Y510P, love or hate feeling

Q: Y510P, love or hate feeling

I just have mine for about 3 years, and I have this love/hate feeling. Love because I use for work and for gaming, and this fits me reasonably. Hate, because has no HD light, I have this left speaker known problem and the USB are in front, messing with typing and having mouse cables or other cables in the middle of the wrist. Love about 2 SLI GPUs, HATE about the low performance battery, even on ECO mode. Love to the possibility to install 32Gb memory, HATE because the screen is not high end as the rest of the hardware profile. Good, I vented enough. thanks.

I really like the sidebar, how it displays the weather, my processors and stuff. The amount of bogging down and issues it causes while it boots up when I first start windows makes it not really worht it. Is there a fix for this?

A:Feeling of love hate for Vista Sidebar!

If your system is an upgrade to vista you quite possibly would have some performance issues depending on the size of your disk, type of processor, amount of RAM...most users with vista preinstalled on a new system suffer no ill effects from the flashy/fancy effects that vista offers.

You can remove the side bar from starting or you can reduce the number of gadgets that it loads...it's really just users preference. The only "fix" would be to upgrade the system hardware (if yours was not a Vista "off the shelf" version.

I got nervous after 3 failed attempts to install the new preview, so I pulled all my Intel C600 HD controller drivers and let Windows install native drivers (read it on another forum). Guess what? It did not do squat. Hate it!

So now I'm thinking what if I have a hardware issue? I need to be sure so I did a Factory Refresh on my Win 8 installation. Run thru the update hoops again and the preview took, Yea! Love it!

But let's not celebrate yet folks. All my programs are now gone. MS said it would leave Windows apps alone and kill the 3rd party stuff. So I guess MS Office Enterprise is 3rd party because it's GONE! Hate it.

Spent hours rebuilding my programs (Steam games were a real joy with over 20 to download again, Thank god for 40 Meg DSL)

Got Chrome installed again and did a test drive with my wife's corporate email, and it works! Never worked with Windows 8. Love it again!

Then I ran Just Cause 2 to run the benchmark program and the video strobes like I have it in 3D mode (non 3D monitor) Hate it again.

I had this problem before in Win 8 but it somehow went away. Now it's back again. I thought nVidia might be trying to double the refresh rate for 3d, so I uninstalled all nVidia 3d drivers, but it did not help.

I'll keep trying until I figure it out, but I like to know what other are experiencing with this upgrade; Please share good or bad.

A:Windows 8.1 Preview; I hate it - I love it - I hate it.

I think the Refresh probably says that it will leave Windows Store apps alone. Windows Store apps being the full-screen 'Metro' apps but not 'Desktop' apps like MS Office.

However for future reference, if you've got your PC in a state where you like it, you can create your own Custom Refresh image which should keep apps that you've installed. Note that you will still lose quite a lot of settings when you use it to restore though.

My Compaq laptop has recently developed a bad symptom - it may even be terminal. When turning it on, it doesn't load any system software. It just has a heart image and a blinking cursor in the upper left screen.

I am not feeling the love, since it won't let me enter anything at the cursor. It runs on Windows XP Professional Any ideas what caused this? Or better yet how to fix it?

I have owned this, my first digital, for 7 months and was very pleased with just about everything until 2 weeks ago. I turned the camera on, took a few shots and went to turn it off. Low and behold the lens would not retract. Matter of fact it wouldn't do anything. The next day I took it into the nearest warranty depot kuzzin I still had some left. I spoke to the tech there and he advised " the optical unit (with all attached electronics) is shot and will need to be replaced." I quizzed him a little more and he said " it's quite a common problem and we replace lots of them." I'm not sure if he was blowing smoke at me when he continued by telling me " we haven't had one back a second time yet."
Anyone else have this problem?

A:I love / hate my Canon A70

I would suggest you post this question in the forum for Canon at the following site which is specifically for digital photography addicts:

Here you will get comments from experts as well as amateurs, and be able see what results others have been able to achieve with the same/other cameras.

Have a user claiming that most users will be disabling UAC, so here is the poll to see.

A:UAC - do you love it, hate it or deal with it?

Initially, I had it turned off as most people have done when they first encounter it I suppose. I know they intentionally made it annoying so that more developers would make safer software. After reading a lot on how it protects you quite well, I started using it. I find that it actually isn't that annoying or nagging as most people think. I hardly even notice it getting in the way any more and I find the extra layer of protection more comforting.

Just seeking everyone's opinion:
After trying out the RC for weeks, i've found it hard to get used to the superbar. I love the way it works for most programmes, but on certain occasions, it is just plain headache.

1. Multiple MSN conversations
I have to do a 2 point click, first the messenger icon, then the respective chat window (which can be on the other edge of the screen). Try doing it 5-10 times a minute and you'd know how headache it can be. I also can't tell which conversation's on alert without hovering/clicking on the icon, thus unable to ignore the less impt conversations. Alt+tab/flip3d doesn't highlight the alert windows too, and its annoying especially when one has to cycle through so many chat windows to get to the right one. I hope MS re-thinks how messenger should work on superbar.

2. Multiple tiling
Yes.. aero snap is touted as a usability upgrade, but it only works for 2 window comparisons. What if i want 3? 4? or tile a whole page of windows? I can no longer use the ctrl-select-tile windows method on this new bar.

Anyone find the above problematic? Care to share your experience in getting used to the new UI?

Thanks!

A:Superbar... love or hate?

At first I loved it...oh look at these cool previews! After a while it got annoying since it took 2 clicks instead of one.

Just replaced a computer that failed with a new one. I had hoped to salvage the old one somehow and contuine running XP Prof, but that was not to be.

So my new computer came with Vista Home Premium.

Things I like:

It has a pretty face.
It connected to the Network router and Optimum Cable Internet without any problems.
It connected to my Epson printer without a problem.

Things I do not like:

It will not run Music Match - a program I use all the time to convert CD music and audio books to MP3 -- for me this is big!
It will not run my copy of Nero
Many locations of features and utilities have been rearranged for no apparent reason. For the moment, it takes me longer to find things.
I am getting tired of all the NAGGING dialogs that keep me several clicks away for getting on with what I want to do.
Security features are bothersome and do not show an improvement.

I love how XP looks and the features but on 98 I rarely had pop-ups. They are killing me on this machine. I clean them all the time but geesh, they pop back up all the freaking time like E-bay, about:blank etc. Any-way, I've seen the problem with Zesty find posted a few times but no real answers. It's hidden itself well i think. Any new news on this awful adware?!? Also, I have pasted screen shots from my Process menu and HIJack This. These are right after I started my puter. Oh, and my start button and every thing on the start bar resonds very, very, very slowly, I have to tab between programs. Everything else on the computer works fine. And when I first got XP, I was really impressed with the start up speed! But now, I get to the welcome screen and click on my login and it takes many minutes for it to start up. What would cause this? I only have a few items that start up like mcaffee.

We've got the entire website which helps millions of people around the world solving their problems with windows vista. We read 100's of forums in which we find people curse vista and are not happy with it. But the strange part is people still use it. So here'e a question for all of the Vista users:
Do you LOVE or HATE Windows Vista?
No explanation needed as we already know the pros and cons.
Simply say YES or NO?
My answer would be a YES !
What about you guys?

A:Do you LOVE or HATE Windows Vista?

Yes - I love it. You asked whether or not people love or hate Vista, that's a double choice, so a simple Yes, by itself, could mean yes I hate it it or Yes I love it. (Likewise a simple No).

Geforce 8800 GTS
4 gigs adata ddr2 memory, not sure on speed

I have updated my video, onboard sound, and flashed my bios.

Checked memory voltages and they are correct.

What did you do just prior to the errors starting on 30 Jun? There is mention of issues with your McAfee program (the HTML UI component) on that date in the MSINFO32 report.

Hi there, new to this forum, but certainly not to the PC. I have been dealing many years with all kinds of things PC, am fortunate enough to know the man whose father (co) invented "Collosus" the first real computer in Bletchley Park in the UK, and I work as a computer systems integrator too for a large defence company in the UK.

Now, I have upgraded a while ago from Windows 7 to 8, and finally 8.1. Love many thing, hate a few, but I like being reminded of peoples birthdays and other dates on start up. Windows 8 xx is not for everyone I admit.

Do you miss the Startup and shutdown buttons though. Here's my solution.

Download these batch files and stick them somewhere on your PC, make a shortcut to them on say your desktop - here's my desktop btw. https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resi...t=photo%2c.jpg

And here are the two files to d/load and place on your PC, just right click, make a shortcut and change the Icon accordingly (I have used Shutdown and restart icons) - enjoy! https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resi...nt=file%2c.bat

I am a big fan of Windows 8, but after reading some negative comments on the forum and from some of the online journalists, I was wondering is it because I have had windows phone on my legendary HTC HD2 for some time, and even though I can duel boot into the latest version of android I tend to stick to WM7, so when I first tried win 8 it was a natural progression for me, so I thought a pole would be useful to find out if any win8 haters had a win7 phone.

I only know of 2 people personally who have a Windows phone.

I'm due for a phone upgrade at work and looked at my options today and I have a choice of

The poll needs another choice. I don't "Love" windows 8, but I don't "hate" it either. It's fine, but I'll be choosing to not use it.

I keep coming back into this forum from time to time, checking to see what is new with this coming OS. Love it or hate it, this is a huge transition for Microsoft and I for one am quite curious to see how this all plays out after launch.

What I keep noticing as I peruse these forums is that most in here fall into 1 of basically two categories. There are those who cannot stand the new interface (metro, lack of start button, start menu) and who are very frustrated with the changes after trying it out. This group I suspect is the larger of the two... Then there are those who love Windows 8 (they find it to be snappier, use less ram, etc). Most folks in this latter category have either managed to embrace the new UI and metro, or more often it seems, they have managed to use some 3rd party program to get Windows 8 to behave like good ol' Windows used to.

So what you see around here, are thread after thread where we have people posting their frustrations with the OS, and then we have people replying to them telling them that all they have to do is install this 3rd party app and everything will be peachy, it will behave just like 7 did.

To me this is no solution to the core problem, which is that Microsoft has once again taken away the power of choice from the end user. We don't get to choose. We are not smart enough it seems to know what we should like. I think they are in for a rude awakening. Can they not see that there is something completely wrong with having... Read more

There is something not quite striking the right note in MS Product Management.

I don't know what it is. Either they have the wrong people as Product Managers, or someone keeps overriding them.

They are trying something very big and risky here.

Hi Lidiaboo,

I am a newbie so my advice is that of a newbie.

Have you looked at soem of the pinned threads on this forum, there is one about slow machines that might help you.

Now the Windows Updates are more of a problem, they really do help keep your machine safe, but there a number of reasons that they don't install.

When you say that your machine is slow, is it all the time, is it a specific program?

Well it had to happen sometime! I have started getting Blue screens and it does not seem to be specific to any software. I recently upgraded my RAM but other than that, I can't think of any reason for this. I have included my dump file.

Thanks for the help.

A:Feeling Blue

I'll address some hardware issues. Did you set the RAM spec per their labels in your BIOS? Those have 1.65V and 10-12-12-31 timings and may be still set on the old specs.

OK well I in no way consider myself a comptuer expert, but I can usualy remove or fix issues with virius' pretty well... untill now.

This is my work computer, and reformatting is NOT an option, So I am hoping you can help.

Initially the issue was the Antivirus popup, I managed to remove that, in the begining. Then and still another issue is being redirected, not always.. but 80% of the time. Also I cannot use Windows update in anyway shape or form. Not from the start menu and not from the site itself. I can eventually get to it but it always says there was some sort of error. If I try from Start, the browser acts as if I have no internet connection. I have run HJT and removed a few things, also HouseCall & MalwareBytes was able to pull a few things off yesterday, as well as AVAST. Yesterday the Anitvirus pest showed up again but not completely, only the little popups saying everything was infected, but not the actual interface. I dunno if it is regenerating itself or what but at this point I am at wits end. It has been since last WED I have been trying to get rid of this issue while working inbetween.

Now I am headed out of town on thursday and do not want to leave the PC like this for them to try and do work on without knowing what they can and cannot use/do.

Here is my HJT log.

A:Feeling defeated.. Please help

UPDATE:

One of my coworkers and I messed with the PC a little more today, and turns out Microsoft's newest Malicious Software removal tool has found something. Aleron (sp?) and removed most of it. The other parts it could not remove, it gave instructions on manual removal. We also had to go into ip config and do an ip release.

So far so good! When we left for the night we were trying to see if Windows update was actually going to work. For the most part at this point the redirect issue seems to be fixed... BUT I didn't have a chance to completly check.

I will when I get into work in the AM and update again from there.

A:I Have An Eery Feeling.....

Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today. Sorry about the long wait, but as you can see our HJT Team is very busy at the moment. The good news is that I see no malware showing up in your HijackThis log, what makes you think you are infected with something? However, I see no evidence that you are running a firewall on your computer, and this is one security program it is near vital to have installed. A firewall acts as an extra layer of security, which restricts access to your computer from the outside world, and can therefore prevent infections from being installed in the first place. Please download one of these free firewalls:Zone AlarmKerioIf you would like some more information about firewalls and how to use them effectively, take a look here. You're using an outdated version of Java (latest one is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6). Please update and remove the older versions. Do the following:Go to Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove ProgramsSearch in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )Select it and click Remove. Then download and install the newest version from here:Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6Please let me know in your next reply what problems you are having that makes you think you are infected. Thanks,Charles

about this ol' computer of mine. Recently, finally, got hooked up with wireless highspeed and ever since then, my computer has been slow and akward. Did a couple of virus scan, turns out there was a few, and everything says all is clean, but nothing seems to be running any better.

I am running a intel celeron 2.4, with windows xp, service pack 2. below is my most recent hijack this log, created on startup (I don't know if that makes a difference or not).

A:Got a funny feeling

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!
Please close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of SDFix and make sure you are disconnected from the Internet after downloading the program but before extracting the files.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with SDFix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Serv... Read more

Hi Techspot Friends,

I'm learning more everyday about the more technical side of computers, and could use some advice on upgrading my current, and somewhat outdated, system.

Motherboard:
CPU Type AMD Athlon 64, 1800 MHz (9 x 200) 3000+
Motherboard Name Unknown
Motherboard Chipset ATI Radeon Xpress 200, AMD Hammer
System Memory 2048 MB (DDR SDRAM)

Display:
Video Adapter Radeon X1600/1650 Series Secondary(256 MB)
Video Adapter Radeon X1600/X1650 Series(256 MB)
3D Accelerator ATI RV530 Pro

Hard Drive:
Drive #1 - WDC WD25 00JS-00NCB1 SCSI Disk Device (232 GB) SATA

Basically, I'm of the opinion that the current Socket 939 is limiting my ability to move into Dual Core Processors, and that upgrade would require me to buy a new MoBo. If I'm wrong about that I guess that simplifys things, but as of now I'm thinking I need a new MoBo and CPU, and as long as I'm replacing those two things I might as well upgrade the Graphics Card, and Hard drive too.

I use this computer for jsut about everything; Work, Music Production, Graphic Design, and Gaming. Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Feeling the Need to Upgrade

Hi,BLM73

can you list the specs and model of your motherboard? many 939 mb's can accept a dual core 64 x2 CPU with a bios update. also your budget for upgrading.

I'm usually pretty good about keeping junk of my pc, but I have a nagging feeling that I am infected with something. I was playing WoW when my computer just spontaneously rebooted on me. If you guys could take peak at my hijack this log, i'd appreciate it!

*EDIT

Sorry, didn't realize at first I wasn't supposed to post HJT logs here, i'll post it in the logs forum.

A:I have a feeling I am infected with something

Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.

I have been using my Dell XPS 8700 with monitor UZ2215H for over a year now and I can say I have been satisfied.  Last week, I had to change my desk. To disconnect the two, I didn't touch anything from the back panel of my tower but just unplugged the cables at the back of the monitor. When I tried to plug them again, I always have this message: " This computer has an add-in graphics monitor, but the monitor cable is plugged into the integrated video connector.  ..."  I was surprised to have that message because I know it has been connected to the add-in graphics instead of the integrated graphics card. I tried all possibilities that I can think of after searching possible solutions in the internet.
I am beginning to suspect the adapter is now faulty...Why? Because whether I connect the HDMI cable to the integrated graphics card or to the add-in, it gives the same message.
Please let me know if there is something I overlook here.  The adapter itself (a tiny piece it is) is not that cheap so I don't want to order a replacement  right away without being sure.  Thank you for any help you can give.

I was running a pair of Geil dual channel PC3200 DDR400 (2x512) in my system when I decided to add another GB of memory. The Geil's timings were 2-3-3-6. I bought a pair of Corsair XMS (2x512) that on CPUZ showed they ran at 2-3-3-7 @ 166 MHz and 2.5-3-3-8 @ 200 MHz. If I have all 4 installed, on POST it shows that I have 2 GB DDR400 @ 166 MHz. That is with everything at stock options, NO overclocking. If I remove the Corsair and replace it with a pair of Patriot dual channel that runs at 2.5-3-3-8 at 200MHz, under the "Memory" tab in CPUZ it shows the frequency at only 100.5 MHz. Am I doing something horribly wrong here or am I just plain stupid? The memory slots are color coded so they can be run in dual channel and I am not color blind (the matched pairs are in the right slots ) so why can't I get 2 GB of dual channel RAM to run at 200MHz. With just the Geil in there I can overclock the FX-55 to 2.975 and be completely stable. Running 2 GB's of RAM and it doesn't even run at stock speeds. At boot it puts me in safe mode and tellss me to reset my CPU speed which is at 2600, what it is clocked at out of the box. So am I stupid, or is the RAM just not compatible or should I take up badmitton?

hey,

bought my first external HDD the other day, 2TB western digital element. I've never bought a HDD before other than just having computers i buy come with HDD inside.

When i put my hand on it when it is running, i feel vibration which i guess is normal but i also feel these kicks that feel like a baby kicking inside or something lol. The frequency of the kicks changes it isn't constant... 2 or 3 every second sometimes 1 a second only or 1 every few seconds.

Is that normal or should i be worried? Thanks for advice. Secondly i would like to ask, is it ok to move it while it is running... I know laptops can be moved while running but i just don't know how 'delicate' these external 3.5 inch drives are... thanks.

I would say that is normal...as for moving it I would say best not to

Well.. here's the story:
I was about to help a friend to install a new SATA drive to her HP computer.. nothing fancy or that hard..
So did i think anyway..
Installed the damn (sorry) drive and booted up.. NOTHING! Where the *** is the drive ? Couldn't find it anywhere at all :/ . Tried several different drivers from viaarena (probably all drivers they had) and nothing at all happened, couldnt find the *** driver in BIOS or computer management when it loaded windows on the old drive..

Thought that ok.. need some separate drives that isn't supported by VIA and downloaded a "super special SATA enabled XP" from my local Torrent dealer (ofcourse i used the legit key) ..
Nothing, zip NADA !! Panic.. what the heck is going on here ?.. back to the driver dealer and ofcourse they'll found the drive at once .. OK .. the cable is broken.. get me an new one and i should go home and install that *** drive.

Is anyhone suprized if that wasn't the problem ?

After 4(!) days i was about to throw that damn computer outta my window without opening it first!

Then it struck me like lightning.. "hey Bad.. it is a SATA2 disc, does the motherboard support it ?" Ofcourse not!

Then i adjusted the transferspeed and it worked like a clockwork..

The lesson to be learned here is : Think before installing new hardwawre! It might save you alot of work.

unplug everthing that is connected / network cards hard wires for connection

the only thing i want you to have connected is the monitor/ps/2 mouse & ps/2 keyboard

lately my computer has been stuffing around. my brother tells me he has been getting the blue screen of death which hasn't happened to me thus far.
I experience problems with programs like msn, firefox, media player where they become unpredictable and nonfunctional for their purpose because they shut down irrationally, to which I later get a error message saying the program encountered a serious problem and needs to shut.
just now the system was just not the same. I reset and the display settings went all botched and unclear. I reset again and the display was back to normal.
I'll be honest and say that I havnt done a antivirus check in about 2 months. I am doing one as I type. when I opened spybot it gave me a message saying the program has changed and is unusual because spybot doesn't change itself. in saying that I dont think it is a virus because I recall now that I had the same problem about 8 months ago I kept getting the blue screen of death and serious system errors until I reinstalled windows. my believed causes to what had caused the errors 8 months ago are not the same to what has been happening so far. other possible information I could offer is that I have been recieving messages on startup saying my chipfan speed and sometimes cpu fan speed is too low. they are unusual because they are inconsistent. aswell, I replaced my cpu fan not 3 months ago and am in a bidding war on ebay trying to get a chipfan. any help is much appreciated guys because I dont wanna go t... Hi wogeroo. . .

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - XP Support!

There is a good possibility that the BSODs have left valuable memory dump files in their wake. I will be glad to take a look at them to see if a probable cause can be determined.

The memory dump files should be located in c:\%SystemRoot%\Minidump, with %SystemRoot% being the name of the folder containing the Windows files - usually c:\windows\minidump\ - the dump files will be named similar to "Mini032708-01.dmp". Get them all - regardless of the number or date.

One item that would be of help yo me is a Belarc Advisor report saved in "mht" format (Top right of IE screen; Page; Saved as; save as mht). You can download Belarc HERE. However, before attaching to your post please be sure to delete the information related to your product key codes located about ?way down the report. You can then either include the report in the same zip file as the dumps (preferred) and attach to your next post or send all of the files as email attachments to me at TSFjcgriff2*at*gmail.com. If you send via email, please place your screen name in the subject and a link to this thread in the body. Failure to do so may result in the email being considered as SPAM and I won't receive it. My results will then be posted here in this thread.

Please be patient as I do have many other memory dumps to process. Should you have any questions regarding the aforementioned, please POST again... Read more

Okay, so my Norton trial run ran out and I'm stuck with WD for the time being on my new W8 Notebook.  So the question is, is that good enough?  I did a little research,
but as is often the case, the info is ambiguous or uninformed, even if well-intentioned.  What I'm thinking of doing is getting the pro version of SuperAntiSpyware, since it's already on my computer and it offers real-time protection.  Question is, will the real-time protection that it offers with my Windows Defender be good enough?

So that's what I need to know:  First, is running with WD only good enough; and if not, would WD+SA be good enough?

I recently (two weeks ago) upgraded my system from W98 to W2k. The first time I installed, the program , I did it keeping my w98 folders etc. Ther were some errors and I tried to re-install, choosing the overwrite option. (also downloaded service pack one! I tried to download service pack 4 but it told me there was not enough memory) I have been left with two W2k directories. I have been using the most recent one (the preferred one) and have slowly been copying my important files using my flash disk from the other W2k directory. The only problem I have had is that althought the drivers and soft ware are installed, everytime I connect and switch my digital camera on, the sytem reboots. ......... So going fine until today. Iwanted to "defrag " the preferred W2k directory but was told there was not enough disk space. I thought then to uninstall programs on the other W2k diectory that I was not using. ie. mainly software etc for which I have disk and have reinstalled on the preferred W2k directory. Well after I had finished I rebooted, and then the trouble began! I cannot get into the "preferred" W2k
directory. I swear I did not change or remove any settings or programs. What happens is I log on, the machine starts booting up, gives me the option to chose which W2k, I choose, the system goes further to the white W2k screen which says "installing W2k" this finishes and then.... as my desk top starts loading the pc automatically reboots itself.

about a month ago, i turned on my laptop to find something called dealio added to my internet explorer add ons. it took me for ever to remove it. i was finally sucessfull in getting rid of it, but then found that i had the smitfraud virus. the button to turn off windows disappeared, as well as several buttons on the ctrl alt delete menu. again, i was able to get that worked out and was able to run avg anti-virus. it proclaimed to fix a trojan and several spyware entries.

well, since then, my laptop has been running extremly slow while surfing the web. ive followed the directions in the tools section to try and get to the bottom of my problem. i also downloaded a uniblue registry cleaner2 and scanned my system registry. avg reports nothing else.

im not sure where to turn. im hoping i came to the right place as any help is appreciated.

Let's face it, now that you have that under your belt, you probably have a hardware problem. Have you checked the RAM with a floppy program that is freely available? Have you checked the temperature of you MOBO and processor (assuming your mobo supports this) by running Aida32?

The link to Aida32 is in my signature below. If you need the RAM test link, post back and stick around. I'll dig it up for you.

Hi everyone,

So my school burned me an installation DVD of Windows 7. I want to install it on my DVD-drive-less PC. I have a DVD drive & USB drives on my laptop. I scoured the internet for tutorials on how to do the DVD to USB thing, finding out I need a .iso file. My installation DVD has no .iso file. So I attempted the following tutorial:

How to Create a Bootable ISO from Windows 7 Installation Files:
Bootable ISO - Create from Installation Files

My student DVD has none of the following files:
Windows 7-HP-Retail-en-us-x64.exe
* setup1.box * setup2.box

Though, it does have a setup.exe. Do I follow the aforementioned tutorial with setup.exe instead of Windows 7-HP-Retail-en-us-x64.exe, setup1.box, and setup2.box?

If not, how in the world do I begin to install Windows 7 on my DVD-drive-less PC (other than buying a DVD drive)?

Just because you have a copy of Win7 you can not install it without a key.
If it is a retail copy and not a burned duplicate your OK and should have a key to install.

If not you need to buy Win 7 with a key.

Hi guys!
My PC is feeling a bit sluggish at the moment. Ive run NOD32 Virus scans and ad-aware 2008 spyware scans and my pc seems fine apart from 1 or 2 tracking cookies now and again.
But whenever i load up my Computer view (vista) to display all my network locations and my drives (C and D) it freezes for a few minutes then it comes back to normal. My whole pc doesnt freeze, just the Computer window! If i go to run and type in C:\program files or another path its fine! Its just when i load up C:\ or D:\ or the Computer window!

Also i have this thing popping up at startup but i cant find it in the registery or anywhere in msconfig/startup folder. Its called a Kishkish Lie detector for skype (which i unistalled). But on every startup it pops up saying it cant load properly.

Hey all,  New here.  Thanks in advance for help on this topic.

Background - My wife and I have the exact same PC.  A HP Envy DV7 running Windows 8.  After about 3 months it was determined that my HD failed.  So I ordered one, replaced it, and no problems since.

Fast forward to today, about 2 years later, and my wife's PC will start to boot but then when the password is given it starts to load windows but the start menu comes up for a second and then flickers and restarts and trys again to load the start menu, over and over to no avail.  It also looks like all the apps are not there-likely b/c it does not have enough time to populate them before flickering/resetting and trying again to boot, I started it in Safe Mode and it brings up the same general apps, not all the apps it normally brings up.  Then it just continues to flicker trying to pull the apps but can't.  I ran all the tests in the bios, tried to update the bios but said there wasn't a 'something' to update them with.  I have booted into safe mode.  It will not let me reset or refresh or troubleshoot and when I try it gave me an error code 80070490.

One other note...She has had windows freeze for the last year or so.  Meaning she will open a folder, drill down into that older to open a file, then go to close the folder and it freezes.  Te rest of her desktop and files and programs will still work so she just drags the frozen folder to he... Ok, I am working on my mom's computer which is a relatively new dell desktop touch screen, unfortunately I haven't spent much time with it b/c she had our local computer guy "set it up" which meant that I didn't do my normal setup of boot discs, security software with automatic updates and cleaning (something beyond her "norton") which she and I will agree to disagree on. Personally I hate Norton bc it slows down the system and notoriously does not protect your computer as well as people think.... Anyhow, I noticed about a week ago when I was using her computer that her browser was acting like nothing I had ever experienced before... I couldn't even type a website in without it redirecting me, What?!? That was simple enough to diagnosis with a little googling on a different device... So I downloaded my favorite computer clean up freeware tools on my internet, put them on a thumb drive (bc she lives in a more rural area and has really slow internet... ) I was kinda busy so I handed the thumb drive to my mom and told her to install the programs, make sure they were up to date and run scans... And poof problem fixed, or so we thought... Less than a day later when the computer booted up, it seemed normal... But after typing in the password the little dots that spin in a circle on the password page just keep spinning and it never truly boots.. and here is where I feel really dumb, I didn't double check her boot disc that she had... I also am not familiar with ... Read more

OK, here is what happens when you are sleep deprived - needed a program to find duplicate photos and confused this POS with a legit program that this one appears to copy with a few minor cosmetic changes. Here's the link.

http://freepicturesolutions.com/free-duplicate-photo-finder.html

Yes, I downloaded and ran a file from a site that proudly features a button DOWNLAD NOW. You know, when you read about some particularly dumb crime and think "what the hell were they thinking" - well, that's how I feel today after 10 hours of sleep.

Now, Norton that I have did not flag it when downloading or installing. Also ran virustotal on installer and did not find anything Later when I checked the actual program file, I got two positives
https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/0167dee2ac74bf3bbca07b7e755e432b188152f5b998b4f59ac0daf83156fd65/analysis/1474749538/

After this ran Malwarebytes and Hitmanpro on my PC and did not find anything, but I am still paranoid. On one hand I am thinking "nuke from orbit" type approach but I really don't want to nuke my Win10 install and rebuild from scratch. This is actually my basement PC that is a plex server and storage for all photos, movies etc and there is one SDD with Win10 in it and four hard drives with photos, movies and other junk in it, if I were to assume all hard drives could be compromised, I am not even sure where to start with regards to safely moving content and then nuking all the drives.
Thoughts?

Hello,
I recently installed Kerios' WinRoute Lite on my WinXP machine, so that all other computers on the network could get internet access. I had tried Windows ICS but had a bit of trouble so I went with Kerio. Anyway, it all runs fine, internet is nice and fast.
Except, I can't run Zone Alarm on the WinXP machine anymore. Well I can... but it stops any webpages from loading (and all other programs using the net from accessing servers). So in essence, Zone Alarm and WinRoute Lite aren't mixing too well. I have enable WinRoute Lite full access (all green ticks) in Zone Alarm, but too no avail. Any ideas on how to get the two to work together? I can install ZA on all the other PC's and it runs fine (however they don't need WinRoute Lite installed to access the internet through the network).
I've always loved being nice and invisible thanks to ZA. But without out it I am quite able to be seen when I run a scan at grc.com. All my ports are closed (thank goodness), but I'm not in stealth mode like I was with ZA.
Is this able to be fixed? Or should I just be thankful my ports are closed and just move on? Or is Stealth mode extra extra important?
Thanks

Was recently browsing some images hosted on sites that re-direct you and ask that you click here to continue to your requested site.

Few seconds after clicking that my Windows XP theme changed to Windows classic theme and I saw some files pop up on my desk top (could not see what they were) and a nanosecond later my computer just completely shut down and restarted, ever since I've just noticed the computer being a lot slower, also got this error while not even doing anything.

Generic host process for win32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close

Other than that and a few other weird bugs with some of my frequently used programs I don't know what else to add, I did however run Ad aware and Spybot S&D scans that found nothing, here is my Hijack this log.

An excellent training log. Mucho poopo, if you know what I mean. Let's get started.

I've read all posts on similar problems. Firefox 5 saves only my email password - nothing else. I've marked "save password", adjusted history checks (allowing all), checked "private viewing", etc. Does anyone know a (simple?) fix? Thanks in advance.

A:Firefox / Passwords (Once more with Feeling)

It all depends on the site that you are using if you are able to save passwords. What sites are not saving your passwords?

On a desktop, the Charms UI is somewhat awkward to use. I have the navigation down and all, but it seems odd. Also, the app switcher doesn't work on the Desktop view, I've accidentally switched to an app when I'm in Outlook. Since a majority of the Settings sidebar are already in the lower right hand side of the Task Bar, the search Charm might not be really used in the Desktop nor Devices so much, it would better sense to place them in the Task Bar on systems without touch screens. Then, replace the static Start button in the lower left hand side with the new Start window logo, it would be better for mouse navigation. It just doesn't feel right in the Desktop View with the touch version of pulling up the Charms bar. The Developer Preview did it better.

I'm not sure how to switch between apps though...

Another thing, the sidebars NEED to be smaller on desktop systems, it's odd with it being so large.

A:I have a feeling that the Charms can be in the System Tray.

You can get to the charms bar easily with winkey+c.

A few friends of mine told me, and I didn't listen. They all said they didn't like ATI, and some had problems with the Radeon 7000. But everyone said it was SOOOO good. Now I'm depressed and stuck with something I can't get working right....

Hi, I have installed Windows 7 home premium 64 bit onto a new hard drive just 2 days ago. And I have installed drivers for the motherboard and video card and sound card as well afterwards. But when I start to work on it the next day, the problems began. I think it started with some IRQL blue screen error, then after would be freezing (this is the everything stopped on the screen and weird constant static sound if you turn speaker on thing right?) ALOT whenever I am running this one game. I thought it might be the graphic card since even when I just left the computer on transferring some files from a hard drive to another one, and come back a few hours later, the monitor would seems to be off (with an orange light) but the computer would still be on, forcing me to reset it. So I went to the nvidia site again and saw they have a new driver last night and updated to that, and everything seems to went smoothly afterwards (no crash and freezing). But when I try to run the game again this morning, 2 minutes into it and bam, froze again .
So I am not really sure what to update anymore now :/

I have included the dxdiag info thing too
PS. just tested out mass effect 2, and it froze after about an hour and half of gameplay, so it seems to be sort of random :/

Update: I took out the sound card and is using the onboard sound, but the problem is still there, still random freezes, and I just got some bsod this morning and updated the minidump with the new one, if anyone have any ... Read more

A:Guess the computer is feeling the winter too

I have been working with graphics programs now for 2-3 years. I do a lot of things needed for work but still just an amateur. It is never more apparent (my amateur status) than it is now when I am supposed to be updating our web site and all of my new stuff is creating larger files than the images that are currently in place.
I am sizing them the same and I upload them and they are bigger. I thought I was going crazy so I tried this. I downloaded one from our site and tried the following just for an example.
The photo is
6KB/6542bytes 275w x160h pixels /res 305
then I did nothing more than reduce the resolution down to 92. The size of the object stayed the same , still 275x160 pixels. I go to upload it and now it is twice the size than it was before I reduced the pixels. The reduced pixels made the photo only slightly smaller but bigger files. Our web master is going to kill me if I update with larger files sizes. What is the deal? Am I missing something?
using Serif Photo Plus 10

I attached both photos.

before: 6KB/6542bytes 275w x160h /res 305
after: 13KB/13841 and still 275x160 pixels resolution is 92

I have searched through the previous posts and my issues seems to be similiar to others many of you have dealt with in the past - Thanks in advance for any and all help you can provide. I work from my home office and this is a big problem for me (as it would be for most).Current status:1. I have completed all steps reccomended / researched to isolate and identify this problem.2. I have attached (uploaded both the hijackthis results as well as the activescan report from panda. I also cut and past both at the bottom as I do not want to have to "reply" to my own post which apparently can screw up someone from responding.3. I have also installed and scanned with trend micro antivirus program which found and "fixed" some threats. I believe the issues is the fact that this virus 'renames' itself and without stopping the system restore and deleting the virus from **wherever** it just keeps rearing its ugly head.RECENT RESULTS FROM TREND:3a. I have disabled the system restore, cleaned the virus with Trendmicro, ran ATFcleaner, adaware, sbybot search and destroy, installed spyblaster and started ONE firewall (zone alarm).5. Hi everyone!

I have been given a copy of Visual Studio 2003 Academic ... and I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing . Well, correction. I know what I'm doing-I'm coding Windows applications. I'm a geek, and I have a clue, but when I open the software, It's like... "Here's a grid full of dots. Great. What does it do?" I've been looking through chapter 1 of the walkthroughs, but all I'm really seeing is ".NET is this great thing by M$ in which information is transferred from computetr to computer, and the world will go on in happy harmony with excanges of information, oh and did I say exchanges of information?" The rest of the book looks like it's been written for someone who's programmed before... not me. Are there any good tutorials on the Internet that don't advertise and that explains things for the more simple-minded of us? I feel like I should know what I'm doing, but I kind of... don't.

You might find it useful to learn the syntax of Basic first, before you move on to Visual Studio.

Yesterday I noticed that AVG, ZoneAlarm and Windows Defender were all turned on. I turned them back on and AVG gave me an error saying that "VDB check has failed". When I tried to fix it nothing would happen. To be safe, I ran a scan with AVG and Malwarebytes and they found nothing, so I kind of shrugged it off, hoping that AVG would fix itself the next time I restarted. When I came back on today I noticed that all three programs were turned off again, and AVG was still having the same problem. I turned them back on, but I'm a bit concerned as this activity is really suspicious.

Uninstall AVG and ZoneAlarm, then install Microsoft Security Essentials 4.0.1526.0 and stick with the built-in Windows 7 firewall.

Most recently from (May 2008 and on) my games have started to hard crash my laptop no warnings, no blue screen, just a flat out black screen and the laptop literally turns off. Before the posted date I could play games without any glitches what so every it was smooth sailing.

Anyway, here is a list of the games I have and had on my laptop.

Command & Conquer: Zero Hour (modded) - current in system
Star Trek: StarFleet Command II (modded) - current in system
Homeworld 2 (modded) - current in system
Americas Army - current in system
AVP2 (modded)
Call of Duty
Medal of Honor

I have consolidated my games one is on the C drive and three are on D which is my partition drive.

Here's what I believe caused the rest of my games to crash. I DL and installed a mod to my Homeworld 2. The mod is called Homeworld Battle Star Galactic mod. As soon as I started the mod the game mod would cease and close returning to the desktop. I started the mod again and eventually it worked except when I began to build the fleet of ships.

Now after the serious crashes I read the forums from the mod site and found out that the models are really high poly, plus the mod designers are using new shader codes for their mod.

Which I think after researching, their mod may have corrupted my 'performance counters' or something because I have never ever had any issues with the games listed above to crash my laptop period. Could it be a Microsoft update that I don't know I installed not al... Read more

Hi,
I've received great support here in the past, so I have a really good feeling that someone is going to be able to help me now as well.
I can't say for sure that I'm infected with anything, but I have a feeling this is some sort of virus or other form of malware.
I'm running XP Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.25GB RAM), but at the moment I am posting this through Ubuntu (dual boot), since XP is having a hard time booting. My computer is verrrry slow, sometimes it boots, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I get the login screen and after logging in it just freezes. When it boots and logs in, it just performs very slowly. Also, I often get messages saying "Eset Service has encountered a problem and needs to close". This is the main reason I'm thinking this is malware. I usually scan everything I download before opening it, including program setup files.
Last 2 programs I remember downloading+installing recently are (1) an update to VLC, and (2) TaggedFrog (a program that lets me tag files on XP). I'm not saying one of them caused this, but I'm not ruling it out either.
I ended up uninstalling ESET NOD32 v3, in order to install NOD32 v4. The reason I hadn't updated up til today is because I had used v4 before, didn't like it (it slowed down my PC much more than v3, which is the reason I loved v3 more than all other antivirus programs). Currently XP has no antivirus installed, since everything got slower around the time I w... Read more

Hi,

I seem to have a nagging suspicion that something is running in my system's background.

For instance:
When completely deleting files from the recycle bin, i constantly get the pop-up message 'Error deleting File or folder', "Cannot remove folder prn: Cannot find the specified file', "Make sure you specify the correct path and file name".When completely deleting files from the recycle bin, i constantly get the pop-up message 'Error deleting File or folder', "Cannot remove folder prn: Cannot find the specified file', "Make sure you specify the correct path and file name".Slight hessitation lag in any action i perform, such as opening of applications or folders, typing and deleting of words.Sluggish start-up and shut-down performance.I also have noticed that the service process winlogon.exe shows in task manager, but is not visible using TuneUp's Process Manager.

I must note have made some modifications to system files such as sysdm.exe, msgina.exe etc. My explorer.exe (now called ExplorerF***Me.exe) all based on hacks recommended by AskVG.com. Though i am doubtfu... Read more

In my trials with Windows 7, I liked it but as I used it consistently my interest gradually decreased. This is mostly due to the fact that I still run Vista on my two primary computers and run Win7 on two systems I keep to use when I'm not at college.

My point is this: while I understand Win7 is trying to lure those who stayed away from Vista and continued to use XP, as a Vista user I feel like Windows 7 hasn't made me feel as welcome. It does have spit-and-polish but their new features like Aero Shake and Snap don't seem that...functional.

However, at the same time, I haven't really dug down deep into the OS. I know the new HomeGroup features are touted as the next major step in multi-system synergy but since I don't have a large collective of Win7 systems all in one place, I can't really test out the range of these features. For resource-intensiveness, I haven't felt any degree of improvement over Vista (which DID cause a significant performance jump when installed it on my once-XP laptop) but maybe it's there and working in subtle ways. I don't have a netbook but I have heard good things in that department.

All-in-all, I guess what I'm trying to say is Win7 to Vista people is going more lateral than forward. Not saying that's a bad thing because maybe we were never the intended targets anyway (that is MS probably won't freak out as much as they did when XP users held their ground when Vista first touched down).

Now, feel free to tell me I completely missed something.

A:So...yeah, I'm feeling kind of lonely as a Vista user..

I agree with you to a point. I know my Desktop has done fine with Vista x64 RTM since I installed it back in mid '07. My Lappie on the other hand always has issues but that was probably due to the awkward OEM build that came with it. I since wiped the HDD and did a fresh x64 Win 7 RC install and all is great. My Main PC is still running Vista (now SP2) really well and I still use it for 90% of my computing. I guess I'm still waiting on RTM to do a sweeping change over on all 3 of my home systems (Main PC and mine and wife's Lappie) and see how that goes. But I think that the streamlining of extra features (i.e. movie maker etc.) and making those optional items is a good way to go as it makes the system more customizable. That if you don't use it you don't have it clogging up the system. (I'm speaking from a Joe 6pack User level as opposed to us who have a more advanced level of OS knowledge) But now I'm just rambling on and on....

A:my 4 month old custom built quad core machine is feeling sluggish?

I've found that this sometimes happens when your computer lags, just kill your explorer.exe and then restore it.

Or reboot.

I'm going to start off by saying that I'm not even sure Vista is the general problem, but I've narrowed it down, and Vista seems to be the most logical culprit.

I have Vista Home Premium 64-bit on a new Toshiba laptop that I just bought. (The full specs of the laptop can be found here.) And it worked just fine initially. I was able to connect it to my Comcast modem through my Linksys WRT110 router. Anyway, as time passed, the connection eventually became very unstable. It would start disconnecting randomly on and off every minute or so. (While being right next to my router.) So, I got on my Desktop (Which I'm using right now.) to look up a possible solution, and found that the internet on my Desktop (Which is connected by cables to my router.) was also dead. I reset my modem and reconnected with my Desktop. While on it, I tried to connect my Laptop to the router once again as well. It worked for a moment, but then kicked my connection entirely, which also kicked off my Desktop's connection.

I reset my modem once again in desperation to see if it was just a fluke, but the problem persisted. When my Laptop tries to connect to my router, I often get a "Connected With Limited Access" message. Then from there it usually disconnects again.

As a final resort, I ended up doing a system recovery on my Laptop to see if that would remedy the cause. It did for a little while, but then the problem came right back. (I bought the Laptop 2 days ago and h... Read more

I installed Windows 10 last year and had to uninstall it due to wi-fi connectivity dropping.   Searching the internet, this seemed to be a frequent problem and Lenova did not support Windows 10 for the Y510P and did not provide drivers. I really liked windows 10 and would love to go back to it.    Is anyone running it, and how did you resolve the wi-fi connectivity issue?    I see on the Lenova Website they still don't list Windows 10 for this model.    Too bad.  Makes me really dislike Lenova products when they don't support OS upgrades.

So, my y510p is having really anoying problem.  Sometimes computer works fine (really rarely) but usually it just doesnt start. I need to press powerbutton atleast 50 times until it finally start, and when it starts the screen is just blinking black and keys are blinking too, the problem becoming more general when it gets "cold" (Cold = normal indoor temperature 22 celsius) it also takes ages to get windows screen I have already visited warranty with my laptop and it was there 1.5 months, and they changed keyboard (why?!?!) and send it back, they said that they run some tests without any problems. Then i got my computer back, NOTHING CHANGED, same problems and all, what should i do?!  I have already soft-reseted, reseted bios and reseted whole system, nothing works!  Could you please be in touch with the store i bought it from, because I want my money back for not-working laptop worth 1200e in my country. They said that i need to send my computer back to warranty, for another 1.5 month journey (what is over what they promised, they said 10-15 workdays)  PLEASE HELP ME! anything but not another warranty trip! I also have very good video of the problem if you want me to send it to you.  My model is the one with 750M and 24gb ssd cache.

Hello, My Lenovo (end 2013 model) is dead. When I push the power button, nothing happens. I have checked the power supply - it is OK. Black screen, nothing happens. I have tried to connet to external screen. Nothing.Since I have seen that there are many postings regarding similar issue, is there a Lenovo action to fix this?

A:Overclocking GPU and CPU in y510p

If you use the Intel Xtreme Tuning utility you can adjust the multipliers but that is all. The CPU already runs way to hot (and throttles as a result) so overclocking it will only make it worse. I did the opposite and undervolted mine so not only does it run cooler but it doesn't throttle anymore so it actually runs faster then a stock one.
