What is the power adapter for Aspire One Cloudbook...

Q: What is the power adapter for Aspire One Cloudbook...

I would like to buy an extra travel power adapter (US plugs) for my Cloudbook. Does anyone know the part number for the adapter? Also, I would like to use an external battery to charge the Cloudbook while travelling. The external battery has a regular USB 2.0 that's on most external battery chargers, and I would need a cord that goes to the power of the Cloudbook. Does anyone know of a solution? Thank you.

The Windows 10 key is electronically injected into the computer. Windows 10 should automatically be activated if you have the Acer OEM operating system installed. It is possible that something was not done right when the product was refurbished that is causing activation issues. My suggestion is to try activating by phone using the instructions on http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/26289. If that is unsuccessful, you may need to contact the company you bought the refurbished system through, to see how they can assist. If they can't help, send me a private message with your serial number.

I bought my acer aspire one back in March of 2009. A couple days ago, the adapter started to go out on me, and when i move the cord a certain way, it disconnects and goes to battery. If i move it again, it works again.

Considering that i unplug and replug in the laptop at least once every day, is this the average life of the cord or is there something wrong with the cord itself?

My daughter damaged her power adapter for her Acer Aspire V7, and when we tried to replace it with a part we bought from a third-party vendor (BattDepot), she said her computer would charge, but she couldn't use it while it was charging; the cursor would jump around the page and click on random things. I want to get a charger this time from Acer, but I can't figure out what I should buy. Can someone let me know? Thanks!

I replaced the DC jack on an Acer today with a new one. When the laptop has the battery in the power LED shows a power source(unfortunately the battery is dead). When I remove the battery and plug in the charger to the new DC jack, no LED. Hitting the power button results in a flash from the power button light and power LED for an instant but no POST or boot. I tried different chargers as I have a few universals laying around so that's not it.....What's the problem?

A:Acer Aspire 5742 no power from dc jack, replaced it, still no power

Maybe not enough power on my acer laptop the charger says the output is 19 volts 3.4 amps and it runs fine without the battery installed, When I dont have the battery installed and the charger pluged in there is no indication that the changer is indeed plugged in and also when I turn it on I usually press the button just a bit longer to turn it on

My laptop will no longer turn on.  When the AC adapter is plugged in, the LED light is white indicating power is arriving at the laptop. However, nothing happens when I push the power button. Troubleshooting steps I have completed already include: Hard reset (several times including after each step below)Tried starting without the batteryRemoved all removable components and reseated themRemoved all removable components as well as bottom cover. Cleaned with compressed air. Put everything back.Nothing appears wrong and nothing happened between the last time it turned on and this time that I am aware of. The laptop is out of warranty, and I am pretty handy with computers. Is there anything that can be suggested short of a hardware replacement that would help get this resolved? TIA

The tips I got with this Kensington 33197 power adapter have numbers stenciled on them like N3, N5, N19, etc. The tips sold on their web site make no mention of the "N" numbers and have numbers like K20059, K20050, etc. and there is no cross reference.

You can also see a complete reference for "N" numbers to all the laptops they support at the above link. Again, no mention of the numbers Kensington uses on their site.

I need a cross reference for these kinds of numbers.

Kensington referred me to their telephone tech support; but, there is a language or cultural barrier that prevents their understanding what I need.

Does anyone know of such a reference?

Daughter last used laptop on battery power and ran id down completely until computer shut off. She plugged in the power cord and it would not come on when pressing the power button.  Laptop was plugged in overnight and this morning same issue - the power light just blinks five times when you press the power button. This is the same behaviour whether plugged into power or not. I've tried holding down the power button. Tried with battery removed and A/C power, but then no light comes on at all.  I've tried removing the battery and A/C power, holding the power button down for 30 seconds, then install battery and plug in A/C power, but no difference.  I tried a different A/C power adapter and no difference. Any ideas?

This is a common problem (I see lots of posts)
The problem source is the [Dell] AC adapter.  PA-21 Family, 65W, P/N: NX061.  It is made in China.
I have an XPS M1330.  Using Dell after warranty service, replaced the Mother Board twice, replaced the battery twice, replaced the AC adapter twice - not fixing it.
Turns out the power warning message is very informative.  It states "Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance".  So, I plugged in my Dell 95W adapter - WOW Problem Solved.
A lab test of my new Dell 65W AC adapter shows it to be 64.6 watts.  If this unit gets hot (like after several hours of use), it may not put out the full 65 watts - the system may not recognize the adapter, it may power the system ok, but won't charge the battery.
These units burn out after only a few months of use. Their cables are too fragile. If Dell's or their supplier's Quality Control can't produce a reliable 65W product - I found seveal "Made In USA" universal adapters.

A:AC Adapter - Alert - "AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined"

Well my solution was simple.
I just removed the battery pack and powered up my notebook. Then I turned off the notebook replaced the battery pack and VOILA. The error message was gone.

Hello,After a long fought battle with being unable to reboot, it turned out that the Intel Ultimate-N 6300 was not a compatible card for the Acer Aspire E5-551G model I have. So, replacing the stock Atheros AR956x card resolved that, and after ensuring drivers are up to date and even applying the newly released Bios upgrade which was aimed at fixing connectivity with the Atheros cards shipped with these models, I'm still finding my connection is fickle and frequently plagued with latency spikes. Which while web browsing is only a minor irritation while attempting to play any game online where latency can be problematic it's horrid. So, I'm looking to again open this up and swap the card out for a better quality (preferably not an Atheros card as they do not even officially supply drivers for their cards to end users). My question is, what are some known compatible cards (internal) for this laptop?

I bought this laptop back in June and started having problems with it in August. I called Acer and they are telling me that it is a software issue to pay them $130 to talk me through fixing it. The wireless adapter will sometimes disable itself, but when it is working it will find the networks, connect and ask for the security phrase. When I type in the security phrase it says Windows is unable to connect.

I have tried two factory restores, uninstalled and reinstalled, updated the adapter driver which is for the

Atheros AR5B93 Wireless network adapter

I can connect with no problems using the ethernet hardwired.

I have tried several of the methods recomended on this site to fix it and have not had any luck yet.

I have two other computers connected to this network along with a PS3, all wirelessly and working great.

The computer has just had its second factory reset about 20 minutes ago and it still does not work.

Can someone please help me. Let me know if any other information is needed.

I have recently upgraded my Aspire V15 from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and noticed the problem only after trying to download games from Steam. I am having a very slow download speed of around 2mb/s whereas other laptops around my house are doing around 20mb/s. Upon checking the current wireless network adapter under Device Manager, it shows that the driver's version is 4.0.XXXX.  I have tried downloading newer drivers (version 10.0.XXX and above) and tried installing them. However after installing them, the driver version still remains at 4.0.XXX with the download speed remaining at around 2mb/s. TLDR: After updating the Qualcom Atheros (currently version 4.X.X.X) to newer versions (version 10 and above), it supposedly successfully installs properly BUT on the device manager it is still listed as version 4. Can anybody help me with this problem and advice me on how to properly update the driver to the latest version? Edit: Just to add on, there is no problem with my internet connection, I can surf the net and watch youtube videos just fine. It's just that the download speed is unusually slow compared to other laptops in my house using the same connection (not just on Steam but for downloads in general) and the driver is unable to update to new versions.

I was logged onto the internet wirelessly one day and all of a sudden, my internet goes out. The orange light on the laptop under the wireless button goes off. When I pressed it, it said no device. I have uninstalled the Microsoft ISATAP Adapter and reinstalled it. That didn't work. I recovered to a prvious date. That worked for about 5 minutes and it did the same thing. This happened about a month ago and I have been spending most of my time trying to fix it. I can't find anything that works. I read someone else's post on here about a similar problem; still unsure what to do.

There is an exclamation over Microsoft ISATAP Adapter in the device manager. There has beeen something under Network Adapters that started with Atheros but it has disappeared so I can't remember what it was exactly.

So basically when I plug in an Ethernet cable my wireless adapters and wireless autoconfig services automatically disable, and when I enable them, they disable immediately. I want to use my laptop as a hotspot for my phone but it keeps saying wireless auto config service is not running!

Laptop Acer Aspire V5-573G.
wireless adapter: Dual Band Wireless-N 7260

A:Wireless adapter issues (Acer Aspire V5-573G)

You have to bridge the two connections. You are really better off getting a Hotspot than using your phone as the router. Most phones that can be used as a Hotspot, allow up to five devices to connect to it.

Hi, I am hoping someone here can help me. I have been using my Acer Aspire Z5600's ethernet connection to access the internet, until last night when my power tripped out. When it came back, I could only connect to the internet via the wireless adapter. Looking in device manager, there is no sign of any Ethernet adapter. I've managed to download what I think is the most up to date updater, but running it shows no drivers need to be updated. Has anyone heard of this problem before, and if so how did you reinstate the ethernet adapter, please? Thanks, Clive

A:Acer Aspire Z5600 LAN adapter suddenly disappeared

Device manager, click on View, show hidden devices, click on your network adapters and see if there's any sign of ethernet adapter.

I have an Acer Aspire 5750. Recently, wireless connection has been spotty on my computer. Phone and other laptops in household work normal using our Wifi.

On my Acer, there is the F3 button that you're supposed to press with the Function button to enable/disable wireless. Unfortunately, that key and other keys on one side of the laptop are broken. So I use a wireless keyboard, that doesn't have that F3 wireless button.

Problem is I can't turn "on" the wireless function on my computer. There is no small switch on the external body of the laptop. Every time I tried to connect to my Wifi, I get a notice that it couldn't connect and to reset my network adapter. The network adapter Intel Centrino Advanced N6205 is enabled when I check the Device Manager. Says it's working normal. Without pressing the F3 button function, I can't find/get to that screen to enable the Wifi.

Any help would be awesome. Thanks so much.

Hi I have an Acer Aspire X3950 desktop, I am running Win7 and have tried two different wifi adapters and they install but they will not connect. It is almost as if my computer itself is blocking the adapter. I spoke to an On Networks rep for over two hours and he tried everything from reinstalling to rebooting and tried three different drivers. He was from a different country and when I told him what the troubleshooter said he would not deviate from the script they give them.... 2 hours and he was not even close. It saw the device but it wouldn't even blink. Acers website nor customer service will assist me because my warranty is expired. They want me to send the computer back but I have a feeling it is an easy fix I just don't know enough about computers to say oh just uncheckmark this box. I know in the past I used wifi but switched to an ethernet cable. I don't have the option to use an ethernet cable at this time.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

What firewall or security suite is, or ever was, on the system?

Install one of the adapters, make sure you have the latest driver from the adapter manufacturer's web site, and ...

What exactly happens when you try to connect?

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 8 or 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Identify your network if it is not obvious.

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.

For the last two weeks, every time I start my Dell INSPIRON E1705 while using the power supply I am greeted with the following message. "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation". I press the F1 Key and everything works fine. I've read about this on other websites and most say it's a design flaw in the power supply after the cord has been properly wound around the supply as designed. Apparently a few of the cords internal wire strands become broken and cause this message. My computer is from June 2006 and shouldn't be having this issue so early...or ever. This seems like a flaw that should have created some type of manufacturers recall since so many people are having this issue. I'm of course out of warranty, will Dell replace this free of charge?

`

A:Power Supply - "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined....."

You are correct, the failure is due toloss of the power supply ID signal. Sometimes this happens because of strain on the plug, which breaks the signal wire. Some even are so severe that the insulation breaks away from the plug; this is due to rough handling. The other cause is one or more of the power socket solder connections to the system board become broken. This also is related to severe handling. I have seen one case where all three power connections and three of four mechanical connections were disconnected. If the power supply is bad, a replacement will cure the problem. If not, then the socket is bad, and this will require a system board replacement. If you are experienced, you can try to resolder the connections. I am experienced and was not able to get my daughter's E6000 to work by resoldered. More recent Dells are using a replacable power connection board which is a much cheaper repair.

I own an A01-131-C726 Cloudbook which comes with Win 10 x64 preinstalled, I noticed today that Acer has released x32 drivers so I deleted the OS partition and used the mediacreatortool to create a DVD but my acer cannot see the disc (another non UEFI computer can see it) so I used the mediacreatortool again to create a USB thumbdrive of x32 AND x64 but I get a winload.efi error when I try to install the x32 variant, the x64 works fine. Can somebody help me out here as it seems like my acer cloudbook can only run x64 software, is there something im doing wrong?

A:cloudbook downgrade win 10 x32

Hi, I will never get why you want to downgrade but that's non of my business. Your cloudbook is 64bit and I assume that it has a UEFI BIOS. Compared to normal BIOS a UEFI BIOS requires that the boot image (in this case the winload.efi) to match the UEFI architecture (which in your case is x64 I suppose). So booting a x32 system will be more or less imposible for this reason. SInce the x32 has a x32 winload.efi which will not be compatible with your x64 UEFI BIOS. And an x64 OS can run both x32 and x64 software.

or

Laptop AC Adapter: 19 Volts, 65 Watts, 3.42 Amps, 5.5mm x 2.5mm Connector

Someone gave me a new, in the box AC Adapter with USB port, made by Insignia.
The documentation says "converts 120v AC to 3-12v with 1300mA max output."

I realize this is a question not exactly hardware related, but I'm hoping someone knows the answer....I'm afraid to plug it in and fry my laptop

I bought a Dynex USB 2.0 4-Port Hub last week and have decided to add an external power supply to power the hub. The short and terse User Manual notes on the final page that a 5Volt / 2.5 Amp Power Adapter may be connected. I called their customer support number and talked to a lady, but her best advice was return to the store and ask there. My experience with this store over the years has been fat chance for this kind of request. Has anyone got a suggestion as to where I can purchase such a USB Power Adapter?

A:USB Hub Power Adapter

Radio Shack would be a good place to start although you might have to get one of their adjustable models. A Google search should also turn up something. Actually I just replaced my D-Link powered USB1 hub with a USB2 model. The old one is just sitting around and it has a 5V 2.4A adapter. If you want it so you can use the adapter just PM me and I'll send it to you.

I recently bought a replacement power adapter for my dell e1505. The computer works but it won't charge the battery and tells me that since the computer does not recognize the charger, I need to reseat the power adapter... What does that mean?

A:Power Adapter

Hello aaronbaron,

Reseat the power adapter just means make sure the power adapter is plugged in good on the laptop and the wall outlet. I would try powering off the laptop, unplug the power cord, take the new battery out. Reinstall the new battery only and try to power on the computer. If that does not work plug in the power cord and power up with the new battery installed.

Hi SUSMI,
The system is designed to support both 45W and 65W adapters - see the specifications here - http://dell.to/2fhPLIf
When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Hi there. I bought an Acer Cloudbook 11 with 32GB SSD a week ago (on 30Nov15).  Liked the machine as it suited my purpose.  Model is AO1-131-C22E. However, I am unable to install an update of Windows 10 Home that requires free space of nearly 10GB. I had uninstalled everything that I can, i.e. all Acer programs (abdocs, abphotos, etc), Office 365, Twitter and others, leaving only Windows and Mcafee antivirus. I had removed all files and photos off to a 64GB SD card plugged into the laptop.  The free space is still only 7.2GB. What else can I do to free more space to install the Windows update? If there is no solution, can I send the laptop back to Acer Singapore and ask to upgrade the SSD to 64GB (what is the price difference)? It looks like the 32GB SSD option is not a viable product. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks

A:Acer One Cloudbook 11 - how to free more space to ...

You might try to run a portable windows 10 from a larger USB or SD drive. Google "run" and the other keywords for ways to set one up. You'd probably need a very fast USB or SD card that might cost as much as or more than your cloudbook! 8^) Jack E/NJ

I recently purchased an Aspirt One Cloudbook 11 and it will NOT complete the Windows 10 version 1511, 10586 update.  This system came from the factory with a eMMC of only 16 gigs; I was told that this upgrade requires 3.7 gigs to upgrade.  As such -- it appears that this is an ACER flaw or Microsoft flaw in that I find it a tad frustrating that I bought this thing; but it can't even complete a simple upgrade.

I'm a tech guy, so I've already went through the rounds of dealing with a great tech of Acer, and the only answer was "sorry you're system doesn't have enough space" -- so really at this point, all I want to do is make sure either ACER or Microsoft knows this to avoid others from purchasing this system; and yes having any kind of external storage does NOTHING; from a CLEAN install the system is left with just a hair over 4 gigs out of 16; then the auto updates start and suck the eMMC dry leaving you with about a gig left (and the last update requires 3.7 gigs); you can't transfer any program files anywhere and you're just doomed; again I already had a tech remote into this dog and watchh him/her painfully do everything I already thought of.  The only way I could this thing ever being able to work is if I had the latest Windows 10 as an ISO with all it's patches alredy combined -- anyway, That's all folks!  Anyone who had the same issue, would be interesting to hear if there was a work around.

Hi I wonder if anyone can help. I have an Acer Aspire One 725 it has a broken screen. I have a replacement screen and have checked that it is the correct one for this model. When I replaced the screen (I have done this with other laptops) the laptop would not power on - nothing happened, no power light, no HDD activity, no fan. The battery did not have much charge (if any) so was plugged into the mains. The battery charge light was not on either. I then replaced the old broken screen (but did not screw everything back into place) it started up with no problems. However once I switched off to fix the screws/facia etc I have the same issue no activity other than the first time the power switch light flickered a couple of times but no other activity.

The only difference I now have is that the battery charge light comes on but still no activity.

I do not think this is the 'black screen of death' as that seems to occur with the powerlight on but no other activity - I do not have a light on the power.

Any help gratefully received.

I have tried 3 different power cords, hoping the power supply was bad, but that's not it. I have tried resetting the internal battery using the paper clip method, waiting 4-5 minutes and reconnecting power, but that hasn't worked either. I guess it's a problem with the connection between the power and motherboard, or the motherboard itself. Does anyone have any other ideas?  It's not under warranty. I've never had any problems at all with this machine. What are my options?

My laptop, aspire E1-510P will not power on. A blue light will come on for a few seconds then it shuts off. What is the problem & What can I do to fix it?

A:My acer aspire E1-510 will not power on

On Acer Aspire notebooks, blue light indication has different meanings depending on whether you are using your laptop on battery or by connecting it to a power adapter. To know more, the following link can be helpful:http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9674/~/how-does-the-battery-indicator-light-on-my-a... In your case, it is recommended to check if there is any issue with the battery. To do this, remove the battery from your laptop and connect the laptop directly to power adapter. If the laptop works fine now, there may be some issue with the battery. To confirm this, you can try using another battery (if possible) and see if that resolves the issue. Hope this will help you.

A friend asked me to look into why his Aspire One (P1VE6, 722-0879) doesn't power up. The transformer is putting out 19v so I assume it's okay. But with the transformer plugged into the netbook there's not a flicker of life after pressing the power button, regardless of whether the battery is installed or absent.  One possibility is that the battery is dead, and a battery must be present for the netbook to power up. Can anyone confirm if a working battery must be present for an Aspire One to power up?  Thanks.

I am planning on making this project myself but first I have one question. Here is the project I will be making:
http://siliconrepublic.blogspot.com.au/2011/02/arduino-based-pc-ambient-lighting.html

It says I need a 12V DC supply for powering the breadboard. When searching up for 12V DC supplies, I only get power supply's that plug into the wrong wall socket (I live in Australia).
Do I need to get something like the article suggests:
http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-AC-Veh...1KZ6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1297231222&sr=8-2

Or can I get something such as this:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DC-12V-1...?pt=AU_Laptop_Accessories&hash=item336678ae52
If the first option is the only possibility, how do I get the plug to go into my wall socket?
Also, how do I get the other end plugged into the breadboard when the product just has a single plug on the end?

A:What type of power adapter do I need?

You can use the Ebay adaptor, the easiest way to get 2 wires is to get a socket that fits the plug, like this one :- http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/5-5-x-2-...05?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item4167b5b34d and solder 2 wires to that socket.

The circuit at your link uses a 2 wire plug into the breadboard, you would have to get a similar plug OR you could push bare wires into the breadboard.

OR you could cut the plug off to reveal the 2 wires but they will probably be quite thin and may not connect well if pushed into the breadboard holes.

I have a 90w power adapter from an older notebook that will work with my HP DV5-1015nr. I transport my notebook between home and office. I'd like to utilize the older power brick, so that I won't need to transport a power brick back and forth. The tips on both adapters, of course, are of a different diameter.      My multi-tester identifies that the tip is hot for both adapters. The problem I have is that the older power brick has two wires: core wire (+) and shield (-), and the newer power adapter has three wires: shield that is connected to the core of tip (+), black that is connected to outer part of cylindrical shaft that must be the ground, and white connected to inner part of cylindrical shaft (also negative?). So do the black and white wires on the newer adapter need to be soldered to the shield on the older one?

A:Wiring for Power adapter?

Just a guess, since it is 90watt, they may have run the extra wire to carry the load, shield is always much larger than center tip wire. Did you measure voltage and ploarity of all three connections with the brick plugged in? Tip is always + and ouside is always - on a HP, not sure what the third is, see if there is any voltage on it, It could also be some sort of sensor wire for the charging system on the mobo. Better to buy another adapter than smoke the motherboard on the lappy taking a chance. If you want to chance it just connect the two wires that are on the center and outside. Leave the 3rd odd one unconnected. probably can be found used for cheap.

I have a 20 pin motherboard but the power supply I have available has a 24 pin connector. I've read that you can simply plug them together by offsetting the 24 pin one but so far I don't see that working at all (and 'never the twain shall meet', so to speak). I've found adapters but they all say something akin to

'allows you to connect your existing 20 pin power supply to your new 24-pin compatible motherboard'

You can use it the other way around, correct?

thanks

A:20 to 24 pin power supply adapter

Some mainboard connectors are 20+4 pins where the 4 pins unsnap from the 20 pins for use with boards with a 20 pin connector. If your power supply doesn't have that feature you would use an adapter such as this.

I have this mode laptop: toshiba satelite p305d-s8900 And am going to have to replace the power adapter pretty soon. It cuts out all the time and the cord is so flimsy it will probably break pretty soon. Any idea where I can get a new one for under $50.00? I'd prefer to have an actual duplicate, not another brand thats just generic and cheap. On Toshiba's website the replacement is $89.00.

A:Toshiba - new a/c power adapter - where can I get a new one?

You can try NewEgg.com. Anything under $80 is going to be generic and cheap.

Hi all,

i hope im posting in the right section....(apologies if not)

The power adapter/charger for my toshiba laptop failed recently.

Im looking for a replacement and have see several different options.

The original toshiba part (part no: PA3290E-3AC3) is available for about 50 pounds
however ive seem lots online which are the same spec, and described as replacments for the above part. the thing is these cost less than half the price of the original
Although these are not the genuine part it says they will work.

i was a bit worried that it may damage my laptop if i dont use the exact part.

could anyone advise me on this please and the best thig to do.

Thanks
A

A:power adapter does not work

I have a Toshiba that I am using an adapter made by Lite-On. I have been using it for about 2 years and no ill effects. It was about 1/3 the cost of the Toshiba adapter.

I have a compaq nx6325 lap top, which will not turn on at all. The power adapter
shows 18V between the inner and outer ring and appears ok, led on etc.But what's the tiny center connector for in the plug? Should there be a voltage on it to earth, or to the ring connectors? Finally, should I be able to power-up the lap-top with the power adapter plugged in, and the battery out?

A:Power adapter center pin

Sounds like the Centre pin has broken away and lodged itself in the plug. I cannot tell you which is positive and which is negative with regards to the rings on the plug. Because different Manufacturers use different combinations and with that different Voltages too. Generally speaking the outside piece is the male end and the receiving plug is the female -go figure-
Hope this link works http://www.niteflux.com/BuyCables.aspx you can see what I am mentioning, obviously this is not your cable but for the example of male to female ends the description matches the pictures ( not the 'Y' cord on the link )
