HP pavilion broken hinge and case

Q: HP pavilion broken hinge and case

Extremely frustrated! I have had the pavilion laptop for a couple of years now, so warranty has expired but soon after I started having issues with the left hand hinge. it has gotten to the point where the entire laptop case has cracked open. I cannot find a proper technician to fix the hinge.....each one just makes a bigger mess of things. The laptop (otherwise) is still in great working condition, thus it will not be viable for me to replace.Could you please advise on a proper technician who will use genuine hp parts to fix the hinge and case?

I have a HP m6-n010DX ENVY TouchSmart 15.6 Inch Touch Screen Laptop and I take great care of it.  However, as I was opening it the other day, the hinge on the left side pushed the bottom case and broke the screw hole.  Now everytime that I open it, it pushes the bottom case.  I beleive the hinge and the case are both defective and I have seen a lot of complaints on this.  This is no longer under warranty, and I was wonding if there was a product recall for this factory defect?

My daughter has a Pavilion 15-p248sa notebook and the right hand hinge has snapped inside the display assembly. The broken hinge has now inturn damaged the display housing (it has cracked the plastic). I am quite annoyed because the laptop is only 13 months old, yes 1 month out of warranty. Being an IT engineer I opened the laptop thinking it was the screws had come loose, the base seemed ok - I then checked inside the display and the metal support on the hinge which runs up the side of screen to add strength had snapped. This surely can only be a manufacturing defect - and reading the many other posts it seems common. I have downloaded the service guide to identify the parts and looked them up on Partsurfer but it says that I can only order from an authorised dealer, all of the dealers listed either dont recognise the part numbers or do not sell to private buyers. Please help, my daughter is devastated, she saved up her birthday money to buy the laptop and now it is broken :-(

Hello,The hinges on the screen side of my HP pavilion 15-p has come off. It happened a day ago and was running without any issues except for a slightly stiff feeling when I opened and closed the laptop a week ago. Yesterday it cracked open completely. The screen and touch screen functions still work. I have read through the forums and seems like folks are getting help on this issue. I am also out of warranty and it would be greatly appreciated if this known issue could be fixed.Thank you.

If there is a fix, I need it to be done quickly (I will pay for expedited shipping). I'm not sure if I have a warrantee on the laptop, it was a gift. The laptop is an envy m6. One of the screws that holds my HP Envy 17 - j013cl laptop casing together no longer attaches to anything. It appears that the screw was once attached to a plastic fitting, but now that fitting is broken and the pieces of plastic are loose inside the laptop. When I open the laptop, the casing pulls apart near the hinge. I purchased the factory refurbished laptop in January of this year. How can the laptop be repaired? One source told me that they would have to replace the entire cover ... IF they could find one.  Is this repair covered under warranty? I just found a topic for the same issue with the dv7 "dv7 Left hinge pulling case apart? What the heck!".  It appears that HP have some real widespread problems with the left hinge of their laptop casings!

Hi, I would like to understand how my problem will be dealt with as I am now working with a machine which is very physically fragile and I would like to get it fixed as quickly as possible so that no further damage is done to the machine. My machine is covered by warranty, but going through ww.hp.com/contacthp the site didn't agree.  So I put in my details and attached the invoice for the machine which says that I have a Care Pack which means that it still is in warranty.  Now I need to wait for 1 day until I get a response?  Very disappointingly, the page where I filled these details in did not even send me a "receipt" email, so I need to wait 1 day, hope that my warranty validation request was actually made, and hope for a response.  If I don't get a response, how then do I get back in touch (via what medium, I wonder?  it seems that I am not allowed to make a phone call?) So, hopefully this will be resolved by tomorrow.  At that point I can then type in again a description of the fault. Then what will happen?  I wait another day for someone to call me?  How many days will this take?  What can't I just phone someone?  Or even go on a "chat"?  I'm not allowed to do that as my warranty has expired (except that it hasn't actually expired - that's an HP mistake). The problem is that the case has broken at the location of the screws near the hinges on one side.  The scr... It appears that this is a common hardware problem for over two years, based on  the posts.  This is my son's laptop for college, so we have now had to swap out our home Hp Pavilion laptop with him.  We purchased a two year HP warranty, and it just recently expired.  This is our family's seventh HP desktop or laptop.  How is HP dealing with this issue?

I have the same problem documented in the thread: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Pavilion-g6-Broken-Left-Hinge/t... There isn't an option to post a reply to that thread. The left hinge of my Pavillion G6 broke like quite a number of other G6s.  When opening the laptop, the display works in some positions.  In other positions, the display is completely white.  The laptop top and bottom separate a bit while opening the laptop. Was there a recall for this problem as there are quite a number of incidences of the left hinge breaking under normal usage?

Like many others have experienced/posted, the left hinge on my pavilion has bulged and cracked the casing. I take care of my laptops and have not dropped it at any time. I first noticed the hinge problem last night, and I can now no longer open the laptop with hearing a grinding sound. This laptop is 2-3 years old and no longer under any warranties. I'm a student and cannot afford the $250+ repairs. Is hp doing anything about this common problem?

I have a HP Pavilion dv7t that has a broken hinge. It has slowly become a problem. First the screw fell out and we tried to replace it but it did not hold it tight enough. I have been very carefull with my laptop and I very rarely move it from its location in our house. Now I realize that my free support ended last week September 25th.  I wish I had looked into the problem sooner because I have been dealing with it for months. I have seen the other posts and seen where some have tried to get this fixed and others have been sent a new laptop. What are my options at this point? Will it cost me to call support and ask what they recommend I do? I am very disappointed in HP because I have up to now had great trust in this company and it's products.

I have been informed that this is a known issue to HP and have had my notebook repaired twice previously (once under warranty and the other time outside of warranty). HP were really good about fixing the issue for me for free (even had a local HP service company do all the work). The hinge has now broken again (third time in 2 years). I have found a forum that is looking at a class action against HP regarding this default (apparently the issue isn't restricted just to the DV6). I am not looking at anything so extreme. I was wondering if HP would just continue to fix the problem with my notebook or make any other offer. Not sure I would want another HP notebook though (the overheating, short battery life and drain, and broken hinge have all really made this notebook anything but portable or reliable - and that it isn't confined to the DV6 makes me very weary of buying any other HP notebook in the future). Would they possibly look at giving me a refund (part) for the notebook? I just don't want to have to take it in to get fixed every 6 months or so (most others are reporting similar time periods for the broken hinges). Opinions? Will give them a call tomorrow too. Just sick of these issues ... I bought HP expecting high quality and competency (they have the name and the premium price ... their product, the DV6, has really disappointed me).

A:Pavilion DV6 Notebook Broken Hinge

I am having the same issue and mine wasn't under warranty so I called hp parts store and they charged me $109 for a new bottom bezel since the hinge tore the bezel apart. I have been using hp for years but if this is a known issue I am very upset at having to pay this much to replace it.  The computer was never dropped and it busted through the bottom case suring normal usage.   I think hp should stand by this problem since it is a known issue and refund me for the cost of the part.  Also I see the left side still doesn't sit as flush as the right side and I think I'm going to be in the same boat as the previous poster and it's just a matter of time before it happens again. Very disappointed in hp on this.

Hello! I have an out of warranty Pavilion g6-2342dx notebook that also has a broken left hinge. 2 days ago the display quit working. The system boots up normally, but no display.I attached an HP s2031 monitor via the secondary monitor output cable and the note book seems to be working as it should. As it is the left hinge which is broken, could the display power connection have come loose/undone? I don't really want to tear into it without some prior advice...   The warranty expired 3 May 2014, but I have noticed many other people have experienced a problem with this hinge. Is there some way that HP can "help out" and perhaps "extend" the warranty for this issue?  Any advice or tips you can give will be greatly appreciated! Thank you,Larry

I bought my laptop on February 8th, 2015 from Best Buy Online and have bought this exact same computer before. With my first Pavilion g7, it would overheat a lot when I played games like Sims or even Minecraft. I would always have it somewhat off of the lapdesk I use so the fan could work and I made sure that It wasn't blocked off. The fan was still so loud that I'd have to mute my microphone because all of my friends on skype could hear my fan. Slowly but surely I noticed my hinge was pulling apart the plastic casing. One day my dog jumped down from the couch and tripped on the charger that my laptop was plugged into. He pretty much took my laptop with him to the floor (he's not a big dog but the cord was connected so it fell with it,) and my carefulness with the hinge and overheating was worthless when I ran to go see if it was broken and it surely was. It dropped a foot off of my couch, it was closed,  the first time it ever fell it was doomed. The hinge popped up the casing to where it disconnected the power button from the cords inside.  Anyways, after I took that one to BestBuy and they told me to buy a new one because it was going to cost just as much to replace the casing, that's what I did. I bought the same exact laptop because I loved how big the screen was and I liked the shiny looks of it. My first impression when first opening both of them when new was that it felt like the plastic was cheap and a little wobbly from what It looked like online.&nbs... Read more

For two years, I had been a proud user of my big screen laptop until the day I opened the lid and the plastic behind the left hinge crumbled like a cookie. I was totally shocked. I hadn't hit my laptop against anything nor had I dropped it, why, I hadn't even carried it around like most people do. The bloody hinge broke just like that. I was in for more shock and disappointment when the screen casing came apart when I tried to close the lid. Before I knew it, the damage had been done. I realized that I could not use my laptop like I normally do anymore. Since then, I have left the lid open always lest it break the screen completely. On the Forum, I learned that this is a design issue and many more users have suffered broken hinges and casings. If that's the case, why is HP not recalling faulty models? I have been an ardent fan of HP for twenty years. (Talking of fans, ever since the hinge broke and the casing came apart, I have been getting error messages about the cooling fan not functioning properly, that I need to shut down my PC). My first computer was a HP Pavilion desktop and so was my first printer. A few years ago, I even designed a logo for HP Shadow Labs, but it was not selected as a prospective design. That's another story. Now, how am I going to take my laptop to the city which is 100 miles away when I cannot safely close the lid even? I am out of warranty, so I will have to pay for replacements and service. Why should I pay for something... Read more

Hello,  I purchased the HP Envy Touch Smart Laptop about a year or so ago for myself considering I was just starting college. Unfortunately, the left hinge has been giving me various problems lately.  My laptop is working well and I have no other issues other than this and I have never dropped it before.  As I mentioned previously, I consistenly use my laptop for school and I am going to need it for a few more years since this is a fairly recent purchase. Lately, I have been very hesistant to close the screen down as I feel that every time I open it - it could get much worse and break off.  Please advise as to how this can be repaired or replaced before college starts back up. Thank you very much!

My wife has been battling using her M7 Envy since the left hinge went bad. Long story short we went out yesterday and got her and New Envy 360. She will open up work on 1 to 3 PCs/Laptops by the way. With the additon of the 360, she can keep up to speed while I look into fixing it now....I have already noticed that the M6 users have been able to get them fixed. I need to see what can be done to fix the hinge.(Hoping for a moderator to hop in at this point and guide this old whitebox OEM on);-)Thanks in advance!

I purchased an Aspire V5-571 laptop in June 2013. The left side hinge has started to come loose, pulling the bottom half of the laptop away from the top half. As a result of this, the loose hinge has cracked the screen and the touch screen now no longer works. No damage has been done to the laptop, it has just been subject to normal use. Is this a common problem with the V5? Is it something that can be easily repaired? Happy to provide any more details if required.

Broken hinge left hinge and bottom case is popping off. We're can I get this fixed? Disappointed hp customer. Bought this at Best Buy and got the extended warranty. Of course that expired 3 weeks ago and my hinge just broke. I have only moved this computer from my desk a handful of times. For $1000 dollars I thought I was getting something that would last. This is my first laptop. Do they all have hinge problems? Is it worth fixing? Should I take this back to bestbuy for repair?

Hello,  I too have had the hinge on my Envy suddenly crack open. No falls, drops, or damage. Everything works fine except for this hinge that just bulged out. What worries me is that this seems to be a popular problem, yet no recall has been made to fix it that I am aware of, and now that my Envy is more than a year old. I will be have to pay for a repair that seems to be somehow common. I would LOVE to hear that HP is standing behind their product and making things right with their customers??? One of the hinge that allows the laptop rotate 360 degrees is no longer working property.  The bottom half of the hinge that connects to the keyboard side is no longer rotating property. I suspect there is not enough lube or the thread is borken.  Since the hinge is not rotating correctly, there is a difference in spacing between the screen and keyboard half of the laptop, causing the two of sometimes grind against one another.  I have to physically try to rotate the angle of the bottom half of the hinge to match the working side, but this is not an easy task which shouldn?t be a problem in the first place.  Now I love the Specte X360 when it is working and was planning buying one for my fiancÚ (trying to convert her over to PC from MAC), but this is seriously giving me second thoughts on the quality of HP Spectre 360.   My question is does the hinge needs occasional lubing for it to work properly?  Has there been testing (qualification) on these hinges?  If so, how many cycles?  Is there a video or manual on how to disassemble the hinge?  I am an engineer and do failure analysis for a living, so I am somewhat interested the failure mode.  Plus, this was a very expensive computer and I would rather not have to spend more money if I am able to fix this myself.  Anyways, I don't know if it's my bad luck or HP is very 'good' with its warranty...  Usage Info:Laptop is ... A hinge of my Acer S7 191 broke. I showed it to a few local repair shops and they said the whole display unit will have to be replaced. It will be an extremely expensive repair, not least because I imported the laptop and there are no easily available replacement parts for it in Brazil, but I can order parts from the UK and have a friend bring it to me next month. What piece do I have to buy? The whole display unit, or is there a cheaper alternative? Also, can the hinge be repaired by soldering or gluing it? (I don't care if it looks ugly, as long as it works and doesn't cost a kidney)

Apparently this is a common issue/design flaw, but the hinge on my laptop is badly broken. I took it to a PC repair place and they said that I could either buy a new one or replace the whole screen. The problem is, the laptop's warranty ran out 6 months ago. It broke over a month ago with regular usage and it's just incredible that there wasn't some kind of recall notice on such a blatant design flaw.  Is there anything I can do to get this fixed without shelling out hundreds of dollars? I can't accept that this is just one of those "sit back and take it" things, otherwise there would be a huge amount of lawsuits.

The left hinge and case on my laptop are not working properly.  The screw on the case seems stripped.  The case pries open when the laptop is opened creating a gap over 1/4".  There is an existing forum with many reports of the same issue on different models of laptops.  Has this been recalled or can I simply purchase the bottom piece of the case and replace it on my own?  My machine is 2 yrs old and not under warranty.  I am concerned that the hinge might break or that the screen or other components may have issues if this is not fixed soon.  The machine has never been dropped or bumped.

I use HP exclusively since I swore I would never purchase another Dell product.  I have either purchased or other's have purchased at my recommendation at least 11 PC's and printers.  However, I am very disappointed with this machine.  The hinges are so tight they broke the case where they mount.  I fear that is I replace the broken part, it will quickly break due to the hindes.  I see this is not an isolated issue and hope that HP will see this is a design flaw and make this right.

Left hinge issue - the very same I have been reading about in this blog. I purchased my beloved laptop in August of 2013, it is NOT a refurbished item ; it is the Beats Audio version. This is the second time this has happened to my laptop, the first time was about 1.5 years ago. An excellent service technician at Future Shop was able to take the back off to find the tiny screw that had worked its way out, there wasn't even a charge for the service. I miss this technician, she was the best one I have ever dealt with. Before this issue my warranty was coming up so I took it in for a tune up. I mentioned I was having issues with the sound; I thought it was a software issue, it wasn't. They ended up sending it back to HP, the motherboard was replaced. Now the left hinge is gone again, this time I am told that HP doesn't have replacement parts as now small pieces have broken off inside. My option is to have it glued with no guarantee.I NEED my laptop. I can't afford a new one as I graduated from college a few months ago with no job yet. What are my options; can I have another one built from the good parts?

Sorry if this isn't a Windows 7 OS/Program issue, but this is kinda disturbing me,

So I was making my bed about 2 weeks ago, and I take my laptop and put it on my chair. When I was done with that I lightly toss my laptop onto my bed (like 2 inches above my bed), and when it lands I hear a loud CRACK. I pick up my laptop and look at it to see if its broken from somewhere, and I saw nothing wrong, so I continued using it. Later when I actually put it on my lap, the screen falls back, which it never ever does. I try putting it back to the way it was before and it didnt stay like it would. Kept falling back. I check both sides of the laptop and I see that one of the hinges was misplaced/broken, and the cover pieces next to the hinge were separated. I try putting them back together, but whenever I place the monitor back or move it back the cover pieces don't say together.

So uh, I can give pictures tomorrow if needed, but for now can anyone give me some solution to fix this?

Regards,
-Nide

Open and Administrative command prompt, type in "magic-powder-fixaroo" will instantly fix any physical problem with the hardware!

On a more serious note. You'll most likely need a replacement either the full screen assembly of just of the hing itself.

My HP Envy's hinge is detaching as the casing is cracking open. I have never dropped it or damaged it any manner. Everything else works perfectly. I have barely had my computer over a year now which is not a long time and this seems to be a very popular problem. I will have to pay to get this fixed due to a manufacturing problem and being a college student that is definitely not in my budget especially with the precaution I take with this laptop. My HP Envy 17 recently started popping the back left hinge cover. The hinge is broken off of the PLASTIC piece it screws in to and a bunch of small plastic pieces came out of the cover. This laptop has been extremely taken care of there's no reason for it to break other than a faulty design. Ofcourse this had to happen right after my warranty ran out.  I'm very dissapointed as this is an expensive laptop that shouldn't have these design flaws!

Sadly, I've also joined the ranks of the HP broken hinge crowd. I purchased a refurbished HP ENVY Sleekbook 6-1014nr. At that time I had litttle hesitation with the purchase due to what I thought was a great reputation for HP laptops. This laptop was handled with care and with pride. It was a great little machine, puchased to support my school classes. Of course a while after the 90 day warranty was up the first hinge popped loose. Handling the laptop thereafter with kids gloves unfortunately didnt prevent the remaining hinge from seperating as well. Some internet research quickly revealed that this is a widespread HP design defect and is very common in HP laptops. Shame on me for doing my due diligence prior to my purchase. The laptop now functions solely as a desktop with the screen propped up against the wall. It is far too fragile to consider even closing the screen and using it in the intended manner. I do think the machine is a great little laptop aside from this major design issue and with school now back in session I'm open to suggestions. Any recommendations on a cheap and effective repair?

Hello. I have owned my HP ENVY m6 laptop for over 2 years now so obviously my warranty has expired. About 2 months ago or so, I noticed that the right hinge on my laptop was raised so I inspected it and then pushed it down. This has continued every time I close the laptop with me pushing down the hinge. The plastic covering for the monitor also bends every time I close the laptop. These issues seemed to be fairly minor at the time. Tonight, on 9/12/15, when i went to close the laptop, the hinge completely gave way, broke off, and collapsed. The left side seems to still be intact. I have noticed that on the inside of the bottom right corner of the monitor, a metal piece has been separated from the other side of the monitor. I suspect that this metal piece is what has more or less held the hinge in place for the 2+ months that it has been broken. In other words, when the metal piece gave way, so too did the already broken hinge. The HP ENVY m6 laptop still seems to be in working order other than the broken hinge. Though this means that I cannot bring it anywhere at present. The ability to transport my laptop is very important to me as I am currently in college and I take much of my notes on my laptop I was wondering if there is anyway to have technical support on my laptop? My laptop has a broken hinge, otherwise it works great. It is out of warranty. I had contacted HP earlier in the year and they were gracious to offer to fix it free  of cost. However, I was unable to ship the machine right away due to personal reasons, and now the free repair offer has been retracted. Would appreciate any help. Best,Ravi

Hello, I have an almost two year old Envy 17, and the left hinge has recently broken.  A local repairman told me the entire bottom part of the laptop would have to be replaced, but I thought that perhaps HP had a simpler and less expensive solution.  I've always had good experience using HP products.

I know it's a shot in the dark, but I'm hoping someone can offer me some help. I've had my HP Envy for about 2 years and I've always been very careful with it, but last year one the hinges started to pop out. I was still under warranty and was able to have it fixed for free and everything was great. Now, just over a year later, the same hinge has broken again. I don't have the money to fix it and it's at the point where I can't open the laptop because the hinge caused the bottom of the computer to separate. This seems to be a really common problem with the HP Envy and it seems like HP should have some way to fix this (for less than the $350 I was quoted at my local store). Anybody?

I purchased my HP Envy laptop on October 3, 2012. On  August 19, 2013, the right hinge broke and luckily it was still under warranty.. I took it back to Staples and they sent it to HP for a product repair. My CSO Order Number was [Personal Information Removed] with a Serial Number of [Personal Information Removed]. According to the receipt, it states that the Bezel and Back Cover were replaced.
This right hinge is broken again, and the right side back cover has separated from the front. I found a small piece of black plastic, so it has broken somewhere. It has affected the icons at the bottom right as I can't left click on them to open the icons anymore. I can, however, right click and choose an option. I have taped the back to the front because I am afraid that the screen will be damaged. I don't even take my laptop anywhere..It stays on a side table open at all times.. I love this computer and an very frustrated that this has happened again.. I have other HP equipment and computers, and have never had a problem with them..
I suppose I can leave the  tape on it and never close it again, but I can't even take it on vacation now..
I will not pay to have it repaired..I will continue to use it as is and hope for the best. I will, however, not purchase another HP product in the future..
I feel that all of the other people with this problem should be given new laptops.. obviously the repair doesn't work.

I  just came across this topic. My HP Envy m6-1184ca, purchased November 7, 2012, also has a broken hinge. It broke in normal use a couple of months after the warranty expired. I was quoted $300 for the repair, roughly 50% of the purchase price. With no relief forthcoming I declined the repair and have been using it by propping the screen against several books. I look to HP to repair to computer at minimum or no cost to me.

I have an issues with my hinges. But not only that, I also have a bright spot on my screen, issues with the bottom cracking (caused by the hinge crack), and finally some of the plastic fins are missing where the heat exhaust is . ans some trouble with wifi adapter ( Ralink RT3290 ) , My problem is that my warranty has already expired and I cannot afford costly repairs. This is my primary computer too. Knowing that I couldn't afford costly repairs, I have tried to do temporary fixes to it myself, but they aren't going to hold forever.I need help plesae , this laprop cost me 847 $ .

Hi, I'm having the broken hinge problem, the right hinge cracked out. The warranty is out... However I would like to have the plastic bezel part, if it's still possible, for the screen so I could replace it. The screen (LCD) is still intact but the bezel is falling apart... Thank You,Yaroslav
