hp pavilion won't switch on.

Q: hp pavilion won't switch on.

My hp pavilion recently updated itself to Windows 10. Since the update i have been unable to switch it on whether plugged in to a power source or not. While plugged in to a power source it sometimes illuminates the orange charge light, sometimes it flashes when i press the power button and sometimes it does nothing at all. This pavilion is only 6 months old and used infrequently.

Ttaylor2711 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!Since this is a relatively new machine, instead of struggling for hours to fix it yourself, why not just let HP fix it -- for free!! While this PC is still under warranty, you should contact HP Customer Support directly to have them put you in touch with HP Technical Support to see what they can do about diagnosing and repairing your machine remotely.I did this recently and the HP Tech was able to remotely access my PC from the Internet and do the needed repairs. If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while!Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

I bought my Pavilion dv6 laptop from HP in 2012 without the Blu-Ray option?  Can I switch out the dvd for blu-ray now?  If so, how do I go about it?

A:can I switch dvd for blu ray player in my pavilion dv6 (2012...

I will be needing the exact model number to find precisely the correct part but it is a piece of cake. Flip the laptop onto its back and there is a single screw either accessible directly on the bottom or inside the service bay. Remove the screw and the DVD drive slides out and you can purchase a Blu-Ray reader and DVD burner combo drive on eBay or and slide that into its place, replace the screw and you are ready to go. You will need a Media Player which allows Blu-Ray playback if you want to watch movies. The price of all optical drives has come way down in the last couple years. 2 years ago a Blu-Ray drive would have cost over $100US but now it is likely to be $50 or under.  You can also rebuild your drive module using a generic Blu-Ray drive and swap over the mounting hardware and faceplate but there is just not much to be saved that way any more as the price of the full drives with all hardware and plastics has come so far down.  I will say that if you have a standard resolution laptop screen like 1366 x 768, the difference between a movie on a DVD and a Blu-Ray is hard to tell. Blu-Ray is noticeably superior at full HD 1920 x 1080.  Tutorial on finding exact model number:

When the WiFi button (F12) is pressed the LED show red and a message on-screen briefly says "Flight Mode ON" and the network connection icon in the notification area shows a red X. - this is expected - however When I press F12 the on screen message does breifly display "Flight Mode OFF", but the LED stays orange and WiFi is disbaled. If I click the network icon in the notification area the panel that appears says Flight Mode OFF, WiFi (OFF). I simply cannot re-enable the WiFi with the F12 key. If I go to Computer->Properties->Device Manager, select the Wireless Adapter I can switch the WiFi back on by going to the Advanced tab and selecting Radio->Enable. If I do this the let then goes white and WiFi is OK. So what is going on - why can't I simply toggle the WiFi off and on with the F12 key. Why to I have to resort to the device manager to switch it back on again?

A:New HP Pavilion G6 - F12 switches OFF WiFi but won't switch ...

Solved my own problem - if it help others ....the WiFi Driver update dated 25/09/12 caused the problem in my case.Right click on 'Computer' select 'Advanced' and open Device manager. Locate the WiFi Adapter and choose the 'Roll back driver option' to restore the previous driver - worked for me. You think someone would test drivers better than this !!!

Hi I have an   HP Pavilion G6 2210sa withan Intel Centrino Wireless N 1030 wifi card,  runing Windows 10 x64 fresh installation Bios Version F.26 I am having issues with wireless connectivity. In device manager there are no error symbols. I can connect via ethernet with no problem. When I go into the bios F.26 and reset to default settings and start windows 10, The adapter functions fine and i'm able to connect to wireless networks. Upon restarting the laptop I'm faced with the original issue the f12 key changes to orange, and stays orange toggling from airplane mode to wifi mode. Windows trouble shooting suggests that the wireless capability is turned off. It suggests to turn the wireless capability back on using the function keys (F12). I do this and cannot connection to any wireless networks. I have prevented the computer turning off the wifi adapter power in device manager. Please could you suggest a solution?? Many Thanks in advance

Still nothing.  My laptop is one of the B&O line with a non-removable battery. Do I need to claim on the warranty and replace or is there an easy fix? ThanksWill

I just reinstalled my computer with windows 7 64bit and I have HP pavilion dv7 6050ec with two graphic cards : mobility radeon HD 6770M and a generic Intel HD Graphics Family. Since I reinstalled the computer, I no longer have to option to chose what graphic card I want to use. Before this reinstallation I could just right click on the desktop and there was a option that said Switch Graphical units, but now there is nothing like that. And I have the latest drivers for both graphic cards and latest Catalyst Control Center and Direct X installed. And in device manager all drivers are installed correctly. So I have no idea what to do.
Please help

Have you looked in BIOS to disable the onboard video? I don't know where that option came from, I confess that I've never seen it. Otherwise, you could try and disable the onboard video in the device manager.

I have Windows 7 Professional on my PC. In the first load I had, the PC should automatically detect if the LAN cable was plugged in, turn off the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable was now in use.
Unfortunately, I had to reload my PC, and since then I can't get it to do it again.
So, what I'd like to achieve is this: Have Windows automatically detect when the cable is plugged in, turn of the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable is in use - and, obviously, vice versa.
Can someone tell me what I need to do, please?

A:Have Windows 7 automatically switch to LAN when cable is plugged in and switch to wireless when it's removed

There are two methods can help you.
1. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings> and right click your wired and wireless adapters one at a time to change the properties. Select IPv4, click <Properties>
then click <Advanced>. For each one, clear the "Automatic metric" check box and assign the metric value manually. Setting your wired adapter?s metric value lower than wireless adapter one, such as ?1? for wired adapter and ?2? for wired adapter.

2. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings>,
hold down 'alt' to bring up the "File" menu, select "Advanced", select
"Advanced Settings" from the dropdown menu, adjust the priority of your wired adapter higher than your wireless adapter in the "Advanced Settings" window under the "Adapters and Bindings" tab.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click ?Mark as Answer? on the post that helps you, and to click ?Unmark as Answer? if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

Need to no if I have this right

they have a dsl modem going to a Linksys router to a 24 port switch then to a little 4 port switch. sure, so then Would it be modem to router then router to any port on the big switch or is there an uplink port on the big switch it should go to? then you would hook a cat5e from one of the regular ports on the 24 port switch and run it to the uplink port on the 4 port switch need to no if the whole sequence is right. Hope someone can help, john will told me the cable would go from the big switch to the uplink on the small switch but I am wondering if I have it all right or not and wonderiing about from the router to the 24 port switch does the cable just go in a regular port in the big switch or if there is an uplink port does it go there. Hope you can understand my rambleing here. Thanks (please don't send me to a link) just need to no modem to router to regular port or uplink port on 24 port switch then from regular port on 24 port switch to uplink port on the 4 port switch. Thanks

A:Solved: Windows xp hookup question for modem, router, switch, to switch?

Router to uplink port on 24 port switch, and then normal port on the 24 port switch to uplink port on the second 4 port switch. An auto-MDX port on a device negates the need to worry about uplink ports for that particular cable connection.

I have a wireless router connected to my modem, and ALL PC's connect to that for internet.

I also have a gigabit switch I use to transfer data in between several of the machines. I do it quite often and I don't want it eating up the wifi bandwidth.
I have done it before, but it has been a long time and I cannot remember how I forced internet traffic over the wifi and local traffic through the switch
Is the only way to do it to specifically tell Windows to use the IP address of the LAN connection? I know it will work that way, forcing local traffic directly to that IP, but I seem to remember there being an easier way to do this.

Hi everyone, I searched through the forums but couldn't really find what I was looking for.

Currently we have a DHCP server set up to a switch, that has a special line connecting to a switch in our shop which is just across our back lot, giving network access to the few computers over there. They recently put in a new machine that needs network access, but they have already accidentally cut two ethernet cords. I'm looking to provide a wireless solution for the machine, but I don't want to have to spend a few thousand dollars on a large wireless switch.

Can I plug a wireless router into the switch in our shop, and essentially turn it into a wireless bridge, or is there another, simpler way to do this?

If this has already been answered, sorry for missing it!

I need to keep the laptop running, therefore I can't put it to sleep and logging-off has become a pain.

I've tried the Power Options, but the display comes on again when the mouse is nudged.

I've also tried "Fn + F6" on my Acer laptop, which switches off the screen, but an accidental key press brings it to life again.

I thought that I had this all figured out, but my dad just asked me a question about my setup, and I can't answer it.

The setup is like this:
[ip-phones + computers]-->[small switch]-->[managed L2 switch]-->[router]-->[modem]

I have several ip-phones and computers grouped into blocks of 8. Each set of 8 is a medley of phones/computers connected to a small switch

Each of these switches, in turn, will be connected to a managed L2 switch that will create 2 VLANS: One VLAN will contain all of the phones, and the other will contain all of the computers. In turn, each VLAN will have its own router and DSL modem, thereby separating the network traffic.

I know that I can use this L2 switch to make the VLANS based on the MAC addresses of the devices. However, the smaller switches do not support 802.1q [VLANs]. Will it be a problem that the smaller switches do not support VLANs? Essentially, will this setup work to split up network traffic?

Thanks once again,

A:Computer, switch, switch, router, modem

I have the same DELL switch for my phones. You PoE will not carry across the linksys switches, so that is the first problem.
Next are the computers attached to the phones? Or does each device get its own drop?

And whats this about 2 routers and modems? Thats a bit over kill!! QoS would do the trick.

I would run all the devices off the Dell and attach the computers to the Phones (most IP Phones have a passthrough port) Configure the Dell with trunk ports with the Computer VLAN passing untagged traffic making it the native VLAN. While having the phones on a Tagged VLAN(If you phones conig allows you to set the VLAN in its config great! If not you can bind the MAC to the VLAN). The you create a QoS policy giving the VoIP traffic priority!

We are moving to a new office location. The guys who will be setting our network is proposing the following equipment:

1. 3Com 24-port 10/100 mbps switch
2. 24-port Patch panel
3. 6u data cabinet
4. 1u cable management

The new office will be a 2-floor building with around 40 computers. I asked some of my friends who are more expert on network setup and told me typical switch (Linksys, Cisco) will do if we need to save some money.

What do you think? Thanks a lot!

A:Is 3Com 24-switch necessary or typical switch will do?

Well, first off, I'd be specifying a gigabit switch for expandability, I can't see investing in a 10/100 switch in 2010! If you don't need a managed switch, or need to save money initially, and unmanaged switch will probably be significantly cheaper.

In point of fact, if you want to go really cheap, you can get away for less than $100! switch&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20

I understand that a hub is more like a party line, where all devices hear and read data before sending it to next port, and a switch is advanced hub. But, what is a router. I know what a wireless router is, but they say a router is more advanced than a switch. Can you buy a non-wireless router?

Also, can you connect 2 switches together? So, Modem-----to Switch----to Switch----Computer

And both switches have other devices connected?

A:Hub vs Switch vs Router/ 2 Switch Story

you CAN buy a non-wireless router--but--the two I found on Amazon were only 10/100 (most modern systems use gigabit ethernet 10/100/1000) but wired are generally cheaper than a wireless router(the Cisco below is NOT cheap)--however--it's not necessary to use the wireless part of the wireless router as most have at least 4 ports (wired).

Yes you can connect switches together but they won't allow for multiple computers to connect to the Internet (at least not easily nor in a way that makes sense).

What devices are you trying to connect together?

I am about to add 3 new servers into an existing network, which is currently all on 1gbps ethernet. All of the new servers are SSD-based and to me it makes sense to go with 10gbps coming out of the servers into a switch, and then 1gbps out to the workstations.

The new server location is about 200 feet from the existing networking equipment/old server location, so using Cat 6A/Cat 7 copper would be REALLY nice/economical.

Where I am hitting a jam is any 48 port gigabit + 4 10gbps switch is $$$.

I am trying to find a small 10gbps copper switch, say an 8 port, that is expandable, and compatible with a 48 port 1gbps switch. Does such a thing exist?

Actually that's a hard question, generally its not possible to install another motherboard, sometimes it is. In this case one is an AMD platform and the other is an Intel platform, there could be tons of differences in mounting holes, physical design, clearance, connectors, heat dissipation requirements, cooling systems, etc. Laptops are not like desktops that use more standardized designs.

Both computers are Core i3-4130, have 1 TB 7200 SATA 6G 3.5 HDs, same OS (Windows 7 Pro 64). My question is:  can I swap them out, or do I need to get an external HD enclosure and copy the 205t to the 490? If I need the external HD enclosure, looks like aluminum would be best, but would like recommendation for one which would hold my HD.

Hello ,

When I ran Windows 98, I was constantly rebooting and always switched the whole system off at the end of the day.

What are the pros and cons of leaving Windows 2000 on indefinitely?
Also, will this affect the wear of my monitor? Should that be switched off separately and the system left running?

Win2K is certainly very much more stable than 98, and hasn't crashed since I had it installed.

Pentium III
Win 2K
480 MB RAM

(I am looking to upgrade motherboard and videa card, etc. as soon as funds are available.)

Thanks for any thoughts you may have.

Hello. I currently have a home network as follows.

3 PC's connected to router.
router connected to cable modem.

I would like to increase the througput on my LAN (amongst the 3 pc's) so I'm thinking about adding a switch such that it would be [3pc's->switch->router-cable modem]. I was wondering whether adding the switch would actually improve the LAN thoroughput or is this just adding unnecessarily repetetive. I am aware of the "7 layers of the osi model" of networking but am wondering whether switches and routers work on the same layers. Im assuming NO because router bases routing based on IP address while switch will deal with the MAC addresses (am i correct???). Since a switch will perform less inspections on the packets (IP filtering, SPI, etc..) am I going to get better results when adding the switch??

BTW, my router: SMC2804WBR
Switch i might add: Gigafast Mini Switch EZ500-S

A:To switch or not to switch? That is the question.

Your router has a 100Mbit switch in it so unless you are getting a gigabit switch and your PCs have gigabit interfaces you will get no significant boost in network speed.

You may get a small speed inrease if you buy a good 100Mbit switch - the ones integrated in home routers tend to be the bottom of the barrel type - this will give you some extra under very high loads.

What is a "good" switch? You would want something with crossbar fabric and/or cut-through packet forwarding (those are expensive).

I just bought a netgear Cable/DSL router with an 8 port switch built in. I am currently still at school, so there is no need for the router, but I want to use the hardware as a switch. I am confused as to how to set this up.

The router I have is a Netgear RO318.

I know very little about setting up networks, but I assumed it would be the same as just switching out the hub. Boy was I wrong. I switched them out and it doesn't work like I thought it would. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks all.

Hi - I am having to extend my network and want to use 2 switches. Current one is a Belkin 5 port 10/100. Now thinking of buying the:

Belkin 8 port 10/100 (F5D5513Iuk8) or
Netgear 8 port 10/100 (FS608) or
Netgear Prosafe 8 port 10/100 (FS108).

Which is the best one to get (I realise the Netgear Prosafe is normally more expensive but I can get it at the same price as the Belkin)?

Could anybody also advise if the second switch will provide as much speed (bandwidth, I think) to the PCs it supplies (3) as the first one which will be linked to my router and 3 PCs and a couple of printers. I would really appreciate any advice you can give - I have spent ages Googling this question and am still not clear.

Many thanks

I am in the process of setting up a pretty extensive gigabit network in my home. I have the new D-Link DIR-655 Pre-N Router with four gigabit ports and I am using all four to run to 8-port D-Link unmanaged switches in four locations. The first location is right next to the router. I have a fifth location. I searched hard for an 8-port wired gigabit router. If I had found one (at a reasonable price) I would use it as the base in from the modem then use the D-Link for wireless only (no routing). Alas ... I was unable to find one and so I am wondering if there are any issues running from a switch to another switch.

A:Router to switch to switch?

Only issue is a slight impariment in speed as it passes thru two switches and the router . . You may not be able to decerne it.

So I just bought a KVM Switch mini size, the guy at the store told me that it would do the trick. The trick meaning that I would be able to switch between the Xbox 360 and the PC with no problems, at first I had a lot of trouble getting it to work until I realised that I had forgotten to plug the keyboard cable into the KVM Switch. At least I managed to get things to work... A bit.
The problem is that I manage to switch between the PC and the 360, but once I've switched to the 360 it immediately goes back to the PC. I've checked everything in the manual and I'm doing it "right" as far as I know:
"7. Switch between the computers (PC1 and PC2) by pressing the 'Select' button on the front panel.

Use the 'Hot Key' command on the keyboard. Press [Scroll Lock] quickly twice and then [1] or [2] to switch between computer 1 and computer 2."

Whenever I do this the KVM Switch beeps, switches to the 360 then back to the PC, could anyone please give me a hand?

Sure you can, but keep this in mind.

If I remove the kvm switch and go straight into pc1 the monitor works fine, but not if attached to the kvm switch. Hi guys

My first post here and I'm seeking help!

My PC has been working fine for months (since new).

It has an Aopen AK86Lmotherboard with an AMD Athlon 64 3200 processor.

I was using my PC this morning and it just switched off! I thought there hd been a power break but no.

I tried switching the PC back on, there was a quick flash of the power LED but that was it - NOTHING.

I removed the side panel and noticed a red LED on the motherboard was illuminated.

I tried to switch the PC on again, the power LED flashed and the CPU fan twitched but that's about it!

I thought it was likely to be a power supply problem so I replaced the power supply with a new one, made off all the connections correctly, connected the mains power lead, the red LED on the motherboard illuminated. I switched on from the front panel switch. Once again, the power LED flashed and the CPU fan twitched, but that was it - the red LED on the motherboard remained lit.

Any ideas guys?

I used to hate Windows for many years, because it was ugly, slow and unstable. However I liked the look of Windows 8 and it is faster than Mac OS X. I am very pleased by the modern look of the Metro UI and like the mix of Metro and Desktop. However I just cant stand the remaining pieces of AERO. It just burns in my eyes to go to the desktop and see the Trash icon. Or go to all apps and see notepad and others. There are Icon Packs available, but it is very uncomfortable to change each Icon. I just want to change all default Windows AERO icons, like all the apps, folder icons, icons in file explorer. Is there a tool to replace all Aero with Metro style? Thanks.

BTW. I want to buy the Surface Pro and go paperless. I will be using OneNote to take notes and I want to scan all the papers from lectures to have everything digitally. What is in your opinion the best way to keep it organized and easy to search something? I want them to be uploaded to skydrive, but to have only the pdf files and you need a paper from 2 months ago it can be very hard to find.

A:Switch from Mac OS X

HOORAY! And welcome!!

I also too want to go paperless as much as possible, and perfect using a fountain pen as I don't use ballpoint pens.

For the digital scanning of documents, simplest thing to do is to use folders, dates, and names for the scans. Like for example, a lecture from November would be in a folder called November, another folder with the date of 11-15 and the scan name being relevant to the topic of the lecture, let's call it Cats. To search, great thing you're using Windows 8 by the way, as it has some pretty awesome search capabilities. To search for ANYTHING, go to Start, and just type, for example, Cats. Hit the Files filter, and it'll show up. If you're looking for something that you don't remember the title, go to the Picture library, and enter in the search query, and then use the Search tools to filter down results.

Also, VERY important, USE SKYDRIVE!!! For your documents and scans that is. Don't want data loss! You can use the SkyDrive folder on the Desktop to do basically make an image of your documents library, so it won't be difficult to find things. The SkyDrive app can be used for general searching, using the Search charm (Start key and C, or mouse over to the top or bottom corners and move to the middle edge of the screen), you can find things as well, as well as searching for ANYTHING with ANY app that can be searched.

For OneNote, SkyDrive can take care of that for you, and you can keep those OneNote files on your Surface Pro as well for... Read more

It switched the PC off at the main electric supply but now it won't switch on again.

Where I live now the ISP Comcast almost has a monopoly. This is a very lousy company and they have outsourced their customer relation people to India, Mexico, & the Phillipines. And they charge so much money to have a pretty good progam with them for T.V. & Internet.

At this point I've spent so many hours trying to communicate computer problems at the number your given for Comcast that I think there is no point in calling them anymore unless I need a service call, because they always tell you the same things which at times makes your problem worse instead of better.

AT&T has been doing a lot of advertising for a while now and send reps to canvas areas from time to time. If I switched to AT&T I would save a lot of money. The reason I haven't yet is that I've heard that the download time is pretty slow.

The last time one of their reps came to see me I asked him what their download speed was. He said it was a guaranteed 24 Mbps. He also said that with comcast there were times when it really slowed down such as when kids get out of school and start using their computers.

I downloaded a site a long time ago called and when I use it with my computer it usually shows I'm getting download speeds of around 36 Mbps. They also have different tiers for your internet use which probably could make it faster....but I wouldn't get one because you have to pay even more. I just have one T.V. & one computer & I don&#... We have two external hard-drives that, due to being used daily and the inconvenience (and wear-and-tear) of constantly connecting/disconnecting, remain connected to our desk-top at all times.
It is my understanding that, should some virus or other malady occur, any connected storage devices can also be affected.
In lieu of physically dis-connecting these storage drives, it would seem to me that a simple switch disconnect would suffice to isolate them when they are not in use.
Does such a USB switch exist ?

If you're talking about a wired switch, you simply run a wire between the router and the switch.

If you're talking about a wireless connection, you need a wireless bridge, not a switch.

Currently I have a 100 Linksys router connecting my 2 pc's and my cable modem. Both pc's motherboards have Gigabit ethernet and I'm thinking of adding a Netgear GS605 gigabit switch to take advantage. I assume I'll have to replace the 2 Cat 5 cables for the pc's with Cat 6. Do I have to do something other than hook the 2 pc's using cat 6 cables to the switch and then use one of the old Cat 5 cables to connect the router to the switch?

I looked at the online installation pdf for the GS605 but was not clear if I needed a regular or crossover cable between the switch and router. Also, the pdf seemed to indicate it would be PnP, but do I need special drivers?

A:How do I add a switch?

Actually, unless you have very long runs, there will be no issue in using your existing CAT5 cables. CAT-5e is fully specified for gigabit operation.

You don't need any drivers, and you also don't need a crossover cable. All gigabit equipment is auto-sensing, so it'll handle the crossover for you.

Thanks in advance!!

A:Switch or HUB?!?

I prefer a switch, though in a network this size, it really doesn't matter much. A switch routes addressed conversations directly to the destination machine's port, a hub just sprays them out all the ports. Normal CAT-5 cables are required between a switch or hub and the machines.

Also, do I need to know something else than just buying a switch/hub and then plugging in? Last time I lanned with some friends we were just four and used my router. Just plug in and play was it. But now when we are the double amount, is there something else I need to know?

A:Hub or Switch?

You want a switch. A hub acts more like a splitter which causes all network devices plugged into it to run at half duplex. Also, all the devices will be sharing the same bandwidth which is 100 Mb.

This may seem strange to you but here goes..

Im going to buya new cpu. It has the Same OS and set up as my computer. However I want to take my HD from my cpu and put it into the new cpu as the primary HD.

"WITHOUT" any data loss.

I have never installed a HD or even switched a HD before. I want My original HD to be the primary, and the HD that comes with the new CPU to be the slave.

My questions to you guys are simple... what do i have to do exactly to get it to work properly? They both have "C:" drives which i know will have to be changed but ive never done that before. Ive never done much in the lines of building and setting up CPU's.

If the New CPU doesnt come with a XP disc, how would i go about setting it all up to run like my old CPU with an extra HD in it?

Please try and explain things in a noobie language so i wont screw anything up.

A:HD Switch

In very simple terms, you shouldn't do that.

Simply changing the "new PC" to boot from the "Old PC" HD will cause the new PC to crash or badly malfunction. The usual effect is that you get a shutdown during the bootup, to prevent damage to the new hardware.

This is because the new PC will have different hardware to that which existed when the old XP HD install was done, and it will be "force feeding" all the wrong driver code to the new PC motherboard, chaos will reign.

Apart from that you simply set the "new" HD jumper to "Slave" and leave the "old" one as "Master", connect them to the same IDE (flat ribbon cable) - assuming the "new PC" does not have the later SATA drive cable...

We really have no info on your hardware so its all a guess.

But please don't even consider doing what you suggest, unless both old and new motherboards and CPUs were identical.

Hi, I have 3 computers in our house. An Athlon XP 2000 (512K DDR 2700), an Athlon 550 and a 233 IBM laptop. All are networked and running WIN98se. The XP 2000 machine is about 3 months old and Iíve noticed that it is not as stable as the older machines. Sometimes it freezes and sometimes I get Ďprogram not respondingí during shut down. Itís not a major problem, just an annoyance, but I wonder why the XP machine is less stable than the others?

Iím thinking of upgrading the Operating systems of all of the machines, but Iím not sure to what. Windows XP seems like the logical choice, but Iíve heard that you canít load it on more that one machine. I want to be able to install the new OS on all 3 machines without having to buy 3 copie$$$. I donít know that much about Windows 2000 Pro. Is it limited to only one machine also? Iíve heard to stay away from Windows ME.

Can anyone give me a suggestion? Thanks.

A:Should I switch OS, but to what?

I was wanting to dual boot Win7 and Win8 but I just want to switch out the SDD's to this. Is this possible? Or will the secure boot thing mess up the Win8 installation?

A:Is it possible to switch out SDD's?

Well it seems that if your removing your SSD that has the win 8 install, it would never see the Win 7 installation If it doesn't turn off secure boot in your BIOS

Ok I have Vista x64 Ultimate on my laptop. Ive been contemplating Win7 x64 Ultimate. Although Im not sure if the extras are worth the extra disc space. I cant really think of any of the Vista Ultimate extras that I use. Ive also read that the only real improvement is more Mac like eye candy. I do a fair bit of gaming on my laptop. I havent dabbled with Win7 yet, but I do like some of the new looks. Ive been considering running a dual boot with Fedora or Ubuntu and Vista Ultimate. I havent decided on what to run. I also use my laptop for college.
Current specs are as follows:

Asus M50SV-A1
1440x900 WXGA Native Resolution
3Gbs Ram
Seagate Momentus 5400.4RPM HD 8Mb Cache
Realtek HD Audio Card

I also have a built in mic, webcam, and fingerprint scanner. Im concerned my laptop manufacturer doesnt have Win 7 x64 drivers.

Im also concerned that my most common software and games wont work.

This is where my question comes in. Is it worth it to switch to Win7 or should I just keep Vista and dual boot with a flavor of linux?

A:To Switch Or Not To Switch

The 64bit drivers could possibly be a problem, but check out the manufacturers sites before you make up your mind to see what is available.

I am running four 32 bit OS on 3 machines. Vista Basic, Vista Premium, and dual booting XP Media Centre Edition with the RC of Windows 7, and I have to say that Win 7 is without a doubt my preferred choice. There are still a few niggles as is to be expected but I won't be hesitating to buy it.

Vista made a start on the self repair of problems but quite often gets nowhere. This feature of Win7 seems to work quite well.

I have been using windows 2000 for a since it first came out. I haven't upgraded to windows xp. I have been following the developements of XPlite. It makes me think that if and when XPlite is released should I change to the xp OS. Are there major pros/cons of windows 2000 vs windows XP? Does anyone have a preference and why.

I know that question is a classic but, in my mind, I want to know if XP is all that and a bag of chips or just a new skin over w2k. Some say that the install on Xp is about 1.2g vs win2k is 400meg. For all that extra size does it offer anything that win2k doesn't?

Any info on this would be great

New to forums & Vista.

Have a Asus x83vb-1 Laptop - t5800 - 4g 5300 ddr2 - Nvidia 9300m GS.

I really do not have a real need for the x64. I want to run games that do not require x64.

Also can you turn off DX10 for DX10 games to improve performace - run them from a DX9 instead.

All bells a whistles aside - I am gonna streamline this system and I don't need the added junk bogging my cycles down.

IMO XP Pro x32 would do it for me and if possible I will reformat the HD completly without voiding warranty.

I really don't need it for what I want to do.

It came pre-installed from Asus.

There is not alot of support in gaming to warrant the DX10 or the x64 yet and this is not the best gaming laptop. I only spent $650 for the rig couldn't pass it up for that price.

Any and all help TIA,

A:Can you switch between 32 & 64 bit

You don't need 64-bit unless you are going with 4+ GB of RAM. I would run Vista 32-bit.

I have tryed vista i thought it looked nice and everything and beleive it or not it was faster then my xp machine.
well im thinking of putting vista rc1 back on my comp again.should I??
would there be any benifits?
(btw:I am one of those people who always has to have the best and the newest stuff and its driving me nuts not having vista.)

A:Should I Switch?

See if you can locate a copy of RC2 - it's more stable for me than RC1.

The benefits are that you'll have the latest technology. The drawback is that there isn't much that you can do with it right now unless you're really into playing with all of the new settings.
