Dell XPS12 messed up during BIOS update

Q: Dell XPS12 messed up during BIOS update

Hi all, yesterday I tried to update my Dell XPS12 (9Q33 mid 2013) BIOS to the last version (A08). During the installation, the laptop remained stuck in "EC programming" at 50%..I waited two hours but nothing changed and my PC was unusable: completely blocked, no keyboard,no touch and even the windows clock was blocked.
So, as I read in a lot of BIOS-related threads, I removed the AC adaptor and let it discharge completely..some users resolved with this workaround, and their PC's worked well after.
Unfortunately, my XPS12 doesn't want to power up anymore..I also tried to put the .hdr file of the BIOS in a USB stick and tried to power up with "end" button pressed. It powers up and the fans are working, but nothing happens then..Am I using the wrong procedure to repair the BIOS?

Thanks in advance,

Fabio

A: Dell XPS12 messed up during BIOS update

Good day ,
To help me resolve this issue I would ask your assistance by performing these troubleshooting steps,
1)Remove all the peripheral components from the system .2)Disconnect the charger from the system ,battery from the system and perform the power drain test on the system .
3)Plug in the charger back and use F2 key to get into BIOS then use F9 key to reset the BIOS to default settings.
4)If you are unable to get to the BIOS page or if there are any concerns do reply to this post with the service tag of the system (sent via private message ) so that I can look into the specifications of the system to assist you better .
Awaiting your reply .
Have a great day ahead !
Kindest Regards ,

Laptop is stuck in " preparing automatic repair" and never completes  process . Unable to access recovery partition. Purchased Recovery USB key from Dell and booted to USB recovery key. Got the " Loading Files"  message  and then the Windows logo and the rotating circle   . It stays in that mode for hours with no change., Could someone please help. Had a session with Dell technical support but they had to issue a refund  after they could not solve the issue. Diagnostics came up  good.

I MAY HAVE TO reinstall Windows unfortunately as I can't reclaim ownership of my C drive, though can access files on it. (Screenshot)- trying to find workround.
If I can't recover ownership and have to reinstall Windows (don't think Dell came with a Win8 b\ up disc), would I then have to pay to upgrade back to Win 10, now we're out of free period??

Sent my Dell XPS12 away under warranty having been led to believe Dell would replace the screen.
The monitor still has image retention problems & it turns out Dell didn't replace the screen !! They are now saying I'll have to pay for this as I'm now out of warranty.
I'm extremely disappointed in the way they have handled my case - any suggestions ?

Hi all,

a couple of days ago I was working on my Dell XPS 12 using only battery and then suddenly it went black. No way to restart it. Arrived at home, plugged into the socket and it was all ok, but it is only working with socket connected.
I noticed that battery now is always at 79% and not moving at all. I thought that I need a new battery but the weird think is that USB 3.0 that I used for charging smartphone, is now working only when the computer is running: even if socket is connect, with computer off, is now not anymore charging.
I am in the doubt that the problem is not the battery but something more serious, obviously I do not want to buy a £85 new battery to test it.. Any help is appreciated. Thank you much.
Best regards,

Stefano

About six months ago, I upgraded the hard drive for my Dell Inspiron 2200 from the original 25 GB to a Western Digital 120 GB. Two weeks ago, the drive failed and I returned the drive to Western Digital for replacement. Today I received the replacement drive and Western Digital has sent me a 250 GB drive. My problem is that the original BIOS (1.10 A03) supports a maximum drive size of 120 GB. I've checked Dell's website and as far as I can determine, none of the BIOS updates address a larger hard drive. Can anyone verify that I am correct about this? I can't email Dell about it, since my warranty has expired. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

So after installing Windows 10 I decided to update my drivers and one of them was the "BIOS Update" after a while the update stopped at "sending the update image to FW for verification" and it's stuck on 3%. I'm not a computer wizard so your help is appreciated. Also if you're wondering , I'm using the Dell Inspiron 3847.

A:Dell Inspiron BIOS Update

Bios updates require special installation and must be done alone. It cannot be done with other drivers. Bios updates should be done before updating to win 10 not after. Use caution updating bios since it can brick your computer.
You should not be updating the drivers yourself. Go to Dell Drivers and downloads and let the scanner tell you what windows 10 drivers you need--

Please remove the service tag from your post. Consider it to be personal info and you don't share it in open forums like this.
If you tried clearing BIOS by removing the battery and pressing / holding the power button for at least 10 sec, then your motherboard is probably bricked and will need to be replaced...

I went to the Dell product page for my computer - Dell XPS 8500, and ran the scan to check for updates.  3 updates, one of them for BIOS.  I ran the updates and initiated the BIOS update.  Midway through it appeared to get hung up and my machine froze.  I left it for an hour, came back and still no luck.
So I rebooted the machine and of course now it won't boot up.  I have power and can hear the fan, but no lights on the box and no screen input.
Looking though the manual and on this forum, I've tried resetting the BIOS jumpers, and removing the CMOS battery.  When I rebooted I saw lights on the box this time but it shut down after 30 seconds, and now back to the same problem.
From what I read on this forum I'm SOL unless I buy a new motherboard.
Just thought I'd check if anyone had any other suggestions.  If not, where can I get  a new motherboard for this?  The product page for my model doesn't list it as an option...

Thanks for your help!
Jason

A:Failed BIOS update - Dell XPS 8500

When did your warranty expire? If it expired less than 6 months ago, you might be able to get Dell to fix it, assuming they can get the board. They had a policy to replace a board -one time only- if it failed a Dell BIOS update within 6 months after the end of warranty. I don't know if that policy still exists.
Those are all different revisions of the same motherboard. I don't know what the differences are. They could be as simple as a different supplier for one of the components on the board all the way up to a change in the circuit layout.
Maybe Dell Spare Parts can tell you about the differences among the 3, or at least tell you which is the most recent revision,  even if they don't have the boards available...?
All three support the H77 chipset which is a key issue.
Look at your motherboard for the sticker to see what version you have now. If you can't find out about specific differences, you may want to get one that's the same version, assuming it's one of the choices available.
You should look elsewhere if Impact doesn't have the revision you want and/or for price comparisons. And always ask if the board is new, used, refurbished and about the warranty.

Hello guys, I'm new to this forum. And I hope I find a solution here.

It all started when I was updating drivers and came across updating the BIOS on my working Dell XPS 400. After Updating it, the BIOS was flashed. Once it rebooted a Post showing came up and at the bottom it said "BIOS updated successfully. AFTER that the computer made a total of 6 long beeeeeeeps with no display, monitor light is orange not green. So I shut down the computer and try to turn it on...it turns on for a half of a second and powers down...after 3 seconds it turns on...however no Display...no light on the keyboard or mouse..I just get those 6 long beeeeeeps one after the other.

I tried the following:
-removing battery for 30secs=Did not work
-removing battery for 30mins=Did not work
-Clearing the CMOS, moving the jumpers from 1/2 to 2/3=Did not work

I was read some similar problems and most say the Mobo could be dead. How could a simple BIOS update cause this. There has to be a solution. Anyhow I yet have to try removing the RAM, Vcard, any other attached hardware inside to see what happens. I cannot hit any keys on a keyboard that does not respond aswell..so that holding the insert key=Did not work

Hello,

Have a Dell desktop, XPS 8900.

A pop up presumably from Dell says it wants to "update" my System BIOS.

Sounds scary.

Isn't the BIOS the complete "guts" of the OS ?
Whys should an update be necessary ?

Should I do it ?

Thanks,

A:DELL Wants To Update My System BIOS: Questions On, Please ?

The BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is the chip that controls your system during boot up until it is "transferred" to the OS itself.
(That's a nutshell description, but should suffice here).

It is not the OS, but the SW "Guts" of your computer (Motherboard).

Whether or not to upgrade:

First, what does the update correct? They should list that info, or link to it.

In general, I'm the type to always update the BIOS if a new firmware is released, that said though, my mainboard has three separate BIOS's that I can switch to, so if one is borked by an update, or changes I make, I can go back to the original (I leave one on the original for that purpose).

If all is well on your system, you do not have to perform the update at all, and that may be the best advice I can give you, especially if you are questioning it to begin with, but if you are willing to do it, depending on what it may change for your system, it may be worthwhile.

I'll review it and post later, or others may chime in as they see fit.

UPDATE: I checked the Dell site for your system, but don't see an update for today, that's not to say anything malicious is going on, but can you give more details on the pop up?

What version it wants to update you to? Etc.
You could also boot into your BIOS and give us the version you are on, if you are several versions "behind" the most current one, it may also be beneficial to do it, again depending on what I outlined above.

Hi,
Any advice?
I have a 9010 SFF that was working fine, except that it would not install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.  Repeatedly, about 30% through the update it failed with a BSOD. I tried several times.
Somewhere I read that the BIOS might need updating so I headed over to DELL support.  I let the website automatically detect my system and it found a recommended BIOS update, version A24.
I initiated the BIOS update from the website and it seemed to run successfully but when the PC rebooted it hung half way through POST.
On a second attempt to start the machine - nothing - no display, no light, just will not start.
I tried clearing the NVRAM as indicated on the DELL website here: www.dell.com/.../SLN284985
I tried both the RTCRST jumper method and the battery removal method.
The result - it now continuously reboots but still no POST, no display, nothing.
I should add that during the original BIOS update, the PC had a Quadro 600 graphics card and a LSI 9200-8e SAS adapter card inside. They had both been working faultlessly and were removed when I tried to reset the BIOS NVRAM.
Any suggests on what next to recover my "bricked" desktop?

I just got a used M4600, and the currently installed bios is A08. When I try to update to A16, it restarts, says it's updating firmware, but fails at 0%. It gives no reason, and no error code as far as I can tell. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

A:Bios update failed - Dell Precision M4600

That is NOT the issue! There is nothing wrong with the M4600 motherboards per se.
Everybody has been trying to find why when trying a BIOS upgrade, the system immediately fails with a basic "BIOS Update Failed" and no specific error code or more explanation. The answer is in the PDF document below - that is the message displayed when BIOS authentication fails!
You just have to look up the Dell Signature Firmware 'feature' that was introduced into a number of laptop incl the M4600.  Download PDF doc. That was a feature introduced per NIST requirements.
In a nutshell, they changed the way BIOS authenticates a BIOS file before it will use it to update the BIOS & EC firmware. The M4600 is in the list of "Legacy Systems" where this was introduced. Basically, these systems did NOT have the Signature Firmware when produced.
Version A04 introduced this feature. After you install that, you will have an option to turn the Signature Firmware requirement On (default is Off). Once turned On, it can NOT be turned off!
The problem starts in BIOS ver A08. Something in the code is wrong. Because on some M4600s it updates the BIOS AND Activates the Signature Firmware requirement. After that, the system will NOT authenticate ANY other BIOS versions so you will NOT be able to upgrade past version 8!
I manage many, many systems for a company. I am currently sitting on 33 (yes, that many) M4600 with that exact same situation!

No -- 5G is more than enough free space for a BIOS flash.  Is the system failing to recognize the AC adapter (F2 at powerup to check)?
If it is, the BIOS won't flash - this is a hardware problem a BIOS update won't fix -- either the adapter, the DC jack or the mainboard is bad.

Solution fo recovery bios Dell N51101. Download the latest firmware from the Dell support2. Save the exe and create a shortcut with the following parameter: " /writehdrfile"3. Start the created shortcut and it will create a n5110a11.hdr file rename the file to N5110.hdr4. Create a shortcut exe file with the following parameter: " /writeromfile"5. Start the created shortcut and it will create a n5110a11.rom file rename the file to DQ15A11.rom6. Copy both file "N5110.hdr" and "DQ15A11.rom" to a FAT formatted pendrive's root folder7. Remove the charger and Battery from the laptop8. Plug In the pendrive9. Press & hold END10. Connect the charger (still hold END)11. The notebook starts automatically and shows the recovery screen12. Press enter and wait until finish the flashing13. Press esc to restart14. Hopefully problem solved

Hello,
So as it says in the title i have a 4 years old Inspiron 7720, and for the larger portion of that period of time it worked like a charm.
However lately it started doing some quirky things.
About two weeks ago my GPU (GeForce GT 650M) just disappeared from my Device Manager. I tried updating my GPU drivers, updating Windows (10) but it didn't seem to change anything. So i did some digging and found this: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19498450
Apparently I'm not the only one who encounterd this problem and there is a solution.HOWEVER, whenever I try to flash my BIOS an error pops up which reads: "ERROR 105 - Command line error! Status = 105."
I searched and found more users that experienced this problem, but the only solution I managed to find was reinstalling the OS, which is quite a drastic measure.
Is there any other way to fix this error?Thank you

It appears your BIOS may need to be updated.  What is the current version you're using? You should update them in order without skipping to the highest first.  Here's some information that may be helpful.

Hi,
I have a new XPS 13 (Service tag 64K2KC2 ePSA Build 4304.07) that I have only had since the 16th of this month.
All has been fine until a couple of hours ago. A Dell message popped on the lower right hand corner to of the screen to tell me there was a Dell bios update. I selected to install the bios update and now the laptop will not boot.
I get the Dell logo and then a plain blue screen.
Any ideas how to recover the system?

Thanks,

Hello and Thanks in Advance.

I am experiencing BSOD crashes and a buggy driver could be the culprit. Dell recommends updating the BIOS prior to the drivers.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/982135-learned-source-problem-bsod-but.html

I checked Dell's website and the current BIOS for my machine is A08 and my system at present is A05, so maybe this should be done anyway.

The BIOS update is just a .exe file.and its description is "Dell Computer Flash BIOS Upgrade."

I am afraid to run the BIOS update in "normal mode" because of these persistent crashes. Who knows what state my computer will be in if it crashes/freezes during a BIOS update.

My computer runs fine in "Safe Mode." Would it be OK to update my BIOS through Safe Mode so that I don't have to worry about my computer crashing in the middle of the update? Does the computer care if this is done through safe or normal mode? Should I log in as an administrator to do this also?

If anyone has any advice, I am all ears. Thanks!

Chris

I replaced the hard drive in my Dell Dimension E521, with a new 320GB (non Dell Specific) WD unit, and loaded Windows 7 Pro (again, non Dell specific version). The old hard drive was bad.

I downloaded the 1.1.11 BIOS update (http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDeta...) to a bootable USB flash drive. When I boot the computer off of the flash drive, it comes up with the C: thing and does nothing else.

Am I supposed to type something in there, to get it to update the BIOS or access the file on the flash drive?

I'm kind of new to this stuff, but learning...

I want to update the BIOS, to be able to install the AMD Athlon 64 X 2 6000+ processor. The current version is 1.1.6.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

When will Dell enable Intel Speed Shift via a BIOS update? All the BIOS update requires is requires is writing 1 to MSR 0x770!
Speed Shift was fully supported by Intel and Microsoft in 2015 (1 year ago!). It makes the CPU much more responsive (particularly in gaming and real-time tasks) and costs nothing.
In the meantime, anyone can run software manually to enable Speed Shift but you need to relaunch the software every time your computer sleeps or turns off, so that is inconvenient. But the boost in performance is worth the effort.
I have manually enabled SpeedShift via software such as ThrottleStop or just writing 1 to MSR 0x770.
Dell - can you get Speed Shift into the next BIOS revision?!?!

Hi Dell fans,  just hoping for a bit of direction with this issue:
I have an inspiron 7535 laptop that has started powering off after about 30 minutes of use.  no warning, no graceful shutdown, just straight to power-off.  I've cleaned and serviced it, the normal dell heatsink paste was dry as a nuns hip flask, so that's been renewed and and it's cooling just fine, but i dont think that is the problem.  Mainly because you can turn it straight back on and continue working for another period of time without any need for a cool-down.

My gut instinct is saying BIOS issues.  It's currently at versions A05 31/Oct/2013 and the latest from the support is A13 Release date 15 Jun 2015 (Last Updated 02 Aug 2015) however i cannot get this to install.
If I install within windows (10 x64)  it runs the extractor and flashed up a command window too fast to read the error. and I cannot find any logs it might create.  the command line options dont do anything.  every version does the same thing back to A06.  I seem to see something about intel in the message but cannot really read it in full.
i've also tried booting off a freedos disk and trying all versions too.  this extracts okay and gives error 8743: unknown or unsupported platform, cannot locate hardware platform identification this program cannot be run on the current plaform BIOS version too old please use the latest BIOS to flash.

I recently experienced a permanent battery failure on my Dell Inspiron 5548 laptop, and it can now only work while plugged in. The advice I found after perusing online would be to update BIOS. I've gone to Dell Support, had the site detect my Service TAG, and downloaded the manual BIOS update file(s). However, when I try to click on the new program, it brings me to this thing called "Insyde", which A.) asks for an ID and version and B.) won't work at all anyways since it says my battery needs to be at at least 10% for BIOS to be flashed. Now, I can't charge my computer at all since the battery is fried, since I'm basically running on electricity.
Not only am I unsure if a BIOS update will even fix my battery failure issue, but I can't even test it.

Hi everybody, and thank you in advance for the help.
I explain the problem: after the update of the BIOS to the version 1.2.2, the laptop rebooted and showed the following message:

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM.
No Boot Device Found. Press any key to reboot the machine

I used ePSA diagnostic and the tests were all OK, then I tried to restore the default settings in the BIOS, but nothing changed.
Has somebody any advice to solve the problem??

Thank you again,

Can anyone email me the bios .bin file for this motherboard? (not the file from shuttles site but the old bios file ai61s017.bin so I can flash it using my eeprom burner)

Or at least tell me how to extract the .rom from the exe file shuttle sends

If I get the rom file I will be able to revive this nifty old 750!

Resolution: Dell Inspiron 5459/5559/5759 BIOS Update - Will not boot after update
"No boot drive found", "PXE... Media test failure"
If you updated from 1.0.x to 1.1.5 (or other) and find yourself scratching your head in a panic that your system won't boot up, reboot and press and hold the F2 key when you see the Dell logo (shortly after restart). When the bios settings page opens, click restore settings to default, save, and then exit. Your system should boot to windows now :-)
If you don't care about default Keyboard LED brightness or Fn Lock key default status, disregard the following:
After your system restarts into windows, restart and repeat to enter bios. There are some minor settings that change -- They are minor and don't affect performance.  Under System Configuration, Keyboard brightness changes from dim to bright. Under Post Boot, Fn lock key changes to unlocked.
Have a nice day. Hopefully if you're reading this you already figured that out on your own.

Hello to the BleepingComputer community,First of all I'm sorry I haven't finished some of the steps from the Preparation Guide. It's because these steps require a reboot (e.g. Step 6: Disable your CD Emulation Software - DeFogger will ask me to reboot the machine), and I have a bad feeling about the question if it is safe to reboot in my situation: I'm not sure if I have a type of malware which is ready to infect the BIOS - if it is so, then it could infect it much easier during the reboot process.- If there is a good way to find out what is the problem (and fix the BIOS threat part if it really is present) without rebooting / shutting down this PC, or at least without booting from this hard drive (which I feel is probably infected), then please tell me what should I do.- If you know a place / forum where I can get a specialized help for this (seemingly BIOS-malware related) situation, please tell me where I could go.- If there is no way to move forward, I'll go ahead and risk the reboot, and follow the other steps (steps 6 to 10) in the Preparation Guide, no problem.I kindly ask you to please read below the details of the problem as it occured to me, and the things I have tried so far.The PC is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core BE-2350 2.1GHz, Motherboard Biostar TA690G AM2 (with AWARD BIOS), 4GB RAM, 200GB SATA HDD, and an ASUS EAH4870 card added a few years ago. It's with WinXP SP3, AVG Free 2012, (standard) Windows Firewall, and it's behind a router.I ... Good Evening All,

I having a problem with my Dell Latitude D610.

I went to update the BIOS and it said that the battery is not installed despite the laptop running solely off of battery power!

I have ran the dell device diagnostic and device manager and no issue appears to be with the battery. When you check the battery info in the BIOS settings it says the batteries are not installed and also when you log into XP it constantly says running off of AC power even when its not plugged in!

Any one got any ideas what could be causing this and how it can be solved?

Thanks Nick

A:Dell Latitude "battery not installed" preventing BIOS update

It may be referring to the CMOS battery which is wired to the computer beneath the keyboard. The battery can be replaced for $8.95 to $29.95 depending on where you purchase...

But regardless, you do have a problem that must be resolved. The D610 has been one strange little irrelevant problem after another... but you cannot afford to irritate it and have that mysterious unremovable password appear as it has on so many D610 and D620 Dells.

A:installing OSX on XPS12?

There is no legal way to do this.  Any installation of OS-X on non-Apple hardware is a violation of the Apple license agreement -- and discussion of violating license agreements here is also a violation of the terms of service of the Dell forums -- which can get you a warning (or banned).

If its just the display, how about on an external monitor?
Please check in safemode as well .
Have you tried updating video drivers ??

Hi,
I would really appreciate some help/advice with the following, as I`m pretty much at my wits end:
I attempted to install a second harddrive into my pc, something which I`ve done before in other pcs without too much trouble. After swapping the order of the four drives (two hdds, plus a cdrom and a cdrw) around till they all were seen by windows, and in the order that I wanted, I turned the pc off (cant quite remember why, it was over a week ago), went and ate. When I switched it back on it wouldn`t boot, so I got the cmos screen up, and checked that everything looked as it should. It did, so I tried booting again, and it would hang each time, the only way I could get out of the hang was to pull the plug out. So I did this maybe a dozen times, then had the "bright" idea of resetting the cmos jumper on the mobo. Nothing drastic happened, good or bad, so I reset the clock/date made sure the hdd settings were set to "auto", and then exited. It hung again, so I pulled the plug, and then Nothing. The fan comes on, and the light, but that`s it. I have an AOC monitor that turns itself off onto standby mode if it dosn`t get a signal, which is what happens when I plug it in now. I`ve tried disconnecting all drives and just running it with ram, and graphics (it`s onboard, not a seperate card), but still the monitor switches to standby, giving a "no signal or cable disconnected" message first. There`s no beeps, no floppy boot if I connect the floppy. Jus... Read more

hmmm... you should get SOMETHING with just the CPU plugged in... even with the memory pulled out.

Your system might have died, and sticking in RAM into it might have damaged your "old" memory... speculating. I or anyone else wasn't there... and don't know anything about your hardware.

Try only this when powered up: CPU ONLY. no drive cables getting power or data to the board. Just the CPU, not even the memory - you should still get POST, if its still alive. (also, reset CMOS again too. unplug power - change cmos jumper for a few seconds then back to normal, replug power cord, press power button).

I didnt read the Important note posted on the page before i clicked "Yes I would like to try and my own risk" Button. heres what it states.

Important! In order to flash the BIOS/Firmware safely, please make sure to close all running applications in your system before flashing. (Including Outlook, ICQ, Anti-Virus application, etc…)

So Yea. I didnt read that. and After I let it do that and give me and error half way through I think. But anyways I had remebered I had left Norton antivirus on. So now whenever I go back to the Msi.com.tw site and click that try at own risk button.. it restarts my computer now. My fans have sped up and make more noises. not to mention it did ask me if i wanted to backup bios on a floppy. and well... when i Build this computer. I wasnt so smart about buying one of those to put in.. I forgot all about it. So no backup on floppy disc. Now My question for you is How do I fix this? Get a new PSU? I mean it sounds with my ears like it is just dieing after I did that. and I read somewheres it does something to your PSU and restarting. Or is there a alternative way to load my old bios back to normal? Please help. This is killing me. My mom bought me a new graphics ... Read more

Greets,

I just recently changed something with my bios and now my comp doesn't boot up at all. Not getting any power to the keyboard anymore, the monitor doesn't display ANYTHING, no post tests or anything. I'm a complete newb when it comes to tweaking bios so I probably shouldn't have been messing with anything there in the first place, but I guess that's obvious now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Messed with my bios and now it won't boot, no post...

If you have the motherboard or computer instruction manual, find out how to reset the BIOS by using the jumper on the motherboard. If you can't find that, unplug the computer then remove the battery from the motherboard and replace it after five minutes. :grinthumb

systemax tiger amd athelon 1700+XP Processor - I deleted wrong files couldn't start at all. I do not have recovery disks for this computer so I Tried recovery disks from my other computer which is an T2692 E Machine running XP. It got me a screen but I could not re-install win XP. I finally managed to reformat C: and installed an old copy of Win98 but not working properly. Still can not install my XP - get the following error "Micro Tech Error 3E6H setup can not continue". Win 98 is not working correctly. The first screen I see that shows Windows 98 is completely black on top half of screen but bottom is correct. It then does go to the desktop with icons but If I go to control panel and system it gives me error to shut down.
I may have screwed up the bios also as I kept trying different things. Is there somewhere I can look and make sure all the bios settings are where they should be.
Motherboard # is GA-7vTXE+KT266A DDR Motherboard
Have I messed up too badly or can all my problems be corrected? i would appreciate any help, I have been working on for two days with not much luck.

A:deleted files & Messed up bios

You can Reset your Bios to all Default Settings using the Jumpers on the Main Circut Board.

Usually JBat 1 Jumpers but check your manual.Otherwise take out the battery for 15-20Mins and Reinsert.

Make sure you have the power completely disconnected from the mainboard.
Take out the Power Lead from the Power Supply Unit.
Make sure you earth youeself first before touching componants inside the Box....keep touching the metal on the PC Box.

Hello , I have a Dell Inspiron 530 running Windows Vista Home. I am trying to access the system BIOS and it has a red password log in screen. I tried to guess and enter several log in passwords including  the word DELL and none of them worked. I didn't want to enter too many wrong passwords because I didn't know if the system would lock me out. Can anyone help me by pass the BIOS log in password or some how disable it ? What is the difference about these two options (BIOS Defaults vs. Factory Settings) please?

I have a dell inspiron 5160 and i had a problem with it and shipped it to dell to fix it cuz it had a power problem and they fixed that. So they just mailed my lap top back and so i turned it on and it was working fine and beginning to load up but then the screen turned blue and had an error and it said that system32/drivers/ntfs.sys was courrupted. So then i quickly shut off my computer and treid to restart it but ikept getting teh same error message. So i looked online on how to fix this and they said to put in the XP cd and click repair. So i put the cd in and it began to load and it said loading debugging something and it just stays on that screen. I left it to load for over 14 hours and nothing changed. Now when i start my laptop it just shows that dell screen and loads that white bar then the screen turns black. I can't go into safe mode or chose most current configuration. i can't do ANYTHING. Hooww the heck do i fix this??? PLEASE HELPP:

Strange issue. Trying to fix a boot-up issue. After a good cleaning, the Dell Laptop would still boot up to DELL logo 60% of the time. Checked boot priority in System Setup and #1 was set to Windows Boot Manager. Changed the order to OS, and it booted. After sitting for a while, the DELL logo would appear again, no waking it, hard reset, checked the settings, and Windows Boot Manager was back to #1.

After messing with it, did a RESET. Same issue is happening. DELL logo stuck at loading. Keep having to change boot order to get it to boot. Yes, I save options before exiting. Restored default settings in bios. hmmmmm. Do a clean install?? And what is the correct boot order anyway?

A:After RESET, Boot priority still messed up in BIOS

The PC does boot to windows boot manager...

But if you keep have issues - do a clean install and then install facory dell drivers..

I have reset the BIOS features, and realize that that was not a good thing to do, because now my secondary third and fourth ide are displayed as not installed under the CMOS features in BIOS. Only the Primary IDE master shows as installed (cd-rom). How do I get the rest to show up so my computer can boot up?

Hi all,
I have a spare computer from work, but I do not know the password to log in, and so would like to wipe it. Ergo, I decided to try and boot the computer using a USB thumb drive with Ubuntu on it, so as to wipe the windows partition on the hard drive and then install Ubuntu. The computer boots normally to the Windows XP login screen. When I press F2 or F12, there is no display output. I have tried this with a variety of monitors and with two D-SUB cables (one at a time). These are the Samsung LT27B551EW, LG 27EA63V-P and Dell Rev A00. None of them show either the Dell splash screen or the BIOS screen. I have tried pressing F2 and F12 at strategic intervals (every 2 seconds) but still there is no display output. I also know that I was able to access the BIOS on the same computer a few months ago, but I forgot which displays I used then - I had to wait for permission to wipe the hard drive.
I have also looked up this problem in a number of other places, and found that this is supposedly due to an incompatibility of some kind with the monitor. However, I am not sure as to how I might go about fixing this issue, as I do not have any other monitors or cables which work with the Dell - all my other cables are either HDMI or other sorts of cable which do not plug in to the Dell. If there is a way to use the hard drive and wipe it without accessing the BIOS I would also be grateful to hear about that too.

A:Dell Dimension 3000 skips Dell splash screen and BIOS

Try connecting the USB stick before you power the system on.
You can try this too:

Power off, and unplug power cord from rear of PC
Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
Reconnect power cord to rear of PC
Power on and immediately tap F12 a couple of times

I have the Dell Inspiron 518 desktop with 64 bit Vista, and attempted to update the BIOS to version 1.0.7 last evening.  I closed all open programs, disabled anti-virus, and ran the BIOS update as administrator.  The update began and asked if I would like to update from version 1.0.5 to 1.0.7, and I clicked on the update button.  The BIOS flash began by deleting the previous BIOS and then attempted to install the new 1.0.7 BIOS but produced an error message similar to "error writing BIOS to block," an the only option was to cancel the update.  I knew I did not have any BIOS installed at that point, but my computer was still operating so I made an additional attempt to re-download the 1.0.7 BIOS and re-install it.  No good, it would not even run now.  There was no turning back and no way to reinstall either the previous BIOS or the new one.  Eventually I tried to restart the computer, and it would not start.
Dell is sending a tech next week to replace the motherboard on this otherwise great computer that is only about two months old.
DO NOT upgrade the BIOS on a Inspiron 518 with 64 Bit Vista to version 1.0.7.  The upgrade does not work and will kill your motherboard.

A:Dell Inspiron 518 BIOS v1.0.7 64 Bit Vista DO NOT UPGRADE BIOS

No it happened to me too.  Dell is replacing the motherboard under warranty but I was told somewhat firmly not to update the BIOS unless advised by a technican.  In my defense the BIOS update was listed as "recommended" under the download section for this unit on the Dell support website.
I would recommend to avoid two phone calls (over 40 minutes each) to tech support and several days waiting for a new motherboard, not to update the BIOS at this time.
Thankfully it is being covered under warranty.

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone would be so kind to assist with a problem that suddenly started with my second computer (Dell Vostro 400)
Its running windows 7 home premium and all the sudden it now stops at the Dell bios version screen. It did this a couple times the lastfew days, but when I restarted it, it booted ok, but when I checked on it later then the computer was frozen again with a black screen.  I have borrowed another computer from work and swapped out the hard drive, and it works fine with the other computer (same hardware). So I dont think its the hard drive. Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

Cheers

The screen says "Strike F1 to reboot or F2 for utility." I press F1 to reboot so he could do whatever he needs but the F1 thing just pops up again. So i do F2 but im unfamiliar with Dell i don't know what to do with it. Anyone got any suggestion or a way for me to get passed these stuff. Thanks

I have an older Dell Inspiron 9200 notebook that has a serious graphics problem. I replaced the video card with a working one and the problem remains. As you can see in the photo there exists at least two wide vertical stripes and, mostly all black and white and a bunch of smaller vertical stripes. The problem is identical before and after the video card switch.
My question is this: Does this indicate that an entire LCD screen replacement is in order or can it be the much cheaper inverter board?
Edit: I also swapped out both ram modules and the problem remained.
Thanks for any suggestions folks.
Here is the screen pic:

A:Help! Dell Inspiron notebook LCD messed up

Looks like you need a new LCD panel. The inverter board operates the backlight and has nothing to do with what is shown on the display.

When accessing the Windows 8 Advanced Startup Options (ASO), I am expecting to see a menu option called Troubleshoot – see screenshot (from Microsoft).

..but when I access this screen on my brand new Windows 8 XPS12, the Troubleshoot menu item is not displayed – see screenshot.

This is contrary to standard Windows 8 functionality.
I would be grateful for any advice on getting access to the Troubleshoot menu of Windows 8 ASO. Thanks!

David.

1. On the Windows 8 Desktop, open the Charms Bar by moving the mouse pointer to the top right corner of the screen.2. Click on “Settings” and the click on the “Power” icon.3. Hold down the “Shift Key” and click “Restart”.4. Windows 8 will load the Advanced Startup Options.
Please let me know if the “Troubleshoot” icon appears.

A friend of mine was no longer able to get into Windows XP on her PC and wanted to save a lot of digital photos. So I took her PC, removed her HD and swapped it with my secondary HD. (My PC has a primary SATA drive w/ the OS and a secondary IDE drive for storage). When I turned on my PC, for some reason it booted off of her drive I had swapped in. I wanted to get online to do some troubleshooting so I removed her HD and put mine back in. That is when the "strike f1 to retry reboot, strike f2 to enter setup" error message starting occurring. I have reset my BIOS and cleared NVRAM. I believe I did this correctly because each time afterwards it would attempt the automatic IDE configuration. Anyways, the BIOS is not recognizing ANY of my drives (2 dvd drives, the primary sata HD, and the secondary IDE HD).

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

yikes, i just turned my Dell "Ultra Sharp" monitor on and out of the blue, the color is all wonky. it seems there is no red. i can only see blue/purple & yellowish (kind of neon/highlighter yellow).

i have no idea where to start trouble shooting. here's what i checked so far:

if i pull up the main monitor menu i can see red color on there. i tried different settings but it doesn't fix it.
i tried pressing the factory pre-set for the color and that didn't change anything either.

my useless roommate used the computer before i got home and he said when he was using it, it was fine.

any thoughts on what to check/try/test??? any help would be greatly appreciated. i'm not super knowledgeable but i can follow instructions or answer any questions. i could do a screen shot but i have no idea if it would show up how i'm seeing it.

thanks in advance!!!!

edit: i took a photo of my screen with my phone and put it on photobucket...hope this helps

I have really screwed up my computer --dell dimension 2400 – talk about a mess. I wanted to clean off the hard drive, so I tried to reinstall xp using a friend’s cd because the only xp cd I could find was an upgrade (from win98). I don’t know what I did wrong (or if the problem was with the cd), but setup got into a loop we could not get out of.

Since I had my xp cd to upgrade from 98, we tried to install win98. It did clean off the hard drive, but it failed to install completely and now the cd drive will not work. And when I click on IE, an error message “Msoobe” comes up and says it has perfomed an illegal operation and shuts down.

My brother also has a dell dimension 2400, and he thought there was a way to reset the computer to its original configuation. I tried the Control+F11 that he suggested, but the screen says it needs a device file to run that it cannot find. There is a line that reads
Vnetbios.vxd
Is this the missing file?

I can’t find the resourceCd that came with the 2400, but I have a ResourceCD from a dell dimension xps t800. I don’t know if it will work for a 2400. And it can’t work now because the cd drive won’t respond.

Does anyone know how I can fix this? It seems that every step I took made it worse. I need expert help. Thanks
