Portege M600 - Volume icon has a red cross on it

Q: Portege M600 - Volume icon has a red cross on it

Dear all,

I am in dire need of help to fix my laptop sound card. My laptop (TOSHIBA M600 on windows vista basic as its original operating system) has been working perfectly for the last 3 yrs. Just about 3 weeks ago the the volume icon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen had a red cross marked on it. I am no longer able to listen to online lectures, music, videos etc. I opened the device manager and found no such things as Sound, video and game controllers. This happened after one of my friend installed a faked windows 7. Since then i decided to buy and re-installed a legal window 7 professional, but the problem persists. The volume icon at the bottom of the screen still has a red cross on it.

Some kind people out there please help me...i am a student and cannot afford it to be fixed by those expensive computer genius in the computer store. Also....please use simple lay people english when you give instructions or help.

Thank you so much in advance

A: Portege M600 - Volume icon has a red cross on it

Hi buddy,

Usually such a red cross means that there is a no sound driver installed or driver is muddled up? Have you already tried to reinstall the sound driver?

What sound card you have installed?
Normally you can get all drivers on official Toshiba website but for an older model like yours I could imagine that you must check other pages. For example if you have a Realtek sound card, check the Realtek page directly:

I have had on-going sound problems with my laptop and feel so frustrated - please help!

I have downloaded the sound driver (abt a million times - and tried uninstalling then reinstalling) - and repeatedly get no volume icon on the desk top and a message saying "no sound driver can be found".

I did manage to fix it once - when i had WIndows Vista installed - by finding some obscure patch - but this time around - no solutions.

Can anyone help - it is so frustrating!!!!

A:Sound problem with toshiba portege M600

Simple thing to do as you just got it so you don't have huge thing to backup or not at all simply do a fresh install of Windows 7 on your laptop. It is better to do fresh install rather than making an upgrade.

Also you may try to install the latest driver for you sound card.

The display backlight is off and will not turn back on. I can see the laptop when it's directed to a 2nd monitor. I can see very faintly the desktop on the laptop screen- except it is dark. I have tried all the software fixes I can find in this forum but nothing works.

One suggestion I have found that the switch that turns off the display when the lid is closed is stuck in the off position. This makes sense but how do I locate this switch.

Is it incorporated in the display panel hinge?

A:Portege M600 - Backlight switch location

>I can see very faintly the desktop on the laptop screen...
Have you noticed this from the moment when you switch the notebook ON (Toshiba welcome screen and BIOS settings)?
I cannot say for sure but I?m afraid described problem has nothing to do with software but with FL inverter. Maybe is FL inverter defective and must be exchanged.

I am using Toshiba Portege M600 with windows Vista.
When I am reboot my lap top I am not getting any sounds.. In the system tray the volume icon button is marked with X and when I mused over it syas that " No audio output device is installed.".I tried all the option like uninstall the sound driver and reinstall it. When i checked in the device manager under Sound, game and controller I am getting Realtek High definition audio driver with exclamation sign. When I tried to update the driver it shows that "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

Please guide me to resolve this problem.

A:Portege M600- No audio outout device is installed.

I would try:

1) Update the BIOS and set it to the default settings.
2) Uninstall and reinstall the sound drivers. Look for updated drivers on the Toshiba Website.

My Portege M600 has a re-occurring problem.
After some time in use the screen suddenly shows columns about an inch wide and various colours.
It looks like stacks of varicoloured coins.

The speakers emit a loud screech at the same time. We have to hold down the OFF switch for some seconds to stop the computer. It will then start up normally but of course everything we were working on is lost.

On some days it does that around every half hour!
Other days once or twice a day. Some days not at all.

I feel it could be something to do with overheating.
I have the back of the laptop raised to aid air-flow. Laptop is usually used on a desk.

Is the M600 worth repairing?
At what cost maybe?

A:Portege M600 - Jagged screen picture and loud noise

An higher internal temperature cause notebook crash and yes, the symptoms described in your post above could be caused due to high temperature.

Did you ever clean the fans in the past?
Would recommend doing this using an compressed air spray. The dust inside the cooling vents might prevent the air from circulation and this leads to higher temperature level.

Of course the high temperature might be one of possible reasons causing this problem? however, check if cleaning the fans would help.

I had popup ads coming up on my computer all the time, and error messages with bad grammar on them.I installed Mc Afee, Ad Aware, Spybot search and Destroy, vundo remover and run them all. I also ran Mc Afee Stinger as suggested on here. I am connected to a network and have internet access.

However, the network status icon has a red cross on it as if i am not connected. Even more strange is if i hover over the icon its read "Network Internet access"

I don't use any third party connection software and don't have any third party firewalls running.

I am plugged in direct to the router with an ethernet cable.

This isn't a massive problem but i'd prefer the icon not to have the red cross on it.

Ive been using W7 since the early builds and am on HP 32bit these days.
In the past if i lost internet connection i would get a red cross on the network icon. This would go away once connection was restored.
This past week or so this cross keeps appearing. Thing is the connection is fine, no problens what so ever.

Anyone else experienced this. Please no "Clean install" replies, thats way to drastic.

Thanks for any help.

A:Nework icon has a red cross on it but connection is fine

It sounds as though it could be a driver issue. On the odd occasion when I lose connectivity, it's only to the Internet so my icon just shows a yellow triangle with the exclamation mark superimposed on it. Fortunately, my router automatically reconnects if this happens, so I'm not down for more than about a minute.

The sound volume on my R500 (R500-11c to be exact) is ridiculously low. Only with volume maxed out (100) and using headphones do I hear anything at all, and even then it's way too low to be useful. I can just make out the test sounds in the left and then right earphone when using the test sound found at Control Panel -> Sound -> Speakers (there are no Headphones to be selected) -> Properties -> Advanced -> Test. Unplugging the headphones I hear nothing from the speakers, due to the (very low) sounds made by the fan and HDD. Playing music (with headphones) I can just make out that sounds are being produced, but I can't even make out what is playing.

I've tested the things mentioned in the "Satellite 5105-S901 Sound is very low (even on max volume) using supplied Toshiba driver" thread with no success (including Loudness Equalization).

I'm running Vista Business 32bit, and have tried the driver_audio_realtek26117B.exe, driver_audio_realtek_TC00157600B.exe, and Vista_Win7_R243_x86.exe driver files, and also used the util_mute_off_25847B.exe utility.

Enabling mute makes the already faint sounds go completely silent, so I don't think it's a mute issue.

Jack detection does work, I can see that in the Realtek HD Audio Manager program. Using that program's sound test (Speaker Configuration) I have to go to a completely silent room, and even then I only hear something in the right earphone. (I think; it's so darn low I could be imagining I hear it... Read more

A:Very low sound volume on Portege R500

According to your message, you have already tried to increase the volume using all possible options?
Did you try to increase the volume in control panel -> Realtek HD audio manager??
Check this?

You have also tried to update the Realtek sound driver?.
Did you use the one from the Realtek page directly?
Check this!

If this will not help, you could test the notebook with new recovered system?

But if this will not improve the volume, then this could be a hardware problem?

I have an HP f2105 21" monitor running on Windows 7 x64. Recently the Volume Icon keeps appearing on my screen, and automatically increases the volume to 100%. I have not made any significant changes in my operating system. The Icon stands in front of all other screens and cannot be dismissed. It quits when it's ready after a few seconds. It pops up every 3-4 minutes or so. My drivers are up to date. I've tried disconnecting the monitor and reconnecting it. Turning it off and on, etc. So far nothing has helped.

Hello melb1946Does your keyboard have volume buttons? I know in my experiences I have sometimes run into similar scenarios. In my case the problem was accidentally hitting the volume button on my keyboard. How is your sound setup in Windows 7? Is your monitor set as the default sound device? Do other sound devices increase their volumes?Probably one of the best ways to isolate the problem would be to put the monitor on another computer and see if the sound continues to appear and go up.

hi, i think my computer has a quite serious problem, yesterday i tried to install a few programs n maybe one of them contains a virus, when i did the virus scanning, i found there's trojan virus there.
i cudn't open my c: or my documents, and almost all.

i tried to cleaned them up using my antivirus program (AVG 7.5, free ed)
and it works

after that, i tried to do another scanning, and the result shows that it has no viruses anymore,

fyi- before there was 8 file were infected, most of them are from system32

the new problem is, even though i can open all my drives like normal, but the icon of my drive c now has changed into a red cross symbol, as shown in the attachments, "screen"

and when i turn my laptop on, there's a box appears, shown in attachments, "error1"

can u please tell me what is going on with my laptop?
and what should i do?

thanks a lot.

A:why does the icon of my computer (drive c) is changing to a red cross symbol?

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

My Dell-VOSTRO laptop is kinda in a weird situation now with spyware, and hopefully someone can help me fix this. It's been bugging me for the past 3 days. The problem is on desktop bottom right corner, where the volume icon and msn icon are, there is always a round red icon with white cross pops up something like this:

"Your computer is infected!

Windows has detected spyware infection!

It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to pervent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you.

Click here to protect your comupter from spyware!"

I know this is a spyare spam try to trick you to install their program and not a real windows warning, so I haven't clicked it yet. but I just can't get rid of it. I've tried quite a few things, but nothing works.

There is also a weird thing is that I can't run HijackThis on this laptop, I even renamed it to "Fumble" as someone previous suggested, but it still won't work. Once you double click on the icon, nothing happens. Therefore, I don't really have a HJT log to post. I did follow the steps to run a Panda virus scan and attached the log. Hope it helps in some degrees.

Someone, please help me on this to get rid of that red round icon with the white cross spyware or let me know what need to be disabled to get HiJackThis running to produce a log for you guys.

Thanks a lot in advance!

A:Trojan/Spyware infected! [Red icon with white cross appear on task bar] Please help!

I have now installed Windows 7 on my R500 to prepare for Windows XP's end of life.
I experienced that now with Windows 7 the sound does not really work.

The build-in loudspeaker does not work and an externally connected speaker with amplifier can just get some sound in max amplification. I googled and saw many people having similar issues.

Does anybody know if Toshiba has a fix for this ?

Do other people with Portege laptops have the same issue ?

Thank you

A:Portege R500 - Low sound volume with Win 7 and Realtek driver

As far as I know the Portege R500 supports the Realtek ALC262
I've googled and found people having problems with low sound volume on other laptops from other manufacturers using the ALC262 chip

But I found the solutions :)
Download the small ?Sound Utility to Turn Mute Off After Upgrading to Vista?
[Sound Utility to Turn Mute Off |] and unzip it using WinRAR or WinZip
You will find a small file called 'MuteOff'. Run this file as administrator and check if your sound would work.

Note: All drivers should be installed as well as the Realtek sound driver.

Feedback would be appreciated

Windows 7 32-bit won't play sound.

Device Manager\Sound, video and game controllers\High Definition Audio Device ok.
Double click and window says:
High Definition Audio Device Properties\General: Device status says This device is working properly.

Speakers are plugged in and make a crackle when plugging in to correct holes.

A:Sound/Mixer icon has red cross. No Audio Output Device is installed.

If it's shown as "working properly" in the Device Manager, the speaker icon you have can also be because the sound is muted.

You show "High Definition Audio Device" rather than the actual sound device which suggests you have the generic Windows/Microsoft installed sound driver rather than the actual sound driver from the motherboard vendor. In many cases the generic Windows driver does not work or work correctly.

You can try and uninstall/reinstall by RIGHT clicking on the entry for the sound and then LEFT click "Uninstall" (DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers) then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of flakey problems.

If the uninstall/reinstall does not fix it, the next step is to get the correct sound drivers and install them.

Howdy everyone, am in a bit of a pickle and would appreciate some pointers.
The past 2 days i have lost the sounds of my operating system, cannot stream audio and have lost my volume icon from the taskbar.

I am however able to listen to CDs through itunes, media player etc and can watch DVDs fine. It is just there are no sounds on windows start up and games etc and no streaming audio on Youtube, Myspace etc.

I have tried many things, obviously ticking, un ticking the box in control panel etc. Have tried system restore, been on kellys korner or whatever its called, looked up the problem but i need XP driver disk to reinstall sounds card. I dont have XP driver disk.
aswell i tried downloading new soundcard which didnt work. Was clutching at straws really.

i think some kind of codec i downloaded started the problem. My "show desktop" and Thunderbird icons have also disappeared from other side of taskbar.

My system is XP Pro, a Compaq Armada M700 laptop. Soundcard is a ESS Maestro 2E
Im usually pretty good at solving these kinds of problems, have been googling this for ages tho to no avail

if anyone could help that would be great

Hey Guys,

I removed the AC Power cable for a split second (battery was 100% at the time) and my computer just shutdown.
I replugged and rebooted and now I've got a "red cross" next to the power icon in my system tray (see attached image)

If I put the mouse over it - it just says "Fully Charged 100%" and shows my current power plan; which is "high performance" and been using it since I got the laptop.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on my HP Pavilion DV5.
Computer's about a year old now.
I've update all my drivers and checked Device manager and there are no errors/warnings for anything battery related.

Any suggestions on how to get this fixed or what the problem might be?

Two days back when i was working on my computer then it says that windows is shutting down. When it restarted, I found that the sound was gone and the volume icon on the status bar was missing.
I checked the system hardware and found that it says " no external device is attached".

I tried the system restore option also but it says firstly shut down the system and restart even after restarting the system.

I am very upset, what to do? Please help meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

how do I get the icon to appear in the task bar. The "show volume icon" box is checked in the sounds and audio window.

A:volume icon

Right click the task bar

Click "Properties"

At the bottom there's a button called "Customize..."

Click on it, and in there you can decide which icons XP should:

- Always hide (So you can hide an icon you only need sometimes)
- Always Show (For the volume, you want this)
- Hide When Inactive (when nothing is happening with this process, XP hides the icon.)

They are otherwise hidden behind an arrow. You can click this to expand it and view the icons.

To always view all icons, uncheck the "Hide Inactive Icons" check box in the "Properties" menu.

My sound volume keeps disappearing from my task bar. I am running xp home media edition, I do not have the cd just a restore cd. In my control panel in sounds it has a check next to show in task bar. My task bar is customized to always show volume icon. If I restore to an earlier date it will come back, if I boot up and go to last good configuration sometimes it works the first time if not I do it again and it will put my sound icon back. Once the icon is back the next time I shut down or reboot it is gone again. I don't have any virus or trojans. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Lisa

Windows CD not's the installation of audio drivers which results in volume icon being reflected.

I would uninstall the audio drivers/controller via Device Manager (Sound, Video and Game Controllers)...then reboot and reinstall the correct audio drivers for the system or motherboard (available for download at the appropriate manufacturer's website.

My volume icon keeps disappearing. I go to the notification box for the icons and the volume box is dimmed so I can't even check it so that it stays. I have to constantly restart the computer until I see it. Why can't I get it to stay in the taskbar permanantly?

Hello all,
I've been working on my wifes computer, a Gateway MX7525 running Windows XP Pro.
She was infected with the photosnap trojan and I was able to finally remove it and get most things running correctly but the volume icon has disappeared from the taskbar and I cannot get it to come back, I have checked to make sure the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" is checked and that it is set to "always show" from the hide inactive icons selection.
Have also noticed that Adobe Flash does not have any sound when playing movies through IE7 and when trying to access internet options through the tool bar I get a message that states "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.
The last thing is that the volume control buttons no longer work, when pressed the onscreen display pops up but the slider does not move.
I have removed the sound card drivers and reinstalled them, I've also removed and reinstalled flash player but that hasn't helped.
The sounds in everything else works like it should though.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Denis, and Welcome to TSF!

There are a couple of ways to rectify this pesky critter (the Volume Icon) misbehaving, so lets try these two Steps....

(You will need your Windows? XP CD)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in the Drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting....

Now go Start > Run and enter these commands....(hit Enter after each command.)

Enter your CD/DVD Drive letter (I will use E: for this excercise.)

cd i386

expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

(Please note the space between the ex_ and the c:)

Once you hit enter this time you will notice that the file will be 'expanded by an amount of about 145%'.

When it is finished, type exit; remove the CD.

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
2. Click Services and Applications.
3. Double-click Services.
4. Scroll down in the Services list, right-click SSDP Discovery Service, and then click Properties.
5. On the General tab, in the Startup type drop-down list, click Disabled.
6. Click OK.

Close all windows and reboot the computer.

Upon restart, all should now be normal (hopefully).

Post back with the results, and if there are any other queries/concerns.

Hi all.

For the past month or so I've had this simple problem that I can't seem to fix.

Every so often I click on the volume icon. The cursor indicates something is loading. Nothing happens. I try and try again, still nothing. I restart my computer--problem fixed, for a while and then it happens again.

Note: Every time it happens, I can right click and it seems to be working perfectly. When I click "Open Volume Mixer" though, it just acts like it's loading and nothing happens again. My only other option is:

I go to "Sounds" >> Playback Tab >> "Speakers" properties (the playback device I use) >> Levels

Window freezes. Every time. All the other tabs work. I try to close the window, which isn't responding, and I always get the message

"Windows Shell Common Dll is not responding"

From what I know about these things, the Dll is not functioning properly or is missing. Can someone help me find out how to fix it please?

Thank you.

It just occurred to me that there are many of us that work on one platform on our desktop, but different on our phones or tablets.

Does anyone know of any source for lists of applications that can utilize the same data on each environment? I am thinking that a good cross reference would be good to help us select applications on each environment and if some resource became popular enough, it could lead software vendors to support a variety of data formats in each environment they support, or provide import/export capabilities to support those of us who use multiple platforms.

My personal preference is to use open source or free/inexpensive software, but the need becomes greater when tools in those realms don't exist.

If nobody knows of an existing source, I think I might start something... A listing of programs that can share files for two or more of the following platforms would be a start:

Windows Desktop
Windows Metro (or whatever they are calling it)

In my mind, a program would be included if any of the following applied:

a) Versions exist for multiple platforms
b) Works via web
c) Works directly with files from an app on a different platform

A:acer lcd volume icon problem

Could you provide a screen shot of this? You do mean SOUND volume, right? Do you still have a tiny speaker icon in the system tray area? Try to double click on this to get to more settings.

I have been checking for three days as how to recover the volume control icon for my taskbar. I have tried everything from reloading XP, to finding a sndvol32 on another disk and loading via instrcutions I found on the net and I still can't get it back. Right now I am using a copy of the volume panel that is displayed when opening the volume icon that is in Documents and Settings. It's clumsy but it works.

Help someone please!!!

I have lost the volume icon on the task bar. When I go to Multimedia and Sounds in Control panel, it says that I dont have any sound driver. When I go to Start, Accessories, Entertainment and Volume. When I click on volume it does nothing. I have tried to restore back to when I know I had sound and it still does not bring it back. I am running windows ME. What can I do?

A:No sound and volume icon has disappeared

Sounds like your soundcard driverh has been corrupted or is missing altogether.

look in device manager are there any devices that show a yellow question mark or yellow triangle next tot hem? if there is then you need to reinstall the drivers for your sound.

I have a presario 700 laptop running XP. For months now I can't find the volume icon in the taskbar. My dialup starts screeching (I played some music yesterday) and I have to open control panel and then click on the sounds & volume icon, then click mute. To put the icon back in the taskbar I need to uncheck the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" command and APPLY. Then check the command and APPLY again.

How can I put the icon back into taskbar permanently? And why did it leave taskbar in the first place?
