No Secure Boot Option on Portege Z930-138

Q: No Secure Boot Option on Portege Z930-138

My daughter was using the above PC the other day, when suddenly it would no longer boot.

I've now tried to do a system restore to a backup I did a few weeks ago, but the system is reporting that the computer is using BIOS, but the backup was done with EFI

Unfortunately, on the bios settings page, I don't have secure boot listed under security.
In addition, on the system configuration page, the computer is listing the BIOS as being CSM mode.

Worse, there is no option to change that mode, as I can't select that entry.

I've now cleaned my hard disk partition, and done a system restore from the recovery media I created, but it still hasn't helped.

This poster [has a similar problem it appears|http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=311568&#311568]

How can I reenable UEFI Boot/Secure boot? There must be a way.
I spent an hour on the phone with "Toshiba Expert Care", and they've now suggested I have a hardware fault.
I'd happily replace the SSD, if I thought that would fix the problem, but it looks like the problem is elsewhere.

A: No Secure Boot Option on Portege Z930-138

Furthermore, If I choose Refresh my PC after booting to my recovery stick, I get
"The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again"

The drive can be read when booting to a command prompt, so I'm not sure which drive is being referred to here.

Hi,

I have a Portege Z930 laptop with an SSD drive. Recently it would not boot into Windows 7. It just hangs at the "Starting Windows" screen.

I removed the hard drive and connected it to another computer via USB. This was ok, i could see all the files, so i formatted it and put it back into the laptop.

When i boot it up now is still hangs at "Starting Windows. This is confussing, as the hard drive has been formatted, and has nothing on it.

Any help please.
Thanks

My Toshiba Portege Z930-108 laptop has stopped to boot with any RAM module installed in socket.

If I remove RAM module, laptop boots and works fine, but if I install any RAM module (original 4Gb 1600 or a new 4G 1600 CL9 or 8G 1600 CL11) computer cannot boot.

The screen stays black and power led is blinking two green and two orange, and some seconds after, 3G indicator also on in blue.

This is the only problem that I have with this computer, but it's strange.

I have updated BIOS to last version and problem is not solved.

I have tried to reset hardware (http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB3B03J90000R01.htm), also I have tried to reset hardware with power button pressed 30 seconds without battery but no success.

Any idea about this strage problem?

Regards,
Lito.

A:Portege Z930 can not boot with RAM module installed

I guess you used wrong or not fully compatible RAM modules.
This is only one plausible explanation.

I would recommend you to order the RAM modules recommended by Toshiba which are:

4GB DDR3-1600 PA5037U-1M4G

2GB DDR3-1600 PA5037U-1M2G

Hello!

I have a Toshiba Portege Z930-D3S laptop. I wanted to run a system recovery and did everything exactly as in the manual http://forums.toshiba.com/tshb/attac.../1/Z930_EN.pdf page 4-24, Section System recovery Options. The tool told me that the recovery partition is empty (or something like this) and the recovery cannot be performed. I definitely did not erase it and do not how it can be. Then there was an option to erase sdd and I thought that this might help (don't ask me why) and that the tool would erase everything but the recovery partition. So, I chose it.

Now I have the frozen screen with "Toshiba Leading Innovation" and cannot enter any menu neither by pressing 0, nor by holding F8. I cannon restart the laptop, it seems that it simply fall asleep when I press the power button.

Please, help me to recover the system.

Hi there,

Anyone have tryed to upgrade Z930's SSD?
Looking for some info, they appear to use mSATA interface - mini PCI-E like conectors.

Any specific information about the disk inside?

I'm planning to put this beauty on the machine:
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=6509

Thanks,

A:SSD Upgrade for Portege Z930

The mSATA connector looks very similar to miniPCI connector but they are totally different.
So your only solution is to replace the HDD with a 2.5" SATA SSD.

I have a Portege Z930 ultrabook. A day or two back the display suddenly appeared to be permanently off. However, if I look carefully I can see that the image is there but VERY, VERY dimly. It is as if the light has been turned off (although since the screen is LED that will not be the case).

I was able to source a replacement screen but that made no difference.

The video card on the motherboard is working - at least to the extent that I can plug in an external monitor and see everything correctly.

I'm wondering if a hardware switch has inadvertently been triggered and I'm missing the setting. Or I suppose it could be a witch which turns the display off when the lid is closed which has become faulty...

The Z930 has been running Windows 8.1 very happily for the past year or so.

I'm hoping that there will be something simple rather than a motherboard failure...

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Andrew

A:Portege Z930 - Display has become very dim

In my opinion it is hardware related issue and has nothing to do with settings.
In the past we have had many threads with the same or similar problems and describes issue was related to the defective FL inverter.

Have you already spoken with Toshiba service?

Hi,

In the bios boot menu, I can't find anything related to external CD room. From the list, I have only 3 things.

HDD/SDD
FDD

How I suppose to boot from the external DVD room that came with the laptop?

The part-no of the model is PST4EL-00t00G. I have checked the latest BIOS for this model but it seems there is no update of this BIOS.

Thank you.

Have you bought already used T230 and this external device was part of the package?
When you start T230 and press F12 to enter boot menu are the same devices listed as bootable devices?

To be honest it is a bit confusing because you should be able to create USB recovery stick and use USB port as bootable device (user?s manuals page 29).

Hi

I assume you cannot use them if you have not external CD/DVD drive?

Maybe you could borrow such drive from a friend?

Otherwise try to copy the content of the disk to a USB flash memory stick and then try to boot from the stick.
But to be honest, I?m not quite sure it this would functions.

Hi,

I recently bought a Z930 laptop, and I was thinking on upgrading the RAM memory.

I wanted to buy a 8gb DIMM, but I noticed on the specs that the maximum memory allowed is 6 gb (that means a 4gb DIMM + 2gb on the motherboard). Is this a motherboard restriction or similar? If not, would the laptop run with 10gb of memory?

Thanks!

A:Portege Z930-10E - Memory upgrade

The max says 4GB but you may be able to get an 8GB module working if it's decent RAM that has the correct channels. But if something goes wrong and damages the mainboard I doubt Toshiba would repair it under warranty, so I think the best thing to do is stick with the recommended maximum. 6GB is plenty anyway unless you are doing heavy graphical/media creation.

*Solved the issue.*

Just do the changes in BIOS.
Restart and wait till you got the message: restore to the factory setting.

Chose this option, put the DVD1 with W8 from Toshiba in the external ODD and follow the onscreen advices. Just one will be, with changing the DVD1 with the second one.

That is it. You have W8.

When i stopped using it, i noticed that the function key for display brightness wasn't working. When i pressed fn key and f6 or f7, brightness setting came up but i could change the brightness. All other fn key related operations were fine. I saw some online forums for this problem and followed their recommendation around upgrading diplay driver and value added pack from the UK support website of Toshiba. Also clicked on restart flash cards. Nothing seems to have worked and now the fn key itself has stopped working i.e., nothing happens when i press fn key and i cannot perform any operations using fn key. Please suggest what could be a solution to this problem. Thanks.

Hi,

I have a Portege Z930-14L with 8GB memory and wonder what is the maximal memory I can add ? I saw the following in the description, but I don't understand if that means the maximum is 12GB(4GB onboard + 8GB expansion) or 16GB ( 2x8GB)

System memory standard : 8,192 (4,069 onboard + 4,069) MB
maximum expandability : 8,192 MB
technology : DDR3 RAM (1,600 MHz)

Thank you
Markus

A:Maximum memory for Portege Z930-14L

If I understand this info right your Portege has already maximum RAM.
Fact is that your Portege notebook can handle with max 8GB memory. ON board there are already 4GB and there is only one RAM slot available for upgrade that also contains one 4GB RAM module.
With other words your notebook has already maximum RAM and upgrade is not possible.

You could use an external USB CD/DVD drive in order to boot from Win 8 disks.

Or you will try to install the Win 8 using an USB flash memory sik.
But in order to be able to install the Win 8 from USB flash memory stick an Win 8 ISO (image) files is needed.
Additionally you have to create an bootable USB stick. You can do this using the ?Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool?

I recommend to use google for more details

Hi

Toshiba Portege Z930-108 PT235E
Windows 7 Professional SP1

I'm new to forums so please forgive me if I don't give enough information! I have two issues with my Portege Z930 that have been bugging me for months, if not longer. The first, and more longstanding issue is with the touchpad. Every so often it disables itself for no reason, and without warning. I quickly learned to press Function F9 and it comes back on again.

However, recently it was becoming more and more common (every couple of minutes) which led me to reinstall back to factory settings. Since then, it has been disabling a lot less frequently (once every few hours) but it still does it!

The other issue is with the device disconnect sound. This keeps on playing regardless of whether I have anything connected or not.
It was driving me crazy until I learned I could simply disable the sound effect which I have done (but clearly this is not a solution).
was hoping that this would be cleared up by the restoring of Window 7 to factory settings but if anything, its been worse since.

This has been going on for a few months now and I have tried everything I've read (although I'm not that tech literate so I may not have understood a lot of what I've read!).

I've looked in event viewer but there doesn't seem to be a record of anything happening when the noise occurs. In device manager, the screen does seem to refresh shortly after the noise but there's no way of knowing which device is causing ... Read more

Hello,

after 3yrs without problems the SSD in my Portege Z930-108 crashed. I could still copy the D partition (HDDRecovery) but no system or data partition.
When substituting the SSD with a newer version (Samsung 850 EVO) the right screw (Z930 oriented bottom up and sound connectors to the right) accidentially droped on the main board just next to the SSD. There was a short blue flash and afterwards the batteries do not seem to work any more. The system is running plugged into net without problems but no buffering by batteries happens any more.
Do I have to exchange the whole mainboard or is there some work around possible?

Second is there a way to recover the original drivers/system from the copied D partition without a Toshiba Recovery wizard or is there a download of this wizard?

Thanks for any comments and help

31.Oct.2012 we purchased Portege Z930-G1S (PT234R) - quite an expensive notebook with Win7 Home Premium OS.

We thought we are entitled to Win8 discounted upgrade, but as we entered our data on Microsoft site - they told us we're not entitled.

We tried to reach Toshiba support in Russia - http://ru.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/contact_toshiba.jsp
Several times over a month.

But all the mails are returning with "invalid recepient address" error.

How can it be that official Toshiba support site enlists invalid blacklisted address ?
How can it be that recent and quite expensive Toshiba notebook is not subject to Windows 8 upgrade program ?

Hi

Please check this page how to upgrade to from Win 7 to Win 8:

The point is that you have to order Windows 8 from Microsoft and install it.

My TOSHIBA (ex-laptop) Portege(Z930) board burned out with hot water. I removed the tiny SSD and now need to transfer the data with a USB to another PC.

I borrowed from a friend a SATA to USB adapter with 2 interfaces and even the small connectors for SATA was not small enough for TOSHIBA's SSD. Apparently I need a special SATA to USB adapter which fits to TOSHIBA Portege's mSata.

The reason I wrote here is because there are many SATA USB adapters in internet advertised but it seems they have bigger connectors. So TOSHIBA calls the SSD mSATA labeled on it, but many people call mSATA for one size bigger SSD.

I don't want to order something doesn't fit again. Is there anyone who already removed SSD from Portege?
Could you provide me a link for such adapter?

A:Portege Z930 - need external controller for internal SSD drive

The notebook was equipped with an HM77 Intel Panther Point chip and with the launch of this chip Intel allowed the notebook manufacturers to integrate the mSATA (micro SATA) SSD form factor.

There is also an difference between the mSATA form factors?
Since the mSATA is limited to four (NAND) chips only, Intel has developed a new standard of mSATA which is called m.2 or mSATA2.

In many cases this is called also NGFF (New Generation Form Factor)
This m.2 standard is longer and has a lower profile?

I'm not quite sure if this Portege Z930 supports mSATA or mSATA2 but you check the internal SSD drive where this information should be available

Hi

If you use Win8.1 you can use Functional kez on two ways and change two modes:
-special function mode
-standard F1-F12 mode

There is one difference. When you use special function mode you can use F keys only. With standard mode you must use FN+Fx key combination.

Flash cards that you can see at the top of the screen works with Vista or Win7 only. As far as I know since Win8 flash cards are not shown on the top of the screen anymore.

I have the laptop since July 2013. At the beginning I had a good autonomy, the battery was lasting 6 hours, which with time diminished to something like 4 hours.
Now, I've been using the laptop plugged for some time, and I discovered a week ago that I have a huge capacity loss, around 55%. The strange thing is that this got much worse in few days, and now the loss is at 77%.

Besides buying a new battery (which I will do in the future - btw, any tutorial on how to change it?), what can I do? this loss of capacity is permanent? I've been measuring it with an acpi tool.

Very disappointed with the response from Toshiba over an issue we are having with the Z Series laptops.

Let me explain - I am responsible for the laptops at a large college in the south of the UK. We have round 40 Series laptops and on a large number of them the screws which hold he hinge covers in place have come out and become lost, in many cases the hinge covers have come off and been lost as well. The first thing that crossed out minds was 'interference' by students but as no other screws were found to be lose the only conclusion we can come to is that that there is a design fault and these hinge cover screws have worked lose over time and fallen out.

I am currently working through all our Z Series laptops and I am finding more and more lose or missing screws and additional missing hinge covers. We have bought this to the attention of Toshiba but they will not accept there is an issue - but haven't yet provided a reason why this should be happening in such numbers.

As can be imagined we are not best pleased with their response and would like to hear from anyone who has had the same issue. At over 50.00 GBP to fix each pair of hinges, you can imagine how quickly the costs are rising.

After many months biding my time I have just embarked upon upgrading my Portege Z930-11G to Windows 8 Pro.

Largely this has gone to plan with the exception that after running the Toshiba Upgrade Assistant I've lost the Fn key display and about half the keys no longer seem to function at all.

The only key I ever used routinely is the Fn+F8 option to turn WiFi on/off.

So now I cannot enable the WiFi on the machine.

There must, surely, be a mean to do this but I can't find it. Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm OK for now as I have a wired LAN in the house but once I get out on the road I'm going to struggle without WiFi.

Before running the upgrade assistant the Fn key brought the key display up across the top of the screen and I surely wish I'd turned WiFi on at that point.

The Fn key utility offers very little control of the Fn keys. It does not offer the ability to do anything other than disable five on screen notifications for keyboard backlight, power plan, touch pad, cursor overlay and numeric overlay.

All help gratefully received.

A:Portege Z930: Loss of Fn keys after Win 8 upgrade - cannot turn WiFi on/off

First of all you can enable and disable the WiFi using function key but you can also enable the WLan in Windows 8 settings
Win key + C -> Settings -> Change PC settings -> Wireless

Now you can use the wireless devices slider to enable or disable the WLan.

But to get the FN key working you have to install the +Toshiba Function Key Utility+ for Win 8 and +Toshiba System Driver+ for Win 8

Hi,

I have toshiba portege Z930 and my function keys worked until I have installed YAC (Yet another cleaner) to get rid of some malware, that worked, but the problem is that even after uninstalation, function keys got broken:

FN + y/z which should highlith the keyboard is not working (I've installed something called "Function Key" so that works for now, as well with FN 1,FN 3,FN 4, and 3+4 for volume)

but others doesn't simply work:
FN + ESC (mute)
FN + F2 (eco mode)
FN + F5 (monitor switch)
FN + F8 (wifi/bluetooth switch
FN + F9-12

Could anybody point me to right drivers for that? Thanks a lot
Karolina

A:Portege Z930 - FN keys Issue - not showing menu on a screen

What Windows system is installed?
In case of Windows 7 you must install Toshiba Value Added Package
In case of Win 8.1 you need to install the Toshiba System settings.

But note: some FN key functionality depends on the 3rd software. For example you will not be able to use the FN+F2 eco mode if ECO Utility isn?t installed.

But why you don?t set the OS back to early time point before you used the cleaner tool?

Hello
I have a toshiba portege z930 pt234e With Windows 7 Professional
I connected the external optical drive and was running fine
But when I installed the Toshiba Recovery Media Creator, the external optical drive disappeared
When I open the Toshiba Recovery Media Creator, Shows, No HDD Recovery Area!
I want to make a Recovery disk of the system

A:Portege Z930 - Toshiba Recovery Media Creator issue

Hi

The Recovery Media Creator is an Toshiba tool which requires the Toshiba image files in order to create the recovery disk. The image files are placed on a different partition called HDD recovery partition.

If the HDD has been modified or this partition deleted, the recovery media creator will not be able to find the image files and you will not be able to create such disk.

So my question is: did you reinstall the Win 7 at your own hand? Did you modify the HDD in the past?

Hello,

I used Toshiba Recovery Media Creator to create 2 recovery media on USB flash drive for my Z930-10P. Then I removed all partitions from the computers SSD. The problem is that the recovery process won't work. This happens:

1. 'Windows is loading files' is displayed on the screen
2. 'Starting Windows' and the Windows 7 animation logo is displayed.
3. Then the marker is shown for a couple of seconds before...
4. An error message *ERROR : F3-F100-0008* is displayed with the instruction 'Please press OK to turn off the computer.'

I have tried both USB flash drives. What does this error mean?

A:Portege Z930-10P - Recovery media ERROR : F3-F100-0008

Unfortunately I don?t know what this error code exactly mans but on different forums people speculate about some HDD, memory or recovery image failure.

In your situation proper answer will not help at all. Problem is that you cannot use created recovery USB sticks and at the same time you?ve made biggest mistake and removed recovery image saved on the SSD. Now it is not possible to start HDD/SSD recovery image installation.

Question is: what you can do now? You can try to contact nearest Toshiba service provider, explain the situation and ask for help or good advice. Other way you must order original recovery installation disc for recovery image installation.

I bought the upgrade from 7 to 8 during the promotional offer in early 2013, but until now I was waiting for a better moment to perform the upgrade. I'm trying to do the upgrade having prepared a USB pen with the ISO I downloaded in 2013.

However, after 20 minutes of work, around 99% it says that the Upgrade was unsuccessful.

I've read somewhere that it could be because of the recovery partition of my Portege.

Does anyone have faced similar problems?
Please, consider that I'm trying to perform an upgrade, instead of a clean install.

Thanks

A:Portege Z930 - Upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro

As I’m not mistaken the Portege Z930 was sold with a preinstalled Windows 7 but the additional Windows 8 DVD should be part of the package.

Didn’t you get such Windows 8 DVD medium?

Anyway, I found an useful page which provides you different information how to upgrade the system to Windows 8.

Hi

Hope someone can help me please.

I have a friends Toshiba Z930 Ultra book.

When you boot the laptop it does not boot but comes up with the meesage PXE-E61 : Media Test Failure.

This is a Windows 8 Laptop 3rd Gen i7.

I can boot from HIREN's and the Hard Drive is found and is selectable and all files appear to be intact.

I have gone into the BIOS and discovered that Boot mode is set at CSM Mode.
However Windows 8 requires the boot mode to be UEFI.

I can not find how to change the Boot Mode from CSM to UEFI.
The option is greyed out and can not be selected.

Help
Please

A:Satellite Z930 - Boot mode set to CSM Boot and Greyed Out

Try load setup defaults. I'm not aware if Z930 has UEFI Support but I guess. Mabye there is some kind of superuserpassword you haven't entered to gain full access to bios functions.

The failure is about LAN/PXE Boot, nothing to worry about.

Win8 doesn't essentially requiere UEFI. it also works with CSM, but may need other bootloader and BCD container to run current installation.

Hi,
Can anybody let me know if the Portege 4000 Mini wireless card will support WPA? I've tried the Cisco and Lucent drivers on the Toshiba website with no joy and I'm up to date with XP, SP2 etc. The card works okay with an open wireless link.
Thanks

A:Portege 4000 running XP Pro SP2, no WPA option with Wireless

Hi Charlie

As far as I know this oldie, Port?g? 4000, was equipped with the Wireless LAN ORiNOCO (Agere) card.
According to the user manual the Wlan card supports only Wired Equivalent Privacy (short WEP) data encryption.
So I doubt the WPA would be available.

Maybe you could switch to an external USB WLan stick which supports both encryptions.

rdubayah,
If your computer was running WIndows 10 without any issues prior to downloading the Anniversary update, then you would not have had to change any settings in the bios to install the update. The UEFI and Secure Boot settings are to enable booting with a USB or DVD to install Windows.
Disable Legacy Boot Mode and Enable UEFI
Start the computer and TAP the F2 key to enter the bios. Once in the bios Press F9 to Restore the bios to the Default Settings. F10 to save changes and exit. You could have a hardware problem. To run a hardare diagnostics on the computer you would start the computer and TAP the F5 key. Insert a cd/dvd in the optical drive for running the diags.

Microsoft has been attempting to patch a serious Secure Boot vulnerability that can be exploited to bypass the security feature and install rootkits and bootkits on Windows devices. Researchers believe the security flaw cannot be fully patched.

-

On systems where Secure Boot is locked down and cannot be disabled (e.g. Windows RT, HoloLens, Windows Phone), configuration changes can be made using policies, signed files loaded by the boot manager (bootmgr) from a UEFI variable. There are some boot loader executables (EFI files) signed by Microsoft that can be used to provision such policies.

Before loading a policy, bootmgr checks it to make sure it?s valid. However, researchers discovered that Microsoft introduced a new type of Secure Boot policy during the development of Windows 10 Anniversary Update (v1607) that can be abused to bypass the security feature.

I've never understood this and never will...but how in the world is administrators having the option to enable a system policy to require users to press ctrl+alt+del before logging in making the system more secure??? It doesn't make it harder for hackers to brute force an account, that's what the lockout policy is for, and last I checked the only people that measure does keep out is people who have trouble using a keyboard (which most certainly excludes people who are looking to cause trouble on the computer) so why in the world was that ever implemented and for that matter, kept in the OSes all the way from NT to 2000 to XP???

Hi

I have been issued a trial Toshiba Z30-C-10N to test our image deployment with. We use SCCM via PXE boot to deploy our images but unfortunately the laptop cannot boot from PXE even after trying various boot methods (Secure boot is disabled). After doing some googling a lot of people are saying that CSM boot mode is needed, but this is not available in the current BIOS on the Z30-C.

So I'm just wondering are there any plans to release a BIOS update soon with added CSM boot support?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey,
I have a HP Pavilion notebook. A bit older I think. It had built in windows Vista Home Premium. Somehow my hard disk crashed and I bought a new one. I installed windows 7 ultimate 32 bit and updated to service pack 1. I made a system image using windows default recovery console. Everything was fine. But today I needed to restore my computer to a previous restore point. Every time I press F8 to get to the advanced boot option I see everything is okay except the "repair your computer" option. Somehow the "repair your computer" option disappeared. I tried ctrl+F11 button and the F11 button too. F11 button worked for my previous vista home premium but for Win-7 it's the F8 key. Can anyone help me with this please? How may I get the "repair your computer" option back? Is there any way to edit advanced to boot option to get that option back? I would be needing it in case of system image recovery. Please I don't want to reinstall the O/S once again. Please somebody help me.

A:Advanced boot option doesn't show the option "repair your computer"!

On my clean OS install, the "repair your computer" option also does not appear in the F8 Advanced Boot Options list.
The option does appear on my ACER PC.

You can access this option by booting from a System Repair CD/DVD. A system repair CD is a must have.

Hi,

I've got an Portege A200 which is only a couple of years old but the hard drive no longer works. Initially I thought this was due to corrupting the boot record on the drive but after attempting to replace the hard drive (with two different drives) it is showing an IDE #0 error upon boot. I have therefore come to the conclusion the IDE controller chip has died.

In order to get the latop working I burned a cd with the ubunto ISO. This boots ok but due to only have 512Mb RAM the system is somewhat limited and anything installed is lost everytime I reboot.

I have now bought a 2Gb flash drive and installed ubuntu onto this. My next problem is that there appears to be no boot from USB HDD or USB Memory Stick option in the bios.

The possible options that I can think of are:
1) Upgade the bios so it supports boot from memory stick (although no HDD so not sure how I could reflash the BIOS or if there is even a BIOS upgrade that would support this functionality)
2) Create a cd which starts the boot process then tells the system to continue booting from the usb drive (Is this possible and does anyone know where I might be able to obtain such software)
3) Boot from CD but use the USB to retain any information saved / any installs etc (I guess similar to option 2 except the cd would manage the whole OS and the USB would just hold 'additional' information)

If there are any other options that anyone can think of I am happy to give them a go. Seems a shame to have to c... Read more

A:How Can I boot from USB - Portege A200

Hi

First of all I have to say that it?s not possible to boot from the external USB device like the USB stick, USB CD/DVD drive or USB HDD.
It?s possible only to boot from the external USB FDD (diskette) drive?

However, not the booting possibilities are clear but I think you have misunderstood the IDE#0 error message. In m opinion the IDE controller is not faulty but only the new HDD is not compatible and not recognized by BIOS.

There are different reasons for this issue?
Mostly this error message appears if the HDD master/slave/c-sel settings are not correct.
Usually such settings don?t need to be changed or switched on 2.5? HDDs but some HDDs support an jumper which must be set in the right position. But I don?t if your HDD supports this?

Furthermore the not compatible HDD size could be the reason for such error messages!
So finally I would recommend contacting the ASP in your country to get a new, compatible HDD and to check if the same error persists.

Good luck

Hello,

I have recently acquired the above notebook. I decided I would try to rebuild it, bad idea.
I don't have an external CD-ROM or the recovery CD's. I do however have another laptop and a Windows XP CD.

I removed the HDD from the 3500 and put it in my other laptop. I formatted the drive and installed windows. All worked Ok and boots fine in my other laptop. When I put the drive back in the 3500 however, it will not boot. All I see is a blank black screen, not even a cursor or any errors.

I have tried formatting the drive again and sys'ing it, this does not work. I tried starting the install of on my other laptop then continuing on the 3500 but that does not work either.

I was wondering if the 3500 was looking for a partition that I have deleted. I can't think why it will not boot when the HDD will boot ok in my other laptop.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
Simon

A:Portege 3500 will not boot from HDD

I don't think this has anything to do with the partition. You get the black screen because the other laptop is quite different installed regarding Windows ACPI etc.
If you have a usb floppy drive try this:
1. Partition and format the HDD with Fat32 (or fat 16).
2. From your installation CD copy the i386 directory to the partition (attach the HDD to the other laptop)
3. Start the P3500 from a DOS bootable floppy, change to the I386 directory and start the winnt.exe

Hi guys, hope someone can help me.

I've recently been given a Portege S100 with a non functioning DVD drive.
I swapped out the drive with a working one but still no joy.

I have been informed that this probably means that the problem is with the motherboard, and its not really worth replacing it on such an old model.

The person who gave me the laptop did say that the rest of it is fully functional.

However, my main problem is that the laptop was supplied with no OS on the HDD.

I have got the original Toshiba installation DVD but of course I can't boot from it as the DVD drive doesn't work. Is it possible to boot from an external USB drive on this model?

I looked at the boot order in the bios and I can't see an option for it but I could be mistaken.
I don't want to splash out on a new USB drive if there is no hope of the Portege recognising it.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi

I upgraded my Portege R30-A to add a second SSD (Crucial M550) replacing the optical drive with the new SSD with caddy.

But now the system won't boot automatically from the original SSD.

I could press F12 while turning on my laptop, and bring up the boot manual. Here I can see my original SSD and I can boot from it correctly.

In the boot order in the BIOS, I only see HDD/SSD, USB Memory, ODD .... It doesn't give me the option to choose between SSDs.

Anyway when I boot in this way I get blue screens after a while in win7.

I have tried to instal a HDD as the second disc instead os SSD and the resut is the same.

Is there anything I can do to solve this, now I have to use the second disc as an external USB disc.

Thanks,

A:Portege R30 won't boot from SSD after upgrade to SSD and HDD

Hi

Such ODD to SSD/HDD replacement is not always possible and in many cases the BIOS will not handle and will not recognize the new HDD properly.

As far as I can remember some older Toshiba Tecra and Portege notebooks which supported the Slim Select Bay feature were able to handle 2nd HDD instead of ODD drive but this was possible due to available slim select bay.

In your case it looks like the notebook as well as the BIOS does not support such feature and therefore the additional SSD/HDD isn?t recognized properly.

Try downloading Fedora Linux iso, and burn that image to a CD. Boot with it, and when it comes to its desktop, you will see all your hard drives. IF the CD won't boot, then its a machine problem. If the hd doesnt show up, then we know it is a hd problem. If the hd does show up, you can copy out all your data onto a usb memory stick.

I've been given a Portege 3440CT by a former colleague. It runs Windows 2000. She hasn't used it in more than 5 years and can't remember what her password was. I've tried logging in as Administrator with a blank password, but the password hasn't been left blank (grr) so basically I can't get past the password prompt.

Shouldn't be a problem - there are plenty of password recovery tools on the internet. I made a floppy disk using this one here: http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/ with the intention of booting from the floppy disk - there is an external Toshiba-branded USB floppy drive.

HOWEVER: the Portege obstinately refuses to do that. The boot order is set to try FDD before any other options; I tell it manually to boot from floppy; all it does is ignore me and boot Win2K from the hard disk. Would be very thankful for any ideas!

I don't have:
a CD or DVD drive for the laptop;
a network or internet connection on it, as far as I know;
the Windows recovery or install disks;
any way of booting Windows without knowing the password.

I do have:
USB flash drives / external hard disk drives;
Ubuntu installer (although on a CD, so useless without a CD drive?);
other computers.

Wiping the hard disk is a solution I'd be happy to contemplate if anyone can advise me on how to do that - there's nothing important on the laptop that needs to be recovered.

A:Re: Portege 3440CT - boot problems

hi abi278,
first of all: what you wanna do?

- installing a new os on this machine?
- use the installed os?

to get rid of the os administrator password:
- install the hdd in a other system and run norhdahls supertool > read every line thats given! it is able to check the registry of a other hdd than the boot device!
- make a installation of xp on a other machine, sysprep this installation and change hdd back
- install the hdd in a other system and make it bootable with dos, copy sourcefiles of desires system and run installation after reinstalling hdd to your 3440ct

maybe you need a special drive to install...

btw: nordahls disk resets the passwords *inside* your os - read the manual of this powerful tool.

Toshiba Portege Z30

We do all our installs via PXE, when pressing F12 I now get two network options where normally I would just get one.

F12 gives the following options:

HDD/SSD :SAMSUNG SSD SERIAL
LAN1 :IPv6
LAN2 :IPv4

When I select either option I get the following read out (IP addresses haven't been included but are correctly pointing to the right servers):

------------------------------------------------------------------------
>>Start PXE over IPv4.
Station IP address is ***.***.***.***
Server IP address is ***.***.***.***
NBP filename is SMSBoot\x86\wdsnbp.com
NBP filesize is 30832 Bytes
Downloading NBP file...

Succeed to download NBP file.

Downloading NBP file...

Succeed to download NBP file.
Press any key to continue...
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have tried searching through the BIOS settings but can't find anything obvious

Can any one advise if there is anything I can try to get this laptop to PXE boot please

Let me know if you require any additional information

Kind regards
Steve

A:Portege Z30 displays ipv4 and ipv6 - won't pxe boot from either

Sounds like your server is not UEFI aware.
Try changing the Boot Mode from UEFI to CSM in the BIOS under the Advanced Tab, under System Configuration. You may need to disable Secure Boot first.

Hi,

I've just got an old Toshiba Portege 344OCT laptop with an HD of 6 GB and with an intel Pentium III processor 500 MHz and 128 MB RAM. At the moment i have it under Windows XP Home Edition. I would like to revert it to Windows 98SE but the computer does not have an floppy drive or an internal cdrom. It does have an usb port, though. I am trying to boot the windows 98 cd from an external usb cdrom drive (EZ-DUB) but it doesn't work. I don't seem to find an option to boot it from an USB device either. My bios is from 27 June 2001.

Is there something that I can do in order to manage to boot my computer from my EZ-BUB? and how could I update my bios to the v1.6 without the floppy drive?

Thanks,

grdoming

I forgot to ADD. Would an external USB floppy drive do the trick?
Thanks again,

Quick question - will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

Layout looks similar; albeit a different colour.

A:Will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

Hi

I think you cannot use the same keyboard because the Portege S100 supports the an-easy-to-use 84-key (US) or 85-key (UK) keyboard and the Portege M100 supports the an-easy-to-use 85/86-key keyboard.
Furthermore the connector of the S100 supports the CN3230 keyboard interface 34 pin connector and the M100 supports the PJ3230 keyboard 34pin connector.

So possibly this could be a problem.
I recommend using the original keyboards released for the each notebook model.

My current windows 10 installation is too bogged down to play games properly. I've tried all the traditional solutions to speed up my PC but none of them made any noticeable difference, so I'd like to try a fresh OS. I'd prefer to avoid doing a "Reset My PC" option and having to re-install all my apps. So I'm trying to install a second windows 10 onto a new partition that will just be used for playing a couple games.

The media creation tool USB option doesn't work on my pc. The USB gets ignored when I boot normally. If I try to boot it directly from the boot menu, I get a "selected device failed to boot" error (with both windows 10 and windows 8 media creation tools). I used a brand new USB drive and tried it immediately after installing the tool onto it. I also tried re-installing the tool a second time.

I tried running the setup.exe at the root of the USB drive, which started properly. However, all the guides I've looked at say that I should get a "custom install" option when running this tool. This is where I would have the option of selecting the partition I want to install windows to. I don't get that option. It just asks me for the basic language/architecture fields, then gives me the "keep everything/keep files/remove everything" options. There are no options after that. If i I click install, the installation begins.

I tried using the windows 8 setup.exe on the USB, but it asks me for a product key. My computer came with wi... Read more

Hallo,

After creating a UEFI bootable USB thumb drive with Rufus (using Windows 8.1 Enterprise ISO x64), for a Dell Optiplex 3010 (configured as UEFI only, no CSM, latest firmware version, Windows 8 installed), I didn't see a USB boot option, so I tried to add one manually. Unfortunately I erased the existing boot option (boot manager) by mistake. Although there were two boot options for PXE booting, the machine will not start anymore, even when there is an active WDS server on the network.

I also see Led's 2 and 3 lighting up, meaning according to the manual 'hardware ok but bios possibly damaged/corrupt'.

I understand I cannot start the machine from a bios boot disk because of GPT partitioning, and the UEFI USB boot disk I made might be corrupt (as it didn't show up as a boot option), however I don't understand why it won't boot from the PXE network card, as these boot options are still there.

Any suggestions on how to solve this?

Thanks for any useful tips,
Bavo

A:Deleted Uefi boot option (Windows Boot Manager) by mistake

The Windows Boot Manager is held in the Bios and restores itself if you boot to a UEFI capable device. Could you please explain exactly what you did to "Add" the USB boot option?

I haven't used Rufus since it is so easy to just format the drive yourself, but it did format in Fat32?

I have the PXE boot options disabled in my bios since I do not have a network boot option.

I am in the process of installing SafeBoot (McAfee Endpoint) full disk encryption on 100+ laptops, most of which are Toshiba. I'm using Device Encryption 5.1.5.0, Release 5300 (515-0015) and I've been able to successfully install it on a number of different Toshiba models, however, the Portege S100 is causing me a major problem. The SafeBoot Client software installs okay on Windows XP SP2 (and SP3) and encrypts the disk as normal but as soon as I restart it fails to boot ever again.

Now, when I first switch on I get:

Starting SafeBoot v5.1
Please wait...

for about a second and then a dialogue box appears in the middle of the screen:

SafeBoot Error
Error: 0xe002001b
No boot disk was found

It never gets to the SafeBoot Logon screen so is still in the pre-boot stage.

I believe this is because this laptop has a build-in SATA RAID controller. We're not using the RAID setup and only have the one original disk installed. The BIOS is the latest version 1.50 and the third system setup screen shows the RAID array state to be 1RAID-0. If I set it to JBOD then I can't even get as far as installing Windows.

So far I have tried replacing the Toshiba RAID driver with the Intel 82801FBM (ICH6M) SATA AHCI 7.0.0.1020 driver. This works fine during Windows installation at the F6 stage and in Windows before encryption. I have even successfully used this driver with a WinTech CD (modified BartPE CD with SafeBoot plug-in) and am able to see the encrypted disk. However, even... Read more

A:Unable to boot Portege S100 after encrypting the HDD with SafeBoot

Hi

I?m not expert in ?SafeBoot? software. It?s not known to me but I would like to say something about the RAID driver which you have used.

I think it?s a wrong driver. It looks like a SATA driver and not RAID driver.

The Toshiba European driver page provides an *Toshiba RAID driver v 1.3.8.0.*

Please check this!

I would also recommend checking the user manual for Portege S100.
There you can find some details about RAID.

The JBOD means ?No RAID settings?. Using this option, Windows cannot be installed in this disk except using the Toshiba Product Recovery DVD/CD

Hi guys,

I have just been given a Toshiba Portege 2000 Laptop to play around with, but the problem that I am having is that I cannot boot it up to start. I keep getting a message that says:

A disk read error occured Press CTRL+Alt+Del to restart.

The Laptop is running Windows XP Professional have tried to "Google" the message above to see if there is a solution to the problem but I cannot find anything.

Is it true that I can boot from a PCMCIA card? If so how would I go about this? The Laptop does not have a Floppy or CD_ROM drive..

Regards.

A:Boot Problem (Toshiba Portege 2000 Laptop)

Disk Read Error means there is a problem with the Boot file or that the HDD has failed. Boot into the Setup Bios and see if the HDD is being recognized. Then go to the Boot order, see if you can boot thru a USB device. Make that the first boot device, then you can use either a USB CD rom drive, or a Flash drive with XP on it.

I upgraded the hard drive in my Portege M200 from 4GB to 80GB using Parted Magic to clone the original drive. The cloning completed successfully, but instead of booting up with the new drive, the M200 just displays a blinking cursor when powered on. Any help is much appreciated.

TIA, focus

A:New hard drive installed on Portege M200 but won't boot

Hi there

Maybe You can try one of the below to fix your problem:

BUT!! ALWAYS keep a backup!!

Boot system up with a DOS floppy (with fdisk.exe inside) to restore MBR by typing

fdisk /mbr

This works even on a SATA disk. Alternative boot up any Win2k or XP installation CD, go to the recovery console and issure command

fixmbr

Hi,

I have a Portege R100 (2003), the original hard drive was damaged beyond repair, therefore I installed a new compatible SSD drive.

I don't have original CD's nor FDD or CD PCMCIA drives.

This notebook does not boot from USB ports.

Then I'm came up with a solution that I'm not sure could work.
I have a Conceptronic PCMCIA Type I/II SD Card Reader. I installed a linux distro to boot(using unetbootin) from an sd card.
When I boot from PCMCIA (F12 selection) the cursor keeps blinking on top left of the screen and nothing happen.
I tried different linux distro's and same result.

What I'm doing wrong ?
Is it a BIOS update problem ? (By the way, the BIOS version is 1.50)

I found on the internet a PCMCIA card with 2 additional USB ports, wonder if any knows that it works with this notebook before buying it.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank You

Alex

So yeah, my simple issue is thaht i installed windows 7 on a hard drive, which i later replaced with a Samsung 840 SSD, which also was bootable. So now ive got 2 windows 7 options to boot from, and the only bad thing there is is that it takes 30 extra seconds to boot up, which isnt that much of an issue, but thats mainly why i bought an ssd, to get a quick bootup time, and i only use the FIRST (highlited) option of windows 7....

A:Extra Windows 7 Boot option makes pc take more time to boot up.

Type msconfig in start search box. Click it when it pops up. Under the Boot tab, highlight the one you want to remove and Delete>Apply>OK

I am dual booting Win7 Ultimate x64 from a SSD and WinXP Pro x64 from a HDD. After POST, i get to a boot selection screen showing the XP 2003 Server edition (XP x64) and Win7. I could enter Win7 but the default is the setup so if I don't do anything the screen times out after 30 seconds, loads the setup, and BSOD. So whatever. I just use arrow up, select Win7 and I'm fine. BUT, I changed the timeout from 30 to 0 seconds in boot options and now I can't figure out how to get back into Win7. To enter XP, I have to press f11 and select the disk from boot options or else it enters setup and BSOD. I need help on getting settings changed so my PC will automatically boot into Win7 and booting into XP is done as it currently is.

Thanks

Just bought a Dell Optiplex 7010 Mini-Tower with Win 8 Pro 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, 500 GB hard drive and an Intel i5 3470 processor. Right now, it has Dell BIOS version A16.

It is normally in UEFI ON and Secure Boot ON, so that F12 on bootup (one-time boot options) does NOT normally show the CD-DVD as a boot option. OK - no problem.

However, if I reboot with F12 and select both UEFI OFF (meaning Legacy ON) and Secure Boot OFF and reboot, then F12 DOES show me the CD-DVD as a boot option, but if I actually try to boot up from a bootable CD, I get an error message.

I have practiced with two bootable CDs - a Knoppix and an Aomei Backupper, both made on earlier machines. Both these CDs work as boot-up CDs in my old XP machine, and the Aomei Backupper CD also worked in someone else's Win 7 Pro 64-bit machine.

What's wrong?

Again, please let me repeat that I am trying to boot from the CD-DVD AFTER I have turned OFF UEFI, turned ON Legacy and turned OFF Secure Boot.

Thanks.

A:No Legacy boot from CD-DVD - UEFI and Secure Boot are OFF

https://www.404techsupport.com/2013/...all-windows-7/

But if you're using those settings, Windows 8 will not start.

I have two Asus M5A97 R 2.0 LE and one Asus M5A97 R 2.0 MBs. I want to do the following:

Duel booth them in the following manner. The main OS will be on an SSD. The trial (Win 10) will be on a second HD (not SSD.)

In addition, I want to use a third HD for data and do this on a clean install.

I know how to move the user folder by doing a single clean install but I am not sure I can have two Win OSs on two different drives using the same third HD to place the user folder.

My plan is to keep the OSs totally separate and using the bios to select the drives.

1) Can this be done?
2) Is it best for me to DISABLE SECURE BOOT IF I DO THIS?

A:New Builds: Duel Boot, ? Secure Boot

Secure boot is a pain. might as well disable it.

With all HD's disconnected except the SSD. Install the main OSDisconnect the SSD and connect the second HD. Install Win 10Connect everything back: SSD, HD1,HD2Boot up using the boot menu if available so you don't have to reconfigure the BIOS.

I have an old Portege 3110, wont boot.

Checked connection and power supply etc etc. Power light is green with main connected, then press on button it goes off, nothing happens then it flashes orange with hex code 4A

Does anyone know what hex code 4A is please?

Thanks

A:Portege 3110 wont boot - hexadecimal error codes

Hmmm? I don?t think that somebody here in the forum will be able to provide an answer what A4 Hex means.
Fact is that such error meanings depend on the notebook, motherboard and the installed BIOS.
I mean the A4 Hex error code doesn?t mean the same fault on all Toshiba notebooks.

Furthermore the maintance manuals are not for public usage and only the authorized service partner could locate the hardware problem related to this ?hex code?.

So in my opinion you should contact the ASP in your country for details and help.

Good luck buddy

Hi,

I have an Old Portege A100, Model: PPA10A-0002LP, but I can't seem to find that model on any Toshiba website, closest I've seen is the " PPA10A-0002L".

I'm wanting to see if there's a BIOS update that will allow me to Boot from a USB Device.

The issue I am having is that I need to reinstall Windows, but the CD ROm cant read discs.
It does Network Booting PXE, but i'm new to this sort of thing and have absolutly no idea what to do there.

Any help would be great,

A:Portege A100 PPA10A - Will BIOS update allow to boot from a USB device

Hi

Portege A100 seems to be developed only for Australian market.
As you said there is a Portege A100 PPA10A-0002L model number listed on the Toshiba Australian page but the Portege A100 PPA10A-0002LP belongs to the same series which is PPA10A.
So in my opinion the BIOS should work too.

Anyway, I doubt that the BIOS update will add any further booting options.

Usually the BIOS support the booting from CD/DVD drive, HDD, LAN and USB FDD.
It should be possible to boot from a bootable diskette using an USB FDD drive.
I doubt you would be able to boot from USB ODD since this Portege A100 supports an internal CD/DVD drive.

can't install os on a Portege m200 tablet.
there is no cd rom or a drive, and no support for a usb drive. It will boot over a network pxe, but I don't no how to do that. I have try a lot of stuff like pulling the drive installing in another computer all I get is a missing boot manger. help if you can thanks

A:Can't install OS on optical drive-less Portege m200 Tablet, no USB boot

You don't say which operating system you are trying to install but try using the other PC to install the OS and then moving the hard drive back to the tablet to install the drivers and programs. Of course, you will need a bootable operating system cd and you should download your tablet drivers from the Toshiba website.

When you got the "missing boot manager" message, evidently you were trying to boot from that hard drive but that's not what you want to do if you are trying to install Windows, for example. Change the boot order to CD first so it will boot from your OS installation CD.

I've had Win 7 Pro on my laptop for over a year. I installed a 2nd hard drive to it recently and today I installed Windows 8 Pro on the 2nd hard drive. It's been a roller coaster of good & bad luck.

The first install went fine, until I tried to install the Windows 8.1 upgrade from the Windows store, then things went bad and I had to go into Windows 7 and eventually delete the Windows 8 volume and change it from MBR to GPT because of UEFI (no secure boot enabled thankfully). Gawd what a stretch of error messages telling me I can't install Windows 8 on the blank hard drive because it was or wasn't MBR or GPT, or the automagically made partitions weren't in the right order.

After spending over 7 hours twice in a row installing Windows 8, I finally find out that there's no boot option for Windows 7 anymore.

The only clue I have is to use a Windows 7 repair disk and use diskpart.exe and make the Win 7 drive "active" but that's a little foreign to me at this point.

A:GPT Win 8 Dual boot installation killed Win 7 MBR boot option.

I'm looking in Computer Management / Disk Management from within Windows 8.

Disk 0: SYSTEM D: 438 MB NTFS (lengthened from 199 MB with EaseUS because Acronis 2014 thought it too small while crashing), Healthy (Active, Primary Partition); Win 7 E: 930.98 GB NTFS Healthy (Primary Partition); HP_TOOLS F: 102 MB FAT 32 Healthy (Primary Partition)

Disk 1: 300 MB Healthy (Recovery Partition) {no letter}; 100 MB Healthy (EFI System Partition) {no letter}; C: 931.00 GB NTFS Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)

And several other external disks which don't deserve mention today.

I am not getting the screen asking me to choose which Operating system at boot up. It gives me no options and just Boots straight to the C drive where I have Windows 7 Pro.
In preparation I shrunk the Volume of the C drive and created a new partition (E) in which I made it a simple volume NTFS . I then installed Windows 8 Pro from the CD ROM and everything went fine. However when I re boot it just Boots straight into Windows 7 Pro and no mention of Windows 8.
I tried to use Easy BCD 2.2 and now I have three entries (1) Windows 7 (2) Microsoft Windows 7 (3) Microsoft Windows 8
When I select Windows 8 at boot up I then get an error telling me the boot Load EXE file is corrupt

I am really stumped, I have loaded windows 8 four times and still get the same result. My ultimate goal is to get the Windows Dual Boot Screen.
