I have an HP Pavilion Laptop that is about 2 years old. I usually keep it in Hibernate mode but last night I shut it down totally and this morning woke up and the Caps lock and Num lock keys are blinking. Any clues as to what the problem is? All led lights on top are lit. Screen does not come up at all. I am going to try the hard reset to see if that is the problem. Any ideas would help.

A:Hp Pavilion Blinking Caps Lock and Num Lock keys

Hi, Welcome to TSG forums!
You might try booting it into safe mode....while computer is booting, continously tap the F8 key. This should open it in safe mode. If it does, use the arrow keys to move up to 'last known good configuration' click on enter, let the machine do its thing.

Hi @SwaggerPony, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums!  I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion x360 Convertible  and the auto rotate not working correctly. I would make sure all updates have been done on the Notebook first. Restart the Notebook. Here is a link to show you how to configure and disable the screen rotation feature.  In the Device Manager, click the arrow next to Display Adapters. Right-click on Graphics and select Uninstall Driver Software if more than 1 Graphics adapter do 1 at a time. Then restart the Notebook. The Notebook should find and automatically install the updated driver. Please get back to me how this goes. Please click the Thumbs up below to thank me for my efforts!  Thanks

I have an issue with NUM LOCK being off when I boot up my laptop.

I have tried a number of solutions to no avail.

Namely

1. Changing the regedit as described in previous posts here. The value in the INITIAL_KEYBOARD_INDICATORS is 2 and no matter what value I change it to it defaults back to 2 when I reboot. (I realise the value should be 2 for NUM LOCK to be on when booting)

2. Trying to change the BIOS setting when I boot up the laptop. However I believe HP give a very limited BIOS from which users can change settings. For example there is no NUM LOCK setting for me to toggle.

3. I have tried disabling the fast boot option.

I have now run out of ideas and patience. Does anyone have any other suggestions please?

Many thanks

My daughter has an HP Pavilion DV6, that I have fixed the symptoms of a problem but would like to get to the bottom of the cause. The problem was that it wouldn't start, when you switch on you can hear the fan, the led on the caps lock bilnks continuously, and the led on the wifi key is orange. (It is normally white when working properly.

Having trawled numerous forums including HP I could not find a resolution, many suggestions such as reset the power, clean the memory and slots etc etc, followed by loads of entries from people trying all of these without succes

I eventually came across a post that said he had fixed it by simply wrapping the laptop in a blanket, switching on, leaving for 20 minutes then switching off and on again. This post was followed by dozens of people saying this worked for them.
So, rather sceptically, I tried it and amazingly it worked. The laptop now starts every time without a problem. So aparantly problem solved.

However I would like to get to the bottom of this before it happens again. I want to find the actual reason for the failure and if necessary replace any faulty componants. I am thinking of selling the laptop but don't want to sell it to someone knowing it may fail in the near future.

My guess is that this must be heat related as wrapping in a blanket stopped the laptop cooling and it was very hot when I removed the blanket.
The laptop now starts OK regardless of the temp, I left it overnight and restarted OK.

Hi,

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

Can you toggle those functions off, one at a time? Sometimes restarting the computer will use the last state it was in, I'd fully shut down and pull the power cord from the computer and the keyboard cable then put them back and try again.

I have heard of sites where such things can be downloaded but again NOT a techie, so I hesitate to go outside of Windows/Microsoft for downloads.  I do not know what download sites are safe or spoofs.

Please plain English ... i.e. go to settings etc.  Or just give me a Microsoft approved site for download.

I went to get my HP dv4 Pavilion laptop after work tonight to check email and i opened it up and moved around the mouse to wake it up...the lights on they keyboard all came on as if it were starting but the screen stayed black. I waited a few minutes because sometimes it's been known to take a few seconds to actually kick on...but nothing happened so I forced shutdown by holding the power button. Turned it back on and the screen came on(with a "your system didn't shut down properly error screen) but it still started, but now the Caps Lock and Scroll keys had blinking lights on the side and top, blinking together about every second. I tried tapping the buttons and nothing happened. What caused this and how can i get rid of the blinking. I've read from doing a google search that shutting down, taking the battery out and unplugging from the A/C adapter and holding the power button for 15 seconds takes care of the problem...but I would like to make sure that is safe before trying as this is a fairly new laptop(just got it at Christmas time). I'm running Windows 7 if that makes a difference. would also like to add that I just noticed that my little batter icon says it is plugged in but not charging....it's sitting at 80%....this is a brand new ac adapter that I just got last week...so I hope it's not that.Thank you for any help you can give me....and sorry if this isn't the right forum....it seemed to be the best fit.

When you choose lock the taskbar, it does stop you from resizing sections of it but it doesn't stop you from doing other things, like re-arranging icons in the quicklaunch folder.

Is there any way I can lock the icon layout in quicklaunch? Sometimes I might accidentally drop something in there when I meant to be dragging it to do an "open with", or I might accidentally click as I'm moving my mouse over the icons and it drags an icon to a different position and I have to figure out where to drag it back to, and in the most bizarre Windows feature ever ... if I then shutdown and startup, despite having moved that icon back to it's original position, after startup it'll be back to the wrong position (that it only spent 3 seconds being in by mistake).

Currently I just have a screenshot of my icons and have to use that as reference to keep them in the places I want them. Example ( imgur.com/UjltgAh ):

Ok I've been suffering this issue with Windows 10 for as long as I can remember, and it's stopping me using it as the primary OS.

In short I have two, intermittent issues which nothing I do seems to resolve.

1: After waking up from sleep and typing my username password and hitting return, the screen goes black. Cursor moves, Windows + P operates (Screen options do appear from the right) but doesn't actually make any difference, and I'm stuck having to hard reset because ctrl alt del doesn't work either. This isn't an every time issue, hence googling seems to fail miserably because all the examples are people getting it every time. This, for me, is a 3 in 10 regularity.

2: Logging a user off occasionally sees the lock screen ... locking up. Ironically. Mouse moves, and power button DOES work but that's all that works.

These issues are plaguing me and I just cannot fix them - endless googling has left me empty handed, and I've tried disabling SLI. No help. I've tried disabling apps. No help. Nothing I do makes any difference and event viewer doesn't seem to reveal anything useful either.

Anyone got any idea how I can resolve this?

Hello All,
I am talking about an encryption software that can lock folders and files on windows XP. The version is Folder Lock 6.1.7.

I want to know if it is possible to lock files currently being downloaded from my browser (i.e. Can my browser access the files and add parts to them and at the same time, can the files be protected?)

Thank you

A:Folder Lock 6.1.7 - trying to lock downloading files

You might be able to find a browser add-on, but I personally haven't heard of anything you can use. You need the files on the computer before you can encrypt them.

Before you decide to use a program like Folder Lock, I would suggest you search this site for "folder lock" threads and read about all the people who have lost files with that program.

Hello! Recently, I turned on the on screen indicators for caps and num lock by accident when trying to get the pop-up window to stop opening every time I hit one of the buttons. Now I don't know how to disable it, and it's a pain while playing games. Solutions tried:Going to preference, there is no "On-Screen Display Tab"Going to run the regedit. Any help would be appreciated!

I need help. I will explain when I believe the problem began. I Had windows xp running with 3 harddrives and a Cdrom drive. My CdRom drive began to give me problems, so I was going to swap it with one from one of my other computers. At the same time I wanted to change the way I had all my drives connected. I had originally had the 80 gig drive as a Primary Master, with a smaller drive acting as the Slave. I also had the Cdrom as Master Secondary drive and a smaller drive attached as the Slave. Now everthing was running fine, exept that my cdrom drive would read the discs only if it would start up with the disk in the drive. If I tried to change it, windows would ask me to place a disk in the F: drive, when there already was one. I thought to replace the CdRom drive with another working device. while at the same time I decided to change up my Connections. I took the "new" cd rom drive and made it Slave Primary to the Master 80 Gig drive. then I took the two smaller drives and put them together as sencondary devices. when I tried to turn on the computer all that happens is, as soon as I touch the power my 3 lights on my keyboard come on. Num Lock Caps Lock and Scroll Lock. I know the drive is turning on because I can feel & here it wirr. I tried taking everything off except for the 80 gig drive and I still got the same problem. Later on I noticed that there are a bunch of smaller connections that come from the front of my computer power, sleep, and reset buttons. ... Read more

Hi! So, I've upgraded to Windows 8 RTM this weekend and I'm having this problem: Every time I boot the PC (shutdown or restart), the Num Lock key is off. Since my password uses numbers, and I'm pretty used to type it with Num Lock, I'd like to keep it always on. It was fine on Windows 7. Now, I've searched for it, and there is the "InitialKeyboardIndicators" key on regedit. I have changed values for all of them to "2", and it didn't work. My BIOS say to keep it always on. Is there anything else that I'm missing?

A:Num Lock always activated on lock screen

Netplwiz, or tap num lock before starting password entry.

Besides those, you can check to make sure keyboard is plugged in directly to motherboard instead of add-on card or something.

When I hit the power on button on my computer, it takes anywhere from five minutes to eight hours to start up. While starting up, and while running, the CAPS lock and NUM lock lights flash once about every 2.75 seconds.

I looked up the HP error codes, one flash is supposed to signify a CPU problem...but I can run Half-life 2, WoW, Runes of Magic, and 8 track Guitar Pro 5 files just fine. So I figure my CPU's (AMD Turion x2 dual core @ 2.0 Ghz) got nothing wrong with it.

I've spoken to HP support, they told me to reimage my computer to factory settings...I've done that, twice....flashed the BIOS...and tried running startup repair....any hints?

I am using Folder Lock 5.8.0 and am TRYING to Password protect my files/documents on a CD.

I am using Windows 7. I have managed to get Folder Lock onto the disk, and password protected the locker ~I thought.

I made the disk on my main desktop .... took the disk to my laptop, which also runs Windows 7, and everything seemed to work fine.

Next I took the disk to an older desktop that I have with Windows XP on it. I thought it was fine at first ... but after playing around a bit, I changed the properties of the folder to "show hidden items".

With that option ~ you can "see" the locker BEFORE you have to put the password in and it will open for the documents/files to be seen!

What am I doing wrong??? Anyone with the least bit of computer knowledge could view my files if they got their hands on the CD!

Is there a "better" way to accomplish what I am trying to do?

Thank you
kelly

Caps lock and Num lock reversed

On my new Gateway ML6720, the caps lock and num lock are OFF, but my caps lock and num lock lights are on. And vice versa. I don't remember it being that way this morning when I first turned it on.

Why are the lights reversed from what I expected?

Thanks.

A:will a HP Pavilion 15-n034sa motherboard fit into a HP Pavilion 15-n083sa ?

Actually that's a hard question, generally its not possible to install another motherboard, sometimes it is. In this case one is an AMD platform and the other is an Intel platform, there could be tons of differences in mounting holes, physical design, clearance, connectors, heat dissipation requirements, cooling systems, etc. Laptops are not like desktops that use more standardized designs.

Is there a registry key/local poicy/other solution so that only I can unlock my account when I lock it?

Both computers are Core i3-4130, have 1 TB 7200 SATA 6G 3.5 HDs, same OS (Windows 7 Pro 64). My question is:  can I swap them out, or do I need to get an external HD enclosure and copy the 205t to the 490? This time i had my icons roll up and some of the programs would start to load up but once loaded i cant click on anything as if it freezes but i can still move the mouse around and cntrl alt delete still wont work. So ive gone into safe mode and ran a virus scan and did a memory test and all came out fine. Can someone lead me into the right direction with what might be causing this

Welcome
If, as you said, you made a full scan with your anti virus
Downloand and make a full and updated scan with malwarebytes. Report back

Here are my solutions to freezing, and an excellent article, which I hope is of some help
Go to search type device manager and look for any yellow warning markers
Download and run malwarebytes, a full scan after you update
Run antivirus scan
Check memory with memtest86
Make sure that you are not over heating.
Try in safe mode; report back if it works properly.
Try a clean boot
Make sure PSU is working properly
If overclocking, restore to original
Test hard drive at company website.
Test in safe mode, does it still happen?
Try with clean boot..

Hi everyone.

Appreciate any help.

A:Num Lock

The NumLock key may be stuck or there may be dirt in the contact area.

If you have another keyboard try that and see if the problem is resolved. If that fixes the problem then try cleaning the "faulty" keyboard. DON'T blow on the keyboard because you will induce water vapour into the mechanism. Use something like a bicycle pump to clean out the dirt.

If another keyboard does not fix the problem get back to the Forum.

Alright, what has been happening for the last few months, is when I played games like World of Warcraft for a long period of time, my 3dcard would flip out and my screen would turn into like.... green snow (like what you see on the tv except its black and white) and it has a distinct pattern to it, and it continously moves. After this happened enough times I reached down and felt my 3dcard, it was VERY hott, it obviously overheated. I decided to buy an external fan and place on the outside, with the side panel off so it can blow into it.. on High.... its a very high powered fan. My 3dcard now dose not have problems like it did before... Now when I play games my whole pc will lock up.

I ran a memtest86(name is probably incorect), and my ram seemed fine, passed everything...

Please help me solve my problem.

At completely random intervals(e.g. 2 minutes, 3 hours, sometime during the day/night), the computer 'locks me out' - the screen remains visible but the mouse is 'frozen', the keyboard will not function, any discs in their slots will not release. The system will restart with no apparent problem until the next lock out.
I've had a systems check done at the local shop and they are fairly certain that the hardware is not causing the problem.
Is this a known/common occurrence? Help please!!

Hi all
as I play a lot of games especially counter strike source I recently upgraded my pc.

I bought an Athlon 3700 64, an Asus A8n-sli mobo and a GT 7800 Graphics card, with 64 bit Xp. Everything was fine then I had to reinstall windows as I wanted to partiton the drive and partition magic would not appear to work. (It was no big deal really)

Since then whenever I try to play a game my pc locks up solid within minutes, whatever game it is. It was fine before the reinstall, now the only thing I have done different to my knowledge is used the drivers off the disk for the card where as I downloaded them off the nvidia website the first time. But im not sure if this would make a difference.

The card is cool and the system cpu is running at around 40-42 degrees (when I was able to play a game) I have not messed with any Overclocking nonsense, so should I maybe uninstall the drivers and try them off nvida site if anyone fels that would be a big deal?

Cheers

Gus

Recently my DVD burner has suddenly stopped playing DVDs. The drive can read CDs and blank DVDs with no problem but if I instert any DVD that has any data on it, whether it be home burnt or manufactured, my system will lock up. I can't ctrl+alt+del or alt+f4 or anything. The only way to restore my system functionality is a hard reboot. It's also worth noting that if I leave the DVD in the drive when I turn the system back on it will lock up and freeze while loading Windows. Take it out and it boots fine.

I've tried everything I can think of without any luck. I've reinstalled the IDE controller and channels, I've tried replacing the IDE cable, I've updated the bios to the latest available, I've tried reinstalling the driver from my Windows cd. I'm pretty sure it's not a physical problem with the drive because I took it out and put it into one of my other computers and it worked fine. I have a windows 2000 that is locking up on me. I have tried scanning for spyware (a few cookies but that is all) and viruses. While the spywre scans complete, I cannot get any virus scan to go past c:\I386\dmime.dl_ I have tried AVG, Stinger (even in safe mode), Trend online and Panda Active scan.
None will go past that file. The computer appears to lock up, but if the scan is allowed to continue until the computer gives a message that the scan has stopped responding, then things pick back up. I have a new Old computer, HP Vectra VLi8 When I boot the PC, I go through a login screen, But before it reaches the desktop, I get a grey popup that says, the serial key is invalid, It wants to validate the windows key, (but its invalid), I can change the key, but it tells me that a known valid key, is not valid, There is no Internet connection as the drivers are not working for the network card, ( Card works in other computer). I can access Safe mode, I can not access safemode with networking?.. I have a original Windows XP CD, With a valid code, However it will not allow me to Format and Install Windows. It makes it just past the raid driver part, and then some .sys file is missing error. Press any key to restart. when in safe mode I see a lot of different partitions, But there is one 30 gig hard drive and one 13 gig hard drive.. Also the board has the processor and ram, then a second board is plugged in with the IDE 1 going to the hard drives, and IDE2 going to the CD Roms.

So I want a working PC,to do this:
I need to turn off the stupid WGA, at boot. (It seems like someone was using a unvalid key, and the 30 days expired..) Unknown though.
Or Reformat the Hard drives and install new,, ( Could this be a raid issue? ).

Any Ideas?? Didnt Microsoft lock a few invalid keys back in the day? but later unlocked them? could this be one of those??

As you can see by my name, I think the crypt got my docs, poor guy, there's really not much there, but NOW I'll have to got to my hard copy and retype, thankfully I can type 50 wpm.  Any who, my question, how can I avoid this in the future?  Don't want to type and save/and U know what.  I'm not very knowledgeable about computers.  If you can give me some good advice, it's greatly appreciated, just don't use too many fancy words )

All my files are orangish, and when I click, it says I need to purchase the Word Office program from Microsoft, is it possible that is all it is?

Trying to put my picture up, too large, any recommendations, I know this is basic, I do appreciate any help another offers.

A:Doc/Lock

If this is a new computer it is entirely possible that you have been running a trial version of MS Office and the trial period has come to an end. Which means that, if you want to continue using Office, yes, you are going to have to buy a copy, or at least a license (you already have the copy !)

There are several alternatives open to you, other than going out and paying MS the full whack. For example, if you can describe yourself as some sort of student you can buy it at a very substantial discount; you may be able to get a legal copy through your work, also at a discount; and there are one or two other ways of getting MS Office legally at less than the MS headline price.

As an alternative, you could consider installing either Open or Libre Office. These are two freely downloadable office suites. While they have their own file formats, they are both capable of reading the MS file formats such as .DOCX and producing documents in MS compatible formats. They are worth a look.

Q: lock up

I'm new here and I've already got a lot of help from searching and reading the posts on here. I ran spybot and cleaned the junk out and that greatly improved performance. The computer still locks up at random. It locks the screen and the key board and I have to use the button to re-start. My hijack this file is below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX270. While at the log in screen, the keyboard and mouse intermittently work. If I plug in a wired keyboard and mouse, they don't work at all. When I put my credentials in, and log in, it will freeze at different spots. Sometimes with the mouse in the middle and a blank screen, sometimes when it says "loading personal settings."

I can get into Safe Mode, but can't run Windows Update or do much else to fix the problem.

Advice?

A:Lock up during Log In

You are posting in the XP forum, but your profile says Windows 7, which is it? Your user name profile may be corrupted. Go to Control Panel/Users and create a new user with admin rights. Log out of the user you are in and log in as the new user. If that works better, then copy your personal files in your olde user profile file to the new user profile and use that login.

Q: Lock-up

I have a Sony Viao with Windows Home Edition XP. I installed a Palm CD to set-up a new Palm Zire PDA. After doing that a screen appeared saying that the computer was locked up and requested a user name & password or administrator log in and password. I cannot type anything onto the screen. I have tried to start up in safe mode but I cannot get there. Please advise of anything that anybody can do to help me. Thanks!

I have Windows 7 on my computer. Can anyone tell me the purpose of the "num lock" key on the keyboard? When should I turn it off and when should I turn it on? Thank you very much. Murrar

A:num lock

The Num Lock key exists because earlier 84-key keyboards did not have arrows separate from the numeric keypad. Num Lock would be used to choose between the two functions. On some laptop computers, Num Lock keys are used to convert part of the main keyboard to act as a (slightly skewed) numeric keypad rather than letters. Since most modern desktop computers have a full-size keyboard with both a numpad and separate arrow keys, Num Lock is rarely used for its original purpose, and ends up confusing the user if the computer has for some reason activated or deactivated the Num Lock key without the user being aware of it. This is less of an issue on most laptop computers, since activating the Num Lock function typically requires use of the Fn Key; however, if a full-size keyboard is plugged into a laptop keyboard, then the Num Lock function is normally off, and the user would have to activate the Num Lock function to use the numeric keypad for numeric entry.Keys affected by NumLock; You can disable it from the keyboard, but if it's enabled in the BIOS, it will be back on at next start/reboot.Hope this answers your question.
