Dell Studio 540s desktop BIOS update for Windows 7, 32-bit OS.

Q: Dell Studio 540s desktop BIOS update for Windows 7, 32-bit OS.

I have a Dell Studio 540s desktop purchased in 2008 which originally had Windows Vista, 32-bit OS factory installed. I have since upgraded to Windows 7, 32-bit and when I recently attempted to update the BIOS after an error prompt, I found that Dell only provides updated drivers for Windows 7, 64-bit OS. Is there any way of updating my BIOS, the last version being 2009?

Currently own a Dell Studio 540s. I know that because I have a slim case that I need a low profile card. I also know that my current PSU isn't powerful enough to power the card I'm interested in(100w PSU). I come to you all for advice before purchasing so I know what I'm getting myself into and make sure that I'm not missing anything.

The card: Newegg.com - SPARKLE SX98GT512D3L-NM GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card

The PSU: Newegg.com - FSP Group Booster X5 450W Independent/Supplementary SLI Certified CrossFire Ready Active PFC Dedicated Multi.GPU Power

I know how to install the card, but I'd really like some help with the PSU part, as I have 0 experience with upgrading them(most of my experience is PnP at best). Dunno if I'm going to need adapters or anything like that, please help! Any recommendations for alternate parts or anything like that would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I ran into a series of non responsive programs and start up issues. I have been able to fix them up till now using the start up repair in vista. Currently, the repair is failing to solve the blue screen im getting at startup. The screen flashes to fast to read it.On attempt #4 on the startup repair.

I posted on the dell forums and the only suggestion they could give was to update the BIOS. I was successful in doing so, but it turned out useless.

I have ran a memory diag, and the scn disk things. Both came out clean or repaired from what I can tell, correctly.

Any suggestions?

Hi, I bought a Studio Slim 540s back in November 2009 and now I've decided I want to do a little gaming on it. However, it runs a bit hot and it doesn't have sufficient energy for a new card. I think I have a PSU that is at 300w.
I was looking at either a GTX 460 or ATI 5850. The 5850 is probably way too big for the case. So, I was thinking of replacing the case with something simple but effective. I like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119137&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-RSSDailyDeals-_-na-_-na&AID=10521304&PID=3136390&SID=
That case should be good enough, with perhaps adding a fan or two.

Now, on to my next problem. I'm keeping everything else in the Studio Slim at stock, the Quad Core, 6GB ram, etc. Only thing that is changing is the PSU and Graphics Card. However, I've heard Dell Mobos/PSU are proprietary and that makes the PSU hard to replace. I need around a 400w-500w PSU. What is compatible with the dell Mobo chipset? Help would be appreciated, thanks.
Some of my specs if it helps:
Mobo: Dell 0M017G A00 P45/P43 chipset
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300
Ram: Dual Channel 400mhz(DRAM frequency) DDR2 6GB
HDD: Western Digital 7200RPM 32mb Caviar Black
PSU: reads 10A 125v so I'm guessing its at 300w?

A:Replacing the PSU in a Studio Slim 540s

 deuce985
The Studio 540 Slim has a 250w power supply.
The power supply is a standard ATX format, but due to the constraints of the 540 Slimline case, it is a Dell proprietary unit, due to it's shape, size and wiring harness.
If the motherboard was installed in a standard ATX Mini/Mid Tower case, most generic standard ATX power supply units can be used, with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector, with or without the on/off switch. You should be able to buy a compatible power supply from either a local or online computer store.Note: You require a power supply with four SATA power connectors.

I have been having serious trouble keeping my system stable over the last few months. I had to format HDD and reinstall the OS a couple of times and also restore it to factory settings another couple of times. Today im unable to do any of those. I have no support left from Dell on the page they used to have for doing the restore to factory settings.. I read somewhere they had discontinued support last April 24. The instructions on site to do a Dell Factory Image Recovery is no longer available either. Today i tried to follow the advice on how to do both and I get NO FACTORY RESTORE OPTION. The WIN SETUP does not load and i get this error message >> Status: 0xc00000e9 Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred. and in Windows Boot Manager im given no options either and there the error code is Status: 0xc000000f Info: the boot selection failed cause a required device is inaccessible. This is driving me insane, i have tried to boot with the Re-installation CD that came with the PC. nothing doing. I tried to reboot with the "recovery disks 1 # 2" that i made at the beginning prompted by Dell which supposedly would haelp me boot in cases like this. Nothing happens. Tried the resource CD. Made an image recovery which says it has been done and saved on external drives i have.. but cannot or dont know how to use it for booting and/or re-installation purposes. When you get your system stable and running good use a backup image program, there are free versions that work really well.
Keep the backup file on an external HD and restoring is easy.

If you have a Seagate or Western Digital hard drive you can get a free version of Acronis, a very good image backup program, usually not free. You must have the hard drive in your system for these to work.

And if so can anyone fix it? Also, I don't know if this has anything to do with this or not but when i first started the computer it had two .exe files crash while installing windows. The .exes were called sprtstart64.exe and i cant remeber the last one completely but it also ended with start64.exe and I've already tried updateing the video driver, changing to a different monitor, and using the system recovery disk and nothing has worked so far so if anyone can fix this please help.

Did you update the drivers using those from Dell, or another site?

Which Windows 7? 32 or 64 bit?

left click "properties".

Is the computer new or pre owned / used / refurbished?

Did the problem begin right out of the box?

Have you contacted Dell? This system might be under warranty.

What happens if you boot directly to safe mode?

Here is what I sent through to Dell:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Description of problem.Earlier this week, I tried to update the bios of my laptop, by downloading the program from the Dell website. The flashing program had almost finished, when Windows froze entirely. I left the computer for 30 minutes, but with still no response, I was forced to unplug the AC and battery. Since then, the laptop does not respond at all to any input (power button, AC input, etc).Description of any troubleshooting steps you have taken.I looked online and found this article:http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/451601-bricked-xps-1645-help.htmlwhere the second post has instructions for fixing this sort of thing. I followed them, but it does not look to have helped. I got the BIOS file by running the BIOS program from the Dell website, and finding the temporary location it extracted the BIOS1.WPH file, and putting it on the USB.To get the laptop to power on into BIOS recovery mode (with the side LEDs turned orange), I had to hold down the end key, and then release it at the same time as pressing the power button. I did this with only AC power.I tried the process with 2 USB drives - one of them had an LED access light, which flashed for about 10 seconds total once I had pressed the end key + power button combo, but then no further access. I then left the laptop for sometime (more than 10minutes) and powered it off, and tried to boo... Read more

PROBLEM: Dell BIOS 1535_A06.EXE update utility hangs during BIOS flash process.

DESCRIPTION:

1. Open Dell BIOS 1535_A06.EXE update utility from saved location on desktop by right-clicking and running as Administrator.

2. Click [Continue] button on "Dell BIOS Flash" update utility dialogue box asking "Replace 'A05' BIOS with 'A06' BIOS?"

3. Click [Okay] in Shutdown Confirmation dialog box.

4. Computer shuts down, like normal ("Logging off..." screen, then "Shutting down..." screen).

5. Instead of powering down, the computer "hangs"--still powered on (exhaust fan and Media Strip buttons active, power button light on). The computer NEVER finishes the shutdown process and powers off.

If I force-shutdown the computer (hold the power button down for 5 seconds), the computer powers down, but when I restart it (push power button, wait for POST), the BIOS load screen still says Dell BIOS A05 under the POST test status bar.

In other words, because of this weird hang-up (not finishing the shutdown and hanging in a full-powered mode), the BIOS updated never activates.

This "hanging" issue also happens any time the computer automatically restarts itself, whether by command (choosing "Restart" from the Windows menu), or through a system process (installing new software that automatically calls the system into restart mode. EVERY TIME, it will hang in this weird powered-but-useless mode, never fully powering off.... Read more

My wife's Studio XPS 8100 Desktop (manufactured 01/04/2011) has been crashing, starting with a flickering screen.  The screen goes blank with a whitish-beige color and is unresponsive.  She turns it off and on, and it still stays asleep.  Holding the power/start button down for 30 seconds used to work for a while, but she no longer can recover her machine from a "deep sleep."  While booting, the computer makes a loud humming noise that is not present when it boots normally.  This was happening under Windows 7 Professional OS and has continued under Windows 10 OS.
Before, under Win 7 OS, the hard drive began to get slower and slower to the point I was afraid it was failing, and I replaced it along with updating drivers specified by Dell (see previous posts).  There was nothing available for the video card to update.
I read in the community forum that disabling (turning off) the monitor sleep state as well as the computer sleep state was a solution.  That seems to work as long as she never turns the machine off.  If the machine is turned off, as stated in the first paragraph, it takes more and more 30 second cycles to get it to boot normally.
Is there a solution for this problem?  What should I do next?

Thanks,
Creech Newsome

Hello people.
I've just discovered that my BIOS is version A00 that's probably been there since manufacture and would like to update it. The download of the last/latest version would appear to be A11, with the caveat being thus:
Product not tested for Windows 10 upgrade
Dell is not testing or developing Windows 10 drivers for this product. If you choose to upgrade, some features, applications, and connected devices may not work as expected.
As i did upgrade to Windows 10 a while back i'm concerned that this may not work and potentially wreck the laptop.
Has anyone tried this? or will it work?
Many thanks for your assistance.

A:BSOD Keeps Happening on Dell Studio 540 Desktop

Ok three things that i noticed right off the bat, the crash dumps are pointing to memory corruption as the prime cause so I would like you to run through this tutorial:

Memtest86+

let it run for at least 8 passes if you can more (best to let it run overnight) then post back the results.

The second thing I noticed was your BIOS is rather out of date I would check the manufacturer's website and see if there is an update

Code:
BIOS Release Date 08/25/2009
And the third is that you have the drivers for Daemon tools, which is known to cause BSODs If you still have Daemon tools installed uninstall it and then download and run this tool if the uninstall box is grayed out then the uninstall is complete if not click the uninstall button and let the tool do its job.

I have a Dell Studio XPS 435MT Desktop computer. It is running W7 on 64 bit with an I7-920 CPU. I am looking to upgrade the RAM from the current 6 GB it has installed.

It has 6 slots. Is the maximum capacity 12 GB or 24 GB.

It currently has 6 1GB sticks with PC3-8500 DDR3 1066MHz.

I also have tried successfully Two 2GB STicks of Kingston DDR3 1333, PC3 10600, 667 MHZ.

On Crucial it states:

DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-8500, DDR3 PC3-12800
Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-8500, DDR3 PC3-12800, DDR3 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 24GB
Slots: 6
Each memory slot can hold DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-8500, DDR3 PC3-12800 with a maximum of 4GB per slot.*

Does 4GB work in one Module or is the max 2GB per slot. What RAM configuration would work best? I hope someone can give me a few answers to my questions. Thanks.

HOWEVER, after successfully flashing the BIOS (or so it seems), Windows System Information shows the following:
BIOS Version/Date: Dell Computer Corporation A04, 10/21/2010
Reviewing the contents of the RAR compressed files reveal that they are exactly the same as the ones I downloaded in Feb 2013, with most files dated 3/17/2010.This is confusing, conflicting with the stated information on the page, and overall disappointing.Does anyone know whether there was an actual update to the BIOS on 7/3/2014 and, if so, where the updated file can be found?Thank you,

Hi all,

I have purchased a new XPS Studio from Dell which is due to arrive tommorow. Its a good machine for the money and since I havent bought a new machine in its entirety for over 10 years and recently got a new job, I thought I would splash out.

Its got 2*640GB Raid 0 Sata drives, a blueray burner, 4850 graphics card, i7 2.66ghz cpu and 3 years of dell sending me new parts in the mail if anything messes up. For the money I couldnt buy the separate components and SLI/Crossfire doesnt interest me. My upgrade path will be a new powersupply and a heavier graphics card at a later date.

Anyway on the customisation page I had a choice of 2gb, 4gb, 6gb and 8gb of Tri-channel DDR3. I decided to go for 8gb. I plan on running a few instances of VMWare Player to simulate 2008 servers and Vista machines so I can try out some things for work.

Problem is... that 8GB is 4*1GB sticks and 2*2GB sticks in 3 banks. But triple channel needs 3 sticks of the same type per bank? On looking again, Dell are offering the 2gb kit as "2GB Tri- Channel DDR3" which just isnt possible. How can you have 3 channels with 2 sticks. It appears they are doing magic tricks or the person who made the webpage doesnt know what he is selling?

I will see what happens tomorrow. If my memory configuration doesnt run in triple channel mode then I will be requesting a refund of the extra money i paid to have the 2GB sticks instead of a fifth and sixth 1GB stick and requesting the 1GB st... Read more

triple channel requires 3 banks. I have an MSI desktop that I built with 3 ram sticks for 1.5 gb that runs in triple channel. It's a rare configuration and not too many PC makers use it.

Hey, has anyone ever heard of this? I have a Dell laptop that told me it needed to update my video drivers, so I did and all hell broke loose. I couldn't run AVG, everything was bogged down and it took FOREVER to open folders or files. I tried restore it but all restores points were gone, and I tried using Dell CDs to restore the HD put it keep failing. I finally had to pull the drive out and hook it by USB to another system (also running AVG) and scanned it. It said I had only two virii, both Win32/Heur in the updated ATI drivers. After it scanned I used AVG on the desktop computer to quarantine the files and heal them. It told me it couldn't because they longer existed. Then when I tried to look at the contents of that partition, it was blank. When I put it back in the laptop, it tried to boot but fails saying no bootable media exists. Now multiple errors are popping up with other hardware on the system.

I hooked it back up to the desktop and I can still see the drive but no files? Any clues on what I've done?

I posted in the virus and malware forum but they said it looked like a windows issue.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Sorry I can't give any log files but they're just vanished...

Hi,
I have a new XPS 13 (Service tag 64K2KC2 ePSA Build 4304.07) that I have only had since the 16th of this month.
All has been fine until a couple of hours ago. A Dell message popped on the lower right hand corner to of the screen to tell me there was a Dell bios update. I selected to install the bios update and now the laptop will not boot.
I get the Dell logo and then a plain blue screen.
Any ideas how to recover the system?

Thanks,

Richard

I replaced the hard drive in my Dell Dimension E521, with a new 320GB (non Dell Specific) WD unit, and loaded Windows 7 Pro (again, non Dell specific version). The old hard drive was bad.

I downloaded the 1.1.11 BIOS update (http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDeta...) to a bootable USB flash drive. When I boot the computer off of the flash drive, it comes up with the C: thing and does nothing else.

Am I supposed to type something in there, to get it to update the BIOS or access the file on the flash drive?

I'm kind of new to this stuff, but learning...

I want to update the BIOS, to be able to install the AMD Athlon 64 X 2 6000+ processor. The current version is 1.1.6.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Hello and Thanks in Advance.

I am experiencing BSOD crashes and a buggy driver could be the culprit. Dell recommends updating the BIOS prior to the drivers.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/982135-learned-source-problem-bsod-but.html

I checked Dell's website and the current BIOS for my machine is A08 and my system at present is A05, so maybe this should be done anyway.

The BIOS update is just a .exe file.and its description is "Dell Computer Flash BIOS Upgrade."

I am afraid to run the BIOS update in "normal mode" because of these persistent crashes. Who knows what state my computer will be in if it crashes/freezes during a BIOS update.

My computer runs fine in "Safe Mode." Would it be OK to update my BIOS through Safe Mode so that I don't have to worry about my computer crashing in the middle of the update? Does the computer care if this is done through safe or normal mode? Should I log in as an administrator to do this also?

If anyone has any advice, I am all ears. Thanks!

Chris

Hi there,

I have a dell studio 1558 laptop with windows 7 home premium. I have an issue wherein windows 7 restarts itself. It does throw a BSOD but I can't capture/see that as it immediately restarts after that. I read somewhere in this forum that i should uncheck the option "automatically restart on system failure" in system properties. But i can't even do that because the system restarts even before I get the login screen.
Same behavior is seen in safe mode. I tried almost all the options that appear when you press F8 key while booting. Any assistance in resolving this is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

DO you have a copy of windows 7 DVD?
if so try this
Repair Windows 7 Using the Startup Repair Tool

If not

Have you tried restoring from the recovery menu?

you can backup your files using Ubuntu live CD

Hi,
I have a serious issue. I have just upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. The very first Windows update without even touching the keyboard will automatically download is the following troublesome one:
Realtek High Definition Audio Driver version 6.0.1.7535  This affects the sound over the external speakers as no sound thereafter. Before this download, the sound over the external speakers is normal and loud. I even used Microsoft's recommended  wushowhide.diagcab  I ran that tool. It caught the driver and HID the driver only for windows update to override it and there goes the hidden driver. The driver downloads again. I remove it from Add and Remove and restart and before u know it, within seconds, before u can think of another solution the driver is installed and the sound disappears again.
For Dell Studio XPS 435 mt, this is a big problem. Please help me get rid of this download once and for all permanently.
It you could e mail me on<ADMIN NOTE: Email id removed per privacy policy>
  I will be glad

My daughter has a Dell Studio 540 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and she's been asking me if it's OK to upgrade to Windows 10. Since I live several hundred miles from her I didn't want to tell her to go ahead until I had a chance to check things out and now I'm wondering myself what to do.

I fired up some Dell utility for drivers and updates and it came back with a message that said the Studio 540 had not been tested for compatibility with Windows 10 and if an upgrade was attempted things might not work. Of course that doesn't really mean they won't it only means that Dell hasn't tested anything and they're covering themselves just in case. Now The Windows Upgrade Icon is in her system tray and it says that the machine was tested and found to be compatible with no issues found so drivers might exist from Microsoft.

So, has anyone upgraded a Dell Studio 540? If so, what if any problems did you encounter?

A:Has anyone updated a Dell Studio 540 from Windows 7 to 10?

Microsoft is often provided with drivers not designed specifically for the computer, which means updating is risky. It probably will work, but you always run the risk of crashing, or small problems like it having a hard time coming out of sleep mode, etc.

If she really wants it, she can try it out, and revert back if it doesn't work in month provided to revert.

To remove the tray icon, do this: Get Windows 10 Icon - Remove from Taskbar in Windows 7 and 8.1 - Windows 10 Forums

About six months ago, I upgraded the hard drive for my Dell Inspiron 2200 from the original 25 GB to a Western Digital 120 GB. Two weeks ago, the drive failed and I returned the drive to Western Digital for replacement. Today I received the replacement drive and Western Digital has sent me a 250 GB drive. My problem is that the original BIOS (1.10 A03) supports a maximum drive size of 120 GB. I've checked Dell's website and as far as I can determine, none of the BIOS updates address a larger hard drive. Can anyone verify that I am correct about this? I can't email Dell about it, since my warranty has expired. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Can a low bios battery cause slow computer operation? I am getting a low battery warning when booting up which probably is the reason the computer is slower than dirt. Thanks

A:Dell desktop BIOS battery question

i'd be more inclined to blame something else on poor performance, because all the BIOS battery does is keep CMOS settings. it's a small, low-voltage, button cell battery that powers the chip socket. if you are experiencing slow performance, try defragging your hard drive and scanning for viruses. if the computer is taking it's time starting up, check your startup list and disable everything that's not necessary.

I know this is not strictly a Vista issue, but thought maybe someone would have an answer.

I have purchased a used PC (Dell 531S Desktop) from a National Rental company with Vista Home Premium installed.

I wanted to change the boot order in bios (CDROM before Harddrive) , but it asks for a password to enter bios. The Rental Company has no idea where this password comes from. There is nothing about it in the user manual.

I assume that Dell did this to keep rental customers from making major changes to the computer.

I can get around the issue by clicking F12 to the Boot Menu and have it boot from the CDROM. This works but it is a pain.

Any help finding or eliminating this password would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hello huffman and welcome to the forums

I would suggest that you should download the Hirens Boot CD:

Hiren's BootCD 14.1 - All in one Bootable CD ? www.hiren.info

Burn this file to a CD at a low speed using this:

InfraRecorder

Then boot into the CD

On this disc there is a tool called BIOS Cracker 5, you will need to use this to remove your password. Here's a tutorial:

A:Windows 7 not loading on Dell Studio 1535

It is strongly recommended to do a Clean Install rather than an in-place Upgrade which imports any corruption from the prior OS.

Clean Install Windows 7 Boot the Win7 DVD, select Custom install, use Drive tools to format before installing Win7. The DVD will see the prior OS at bootup to allow use of Upgrade version key.

If there was ever a time for a fresh clean install it is with the best OS ever.

If you must for some reason do an in-place Upgrade at this time, try running it with a Clean Boot procedure.

So after installing Windows 10 I decided to update my drivers and one of them was the "BIOS Update" after a while the update stopped at "sending the update image to FW for verification" and it's stuck on 3%. I'm not a computer wizard so your help is appreciated. Also if you're wondering , I'm using the Dell Inspiron 3847.

A:Dell Inspiron BIOS Update

Bios updates require special installation and must be done alone. It cannot be done with other drivers. Bios updates should be done before updating to win 10 not after. Use caution updating bios since it can brick your computer.
You should not be updating the drivers yourself. Go to Dell Drivers and downloads and let the scanner tell you what windows 10 drivers you need--

I just discovered that Dell has decided not to include my Studio XPS 8100 desktop for upgrades to Windows 10!  Why is this?  I have had Dell products for over 25 years and I have kept coming back because of my experience with Dell.  Unfortunately, this latest piece of news has just taken the wind out of my sails!  It appears that my only recourse is to by a new desktop!

A:Studio XPS 8100 = Why won't Dell support Windows 10 for this model?

The offer of a free upgrade from Win7/8.x to 10 comes from Microsoft, not DeLL.
Are you saying that DeLL has advised you that something in that system's hardware [software, or drivers] setup in not compatible with Win 10?   That's the only plausible explanation that comes to mind.
EDIT:   I believe some people have done so successfully... and hopefully one of them will reply here.

Hello all!

I wonder if anyone could help me shed some light on the best process for the above subject.

I currently have a Dell Studio XPS 435MT (Vista 64bit) running two HDD's in RAID 0 (as from factory) I need to install Windows 7 64bit and would like to also install it onto the new SSD I have bought (Crucial 128GB) as an upgrade.

Could I simply take the current HDD's out (after backing up essential data) to keep safe as backup plan and add the SSD into slot 0 and install Windows 7?? Then possibly add say a 1tb storage drive to the system later?

One solution someone has sent my way is to clone the two 500gb RAID 0 drives to a single 1tb drive then install Windows 7 onto the new SSD and have both drives on a multiboot? Could this work?

I have seen/heard many versions of how to go about this install but no real evidence of a true way?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Poke13

A:Dell Studio XPS 435MT - Installing SSD and Windows 7 64bit

It takes 3-500GB drives to give you 1.3TB of storage space because of formatting over-head. 2-500GB drives will be considerably less than 1TB. Keep the 2-500's in a single RAID array and set the SSD as a separate partition for Windows 7

I want to return my Dell Studio 1555 back to windows 7 from windows 10. I did not make back up DVD's of my original Windows 7 and now can't access the Dell Factory Restore function (F8, ctr F11). I do see the Recovery E drive, therefore assuming it is still installed and functional. I guess is installing windows 10 removes the ability to boot into the recovery partition and restore my dell. Is there anyway to restore the recovery function of my Dell Studio 1555 so I can restore back to original windows 7. Thanks for any information on this topic.

A:Returning my Dell Studio 1555 back to windows 7!

What's the exact "service tag" number and/or "express service code" number on that Dell Studio 1555 laptop?
That laptop has driver support only for Windows XP and Vista and 7.
It was not tested for Windows 10 and provides no drivers for it.

If you live in the U.S.A., the factory restore/system recovery disc kit for it should be available here.

I bought this machine in July 2010 and I have been having BSOD and Black screen issues ever since. I have been on the phone with DELL 4 times. Two times they had me run a hardware test and the test always comes back with no issues.

I have attached a DUMP file as well as a mini dump file from a recent system crash (BSOD.) When the machine goes Black and reboots, I get a mini dump, but no full dump file.

The Dell support folks are all over the map on this issue and have given me no satisfaction. On e time they told me it was a virus and they would charge me $129 to clean the machine. I am running a good virus scanner, and I am quite sure it is not a virus.

Another time, they told me to restore my machine to the original factory system, but I am reluctant to do that, since I have donwloaded a lot of software and customized the machine. I also have purchased and religously used the Dell Data Safe Local Backup premium package. The Dell support folks are clueless about the back up and rest... Read more

Hi all, yesterday I tried to update my Dell XPS12 (9Q33 mid 2013) BIOS to the last version (A08). During the installation, the laptop remained stuck in "EC programming" at 50%..I waited two hours but nothing changed and my PC was unusable: completely blocked, no keyboard,no touch and even the windows clock was blocked.
So, as I read in a lot of BIOS-related threads, I removed the AC adaptor and let it discharge completely..some users resolved with this workaround, and their PC's worked well after.
Unfortunately, my XPS12 doesn't want to power up anymore..I also tried to put the .hdr file of the BIOS in a USB stick and tried to power up with "end" button pressed. It powers up and the fans are working, but nothing happens then..Am I using the wrong procedure to repair the BIOS?

Thanks in advance,

Fabio

A:Dell XPS12 messed up during BIOS update

Good day ,
To help me resolve this issue I would ask your assistance by performing these troubleshooting steps,
1)Remove all the peripheral components from the system .2)Disconnect the charger from the system ,battery from the system and perform the power drain test on the system .
3)Plug in the charger back and use F2 key to get into BIOS then use F9 key to reset the BIOS to default settings.
4)If you are unable to get to the BIOS page or if there are any concerns do reply to this post with the service tag of the system (sent via private message ) so that I can look into the specifications of the system to assist you better .
Awaiting your reply .
Have a great day ahead !

Hello guys, I'm new to this forum. And I hope I find a solution here.

It all started when I was updating drivers and came across updating the BIOS on my working Dell XPS 400. After Updating it, the BIOS was flashed. Once it rebooted a Post showing came up and at the bottom it said "BIOS updated successfully. AFTER that the computer made a total of 6 long beeeeeeeps with no display, monitor light is orange not green. So I shut down the computer and try to turn it on...it turns on for a half of a second and powers down...after 3 seconds it turns on...however no Display...no light on the keyboard or mouse..I just get those 6 long beeeeeeps one after the other.

I tried the following:
-removing battery for 30secs=Did not work
-removing battery for 30mins=Did not work
-Clearing the CMOS, moving the jumpers from 1/2 to 2/3=Did not work

I was read some similar problems and most say the Mobo could be dead. How could a simple BIOS update cause this. There has to be a solution. Anyhow I yet have to try removing the RAM, Vcard, any other attached hardware inside to see what happens. I cannot hit any keys on a keyboard that does not respond aswell..so that holding the insert key=Did not work

I went to the Dell product page for my computer - Dell XPS 8500, and ran the scan to check for updates.  3 updates, one of them for BIOS.  I ran the updates and initiated the BIOS update.  Midway through it appeared to get hung up and my machine froze.  I left it for an hour, came back and still no luck.
So I rebooted the machine and of course now it won't boot up.  I have power and can hear the fan, but no lights on the box and no screen input.
Looking though the manual and on this forum, I've tried resetting the BIOS jumpers, and removing the CMOS battery.  When I rebooted I saw lights on the box this time but it shut down after 30 seconds, and now back to the same problem.
From what I read on this forum I'm SOL unless I buy a new motherboard.
Just thought I'd check if anyone had any other suggestions.  If not, where can I get  a new motherboard for this?  The product page for my model doesn't list it as an option...

Thanks for your help!
Jason

A:Failed BIOS update - Dell XPS 8500

When did your warranty expire? If it expired less than 6 months ago, you might be able to get Dell to fix it, assuming they can get the board. They had a policy to replace a board -one time only- if it failed a Dell BIOS update within 6 months after the end of warranty. I don't know if that policy still exists.
Those are all different revisions of the same motherboard. I don't know what the differences are. They could be as simple as a different supplier for one of the components on the board all the way up to a change in the circuit layout.
Maybe Dell Spare Parts can tell you about the differences among the 3, or at least tell you which is the most recent revision,  even if they don't have the boards available...?
All three support the H77 chipset which is a key issue.
Look at your motherboard for the sticker to see what version you have now. If you can't find out about specific differences, you may want to get one that's the same version, assuming it's one of the choices available.
You should look elsewhere if Impact doesn't have the revision you want and/or for price comparisons. And always ask if the board is new, used, refurbished and about the warranty.

Hello,

Have a Dell desktop, XPS 8900.

A pop up presumably from Dell says it wants to "update" my System BIOS.

Sounds scary.

Isn't the BIOS the complete "guts" of the OS ?
Whys should an update be necessary ?

Should I do it ?

Thanks,
Bob

A:DELL Wants To Update My System BIOS: Questions On, Please ?

The BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is the chip that controls your system during boot up until it is "transferred" to the OS itself.
(That's a nutshell description, but should suffice here).

It is not the OS, but the SW "Guts" of your computer (Motherboard).

Whether or not to upgrade:

First, what does the update correct? They should list that info, or link to it.

In general, I'm the type to always update the BIOS if a new firmware is released, that said though, my mainboard has three separate BIOS's that I can switch to, so if one is borked by an update, or changes I make, I can go back to the original (I leave one on the original for that purpose).

If all is well on your system, you do not have to perform the update at all, and that may be the best advice I can give you, especially if you are questioning it to begin with, but if you are willing to do it, depending on what it may change for your system, it may be worthwhile.

I'll review it and post later, or others may chime in as they see fit.

UPDATE: I checked the Dell site for your system, but don't see an update for today, that's not to say anything malicious is going on, but can you give more details on the pop up?

What version it wants to update you to? Etc.
You could also boot into your BIOS and give us the version you are on, if you are several versions "behind" the most current one, it may also be beneficial to do it, again depending on what I outlined above.

Hope I put this in the right place. Here goes...
So I updated my bios today from 1.7 to 1.A. When the system restarted it goes to Windows 7 with a black screen that says "C:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\desktop Refers to a location that is unavailable". From here I have all of the basic buttons but I cannot access anything. I get an error even trying to run regedit. My system ran fine before the bios update. The system setup is as follows:
50GB SSD with Windows 7 installed only
4x 500GB HDD in Raid0 with all user profiles and default save locations set to it.
2x External drives (not to important here just run Ubuntu and a spare drive)

When I set the system up I changed all of the registry settings so that windows automatically saved everything to the Raid0 drive. Everything is still on the drive as it has been unchanged but Windows fails to find the desktop settings now. How can I change this? I CANNOT lose any of the files so a wipe and rebuild are out of the question. I'm lost here fellas and could really use your guidance. Thanks in advance.
Edit: When I looked in the system profile folder there was no "desktop" folder there. I manually created one and got some of my shortcuts on the desktop back but everything is still missing. At system launch I edited all registry settings to point to drive D: as the primary. Maybe something changed there?

Hi,

Is this a hardware RAID0? If so, then check your updated BIOS to make sure it is still configured to use the RAID controller.

About a week ago, my computer started freezing up. It won't unfreeze and task manager won't work and I can't soft restart it. I have to press and hold the power button to reboot. Then it works okay for maybe 2 to 4 hours, then locks up again. And then I have to do the same thing.

I've run malwarebytes, it found a couple registry bugs, got rid of those. Rebooted, ran malwarebytes again, nothing found. Did a MS security essentials full scan and nothing was found.

Is there any hope of fixing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Flashing the BIOS with only 10% battery and no AC current is an invitation for making a brick. I recommend you do not attempt flashing the BIOS that way.Does the laptop currently boot to Windows or at least POST?Is the charger branded to the laptop? Did the charger ever work with this laptop?Has this battery previously worked in that laptop? How old is the battery?message edited by OtheHill

Hi,
Any advice?
I have a 9010 SFF that was working fine, except that it would not install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.  Repeatedly, about 30% through the update it failed with a BSOD. I tried several times.
Somewhere I read that the BIOS might need updating so I headed over to DELL support.  I let the website automatically detect my system and it found a recommended BIOS update, version A24.
I initiated the BIOS update from the website and it seemed to run successfully but when the PC rebooted it hung half way through POST.
On a second attempt to start the machine - nothing - no display, no light, just will not start.
I tried clearing the NVRAM as indicated on the DELL website here: www.dell.com/.../SLN284985
I tried both the RTCRST jumper method and the battery removal method.
The result - it now continuously reboots but still no POST, no display, nothing.
I should add that during the original BIOS update, the PC had a Quadro 600 graphics card and a LSI 9200-8e SAS adapter card inside. They had both been working faultlessly and were removed when I tried to reset the BIOS NVRAM.
Any suggests on what next to recover my "bricked" desktop?
Andy

OS: WINDOWS 8.1 64-BIT
i am having a battery problem so i am wanting to update my BIOS to troubleshoot it.
My current BIOS version is A05 (3-jan-13).  I want to update it to A14.
But i am getting ther error message 'allocate memory for security flash fail!'
The drive where windows is installed has only 5GB of free space.
Could it be becausr of this?

A:Dell Inspiron 15R 5521 BIOS update error.

No -- 5G is more than enough free space for a BIOS flash.  Is the system failing to recognize the AC adapter (F2 at powerup to check)?
If it is, the BIOS won't flash - this is a hardware problem a BIOS update won't fix -- either the adapter, the DC jack or the mainboard is bad.

Hi, I have repeated experience of failed BIOS firmware update on Dell e5570. More precisely the part
"Sending Intel (R) Management Engine Firmware Update" always hangs on 100% and never finishes.  The annoying thing is that laptop cannot be shutdown via power button (even with the long press) and I have to wait hours till my battery dies :-(
Im trying to update BIOS from 1.6.3 to 1.7.3. In the end, I have 1.7.3 BIOS version, but Embedded Controller stays on A07 instead of A11 so I got my PC into middle of versions :-( First broken thing I noticed is WiFi always turned off after wake from sleep or after startup.
Dell support, please help. I need new BIOS (and Embedded Controller) to resolve some NVMe and other issues with the laptop.
Thanks, M.

Hi
I have an old Dell E6410 Laptop, which i need to BIOS upgrade in orden to use my SSD disk.
I download, and I try to upgrade, which runs fine, but when it comes to the auto restart that should do the actual update, it will not auto restart...
I'll have to push the power button, and it starts with a not upgraded BIOS.
Does anyone know why auto restart is not working on the laptop?
I can't do a autorestart at all, i allways have to push the power button..

A:Dell E6410 auto restart after BIOS update

Hi,
Thank you for writing to us!
This could be an issue with the motherboard that could be faulty .
We would advised you to restore BIOS to Defaults and then run diagnostics on the system.
Kindly private message the service tag and email address.
Thanks
Robin

I just got a used M4600, and the currently installed bios is A08. When I try to update to A16, it restarts, says it's updating firmware, but fails at 0%. It gives no reason, and no error code as far as I can tell. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

A:Bios update failed - Dell Precision M4600

That is NOT the issue! There is nothing wrong with the M4600 motherboards per se.
Everybody has been trying to find why when trying a BIOS upgrade, the system immediately fails with a basic "BIOS Update Failed" and no specific error code or more explanation. The answer is in the PDF document below - that is the message displayed when BIOS authentication fails!
You just have to look up the Dell Signature Firmware 'feature' that was introduced into a number of laptop incl the M4600.  Download PDF doc. That was a feature introduced per NIST requirements.
In a nutshell, they changed the way BIOS authenticates a BIOS file before it will use it to update the BIOS & EC firmware. The M4600 is in the list of "Legacy Systems" where this was introduced. Basically, these systems did NOT have the Signature Firmware when produced.
Version A04 introduced this feature. After you install that, you will have an option to turn the Signature Firmware requirement On (default is Off). Once turned On, it can NOT be turned off!
The problem starts in BIOS ver A08. Something in the code is wrong. Because on some M4600s it updates the BIOS AND Activates the Signature Firmware requirement. After that, the system will NOT authenticate ANY other BIOS versions so you will NOT be able to upgrade past version 8!
I manage many, many systems for a company. I am currently sitting on 33 (yes, that many) M4600 with that exact same situation!

A:dell inspiron n5110 bios update failure

Solution fo recovery bios Dell N51101. Download the latest firmware from the Dell support2. Save the exe and create a shortcut with the following parameter: " /writehdrfile"3. Start the created shortcut and it will create a n5110a11.hdr file rename the file to N5110.hdr4. Create a shortcut exe file with the following parameter: " /writeromfile"5. Start the created shortcut and it will create a n5110a11.rom file rename the file to DQ15A11.rom6. Copy both file "N5110.hdr" and "DQ15A11.rom" to a FAT formatted pendrive's root folder7. Remove the charger and Battery from the laptop8. Plug In the pendrive9. Press & hold END10. Connect the charger (still hold END)11. The notebook starts automatically and shows the recovery screen12. Press enter and wait until finish the flashing13. Press esc to restart14. Hopefully problem solved
