Q: Compaq Presario 5000 Mobo power connection

I have a presario 5000 and had to replace the motherboard. A know it all guy tried to use a different board and tried to rewire the power button connection on the board and messed it up. Does anyone have the proper wiring diagram for the power on button.

A: Compaq Presario 5000 Mobo power connection

What board did you have installed in the case? Is it aftermarket, or identical to the original. If you can find out the board make/model, you can dl the manual from the mfg's site and it should have a front panel wire diagram.

The computer is running windows XP and appears to run okay. The problem is that when it is shut down completely it goes to a Blue screen that says the following:

*Hardware Malfunction

***The system has Halted***
Like i said the computer seems to be running okay, but when it is shut down this is the message that comes up and it has to be turned off manually. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be or things i should check.

I have a really old computer (1999). and I had windows xp on it after having me since 1999. but after a few months of having xp on there it fried my hard drive (bought a new one). Now I am using Windows Vista home basic on my computer and it works fine. But the problem is that I can't find any drivers neccessary that will work with my OS.

The sound card is built into the motherboard I think, it's plug and play really.

I've been searching random sites all day for these drivers but none of them really seem to work?

I get an error screen: "Compaq Recovery CD Error" and then it says: "Please Contact Compaq Technical Support"

I tried looking at the topic on this before and I am at a loss in to what it all means..

I have the Start up recovery disk that came with the computer (has windows 98 on it). but it doesn't seem to work.Is there something I am doing that I am missing here?

I read something about acquiring another start up disk if so could I download one?
I am not to knowledgeable about computers.

A:Compaq Presario 5000 restore error

The CD may be damaged or dirty, try cleaning it with water and a soft cloth, wiping from the center out to the edge.

There will be no way to get a new one.

Sometimes people sell their old recovery discs on eBay, but you have to be very careful what you buy, descriptions can be misleading for this sort of item. You would have to find one that is for your Make and model of PC specifically, for it to work on your system.

I have winME installed on Compaq Presario 5000 with 700mhz celeron 64mb ram 15 gig drive with a DVD and CDRW.

The computer recognizes the DVD which works great but the CDRW is not recognized at all in control panel. The light on the CDRW blinks once on boot up. I took cover off and reseated all connections which are tight.

If I run compaq diagnostics, the computer locks up. If I add new hardware it never finds the CDRW drive.

I went to compaq help site online and ran a diagnostic there which worked without locking up. However the CDRW is not found on list of hardware.

I cannot figure out how to check bios to see if it is configured wrong.. BTW, I have an extra Creative Blaster CDRW(new) that could be installed, but since this compaq is new I hate to replace something in it without making sure it is broken. Also, I dont want to send my new computer off to a service center if I can fix it.

Any ideas on what I can do?

A:Power Problem with Compaq Presario 2200

Did you try removing the battery, yet keeping the adapter plugged in and booting? There is no internal battery - but if the laptop won't start with just the cord, then typically it's a larger hardware issue (motherboard, bad component, etc.)

Dear Friends,

Good day to everybody. i'd like to ask for your advice or opinion re: my computer trouble.

I have a Compaq Presario Desktop (5000 series) who has been consistently having intermittent power on and off problems. I will be able to use it one day, and then the following day, it just wont turn on! I already had it checked by numerous technicians, but they can't seem to find anything wrong with the computer because when they turn it on, the computer powers on. I bring it home and then, a few days after, it just refuses to turn on again!

I had every aspect of the computer checked and observed. Power source is ok. The AVR is new and works when i use it with other devices. RAM is working fine. I dont know what to do anymore! I know something is wrong with it but the technicians can't put their finger on it. I had one technician who told me that the motherboard is short-circuiting with the casing so he put foam/insulator all around! *Sigh, I dont know if that is even possible, not to mention logical...

I hope any of you guys and girls out there could help me out.. I will be extremely grateful for any suggestions that you could give. THank you very much.
Sincerely yours,

Hello tech guys out there!
I am having this issue with my Compaq Presario R4000. Whenever I have been using my laptop for more than 15-20 min, the ac adapter will not charge propertly. I will keep blinking on the power light as well as the start buttton light. But if I were to turn off the laptop and plug in the AC, it will charge normally again. Any idea what would be causing this issue?

I am thinking it could be motherboard issue that controls the charging but it is really wierd. Anyone had this issue before, please share with me how you resolve it? It might also be the DC port.....

Well, I'm guessing power supply here? When I hit the power button, no fan, nothing, just a slight "clicking" noise and the flashing yellow (some say orange) light. From what I've read it sounds like the power supply went belly up. How do I know: 1) which power supply to get to replace this one, and 2) is it worth it? I have been given an old(ish) Compaq Presario C700 Notebook PC by a friend and whilst it appears to connect to my Belkin wireless router it cannot connect to the internet. My wireless network is located by the notebook but there is a red X between the "unidentified network" and the internet symbol.

I have tried to connect before and after reformatting the notebook but to no avail. I have looked at a number of threads here and tried a few things suggested for other people with a similar issue but nothing works. I have restarted the router numerous times as well but still no luck.

The PC I am using to post this is connected via the same router and is working fine so what am I doing wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also not sure how to network the notebook and this PC as well.

Hi there,

Newbie to this site, but hope you guys/gals can help me out. I've had this laptop for about 4 years and ironically, the extended warranty ran out only 3 weeks ago.

3 problems:

This evening I turned on the laptop for about 15 mins and noticed the power light indicator was blinking on and off. Soon smoke started to come from the power/network port area and the system immediately shutdown. I immediately pulled the AC adapter out and allowed the system to cool. Upon disassembling the laptop, I could not find any burns on the board near the power/network port area. Is it safe then to turn on the laptop again? Anyway to isolate what caused the problem?

2. The AC Adapter has been problematic for awhile. It appears to be loose and will sometimes cause the laptop to auto shutdown due to loss of power. I often to jiggle this wire to allow it continue to provide power. How do I test if the problem is w/ the pin on the m/board or the external adapter?

3. The battery on the laptop has also not been working on its own for awhle. When ever I pull the battery out, it shows that a little bit of juice on the indicator, but when I remove the adapter and let the laptop run on the battery alone, it shuts down w/in 2-3 minutes. How can I test to see if the battery is still fully functional?

I really don't want to have to take the laptop into a service center so they can screw me over w/ diag costs and unnecessary parts - so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks!... Read more

Try re-seating the Ram. If that doesn't help remove the Cmos battery for a few minutes then put it back, it looks like a silver coin and should be visible near the ram.

I have a computer from 1998; I think it's a Pentium 3 (maybe 2; I don't remember). About a year ago, it started connecting to the monitor very sporadically. Eventually, it outright died. At the time, it seemed very likely that it had picked up a virus. We bought a new computer, but would like to drag some of the old stuff off of the Compaq, if I could get it up and working.

It beeps and clicks and whirls away happily...but the screen remains absolutely blank. It used to work if I switched monitors, but only temporarily. The keyboard does not seem to be receiving power, either. Hard to say with the mouse, since I'm getting nothing.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Data Recovery

Check to see if the old computer's hard drive is compatible with a hard drive connection on your new machine. There are two issues, the type of connector and the speed settings.

Your old computer's hard drive is undoubtedly designed to mate with an IDE connector. Most computer mother boards with IDE connectors have at least two IDE connectors. If your new computers has IDE connectors, you may need to free up one by disconnecting a CD or zip drive. Configure your old computer's hard drive as a "slave," connect the power cable, and then connect the IDE ribbon cable. When you turn on your machine, if the drive is operational and compatible, you should be able to read the contents of the files. I am not an expert, but I believe the older slower ATA/100 hard drives will work with mother boards designed for faster ATA/133 hard drives, but of course the read / write speeds will be at the slower rate.

After finding that you can examine the file directory of the old computer's hard drive, but before opening any of the files, it is a good idea to have a virus search program, such as Norton or MacAfree, check the files for computer viruses. Once you are certain that the files you want are virus free, copy them across.

If your new computer does not have an IDE connector on its motherboard, perhaps because it uses one of the newer harddrives with a serial connector, search for someone that does have a comput... Read more

I have an old Presario 5000 desktop which, while old and slow, is the only machine I own that has a burner in it (and the only desktop, so I can't pull it out and move it).

For a while, the computer would freeze up frequently. I could just reboot, though, and there would be no problem.

Then I could not even get it to boot up. It would power on and the fan would start and everything seemed normal except for there were no BIOS beeps - and nothing would even start. I thought this might be due to a bad power supply (praying it's not the CPU or motherboard), so I replaced it. The computer worked perfectly (better than I can even remember).... for about 2 hours. Then it froze again and now it won't boot up. I'm getting really frustrated at this thing, but I need a burner and can't afford an external one or a new computer. Is there anyway I can save this thing without taking out a second mortgage?

Thanks for your help!!!

A:Presario 5000 won't boot

Try replacing the BIOS's a looks like a little silver thing, about the size of a quarter usually. Take it to your local PC store and ask them for one. It might not be the problem, but it wont hurt. If the BIOS info is not being kept, it wont boot.

Before the problem started was anything added to or installed on the system?

Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.

Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get

the Advanced Options.

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

Hello all,

My problem is this: I have a Compaq V6000 laptop and I cant get it to charge without constantly checking and moving the cord. It will light up and show its charging, then will stop until I mess with the cord. It is getting worse and is starting to become quite a pain. any suggestions?

A:Compaq V6000 power connection

Hi Jeff, and welcome to TSG.

If moving around the plug that goes into the laptop makes the connection come and go, you may have a broken power socket on the motherboard or a broken solder connection from the socket to the motherboard. The only way to know for sure is to open up the laptop and examine the socket. You may want to get this fixed ASAP. Otherwise there is a possibility of the damage spreading to the motherboard itself.

If moving the wire around while holding the plug steady in the laptop makes the connection come and go, the wire may be broken internally or at its connection point at the plug. Unless you are handy with a soldering iron, a new AC adapter may be the lowest cost solution.

I have a problem with a Compaq ProLiant 5000, that i could desperately do with some help with.

It worked perfectly until i moved house and after a few months of being in a corner i turned it on for the first time to discover that it would not boot up at all.

It powers up, the fans come on, all the lights on all the (Hot Pluggable) disks light up momentarily, 2 lights on the keyboard light up for the briefest second. The big red Compaq logo appears on the screen and sometimes the memory check starts. But then the screen just goes blank, sometimes the memory check doesn't even start at all and the screen just blacks out after the Compaq logo.

The computer does not die altogether, the fans keep whirring and the green power light remains on, but that is it. I do not get any beeps, but a couple of times the middle green light on one of the disks came on and remained on, but nothing else happened, even if i left the machine for hours. No amount of rebooting or pulling disks in or out or pulling the cover on or off made any difference at all. It just does the same.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, just point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance

A:Compaq Proliant 5000 will not boot up or POST

Interesting how you say that a light comes on and remains on, usually this suggests that the hardware is not connected properly; have you checked to make sure all of the wires in your case are securely fastened and plugged into the right places?

Also, it would help us solve your problem if you gave us some system specs. How long did you have your computer before moving house? And finally, have you ever left your computer on and experienced a power surge or something similar? This could cause some problems for your PSU and usually the damage would stay there (in normal circumstances). So if you could post the above and other relevant info, it would be greatly appreciated .

I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.

So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart

My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.

A:Compaq Presario 600 ??

Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.

Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to and look up the info for your make/model.

If any here has an HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario PC or Notebook (current models), they will notice that the fan kicks in when needed. The fan doesn't really annoy me as much on my Compaq laptop, but on my HP desktop it is really annoying and loud. I think it forgot that it was only supposed to come on when needed because it is now on almost all the time. Can someone explain to me how this fan works in more detail and how I can possibly adjust when it comes on or at least the fan speed, SOMETHING!!! Thanx in advance.

A:HP/Compaq Pavilion/Presario Fan

If the fan kicks in more then it used to it might mean that the computer needs a cleaning. These fans are temperature controlled and only kick in when a sensor detects the temperature to be at a certain level. Sone fans need to be on at all times - like the one on the CPU - but it may be possible to control it speed with software or BIOS settings.

Speedfan comes to mind, do a google search for it. It will list the motherboard temps and allow fan speed adjustment if the board supports it. If you have a case fan you can control its speed, as for the CPU fan - thats best left on a full speed.

First, open up the case and see if it needs a cleaning. You can also replace stock fans with quieter ones if they are too loud or wearing out.

I am upgrading a Compaq Presario 5000 model #5WB220 with a very low 15 GB hard drive for a friend. It currently has Windows ME and there is no Compaq Restore CD.

I have increased the memory to 320 by adding an additional 256 MB RAM.

I am wanting to totally replace the 15GB hard drive with an 80 GB hard drive and load Windows XP Home.

The problem I am finding out is that Compaq has propriertory info on a partition within the existing drive. From what I understand without the Restore CD, I can't put the new drive in.

I'm wondering if there are any other alternatives to doing this.

Can I install XP on the existing drive and then transfer all the data (to include the compaq proprietory info) to the new drive in a slave position?

Recently took some hits on my Compaq Presario 7478 system. Got two or three nasties via the 'Net. After McAfee's virus scan and removal, began experiencing weird happenings, such as system closing down and restarting. Then just not starting. Tried a few remedies [probably inadvisedly], and finally the system seemed to hang on my restore at the same place repeatedly.
Ultimately the system could no longer establish my OS. Restore failed.
Bottom line: Could not invoke computer restore. Could do nothing with this computer.
Q... Being compaq is the BIOS set to a certain condition that would prevent my reformatting the hard drive and restablishing an OS? Is this an option I can override? If I were to piggy-back the existing hard drive onto an operating hard-drive and reformat would that solve this problem and permit me to then create or repair the hard drive subsequently to get my compaq back?
Sorry this is so wordy...

A:Compaq Presario dead

Have you tried disabling System Restore; then re-enable for a fresh start?

Failing that, format and install OS per instructions in your manual or the CD which came with your computer. If no CD, the OS should be installed in .cab files in Windows Explorer.

The BIOS should already be properly set

I origenally had plans to overclock it but I feel it would be best to leave it be and buy a new processer. what I wanted to know is would I have to buy a new motherboard inorder to upgrade it to 1gig? By the way, you would'nt happen to know why it says 366 and runs at 250. All your help is greatly appreciated.

Look in your manual. Compaq has the upgrade path documented very well in it. I really doubt your FSB is at 250MHz tho

Original 500GB HDD was showing signs of eminent failure.I successfully cloned the drive to a new 400GB HDD, using NORTON GHOST.(I know this drive is smaller than the original, but less than 30GB was being used on the original)Anyway, The new drive would not boot.Assuming that the problem may be OS license-related, I ordered the Compaq Recovery Discs Set.While waiting for the Recovery Disc Set to arrive, I purchased a Sandisk 120GB SSD.(Again, I know that the 120GB SSD is smaller than the original 500GB HDD that came with the computer, but I do not plan to even fill it 50%.)Anyway, The Recovery Disc Set arrived and I attemted to use it on the new Sandisk 120GB SSD.The process seemed to go fine, all 3 discs of the set seemed to copy, and then the computer restarts and a screen displaying files flying across the screen from one folder to another stays there forever.I waited 15 hours and came back and I still just see:Files flying across the screen, from one folder to another folder. The drive activity light is blinking, but obviously there is a problem. Some possible related facts/information:The SSD is detected in the BIOS.The SSD Checks good, by the BIOS Diagnostics "Smart" Tests.I cannot find anywhere in the BIOS to disable AHCI, it only shows SATA or IDE.Current Bios version is 5.5.5, and I have been unable to find a BIOS Update anywhere.Current Memory (RAM) is 4GB (2x2GB), which was an upgrade since the machine was originally purchased. Can someone p... Hi Guys,

I am trying to install a Cyberdrive x16x12x40 CD-RW into a Compaq Presario 5000 series PC. If no other device is attached to either the IDE or to the power supply, and if the CD-RW isn't attached to the IDE then power will get to the CD-RW. If the CD-RW is attached to the IDE and/or any other device is attached then no power goes to the CD-RW.

Can anyone shed any light on why this is and how I can fix it.

I have this old Compaq and I used to be able to burn CD's until the day I stuck in my little portable device one would use to store pictures and things..I forget what its called, but you can insert it into a USB port then add or remove pics or anything and remove it and put it back around your neck and go. Anyway after doing this one day I go to burn a Cd and my computer is telling me I have these new drives called E,F,G, & H, which it has now bundled into something called a USB mass storage device. it no longer recognizes that i have a working burner.. it does not even recognize that I have a drive D. All it is reading is those removable device drives that came along with my junk drive. The 'Safely Remove Hardware" option has been coming up and ive used it to disable these other drives..but its still not working..How can I fix this?

Right-Click on My Computer, select Manage. In the left pane there should be a listing for Disk Management - click that.

Now, in the right pane, scroll down and see if your CD is listed, but has no drive letter. If so, right click on the grey part and choose "assign letter". I would use Z: (no chance of a USB device trying to grab that letter).

After unsucessfully trying to get rid of some nasty Malware (Antivirus XP Pro 2009 to be precise) I'm currently trying to perform a factory reset on my Compaq Presario SR1909uk which had Windows XP.

I'm performing this from the recovery discs I created when I bought the PC.
However, I keep getting various error messages saying either

'Cannot copy file C:\1386\APPS\APPS15417\src\VIRUSCAN7.DAT or

I keep aborting when I get these messages and the progress perecetage remains. If I do this until I reach 100% do you think it will work?

Other than buying some new recovey discs from Compaq or taking it to be fixed, are there any alternatives please?

I was not sure just where this question should go so if this is not the right place please feel free to relocate it.

I have THIS desk-top:

Hewlett-Packard Compaq Presario CQ2723wPC
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
AMD EI-1200 Accelerated Processor
Memory = 4GB/G(something I can't make out) DDR
HardDrive = 500GB/
I am running a PPS PE9 photo effects program that is only working about 50%

I have found the minimum requirements for running this particular program:

Open GL 2.0 capable video card with 256MB dedicated RAM
Memory 8GB+

How do I find out what kind/size of video card, how much dedicated RAM, and available memory my unit has ?

If my unit is falling short in any of these requirements, is this something I can buy and is it within my abilities to make the necessary improvements ?

I am quite mechanically/electrically adept but I know little about the insides of a computer.

Thanks for reading.

A:Compaq Presario Particulars ???

The Compaq Presario CQ2723w Desktop PC(H2L89AA) comes with Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit and comes with this hardware:
Pegatron APXD1-DM(Redwood A) motherboard
AMD E1-1200 APU 1.40 GHz dual core processor which has an average benchmark score of 682
4 GB of DDR3-1333 RAM
Intel Radeon HD 7310 graphics which has an average benchmark score of 171
Realtek ALC662 high definition audio
Atheros AR8152 10/100 Mbps ethernet
500 GB SATA hard drive
Super-multi DVD burner disc drive
65 watt power supply

If you wanted a desktop that's speedy and has plenty of hardware upgrade options, you couldn't have picked one much worse than this one.
Its motherboard has no expansion slot for adding a graphics card, so you're stick with its wimpy integrated graphics which uses up to 1961 MB of shared memory.
Its slow wimpy processor is soldered to the motherboard and not upgradeable to a faster one.
It has only 4 GB of RAM, but it supports 8 GB, so you do have the option of adding more.
