Dell XPS 8700 BACKUP-RESTORE MEDIA

Q: Dell XPS 8700 BACKUP-RESTORE MEDIA

I just made a new Complete Factory Restore of my XPS 8700. I used an external WD My Passport drive. I cleaned and reformatted the drive before I started and the creation seems to have been successful. I wasn't sure how much space it would take so I had this 500GB Passport available. The restore took about 10 GB. MY QUESTION IS : Can I store other folders/files on this drive and it won't mess up the restore function?RegardsJH

A: Dell XPS 8700 BACKUP-RESTORE MEDIA

As far as I know yes, just keep your backup files/folders in a single folder in the root directory. The restore program should ignore it since I believe its just a generic script that it runs.

My PC went into a restore mode on its own after locking up.  It had been updated to Win10, but after the restore it was back to Win7.  Most of my files are there along with MS Ofiice and the related data files.  Missing are my email program (Mozilla) and files and my Quicken and files.  There are a number of locked files that return "access denied" when I try to open the file or directory.  I'm guessing everythign is there, just hidden.  i have not reinstalled Mozilla or Qbooks yet, just in case that buries the files deeper.
Someone suggested i reinstall Win10....MS said they would give me another install for free after the 7/29 deadline, but again, I want to see if I can recover my files.  There is no restore point to go back to since the Dell utility ran.  Any direction will be appreciated.

Hi,
Question Re: XPS 8700 with Windows 8.1.  if computer is no longer able to boot into Windows.
And Restore is not able to correct issue.
And Refresh is unable to correct issue.
But Dell Backup and Recovery indicates no issues were found and now asks to Reinstall Operating System.
is Installation Restore/Original Image Media required to complete the Reinstallation usind Dell Backup and Recovery?
Alternatively if the Reset My PC option is used is Installation media required?
Thanks.

Hi all,
my Latitude E6540 refused to boot this morning and all automatic repair options failed. No sweat I thought and installed a Windows System Image created about a month ago. Now I proceeded to restore the missing data using DBR - I'm doing automatic daily backups - only to find out that this software apparently requires a system backup to work. The problem is that after the last update, DBR refused to accept my Toshiba usb hard drive for system backups, stating that this media device could not be used for system backups - that's why I created a Windows System Image. Nowhere does it state that DBR does not backup data at all if a different software is used for system backups. It seems to me that this is a pretty sh.... piece of software (I bought the premium version). I have learned it the hard way. From now on I will not rely anymore on Dell software for backups. Just thought I'd let everybody know.

Hi,
I did a full backup using vista backup and recovery centre onto a seagate 160gb usb drive.  The backup completed successfully so I rebuilt the machine.

On trying to rebuild, I run bakup and restore center and it cant even see the drive (it can see the C partition, the E (recovery) partition and nothing else.  It doesnt see the D (Data Partition) or the USB device.)

Tried copying it to the E partition and forcing it to use it but get  backup location not found which is mentioned elsewhere as an issue with mediaid.bin.

any ideas, i now have a shiny sparkly new machine with no data on it.

The data is there in a compressed form but id much rather restore properly.

grateful for any help.

Cheers

I have an XPS 8700 desktop all stock bought a little over a year ago. Last night I turned it off when I went to bed. Today I turned it on and it will not go past the first dell loading screen. It freezes and I'm unable to press any buttons (F2, F12 etc) I put it a different hard drive to see if that was the problem but it still continued. HELP PLEASE??

A:Dell XPS 8700 Desktop, Freezes at dell loading screen unable to boot up.

Hi Mattmazz
Thanks for writing to us.
Please disconnect all the connectors and then hold down the power button for 15 secs, now remove the memory modules and put them back one by one and observe for any changes.
If possible please try another set of memory modules. If there is a separate graphics card, remove that as well and try the onboard.
Regards

After downloading Win10, I started having problems with "program not responding" notification.  Took computer to my computer repair guy and he had to reinstall Win 10.  He reloaded all my files and I had to reload programs. I have Dell Backup and Recovery on my external HDD.  Each time I start my computer, Dell B&R starts up and wants to perform a "recovery" of my computer.  Each time I have to disconnect my external HDD and restart my computer in order to load Win10 and my programs.  I'm avoiding restarting my computer because of this problem.  How do I resolve this problem?.  How do I delete Dell B&R from my computer?  I don't know which version of B&R I have.

A:Problem with Dell Backup and Restore program

Hi Tony,
Thank you for writing to us!
If the recovery image is in an external Hard drive which is plugged in and it reads the external hard drive with error recovery mode kindly check BIOS and check Boot sequence to primary hard drive.
If the external Hard drive has only the recovery image we would advise you not to leave it plugged in .
Thanks

I have a Dell XPS800 which shipped with XP Pro Media Center Edition. Lost the disks in a move last year. Requested replacement disks from Dell, but all they had were XP Pro non-media center (which they shipped). So I backed up and did a restore to factory state from the 3rd partition (Ctrl-F11). All is well UNTIL the inevitable HD failure, so, is there a way to make a bootable clone/copy of the restore partition as a recovery CD or DVD since the partition is FAT32 and hidden? I have been able to determine it was created by Norton Ghost v 8.5 . And yes, I am purchasing a second identical drive to do a full XXClone, but HDs are still not a true backup and I hate the install/uninstall hassle of Norton(Symantec).

A:Clone/Backup Dell Restore Partition?

Hi jagsrus and welcome to TSF !

Can you still boot within Windows ? See if there's some preinstalled program in the start menu that allows to create backup/recovery CD's, it's not available for all models though.

What's the brand and model of the failing hard drive ? Some hard drive manufacturer's utility softwares can make a 1:1 copy of the whole drive to another drive.

I've never tried to create a recovery CD from the backup partition using something else than the preinstalled program made specifically for that purpose so can't help much with that. I asked the question once about cloning a whole drive content and got this reply, don't know if it'll help.

Hi tankcramer,

Welcome to Seven forums.

Factory restore and Dell Datsafe Restore are two different options for restoring the system. You are trying to restore the system using Factory restore.

Check this link below for Factory restore:

http://dell.to/12PHD5J

And this one for using Restoring using Datasafe if you have created a image backup earlier:

Keep us posted with the results so we can advise you further.

Windows10 Recovery USB Media/Drive - Control Panel ( Backup & Restore )

I have upgraded to Windows 10 from Widows 8.1 (pre-installed) , on my "ACER Aspire E1 472P- 6491" laptop by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer and successfully activated Windows 10 . I do not have a Windows (8.1 or 10) product key , as the Windows was pre-loaded on the laptop .

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 15R 5520.

Previously when booting windows and rapidly pressing F8 and then choosing repair computer there was an option to restore the factory image on the repair menu.

I then installed a clean windows retail disk and now when I press F8 and choose repair the Dell Datasafe restore option is gone. The recovery partition is intact and still contains the Factory.wim image.

Is there anyway I can get this menu back or restore the factory.wim without it?

Thank you!

A:Lost restore from backup (Dell Datasafe) option in recovery menu (F8)

Hi,

You have done clean windows installation with the help of retail disk. The Boot manager, which has the feature to boot the system, has changed due to which you are not able to get the, “Repair My Computer Option”.

Dell Data Safe Local provides you with the capability to create a set of Recovery Discs that contain a complete copy of all software installed on your Dell computer. By creating these Recovery Discs, you are making a backup of all the software that was installed on your computer at the factory, which allows you to reinstall all applications, drivers and the Windows operating system shipped with your computer. While there is a similar copy of the software in the recovery partition, creating recovery discs provides additional protection for the factory installed software.
Hope this helps

I need to wipe and reinstall Windows 8.1 because the administrator password has been lost, no password recovery disk is available and as the machine now only logs into the Guest account and you cant run the Dell Recovery and Restore from a Guest account without logging in as an admin

We have no data that needs backing up as the machine is being assigned to a new person in the company and we don't need any installed programs so we purchased the Dell OS recovery and restore USB for the machine in the belief that this would allow us to restore back to day one.

I was informed that the version of Windows that will be restored is 8.0 and then require upgrading again after... not a problem

Unfortunately the recovery process insists on running a data backup so it can be restored later ...

- If I shutdown the PC when logged in as Guest before running the USB OS recovery, when it gets to the Initialise Backup and Migration it goes to the desktop and does nothing

- If I log out of Guest before shutting down it sits in at the USB OS recovery screen with "Initialise Backup and Migration" "Please Wait" and the rotating processing icon

I have waited waited 2 hours after both the above and no apparent progress so had to force shutdown.

All tests up to this point find no errors ... well there aren't any, we just don't have the admin password !

I advise securely wiping your system:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/securely-wipe-your-hard-drive-with-dariks-boot-and-nuke-dban/
Download the new Windows 8.1 with update 1 a.ISO:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-microsoft-windows-and-office/download-microsoft-windows/download-windows-8-1-retail-and-oem-iso/
This will work with your OEM license, see a clean install of Windows for more details:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/a-clean-install-of-windows/a-clean-install-of-windows-8-1/
This will take you through the installation of Windows 8.1, its drivers and making a recovery partition from the clean install using Dell Backup and Recovery.

I just received my refurbished Dell Precision 5510 from Dell Outlet and I decided to create a restore media on Windows 10 and it's simply refusing to work.
I have a 32GB USB 3.0 drive that has been used for restore files before, I completely formatted the USB drive using SDFormatter and set the partition type to NTFS, it shows up as being available and with with 29.9 GB of free space.
I have tried to find another way to create this media and I can't, I can de-select "Back up system files" but that would essentially create a bootable USB drive with no Windows restore data to use with it.
I did an "sfc /scannow" in command prompt run as Adminstrator but it did not find anything wrong.
I've searched for a solution but couldn't find one, I really think it's important to be able to restore Windows because it seems as though the license is tied to the original install, my Windows shows and activated and I'm afraid to continue without recovery media because it seems like Dell won't be able to diagnose the problem from what I've read online regarding this particular issue
Has anyone else had this happen, what did you do to fix it? I know that I can clone the full 512GB partition but that seems silly and counter intuitive.

EDIT: Rewritten for clarity
On Realtek ALC3861 Audio Driver (ver. 6.0.1.7525, A00) for Windows 10, there is no longer a button labeled "Show Meters" under Speakers/Headphones > Maxx Audio Pro in the bottom right corner (please see attached screenshot). This button in previous versions of the driver for Windows 7 opened a new window with sliders to balance front and back speakers in a surround sound setup.
What I did:
Updated my OS from 7 to 10 and updated the Realtek audio drivers accordingly - to the above mentioned version.
What I expected:
The "Show Meters" button would be present in the newest Realtek driver.
What really happened:
Upon upgrade to the newest driver, the "Show Meters" button disappeared.

I have reinstalled the newest driver multiple times with no avail and tried the driver from Windows 8.1 and the default driver from Realtek with worse affects (Dell Audio window is missing most elements/drop down options, etc)

If anyone would know how to address the issue, if this is intentional, or who to escalate this to, I would appreciate it.

A:Latest Version of Dell Audio is missing "Show Meters" button. (Windows 10, Dell XPS 8700)

I feel that I should be more observant. In Control Panel > Sound > Playback > Select the Realtek device > Properties > Levels there are the exact changes I need. I don't know why I didn't notice until now. Could explain why there was no "Show Meters" button in this release but I thought Windows 7 also had the same leveling and there was the leveling in Dell Audio as well.
I'm still going with a new sound card from Creative however, seen a super nice $70 one that looks awesome and seems to have features to match.

What are the possible cpu coolers that you can install on the mobo dell xps 8700 motherboard without any fancy ghetto mounting. Just as if it was a normal motherboard?

A:CPU COOLER DELL XPS 8700

The XPS 8500, the precursor to the XPS 8700, has standard Socket 1155 spacing. Socket 1150 shares the spacing of the 1155, and thus I believe an aftermarket cooler should work.
A Cooler Master Vortex was a perfect fit on my XPS 8500 motherboard, and I assume the same would hold true for an XPS 8700. You will use optical drive-type screws to fasten the cooler to the board rather than the flimsy plastic push-pins.
Looking at an XPS 8700 mainboard on eBay, I can see a standard four-pin CPU fan header, just like that of the XPS 8500.

Hi everyone, I am newbie here. Recently I need to upgrade my ram on XPS8700. And I went to Best Buy and bought a "PNY - 2-Pack 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 DIMM Unbuffered Non-ECC Desktop Memory Kit". It does not work, computer can not power on with flashing orange lights.
So I went to Crucial website, it recommends me to use a DDR3L RAM. I saw all the DDR3Ls are for laptops. Could it be used in my desktop? And my current RAM is Hyundai. Could it be mixed with other brand like Crucial or Kingston?
My pc specs:

A:Dell XPS 8700 RAM upgrade

Laptops first started using DDR3L which is why the market is flooded with it, however you just need to look for the desktop version for your computer.  If you go to crucial they should have an auto test that will detect the correct ram for your machine and give you the list of options you can pick from.

Good day everyone!
This is my first post to the forums, as I am a recent Dell convert - Dell monitors, a tower and speakers all make up my new workstation! One thing I wanted to do to improve performance from the get go was to use a solid state drive as a boot drive as well as some storage for some intensive games (like Flight Simulator) and for work. This is the drive I chose:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-EVO-2-5-Inch-MZ-75E500B/dp/B00OBRE5UE/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1473820312&sr=1-1&keywords=samsung+850+evo+500gb

I did not, however, do as the installation had recommended by connecting it to the USB port with a SATA to USB converter because I had forgotten to buy one, and decided to forego that step and just install it straight in the case, using one of the spare hookups for power for the HDDs and plugging in the SATA cable to the motherboard. The SATA cable I had no issue with, but the cord for the power supply may not be fully plugged in (I heard a click, but the cord is a little short).
I went to go clone the drive with the included Samsung Magician/Data Migration tool and all went well, it only took about 4 minutes to clone the OS (nothing else is installed yet basically). I was hoping that the changes would have turned the SSD into a hard drive/boot drive, but when I turned it back on, the OS was still booting from the old C: drive.
I went inside device manager and the SSD shows, but it's not being recogniz... Read more

I'm considering installing an SSD on my desktop computer, and have read several places I need to set my BIOS to AHCI mode. I have no such mode listed in my BIOS. The only 2 options listed are LEGACY and UEFI. Is Legacy just Dell's description for AHCI? Can I just install using LEGACY? I can't seem to get any answers from the Dell forums. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit OS. I think the bios version is 8. If I use the LEGACY mode, will Trim still work? This will be a clone, not a fresh Windows install.

Hi! After trying for a long time to install the Windows XP Professional x64 Edition with Service Pack 2, I finally got the installation to complete successfully. I was able to do this by "slipstreaming" the AHCI drivers into the XP installation directory and using nLite and burn the ISO to a CD. The installation completed fine with no issues. But now when I try to boot the computer for the first time I am getting the dreaded BSOD message quickly flash and then the computer restarts:

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Attempting to boot the computer in safe mode gives the same message as well as starting Windows with Last Known Good Configuration. I installed a Samsung ssd 850 evo on my 3 month old dell 8.1, it ran extremely fast , no issues at all.  I was so satisfied until the operating system crashed.  I tried to reinstall the hhd and I get this error 0xc0000225, computer needs to be repaired.  Computer will not let me do anything.   I did put the original hhd back in and it seems to run ok.  As before I cannot put the hhd in.

I have a new Dell XPS 8700.  I had to reinstall the operating system and now the Network Controller and SM Bus Controllers need drivers.  In Device Manager, they appear with Yellow Triangles with Question Marks.  I have searched the net for drivers through Windows to no avail.  Any advice on how to clear this up?

A:Dell XPS 8700 Driving Me Nuts

Hi teacherdan,
It seems that the wireless and chipset drivers are missing. Click on this link http://dell.to/11iojrK -> type the service tag of the computer -> choose the operating system -> expand Chipset, download all the options listed. Then expand Network, download and install either Dell DW1703 or Intel 6235 WIFI driver.
Hope this helps.

Greetings,
I have had BSOD's for over two weeks.
Sometimes happens while gaming, sometimes while surfing and rarely while watching videos.
Based on whocrashed it says the following, the Razer keyboard has been the problem after applying tutorial settings for Driver Verifier and which had been reset to normal settings.

Since I upgraded to W10, the Audio Service and internet connection both keep crashing. Randomly.

My computer is the only one hard-wired to the router. We have others and none loses their signal. I made sure to try wi-fi on and off, no difference. Tried a different cable.

The Audio service crashing is much more annoying. It happens every 15 minutes. Everytime, I can restart the service like if nothing happened.

I tried to update drivers, disable / uninstall every listing in the Audio controllers (device manager). I have NVIDIA, Realtek and Logitec Webcam 500 High Definition Audio.

Audio service keeps crashing, no matter what.

Recently, I changed a monitor from 2560x1440 to 2048x1920 and the X51 updated to Windows 10. Next, without any hardware changes, the XPS 8700 updated to Windows 10.
Aurora R1 is running Windows 7.x
Aurora R3 is running WIndows 7.x
What MS OS can the Aurora R1 support (2560x1440 display, updated GPU)
What MS OS can the Aurora R3 support (2560x1440 display)
Can either move to Windows 8.1.x? Or both?
Can either or both move to Windows 10.x?
What is significantly different between Win 8.1.x Pro and Win 10 Pro?

Thanks gurus!

A:DELL ALIENWARE AURORA R1, R3, X51, and XPS 8700

First there is a free upgrade from Windows 7 OEM to Windows 10 Retail so there is absolutely zero point in purchasing a Windows 8.1 Retail license...
Windows 10 TH2 is essentially a fixed version of Windows 8.1 where Metro Apps work correctly as "Windows".
Almost any system shipped with Windows 7 can run Windows 10. As they are 2009 and 2011 models respectively Dell did not provide updated drivers for Windows 8.x or Windows 10 because they are all out of warranty. All the drivers should be inbuilt into Windows 10 TH2 or automatically obtained via Windows Update. Its advised to update your BIOS to the latest revision before proceeding.
A Clean Installation also in general performs better. See here for details:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-windows-10-oem-and-retail-iso/
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1RkaknDn7v-Ucth4gt0U3BHVSY7oNkWr
Both systems likely have a legacy (non-UEFI) BIOS so take that into account when making the Bootable USB. Although you may want to look at the BIOS settings for the 2011 model to see if there is UEFI support.

What follows is the text of the initial message that I posted at the Dell Desktop Forum regarding this problem:
Running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, Service Pack 1 on a Dell XPS 8700 Special Edition PC.  I am experiencing audio distortion/breakup & dropouts/skips when playing music from the computer through headphones or external speakers.  The problem occurs whether the source is iTunes, Windows Media or the optical drives.  The longer the listening time, the more frequent & severe the errors become.  When listening to ripped copies of the same music through an iPod connected directly to the audio system or headphones, no errors occur.  I have installed an ASUS Xonar U7 external sound card.  This seems to have improved the overall sound but it has not solved the distortion issue.  The relevant drivers appear to be up to date.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.
After a series of exchanges with Chris M, and performing actions suggested by him that included establishing that the Onboard Audio Controller was disabled & removal of the program REALTEK HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO DRIVER, Chris M's latest reply was:
I do not think that this is a computer hardware issue. The fact that both the Realtek and the 3rd party Xonar both have the issue points to the operating system resource allocation has the problem. You need to repost the issue on the Microsoft Operating System board to get their thoughts and opinions.

Before you go getting a new hard drive, I also had this issue. There are two versions of Win 7, one includes drivers and one doesn´t. Try this: go into your device manager and scan down to find your Audio then look to see if there are any big yellow questions marks. These will be missing or out of date drivers. Update or install these drivers then see how you go. Control panel> sound> test. Good luck.

This is going to sound stupid/crazy/dumb/etc...but tonight, for the first time, I noticed a flashing white light on the front panel of my Dell XPS 8700...the light is next to the "Mini/MMC SD/RS/SDXC' slot...doesn't appear to have anything to do with putting an SD in. The light is sporadic, sometimes quickly flashing and then nothing..other times multiple flashes. My computer appears to be working fine.
I have searched all over the Dell site and can't find anything...I know on my laptop I have a flashing light next to the battery light..I have always assumed that is the processing light.
I feel like this something I should know; I just want to make sure that it is a normal thing.

A:What do the flashing lights mean on the front of the Dell XPS 8700?

Hi Troyj1972
Thanks for writing to us.
Do you see a cylindrical icon beside the light, it indicates the hard drive.
Which means there is a continuous access of data on the system which is indicated by the hard drive activity light. Even if you haven open any programs the HD activity will still blink as the windows is using few backend programs , drivers etc.
The system is working normal, nothing to worry about.

A:Brand New Dell XPS 8700 - Multiple BSODs

I have debugged the dumps and all seem to have the same error, I have done some research about your crashes and have found some possible causes:

1.) Incorrect BIOS Configuration
2.) Faulty RAM Module

The Fixes for these are as follows:
1.) Restore the BIOS Configuration
-OR-
2.) Remove the faulty RAM.

Modifying BIOS/CMOS settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. I cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk. But it may be the only way to fix the BSOD's you are encountering.

If I was in your position I would try restoring the BIOS first, before trying to remove RAM. If you are ensure on how to restore the BIOS please look at this before trying: How can I reset CMOS or BIOS settings?

I wouldn't try the hard reset unless the normal defaults do not work. If neither work then try removing the RAM.

I currently own a Dell 8700 XPS.  I am running Windows 7 Home premium.  It has an i7-4790 and it won't turbo boost.  I have checked the settings to make sure it is enabled.  When I run AIDA64 Extreme, it ramps up to 3.59 but won't push past that.  The temperatures are all good, I believe the highest it gets is 72 degrees C on one core with and average of 68 degrees C for the the processor.  I only run the test for 10 minutes.  I recently updated the bios from the Dell Support page and it is running version A11.
I also downloaded and ran Intel's processor diagnostic and it passed.  Dell's CPU scan didn't detect any errors either.
Any suggestions?

Am seeing a problem I haven't seen before. When I put the ATI HD 5770 card in the Dell XPS 8700 and reboot the computer to install the driver, I see a black, blank screen, no video. I know that the system is booting from the sounds, but no video. I've tried using both DVI ports on the back of the card, booting in safe mode, but just not seeing any video.

The only thing that I can think of to try is uninstalling the previous card that's being replaced, Nvidia GT 720, and booting with the new card installed. But I'm not sure that'll help, I just don't understand why I'm not getting basic, legacy video when I reboot the computer with the HD 5770 installed.

I have two identical Dell XPS 8700 for my kids. They use mainly for steam games.

Both running the Windows 10 AU.

Today on one of them, by son said a message popped up and asked to stop a service and he clicked yes. Then all there was, was a gray screen and mouse pointer. He came and got me. The pointer would move but nothing else responded. So I did a power shut down. On reboot, the machine took around 40 seconds from seeing the dell logo to the sign on screen. This seemed very long. So I rebooted the other machine to see how long it takes, and it was only 3 seconds from the dell logo to the sign on screen.

I do not know if the long boot time has been going on or just started with this issue.

I ran sfc /scannow and it said no issues.

I remember in September 2015 ( a year ago) I had an issue with this machine where on power on, all I would get is the spinning dots at the Dell logo and it would not boot into windows. I even let it sit there for 24 hours and just spinning dots. I even tried new install of windows where the machine would let me install new windows, but after updates, the same thing happened with the spinning dots.

After a tons of troubleshooting, a dell tech recommended pulling the cmos battery. I did that and from then on it booted fine.

So since the long boot time did not seem right, I pulled the cmos battery again. waited 30 seconds, put it back in and booted into bios, change the clock (not sure if I had to but did), and then reboot and n... Read more

Six months ago, I installed Windows 10 from an update.  My computer had been using the 8.1 operating system.  For some reason, everything went haywire a couple of weeks ago, and I went to recovery and reset the computer to default factory settings.  It took quite a while for this to complete.

However, after I did this, I had several updates that had to be completed, and I did this.  Then the Windows 10 update logo appeared on the bottom of my screen, and I tried to update to Windows 10 from 8.1.

I am unable to do this now.  I get an error message that "We couldn't update the system reserved partitions."

When I contacted Windows Support, they said that sometimes after updating to Windows 10 and then refreshing, the next update wouldn't work well.

What can I do to get Windows 10 back on my computer.  I am so used to it, and I really like it.  I am old and cannot do really difficult tasks, but I can do some.

Thanks. for your help.

You have a high end CPU and 8GB of RAM. You should NOT be having slowness issues, tbh.

Have you checked that the HSF is free if dirt dust and debris? Have you checked the CPU temps while under load?

Open msconfig and post everything under the STARTUP tab.

Hello ?

Not sure if I am right at this place?

I bought a Dell XPS8700 desktop in late 2014. I started out with Win 8.0 Home. From the very beginning, I had BSOD crashes. I updated to Win 8.1 Home, Win 8.1 Pro and now to Win 10 Pro, hoping that the problem will disappear with a newer OS. However, I still have those crashes (very annoying when working on important documents!). My drivers are up to date and the computer is free of viruses etc.

As far as I have found, this problem might be related to the PCASp60 and/or NIDS6 driver/key. However, there is no PCASp60 driver on my computer (and apparently not needed based on various sources, which I either cannot confirm or not confirm). If I delete one or both keys in the registry, there are still crashes, though. The system error message is always the same:

?The PCASp60 NIDS Protocol Driver services failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.?.

I did some more research and found that these drivers seem to be related to the Realtek PCI onboard LAN unit. But even if I disable the LAN in the BIOS and delete all Realtek drivers in System/MyDevices, the error still exists and my computer crashes.

I am wondering if this is a general problem/unresolvable error of this computer or if it can be resolved..?

I am close to exchanging the motherboard or even switching back to HP computers (which always worked very well for me in the past 15 years).

Thanks in advance for any comments an... Read more

I bought a Dell XPS 8700 last Aug ('15) for $999 from Costco online. We had problems almost immediately with the PC not powering up (at all). but since it occasionally worked, we waited too long to actually return the PC to Costco (beyond 90 days). We also did not install the PC until Nov '15 because we bought 5 PC's at once and it took time to install them all.
We called tech support and after four hours of getting the run around and "trouble-shooting" via phone with Dell's non-English speaking tech support staff, they finally agreed to send out a technician. Technician replaced power supply and on/off button. We thought it was fixed but no. We didn't really call Dale back because we never had time to spend another three or four hours on the phone and schedule another technician just way too time-consuming for us to do that and run a business so instead we suffered a long barely using the computer and using other computers that were working fine instead.
Fast-forward the clock today May 30, 2016. The computer is still under warranty till August 2016 I call Dell and explain the situation, and that we've already unsuccessfully had a field technician trying to fix the problem and they were unable to do so. I respectfully ask that they send a replacement computer as we didn't have the time to spend another 2 1/2 days troubleshooting with their phone tech-support team, and also field technicians they declined, stating that I should've cal... I recently installed a SSD hard drive on my new Dell XPS8700 and installed a fresh copy of Windows 8 using the OS disc provided by dell. After completing hours worth of windows updates and driver updates, i go into bios and switch back to UEFI mode only to get a bios error when booting.

The error message that displays is:

No boot device available. Strike the f1 key to reboot, f2 to run the setup utility.
Sata 0: Installed
Sata 1: Installed
Sata 2: Installed
Sata 3: None
Sata 4: None
Msata: None

I booted into the Windows 8 OS Disc and formatted the second hard drive and about 3-4 partitions it had using the "repair disc" tools provided in the OS Installation options. Also formatted while in windows 8 as a simple drive in NTFS with a drive letter.

I found something else on the internet that mentions using bootrec.exe tool. I've tried the scanos, fixmbr, and fixboot options; even though it says it completed successfully, it did nothing whatsoever. The /scanos detects no installation.

I'm still getting the error and the only way around it is switching to legacy mode. Does anyone know a way to fix this issue without having to reinstall the OS in UEFI mode?

A:Issue loading in UEFI mode after setting up Windows 8 on SSD on Dell XPS 8700

I ended up reinstalling Windows 8 from the disc. Apparently with Dell, when booting off the OS disc in UEFI mode, the dell logo appears and it pretty much freezes there for a few minutes til it loads Windows 8 installation process. This, I accidentally found out after having to get off the computer right when the dell logo appeared on my screen after selecting option to load off boot disc. Figures. None of the dell techs told me it would take a few minutes either. Either ways, I'm going to run hardware tests afterwards to make sure there is nothing wrong with any of my parts after windows update is complete.

I can see from the forums that this issue is occurring often with many users. Thus far, I cannot see a fix, despite extensive reading on the subject, without recourse to a new graphics card and PSU. Is it not about time that Dell owned up to this and issued new cards or at least gave the information required to solve the problem? This was a high cost, high end purchase direct from Dell and I need a solution. Please help.

Thank you

A:Dell XPS 8700 with AMD Radeon R9 270 - random black screens and shut downs

*Which* 8700 system did you buy?
The system that you bought was *fine* for how it was delivered and "spec'ed" for.
The system that you bought was *not* designed to allow the user to do "any type of upgrade" they wanted.
For *most* XPS 8700 systems, an MD Radeon R9 270 is far past what the system was spec'ed for.
Dell offers *many* *options* in building systems. :-)

You can't get a "high-end" desktop, and expect it to be able to be used like a hard-core gaming or graphics workstation.
From what I saw, the MD Radeon R9 270 requires a "big" power supply.
www.realhardtechx.com/.../Page362.htm

www.tomshardware.com/.../power-supply-270-system.html

Since that advanced graphics card also generates a lot of heat, the *system* has to be designed to allow for that extra heat.

For the XPS 8900, Dell has their "extreme" series.
That's what's *required* for advanced graphics cards, *unless other mods are done to the system*.
For one, I strongly suggest a heat-sink upgrade along with a bigger power supply.

[on Soapbox] :)
Imho, if people want an gaming system, then Dell sells gaming systems. :-)
***If people want to upgrade a desktop, the it's 110% up to the user to do the required mods. And, realize that you loose your Dell warranty, and Dell support may not be able to help with any system problems. Dell support knows the systems that Dell sells. I have two identical Dell XPS 8700 for my kids. I got them around May 2015.  They use them mainly for steam games and Office 2016.Both running the Windows 10 AU.Today on one of them, by son said a message popped up and asked to stop a service and he clicked yes. I do not know if the long boot time has been going on or just started with this issue.I ran sfc /scannow and it said no issues.I remember in September 2015 ( a year ago) I had an issue with this machine where on power on, all I would get is the spinning dots at the Dell logo and it would not boot into windows. I even let it sit there for 24 hours and just spinning dots. I even tried new install of windows where the machine would let me install new windows, but after updates, the same thing happened with the spinning dots. After a tons of troubleshooting, a dell tech recommended pulling the cmos battery. I did that and from then on it booted fine.So since the long boot time did not seem right, I pulled the cmos battery again. waited 30 seconds, put it back in and booted into bios, change the clock (not sure if I had t... Before I updated my laptop to Windows 10 I created a factory recovery media with Dell Backup and Recovery as suggested by Dell.  The upgrade went very well, but now I am getting reminders from Dell to update my recovery media.  However, when I use Dell Backup and Recovery and click the Update Your Recovery Media option, it always says near the end of the update that an error occurred during the process.  What is the cause of this error?  Is it possible to create another factory recovery media using the same USB drive that I used to create the current one, i.e. overwrite the current recovery data with new data?  Thanks for any information.

I want to do a full original installation restore and restore the emails.

Just wanted to double check!!

Also: I've made a backup (of another PC).
I have a file size that is 9GB.
How can I store this onto DVD discs?
And how can I make the discs be bootable??
So that I can juts restore the whole system by booting from the DVD discs?

Thanks!

I periodically backup my data files which is on another hard drive than WIN7 OS so this backup is not a system image. Every time I do a backup I do a restore to a dummy partition to double check the backup was successful. Anyway, I recently tried to restore my backup from March 2014 & the backup utility is not recognizing the file. It recognizes other backups so something must be off with this particular file.

I checked & it appears all of the catalogs & zipped files are present. Is there another manner or 3rd party software I could restore this particular file? The file is just over 100 GB. I should add that I have transferred that file from one hard drive to another since last March, but transferring should not be a problem as far as I understand.

Appreciate any suggestions

Hi everyone,

I created an image using the Microsoft Backup and Restore tool in Windows 7. I saved the image on a network shared folder.

I then went to the Advanced Recovery Methods in Windows to restore my image...that I just created. It restarts the computer and goes into recovery mode, I point to where the image is located, I entered the network credentials and it give me an error.

"The Specified network resource or device is no longer available. (0x80070037)"

Please look at the attachments below.

Oh...I'm doing this in Windows Virtual PC.

Anyone knows what I'm missing?

Hi,

New to this forum. I am using Win7 Backup and Restore, along with a Seagate external drive for my backup needs. I backup every week, and have been using it for about 1 year. I see the backups happening each week, but I've never had the need to restore anything. For the first time, I've needed to find an old version of a file. I have read the many articles about how to use the Win7 Restore utility, but when I 'search for files' using this utility for the file I'm looking for, I don't see it in any of the backups (various dates over the past 3 months). Now I'm wondering what it's backing up. The backup drive has lots of data, so it's putting something in there ;-)

So, in summary, I go through all the restore steps, but can't find the file I'm looking for. Is there some secret to using this tool? Seems straight forward...

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

A:Windows7 Backup and Restore utility: I can't find the file to backup

I find this program invaluable - it will find everything on your comp in seconds.

Download Everything

Type in the name of the file or any part of it and if it's on your comp, it will tell you.

When the file come up, right click and "open path."

Hope this helps.

My laptop is currently running Windows 10 Anniversary Update and I have the Windows Disc from which I have installed this window but now I have installed bunch of Apps and installed Windows Updates. I want to backup all of my Apps, Settings and Updates. If I ever install Windows 10 again I just don't want to install all those updates and apps again (I might not even remember all of the apps I have now) so How can I create a backup now so in the future whenever I want I can just restore back to this point? Should I create a System Image or System Restore (Restore Point) or a Recovery Drive or Backup and Restore (Windows 7) ? I don't know which one is the right for me because I have never done any Backup, Restore or Recovery. Please Help.

Hi I've had the Dell XPS 8700 for over a year now and it's an excellent Desktop.
I've recently moved my tower to a new location and notice there is a solid orange light on all the time inside the PC, I believe it's on the motherboard... should I be worried this is on all the time? It's just I've never noticed it before.
Also on the back of the PC there is a solid green light, I'm guessing this is to just tell me the PC has Power.
I tried a google search but everyone with the orange light seems to have PC issues, my pc is working fine as far as I can tell.

A:Dell XPS 8700 Orange Light inside and Green Light on Back

LED on the motherboard will be on as long as the PC is plugged into a working outlet. It's perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.
If you unplug the PC from the wall and press/hold the power button for ~15 sec, that LED will go off. Again, perfectly normal...
Green LED says there's power to the PSU.

I've scanned with Microsoft Security Essentials, the only AV application I use, which produced nothing. Disabling MSSE does not help (I checked Task Manager, All users, and the MSSE process before attempting the backup and it was indeed stopped). I've also performed full scans with MalwareBytes, the paid version of Spybot S&D and SuperAntiSpyware, which produced no results. I don't let these additional malware applications run in real time. If the workaround doesn't help do you have a restore point from before this problem first appeared?

I'm running Windows 7 64x Home Premium on a Toshiba Qosmio X505 laptop. I just got it back from the warranty repair center, where they replaced the hard drive and graphics fan & heatsink, and reloaded the factory windows version. Before I sent it out for repair, I used Windows Backup to create a backup of all my files on a Toshiba casio 500GB external USB drive (I had over 300 GB of files, so it was easier to use Windows Backup than drag and drop all the files, at least at the time). Now that I have the laptop back, I'm having trouble restoring my files. When I go to Control Panel-> Backup & Restore, a message appears in the restore section, saying "Windows could not find a backup for this computer." I've tried reconnecting the drive as well as restarting my computer, but to no avail. I can see and explore the files in My Computer, so I know the hard drive is properly connected. I appreciate any help you can give.

Thanks,

Hi everybody,
I have an Inspiron 7548 4K with W10 (upgraded from 8.1) and since a few days I've been having the following problem with DBAR (1.9.X.X). When I try to take a SYSTEM back up, it ALWAYS stops/fails to complete at 12% during the Backing Up module (checking system and building list complete OK). The message is "Operation Cancelled. Destination location unavailable or not enough space on the disk". It always happens at 12% of the process. I have tried it more than 10 times, with no avail. Further info:
1. The only change in my system was a W10 update of March 23, 2016. NOTHING else. Up until then everything worked fine.
2. Tried with both the external HDD with previous/existing backups AND a new/clean one. Both are 500 GB for backing up the internal 256 GB, so there is more than enough drive space. Also tried different usb ports in case one was malfunctioning.
3. Recovery media backup works fine. The problem is when it tries to proceed with system backup. I don't take data backups since I use cloud.
4. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling DBAR, keeping it below latest version 1.9.2.8. Same result.
Anybody?
Thanks,
Michael

I accidentally closed a Google Chrome window with many tabs and for some reason I no longer have the "Reopen last closed window" option in Chrome (just reopen last closed tab).

So I went to restore the Chrome state from my tape backup, but for the first time since I started a tape rotation, Yosemite backup insisted on getting every single backup tape I ever used even though all required data was on a single tape, there didn't seem to be a way for it to make it understand all the data was on one tape. I think if I forced it to use just the correct tape, it restored to what seemed to be several weeks ago, even though a backup from the day before was on the tape.

I ended up restoring it from my second emergency backup that's done to a removable hard drive.

I clearly don't understand how to do the restore I want in Yosemite backup, any idea why it insisted on getting like 5 tapes when all data needed was on a single tape?

Thanks

My questions are on Windows 7 System Restore, Restore Points and Backups; specifically, potentially using a Backup as a Permanent Restore Point.

Here is the situation...

About a month ago, I did a complete Factory Restore on my HP desktop and returned it to it's factory condition. After removing the bloatware and performing all the necessary Windows Updates, the Factory Restore process went off without any issues.

Today, however, I needed to use System Restore due to an issue I was having with multiple monitors that I just couldn't figure out. So, I went into System Restore and found a "Date andTime" of a restore point that was right around the same time I did the Factory Restore. That Restore Point was also the oldest and since I knew it was a known & good restore point, I decided to use it. That restore point "Description" was labeled "System Image Restore Point" and the "Type" was labeled "Backup." (See Image)

I don't recall setting up or doing any backups although, between Windows Backup, Norton Backup and HP's Backup utilities some type of backup obviously happened. FYI, I hate having all those options, as I'd rather use native Windows tools. In any case, today, I used the System Restore using the System Image Restore Point labeled as Backup and, after performing a few minor Windows Updates, everything went off without a hitch and my monitor problem was solved.

I have taken a full (Image ?) backup of both my laptops to an external expansion drive.

I am now trying to recover some files and folders from one of the backups.

I have some folders in the C:\ root directory and some in the C:\users\fred\applications folder.

I cannot get the restore program to select the folder in the C:\ root, and whilst I can search for the folder called Applications in the C:\users\fred the restore program will not show all the folders under the user fred when browsing.

I've tried the search, browse, folders and files etc. but Micrsoft apear to assume that all users will only use the half dozen standard document music, video folders.

Does any body know how I can make Microsoft Windows 7 restore show all the folders when browsing?

I have read the help before posting this issue.

Hi:

I have a Win 7 Enterprise Pro x64 laptop. Most of the files in my recycler/recycle bin mysteriously disappeared a few days back (I am guessing some OS quirk since desktop.ini also seems to have been modified then, though everything is still running smoothly).

So I want to get those files back. In my weekly backup to an external HDD using Win 7's built-in Backup and Restore I thought I have the recycler backed up:
Control Panel > Backup and Restore > Options > Change Backup Settings > Select where you want to save your backup > Where do you want to back up?: Let me choose > What do you want to back up?: Computer, Local Disk (C:, $RecycleBin is checked (my HD is partitioned and I also have the D: $RecycleBin selected here)

But when I select
Control Panel > Backup and Restore > Restore my files > Browse for files (or Browse for folders)
I get a explorer like screen which lists in the title bar,
Backup on <location> > Backup of C:
and lists all other folders I checked off in the Backup in the last paragraph but not the $RecycleBin folder.

Note that I have "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" selected and "Hide protected operating system files" unchecked in folder options (so for example ProgramData is listed in the folders in the last paragraph). I also am able to restore other files from my backup so I am rather sure the backup is not corrupted.

Is there someway to find and restore the recycler files or is this... Read more

Regrettably I learned too late that Dell Backup & Recovery 'might' encounter problems in Windows 10 if a user did not update 'DBaR' version 1.7 before an upgrade from Win 8.1 to Win 10. I have a Dell Inspiron 3647.
When I only select a few files to backup (e.g., pics, docs, printer software and a few apps) it would backup to my 32 GB USB flash error free.
But when I try a significant back up -- e.g., 8 GBs -- I get a display after 20 minutes, or so, that the backup created an error. [head scratch]
Even something less challenging for DBaR like running a Factory Recovery Media backup resulted in the same error. Yet using the Windows 10 Control Panel Recovery app completed a backup error free.
I tried more than one USB flash, I ran Dell Update, defragged my hard drive, disabled firewall and AV protection. Nothing seemed to help.
Am I correct to assume that Dell Backup & Recovery 'might' encounter problems in Windows 10?
Sure would be nice to at least backup costly apps like Microsoft Office.

I curently don't use Dell Backup and Recovery, and I don't run any Dell startup items or automatic services. I also don't have the Recovery Partition in my current deployment. Because the partition is missing, Dell Bu & Rec takes a while to start if I click on the tile. When it does start, it offers to rebuild my recovery environment. It looks like in the System Backup settings, I see under more options the following: Instant Restore status (currently turned to on) and statuses for Overlay Icon and Context Menu.

Because I don't run startups or automatic services, and because my Recovery Partition is missing, I wonder if it will do anything at all to turn off Instant Restore, Overlay Icon, and Context Menu. I don't like launching Sys Bu & Rec, but will do so if you think that turning off Instant Restore, Overlay Icon, and Context Menu will shut off additional features.

Hi everyone, I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 OS on my HP Pavilion p6330f desktop PC. Prior to installing the new Windows 8.1 tower, I copied and saved to DVD+R disks my documents, pictures, videos, etc. from Windows 7 OS. Then I tried to install them into my new Windows 8.1 OS only to discover that this new animal does not have backup and restore on Control Panel or anywhere on the Start screen. I hesitate at simply loading them up like DVDs and opening them. All I can find out is that I can use Windows Easy Transfer if I have either an external hard drive or USB port gadgets. I have neither but some of what I have saved to disks is Windows 7 Easy Transfer files and folders. So can anyone tell me how to accomplish this minor miracle w/o losing everything I have saved from my Windows 7 hard drive? Thanks a lot and have a nice Hall-o-we'en season. Hope to hear from someone soon- keimanzero

I have been using Acronis Rescue disk to make images of my system. It works fine, but is a pain because I have open up the case and disconnect my secondary hard drive and change from my wireless mouse to a wired mouse. So I decided to try to the built-in Backup and Restore in Win 7 Pro and backup to an external hard drive.

In preparation for backing up my system partition, I do the following:
Clean all cookies, internet files and History.
Remove all restore points except the last one.
Run Malwarebytes
Run MSE version 2
Run Ccleaner (not messing with registry)
Run Smart Defrag (lastest version)
I then reboot and hook up the external hard drive

I then go into the Control Panel and select Backup and Restore. I set where I want the image to be created and start the backup. Everything looks normal for a while.

After about 4-5 minutes, NSE shows the below:

This is the only time NSE ever detects this and it detects it every time I try to backup. I have had NSE remove it or leave it alone. It does not matter.

Eventually I get the notice that the backup did not complete sucessfully.

I check the Events log and got this:

I have been through this several times and it occurs this way every time.

I would like some help solving this issue. Any help would be be greatly appreciated.

Use the "Windows Easy Transfer" utility. Will restore each of your "User" accounts with all settings. Simple, quick.

When I install the new OS, I create the first "User" account "Admin" and then only use the account for maintenance. When the OS has finished the install, I load all the programs I use. Then the "Easy Transfer Wizard" restores the other user accounts from the previous OS.

I am trying to restore using two CD's I made in backup and restore center - one was a continuation of the other.
I have the disc in the drive, and I click 'restore files'
It tells me the disk containing the backup is unavailable. I do not see an option to change where the computer looks for the backup.

Viewing the files on disc one did not give me anything usable.

Googling has showed me several different ways to backup, but very little about how to restore (aside from 'click the button and follow the instructions'.)

Any advice?

Hi all!

I have xpprosp2 and an inaccessible backup file of 30 Gb. A while ago I performed my first ever backup using the xp backup utility. I thought I followed the instructions, but something screwed up.

My problem is the restoration wizard (backup utility) will not restore or give access to the library of the backup.bkf files, which it displays as a cd.

It says under the backup identification label: "No entries found". I recall that the backup utility, after backing up, asked for a floppy disk or something and as my computer does not carry any floppy drives, I skipped this step, which might have been a big mistake.

So now I have this 30 Gb file on my harddrive, which I cannot access at all.

Could someone illuminate this situation and in particular how to access the data in this file?

Thank you for sharing and a possible solution to this problem.

In Windows XP I used to backup to Sony AIT 35 GB tapes and had a "Daily Backup" tape and a "Weekly Backup" tape which I backed up to every saturday so if ever the Daily backup had a problem the worst is that I'd loose a week of data. So I left the Daily backup tape in all the time and when the scheduled weekly backup started on Saturday it asked me to insert the Weekly Backup tape.

Now that Windows 7 doesn't support tape drives I got 2 removable hard drives which I labelled Daily Backup and Weekly Backup. I set a schedule to run Daily backup each day but when I tried to make a manual backup on the Weekly Backup drive it refused insisted on getting the "Daily Backup" drive and so I had to reconfigure it to backup to Weekly Backup and then set it again to Daily Backup.

Is there not a way to have more than one backup job and schedule in Windows 7 so I can backup to multiple drives without reconfiguring the entire backup each time?

Thanks

My hard disk was recently re-imaged as part of a laptop repair. I had backed up my files using Windoes Live OneCare. I then did a restore using Windows Live OneCare. I then tried to Import the restored Mail file, it seemed to work, but when I looked, my old messages were not there. The Imported file structure was there, but no messages. Can any one help me restore my old messages?

Thanks

OK, so a couple of days ago, my HP desktop crashed and then went through the whole System Recovery loop(I couldn't login to Safe mode, wouldn't let me past the System Recovery Screen). Well I backed up the entire C drive using Backup your files in the menu. Then it shows you all the file types it will back up; i.e photos, videos, e-mails and bookmarks. So I did that to an external hard drive and it comes out to 143GB.

Then I did a factory restore to my desktop.

Now comes my problem. I've been able to copy everything from the external hard drive using RecoveryMgr.exe which opens the WIM files and saves them to my C: hard drive under System Recovery Files. However it does not seem to work when it comes to putting in my old Thunderbird e-mails, contacts and such or in Firefox to restore my bookmarks, saved passwords. Any help would be most appreciative. Thank you

A:System Backup & Restore will not restore bookmarks or e-mails

A default Firefox installation has all configuration info including bookmarks in C:\Users\your user name\appdata\roaming\ in a folder called Mozilla.

A default Thunderbird installation has all configuration info including email in C:\Users\your user name\appdata\roaming\ in a folder called Thunderbird.

If those folders got backed up, you should be able to drill down to them and restore.

I assume you used Windows Backup to do the back up. I have no idea if it will include those folders.

If those folders from your original installation still survive, you can restore by copying them to the same location on new Thunderbird/Firefox installations, over-writing the new folders created when you reinstall Thunderbird/Firefox.

It's a good practice to back up the Mozilla and Thunderbird folders periodically as a matter of course--just as you would any other data.

After doing a restore I lost some important emails. Is there any way to get them back? Can I restore my computer to an even earlier time? I did this, I thought it was an earlier time, but it may not have been. It may have been the same restore point in fact.

If I restored my computer to an even earlier time would this restore the emails I lost?

If not is there any other way to get the emails? My backup drive is my E: drive and I tried getting the emails from there, but you know how microsoft outlook is , i just don't know how to do it. Is there anything I can do?

Maybe a system restore? I haven't tried that, although it's been a little while, I'd hate to lose something else :(. It would be worth it though to get the emails back.

Thanks a lot.
Brad

A:Did a restore (using backup and restore) and lost important emails

you should be able to reverse the restore if its what cause the lost of emails. However, normally your emails are safe during a restore.

you could also do a search and see if it finds your pst files. see this for more info
