Difference in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Personalization

Q: Difference in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Personalization

Good evening,

I've noticed a difference in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Personalization between editions of Windows 10.

My wife's laptop is running Windows 10 Home, and her personalization screen looks like this:

I'm running Windows 10 Enterprise, and my personalization screen looks like this:

Notice that the menu options on the left, and quick access to change the theme settings on the bottom are missing from the enterprise screenshot.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Is it simply a difference between editions? Or is there a setting that is not turned on in my installation?

Thanks in advance!

Hello all! I've recently run into some trouble with my computer. I cannot access most of the icons in the personalization menu (Screen Saver, Sounds, Mouse Pointers, Theme, Display Settings) I can change my background and access the "Window Color and Appearance" icon, but not the "Open classic appearance properties for more color options" link therein. I am unable to choose default programs to open files. Many of the icons in the control panel are similarly afflicted.

When I try to open these, I receive this message: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium with IE8 on an HP Pavillion dv2000 laptop. Mine is the only account, and has full admin privileges(supposedly). I've run Comodo and CCleaner scans which have found nothing. I can supply more information if asked.

Can anyone help? Many thanks!

I have three icons in the control panel: Scheduled Task, Scanners & Cameras, and Network Connections, these three are the problem. I can go into the Control Panel, click on one and have it open, but if I follow up and click on another it does nothing, the other icons work, just not these ones. I can close the panel, reopen it and I can then open up one of the other of the three. Nothing is opening up behind the window either, just plain ol nothing happens. The computer has been scanned for any malware/spyware/virii

Hello,

I am running Vista Ultimate SP1.
Today I had a look at the control panel to uninstall some software. Unfortunately the control panel didn?t display any items. It was just gray shaded.

What I tried to solve the problem:
1. restart PC -> same result
2. system restore 3 days: most of the items are back , BUT 3 are missing.
text to speech, index options, offline folders

Could anybody explain to me how to restore or to reinstall or to create new items?

I would imagine that all items were there two weeks ago and I have no idea what I did wrong.

Thanks

P.S. I am admin and I there is no virus or spyware on the machine.

Hi, it seems a spyware has infected my computer. I have since removed it, but I don't know how to fix the damages it has done to my PC.

I can access my control panel, and a couple items in there, but most, including the most important items (Add/remove programs, sounds and audio, user accounts, windows security etc etc) I cannot access. I remember in the RC build of windows 7 when I opened up the control panel on the left it showed a menu which at the bottom had applets that were recently used so could be quickly accessed.

On the RTM of windows 7 this menu on the left is gone, vanished, caput. Is now just an empty area. Is there an option to bring this back or was it removed after the public RC build?

Help!

Noticed a problem when I tried to adjust the date and time to our new timezone by clicking "adjust date and time" in the taskbar: get a "run dll as an app" error message.

Then noticed I can't open the date/time icon in the Control Panel either: get a message "An exception occurred while trying to run c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll,Control_Rundll C:\windows\system32\timedate.cpl, Date and Time."

Finally, I found that the display, system, and several other icons in the control panel don't work anymore either. No error messages there, they just don't open. Same when I click on "properties" for just about anything.

I have run the latest versions of Norton Antivirus, Spybot, and Malwarebytes and they found nothing. Also tried doing a System Restore to a couple months ago, but still have the errors.

Where do I even begin to troubleshoot? Seems like a lot going wrong. I'm running Windows XP Pro, patched with the latest updates, on a Dell Inspiron laptop.

I own a bit tweaked version of Windows 7 and I cant access gpedit, so I have to do it in the registry.
I've started to looking into

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Panel\don?t load

and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace

where I've deleted some of the entrys but they still show up in Control Panel.
Any ideas?

A:How to remove Control Panel items by editing registry?

Under the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\ create a key and name it "don't load".

Now, under the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\don't load, create a new string value and give it the name of the applet which you want to hide. Google for the applet names, they'll all have the extension .cpl. E.g. if you want to get rid of "Phone and Modem", the name will be "Modem.cpl".

Set the value of this string to "no".

Hi all,

A while ago I noticed that items in control panel only open after a delay of around 1 second. This delay seems to be built in to Windows 7 as I've tried this on 3 different computers running it and it's the same on all of them. So say for example, I open control panel and click 'system and security', nothing in there will open instantly e.g. Action Centre, Firewall, System etc all have that delay after clicking them. I've lowered the value of MenuShowDelay in the registry but that makes no difference.

It's annoying me a bit now because I've just bought an SSD and everything is very snappy. I'm quite sure it's not hardware limitations causing this delay but rather a setting in Windows 7.

I seem to remember there being a registry tweak to fix this but I cannot for the life of me find it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome av115 mate par for the course and I don't think you will get to change it I personally use a single click option in Folder Options for the left click it makes no difference as I said to the time it takes for the feature to open but is easier for me for clicking.

But none of these people got their issue resolved, and all ended up reinstalling the OS.

My programs work fine, but they are not listed in Control Panel/ Programs and features

I can even uninstall them by manually browsing to c:\program files\<name of software>\uninst000.exe (or whatever the name of the uninstaller is)

I have about 200 programs installed, and Control Panel/ Programs and features lists only 98 now (it was listing even less, but I got a few back after manually uninstalling/ reinstalling, don't have the patience to reinstall all the 200+ programs I have).

Short of performing a factory reset (F11 at startup and then launch HP Complete Recovery, or booting up from the recovery disks I created when I got the computer), is there something that can be done to fix this issue??

I have installed Winamp [WA] on my new PC - Win 8.1, 64-bit. However, it is not listed in the 'Set Your Default Programs' section of 'default programs' in my Control Panel even though it's in File Explorer. WA is recognised in the file association section though.

Also, (and just as importantly to me as one of those music geeks (!)), the .flac extension is not listed under the file extensions listing for 'file associations' either.

I'm really confused by all this. Is there a reason why WA is missing from the list of default programs? Is there some way of adding it to the list? Could it be that the latest version of WA - v5.666 - is just not compatible with 64-bit? Finally, how do I get my computer to recognise the .flac extension?

I have three machines that were running windows 8 on them. I used my MSDN to upgrade all 3 to 8.1 RTM. The only odd thing is search on just one of the PCs.

On this PC, when searching for items found in the control panel (such as "Indexing Options", etc) it seems to have an artificial 2-3 second delay before displaying the results under the search field. On the other two machines, they're near instant.

For those with 8.1, try it on your machine. Search for Indexing Options of File History and see how long it takes to show up, either by hitting Start and typing or Win+S...

The delay is driving me nuts. Is there any reason why this may be? I've already rebuilt the index and decreased the size of it, as well as rebooted several times and ran CCleaner a bit. The only difference is this machine is Win 8.1 Pro, while the others are regular. I have disabled the Bing web search on all three and all other settings have been left alone.

Thanks.

A:8.1 RTM- Slight delay when searching control panel items?

I resolved this on my own. It turned out I had a network share under my Music library. I assume the search service was going to search that before it listed control panel items. I removed the reference and it works normal now.

Let me say this before I say anything else, I am NOT a fan of registry cleaners. I do not trust them BUT of the registry cleaners out there the safest and least intrusive by far is the one built into Ccleaner. I would recommend you try running that to see if it helps. You can also check out Revo uninstaller as it will clean up this kind of thing as it uninstalls.

Or you can just follow the path's and delete them manually.

Ok, so I noticed that for a while I haven't been here my microsoft sounds when I boot up and shut down my machine. At first I thought that I didn't have the sound files but that wasn't it.

I went into control panel, sound and audio devices and click on the sound tab. Under the program events list, I notice that many of the program events were missing such as windows start up and windows shut down. This is why I wasn't hearing any sounds when I would shut down and start my computer.

My question is, how do you get those items back on the program event list?

I use windows XP home edition computer.

Any help or suggestions? The thing is the a lot of the items in the program list are missing. So lets say I wanted to change the sound that I hear when I turn my machine on, I would go under windows and highlight windows start. But on my program list, it is not there. Hence I have no sound when my computer goes on. It is a stupid thing I realize that but I am curious how the items were lost and wondering if I can get them back. But hey, my computer is 6 years old and still runs great. I should just be happy with that.

So like the title says, when I try to access "System" in Control Panel, my taskbar disappears for a brief moment and reappears a bit later (it's just the explorer.exe process crashing and opening again). Also when I reboot my PC, some programs that are set to start up automatically crash (flux.exe has stopped working for example). I don't know what to do and it's getting very frustrating. I did a to do a SFC /scannow and I'll attach the CBS.txt file. I'm really eager to find a solution to all of these problems .

Hi All,

My apologies if similar threads have been posted already, but having trawled the internet, I'm stuggling to find an answer to the problem I have my Dad's PC.

My Dad has bought a PC from Mesh computers in the UK with Vista Home Premium (32Bit I believe) pre-installed and with his account set up as an admin. I went around to set it all up for him, get him on broadband etc and that's where the problems started...

Without connecting to the internet, I attempted to install Norton Internet Security 2008 (Vista approved edition) which got half way through installation before erroring about "failing to initialize". The install had half worked (the firewall was up a running) so I connected myself to the internet (using the Windows firewall as well) to see what the problem was.

From that point, it all started going downhill. I couldn't install NIS 2008 (even after a "LiveInstall" seemingly from the internet), but then Vista functionality stopped working. Certain items in the control panel would no longer open, such as "User Accounts" and "System", clicking on "Windows Update" from the START bar would flash up a window for a split second before closing and clicking to update "Windows Defender" gave an error message about not being able to update at all.

Around the same time, the pre-installed sidebar gadgets (a clock and some pictures) magically removed themselves from the sidebar and I can no longer add items... Read more

A:Unable to open certain items in Control Panel + Update / Sidebar Issues

I have the same problem with my sister's laptop. It's an MSI VR220 with built in Windows Vista? Home Premium installed.

there was pre-installed the Norton Internet Security 2008 and I uninstalled it (I allso run the Norton removal tool). Some days after I noticed that many items from the control panel do not open (the window apears blank for a sec, and it desappears). Some of these are: personalize menu, network & sharing center, Windows Update (Updates seems that are installed ok though..), Users accounds, System, Sideshow, Speech Recognition, Autoplay, power options.

I haven't found any real workaround,
please help!

I have an old ipod with lots of music on it, and a somewhat less old iphone with some more music on it, and a very new iphone I'd like to put all that music onto. :-)

I couldn't figure out how to do that -- itunes just lets you move "purchased music" around as far as I can tell -- but a search indicated that I need to make hidden files visible, go into my ipod's music folders, then manually move it.

I'm told that to do that I have to make hidden files visible and to do THAT I need to go into "Appearance and Personalization" in "Control Panel" and change the setting.

D'oh! Apparance and Personalization DOES NOT EXIST on my control panel!

Any ideas?

A:No "Appearance and Personalization" in Control Panel

I'm running windows XP on an old Dell Inspiron 1501 and I'm trying to get my microphone to play directly through my speakers so I can record them both simultaneously. The only answer I've been finding is to tick the 'microphone' checkbox in the volume control playback properties panel, but I don't have a microphone checkbox. There should be a 'microphone' box under SW Synth and CD player but I don't get one apparently.I've downloaded the latest SigmaTel Audio drivers from Dell and despite not having a problem with them before this, I'm inclined to believe that they're the problem. Any ideas?

A:No microphone control in playback Volume Control panel

Okay well of course I find an answer right after posting the topic:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/t/19295458.aspx
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/p/18112824/18235810.aspx#18235810

Those two pages detail how to get an Input Monitor checkbox which functions just like the microphone one I wanted (although you can only mute it, not alter the volume). I used Instructional Set 3 from the second page, having to add the 'RecMonitorMute' entry as detailed in the first page and I can now hear my microphone input directly through my speakers.

HOWEVER, I'm still unable to record both the microphone and speaker sound at the same time. I thought recording the 'Stereo Mix' channel with the microphone coming through the speakers would work but it isn't and I don't know why. Any ideas?

Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)

Hello!
I got myself an Audio-Technica AT2020USB+ condenser microphone a few weeks ago, and I haven't really found out how I can change the gain, which I hear is important to do.
There is only one slider where the gain slider also should have been. The mic doesn't have a gain know like some other microphones have.

As you can see there is one slider. It only changes volume as far as I know.

How can I change the gain, is it needed, or can I maybe control gain using the volume slider?
If I can't change it directly through the mic or through the control panel, how can I change it? D:

Thanks in advance!

A:Can't control gain! No slider in control panel!

I have a recording studio (Sonar X3) and use several AT mics but they are not USB mics (such as the AT2035 and AT2050).

"Volume level" is the same as "gain". You can adjust the "Volume Level" or you can adjust the "gain" - both are the same thing. On mixers, amplifiers, etc, some will call the volume control "level" and others "gain".

A USB mic should have its own listing in the Sound/Recording Panel. Whatever slider that is has, such as what you show, should adjust the volume level. Many recording programs also have volume level adjustments.

select your view as Classic View (in LHS sidebar) when you open Control Panel from Start>Control Panel - close it as that and it should remember your preference so that next time you open it, it will open in Classic View

Hi all,

I'm a pretty proficient Windows user (and Google-searcher) but I can't seem to solve this one:

Windows 8 search refuses to search items in my control panel. For example, if I tap the windows key and type "power options" or "Sound" I get nothing. I'm pretty sure this is supposed to work as it's mentioned in many of Microsoft's own help documents as the easiest way to navigate to these settings.

Other searches are working, including files on secondary drives, etc.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

The network I maintain at a school has policy restrictions which do not allow users access to the printer controls. However I would like them to have the ability to control their own print jobs and unpause printers etc. But when editing the policy I find that they get access to control panel at the same time and can do lots of possible damage.

Can I do this any way while minimising possible damage? We are running an NT4 network with some 95 and some NT workstations.

many thanks

I have had a problem with the control panel for over a month now.

Whenever I click on an icon in the control I get the following message:

'Windows cannot find 'C:\windows\system 32\rundll32.exe'
From the control paned I also cannot access Accessibility options, add hardware, automatic updates, date and time, display, game controllers, internet options, java, keyboard, mail, mouse, network setup wizard, power options, quicktime, realplayer, language options, security center, sounds and audio devices, speech, system, user accounts, windows firewall, and network wireless setup.

I have run many malware apps and still have the problem with the control panel. I corresponded with chryssi2001 at this site:

BleepingComputer.com > Security > HijackThis Logs and Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal

and under this topic: Access to control panel, cannot access any programs

I ran Hijackthis, Copmbofix, Kaspersky, and several other programs but none corrected the problem. I cannot remove any programs from my computer, cannot change the resolution, etc.

I am currently running Stopzilla, Comodo internet security, avast on-access scanner.

Currently I am connected to the intenet but the local area connection icon says: "Acquiring network address" but I am connected. I have had to reboot lately to even get online. The computer starts but doesn't connect unless I disable Comodo and reboot.

Unable to open the program "Add/Remove programs" from Control Panel. Am trying to remove unused programs and fee uo hard disk space.

A:Control panel

What happens?

Occasionally, a poorly designed installer makes an incorrect entry in Add/Remove and prevents it from working properly. It could also be malware. Sometimes those entries appear as blank space if it does open.

Most programs don't use much disk space. Exceptions include anything that requires a lot of data, such as language lessons, maps, and that sort of thing. Chances are that the most space is used elsewhere.

Hopefully, you have it all backed up for when the drive fails.

These can help track down used space:

These will allow you to visualize your disk space usage:

Visual Disk
Disk Pie
TreeSize
Xinorbis
AssessTree

Alternatives to Add/Remove:

Comodo Program Manager (removes programs and all remnants. Future installations are monitored so they can be completely removed, restored if uninstalled by mistake, or even restored to a new machine)

Ashampoo Magical Uninstaller (Records changes made to system during new installations)

Ok so I did a system restore on my computer a couple of days ago. I'm currently in the process of trying to get all necessary drivers to get my computer up and running again. After doing some research I've found out that apparently the ATI driver is for an AMD graphics card. I purchased this computer and it came with an AMD graphics card but since then I installed an NVidia graphics card and have updated it to the max. So what's up with this error message? Is there something I'm missing?

A:ATI Control Panel

If you do not have an ATI/AMD graphics cards then you need to go to the "Control Panel" then to either "Add & Remove Programs" or "Programs & Features" depending on which version of Windows you have installed and then uninstall the ATI display drivers & control panel.

If you do a system recovery then the recovery puts the computer back to the original state which had an ATI graphics card, it simply doesn't know or care that you have switched out parts since then.

Please print out and follow the generic instructions for using "SmitfraudFix".(If you have downloaded SmitfraudFix previously, please delete that version and download it again as the tool is frequently updated!)-- If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move smitfraudFix.exe to the root of the system drive (usually C:\), and run it from there. Please download MsnCleaner.zip and save to you Desktop. In addition to removing infected files, it will remove certain restrictions on your system often disabled by malware.Extract (unzip) the file to your desktop. (click here if your not sure how to do this) but DO NOT use it yet.Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8. To do this restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A boot menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".Double-click MsnCleaner.exe to run the tool.Click the "Analyze" button.A report will be created after the scan and will be saved to C:\MsnCleaner.txt.If it finds an infection, click the "Deleted" button.Reboot normally and post the contents of MsnCleaner.txt in your next reply.

I'm helping my husband with this issue, so I might not have all of the details, however, I'll do my best to describe the problem.
1. It started with a pop-up for Spyware.
2. No Control Panel
3. Disabled Norton
4. Installed Spy Sweeper
5. The pop-up stopped, but Still No Control Panel

I know that this problem has previously been solved for other users, but it appears to require a tech person to check various logs unique to the particular computer to insure that the pc is free of all viruses.

Can you help me?

hi, ive got an ati all in wonder 7500. recently tried to upgrade drivers. now i get a message " control panel failed to start. driver not working properly or not found" any ideas to find out which driver or how to fix the problem? drivers are newest catalyst available on ati website. thought they had all included?

A:ati control panel

what do you mean all included? "one-size-fits-all?" If there is an updated driver that says it's for the 7500 all in wonder then I would try deleting the device in the device manager and restart, and install that.

You've probably tried that I know...but I'm just putting it out there depending on what you mean with your last comment.

Download http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Sometime back there was a posts about fine tuning your control panel, you could download all in one download add-ons for control panel, for instance you could click on config, click on cmd, click on whats on your puter, mem, and lot others. I downloaded this and I really like it, very handy. I did a system restore point, well this restore point did not have these add-ons to control panel. I've looked and cannot find this download, but I'm sure I found it here. Does anyone know of or where I can find this download? thanks

A:Control Panel

Hello Rock316, you mentioned you were the administrator before, are you not the administrator now? In order to make changes to your system you will have to be the administrator.
See if this will help. Right-click on Start>Properties, on the Start Menu tab click Customize. Now on the Advanced Tab there is an option to display Control Panel, click Display as a link. Reboot.

There is no "Appearance and Personalization" on my control panel. I need "Appearance and Personalization" on my control panel to download fonts.

A:Control Panel

There are two ways to display the icons in Control Panel, which are "Category view" (the default) & "Classic view" (preferred by experienced users).

The icon you refer to as missing (Appearance & Personalisation) can only be seen in the "Category view". Click "Category view" in the left pane of the Control Panel.

I experienced a problem sometime ago where I kept getting a pop up message informing me that I had a virus and saying click here. This would take me to a page that was linked to the virus. I'm led to believe that the virus was actually generating the message.

I followed a couple of tech guy threads. Eventually the repetitive message disappeared however I do appear to have lost some functionality.

1. My control panel is not available at the start menu.

2. If i double click my clock and calendar I get the following message in a pop up box;

This operation has been cancelled due to retsrcitions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

3. When i click certain links on the web i get the following pop up message

Spybot-S&Ds IE helper has detected an URL that is known as a malicious resource.

URL: http://ad.doubleclick.net/adi/P4542.EBYR2 plus some not visisble in box
Identified as: /DoubleClick

The box has 2 options - allow or deny. the allow option is always greyed out and cannot be accessed. When i choose deny the page often continues to open but not always. This happens nearly all the time on ebay but can even occur on the bbc.

Has anyone got some useful advice,

Thanks

A:Help can't use the control panel

Hi and welcome

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
...
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Hi CBWEB! Welcome to SevenForums! If it's Font's you need that folder address is C:\Windows\Fonts

I don't think that the Control Panel even has an address.

Ok well I have let this problem sly for a bit after removing some malware awhile back ago. Everything seemed fine but the Control Panel. It is disabled for the most part and can't use any of the tools inside it. It tells me "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." This is the only problem that I still have an issue with after the removal of the malware, so I believe a certain something was not removed. Any support? Thanks.
