How to access the BIOS on Portege 3010ct

Q: How to access the BIOS on Portege 3010ct

I have a Portege 3010ct.
When i got it, it had Windows 98 installed on it but i wanted to put Linux on it so i could learn that.

So i tried getting into the Bios to make it boot from my CD but couldn't get into the Bios or really do anything. So in a final attempt i reformatted the hdd.

Now i can't get into anything.
Can anyone help?

I tried every button i thought might get me into the Bios and even tried hitting all of them, no one can seem to get me into it.

A: How to access the BIOS on Portege 3010ct

Hi

To access the BIOS you should use and press the ?ESC? button immediately after Portege was power up.

But as I understood you right, you want to boot from the internal CD/DVD drive.

Well, you could also try to press the ?C? button.
This would enable the booting from the ODD.

Furthermore pressing F12 button would allows you to enable the boot menu on the screen.
Then choose the CD/DVD drive to boot from CD .

I have a Portege 3010CT that has a Port 24x PCMCIA CD-ROM. The old hard drive is toast and I have installed a new (completely blank) hard drive, onto which I am trying to install Windows 2000. I have updated the Bios to the latest available from Toshiba (8.00) and set the PC Card Controller Mode to PCIC Compatible.

I have created a diskette to boot with drivers for the CDROM from Targus.com(they handle old Port/Noteworthy peripherals) and I keep getting the following error:

PCCARD CDROM Driver 2.27 - (C) Archos 94-98
No Unit Found: driver dumped

A:\>A:\mscdex /D:MSCD001
Device driver not found: 'MSCD001'.
No Valid CDROM device drivers selected.

The CD-ROM has power, the light is on, the cd spins, and the cd tray opens when the button is pushed. Any suggestions?? Or if it is easier, is there a way to create a boot disk to allow me to connect to our network, so I can access the CD-ROM from a share? Thanks.

Folks,

I have been wrestling with this device for a while now and I seem to be progressively making the situation worse.

My current issue is that I can no longer access the BIOS after changing a setting in the BIOS that related to USB emulation (or something like that). I was in the process of trying to make the device boot from a USB and pretty much twiddling with every setting to see what would work.

This one didn't. And now the device no longer responds to F2. It's like it is ignoring the keyboard. Doh!

Is there some way to roll back or re-flash the BIOS? Or another way to access it? I tried an external keyboard, to no avail.

How did I get here?

Well ... I was given this device to put back to factory condition and I could not find an obvious option that would do this, other than the Toshiba Maintenance Utility which looked hopeful. It offered to erase the partition (which at the time seemed fair enough) - BUT THAT"S all it did - so the machine just repeatedly boots, displays "Please insert system disk" and then reboots.

OK, I'm an idiot - but it does seem silly for Toshiba to offer an option that instantly bricks the machine?

Anyway, I've moved on from that problem to one that is significantly more dire. Not being able to access the BIOS means I don't have any options - unless one of you wonderful people can help me discover one.

Help

I have since discovered that the next setting I was going to adjust - the Secure Boot setting - may have solved... Read more

I am trying to reformat a Portege p3500 for my brother's g/f. I have an external usb dvd drive and a copy of XP ready to go. The problem is I cannot get into the stupid bios. I hit esc, during the toshiba boot screen and get the following message. "check system. Press F1" when I press F1 it just goes right back to the toshiba boot screen and from there loads xp. I have looked other places on-line and supposedly pressing F1 accesses the BIOS. Doesn't seem to work for me. I am stuck please help

A:Can't access Portege p3500 BIOS

Boot XP, get into the Control Panel, System, Advanced... choose Startup and recovery Options... and check the timing settings for going into Windows and into recovery options. Set going into Windows to 0 seconds and recovery options to 10 seconds. De select automatic restart and send an administrative alert while you are in there. Try the F2, F10 and DELETE keys

Hello everyone,

I upgraded the BIOS on my Z30-B-119 laptop, and it is much worst than the original BIOS so I would like to downgrade it.
There was no way to save the original BIOS when updating and the previous BIOS is not available on the website.

Do anyone have the original BIOS and knows how to extract it?

Or maybe someone knows how to contact Toshiba technical team directly? (Seeing what they implemented in new BIOS, I have no hopes they read this forum or care about user opinions.)

If you wonder why I want to downgrade and what is wrong with it, see below for explanation.

I was convinced that the new BIOS would fix the problem with the fan, which switched on way too early, but it turned out they made it much worst! Now the fan switches on at 42?. Before it was 50?, which was already a stupid choice of Toshiba engineers, providing that the temperature rating of this CPU is 105? so they could keep the laptop quiet at least up to 60?, especially that many people complain about the fan in this model. Instead, Toshiba did the opposite and lowered the temperature even more.

Seeing how senseless choices their engineers make, I will never buy another Toshiba and will not recommend anyone buying their products. But since I already made the mistake an bought a Toshiba laptop, I hope I will be able to downgrade the BIOS or contact them to ask for an update.

Let me know if you know how to do it.

Hi

On the Toshiba EU driver page you can find only the win-based BIOS update version.
This means that BIOS can be updated from running system only and you need to run Windows OS in order to start the BIOS update procedure. Linux isn't supported in this case...

Here you can find the How to doc about the BIOS update

Hi All,

I have a Toshiba Portege R830, running 32-bit Windows 7 (SP1) enterprise (for work).
I also boot into Linux Mint 14 64-bit, which I have installed on a portable USB HDD (outside work).

I recently bought a USB 3 HDD, but when I connect it to the USB 3 port on my R830, it only gives me USB 2 speeds (25 MB/s).

I checked with some diagnostic utilities (usbdeview, etc), which say that the drive is connected in USB 2.1 mode.

The drive reports itself as being USB 3, the cable is USB 3 (SuperSpeed), and the port I'm using on the R830 is 3.

I experience the same, whether I boot into windows or linux.

I updated all drivers on both OSs, to no avail.

next i tried to update the BIOS, but I keep getting the following error:
"An error occurred while preparing the update environment.
You have not given permission to execute the update."

For the record, this is the BIOS I'm going from, & to.
BIOS Version : Current Ver.2.80 --> Updated Ver.4.10
EC Version : Current Ver.1.10 --> Updated Ver.1.60

Does anyone know why I would not be getting USB 3 speeds (which, for my drive, are expected to be around 40 to 50 MB/s), or why all diagnostics are saying USB 2?

Does anyone know how to overcome the BIOS update issue?
(I've tried safe mode, disabling AV, disabling NX)

Cheers

HI

You don?t need to change the booting device in BIOS.
You can also set it while notebook powering up.
Press F12 immediately after the notebook has been powered on
Then a boot menu should appear.
Here you have to choose ODD as booting device and should confirm with Enter.

Hi!

I have a Portege 3440CT with bios version 1.50.

This version does not support large HDD so I thought I'd update the BIOS. (don't know if version 1.60 does either, does anyone know?)

When I try to run the bios-update-program on win2000, it says "Initial error", anyone know what's causing this?

BIOS is downloaded from Toshibas website.

I have no floppy or CD-rom available.
Have tried the updater on win98, and also in DOS and it says "this utility not available on v86 mode!"

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

Ideas, anyone?

A:Bios update on Portege 3440CT.

Sorry CyB but I really do not understand you. If you check Toshiba support page you will find two BIOS updates. Both of them must be done using FDD. So now I am asking myself why you try to do it under running operating system. Sorry but it is really ridiculous.

Toshiba provide two different BIOS updates. One is TRAD (must be done with FDD) and WIN (can be done under running WXP or now Vista). For old notebook models there is no WIN version.

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

As far as I know something like this is not possible and you can check eBay and obtain FDD. You can get it for few bucks. It is really not expensive.

Hi

The istall.exe should not crash and you should not update the BIOS in safe mode!
The Windows should be booted up and should run correctly!

Here is a Toshiba FAQ How to update BIOS:
http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD9502M10000R01.htm

Possibly the error code is related to corrupt windows OS or to missing some necessary Toshiba tools.
Using Win XP the Common Modules should be installed.
Using Vista or Win 7 the VAP (value added packed) should be installed.

This means that you have installed the Win 7 system at your own hand.

The point is that BIOS update requires some essential Toshiba tools.

i do not have a floppy drive on my machine, only usb ports and a sd card slot. How can i upgrade the bios?

pete

A:Portege 4000 bios upgrade

The easiest way is to create a dos boot cd-rom. There are several descriptions on the web. Google for it.
Add the extracted Toshiba bios files biofc67t.com, ec29nobb.bin, chgbiosa.exe and chgfirma.exe to the CD-rom.

At first boot from the cd and run 'chgfirma ec29nobb.bin'.
Now the ECKBC-Firmware is written (don't power off during flash!!!)
Than boot again from cd and run 'chgbiosa biofc67t.com'.
This flashes the Bios.
Both flash are necessary!

Here is how to extract the Toshiba bios file.
At first you have to extract the R211VOL2.exe file. Easiest way to do so is to use 'universal extractor' -- google for it.
After this you will get the file R211VOL2.IMA. This is a floppy image file.
You can extract the single files in the archiv using winimage (trial version should work).

Good luck!

A:Portege 3410 - How to update BIOS and install XP?

Hi

Just one question: Why do you want to update the BIOS? Is it really necessary?
I ask this because this update is always a little bit risky and you could damage the ROM module.
Anyway, have you tried to load default settings in BIOS before you start the update and install XP?

You can install XP without CD. Therefore you must copy the i386 folder on the HDD from another computer and some booting files for HDD? I think you should search a little bit with Google to find workaround for this. You should find enough! ;)

Hello,
I have a Portege Z830 with BIOS version 1.60. It runs a single operating system, ubuntu, (without a windows OS it does not appear to be possible to upgrade the BIOS). I have a bootable USB (debian, created by copying an .iso image using dd) which works on other computers, but not on this one. With USB at the top of the boot priority, it is not recognized as a bootable device and the computer boots from the HDD. The boot is in legacy mode, not UEFI (there is no UEFI/legacy switch in the BIOS menu).

Any pointers how to enable a boot from a USB on this computer?

Thanks and kind regards,

James

As you probably know, Toshiba doesn't support Linux so you cannot upgrade BIOS under Linux OS.

Hi there,

My Portege A600-13Y BIOS is version 1.50:

- should I upgrade to 2.00WIN?
- I found this source for the biso upgrade 2.0 but there is no indication that this file is authentic TOSHIBA bios.
No checksums, no ssl certificate, nothing. Is it possible to get it in a secured / authenticated way?

Thanx for answers,
Schneiderlein

A:Re: Portege A600-13Y: BIOS update 1.50 to 2.00-WIN - How risky it is?

Hi

First of all you should use and download the BIOS files only from Toshiba website.
The Portege A600-13Y PPA61E is a Toshiba European notebook model and all the drivers and BIOS can be found on the Toshiba driver page.

I don?t know why you ask for the checksums or ssl certificate? the Toshiba websites are safe?
but everyone who needs the drivers or BIOS can download it?

You should only ensure that you have chosen the right notebook model and that you have downloaded the right BIOS!

But why you want to update the BIOS?
If your notebook is running troublefree then a BIOS update is not important? I follow always this advice; never change a running system.

I'm thinking there might be a similar machine that works in Vista or maybe just an A100 BIOS that will suffice?

Many thanks!

A:Vista on Portege A100 - Can I update the BIOS?

Hi

May I ask where did you found the Vista Value Added Package for Portege A100?
I didn?t find this Value Added Package on the Toshiba Europe site.

There are only 3 files for Vista. One of the files is BIOS v1.60-WIN which seems to be OS-independent.

Regarding the BIOS;
You should know that the BIOS update is always risky.
If you will use wrong BIOS version or wrong BIOS update procedure you can damage the motherboard!!!
?and as you probably know the motherboard is one of the expensive notebook parts!!!
It?s not worth to trying something which can damage the notebook. You know?

A:I loss BIOS password for my Portege S100

Hi

Unfortunately nobody here can help you with this. BIOS password is very important security feature and it cannot be solved on some public forums.
This can be solved with authorized service only.

Response code can be given by Toshiba only and they don't give it to anyone. Only authorized service provider can get it after check if notebook is not stolen.
Contact nearest Toshiba service provider and they can help you wth this.

Bye and good luck.

Can anyone help with this problem.

At our site we have approx 300 of these laptops and they are all bios protected.
Recently had a problem where when inputting the bios password and it says its incorrect even though its the standard password we use on all our laptops. The user also confirms they didn't set a password...

Is it possible for the bios to somehow have become currupted (the machine was experiencing blue screens before) or how can I factory reset the bios password.

Before anyone says yes we own the machince and can prove it!

A:Portege R700 protected by unknown BIOS password

Maybe it sounds stupid but I think you should clarify this with nearest Toshiba service provider.
I use Toshiba notebooks for years now and I know for sure that Toshiba doesn?t sell notebooks with any kind of password or such kind of protection.

If you have such amount of notebooks maybe there was some special dial about configuration or protection. Anyway, BIOS password removal cannot be theme on such public forum. BIOS password protection is very important security feature and if there is some problem it must be clarified with authorized Toshiba service provider.

BIOS password cannot be set or changed from alone and, as far as I know, there is no kind of factory reset. I just know that BIOS can be set to default settings. That?s all.
Contact nearest Toshiba service provider and clarify this issue.

Hello Forum,

i have exactly the same problem as described here, 2 years ago:
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=65519

I need to update my BIOS, but i cant because the BIOS Updater tells me that Intel-TXT is enabled.
Unfortunatelly i cant disable it in my bios. Its just not selectable. The "cursor" just jumps over it.
I can only "Hide" it which doesnt help.
I have the same for the VT-d and VT-x setting in the BIOS. This is not selectable or changeable as well.

TPM isnt enabled though...
I installed the infineon suite and it tells me that i need to enable TPM in bios to use it. :-(

I have an very old Bios Version 3.1 and i read in the changelog that in V3.4 and 3.5 there were many TPM related changes....

Anyway....
Back then, a user named Paolo30 uploaded a file P007Dv360A_EC77V140.zip to 2shared.com which fixed this.
Unfortunatelly this file was deleted on 2shared.com

can someone please provide that file (or a later bios update) which fixes this?
Thanks in advance.

A:Need Portege R830 BIOS Update without Intel-TXT Check

Port?g? R830-10P belongs to the PT321 series so you need BIOS released for Port?g? R830 PT321

You can download such older BIOS versions from different Toshiba driver pages.
For example: http://www.toshiba-asia.com/sg/support/drivers

On this Toshiba Asia page I could find all BIOS for this Portege model.

Hi,

My Portege R700M stopped working after I spilled tea on it. Service center had rejected it quoting 'Motherboard, damaged', The laptop was setup for BIOS password protection for HDD.

Even though the hard drive is intact, I am not able to recover the data from due to BIOS password protection. will Toshiba able to help me unlock the password.

Regards

A:Defective Portege R700M - BIOS & HDD password reset

I presume mainboard is defective and will be replaced. I presume HDD is OK so I believe your original HDD will be used again. After mainboard replacement you don?t need BIOS password anymore. New mainboard will not be secured by BIOS password.

At least explain the situation and Toshiba technicians will explain to you how it works.

Well - I found the answer to the first question - how to enter Bios in W10 - in the energy options you have to disable quick start-up - then you can enter BIOS by just holding the F12 at powering up. Worked on my two Portege.

Hi,

how can I update my BIOS when using Ubuntu Linux?

The reason why I'd like to update my BIOS is that on the one hand Ubuntu
writes an error message during boot-up and recommends to upgrade it and on
the other hand I'm afraid that there is maybe a temperature problem, at least the
notebook becomes slower after working for a while.

The notebook operating temperature usually is between 45-64 degrees.
The fan turns on at 62 degrees and turns off at 52 degrees.

Temperature seems to be pretty normal I would say but I think its not normal that the
notebook becomes slower when operating above 50 degrees.

I already opened it, it seems to be all right with the cooling unit, no dirt e.g...

Maybe I just persuade myself I and the performance is completely normal for a PIII with
866MHz??

Thank you

A:Portege 2010 BIOS update / operating temperature

Dear Julio

I presume you know that Linux is not supported OS and designed BIOS update is created to be performed in running Windows OS. This nice Portege is known to me and I know very well that it is not the fastest notebook and it is designed for business purposes like working with Office, e-mail communication and every other everyday activity.

Because of that answer to your latest question can be: yes you persuade yourself.

Hi,

I recently picked up a Portege M200 and installed (via PXE - network install) Windows 7 on it. I would like to upgrade the BIOS as it's still at the original BIOS (1.1). I downloaded and extracted the pkg and tried to install via Windows but it says my OS isn't supported. I don't have an external CD drive or FDD - how can I update the BIOS? I tried to put it on a USB drive but there doesn't seem to be an option to boot from USB.

Thanks!

A:Portege M200 BIOS update running Windows 7?

Ok, I'm thinking I could use an SD card but I see it's not recognized by Windows 7 and when I put in a card, nothing happens...

Anyone know where I can find a driver for it? I do see there are 2 devices not recognized - one "Base System Device" and one "Unknown Device"...

And I see it doesn't recognize the video card either - just uses Standard VGA Graphics Adapter which seems to work fine...

Hi,

I'm wanting to see if there's a BIOS update that will allow me to Boot from a USB Device.

The issue I am having is that I need to reinstall Windows, but the CD ROm cant read discs.
It does Network Booting PXE, but i'm new to this sort of thing and have absolutly no idea what to do there.

Any help would be great,

A:Portege A100 PPA10A - Will BIOS update allow to boot from a USB device

Hi

Portege A100 seems to be developed only for Australian market.
As you said there is a Portege A100 PPA10A-0002L model number listed on the Toshiba Australian page but the Portege A100 PPA10A-0002LP belongs to the same series which is PPA10A.
So in my opinion the BIOS should work too.

Anyway, I doubt that the BIOS update will add any further booting options.

Usually the BIOS support the booting from CD/DVD drive, HDD, LAN and USB FDD.
It should be possible to boot from a bootable diskette using an USB FDD drive.
I doubt you would be able to boot from USB ODD since this Portege A100 supports an internal CD/DVD drive.

I think that error code means there is a Graphical/Video problem. The Mainboard or VGA Board may need replacing, or there may be a loose connection.

EC Version: Current Ver. 1.30 -> Updated Ver. 1.50
Bios and EC should be updated

During the BIOS update seems following message:

+An error occurred while preparing the update environment. You have not given permission to execute the update.+

My settings:
- BitLocker is switched off.
- No connection to a docking station
- Windows 7 is installed
- Boot mode is on? I guess it means:

Right my BIOS was on 1.20 when I went to Toshiba website to get the drivers to install and found the BIOS update so I followed the instructions burn it to a floppy disk the last one I have and away I went but after the update I noticed that xp said it was running at 600 MHz not 1,2ghz.

So I used cpuid to see if it was xp but it shows the processor as running 598.6 MHz and can flux to 600.4 MHz max so I went into the BIOS tried CPU max disabled CPU sleep and rebooted so then I thought it was xp so I reinstalled but still the same I used Suse Linux still the same.

I?ve reflashed the BIOS with 1.50 through windows rebooted still the same. I am getting on where and this is getting silly I even went and found all BIOS versions from the Toshiba American site which goes back to version 1.10 to 1.50 so I tried all of them. Nothing!

I am really baffled at this can anybody sort this out it is really annoying and slow.
Thank you in advanced

A:Portege M100 - Processor Stuck on 600Mhz, have tryed every BIOS version

Hi

Just one question; was the motherboard replaced in the past?

As far as I know after the motherboard replacement the test & diagnostic should be performed in order to update the CPU microcode on the PCB.
If the microcode is not updated then your CPU would stuck at 600Mhz.

In order to update the microcode, the ASP must be contacted.

The other reason why the CPU runs only at 600Mhz is the low CPU processing setting in Toshiba power saver.
Check if the Toshiba power saver is installed on your notebook and set the options to a higher level.

Check it out?

Hi,

Yesterday my anti-virus software let me know a virus was trying to access my computer, had quarantined it and asked for a reboot of my Portege M200 to remove it completely. On rebooting, the notebook did not actually reboot and just hung. It gets past the Toshiba window and hangs. I have tried starting it in safe mode but to no avail. It starts loading files and hangs at a particular system file which is obviously now corrupt. I tried to get into my recovery console using Windows XP recovery disks but was unable to do so. The threads on this forum have been helpful however I have still not solved the issue.

I have my product recovery DVD-ROM but I am scared to use it as the warning coming with it says that reformatting will lose all of my work and I am not sure if it will automatically reformat my hard drive (as I have no back ups of my work) or will I be given a choice? Also, I see from your forums that it will not actually repair any corrupt OS files. I have also seen files about making a ghost image to a floppy drive but I do not have a floppy drive on my Portege M200.

Can anyone please provide me with steps to solve this issue as I am 11 hours trying to fix this but to no avail!
Thanks

A:Portege M200 - Cannot access recovery console

You are right about recovery image. Recovery image is designed for clean OS only and there is no option for OS repair. What you can try is to obtain Microsoft WXP installation disc and start repair option.

I hope this will help you and you will be able to start preinstalled OS. If this will work at first back up all your important data.

Quick question - will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

Layout looks similar; albeit a different colour.

A:Will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

Hi

I think you cannot use the same keyboard because the Portege S100 supports the an-easy-to-use 84-key (US) or 85-key (UK) keyboard and the Portege M100 supports the an-easy-to-use 85/86-key keyboard.
Furthermore the connector of the S100 supports the CN3230 keyboard interface 34 pin connector and the M100 supports the PJ3230 keyboard 34pin connector.

So possibly this could be a problem.
I recommend using the original keyboards released for the each notebook model.

Does anyone know if I can disable the BIOS security while in the OS using the biomentric security rather than entering a password? I have tried just changing the admin password within the win OS but that doesn't work....any ideas?

Any help with be greatly appreciated!

I am having some errors causing crashes on occasion. Thats not what I am here for today though I can deal with that later. When my comp starts to reboot I can't seem to access BIOS, if I can access the Boot Order by hitting F12 I have no control whatsoever on the choices no up or down or even hitting enter works. Also when I go into Error Recovery Console the same thing no controls whatsoever I can make, no arrow keys or hitting any keys work and I have to just sit there and let it choose whatever it defaulted to. I have re-installed Windows 7 but the problem persists. Would really appreciate your help.

A:Unable to access arrow keys or any controls in Error Recovery Console or access BIOS

I would suspect that your bios is not loading the keyboard or mouse, except for your only reference to the error recovery console? Do you mean you have the controls elsewhere, but not there?
But, if the loss is general, the quickest way is to reset the bios. You would normally do this by locating the small bios battery on the motherboard. Remove this and, in its vicinity (better if you browse or refer to a manual for the motherboard!) there will be a small three pin tag, with a joiner across two of the pins. Move the joiner to the other two pins for about one minute, This will return the bios to defaults. If you cannot locate this pin, you will have to leave the computer, with the battery out for quite a while - I would guess possibly over 24 hours, to reset the bios.
But, before, You do not say how you have tried to access the bios? (DEL on startup: F2 on startup are two choices)

After upgrading to W10 I also uppgraded the bios.  Booting is successfull but the "ESC"-option to enter Bios does not appear.  Tapping ESC or F10 has no effect. The booting proceeds and W starts. If however I press either one of them continously after power on the unit starts beeping and has to be shut off. I have emptied the CMOS by removing the RTC battery and pressing the power button for 30 secs.  With and without the main battery inserted. No change. Any suggestions anyone?

A:Need help with access BIOS again

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Open up your case, and carefully remove the cmos battery.

Hold the battery only by it`s edges, and not top and bottom. Wait for a few minutes, then replace the battery.

This should have reset you bios to the default settings.

One you have finished, You will need to go into your bios in order to reset some things back to how they were before you took out the battery.

Hi everyone...

So, I have a friend's HP Pavilion sitting here in my office. I need to do a hard drive swap. The computer has one HDD, which is completely fried - it won't even power up. Straightforward job - she wants me to put in a new drive, and reinstall Windows 7 on that drive.

Here's the problem: I've been trying to access the BIOS - specifically, to change the boot order - so that I can boot from the Windows disk and get the OS installed. The thing will NOT let me change the boot order. I've tried every POST keystroke and keystroke combination I can find - even from the HP forums, but the thing will not let me into the BIOS. The boot menu does NOT give me the option to change the boot order - which I find perplexing.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

If a desktop I would use the motherboard jumper to clear CMOS and possibly change the battery. When you are in the boot menu, you can't highlight a selection with the up/down arrow keys?

Had this issue for a while and I just now had a need to enter it.

I have tried ESC, F1-F12, END, INSERT, DEL, the default "Enter" key that my startup guide says, along with the 'break' command. None have worked.

Not sure if it is the key binding for it or if I just can't enter it.

Any ideas?

A:Can't even access BIOS?

If this is a desktop model, clear CMOS by doing the following

Either use the jumper. It should be near the CMOS Battery or Unplug the power, remove the battery, hold the power button down for 10 seconds. Replace the battery and the power cord.

This is a EFI BIOS. The E6 code means it could not finish loading drivers.

Do you have a model number of the motherboard? Depending on the model number the jumper method may be a little different but here is the instructions for one board. The motherboard manual would give you a location of the jumper.

CMOS Jumper
The CMOS jumper is used to clear the CMOS configuration to reset the CMOS. This has the same result as when you remove the CMOS battery. To use this jumper:

Open the chassis and move the jumper from pins 1 & 2 to pins 2 & 3.

Plug power back in and turn on the system.

Wait 10 - 15 seconds.

Turn off the system and disconnect power.

Move the jumper back to pins 1 & 2.

Close the chassis and reconnect power.

When you boot you should see something like hold F2 to enter setup or something like that.

look for it when you turn on your computer. Then again since it is a retail computer it(the BIOS) might be locked.

Hello! I know the reason: It is a Compaq Deskpro 4000 and because of the the way it is designed, the access to the BIOS is a program installed on the Hard Drive that stays as a "Non DOS" partition. Because the Hard Drive was formatted, I now have to install a "patch" on the Hard Drive thru a floppy disk that will bring the F10 key back to life. Can anyone of you direct me to the "patch"? I went to Compaq.com and I couldn't find it. Thanks for your help!!!!

Hi everyone;

I need your help. I am going to install 7, but, I have a problem during installation that I should disable AHCI mode. I found that I should go into BIOS. I have a Sony vaio laptop that I tried all keys like F1, F2, DEL, ESC, F10 ...Just F2 works and go to setup. In setup screen, I can see just main, security, boot and exit tabs. I don't know is it bios? If so, how can I disable AHCI mode? I didn't find anything.
Thanks in advance

A:Bios Access

Hi,

Usually its the F2 key for the Vaio's if I'm not mistaken. Hold that down when you reboot.

I use Window7 HP 64. This may or may not be W7 related. I recently realized I can no longer enter my Dell laptops's BIOS screen by pressing F12 nor the setup by pressing F2 before Windows starts, and that boot up takes a very long time. After that, the computer work fine. I need to access BIOS b/c I want to install a SSD.

If you put xp on it then you are in the wrong place (this is vista), but someone can probably still help... I'm not familiar with xp, but to enter the "bios" you should have to hit the f2 key as the computer starts to boot up.(splashscreen, "acer logo")... http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/accessbios.htm

If you are trying to enter the "task manager" that may be ctrl + alt + del (for xp).....sorry if none of this helps....good luck

PS: If your not that "techie" be very careful in the bios !!!

PSS: I just noticed you double posted...disregard if your already being helped....lol

Hey. I didn't see a more appropriate board so I am posting this here. I am on Vista with an Asus board, and I don't seem to be able to access BIOS anymore. I hit DEL as I am supposed to, but it just won't work. The reason I need to do that is because I am trying to reformat my computer, but I have to change boot priorities before it will let me boot from a CD. I have been able to enter my BIOS many times before without any trouble.

Is there an alternative way to get into BIOS? Any suggestions on where I can go from here? Thanks!

Hi all, I just upgraded my system with a Pentium 4 D 945 and ECS mob(P4P800PRO) Everything booted up fine but I cannot access the bios screen for some reason.Post screen says press delete key, the manual says F1 or delete key but I tried them both and it just goes right to windows xp load screen. This upgrade from my old abit ai7 and P4 3.2 sure doesnt seem alot faster than the new hardware. Course, I had 2 gb of ddr in old system but new motherboard(which I'll probably replace with a high-end mob soon) only has 2 ddr slots and 2 ddr2 slots so right now I'M ONLY RUNNING WITH 1GB PC3200.But it seems like my sisters p4 d840 runs faster? So I thought I'd do some bios checking but I just cant get into it. I have a Microsoft natural keyboard 4000 via usb. Can anyone tell me why I cant enter the bios? thanks

Hi all,

I decided to re-install my OS on Saturday as my kids had filled it with a lot of junk and I thought a nice clean re-install would be a good idea. Switched the boot sequence to CD drive and off I went. No problem until I had finished the installation and when I tried to get into the BIOS set up I can't, the screen simply hangs on the Asus graphic with the words "Press Del to go to set up". The issue I have now is that I need to have a boot CD in to continue to use the PC.

Can anyone think of any reason why I can't access the BIOS setup or is there another way in?

MoBo - Asus PG5c - mx/1333
OS - XP Pro SP3

Many thanks

Sam
