HDD shows "Import failed" in Disk Management

Q: HDD shows "Import failed" in Disk Management

Hello, my name is AmalM and I'm new here.

I have two internal HDDs. One is a Samsung and the other is a Western Digital Caviar.
The WDC has the problem. There were three partitions in it. One day when I turned on my PC, I couldn't see any of those partitions in "My Computer". It's detected in both BIOS and Disk Management. When I checked Disk Management, it showed "Error".

So I download Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics and checked my HDD. Quick test failed:

And the Extended search said that there are some bad sectors and asked me to fix it. I pressed Ok. And when I went to Disk Management again, it says " Import failed" :

And then I used TestDisk:

Here it shows my lost three partitions.
I pressed p and I could see all my files. So, I thought there's some hope and I came here:

Here, I selected "write" option and pressed y:

And this message showed:

Please help me fix that drive. 3/4 of my files are in it. Please help me.
I think it happened because one of the wires to the HDD was loose. I fixed it now. I changed the wires.
If you need any more details from me, please reply.
Please help me.

A: HDD shows "Import failed" in Disk Management

Oh my god!
When I right clicked the Disk and clicked "Offline" in Disk Management, it showed some error but the partitions are now back:

But one partition is still missing. And you can see it as "Unallocated space" in Disk Management. How do I recover it?
Anyway, I got these 2 partitions. Now, I'm confident that I'll get the other one too. Thank god.

EDIT: The partitions which came back are now shown as Read-only. How do I change it to Read/Write?
I still need help. Please help me.

EDIT: The last partition also came back after I rebooted my PC. Now the only problem is that these partitions are Read-Only. How do I change it to Read/Write? Please help me.

Hello.

Yesterday, I had to perform a new installation of Windows XP because I somehow corrupted some system files beyond repair. Now I have everything up and running anew and have made all the Windows updates and it's all honky dory. However, I just went to the Disk Managent Console with the intention of re-assigning drive letter for my storage partitions (not the one that contains Windows) and ran into a problem.

I have a partition set up on my main hard disk to use exclusively for Window's pagefile. I have not yet set up Windows to put the pagefile there. This is the next partition after the primary partition that contains the OS. I wanted to set the drive letter of this partition to Z: to get it out of the way in Windows Explorer. However, the partitions shows as:
Healthy (System)
whereas the main Windows partition shows as:
Healtyh (Boot)

This is really weird because in the past, only the Windows partition would show up as (System). I'm afraid I might have somehow screwed up during the Windows installation.
Does anybody know why this is ocurring and any possible solutions that do not include re-installing Windows?

If it's any help, when I set Windows Explorer to show all files here are the files that are on that partition:
RECYCLER (folder)
System Volume Information (folder)
boot.ini
NTDETECT.COM
ntldr

Thank you.

Hi all,

Sorry to repeat a question I see a lot of instances of, but none of those seem to be addressing my problem correctly.

I have not done anything new to my computer in recent days, so this problem has caught me off guard (I see most instances of this problem come after upgrading to Windows 7, I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

A:Stuck on "Starting Windows", Repair Shows "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted"

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

3. If neither of those work, its likely that because of the fact that when windows is repairing itself, it is generally putting copies of its system files in the same physical location on your disk. Because your disk is obviously not completely dead, ie....its still loading to the windows 7 startup screen, its just copying files to the bad sectors on your hard drive and gets stuck when loading. This is especially my guess because you said Safe mode is having same problems, even after attempting to repair. In the past, I've tried and salvage a disk by reformatting it and only leaving on partitions which do not contain the bad clusters. This takes some time, and some guess work.....and really this is only a "bandaid" fix because once the disk has bad clusters, its only a matter of time before these things give out. You wouldn't want to trust your important data on it anyways....

I hope this leads you in ... Read more

I am trying to transfer my Thunderbird address book to Webmail 5.2.2 and keep getting the "failed to import" error message. I export the Thunderbird file with .csv format and believe I am following all the other directions correctly but keep getting the error message. Does anyone have a clue on what might be going wrong? Thank you!

I am including The Webmail instructions here:

Webmail offers you the ability to import a list of contacts from another mail application. Currently, only the Microsoft Outlook 2000, 2003, Express 6, and Thunderbird CSV file formats are supported. Remember, each contact will be added to the All group regardless of the destination group to which you import your CSV file.

To import a contact list

Click the import destination group in the application pane.
The group window opens in the List pane.
Click Manage Contacts.
Click the Import tab.
Choose the import file format from the drop-down list.
Browse to the contact file you want to upload.
Click the file to select it.
Click the Open button.
Choose the group that will contain the new contacts from the drop-down list.
Click Import.

Webmail will import the contents of the file and assign the contacts to the All group.

I'm trying to install my first gateway.  I have a certificate in the computer's Personal store that I'm using for the gateway.  It was issued by the same CA with the same trust chain as the ATA Center

The gateway doesn't even try to copy any files.  I instantly get: "Failed to connect to management website" in red on the first screen and nothing else.  I don't see any errors in the logs, and using procmon I can see it trying to connect
to the right server.  I just don't see anything hitting the destination, but I want to be sure.
Trouble is, I don't see any logging anywhere saying what it tried to do or what failed.  (What server name did it use?  Was it able to establish an SSL connection?  Were the credentials not accepted?)
I can correctly connect and download the page using the DownloadString method of a System.Net.WebClient object, so the server itself doesn't appear to be generally unavailable.
Is there a log file I'm missing or something?

When trying to view my disks in Computer Management>Disk Management, I get "Connecting to Virtual Disk Service" for several minutes, then "Loading disk configuration information" nearly forever. After about 20 minutes, some information appears, but I can't scroll the window to see all the data.

Also - I'm now having trouble creating and re-naming new folders in Win Explorer. It "feels" like it's related. Has something else got control of my drives? Any suggestions welcome.

A:Disk Management hangs at "Loading disk configuration information"

Same issue except no problem with renaming folders.

Following services are running:

Virtual Disk set to Manual
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Plug and Play

Logged in as administrator account. Drives check out OK with manufacturers diagnostic tools.

Running MMC and adding the Snap-in for Disk Management(Local) does not fix the issue. I'm guessing there's a problematic registry setting for a drive that use to exist or is now having an issue. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Hello guys, the last week I've been strugling with these nasty BSODs. At first I thought it was my HDDs as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier as well due to their somewhat long years of service. However, I've recently reformated my computer and installed W7 on a brand new Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn't.

I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this forum and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm somewhat desperate, as I need my computer working for both work, school and amusement.

I've been trying to run Memtest in order to test my memory but without any results. I'm also currently running on only on 4GB chip instead of two, to see if the problem still exists. Also, without any results.

This is the second time I'm writing this thread btw, I was just about to post it and my PC crashed.

Here is my two logs + dxdiag (last crash didn't generate a log oddly enough).

Here is additional hardware/gear that I use:

Razer Megalodon 7.1 Headset
Razer Naga
Logitech G19
Logitech C920 (Webcam)
Corsair 750W PSU

My temperatures are also good. Both CPU and MB idles at around ~25. GPU's all good too. I'm also using a Corsair 650D chassi with dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly and I also did exactly this 2 days ago when I reinstalled the pc.

I have a C: drive which I want to increase in size. Under disk management there is 20GB of "Free space" - (right next to the C: partition). But neither disk management or EASUES partition manager will allow the partition to use this space. How to I change "free space" to "unallocated" so that it can be used ?

Can you post a snip showing what you have? An image makes it easier for us to help you. For example, you said that there was 20GB of free space next to your C: partition. What you didn't say was whether it was to the left or right of it.

I've scoured the net to try to solve this. It's a very simple inquiry with a very definitive answer (i.e. this is solved when I can make extended/logical partitions in disk management).

When I select unallocated space in disk maagement All I get is "New Simple Volume" option.

how do I create an extended partition and then logicals on it? I can do this ever so easily in gparted and may resort to that but a bit infuriated at how clunky this seems in disk management.

A:Logical Partitioning in Disk Management Only "Simple Volume"???

Windows disk management is very basic in that you have to create three primary partitions first before creating the fourth, which will be an extended partition that will then let you create logical partitions within it.

You may want to create a Partition Wizard bootable disc, which is far more flexible than Windows 7's disk management utility.

Hello,

I was just checking my new disk in Disk Management, and I was about to extend the volume I already had, when I miss clicked and deleted the whole volume. After some research it seems that I can recover it, because the data isn't lost yet, but I didn't find any solutions for win7 yet.
Source: How To Recover an Accidentally Deleted NTFS or FAT32 Dynamic Volume

I looked for Dskprobe.exe but it seems to not work in win7.

In the attachment you can see that I have three disks made into C: and X: I have already gotten that far in my reconstruction (as I read in the link)

But I don't know what to do know, can someone please help me? I kinda lost gigs of work and almost a TB of media

If you need more information, I'll be here updating this thread every minute

Maybe this one should have gone in the Software forum, please move it if so.
Looking forward for any support.

Hello,I got 3 equal disks which were a dynamic Raid-5 before. I want to create a Dynamic Raid-5 again in Windows 7 but it's greyed out in the context menu. I can create a mirror, stripped or spanned volume. But no Raid-5 volume. All disks are dynamic disks already and unallocated.Anyone able to help?

A: "New RAID-5 Volume..." greyed out in Disk Management

Hi,

Sorry for late reply.

After confirming with our product team, it says that RAID-5 is only supported on computers running Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2000 Datacenter Server,  Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 Operating Systems. In Windows 7, only hardware-based RAID is supported.  Thus I recommend that you check your computer to see if it meets this requirement and visit the motherboard?s support web site to download the RAID drive controller drivers.

Hi,

I had Windows 8.1 installed for quite some time and wanted to go back to 8 today until the real update rolled out. I had a system image stored with everything I wanted setup correctly. Unfortunately for some reason I couldn't restore form a system image through Windows 8.1. I opened the installer for Windows 8 and did a new install. I tried the system image again and it said something about having a dynamic disk. Through an hour of research I couldn't find any solution so I decided I'll stick with the new installation.

I noticed now when I go to My Computer, there is a new partition called SYSTEM(I) that has 112mb free of 198mb. When I look inside of it, it is empty. When I choose to show hidden files, it is still empty. When I use the disk management to delete it, it cannot be done. Any clues on how I can get this partition not to show, or even better, deleted?

I also wanted to delete the system image as it pissed me off enough already. I deleted everything from the partition and then deleted the volume (now it's unallocated space). When I try to extend drive C - my main drive - the extend option is grayed out. Any other partition is acceptable though. Any way to fix this? Thanks!

Are you plugging it into the USB connector you remember you usually use? If so, try a different USB slot, preferably one in the back of your machine.

This is Seagate's HDD troubleshooter page. Scroll down to the end of the list on the left, about a third of the way down and you will see: Troubleshooting a Seagate or Maxtor external hard drive that isn't found in Windows

There are steps there including the one I offered to help solve your dilemma.

Howdy folks

I'm stuck in a bit of a weird situation here that I have no idea how to fix.
I just bought and installed a new hard drive for the purpose of doing a RAID 0 configuration with my old drive. The BIOS picks up the new hard drive perfectly, and it's being recognised in Disk Management.

See, the pickle here is when I try to convert my Disks from Basic to Dynamic, I get this little epitome of frustration:
...HELP!
Google's not co-operating with me on this one, I can't find a single relevant article.
Is there any way to change the ever elusive 'pack name'?
Anything even slightly relevant will be a relief to read by comparison, so don't hesitate to recommend anything.

Hi, Modus Operandom, and welcome to the forums.

You say convert it to RAID - but I am puzzled as to why on earth would you try to do that in Disk Management? Are you attempting to use Software based RAID?

(what my recovery partition contains, am I missing a file?)

I copied the recovery partition over to another block of unallocated space since it was in the way of a partition I wanted to merge with my Windows partition.

After doing that, Disk Management displayed "Primary Partition" instead of "Recovery Partition".

How do I get it to show "Recovery Partition"? I re-registered WindowsRE using reagentc /setreimage, I even obtained new files for WinRE from the install.wim in my ESD folder, used 450 MB on the dot, and I tried this diskpart script:

Code:
rem == HideRecoveryPartitions-UEFI.txt
select disk 0
select partition 3
remove
set id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac
gpt attributes=0x8000000000000001

It still displays "Primary Partition". All I want is for Disk Management to identify the partition as the Recovery Partition.

Also, what is the default PBRImage Location (the one that uses install.wim, not winre.wim) for Windows 10? I'm currently using a custom one, but I'm curious of the default one.

A:How do I show "(Recovery Partition)" in Disk Management?

So despite my computer being able to boot into a UEFI-environment, I had to use a BIOS-environment script to get the desired result.

Code:
rem == HideRecoveryPartitions-BIOS.txt
select disk 0
select partition 3
set id=27
remove
list volume
exit

This topic can now be locked (although I am still curious about the default PBRImage location, as mentioned previously--so if anyone knows that, please post :3).

Hi,

I am not sure whether I should be posting this in the Windows forum or the PC Hardware because it involves both.

I have an external 320 GB Transcend Drive with a lot of important data.
Recently, I unplugged it from my PC and took to another to get some files.
One the other machine (Vista), it didn't show up as far as I can remember, thought that was strange so i brought it back to my Laptop (Win 7, Dual Boot with Ubuntu 10) and it only showed as Local Disk, I have tried to find useful information on the net but some is very vague and some is outright stupid and irrelevant.

The fact is that the HDD is not broken. When in Ubuntu I can view the contents fine and everything is there, no freeze ups or anything, but in windows the drive shows up as Local Disk, I don't think it is a drive letter conflict.

The Device shows up fine in the Device Manager.
I'm sure some of you have solved this problem as it seems many on the Internet have.
If so please tell me in a few steps how you resolved it.. I am not formatting as I do not deem this necessary since I can access my data fine in Ubuntu.

Kind Regards

Problem:

Everything was running fine until yesterday, when my PC crashed with the BSOD giving me the "IRQL not less or equal" error. I ignored it and carried on- which resulted in the computer crashing with "Memory management" blues whenever I started something that was not the browser (It later started crashing on browser start too).

I first thought it was the temperature - Memtest95 and GPUtemp said otherwise.

So I started testing the RAM (taking one DIMM out) with Memtest86- It passed 4 cycles, so I shut the PC down and put the other DIMM in.

When I turned the PC on again, there was no signal sent to my screen, and none to my keyboard (and the HDD light on the front of the case did not start blinking like usual). The fans were running, so I figured something might be wrong with the DIMMs I put in. I removed the graphics card and plugged the screen into the motherboard.

Now the screen gets a signal, background lighting starts up, and then it shuts down to hibernation again. This repeats itself until the machine is shut down manually.

I got no idea what to do.

System specs: http://pastebin.com/DQwejZLx
I can not post the Minidump folder, since the PC can't start and I did not back it up. Sorry.

Thank you for your help.

Hi all. Earlier today I was playing around with Windows 8 Developer Preview inside of Virtualbox. I tried to install the VB guest additions (which allows copy-paste between guest and host, as well as other things) and was told to restart the computer. So I restarted the VM and got the new version of the BSOD saying something or other that I cant remember now. After trying to fix it with the recovery tool that came with the Win8 installer, I just chose to reset it because I hadn't really done anything. So I reset it, whoopdie-doo, and kept messing around with it. After a while I got bored of the ugly Metro UI and went back to Windows 7 ( I just closed the VM).

Now that I've bored you enough with background info, here's my problem. I reboot my laptop and I can't boot... "Windows has failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. The recovery disk I had on my thumb drive just didn't want to put as much effort into it as recovery disk I burned to a CD a while ago (I downloaded the ISO for the recovery CD from NeoSmart while they still hosted them for free, but I downloaded the ISO on my USB from some other website I can't remember). While doing some housecleaning (it's pretty sad to see me do such a thing- I'm either really stressed or really happy whenever I house clean) I found an old Windows 7 x64 recovery CD that I had downloaded from NeoSmart.com before they stopped hosting it in favor of some paid service. I decided to give it a go, and it worked! In the third paragraph of my original post, I said that the Recovery Disk on my thumb drive told me "Failed to Save Startup Options", but with the Recovery Disk I burned to the CD, it told me to reboot my PC and (after waiting about 10 minutes for the System Restore to check and double check itself, and then reboot again) I'm back in Windows 7!

It may still be showing if the system image was created as part of a Windows backup. Using the tutorial below to reset Windows Backup should clear it for you, but you will need to set up your backup again afterwards.

If your drive or PC is still under warranty, I would have the drive replaced. The SMART diagnostics are used to tell you if the drive is running outside of the specs designed by the manufacturer. If the drive goes outside the specs, then there is usually a 72-hour timeframe before the drive fails completely.

But with the error you are getting, it sounds like it's an error with the SMART diags themselves - which should be replaced anyway.

This is the error i was presented with earlier today when i checked my mailbox. An employee had trouble with his computer and told me that the computer hangs and when hes running system diagnostics he gets short DST failed. My first thought was "chkdsk /r". But when i got my hands on the laptop i tried to boot into windows vista. No problems at all until 10 minutes later everything froze just as described in the mail. Ok, so i booted up a Vista CD, ran chkdsk /r. When done i booted into Vista again 10 minutes went by, 20, 1 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours and nothing happen. Ok so nothing is wrong now it seems. I figured i could run the disk self test now without any problems. But the disk self test goes into SHORT DST FAILED even before it has started. The only logical explaination i have for this is that the error is not correct. And i uninstalled a lot of programs on his computer also and shut down a few unknown services that was not supposed to be there. Everything works perfectly, but im still getting SHORT DST FAILED. So im having a luxury problem here. Anyone familiar with this or have any solutions? Maybe the disk is about to crash? Im scratching my head. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

A:Disk error "Short DST failed"

Backup immediately - you may/may not get further warnings from the system.

Short DST is usually a "spot check" of the disk. So I'd suspect that a non-essential sector is going bad on you.

Run the long test to see if the drive is dying. Do you want to trust the data to a disk that's in the process of failing?

My notebook is set to the recommended screen resolution, under display settings that allows you to change the text size indepdenent of the screen resolution, I was expecting to see 3 radio buttons (as per the windows 7 tutorial) but I can see only "Small" and "medium". I haven't played around with different screen resolutions to see if it has any effect.

I wonder if it needs some driver update or related to my screen resolution or whatever? Thanks.

A:display settings only shows "Small" & "Medium"

I really don't know, but the Nvidia driver automatically makes some adjustments, depending on what it is installed on. I suspect that they feel no one would want the large text on a small display.

I just resolved an issue I had with the wireless connectivity of my Acer notebook computer and now I am getting strange error messages. When I try (not every instance) to open device manager I will get the message "Failed to open empty document." From there I will occasionally get "Parser" messages that say "Value creation failed at line 843" or "line 422." I read what I could find about these messages and it points to MMC as the cause. How do I go about fixing this annoying problem if anyone knows?

Hi All,

Thanks in advance for any help.

I purchased and installed an Iomega 34766 NAS yesterday. I have three machines that run Windows 7 (2 - Ulitmate 32bit & 64bit; 1 - Professional 32bit) and a Windows xp machine.

I am having trouble getting the Windows 7 Professional 32bit machine to show the NAS as a computer under the network folder. It will show the NAS as a Media Device and Other device. I can access the device as a media device, but when I click other device, it opens a IE browser and errors out. I have not been able to map the device in windows explorer either. This NAS has a print server built in and it will not show the printer either.

My other two Windows 7 Ultimate 32 & 64 bit (Desktop-Windows & HTPC) machines work just fine and the NAS shows under the computer and media device and does not show as other device. The printer pluged in the NAS works like a charm.

The primary computer that I need to work is the windows 7 professional version (LPC-PC) thats not working.

I posted a screen shot of what I am looking at from the computer that does not work and one of the machines that is working.

As a side note, LPC-PC is my laptop and it is the machine that is not working. Desktop-Windows and HTPC are the two machines that it is working just fine on.

I have almost 2 Gb of music on my computer that I'd hate to lose. And hate to have to rebuy or redownload too.

So what I'm wondering is... can I back up all that music on 3-4 700mb disks as a data disk instead of making a 70 minute music disk?

I have Sonic RecordNow that I use for music burning and data backup. I'm just wondering if it is possible to back up 1/3 of it in a folder as a data disk, and do the same for the other parts.

Possible? Would this work?

It would make much more sense to have 4 disks that although you could not PLAY them in a CD player as the songs would be stored in a folder on it, to just be able to copy them out onto another computer instead of making 20+ audio CD's.

Would my idea work? Help me out guys...

Hello, TSG!

Just yesterday I was using the computer normally until I got a Blue Screen. Getting a blue screen is usually something normal that occurs to my every so often, so I didn't mind it and rebooted the computer normally. However, I got two more blue screens within the next hour. The 3rd time rebooting, my computer starts to act strange as if it had a virus. Upon powering up the monitor would just display a black screen with two lines about something --- which I don't remember, sorry --- and stayed like that unless I plugged out the power cord or held on the power button to shut down. Then when after a few tries it boots and displays a message "Floppy Disk Failure" and "Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1" (and the same message for Drives 2 and 3) show up. Also it asks me to continue loading by pressing the F1 Key.

When Windows loads the first time, it displays a message saying a bunch of hardware has just been installed and ready for use. Also, my internal clock resetted itself back to Monday, November 07, 2005 (Which, if I recall, is the date when I got the computer) and my speakers do not work.

TL;DR Version
3 blue screens within a short time
Floppy disk fail
Drivers 1-3 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1-3

Anyway, I browsed through Google but I haven't seen anyone with both problems. I disabled my Floppy Disk Drive and that message doesn't show up anymore, but the others do and my computer still isn't fixed. I ran a vir... Read more

The most usual cause is that the Hard Drive is beginning to fail. Back up your stuff. Go to the website of the manufacturer and test the drive.

Hey everyone, I just got a new Sony SDM-HS75 17" LCD monitor to replace an old 15" CRT for christmas...and i went to set it up tonight and when i did and turned my computer on it showed the bios and the windows XP loading but after it loaded it would go black and show the "No Input Signal" box on the screen and then go into sleep mode soon there after. I rebooted but the same thing happened... i know its not the computer because the CRT monitor has been working fine on it for almost a year now and still is working, but i'm baffled to as to what the problem is... followed the manuals troubleshooting instructions and installed the drivers and set the monitor setting to that of my new monitor, but that didnt work...also tried switching it into "Plug and Play" as the monitor setting but that didnt work either... can anyone please offer me some advice as to how to get this working? any and all help is appreciated... Thank you - Justin

Ii's probably this. Boot into safe mode (tap F8 on boot up), and set the resolution to 60-65Hz. Then reboot as usual. The new monitor probably cant handle the res it is set at now.

If that doesn't work, come back.

A:Share Management via "Computer Management" Snap-In

This is nothing new to me, that is to say, managing shares from the Computer Management Snap-In. What is "new" to me is why on certain machines on the network the "Properties" and "Stop Sharing" items are not listed int he context menu when you right-click on a share. Is this a permissions issue? I can't see that it would be seeing as how the "Computer Administrator" is ticked in the "Users" control panel. Any ideas? I've actually wondered about this for a long time, but now it's essential that I know.

A:Share Management via "Computer Management" Snap-In

Yes this is permission issue. You have to give user file sharing permission and security permission. If you give premission to user to use files or share have to check your security permission. Also make sure users power user permission on local computer.Check your GPO for users instead.

You can also try SFC scan:

The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:
1. Click Start and then type cmd in the Start Search box.

2. Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
3. At the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

4. Hit Enter.

The SFC scan should replace the corrupted files.
I hope this helps you, Good Luck.

I have four external drives (FAT32) and opened Partition Magic a couple of days ago. It said one drive was "BAD". MS Disk Administrator says drive is "Healthy".

I am able to access this drive through Windows Explorer and do anything I want with the data. This appears to be a false reading by Partition Magic but I am not completely convinced of this because it has been such a good program for many years.

Do you think I have a failing drive?

A:Partition Magic says drive "BAD". Disk Administrator says "Healthy"

I wouldn't trust either program. Find out the manufacturer of the hard drive and download their hard drive diagnostics. The manufacturer's own tests should give you a much better idea if its in good shape or not.

Hi guys. I'm new here. I've tried to read all the discussion about how to fix the unallocated hard drive but I just can't understand it as the cases were pretty much different than I'm facing of.

Here's my problem.
Yesterday my external hard drive seems normal, everything is fine, until there's a blackout and I have to put "sleep" to my laptop. After the power got back, the hard drive suddenly gone and when I check the list of drives under "Disk Management", it showed up as "Disk 1 - Unallocated".

(I've attached screenshots here for your viewing)

My external hard drive is WD My Passport 1TB. It contains a lot of valuable data I cannot afford to lose. I really hope there's a way to fix this, and once I get back all of those precious data I will buy another HD to transfer them ASAP because I cant let this happen to me again.

Your help is so, very much appreciated.
Any questions regarding my problem, let me know. I'll provide all of the details you guys need.

NOTE
1) I've tried TestDisk but on the "Analyse" process, it says "read error"
2) I've changed cable, but the situation remains the same.
3) I've tried Recuva, but it doesnt recognize my external drive.

A:WD EXTERNAL HARD DISK 1TB suddenly "unallocated" and "not initialized"

Hi!

First don't mess up with the WD drive settings.. download partition wizard 7 (its free)..then .. open it ..click wizard(menu) .. select partition recovery wizard.. and it will find the partitions on it i think.. that way you can recover your partition that has been lost.

It's running 7 Home Premium 64 bit with SP1.
The Windows Update page shows that Windows could not search for updates, which resulted in the error 8007370B
The link on that page to get help for this error has no results.

Hey, Welcome.
Is it a Toshiba laptop? I know that some Toshiba laptops have a backup utility that is on by default that basically backs up all your information into a temp directory. Your computer might be doing the same thing. You can change the settings for this from the Toshiba recovery console, or something like that. It was located under the start menu/accessories area. Of coarse it might be a different in your case.

Mods, if you feel that this thread is more of a "Windows" issue, please feel free to move this thread.

Here last year I did my second build because I was having "boot" issues. Wasn't certain what exactly the problem was at the time. But something some how screwed up the boot sequence in my system, and where everything was pretty much "outdated." I just went ahead and did another build.

Though, since then I've been pondering around with the thought of using a SATA to IDE adapter so that I can retrieve what ever salvageable data I can from one of the two HDD's that was in my last build. So I finally broke down and ordered a couple different one's earlier this week.

Unfortunately, I've been running in to some problem(s) when I try to launch with the IDE in place.

Upon initial launching, the boot sequence seem to take some time longer than it normally does with out the IDE HDD in place. Though after a 15-20sec lapse I'll get an error screen displaying an windows error code of "0xc000000e" with a prompt message below stating "The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible"

I searched all over online to see what that error code represents, only to get "pages after pages" of sites with each site telling me something different.

I have no intentions of using this as a third HDD in my system. I just want to retrieve select data from it.

Hi

A 3.5" external hard drive connected to my Windows XP machine via USB 2.0 has a "disappearing" and "reappearing" partition problem.

After the external drive is turned on, all four partitions on it will be displayed. Very soon, they will all disappear in Windows Explorer. After a brief moment, they will reappear along with a USB-symbol icon in the taskbar, which brings up a "Hi-speed USB Device Attached to non-Hi-speed Hub" warning suggesting that I use free Hi-speed USB ports (indicated in bold).

My computer's USB ports are all USB 2.0 and I've tried attaching the external drive to different ports on the machine, all with the same result.

Would anyone hazard a guess as to the likely cause of this problem:
(1) Failed (or failing) USB controller on the external enclosure?
(2) Failing power supply to the xeternal enclosure?
(3) Corrupted partition table on the drive?
(4) Failed (or failing) USB controller on the mobo?
(5) Any other cause?

The enclosure also has an eSATA port. When connected via eSATA (or USB 2.0) to another computer, no such problem appears.

Thanks in advance!

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm posting this in the Vista forum because this has never happened with Windows 2000 or XP.

I bought two exact duplicate models of hard disks. I set up Vista Ultimate on one of my systems. I used Acronis True Image 10 to clone the operating disk to the factory-new, never-used, same model disk as a backup drive in the event the first disk failed. I put in the clone to be sure it runs; but, I get the error mentioned in the title of this thread.

Now, if the second disk is supposed to be a clone of the first, why does this happen and how can I fix it?

I'm not married to Acronis for this job so I would use any disk cloning tool that makes a sector-for-sector copy. I use Norton Ghost 2003 for making sector-for-sector raw image (forensic) copies of PATA drives; but, these are SATA drives and Ghost 2003 simply sits there like Tarbaby and he don't say nuttin' to no SATA drive.

I have actually been getting this error for the past month, at least since March 29th. I've made several attempts to work around it but to no avail. It appears that there is an error with the other browsers as well. I have searched for solutions for this for several weeks, none of which fit my problem. I uninstalled my clamwin antivirus in favor of Windows Security Essentials, though, most people have fixed this problem by messing with AVG? I don't think I have AVG on my computer?

Anyway, if someone knows how to solve this problem please let me know, I'm willing to try anything.

I have a need to run two instances of Outlook on my laptops with two different profiles. I found this tool called ExtraOutlook v1.3, unzipped it and installed it on one of my laptops running Windows 7 Home Premium and Outlook 2010 and was able to get it to work - I can run two instances of Outlook with two separate profiles.

But on the laptop running Windows 7 Professional with Outlook 2010, I get the error "Function not found in Import Table".

I followed the same steps but I am getting an error. Can anyone provide an insight as to what might be causing the error and how to fix it?

Hello All,
I have two identical computers (Gateway NV76R w/Windows 8 64 bit) and need some help duplicating a desired feature.

I managed to install Windows Live Photo Gallery on my computer a while back and configured the "import" feature to run automatically when inserting an SD card; exactly as we were able to do in Windows 7 ("Import Photos and Videos").

However, I now cannot remember how to make the "auto" Import feature run on my Dad's identical computer?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've gone into "Autoplay" and "Default Programs" and have both computers setup the same and I'm using the same Photo Gallery version on each computer (Photo Gallery 2011, build 15.4.3555.308).
Any insight? Did I happen upon a Registry tweak for my computer? It's been a while now so I cannot recall. Note: I initially installed a different version of Photo Gallery on his computer but have since replaced it with the identical version.
Thanks,

Hi, I'm running Vista home premium 64bit. New computer, new operating system
I wanted to import some pics from my camera (nikon D300) and noticed that there is no longer a "camera, photo, scanner wizard" like XP had.

I decided to try and use the windows live photo gallery. I picked the groups I wanted to copy off of my camera. Gave them a name or tag. Went to import options and choose my writable drive to import them to.

I get this box:
options/import options: you cannot import to this folder. Choose another location.

I have tried both a CD / DVD, and I know there is room. I went into windows explorer and manually copied the pics to the writable drive so I know its working.

So my question is: Why wont Windows live photo gallery let me save my photo's off of my camera to my writable drive?

Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated.
Terri

A:Windows live photo gallery "import to" problem

Hi Chammari,
So, when you plug in your camera, do you get a window that pops up with ?AutoPlay? at the top? You might try unplugging, then plugging in your camera a couple times. A window should (under normal circumstances) pop up with your device name and give you options as to what you?d like to do with it (i.e. import pictures using Windows, import pictures using Windows Live Photo Gallery, open device to view files, etc.).
If that isn?t the case for you, you should be able to do the same thing from within the Windows Live Photo Gallery program, but not to a writeable drive. For this, you will have to first import the photos, then transfer them to the writeable drive.
Hope this helps a bit.
Cheers,
Ron

Hi, I just got a new laptop and I'm trying to export/import my address book from Outlook Express. When I import the addresses it only imports individual names and not "groups." It there a way to import groups as well? When I exported the address book from the old laptop I used the "text file (comma separated values)" option. Is this the right one to use?
Thanks.

A:"Outlook Express" Export/Import Address Book

Hi 2praisehim

No, it will not Export the Groups, you will need to recreate them.
The .csv file is the best backup, this format makes it available to Import to other programs.

As an alternative, you can make a copy of the .wab file and copy it over to the new computer.
To find the location of the original Address Book,
Open the Address Book in Outlook Express:
Tools > About Address Book
The directory will appear along with the name of the .wab file, which usually is the User Account name.wab

Navigate to that directory and copy the .wab file.
Copy the .wab file to the Desktop on the laptop,
find the location of the Address Book for Outlook Express,
Check this directory on the Laptop,
C:\Documents and Settings\User Account\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\User Account.wab
rename the .wab file to User Account.wab.old
Copy the backup .wab file to that directory and rename it to the same name as the current .wab file: User Account.wab

In Outlook Express, click the Address Book icon to open, the replaced Address Book should appear.

Let us know if that works for you or not.

This link has more information on the Address Book for Outlook Express:

Here's the story. I bought this new Samsung 840 250GB SSD.
I first did a clean install of windows 7 on it and it worked fine. Windows installed without much problem and everything. Then something didn't look right about the partitions. It looked like because I had all my HDDs connected while installing windows on the SSD the windows created the system reserve on the old HDD rather than the SSD. So I went back and decided to start from scratch with all the HDDs except for the SSD disconnected. I tried reinstalling windows on it but this time it didn't work. I tried formatting the SSD and it just gave me an error saying windows couldn't install on a GPT disk. I went into bios, made sure the PC was booting from the UEFI DVD drive and it still kept giving me the same error.

So I then booted up my old HDD. I tried formatting my SSD and now I can't delete the partition!
This is what my disk set up looks like:

If I click "extend volume" on the "New Volume (G" disk, it says "there is not enough space on the disk(s) to complete this operation".
If I try to create a "new simple volume" on the "unallocated" partition, it says the same...

Have I destroyed my new SSD now?! I just want it to work like a new clean disk...

Newbie here. I have searched around for a while but have not found a post with my exact situation.

I just installed a new Seagate Momentus 500gb (7200rpm) SATA drive in my Lenovo X61 laptop and have been working on a installation of Windows7 Ultimate.

Not realizing this was an upgrade install disk, I tried to install Win7. I didn't know about the clean install method, so I started over with an installation of WinXP (slipstreamed to deal with the SATA drive).

Next, I ran the Custom Installation upgrade to Win7.

So far, it seems to be working ok.

However, the Local Drive is D: instead of C:. The System Reserved drive in labeled C:. Should I be concerned? Should/Can I change this?

Attached are screenshots of Disk Management and explorer window.

Thank you for any info.
-Nate

A:"System Reserved (C:)" and "Local Disk (D:)" ??

Try removing the System Reserved drive letter in Disk Management to see if Win7 claims C instead. It sometimes works.

There is no reason you can't operate with Win7 as D even though it is meant to always assume the C letter unless it's installer is run from another OS.

But if you do I would not allow a drive letter for SysReserved as programs can write to and corrupt it, especially the ability to make Win7 backup images.

Now that you know you can clean install Win7 without needing XP on the HD, I would strongly consider booting the installer to do a Custom install, choose Drive Options to Delete all partitions, Create new as you wish, then Format before installing to first partition after SysReserved it will create for you. The installer will see an OS at boot to allow use of Upgrade version key upfront during install.

Here are tips to get a perfect reinstall - use the ones which apply: Clean Reinstall steps

Download and run the disk manufacturer's utility to partition and format this drive. That should find the drive and do the job for you.

You didn't say what brand of drive it was, so I can't point you to the utility, but you can find it with a search of the manufacturer.

G'day fellow TSF members,.. it's been a while since I last posted a question on the Forum, this one isn't all that important but It's bugging me.
I recently installed "SeaMonkey" browser just to try it out,.. sure it doesn't have all the bells & whistles that my beloved "Firefox" has, but it's a mustard cutter with speed which is what my aging PC is longing for. I still use Firefox with all those yummy add-ons but sometimes feel the need for speed which is what I get with SeaMonkey.
I just can't figure out how SeaMonkey, (from the Mozilla stables), will automatically import all bookmarks from Internet Explorer to SeaMonkey but NOT from its blood brother, Firefox.
I've tried all known methods to manually import bookmarks from Firefox to SeaMonkey but to no avail. Can anybody help ?

click Organize BookMarks
click File
Export
save the Bookmarks file somewhere that you will remember

Then
open SeaMonkey
click Bookmarks
click Manage BookMarks
click Tools
Import
navigate to where you saved FireFox's Bookmarks, then click open

Your Bookmarks should now be imported over to SeaMonkey

A:Solved: IE "Import from another browser" grayed out

you need to choose "import from a file".

Firstly though you need to export from Firefox (desktop is the most convenient place to store the default "bookmarks.html").

Then import into IE when prompted to choose location. Be sure to choose IE's favorites as destination.
P.S. for some reason your IE's import/export wizard is disabled, hence the greyed out option. IE is not recognizing another browser (FF) being installed.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

Hi I'm pretty new to java so i apologisse in advance for the mundane question.
Anyway, I'm using an Editor/Compiler called "BlueJ" and the program I've tried to write doesn't like the following line:

import java.util.Scanner;

If I can't even do this little thing then I'm gonna have major problems with trickier stuff. Is this a problem with the compiler or the programmer ?

A:Java "import" problem

Is your JDK installed properly? java.util.scanner is in 1.5, but not in the earlier versions, so make sure you have right version.

A:BSOD "Memory Management" Random Crashes

I do see this driver listed on the system > AODDriver2.sys Thu Apr 5 05:23:37 2012
It's the AMD Overdrive driver and can sometimes cause issues in Win 7 & 8.

But lets see if driver verifier can pinpoint which if any particular driver is causing it.
Follow the instructions here, make sure to set a restore point before enabling verifier, also if you do not have Windows disk create a Windows repair disk

Ok, so i installed 16 gigs of new ram on my pc last night, i have 6 ram slots, i got 4 new 4 gig cards, put them in, and put 2 of my old 2 gig cards in, they are all 1600's so they should be compatible, 20gigs. last night, everything ran fine, i was gaming, on facebook, everything, no problems, i put the comp to sleep and went to bed.

Got up this morning, took it out of sleep and it started crashing, blue screen of death,"memory management" so i went in, took the old ram cards out, just ran the new ones, didnt get the blue screen of death anymore, but the "hourglass" icon wouldnt go away from my mouse. so i did defrag, disk cleanup, command prompt sfc/scannow, cleaned out malware, the hourglass went away. Now when i check my specs in dxdiag or ctrl alt del, it is reading the 16 gigs of ram, i also went to the website downloaded burned and used memtest, it ran and completed with no errors, i did the microsoft memory diagnostic at bootup, same thing, no errors.

So i thought its all fixed, and everythings fine, i played battlefield for about 45 mins, quit, went into the web browser to go to facebook, got the blue screen of death again, "MemoryManagement" i rebooted, it keeps happening, less frequently, but still happening,i also made sure all my drivers are up to date. If anyone has any insight or advice, i would greatly appreciate it.

So i ran the memtest86+ test overnight. No errors, but still the error came back. In the process of running another memtest86+ test now. Any help? Could it be the ram issue but memtest is unable to detect it?

A:Recently having this BSOD called "Memory Management"

Some memory errors can stem from CPU issues. Test the CPU using this guide:
