I have the same problem.
Recently I updated my PC from windows 8.1 to windows 10.After almost a month I returned back to windows 8.1 from windows 10.
When I tried to install dell backup and recovery (Backup-and-Recovery_Application_64M9D_WN32_1.8.1.71_A00) I got factory error 5.
I cannot refresh my PC from windows also. I am getting the error “could not find the recovery environment”.
Now in command prompt
1. reagentc/info

2. reagentc/enable

3. Exit and reboot.
After the reboot I tried to install dell backup and recovery again. Then also I got the same “factory setup error 5”.

Then I checked the reagent/info in command prompt after reboot. It shows it is disabled.

Please help me.
Thank you

Before I updated my laptop to Windows 10 I created a factory recovery media with Dell Backup and Recovery as suggested by Dell.  The upgrade went very well, but now I am getting reminders from Dell to update my recovery media.  However, when I use Dell Backup and Recovery and click the Update Your Recovery Media option, it always says near the end of the update that an error occurred during the process.  What is the cause of this error?  Is it possible to create another factory recovery media using the same USB drive that I used to create the current one, i.e. overwrite the current recovery data with new data?  Thanks for any information.

Regrettably I learned too late that Dell Backup & Recovery 'might' encounter problems in Windows 10 if a user did not update 'DBaR' version 1.7 before an upgrade from Win 8.1 to Win 10. I have a Dell Inspiron 3647.
When I only select a few files to backup (e.g., pics, docs, printer software and a few apps) it would backup to my 32 GB USB flash error free.
But when I try a significant back up -- e.g., 8 GBs -- I get a display after 20 minutes, or so, that the backup created an error. [head scratch]
Even something less challenging for DBaR like running a Factory Recovery Media backup resulted in the same error. Yet using the Windows 10 Control Panel Recovery app completed a backup error free.
I tried more than one USB flash, I ran Dell Update, defragged my hard drive, disabled firewall and AV protection. Nothing seemed to help.
Am I correct to assume that Dell Backup & Recovery 'might' encounter problems in Windows 10?
Sure would be nice to at least backup costly apps like Microsoft Office.

Hey guys, longtime user of Sevenforums, here with a question about a computer I am fixing for a co-worker.

Specs:
Dell XPS 12 Ultrabook
Windows 8.1
Intel Core i5-3337U 1.8 GHz
4 GB RAM
128 GB SSD

Trying to use the Dell Backup and Recovery Option to get this back to factory settings for him. It's fully updated, Dell Backup And Recovery program is also updated to the latest version. When I go into the program, it gives me this error:

Any thoughts? Anything I should try? Otherwise, where can I find a Windows 8.1 Image for my computer to download and install via usb?

I have a Venue 11 Pro (7130 Pro/7139 Pro) and I was trying to make a new recovery drive before I upgraded to Windows 10.  Everytime I tried using the Dell Backup and Recovery software (Basic) the program was locking up or giving an error.  I also noticed it had an error the other night when it tried to install an update.  Today I uninstalled DBAR and downloaded the most current version available, Backup-and-Recovery_Application_GX7TX_WN32_1.9.2.8_A00.EXE.  Now, every time I try to install it, I get an error, "Factorysetup Error 6" and the program won't install.
I searched Google and the best that I came up with is a forum relating to "Factorysetup Error 5": http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/4677/t/19538385.  I tried some of the fixes listed there, but to no avail.  I tried the C:\REAGENTC /info but my Windows RE status: was Enabled already.  I even tried disabling and reenabling, but that didn't work.  I also tried right-clicking the installer and running it as an Administrator but that didn't work either.
I have attached the log file from the most recent failed installation.  Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your assistance!!!

Hi,
Just upgraded my new Inspiron do Windows 10.  Eveyrhing is now up-to-date (Windows updates, drivers, Dell updates, etc...).

Windows 10 has the ability to create a "Recovery USB Drive"... as well as the Dell Backup & Recovery application.  Which one should we choose ?... can they both be used to fully reinstall Windows 10 on a brand new disk drive ?  Is the USB recovery drive created with the Dell Backup & Recovery app is the same as the one created with Windows 10, except with a few more Dell applications ?

Oh and one last thing... let say in more than one year my hard drive crashes and I have to completely reinstall Windows 10, will I have to pay for it (since the 1 year free upgrade from Microsoft will have expired) or will I be able to reinstall and activate it ?

Thanks guys !

A:Dell Factory Recovery vs Windows 10 Recovery Drive

You'll need to use the windows 10 recovery, if what you want to do is restore windows 10. As for reinstall after 1 year, you won't have to pay anything, as your computer is activated under your Microsoft account.

I am replacing the 500 Gb HDD on my daughter's Inspiron 11 3147 laptop (bought Dec 2014) wit a comparable sized SSD. Dell sent me USB factory image recovery media that I have used successfully previously to reinstall onto the HDD, so I know it works with the original drive.  But when I use it to try to install Windows 8.1 onto the new system, it fails.  Boots into the Smart Restore, no other option.  The drive passes the initial diagnostics, I skip it trying to recover user files (the SSD drive is blank) and gives me error message:
Could not  read Operating System image
I tried using a couple of different methods before now:
Used Acronix Truedrive to clone the HDD onto the SSD - did not work
Tried using Dell's Backup/Restore tile/app in Windows 10 - that also failed.
Went into Setup, turned off UEFI SecureBoot; still fails.
Booted into Diagnostics, ran that, the drive passed (as did everything else).

Don't know what else to try - maybe reformat the SSD to wipe out anything on it from prior attempts with the other methods?  If so, how?

Hi everybody,
I have an Inspiron 7548 4K with W10 (upgraded from 8.1) and since a few days I've been having the following problem with DBAR (1.9.X.X). When I try to take a SYSTEM back up, it ALWAYS stops/fails to complete at 12% during the Backing Up module (checking system and building list complete OK). The message is "Operation Cancelled. Destination location unavailable or not enough space on the disk". It always happens at 12% of the process. I have tried it more than 10 times, with no avail. Further info:
1. The only change in my system was a W10 update of March 23, 2016. NOTHING else. Up until then everything worked fine.
2. Tried with both the external HDD with previous/existing backups AND a new/clean one. Both are 500 GB for backing up the internal 256 GB, so there is more than enough drive space. Also tried different usb ports in case one was malfunctioning.
3. Recovery media backup works fine. The problem is when it tries to proceed with system backup. I don't take data backups since I use cloud.
4. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling DBAR, keeping it below latest version 1.9.2.8. Same result.
Anybody?
Thanks,
Michael

I curently don't use Dell Backup and Recovery, and I don't run any Dell startup items or automatic services. I also don't have the Recovery Partition in my current deployment. Because the partition is missing, Dell Bu & Rec takes a while to start if I click on the tile. When it does start, it offers to rebuild my recovery environment. It looks like in the System Backup settings, I see under more options the following: Instant Restore status (currently turned to on) and statuses for Overlay Icon and Context Menu.

Because I don't run startups or automatic services, and because my Recovery Partition is missing, I wonder if it will do anything at all to turn off Instant Restore, Overlay Icon, and Context Menu. I don't like launching Sys Bu & Rec, but will do so if you think that turning off Instant Restore, Overlay Icon, and Context Menu will shut off additional features.

Dear Dell,
I am trying to create recovery discs from "Dell backup and Recovery application" however when i was asked to insert the second DVD,the optical drive keeps rejecting the DVD. The application will not continue to burn the second DVD and appears to be frozen. I tyied with different brands/makers of DVD and also -/+ R. Unfortunately .Issue remains. I was able to find this article   593906  Published on 2013-01-21  ( relative link http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&cs=19&docid=593906&doclang=en&l=en&s=dhs   ). Although i have done the updates ,i am still not able to create recovery discs !!   Current Issue:  after inserting the  3rd Disc application gives the following message "Dbr.exe -No disc found" and stays there and rejects the DVD.  I spoke with Dell's Greek Support team. I was told that warranty does not cover sw support even if my unit is less than a week old. Furthermore i was informed that although "Dell backup and recovery" application says DELL is not actually a Dell product thus they can't support it. They suggested my to use windows 7 file recovery instead (which needs at least 8 DVDs !). As you can understand this is a workaround and not a Solution.
I hope that someone from Dell is going to look into it and revert with a specific answer and permanent solution.   (Model  : inspiron 15  3521)&... Read more

A:Dell Backup and Recovery is Unable to Create a Recovery DVD on Windows 8

Hi ylikonomos,
You can try to uninstall and re-install Dell Backup and Recovery Manager and Dell Support Center. Follow these steps:

Press Windows+ 'X' key on the keyboard.
Select 'Programs and Features' from the context menu that appears on the left bottom corner.

Uninstall Dell Backup and Recovery Manager and Dell Support Center from the application list.

Hereafter, check the BIOS version installed on the laptop. Press Windows + 'R' key, type msinfo32 and press Enter.   Locate the BIOS version. If it is A04, the BIOS update is not required. If not, update BIOS. Before flashing the BIOS please check the following:* No external devices (printer, USB drive, SD card, DVD) should be connected.* All other programs should be closed and documents saved.* The AC adapter and battery should be connected during this process. The battery should be 10% or more than 10% charged.
Here is the link for BIOS update: http://dell.to/VBwSAh. The laptop will reboot after this update. Visit this link: http://dell.to/VBz1fr and click Dell Support Center. Download and install the application. Once done, visit this link: http://bit.ly/UUjIs0 and install Dell Backup and Recovery Manager. Reboot the computer and check if you are able to create the recovery media.
Please try these steps and share the status.

Is this true that it will restore your system to factory default settings? Is it activated through CTRL+11 when in boot up mode? I am assuming that CTRL+11 cannot be accessed through conventional Windows operation correct? (Meaning that this function will not do something if accidentally pressed in the Windows Desktop environment?) What are the advantages and disadvantages of this operation?

Jack

A:What is Dell's Factory Recovery Tool About?

Hi Jack1000, asuming your talking about "Dell system restore". This can be a handy little operation to carry out, BUT only as a last resort. It works in a similar way to system restore but different in the way that it will totally reset your system. Basically once it has completed, your pc will be as if you have just taken it out of the box. Everything you have done or installed will be reset to factory settings.

Would you please advise! Thanks.

*I tried creating Windows 7 Bootable USB and shifted the recovery files into it and the result was Boot MGR is Missing, I think I need to get the USB bootable / execute the same commands Dell does, which I don't know.
*I tried the .exe files included in my Recovery Files, they doesn't work.

I bought a new Dell i3847 and it has Windows 7 Pro 64bit factory installed on it.
I wanted to do a full system backup, but the Dell Backup and Recovery software will not allow me to do a system backup.  Further, I have been unable to create a system recovery disk using Dell Backup and Recovery.
I can't use the Dell provided system disk for recovery because it is clearly marked Windows 8.1

2) What is wrong with Dell Backup and Recovery that it:
a) can't create a factory recovery disk
b) won't allow me to create a system back up so I can return it to the factory state

Hi mimran143,
I appreciate that you have made a copy of the system image. However it seems to be not working due to the changes in the partitions. As you rightly mentioned, you can try performing a PC restore (factory default settings) which is in build in the system. Follow the steps below.
You can restore the system to factory state by following the steps mentioned below in a Windows 8 system.
1. Plug in the AC adapter.
2. Point to the right hand corner of the screen to bring up the charms bar.
3. Click Settings.
4. Select ‘PC settings, In the PC settings window, select ‘General’.
5. Once “General is selected, on the right side scroll down to click on ‘Restart Now’ under Advanced settings’
6. In the next screen click on ‘Trouble shoot’.
7. Click the Dell Backup and Recovery icon.
8. The system restarts and comes back up, click ‘Next’ on the Dell Backup and Recovery Screen.
9. The system would be checked to see if the smart repair option can fix the issue, click ‘Next’ once this is done.
10. You will be prompted to select the backup to be used, click the factory image option or select from one of the backups. Click Next.
11.You will be prompted to back up your files, if needed do so by selecting the option ‘Yes, backup my personal files’ (Make sure to have an external backup hard drive handy.) or select No, Erase my files.

Hi Guys can I ask for a little help please
My Dell Vostro laptop was running Windows 7 (64 bit) professional but a few months ago I made a backup of the windows partition with True Image Plus 2013 as a back-up, I then upgraded to windows 8 all was working ok for a while but I decided Windows 8 was not for me and decided to use the true image backup I had made of windows 7.
I booted my computer with the true image boot cd and selected the relevant backup image file, all was ok until One second from completion and then true image said the restore had failed.
I then tried to boot my computer but the MBR was missing I then tried to use a Windows 7 system dvd to repair the MBR but it would not work.
I then found out that when the restore failed it had destroyed my windows partition and my factory recovery partition, and a partition I had my data stored on, so now I am unable to restore my computer with the factory restore option.
Fortunately I had made some rescue dvd and I have my computer working again but I would like the recovery partition back working if I can
I you look at the disk management screen shot I have attached you can see that I have a partition with a size 750.0 MB and 750MB free.
But now I am using Macrium to make my backups and when I run a back-up it reports that a partition is called Recovery and it is 750.0 MB with 212.0MB used and 537.0 MD free please see second screenshot

The 750mb partition contains the files needed to boot windows. It is quite large because there may some oem tools on there as well.

You don't have an actual recovery partition containing the files needed to reinstall.

You can make one easily enough. It doesn't need to be a separate partition , you could use your data partition for that and still keep all your stuff on there.

I would use the latest installation media for that.

You can get it from here: Windows 7 Direct Download Links - HeiDoc.net

Or you could use what is on your recovery discs if you really want.

A:Dell Dell Backup and Recovery 1.8.1.71 failure

What version of Dell Backup--free or paid? Did it come installed on the new computer? Don't use old versions on the new computer. Make sure you have an external hard drive connected to save backups. You cannot backup to the computer's own hard drive since that is the drive that is being backed up. When the drive fails, the backup fails too.
You don't need to use Dell backup alone. You can use Backup that comes with Windows. It's called File History. Windows also has System Image Backup on the File History page. That will save everything on the hard drive including the Recovery partition. Save the image on the external hard drive.

I am very frustrated with my friends laptop. She asked me to restore her computer to factory settings. She is not at all tech savvy, so I know for a fact she did not do anything to mess it up. It was running fine, but she just wanted to clean it out and bring it back to like new. She pretty much only uses her computer for school papers and email. I have done factory recovery on many computers at this point and I have never had any problems at all until now.

First thing I did was hook up my external hard drive and saved all of her documents and pictures. I then restarted the computer and pressed F8 and then clicked on repair my computer. It took me to datasafe backup and restore. I went as far as to restore the factory image. I chose not to save any files and to restore it to new again. It completed as normal and I clicked restart. This is where things went very wrong.

When it restarts, a list of files pops up and then it says "Setup is preparing your computer for first use." It also shows another list of files that seem to be loading as well as it tells me that it is booting in safemode. Next thing it says is that "Setup will continue after restarting your computer". It then continues to restart and perform this boot loop until I turn it off.

I tried to repair the computer and it would fail saying it was offline. So, I plugged the hard drive into an adapter to hook it to my other computer. I opened the disk manager... Read more

A:Dell Inspiron 1545 continuously boot loops after factory recovery

When Recovery fails when run from partition on the HD, then the Disks which should have been made as a backup are used. If you didn't make these disks, then they can be ordered from Dell Tech Support.

You can also consider doing a superior clean reinstall using the Win7 installation DVD for her version with the Product Key on COA sticker. This actually makes the computer better than new since it doesn't have the freeloading bloatware and useless factory utilities which have better versions built into Win7.

The only Dell Utilities worth keeping are System Diagnostics which should maintain their hotkey to run from boot - try it now.

My problem is that I am trying to restore a friend's Dell Studio 1555 laptop back to its factory settings, I follow the procedure mentioned on Dell's website however there is no Dell Factory Image Restore option. I have checked the laptop's Disk Management and there is a Recovery partition, in fact there are 3 partitions:

1. A 39MB OEM partition with no letter assigned.

2. C: Simple Basic NTFS with Status Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition) 451GB.

3. Recovery: Simple Basic NTFS with Status Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition) 14.65GB.

In short, when the computer starts I hit F8, I enter the Advanced Boot Options and select Repair Your Computer. I then select the language and login with the administrative account, however there is no Dell Factory Image Restore option there. My options are shown the image below:

Another issue that concerns me is that on the picture above it says Windows 7 on (D: ) Local Disk, however there is no such partition on the laptop's disk.

I would be thankful if anyone could give some advise on how to restore the laptop to its factory settings using the recovery partition. Thank you.

A:Dell Studio 1555 to factory settings,no Dell Factory Image option

On a Dell, if some other OS was installed, the Dell "PC Restore" (Recovery Partition) is no longer valid (corrupted) and the only way to reinstall is with a Windows OS installation disc and then download whatever device drivers you need from the Dell downloads.

I used Dell Backup & Recovery to make two sets of recovery media (USB and Discs) for my Dell laptop running Windows 8.1 and both were successful.
However after this I noticed on my C: drive there was a folder named "System Recovery" that was created the same time as the recovery media. I cannot access this folder as I dont have permissions (although I am the system administrator) and the folder owner is showing as "unable to display current owner" and/or "unknown".
I know this folder is related to Dell Backup & Recovery but why, as the administrator, can't I have access to it.  I want to delete this folder, so how do I do that?
Any help in this regard will be much appreciated. Thanks.

No. Once the recovery partition is gone, there is no way to get it back.

At this point, use a disk imaging software to make an image of your entire hard drive so that you can recover quickly should your hard drive go bad.

Hello,
I have a problem with my Precision 5510.When I try to restore the Windows 7 to Factory Settings through the Windows Recovery Environment (F8 command), and I select Repair Your Computer, but Windows 7 normally starts without giving me any choice for recovery.
I have checked the partition set to recover, it is present and hasn't been deleted. I have also checked the folder through path  C:\Windows\system32\systempropertiesadvanced.exe, and I can see that the System Recovery and Backup is in, but if I find the System Recovery and Backup in All Programs through Start, there isn't.
I tried to reinstall the software System Restore and Backup, by downloading it through the Dell support, but it doesn't work, telling me the Windows Environment is missing.
How can I fix this problem? Is it possible that this error has been caused by the replacement of the motherboard? Or do I have to reinstall the OS from external media?
Thank you for your help.

Hi everyone.
I have a Dell Inspiron 3543 laptop. This laptop came with both the pre-installed Dell Backup&Recovery software and with a DVD disk that includes the data to format my laptop. I think both of them make the same operation: they install the factory settings and format my laptop. (Sorry for my illiteracy about these terms and issues). Until now, I have only used the pre-installed Dell Backup&Recovery to format my laptop.
Now, since the Dell Backup&Recovery software slows down my computer, I want to delete it. And if I need to format my laptop, I am planning to use my DVD disk. However, I am not sure whether I will be able to use the DVD disk if I uninstall the Dell Backup&Recovery software. And this is what I want to ask you. (My concern is that if I delete this software, I don't know whether my laptop will be able to read this DVD disk and format my laptop. I don't know whether this DVD disk can operate without the Dell Backup&Recovery software.) Does anyone know about this? Thank you very much in advance for help.

I made a factory image recovery on a USB using Dell Backup and Recovery.
I am in need of it after getting the poweliks virus on the computer, and feel as though a clean slate would be best right now.
I loaded up the program and went into "Recovery" but the program only recognizes the image that is the location called "Local" which I would guess is a separate partition for this purpose but I would like to use the one on the USB instead.
I don't know why the program won't read/load the USB as a recovery option. In "My Computer" the USB is read as "Factory Image Recovery" with the Dell Recovery icon.
Anyone know what I can do?
I am use to the old XP re-format and have *never* used a factory image or any recovery programs before.

Thanks for your time in advance!

Hi all,
How are you supposed to use the Check Recovery Media option in Dell Backup and Recovery?
1. When you create the Factory Backup media..At the end of the process it shows that the backup has been verified so do you only use the Check Recovery Media option if you have a problem with the backup later on?
2. When you Check recovery Media do you have to tick the USB flash drive at the create factory recovery media screen first (like you do when creating the factory media where a green tick comes up) before clicking on Check Recovery Media or do you go into the Check recovery Media screen first before inserting the USB flash drive. I notice that in the Check Recovery Media window there is a check recovery media box at the bottom of the screen but it doesn't do anything..its always greyed out
3.Can there be a slight difference in the size of the Factory recovery Media backups. I did one a couple of weeks ago..it was 7.97gb. I did another one yesterday so I had another backup and it was 7.96gb and I used all the same settings..I didn't change anything at all.

I have a Dell laptop running Windows 8.1 x64 with UEFI boot. I've been having problems with the Dell Backup & Recovery Utility showing errors. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program but this results in additional partitions being created on the hard drive! I now have 10 partitions on the hard drive ( mostly small) - see the enclosed reports.

Is there a way of reconfiguring the partitions on the hard drive to the configuration of a standard Windows 8 installation without having to wipe the disk and reinstall everything? I have Paragon Partition Manager and Paragon Backup in addition to using the Microsoft utilities (DISKPART). Note the laptop operates normally despite the extra partitions.

DISKPART Report:

Partition ### Type Size Offset

Partition 1 System 500 MB 1024 KB
Partition 2 OEM 40 MB 501 MB
Partition 3 Reserved 128 MB 541 MB

A:Dell Backup & Recovery Keeps Creating Partitions

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program but this results in additional partitions being created on the hard drive!

Stop using the Dell Backup and Recovery program - every time you install it It creates the OEM factory recovery.. It is known as First Run Software..

Good to run after a clean install to create the factory option..

The problem now is determining which partitions are good and in uses.. (which ones to remove)

Laptop came with windows 8 ???

I'm dealing with two Inspiron 3847's that have identical hardware.
PC #1 is running a factory-installed Win 8.1 and is waiting in the queue for Win 10.  On this system I used Dell Backup and Recovery from the start menu and chose Factory Recovery Media.  Contents of the resulting USB flash drive was:

Boot
File Folder

EFI
File Folder

preload
File Folder

AOUTORUN
Setup Information

BOOTMGR
File

BOOTMGR.EFI
File

MASTER
Text Document

Media
Icon

PC #2 is running Win 10, upgraded from a factory installed Win 8.1.  On this one I used:
Control Panel->System and Security->File History->Recovery->Create a Recovery Drive
I chose the option to copy the recovery partition.   Contents of this USB flash drive was:

boot
File Folder

efi
File Folder

sources
File Folder

bootmgr
File

bootmgr.efi
File

reagent
XML Document

Both flash drives show the exact amount of space used - just over 10 Gb.
So what's the difference?   OS differences aside, should these two recovery drives be functionally equivalent for their respective PCs?
By the way, I used the File History option on the Win 10 system because I could no longer even find how to run D.B.R.  But I see discussions in the community about upgrades to this application for Windows 10 so I guess it's supposed to be there somewhere - yes/no?

I have a new pc, with a raid setup, one small ssd drive for fast booting, and a 2 tb drive
when I try to install win 8 via the "upgrade" method, it seems to install, but at the end, i get the failed to install message.
its a dell xps one 27, and only 3 weeks old; I see a bunch of upgraded files and drivers on the dell site for win 8, but I assume you dont install those until after you have win 8 installed...of course, that is a moot issue until I get it installed!
I dont want to "break" my raid apart just to install win 8, so is there another way?
should I try and boot from the dvd I burned from the iso, and install it that way? And, if I do that, does it go on the small ssd drive or on the 2tb drive? Anyone familiar with this setup on a dell?

thanks!

Providing you only backed up the Windows partition and not the recovery partition then a system restore from your backed-up image, will leave the Dell recovery partition untouched, as far as I'm aware.

Hello everyone! Sadly my first post here is written under pretty bad circumstances.

I am one of the many people whose systems (in my case a Precision 15 5510) were "automatically" upgraded to Windows 10 without warning, as Microsoft changed the status of Windows 10 from an 'optional update' to that of a 'reccommended update'.

After the installation completed, I was presented with the EULA and selected the 'decline' option and Windows notified me that if I continue with this option it will 'attempt to re-install Windows 7' so I did that. After supposedly re-installing Windows 7, my system restarted and booted with the Windows 7 logo but before the login screen appeared I got a blue screen and the laptop restarted. This subsequently happened every time I attempted to start my laptop, except for when I tried to boot in safe mode (which it did successfully).

I restarted the laptop, pressed F8 and selected the Repair option and the Dell Backup and Recovery option after that. I selected the drive I want to backup (C from the menu and was notified to insert a Flash Drive or a SD card that has more than 43GB free. I inserted a 64 GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive (SanDisk Extreme, which is meant to be really fast) and clicked 'Next'. Dell Backup and Recovery has since been stuck on the next screen which says "Backing up your data and Dell Backup and Recovery settings" with the progress bar just flashing by rather than actually showing any progress. ... I have an Inspiron 7520 and uninstalled and reinstalled the new version of Dell Backup and Recovery Manager -- upgraded to premium to make sure that I would have full ability to use the program. Note: the old version didn't work at all -- hung up on backup, etc.
I have rebooted.
When I try and open the Manager interface, I can't. All I get is the clock logo with the hand spinning. I cannot set the destination. I cannot select what I want to back up. I've tried this several times and just get the spinning clock which I end up ending through Task Manager.
I have tried opening the Manager from the installed link on desktop, from my list of programs, from the Start menu, and from the tray icon. Nothing works.
Any suggestions?

A:Windows 8 Dell Backup and Recovery Manager doesn't work

I have the same issue with the non premium version, I made the mistake of upgrading to v1.0.0.4 that is available for download and now have the same spinning clock, the program never loads so can't do anything with it. I have tried twice now to uninstall and then reinstall but still the same issue with spinning clock.
This is on a brand new XPS 8500 running windows 8. The reason I tried upgrading is that the version I had would not create recovery disk on usb key (would take forever to see the usb key and then would fail with pretty much useless error message before writing anything to the usb key, all it would do is format it to something that could no longer be read by windows.

Hi,
I have a new Dell XPS8700 (i7 CPU, 16 GB RAM, Windows 8.1) and everything was fine until the Dell Backup and Recovery software appeared a couple of days ago, i.e. a Window appeared and prompted me to initiate / install the software (can't actually remember exactly what the message was...). Anyways, it seemed to load up ok (albeit very slowly), but ever since then the computer is running at snail's pace, i.e. videos play jerkily and it has to stop and think before opening some files. Very annoying.
I can't be 100% that it is the Backup and Recovery Software that has caused this, but the slow down exactly coincided with it, and I haven't done much else to the computer. The only things I've done are to get rid of McAfee now the free trial has run out and download Avira anti-virus software, and install Adobe Lightroom (and download a load of photos). These changes didn't cause any problems.
I'd be very grateful for any help. If it is this software, can I just uninstall it? Do other people get this problem?

I've been using Dell Backup and Recovery on my XPS18 since I bought it.  It has worked through Windows 7, Windows 8.1 but now no longer works in Windows 10 for some reason.
I'm using the same external WD drive I bought with the XPS18.  The drive is connected directly to the USB 3.0 port on the XPS18.  It is a 1TB My Passport WDBACX001088K-1.  Backups used to take about 3 hours.
When I first upgraded to Windows 10, I was informed that there is a new version of Dell Backup and Recovery.  So I upgraded it to the latest version, and it installed properly.
I was then warned that since I now have Windows 10, I should do a full System Backup, so I did that and this is where the problems began.
It asked me if I wanted to Delete my Windows 8 backups to free up space, which I did.  Then, when I start the System Backup, it does the steps... Create list of files to be backed up.. it finishes, although it takes a while to do it, then when it starts the backup it takes FOREVER to get to 29% and then just fails.  I mean it takes about 18 hours to get to that point.  I have tried this three times. On the last attempt, I turned off my Carbonite backup and my Trend Micro, turned off the screen saver and set the power settings to stay on indefinitely, and the same thing still happens: Gets to about 29% and stops with a very simple message saying "backup failed", with an OK button.  (It might say something a little more than &qu... A:Dell Backup and Recovery Stopped Working after Windows 10 Upgrade

Exact same issue here - Dell Inspiron 2350. Backup and Recover has always been slow but the new version is super slow and has failed twice (after 14 hours!!).
My view is that it is not worth the time and effort to make it work. I have a system recovery usb stick and hopefully that will be enough to boot and access the internet to reinstall windows and download drivers if a major failure occurred.
I will uninstall Dell Backup and Recovery as your post has been up a couple of months and no reply and it is a major resource hog on startup and there is no way to tell it to bugger off!

My computer stopped working and so I tried a factory reset that should make my computer like it was when I first had it. I stuck disk 1 and it worked. I then stuck disk 2 and halfway throgh it gave me an error that said something like if it happens again to contact HP.

What can I do to fix this? I then installed Linux and it worked but I want my Vista back. Thank you all so much for the help

A:Error when factory reset using (recovery disks)

Hello Nutronium, welcome to Vista Forums!

If the factory installed recovery partition is still intact, have a look at the instructions below; I hope it helps, please remember to post back with the outcome.

HP Recovery Center

Be advised that this will take the machine back to the point when you first took it of the box.
The "HP Recovery Center" will give you the option to send to backup anything you
don't want to lose, so have backup media available to use if you choose this option.

With the machine off press the power button, as soon as you do that start tapping the F11 key.
It may take several attempts to do this, if the first attempt fails, try again.
That should take you to the HP Recovery Center. When there just follow the prompts.
It is pretty much self explanatory. From the time you boot into F11 (not counting
any backups you choose to make) you should be back on a working desktop in about
30 minutes. After it restarts just follow the prompts again to finish the process.

If your first option is system restore select no, which should take you to system recovery.
You want to try system recovery not system restore, unless you have good restore points!

Hello!
I have a new Dell Inspiron 620MT with Windows 7 and have just run the Setup procedures. This included the creation of 3 DVD's for Recovery Disks. My hard drive has 33 GB of content as delivered, including Microsoft Office Home and Business and several "freebies" Dell includes. The setup told me my 3 DVD's include 10.88GB, I "think" but am not sure Setup told me it was using compression to load the DVD's.
What is the content of these 3 DVD's, please? I've called Dell multiple times and get conflicting, contradictory and changing answers to my question? I am wondering if it is ONLY Windows 7 or is it some partial or complete set of everything on my hard drive?
Unrelated, Dell support sent me a flash drive of Windows 7 restore software that is "bootable." I looked at it and it contains only 4GB. That is why I am thinking there may be more content on the 3 DVD's 10.88 GB.
I simply want to know what I have as a base in the way of backup BEFORE I migrate everything from my 7 year very old Dell Dimension 3000.
Thank you to whoever can help me move forward.

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 15R 5520.

Previously when booting windows and rapidly pressing F8 and then choosing repair computer there was an option to restore the factory image on the repair menu.

I then installed a clean windows retail disk and now when I press F8 and choose repair the Dell Datasafe restore option is gone. The recovery partition is intact and still contains the Factory.wim image.

Is there anyway I can get this menu back or restore the factory.wim without it?

Thank you!

A:Lost restore from backup (Dell Datasafe) option in recovery menu (F8)

Hi,

You have done clean windows installation with the help of retail disk. The Boot manager, which has the feature to boot the system, has changed due to which you are not able to get the, “Repair My Computer Option”.

Dell Data Safe Local provides you with the capability to create a set of Recovery Discs that contain a complete copy of all software installed on your Dell computer. By creating these Recovery Discs, you are making a backup of all the software that was installed on your computer at the factory, which allows you to reinstall all applications, drivers and the Windows operating system shipped with your computer. While there is a similar copy of the software in the recovery partition, creating recovery discs provides additional protection for the factory installed software.
Hope this helps

We have no data that needs backing up as the machine is being assigned to a new person in the company and we don't need any installed programs so we purchased the Dell OS recovery and restore USB for the machine in the belief that this would allow us to restore back to day one.

My issue on my friend's Windows 7 Home Premium, is that he at one point probably somehow made safemode booting as default (I think it's prob virus and other stuff honestly). Well to solve this issue we tried factory reseting the laptop (The laptop is Dell Insprion 14) to when it first came out, hoping to rid of the excess files, virus, and to end the safemode issue (oh yea, when we boot the computer up it starts to make a window of black and white letters saying "Loading Window files" which it's loading system, x32, drivers, then it ends the window and then says it's loading the 4 processors (multiprocessor kernel), then says smh like booting safemode- minimal services. But when we restored the computer to when it first came out it worked, then restarted the computer, but when it restarted it still booted in safemode the exact same way like before also. After doing that it leads to smh like, "seting up for first use" and pops up a little window with tons of files being loaded or deleted (not sure) afterwards, it says setup will continue after restart, which it does and when it restarts it repeats the safemode and setup thing again, so to solve it I tried to do startup repair, which failed, and then saw that I can use command prompt, but now I have no idea what to do, plz help...

Hi,

So frustrated and baffled by what shouldn't be a big deal... after a week of searching online/trying things, I'm ready to pitch laptop out the window. :/ I'm hoping someone recognizes this situation and what might be necessary to fix it.  I'll try to make this as brief as possible.

This is an HP Envy 14, originally bought w W7. A month ago i accidentally "upgraded" to W10 and didn't revert back to W7 in the 30 day window.  So last week I was trying to get rid of W10, which I didn't like and had multiple issues.  Eventually I booted off the recovery discs I made when I got the laptop years ago, all 4 discs used, and it seemed to be installing fine.  Messages on laptop that it was setting computer up for first time use, etc.

Then when the "Starting Windows" message comes up w the W7 logo, it's followed by the Windows Recovery error message (Windows didn't shut down correctly last time; start in Safe Mode, etc) and is in a loop. Going into Safe Mode results in an error message that Windows can't complete installation in Safe Mode and to restart the computer.  This leads to the HP screen, which automatically starts up W7, which results in the error message.

This happened both when I ran Factory Reset and I think the other option was System Restore.

Also tried using a repair disc, which didn't fix the problem.

Looks like it is time to retire XP. I have some programs that I am quite attached to but they won't install on Win7 using the original disks presumably because the Win7 doesn't like the setup.exe. I have had to move my XP directories and sub directories to the Win7 machine. Since these are all 32bit programs they all work BUT there is no registry support which results in some "inconveniences".

Three questions:
1. Can I use Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit to make the setup.exe compatible so I can do a normal install and get registry support?
2. If not can I use ACT to discover the registry calls and add them to the registry.
3. Most all the info on the ACT is focused toward enterprise. Does anyone know of a tutorial or general instructions for a standalone PC?

Thanks for your help

Hello Boa, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could try installing the program using XP compatibility mode on the setup.exe to see if that may help.

This indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed. Updating the drivers from HP's site would be the answer.

As for limited BIOS access you can thank HP for that. Dell does the same thing.

Question: Before doing a system recovery did you make sure first that the system was completely clean of all infections?

Hi -

Given virus, I suggest that you wipe the entire HDD with KillDisk, then use HP OEM Vista recovery DVD to reinstall Vista.

KillDisk --> http://jcgriff2.com/0x1/killdisk_imgburn.html

Once at Desktop post-Vista installation, allow Windows Updates to take over -

www.update.microsoft.com

For info, BSOD bugcheck 0x116 = video TDR timeout = the video driver was unable to reset in the alloted time.

Windows Updates should install an updated video driver. If not, go directly to the video device manufacturer's web site and obtain update, e.g., NVIDIA, ATI, etc...

I would run KillDisk because aside from infection remaining on the HDD hidden somewhere, there is no reason other than hardware failure that would cause a BSOD immediately following fresh Vista installation.

Factory Restore is to the state it was when you first got it.
You will then need to run 4 years worth of Windows Updates bit by bit - don't be tempted to allow Windows to update them all in one go. Choose them in block of say 10, chronologically, restarting the system carefully each time.

Hi All

I have a Dell Inspiron 3847 and my WiFi keeps disconnecting, after having a look around at other threads the consensus was that the latest Dec 2014 update for the Wireless 1705.802.11b/g/n (2.4GHZ) cures this. Just to add I get the exclamation mark on my WiFi and when I run the troubleshooter it repairs the error and fixes a problem with adapter or access point.

However when I try it gives me an error saying the driver cannot be installed, I have copied the Installation Log and pasted it below. This is the page where I got the driver:

I contacted Dell and they tried to install it remotely but could not and now they are saying that I need to do a complete OS install from scratch. When I asked if they're certain it is the OS they said this was still troubleshooting and it could be something else so I am loathed to do this unless it is absolutely necessary.

Any help or advice would very gratefully appreciated.

First I installed SP2 and when the machine restarted it would only boot into a black screen that wanted me to start in safe mode, last known good config, etc. It would just stay in this loop with each boot.

I then downloaded and installed SP 3. Same this over again.

The black screen made mention of a hardware problem, but this machine has not had anything added to it.

Ok I just bought a used Dell laptop with win7 Home 64 & from my understanding the boot disk is actually now on a partition?

How do I access this partition in order to completely format the computer & reinstall a nice clean setup?

Thanks.

I am helping a frind out by re-installing Vista on her laptop after she bought a brand new hard drive. BTW...the following problem occurs no matter what OS I try to install. After I boot from the CD and windows loads the setup files it reboots to continue installing windows...only it doesn't reboot. It tries to reboot but it never does and just sits there with a gray screen for a minute then it reboots itself again. It will keep doing this ad infinitum. It is a Dell Vostro 1500. The CD/DVD drive works perfectly fine when reading discs. I can find no information about this problem. Please help!! You can email me at <email removed>
