How to Disable Touchpad on ProBook 6460b

Q: How to Disable Touchpad on ProBook 6460b

How do I disable the touchpad on my ProBook 6460b? I do a lot of wordprocessing, and having the cursor relocate whever I accidentally brush the touchpad is near crippling. I've googled, and checked through the forums here and elsewhere, and none of the recommendations I've found seem to apply. -there is no little white spot/button at the upper left corner to double tap. -When I go to Control Panel>Mouse, the touchpad is listed as "PS-2 compatible mouse" and there is no option I can find to disable it. Under Device Manager, I have the option to Uninstall the driver, but not to disable it. Also, somebody tell the HP hardware designers that having an easily identifiable switch, a hardware one preferably, to disable the touchpad is a HUUUUUUUGE plus. The lack of such presents a clear danger of making me never buy HP again.

I bought this probook used, it turns on & runs okay on the AC charger/adapter, but will not turn on or run on just the battery alone. . The battery says it is charging ok and  is now 100% charged , it still will not turn on without the adapter. Is this a laptop problem or could it be a bad battery?

Is it possible to update the video BIOS separately, and how to do that? Yet I'm not sure if the VBIOS is worth updating. Any help? Thanks.

Well, best case the AC adapter is not putting out enough juice and worst case the motherboard has failed. Can you maybe have the power output of the AC adapter tested or try another adapter?

I very recently picked up a refurbished HP ProBook 6460B off Amazon to take care of a single harware driver Win 10 compatibility issue. It arrived and forced me to provide a user password, so reluctantly I did, giving something unique, and the reminder of ATV UP. As I did it I was think that was a dodgy reminder. The notebook solved my driver issue immediately and I was able to perform the equipment calibration that was needed. So I closed it and put it away. A week later I went to fire up the notebook again and drew a total blank on the password and now All Terrain Vehicle is stuck in my head, which makes no sense at all. Is there a way to boot into HP's UEFI to bypass my USER ID password issue and just start over? There's no data to lose on that unit so a clean reset to Win 7 Pro would be great. Maybe I'll even write the password down this time.

A:Win 7 Pro Lost Password on HP ProBook 6460B

Depends on whether the laptop has a Recovery partiton. If it does tapping away at F11 key immediately after powering on should boot into recovery to do a Factory reset. If no recovery partition you could call HP to order an installation disk for a small fee. Of the list here I have used the first two with success:http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/passrecovery.htm

I trying to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and the upgrade always gets stuck at a Windows 10 dialog box that says DigitalPersona Pro needs to be manually uninstalled (there are two instances of this message). This appears associated with the HP ProtectTools that was originally installed on this machine. However, I cannot find either one of these programs in the list of programs that can be deinstalled in Control Panel. I do see HP ProtectTools in the programs menu, but when I run it, it is "loading applications" and never finishes that. I've tried downloading HP ProtectTools from the HP support side, for my model laptop and re-installing (hoping that I can then de-install a repaired install), but at the end of the install the installer says that it is not supported on my machine. I just want to get DigitalPersona Pro off of my machine and finish the Windows 10 upgrade. I don't even care if the fingerprint reader even works. I've searched the web and found lot's or references to fix this, but so far nothing I've tried has worked. Help.

Hello, I am having some problems with my TouchPad on my notebook. Firstly, the TouchPad doesn't react at all sometimes. This usually happens when it's locked, then after unlocking it starts to work properly. Which is worse is that the "left" and "right" buttons often switch unexpectedly, i. e. the "left" button is suddenly working as a "right" button and vice versa. I bought my notebook three weeks ago so it's basically brand new and I wasn't really expecting to have trouble with it so early. I would appreciate any kind of help, thank you.

Hello zamsam,

I understand that your touchpad will freeze.

Do a hard reset.
Turn the computer off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.

This should reset the hardware in the computer.

As you power it back on tap the F2 key. This will load hardware diagnostics.
Run the startup test.

This will test all the hardware in the system and detect any problems.

If the entire test passes, turn off the computer.
As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.

When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.

I have an HP Probook 6550b, i5 processor, 8 gigs ram, running win7 64b. A couple mornings ago, while using the computer, the touchpad and mouse keys (two pair, one below the keyboard and one below the touchpad) stopped working. Checked the settings in Control Panel, TP is activated. I reinstalled a fresh driver from HP with no luck. BIOS is reporting "No mouse found" on boot. The mouse still moves with the controller nipple in the middle of the keyboard. USB mouse works fine. Last night, all of a sudden, the touchpad and buttons started working again. I understand on some laptops the TP can be disabled by function keystroke or tapping the upper left corner of the pad but that is not an option on this model, at least as far as the user manual states. Ny question: is turning off the touchpad something I did and, if it happens again, how do I turn it back on?

Meaning, during the booting time when i wish to change the booting option, at that time i am unable to use even my mouse. Which otherwise is the only outside device used via usb port. Earlier there was issue of BIOS application, which was corrupted, which not is visible when i just boot, meaning thereby, the button namely f1 or f8 is operation at the time of booting, but unable to do any change in the booting options which are visible when i just boot my laptop. Though with the help of USB i am able to work on my externally attached keyboard. What should be done to cure this issue this is persistently bothering me for last 15 days. I am unable to make my laptop's touchpad and keyboard operational. 1 thing more only Tab is operational and opening and closing bracket keys work that is it. I've just purchased an HP Probook 650 G1, intel i7-4600m, system BIOS 01.34-08/28/2015, keyboard revision KBC version 16.3C. The Escape key and the function keys F1 to F12 appear to be in Action Key Mode (eg Escape gives HP System Information, F6 allows change of audio levels, etc) - and I would prefer to retain the standard functions of those keys (for shortcuts in Word and Excel, also for Express Scribe transcribing software).  I have found that Ctrl + Fn + the relevant function key is a workaround to achieve some (but not all) the standard functions - but that is cumbersome when used frequently. The workaround doesn't seem to work for the Escape key. I have seen some advice on how to disable Action Keys Mode on some HP notebooks - eghttp://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c02035108- and I've used this method on previous HP notebooks (eg Pavilion G6), but it doesn't work for this Probook. The BIOS Setup screen on my new machine doesn't seem to show Action Key Mode (or even System Configuration) as options. I'd be grateful for suggestions.

I take it that you are referring to a laptop or a notebook. Check your user manual for details on how to enable/disable the touchpad. As you have not provided any details on your machine (manufacturer, model number), I cannot help you any further as the method used varies. If you reply with the necessary details, I should be able locate some instructions for you.

Incidentally, if you scroll to the very bottom of the page you wil find a section 'Similar Threads'. You might like to check these out to see if they are of any help.

....if a USB mouse is present?

My users have Dell Latitude D630s with Synaptics Touchpads. They run Windows 7 Pro x86, and I was wondering if there's a setting/option/app that will disable the touchpad if a USB mouse was connected to the system. Many moons ago, the touchpads would be disabled when a PS/2 mouse was connected, but I haven't come across that functionality with USB mice.

A:Disable Touchpad...

I'm assuming the option isn't being displayed under:

Control panel> Mouse > Device Settings tab > Check the "Disable internal pointing device when external USB device is attached"

It depends on what Synaptics driver software is installed for that option to appear though.

when I go back to the Device Manager it does not list the correct driver
number. This is after I do the required restart.

I have even uninstalled the driver which does no good.

Any suggestions.

Eureka! Thanks to Wonder_Woman on the HP Forum.
After all the downloading and uninstalling all it took was changing
a number in the registry. Sometimes the simplest soloution is the
best.

PLEASE can someone tell me in words of one syllable how to disable the touchpad on my Toshiba L450D without taking it apart and disconnecting it? I installed a wireless Microsoft mouse (superb) and now cannot get past the intellipoint mouse properties in order to disable the touchpad. The cursor flying all over place drives me NUTS. But what's the point of having a flexible portable laptop if I have to constantly take a wireless mouse everywhere? NO, FnF9 does not work either despite being labelled as being able to do so.

A:disable touchpad?

Hello Ian Rigby. Welcome to the Forum.

Normally that is quite easy:

Right-click on Synaptics Pointing Device icon on the Taskbar > pointing device properties > device settings tab > disable synaptics touchpad > apply > ok

If you do not have the Synaptics icon available then search for Synaptics from the Start search box.

Hello. Long time no see. My mom has a Gateway mx-3230 laptop that she only wants to use a mouse on. The computer has had a fresh install of XP SP3, and I'm unable to disable the touchpad so she will only have mouse control of the computer.

I've gone into device manager and seen that the only things listed under mouse is the usb mouse that she wants to use, and an item for Microsoft PS2 device. The mouse can be disabled using the "usage" feature at the bottom of the screen. But when I switch to the PS2 listing, "usage" is ghosted out and I can't change that setting. So presently, both the mouse and the touchpad are functioning.

I'm not at her house right now, and can't run SIW etc. to find out the particular touchpad info. Until I can do that, does anyone have a suggestion for disabling only the touchpad? Thanks. Jim

A:Disable touchpad in XP

Laptops which don't automatically disable the trackpad when you plug a mouse in usually have a 'switch' in the form of the Fn key and one of the 'F' keys. Look for a key that has a representation of a mouse or a trackpad on it or even both. I've seen all three variants. And I can't tell you which 'F' key it will be on, this is one aspect of keyboards that is not standardised !

When you do find the relevant key, press and hold the 'Fn' key and press the relevant 'F' key at the same time, then let go. You should get some notification that the trackpad is disabled and it should stay that way until you press the same key combination to switch back at some future time.

I'm looking to disable the touchpad from within windows. I can disable in BIOS but would rather do it from within windows. Most drivers have an option in device manager to disable but the touchpad doesn't. Presently, Microsoft has installed it's official Windows 95 driver with it's updated version number, date and digital signature. Another option would be Synaptics driver but I'm not really into downloading and installing 14 mb's just to disable the touchpad. On the other hand, if I could get just the synaptics driver without the extra bloat, it might would work. Any ideas or suggestions?

I recently fixed my computer, and had some trouble with it.

I have fixed all these problems down to the last bit, no thanks to some, I'm even glad I didn't follow some of the bad advice... I need to disable my touchpad because the left mouse button doesn't work and the right button registers at random times, so I plugged in a usb mouse and everything is ho-hum except that because of the touchpad the right button goes sparatic sometimes... do I need to disable the driver? I think there should be another way...

Hi

I have an Advent 7204 laptop running Vista Premium. It's one problem is the touchpad. Double tapping the touchpad is the same as clicking one of the mouse buttons which is infuriating as it happens frequently when I don't want it to whilst typing!!!

I'd like to disable this feature but cannot find any option for it (I can't even seem to disable the touchpad entirely and use a mouse instead?!?!). None of the Fn buttons seem to do it and there is nothing in my system tray.

Anyone ideas greatly appreciated...!

You can probably disable it, but need to know which service runs for it. Open a command window and type the following at the prompt: sc queryex > c:\services.txt

then attach the services.txt file in your c:\ folder here.

What touchpad software do you have installed? In Synaptics or Alps, you should be able to click on the driver icon in the system tray or on mouse settings in control panel, then go to the device settings tab and disable the touchpad from there.

Okay. I see lots of comment about how this is a solved problem. It is NOT SOLVED. My touchpad does NOT have an enable/disable button on it.

I am running Win 8 on a new (last Xmas) HP Envy laptop. Until a few weeks ago, I could very sweetly disable the touchpad whenever there was a mouse detected by the system. it worked great. Sometime in April or May, a standard system "upgrade" took that away. I keep my system updated with current drivers, and OS updates. I now regret that because this WAS working until an upgrade broke it. There USED to be an option in the Control Panel for the touchpad saying "disable touchpad when mouse connected"--and that has now disappeared. (So much for "new and improved"!)

NOW...yes, I can go to the control panel. Yes, I can go to Pointing device properties. And yes, I can disable the touchpad. BUT IT DOES NOT STAY DISABLED. If the system goes to sleep from inactivity...the touchpad re-enables itself. If I'm working on the system for 20 or 30 minutes, the touchpad re-enables itself. If I re-boot the system...the touchpad re-enables itself. I have disabled all the gestures on the touchpad, but it won't let me disable buttons. This is driving me crazy.

HOW DO I PERMANENTLY GET THIS FRIGGIN' SYSTEM TO AUTOMATICALLY DISABLE THE TOUCHPAD IF THERE IS A MOUSE CONNECTED???

Over and over again, on HP forums, Synaptics forums, tech forums, I see the tech "experts" telling me this is a "solved&quo... Read more

I searched for months trying to find a fix for this problem. This page provides the solution.
Just following the instructions above. You will download and install new touchpad driver which somehow got removed or disabled. After install and restart, go back to control panel and then mouse properties. The touchpad tab will be there after the download. Just turn it off and save and apply. Test the touchpad and it should be disabled. I hate microsoft and dell for putting me through this. The answer is so obvious but for some reason it throws people for a loop.

A:How to disable touchpad on my Tecra M10-10H?

After reading your posting I must say that we don't know anything about your notebook.
Which OS do you use?
Does FN keys work or not in general?
Is touchpad driver installed or not?

In my opinion you should visit Toshiba download page on http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp and install touchpad driver and Toshiba value added package. After doing this check please if FN+F9 works. If not you should be able to disable touchpad in mouse properties. after Synaptics driver installation new additional tab will be added ? ?Device settings? and there you will find option enable/disable.

Our organization recently invested in a large batch of 250 G4 notebooks. I'm wondering if there's a way to quickly enable/disable the touchpad, modify something in our group policy, or distribute a driver update or something to allow for this option. Due to the environment many of our staff are working in (frequently out in the community or even operating off of mobile hotspots in their parked vehicle), many users don't use a mouse, but would like the option to turn the touchpad off while typing to avoid misplacing the cursor. Naturally, they'll need the ability to easily turn the touchpad back on without the use of a mouse in this case. As a result, I don't see navigating to the mouse settings to disable the touchpad as being a viable option, as they wouldn't have the ability to turn it back on when they were done typing. I'm used to seeing a Fn + F key option to disable the touchpad, but this doesn't seem to be available on this model. Is there a solution that would result in functionality with that level of simplicity? If not, what other options are there?

I have a Sony Viao VGN-SZ61WN/C. I couldn't stand Vista, especially Windows Mail, so i have "downgraded" to XP Home. All that is fine and I have all the relevant drivers-- I think! BUT, when I was using Vista, I was able to use an external mouse and disable the touchpad. Now however, I can't find any way of disabling it, resulting in text jumping all over the place whenever I accidentally brush it. I have asked Sony tech support and they have no answer. There is no button on the keyboard.
I have been into Device Manager and tried just uninstalling each of the pointing devices shown there in turn, to no avail.
2 devices are shown:
PS/2 Compatible Mouse
HID-compliant Mouse

If I uninstall the driver of the PS/2 Compatible mouse, the external mouse stops working.
If I uninstall the HID-compatible mouse, the same thing happens—the external mouse stops working. There is nothing there about a touchpad.
Problem is, this Viao had a link in Vista to Sony for configuring it. It is no longer there in XP.
Is there ANYTHING I can do, as I hate touchpads and want to use a mouse but this is driving me crazy, even if I am REALLY careful!
Help please—nice techy people!
