I bought my Satellite Z930 in August and installed 2GB extra RAM in it. Worked fine, the Ultrabook detected it and had total 6GB of RAM.
Yesterday I stopped ignoring these Toshiba Tempro messages and installed the suggested BIOS Update to Bios 2.20 (don't know which version it was before). Now I have several problems:

*First one*, my Ultrabook doesn't start anymore with the extra RAM. I press the power button, then the power LED starts blinking: 2 times yellow, 1 time orange in loop. The screen stays black and the CPU fan raises to maximum level..Only when I remove the extra RAM, then it starts.

*Second problem*, without my extra RAM it starts, but sometimes with the CPU fan at maximum level. So i have to restart that it stops.

*Third problem*, Windows only detects 2GB of RAM. I have now no extra RAM istalled, so it should detect 4GB of RAM, like when I bought it. Now there are only 2GB...

So is this what happens when I install suggested updates? -.-
So what can I do now? At least I want my preinstalled 4GB of RAm back. Is there any BIOS downgrade, or something similar to revert the changes?

A:Satellite Z930 - after BIOS Update, Extra RAM doesn't work anymore

OK, solved the problem. I found a BIOS downgrade to 2.1 at this page:
Now I have my 6GB back :)

im need to know the maximum ram amount for the Toshiba Satellite Z930-12Z. The toshiba website tells me it is selled with 2 x 2048 and you can expand up to 6 gb ram with replaycing one dim with 4 gb. but on the kongston website there is a 8gb dim available, so the max would 10gb (2gb +8GB) is the 8 gb kingston module ( KTT-S3C/8G) 85359

Hello everyone,

As funny as my question may sound ... it's actually serious!
I have big concerns over battery life (not so much of the one of a single recharge, but the one affecting the "life" of the notebook itself!) because there doesn`t even seem to be a way to COMPLETELY turn this notebook off! This feels like a joke for a notebook advertising with an "eco" label supposed to help reduce wasting natural resources (which was an important part for my purchase decision).

When I hibernate the notebook or turn it off by long-pressing the "Power" button, the LED's indicating battery mode etc. are still on, by that the battery is slightly drained even when the notebook is turned off. While the LED's will of course certainly not use a lot of power, it means that the next time I'm plugging in my computer, +a new recharging cycle is initiated+ which could have been avoided without that. With a battery usually surviving 1000 recharging cycles, this will force me to buy a new battery (by the way: what a shame and how "yesterday" that the battery is built-in and not replaceable by the buyer!) within less than 2 years if I plug off a few times every day.

Alltogether this sounds very much like "planned obsolescence" and I am annoyed by the mere thought supporting something like that. And basically I am very happy with the Z930, so the more I am frustrated by this completely pointless battery drain. Any idea how to turn off the... Read more

Hello all,

I'am new here and read some blogs also about the Satelite Z930-12Z but I have two questions about the Satellite Z930-12Z:

1. What is the maximum RAM for Satellite Z930-12Z? Are there two slots in it or one slot?
I read this blog but I don't understand if there are two slots or one slot...
2. Could I change the SSD? Is there a maximum GB for SSD for my Ultrabook? Does it matter which SSD I install?

I had these to SSDs:
2.1. Kingston SMS200S3/480G SSD 480GB (6,4 cm (2,5" mSATA)
2.2. Samsung MZ-M5E500BW SSD 500GB (mSATA)

Does it matter which SSD I install??

Thank you in advance!!!

Rebecca Bugday

A:Satellite Z930-12Z - Add RAM and replace SSD

two DIMM slots with 16GB support apparently. You won't need 16GB. Grab a set of 2x4GB Dual channel RAM, i'll leave a link to some good stuff that i use for my 16GB laptop
Also, yes, of course you can change the SSD, you'll need to get some kind of USB 3.0 to mSATA interface device first and clone the existing disk across, because laptops don't take kindly to fresh windows installs.

Hi everyone,

because my Z830 is more of an A360 the last days than a quiet ultrabook I wanted to broach the annoying noisy fan subjekt again....

Iluminatus23 mentioned in [another thread|] that he now uses the new Z930 fan in his Z830 with good results (silence!).
On the internet I wasn't able to find a seller for this fan in Germany. Does anyone of you guys know where I can get this fabulous new fan? Might it even be replaced (for free?) by Toshiba? (warranty & goodwill)

Maybe Iluminatus23 could give us a little more information about the replacement (where he got his fan from / if the replacement was easy / if he is still happy or maybe problems occured later)?

Thanks for your time and hope to get some answers :)

Here is my problem (sorry for my english) :

I have a Toshiba Satellite Z930 15X.

For several weeks, it is very very slow. Whether eco or normal mode, it is even slower than eco mode. *Even without any program running*. When I look at the task manager, everything is ok and fluid.

Is that a hardware problem ?
I also noticed that the fan runs much more often than the first few months of use, even with just a word document open.

The only solution I've found is to restart the computer.
After each reboot it is fast as normal, but only for a short time. But at one time or another, the extreme slowness often returns after a suspend.

*I also noticed that it often occurs after a suspend or after connecting / disconnecting the laptop from the AC outlet.*

(I specify that I have just a few programs installed and have no trace of viruses and other malicious software (I'm very careful about that).)

Did you have this problem, where does it come from, what can i do ?

Thank you !

A:Extreme slowness on my Satellite Z930-15X

On this virtual way it is not easy to say what exact reason is. To be honest I don't think there is some hardware problem. Fact is that many background processes may slow down notebook?s performance. Maybe some background downloads and update installation can be reason that your notebook react pretty slow.

Check please start-up and disable all useless applications. If you don't use some of them they must not start with Windows and run in the background. Check also Windows update option. Disable automatic update.

Do it please as first steps and check if the notebook runs a bit faster.
Please post some feedback.

Hi All

on my Satellite Z930 with keyboard layout set to german (Switzerland), the alt gr key does not allow to access the additional characters (such as @, which would be accessed by alt gr + 2), but instead turns all keys into hot keys (e.g. typing n would open a new web browser window).

Does anyone know about this behavior and how to turn this behavior off? (it's rather annoying to change the layout always to en-us just to type one char ...)

Many thanks!

A:Satellite Z930 - ALT GR key changes keyboard to hot keys

Similar is with English UK and US where symbols ? and @ are n different positions.

You must simply test which key combination works properly. I have EN UK keyboard and when I switch it to German (Switcerland) symbol @ I can get if I use ALT GR+2 key combination.

Does it works on your Satellite too?

So I bought a 2nd hand Z930 (with no back-up drivers/software) and when setting my password I checked the box to replicate the password for the HDD.

When it re-booted I did see an error message flash up but didn't read it in time.
It re-booted and asked for the password - typed it in - confirmed; HDD password - not confirmed!
So now I can't get into the laptop. Can this be fixed?

I'm thinking I should buy a 256gb SSD to replace it and then find all the drivers and reformat the laptop - will that work?

I'm struggling to find an authorised dealer in the UK to ask them to remove the password from the BIOS - thinking the new SSD would be a cheaper solution anyhow?

Any help would be much appreciated!!!! I'm threadders - only had it 5 flippin minutes!!!!

A:Satellite Z930-N13 - SDD HDD Password Problem

HDD password cannot be deleted if you don?t know the password or if the password is wrong.
I have no idea what went wrong during the password set but fact is that BIOS password and HDD password are not the same.
Both can be set within the BIOS separately.

In case the HDD password cannot be deleted, the HDD would be useless?

> I'm thinking I should buy a 256gb SSD to replace it and then find all the drivers and reformat the laptop - will that work?
Yes, the HDD password does not affect new HDDs or SSD drives? but only the HDD which was connected to the notebook while the password has been set.

I've a problem with my Z930-164 : The battery loose around 8% every 12 hours while it is off.

I've the latest bios (6.80) and the latests drivers. I'm with windows 7 64 bits.

By trying many things, I've founded that it is the option : "Sleep and Charge" in the bios. By default it is on Auto mode (1.5 A), there is a 2.0A mode too. If I turn it off, the battery only loose 1% every 12 hours while it is off.

In default mode, why it does not power the USB while sleeping ONLY if there is a device ? Not to drain the battery !

It is a huge problem no ?

A:Satellite Z930 : Battery is drained while off

The enabled Sleep & Charge function affects the battery working time.
Sleep & Charge allows to charge external connected devices (like smartphone) even if the notebook is in sleep mode.

Furthermore enabled ?Wakeup? options (Wake up on LAN, etc..) which are available in BIOS would lead to battery discharging.
Therefore disable these options if you don?t want to discharge the battery.

No, as far as I know you can use either the VGA or the HDMI output.

If you want to use two external monitors, I recommend using an external Dynadock device

Does anyone know a link / an instruction on:

(1) where can I get a new keyboard for Z930?
(2) can I replace it myself? If yes, how?

A:Keyboard replacement on Satellite Z930

I don?t know what the problem is with your keyboard but I presume that this new notebook model has valid warranty so I strongly recommend you to contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. If keyboard is defective they should exchange it for free.

The whole situation with hardware parts is pretty complicated. I don?t know where do you live and I cannot search whole web to find right link for you and you can do this alone. Google a bit around and check if you can find some online store in your country where you can order it.

Theoretically you can do this but I don?t think you should do this alone. Notebook disassembling can be pretty complicated and without maintenance manuals very risky. Small mistake and you can damage something, especially small plastic parts and plastic holders.

Contact nearest Toshiba service, talk with them and ask for some help or good advice.

I bought my laptop about three years ago in Germany. The battery has died (laptop switches immediately off if it is not plugged) and I am looking to replace the battery. I am based in Morocco for professional reasons and unfortunately there is no real Toshiba service here. I have searched online for replacement batteries but can't find any Satellite batteries. Someone wrote on a forum that all Portege Z930 batteries were compatible with Satellite Z930 but the computer expert i am working with thinks i should contact Toshiba first. I have looked for a telephone number but couldn't find any and that virtual Yoko couldn't really get my question either.

Does anyone know if a Porteg? Z930 battery would fit in my Satellite?

Ordering the battery from a Moroccan supplier would be very expensive as the VAT on computer appliances is really high. I am looking to order it in Germany and having a friend bring it to me at the end of the month.

Generally speaking no, it is not a problem. Only problem can be installation of some drivers, tools and utilities but I believe you will be able to install it.

A bit of background: I recently purchased a Win7 build of a Z930 in Auckland from the PB Tech storefront. I have upgraded to a clean build of Win8 64-bit. My Win8 seems to running ok but I noticed something strange in the Toshiba PC Health Monitor -- apparently the Toshiba HDD/SSD Alert isn't installed, so I don't get its iconic display in the Health Monitor (but the Health Monitor thinks my SSD is in "Good" shape -- perhaps it's reading the SMART interface of my SSD, or perhaps it's just saying "Good" because the Health Monitor is apparently able to run???)

I can easily find various versions of the Toshiba HDD/SSD Alert Utility in dodgy-download websites, but I would really prefer to get my drivers from Toshiba support. Which leads to my question:

Your Australian notebook model Satellite Z930 *PT23LA* series is the same series like the European model Satellite Z930 *PT23LE* series.

Therefore the drivers, tools and utilities released for Satellite Z930 *PT23LE* series should be compatible with the Satellite Z930 *PT23LA* series.

I our new Satellite Z930 was only 219Gb of 256 Gb SSD free.
The reason is, that there are 4 more partitions.

First two with about 200 and 400 MB could be usefull for Drivers and so, but the last two are 10Gb and 8 Gb. Only third Partition is "normal" and is iniliazed (as C:).

The question - can I delete one of four "useless" partitions?

A:Satellite Z930 - 4 hidden partitions on SSD can I delete them?

The partitions are not ?useless?. There are always reasons for such partitions.

First of all one partition is designed for Toshiba HDD recovery (it must be one of the bigger partitions 10/8GB). This is needed in order to recover the notebook to factory settings without the usage of recovery disk. However, the recovery disk should be created always.

It could be possible that the recovery folder/partitions would be muddled up and in such case the HDD recovery would not be possible. I?m not quite sure about the other partition but I would keep it on the SSD drive too.

The other smaller partitions are created automatically by Windows system. One contains repair files which are used for system repair. As I?m not mistaken the other one is essential partition for faster reboot.
Since Windows 8 does not completely shut down by default but goes in hybrid shutdown/mode.

Just got the new Satellite Z930 with the 128Gb SSD partitions as follows

450mb recovery partition
260mb EFI system partition*
9.66Gb recovery partition
8Gb Primary partition*
100.76Gb Boot, pagefile, crashdump, primary partition*

Only those marked with * are allowed to be deleted using the windows disk management tool.

I'm assuming the 8Gb partition is the recovery media for a factory restore. I'm planning on creating a USB recovery media of course (9Gbrequired according to the recovery media creator - 16Gb USB recommended). Then delete this partition and extend the main partition.

The questions:

1. Anyone know what the 9.66Gb partition is and why it can't be deleted? Possibly hibernation related, but why 9.66 when there is only 6Gb RAM installed (that would make the hibernation partition 4Gb)

2. What is the EFI partition for?

3. It is curious that if you take away 4Gb (what the hibernation file for 6Gb RAM should be) from the 9.66 the remaining 5.66 and the 8Gb partition are basically the same size as the 13.5Gb primary partition reported here for the portege z930. Why would Toshiba squirrel away part of the recovery media along with the hibernation space?? Any way to recover the full 13.5Gb asmentioned in the portege z930 post?

Thanks in advance

A:Satellite Z930 - question about Win8 SSD partitions

>1. Anyone know what the 9.66Gb partition is and why it can't be deleted? Possibly hibernation related, but why 9.66 when there is only 6Gb RAM installed (that would make the hibernation partition 4Gb)

I assume the 9.66GB partition called recovery partition is created for HDD recovery.
You can recover the notebook using HDD recovery and this does not require the recovery disk or recovery USB memory stick.
But I would not recommend deleting this partition because you would lose the possibility to recover the unit by HDD recovery?

>2. What is the EFI partition for?
EFi partition contains the boot loader program for all operating systems installed (in other partitions) on the HDD. So don?t touch it.

I am new to this so please don't shoot me down if this is a dumb question. I have just bought a new Z930 ultrabook. The advertised storage space was 125GB (although the C drive is only showing 100GB available). I have only installed MS Office Standard 2007, Norton anti virus, and printer drivers.

However, I now only have 65GB of disk space left and I don't think these applications take up 35GB. I have removed shadow copies of everything.
Can anyone give me some advice please?

Unfortunately we cannot see exact info of the HDD but maybe you saw something wrong.
Check please ?Disk management? in ?Computer management? options and there you can see all basic info about HDD and each HDD partition.

I can imagine that this 35GB is total amount on data saved on certain partition that includes OS and all preinstalled stuff.

It is not so simply as you think. If BIOS password must be reset it must be done by authorized service and you must also prove that your notebook belongs to you.
As far as I know there are different techniques for BIOS password removal. I don?t know which one will be used for your notebook but fact is that they will not tell you this so simply at phone or mail.
You must bring your notebook to the service.

Call nearest service and ask for help. They will explain you how it works.

Hi guys,

Just wondering if there is a service manual that would show me, or if anyone knows from experience, how to open a Satellite Z930 and upgrade the SSD. I know this will void my warranty but I don't care; Toshiba MobileCare won't have anything to do with it and I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for something I could do myself if I just knew how to remove the back cover!

I've removed all the bottom screws but the cover still won't come seems to be stuck at the back-left corner. I'm guessing there's another screw under the keyboard or something...any help would be very much appreciated! :)

A:Re: Instructions for opening a Satellite Z930 and upgrading the SSD

There are no 'secret' screws as far as I know.

But the question is, do you know the Z930 uses a small mSATA SSD which currently max out at 256GB?
You cannot install a standard 2.5" SSD.

Dear all,

Sattelite Z series laptops cannot install OS (win 8.1) from our SCCM 2012 R2 environment.

Either no installation is starting, or pxe boot aborted error is showed.
The environment is used to successfully install OS (win 8.1) on different other vendor computers (dell) and virtual machines (hyper-v and vmware).

I've tried both UEFI and CMS boot options and tried to switch off the secure boot. Please advice.

Also, i've read about the "SCCM installation package for Toshiba". Will it help in my situation or is it just driver packages for SCCM?

Best Regards, Evgeny.

A:Satellite Z930-14F - cannot install Win 8.1 from SCCM 2012 R2 environment

I guess you are speaking about this Toshiba package:

I don?t have much experience using such SCCM drive package but it definitely compatible with the Toshiba business notebooks. The Satellite / Portege Z930 belong to the business range and I think the package should be compatible.
This package seems to be for all IT administrators who manage devices on the corporate network with SCCM 2012 R2. Toshiba offers with the new Toshiba SCCM package a solution to integrate other notebook into an existing IT infrastructure quickly and smoothly and all Toshiba Driver and application packages and a demonstration task sequence are integrated.

However, it seems that you could get more details about this package directly from Toshiba [email protected]

By the way: The Win 8.1 installation requires the UEFI mode (in case the UEFI BIOS is available). But booting from another, external source requires the disabled secure boot option.
So maybe you should use the UEFI mode but should disable the secure boot option in order to boot from LAN.

Recently there has been an issue with my Z930 and I'm not sure if it's a damaged screen or if it's something to do with the software. I'm also using Windows 8 as the operating system.

Earlier today the device was running as normal, but it later began flickering with a mess of pixels everywhere like a glitch, with black lines rising from the bottom of the screen.

A few seconds after that cleared up, the entire screen turned black.
It is still lit up, but there's only a blank, black screen - I can't even see the cursor.

Every now and then the screen flickers like it's struggling to keep working. I hooked it up to another screen and its typical display showed on the other device, so I'm taking a guess that it's a damaged screen.

Before I start preparing to get a new screen or even a new device, is it possible that it might be something else other than a broken screen?

Because it's odd seeing that I take great care about the screen because it is fragile to begin with, I haven't knocked it or had any fluids on the screen, so having it suddenly break like that is pretty odd.

A:Satellite Z930 doesn't work - black screen

The described symptoms like flickering with a mess of pixels sounds like a graphic card problem.
Also the fact that the same symptoms are visible on the 2nd external screen, would confirm my assumption that the GPU would be affected.

In case the internal screen would be faulty, the external screen should work properly but this isn?t the case.

From my point of few the motherboard together with the GPU has to be replaced in order to fox the issue but of course the whole notebook should be tested by an service engineer before starting to replace any parts.

I have a Satellite Z930 which I would like to open in order to replace the original SSD with one having a higher capacity.

The thread
was very helpful.
But my PC has a SIM card slot on the right side (side opposite to the microphone and the headphone)

Even after taking off all the 14 screws (including the torx one right in the center), the back cover can not be lifted up on the side of the SIM card slot. Something is holding it back.

Has anyone in the community already succeeded in removing the back cover for this confiuration ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Instructions for opening a Satellite Z930 with a slot for SIM card

Did you manage to remove the cover?

There is no other method to remove the cover? if your notebook is equipped with SIM card, remove firstly the SD card (bridge media dummy card), then SIM card (you will need to insert a slender object into the hole of the sim tray) and then the 14 screws from the cover at the bottom of the unit.

That?s all?

I've bought my Toshiba Satellite Z930 more than a year ago. I quickly realise than I didn't had much network possibilities than before with older windows such as the possibility to create a wifi network. Never more...

And recently I had an update on my internet Box allowing me to use the "Play To" system of windows. GREAT ! I tried to use it but it didn't work. I first thought that it was my box that was malfunctioning but with another PC it works well !!

So I'm starting to wonder if their is a network issue on my computer ? Or maybe, is the windows installed version is a light one ?

Does anyone knows anything about it ?

A:Windows 8.1 "PlayTo" protocol issues with Satellite Z930-12Q

Your posting is confusing.

You are talking about ?light? Windows 8 system. I don?t know what you mean by ?light? but the notebook was preinstalled with common Windows 8 64bit and this fully functional system.

You are talking about networking problems? I?m wondering if you really have some network problems or you have no experience using Win 8.

If Win 8 is a little bit confusing, I would recommend checking the Microsoft Windows FAQ/HowTo pages about Win 8 and new Win 8.1

Yes, the Win 8.1 has been already released by MS and I would recommend you to update the Win 8 to Win 8.1 since it was improved by MS.
The upgrade can be done for free.

My Satellite laptop was working fine until I (presumably) closed the lid during the boot process.

Since then the screen is blank/black, even though I can change with the power button between "operation" including HD activity, WLAN and alternatively (long press) "hibernate" with a on/off fading operation symbol.

I tried all combinations of keys, long-press-power-button, FN-F8, FN-F5, etc. There is no output signal at the external VGA connector. I achieved no change at all.

All I would need is something like a *hardware-reset*.
There is no easy way to remove the battery as suggested in the internet.

Do you have any suggestions or tricks like "press xy and uv.." or alike to produce a real hardware-reset to make the device start from the beginning ?

I cannot believe that a sophisticated product like the Satellite Z930 has no provisions to reboot in case of a software failure. In a few cases things like that happen in real life.

A:Satellite Z930-119 hangs in hibernate with black screen - Reset?

As far as I know you would need to remove the bottom cover just to get access to the battery.

Here is an video on Youtube:
[Toshiba How-To: Z930 and Z935 Disassembly Instructions|]

But I would recommend trying something different.
Did you connect the external monitor to the notebook just to check if something would be visible on the 2nd screen?
Do that.

In case nothing would be visible on 2nd monitor you could try to remove the battery and to press and hold the power button 30sec long.
Not quite sure if it would be helpful but in some cases this procedure might help to wakeup the unit again.

Owner of a newly acquired Satellite Z930-15X, I have some questions/problems :

1) Suspend to RAM and hibernation work well when there is no external USB hard disk plugged in. If there is one plugged in, the laptop immediately returns back from suspend state. Is there a solution for this?

2) Is there a way to selectively deactivate Bluetooth? Currently only activate/deactivate Plane mode is offered (with Fn-F8 or from Windows 8 charm bar). This activates/deactivates both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth I believe.

3) The laptop is wobbly on reception. I have to put some thin paper at one bottom corner (the bottom top left) in order that it can be stabilized. Apparently the problem is also mentioned in another thread. Is there a suggestion to fhix this problem?

Thank you.

A:Satellite Z930 - Suspend problem with USB hard disk plugged in

1/ Which HDD is connected to your notebook? When I use 2,5? external HDD with my Satellite U940 I don?t have such problem.

2/ I?ve tested it on my machine and have noticed the same. When WLAN is off BT software is off too. I didn?t find a way how to separately have control over WLAN device and BT.

3/ I think this problem must be clarified with Toshiba service. They should check it and maybe exchange rubbers at the bottom.

Hope someone can help me please.

I have a friends Toshiba Z930 Ultra book.

When you boot the laptop it does not boot but comes up with the meesage PXE-E61 : Media Test Failure.

This is a Windows 8 Laptop 3rd Gen i7.

I can boot from HIREN's and the Hard Drive is found and is selectable and all files appear to be intact.

I have gone into the BIOS and discovered that Boot mode is set at CSM Mode.
However Windows 8 requires the boot mode to be UEFI.

I can not find how to change the Boot Mode from CSM to UEFI.
The option is greyed out and can not be selected.

A:Satellite Z930 - Boot mode set to CSM Boot and Greyed Out

Try load setup defaults. I'm not aware if Z930 has UEFI Support but I guess. Mabye there is some kind of superuserpassword you haven't entered to gain full access to bios functions.

The failure is about LAN/PXE Boot, nothing to worry about.

Win8 doesn't essentially requiere UEFI. it also works with CSM, but may need other bootloader and BCD container to run current installation.

I have an R830-1GZ Bios version 3.70 EC Version 1.50
And also a R630- 138 BIOS version 2.20 EC Version 1.60 (this is the most up to date version for this discontinued model.)

The former will recognise my WD storage for what it is - ie an external HDD. And the boot priority in the bios shows it below the internal HDD - which is what you would expect for correct operation.

The latter (R630) will always try to boot from the WD storage. It does not show the WD HDD in the Bios Boot priority list.

I can continue to unplug and replug the usb cable into the R630 - but it is a nuisance. I'm sure the problem is down to the BIOS not being new enough. What would be the likely result of flashing the 3.70 version - designed for the R830, onto the R630?

I'm expecting to be told it will make the R630 inoperable. But these laptops are very similar, so I'm hoping someone might have a more hopeful response.

Thanks for your help

A:Flashing the Satellite R830 BIOS onto the Satellite R630

First of all:
you can download only the Toshiba win based BIOS from Toshiba EU driver page.
This means that you can update the BIOS only while running the windows system.

it would not be possible to update the R830 BIOS onto the R630 since there is a protection which would break up the flash process because of compatibility issue.

You could damage the notebook if you would still try to update the wrong BIOS (maybe using the traditional BIOS version, USB version, etc?)
So this is really bad, bad idea doing this?

Hi. I have a system with 2 identical drive. I have windows on one drive C: and backing up on second one D:

Previously they were configured raid 1, but now I am just using C: as non-raid and accelarated using SSD and Intel Smart Response Technology where 64GB out of was used as cached volume. Please note SSD total size is 256GB. So there is left over space of 159GB showed up as separate volume in Disk Management.

So I quick formatted D: drive to use as backup drive. After backup is complete, it shows backup size as 642.68 GB on D drive. My whole C: uses only 405GB. It is taking up so much more space than it should and I don't know why. Both C and D has 4096 as allocation unit size. I think backup might be including SSD size on the system image. Please note there is no backup history that might take up space. This is first time backup on this disk.

SSD is for caching only. It should not be included in the system image backup. Also I am afraid it will cause problem when I have to use this system image to restore and somehow restore application might not know what to do with this additional cache data in system image.

I have included some screenshots.

If Windows Backup won't work with SSD Caching setup like i have, what should I use to backup system image?

A:Backup size is much bigger than original drive

I would create an image, not a backup.

Where is this other identical drive you speak of ? I don`t see it

Could you post a better, full shot of Disk Management.

Have you considered putting windows on the 256 SSD ? That would be the best thing you could do, no need for raid, or a cache.

Hi folks,

I followed some advice to create redundant original backups of my new computer to both the internal D:\ drive and to the new USB drive that I have dedicated to backing up this computer over time.

The main system files are on the C:\ drive, which is an SSD. To save room on the SSD, I want to put some programs on the D:\ drive, and have created the program files folders for this.

A couple of days later I had installed some programs and wanted to create a restore point that includes the D:\ drive. Windows tells me that I can't do this because the D:\ drive contains the backed up system files.

Question: Can I\do you advise, creating a partition on what is now the D:\ drive and moving the backup files to it, so that I can create Restore points for the D:\ drive? Or, should I delete the initial system backup that is on the D:\ drive and rely on the copy that is on the new USB drive?

Thank you!

A:Create partition and move original backup to it

I'm guessing you have used Windows Backup to do all of this. Correct?

I don't use it, but know that it can be fussy about where backup files are located--when it comes time to restore after a disaster, that can be a problem if you've moved stuff around.

How about just making a new backup on this new partition, rather than moving an existing backup to it? I assume you intend to renew your backups from time to time anyway.

I assume these "restore points" are another issue, separate from your "backups".

Does any one out there know where I can done load the original BIOS for a Sony VAIO VGN-AW220J Laptop. I attempted to get it from Sony but there 'Tech Support" is worthless. The issue I am trying to solve is that the Fingerprint Reader stop working after I ran the BIOS updater from Sony. There is also a USB device that is not working properly, which I am asuming is the internally install Fingerprint Reader that I am try to get working again.

A:Original BIOS for Sony VAIO VGN-AW220J

OK you may or may not be able to downgrade the bios. Some mb will refuse to install a bios older than what you currently have installed. You will need to check if you can even install the older bios. I highly doubt any windows based updater will allow you to downgrade the bios. It may be possible with a floppy boot disk; again you need to check.

Next have you tried to reinstall the drivers for the reader?

This is one of the many many reasons we advise against updating a bios unless you are sure it has a fix you need.

HELP.   I had to reset the bios on my HP Envy H8-1534 desktop but I don't have the original display card....It was stolen (grrr.)   What can I do?   It won't work with my Nvicia unless I can get into bios and enable legacy support.

A:H8-1534 Had to reset BIOS but don't have original video card

There is no onboard video so you have no choice other than to purchase and install a PCIe-x16  gen. 1 or gen. 2 video card. I suggest purchasing an ATI Radeon video card that does not have power requirements exceeding 450 Watts. CHeck the manufacturer's website before purchasing a video card to ensure that.  Check the power supply connectors to see if there is a PCIe six or eight-pin power connector. You may have to purchase an adapter if the replacement video card requires a PCIe power connector.

I've recently been working on a friend's old S6200CL and flashed its BIOS with version 3.10. After that, it appears that I can enter the BIOS screen using either F1 or F11 but depending on which one I press, some of the menu options aren't the same. I believe I may not have flashed it properly. Getting to the point, I'm wondering if anyone knows how to get a copy of the original BIOS which should be version 3.06.

I'm looking for the original (3.06) BIOS file for the S6200CL using the Kamet2 motherboard, NOT the Kelut motherboard.

A:How to remove BIOS password bios on Satellite Pro M30

I'm afraid to tell you, but for this, you have to contact local ASP.
Because it is not that easy or possible the way you would do this on deskopt PCs.

This is why you have to take your machine to ASP. The guys there can remove the password.

I have a CD drive in an external enclosure. I have plugged it into a working computer to make sure it works.

However, when plugged into the TravelMate, it does not boot from it. In the BIOS I have set boot priority to "Removable Device" then "CD drive" then "hard disk".

The reason I need the external drive in the first place is that the travelmate's cd drive is broken.

Windows cannot boot. There is a blue screen immediately upon startup. Only thing I can do is get into the BIOS.

I'm trying to reinstall Windows.

I fear that the BIOS may not support USB device booting, and paradoxically I have no way of updating the BIOS without booting from something other than the hard drive.

Okay, here's my issue. Like a dummy, I renamed my workgroup without exporting to a backup file for my outlook 2003 working files. Now that I am in a new environment, I cannot seem to import my old email and contact information to my new profile under the new workgroup. I tried to import, but no option; I tried to copy the old files to my new directory, but no luck. I am hoping someone out there knows a bit about outlook 2003.

Please forgive my basic ignorance on this type of matter, but.........

I have been looking on Ebay at used/refurbished computers for upgrading from my current and older P4 chip computer. One that I'm looking at says that it has a (legal and genuine version) of Windows XP Pro SP3 o/s installed on the custom built computer, but there's no disk.

If I were to purchase a computer like this, and make a back up copy of that installed o/s on my own disk, will there be any difference than if I had received the original installation disk or manufacturer's restore disk?.....or would the installed (and backup) o/s be considered an "unlicensed" copy?

A:Will a backup copy (to disk) of an installed XP the same as original install disk?

No, a copy would not be the same as the installation disk. But even better than an installation disk is a "disk image". It saves everything, your programs, your operating system, and all your files, for when the drive fails.

You are very wise to be considering how to recover. A disk image is much better than a "recovery partition" on the drive which is useless when the drive fails.

Buy an external drive for backup (though CD's and DVD's can be used, you can make backups far more easily, and thus frequently, with an external drive, or even a second internal drive). DVD's are fine if all you want is a single backup of the original system, but an imager can take snapshots along the way so less is lost.

I would check the eBay site for the report on the person or business selling the computer or equipment to see how reliable they are, anyways if you purchase a computer with a legal version of windows on it that has been refurbished I do not see why you should not get a windows install disk (Original) with it, if the installation is legal why not give the disk with it? I would be very leary.

I would check other ways of getting what you want and here is a good place to start:

My P300 went to my local repair shop for a network adapter issue. I believed it was simply a software or driver issue so I was not worried that my machine was still under warranty. Following an investigation, they stated they could not resolve the issue so would reformat and reinstall the OS, which they thought should sort out the problem.

To my horror, I found that they had broken the warranty seals and opened up the machine. They claimed the only way to back up the P300 prior to reformat, is to remove the HDD!
Is this true?
(It turns out that a broken chip is to blame, but because they've breached the warranty, Toshiba won't touch it!)

Can anyone advise about this issue of removing the HD to back it up please?

A:Satellite Pro P300 - Removing HDD to perform a backup?

Normally it?s not necassary to restore factory settings with removing the HDD but don?t worry about this. The notebook can always be opened from an authorized service provider without loosing the warranty.

I also don?t know why they did it, maybe they have checked hardware. This would be possible because they have professional diagnostic tools.

But interesting to know would be if your problem is now solved or not?!

Hello, friend of mine has this laptop which was was giving a "hard drive" error message so he purchased a new HDD and I am trying to load from the 5 OS backup discs which he was given when he purchased the laptop so I inserted Disc 1, it copied the files then is asked to insert the other discs until I came to disc 5 after which is was still asking for another disc but there aren't any other discs left so I shut down the pc and now attempting to reload win7 from a retail disk, I chose to boot from the optical drive both in the BIOS and also fromthe boot manager but no matter what I try, the "Toshiba Recovery Wizard" window keeps appearing staying on the screen so the Retail disc cannot load, help please?

Tried to find any information about this BIOS update. I have updated to version 2.50 but cant see any changes. Only when update finished cooling fans started working very fast for a sec and then it just rebooted. Now coolers working as was before, no changes. So whats the purpose of this update?

Anybody knows what this update fixes?

A:Satellite X200-252 - Changes in new BIOS 2.50

Hi ultimos,

Not every BIOS update offers more options in BIOS. Above all such updates fixes different problems with your notebook and doesn?t add new functions (only sometimes). So this update should only be done if you can notice problems with your notebook, otherwise it?s not necessary.

After this BIOS update on my notebook the fan worked also very fast but only few seconds. I think this is normal due restart procedure.

Last but not least such BIOS changelogs can only be founded on the Toshiba website - If they available (for public).

Unfortunately there is WIN BIOS update only. That means this BIOS update can be executed in running WXP only.

Anyway, I have uploaded 1.40 version on

According to the user's manual, I should press F2 and then the power button to get into the BIOS. This doesn't work. I have tried a couple of other typical combinations (ESC, DEL, all Fx keys,...), but no success either. I'm not able to boot Windows at the moment, so I really have to get into the BIOS directly. What should I do?

Hi there,

trying to do my first laptop BIOS upgrade on my M10 running bios 1.40. dated 2003.
I have downloaded version 1.50 windows based update and when extract the zip file and it starts to run I get "Toshiba common modules is not installed".

So back to the driver downloads and download Common Modules cmod-en20071113104042 and install. Ran the BIOS update again and I get the same Common Modules not installed.
Can anybody shed any light on my problems?

The machine is running a clean install of XP professional Service pack 3 and has BIOS version 1.40 and 512MB RAM.
I want to upgrade the RAM and have read on Toshiba that with bios update the M10 supports 2GB of RAM.
At the minute when I go to and scan the system I am told max support is 1 gig.

Any Answers or help would be gratefully received.

A:Satellite M10 and BIOS Upgrade

At first I must say that BIOS update will not change anything with RAM support. It depends on hardware platform and not on BIOS update. So it will not help at all. Your notebook can handle with 2 GB RAM max. End of the story.

Satellite Pro M10 is pretty old notebook model and I am 100% sure BIOS update, as a file, is OK but at this time there was no SP3 and I can imagine there is the problem.
So if you are satisfied how your notebook works leave it and enjoy this oldie. Do not need BIOS update at all.

Upgrading MK4026GAX drive to MK8032MAG on my Satellite Pro L20 but the bios will not recognise the MK8032GAX but laptop finds it if connected as external drive ( even disk management ) but as an internal hard drive the bios not not recognise it.
I even cloned the drive but bios will not recognise it , even before cloning and formatting it correctly bios will not recognise the MK8032GAX drive . I'm assured they are compatible and I believe that the new MK8032GAX drive is not corrupted because all data on it can be accessed as external drive.
Please advise

After replacing an old HDD with a new SSD Samsung (EVO 250 GB) on a TOSHIBA Satellite M70-160 (cloning went fine with Acronics true image), I got a PXE error-no boot file received (computer was trying to boot from LAN).

I went to bios (ver 1.10) and see that computer didn't see any HDD drive at all (indication None was next to the HDD).
There isn't any case to hardware problem (S ATA pins of new SSD are very tight to motherboard).

The hole idea was to keep for a 1-2 year more, my windows xp system. . . . (my old HDD is a Fujitsu MHV2080BH with a SATA connector. . . ).

I recieved recently message from Toshiba Service Software that I could (should) update my BIOS.(1.20) to BIOS 1.50 . My Satellite L50-C is just few weeks old. Do anybody recomend me to do that or is not necessary to take such a risk that my Laptop will not work after upgrading?
Many Thanks and best regards from Austria

A:Satellite L50-C - BIOS Update 1.50

Well, I have a L50D-C and the BIOS updates solved a few issues that I was having on startup. Your model is slightly different so I don't know what issues you may have if any. Unless your system suffers from some sort of I/O software issue I wouldn't recommend it. Every BIOS behaves differently to all hardware and you may want to upgrade your hardware later. You will likely need to match it with the best BIOS available if that happens and it's important to note that you can't downgrade your BIOS(Not easily at least). So keep the BIOS you have for now until you notice some hardware issues when upgrading hardware or software drivers.

Hi this is my first post.

There is an updated BIOS version available Satellite P50-C BIOS-WIN 1.40 via the Service Station.
Has anyone managed to install this?

I tried to install it and an installation program "InsydeFlash V5.29" appeared on the screen with a status "Initialisation..."
The window also showed a warning at the bottom of the window in large red text "Do not switch off your computer"
The processor cooling fan spun up and it seemed that something was happening, however the time in the bottom right of the screen was not changing and no progress was displayed on the status window either. So after about 25-30 mins I pressed the power button to switch off the notebook.
The BIOS update failed and luckily my Toshiba is still alive

I've never has a Toshiba before - so is this InsydeFlash installer a legitimate program and does it work on windows 10?

A:Updating BIOS on Satellite P50-C

It is legitimate, and I've had it work for me on Win10. By mistake I went from 1.20 to 5.00 (offered as an update for the P50-C, but not the P50t-C), and now I can't flash 1.40 as the installer complains it's too old. Since there is no information as to what is in each BIOS update, and since everything still works, I've gone down the route of caution and will not be installing any BIOS updates until I know they do something useful. I advise caution on the BIOS updates in general - legitimate as they are, they are the only updates that could turn your laptop into a paperweight.
