Portege 2000 - memory upgrade

Q: Portege 2000 - memory upgrade

I am the owner of an old but good laptop Toshiba Dynabook SS 2000 (aka portege 2000). Hardware is: P750 / 128M / 20Gb. Long ago, RAM has been increased to 256 MB, but this is not enough.

Is it possible to replace the 128 MB module with new 256 MB to increase RAM to 384 mb?
Or maybe the only set the same volume as on the board?

A: Portege 2000 - memory upgrade

European Portege 2000 can be upgraded to 512MB. Compatible 256MB memory module has part number PA3158U-1M25.

I think you can use it on your Dynabook SS 2000. Check it out.

I have a Portege 4010 and cannot find the memory expansion bay to upgrade the memory. Under my laptop is the harddrive, dvd, battery and what I think should be the memory, BUT it has 2 wires attached to it.

A:Portege 4010 - Memory upgrade

The memory modules are hidden under the keyboard!
So you will have to remove firstly a think plastic cover above the F1-F12 keys.
Then you should find 2 screws which secure the keyboard.

Please be careful because the keyboard is attached to motherboard with a thin flat cable?

Then you could see the memory modules. Gently press out on two latches.
One end of the expansion memory module will pop up. Then grasp the expansion memory module and pull it out.

Hope this helps...

I recently bought a Z930 laptop, and I was thinking on upgrading the RAM memory.

I wanted to buy a 8gb DIMM, but I noticed on the specs that the maximum memory allowed is 6 gb (that means a 4gb DIMM + 2gb on the motherboard). Is this a motherboard restriction or similar? If not, would the laptop run with 10gb of memory?

A:Portege Z930-10E - Memory upgrade

The max says 4GB but you may be able to get an 8GB module working if it's decent RAM that has the correct channels. But if something goes wrong and damages the mainboard I doubt Toshiba would repair it under warranty, so I think the best thing to do is stick with the recommended maximum. 6GB is plenty anyway unless you are doing heavy graphical/media creation.

I have an old Toshiba Portege 4000 laptop.
The user manual says a memory upgrade up to 512MB (2x256MB) is possible. But the technical specification on the toshiba-direct website says a memory upgrade up to 1GB (2x512MB) is possible.
I brought 2x512MB (SO-DIMM 512MB SD RAM SDRAM PC133 PC 133 512 MB 144 PIN) NO-NAME memory at ebay and it doesn't work. The system won't boot.

Now my question. Can I go up to 1GB with the toshiba recommended Kingston memory or won't it work in general?
Anyone there with experience on this?

Thanks in advance.

A:Portege 4000 memory upgrade 1GB?

normally a portege 4000 is indeed upgradeble up to 1 gb ( 2x 512 mb sdram pc133, 3,3v )

however the architecture and number of chips on the modules can cause a incomptability, so 'bad luck' I suppose

on ebay-express you can find them for about 50 US$ ( search for portege 4000 ; memory )

I'd like to upgrade my Portege 4010 memory and I know that I need 144pin/PC133 SO-DIMM SD-RAM. Unfortunately I couldn't figure out (even after talking to Toshiba Austria), if I have to buy low or maybe high density memory.

Most of the cheap memory on eBay is high density and I'm afraid to buy an incompatible one.

I hope somebody already has experience with that. It seems to be my last chance to get some competent information.

Thank you.

A:Memory upgrade on Portege 4010

As I remember maximum memory for Portege 4010 is 1 GB (2 x 512 MB) and it doesn't matter if you choose high or low density version.
If you need 100% guarantee you choose the low density version.

I have a M780. I wanted to upgrade to 8GB. But if I open the memory module, I find only one slot for the memory. How can I access the other one to put in 2x4GB?

As they seem to be similiar to the M750, maybe it is the same with the M750 and someone can answer this question. Could not find a service manual for the M750/M780 either.

A:Portege M780 - How to upgrade the memory?

Hi schuerstedt,

You really ask where to find the other memory module slot?
User manual is not interesting for you? Right???

Well, if you check the user manual, you can find an exact description how to replace both memory modules with a lot of pictures.
Check this!!!

Btw, the other slot is placed under the keyboard.

I have a Portege 4000 and would like to upgrade the memory from 256MB to 512MB.
It has 98SE and the user would still like to keep this system.

Does anyone know if there is a known problem upgrading to 512MB as I saw a thread in 2005 from someone who had a problem?

I guess the memory is PC133 SODIMM. I ordered a 512MB RAM from aememory last year, but the system would not even start. Perhaps they had sent me the wrong chip?

A:Portege 4000 - I would like to upgrade memory from 256MB to 512MB

Hmm?. maybe the RAM modules are not 100% compatible?
From my knowledge it should be possible to upgrade the RAM to max. 1GB (2 x 512MB)
You could also upgrade it to 512MB using one module or two 256MB modules.

You have to use the 144-Pin PC133 SODIMM modules and I found these modules which are compatible:
PC133 512MB (PA3108U-1M51)
PC133 256MB (PA3086U-1M25)

Check also this page:

Currently my notebook has the standard 4GB of memory using the HP provided Hynix HMT451S6AFR8A SoDIMM, 12800 DDR3L-1600, 1.35V. I have been looking to replace it with either Kingston HyperX, HX316LS9IB2_8, DDR3L-1600 (2x4GB) kit or the Crucial Ballistix Sport CT6278900, DDR3L-1600 (2x4GB) kit. Both have 9-9-9 timings. My question is will the memory with lower timings and the density of the chips work on my HP 2000-2d37cl notebook with an AMD A6-5200 CPU? Also I was curious about postings in the forums where persons had lost the Admin or other passwords on theirHP 2000 notebooks or they purchased a used notebook that had a unknown password. They provide the codes from the error on screen and the reply's from techs allowed them to get past this and reset their systems. I hope I never have that problem, however where exactly are the techs getting the codes from? Is there some program or document available that has the code alogrithm? Thank You.

I just upgraded the memory in my Dell CPxJ laptop from 128mb to 256mb. I had to update my BIOS, but when I did everything worked fine. For one day. Then I started getting the blue screen with the ACPI Stop Error.

I have:

Removed the new memory stick. The machine worked fine.
Replaced my existing memory stick with the new one (in DIMM A). The machine worked fine.
Put the old memory stick in DIMM B and the new one in DIMM A. I got the Stop Error.
Put the old stick in DIMM B with nothing in DIMM A. The machine wouldn't boot.

Any advice that anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

One of my customers brought me a Toshiba Portege 2000 that he wanted cleaned and reloaded with XP Pro. This is a superslim laptop, no internal drives. It will not boot to a USB device (i.e. USB CDROM), and has no floppy. The only device it will recognize is a PCMCIA CDROM from Targus. I do not want to purchase one just to reload Windows on this machine, so, we removed the hard drive, and with an adapter, we connected the drive to another computer and were able to format the hard drive.

We attempted to load XP on the drive using the CDROM in the other computer and it seemed to work (it ran all the way through the setup procedures) until we put the hard drive back in the laptop. Then it would stop at the option screen for safe mode and freeze.

So, how do we get the install files on the hard drive so that Windows can load from the drive while installed in the laptop?

A:Solved: Loading XP Pro on Portege 2000

Well, I sent this bad boy in to an authorized service center. Come to find out that they can get XP loaded, but Toshiba no longer supports this laptop and offers NO DRIVERS! If you do not have the original Toshiba Recovery CD, you are screwed!

Can you guys please help me?

The last option I have in mind would be to setup Windows XP over a network. This portege 2000 is capable of booting over PXE, the thing is I dont know how to do it! Can anybody tell me how to boot over PXE?

Thanks alot.

A:Portege 2000 - How to install Windows XP without ODD and FDD?

I?m not sure but as far as I know if you copy the Windows XP CD on the HDD and then you boot from external FDD (this should work) you can start the setup.
Copy the XP CD on your HDD with an external HDD case on an other computer, create a XP boot floppy and start from it.
Go to the I386 folder and start the WINNT.EXE

Or you use the CD/DVD drive from an other computer with the netbootdisk. I have found this with Google:

Hello friends :)

I have problem with installation Windows 2000 on Portege 3440.
I was running installation Windows 2000 with FDD USBB (with driver for CD-ROM PCMCIA) and CD-ROM PCMCIA. All was ok to moment when I entered to ?winnt" on ?q?.

During installation without partition on HDD was appeared information on blue background: "could not find a place for a swap file. With partition (FAT32, 6GB): " Setup was unable to install Windows Boot Loader. Ensure that your C: drive is formatted and that drive is not damaged." I was tried with three other HDDss.
What I must do to install this system? (Same users don't have such communiques)

Thanks for help

A:Portege 3440 - Can't install Windows 2000

1 be sure to prepare your HD with fdisk ( one bootable partition ) and format it with Fat32 file-system

2 then start with a MSDos bootdiskette in your FDD-drive with the proper ( Freecom ) drivers for your PCMCIA-CDrom drive

3 copy the entire i386 directory from the W2K-installation CD to your HD, be sure to have smartdrive loaded, otherwise it will take ages !

4 start again with the bootdiskette, go to the i386 directory and start WINNT

You can look here for more info concerning the freecom drivers and the bootdisks :
On your 3440 it should be easier than with the R100 because of the normal 2.5" HD of 6gb, but the problem is basically the same

Password can be removed by Toshiba authorized service provider.
The technique for password removing is not the same for all notebook models.

A:Portege 2000 BIOS passoword is needed

It looks like the notebook is locked by BIOS password.
You need the password in order to boot the unit.
If you don?t know the password then you will need to get in contact with an local ASP (authorized service provider) technician which would be able to remove this unknown password.

Good luck

I am trying to install XP on a Portege 2000 using the official Toshiba PCMCIA CD-ROM drive.

The XP install disk boots fine but after Setup has copied files it blue screens (BSOD). I am not very tech savvy but I think this means that the BIOS can "see" the PCMCIA CD-ROM but that the actual XP image loaded by the Setup cannot, probably due to missing drivers for the PCMCIA CD-ROM?

I then thought that perhaps I could use F6 to load extra drivers during the initial setup, but it is beyond me to create the right set of files required. I know you can download Freecom drivers but I don't know which of the CD driver files to use and how to author from scratch the right txtsetup.oem file.

Does anyone know how to successfully use F6 and load drivers for this?

I have found lots of posts suggesting I copy the setup to the HDD and run the setup from there. My problem is that the XP install is an Upgrade CD, so I will be asked at some point to insert a previous Windows CD and if at that point I do not have a working CD-ROM drive...

First post in this forum so be gentle -- I have done a search but not found a thread with an actual solution, but obviously if I have missed one please point it out!

A:Portege 2000 - fresh XP install using PCMCIA CD-ROM

I have successfully installed WXP on Portege 2000 using PCMCIA drive but I?ve used original Toshiba recovery discs that includes right driver for external optical disc drive.

Until now I didn't tried to install WXP using Microsoft installation disc.

Maybe you should obtain installations disc and not use this upgrade disc. I believe on this way you will be able to install WXP as suggested when you copy installations data on HDD directly.
Have you tried to obtain original Toshiba WXP recovery discs?

Hi guys,

I have just been given a Toshiba Portege 2000 Laptop to play around with, but the problem that I am having is that I cannot boot it up to start. I keep getting a message that says:

A disk read error occured Press CTRL+Alt+Del to restart.

The Laptop is running Windows XP Professional have tried to "Google" the message above to see if there is a solution to the problem but I cannot find anything.

Is it true that I can boot from a PCMCIA card? If so how would I go about this? The Laptop does not have a Floppy or CD_ROM drive..

A:Boot Problem (Toshiba Portege 2000 Laptop)

Disk Read Error means there is a problem with the Boot file or that the HDD has failed. Boot into the Setup Bios and see if the HDD is being recognized. Then go to the Boot order, see if you can boot thru a USB device. Make that the first boot device, then you can use either a USB CD rom drive, or a Flash drive with XP on it.

Hi all.

I am having a slight problem with a reinstall of windows 2000 on my portege p4000. Everything seems to work fine except for the wireless. All the drivers are in and there is nothing in the device manager that is listed as sans driver, the wireless client shows a connection to my router, but ipconfig indicates that there is no connection at all.

Could it be that I have installed the drivers and utilities in the wrong order? I would use my recovery cds, but they are damaged.

Does anyone know the correct order to install the drivers or where I can get this information?

Many thanks,

A:Driver install on Portege 4000 with Windows 2000 Pro

Hello Rob

Installations order is important for several things but not for WLAN driver installation. I presume in your case there is no problem with WLAN driver.

Have you tried to configure WLAN using Windows WLAN options? Anyway there must be some connectivity problem. Have you tried to restart your router?

Hi there,

I can't find any tutos on the internet nor in the Toshiba docs on how to open my laptop.
I would like to upgrade from 8 to 16 GB.

I found a lot of screws on the bottom of it, but it seems there are more under the plastic feet. The problem is I don't want to damage them and I would like a manual to see how to get feet off properly in order to be able to remove those screws...

A:Upgrading memory in Portege Z30-B-113

The point why Toshiba does not provide such manual is simply:
The memory in this notebook model isn’t user upgradable part.

This means that removing any covers in order to get access to the memory slots would cancel the warranty.
I think its not worth to risk this....

To keep the warranty valid, the upgrade should be done by authorized service technicians.

System memory standard : 8,192 (4,069 onboard + 4,069) MB
maximum expandability : 8,192 MB

If I understand this info right your Portege has already maximum RAM.
Fact is that your Portege notebook can handle with max 8GB memory. ON board there are already 4GB and there is only one RAM slot available for upgrade that also contains one 4GB RAM module.
With other words your notebook has already maximum RAM and upgrade is not possible.

Hi, I wonder if it's possible to upgrade the processor on my Portege 2010, I work as a pc-technican so I have no problem to do the work.

A:Is CPU upgrade possible on Portege 2010

The CPU upgrade on the notebook is really not easy and tricky. I think you know this because you are a pc-technician.
The Portege 2010 seems to be an oldie? I didn?t find many details about this unit but I found out that this notebook was equipped with the PIII-M (Mobile) 866MHz CPU 133MHz FSB.

What you could do is to install and hardware diagnostic tool to find out what chipset is supported. Then check the details of this chipset (maybe on Intel page) and what CPU could be supported.

However, I?m really skeptical that the notebook will run stable after the upgrade. The overheating could be a big trouble!

The user manual can be downloaded from the Toshiba European page;

Here you should go to Support & Downloads -> Toshiba User Manual.

Maybe you will find some info in the user manual.

But I would like to provide some details too.

I have goggled a little bit and found out that the Toshiba MK1214GAP HDD can be used with the Portege 7200. It?s a 12GB HDD which supports the ATA-2/ATA-3/ATA-4 interface.

Maybe could test it.

According notebook specification your notebook can handle with ?GB RAM but was delivered with 2GB so memory upgrade is not possible.

What to say about SSD? SSD upgrade is possible and you can use 256GB SSD for upgrade. After doing this system will be much faster and you will get definitely more performance and ?speed?.

A:HDD to SSD upgrade - Portege R30 is not booting

Just purchased a R30 and a very cheap OCZ 240Gb SSD
I cannot get the R30 to recognise the new SSD

Is the SSD recognized by BIOS?
The SSD drive should be visible on the first BIOS page… if its not visible, the BIOS does not see the SSD drive…
Why? Mostly due to compatibility issues…

In such case you have no many options; the SSD drive must be replaced with another one which would be compatible…Unfortunately, there are not details which SSD drive would be 100% compatible and therefore you would need to check it at your own hand…

If you found good working one, please share the details here in the community… could be interesting for other members…

Hello Toshiba-Community!

I own a Toshiba Portege 7200 with the following configuration:

- P3 600 MHz
- 320 MB RAM
- 12GB HDD

However, the laptop is running well, but the CPU is pretty slow.

So I wanted to _upgrade the CPU_ with a faster P3.

My questions are:
Is this possible?
What are the requirements?

I searched a lot in the internet but I did not find a solution for this question.

Do you have one?? :-)

thx a lot in advance!

A:Is CPU upgrade for Portege 7200 available?

Usually such upgrades are not easy and in most case to possible and not advisable.

In most cases the different CPU can cause troubles with the BIOS.
Furthermore the higher CPU speed would produce more heat dissipation which could lead to an overheating.

Therefore it?s not advisable to upgrade the CPU

I upgraded my Portege R30-A to add a second SSD (Crucial M550) replacing the optical drive with the new SSD with caddy.

But now the system won't boot automatically from the original SSD.

I could press F12 while turning on my laptop, and bring up the boot manual. Here I can see my original SSD and I can boot from it correctly.

In the boot order in the BIOS, I only see HDD/SSD, USB Memory, ODD .... It doesn't give me the option to choose between SSDs.

Anyway when I boot in this way I get blue screens after a while in win7.

I have tried to instal a HDD as the second disc instead os SSD and the resut is the same.

Is there anything I can do to solve this, now I have to use the second disc as an external USB disc.

A:Portege R30 won't boot from SSD after upgrade to SSD and HDD

Such ODD to SSD/HDD replacement is not always possible and in many cases the BIOS will not handle and will not recognize the new HDD properly.

As far as I can remember some older Toshiba Tecra and Portege notebooks which supported the Slim Select Bay feature were able to handle 2nd HDD instead of ODD drive but this was possible due to available slim select bay.

In your case it looks like the notebook as well as the BIOS does not support such feature and therefore the additional SSD/HDD isn?t recognized properly.

Hi there,

Anyone have tryed to upgrade Z930's SSD?
Looking for some info, they appear to use mSATA interface - mini PCI-E like conectors.

Any specific information about the disk inside?

I'm planning to put this beauty on the machine:

A:SSD Upgrade for Portege Z930

The mSATA connector looks very similar to miniPCI connector but they are totally different.
So your only solution is to replace the HDD with a 2.5" SATA SSD.

Hi there!

I own a Toshiba Portege Z830 - 11M. I want to increase the video memory.
I don't know if it's possible and how to do it. I tried to open bios pressing F2 key (as in the product specifications I received with my laptop) and I arrived to Toshiba Assistance Settings. ESC and F1 keys open the Windows boot settings. If somebody can help me, please advice.

Thank you very much.

A:How to increase Video memory on Portege Z830 - 11M?

Hi Leissa

Generally speaking Port?g? Z830-11M is designed to escort us in usual everyday activities like mail sending, office applications and internet communication and characteristic thin and light design allows us to take it everywhere.

Hardware configuration has of course limited performance but at the same time offers excellent multitasking and long battery life. As far as I know on this machine you will not find option to increase GPU performance and all this works automatically.

According some reviews non demanding games should be playable with this graphics card too.
I cannot imagine that you want to play games with this machine so I would like to know what the reason is to ask about more graphic performance.

I saw the following link which give dates for release of a "full set of WIndows 10 Software components" for some models- probably recent ones . This does not cover the Portege M780 I have or indeed any Portege models far as I can see.

Windows 10 upgrade would be available from microsoft anyway but is there any advice re doing this upgrade from Toshiba or has anyone ese done this or something similar. I am especialy keen to know if the fingerprint reader is supported.

A:Portege M780 - Windows 10 Upgrade

The newer Portege's support Win10, Z930, R30-A.
The M780 may simply be too old to run Win10 smoothly.

I just buyed a Z930 Portege from Toshiba with Win7 Pro installed and 2 DVD with WIN8 upgrade.

Perfect, till I tried to make the upgrade. I changed in BIOS to UEFI and secure BOOT, started the computer with first DVD inside the DVD reader and nothing happend.

Then I started to search on the forum and find out that two other guys succeded with the update according to the paper notice of Toshiba (changing the BIOS and secure boot).

What I can do because main does not work.

Please give me an advice.
It is 12Gmodel, Core i5 vPro

A:Win8 upgrade on Portege Z930

*Solved the issue.*

Just do the changes in BIOS.
Restart and wait till you got the message: restore to the factory setting.

Chose this option, put the DVD1 with W8 from Toshiba in the external ODD and follow the onscreen advices. Just one will be, with changing the DVD1 with the second one.

That is it. You have W8.

I'm happy with my M780-10V and don't plan to change it too soon but would like to enhance it.

I've upgraded RAM to 8GB though windows 7 32bit only recognises 2.9GB - any thoughts?

Has anybody tried going for Windows 7 64bit which should make more RAM available.

Also has anybody swapped out the drive and installed an SSD, I'm think 250GB, I guess that should give it a real boost.

As to swapping the i5 to an i7, I'm not sure that would be worth it - seems an expensive change - as the i7 doesn't seem to add that much looking at the various comparison sites.

Thanks in advance.

A:Portege M780-10V upgrade questions

I've upgraded RAM to 8GB though windows 7 32bit only recognises 2.9GB - any thoughts?

Win 7 32bit as well as other 32bit systems recognize only 3.2GB RAM. This is the 32bit limitation
Therefore its recommended to use 64bit system in case you’ve got more than 3GB RAM
The Portege M780-10V supports up to 8GB RAM therefore the memory upgrade is possible.

Also has anybody swapped out the drive and installed an SSD, I'm think 250GB, I guess that should give it a real boost.

The upgrade from HDD to SSD is the best move you could do… the performance boost will be noticeable. I did such upgrade on my Tecra notebook and I’m very happy with that…

As to swapping the i5 to an i7, I'm not sure that would be worth it - seems an expensive change - as the i7 doesn't seem to add that much looking at the various comparison sites.

In my opinion this is not necessary and I would not recommend you to upgrade the CPU. First of all Toshiba as well as other notebook manufacturers don’t support such CPU upgrades. Nobody knows if such upgrade would not affect the notebook functionality and in worst case the BIOS would not support a new CPU.
At the other hand you will not notice the performance boost using new CPU… in my eyes such upgrade would not be very useful.

I have a R600 10Q and am interested in putting an SSD in to replace the aging/slow HDD have had a look at what other people have been saying and there appears to be some compatibility problems.

Does any one know if these have been fixed with the new BIOS updates? or is there a list of compatible drives?
Has any one had any success with any particular model?

thanks for the help

A:Portege R600 - SSD upgrade question

Most of today's 3rd generation SSD's should work fine. Many of the bugs that affected the earlier SSD's have been resolved now.

Ensure you update the firmware on the SSD before installing Windows. Updating the R600 BIOS is also a good idea. Personally I would buy an Intel or OCZ SSD (the later models).

I am cloning the disks using Acronis True Image, but the new disk crashes with a BSOD seconds after showing the signon screen...

I've got a Portege 4000 and am looking to move on from Windows 98SE. The obvious alternatives are W2000, XP or Ubuntu Linux.

If I can find a full version of WXP, would I be able to do a clean install (rather than upgrade) and get drivers?
Officially, the laptop is only compatible with 98SE or 2000, but these systems are old now.

I imagine if I upgrade XP over 98SE it will keep all the drivers, however this isn't my preferred method of installation and clean installs are better.

A:Portege 4000 - Win 98SE would like to upgrade

Win98 uses the Win95 code base, which is not compatible with NT/2000/XP. So the Win98 drivers wont work.

You should backup your documents, format C:, then install XP fresh.

You can use Windows 2000 drivers in XP - its basically the same OS internally.
If for some reason the Win2000 drivers don't work, you can use XP drivers from other models of a similar era.

i do not have a floppy drive on my machine, only usb ports and a sd card slot. How can i upgrade the bios?

A:Portege 4000 bios upgrade

The easiest way is to create a dos boot cd-rom. There are several descriptions on the web. Google for it.
Add the extracted Toshiba bios files, ec29nobb.bin, chgbiosa.exe and chgfirma.exe to the CD-rom.

At first boot from the cd and run 'chgfirma ec29nobb.bin'.
Now the ECKBC-Firmware is written (don't power off during flash!!!)
Than boot again from cd and run 'chgbiosa'.
This flashes the Bios.
Both flash are necessary!

Here is how to extract the Toshiba bios file.
At first you have to extract the R211VOL2.exe file. Easiest way to do so is to use 'universal extractor' -- google for it.
After this you will get the file R211VOL2.IMA. This is a floppy image file.
You can extract the single files in the archiv using winimage (trial version should work).

Good luck!

2 questions:

1. I'd like to replace my 3 yr old portege a100 hard drive with a 2.5 inch 100-200gb hard drive (internal).
I was wondering if this was possible?

2. I was wondering whether if the hard drive was replaced with a new 100-200gb drive, if Windows XP Professional would run/be allowed to install on the new drive?

Many thanks.

A:Harddrive upgrade on Portege A100

The Windows XP will accept the bigger HDD sizes but not the BIOS!
In worth case the BIOS will not recognize the new HDD and you will be not able to reinstall the OS!

After a short investigation found several compatible HDD sizes for Portege A100.
Seems you can use the 40GB, 60GB and 80GB. In my opinion the 100GB HDD could be also compatible. But you will be not able to use a 200GB HDD. This is simply too much!!!

Like in the topic. Please help; after upgrading to Win 10 there is no keys-backlight after using the FN + Z combination. in bios (after upgrading) everything is fine; so when I turn backlight ON or OFF backlight runs out, but there is problem with Toshiba Funcktion Key driver I think.
I did the reinstalation of this driver, have others toshiba drivers for Win 10 installed (Eco, system driver etc.). Toshiba Funckction key runs for several seconds after system bots up, and is blocked (?) by something after jus several seconds. Weird and very annoying. The fun is that combination for screen brightness (FN + F6 or F7) and for volume up/down (FN + 3 / 4) runs perfectly vell. Backlight
I think the problem is connected with Toshiba Funcktion Key program.

Please help ! Portege is the top class of Toshiba laptops.

I have a Portege r700 with original Windows 7 OEM installation.

The Windows 7 is up to date and Windows Update program is offering me to upgrade to Windows 10.

The upgrade process is starting fine, downloading & pre-configuring all necessary stuff, then finaly ask me to reboot the system in order to go on with the upgrade.

After a few seconds, the reboot process is launched, and load... the current Windows 7 system, saying that an error occured during the upgrade process.

I performed a few tests ; I am also a Linux fan so I tried to boot the system with a LiveCD of my prefered distros : after loading the prompt menu asking what I want to do (liveCD boot, install, diagnose, etc.), it reboots... and show me again the prompt menu (prompt menu is a GRUB feature, the kernel has not been loaded at this time).

I understand that "something" (and I guess it is the Toshiba restauration system) is preventing me to boot on something else than the original partition, preventing the Windows 10 upgrade.

Any idea ?

Is possible?? If yes, how procesor can i used?

A:Portege R500 - Upgrade procesor and RAM

hi RoboS,
first of all the modell number is needed to check which hardware is in the machine.

to upgrade ram: easy - there should be a door marked with a ram-symbol on the bottom of the machine. open up and insert more memory
make sure that the system is powerless: remove ac-adapter and battery!
make also sure that the new ram modules meets the specifications.

upgrade the cpu: much more difficult and toshiba dont support this upgrade...
search for your modeltype with a bigger cpu and check if it has a socket (should be), this cpu should go together with your machine...

but remember: double the ram isnt that expensive than upgrade cpu and you have more fun with a bigger amount auf ram than a bit faster cpu....

Portege 3440 supports 64Mb of internal memory and this memory cannot be removed.
So only one slot is available.

As far as I know Toshiba recommends using these modules for an upgrade:

*SDRAM 64MB (PA3033U-1M06)*
*SDRAM 128MB (PA3034U-1M12)*

I think you could google for these single numbers and you should get a photo or all needed details about these modules?

Only the TRAD version of BIOS exists for this Port?g?.
This means that you will be not able to update it from running Windows OS but you will need an external floppy disk drive to perform such update.

Regarding your memory issue;
Check this:

There you can find the compatible memory module. It?s a 144-Pin PC100 SODIMM.

Just wanted to briefly report of a successful SSD upgrade.

When I got my Portege R930 (PT331E, i7) two years ago, I changed the HD to a Samsung SSD 840 PRO 512GB (big improvement). Now this SSD is too small (photos!) and I wanted to increase the capacity to 1TB.

But instead of a new SATA, I decided to go for an mSATA + SATA adapter – I got the impression an mSATA unit would be more “future-proof” – next laptop upgrade for me would be a Portege Z, which use mSATA.

So I bought a Samsung SSD 850 EVO mSATA 1TB together with a Delock converter/adapter, made a clone with the Apricorn cable and software, switched the SSDs and everything works just fine (actually a little bit faster )! At first I tried to make the clone with Samsungs migration software but that didn?t work, maybe I didn?t use the right version.

So – now I have a much lager SSD that will live longer than my R930. Please note that I am not a computer expert – just a happy Toshiba user!! Thanks for a good forum with my good ideas!

You could use an external USB CD/DVD drive in order to boot from Win 8 disks.

Or you will try to install the Win 8 using an USB flash memory sik.
But in order to be able to install the Win 8 from USB flash memory stick an Win 8 ISO (image) files is needed.
Additionally you have to create an bootable USB stick. You can do this using the ?Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool?

I recommend to use google for more details

Recently I acquired a 2008 vintage Toshiba R500-11Z ultraportable laptop. It needed a new keyboard since most of the keys were dead, so I purchased a new replacement (exact same keyboard, from an eBay seller). I also decided to give it a new lease of life by installing a solid-state drive. The old keyboard was secured to the chassis with some sort of sticky back plastic which wasn't reusable, so for the new keyboard I used some strong double sided tape. Before screwing the plastic undercarriage back on I installed Windows 7, with the undercarriage loosely fitted in place. Windows install completed and all looked good. After screwing in the undercarriage I discovered that the optical drive ?its original "open-top" Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-844S? would not read discs; it just makes a noise 3 times but does not then spin up as it would normally. Drive is visible in both Explorer and Device Manager.

After unscrewing the undercarriage, reseating the optical drive, and rescrewing a number of times I haven't been able to get the optical drive to read any discs. What I have established is that the disc must be catching on the ceiling, thus signalling the drive to not spin up; by leaving the screws off that side of the undercarriage allowed me to create a gap so there is more room between the optical drive and the ceiling of the laptop. Discs will then spin up and Windows autoplay will open them. What I can't work out is what has changed in terms of how the drive is mounted an... Read more

A:Portege R500- after hardware upgrade ODD will not read

Just to say after a lot of head scratching I worked out the problem. I'd made a mistake in reattaching the metal mounting clip to the back of the optical drive.

I'd screwed the clip on on the outside of the orange coloured connector when it needed to be on the inside (between the optical drive and the orange connector). It seems this must have pushed the drive out of place just enough to stop it from working properly.

I tried to upgrade the memory in my P3500.
currently there is 1 256MB module installed in the slot beneath the keyboard.

I purchased 2x 512MB SO-DIMM PC133 ram modules, but both lead to errors / BIOS-beeps. I tried different combinations:

keyboard-slot: 512
bottom-slot: empty
--> long short

keyboard-slot: empty
bottom-slot: 512
--> long short short

keyboard-slot: 512
bottom-slot: 256
--> long short

keyboard-slot: 256
bottom-slot: 512
--> long short short

keyboard-slot: 512
bottom-slot: 512
--> long short (pause) long short short

This sounds as if the bios refuses the 512mb modules
I guess the beeps mean:
long short - keyboard-slot ram refusal
long short short - bottom-slot ram refusal

but according to the manual it should be possible to install 1 or 2 512mb modules. What am I doing wrong?
Do I need a BIOS update? (currently installed: "ACPI BIOS 1.20")

If only a new BIOS supports 512mb modules - is there a possbility to upgrade the bios from unix?
(the only BIOS download I found on the Toshiba support pages unfortunately just works for windows)

Help would be much appreciated...

A:Portege 3500 - 512MB memory modules lead to error

Yes, you can upgrade your 3500 up to 1024 mb memory ( 2 x 512 mb ) but only with the right modules
You need *16 x 32 ( 16 chip architecture )* PC133 , 3,3v sdram modules ( 144 pins so-dimm )

I fear that your 512 mb modules are not compatible :-( you can count the chips on the module, there should be 8 chips on both sides of the module

I have finally decided to settle with XP rather than 2000. Whilst performance is slightly slower, support will be better.

Noticed that the internal wireless card is 802.11b which is slow. Can this be replaced with a newer one (n or g?) or are there motherboard limits? Is it safer/more advisable to buy an external wireless card. Can this go up to n or only g?

Will also have to buy a USB 2.0 pc card as this is only USB 1.1.

A:Portege 4000 - Can I upgrade WLAN card to Draft N?

You can not use Draft N because the 802.11 N needs 2 wires WLan antenna.
The older WLan standards use 2 wires antenna and I assume this oldie has been equipped also with 3 wires WLan antenna.

So theoretically only the 802.11 G WLan standard is possible.

As far as I know you will need a miniPCI Wlan card which supports the 802.11 standard.
So goggle for some options.

I'm having a few issues with my Portege 4000 at the moment. I installed XP on one disk, but will need more RAM as I only have 256MB...

- Have tried 2 manufacturers but the PC133 512 isn't compatible. However my system has an IBM chip of PC100 256 in it, which was bought at an earlier stage last year, after much trial and error, and I'm now wondering whether the motherboard will be more suited to PC100 rather than PC133?

- Am considering alternative options to XP, namely 98SE or 2000 as these are lighter operating systems. I can put this on an alternative (test) disk. Is it possible to set up a partition for the Recovery CD Rom (which has 98SE) on it and have some space left over for installing another Linux o/s or does its partition manager overwrite everything?

- I have put another post for .exe drivers relating to the display/vga for 98SE and 2000.

- Just fyi, not all Linux distros seem to pick up on the monitor size, so this takes some work...

Many Thanks for any help.

The Protege 4000 is compatible with PC133 modules! As far as I know you can upgrade this notebook's RAM to 1GB (1024MB) and you could use these modules;
PC133 512MB (PA3108U-1M51)
PC133 256MB (PA3086U-1M25)
PC133 128MB (PA3085U-1M12)

You could create some partitions on the HDD using an 3rd party tool like Partitions Magic 8. I use this tool and it's really nice.
After you have created 2 or three partitions on the HDD, you could install different OS (operating systems.)

I upgraded my *portege M800* bought in *Canada* to *Windows 7 64 bit*.
Everything is right excepted the keyboard. it's a canadian bilingual keyboard with 86 keys with 13 function keys and a console buttons with 6 keys(mute, cd/dvd, play, stop, previous, next).
I didn't update any drivers because it works fine with Windows 7 drivers.

The problem is:
- the hot keys (Fn + ..) don't work anymore
- the console buttons with the 6 keys (play, pause, etc) don't work anymore

What I did:
- checked the driver of the keyboard in the device manager: its a microsoft driver
- tried to update it with a toshiba driver but *I didn't find it in the driver list for windows 7 or vista on the toshiba website*: []

So, I don't know if it's a driver problem or anything else???

A:Portege M800 - After Windows 7 upgrade the FN keys don't work anymore

These special functions of FN keys and multimedia buttons have nothing to do with the keyboard driver. Furthermore for the keyboard there is no driver update. There is only the Windows standard driver that can be used.

The point is that you need Toshiba Value Added Package and Flash Cards Support Utility. If you have bought the M800 in Canada, I assume it?s a Canadian model and therefore you can download all drivers here:

Just got my Z10T and decided to upgrade to Win10. Problem is the Win10 upgrade hung and now I can't fix Win10.

Nor can I restore Win 8.1 from SSD recovery partition or from USB recovery image I made before trying Win10 upgrade.

So, I am hoping that someone can throw me a lifeline, otherwise I have a very expensive ultrabook that I can't use at all.

I have successfully upgraded my Z830 to windows 10, but some Toshiba utilities don't work e.g. Fn key with top row of F1-12 and keyboard illumination. Does anyone know if Toshiba ill provide windows 10 drivers for this model, as they have for Z930? Or is there a way to use another set of drivers? I wouldn't have thought there was a lot of difference between the two models.

If not, I don't think the upgrade assistant can access the Internet.

Or your Firewall/Antivirus is blocking the Upgrade Assistant. Uninstall it first before upgrading.

Just few questions:
Have you upgraded original Vista version hat you got with your notebook or you have installed clean Win7 version?
Are all hardware components properly installed and listed in device manager?
How do you test mic functionality?
Is Microphone listed in sound properties > Recording devices?
Is mic set as default device?

After many months biding my time I have just embarked upon upgrading my Portege Z930-11G to Windows 8 Pro.

Largely this has gone to plan with the exception that after running the Toshiba Upgrade Assistant I've lost the Fn key display and about half the keys no longer seem to function at all.

The only key I ever used routinely is the Fn+F8 option to turn WiFi on/off.

So now I cannot enable the WiFi on the machine.

There must, surely, be a mean to do this but I can't find it. Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm OK for now as I have a wired LAN in the house but once I get out on the road I'm going to struggle without WiFi.

Before running the upgrade assistant the Fn key brought the key display up across the top of the screen and I surely wish I'd turned WiFi on at that point.

The Fn key utility offers very little control of the Fn keys. It does not offer the ability to do anything other than disable five on screen notifications for keyboard backlight, power plan, touch pad, cursor overlay and numeric overlay.

All help gratefully received.

A:Portege Z930: Loss of Fn keys after Win 8 upgrade - cannot turn WiFi on/off

> So now I cannot enable the WiFi on the machine.
First of all you can enable and disable the WiFi using function key but you can also enable the WLan in Windows 8 settings
Win key + C -> Settings -> Change PC settings -> Wireless

Now you can use the wireless devices slider to enable or disable the WLan.

But to get the FN key working you have to install the +Toshiba Function Key Utility+ for Win 8 and +Toshiba System Driver+ for Win 8

Quick question - will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

Layout looks similar; albeit a different colour.

A:Will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

I think you cannot use the same keyboard because the Portege S100 supports the an-easy-to-use 84-key (US) or 85-key (UK) keyboard and the Portege M100 supports the an-easy-to-use 85/86-key keyboard.
Furthermore the connector of the S100 supports the CN3230 keyboard interface 34 pin connector and the M100 supports the PJ3230 keyboard 34pin connector.

So possibly this could be a problem.
I recommend using the original keyboards released for the each notebook model.

I have an old Portege 7200, Pentium III, 600 MHZ, 320 MB RAM.

I am using Windows 2000, still stable and well running (You know, never touch a running system....)

However, due to new software that don't run with Win2000 (e.g. Internet Explorer, Anti-Virus, Video-Cam-Software and some more) I need an OS-Update. I have an old WinXP-Licence (SP 2) and have the idea to install WinXP on that Laptop.

The System power should be appropriate, however, I haven't found someone with WinXP on that Laptop. Has anyone experience with that? Does it work? Do I have to do a BIOS-Update? I have version 1.80 and found here in the support-side a zip-file for 2.0

Many thanks in advance - Andreas

A:Portege 7200 CT - Can I install Windows Xp instead of Windows 2000?

Hi Andreas,

Theoretically you can install what you want on your notebook but I have checked the Toshiba website and it seems that for Portege 7200 are no XP drivers available.
What does this mean? Well, you can install XP but if you drivers you have to collect these drivers on external websites, like Intel or Realtek. Maybe you will find all drivers what you need.

In my opinion the BIOS update should only be one if it?s necessary. That means if the notebook works good, this update isn?t necessary.

I hope I could help you a little bit. :)

At the time I had 1 GB in one of 3 available slots. I attempted to add 2 GB more to occupy all 3 slots. This produced a reboot after POST as VISTA started. I rotated the the modules through all slots and finally realized that when I went beyond 2 GB it produced a reboot. During post it tests 3 GB and the BIOS displays 3 GB. I have 512MB of RAM on the video card. Any suggestions ?? I am running the latest BIOS and if I remove one GB the machine boots and runs great... ???? Ron

I want to upgrade the memory of one of the pc's in our house. I get low memory alerts often and I can't delete much else to create room. I have never opened up a pc before, and I don't want to screw up and make things worse. The pc in question is a HP Pavilion a1150Y with a Intel Pentium 4 (3.00 GHz). OS is Windows XP SP2. It came with 512MB RAM and I would like to go up 2GB. I went to, ran the system scan, and it says that this type of memory can go into that pc: "DDRII memory with support for DDR2 PC2-4200,DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-8500 speeds." I don't know what speed I should be installing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello together !

For your information:

Did a memory upgrade today at 2 Toshiba Satellite Pro 2100 (1,9 GH, 256 MB DDR-RAM originally), both up to 1 GB, all fine and not problems.

Just wanted to end rumours about "only 512 MB all together" or even less.

If searching for it, remember to think of the specifications:

DDR-266 (PC2100)
200 PIN
CL 2.5

concerning RAM frequency, building form etc.

P.S.: Don`t think a discussion is necessary, thread could therefore be closed...

A:Can I upgrade Office 2000 to Office XP, while still running Windows 2000?

Office XP can run on Windows 2000. Even though the operating systems and office suites have the same naming convention, that doesn't mean that they have to match up (Windows 2000-Office 2000, Windows XP-Office XP).

I bought the upgrade from 7 to 8 during the promotional offer in early 2013, but until now I was waiting for a better moment to perform the upgrade. I'm trying to do the upgrade having prepared a USB pen with the ISO I downloaded in 2013.

However, after 20 minutes of work, around 99% it says that the Upgrade was unsuccessful.

I've read somewhere that it could be because of the recovery partition of my Portege.

Does anyone have faced similar problems?
Please, consider that I'm trying to perform an upgrade, instead of a clean install.

ps and probably OT: does anyone know if it is possible to obtain the ISO of 8.1 having the 8 with an activation code?

A:Portege Z930 - Upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro

As I’m not mistaken the Portege Z930 was sold with a preinstalled Windows 7 but the additional Windows 8 DVD should be part of the package.

Anyway, I found an useful page which provides you different information how to upgrade the system to Windows 8.

Your notebook can handle with 4GB of RAM and I recommend you to use 2 x 2GB module.
Compatible 2 GB module has part number PA3513U-1M2G or Kingston KTT667D2/2G.

Put the part umber in Google and you will find a place where you can order it in your country.

Hiya and welcome

First off, lets take a look at a log, as it may show something that may be causing this:

go to , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Also, is this happening on or offline? I assume that as you're on 2000, you may have a cable modem, so it'll be hard to tell, apart from disconnecting it.

Also, which version of Service Pack have you installed? The latest one may address this, as I'm on SP4.

Hey there everyone,

We're about to start work on migrating our domain controllers over from NT 4.0 to Windows 2000.
One thing I'm wondering about is:
Our network is trusted by one of our customers, and as it stands, our WINS information is drawn from their WINS server.
Now with 2000 and Active Directory, which as I understand is DNS-based, will there be a problem with the curent setup as far as WINS information is concerned?
What I mean is, will the 2000 servers still be able to pull the WINS information from the other company, or will this effectively terminate any WINS communication to us?
If it will, is there any way of working around this to keep the WINS communication open?
