Yoga 2 Pro - How to repair broken laptop?

Q: Yoga 2 Pro - How to repair broken laptop?

My Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro is broken and our of warranty. (I bought it slightly more than a year ago).

The wifi card is either broken, or perhaps it is being de-activated by the bios. In either event I can't seem to fix it, even after trying a few of the fixes listed on this forum.

Is there some way to get the machine repaired? Are there repair centres I can bring it to somewhere?

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Since your laptop is out of warranty you can take it basically anywhere to have it serviced. Best Buy comes to mind as well as many of the locally owned computer repair shops. If you are interested in having your laptop serviced locally at a Lenovo authorized Service Center then check out my link below. Just enter in your city and select the miles you wish to drive. Then check the Warranty Service Provider box to get a listing of repair places. Without this box checked the results will only include sellers of Lenovo products. When you find a center, please call ahead as some listings aren't up-to-date.

The glass broke on my Yoga 900, I have had it for less than a month so not a great day so far. I have contacted some local repair places, but no one seems to be able to get the replacement part, and I haven't had much luck on the support page.  Any ideas how I go about getting the part, or at least the part number?  Or any suggestions for ways to get it repaired?  I am near Charlotte NC USA

A:Yoga 900 - Broken glass

Good day and welcome to the community.
Sorry you're having difficulty.

Regarding part numbers, it looks like the entire lid/LCD assembly is one part. Please see pages 52-53 (item #1) of the HMM: https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/yoga_900-13isk_hmm_201509.pdf

Regarding repair, you might wish to call Service (info below) to ask about depot service or authorized centers near you.

Hope this helps a bit.
Regards.

The hinge on my Yoga 2 13 is broken and the monitor and the computer have become completely detached.  Any recommendations on how to proceed? I'd like to at least access the hard drive but have had difficulty in using it as an external drive.  I've purchased the converter that some have recommended but the drive simply doesn't show up when I connect it to another laptop.

Hi guys, I purchased a Lenovo Yoga 900 last week from an online seller here in Germany. When it arrived, I did a full system check to make sure everything is working on this close to ? 1400 machine. It turns out everything except the internal microphone is working fine. Specifically, I cannot use the microphone whatsoever. I just hear a loud, static noise when I listen to the mic through the speakers. When I say something, I don't hear anything I say though, only the static.  So I tried updating all my drivers and playing around with the properties of my microphone like changing levels up to all the way down and disabling/enabling various sound effects. All this didn't resolve my issue. So I tried more invasive stuff like updating my BIOS and, as a last resort, reset Windows 10. To all avail, this also didn't resolve my issue. So I am out of answers now and suspecting that my built-in microphone has been poorly shielded or has some broken wire somewhere.  What do you guys think? I can't find anything about microphone issues on the Yoga 900 and wanted to make sure that it's in fact a hardware fault.

Windows Update really f****d up my wife's laptop. Her Yoga 2 11 was crippled in every sense of the word.  Updates killed her Windows installation, which I can deal with. That's a non-issue minus the data she lost. What really screwed her though is that her laptop now does not recognize that a battery is plugged in. Let me expand upon this a bit: Windows (and Linux) do not recognize a battery is plugged in; the laptop WILL run off battery power; the laptop will NOT charge the battery; when running with the AC adpater plugged in, unplugging it will trigger the low battery LED flash on the power button & continue to run on battery power. I've tried installing the Lenovo battery software. I've tried uninstalling the Windows power drivers. I've tried installting different Linux power management packages on Ubuntu and Mint from a live USB. I've tried a fresh Windows install on a fresh hard drive (works fine minus the battery). I've tried new batteries. Hell, I've taken apart one of the batteries to make sure the battery was ok (it was fine). I've tested the motherboard for electrical continuity, and it all checks out. The one and only thing I cannot do is flash a new BIOS because, here we go again, the battery is not recognized. I'm literally at a loss at this point. Her warranty has, of course, expired. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Hi all, I've been experiencing an issue with my Yoga 3 11". A windows update a few weeks ago completely knocked down the touch screen and the USB devices. This means my touch screen doesn't work any longer and no USB devices gets acknoledged, even though (even if they get power).  Using windows restoe to revert my system back fixes the issue, but every time windows updates, touch screen and USB break again.  I have Windows 10 and I have also tried to install the windws 10 drivers for the chipset but nothing is doing it, this laptop is just not working with the last windows update. I contacted support which suggested as a first and quick thing to try to simply wioe down my laptop... I won't do that, as it's silly.  Is anybody experiencing this issue and have a professional solution (different from the non-professional one offered by lenovo support)?

Having got my hands on a p40 yoga, after many months waiting, and moved deadlines, it was in my possession for no longer than 2-3 weeks before someone walked passed it, dragged the cable with their foot & pulled it to the floor. Dead screen. Disaster. So I'll get a new one - no FRU number in the model guide, Lenovo parts can't help, Lenovo tech support can't get the number either. No choice, take it apart myself & find the FRU number on the back of the panel. I have found it - 01AW136 However, no parts will be available until July????  If I order a new p40 I will have it in 7 days, so why can't the parts be had???? Woe betide any who supports the manufacturer by buying the latest machines & then suffers the misfortune of damaging it. This is pretty poor. Can I separate the screen from the glass/panel/touch etc & just replace the LCD from BOE - has anyone tried this? Help! Many thanks,Richard

I had a problem with my yoga 700 11". The laptop freezes every so often (3-6 hours). At first I thought it's the drivers that need to be updated, then Windows 10 updates, then BIOS update.I tried all of that but the problem still persisted. I did the recovery reset but still the same... I created Linux system on USB flash drive and booted the laptop with it. Even under Linux the laptop was freezing.I contacted lenovo support team and they said the laptop needs to be repaired and they send me the return free postage vocher. Last week, I purchased a refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad 11e Yoga Chromebook.  When I received it, it was sealed in the original packaging with a sticker indicating that it had been refurbished at a Lenovo facility.  When I turned it on, I got stuck at the Enterprise Enrollment screen.  It seems that it was registered to the domain of the original owner and would not let anyone login without credentials for that domain.  The trackpad was also non-responsive, but I figured once I logged in, I could toggle the trackpad settings and get it working. There was a link to contact Google for help with this, so I followed those instructions.  Google said that they could not help me, and that I'd need to contact the original owner to have them de-register the device.  Since I had no connection to the original owner, I contacted the seller who apologized and told me that, since the device had a full warranty, Lenovo should be able to fix the issue. So, I contacted Lenovo for help on Sunday.  The Tech Support Agent that I spoke to first tried to tell me to return the device and get something that ran Windows since Chrome OS and Android are inferior(!).  Anyway, once I assured him that I did indeed want a Chromebook and knew all about Chrome OS, he told me that I could send it in for repair, and that all they'd need to do was wipe the system and re-install the OS with a consumer image instead of the enterprise image that was on the m... I have a DVD with 4 zipped files, each 930 MB.

Two are fine, two are not. When trying to copy to HD I get the message 'source file cannot be read'.

Tried a bunch of file repair programs. No luck. One went up to 260 MB copied in 40 seconds, then took 3 days (!!!) to move from 260 MB to 262,5 MB. Then I clicked cancel.

Disc has no scratches and have tried it in the drive of the laptop on which I burned it as well as on my PC.

Any solid programs? Any way to get them copied to HD?

I am desperate to get these files, please help.

Having recently bought pretty much the most expensive XPS 13 you can buy I was pretty disappointed when I dropped in on the carpet (gently) and the hinge broke - stuff happens. It's my primary computer so I just want to get it fixed as quick as possible - money is not really an issue.
After paying $300 for the repair I now find out, after over a week, that it's going to take ANOTHER 7 - 14 working days to fix it.
That's totally unacceptable for me and, despite being a loyal DELL business customer for over 15 years that's the last one I will buy. How DELL think that  3 - 4 week turnaround on a PAID repair for a computer under warranty is acceptable I don't know.

I am a 5 year owner of an X220 that still runs strong. I wanted something bigger and lighter. I ordered 2015 model X1 (non-yoga)... it had a poor FHD display screen (fuzzy text, don't get FHD instead get the QHD) and had issues resuming from sleep. Lenovo sent me a replacement, had same issues, I sent both back. No issues with the return process, very easy and free because they were defective. Now, I ordered a 2016 X1 Yoga because I want to be awesome and show off my touch screen 360degree swivel to cute girls in my class. The QHD display is amazing, looks just like a macbook pro retina display. I close the lid or put the laptop to sleep mode, open the lid, it turns on with blank screen and beeps 4 beeps three times (Everytime I sleep it). I have to manually hold power button to restart laptop. Nice! Also, sometimes the display driver crashes and gives a prompt telling me that it crashed. Another thing is that sometimes when I put it in tablet mode and back to laptop mode, it thinks its still in tablet mode. Other than these issues I've noticed within one day of using it.. no idea what else is yet to come lol... the laptop is so so so awesome, for reals. That said, should I send it into Lenovo Depot for repair service or get a replacement? I've read bad reviews on the depot service on this forum. At the same time, I don't want Lenovo to send me another defective laptop as was my experience with my X1 (non-yoga).  What should I do?

i restarted and it said windows failed to start and tried a startup repair. after an hour of "searching for problems" i gave up and restarted. safe mode didn't work either, it showed a list of programs starting and got stuck on that too. chkdsk doesn't work because apparently my drive is write protected. apparently i never created a restore point so the "last good configuration" didn't work.

Im assuming you mean the motherboard? if thats black and something melted i would say the board is toast and its not going to be cheap to fix the computer.I would say take it somewhere and see what damage was done and if it can even be fixed.

I am in major crisis mode because my laptop is stuck in startup mode and can't repair itself. I've tried a few command tricks but most of them require safe mode, which I can't access at all. Also, many threads have mentioned reinstalling windows 7, which would be fine if my disk drive hadn't burnt out recently. I am terrified of losing all my files so I don't want to toy around with anything. Thoughts?

A:Startup Repair on laptop cannot repair computer automatically.

Welcome DelaneyNicole.

Sounds like a shame that you do not have a backup of your files.

Some things you could try:
> Try accessing windows repair from boot (press F8 and select the recovery option),
> Borrow a disc drive from another system (maybe a friends?),
> Use a bootable USB drive with say some version of Linux on it to access your files.

Do you know what happens to cause this problem?

Please give us more info about your hardware (Laptop) as brand, model, amount of memory etc.
Is your windows disk from the laptop manufacture?
Do you have a backup of all your data files?
If you're trying to do a clean install, don't you have a BIOS factory recovery option (beware, it formats your HDD)?

You have two or more girlfriends and they shared a laptop and the only thing broken is the screen? Amazing!

If it was setup to allow Window's Remote Desktop or some similar third party remote access, you can use that. Otherwise, I think repairs or another laptop are called for.

Yesterday I decided I was going to get it going again. I bought a new 750w psu because I suspected that that was what was wrong with it. I replaced that and it still didn't work. I replaced the cr2032 bios battery and still no boot. I hit the clr cmos button and and booted and I got some life.

After setting some of the settings in the bios correctly and booting a few more times it was working fine. I upgraded to Windows 10 over night shut it down in the morning and went to work.

Upon returning from work it won't boot (it has been off the whole day. I have replaced the bios battery again and gone through yesterday's fixes, with no luck. What am I missing?

Dear Lenovo support, My Yoga laptop is not starting up after 12,5 months of using it.Fan is rotating and leds are lighting up for 1-2 secs and nothing happens. I've tried every suggestion and standard procedure like deattaching battery, holding power button etc. and nothing works.I've read it's quite a often problem and it's most likely failed motherboard. Can you confirm what's the most common root cause of this problem with you Laptops ? My warrenty is expired (few days ago) and I'm really dissatisfied how my first experience with you products is ending.Seeing how common this problem is I'd like to know if you would classify it as manufacturing defect. Looking forward to your answer. //Mariusz

I purchased this 2 months ago after doing quite a bit of online research. I just retired and it seemed to fit my needs.I have not used it that much yet as it seemed I always ran into an issue..and thought maybe it was just me not being used to it yet. Started using more this past week and have had 3 significat issues: - Circles appearing all over screen, curser jumping around...had to shut down manually with side on/off button. Called Lenovo and they said whatever the installed drivers were not set up to operate with Windows 10 so they fixed that for me. What ? So, you have to wait til you have an issue ( this had been happening on and off since my pruchase) to find out your laptop is not properly equipped? -Today, everytime I entered my pin, the laptop shut down. Called Lenovo and rep said she never heard of it...although I searched and found the issue listed here. She walked me throgh a reboot and OK now...but again..what ? - This one maybe be a Microsoft issue..but neither Lenovo or Micrsoft was able to help.  All of my data from an excel spreadsheet was erased ..even though I had been saving input every day for 2 weeks,  I read that there are no longer "previous versions" available on Excel...so is using an external back up every day the only way to avoid this ? Sorry, I know I have probably more than one topic...I'm very disappointed in the product and had high hopes for it. Since the yoga 900 has Bluetooth, is there any way I can use a Bluetooth stylus? I am judt about fed up. This laptop was amazing for the first eight months or so, but now the rotation is off the rails. It will switch to tablet and tent mode without being moved. Then it refuses to switch back to laptop mode. I am a writer. I need my keyboard. This is honestly unacceptable. I've tried everything - updating drivers, bios, etc. I wrote to Best Buy (where I purchased it) but they refused to help. Plus, my warranty is up. Any idea?

Hi there, I have the Best Buy version of the THinkpad Yoga 14. for about 2 weeks now. When I first bought it, I tested it out and the pen works. Now I am in class and I tried using it and the pen is not registering. The touchscreen works (e.g. I can draw in OneNote with my finger). I tried hovering the pen over the screen and it is not registered at all.

I know the pen automatically charges when it is in the holder. So I think it should be fine on battery.

So I don't know what else to do to get the pen to work??

Last year i bought a cheap laptop for university with good enougth specs for my own personal use (Medion MD40200 (RAM 2000)).
After i decided that it was just too big to carry around (15.4"), i pretty much let my sister have it. after a while, i noticed it started to get really hot. this is where all my troubles began.
A little later, the laptop began to start shutting down whenever any cpu intensive applications were running, then it even started happening whilst watchint movies.
After a bit of research, i noticed... that emachines have the EXACT same laptop, just a different lid...
turns out they buy their laptops from a company called ARIMA and the overheating problem in these laptops began since the use of the arthlon xp-m 2500+ (i have a 2600+). (too cheap to add new cooling )
I then decided to open it and clean it out seing as the warranty period had passed anyway. to my surprise there wasnt much dust inside at all, so i changed the paste (arctic silver 5) and tried all sorts of things, but nothing seemed to make any difference. so i gave up on it and just decided to leave it. however today, my sister came back with the laptop and told me that it wont even switch on anymore... horrific...
tried palying around with everything, but no change.. im guessing it was the motherboard that went bad, and i just want it back up and running smoothly for a month or 2 , any ideas what could be causing the problem, or how it can be fixed?

Hi I'm new to the forum
I was wondering what the prospects are of buying a laptop on ebay and fixing it. There are tons of listings where people are selling laptops that don't boot and they don't know why. Are there some comman reasons why this happens? Would it be likely to be less expensive just to buy a used one than repair one? -Given the LCD works?
I guess since I'm possing this question its clear I'm not a computer expert, but I think I could replace a broken component in a notebook. I built the computer I'm using a couple months ago for gaming. I want a bargain laptop I can use for shcool.

I usually put the charger in while im working, so that i dont have to worry about the battery dying on me. I plugged in the charger and stuck it into the outlet and...nothing. None of the lights light up and it wont power up. However, if you have the plug in in a certain way, it starts lighting up. like i have to twist it to be upside down in the slot and i have it held down with a rubber band. Also once i DO get it to charge, id let is charge all night and the next day i take off the charger and press the power button...and nothing. I think somethings wrong with the charger but thats just my opinion. Ne ideas?

HP Laptop Pavilion 17-F111, about 1 1/2 years old. Windows 8.1, all Windows updates current.

I was working using the wireless network, when the network connection suddenly failed. After various attempts at troubleshooting I determined the Wi-Fi was not working, period. The ethernet adapter works fine and allows working on the network or even the internet, by-passing the wireless router. Other wireless networked devices have no problems.

I checked the most obvious Wi-fi issue on HP laptops: a physical switch that toggles Wi-Fi on/off; this model does not have that switch. If it has a software switch, that software switch is undocumented (I know because I checked HP's manuals). Yes I do RTFM.

Device Manager says the driver on the built-in adapter is correct and that "This Device Is Working Properly"

I have tried 3 different USB Wi-Fi adapters, and all fail on this computer only. All 3 work on other computers as plug-and-pray (Windows has the drivers) in the same location, same network. In each case, Device Manager says the drivers are correct and that "This Device Is Working Properly". In each case the USB adapter can't find any of the networks.

When attempting to connect via Ethernet, the adapter finds the connections and connects with no problems. By the way, I don't intend to make do with ethernet. This laptop travels and can't expect to always find ethernet. Besides, when I'm here, I don't want to work in the Server Clo... Read more

Im going to try and be as thorough as possible. Please bear with me...

So, I have had my toshiba laptop about 4 years now and in the past year have encountered a problem, this problem is that when I turn my laptop on when it reaches the logon screen it just starts booting up again. This is an endless loop that I only got out of by using my Product recovery disk (which I got with the laptop) and completely wiping the laptop and reinstally with the disk.

But this time what has happened is that when I try to log on it just kept loading...it just kept loading after I entered my password. I ahd to manually shut this down by holding the power button after waiting 15 minutes. I tried logging on then being forced to shut it down several times after this.

I realised that I had no other choice than to try a system recovery. I proceeded to put in the disk, chooses CD?DVD from the boot menu, follow the oncreen instructions to recover the laptop and it did so. Well until 54%...It just froze. I left it for 30 minutes! But no, so I had to close it down. I then turned it back on and it wouldnt even get into the loading windows bit as now a lot of my software was missing/corrupted/messed about due to the semi-reinstallation. SO I am stuck now people, unable to log on, unable to reinstall properly.

I am kind of sure it is no virus problem as I due regular virus scans. I have not acsessed anything virusy in a while and tend not to on my laptop but please help me

A:Broken Laptop :/

Your Hard Drive may be failing. Boot off of the Restore CD and try and Format (erase) the disk first. If that is not an option, then download KillDisk and make a boot CD and boot off of that CD and run kill disk. then boot off of your Restore CD and reinstall. If that fails then replace the HDD.

A:Broken laptop, but I need everything on it!

Yeah it should be possible assuming the hard disk wasn't damaged when the laptop was dropped.

Your best bet is to buy an external enclosure for a 2.5" disk (which is what is fitted to a laptop) and then connect it to another computer using that enclosure. Its then just a simple case of transferring files over to the other computer.

My LCD screen on my laptop is broken. When I power it up, all I see is the white of the backlight. It broke when it was dropped. At first, the screen would flicker on and off, and sometimes half the screen worked and the other half was simply white. This makes me believe there's a loose connection somewhere. I've taken it apart to try to fix it, but I've not been able to. Is there anything I'm overlooking or should check? I really don't want to send it to a repair shop, my warranty is expired.

Hi everyone. So I've noticed this subject being touched on for other models but mine doesn't seem to be listed anywhere plus a lot of the posts are a bit older now...I'm looking for an up date on this issue maybe. I'm looking for a stylus or pen that will go with my touch screen device. My goal ideally would be to use illustrator or photoshop to make simple sketches and even illustrations or paintings. So far a few styli I have tried don't work. The dollar store rubber tip one will draw a wobbly line which is useless while a more expensive Adonit Jot Pro with a clear disk on the tip...hardly manages a continuous line at all.  It also doesn't help that the Lenovo site doesn't list ANY accessories for my device along the lines of pens/styli and half the time the site tells me I have a Thinkpad and half the time it's an Ideapad. And sometimes my model isn't even listed at all anywhere on the accessories drop down! This is my first time switching to a non-mac/apple product and so far I have to say I'm really not too impressed but still hopeful things will work out. My Yoga 700 came out of the box with driver issues as well as a desperate need for a firmware update that would fix ghost touch screen tap issues that kept closing windows... But I guess those can just be called growing pains. I would really like to make full use of my touch screen so I'm looking for a pen or stylus with pressure sensitivity and palm rejection that integrates with illustra... Read more

Hi! I bought this one 2  days ago and I'm amazed how bad the keyboard is. Just check the video:https://youtu.be/n4oN6H3x2nQThe keyboard actually doesn't match the photos: enter key is weird form and there are two \ keys. Space key sticks depending on which part of it you click. It also makes a weird noise. Definitely not the quality you expect from a premium model. I would actually be happy to return it, but I'm in another country for a while so looks like I'm in trouble. This is the second Yoga I have, but seems that I will never buy a Lenovo again.

Yeah, you see a lot of complaings about those keyboards, they are trying to make them too thin in you ask me. I would return it if you do not like it, even if you have to pay shipping.   The Thinkpad line have much better keyboards, and in my opionion are far more durable too.  Good Luck,

Problem: It seems as though my brand new Thinkpad Yoga 12 doesn't know that it's in laptop mode and turns the keyboard and trackpad off as soon as the log in screen (Windows 8.1) comes up.   But if I lightly press the screen back, both come back to life. I let go and they switch off immediately. I also found out that if I put something under either one of the front corners of the laptop, the keyboard and trackpad work and stay on for longer ... with 90% success rate.   What's weird is that when I go directly to the BIOS, then the keyboard works perfectly, which gives me the impression that it's a sensor problem.   Touchscreen works always and perfectly.      Previously troubleshooting attempts without success: Re-install all drivers. (Keyboard, sensor, etc.)Update all drivers.2x 8.1 Windows reinstall. All (non-Microsoft) services off.Sensors and HID keyboard off / uninstall.Safe Mode      System Details: Windows 8.1, BIOS Version 1.03, i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Wacom Digitizer etc.

I have a toshiba satellite a215-s4757 with vista and recently the monitor stopped working. At first it would blink and glitch, but now it is only capable of staying on for ~5 seconds.

I got an external monitor after I had tried it out and it works (I am using the computer right now). However, when I start up my computer, it will attempt to use to laptop monitor 2-3 times though the start up process. During those times, I have to hit FN+F5 quickly to switch to the external or else it will remain on the laptop monitor for ~5 seconds and then die. I don't know what happens when it dies. It does not seem to shut off completely because the power is on, but I cannot switch the monitors and when this happened the first time, my music stopped playing (suggesting not just the monitor went off?).

So my question is should I disable my laptop monitor through the control panel display stuff?

I'm assuming a couple of scenarios from this:
1. It works fine and the external monitor is the only thing being 'used' by my computer.
or
2. It disables the laptop monitor but still tries to use it during start up, at which point I can't see when to press FN+F5 and I can't get it to work.

But if I don't disable it:
3. It works okay for now but eventually the screen fully breaks and it still tries to use the laptop monitor during start up, basically the same situation as #2.
or
4. It continues to work okay but not great and I have to FN+F5 any time I start it up.

No. As long as there are no exposed wires anywhere, there will be no health hazards.

Note this could be a simple fix as it could simply be a loose wire to the netbook's monitor. Of course opening the case is often best left to a pro, but if you need portability, it might be worth having it checked out.

hi, all

so, my laptop is pretty old. it was my moms laptop for a while, then my sisters, and now mine. the only reason i ever got it is that a few years ago, my sister dropped it, and the screen stopped working. i have it hooked to an external monitor, so this is not much of a problem. however, when i got it, it still had the sceen attached, it just didnt work. back then, i had only a limited knowlege of how computers worked (although, of course, i thought i knew everything), so i opened up the case, figured out how the (broken) screen connectd to the bottom half, and proceeded to remove the entire upper half of the laptop (dont blame me, i was 12). unfortunately, there were parts in the upper case that had absolutely no connection to the screen (notably the speakers), which were also removed. when i turned the computer on after this surgery, the sound wouldnt play, even through headphones. at the time, i thought that was a good trade for not having a ugly, broken screen (remember, i was 12). now that i know better, its too late to put the screen back on. i have no idea specifically what components i removed, besides the screen, but i need to know if they can be bypassed with a program or something, or maybe a part cannabilized from another laptop (the surplus store has stacks of destroyed ones).

thanks.

A:PLEASE HELP! laptop sound broken!

Without knowing exactly what components you removed and the model of the laptop, it's really difficult to diagnose what the problem is. However, laptops are really not meant to be opened outside of a clean room (The internals are damaged extremely easily) so you could have damaged the sound card.

Hi

I've got a bit of a problem. My laptop was acting really weird, very slow. So I wanted to take a look inside. I tried unscrewing the bottom cover off but two screws were just not budging. Stupidly, I tried to pull the bottom cover off anyway.

I got it off, reseated the RAM, removed and then put the hard drive back and removed and put the CMOS battery back in. Replaced the bottom cover, tried to turn it on and..... nothing. No display (even with external monitor), sounds being made but no beeps or anything.

My question is, have I broken it? Did my forcing the bottom cover off damage the motherboard or something?

I can't believe how STUPID I was and i'm kicking myself, but just wondering if anyone out there with more sense than me (won't be hard ) can suggest anything that I can try? Or am I stuck with a machine that's wrecked?

Thanks in advance

We had finally gotten a computer (laptop) last week (which husband had to fix first ) to be able to do some work for someone. Just got it up & running 2days ago and while at a friend's, someone stood it up next to a chair, and it fell over & actually broke the screen (looks kinda like you swiped the screen with a few different colored paintbrushes)! Due to a wildfire in August, we are very short on money so we will probably have to try to find a screen on craigslist or something. My question is Is there ANY other models that are apt to have the same screen or that can be easily used? If so, which ones are apt to be compatible or, if you don't know, how can I find out???
HP 2000-239dx
Thank you very much for any/all help!

P. S. Hopefully this was the best subforum to put this in. If not, either let me know or feel free to move it for me. Thanks

A:Broken Laptop Screen

A Google search for 2000-239dx LCD will turn up a number of pages of companies selling the screens and also people selling them on e-Bay. You could choose to buy from one of those sources. Some of the found pages may list other HP models that use the same screen.

Hi,

I have a laptop which was not starting.

It was not allowing me to move the cursor to start into safe mode.

So I connected an external keyboard which allowed me to attempt to enter safe mode or last good config.

But it still wouldnt start.

I went into setup and noticed that a menu was flashing on and off, and deduced that the keyboard was reacting as if a key was held down.

So I hit it.

And it now starts fine.

But obviously the keyboard could stop working at any time.

The laptop is the kind that has the mouse as a little nub below the G,H keys So I assume that if the keyboard was disconnected the mouse would stop working too.

As a fix I am wanting to open the laptop and disconnect the keyboard-mouse, and use and external mouse/keyboard.

But I am worried that this might be more difficult than it sounds as I have never done it before. I am worried that the connection might be disable the screen or something too.

Can anyone advise me on whether I should attempt this, or how I should go about it?

I have a little experience with electronics but noting extensive.

The laptop is a Toshiba Satelite. I can post the model and seriel numbers if needed.

Thanks.

The display screen is cracked and of very little visual use on my daughter's laptop. I had an old 15" monitor working for the display, but somehow she changed the settings and now all of the operable/functional portions of the image are on the side of the screen that does not work (can't be seen). She said something about clicking a dialog box that said "share the screen". I have it started in Safe Mode and the monitor operates just fine (I can see about 10% of the laptop screen/ top left area) both screens appear to show the same thing. Does anyone know where to find the settings to get the screen to show up on the additional monitor in regular mode?

Well its not broke as such, it still fully functions. I was installing ram in my laptop and to install one of the modules I had to remove the keyboard by pushing in 5 little tabs which hold the keyboard down. Trouble is I've pushed three of these tabs too far in and they wont pop out again thus making my keyboard loose at the bottom end, and the down arrow key is now loose sad.gif.

Anyone know of an idea how to fix this? is it safe to use some kind of adhesive to hold it in place and are these keyboard easy to replace due to the broken key?

Thanks,

Rach

A:Broken Laptop Keyboard

It's easy to replace the laptop keyboard, providing you order the exact replacement. From the sounds of the issue, I'd say that's the proper fix for this one.

I was given a friends HP Pavillion laptop to diagnsoe the problem -

Symptoms - upon powering up the screen is black. The harddrive light flashes on once and you can hear some movement before it turns off again. Fans and lights all turn on but no bios or even backlight to the screen.

Today I opened it up and saw this: http://imgur.com/a/m1grr

1)would a broken whatever that is on the mobo be the sole cause of those problems or should I look for more?
2)how should I go about repairing that? glue? solder? suggest sending in to the shop?

A:Diagnosing broken laptop

If thats on the motherboard of the laptop then almost certainly that is the cause of the laptop not even showing the bios screen, unfortunatly there are normally only 2 ways of repair; A: Send to a PCB specialist to repair the mobo B: replace the mobo. both of which are not financially viable unless the laptop is very new.

Is it still in warranty?

the pin inside my laptop DC port has snapped off

DC port

the diagram probably wont work lol. but basically, The power cable plugs into a round port, which has a central pin, which the power cable slides over. it is this central pin that has snapped. Can i get a new port easily and how hard are they to fit to laptops? what are my options as PC World want 120 before they even look at it. THEN parts and labour on top.

A:laptop DC port broken

It's not that difficult, though you need some soldering skills and the correct tools.

I had one that the board was pretty mangled, and I soldered a small extension onto the pads with a strain-relief where it came out the hole, and just used a Radio Shack jack to match the plug on the P/S. If you can find a supplier or a dead laptop, you might be able to obtain the part that way.

I am trying to fix a laptop for a friend. They broke their CD drive (internal in the laptop) and scince then have been using a external CD drive. However their windows broke, (hee hee, they got a virus).

So basically they need to install windows, but bios only checks the broken cd drive for a boot disk. I have taken appart the laptop and tryed to fix the CD drive but the mechanism is shot (totally bent out of shape) and the motor seems burnt out. The price for a new internal CD drive excedes the cost for a new laptop as the company who made the laptop has gone bust.

I need to know if there is any way to get a windows install Cd to boot (out of windows) off of the external drive.
Floppy disk drive works btw

A:Broken Laptop Cd Crive

Regretably we would at least need to know the make and model of laptop, for anyone to be able to comment on the possibility it can be made to recognise the USB drive at boot.
Not all/many can.

Also the Wndows version would be helpful.

Else its crystal ball territory...
