How to replace hard disk in Toshiba NB100

Can anyone help me ?

I believe the HDD is under the top cover which is hard to get to.

You should get a Service Center to do it for you, so nothing gets damaged and your warranty stays valid.

I have seen other posts on this but no definitive answer.
My HDD is dying and needs replacing. I see the posotion of the HDD is LHS under the palm rest and there appears to be a removable flap - other posts say there is just one screw to remove but there are no visible screws under the machine.

I have changed HDDs on other Toshibas with absolutetly no problem - anyone any ideas?

A:Hard disk replacement A100

The HDD replacement on this notebook is not simply procedure. I am not 100 % sure but the whole Palm rest/Touch pad must be removed at first. HDD cover is fixed with one screw but you will see him just if the Palm rest is removed.

When this screw is removed Hold the HDD tab and pull out the HDD assembly. Next step is to detach the HDD bracket from the HDD.
The unit is pretty new and before you do anything checks if the warranty is still valid.

We need to recover the hard disk as an ex-employee has deleted some files within the OS.
We don't want to reinstall Windows as it my effect some of the other files he has deleted, by accident!!!!
We have the software to recover the data but need to gain access to the Hard Disk and remove it, then run it on our test machine.

Does anyone have any idea how to remove the hard disk?

A:A100 Hard Disk Replacement

you find the HDD when you turn the A100 at the right side! You have to remove only one screw and take the small HDD flap away! Then you can pull out the HDD!

I bought this computer new several years ago and the hard-drive died today.  I went out and bought a new internal hard-drive, but I did not realize that I also needed to install an operating system with the new hard-drive.  So, I am trying to see what I need to do to get my new hard-drive to boot up?  I do not have the recovery disk that came with my computer.  I was told that maybe HP could send a new Operating System disk so that I could reinstall windows.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thank you

Hi all,

I need to replace my hard disk (Toshiba 40GB) and the configuration of my laptop E-SYstem 3089 is the following:

quite scary to be honest: there is a sort of armor protecting the hard disk and I don't know how to get it out... do I need to dismount all the pieces?
So please if someone experienced of this EI-Systems can share a tip, I'd be very happy and grateful. Thanks in advance!!

My laptop hp 15-n029sg was showing the imminent hard drive failure message. I have checked the hard drives through "Check Now" options. Every time I scan some problem is found and I fix it accordingly. But then again it shows some problems are found when scanned again. Is there any way I can find out where the problem is gone or not? Eventually I guess I have to replace the hard drive. Can anyone suggest the proper i.e compatable hard drive for my laptop?

A:Replacement of Imminent Failing Hard disk

Hi, The drive on the link below is an example of one that would be fine for your notebook.  1Tb Notebook Hard Drive. The procedure to replace the Hard Drive starts on Page 77 of your Maintenance & Service Guide. Once done, simply use your Recovery Media to reinstall the Operating System on the new drive - this procedure is detailed in the following HP document. If you don't have your Recovery Media, see if you can order a replacement set using the link below. Order HP Recovery Media.  If you have any problem with this link, try ordering this directly from HP. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-K

A:g570 hard disk drive replacement

hi dcnyr,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Were you able to Create a Recovery Disc from the old HDD when it was still working? or you have an RCD when you first got the unit?
Because if you have, you don't have to worry about any partition or procedure just pop the First RCD and just follow the Prompt,
but If you were not able to create set of Recovery CD then,
First you can contact Lenovo To Purchase a recovery CD
and another option is this:
"There's a big possibility that you're able to activate Windows 7 64bit using that COA,
Try to:
1. Create a recovery disc (just in case something goes wrong, you can revert back the preloaded OS)
2. Download and install Belarc Advisor to extract the Windows 7 product key on the BIOS.
3. Download a Windows 7 ISO and burn it using imgburn. Check here how
4. Install Windows 7 using this guide (use the key that you obtained from Step 2 if necessary)."
Hope this helps,

Any 2.5 inch wide and 9.5 mm thick SATA laptop hard drive will work and they do make 1 and 2 TB models so those are fine. It can be SATA III but will only work at a lower SATA speed on your laptop. Post back if you need any more help.

Hi - Yesterday, my Averatec 3250 laptop stopped working and now I cannot boot it up. I am getting a "SMART command failed" and subsequent message about disk read error. It sure sounds like the hard drive is shot. This machine gets light use, so this is very disappointing as I bought it new in late 2004. I was thinking about replacing the hard drive, but there is no information in the user manual. Any advice appreciated.

I suspect that my 640 GB hard disk (from 2008) is nearing the end of its life and would like to plan for a replacement. There does not appear to be much if any chance to replace such a SCSI disk any more. What is the best type of disk to replace it, and does it need a new controller?I run Vista (original OS) and Windows 7 (new) in a dual boot configuration. It has currently three volumes, a Vista C: drive (c.300 GB), a Windows 7 C: drive (c.300 GB) and the HP "FACTORY_IMAGE" drive 15 GB

A:Invalid Product Key, when activating after a hard disk replacement

The serial used is the OEM SLP key, that is the key the computer was installed with when it left the Toshiba factory. To use that key you have to use the Toshiba recovery disks to reinstall.
If you do a clean install from any other Windows 7 DVD you have to use the serial that is on the case of the computer/laptop.
You could try and call MS support and explain your problem. You might need to call several times as some of the support guys are less friendly than others.....

My company's computer needs to be patitioned and reformat. The system is still working well. I mean, nothing wrong with anything (weird huh?). Ok the hard disk just need to be 'split'. I mean, make drive C & D on the hard disk. I know how to do that... easy... Then the HD need to be formatted & reinstall windows XP. Ok, easy too..

But the main problem occured before I do anything (partition & format). I have my own bootable CD that I usually use for partitioning & formatting.

Ok, i insert the CD & restart.
I went to BIOS & changed the boot order (1st boot: CD-ROM, 2nd: HDD-0 & 3rd: Floppy). Then restart again.
Ok the bootable CD is excellently loaded.
I typed fdisk, then came the first problem. it says something like 'no fixed disk'. I exit fdisk.
Then I typed format c:, 2nd problem occured. it says something like, 'invalid drive'.
I forgot the error message because the pc is in my office right now. I'm currently at home 'begging for help' So the error message is not accurate. sorry..

I think, if I run the CD, the hard disk will not be loaded (or should I say, hard disk failure). & If I take off the CD & restart again, change the BIOS (1st boot: HDD-0) then windows will load! Weird right?

I don't think my CD is 'corrupted' nor broken because I tried to run the CD from another PC. Yes, I can access the C drive from that PC.

Does anyone have any idea of the ... Read more

A:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

My NB100 will not power up, on pressing the start button the battery and power lights come on and stay on as does the fan. However the hard drive light only comes on for a couple of seconds and then goes off. the machine then just sits in that state and doesn't even get to the Toshiba splash screen stage. In this situation I don't even know if it is possible to get into set etc.

Please help!!!

The NB 100 has 2 usb ports on its right side. I tried plugging in an external cd drive and got a red flagged box from the bottom task bar stating something about device drawing too much power and that the supply would be stopped.
Since then the usb ports 'appear' dead. Nothing I plug in is recognised by the NB100.

It does say in the user manual that if an overload is detected the power to usb ports can be stopped. However, it does not say how to reset the ports ie power to them.

Both the card reader and usb port on the front left are still working.

I have tried updating BIOS to the latest 2.10, setting all bios settings to default using F2 at bootup and have even bought 'Device Driver' to ensure all drivers are up to date.

Can anyone help??? I'm sure there is a simple answer but just can't see it.

Ideally I would like to avoid having to reinstall XP as I don't have the disk and the hard drive doesn't appear to have an XP partition.

A:NB100 no usb power - how to reset

In your case I would recommend removing the USB port /controller /hub from device manager.
Just simply go to device manager, expand the USB controller area and delete all the devices which are available in this area.

After new reboot, the system (Win XP in your case) should recognize the USB ports and the driver should be installed again.
Then reboot once again connect an USB device and check if this helps?

Just for info: the USB 2.0 ports provide 500mA? so in some cases the external USB device would not be detected when such device would need more than the usual 500mA. In such case such device should be connected to two USB ports using an Y USB cable or should use an external power source as some USB hubs do.

Hi, just got hold of a NB100 netbook, apart from the keyboard being TINY! am having problems getting key presses to register, if you stab the keys down they work, however normally touch typing intermittantly registers.

over 4 people have tried in the office today and all have had the same issue with keys not registering. if you lightly press the key and feel when the button is depressed over and over it randomly misses!

Ive search these forums and nobody has had any issues, could it just be faulty?

- Shut down, unplug AC & Battery, then hold down the power button for 30 seconds.
- Uninstalled the "Microsoft acpi-compliant control" method
- and now have waited till the battery has drained 0% hopeing to do a discharge cycle recharge.

still not setected tho.

im running windows 10 by the way.

could it just be a case of dont bother with aftermarket batteries?????

A:NB100 battery issues

It could be possible that this "new" battery does not work properly… maybe it’s not fully compatible or… or… or…

In my opinion there must be some reason why such batteries are much cheaper than a genuine batteries provided by notebook manufacturers…

so from my point of few, the battery malfunction should be considered in this case.

My son brought the family's NB100 back from a trip to India with some keyboard damage (apparently water damage).

Most of the (few) dead keys I can re-assign or work-around, but the blue "Fn" key (lowest row, second from left, between Ctrl and the Win key) is proving difficult.

My first thought: how can the various "applets" controlled by the Fn key (esp. + F9/F10 for screen brightness!) be run from the command line? It must be possible, but although I see a pile of Tosh .dll files in /WINDOWS/system32/Tos*.dll, I don't know whether that's them, or how to run them if it is.

If there are any other suggestions, I would be glad to hear them. It's quite frustrating to have only one means (apparently) of accessing these Fn-controlled helper apps, so I hope there is some "backdoor" available.

A:NB100 dead Fn key - how to access applets?

Try this: open start > all programs > Toshiba >Tools and Utilities > Flash cards settings.
The first option there is ?Allow the mouse to bring up the cards?. Activate it and move mouse pointer to the top of the screen. When the flash cards are shown you can use it on the same way as using FN button.

I have an Asus laptop running windows 7 64 bit and this laptop came with 2 hard drives, each partitioned into two parts (C:\ & D:\ and E:\ & F:\).
I am transferring over 30GB of data from one drive (C:\) to the other (F:\)
Get this... the transfer rate is 1.2MB/s right now. Over 9 hours left to copy the 30GB. There are over 125,000 items but that still does not justify the 1.2MB/s
I am open to any suggestions but first, a few points.
Yes, I am sure they are two separate drives with those partitions.
Error checking showed zero errors on both drives.
This is the 3rd time I am trying a transfer.
Both drives are relatively empty (especially the F:\).
C:\ is my system disk.
The SMART data shows no read/write errors or overheating.
I have disabled the virus protection and all real-time scanning.
Again, I am very open to suggestions and checks. Feel free to post your idea!
Thanks in advance!

A:Laptop Hard Disk to Hard Disk transfer Extremely Slow

My experience with file transfers of the type you that the number of files doesn't matter...what matters is how large the files are.  Video files take much longer than text or document files.
Slow transfer rates between partitions/drives...can indicate a problem with either the partititon or the drive, IMO.

Windows XP sp2 wont boot from hard disk.

After much to do turns out my computer doesnt recognise the hard disk.

I have a seagate 500Gb SATA hard drive, its about a year old, the computer doesnt get hot in the slightest and it shouldnt be dead. I checked the wiring, as far as i can see, its all fine.

only conclusion i come to is that my hard disk is kaput which it shouldnt be. Can anyone give me any other possible solutions to try out before i cry and/or spend money on a new one? theres a lot of data on it i dont want to lose.

If not, ill plug it in to another computer to check, i havent done that yet because it will take me hours - i can only unscrew the hard drive from one side without rearranging the room.

A:Hard disk boot failure -> computer won't recognise hard disk

Is your Seagate the 7200.11 series?

We've been seeing a lot of harddrive issues layely that has nothing to do with the drive itself but bad SATA cables aas the cause. Do you have another one you can switch out?

When you say the computer doesn't recognize it we're talking the BIOS here, correct?

Another suggestion is what you have already suggested but I would "slave" it in antother system and see if you can access it that way.

Hi guys,

I will try to explain this as simple as i can.So let's start
I have laptop ASUS N75SF and it is a year old,so i have decided to format.I have two separate hard disks that are the same brand,SeaGate 9500423 AS, each 500 gb capacity. Before i decided to format , one of my hard disks(that is my partition D) started to make strange noises and it was not recognized, but i was using my laptop without problems because my windows was installed on my other hard disk (that is my partition C).So now my question is this :
After i formatted them both i have no clue which one is which ? they are like :
Disk 0 Partition 1 465 gb
Disk 1 Partition 2 465 gb
So how do i choose the one that is better and not having problems to pust my winodows on?
I know that i can buy new one and replace it with the one that is having problems, but right now i have no money to do that .I am student

Thanks in advance

I lost sticker with license number Windows XP to Toshiba NB100. I have an invoice.
How can I retrieve licence number?

Authorized service refused to support this topic.

A:No sticker with license number Windows XP to Toshiba NB100

You cannot retrieve the licence number.
First of all the sticker on the bottom of the unit was an OEM serial key. Such key cannot be used and would not work in connection with fresh installed Win XP system.

The point is that Toshiba image which was preinstalled on this notebook was already activated and this means that such key was useless.

I assume you did not create a Toshiba Recovery disk (or flash USB stick) in the past? Right?
Such disks would reinstall the Toshiba image containing activated Win XP system.

Well, usually it?s possible to order such disk [here|] but I think this would not be possible anymore because of the notebook age.

Solution: you would need to purchase the Win XP with valid serial key.

I am having this Hard Disk problem. My old Hard Disk (Samasung 500GB) (bought in 2010) started showing signs of corruption (like Windows doing chkdsk at every boot, and data getting lost). So I bought a NEW Hard Disk (Western Digital 1TB) last month (Sep 2016) to backup all the data from old one. I didn't have time to backup but wanted to use PC so I Clean Installed Windows 7 64bit on the New Western Digital 1TB and used it about a month without any problems.
A couple of days ago i decided to backup up the data. I reformatted the New Western Digital 1TB with Gparted and did a clean Windows 7 Install again. I connected the old Samsung 500GB to the motherboard and started copying the files to the new Western Digital 1TB.
Suddenly Windows showed me an error "Windows detected a hard disk problem" which makes sense because the Samsung 500GB is old and might be failing BUT the error is showing both of my Hard disk in the dialog box.
Is my new hard disk corrupt as well?
Why is Windows showing my new hard disk as failing?
Can Windows mistakenly show both hard disk in error?
Please help i am confused. sorry for a confusing question. i will answer anything required.
I have taken the screenshot of the error message, they are in attached files.
1)The 1st Screenshot shows both my Hard disk in the error box (OLD Samsung and NEW Western Digital WD)
2)The 2nd Screenshot shows only one of my Hard disk and its the new one (Western digital WD)

What do you mean fixed into an enclosure to work like an external drive? Are you referring to a My Book 3.0 VIA USB 3.0.... vs.... an internal SATA III SSD or HDD? Be a little more specific.

I will try to keep this as brief as possible and yet give you wise and wonderful tech persons all the information you need to help me out. I am intelligent, but NOT a super-user.

I have an e-machines desktop computer. It is old. A Cyrix MII 266 processor with upgraded memory. I have a 10gb Maxtor hard drive which is the issue at hand. I am running Win2000. My home computer (the e-machine desktop) is networked through a router with my printer and my business laptop.

The problem: Win2000 loads and boots. It LOOKS like it's functioning properly. However, it cannot read any of the files on the disk. When I try, it tells me C: is inaccessible. I can't search, explore, etc. The files are "non-existent."

I managed to get Windows to create a backup of it and saved that file to my Laptop. I can only "assume" that it actually backed up ALL the files on the drive so they are safe.

One really ODD thing you should know is that I cannot get into the BIOS. When it boots and usually gives you that second or two to hit [F2] and enter setup ... doesn't do that any more. I sit and hold the F2 key. Nope. I've second-guessed myself and tried the ESC key and the F1 key. I've tried it with and without the CTRL key. Nothing. So I can't even tell the silly thing to boot from the CD instead, load onto my D: backup drive and then kill the C: drive. It's like it's possessed.

Things I've already tried (not necessarily in this order):

I have a HP Ency Phoenix -810-160 that had a dead HD. I got a good deal on a SSD and thus replaced the drive. When I attempted to run the recovery disks, I ran into the issue that I kept getting a Hard Drisk Error blue screen at start up.  I found it odd so I took the drive and tested it on another computer. No issue. I've now been able to install windows 8.1 back on it and even upgraded it to Windows 10 before the deadline but I still get the blue sceen error.  All tests pass for both memory and the hard disk. System also runs fine with the exception that when I start up the computer there is a massive delay, then I get the Hard Disk Error, If I just F2 kit and then close and continue, the system finishes to start up.  I think I may be having a firmware issue but HP Assist is installed and all updates are suposed to be running.  Anyone outthere running into a similar issue? I feel like I'm having a false positive since I went up to a Solid State Drive.

How much capacity, in GB, does the SSD have? Less than 256GB is unlikely to work with the recovery media.

Hi fellas, this is my first post here and I hope one of you can sort me out.

I've basically just replaced the HDD in my Dell Inspiron 17R Laptop. that was the easy part. Now I have to get Windows working again, without a backup CD or USB and using an OEM product key.

I've done some research and as far as I can tell its not possible for me to use someone else's computer to create one of these, and I have no access to someone elses copy of win so I'm thinking of downloading windows 7 as a free trial of some sorts or a digital river copy thats still available for download, use this as a temporary OS until the Boot disks arrive from Dell (ordered yesterday and will take up to 30 days to arrive).

Am I right in thinking that this i the best way to go? And can I make a USB flash using a Mac? It's the only laptop I have available to me at the moment.

Many thanks and much appreciated!

A:Hard Drive Replacement for PC

You would be better off getting one HDD to put in your computer and an external one for your backups (actually two external HDDs for backups would be much better since even a backup HDD can fail without warning but only one is better than none). The external HDDs should be connected to your computer only when updating the backups; they should not be permanently connected.

Using an internal HDD for backups is a bad idea because the same thing that can cause data to be lost on the main drive can also take out the data on an internal backup drive.

If you can swing it, I prefer using the Western Digital (WD) Blacks for internal drives. WD has a better reputation than Seagate for drive reliability and customer service. I've had only six Seagates; two died within a year and a third, a SSHD, was a disappointment performancewise. Of the 23 WD drives I've had, only two have failed; one other one arrived DOA (which could have been caused by rough handling in shipment), which the vendor promptly replaced and now is humming away in my machine happy as a kitten under a leaky cow.

If you are going to run your OS and programs on a HDD, I wouldn't get a third one; you can just put them on a partition on your one internal HDD separate from a data partition. The only way I would recommend a separate drive for the OS and programs is if you were going to upgrade to an SSD. An SSD will give you lightning fast boot times and program access and is an upgrade that will give you more bang for y... Read more

thanks for your help

A:Hard drive replacement

Yours is a standard PATA drive using a standard 44-conductor PATA connector. It is a given the system will handle a drive as large as 137 Gigabytes; but, it may go even higher depending on whether your board and OS supports 48-bit addressing.

Just be sure you get Parallel ATA (PATA) as opposed to Serial ATA (SATA). The connectors are very different. You'll need a drive with a 2.5-inch form factor.

As you shop, pay attention to the fact that you can usually get a drive with a three-year warranty for just a very few dollars more than the cheapest on in the list. Example: This drive for $55 carries a one-year warranty while this one for $60 carries three and this one for $60 carries five years.

Sometimes the warranty periods aren't listed on the dealer's web site and you have to get that information on the manufacturer's site. All Western Digital Scorpio drives carry a three-year warranty while Seagate's Momentus drives carry five years. Most drives carry only one year so if you shop smartly and pay just a very few extra bucks, you get a far better warranty.

Another consideration: I would be careful about getting fooled into buying an extended warranty on a hard disk from a dealer. I have a lot of first-hand experience that the replacement procedure from Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor, Toshiba and Hitachi and they are all fast and relatively trouble-fre... Read more

If you are running win98 you shouldn't have a problem with any size hard drive, other than that you will just need to make sure you get a IDE interface HD. For Physical size generall you will just have a 3 1/2 drive that should fit. However sometime Compaq uses 5 1/4 drives for there newer ones. Just take a look inside the case for the physical size.

I want to replace the 2.75" hard drive in an old IBM Thinkpad laptop. The replacement drive, however, is thinner than the original so there is a problem aligning the pins with the holes in the drive bay connector.

Has anyone had this problem? Exact pin alignment is critical. Is there a commercially available adapter shim that will solve the problem or should I try to make one?

A:Hard drive replacement

By any chance, does your old HDD have a metal casing?
If so, remove that case and put the new HDD in it.
It is highly unlikely that a newer drive would be thinner than the old.

I have actually never done a hard drive swap and a full restore. I was wondering if you all could help me out heres what i want to do.

I have a full entire backup of all files on my computer. (took like 6 hours to backup)
I want to take the 2 tb hard drive ive purchased and hook it up by sata and remove the old hard drive then restore my computer back to as if it were exactly the same without anything changing.
1. )do i have to backup my registry in a different way than windows 7 backup utility.
2. )will i lose any data throughout the process and will all applications including games and everything on the drive function correctly?
*note i am not changing any other hardware in the machine just simply swapping the hard drives.*

thanks, let me know what i need to do to make this happen

A:Hard drive replacement

You say you have a "full entire backup".

What do you mean?

An image of your C partition?

A file by file backup of all files on the C partition?

Something else?

You don't have to separately backup the registry.

What application are you using to make this "full entire backup"??

Whether you will lose data or need to reinstall applications depends on exactly what you are doing and we don't have enough info at this point.

Adding a new boot drive on my father's computer. Used the Maxblast software that came with the Maxtor 120 G. Everything worked fine except I noticed that the software had partitioned the drive into four equal sections--the same situation that had caused the need for a larger drive because the sections not located int he boot partition were not easily available. So I reformatted the drive into only one partition but then the copying from the original boot drive could not be completed (many attempts). So I partitioned it back into several partitions, everything copied as intended, but now it asks for some command something or other at C prompt. Will not boot windows 98.
I've tried reinstalling O/S, recopying original boot drive--nothing works. Somebody help me please.

A:Which replacement hard drive ?

Here is the Service Manual: Manual Supports 6.35 cm (2.5 in) hard drives in 9.5 mm (.37 in) and 7.0 mm (.28 in) thicknesses (all hard drives use the same bracket) So that confirms it will accept the one I linked in the post above.  Unfortunately, hard drive removal is a bit tricky. Start on p. 85 of the manual which shows how to remove the top cover.  You can skip over the part about removing the screen and jump to p. 105 for the hard drive.  This series of pictures will also likely help: If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

I want to replace my hard drive. It is a Toshiba 80GB, HDD2D32, MK8032GSX.

I was hoping to find one on a big site like Amazon or maybe even Toshiba. No joy.

I have found them for sale on small sites that I've never heard of and I'm not sure what I will be 'new' really new or some sort of salvaged part.

Question: Is there any websites that give a substitute drive of known quality, eg: Seagate?
I'm assuming that if the physical size and connector pin layout is correct then I should be able to use any manfacturer?

A:Hard Drive Replacement or are good places to start. I think that drive is a SATA drive for a laptop, so you'll need a 2.5" laptop SATA drive.

If you need to clone your existing drive to the new drive, you will also need a USB to SATA cable to clone the data. Or if you have a desktop with available SATA ports, you can clone the drive from the desktop.

Otherwise you can do a fresh install with you notebook install discs.

I have a 40gb hard drive that has the OS on it. I am close to maxing it out and want to replace it with an 80gb hard drive. Is there a way to copy or clone the drive so I do not have to re-install everything? I have an external hookup to connect the SATA drive.

Thank you.

I want to replace the SATA HDD in my Dell Dimension 4700 with a larger SATA drive, but I don't want to start from scratch because I only have the Dell restoration WinXP Prof CD, not the retail version. Is there a way I can "clone" the present drive? What hardware and software would I need? I once did this with Maxtor IDE drives, using Maxblast. But I think that only works with Maxtor drives. I haven't yet bought the HDD, so I don't know what brand I'll be dealing with. Also, there's only 1 SATA connector inside the computer, so I guess one of the drives will have to connect via USB. Any help here will be appreciated. Thank you.

We have several systems that are not likely to be replaced within the next ten years. The use a dos os and the file structure uses less than 100 MB. We use the 3 1/4 floppy for backup and communicate through the com port to make backups of the db. I have a thought to replace the ide hard drive with a flash drive. Is there an adapter that would allow you to use the ide port on the mother board to plug in a usb drive? There are probably some connectivity issues with bootup that but can probably be addressed by booting from floppy, or even by placing the right files on stick. Any thoughts?

A:IDE replacement hard drive

What are these DOS systems used for? Some sort of monitoring of equipment? There is probably no provision to boot from an external device on these, and I don't think they can be made to boot from anything but a internal hard drive or Floppy

A:need Hard disc replacement for HP G60-530US

Hi, I don't see any reason why a 7200 RPM hard drive would not work.  I put SSDs in both of my latops and didn't have any issues.  One SSD needed a firmware update but otherwise no issues. You might want to double check the size of the hard drive to make sure that a standard 2.5" laptop drive will fit inside the hard drive caddy.

My 80 GIG hard drive is making grinding noises and is about to give out. Best-Buy has a bargain 160 GIG drive on sale today ($39) so I am doing the obvious this afternoon and going to replace mine.
I would like to have some assurance I am taking all the correct steps before i shut down my PC and cannot get back online for advise.
1. I made a complete backup copy of my C: and Da partition on one drive) onto a seperate external hard drive using NERO.
2. I made a startup disk on 3 1/2 disk.
3. I have my Windows ME disk available.
4. The old hard drive has not completely given out so I prefer to try to extract all the files directly rather then through the external backup.

1. Mount the new drive as SLAVE and use DOS XCOPY to copy all files from old to new drive.
2. Remove old drive and set new drive as MASTER
3. If those steps didnt work then start computer with 3 1/2 disk and install Windows ME from CD (oops-will I have CD drivers? how do I load those?)
4. If I get Windows loaded then load NERO software and use restore function to extract backup from the external hard drive.
restart the computer

Am I on the right track? should that 3 1/2 disk have any more files? maybe some drivers to see the CD and the external hard drive?
Will I have to mess with the BIOS I get to it from F8 key-right?
What steps have I missed? Should I have any other backups of system files?

A:Hard drive replacement-steps ok?

This is what I would do Knot ok
You have 2 hdd's and the 80 gig is still ok yes?
Make sure the second (back up) drive is empty and just back up your .exe progs like nero or firefox etc.
Make sure no ME OS files are on it, remove it and set the jumpers to slave.
Make a ME boot disk then install your new drive jumpered as master.
You will of course have to fdisk it and format it.
Install ME then add the second drive. Then just transfer your .exe files back onto the new drive to a folder of your choosing.

First many thanks for any and all help as this is my first time posting. I replaced the hard drive on my dell 9200 dimension with a WD blue cav this am. Took a while as I'm pretty green at this but managed to get it up and running and windows xp downloaded. Problem is I couldnt connect to internet went to the dell site on my laptop plugged in the service tag and downloaded both the most recent bios and chipset software installation to disc then downloaded it to the dimension. Ran both independently of one another rebooted and still am getting yellow ? marks in Device manager on Ethernet Controller, PCI Device and video controller ... what am I doing wrong here??

A:problems with hew hard drive replacement

Did you download/install...the drivers for the Ethernet controller/network function...if the PCI device is a modem, I would not bother with that unless you are on dialup . Just disable the modem in the BIOS settings.

Or you can install it .

Hello, I have a Latitude E5520 which has been hanging at srartup with a Startup Repair that is going on for ever. I run the ePSA diagnostics and got the Error Code 2000-0142 with validation 14116, which means the hard drive is not working properly and should be replaced. This part is covered by my warranty and eligible for an automated dispatch. So all I have to do is fill in my shipping info. BUT I don't have an OS CD. I see you provide online all the drivers etc., but I am worried how I would be restoring the system with the windows 7 OS without a CD, or a restore CD. Is the replacement hard drive equiped with the restore the OS option? Or it comes totaly blank?

A:Hard Drive replacement and OS restoration

You will also need to request Restore Media since you are still under warranty.

Hi, I need to replace the hard drive (ST31000528AS) on my HP Pavilion p6580t CTO.  I am trying to find what drives are compatible.  Will ST1000DM003 (promoted as a newer version of the ST31000528AS) work?  How about the Kingston SSDNow UV400 SSD (it is smaller, but I do not need so much storage)?

A:Hard drive replacement options

The ST1000DM003 is an excellent replacment. You must replace the old drive with the SAME capacity or larger. Otherwise it will fail to acknowledge the new drive. The ST1000DM003 is a SataIII (6Gb/sec drive, but the 64MB cache file will speed up your system slightly.

The Hard Drive on my Compaq Presario 900US laptop recently died on me, but when I looked on the Compaq website for a replacement, it suggested I buy a 40GB disk for $415. I figured it would be a lot cheaper to just buy a drive off Ebay or something, however, I don't know to much about laptop hard drives. Will any 9.5mm HDD work in this laptop, or how do I know if a certain drive will or will not work in it? Basically I am asking, if I just buy the cheapest drive I can, will it work in the laptop? (Note: this computer does not need a great drive, it just needs one that works.)

A:Laptop Hard Drive Replacement

It'll work fine, and it'll cost you a lot less than $415!

When replacing this drive, is there anything specific that I have to look for in a new hdd? Is SATA III ok or do I stick with SATAII?
Do I need cables? or would they already be in there from old hdd?
Any help would be appreciated.

A:Solved: Hard drive replacement

As long as the new drive is at least 1TB you should be ok. If the failing drive uses MBR partitioning I wouldn't go higher than 2TB because anything larger needs to use GPT partitioning not MBR and that could become a problem.

You can get a Sata 3 drive, it will run at Sata 2 speed though. Existing cables should work ok.

Make sure you have made the Macrium boot CD to restore the image !

EDIT : Do the restore with only the new drive connected, remove the failing drive before you start the restore.

The 80GB hard drive failed (too many bad sectors) which I replaced with new Hitachi 80GB drive purchased from a 3rd party.I formatted the drive and restored the image from a backup (using an HP NAS Mediaserver).  However, the system will not boot from the new hard drive, I get only a blinking white cursor in the upper left corner of a black screen.  Do I have to purchase the recovery media from Lenovo to setup the hard drive before I restore? If so, can I do so on line? (Why can't Lenovo spend another $0.90 and include a recovery CD like Apple does?.....sorry a short vent) Thanks for any insight.Gregmun

Go to Solution.

A:Z60m Hard Drive Replacement

You need the recovery media to restore the harddrive to the factory condition, or alternatively you can download a windows ISO from the web or use a XP Pro cd from one of your friends, and then use your own Serial number. Then proceed to download all the relevant driver, you would have pretty much everything except the recovery partition. It's up to you.

I have a Vista 64 OS. When I start my computer my hard drive makes a grinding noise now and then. The computer is 5 years old and I am wondering if the drive has reached its end. I can buy a new hard drive and install it. However I have no idea what to do in order to install the OS. I have start up CDs (DVDs).

Should I buy and install the new drive now or wait until it fails?

I would appreciate your help on the procedure to install the OD into the new drive. Thanks
