Y510P 59373392: SSD upgrade via UltraBay?

Q: Y510P 59373392: SSD upgrade via UltraBay?

Hello, I'm new to Lenovo and I'm about to buy one of the Y510P (59373392) with single graphics and the 1TB version. The last question I've got is whether it is possible to install an additional SSD via the DVD slot-in. I don't need the DVD drive, so it would be wonderful to install a 128GB or 256GB SSD. I've read some topics and saw that the motherboard doesn't have a mSATA connection but it must have a NGFF connection if I'm right. Since I'm not very experienced with laptops, here are a few more questions 1) If it is possible to install an additional SSD, what products are available?2) Where do I get the UltraBay adapter?3) Would it then be possible to make the SSD the bootable drive? Thanks in advance!

A: Y510P 59373392: SSD upgrade via UltraBay?

hi thewavelength,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

You can use a caddy for this.
http://hddcaddy.com/en/lenovo-ibm-hdd-caddy/432-lenovo-ideapad-y510p-hdd-caddy.html

But the SSD you can use here is a 2.5 SSD not the msata one.
this kind :
http://www.crucial.com/store/ssd.aspx

ODD can be set as primary boot and should be able to boot windows from it.
BIOS has to be set to legacy.

Hope this helps,
Cheers!

I have the lenovo y510p (59370015). It has a disk drive in the Ultrabay. Does this mean that there is no Nvidia graphics card in the laptop? If this is the case, then why are there a bunch of Nvidia files on it? If this is not the case then how do I get the card working, I see it with a Error Code 43 in device manager.

Hello, I bought a y510p in december, and ever since getting SLI to work after the Win 8.1 upgrade, I've been completely dissapointed by the performance of the ultrabay GPU. It overheats and crashes the nvidia driver in minutes. While the on board GPU remains at acceptable temps, the ultrabay GPU will steadily rise in temperature untill the driver crashes, while playing somewhat demanding games like Bioshock Infinite, Witcher 2 or Wargame AirLand Battle. Ironically I get far batter performance in these games, if I disable SLI and only run the games on the on board GPU. In less intensive games like Red Orchestra 2, temps are not critical and SLI works fine - this is however a moot point, since I would be able to run these games just fine without an extra GPU. I paid a lot of money for that extra GPU, and seeing it being effectively useless is quite infuriating.  Inb4: Yes, I have the newest drivers. Yes, I've cleaned for dust. Yes, I've undervolted the CPU and underclocked the ultrabay GPU and drastically reduced the in game graphics quality - which brought me to the conclusion that I get better quality disabling SLI altogether.  Unless there is a solution to this, I will absolutely be taking the machine back, as in its current state, I feel that the ultrabay card is effectively useless. Futhermore I get the feeling that Lenovo just jammed it in there without any consideration as to whether it would actually work out practically.  Below i... Read more

Hello, Last week i received my Y510P from a reseller here in Lithuania, and ran into a *slight* problem. When playing more demanding games (though i wouldnt call borderlands 2 a very demanding game), the screen freezes and the sound hangs. Occasionally the display would turn pitch black (sometimes the drivers just reset with screen backlight still on). I checked memory, sshd, cpus and main gpus for errors, but none were found. I have no idea how to test the ultrabay though... Temps are pretty high, but definetly not critical. CPU runs below 85c under load, main gpu runs at around 75c, only ultrabay runs hotter, but i've seen people saying that theirs run above 95c and it still works fine. Mine usually crashes when it reaches 91-93c. It reaches those temps in about 30-60 minutes, steadily heating up.  I tried removing and re inserting, but it didnt have any effect. Im stumped. Sorry for rambling on so long. I hope somebody can help me pinpoint the problem, and maybe help fix it. Hi,I may be repeating the topic, but recently i had to revert back to Win 8.1, as the Track pad and later on keyboard also stopped working. Further I started to get random BSOD's always  giving new driver errors. So finally switched back to Win 8.1.Does anyone has a workaround for this so that I can upgrade to Win 10, as I think 31 July is the last date  for upgrading to Win 10 from Win 8.1, or stick with Win 8..1.Appreciate any help regarding this.

Hello, for professional purposes I plan to upgrade the existing 8gbof available RAM on my laptop to 12gb or 16gb, depending on price range. I know next to zero about RAM consideration for optimal compability/performance. I uploaded two images of the currently installed RAM cards. There are still 2 slots available, could someone point me to recommended/compatible RAM cards? (If I can order it from amazon, the better). Thank you for the support.?

Hey, I know there are already a few topics with the same subject, however none have the exact same situation as mine as most are US based. I too have a powerful Lenovo Y510P SLI with a Intel Centrino N2230 wifi card. I am buying a new router for my student room and since I want to buy things that can last for a few years, opted for a wifi AC router (probably an Asus one). But, this laptop won't support it... I looked in the technical maintaince manual to find which wifi cards are supported for the Y510P, there is one Wifi AC card for the Y410P, but according to various posts will also work in the Y510P as they share the same BIOS whitelist. I don't want to flash the BIOS with a custom modded one which removes the whitelist. (I flashed a desktop Asus motherboard to run OSX, went great, runs well, but I can't experiment with this laptop, need it for university.). So I Googled and Ebayed the partnumer and this one came up: Ebay Link, which says "Only for Lenovo/IBM laptops such as Y510P" should be fine right? Only thing is it is 40 USD, Dutch customs will charge 21% on top of it so that makes 48 USD, and the Dutch postal office will charge anywhere between 15-20 USD for paperwork for importing goods. So that makes an total of 68 USD... so that almost doubles the cost of the upgrade...  I used the FRU number for this card: WLAN, WiFi AC+BT4.0, Ltn BCM4352+20702 2x2AC+BT4.0 HMC which is 20200381, and put in the search engine in the "part number" ... Hopefully this'll help some people thinking of upgrading . NOTE: Some people are having issues with wireless cards after upgrading. I'm not sure of solution yet, but I would recommend predownloading the Windows 10 drivers from Intel's website before the upgrade. - So far drivers have not solved issue. Not sure of solution yet. Everything went smoothly for me. All fiels, programs, drivers, and settings transferred from my Windows 7 install to Windows 10 (and also from 8.1 to 10 on my Dell, so I assum it'll work on a Lenovo too). Upgrade process was painless and took about 20 minutes. Only temporary issue was video drivers, but that got solved later. Make sure you check for updates in Windows Update right after you upgrade; there's a day one patch they put out and it fixes quite alot of bugs (1GB of them actually). This fixed any driver issues I had and made my screen resolution normal, as it was previously running 800x600 or something, so don't freak out if your screen look weird at first. It automatically changes your default programs though, so if you use Chrome or Firefox you'll need to change it back to that from the new Edge browser. Otherwise, most settings were imported. So far I have found nothing that is incompatible with Windows 10 on my computer; however, beware that you will need to reinstall your anti-virus when Windows prompts you, as it is uninstalled prior to the upgrade. Doesn't cause any issues though and your computer is not at risk ... Read more

I purchased my Y510P back in Q2 2014, it was already on Win 8 when I purchased it. Everything was working fine even after the  SLI issue with  Win 8.1 which was fixed through a BIOS update that was available here in their product support page. During that time I worked more on other things and didnt really notice anything about the GPU and its update. I was able to update my laptop to Win 10 (back in Q4 2015) and I'm currently unsure if it already installed the anniversary update. Recently, I tried some few games and noticed that the second GPU seems not be working during any games I've launched. I ran Unigine Heaven Benchmark and seems that the SLI is detected, checked the device manager both hardwares are detected, and updated to the latest GPU driver. But still seems to be not working. Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

They're RAM sticks, not cards, and they're fairly easy to change out. I would suggest looking for something in the 1866mhz speed, though I think you need lower voltage memory. So I'd get something 1.35v or lower.

Hello, I only found out after purchasing the Y510P laptop that it for some strange reason does not support 5Ghz networks, only 2.4Ghz. This results in me having insanely slow connection every single night around peak hours (7-11pm), and I'm unable to do anything like watching movies, playing games or download stuff. Does anyone know exactly how to upgrade the wireless card on this laptop so it supports 5Ghz networks? Do I have to go out and buy another wireless card, or is it software upgrades like drivers only? I'm not a computer major so a walkthrough would be appreciated. Thanks.

As a newbie to this site, I am not sure exactly where to post this question, so I’m guessing it is a hardware issue.

I recently acquired an IBM ThinkPad T20/T21. This unit contains what IBM calls an Ultrabay 2000 port on the side of the unit. This is the source of my question/problem. The Ultrabay port and software allows the hot swapping of the interchangeable FDD and a CD-ROM modules. Under the installed Win 95 OS, the Ultrabay worked fine.

In order to gain use of the USB port on the unit, I just completed an upgrade from Win 95 to Win 98 SE. I upgraded using an OEM disk and in the end wound up with both a Windows directory (for the Win 95 OS) and a Windows.000 (for the Win 98 OS) on the HDD. After a little re-mapping, I’ve gotten the audio, video, modem and mouse/trackpoint to work fine. My problem is the Ultrabay. Even with the latest IBM drivers, the Ultrabay port/computer will not recognize the CD-ROM. If I boot up with the FDD installed, both Windows Explorer and the Ultrabay S/W recognize the module and everything works fine. If I then hot swap to the CD-ROM, the Ultrabay SW sees the drive but indicates it is inoperable by placing a large red ”X” through its icon in the system tray. Windows Explorer does not see the CD-ROM at all and still reports an FDD. If I boot up with the CD-ROM in the port, Windows Explorer sees the CD-ROM and allows full use of it, the Ultrabay SW however continues to show the red “X”. If I try to hot swap back to the FDD the system loc... Read more

Picked up a T-61 for a song and love the beast, but I'm having a problem with the hard drive Ultrabay that came with the Laptop. The drive isn't being recognized.  I've tried several SATA drives of sizes between 50 gig to 1 Terabyte, and all fail to recognize in the OS. (I've tried Win 7 and 10) The drive shows up in the Bios, regardless of which of the actual physical drives I've installed, and passes the Bios diagnostic, and the Drive shows up in the Device manager, but the OS can't see it. Deeply confused, hoping for a silver bullet. The DVD Drive Ultrabay works just fine, but no HDD in the other bay can be found by the OS, any suggestions?

Just as the title states. When the y400/500 were first announced and then released, I was so excited. Using the concept of removeable slots,, as found in business machines, to augment a gaming machine seemed like a brilliant idea. And it was, they sold like hotcakes. The y410/510p made some incremental improvements, like activating the iGPU with Optimus and increasing the resolution on the 14" model. As expected, they were popular as well. Then came the y40/50 and now the y700 series. Lenovo completely designed their gaming lineup, removing the ultrabay and cutting fuctionality. Why? I can have 2 full sized HDD/SSDs and a 42mm M.2 installed in my 14" y410p, but the 15" y50/700 only has 1 full sized bay. Just what. Then instead of 850/860M SLI we get a single 860M in the y50, which was updated to a 960M in the y700. Yes the 860M is a decent card, and beats the 755M handily, but it's practically on par with 755M SLI. I just find it strange that such a great concept on such popular machines was cut. I'm sure there were issues, but removing the ultrabay just makes Lenovo's newer laptops just another crop of mid ranged machines. They lost a lot of what made them special, and what I feel made the brand take off after the y580 generation.

Hi!

I didn't know where to post this specifically. Hence I chose the General Support section.

I have a ThinkPad T530. The main disk is an SSD (on which Windows 8 is installed and is the primary boot device). In the ultrabay slot, I have a 500GB hard disk. There used to be an optical drive here. I replaced it with the stock hard disk since I needed storage more than optical drive.

Anyway, on startup (as well as resume from standby and hibernate), I don't need the disk to be recognized. I want it to be done manually. Is there a way to stop windows from recognizing the device every time it boots? Presently, I am doing a "Safely remove device" after every start up, which is kind of annoying.

Hope you got what I am trying to say.

Thanks,

Hello everyone. I have recently got a new ThinkPad L540. Since I need to use Windows 7 (TrueCrypted company Installation on normal SSD) and Ubuntu I bought a HDD Caddy for the UltraBay together with a 1TB HDD. My problem is, that I can not select the second HDD (HDD1) in the BIOS to boot from. It does not show the name of the drive, just HDD1. HDD0 has a name that indicates that it is the Intel SSD. The new drive is visible and usable in Windows and when I use a USB-Drive to install Linux on that second Drive.Furthermore I switched the SSD and the HDD and the L540 boots sraight up into Ubuntu. When I switch back its boots Windows 7 again. During the Ubuntu installation I tried both, writing the GRUB2 bootloader to the root-partition or to the beginning of the HDD (schould be the same since the root-partition is the first on the drive). Gparted is also thelling me that the root-partition is bootable. I hope somebody has an idea!Thank you very much for your help in advance!!!

I recently bought an ultrabay adapter off ebay that was compatible with the T400/T400S.  The Lenovo part would be ThinkPad Serial Hard Drive Bay Adapter III, P/N 43N3412.  I took out the original 250GB HDD and put an Intel X25-V in the main HD bay.  Then I put the original drive in the Ultrabay Adapter.  When I power up the machine the Ultrabay drive spins up for a second and the light on the adapter comes on and then the drive turns off.  The Ultrabay drive is not found by the BIOS, I have 1.20-1.07 installed.  I called Lenovo tech support and was told that there is no Ultrabay adapter for the T410, and the website confirms this when I search for storage adapter accessories for it.  Is there some way to get a second HDD to work in the Ultrabay? [EDIT]The solution. Got way too many ThinkPads around here and decided to retire my T61.  It had a 128gb Intel SSD I cloned it and installed a small hard drive so it can be reused/recycled.  I cloned my T400's HDD to the SSD.  Good for day to day use and I have gobs of cloud storage.  After 4 years or so the $00 gb HDD only took about half the 128 SSD.  My Ultrabay frame is supposed to be here tomorrow and I intend to install the 500 gb drive in it.  I'd like to use it for my primary storage.  I'm clueless as to the best way to do this.  I've never considered doing this before but realized that I hardly ever used the CD/DVD drive and unlike the MacBook, I can still swap them with out a set of tools and an hour or so to do it.

I would like to replace the DVD drive in a ThinkPad P70 with a 2.5" hard disk, and I have trouble finding the right adapter. I have found several references here and on other sites to the part 00NY314. I have ordered it from IBM, and it's indeed the right shape, but it's only the plastic shell with a metal bottom, and there is no connector for the HDD. Here's a picture of the part that I have received. Note the absence of connectors. ?I have called Lenovo support, and they told me that the part 0B47315 might be the right one. I have ordered that one, too, and while it has all the necessary connectors, it doesn't have the right shape, so I believe it's not appropriate for the P70. Did anyone actually order the part 00NY314? Were you able to connect the HDD? Where did you order it from? Did IBM ship the wrong part? What's the correct part number for the adapter?

Hi everyone, If you don't want to read everything, just scroll down to the underlined part  For 3 years now, my Y500 (gt650m sli, second gpu in Ultrabay) had been working fine. But now, there is a problem. My primary gpu, i.e. the one attached to the motherboard, not the one connected via Ultrabay, appears to be broken. The Problem:Occasionally, the primary gpu has malfunctions. Therefore, I have to use the device manager to switch it off. Otherwise, my laptop tends to reboot out of an instant after running for some time. There are times when I can use the gpu for several hours without any problems, but there also are times when I cannot use it at all. When I switch it off in the dev.man., move my notebook, and switch it on again, there is a probability that the gpu might work. Hence, I assume a hardware issue. The Story:The problem first appeared after a really nasty circumstance; I took my notebook with me in its bag (a rather fluffy bag to prevent the notebook from blows) and suddenly, I realised that the bag became hot. The reason was a Windows update started out of standby... The notebook crashed with 34% of the updates installed. Afterwards, I had to reinstall Windows or nothing would work. (The crash at 34% seems to originate in the empty battery, but that's not for sure)After the reinstallation, said issue occured for the first time. Hence, I reinstalled the OS several times. Currently, I am using the OS from the OKR with the automatic (inescapable) updat... Read more

Or could it be a software issue... any help would be hugely appreciated. One of the main reasons I acquired this laptop was the use of the ultrabay batteries. Thanks

So I keep getting this pop-up (Att 1), saying that I can't eject my HD b/c it's in use by other programs, close any applications, etc, etc. This is occurring frequently often but not in a consistent pattern.

[Edit: I'm not trying to eject the drive, and don't want to - it's my full-time data drive.]

I found the associated entries in Event Viewer (pasted below). Anyone got pointers on how to determine what is kicking this off?

Is it possible to overclock the GPU and CPU a lil' bit in my y510p ?? If yes, could you please tell me how much can i boost it up and if it's worth it though...?

A:Overclocking GPU and CPU in y510p

If you use the Intel Xtreme Tuning utility you can adjust the multipliers but that is all. The CPU already runs way to hot (and throttles as a result) so overclocking it will only make it worse. I did the opposite and undervolted mine so not only does it run cooler but it doesn't throttle anymore so it actually runs faster then a stock one.

So, my y510p is having really anoying problem.  Sometimes computer works fine (really rarely) but usually it just doesnt start. I need to press powerbutton atleast 50 times until it finally start, and when it starts the screen is just blinking black and keys are blinking too, the problem becoming more general when it gets "cold" (Cold = normal indoor temperature 22 celsius) it also takes ages to get windows screen I have already visited warranty with my laptop and it was there 1.5 months, and they changed keyboard (why?!?!) and send it back, they said that they run some tests without any problems. Then i got my computer back, NOTHING CHANGED, same problems and all, what should i do?!  I have already soft-reseted, reseted bios and reseted whole system, nothing works!  Could you please be in touch with the store i bought it from, because I want my money back for not-working laptop worth 1200e in my country. They said that i need to send my computer back to warranty, for another 1.5 month journey (what is over what they promised, they said 10-15 workdays)  PLEASE HELP ME! anything but not another warranty trip! I also have very good video of the problem if you want me to send it to you.  My model is the one with 750M and 24gb ssd cache.

I installed Windows 10 last year and had to uninstall it due to wi-fi connectivity dropping.   Searching the internet, this seemed to be a frequent problem and Lenova did not support Windows 10 for the Y510P and did not provide drivers. I really liked windows 10 and would love to go back to it.    Is anyone running it, and how did you resolve the wi-fi connectivity issue?    I see on the Lenova Website they still don't list Windows 10 for this model.    Too bad.  Makes me really dislike Lenova products when they don't support OS upgrades.

So I have a Lenovo Y510P IdeaPad, I upgraded it to Windows 10 last December and wanted to downgrade it back to Windows 8/8.1 due to some issues that many said are due to the fact that the model doesn't really support Windows 10 thus I experience the problems. However, since it has been more than a month from the upgrade, I can't just roll it back to previous OS and am wondering if there is any way I can find out what my original product key for the pre-activated Windows 8 so I can perform a clean reinstall with it.

If windows came pre-installed on your laptop, the key might be on its certificate of authenticity. Alternatively, you can obtain the key using third party softwares like ProduKey. It'll display the currently activated key on your system.

I bought one of the first Lenovo IdeaPad y510p. Having a dual gpu made for a lot of gaming fun. Yesterday, the room filled up with the smell of an electrical burn. I checked the underside the Lenovo. It had been hotter. I heard workers outside my window and figured that the smell may come from them. A few minutes later very thick smoke came out of the left air vent and made a column in the air. I quickly pulled out the power cord and battery. Luckily, the house is still standing. I understand that electronics eventually fail. Yet, this seems unsafe and dangerous. What if I weren't in the room to act quickly? There should be some way to report this. The support page to send a message has been down with an under maintenance message for days.

Hey, I bought Lenovo y510p laptop like 2 weeks ago. It is the SLI version of the y510p. The laptop worked just fine when I was playing with it, ran CSGO and Skyrim on Ultra settings over 60 fps. Couple days ago, my friend broke my charger, and I went to Walmart to buy a new one. I bought the Duracell charger which is 90 watts and it was compatible with my laptop. Then I plugged it in, and tried to play csgo but the fps was like from 5 to 15. I have no idea how this happened. I also took off my battery and just tried to play it without it and just charging the laptop, and when I opened csgo the laptop shut down. I already made virus tests and there was nothing in the viruses. Please help me if you can, I really wouldn't want to send this to the warranty since it's brand new and propably gonna take atleast a month. Thank you already!

My guess is that the Charger may not be compatible with that laptop....90watts yes but has it got the correct DC output.

Also you didn't say how your original charger got broken. like was it attached to the laptop at the time?

What could be happening is..when you plug the new power supply in it is not the correct power your PC expects so it disregards it and runs off the battery at lower everything. As when you take the battery out it will not run at all. Easy place for damage is where the power plug goes into the laptop.

Hello there, I have had my IdeaPad Y510p Laptop - 59369999 for 2 years without any problems, until today.  I started watching a video & everything froze for a good 5 minutes.  I held the power button until my laptop shut down, when I turned it on it said "scanning and repairing drive c". It started up normally, I gave it time, moved the mouse once everything had loaded & it froze again. Then the screen went blank with the cursor working, then the cursor dissappeared. Does anyone know of this is a simple fix? Thank you!

A:Y510P Freezing After Start Up

My guess is that the hard drive is dying.  If it will start, try getting a copy of CrystalDiskInfo (free),  Otherwise, see if you can hook up the drive to another machine to test it and to get as much as you can off of it.

I'm thinking that the hard drive might be failing, and so looking at getting a new hard drive, and finding someone to replace it. When I look at the Task Manager, it will show "Firefox (Not Responding)" for example, I can try and end task, but that has no immediate effect. If I try to open up anything else, it too "pauses" and may take a LONG time to open up. Messing with the task manager too much will cause it too, to stop responding for a long time. Eventually, Firefox will close, and things start behaving as normal. Found a possible fix (workaraound) of the famous screen flicker problem. I've tried all of the proposed fixes found anywhere on the web and nothing worked for more than 5 minutes. I also sent it to be serviced, came back even worse. The screen would go crazy when showing high contrast images with a lot of black. The flicker was most prominent when testing the pixel-walk(inversion) on this website:http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/inversion.phpIf you have the same problem, try applying pressure on the LCD frame in one of the corners. In my case the flicker went away. I put a piece of fabric between the plastic and the metal LCD frame and after some fiddling I managed to find a sweet spot with no flicker. My laptop is y510p with 755M SLI and FullHD screen.Try at your own risk!Cheers

A:y510p screen flicker FIX!

Ok, I have an update. The flickering can be fixed with a bit of DIY. There's a band cable attaching the display circuit to the metal frame holding the LCD. This band is glued with some sort of conductive glue that goes bad over time, messing up the electronics somehow, I guess preventing the capacitors from discharging properly, dunno.Try and make your own conductive band, I made mine using aluminum tape, it works very well. No flicker noticeable for over a week.Once again, try at your own risk.

Power cycling is the best way I can describe it. Approximately once a day, my y510p will power cycle all of its USB ports simultaneously, this is the two USB 3.0 ports as well as the USB 2.0 port (which makes things even stranger considering they are on separate controllers). I will lose connection to all devices (for me an external hard drive, USB 3.0 dock, and USB 2.0 mouse) and they will all come up again a moment later as just being plugged in. It is not the same time of day each day. My drivers are up to date. This occurred under Windows 8.1 64-bit and Windows 10 64-bit. There is also no correlation to whether there is a lot of data moving through the ports or if they are just idle.

I have the same battery and charger that came with the computer. I've tried messing with the settings and taking the battery out and putting it back in. I've been to the BIOs screen and looked around. I've searched through forms and everything. I'm about to just buy a new battery for it and see if that fixes it. But I'd like to know what happened so I can prevent it from happening again. Did the battery just get too old and decide to die on me? It's been very frustrating.

Hi all,

Last night, my keyboard suddenly decided it didn't want to work. The following keys rarely work (occasionally after hitting them a gazillion times): 0 (wow it worked just now), p (using on screen keyboard, now 0 is not working so I need onscreen to close these parentheses), colon/semicolon key, and slash/question mark key.

I really hoe this is not a hardware issue as this comuter isnt even 2 years old yet, and having a functioning keyboard is kind of essential. Esecially when some of the affected keys are in your assword... Not sure if the 4 affected keys are connected hysically and thats why theyre acting u together, or if this could have something to do with the fact that the issues arose immediately after some Windows udates.

I would immensely areciate any hel ! Thank you!

A:y510p - keyboard problem

Hi Imjustaguy ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Better to isolate hardware issue from software is to make the computer boot on a rescue media and try typing from it . Using an external USB keyboard and onscreen keyboard further isolate probability of a bad keyboard specially if same thing fails in BIOS (like test typing the affected letter in security password  but NOT to save it , for testing only) .

Update us how it goes.

Hi,  Just before im losing my mind i turn to you guys for help! A back story about the recent events that got me to the problem:My Lenovo Y510P crashed (couldnt boot to windows) a month ago and  needed an HDD replacment according to the tech lab (he is still under warranty). They replaced the HDD and installed  the Windows 8 (i had 10 before the crash) from the hidden parttition, when i got my laptop back, i updated to Windows 10 but it crashed on boot screen (just like it did before the HDD got replaced).I sent it back to the lab, this time they just restored it to Windows 8.I tried to update it to 10 and it got stuck on boot again. My laptop went back and forth 3 times like this until they just sent me the laptop with Windows 10 on it. They deleted my hidden parttition and my SSD (24GB) with the laptop backup data so now i cant restore or format and i dont have any drivers or configurations on the Windows 10.  So heres the problem- It works a lot slower then it used to! it also take 3 times more to boot!i tried to get all the drivers and searched for BIOS configurations and i found that im missing a progrem called ExpressCache.I downloaded it but i don't think it made a diffrence. Is ExpressCache my solution? Maybe i need to configure it?Here is a screenshot with some details of my ExpressCacheHelp me please! i can send it to the lab again but they will just format it...Thanks!  ?

Try turning off and removing the battery first. With adapter charger unplug, press Power button for 15seconds to drain power inside.  Plug in adapter charger and press Novo button instead of the power key to turn it on for the Novo Menu  Choose BIOS setting  On Exit tab , load optimal default then Y then place battery back before save changes and exit.

I recently got my Y510p Ideapad's charging port replaced due to it getting fried. Ever since then my Y510p has been charging however it doesn't register that it is chargingThis is a problem because the GT 750M within the laptop wont turn on unless the laptop registers that it's charging.I am using the correct charger with the correct voltage, etc Is there anyway to fix this issue or at least force the GT 750m to work without having it register the computer is charging? Thanks!

A:Y510P doesn't register it's charging

Hi Keanane ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would you be able to use GT 750m by removing the battery and just running it on the ac adapter, as this would be a way to bypass battery start up of the GPU ?

Hi I just did a clean Windows 10 install and I cannot get the hdmi (or the vga) output to work. I get no signal. I have the single Nvidia version.  I tried as many drivers I could find for the Intel and Nvidia graphics but no success at all.  Hard disk was replaced so I don't have the recovery partition and I don't have the recovery dvd set either. Would anyone that has hdmi output working on windows 10 please tell me what drivers are using?  Thanks

Hello, I bought a Y510P (SLI version) 2,5 years ago (yes, warranty is now expired) and my keyboard stopped working. Two rows of the keyboard didn't respond and after resetting and updating my laptop, contacting lenovo and I had to reset and update another time the problem was still there. Lenovo recommended a repair for my laptop. I declined it because I wanted to see if there were faster/cheaper/better options near my location. Next I searched for a local fast and cheap repair center to repair my laptop because my warranty was over so I had to pay anyway. I found one, send my laptop and a while later they told me it was the keyboard controller chip on the motherboard that was faulty. To repair that they had to replace the whole motherboard. Cost? Around 60% of my original purchase price. Way to much for a student. Went to Lenovo again with this information but of course they couldn't tell me more without a diagnose from their own but I don't want to spend another ?50 on a diagnose. This joke costs me a lot for just the diagnose, let alone the repair.  So my question, does anyone know something about these laptops and do you know if it could be this chip and can it be repaired/replaced instead of a whole motherboard? And, does anybody has experience with the cost of replacing a motherboard with Lenovo? Price in the Lenovo shop for a laptop is just over ?300,- and I don't want to get another offer to repair my laptop voor ?700.  It's sad... Read more

What do?

No but seriously, any suggestions?
I've done some research and this issue might be related to the fact that I mostly use my laptop while it is plugged in. I opened it up and got rid of some dust but to no effect.
Max temperatures reach up to 100°C when it is plugged in, without even gaming or engaging in any other kind of heavy activity. Posting this from my phone cause I'm afraid to fry the poor thing.

I have the y510p with the GT 750M SLI. My charger died on me, and I tried to order one via Amazon provided by a forum thread here a while ago, to only receive an adapter with a 45N0112 modeL number when my adapter is 45N0111.  Tried to to purchase it off Lenovo the other day to which I get an email that the product is "end of life" and now they've taken down the listing. So do tell me Lenovo... How am I to use my laptop without the 170w charger that you provide? No universal charger has that wattage. How the heck could you just shelf something like a charger after its only been about 3 years? I mean I thought your company was fantastic but what the heck man. Do enlighten me as to a guaranteed place to get a 45N0111 charger!!! I haven't been able to use my laptop for a week! Why? BECAUSE I CANT BUY A CHARGER. THANKS.

Hey everybody, I'm writing this for a friend who I've been trying to help with this issue for a while now.He owns a Y510P and is currently running Windows 10 64 Bit on it.His laptop is mostly running fine, he can play certain games including WoW and LoL without an issue. Others, like Path of Exile won't crash completely, but sometimes the graphics driver will crash and recover, blacking out his graphics for a second or so but then resuming. Other games, like Deus Ex: HR, Overwatch, Vermintide or Helldivers seem to randomly crash in a matter of minutes. Either the game crashes back to desktop without a specific error message or the laptop locks up completely and he needs to restart. This seems to be somewhat related to the load on the system, as he can safely sit in the (already rendered) lobbies of Vermintide and Helldivers or play the practice range in Overwatch which doesn't have other player characters. Once in an actual game, the crashes quickly start happening. I quickly found people suggesting this might be an issue with the power-saving feature when the drivers mistakenly switch back to the integrated card for just a moment, which seems to be causing trouble for other people. But disabling the integrated card via BIOS can't be done without a third-party unlocked BIOS which I won't risk him flash on his laptop and possibly brick it. Other suggestions like forcing the game to use the nVidia card didn't work, either, cause those options were either not... I just want to comment on this - because I'm having the same issue.  I've used the laptop for a number of months without crashing issues, and it seems to have cropped up pretty recently.

I think it might have something to do with the driver version?  It also only seems to happen with certain games.  In particular, War Thunder and GTA4.  I play Dota 2 quite a bit and don't seem to have any problems at all.

Hi,I have a problem when playing any games with SLI enabled. Games crashes at random times, sometimes even after ~5mins. So at that specific time the screen goes black and the game minimizes (or I try to minimize it by myself). After that the message pops out saying "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered". I have latest Nvidia drivers (v344.11). I'm running Windows 8.1 x64. The problem occured with any version of display drivers I've installed so far.

Hi all, I have the lenovo y510p SLI 750m version and recently (2-3 days ago) my cpu fan on the left side of the laptop stopped working with the dust removal tool. I removed the lid and I can see both fans spinning just fine, however only the right one actually performs the dust removal when prompted. The other one stays queit and I don't feel any air pushed out of the left side. I can feel it on the right like normal though. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Have you updated your video card drivers with the latest drivers from the Nvidia website?  Have you monitored your GPU temperatures to see if either of your GPUs are overheating?  You can try using GPU-Z to monitor your GPUs while gaming.

Hello, bear with me because it is quite a long confusing story. I have recently send the y510p away to get the screen repaired. Because I needed something to work with meanwhile I took the SSD from y510p and put this in an older laptop with a clean install of windows10. In the y510p I put an old HDD with Elementary OS installed on it. Today I received the y510p and turned it on, the screen worked perfectly and I could use the Elementary OS installed on the HDD. I then took the HDD out again and put the SSD in, I was planning to do a clean install on it again but it still had windows 10 installed from the older laptop.I put everything back together and powerd it on, the screen lights up but remains black.I hooked up an external monitor through vga and saw that the windows 10 had booted from the older laptop. When I try to get in the bios (I think it's F2) both monitors remain black. I have the feeling it goes to the bios, but cant display it on the monitor? (I cant find a way to display the bios on the external monitor.)Could it be that the motherboard doesnt recognize the new screen? At the moment the only way to get any visual on the main monitor is to boot Elementary OS from the old HDD. Please help for I have no other ideas. JTADDED: I can currently use the SSD with w10 on the y510p through the external monitor. But I would like to do a clean install and ofcourse use the main monitor aswell(The main monitor does not appear i... Read more

A:Y510p - problem starting laptop

Hi dudescuman ,

Greetings.

Take the opportunity to back up anything that you would need from the machine.
Running lenovo diagnostics with temperature checker would help isolate points of failure.

BIOS and Lenovo logo should still appear even without a harddrive .
How is the power LED and Battery LED status (page29) ?
Would pressing the caps and num lock on / off show any response from the leds?

Update us how it goes.

Just realized my dvd drive does not play DVDs since I upgraded to win 10. It doesn't even recognize dvds, showing me only a desktop.ini file instead. It plays CDs just fine and it burns DVDs as storage device, though it **may** only be burning them as a CD, haven't really tested it. I would like to get an updated driver from lenovo, but I can't get past the Q&A session, it either doesn't know my laptop or thinks I'm running win 8.1 or 7. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Mike

Hi all, Last night, my keyboard suddenly decided it didn't want to work. Thank you!

BSOD-xperts:
I've suddenly been afflicted with BSOD's on my Lenovo Y510P running Win 8.1. Everything was fine until about 2 weeks ago and then I started experiencing multiple BSOD's to the point that I had to boot in SafeMode. After doing some research, it looked like the issues were related to video (NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M) and wireless/bluetooth drivers. I upgraded all of those and everything was fine for a week until this morning when I got another BSOD. After looking for the bug check that it reported, I stumbled on this forum and saw some excellent responses so I thought I'd give it a whirl. I downloaded BlueScreenView and ran that and I've attached the output. I have also attached output from the MiniToolBox tool. I also tried to upload the mini-dump files but I get a message saying I'm "not permitted to upload this kind of file" but I'm happy to do so if I'm allowed to.  Here is a link the output from the Speecy tool as well - http://speccy.piriform.com/results/j7BzfFXyiX3xHgrhWQqHjXV. Would someone be so kind as to give it a look and let me know your thoughts? Thanks!

Hi, I wanna turn on the laptop and have the Num Lock key activated. Right now I've edited the registry value from "HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard/InitialKeyboardIndicators". I changed the value "2147483648" by number "2". The issue is still there, cause not ALWAYS I turn on the laptop, the Num Lock is activated, just sometimes, which is also weird too. So... what do I have to do to set Num Lock to activated by default when turning on? Thanks!

Hello!

I want to know how to identify if the second graphics card is working on my Lenovo Y510P.

Each time a turn on something resource intensive, my left gpu is working like crazy with all the heat coming out, and the one on the right seems like not spinning, or spinning but very slowly, and almost no heat is coming out.

Is it supposed to be like that?

Also, can't find Energy Management option to use 'Dust removal' feature.

I'm using Lenovo Y510P 750 SLI on Windows 10.

Cheers,
N

PS. I also want to mention that in NVIDIA Control Panel "SLI Configuration is set tp Maximize 3D Performance" and PhysX settings to Auto-Select.

A:Y510p - Identify if both fans are working

Correct me if I'm wrong but, I dont think GPU's spin, are you referring to the fan? If so, then one fan is for the CPU while the other is for the GPU, Intel GPU is integrated in the CPU while the dedicated GPU has its own fan.
