I have an orange flash error code on my power light (1 long flash 3 short 1 long 2 short 1 long 1 short).....

I have to take the power connector out battery out and start by battery to get it to work......

I'm using Toshiba's windows 7 image with all updates from Microsoft (now I NEEDED a lot of the for verying reasons so don't grill me yet... eg DON"T LOAD MICROSOFT UPDATES blah blah blah)

What does this code mean and is there a Beta Bios above version 3 for these things......

Any helpful comments would be greatly appriciated......

A:Portege M750 doesn't start - power LED flashes

Short means 0, long means 1.
In your case the binary code is 1000 1001
Now you have to reverse the binary code due to most significant bit.
This means the code is; 1001 0001
The HEX code means; 91h

So error code is 91h but I don?t know what 91h means and what part could be affected exactly!

Possibly it?s something wrong with power supply electronic on the motherboard? but only the ASP technician could provide more details?
However, in most cases the motherboard is affected and should be replaced.

Since I remmember I use my laptop with enable sleep and hibernate features.
A couple of days ago it started not to restart after sleep or hibernate.

You have to take ou the battery and AC power and then it starts but without assuming the sleep/hibernate.

Another thing is that when you press the switch on button the AC power led, which is green normally, it starts blinking yellow with some sort of a code long and short flashes.

This happens with different operating systems cause I tried to reinstall and the problem persists.

A:Portege M750 doesn't restart after sleep or hibernate

> Another thing is that when you press the switch on button the AC power led, which is green normally, it starts blinking yellow with some sort of a code long and short flash

I know that if there is a memory malfunction the *Power indicator* will repeatedly flash on and off (0.5sec) If there is an error in slot A the indicator would flash orange twice then green.
If there is an error in slot B, the LED will flash orange once and green twice.
If error is in both slots, the LED flashes orange and green twice.

By the way: is your BIOS up to date?

Windows XP Home SP2.
Pretty often clicking on my sound icon (Which IS present in the system tray), does not open the volume control slider. When this happens I go to Control Panel but Sound controls won't open from that location either. There's no way to control the volume and must reboot to get it back (temporarily, because it keeps happening).

Do I possibly need driver updates? If so, which one of these is my sound card?
SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device

Or is it an XP problem.

A:Sound icon is there but doesn't bring up volume control

Hi all,

can anyone help i got 2 spare batteries for my protege m750-11w and they dont work and i'm wondering do i need to do a BIOS update for them. The batteyr in my protege is PA3191U-5BRS and the two new batteries are both PA3191U-1BAS and it said that this battery would work where the -5BRS was in use.

I have updated my BIOS already from version 1.6 to version 3 and the battery still doesnt work i just get a white cursor flashing in the top left hand corner.

Does anyone know where i can obtain a BIOS update to except this battery?

A:Portege M750-11W - New battery won't work

That means Windows doesn?t start with new battery and you see only the flashing cursor?
That?s strange? Have you connected the AC/DC adaptor?

In my opinion you should fully charge the battery before you start Windows. After this try it again.

Is my M750 tablet 64 bit capable?
I'd like to install 8G of ram and be able to use that amount.....
The processor will run 64 bit, the motherboard will support 8G, but will the rest of the system?

A:Portege M750 - is it 64bit capable?

Do you want to know if your Win 7 would recognize the 8GB RAM?
In order to use more than 4GB RAM three components needs to support this;
- chipset
- OS 64bit

As far as I know some of the M750 supports the Mobile Intel(R) GM45 Express Chipset.
This chipset is 8GB capable so it should be able to use 8GB RAM.
In such case I think that BIOS would also recognize 8GB RAM.

You can install any OS. You can use Win 7 64bit and I don?t see any reasons why this should not work

as described I use a Logitech G510 keyboard with multimedia keys and the posibility to insert a headset into it (the keyboard got its own soundcard). The keyboard also got a volume wheel which worked with Vista like it should: I could controle the speaker's volume by the keyboard.

Now with Win 7 I can't use the wheel anymore, even with the latest drivers. Does anyone know this problem?

My system:

Hi Everyone,

I have a Portege M750 Model PPM75A-007010 and I need to change the CMOS (RTC) battery.

Can anyone share with me
- where to find this battery
- is this the normal round battery and if you can tell me the battery number?
- or where can I purchase this battery and price range?

A:Portege M750 - CMOS (RTC) Battery replacement

Normally the RTC batteries in these models are rechargeable.
If not yet done, please let the unit run overnight (not off, not hibernated, not standby - but ON) and see if the issue is resolved.

I think the charge-description/characeristics of the RTC battery is mentioned in your users manual.

I'm having difficulties installing the tablet buttons in WINDOWS 8.1 Pro. Everything else works, perfectly.

In Windows 8 Pro this buttons worked nicely, but now, after a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro two of the buttons don't work. The buttons are the Toshiba assist button and the presebtation button. I've tried to configure them in Toshiba assist software but nothing happens.

I'm sure I've installed all drivers that made wverything work with Windows 8. As anyone tryed this and add success?

A:Portege M750 and Win8.1 Pro -tablet buttons don't work

> I'm sure I've installed all drivers that made wverything work with Windows 8

Windows 8.1 is not Windows 8 and many of Toshiba Win 8 drivers and tools don?t work or are not fully compatible with Win 8.1

As far as I know the Toshiba does not support Win 8.1 on this Portege M750.
This means that no Win 8.1 drivers will be released and in such case some notebook features like the control buttons could not work properly.

Fact is that using Windows Vista or Win 7, such buttons were controlled by Value Added Package. This package does not exist for Win 8.1 and has been replaced by other software called Toshiba System Driver

So in case you want to try to get the buttons to work, I recommend checking this with Toshiba System Driver

just wanted to leave a message with the solutions I found for different applications for Portege M750.
These are the applications I use the most,
so if you need other drivers/applications just leave a reply and I'll try to find it.

_Got working:_
Bluetooth and 3G driver and therefore the GPS ( [Toshiba Europe|] )
Screen Buttons, except the Toshiba Assist and Presentation button.
Both opens this: [Buttons| f=1] ,

Which I find more useful then the old functions.
Installed Value Added Package, I think from here: [Go to download section| d=2266999&os=&ct=SB&selFamily=1073768662] . The one from europe site didn't worked.

FingerPrint utility.
Control Panel -> User Accounts and Family Safety -> User Accounts and you have an option in the left side of the window for fingerprints. Installed the drivers and programs, works like a charm. Or search on google for TrueSuite

For the ctrl+al+arrow to flip the screen, I used iRotate (google it).

Still no solution for the HDD protection utility, yet.

A:Portege M750 PPM75E Windows 8 drivers - SOLUTION

Many Win7 drivers would work with Win 8 system.
But there are still some drivers and utilities which are not fully compatible.
I?ve got a tip for you:
As far as I know the HDD protection Utility is not a model related software.
You could try to install the Win 8 HDD protection Utility released for Prot?g? Z930

Would be really interesting to know if it works.

I just bought I used Portege M750 because my M700 was broken. Unfortunately, the select bays between both models are not compatible. Although the availability of a 2nd hdd caddy is mentioned in the users manual, I couldn't find the part no of the HDD caddy for the M750. I tried a standard SATA-SATA HDD caddy, but I get an "select bay error" message on startup, although the caddy works in windows as long as you don't hibernate.

Does anyone know the part no of the genuine 2nd hdd caddy for Portege M750 / M780? Or is there another 2nd hdd caddy which does work with the M750 without any restrictions?

A:Portege M750 - 2nd HDD caddy in select bay instead of optical drive

I assume you will need an Hard drive caddy part number: P000452980
Then you could place this into the Toshiba's Ultra Slim HDD Adaptor PA3408U-1ETC and PA3408U-2ETC

But you can also contact the Toshiba ASP in your country to get an confirmation...

I cannot get TOSHIBA Wireless Manager (3G) to work in a new installation of Win 7 64 bit.

I made a successful trial installation of Windows 7 64-bit on and old SATA hard disk drive and checked that TOSHIBA Wireless Manager would work. It did.

I then made a new installation of Windows 7 64-bit on a new Crucial C300 Real SSD 256GB.

The new installation with the Crucial SSD is not very successful.... The "shutdown and restart" operation does not work -- the shutdown does not always power off completely and you have to hold the power switch down to power off.

Sometimes the SSD will not boot -- you enter the BIOS password but then nothing happens. Sometimes you have to power down and take the battery out before the drive will boot.

But the biggest problem is that the Wireless Manager (3G) will not work. The application opens and states that "Radio is turned off" -- which it can't be as I'm using the WiFi to post this question.

I have tried installing the Vodafone 3G software. This detects the presence of the "mobile device" (SIM card in the slot) but then cannot enable it.

I have downloaded and installed all the latest chip drivers, the 3G driver, 3G software, LAN driver, LAN software and all Windows 7 updates.

I have the latest BIOS (3.0) but this has not been updated by Toshiba since 04/11/09.

I note that the Toshiba PC Diagnostic Tool does not recognize the 8G memory installed (but ccleaner does):

Model Name ... Read more

A:Portege M750 Win7 64bit Wireless Manager (3G) will not work

points to a firmware issue on the SSD drive (is it sandforce) coupled to BIOS incompatability of the SSD.

i presume all the drivers etc installed were identical on the HDD trial install? so if thats the case it has to be the SSD not communicating with the BIOS correctly, hence the other issues as well

I have installed Windows 7 afresh on a Portege M750 and everything seems fine except the buttons on the display to handle tablet functions. The only one I really would like to work is the screen orientation one. I've looked for drivers, but can't find any that will control the tablet buttons. I read that for the M700 you need to download the tablet driver as it contains the drivers for the buttons, but no such driver exists for the M750.

All devices are ok in device manager with none requiring drivers.

Any ideas/thoughts/suggestions are very welcome.

I have installed win7 64 bit ("fresh install" on my M750-129) and i have also downloaded and installed all the newest drivers from toshiba website.
the device manager shows no problem / drivers needed, and trhings like HDD protection work well.

However, i have four groups of problems i would love and appreciate to find answer:

1) when i change the screen position to tablet, it does not change the orientation nor the resolution.
There is no utility to set the desired orientations of screen as it was in vista (horribly unstable and slow OS, though).
This, naturally, is diminishing the usefullness of the tablet finction

2) the buttons do not work properly; the screen rotation button starts excel (!!) , the centre of mobility button starts word (!!), and the toshiba assistance button does not work at all

3) fingerprints: the fingerprint utility lets me to screen my fingerprint, asks if it should save it, and than says "saving impossible; another duplicate pattern exists" which i completely do not understand what it means...

4) some applications are not available at all after fresh install: face recognition, DVD player, bussines card screener - but i can love without those; 1-3 worries me much much more and i would appreciate any functional help. thanx on advance for any try!

A:Portege M750 tablet, buttons and fingerprint functions not working in win7

I think you would need an extension package in order to use the tablet functions on the Portege series.
I didn?t find the Tablet PC Extension Package for Win 7 but there is an package for Win Vista.

Usually many tools and drivers which were released for Vista would work with Win 7.
So in my opinion you should try to install additionally this Tablet PC Extension Package.
I think this should solve the issue with the buttons too!

Regarding the fingerprint;
I think the message means that an fingerprint was already registered and therefore an second save is not possible.
Check if you can delete other fingerprints?

The sound volume on my R500 (R500-11c to be exact) is ridiculously low. Only with volume maxed out (100) and using headphones do I hear anything at all, and even then it's way too low to be useful. I can just make out the test sounds in the left and then right earphone when using the test sound found at Control Panel -> Sound -> Speakers (there are no Headphones to be selected) -> Properties -> Advanced -> Test. Unplugging the headphones I hear nothing from the speakers, due to the (very low) sounds made by the fan and HDD. Playing music (with headphones) I can just make out that sounds are being produced, but I can't even make out what is playing.

I've tested the things mentioned in the "Satellite 5105-S901 Sound is very low (even on max volume) using supplied Toshiba driver" thread with no success (including Loudness Equalization).

I'm running Vista Business 32bit, and have tried the driver_audio_realtek26117B.exe, driver_audio_realtek_TC00157600B.exe, and Vista_Win7_R243_x86.exe driver files, and also used the util_mute_off_25847B.exe utility.

Enabling mute makes the already faint sounds go completely silent, so I don't think it's a mute issue.

Jack detection does work, I can see that in the Realtek HD Audio Manager program. Using that program's sound test (Speaker Configuration) I have to go to a completely silent room, and even then I only hear something in the right earphone. (I think; it's so darn low I could be imagining I hear it... Read more

A:Very low sound volume on Portege R500

According to your message, you have already tried to increase the volume using all possible options?
Did you try to increase the volume in control panel -> Realtek HD audio manager??
Check this?

You have also tried to update the Realtek sound driver?.
Did you use the one from the Realtek page directly?

The sound control wheel in my Satellite Pro U400 no more works properly since last month.

Now I have to use the volume bar in Vista to adjust it properly. When I try to decrease volume by rotating the wheel as I did before, it constantly raises the volume after decreasing it just a few percent. If I rotate it very very slow, sometimes it decreases the volume a bit but other times increases it. Also when I am in a word processor, rotating the wheel to the right inputs character "c"' on the screen.
There is no problem when I try to increase the volume, it does its job.

Do you think it is related to hardware or can it be a driver problem or something. Is there a solution?

Thank you

A:Satellite Pro U400 - sound control wheel stopped working

In your case I would install a newer sound driver. Look on the Toshiba website and check it: => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers

I have now installed Windows 7 on my R500 to prepare for Windows XP's end of life.
I experienced that now with Windows 7 the sound does not really work.

The build-in loudspeaker does not work and an externally connected speaker with amplifier can just get some sound in max amplification. I googled and saw many people having similar issues.

Does anybody know if Toshiba has a fix for this ?

Do other people with Portege laptops have the same issue ?

Thank you

A:Portege R500 - Low sound volume with Win 7 and Realtek driver

As far as I know the Portege R500 supports the Realtek ALC262
I've googled and found people having problems with low sound volume on other laptops from other manufacturers using the ALC262 chip

But I found the solutions :)
Download the small ?Sound Utility to Turn Mute Off After Upgrading to Vista?
[Sound Utility to Turn Mute Off |] and unzip it using WinRAR or WinZip
You will find a small file called 'MuteOff'. Run this file as administrator and check if your sound would work.

Note: All drivers should be installed as well as the Realtek sound driver.

Feedback would be appreciated

I'm running Windows XP SP2 and I have all my sound drivers installed (I can get sound just fine in every app), but I can't control the main volume in the Volume Control. I can adjust the volume with the Wave slider, but the main one doesn't do anything, including mute. Individual applications' volume controls work fine too, just not the main Windows one. It wouldn't be a problem, but it might be the reason why I'm not getting any volume on the Stereo Mix recording option. I just finished a clean install of XP (for a different reason) and it wasn't working before, either. Any ideas?

A:Tecra P5 - Volume control doesn’t work properly

As far as I know volume control in the past was mechanical but now it works on different way and it is controlled by specific tool/utility.
To be honest Tecra P5 is not known to me but obviously it is Australian notebook model and according to Australian support page this notebook model is not supported for Windows 7.

That doesn?t mean you cannot use it but this means there is not software package designed for Windows 7 that can be installed so I think there is no much you can do about it.

I know it is annoying but for volume control you can use Windows option placed in task bar.

Yesterday I reinstalled Windows 7 on my notebook PC. I had to use a Microsoft installation disk because unfortunately, serious errors resulted after I installed from the HP recovery program. Consequently the HP drivers that were installed automatically with the recovery program weren't installed on my system. I had to install several of them from the HP support site. I got everything to work except for the Touch volume control, or the Volume Scroll Zone as referred to by HP in the service guide. This is the device located just above the keyboard that increases or decreases speaker volume when you drag you finger on it. I installed the Quick Launch button driver but that only applied to the mouse and pointer touchpad. I looked at the devices listed in my startup configuration. I saw the synaptics pointing device and the HP quick launch buttons listed. So is the IDT PC audio driver.  What am I missing? Where I can I find it to activate the touch volume control?

I purchased a new computer (well second hand) and installed a fresh version of XP Pro on it. The computer now does not have sound or a volume control in the task bar. I assume the computer did have sound previously as there were a large assortment of video and music files.

When I search for volume control and click on them I get this message:
"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices go to control panel, click printers and other hardware and then add hardware.

The program will now close"

On the side of the computer it has the following listed as its audio device:
Integrated Realtek ALC658 Digital Audio. Dolby 5.1 surround sound ready'
Anyway, i downloaded a Realtek ALC658 driver from google and still no use.

Hello, All! This is my first problem request so if I forget something please humor me.

Yesterday I played a YouTube video on my eMachines laptop (reconditioned, and purchased in 2004, that has worked just fine all this time but I know has to be replaced). When I tried to play this video for my daughter, the slider on the volume control in the system tray and the slider on the Windows player refused to hold the volume I wanted and slid to the low position, causing the sound to be nil.

I went to a Windows forum and searched for the problem - to no avail - but downloaded SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition to check to see if I had bugs. Aside from the usual ad-related stuff, it found something called Trojan.Agent/Gen-Krpytik which it subsequently quarrantined and I deleted. However, that seemed not to have solved the problem.

Then I looked in my Bookmarks and found you lovely folks. Since I'd forgotten the name/password I'd used the last time I had a problem, I joined again, and spent two or three hours searching for a post describing the same problem. Today I continued by lonely search with no more success than I had yesterday.

I'm posting in hopes that you will be able to help me with this. There was one person who had a similar problem some time ago, but that post had never been answered. Help, please?

Many thanks and bright blessings!

A:No sound due to sliding volume control

Does it slide down on its own? Maybe one of the hotbuttons on the keyboard that turns the volume down is stuck.

When I click (once) on the little speaker in my system tray, a volume slider comes up. Whenever you click on the slider, it makes a tone, presumably so you can hear how much it needs to be adjusted. It should make a "ding" and "click" sound, but instead I'm getting the system beep, which is always the same volume. It used to work like I wanted it to, but I recently reinstalled the OS, and I don't remember having to change anything for this. I have looked through the sound effects listed in the "Sounds and Multimedia" applet in the Control Panel (I'm using W2K), but none of the listed settings seem to affect this sound. I've even looked through the registry for "beep", but I didn't see anything that was clear as to what it was intended to do. Where do I go to make this adjustment? I also noticed that, when using MSN Messenger, the popup tray notification (for when someone on your list logs in) is using the system beep sound instead of what it's supposed to use.

Hi there,

Bit of a weird problem here. The sound was working absolutely fine on my PC until recently. The machine is second hand, but according to my control panel, I have an M-Audio Delta Audiophile soundcard installed. This hasn't been changed. When I first got the machine, I ran the audio through the in-built speakers on my monitor. Then, briefly, I ran it through a stand-alone speaker. The sound came out of the machine just fine at this stage. When I moved the audio to go back through the monitor, it would not come through. I then tried to run it back through the speaker, but still no joy.

Now, as I've already said, this machine was second hand, and in the time I've had it, I didn't fiddle about with any of the audio settings through control panel, so I can only assume that the ones I see before me now are the ones that were presented to me when I got the machine. However, the first major thing that I notice is different is that I no longer have a speaker icon on my task bar. When I go into Sound and Audio Device Settings, the Device Volume section is greyed out. As are the speaker settings options. I cannot hear system sounds either.

I have two system conflicts in device manager - both of them are listed as RAID Controller. I have no idea what these are, so I'm not sure if they would be causing anything, but as I've not added anything new to the system, I should have thought that these would have been present when I received the machine.

So, I'm at a bit ... Read more

I have speakers plugged in to my computer running Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit. The computer is recognizing that I have speakers plugged in and when I play something the green bar moves with the music. However, no sound is coming from the speakers. I have gone into the BIOS settings and enabled onboard audio. All sliders are at their full volume. I have unplugged and replugged the speakers, rebooted, shut down, uninstalled and reinstalled the sound driver, all to no avail. I have eliminated the possibility of the speakers being broken by testing them with an iPod.

Any help is appreciated.

I have a dell windows 8.1. Everything has been fine for a long time and now... no sound. I must admit to never really understanding how sound works on my laptop. After some fiddling around I managed to get some sound - but only when speakers are plugged into the headphone socket. Now my PC controls make no difference to the volume. I think the ss below suggests that I want the sound to go through the 'speakers headphones' but the sound level meter says its using the communications headphones.
This is what I have for my sound card.

The same happens when I stream audio - only works if headphones connected and no control over the column from pc.

Lastly, when I right click on the top one and click test it says 'failed to play test tone'

Can anyone help please?

Many thanks

A:sound only works with headphones - no control over volume

The first thing I see is you do not have the correct sound driver. You only have the generic, basic function, Windows installed High Definition Audio Codec (Driver).

First step is to install the correct hardware sound driver. Not enough system spec's provided so I can't research what you need. If its a factory built PC, go to the PC vendor and download the Win 8.1 driver. If its custom built, go to the motherboard vendor for the driver.

Hello guys,

I searched the forum for common problems but unfortunately I could not find any useful information for this issue.

I hope you can assist me as the Windows 7 volume mixer is freaking me out and I cant seem to find a way out with this...

I run Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron 6400 and I use the volume buttons on front a lot to increase/decrease/mute the sounds... however this feature is not working with Windows 7 or maybe I have not fixed the correct settings.

Also I have a Logitech MX610 mouse with volume buttons on it that don`t work as well.

Here is a screenshot of the volume mixer.. I`m not sure if that`s helpful..

Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance guys

viachy, welcome to the forums.

For the volume buttons on the laptop, is there or did you install a driver for it? It may or may not be needed, but from the sounds of it, it is.

For the mouse, what version of Setpoint do you have installed? The latest is 4.80 (for Vista, but works well in 7),

I have an older Dell Inspiron with WINXP. Over the past week or two I've been burning a lot of CD's to iTunes, typically listening to them while they copy.

Today I just wanted to play a song in iTunes but speakers were quiet. I checked speaker volume, it's on. Task bar, it's showing that it's mute. So I single click the speaker icon, and it does not show that sound is mute. Volume is at 75%. I also opened the volume control panel and same thing, none of the mute buttons are showing mute.

While typiing this post, I had some other ideas... when I opened Quicktime it went into an install process. I then tried playing an song in itunes and it works fine. HOWEVER, the task bar speaker still shows mute.

Question: Why does the taskbar show MUTE when I can play music and the actual volume control does not show mute? (If I open the volume control and click mute, it mutes but the icon does not change).

Thank you very much,

I have a friend who bought a new microphone for her laptop, which runs Windows XP Home Edition. The mic is one of the ones with the pink input plug, which her laptop does support. When she plugs it in and tries to record something, it's just dead silence.

I tried to walk her through un-muting the mic, but she has no options for that under Sound/Volume control. Under Options->Properties there is no option to select Microphope or Line In to be enabled in the main window.

I got her to update her sound drivers, but it didn't help, either.

Anyone have any idea what might be wrong, and why there is no way to enable microphone settings under the Sound/Volume control section? Thanks...

Hi all,

Just joined up....
What I want is actually the opposite of what most people are looking for.
I want to install windows 8 on my kids computer but want the volume level to be set at a certain level so the sound is not to high no matter what they do.

I am able to achieve this right now as the desktop is on XP and i have the wave bar set to a certain level so no matter how high they put the volume bar it just stays at a certain level.I have hidden the wave bar so they cannot even get at it by mistake.

The main thing is that I am using a sidewinder X4 keyboard which has the vol+/- so they can easily increase the volume even if I hide the volume tab from the desktop in windows 8, while in XP it remained a certain lvel even if they put it upto 100%.

I have been searching for win 8 mixers where I could maybe have the same type of control as the XP but so far have found nothing.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated and used

I'm having a little problem here which I wasn't quite able to solve using the official Creative Support.

First a little explanation:
Before installing my new Sound Blaster ZxR I had to temporarily use the Onboard Sound of my Asus Rampage IV Black Edition because of a SLI Water cooling component blocking the necessary PCI Port of the former Sound Card ( a Sound Blaster Recon3D Fatal1ty Professional ).

Because of the cracking ( grounding loop? ) I receive during the startup when using 3.5mm jacks ( or 1/4" with the ZxR ) I stopped using them whenever possible and instead started using the Toslink connection on both the Recon3D AND the RIVBE as it electrically disconnects the PC from the Sound System.

Now here comes the Problem:
Using the new Sound Blaster ZxR and having it connected via Toslink to my Sound System I'm not able to control the Volume using...

A:Sound Blaster ZxR and Toslink - No System Volume Control

I have a recording studio and use Toslink's. I have to control the volume level in my recording program. There are level controls on my recording interface unit (Roland Octa-Capture) but it is for analog only.

In a PC, when you use a digital output, that bypasses all (or most all) of the sound card as the device its feeding is the one that has the volume level control. I suspect this also applies to what you have, as it apparently works the way my Toslink works (the level control in the application program).

Hello everyone, I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop running Windows Vista. I recently bought a USB audio sound card (since my computer's headphone jack was damaged).

The volume control on my computer has always worked fine, but when I plug in the sound card I'm no longer able to control the volume via the sound icon on the taskbar. The sound card's volume always comes in full blast, and I can only lower it through the controls in the program it's currently running (i.e. the volume control in a YouTube video). Therefore, when I try to control it directly through my computer it doesn't work.

Is this a common problem? Is there any way I can get this fixed or configured, or is there a problem with the sound card?

A:USB Sound Card - system volume control not working

As this is a software issue my response has to be quite limited. Basically, you may need to check a box specifying your default audio device in your sound settings. Hope this helps, if not drop your question into the software section.

Hey there! A few days ago I changed my hdd because the last one got corrupted and had a lot of bad sectors so I installed a new windows 7 OS. Everything was smooth until the sound suddenly stopped. I wasn't doing anything in particular. I noticed the green bar on the volume control is moving but I had no sound. I plugged headphones in - same thing. Anyways it fixed with a reboot and I thought it was a one time bug. But it happened 4 times already and the only other thing that fixes it beside rebooting is uninstalling the sound device from the device manager and installing it again. What is causing this? I downloaded my Realtek drivers and I ran them with the setup.exe file and they are currently installed on my PC but they don't seem to do anything. These are pictures from the various things I wanted you to see that look normal:

What may be causing this and how can I fix it?

A:No audio but the green sound bar on the volume control is moving?

Welcome to the Windows 7 Forum.

The first thing I see is you do not have the correct sound driver installed. I don't know what your hardware is but what is listed is the "High Definition Audio Device" which is the Windows installed generic sound driver. You should install the correct driver from your PC vendor.

In addition I see the NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device and that has caused some problems in the past. Temporarily disable that in the Device Manager and see if that helps.

Please fill in the "My System Specs". It helps us to try and help you.

Recently I went through a day of torture by an unsuccessful attempt to System Restore. I lost a display driver from some inadvertent deletion in either Sytem Mechanic or some other registry cleanup program. I tried several solutions, then, perhaps prematurely, reinstalled Windows XP Pro. Experiencing further difficulties, I then reinstalled Service Pack 1, which fixed the display problem pretty much. BUT... some sound problems developed:

a) I was no longer able to locate any volume or play control. I found an article in the Windows Knowledge Base that told me how to install the play control panel through the command prompt from my XP Pro disk. This fixed this problem... But...

b) While I can now control the volume through the sys tray icon and the play control panel, I no longer have this function on my keyboard! I reinstalled the keyboard software from a download site, and the keyboard's shortcut button functions all work BUT NOT the volume control. The mute button works fine, but NOT the volume control buttons (the - and + buttons). They were working fine previous to my reinstalling Windows. I fear that some registry file or setting needs fixing.

c) Lately I have discovered a final and third problem. There is no sound recorder in my files! I find NO sound recorder in my Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment section, nor anything like this by conducting a file search. It seems that this recorder didn't get installed when I reinstalled Windows. Is there a file... Read more

A:No Sound Recorder in Windows XP and Can't Use Volume Control on Keyboard!

Check Device manager and particularly the Keyboard and Sound items. If either have yellow marks or don't agree with what you know to be the correct item, delete all of the listings and ask for a new detection, as you can do there.

Even if there are no apparent problems shown there, delete those two items anyway, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Windows will pick them up again and perhaps you'll get lucky.

Beyond that, be certain that you are supplying the correct drivers for the enhanced keyboard that you apparently have and if you have sound card drivers, supply those instead of letting Windows do a default selection for you. Normally XP does well that way, but you're evidently not a normal case.

Good luck.

Did it before? The Windows volume control doesn't affect any of my players volumes, so if I have Winamp open for example, adjusting the volume with the Windows mixer control doesn't move the Winamp slider, nor does it move the WMP slider, which is why I leave Windows volume at full, and adjust the volume from within what ever program I'm using to watch a film or play music.

I recently bought a dell computer second-hand from my friend, who had XP installed on it. It came with a subwoofer and a set of 4 regular speakers. On it, he had installed a form of creative volume control in addition to windows volume. The way it worked was he had the windows volume set to 100% at all times, and the creative volume control around 3% for regular browsing, 10-25% for gaming and 50% or higher for rocking out with music. I recently acquired windows 7 home premium x64 and upgraded my operating system. My soundblaster card has all the necessary drivers and the audio is all hooked up properly, and the only thing missing is this form of volume control. After looking around for the old software and trying a few different freeware and shareware programs, nothing has pulled through for me; any suggestions?

Also sending shortcuts i.e ALT+TAB is supported.

I have problems with an application written in Visual Basic. The application is supposed to be able to control the volume of different output channels of the sound card RME Fireface 800. Within the VB application direct sound is used to control the volume.

However, volume control changes work for some of the assigned channels but not for others. Looking at Window's volume control mixer it can be confirmed that the output channels are correctly assigned to the application but the volume control changes are ignored for some of the channels.

The application and the volume control changes worked fine with the same application and sound card on a Windows XP machine.

I'm thankful for any suggestion on how to solve or work around the problem.

I've long used Winamp while watching videos on my computer. They've always peacefully co-existed but now things have changed. I did a clean install of Windows and now Winamp is dramatically louder than any other movie file I play. Games and program sounds are just fine but movies seem to have sound issues.

It isn't that Winamp is louder than normal, it is very much at the volume it has always been. Movies are just sooo friggin quiet now. I have to turn my speaker volume all the way up, turn the media player volume all the way up, and then turn the Windows volume all the way to max for the WAV slider. It is ridiculous.

I even loaded an ASF file into Windows Media Player, Windows Media Player Classic, The Core Media Player, and PowerDVD. All had the exact same super low volume. I loaded that same video into Winamp and it sounded so much louder. I had the video playing in Winamp and WMP Classic at the same time and the difference is crazy. So what is going on? Why does Winamp get normal volume but all other sources that play video files get super low sound?

I considered a codec problem, sound card problem, and/or a media player program issue, but then Winamp wouldn't be able to play a video at normal volume. Does anybody know what might be going on?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4344 laptop running Windows XP. Unfortunately, the volume scroll wheel broke off and actually got pushed into the laptop. For some reason this scroll wheel controls the master volume, and presides over all other controls, and now that it has broken off I can't get any sound.

I've tried to do some research and found that if it was running Unbuntu, then I could disable some sort of keyboard shortcut. Here's the thread . But I have yet to find some solution regarding Windows XP.

I honestly could care less to have a functional scroll wheel, thats why I haven't sent it in. Plus $300 to fix a simple scroll wheel seems way too much.

I was hoping that someone could offer a few suggestions as to how I could disable or bypass the volume wheel and ultimately get my sound back. I'm sure anyone with a Toshiba satellite and a similar problem could benefit from this thread whether or not the problem gets fixed.

Thank all you for your time, and hopefully there IS a solution!

Previously had checked Start> Control Panel> Sound & audio devices ". Under AUDIO, tried to Ck [volume box]; got win error msg " Can not execute SNDVOL32EXE." " uSE "ADD/REMOVE - CONTROL PANEL ETC. "

sEARCH FOR SNDVOL32.EXE found it in C:\I386, ver 5.1.2600.0 ( xpclient .010817-1148). ( also found "EXPAND.exe & Extrac32.exe )

ok so this problem was just about from the beginning. i thought i would be patient and it would go away. at first i noticed that while using msn messenger, its volume control for voice chat controled the main volume for the whole pc. so if it was low things wouldnt sound as high as i wanted. no matter if i adjusted the main volume in the control panel, which was always set to highest, the volume would still be at the mercy of Msn M. so if it was lower than usual i would have to sign into msn m and adjust it. not only does this happen with msn m. it also happens with web video applications used by youtube, livevideo, etc etc! those arent usually the culprit of low sound. its usually just msn m. even now with live messenger i have the issue. im tired of being patient so here i am

Help please and thanks, Mary

Here is my hijackthis text file.

A:Control/C Control/V control/alter/delete doesn't work

Mary, keyboard problems are not invariably software or malware-related. First things first - what OS are you talking about ? XP, Win 7, Win 8 or what? What type of keyboard is it? PS2, USB or wireless?

Disconnect it and reconnect it a few times, reboot and try again. Turn the keyboard upside down, placing one end on the edge of a thick book, and thump a few times on the back with your hand. Sweep the crud onto the carpet.....

Is it just a keyboard hardware problem, and if so which keys? tells you a lot of key combinations with ctrl and shift and alt. Tell us if any or none work?

Open a document and try typing a bit of text. Do all the characters work?

If it appears the keyboard is faulty, can you borrow another to test?

Quite often, keyboard problems are down to wireless problems: and can often be solved by re-installing the keyboard driver.

Hello :)
I hope I put this in the right area..

I've been searching for a solution to this volume problem for a while now, but to no avail. I've found others with a similar problem, but no solution. So here's the deal: I just got a new motherboard, and ever since I got it my volume control has been faulty. First of all, all sounds are very quiet, even when all volume sliders are set to maximum. Next the main volme control has no effect whatsoever on the volume of the computer. I can can slide it all the way to the top, or all the way to the bottom, nothing changes. The only thing that makes any difference is the Wave control and it barely does anything. Also, when I put "Mute all" doesn't mute. However when I put mute for Wave control, no sound comes out.
All this is incredibly annoying because I often listen to music on my computer, but now I basically can't hear it. To note: I don't have a volume control on my keyboard, or on my speakers, and I know nothing is wrong with the speakers.

If anyone could help, I would really, really appreciate it. Thanks :)

A:Volume control issue-very quiet, main control uneffective

Are your speakers powered? If not you may have to invest in powered

Dear all,

I am in dire need of help to fix my laptop sound card. My laptop (TOSHIBA M600 on windows vista basic as its original operating system) has been working perfectly for the last 3 yrs. Just about 3 weeks ago the the volume icon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen had a red cross marked on it. I am no longer able to listen to online lectures, music, videos etc. I opened the device manager and found no such things as Sound, video and game controllers. This happened after one of my friend installed a faked windows 7. Since then i decided to buy and re-installed a legal window 7 professional, but the problem persists. The volume icon at the bottom of the screen still has a red cross on it.

Some kind people out there please help me...i am a student and cannot afford it to be fixed by those expensive computer genius in the computer store. Also....please use simple lay people english when you give instructions or help.

Thank you so much in advance

A:Portege M600 - Volume icon has a red cross on it

Hi buddy,

Usually such a red cross means that there is a no sound driver installed or driver is muddled up? Have you already tried to reinstall the sound driver?

What sound card you have installed?
Normally you can get all drivers on official Toshiba website but for an older model like yours I could imagine that you must check other pages. For example if you have a Realtek sound card, check the Realtek page directly:

I've been given an old IBM running Windows NT 4.0. The mouse it came with is a MS Intellimouse 1.2A PS/2, and the scroll wheel is not working. I tried reinstalling the driver that was on the computer. I also downloaded a driver file called vmouse.vxd, after hunting around the web for a bit, but I don't know where to copy this file to.
Is there any hope of getting the scroll wheel to work on WinNT?

You probably need to have all the Service Packs for NT installed, some mice have limited functionality otherwise. At least up to Service Pack 5.

Hi, i've been searching this issue on Google with literal no topic about it so i'll just make the first one here:

From a time i have an A4Tech V7 Gaming mouse that works perfect in Windows 7. Since a few weeks ago, after Microsoft deployed a patch on Windows 10, my scrolling wheel stopped working both on softwares and games. After 1-2 restarts it would go away and this kept on for about a week, and i guess after that, another patch was deployed that fixed it. Last night a new patch was deployed that returned the issue and this time, even after 3 restarts the scroll still doesn't work. Is there anything to be done so i don't have to wait anymore for those guys?

Clicking the scroll [Mouse3] works, scrolling up and down is what doesn't work.

A:Scroll wheel doesn't work anymore

Hi, can only suggest general things to do.
Have you tried uninstalling, reinstalling, updating the mouse driver?

Please try following the pattern of actions here:

Yes, it's talking about a Microsoft mouse, but the principles apply- just adapt as appropriate to your mouse.

Short Story
Wave meter in volume control keeps stopping. I googled it, seems to be a virus. Performed a virus scan, came up with nothing. Did it with another anti-virus program, also showed nothing. Need help. Thanks.

Long Story
So basically, I wanted to watch a youtube video. When I played it, there was no sound. Thinking it was a simple volume problem, I checked the video volume, the small icon on the taskbar, and even went into the control panel to adjust the volume settings. I thought it might be my headphones, but I tried using the speakers and neither worked. I tried doing the voice playback, and then I could hear my voice. I thought maybe it was fixed. Played the video, no sound. At that point I thought it was my sound card. I didn't want to replace it, so I kept trying to look for a better solution. After much frustration, I managed to make my way into the volume control. Start - Control Panel - Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices - Adjust the System Volume - Audio - Sound Playback: Default Device: SoundMAX Digital Audio - Volume - Wave. I saw that the Wave option was all the way down, and moved it up. After moving it, I could hear the video crystal clear, so I closed all the windows I didn't need anymore. Well, after about 30 seconds, the volume shut off again. I went back into volume control, and the wave bar was all the way down again. I raised it, and closed the window. I was looking for the apply button to become available, for I had assumed that not app... Read more

I'm running windows XP on an old Dell Inspiron 1501 and I'm trying to get my microphone to play directly through my speakers so I can record them both simultaneously. The only answer I've been finding is to tick the 'microphone' checkbox in the volume control playback properties panel, but I don't have a microphone checkbox. There should be a 'microphone' box under SW Synth and CD player but I don't get one apparently.I've downloaded the latest SigmaTel Audio drivers from Dell and despite not having a problem with them before this, I'm inclined to believe that they're the problem. Any ideas?

A:No microphone control in playback Volume Control panel

Okay well of course I find an answer right after posting the topic:

Those two pages detail how to get an Input Monitor checkbox which functions just like the microphone one I wanted (although you can only mute it, not alter the volume). I used Instructional Set 3 from the second page, having to add the 'RecMonitorMute' entry as detailed in the first page and I can now hear my microphone input directly through my speakers.

HOWEVER, I'm still unable to record both the microphone and speaker sound at the same time. I thought recording the 'Stereo Mix' channel with the microphone coming through the speakers would work but it isn't and I don't know why. Any ideas?

mmmm....actually i've had a very similiar problem....not quite sure how i fixed it though. Try updating your drivers for your soundcard, that might help. Also(obviously) go into control panel, and mess with things from there. Also, do you have any errors with any sound drivers of any kind? i know if....kind of nuke some of mine(stupid me) with an anti-adware program....if you have that could be part of the prob, and those usually aren't to hard to fix, just take a little time.

Hello, may be here somebody can help me.

After unknown causes, may be it was after hot swap RAM or another, suddenly my laptop Z30T-A doesn't start. How to say, after power press, there is 1 or 2 second fan sound and black screen and autoreboot. After reboot, i can see screen light with constant loud cooler sound and no action in future.

I try to start without battery, only with ac adapter - same situation... without ram or ssd - same situation.. i'l reconnect wifi adapter, keyboard, and all hardware components - same situation - no start.

After that, i'll give this laptop to my friend, who work in laptop service center.
After some tests he said, that may be problem with bios (bios can be suddenly deleted or another mistake, wich can provide no boot), or may by this problem with CPU.

I chose bios refresh, because it is cheapest option. My friend can unsolder bios chip and via special equipment upload a new one.

But we dont have bios for Z30T-A.
He said that all versions in support part on toshiba sites are unsuitable.

It's ok if u refresh, or upload this version via able to working laptop. I try to get bios via toshiba support e-mail, but they have only bin version and my friend claim that he need another one, not bin.... of course we can buy motherboard on ebay (in our country it is no toshiba laptop support) but this way is expensive.

A:Portege M400 - Windows 7 doesn't see the HDD

Hi Radzik,

I think Windows doesn?t see the HDD due missing RAID drivers? Windows needs such RAID drivers before you can install it because it doesn?t contain such drivers so the HDD is not recognized. You can download the RAID driver on Toshiba website.

Then you can create a new installation disk using nLite with the drivers or you copy the drivers on an external floppy drive. After booting from Windows XP you have to press F6 key to load the drivers from FDD.

Check this!!!

Hi everyone,

my almost new Portege Z30 doesn't start anymore. There is only one white light flashing - the one for DC/battery - but other than that: nothing happens :(

What can I do?
Thanks for your help and support.

A:Portege Z30- A-1FL doesn't power up anymore

Sorry to hear that?

Portege Z30 is very nice, good looking Ultrabook and as far as I know the notebook?s battery isn?t removable. Therefore the common workaround like removing the battery and pressing/holding the power button 30 sec long isn?t possible.

Anyway, I guess that notebook?s hardware started to malfunction and the fault localization will not be very easy. Usually the notebook engineer would use a special test and diagnostic software in order to find out what could be exactly wrong.

From my point the issue could be related to memory problem or motherboard malfunction and I guess both parts should be checked for possible issues.
