Dell 13 Insipiron 7348 touch pad problems win 10.
Hello all, I own the 7348 insipiron i7 version .using  Win 10. ( with extended Warranty)
Here is my touch pad issue.
The touch pad is very very very intermittent on BATTERY Power, and is quite unusable.
However when I connect the HP  wall charger to the 7348 the Touch Pad works perfectly!
I have read many others Insipiron 7000 owners have this issue and as I write about my problem with this  issue, I have read many other 7000 users are experiencing the same issue.
Hopefully Dell or a Techie will have a fix.
The 7000 series are very expensive and this issue needs to be FIXED.

I have a Dell Insipiron 1720 laptop with Vista Premium. it has been bluescreening alot lately. It was bluescreening when using the internet opening some programs etc.more recently it was bluescreening at startup. the bluescreen would do a dump. but I never looked at the error code(I know I should have) but I thought it might be just a virus. So I wiped the laptop and reinstalled Vista. Now the laptop blue screens at startup. just after the vista loading screen. The bluescreen happens so fast that I cannot see the error. The only way I can get the laptop into the desktop is to remove a part like the battery and putting it back in.I have tried removing memory, resetting the HD, removing baterry, wireless card. also when the laptop was wiped it was missing 2 drivers in the chipset driver and video driver, I installed these as I thought the video might be the issue. It also does not show any serious errors in the event log any ideas?

Hello all, I just started using SKYPE today and noticed the Skype audio was extremely LOW.
I adjusted the Recording Levels to MAXIMUM, and still the audio is very LOW!
SInce I was new to the 7348 I wanted to see where the Mics were located. The owners manual shows 2 mics on the very top of the screen! BUT there are NO small Holes in the plastic frame in front of the mics to allow for clear audio????
The frame should have small holes in the top plsastic frame to allow for AUDIO. So you are talking through the plastic frame. This is crazy! I never have seen a Laptop  with a covered MICS.
WHAT TO DO?
Thanks rob

Good Morning, thank you for coming to this post, i really appreciete it.
I'm sorry if my language is not good enough for you but now i have a problem with my recording audio problem. I don't know how long this problem came up but when first time i bought it, it works perfectly. But now this problem show up.
My internal speaker is good but my microphone is not, i don't know which one is the internal microphone . but no sound at all, i've checked from f12 ePSA and it works for speaker but for microphone is not, i've checked from "set up microphone" but it can't because no sound come from microphone and i can't make enchanment for room calibration because my microphone have a signal low or maybe no signal because no sound from it.
please help me to fix this, i don't know how to do next..
Thank you for your time.

A:Recording Audio Problem Dell Insipiron 14z (5423)

Hello. You have selected the correct one. Microphone Array is the internal mic. It is a pair of mics located in the webcam assembly at the top of the display screen.

The things you can try are
> Reinstall the IDT audio driver from the Inspiron 14z 5423 support page. When you get to that page, first select your operating system by clicking on the Change OS selector:

> Adjust the mic volume and boost. Here is a screen shot of the path, but on yours start from Microphone Array:

> If you have a program in your list of programs named Dell Webcam Central, open that program and find the microphone settings. Make sure the mic is not turned off.
If none of those things fix the mic, it could be damaged. To fix the mic array would require replacing the webcam.

Hi all,
I have one problem with my one year old dell inspiron E1505 laptop. Monitor is loose, loose in the sense it is not falling down but it is shaking. I was too nervous and concerned about it since its like only one year old.

please help me friends.

thanks in advance.
pavan.

A:my dell insipiron E1505 laptop monitor is little loose.

Pavan:

I’m at Dell Headquarters in Austin, Texas and I just came across this post. There are two places that the hinge can come loose. If the screws that fasten the LCD assembly to the chassis are loose, they can be tightened with a screwdriver. If the wobbling is coming from something loose inside the bezel, that would have to be disassembled and parts may need to be replaced. To get to the screws, you would need to remove the hinge cover and I included a link to the instructions for tat procedure below.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins6400/en/sm/hingecvr.htm#wp1123881

If the system is still under warranty, we could dispatch out the whole LCD kit, which would definitely fix it without having to pull the LCD apart. The only issue with that is those kits are expensive, so if it's not covered, you're better off finding out which (cheaper) part it is and getting only that one.

If you have any questions feel free to post back. I'll be checking this thread for the next few days.

My mom's Dell Optiplex Desktop computer will not boot windows.
When you turn it on you get the Dell splash screen, then the screen askign you how you want to boot since last time it had an improper shutdown, if i select Normal or Last Known Good Configuration it will go to the Windows XP loading screen for a minute or so before the whole thing shuts off.
I can get it to boot to safe mode so I don't think the issue is with the HD.
I messed around with the RAM chips since she had several of different sizes from different manufacturers and the 256mb one that was likely original to the PC was able to get through the windows loading screen but it immediately goes to Check Disk and gets to ~15% before shutting off. It will not respond to my wireless keyboard to abort check disk, and I do not have a wired one available.

I have not seen it today, but last time I was working on it I got "Thermal Event" errors even after opening it up and cleaning the bejezus out of if. The thing is spotless inside and is not overheating due to dirt.

Any suggestions are welcome. I am going to see if I can find my old XP disk but I'm not optimistic that it'll turn up.

Thanks in advance

I am trying to fix a computer for my girlfriend's mother so she can have a family computer in her living room so her family will stay off of hers, but that's beside the point. Anyway, what computer I am trying to fix is a Dell desktop, not completely sure the model of it at the moment (although if it is required I can find out). When trying to start the computer up, it says disk read error: 0 or something to that degree. I shut off all of the disk drives in the system setup and what do you know the computer started right up into Windows Vista. However, it randomly shuts off (it was doing this from the beginning before I could get it to boot into Vista). I have since deleted the partition and to install Vista from scratch like I was intending to do, however I cannot complete the installation before it turns off. Forgive me if I am posting in the wrong section, it's just there are a few things that are going wrong for this disaster I didn't know where to put it. Any suggestions? My thought is a hardware problem, but it could be something so simple to fix that I have been overlooking it.

We just want to be able to get to the desk top so we can get our work.  Does anyone know why this might be happening and how to fix it.  Mind you we are not tech savvy and anything that involving navigating thru the computer might be a little challenging for us, but any help would be appreciated.

My friend brought me a Dell Dimension C521 desktop to look at. She has 4 boys who've been all over the web and I believe it's caught a virus. She was using it a few days ago, but when I tried it, it tries to log on to Windows (I assume) but doesn't get past the wallpaper (no icons). The little hourglass turns on & off repeatedly (about 1 minute on, then 1 minute off, then another minute on, and so on...) but never fully logs on.
My plan to place her HD in my pc failed me 'cus it has different pin/cable structure (?).
Is there anything I can try to save it from reformatting the HD? I can't even get it far enough to chk the specs for you!
Pls help?

Hi,

Just got a new Dell Mini 10V.. Win XP Home. Has SP3, and has IE6. I cannot get the Microsoft website to display/respond so I can update XP. I get the "cannot display this webpage" error. Thought it may be a problem with the MS site, so checked on another, updated machine... no problems.

Any ides on why a brand new machine would have a problem accessing the Update site? I can call Dell, but figured if i'm missing something, or there is a simple potential fix, this would be a LOT quicker than Dell Support.
THANKS!!!

Over the last several days I have been attempting to update windows to 8.1. It starts, tells me that it is installing. At this point I have been unable to stay through the length of the install to see the point that the crash actually happens.

Sorry for the lack of info, but trying to deal with this as well as a personal matter.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can assist.

A:BSOD on DELL XPS when update to Windows 8.1

Generic advice (based on your problem description):

I've seen antivirus programs interfere - so remove any antivirus/internet security programs (temporarily) and use Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall while installing 8.1

Get ALL updates form the PC manufacturer
Then get ALL Windows Updates
Then do it all again 2 or 3 times - continue until you have all updates.
Then try again.

FWIW - it took me 3-4 months to finally be able to update to 8.1 on a new, Win8 system.

Specific advice (based on the reports that you submitted):

Your BIOS dates from 2008. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

Due to the age of the system, it is very likely that this system may not be compatible with 8.1 (and may even have problems with Win8). I have a Lenovo tablet (x61t) that has a 2008 BIOS and it won't work reliably w/Win8. If it is incompatible, you can either live with the "quirks", or you can downgrade to Win7/Vista in order to get a stable system.

Only 120 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 160 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

You have 4 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of you... Read more

will my Dell dimension E520 desktop PC upgrade to Windows 10 from windows 7 without major problems? Dell do not recommend it, but I have heard that some early (2007 build) PCs can upgrade without dramas. Has anybody upgraded this series of Dell PCs?

A:Dell dimension E520 desktop, can it be upgraded to windows 10?

After a Google search I've found someone to be running Windows 10 on the same machine as you. They've said it runs reliably. Generally if your PC can run Windows 7 it can run Windows 10.

You can upgrade to Windows 10 easily by using the upgrade installer here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

Hello, I'm having a problem that I haven't seen addressed anywhere. I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 and for some reason I can't move my desktop icons to the far right side of the screen, they snap back one column away from that side like they're prevented from going that far because the Windows 8 charms bar is there. This happens on the computer's screen, but not on an external monitor when I plug one in. It's very strange. It happens when the icons are "arranged to grid."
I'd really like to simply plug in my laptop to the external monitor and see the same desktop, but it's as if the computer still thinks I'm running Windows 8. Any advice or ideas?
Thanks for your help!

Six months ago, I installed Windows 10 from an update.  My computer had been using the 8.1 operating system.  For some reason, everything went haywire a couple of weeks ago, and I went to recovery and reset the computer to default factory settings.  It took quite a while for this to complete.

However, after I did this, I had several updates that had to be completed, and I did this.  Then the Windows 10 update logo appeared on the bottom of my screen, and I tried to update to Windows 10 from 8.1.

I am unable to do this now.  I get an error message that "We couldn't update the system reserved partitions."

When I contacted Windows Support, they said that sometimes after updating to Windows 10 and then refreshing, the next update wouldn't work well.

What can I do to get Windows 10 back on my computer.  I am so used to it, and I really like it.  I am old and cannot do really difficult tasks, but I can do some.

Thanks. for your help.

First - The Bad News:
Memory - boost the 531 up to its 4 Gig capacity.  The stock 2 Gigs won't cut the mustard for this.
Audio - the integrated sound chip on the motherboard will sound choppy if you use the Realtek drivers and/or may not work at all giving you the dreaded NO AUDIO DEVICE FOUND.  Since the 531s are used mainly for the usual email and online surfing activities anymore (a gaming machine they're not even when they were new) ... just get a new sound card for a few bucks online and disable the integrated sound chip on the motherboard in BIOS.
Upgrading to Windows 10 from XP, VISTA, SEVEN ... you need to do a clean installation or you will encounter issues like corrupt registries, applications like Adobe not working, and Microsoft Office errors after the update (where Office throws up the dialog it can't find Word, Excel, Outlook etc. even when you click on the application's executable file).  This means back up your personal files to an external hard drive.
Now - The Good News:
Despite the fact that the Windows 10 Upgrade notification icon tells you that the Inspiron 531's integrated NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 doesn't have drivers for Windows 10 and therefore won't let you upgrade to Windows 10 Home or Pro ... pay no attention to that.
You do not need to go buy a video card for this system for Windows 10.

I just received a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop for free and figured I can just get it back to nothing on it by formatting it and giving it to a friend. I have a windows XP Home OS install disc that I downloaded not too long ago, I used the very same install OS cd on a dell laptop and windows XP installed perfectly fine, and I went to Dell's website and downloaded all the drivers. Now with this Desktop, I put in the OS install CD, booted to the CD, of course the windows XP install screen came up. I deleted the old partition, created a new one, and began to install windows on it. The computer restarted and went into the installation screen. However, it freezes at 39minutes and then after about 15 min an error screen pops up. I just used the disc recently and can't figure out why it is stopping at that 39min screen?

So the next thing I tried was this: I also have an older OS upgrade cd of Windows XP home. I popped that in the drive and tried to install that way and it went perfectly fine. After windows xp loaded up, i went to download the drivers from Dell and that worked. But when I try to get the service packs from microsoft, it won't let me install them and an error comes up. Now why would those error messages come up? When i turned on automatic updates, the computer would not retrieve the updates from microsoft. I had to go to the site and do it manually, but I got an error message not allowing me to install the microsoft service packs (i tried service pack 1 a... Read more

A freind of mine seems to have a problem with her laptop. Shes running a Dell Insipiron1440 With Windows 7. Its about 3-4 years old.  She says:    "The computer takes me to a screen. That give me two suggestions: load windows files (recommend), start windows normally.
I have tried both and neither takes me to the desk top. There are no other options such as press f7."
So basically she cannot get to her desktop. Any idea what might be wrong?

The error code 52F was encountered when trying to perform Windows Update. I contacted MS Windows Update Support via email.

They replied with the following:

Step 1: Verify the relevant Windows Update services
=================================
1. Click the "Start" Button in the "Start Search" bar, type: "services.msc" (without quotes) and press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

3. Click on the "General" tab; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic" or "Manual". Then please click the "Start" button under "Service Status" to start the service.
4. Please repeat the above steps with the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS).

You can also temporarily stop these services, restart the computer, and then start these services again. If any service is missing or cannot be stopped or restarted, please let me know.

Hi All,
I need to rebuild my Dell Desktop (approx 3 years old ) which came with Windows 8.5. Since then like most people I've upgraded to Windows 10 via the Windows upgrade option.  If I need to rebuild this, am I correct in thinking that once rebuilt with Windows 8.5 I should then at some be prompted to upgrade to Windows 10 ?
Or is there another way of doing it ? Thanks

Our network Admin released a group of updates on 2-15-11. I have one pc that has seemingly been affected.

DELL OptiPlex 755

Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Service Pack 3
RAM 3326 MB

The user advised that when he opens Outlook, SQL Server, Visual Basic, etc. his pc just freezes. The screen freezes in the current program. The time on the task bar is visible, but frozen. My remote access window is still connected, but he cannot see me moving the mouse and I am unable to get anything to function.

We tried running Ad Aware, Malwarebytes, HiJack This and between them, there were just a few items found and removed. We removed all of the updates through Add/Remove Programs for the date in question. After rebooting, it still freezes. Most recently I tried a System Restore and it failed to complete. I am attaching the HiJack This log in case it could be helpful.

For some reason, suddenly the desktop has stopped appearing. This started a week ago after which I kept the computer turned off. The only thing I can do is start task manage (cntrl-alt-del). I navigated to the system32 restore folder and selected rstui.exe as a new task to start, but the computer didnt do anything except show the rstrui process in the tasks list. I was able topen regedit though, but I dont know what I can do to restore the computer to an earlier time or to factory settings.

Help please, what should I do to get the desktop back?

A:desktop does not show:dell optiplex gx280 with windows xp professional

This is a Virus. DO NOT DELETE TEMP FILES. I can give you some steps, but I don't know how savvy you are. Combo-fix is your first program to run, followed by TDSSkiller, then Malwarebytes.

DO NOT DELETE TEMP FILES.

Please disconnect all the connectors and then hold down the power button for 15 secs, now remove the memory modules and put them back one by one and observe for any changes.
If possible please try another set of memory modules. If there is a separate graphics card, remove that as well and try the onboard.

Hi,
A new major update for Windows 10 has been released a few days ago, and the update included a new gesture which allow user to switch the desktops with 4 fingers placed on the touchpad and swipe between left or right to switch the desktops.
This new gesture is not working on my touchpad and I am assuming this may relate to the current version of the touchpad driver is not yet supported to this feature because the other gestures like three fingers swipe for moving any opened windows and three fingers tap for calling Cortana are still working fine for me.
I was wondering if there will be any update for the touchpad driver coming soon, or all of these were just my own issue...

Thank you!

As you can see in my System Specs I have a DELL Inspiron Laptop and I go to DELL System Detect to find out what is good for my PC. There you can do tests as well.
But you normally don't need to update drivers all the time. Why did you do it in the first place? Did you have problems and you thought you could solve them by changing your drivers ?

I have a Dell XPS 18 portable all-in-one machine that came with Windows 8, then I updated it to Windows 8.1 without any problems. It caught a nasty virus and I had to restore it to factory settings, which leaves me back at Windows 8.

I have tried multiple times to install the Windows 8.1 update through the Microsoft Store but keep getting Error Code 0xC1900101-0x40017. I have tried the following but get the same result;

Ran all of Windows Updates that would come upVerified that all drivers were up to date. Note: my video driver is NOT a Nvidia but an Intel. I've seen posts stating that this driver needs to be updated in order to fix the problem.Ran Selective Start Up

I don't know what else to do at this point because I have not been able to find anything online related to my problem. Please advise if you have any suggestions. Thanks!

FYI: Antivirus running is Avast!

I was wondering if others experienced the same issues and if any of you have found a solution for this. If I may believe the Dell website we might not expect an update for this? This € 2000+ laptop is not even 1,5 year old!

It is not feasible for what ever reason if we have to reload Windows 10 from the factory image currently installed. Which Windows 7? 32 or 64 bit?
RIGHT click "computer".
left click "properties".

Is the computer new or pre owned / used / refurbished?

Did the problem begin right out of the box?

Have you contacted Dell? This system might be under warranty.

What happens if you boot directly to safe mode?

When you get your system stable and running good use a backup image program, there are free versions that work really well.
Keep the backup file on an external HD and restoring is easy.
Macrium Reflect

If you have a Seagate or Western Digital hard drive you can get a free version of Acronis, a very good image backup program, usually not free. You must have the hard drive in your system for these to work.

My home desktop is connected to a wireless router through AT&T U-verse and it's broadcasting just fine. I can see the name and everything when I try and connect on my laptop but there is always an error that brings me to a troubleshooting screen. I've made sure the password is correct by going to Start-Run, IPCONFIG and then typing my IP address into the address bar in my browser. I dont know what else I can do, I feel like I've tried everything! Help please.

A:Laptop (Win7 Dell Inspiron 1525) won't connect to desktop (XP Dell) wireless router

Sometimes, you need to replace the router.
Sometimes, you can call your service provider and ask them to take a look on line to see if the subscription needs to be refreshed.
But often, all that is needed (despite the fact that it is a lot of work) is to uninstall your existing system, then reboot, and reinstall everything.
You might also find success by looking at your device manager in Windows to see if you have any grey, red, or yellow flags by any related device. That may show you have a permanent hardware failure if you cannot restore it, then you are off to the store or your provider for a new cable modem or router.

A:no sound for desktop after update to windows 10

Hi: The product specs page indicates that your PC came with W7 64 bit. I can tell you that there is no W10 32 bit audio driver. If you inadvertently posted the wrong bit version, see if this W10 64 bit IDT audio driver works... This package provides the IDT Tempo High Definition Audio Driver for supported desktop models that are running a supported operating system. File name: sp71717.exe If not, there is a workaround that you can try to at least get the sound to work... Go to the device manager and click to expand the Sound, video and game controllers device category. 1. Select IDT High Definition Audio CODEC under that category.2. Select Driver tab.3. Click Update Driver... button.4. Select  -> Browse my computer for driver software.5. Select -> Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.6. Select  High Definition Audio Device (Not  IDT High Def...  this is important.) and click Next.    A warning message may appear,  but click Yes.7. Windows has successfully update your driver software.8. Restart the PC. The key is step 6.

Hi,
I have a new XPS 13 (Service tag 64K2KC2 ePSA Build 4304.07) that I have only had since the 16th of this month.
All has been fine until a couple of hours ago. A Dell message popped on the lower right hand corner to of the screen to tell me there was a Dell bios update. I selected to install the bios update and now the laptop will not boot.
I get the Dell logo and then a plain blue screen.
Any ideas how to recover the system?

Thanks,

Richard

Hi Guys,
Good Morning, I updated my Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 Laptop from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro by using Store Application.
After Waiting for almost 6 hours, Update was done and after Windows setup, Display was black, Cursor was blinking.....I checked in Microsoft website and i found that not only me and many Dell customers are facing the same issue. i was luckily able to boot to safe mode and i uninstalled the both of my video drivers and i am back to my windows 8.1. After i update my video drivers as mentioned in the link below, still my screen blacks out. So i had no other option than resetting my pc to windows 8 pro.
Video Driver Link : http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-15r-5537?driverId=PWTRP&osCode=W864&fileId=3287401962&languageCode=en&categoryId=VI
When i was checking for latest driver for Intel Graphics & AMD Radeon that supports windows 8.1, I am able to find a driver in dell website.
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/sg/en/sgdhs1/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-17r-5737?driverId=6GGGM why it's not yet updated in the corresponding product driver list.... Actually i think these are the fix. I am not sure.
If any one has updated and i need a dell support for this

A:Black Screen after Windows 8.1 Update in Dell Inspiron 15R 5537

Hi Guys,
After so much for research, I was able to figure it out the problem is because of Intel Video Driver. There is a beta Intel video driver package which supports Windows 8.1. Try to update that package and post your results. As i have already rolled back to windows 8. It will take atleast 4-6 hours for me to update the status. The link is below for Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 Model.
http://ftp.dell.com/published/Pages/inspiron-15r-5537.html and Install Intel HD Graphics 4400 Driver ver 10.18.10.3308. You have to follow the link as this driver is not yet uploaded in Dell Drivers & Downloads (refered in Dell Post)

I replaced the hard drive in my Dell Dimension E521, with a new 320GB (non Dell Specific) WD unit, and loaded Windows 7 Pro (again, non Dell specific version). The old hard drive was bad.

I downloaded the 1.1.11 BIOS update (http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDeta...) to a bootable USB flash drive. When I boot the computer off of the flash drive, it comes up with the C: thing and does nothing else.

Am I supposed to type something in there, to get it to update the BIOS or access the file on the flash drive?

I'm kind of new to this stuff, but learning...

I want to update the BIOS, to be able to install the AMD Athlon 64 X 2 6000+ processor. The current version is 1.1.6.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Hi All,
My problem is ... no, not quite so, my PROBLEM is Windows 10 Anniversary Update gets downloaded, installed and failed again and again. When it goes through Windows Update Center everything goes well but finally after a reboot I get a notification that the system couldn't install the update. No other information or error codes provided. After that Windows Update Center finds the same Anniversary Update and everything goes in circle. I called Microsoft Support three times with different engineers but with the same final result - the problem still unsolved. I used MediaCreationTool utility as well. With this utility the whole process goes well but finally I get popup window that says "Error occurred while installing update". When I tried to reinstall Windows 10 from the image created by MediaCreationTool I got error code 0xd0000034 (finally!!! something I can use to find a solution !!!), but looking through the Internet for this code didn't help to resolve this. Any other updates are installed with no issues. The Problem only with Anniversary Update.

Hey Guys

I am attempting to repair a Dell Inspiron 5520 Laptop for a friend of mine.

He's been having issues updating it for sometime and when he called me he was having a "Windows update needs your help. Windows update hasn't been able to check for new updates for 30 days" pop-up appearing every few seconds that was rendering the laptop almost unusable.

I managed to stop that by disabling automatic updates.

When I attempted a manual update I got the message

Windows could not search for new updates: Error Found Code 80070BC9

Other times it would say it needed to be restarted and would go into a restart loop that was generally
Restart one - no message
Restart two - configuring updates - 33%, 67%, 100%
Restart three - failed to configure updates - reverting - restarting
Then would go to the normal login screen

I tried SFC /Scannow which seemed to work and say a restart is needed to implement changes but then fails on restart

DISM didn't work when attempting to run it from the machine but got to 100% when I ran it from my own Win8 install disk but then failed and needed a restart to undo the changes.

I also tried a repair and a restore of the current Windows installation but got:
Error Code: 80070490 both times

I'm really not sure what to try next, the laptop didn't come with an install disk or serial so it seems restoring it from external media may be out of the question?

Any help is much appreciated!

Cheers
Brian

Hello and Thanks in Advance.

I am experiencing BSOD crashes and a buggy driver could be the culprit. Dell recommends updating the BIOS prior to the drivers.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/982135-learned-source-problem-bsod-but.html

I checked Dell's website and the current BIOS for my machine is A08 and my system at present is A05, so maybe this should be done anyway.

The BIOS update is just a .exe file.and its description is "Dell Computer Flash BIOS Upgrade."

I am afraid to run the BIOS update in "normal mode" because of these persistent crashes. Who knows what state my computer will be in if it crashes/freezes during a BIOS update.

My computer runs fine in "Safe Mode." Would it be OK to update my BIOS through Safe Mode so that I don't have to worry about my computer crashing in the middle of the update? Does the computer care if this is done through safe or normal mode? Should I log in as an administrator to do this also?

If anyone has any advice, I am all ears. Thanks!

Chris

I did an Automatic Windows Update, restarted, and my Desktop was black, all my shortcuts were gone, the windows and toolbar were from Windows 98, and I could not access any programs or files.

I restarted again, and now my desktop is back with all my files and programs, I can use the internet, but I cannot change the toolbar or windows back to Aero.

I tried to troubleshoot and I attached the screenshot below.

Something like this happened to me before with the update. I wish they would stop screwing me over with this bs.

Please help.

A:Windows update screwed up my desktop, Windows 98 toolbar

Something is wrong if you are getting burned with updates. Never once in my life did I or other people I know get burned by a Microsoft update like this, and I used windows me. Not saying it cannot happen, its just I suspect something else is wrong with your computer.

So lets find out whats going on here. Most people that have problems with windows is mostly caused due to poorly written programs by 3rd parties.

1.) What programs do you have running at startup?
2.)You may have programs running at startup that is causing this issue. Please see this tutorial to temporary disable them and see if the issue is resolved:

Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

3.) What security software do you use?

4.) Download the latest video driver for your laptop from here:

http://global-download.acer.com/GDFi...C=ACER&SC=PA_6

5.) Please Run sfc /scan now using option 2 in this tutorial: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Please post back the results.
Please indicate what message was displayed at the end:

Windows found no integrity violations

OR

Corrupt files were found, and windows was unable to fix them.

OR

Corrupt files were found, and windows successfully repaired them

6.) You can do a System Restore back to a point before this issue. But this is only a quick fix, we would need to find the real cause.

I have a dying Dell D610 laptop running XP Professional. I want to reformat/restore it, but I don't have the original OS disc (but I do have the original drivers/utilities disc.

But I DO have a legit Dell XP Home edition SP2 disc, with a key & everything (from my mom's Dell Desktop of about the same era as the laptop).

The question is now obvious, can I use the OS disc I have to re-do my laptop?

Thanks!

A:Can I Load My Dell XP Desktop Disc on Dell Laptop?

What do you mean by dying ? It would be senseless to reinstall, eg, if your HD was "dying".

As far as I know, an Install disk is not different for a desktop and Laptop. It will configure the OS based on the hardware you have on the laptop. Backup what you need from the laptop, and have at it.

PS: I am just another user, making a comment & do not work for this forum !

Hey all,

I'm at my wits end with this problem. My Windows Update screen, the desktop version, remains blank except when 'checking for updates'; otherwise it refuses to show either the 'Install Updates for Your Computer' panel nor the 'Windows is Up to Date Panel' (e.g http://winsupersite.com/site-files/w...ve30355831.PNG). For some reason, I can still download and install updates through PC settings --> Update and Recovery, but I can't install anything through here; I'm not sure why only the metro tile is working. I've run sfc /scannow as well as followed all the steps here (https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/kb/971058) to reset Windows Update, but nothing works.

Can anyone help? Thank you in advance!

Coqui, Whenever I see a Windows update problem on a Windows 7 or older computer with a legacy BIOS, the first thing I think of is rootkit (MBR infection).  I don't know if you have UEFI or legacy but I guess you could try to fix MBR.  (Backup your important personal files first ) http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/17521-how-fix-mbr-through-command-prompt.html And then scan computer for viruses. Ultimately, I would get my important files off of there and wipe drive with diskpart clean and then do clean install because you may not get all of the viruses with virus scan. Edit: Resetting the computer to factory defaults won't get rid of MBR infection (if you have a MBR infection...and I don't know that you do).

Just reinstalled my computer after having some trouble with my soundcard.

Everything was working fine until yesterday where all of a sudden the Windows Update window, my Desktop Properties window and my Computer Properties won't open up. They'll open up briefly for about 1/3rd of a second then close down again. I've tried searching for it but it seems I can't find any answer to my problem.

I thought it might be a problem with Dreamscene but couldn't find any proper information on how to uninstall it so haven't been able to give it a try.

Really getting annoyed since this is basically stopping me from getting my computer up to date and doing small things like changing my wallpaper.
Annoying to say the least.

Hello,

I got some serious problems. About one week ago I accidentally cut off power of my pc while he was updating. When rebooting I got nothing but a blank desktop image, unable to give any input (mouse, keyboard, control + shift + delete). Control + shift + delete made the screen go black, so I assume this was my computer "loggng off" (enter caused the blank desktop screen to appear again).

Normally I fix my computer problems myself, so I started to reboot in safe mode. This worked without flaws, I could start the system repair and startup repair. This however, made no changes (still got the blank desktop screen on booting windows in normal mode).

Then I decided to reinstall Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit entirely (on my ssd). There where a few problems (original installation cd wasn't recognized), but in the end (with someone elses cd), I got it running. I decided to start installing my motherboarddrivers (LAN, onboard VGA, ...). All went well. Then I installed the VGA drivers of my dedicated nVidia GTX 570, and there it went wrong; upon restart: same blank desktop. This time I had some input: I could right click on desktop, make new folders, go into configuration manager. But no cmd, no task manager, no msconfig, ...

So, I thought: my VGA card broke down; and I tried another one (nVidia 9800GTX). Same problems.
Fresh installation, now on a conventional 750GB HDD. Again: all went well, even installing the VGA drivers (note: I didn't install the mo... Read more

After downloading the MS windows updates, upon restart my desktop picture did not show up anymore. I tried to re install it, but it does not work.
I did a recovery to before the updates, but still could not set the picture as background. I did the right click on the pic to "set as desktop background" and in the control panel personalize-change theme setting for this computer. I can change the back ground color, but when I browse for the picture this comes up: (see attachment). I did run a virus check, ad-aware, S & D, malwarebytes and CC cleaner. I also checked in the search section, but being dyslexic I have a hard time following the written instructions unless they are exactly step by step.
As long I know there is no harm to come from this, I can live without a desk top pic.

I can pull up task manager, end task, but explorer.exe also ends. If I then run task explorer.exe, the little window comes back.

I've system restored to before the update and I'm fine, then windows reinstalls the update and I have the same problem. UAC is off, i'm on admin account.

I'm not sure whether this is a hardware issue, driver issue, or possibly a windows 10's bug causes conflict with 1820A
I got this laptop exaclt a month ago, it is windows 10 preinstalled
Everthing works fine, except my wifi is giving me some trouble
Whenever there comes a windows update that requires reboot, wifi got disabled as if the wireless card is not detected from PC
It would just show a red X mark on the wifi icon
and if I click on it, there's no enable / disable option; same happens in the settings, wifi submenu is nowhere to be found
Then I head into device manager, and believe it or not there is no wireless adapter at all
At first I thought the wireless card is dead, but after some long research on the web it seems more likely to be just driver-related issue. Turns out that I would have to delete the driver (unhide devices appears wireless adapter), restart the PC, and reinstall driver manually from device manager
Wifi is temporarily functional again using this workaround, but it is also getting very frustrating that I have to repeat all these steps once in a while and I can't enjoy using it like a normal laptop.
This doesn't occur on any of my previous laptop which have windows 10 too, so I'm really suspecting it must either be broadcom not providing a proper driver, or dell using faulty hardware.

My new laptop ran Dell Updates overnight a couple of days ago and I had to power it up the next morning, only to discover it was a complete restart and the programs I had open were closed. Luckily I think I was able to recover everything from the closed applications, but is there a way to tell Dell Updates when I want to restart the computer?
Also, I was able to do this with Windows 10 before the anniversary update, but the option seems to have disappeared in the settings now.

I would like to continue to use my old HP 5P computer that dates back to 1995. I just purchased a new Dell XPS420 computer running Windows Vista Home Edition. However, there is no parallel port on the new computer. Is there a cable that would connect to the end of the parallel cable from the HP printer and the free end would be a USB connection that I could then plug into the USB port on the Dell computer. Would this work?

I went to HP website and apparently the driver for the HP for Vista is the same one from Windows XP. Here is the HP information from their website:

HP LaserJet and Color LaserJet Products - Products Supported and Drivers Included in Microsoft Windows Vista
Your product is supported. Drivers for HP printers are included with the Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System.HP has a Windows Vista driver solution available for your product. This driver will enable your product's basic functions to work.
HP is committed to providing the best experience for HP products in the Windows Vista operating environment.
You can conveniently find this driver in your Windows Vista operating system, today.
At this time the driver will only be available on the Windows Vista operating system through the “Add a Printer” wizard. HP does not plan on placing this legacy driver on www.hp.com.

I've not had positive experiences with parallel-to-USB cables. I can understand not wanting to throw out a piece of hardware that still appears to work, but you might want to reconsider given the cost of the cable, replacement toner cartridges, and even power consumption.

Wasn't sure if this is the right category but I guess it's ultimately a question of hardware...

In case you don't want to read the whole background, my ultimate question is, Which power supply should I look to get to replace the dead one in the old unit?

I just moved into an off-campus house at college and the last homeowners left behind a lot of stuff, including what appears to be a functional Dell desktop PC. At least 10 years old, judging by the available ports on the MB and the other hardware inside. The unit is dead on its own, but I tried connecting the 20-pin part of my desktop's power supply to the old unit and the motherboard seemed to power up (light went on, CPU fan started).

The hard drive and CD-ROM drive didn't seem to power on, but I found what seemed to be a safety button (see first image) which I am guessing prevents those devices from powering on if the case is open. Can anyone confirm this for me? I want to know if anything else in this unit is dead, but it seems like everything was in great shape (not much dust, etc). I don't really want to pump more than like $50 bucks into this thing, as my goal was to use this PC as either a dedicated Linux machine or to host a web site (not expecting much traffic at all, and with FiOS Quantum 75/75 we have more than enough bandwidth).

The motherboard looks very much like the Dell OptiPlex GX260 SDT SFF Socket 478 (Image: http://attach.forum.ge/post-54-1270667615.jpg) although I cannot seem to find the exa... Read more

I have no idea if that model number is what you need, but it can be bought at the above link. 24 bucks, refurbished.

Google reveals other prices, most higher than $24.

I did a restart, logged in and screen remained blank. I tried to restart several times and had the same problem. Finally I did a system restore and booted okay. I then deleted all files and folders in Windows/SoftwareDistribution and changed the windows update setting to not check for updates because I didn't want the update to apply after any restarts. How should I go about fixing the problem so I can get and install updates. Any help would be appreciated and sorry for being long-winded.

A:June Windows 8.1 update caused desktop not to display

I have the exact same problem after installing the updates. I noticed that explorer.exe didn't start on my computer. If I start it manually it does show up in de task manager but nothing else happens.
Edit: I've added a screenshot of the updates.

Edit2: I have installed all the updates except for KB2969339 on a different windows and I didn't experience any problems. So KB2969339 seems to be the one causing all the trouble. You can rightclick on the update in the update list and click hide to hide it so you never accidentally install it again. However, I don't know anything about computers so I don't know if doing that will cause more problems later on.

Windows 7 Home Premium with patch to allow incoming RDP session has worked fine for years but quit working after latest Windows Update.

When I attempt to connect from the remote computer, it appears to connect momentarily, but disconnects immediately. On the remote computer, after the momentary connection, I see "please wait for the local session manager" for a microsecond, and then I'm disconnected.

I have Googled and read just about everything I can find, but I can't solve this.

In the event log, I see a remote login and then an immediate logoff.

I have repatched termsrv.dll, too, after replacing it with the original file first.

A:Remote desktop broken after latest Windows Update

Have you tried TeamViewer? I gave up on Remote Desktop years ago and have used TeamViewer since then countless times without a hiccup. It is free for consumer/non-commercial use.

Otherwise try a System Restore to before the problem began. Then hide the Updates offered until you can install each one singly to find the one that's causing the problem, which often will resolve itself.

I have tried connecting to my router with both wireless and lan cable but they both fail. What is strange is that my vista laptop (currently using) has no problems connecting either wirelessly or using the same lan cable as my desktop failed with.

My windows 7 desktop was working fine earlier today but after I went out it installed the updates and since then no amount of rebooting or restarting of the router has fixed the problem. Any ideas?

A:Following Windows 7 update, desktop fails to connect to internet

First thing to try is a System Restore to before the updates were applied, see if that fixes it.

Also look in Device Manager and see if anything is flagged with a yellow mark.
