory when the output directory already has a file with the following:

I already have the following:
findstr /s /i /m "\<../reusable_components\>" *.xml > results.txt
This will return a list of filenames with the text in it.

Now I want to parse the list of files and take out the filename after ../reusable_components. I tried:
for /f %%a in ('findstr /s /i /m "\<../reusable_components\>" *.xml') do (echo %%a)
but that didn't work any ideas?

Hi all

I am not the most computer savy, so would appreciate replies in layman's terms!

I am trying to copy my iTunes music files and photos from my (Vista) laptop onto an external hard drive in order to transfer to my new Mac. The majority of these files copied no problem, but about 50 or so come up with the error message 'do you want to copy this file without it's properties.' I have looked in the properties and it's marked 'read-only.' I have tried to change this and apply (it looks as though it's doing it) but then when I go back into the properties, it's reverted back to 'read-only.'

I have tried altering permissions and ownership of the files so that I should in theory have complete control over these files. Still says 'read-only' and still can't copy the files.

I have turned off UAC - same problem.

I have tried removing the 'read-only' attributes as per this article:

You cannot view or change the Read-only or the System attributes of folders in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

And it comes up with 'paramater format not correct -'

I have been to various forums and seen others with the same problem and yet nobody seems to have an answer which works for me.

I have ran out of ideas, and because I am not technically enough minded, I cannot even think of what else to try. All I want to do is have all of my media transferred onto my Mac so I can change OS on my laptop as I do not enjoy working with Vista.

Please can som... Read more

Hi, well, rather than solving the problem from within Vista itself, use a bootable CD to boot from- a basic Windows environment.

Boot from the CD (you need to make sure your BIOS setting prioritises your CD/DVD drive before your hard drive); respond to the boot message sthg like "Press any key to boot from your CD", wait for it to load up a basic OS.
(See e.g. How to boot from a CD for a fuller example)

That should allow you to access the disk on your PC and the device you wish to copy to, and so copy the file. There are many of these around... either free to download (Hiren's Boot CD, Ultimate Boot CD for example), or supplied with programs like partition managers or disk imaging programs. Good luck!

I have this problem on Vista 64 edition. We have a html file ( index.html ) that is under the root of our IIS web server.

When I edit this index.html file ( in Notepad++ ) I make changes to the file, save and everything looks fine. But when I browse to http://localhost/index.html I'm not seeing the changes that I have made in the file.

So I check the file again, its as I saved it, with my changes correctly. So I made a copy of it ( copy + paste simple ) then I open the copied file ( Copy of index.html ) and it DOESN'T have my changes.

I originally thought it must be a problem with IIS caching the page, but after coping and pasting in the file system and then having 2 files, that have different contents I now think that it must be either an OS error, or a problem maybe with Notepad++.

Does anyone have any ideas? Or experienced this problem before?

A:File copy problem!?

No one has any ideas on this problem. It's very annoying as it basically means I can't edit my file.

Here is a problem I have never seen in any forum and it just started tonight on my computer.

I can not copy a file from one hard drive to another. I am trying to copy a file from my drive D:\ to my system drive C:\.

I get an Error(5) access denied:
It gives me the choices to Retry, Skip, or Skip all.
I can copy files from folder to folder on the same drive. Like I said this just started since I booted about an hour ago. Never had this problem before. Any ideas?
