Have Windows 7 automatically switch to LAN when cable is plugged in and switch to wireless when it's removed

Q: Have Windows 7 automatically switch to LAN when cable is plugged in and switch to wireless when it's removed

I have Windows 7 Professional on my PC. In the first load I had, the PC should automatically detect if the LAN cable was plugged in, turn off the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable was now in use.
Unfortunately, I had to reload my PC, and since then I can't get it to do it again.
So, what I'd like to achieve is this: Have Windows automatically detect when the cable is plugged in, turn of the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable is in use - and, obviously, vice versa.
Can someone tell me what I need to do, please?

A: Have Windows 7 automatically switch to LAN when cable is plugged in and switch to wireless when it's removed

Hi,
There are two methods can help you.
1. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings> and right click your wired and wireless adapters one at a time to change the properties. Select IPv4, click <Properties>
then click <Advanced>. For each one, clear the "Automatic metric" check box and assign the metric value manually. Setting your wired adapter?s metric value lower than wireless adapter one, such as ?1? for wired adapter and ?2? for wired adapter.

2. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings>,
hold down 'alt' to bring up the "File" menu, select "Advanced", select
"Advanced Settings" from the dropdown menu, adjust the priority of your wired adapter higher than your wireless adapter in the "Advanced Settings" window under the "Adapters and Bindings" tab.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click ?Mark as Answer? on the post that helps you, and to click ?Unmark as Answer? if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

Hi everyone, I searched through the forums but couldn't really find what I was looking for.

Currently we have a DHCP server set up to a switch, that has a special line connecting to a switch in our shop which is just across our back lot, giving network access to the few computers over there. They recently put in a new machine that needs network access, but they have already accidentally cut two ethernet cords. I'm looking to provide a wireless solution for the machine, but I don't want to have to spend a few thousand dollars on a large wireless switch.

Can I plug a wireless router into the switch in our shop, and essentially turn it into a wireless bridge, or is there another, simpler way to do this?

If this has already been answered, sorry for missing it!

Thanks!

While you could use a router, or even configure the router to act as an access point, why not just buy a true access point? They start at $27: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCate...ame=Wireless-AP-Bridges-Repeaters&Order=PRICE

Hello,

I recently switched from DSL to cable. No issues on DSL. Since switching to cable, I haven't been able to connect more than one computer to the wireless access point at one time. I have three computers, one running W7, one on xp, and one on Vista. All three of the computers have been able to connect to the WAP when connecting alone.

I am using a wap54g linksys access point. Setup is internet -- coax -- cable modem -- ethernet -- wireless access point

A:Cannot Connect More Than One Computer to Wireless Access Point, After Switch to Cable

I suspect that your old DSL modem had built in router capabilities and your new cable modem either does not have router capabilities or has them disabled and is operating as a simple bridge or gateway. In either case, the connecting computer is getting a public IP address assigned to it. Most residential broadband service comes with only one available (and usually dynamic) public IP address per customer.

If possible you, should see if you can configure your modem to operate as a router with Network Address Translation (NAT). If not, you may need to replace your wireless access point with a wireless router.

hello,
As my PC will be moved upstairs soon where there is no way to get a ethernet cable any more,
I will be forced to go wireless...
I have never wanted it and never used it except on my mothers laptop witch is obviously built-in.
So my experience with wireless stuff is very low...

some fact that may play a role for your comments:
-from PC to modem/router threw the walls will be about 8 yards max.
-there is a chimney in the direct path from PC to modem/router.
-there is barely any metals used in the house although the modem is placed next to the water-main.
-the laptop of my mother never had any issues and is about 2 years old cant tell you the what hardware it used ATM.

Now what I want:
-I want my 6.4 MB/sec speed (other wireless devices dont play any role > mom laptop (80% facebook and 5% mails and 5% searching the web and the rest is youtube lol ; and the smart TV really doesn't do anything except for streaming some video clips very rarely.

- I NEVER want to get disconnected!! not even for a millisecond if you catch my drift.

- I prefer an internal piece of hardware witch I have a PCI slot for with the room. Although I would also like to be able to give internet to multiple PC's or whatever , ya never know ; LAN party for example...
i do realize a switch would suffice but I'll just give you everything because I know there are many ways to go wireless. just dont know crap about them...

Need to no if I have this right

they have a dsl modem going to a Linksys router to a 24 port switch then to a little 4 port switch. sure, so then Would it be modem to router then router to any port on the big switch or is there an uplink port on the big switch it should go to? then you would hook a cat5e from one of the regular ports on the 24 port switch and run it to the uplink port on the 4 port switch need to no if the whole sequence is right. Hope someone can help, john will told me the cable would go from the big switch to the uplink on the small switch but I am wondering if I have it all right or not and wonderiing about from the router to the 24 port switch does the cable just go in a regular port in the big switch or if there is an uplink port does it go there. Hope you can understand my rambleing here. Thanks (please don't send me to a link) just need to no modem to router to regular port or uplink port on 24 port switch then from regular port on 24 port switch to uplink port on the 4 port switch. Thanks

A:Solved: Windows xp hookup question for modem, router, switch, to switch?

Router to uplink port on 24 port switch, and then normal port on the 24 port switch to uplink port on the second 4 port switch. An auto-MDX port on a device negates the need to worry about uplink ports for that particular cable connection.

One question I need to know

If you go from DSL modem to Router then Router to switch
my question is then
If I wanted to hook another mini linksys switch into the bigger switch would you run the cat5e cable from the first switch to a reg port in the second switch or would you run it to the uplink port and then hook the 1 or 2 computers into the reg ports of the second switch.??

Dear Support,

I have an in-house web application that accesses Windows network locations, using something like this:

<a href: file://<file-location>>Click here</a>

The internal website is added to Trusted Sites, with security settings to allow the application to open folders/files within our network.

In Internet Explorer, on Windows 7, this works fine.
On Windows 10, although this still works fine in Internet Explorer (without any messages), Edge prompts the user to confirm the irritating Did you mean to switch apps? message.
Can this be removed/overwritten/anything?!

Thanks in advance

Yes i know it should be other way around, but i did this because i tried everything on the d-link dir-655 to get portforwarding and krap even dmz and nothing so i put my main comp on switch so people could join mt civ4 games hosting. However i have a network it works but it slow since the router is plugged into the switch. I cord goes from switch to wan port on router. I also have a second comp and an xbox i want to have assigned ips. Shaw only assigned 2. Is there a better way because when 2nd comp is in switch file transfer is way faster when it no it lik 10mb/s max very slow. The main comp cant detect other comp behind router. The 2nd comp can connect to main comp infront of router fine. Speeds main issue and jsut wondering if there a better way that wont screw me hosting games.

How old is the switch? If it is a 10mb switch then you will be limited to that.

I was having trouble with my pavilion burning up hard drives so I purchased a new one rather than replacing it with the same one HP always done. I purchased the hard drive from Best Buy and they installed it into my laptop. I then loaded the OS and applications and drivers using the original recovery disks provided by HP. After that I updated windows XP until all the updates were completed.
My problem is that the computer doesn't recognize usb mouses. I tried using my Razer Diamondback and it wouldn't recognize the hardware. After using the driver install disc provided with the mouse it still wouldn't work. I also attempted to download the lastest drivers directly from the website and that wouldn't work. I've had two other people who are much more computer literate than myself look at the computer and they couldn't figure out the problem either. It appears that it is only a problem with mice. I tried another mouse and it didn't work either. Also it recognized other usb 2.0 equipment just not mice. My friend also said that with the current XP installation service pack 2 it should automatically recognize most usb devices even with the driver disks. Any help into what could be causing this problem would be appreciated.

A:Laptop not recognizing mouse plugged into usb port after hd switch

Hi friend....

The most likely to happen in your case is that while repairing your system they reseted CMOS/BIOS or they updated it (it usually resets itself to defaults after update). In BIOS there is an option for usb keyboard and mouse support. Since you have a laptop this option could be by default disabled. Hopefully, getting into BIOS and enabling usb mouse support will do the job! This option is more likely to be found in the "integrated peripherals" section of your BIOS setup. Then exit and save. Usually to access BIOS you have to press DEL during the POST/startup screen. You may have came across the message "Press DEL to enter setup". I cannot know many details since BIOSes have differences between computers especially laptops. Of course go ahead on asking questions if you want me to be more specific on something.

Just want to know if theres a way to set it so say if I left my user aco**** on and then it went to screensave that when I moved the mouse it would go to the switch user screen. So my account can still be logged on about it will show the user aco****s screen when I move the mouse/wake up computer.

I have vehicles with mobile broadband cards in them which provide a wifi connection for laptops in the vehicles. Once the vehicles return to our building, I need them to connect to the building wifi connection automatically (even though it has less wifi signal strength than the mobile broadband cards which are much closer to the laptops in the vehicles). I'm looking to have the laptops see the building network connection and disconnect from the mobile broadband wifi connection, and connect to the building wifi. This cannot be accomplished with Windows network preference ordering, and "connect to a more preferred network if available" does not seem to work either, as the building wifi connection does not have a signal strength as strong as the mobile broadband cards.

Hi I have an   HP Pavilion G6 2210sa withan Intel Centrino Wireless N 1030 wifi card,  runing Windows 10 x64 fresh installation Bios Version F.26 I am having issues with wireless connectivity. In device manager there are no error symbols. I can connect via ethernet with no problem. When I go into the bios F.26 and reset to default settings and start windows 10, The adapter functions fine and i'm able to connect to wireless networks. Upon restarting the laptop I'm faced with the original issue the f12 key changes to orange, and stays orange toggling from airplane mode to wifi mode. Windows trouble shooting suggests that the wireless capability is turned off. It suggests to turn the wireless capability back on using the function keys (F12). I do this and cannot connection to any wireless networks. I have prevented the computer turning off the wifi adapter power in device manager. Please could you suggest a solution?? Many Thanks in advance

Hello,

I have a need for, upon bootup, for one user account to logon automatically so that it can run some programs, then to have another user account logon automatically. Essentially the process would be to auto logon the first user (must always be the same one) and then automatically switch users to logon to the second user.

The programs that I need to run CAN be run as a service, however I lose the ability to control them in a user account when the need arises - they weren't designed to run as a service. So, autologon and startup programs is my current method. Now, however, I need it to logon on to a second account automatically.

Regards,
Terry

Friends, I have a subform with two fields yes / no. How do you select only one field to yes?
That is, if the "A" is set to yes, you can not mark the field "B" to yes, this example is only possible
mark the field "B" to yes, after clearing the field "A".

And the reverse, ie, if the "B" is marked
and yes, you can not mark the field "A" to yes, this example is only possible
mark the field "A" after clearing the field "B".

I tried this two codes:

Private Sub Form_Current()

If Me.FieldA = -1 Then
Me.FieldB.Locked = True
End If

If Me.FieldB = -1 Then
Me.FieldA.Locked = True
End If

End Sub

Private Sub Form_Current()

If Me.FieldA = -1 Then
Me.FieldB = 0
End If

If Me.FieldB = -1 Then
Me.FieldA = 0
End If

End Sub
In the first works only with the first two records, the third record from the two fields are locked.

In the second code has no effect.

Thanks for helping.

I have a wireless router connected to my modem, and ALL PC's connect to that for internet.

I also have a gigabit switch I use to transfer data in between several of the machines. I do it quite often and I don't want it eating up the wifi bandwidth.
I have done it before, but it has been a long time and I cannot remember how I forced internet traffic over the wifi and local traffic through the switch
Is the only way to do it to specifically tell Windows to use the IP address of the LAN connection? I know it will work that way, forcing local traffic directly to that IP, but I seem to remember there being an easier way to do this.

Thanks.

Hello, I took the plunge recently and updated my M6700 from Windows 7 Pro to 10 Pro. I think I finally have all the driver kinks worked out, but I have found out that Windows 10 seems to ignore the BIOS setting for the wireless switch on the side of the laptop. I have the BIOS set for the switch to only turn off WLAN and leave bluetooth on since I use a bluetooth mouse.  Under Win 7 this work just fine, but under Win 10 it activates airplane mode and also disables the bluetooth radio. I cant find any setting to change this. Has anyone else run into this?

I have been told this will not work (using a siwtch with a cable modem) However i have used a HUB + Cable modem before with no problems, AND i have quite a few friends who do the same thing..

Right now i have the switch hooked up to the cable modem via a patch cable, and each computer gets a valid WAP IP Address, however no connectivity..

For some unknown reason it has quit changing from sending sound to the speakers to sending it to USB when I plug my USB headset in. Or vica versa when I unplug the headset.

I had this once before and the only solution that worked was to boot into safe mode and select "Open last configuration that worked". However, this time it did not fix the problem.

I have checked the obvious like making sure that nothing was set to mute, or making sure that the headset was working by doing the sound and microphone check.I don't know what to do next.

A:Doesn't switch automatically between speakers and headphon

Sounds like a hardware problem with the headphone jack. Most headphone jacks have a separate contact for sensing and if the contact is stuck the system will think headphones are still plugged in. You can try plugging the headphones in and out fast several times, but generally the jack is not repairable. Many Laptops have a small "daughter board" with the I/O on it and if the jack is the problem that board will have to be replaced.

Hi,

I just got Warpia Stream HD VE edition,

I got it set up and everything, but I was wondering if I could make it so when it's showing on my TV, it automatically switches over to the TV sound.

And when I turn it off, if it could automatically go back to the computers speakers.

Is there anyway I could do this?

Thank you

A:Is there anyway I can make speakers switch to default automatically?

In many systems, the automatic selection is controlled by whether the HDMI cable is plugged in or not.

In my PC, the "speakers" are set as the Default playback device. I have a Radeon HD4850 video card and if I plug in an HDMI cable the HDMI automatically sets itself as the default playback device. If I unplug the HDMI cable it reverts back to the speakers. I also use this for my recording studio PC and if I have my USB connected recording interface device powered on (and connected) that is automatically set as the default playback device. When I power off the recording device it reverts back to the speakers.

Windows 8 has this nice feature where you can set your WiFi connection as a metered connection, which is great because you can reduce the amount of bandwidth your computer uses in many ways, especially when you pay for the bandwidth you use every month.

My case is different though. My internet connection is limited during the day, but it's free 2AM-8AM. i.e, I have unlimited usage 2AM to 8AM, but the rest of the day I pay for my bandwidth beyond a (very meager) limit. I intend to take full advantage of this free internet time.

My question is:

Is it possible to configure Windows 8 to automatically set my WiFi connection to 'non metered' at 2AM and back to 'metered' at 8AM everyday?

Doing this manually is not an option, because I will be fast asleep during this time. my computer will be on though, and all updates and sync operations will be configured to happen during this time when I'm not getting charged by the byte.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks.

I read a few articles on how to make Windows 8 automatically log in, yet I wantWindows 8 to automatically log in to the main account which is password protected AND automatically switch user.

I want to do this because sometimes when I turn on the computer, I walk away then come back to it. You see, the reason why I want to do this is because when I turn on the computer and come back to it to log in my account, there's a little bit of a wait time to load up the account. If the computer automatically logs in and switches the user, then when I come back to the computer, all I have to do is type in the password, and everything is already loaded in that account.

Is that option possible? It must be.

A:Automatically Log In To Main Account & Switch User

Do you really want to switch users or you want your screen password protected?

It sounds to me you want to log on and then after (say 1 minute of being idle) lock the screen. To do this you could set up a new Task Scheduler task to call this: rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation

Enclosed is an example task you can import - copy the xml below into notepad and save it as lockscreen.xml (.xml attachments can't be uploaded here). You can then import it into task scheduler.
You will need to change the user (COMPUTER\USER) and may want to play with the idle time, delay time. You can do this when you import the task - no need to edit the xml.

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?>

(btw my isp allows upto 3 ip's so i know for a fact there wouldnt be an issue there) , i know i could get a router however its more expensive and honestly i dont need the extra features, please help

A:sharing cable modem via switch,possible?

If you actually get three public IP addresses, then a switch will allow you to share the Internet. Note that if they're really public IP addresses, it's very likely that you will NOT be able to share files/printers between the machine. I know that when Comcast issues multiple public IP addresses, they're routinely not in the same subnet, so there will be no communication between the machines.

Truthfully, since a router is only about $20-30 if you do any shopping, there is no reason on this planet that anyone that can afford to have three computers can't afford the extra $10 or so to get a router and solve the problem the right way, rather than the switch.

Okay, here's the deal...

I have 4 computers.

A 2 year old Compac Armada laptop (Pre-loaded with Win2k), with an Intel Pro 100 Mini-PCI (listed under "network adapters" in device manager)

A desktop PC, (dual-processor) home-built out of spare parts (It's a nice one tho), w/ Win2kPro,with a D-Link DGE 500T network adapter.

A second-hand HP Pavillion (This will only be here for a few more weeks tho) also runs w/Win2k, with a Realtec ethernet adapter.

Plus...

A new plain-jane, "white box" PC loaded with WinXP.

I already had the Compaq & Dual Processor machines connected using a 4-port SMC Barracade router, which is connected to my cable modem. I can share files and printers, but it is a very slow and tedious process.

Two days ago I added the HP Pavillion to the network.

The XP machine is not connected to anything at the moment and I haven't decided yet whether to ever permanently add the XP machine to the network. Because my networking skills are still so clumsy, and security would definitely be a top priority with the new machine, since it will contain most of my bookkeeping and other personal information, I want to be more sure of myself
before I add that one on.

What I would like to do at this point is learn about proper networking and network security.

Right now my little network is very slow: it takes 2 or 3 MINUTES just to open a folder, or copy/paste a small file...and you can go to lunch while waiting for something to ... Read more

I was taking apart a HP Compaq nx9010 for the first time and one of the steps was to "Disconnect the 2-wire cable that connects the switchboard PCA to the display lid switch."

Well it didn't want to come out, it wanted to break. So now I have female piece with plastic stuck in it and a couple of wire ends. I want to fix this because I believe that the effect will be the screen not turning off when I shut the lid? Which would be a waste of power.

What should I do? Where can I find a replacement cable? I've been googling but I don't really know what to search for.

Pull out the plastic connector with a small flat screwdriver or possibly some small pliers.

The network card in my PC supports 1Gbit ethernet, my 2TB NAS also supports 1Gbit ethernet, however both of these are currently run through a 100Mbit cable modem/router thus reducing the connection speed. I was wondering if I purchased a 1Gbit switch and connected all my devices directly into that, then connected it into the cable modem, would the PC communicate with the NAS directly via the switch or would it go through the cable modem?

Hopefully my attachement might explain visually what I am trying to do.

I use a cable internet connection. My previous modem had a "standby" switch, so whenever I left the computer I would set the modem to standby, to prevent hackers from having access.

I just got a new modem (internet and telephone) that has to remain on at all times in order for the phones to work. For now, I've activated my EZ firewall, which I haven't used in the past because it would cause some problems with some apps. But I'd rather just be able to turn the internet access on and off as needed.

Does anyone know if there's such a thing as a manual on/off switch for an RJ45 cable? Seems to me like a rather simple concept.

Thanks to all who reply.

Hi y'all
I intend to switch my service provider from Cable (Time Warner) to DSL (probably Verizon) So far I never had DSL...went decades ago from dial up straight to cable. Now I need help from people who are more knowledgeable than me in that area.

My actual setup is as follows: Motorola cable modem ==> Cisco wireless router ==> Computer(s)
Basically I understand that I simply unhook the cable modem and replace it with a DSL modem
Is there anything else that would need to be changed/switched/altered?

Now please tell me if I got this right:
The highest speed obtainable largely depends on the distance and quality of the phone line between the node and my house (thus being beyond my control)
Which means even if I purchase a "better" package I won't get a faster access.

To avoid monthly rental fees I probably go out and buy a DSL Modem.

Is there anything to pay closer attention to, do they all work on the same lines or are there different models for those different "Speed-packages" ?

Any suggestions as of what brand/model would be favorable?

Can you think of anything else important I might have overlooked?

I don't want to act in a rush only to find out later on that I messed up and went about it the wrong way (Right now I'm really ticked off about those TW clowns who have a monopoly on cable here in the NW and I'm known to act irrationally when in a state like I am in now

First situation now:

I'm using a three display system where all displays are always connected but only max two can be used at the same time (see specs).

Displays 1 and 2 are monitors, display 3 is a FullHD TV. I'm normally using 1 and 2. Display 3 is in my bedroom upstairs, connected with 15 meters or 45 foot HDMI cable. When I turn the TV on and choose PC as signal source, Windows 7 switches the playback device automatically from PC speakers to HDMI Audio Out, and back to PC speakers when TV is turned off or another signal source is selected.

To choose which displays I want to use, I use Screen Resolution tool from desktop context menu.

The Question:

Would it be possible to make Windows switch displays automatically when I turn TV on? I mean do I have to always first change displays from Screen Resolution tool, or could it with some register manipulation be an automated process? And back when TV is turned off.

Sound device can do it. Could I "teach" my video settings to do it, too?

Thanks in advance,

Kari

There is a pin that feeds data from the TV to the card, so it is (in range of) possible.

Can I make Dell Audio (or something) automatically route the sounds to my headphones when I plug them in?  I didn't see any option within the Dell Audio menu to toggle that option.
I do quite a bit of work in my school's library, meaning I need to be quiet.
The problem is that when I plug in my headphones, I have to wait for Dell Audio to pop up and then I have to confirm my selection of "headphones with microphone" before any sound will go to them.  Only then will the sound go to my headphones.  While I do this, my computer starts dinging and beeping all the latest notifications for anyone nearby to hear, until I do the confirmation.
To make matters worse, if I plug in my headphones on the Windows lock screen and then sign in, the Dell Audio pop up never comes up; however, I still get the Windows notification center give me a notice, but it is non-interactive.  So then I have to unplug the headphones, wait for all the alerts saying that I unplugged something to go away, then plug them in the again.  If I don't wait for the alerts to clear, the Dell Audio selection windows won't load.  Again, the dings and beeps are going once I sign in and do all of this.
Of course, this is all provided I didn't mute the audio before I closed the lid the last time I used it.

A:Dell Audio - automatically switch to headphones when plugging them in.

SOLUTION: the pop up menu isn't clear.
If you toggle the option at the bottom saying to not pop up each time something is plugged in, it will just automate whatever it is you plug in (at least I can confirm that for 'headphones with microphone').
The way the radio button is phrased, simply sounds like it's just meant to turn off the pop up and nothing more.

I have three computers, Win95,98 and XP Pro all plugged into a switch which is connected to modem.

Since I have no router would it be safer to put another NIC
into the XP.
Connect one NIC to the modem the other to the switch, then connect 95 and 98 to the switch?

And finally enable ICS and the firewall on the XP.

That should work shouldn't it?

Personally, I'd buy a router, OfficeMax has a rebate deal that you end up paying about $10 for one. ICS is a major PITA, I can't imagine why you'd want to screw around with it for $10.

If I place a switch (5port netgear business class) at about the 250 feet mark and another at the 500ft mark would that essentially repeat the signal so we have a faster connection?

So it would go Modem-->Router-->Switch-->Switch--->Endpoint

I just switched from at&t dsl to cable internet. I have two computers. they are networked (thanks to the help i received here) one is a desktop getting internet signal through a ahhh forgot what it's called...wire--uh.. ethernet thing. the laptop is getting internet wirelessly. at first the laptop received the signal from the new router, then it quit. the desktop never received a signal through the wire. With the help of the tech support person at the cable company he determined that the signal was getting through to the modem/router, but not the computers. he suggested i clean up all malware i could and try again. I cleaned both computers using SuperAntispyware. Now i am able to get the signal wirelessly on the laptop and still able to access data on desktop through the network. BUT from the laptop i cannot get the signal from the modem/router with the cable internet. I temporarily hooked it back up to the dsl router to get internet. I am also unable to access data on the laptop from the desktop computer at this time.
Does anyone have any suggestions for getting the desktop more cleaned up so perhaps it will pick up the signals properly?

I thought that I had this all figured out, but my dad just asked me a question about my setup, and I can't answer it.

The setup is like this:
[ip-phones + computers]-->[small switch]-->[managed L2 switch]-->[router]-->[modem]

I have several ip-phones and computers grouped into blocks of 8. Each set of 8 is a medley of phones/computers connected to a small switch http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Sate...nksys/Common/VisitorWrapper&lid=3681322279B34

Each of these switches, in turn, will be connected to a managed L2 switch http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/pwcnt_3448p?c=ca&cs=calca1&l=en&s=biz that will create 2 VLANS: One VLAN will contain all of the phones, and the other will contain all of the computers. In turn, each VLAN will have its own router and DSL modem, thereby separating the network traffic.

I know that I can use this L2 switch to make the VLANS based on the MAC addresses of the devices. However, the smaller switches do not support 802.1q [VLANs]. Will it be a problem that the smaller switches do not support VLANs? Essentially, will this setup work to split up network traffic?

Thanks once again,
-Roger

A:Computer, switch, switch, router, modem

I have the same DELL switch for my phones. You PoE will not carry across the linksys switches, so that is the first problem.
Next are the computers attached to the phones? Or does each device get its own drop?

And whats this about 2 routers and modems? Thats a bit over kill!! QoS would do the trick.

I would run all the devices off the Dell and attach the computers to the Phones (most IP Phones have a passthrough port) Configure the Dell with trunk ports with the Computer VLAN passing untagged traffic making it the native VLAN. While having the phones on a Tagged VLAN(If you phones conig allows you to set the VLAN in its config great! If not you can bind the MAC to the VLAN). The you create a QoS policy giving the VoIP traffic priority!

Hello Kushal! Please don't give your e-mail id in the posts. Its not advisable. So please edit your post and remove it.

Secondly,I don't think this question is in the right forum. So I'll be requesting a mod to move it to a correct one so that you can receive help.
As far as I've seen Advanced System Care (ASC) is downright harmful. Bought down a hell for me. So, I'll personally advice you against its usage. Try to remember, has the problem started after you started using ASC? Have you tried to do registry cleaning with ASC?
If yes, then maybe you can try a system restore to a time when a problem was not there.

Dear all,

I found this forum by intensive googling for an answer to this question. As I found nothing, I hope I can get smarter by simply asking you all, thank you for reading!

I have a laptop (Dell XPS M1330) running Vista Home Premium 32bit featuring an HDMI port and, as far as I can see, a soundcard called SigmaTel High Definition Audio. I regularly watch videos on my LCD TV using HDMI and I am constantly annoyed by the fact that the audio output doesn't automatically switch over to HDMI when the cable is connected (or vice versa when the cable is disconnected). One would expect it to do so as this is how it generally works when f.ex. headphones are connected and indeed, on my laptop, the audio switches from speakers to headphones automatically without any problems.

My solution to the problem is to manually change the default output device to HDMI and then restarting the media player. I cannot see why this operation cannot be automatic, and therefore I ask of you all if there is any way to accomplish an automatic switch from speakers to HDMI when an HDMI cable is connected.

Thanks
Jonatan

A:Switch audio output device automatically between HDMI and speakers

Yes. I have a 64 bit system that also has an HDMI plug that I have hooked to my Sony TV. It works perfectly and switches off automatically when my TV is not in HD mode ( this is the output title only ). However, I have tried to hook the speakers that came with this Acer 64 bit Vista and it tells me " No Audio Output Device is Installed ". I have reverted back to the monitor that has a built in set of speakers with a separate plug for them, and they still don't work either. I would have to think there is an answer somewhere. We cannot be the only two people wanting our PC's to pull double duty.

A little help ?

Hello TechSupport people,

I am relatively good at installing and troubleshooting smaller sized networks... I am having trouble with one of my customer's networks and I think I have the problem narrowed down. Please help me if you see any corrections or issues.

I have a customer with a FS726T switch and ~20 computers connected to this switch running DHCP assigned addresses. The switch is assigning addresses in the 10.0.0.xx range.

The customer currently has an old T1 line coming into a Cisco router, which then directs traffic to port 20 on the switch.

The problem is, we are replacing the old T1 line with a newer 50mbps cable connection. The cable company pre-configured their router with a static IP address the 68.116.xx.xx range. The Subnet is also different than the Netgear's subnet. I would like to keep the old T1 connection in place. I believe they have data that needs to go to their mainframe/backbone server at corporate.

I cannot log in to the cable modem. IT is an SMC SMCD3G with a staic IP. I tried changing my PC's IP address to the same gateway but cannot get into the cable company's modem, even using a static IP with the same gateway as the modem's gateway address. I don't want to reset the modem/router and lose the cable company's settings.

I am pretty sure for the devices to communicate, the following has to be true?:

I need some assistance with our network at the office. We recently switched from having our data and voice being managed through a T1 and a phone server on site to having a cable modem and a virtual PBX.

Previous set up was T1 Line -> Box from T1 provided -> one line to the phone server and a second line to a SonicWall Firewall which then went to a couple of dell switches.

We have switched to a cable modem with 5 static IP's and a virtual PBX. Tech support for the PBX company suggested we configure our net work as follows.

--->Router---> Switch that connects to all phones
Cable Mode --> Unmanaged switch--|
--->SonicWall--> Switch that connects to computers

I configured the router for the phones and that works with no problems. But, when I configure the SonicWall with the information provided by our cable modem provider it worked but the SonicWall said it needed to restart after configuration so I clicked restart. Then the the internet connection wouldn't work and I couldn't get back into the SonicWall.

After numerous attempts at powering down the SonicWall and switch I finally was able to access it again and then the connection disappeared and finally I got access back again and reset everything to how it was on the T1 line.

The WAN setting on the SonicWall are as follows:

Hello

I am having a strange problem connecting Wireless ADSL2+ modem to an 8-port D-Link DES1008D switch. If I connect the Wireless ADSL2+ modem to my 8-port switch with a short 1-meter long CAT5 cable, then it works well without any problem. No losses shown on ping (no losses even with 65500 packets, using ping –l 65500 command). But if I use a long CAT5 cable of around 12 meters, then it does not connect at all. Light on the 8-port switch is not stable and it keeps on blinking and ping just totally fails. I tried changing cable too using CAT6 (assuming that first CAT5 cable may be defective) and then I even used another 8-port switch (one of same D-Link model and one other of Intex make) but no difference, same error. I also tried 4 different ADSL2+ modems (2 wired and 2 wireless) but same error on all of them.

Now strangely, if I connect the same Wireless ADSL2+ modem directly to my computer without any switch in-between using same cable, then it works. I even joined both the cables to make it a total of around 25-meter length, then also it worked without any losses. Means without switch, no length issues while connecting Wireless ADSL2+ modems to PC.

I tried using straight and crossover cables but same results. Switch is unmanaged so it is supposed to handle both types of cables but still I tried just to be sure.

Now one more thing, I replaced 8-port D-Link DES1008D switch with a 16-port D-Link DGS1016D switch, then it worked. So it means, that 8-port switches cannot... Read more

I just installed 4GB ram on my 32 vista and it only recognized 3GB in the os (vista 32) and all 4GB in the bios. so I decided to use the /3GB Switch, by using that command in bcdedit, it all worked good. The problem is now I have 3069 mb physical memory and ONLY 209 mb Kernal Memory!!! so I used the "bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa" and bcedit said it worked successfuly so i restart my pc and it STILL had the same memory! so right now im stuck with only 209 mb Kernal memory! any ideas on how to fix this? I looked all over google and found nothing. Should I keep these settings or try and fix it?how do i fix it?

A:3GB switch will not switch back, vista 32!

I am not too familiar with those commands you speak of, but I do have a question: Is the video card built into the motherboard? If so, what amount of system memory is being shared with it? Besides that, I have no more ideas to offer you. Sorry

We are moving to a new office location. The guys who will be setting our network is proposing the following equipment:

1. 3Com 24-port 10/100 mbps switch
2. 24-port Patch panel
3. 6u data cabinet
4. 1u cable management

The new office will be a 2-floor building with around 40 computers. I asked some of my friends who are more expert on network setup and told me typical switch (Linksys, Cisco) will do if we need to save some money.

What do you think? Thanks a lot!

A:Is 3Com 24-switch necessary or typical switch will do?

Well, first off, I'd be specifying a gigabit switch for expandability, I can't see investing in a 10/100 switch in 2010! If you don't need a managed switch, or need to save money initially, and unmanaged switch will probably be significantly cheaper.

In point of fact, if you want to go really cheap, you can get away for less than $100!

I understand that a hub is more like a party line, where all devices hear and read data before sending it to next port, and a switch is advanced hub. But, what is a router. I know what a wireless router is, but they say a router is more advanced than a switch. Can you buy a non-wireless router?

Also, can you connect 2 switches together? So, Modem-----to Switch----to Switch----Computer

And both switches have other devices connected?

A:Hub vs Switch vs Router/ 2 Switch Story

you CAN buy a non-wireless router--but--the two I found on Amazon were only 10/100 (most modern systems use gigabit ethernet 10/100/1000) but wired are generally cheaper than a wireless router(the Cisco below is NOT cheap)--however--it's not necessary to use the wireless part of the wireless router as most have at least 4 ports (wired).

Yes you can connect switches together but they won't allow for multiple computers to connect to the Internet (at least not easily nor in a way that makes sense).

What devices are you trying to connect together?

wired routers:
Amazon.com: TRENDnet 4-Port Broadband Router TW100-S4W1CA (Black): Electronics

Amazon.com: Cisco-Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch: Electronics

Hello,

I've searched the forum and could not find an answer to this problem.

I have a Windows 7 Enterprise machine where at the login screen the "Switch User" button is missing and so I am unable to clear the last user.

Just about all the results I got back on this topic was how to re-enable the "Switch User". This doesn't help because I can't login to make the change.

TIA!

Hey all,

I had to reinstall Windows Vista to my laptop, and when I restarted it to see how it was working the wireless button wouldn't turn on. My laptop is the type that has the button above the keyboard that normally turns blue when it's on and available to connect to a wireless network.

Does anyone know how to go in through the Run prompt to get to the administrator settings to reactivate the wireless button? I found it online at one point, but I can't remember how now.

I have 2 pcs, one is connected to a high speed cable modem and linksys router, and the other is wireless.

I need to switch them around, but am wondering if there is anything special I need to do.

Can I take the wireless card out of my pc and put it into the other one or should I just buy another wireless card?

Also, I have the old ethernet card from before, but can I just put that where the wireless card is now?

How do I go about doing this switch? Is there any type of configuring I need to do?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

It just toggles straigh back to the 'Off' position. Prior to the Windows Update, the wi-fi was running fine. any ideas/help would be great! Cheers DP

A:Cant find wireless network. possible wireless switch problem.

Some laptops need drives to activate the appropriate "FN" designated commands. Did you reinstall the PC recently?
Are you near a network you can connect to? Go to library, most of them have free Wi-Fi.
Also you can try to activate the card manualy. Go to Control Panel > Network Connections > and right click of your Card and "enable"
There is a low chance of this happening, but led might have burned out. Let us now how it went...

Apart from that the router needs to have all round good performance. Price isnt too much of an issue.

I'd really appreicate any help. Thank you.

Driver is probably a generic wireless driver that windows update has installed. Try and get hold of the driver from Fujistu site...

I found these:

My friend has a Toshiba Satellite laptop. I am not sure of the specific model. Also I think some of the hardware was put in after the laptop was initially purchased.

It has a built in wireless card, but it is not turned "on." When I try to connect with it, it says to turn on the wireless switch. How would I do that?

A:Turning wireless switch on

With my Dell the switch is the Fn + F2 key combination, with the F2 key denoted with a blue tower antenna icon. I think in another thread somebody said the switch on their Toshiba is on the front and is cleverly disguised to look like simply an indicator.

I have a 2 year old Sony Vaio laptop, running Windows XP Pro with built in wi-fi, which up until last night was working perfectly.
The problem is when I went to move the slider switch to 'On' this morning, the green light failed to come on, and i can't connect to the network. The slider feels a little loose too.
Also, when I went to shut down last night (Well, i put it into 'hibernation' mode...which means it boots up quicker), it just 'hung' saying what it was going to do....i accidentally closed the lid, then opened it back up.....i tried to reboot, but it wasn't having it, so i took out the battery hoping that would help....which it did, then i booted back up......i think this may be the reason i can't connect.......i've switched off and put back on all my router plugs etc, but to no avail.i can still connect to my desktop ok.
So, any ideas? What went wrong and can it be fixed? is it a loose wire inside?
Any help appreciated guys!
Thanks!!!

The laptop came to me, with Windows 7, installed in it.

so it messed my keyboard function. but then i let it dry for like 9 hours. then i on it back. my keyboard function well. but unfortunely my wireless switch does not turn on eventhough i press it. but my bluetooth function well.

how to solve it ? my os is window 7 home premium n my laptop is acer 4736Z.

help me ! ;(

A:MY WIRELESS SWITCH DOEST NOT ON

The spill may have damaged some circuit under the keyboard which is related to the wireless chip. If you've never worked on laptop repairs before, let a repair centre take a look at it. They may be able to repair it.

You can also probably send it to Acer for repair if you contact them first, but without a warranty they will charge a lot of money.

Not sure the title makes sense... but here goes:

Right now, I have Comcast HSI going to a dlink wireless router and all is good.

I have a new PC on a different floor of the house that I want to connect to the network. I don't want to snake cat5 throughout the house and it has no wireless card.

What I want to do is place a second wireless router (netgear wgv615v) in the room with the new PC and connect it (to the PC) with a cat5 cable. Then the netgear should connect to the wireless n/w and the PC gets a DHCP address from the dlink

Is this possible?

I've tried setting the netgears public IP as something in the DHCP range but I don't think that will work as it will never sync up to the dlink.

Am I missing something?

A:wireless AP as wired switch

A few routers will work as a wireless bridge (AP client). If the Netgear wgv615v is one of these, simply configure it as described in the user manual.
