Portege M400 - Change BIOS Password within OS without knowing password?

Q: Portege M400 - Change BIOS Password within OS without knowing password?

Hello all,

I hope I can get some help / guidance from some one with more experience with the M400 if possible?!

I reinstalled the OS and setup the biometric security for me, which has worked flawlessly! However I stupidly also set up the boot up security (BIOS Password). So when the tablet gets turned on I can scan my finger and get in without any issues, however I now want to turn the boot up security off. So I booted it in to the OS and went to disable it....however it asks for my password....which I have forgot as I have been a typical end user and have been only using my bloody finger!

Does anyone know if I can disable the BIOS security while in the OS using the biomentric security rather than entering a password? I have tried just changing the admin password within the win OS but that doesn't work....any ideas?

Any help with be greatly appreciated!

You are speaking about BIOS password which you set up in the BIOS?
As far as I know you cannot remove the BIOS password if you don?t know the old BIOS password.
In such case just the Toshiba ASP could help you? just the Toshiba ASP technician could remove the unknown BIOS password

No items can bee changed?

Can anybody help me???

A:Re: Portege M400 - Cannot change anything in Bios

You don?t need to change the booting device in BIOS.
You can also set it while notebook powering up.
Press F12 immediately after the notebook has been powered on
Then a boot menu should appear.
Here you have to choose ODD as booting device and should confirm with Enter.

That?s it

Yes, I know this question sounds like one a thief would ask. I'm not a thief. I've depended on biometrics on my computer to log on for so long, I've forgotten what my password is. My fingerprint scanner inexplicably stopped working, so now I can't log on. The account is the administrator account, so I can't change its password from another user. Is there a way that I create a password reset disk or something, maybe from another user?

I purchased an M400 Tablet system and having a lot of trouble with the BIOS.

I am able to get into the BIOS, but it appears to be restricted.
It says there are three pages and to use the pgup and pgdn to change pages, this does not work.

I have tried it with a USB keyboard and removing the keyboard from the tablet, but this does not work either.
The laptop does not have SWSetup installed on it. I downloaded this from the website but say's that the BIOS is incorrect.

I then decided to flash the BIOS.
Downloaded windows BIOS flash and that say's that the BIOS is incorrect.

I would like to reinstall the OS but at the moment I am unable to to get it to boot from the CD as I can't change the boot sequence.

Can any one please help me.

A:Portege M400 - Cannot navigate through BIOS pages

That?s strange.
First of all you can boot from the CD pressing F12 and then you could choose ODD as booting device.

Secondly it?s interesting to know if some passwords (user or supervisor password) have been set because such kind of password could restrict changing the BIOS options.

My husband found a Dell desktop left behind in one of the rental properties his company manages and brought it home. It works just fine, the only problem is that you have to enter the administrator password to do pretty much anything. There is a guest user that I can log onto without a password and get on the internet, but I can't save any files or download any programs without the password. Is there a way I can remove this password lock, without knowing the password or logging onto the admin user, or would I have to completely wipe Windows and reinstall it?
Thank you!

A:How to remove administrator password, without knowing the password?

Offline Registry Editor
Enable the Hidden Adminstrator Account and then use it to reset the standard Administrator Account. Follow this guide. Here is a video. You don't want to reset your admin accounts password using the Offline Registry Editor if by chance the file system is encrypted.
If password is reset on users that have EFS encrypted files, and the system is XP or newer, all encrypted files for that user will be UNREADABLE! and cannot be recovered unless you remember the old password again If you don't know if you have encrypted files or not, you most likely don't have them. (except maybe on corporate systems)

A:Portege R500 BIOS password

BIOS protection is very important feature for protection so it cannot be discussed in public forum.
If someone writes here how you can remove BIOS password every stolen Portege R500 can be unlocked.

I know it costs a bit but this should be done by Authorized service provider.

Unfortunately nobody here can help you with this. BIOS password is very important security feature and it cannot be solved on some public forums.
This can be solved with authorized service only.

It is very stupid situation now. If your notebook is ?locked? by BIOS password you have big problem now and nobody here can help you. BIOS password must be removed by authorized service provider.
BIOS password is very important security feature so any problem with locked machine must be handled by ASP. There are several different methods for BIOS password removal and it has nothing to do with BIOS backup or some kind of new BIOS installation.

Can anyone help with this problem.

At our site we have approx 300 of these laptops and they are all bios protected.
Recently had a problem where when inputting the bios password and it says its incorrect even though its the standard password we use on all our laptops. The user also confirms they didn't set a password...

Is it possible for the bios to somehow have become currupted (the machine was experiencing blue screens before) or how can I factory reset the bios password.

Before anyone says yes we own the machince and can prove it!

A:Portege R700 protected by unknown BIOS password

Maybe it sounds stupid but I think you should clarify this with nearest Toshiba service provider.
I use Toshiba notebooks for years now and I know for sure that Toshiba doesn?t sell notebooks with any kind of password or such kind of protection.

If you have such amount of notebooks maybe there was some special dial about configuration or protection. Anyway, BIOS password removal cannot be theme on such public forum. BIOS password protection is very important security feature and if there is some problem it must be clarified with authorized Toshiba service provider.

BIOS password cannot be set or changed from alone and, as far as I know, there is no kind of factory reset. I just know that BIOS can be set to default settings. That?s all.
Contact nearest Toshiba service provider and clarify this issue.

My Portege R700M stopped working after I spilled tea on it. Service center had rejected it quoting 'Motherboard, damaged', The laptop was setup for BIOS password protection for HDD.

Even though the hard drive is intact, I am not able to recover the data from due to BIOS password protection. will Toshiba able to help me unlock the password.

A:Defective Portege R700M - BIOS & HDD password reset

I presume mainboard is defective and will be replaced. I presume HDD is OK so I believe your original HDD will be used again. After mainboard replacement you don?t need BIOS password anymore. New mainboard will not be secured by BIOS password.

At least explain the situation and Toshiba technicians will explain to you how it works.

I tried all those "Press, ESC, Press F2, Press F1, Press INS" stuff, nothing worked out.
I removed the battery for several mins while pressing the power button, nothing.

Maybe somebody has some kind of clue whats wrong with this maschine....

A:Portege R830-1EE: Supervisor / Bios password - No Boot or login prompt

Did you use some high ASCII character like ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ? etc in your BIOS / Supervisor password?

In the past the usage of such characters prevented the notebook from booting up.
In such case you had to contact the service partner in order to solve this problem.

I have now moved into an apartment complex and need to password it. How can I do this without knowing the setup information? It is a netger wireless router. Thanks for any help here. I don't want have to go buy a new one to start over!

A:How to password wireless router without knowing my setup information?

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Are you able to log into the router or did your friend change the administration log-in password?

If you can no longer log into the router administration pages, check the router for some kind of recessed Reset switch. The user manual should tell you where it is and how to use it. You should then be able to log into it using the default user name and password. That will then allow you to configure it to work with the apartment's Internet connection and also configure the Wireless encryption method and password.

Welcome Ashad to the windows 7 forums.

If you don't remember the password then there are most probably two chances that unless you can remember the password, both are easy, slim and none.
That's the reason for security software, not allowing access unless you know the password.

Just chalk it up to experience.

I'm having a problem with a Toshiba Satellite L300D. After I reinstalled the HDD it would beep. To solve this I went into BIOS to look and see if the board had some sort of intrusion setting. When I exited the BIOS and restarted I know get the Enter Current Password (with a blue background on a black screen) with continuos beeps. The thing is it seems to auto enter in 10 characters (*) and then stop. There are no other options.

I have searched unsuccessfully for any info about this and I cant even find where the CMOS is located which I think is soldered onto the board.

Has anybody had any similar experience like this?
I would really appreciate any help its driving me crazy.

Dear Customer, Welcome to HP Support Forum and we are glad to assist you. This is to inform you that all HP Business Notebooks such as Probooks  or Elitebooks have more stringent security than consumer models infact they don't produce 'halt codes', the password cannot be derived from the Serial Number and thecode is stored in non-volatile memory so removing the RTC cell will not reset the password in this case. Please have a look at this link. Replace the BIOS chip Please Contact HP Business Notebook support they should be able to send you a customized SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password. Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again  **Click the White Thumbs Up Button on the right to say Thanks**Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem. Thank You,GBL84I am not an HP Employee

Then I want to Boot from the Windows XP CD, not recovery my own one.

Windows started up and after a short time the installation ends with the message that there isnt any HDD. This I try sometimes :-( Hope someone can help me.

A:Portege M400 - FSB spectrum settings?

Hi Skochito,

What you mean with FSB exactly? Front Side Bus of your CPU?

In this case I can only say it?s not possible to overclock the CPU. The BIOS doesn?t offer such options and overclocking can make your system unstable and overheat!!!

Hi, gotta problem, I'm trying to install Windows 7 on my M400, but it don't see hard drive.
The hard drive is surly ok, 'couse I've tested it in the other netbook, I can see it in BIOS, but any installing program cannot.

(I've tried XP Tablet ed., and Ubuntu as well)

A:Portege M400 - Windows 7 doesn't see the HDD

Hi Radzik,

I think Windows doesn?t see the HDD due missing RAID drivers? Windows needs such RAID drivers before you can install it because it doesn?t contain such drivers so the HDD is not recognized. You can download the RAID driver on Toshiba website.

Then you can create a new installation disk using nLite with the drivers or you copy the drivers on an external floppy drive. After booting from Windows XP you have to press F6 key to load the drivers from FDD.

Check this!!!

Hi i have a Toshiba Portege M400 Model No. PPM41E-00H01CHK

I re-installed OS (Window Xp Tablet) from the recovery disk as it was running slow.

It has been hanging at the Toshiba Boot screen, showing Built in HDD Error and failing to boot.

When disconnecting the power and hdd and then re-connecting it occasionally booted but if shut down would fail to boot again so i figured the hdd was failing and bought a new one.

Now I can not install xp onto the new hdd. I am getting Built in HDD Error, this time however it goes past this message and will boot from the recovery cd to the install screen.

It then fails to install and gives a message about a faulty disk or bad RAID Configuration.

I have since found out that this is something to do with the portege m400 having a SATA HDD which is not supported by Xp natively and needing to install raid drivers beforehand.

I have read that the recovery disk should be able to boot to a new disk directly and do the configuration but i can't seem to get it working.
How can i install the OS onto the new hdd?

Thanks in advanced

A:Portege m400 New HDD Install problem

Reference: Product manual, .

If you are using recovery disks that do not need a recovery partition...then you should be able to install with no problem.

If your tablet also contained a recovery/restore partition that had to be used with the recovery would seem that is your problem.

If you are using recovery/restore disks provided by Toshiba...any/all drivers needed for recovery/restore would be included in the recovery/restore process.

I am trying to restore an old Toshiba Portege M400. I have WIN XP Tablet 2005 installed and what I think are all the drivers. Everything works great except the touchscreen.

I have been all over the web, downloaded and installed some WACOM drivers aswas suggested in another thread here - still no luck.

Anybody have any ideas or experience about how to fix this?

A:Touchscreen is not working on old Portege M400

Unfortunately I don?t have this Portege and cannot help you with this but what you can do is to check Installations Instructions document and check if you have installed all stuff listed there.

Check it out and post some feedback.

One year ago, when I had been using my Portege M400 for 2 years, it started deadlocking occasionally. Sometimes [I couldn't even start it up|]. Using cut and try method I located the problem. The metal spring which clasps the heatsink to CPU was doing it with not enough strength:

The problem has been solvable by benting the clutches so the spring starts apply more force clasping the heatsink to CPU:

Applying a new layer of thermal grease has been helpful as well:

However, the solution works for several weeks only. And then (particularly if it is hot outside) the story starts all over again.

Any suggestions how to solve the problem once and for all? Thanks.

A:Portege M400 - CPU cooling issue

Hi Greendrake,

It?s really great that you are interested in your Portege M400 and you can disassmble it. It?s really not easy and so this can only be done from people with a lot of experience.

Anyway, as you know here it?s user forum only. That means you can talk with normal people like you and me. So I would recommend contacting an authorized service provider in your country. Maybe the guys know about this problem or something else or you need a special thermal grease because not all thermal greases compatible to all cooling assemblies.

By the way: On the Toshiba website you can find a list of all service providers.

I hope it helps. :)

i received a second hand toshiba portege m400 by mail and saw that it probably has some water condensation trapped between the outer screen and the touchscreen behind it. because the screen in the upper left corner looks whitish. and the sender of the laptop said it wasn't there when he sended it. i have a picture of the trapped moisture, for those who want to see it.

so, i opened the screen by unscrewing it. and saw that most of the moisture is trapped between the outer glas screen and another layer behind it, which, i guess, is the touchscreen part. which look unreachable. these 2? layers form the upperpart of the screen.

the lcdscreen with all the electronics below that layer, form the lower part of the screen or if you will, the cover. this part is now oke. it had also some water condensation on it and i could gently wipe the little bit of moisture from that lcdscreen without trouble. that helped a little bit in this problem.

but some moisture stays trapped between that glass layer and touchscreen layer part in the upperpart of the screen/cover.

in the hope of evaporating the moisture, i left the lit a little bit open for a day, i even separated the upperpart and lowerpart of the screen. i applied some heat of a infrared lamp, from a save distance. all that didn't help.

*so, how do I remove the water condensation?*

*is there a way to lift a layer up in the upperpart of the screen to reach the moisture?*

A:Portege M400 - How to remove the water condensation?

Hello olekike

Please don?t understand me wrong but I?m afraid you need professional help with this. As I can see your question is not answered for days now and I believe nobody here has much experience with this stuff.
Display replacement OK but how to remove water condensation on touch screen is maybe too heavy for us.

I strongly recommend you to contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. talk with guys what can be done about it.

Toshiba provide recovery disks for notebooks series which are not too old.

There is a message at the bottom that I click on that states: "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. Windows needs the driver for device [Toshiba RAID]. drivers I have downloaded: util_hdd_protection, util_raid_virtual_device, driver_raid_TC00170000B.EXE
5. I get the message "no device driver were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, and the click ok.
6. I can't get passed this point. I have downloaded every driver on Toshiba's website that has to do with HDD or raid drivers. It looks like all the device drivers that I am downloading are .exe files and not the actually driver. I have called Toshiba and the are useless.

i have a M400 which is running on EC 2.1, BIOS 2.1N, Windows 7, 32bit, which is freshly installed and a T2400 CPU and 2GB of memory whoch i recently tested and which are O.K.. The computer some times suddenly simply stops with BSOD 0x101 when i am doing somple tasks such as writing a note in OneNote or scrolling through a Word Document- so no high CPU consumption or special tasks done. I know that BIOS 2.1 is old but that is the newest one available with an acceptable fan noise behaviour- so I really don't want to upgrade this BIOS.

So I worked out some possible reasons for this STOP error:

- faulty CPU
- bad driver which is causing a Dead Lock
- BIOS bug

So my questions are:

is there some where out there who had this problem too?
Can anyone tell me if this is possibly a known error fixed in a newer BIOS?

Is anyone out there having a newer BIOS with low fan noise behaviour? (I doubt)
Can't toshiba simply modify a newer BIOS version with the fan thing? I simply dont understand how one can throw a laptop on the market which has a fan which is always running at least at medium speeds although the is totally NO LOAD and CPU is at 30C.

Is there someone who possibly might point a driver to me which may cause the problem?

Any ohter suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

A:Portege M400 - STOP error 0x101 on Windows 7

Hi zacha,

> So I worked out some possible reasons for this STOP error:
Who says that these are the possible reasons for this?

Normally a bluescreen is related to drivers and/or faulty hardware. I can?t imagine that the BIOS is causing this so you should check the device manager for yellow exclamation marks. Maybe a device isn?t working properly.

After this check the RAM modules, they are typical reasons for that. You can use Memtest86 to check the modules. It?s a freeware diagnostic tool that you can start from bootable disk.

Hi all.

I have a Toshiba portage M400 that I got hold of and I was trying to install normal windows XP. This laptop is a pain to install windows XP as it needs a special AHCI/Raid driver or the hard drives will not be detected by this laptop at all.

I downloaded every single driver for this, from Toshiba and not one of them worked, when loaded with F6 on a floppy. Why Toshiba proved drivers that don't work I don't know. Toshiba seriously need to sort out there drivers and the website, as it's a mess.

I searched high and low, even on here but no solutions. plenty of threads complaining about the same problem though. This was until I found one very old post from 2009 on another forum, that lead me in the right direction.

So am posting here and hope it will help others and be easier to find. The drives for Windows 7 work fine, it?s just XP that is the issue, due to the way Toshiba made this laptop. You can forget the AHCI drivers from Toshiba m400 drivers page, they don't, wont work. I tried all of them, including the old versions.

You need to go to Intel?s website and download the Intel storage Matrix 5.5 Driver. Here

Now download the file and then unzip the file. You will need a USB floppy drive that is compatible with XP F6. Not all USB floppy drives work.

Click on the unzipped Exe file and it will ask you to put in a floppy disk. It will give a warning and then just except and allow it to copy f... Read more

Hopefully someone can help me out

A:Portege M400 - Windows XP cannot find the hard disk drive

Hi wacksonjackson,

Why these RAID drivers are not good for you? Windows XP requires RAID drivers if your notebook has RAID controller and there is no other option to install XP from a normal Windows XP disk. So download the RAID drivers on official Toshiba website. Either you create a new installation disk with RAID drivers using freeware tool nLite or you copy the drivers on an external USB FDD and load them during XP setup.

Also check similar threads here in forum. You will find hundreds of similar threads about SATA and RAID drivers.

Check this!!!

All machines are running the latest BIOS (2.10) and WIndows 7 64bit. As we are a school we want to prevent the kids from booting from CDs etc.,

I have configured the Security section of BIOS like so;

User Password: Not Registered
Supervisor Password: Registered
HDD1/SSD1 Password Mode: <User Only>
HDD User Password: Not Registered
TPM: <Disabled>

Any help or confirmation of the issue would be appreciated. Cheers!

I have a weird situation here. I have a user on a domain that has changed their password this morning. After they have log in, she is getting a popup in the taskbar saying that her password will expire in 2 days. I though that after she has changed her password,
it would reset the counter. It's not. Is there a way to fix this? All of our computers are joined to the domain and she is the only one that is having this issue.
