Need help deciding on an x16 card

Q: Need help deciding on an x16 card

alright so im building a new system this july, and im pretty sure im gonna go with a board that has pci-e x16 (i can't find a decent AGP 4x/8x card out there in my price range). I'm on a really tight budget and i dont game that often, so basically i just want the most bang for my buck. here are the contenders so far:

ASUS Geforce 6200 - $94 on newegg
ASUS Radeon X700 LE - $106 on newegg
ASUS Geforce 6600 - $122 on newegg

I've been reading this comparison:

which has the x700 (and im pretty sure they said they didnt use the pro version) killing the other cards. well, lemme know what you think, thank ya

A: Need help deciding on an x16 card

if you don't game then I wouldn't get a hot card.

hey guys i was planning on getting a 8800gt a couple months ago. Then my older brother wanted me to go halfs with him on a ps3. So there my saved up money for a 8800gt went and now my birthday is coming up in april then my confirmation in may so im going to have at least like $500. And now i was debating to still get a 8800 gt or a 8800 gtx . Im going to start off with my explanation of the 8800GT if i get the 8800GT i dont have to get a new power supply . Next i will tell you about the 8800GTX if i get this card i will need a new power supply ( any suggestions on the power supply?) also this card will give me amazing performance and wont totally break my bank because the one i found is only $399CAN . But i was thinking since i found the 8800 gt so cheap i might get a new power supply and just grab 2 8800gt for SLI the 8800gt i was looking at costed $239CAN each
anyways any suggestions guys? much apppreciated!

A:Need help deciding on a vid card!

I would go with the 8800GTX, myself.
Someone like Rage will give better power supply results.

Hey all

Im looking to buy a new Video card and need some opinions in regards to which card of the following ones is worth it (meaning performance/price ):
$700 ( might get it for $600) - BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC2 ( )

$700 - XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra (

$550 - ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT ( )

$730 - BFG GeForce 8800 Ultra OC 630MHZ 768MB 2.22GHZ ( TECHNOLOGIES)

So from that list what would be a good choice?
I was looking mostly on the first one the GTX OC2 which has almost the same speeds as the ultra but is way cheaper. I know the Ultra OC would be good but does these few extra mhz would really make much difference and are worth the price?
Oh and BTW if anyone wants to buy a ATI x1900 XTX let me know.

I'm looking for a good video card. I just bought a new motherboard and processor and have yet to get the video card, but I plan to next paycheck. I have an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ running at 2.4GHz with 1GB of DDR RAM and an available 8X AGP slot. I'm looking at the $150 pricerange and currently the ones I am looking at are:

Radeon x1600 Pro 256MB 8X AGP

GeForce 6600 256MB 8X AGP

GeForce 6800XT 128MB 8X AGP

If you have any other suggestions I'd love to hear it. I'm not sure how the Radeon fairs against the GeForce's and I'm not sure if the 6800XT is better than the 6600 even though it has 128MB less memory.

A:Help deciding on a Video Card

What will you be using the computer for? From a stricly gaming standpoint, I'd say the 6800XT is the better choice even though it has less memory. The 6600 (vanilla) is a little whimpy.

Hi all,

So right now I have an Evga Nvida geforce 9600 gt (EVGA 512-P3-N861-AR GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card - in my computer, but it is starting to get to the point where some games dont play too well. I have to play a lot of games on low settings and they often have low fps. So I need a new graphics card that compares to what the xbox one and ps4 have so I can play all these new games on higher settings. I dont know what to get. I was looking at this one, it seemed to have a good price (EVGA 02G-P4-2643-KR GeForce GT 640 2GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card -, but I dont know if it is much better than what I have.

I currently have a 256 MB ATI Radeon x800 graphics card.

I've found that it doesn't quit run World of Warcraft like it used to. I checked Newegg and found that PCI Express 16x cards are really cheap.

Could someone suggest something that could out-perform my current graphics card for less than $75 or so?

I was considering this one...

I really don't know much about graphics cards, so maybe I'm totally off here.

Any suggestions are much appreciated!

I'm planning to buy a new graphics card. Im considering the ti4600, ati 9700, ati 9800, or FX5900ultra.
The problem is if any of these cards would run on my computer. I have a 440BX motherboard with a 100 mhz FSB and the AGP is i believe 1.0 (2x only). The processor is a P3 1ghz slot1, and i have 448 megs of SDRAM (pc100). I dont care if the cards wont run at full potential, because any of those cards is better than what i have at the moment, ati VIVO DDR (~7200). I also have a geforce2mx and tnt2ultra on standby.

I dont plan on getting a new computer anytime soon, maybe in another 3 years.

Do the newer cards require more power than the ati vivo ddr? (as in, do i have to purchase a new power supply (i forget what i have now, it came stock with this Dell XTS550)

A:need help deciding which gfx card to purchase

I would suggest going with a lower end card since you won't be upgrading soon. As you kind of implied, you won't really see the cards full potential with your current system, compared to paying less for a card who's pull potential you WILL see. Even though you said you don't mind, there really isn't a point in spending a lot more money on a card when you won't see the potential of the card. Though, a higher end card still may perform a bit better than a lower end card in your system, my opinion is that your best option is to probably go with something like a Geforce 4.

I did a quick search on Google and Dell's websites and didn't come up with any results for the XTS550. Are you sure that is the correct model?

I would suggest at least a 350watt power supply. Some people have been safe with a 300watt PSU as long as it is a high quality PSU. You don't want your PSU to cause stability problems or worse die on you, possibly taking other components of your system with it. The rails on most PSU's are rated incorrectly and lack around 1v on each rail (the PSU I got with a case did the same for me so I upgraded to a Enermax 350watt -- I'm using the Radeon 9700 Pro).

The TI4600 should be a good choice as far as cards from the list you gave. You can get it for about $160, compared to around $260+ for the Radeon 9700 Pro and $450 for the 5900 Ultra.
The 5900 Ultra would honestly be a really bad choice and a wast... Read more

1.) Alright.... to make this brief, I'm looking at upgrading from my Creative Audigy ZS2 to an X-Fi, however, lookong Newegg only confounded me. The cheaper X-fi has more reviews, but I fear that this is only because it's the smug "fatal1ty" version... Anyways, I want this to be an end-all sort of upgrade, for the time being, or the end-all-under-$200 (but that's not a limit, I may stretch that)... so, could you fine people, who are more versed in the field of sound cards than I am, recommend the best card you can get as a gamer, and the best under $200? I've also heard of these "Santa Cruz" cards...

2.) Also... I'm currently using an AMD Athlon XP DC Manchester 4200+ DCPU, and it's served me well since Nov.'04, but I think I may be moving up to what is apparently the last great thing you can get for a Socket 939, the Denmark 2.6 DC. Would I really notice that big of a difference in my games? I know that most defer to the GPU for performance nowadays, but Supreme Commander doesn't : (, and my CPU is apparently a bottleneck of sorts in that, judging by the demo. More on that later.

3.) My cores seem to stay at a nice 30-37 degree Celsius temperature, even while gaming, so I've also considered overclocking them... I'm a relative newbie in that area, though, so I was wondering if anyone can give me an estimate of much I can OC them without additional cooling if they are hitting those numbers at present.

Right at the moment i'm thinking of getting a 6870 card by MSI . I just don't know if it's going to make a big enough difference in performance. I play a wide range of games like Fallout: New Vegas, Dead Rising 2, and Arma 2. While I don't play balls out with all the settings maxed and anti-aliasing maxed, I do like to have the graphics up decently and have a smooth frame rate. I've heard the 6870's are very similar to the 5870's without the bigger price tag and the 6870's having some newer features. If anyone else can think of another way to boost my system, without switching to intel, I'm open to suggestions too. But, right now I think my graphics card is the lead weight in my system.

Hello, I have recently decided to get a new graphics card for my HP Compaq Presario CQ5320Y. After opening it up I only see one PCI slot and 2 black slots that are unkown to me. I have done a little research and some sites say that there are PCI express slots but i am not sure which ones those are. Anyways after looking around, I decided on this card but am still not sure if its the best i should get, an suggestions? I am looking for a card for mostly gaming and am willing to spend up to $100 - $150 tops. This is the one I have decided on so far. Galaxy Technology 512 MB DDR3 GeForce GTS250 Graphics Card 25SFF6HX1RUI (sorry about no links unable to post links or images for now)

A:Deciding on buying new graphics card and need help with motherboard slots

The HP Compaq Presario CQ5320Y does have 1 PCI-E x16 slot and 1 PCI-E x1 slot. The best option for you would be to purchase an ATI Radeon HD 5770. It will give vastly superior performance compared to the GTS 250. However, for either card, your PSU will be insufficient. Presently your system has a 250W PSU. You will need one in excess of 400W with sufficient amperage on the 12V rails. The Corsair 400CX should be good enough but the 450VX is a safer bet.

Firstly: Yes--I'm aware that there's not a single "best" AV out there. And I know that no AV will protect anyone 100% of the time. I know common sense is the best tool, etc; I've read quietman7's posts and the guide (

Anyway, I would just like to hear some opinions for choosing an AV based on my current rundown. I've done prior research, so I know the basic gists of most AV programs. Here goes:

I am deciding on an AV for 64-bit Windows 7. I share a nice, new desktop computer with my two brothers. Being young and addicted to the web, the lot of us are not prone to be the safest internet surfers/users in the world, but at the same time none of us are terribly gullible or lacking in common sense, so we won't go around clicking and downloading anything that will likely harm the computer. (Actually, to be honest, I'm a relatively safe surfer, but I cannot always control my brothers.) My brothers game from time to time, so I'd prefer something that's light on the system and that's not a huge resource hog (I hear Kaspersky is pretty heavy). However, I don't necessarily want to give up better security for size/weight of the AV. Also, price isn't my primary concern (I'm willing to pay for quality), although it'd be nice to opt for something cheaper. Also, I'm already using comodo firewall + malwarebytes (free vers... A:deciding between AVs

My personal choice is NOD32 Anti-Virus if choosing a paid for program as it leaves a small footprint. That means it is not intrusive and does not utilize a lot of system resources.I recommend taking advantage of the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Pro) Protection Module in the full version which uses advanced heuristic scanning technology to monitor your system and provide real-time protection to prevent the installation of most new malware. This technology runs at startup where it monitors every process and helps stop malicious processes before they can infect your computer. Keep in mind that this feature does not guarantee something will not slip through as no product can detect and prevent every type of malware. The database that defines the heuristics is updated as often as there is something to add to it. Also keep in mind that Malwarebytes does not act as a real-time protection scanner for every file like an anti-virus program so it is intended to be a supplement, not a substitute. Enabling the Protection Module feature requires registration and purchase of a license key that includes free lifetime upgrades and support. After activation, Malwarebytes can be set to update itself and schedule scans automatically on a daily basis. The Protection Module is not intrusive as the program utilizes few system resources and should not conflict with other scanners or anti-virus programs. If any conflicts between Malwarebytes and another security program are reported, suggested solution... Read more

Okay so my company needs to have way to connect a couple of user from the road and home. right now we are just using remote desktop. we need something better. we are probably going to get a t-1 line but i think i need something a little faster. what are options? also i am stuck with either terminal server or VPN. just wanted to know some pros and cons all our software will work with terminal server. we will only have about 10 use that need to connect and more than likely no more than 3 at one time. also i think we might go VOIP in the near future. we have a pri line for our phones right now and use all 23 lines for voice. about 45 people in the office right now.
Thanks for helping i am not that happy with our computer it company we have now and don't completely trust them

I'm in the market for a new computer and I'm seeking some advice to help me decide between 2 good deals I've come across. Here's what I'm looking at:

AMD Athlon II 635 (2.9GHz) Quad-Core, 6GB DDR3, 1TB SATA II Hard Drive (5400RPM), Integrated ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics

AMD Phenom II 945 (3.0GHz) Quad-Core, 8GB Memory DDR2, 1TB SATA II Hard Drive (7200RPM), Integrated ATI Radeon HD 3100 graphics

Both systems are $600, run Windows 7 Home Premium, and seem otherwise pretty similar, I'm already planning on adding a graphics card and better power supply.

So it's pretty clear both have pros and cons. Athlon II 635 vs Phenom II 945, 6GB DDR3 vs 8GB DDR2, 5400rpm vs 7200rpm drive, and the integrated graphics cards (from what I can tell the 3100 has been around for a long time, too long?)

Thanks for any advice, or even better finds for $600.

A:Need help deciding

1) I take it then you have no interest in building your own system?

2) what will you use it for?
3) The DDR2 alone eliminates that one

I'm building a pc from scratch for gaming and Photoshop and I need to decide between rather to order the I7-3770K from a friend from the U.S in late May with a discount that he has from Intel for just 169$+shipping. Or wait for my uncle to arrive from China in July and he can bring me I7-4770K or i5-4670K (they will probably be corresponding price). So I need to decide between i5-4670K (227$) and i7-3770K.(169$)
Will the i5-4670K be better then i7-3770K? What do you recommend to buy?
What about the Z78 boards and new chipset will they be better then the current?
In June there will be cheap mobos or only hi-end?

A:Help deciding which CPU to buy

The 3770K should still be betther than the unreleased i5 part. However, that price you're getting it at ($169??) seems too good to be true. You might be getting ripped off.

If you can wait, I'd wait until Haswell is launched to see what happens.

Here lies my dilemma
On one hand if I use XP I get 5.1 Surround sound when listening to online radio or watching dvd's.

On the other hand I love the speed of vista and the overall way it works, it is very nice operating system but when I use 5.1 mode I get the weirdest sound on xfi and a microphone that echo's inside games that use voip and other sound recording/morphing apps.

To better explain this I have an altec lansing 251B 5.1 surround sound setup which sounds fantastic when played thru XP x86 when combined with my XFI extreme music. When I use this great audio setup in vista I sometimes am lucky to get full 5.1 surround sound in certain apps and movies or radio stations.

Whats weird about this is, my audio normally comes out of my center and my left channels which produces a roll your eyes upsetting left fade effect.

I just dumped vista and installed XP, but I really want to use vista however I don't understand why or even how to fix 5.1 with XFI in vista. Some help would be much appreciated, because man do I notice the difference of slowness in xp now that I am back to using it. I'd prefer to use vista if I can get my 5.1 to work properly

There must be some trick with XFI and the audio control panel or even the creative panel application which I don't mind installing should I need to in order to fix it.

In vista my apps and system just responded faster and my sata transferred at 60-65mb on file copies.

A:Some help deciding

Hi 08Roush- Your problem sounds like a driver issue. If you have installed the latest driver/s for your setup, there may in fact be a compatibility problem with the 64 bit OS. Posting your specific hardware here might aid further in trouble shooting. Here are a couple links I found that may help you also:

Just wondered if anyone had any pointers really i am trying the 32bit version of 7 on my laptop i have been pottering around on it since i got it last week, most things i use installed so far work fine and tbh i am impressed up to this point.

However and here's the question the only pc i have running Vista is my main gaming rig which runs Vista 64-Bit and i was wondering weather its worth getting rid of that to run Windows 7 64bit instead, i had a look around google to see if i could get an idea but not had much look really was just wondering what anyone thought

Oh and i not really bothed about duel booting.

I will note the spec's down of my main rig incase anyone is aware od any issues

24inch Monitor (had to res issues in beta with this)
Q9450 @3.20Ghz
4GB Mem
2x 9800GX2 in Quad SLI
Creative Soundblaster X FI Sound Card (on a side note this has NEVER run right on Vista with quad sli on it pops crackes and drags on the FPS)
2x 750GB Drives in Raid-0

Thanks for any help

A:A Little Help Deciding

Hi Vapo, Welcome to forum,

I would hold onto Vista for the simple reason Windows Seven is a RC and you will not be able to upgrade from it once the RTM is out. No matter what, you'll have to revert back to vista or buy windows seven and do a Clean ReInstall. If anything, I would install a fresh copy of the 64 bit in place of the 32 bit Seven just to test it.

It seems many people aren't planning ahead far enough or don't realize they won't be able to keep a fully working RC on there PC. According to ms, user's will not be able to use a RTM license key or upgrade to RTM from the RC. A clean install is in everybody's future.

I have a dell vostro 200, which came with the FoxConn G33M02 mobo, and a 300w PSU. I have upgraded the CPU to the Intel Wolfdale E8200, dual core @ 2.66 GHz. My ram is kinda screwy, for a total of 3gb I have 2x 512mb @ 333 MHz and 1x 2048mb @400 MHz. I plan to upgrade the ram, but ddr2 ram is crazy expensive for some reason. Right now upgrading the PSU or ram is out of the question, I just need a video card to play some relatively basic games. Like Prime World from Nival, and once I buy it Guild Wars 2, also Diablo 3.

I have a Radeon HD 5450 "silent" card in my build at the moment and my WEI is pathetic an d looks to be a graphics hold up.

Now I am not graphic savvy and have an idea that Radeon is better than NVidia or so my son tells me they are but am not planning on a lot of gaming just the usual flight / submarine sims and don't want to go spending squillions on a card that I would not be getting the use out of except for what I said and perhaps enhancing the screen.

Perhaps if I had a reasonable one I could be tempted into some of that fancy graphic stuff for sigs etc

So what brand and what sort of specs would I be looking for please?

A:Deciding on a GPU

What's your budget? Maybe list a high and low dollar amount so we have a range.

Ati is rolling out their 7xxx series and there are already some good deals available for the 6xxx series cards. Maximum PC lists my card (the 6870) as the best budget card on their list.

Maximum PC | XFX Radeon HD 6870 Review

(Ignore the price they have listed. I paid about $220 a year ago and with rebate they are now in the $170 range and still falling.) - XFX Double D HD-687A-ZDFC Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

If you want to compare it to pricier stuff, here is the whole works:

Best of the Best - Maximum PC-approved hardware and components for your rig building needs | Maximum PC

A list of of the exact games you'll be playing could help further fine-tune recommendations.

I should also mention that with the ongoing video card war still hot, Nvidia has some good deals, too.

Hello everyone, my name is Kyle. Apparently I am quite new to this forum, I just thought I'd introduce myself. Anyways.

Here's my deal. I am a freshmen in college at Virginia Commonwealth University. I have built my own desktop rig and am quite familiar with the components and functionality of computers, but I have a new venture: I need a laptop for school.

After a lot of reviewing and reading, I have come to like the Dell Inspiron 13 notebook. It seems like it can do what I need it to. This is what I want from my laptop:

> I hate lag, and RAM issues, so lotsa RAM.
> I need this for internet, I have a linksys wireless N (WRT160N) router, so a compatible notebook chipset would be quite desirable.
> I want to play some casual games, but I don't think I'll try for much FPS games or very graphically demanding games.
> As an engineering student, I will be needing to use AutoCAD.
> Price isn't so much of an issue, I just want it to last.
> I want long battery life and an efficient, cooler processor that won't overheat.

On Dell's website, they can configure the Dell Inspiron 13 between these options:

Intel Core 2 Duo T5800
Intel Core 2 Duo T8100
Intel Core 2 Duo T8300
Intel Pentium Dual Core T3200

*The T3200 and the T5800 are right out because of the 65nm chips and their inefficiency. I was leaning towards either the 8100 or the 8300. The 8300 costs $50 more for 300mhz more. Is it worth it? Will it run much hotter... Read more

A:I need help deciding.

If you think you will want XP, go to the For Office > Small & Medium Business section of the Dell website where you can still get XP on some Vostro and Latitude models.

Note that if you buy a laptop with Vista and later decide on XP, you may not be able to find drivers, depending on the laptop model (my son experienced this with a Gateway laptop that now has no wireless or sound capability).

I'm from Australia and have limited amount of money to spend on a new system. I am thinking about an :

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor
ASUS A8N-E Socket 939 NForce 4 Ultra

I need memory and a case, as I already have a graphics card, harddrive, monitor, sound card, speaker etc. I will use this computer for multi-tasking (minimal gaming and no draining programs like video editing etc). But I have a few questions first:

1. I need a cheap case, how much power will I need for the PSU: 300w, 350w, 400w or more?

2. With memory, will I need DDR ram?

3. Is the only difference between the NForce Ultra and SLI the extra PCI-Ex slot?

Thanks in advance,

I have just built a 64 bit system using a 450watt psu and it works, howerver, i reccomend u get the most powerful psu u can afford.
With memmory, get the best u can afford as the quicker the memmory the better.
Sli allows u to use 2 graphics card together however, they must be identical for it to work.
Lastly, as the 64bit tech is still new there are a few compatability issues. For example, the system that i built, the disk that came with the mobo is absolutely useless as it wont run the installer program at all. Ive downloaded the drivers but some work and some dont (sata is useless at the mo).

Graphics Card - GIGABYTE GV-R777OC-2GI Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition 2GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready Video Card

If I build the above I will take the DVD, card reader and the 1TB WD Blk HDD from the 540 and install in the build. By doing this I keep my costs around $800... the XPS-8700 is $850.

ALSO, if I build, I have a few questions...
(1) are the above parts compatible?
(2) do I buy a SSD as my master HD and my WD Blk as my slave?

my friend wants me to fix his computer. Yesterday when I first played with it, it started up until it got to the Windows XP Professional logo, then it rebooted everytime. So i decided to try and format it. Today I brought my disk from home, and it inspects all the configurations fine, but when i choose format using NTFS it says "Setup was unable to format the partition. The disk may be damaged. Make sure the drive is switched on and properly connected." I'm sure the drive is connected fine, because i dont think he would ever open it himself and look. But i did open it and everything looks fine to me. I also tried to format with the NTFS (Quick), and the same thing. I told him that his drive is probably crashed. Its a Pentium 2, Gateway 2000, not sure of the specs, but when the computer starts it says:

0640K System RAM passed
0095K Extended RAM passed
0512k Cache SRAM Passed

While formating there is 6,142MB (6GB) free. And thats all thec computer has is 6 GB of memory. I told him that it would be better if you bought a new computer. So what do you guys think? This computer dead? or just needs a new HDD?

Were you happy with the acer when you first got it? Its a laptop so installing a new graphic card may be difficult at best and more than likely impossible. Your current graphics chipset may even be built into the motherboard. If the performance has slowed down and you liked it when you first got it, a clean install would resotre that performance.

Mostly minor things. 64 bit is a tad faster and can recognize more ram than 32 bit can. 32 bit recognizes around 3.3ish gigs of ram but that's more than you'll need. I always laugh when people buy computers with something like 8gb of ram - you'll hardly go over 3gigs EVER.

My budget is going to be around $500-$600 dollars.

I was really thinking the 680 4gb instead of 2gb but I'm not quite sure if I am going to need the extra ram. I use two monitors but only one for gaming at 1440x900. I play DayZ, Battlefield 3, and other latest games and whatever is coming out. (Battlefield 4 etc).

Because I need to get a new quality PSU I don't know if I will be able to afford a 680 4gb or a 2gb. I was looking at the Radeon 7970 and was wondering what would be the difference besides I will be saving money. Same with the 660ti which I heard you could overclock it to have the same performance as the 680. (Is that true?) And what would be the big difference of getting a 670 4gb or 2gb opposed to the 680?

Okay, so I've been looking and shopping around for a laptop recently, and have narrowed it down to 3-4 specific ones. They are all approximately within the same price range, so price isn't a reall matter to me at the moment, but I would like to know which would probably be the best for my money, such as graphics card, processor, battery life, etc. This will technically be the first laptop I buy, so I want to double check with others to make sure I don't make a mistake. I'm also not familiar with the laptop versions of graphics cards and processors, so I don't know exactly what I'm looking for.

I'm mainly planning on using the laptop for Internet, writing, college, watching movies and videos, video editing, and on the go, although I will also put a few PC games (not high end games like Crysis) on there as well so I can play some of my favorite games without my desktop, so I'll need a card strong enough for that. I'm overall just looking for the best all around laptop from those below. I wouldn't want to pay more money for something less powerful.

They are about the same price, but the 3400+ comes with a free mobo so it is actually $50 cheaper. The Intel is dual-core, Athlon single. Intel is 2.66GHz, Athlon is 2.4GHz. Intel is 533MHz FSB, Athlon is 800Mhz FSB.

Seems like a toss-up to me, any undiscriminating suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks

Hey guys, I'm going to order my new setup either tomorrow or friday, but I'm hung up on what cpu/combo to get. Here's what I've narrowed it down to....

For the mobo...I'd like to have support for SATAII for the 2x hitachi drives..SLI is not necessary because I plan on upgrading a few months down the road...but I have some questios concerning the raid on these boards.......

The UT nF4 SLI-DR and nF4 SLI-DR have " NV RAID 0/1/0+1 JBOD", whereas the Ultra-D only has "raid 0/1" ..what's the difference in the two? Also, the firs two mobos (ut/nf4 sli-dr) have an additional sata raid and additional raid controller "sli 3114", but the Ultra-D doesn't...will any of this effect the performance of the hitachi sataII hdds in raid 0?

For the cpu...I'm new to overclocking, but I'm willing to take the time to learn/test so I'd like to get it to 2.4ghz or if higher is possible (stable) on stock heatsink/fan or si-120/120mm fan...

Since I'll be upgrading later on I wanted to keep this as close to $1000 as possible or maybe a little over...the rest of the computer is listed in my sig (price for those items is $627) so for the remaining money I'd like to get the best cpu/mobo combo possible...I'm open to other suggestions on the rest of the comp parts too, but I... OK, I'm finally going to get my laptop, probably next weekend. Just a few minutes ago, I was looking at two at FutureShop. I was deciding between a Toshiba and a Compaq. Now the Compaq looks a hell of a lot better, it has slightly better specs and comes with more software installed. So, I wanted to get that one, but the guy there tells me that the Compaq laptops are very fragile and that he's always having to repair Compaqs. So I just wanted to see what some other people thought about the Compaqs. Can anyone give me some advice?

Getting ready to upgrade me and my girlfriends video cards this weekend and in an effort to avoid the ever so popular 15% restocking fees I was wondering which drivers are less botched up on Windows 7 64-bit at present?

We both have 9600 GT's (G94) at the moment but I'm leaning towards ATI since we just upgraded our motherboards and it has the 780G chipset. No intrest in hybrid crossfire, just vaguely remember hearing nvidia and ATi don't mesh well together. Not rulling out Nvidia all together on that alone though.

The 9600GT's we have are both 512 DDR3 with cheap stock reference coolers. From what I heard it's better to have a higher amount (1GB) of slower (DDR2) memory with larger monitors than less (512mb) of faster (DDR3) memory. Is this true?

Here's the two cards Im looking at,

I'm looking to get a laptop to basically replace my desktop PC. I really like the macbook pro, but I don't have the kind of money to buy it, and I'm not a big fan of apple or macs. I have also looked at HP, the pavilion dv5t series with the intel core 2 duo 8600 (2.4 Ghz), the 1680 x 1050 display (is the infinity screen nice?), 3GB memory, 512MB 9600 GT, 250 GB HDD. Here's the link if you want to see it . These are really the only two I've looked at so far. I spend a lot of time online, and will also probably be doing some light gaming, and a lot of music and movies. I'd like to be in about the $1300 range when I'm done (although less is better). Any input would be great. Thanks.

A:Help deciding on a laptop

Your link doesn't work, although from the specs it doesn't look too bad. It'd be better going for one with an 8600 series video card, since it'd be cheaper and more suited to light gaming.

I am having intel 845 MB with P4 2.4GHZ CPU, 512 MB DR 266 RAM and ATI Radeon 9500 PRO 128 MB Graphics card. I have tried video editing with this setup (using pinnacle 8 / Adobe premiere pro) but finding rendering takes lot of time and even the final quality is not up to mark.

I am thinking of upgrading my system. Should I go for a new MB with DDR 400 support. As I am having a decent 8x AGP card will you please help me in deciding the best value for money upgrade. Is it worth to continue with present graphics card or should I go for a total new system with PCI Express card.

Thank you in advance

A:help deciding upgrade

personally i would go with a better graphics card first due to the fact that video editing is one of the most graphic intensive things you can do and all though your card is 8x agp and works good it really doesnt have the hardware features that you would need to do major video editing however faster ram and a faster processor would also help if you a very serious about it. a lady who lives right above me who does video editing for a living has a dual xeon processor chip running at 3.4 ghz with 3 gig of ram and her computer still gets lagged down every now and then. good luck

Hi everyone. I have spent days now trudging through laptop specs and deals and think I have narrowed my search down to 2, I am open to any suggestions however!
Requirements - for my 16 year old son (birthday present for the big 16!) for GCSE's and college. I want it to run as fast as possible for my budget but he has an Xbox one for gaming so that is not a consideration. I am aware though that he may like to play some of the PC based civ games. I would like lots of storage too.
Budget - £300 or under. I am trying to be realistic about what we can get for that money and get the best and most reliable machine.
I have found these two which look promising but can't decide (as I said though I am very grateful for any other other suggestions) I don't want to buy second hand.

A:» Help Deciding on a tower Pc

Do you have a budget for this?

You don't mention hard drives. You should certainly get an SSD for at least Windows and applications. You can use an ordinary hard drive to store data.

I don't game, but I'd guess gaming types would tell you to emphasize the graphics card. There are several steps above the GTX660 that you could consider, but it may be perfectly fine for the games he intends to play. I have no idea.

What resolution will he use?

An i7-4790 would likely be considered overkill for gaming, but if it's within your budget, knock yourself out.

Likewise with 16 GB of RAM rather than 8.

What case do you have in mind?

What power supply?

I assume overclocking is not on your agenda since you haven't chosen a K series processor. In that case, there's no reason to splurge on a Z97 motherboard.

And the pathetic little power supply unit (psu) would almost certainly die and take the mobo out with it!!!

hello all, i am currently looking into a paid antivirus program for my pc. i've done plenty of virus cleanouts here at my job and we recommend and install kaspersky for our customers but since the newest version i haven't been satisfied with the program, and i am seeing a lot of pcs coming back with virus issues even with kaspersky so now i am looking into something different.
after reviewing the latest av comparatives ( i'm interested in eset smart security or bitdefender internet security. i was considering trend micro but it is very lacking in options and a bit too simplistic for me, not a fan. i'm running a trial of bitdefender at the moment and it seems perfectly fine but people really seem to hate on it for one reason or another. eset smart security i haven't particularly heard bad things about but it seems their detection rates aren't quite as good. i'll test it later if they have a trial.
if the issue with bitdefender is that it's "heavier" but has better detection rates doesn't bother me honestly. another option that could work is malwarebytes premium, but it doesn't seem particularly user friendly and lacks some of the nicer features of the bigger programs.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not an anti-virus program nor should it be used as a replacement. Malwarebytes does not act as a real-time protection scanner for every file like anti-virus software so it is intended to be a supplement, not a substitute. The following quote is a statement from the Malwarebytes Team.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not meant to be a replacement for antivirus software. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a complementary but essential program which detects and removes zero-day malware and "Malware in the Wild". This includes malicious programs and files, such as viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits, dialers, spyware, and rogue applications that many antivirus programs do not detect or cannot fully remove. I need to get the right kind of memory for the mobo and processor in my sig, the only problem I have is the Processor is 333Mhz FSB and I would like DDR400 (which my mobo supports) installed. Does the Processor FSB matter in terms of memory? I am looking at,, is this good memory? If anyone has any suggestions, please write them down. Thanks again guys and gals.

A:Need Help Deciding On Right Memory

As long as the memory is as fast or faster then your CPU FSB you will be fine. With motherboards that use NForce chipsets its best to have the memory syncronized with the CPU for best performance - you can lower the speed of PC3200 to 333Mhz in the BIOS on quality motherboards. PC3200 would also allow better overclocking of your CPU's FSB as its designed to run at 400Mhz already.

The RAM is selcted is ok, but not the best - it has a latency of 3, whereas really good ram has lower latencies like 2.5. If you want really good RAM check of Corsair twin sets for Dual-Channel.

you would need to have a long zoom for safari , and that camera with a 20x zoom of 24mm x 480mm
should be OK, as it provides a long zoom and high ISO _ BUT Quality maybe worth seeing a review
then you need a good ISO range and speed , which again you have a good range -

HOWEVER, it will depend on the sort of quality using the camera at the extremes of zoom and higher ISO actually produce

But they do not appear to have any reviews available

Take a look at the few PCI cards at anything above $60 and 128 MB will be good... the more you spend, the better they are... They may even have a couple of 256 MB cards left.
They do not have any bad cards... but it is a matter of cost.

Giga-byte GA-7 VAX
ATI 9800 Radeon Pro

AMD Athlon XP 2000 (1.67 GHz)

So I just wanna give my system a little bit of a boost. I'm thinking maybe something like an AMD Athlon XP 2700 to get my computer up to a 2.0 GHz speed, just not sure if it's worth it. Also I'm looking at some of these "Barton" processors that AMD has. What's the scoop on them? Would I be better with going with a Barton than a regular Athlon XP?

Let me know what you all think.

A:Need some help deciding on new AMD Processor

im not sure it quite works like that rick. i had a 2500+ barton last year, well known as the best overclocker, which you can get up to over 3200+ speeds. "Barton Support" isnt quoted anywhere, i think you'll find most boards, given a sufficient FSB will work, if not at full pace. the only difference of course is the clock speed and the L2 cache. in all honesty, they ARE better, but buy the fastest you can afford, the 3200 is the top at the mo, and damn it's fast.

BUT you must make sure your board supports a 400MHz FSB for the 3200. (though it'll run at 333 if you ask it, but slower)

why not get a 64? - damn good.
the 3000-64 isnt much more than a 3200+ barton XP.

Choices!!!!!!! good luck

The second bundle is great. The gpu sucks though. If I was on a computer I could recommend parts better, but I am on my phone (and from memory) so I will try my best. This is what I would recommend:
Cpu: Amd fx6350 ($140)
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 r2.0 ($100)
CPU cooler: hyper 212 Evo ($35)
Ram: corsair vengeance 2x4gb ($75)
Gpu: evga gtx 650ti boost ($180)
PSU: corsair tx650 v2 ($90)
HDD: wd caviar black ($120)
Case: corsair 200r ($50)

Hi. I'm a student, so I don't have the kind of money to buy licensed software (norton, for example, costs about 2000, here). So I'm sort of dependent on freeware.

I have a vista laptop that -although no resource-strapped (I upgraded to 1.5GBDDR2), I still like to keep as fast as possible. So for my security needs I've been using AVG Anti-Virus free and SpyBot-S&D (1.5)... Is this enough?

It's been a recommendation mentioned to me that I might benefit from installing more than one Anti-Spyware, namely AVG Anti-SW, and Ad-Aware free... Are they really necessary? If it is a good idea to install more than one, maybe I should just choose one more- if so, which is better, the AVG Anti-SPyware or Ad-Aware?

I dislike having a lot of programs running in the background. In fact, upon start-up, the only application that start are my objectdock, AVG-AV, and Spybot.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Hey guys.
So, more and more, I find myself using devices that NEEDS a wireless connection. So, I was thinking of buying a wireless router. We already have a router, but it's wired only. The one I was eye-ing was this one : - Rosewill RNX-N150RT IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g, IEEE802.11n Draft 2 Up to 150Mbps Wireless Data Rates 1 x 10/100M WAN; 4 x 10/100 LAN

Now, you might say "Why not go with this one? It has features x and y!". The thing is that I don't want any extra features... I only need those basic needs : firewall, wired network, wireless network + security and DNS settings (for OpenDNS). What the wireless will be for is... to connect my Nintendo 3DS. Yes, a Nintendo 3DS. Not a laptop or other computer. So I don't need Tomato or whatever other 3rd party firmware.

So, advices?

P.S Budget is 40-45$

That one is not true wireless N @ 150 mbps, you should look for one that is capable of 300 Mbps, especially for online game play...

I was reading, and I was wondering what would everyone prefer on an EVGA 790i Ultra FTW Edition Motherboard. I heard some debate on this and I'm not too sure. I'd be using it for running Crysis on Max Resoultion, Best Graphical Settings, Watching HD Movies, Multimedia, pretty much everything. Probably in Dual Display's, 22" each. Disreguard the price, just wondering the performance.

I'm getting a FireWire 400 PCI add-on for a Dell Vostro 400 at my work and I have to order it through Office Depot. I've narrowed it down to the two below but I'm unsure if there is any difference between them as far as reliability (from the manufacturer) as I've never really heard of either company. I'm gonna be using the add-on for transferring footage from a camcorder. So my question is, which would you buy from the two below?

I'm sure one will work as good as the other, but you'll likely get better support from Siig if you ever need it.

I have been looking at getting a new graphics card and was originally looking at the eVGA 7600GT CO and KO. By the way, what is the difference between CO and KO, and which is better?

Then I found out that the eVGA was having some overheating issues so I began looking at some VGA coolers for about $25.

From there I was thinking if I went to another brand such as XFX or PNY, that the overheating may not happen.

Would you guys suggest getting an eVGA with a 3rd party heatsink (or have you guys had great success with the stock cooler?) or should I get an XFX or PNY 7600gt?

I am assuming that the XFX and PNY don't have as bad of overheating problems from the customer reviews. Which brand is best, eVGA, XFX, or PNY?

What is you guys advice to this dilemma? What would you do? Other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks guys.

Hi guys and gals,

I was going to build a new comp for my mom, then decided to give her my computer
(P4 2.8GHz/ 1.5MB ddr533 /80GB HD/ cd-rw/fx5600 256MB) to replace her old pentium3 500MHz computer. That is more power then she'll need, and not enough for what I need. So I'm going to build a new computer for myself

My wife reacently got into a fender-bender, and she was afraid I would be mad at her, and in a moment of weakness, she said I can go ahead and get a new computer... and I latched onto that like all hell, lol... if your married, then you know what I'm talking about, so since I have the masters .. er .. I mean wifes ok, then its build time!!

Heres the deal. I want to build on a lower budget (I guess we all do) but I want this build to last a while. I am going to eventually get a DX10 vid card, but that will be later, I am waiting for more options, and I'd like to see what ATI brings to the table... so for now I will be getting an ATI DX9 card... but thats for later.I dont know if it makes a difference in the MB and CPU, but I will probally put an ATI card in this build when its upgraded later.
Today I want to talk about CPUs and MBs.. I am trying to decide between 2 CPUs and 2 MBs for this build. Here they are.

I have a buddy that works on a specific website. He must have multiple windows/tabs open and is running scripts. I can't give anything specific because its not my work... The question is: What would be a good processor for running multiple scripts on multiple pages. Currently he is doing his work on 2 computers, but would like to have just one computer.

I was thinking an i7 for his troubles but i can't be too sure that it will be flawless. On newegg there is an i7 sandy bridge that has 6 cores and is about $500. Price is not an issue, but i figured that going with an Ivy bridge would be better... The ivy bridge is only 4 cores and about 200 cheaper.. What do you guys think?

I have been told my some people that the new version of IE is just horrible and that Google Chrome just sort of does it own thing from time to time. Can somebody please give me some input?

Try these two. You can always uninstall or keep both. User preference. For what it is worth I've used Firefox since 2004.
