MSI Installer error (1)1606 - UNC paths for %appdata% ?

Q: MSI Installer error (1)1606 - UNC paths for %appdata% ?

Over at where I work, it looks like a number of unrelated applications have an issue with this when they try to install or configure themselves. I had thought it was a permission issue with non-admin users, but it appears to be related to UNC paths as the
errors no longer get thrown if I map a drive to a UNC share (e.g. N:\ mapped to \\fileserver\user) and change a user's profile to point to that drive path (e.g. N:\Desktop) instead of the UNC path (\\fileserver\user\Desktop). The same location, just mapped
to differently.
I had this problem initially documented here but absolutely nobody seems to have any idea (I've tried all of the commonly pointed
out fixes).
To copy and paste some part of it:

We use UEV to virtualise a user's profile. They log on and then the following mappings occur:

User files for their %homeshare% are stored on a network share, under \\fileserver\home$\username\ (e.g. Documents, Desktop, etc.)User settings for %appdata% are stored on a network share, under \\fileserver\setting$\username\
Each user has access to their own shares on the paths above and have full permissions over their area.

Has anyone got any thoughts or insight into this issue? It is just MSI installers and the errors thrown in the msi logs are to do with permissions or being unable to find the path.
Thanks!

It's really simple, you looked at the Microsoft knowledgebase article 886549 and if any of the items in the table listed DO NOT MATCH what you have in your registry, you just change them.1. Click Start, click Run, type Regedit.exe, and then click OK.2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell FoldersWhen you get to step 2, right click the keyname of User Shell Folders and choose EXPORT. This will export the key as a backup REG file which you can double-click to re-import those settings should anything change for the worse. Now here is what I have when I export the User Shell Folders then open the REG file using Notepad:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Every time I attempt to install a program it will pop up with this error message - Error 1606 %AppData% - . Iv tried comparing my registry to the one provided by Microsoft but both are identical. I've ran their Fix it program- had no effect. Iv scanned my computer - no virus or infected files found. I have done several system restores to earlier dates all of which had no effect on the problem.

I first noticed the problem yesterday while i was installing some CPU over clocking software. Didn't think much of it until i had to have a paper written for college that required the ability to open PDF files. I attempted to download Adobe reader and it gave me the same message as before - Error 1606 - . After reading several different forums talking about Adobe being the problem i uninstalled it, and then attempted to install a game. This also didnt change anything still the same error occurred.

Its been around 8 hours so far of testing and looking but so far. Nothing. My Admin account has also been acting strange now. Firefox will no longer open nor my documents on that account.

Any help or advice would be awesome.

I guess this may be a tiny bit off the subject here, but I am attempting this in windows 7.

I have a program file manager tool called 'Directory Opus' that is capable of calling windows external programs and passing them the current directory the file manager is sitting on.

So far so good.

Now I want to call a cygwin (linux/unix emulator for windows) terminal with that file manager.

Checking properties on the cygwin Icon I got the path: C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -

So it is a path to a command and an argument to that command.

Actually I guess it is 2 arguments to a command since I think '-' in that position means to feed anything on STDIN to the command. At least that would be true in unix shell programming.

So using the Directory opus setup I pass this call:
[email protected]:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - <and here add {s}>'

So the call ends up:
[email protected]:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - {s}'

That call does just what it is supposed to. It passed the current file absolute address however cygwin terminal does not understand the windows path notation. If I were passing it: C:\subdir\blah\ It would just say 'No such file' Cygwin terminal wants to see /cygdrive/c/subdir/blah Or at least I think that is what is happing.

So to cut to the chase.... I'd like to put a little wrapper to Cygwin terminal in there with the code necessary to convert 'C:\subdir\blah\' to '/cygdrive/c/subdir/blah/'

But, I do not know how ... Read more

During the process of setting up and installing programs on new desktop, I accidentally deleted most of the subfolders under APPDATA and wish to know the best approach to recovering. The details below might be important/unique to my situation and hence influence your expert advice. Briefly my mistake had come about when changing the location of various standard folders e.g. My Documents My Music Dekstop from their default location of C:\Users\name\ to a similarly named sub-folder under D:\myname\ In doing the same thing for each of the 3 subfolders (Local LocalLow Roaming) of APPDATA I was unable to redirect APPDATA\Local, and decided to restore the other two subfolders to their default location and it is during that process that I did something that resulted in deleting a great deal of APPDATA.

Resources I had created:
1) Windows System Restore points from just before installing several programs a few weeks ago. (But some internet forum posts indicate that such restore points would not do anything about deleted APPDATA.)

2) Immediately prior to 1 above I made full backups of C drive as well as Image - Clone - ISO file of entire hard drive including D.

This problem has been happening recently,
whenever I try to open appdata folder directly by typing %appdata% by using Windows Logo + Q (or simply type it down after going to....metro menu, that's what it's called?)

stutters my Explorer.exe VERY BADLY, so that I can hardly move my mouse cursor.

Stutter happens only for moment, less than a minute usually, but appdata folder does NOT open.

When I make another attempt to open the folder using same method, folder still does not open, but explorer.exe restarts (probably crashes and automatically starts it again.) and then I can open the appdata folder normally using same method.

After all of these are done, I can open appdata folder with no problem unless I restart the laptop. Or restart explorer.exe before trying to open appdata folder.

I am assuming that one of the program that I've installed recently is causing the problem, but I can't seem to figure it out....

I've searched everywhere in Google, couldn't find an answer but one answer saying about using ShellexViewer to disable any extension attached to Explorer.exe.....but looks like it doesn't do the trick. Halp D:

Error "Could Not Access Network %APPDATA%

This has been a pain. I have tried to install many programs & get this error.

Why don't Microsoft fix this error Or at least a method to correct it that takes a registry hack.

Now I can't use Nokia OVI suit because of the error. All my data on my cell phone is undownloadable!!!

What is the answer??

A:Error "Could Not Access Network %APPDATA%

A couple of questions first:
Have you tried to install your Nokia OVI program by right clicking the installer, and selecting 'Run as Administrator' ? If not try that.
And, can you tell me if you receive any numerical error code such as, 0x80070646, error code: 646, or error code: 1606?
Depending on your error code answer there can be up to three different registry fixes.

This could be a Services, and or a Registry problem, lets work on the Services first.

I need you to check the Network Location Awareness service (NLA) to see if it is set properly, i.e. Started >Automatic:
Copy/Paste Services into your Start >Search box.
You should see Services at the top of the results list, left click on that to open the Services window.
When it opens, scroll down to Network Location Awareness.
Check to make sure it is set to start Automatically, and is started.
Then double check its dependencies and make sure those are started and set to automatic.
To check, and or change the NLA, and its dependencies:
Right click on Network Location Awareness then move down, and left click on properties.
Properties will open to the General tab. If NLA needs to be changed, do it here.
Then left click on the Dependencies Tab.
For every dependency listed you have to find it listed in the Services window, and make sure they are set to started >automatic, this is done on that General tab.
For every change you do make, make sure you click on Apply, and then OK.

When you are satisfied tha... Read more

Hi, my computer runs on Windows Vista. I had Skype installed to my computer, and when I went to sign into it, it asked to install a new version of it. I tried to install the new version, and I kept getting an error that says "Could not access network location %APPDATA%\." I deleted Skype and tried to reinstall it completely, and I still kept getting the same error. I've tried advice in many other forums, and every single time I try something new, it still doesn't work and each time I try to download Skype, I get the same error. Can anyone please help me out with this? I've tried so many things and nothing has worked so far, so hopefully someone out there can help me out.

Hello,

I am running into a problem when trying to update my Java. The website says that I do not have the latest version, so I tried to update. When I did, I got an error message: "Error 1606 Cannot access network location %AppData%\". I tried the offline version, I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling, I tried downloading in IE8 with no add-ons, I have checked some of the registry values (not to familiar with this step), and none of which have worked. I'm not sure if it is useful or not, but my limewire stopped opening, and when I went to FAQ, it said my Java may be corrupt. Please Help!

Thank you very much!

Welcome tatermachine ( got a friend I call "Tater Salad" - drives him nuts!)

There is a way to fix this - you'll have to do some registry editing - go to system restore and set a restore point before you begin the steps.

The steps are here>
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q315352
To resolve this behavior, follow these steps.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
In the right pane of Registry Editor, double-click Common Administrative Tools.
In the Value data box , type the following line, and then click OK:
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools
On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.

Also you wouldn't happen to have Norton on that machine would you?
That could also cause this error.

Norton removal tool>
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Norton-Removal-Tool-Download-26173.html

Hope this helps - and follow the steps closely - print them or write them down - so you can type the correct files in.

A:Error loading C:\users\bernice\appdata\roaming\cctuu.dll

Its not unusual to receive such an error after using specialized fix tools.A "Cannot find...", "Could not run...", "Error loading... or "specific module could not be found" message is usually related to malware that was set to run at startup but has been deleted. Windows is trying to load this file but cannot locate it since the file was mostly likely removed during an anti-virus or anti-malware scan. However, an associated orphaned registry entry remains and is telling Windows to load the file when you boot up. Since the file no longer exists, Windows will display an error message. You need to remove this registry entry so Windows stops searching for the file when it loads. To resolve this, download Autoruns, search for the related entry and then delete it.Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click here if you're not sure how to do this.)Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries. When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message.Right-click on the entry and choose delete.Reboot your computer and see if the startup error returns.I would also post in our Am I Infected forumhttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/There's a bad rootkit infection going around

So, now I am personally no longer infected, but can not, with a similar certainty, say the same for the computer. HI ;I have been trying to install Adobe Acrobat (Versions 5, 6, and 7.0 pro) for the past 2 weeks now. I get the error 1606.could not access network location\Startup at the beginning of install.I have read posts that have suggested deleting, editing, and making changes to my registry and nothing seems to work. I have also tried the Microsoft windows clean up program and other resolutions at http://support.microsoft.com. Also I have checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\... and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\... ,but this problem hasn'd been solved. Can Anyone Help me?thanks

A:Error 1606 In Installation

Open regedit -> (Start - Run - type "regedit") and look for the following entry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office]

On the left side of the rightclick on "Office" and choose "export". You simply save the whole content under that folder into a file (lets say "office.reg") somewhere and then you delete that whole folder. When the Acrobat-installer checks for that registry enty and doesn't find it, it installs without any problems.
After everything is installed, you simply doubleclick on the previously exported office.reg file and thus import the deleted folder again.

Some programs will not install "Error 1606 could not find access network location %APPDATA%Roaming\".

From an earlier thread Error 1606. Could not access network location %APPDATA%\.
on that error I have found that one of the APPDATA keys is set incorrectly and not as in a reply:

Quote:
3. The correct and default value for AppData should be: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming

When I right click to enter a new value, several options appear and I am not sure which to use.

Advice will be much appreciated.

A:An Error 1606 question

Only if you have gone playing around with the regisry or moved the appdata folder yourself, should these values ever be wrong.

Do NOT change them.

First run SFC /SCANNOW
IF SFC indicates that it corrected some problems, then reboot your computer and run sfc agiain and once again reboot.

Let us know the results.

Hi i had a trial copy of Alcohol 120 and decided to get a proper copy, maybe i didnt delete the trial version properly because when i try to install proper version it tells me that i have to uninstall the trial version so i press unisntall and get the message:

ERROR 1606 Could not access network loaction %Userprofile%\Recent\

it then stops installation

I also tried to install an old copy of Discjuggler and am getting the same message.

Any help would be appreciated

A:Error 1606 with Alcohol 120

This may happen due to incorrect registry Value-type for Recent, in the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurentVersion \ Explorer \ User Shell Folders

* Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
* Navigate to the above location
* In the right-pane, double-click Recent and set it's data as follows:

%Userprofile%\Recent

Important: The Value type must be of REG_EXPAND_SZ type. If it is of REG_SZ type, delete Recent, and then create a new value of the correct type.

* Close Regedit and restart Windows.

Hi sbghasemi. After reviewing your log I see no signs of viruses or malware at this time. Your log is clean. If you are getting an error that it cannot start up from a network location do you have access to that network location? You might want to contact Adobe and explain your issue and they should be able to assist you.

Cheers.

I downloaded a free repair which did not work because it uses a 32 bit system and I have 64 bits. Any ideas please? All I want to do is read PDF files.

A:Error 1606 on Vista

Microsoft has a KB article for a similar problem with its own products:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549

In this, it seems that the registry values for several subkeys may be incorrect. In your case, you would want to look at the AppData key from the Vista table and verify that the value is:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming

Hello

I am trying to install a program and can't because of en error that keeps happening. "ERROR 1606. Could not access network location %USERPROFILE%\Recent\." Any suggestions???

A:Solved: Error 1606

Is this happening with just one program or many? Is the install being made off the hard drive or from another location.

If it is a "normal" install being run off the hard drive, typically such errors are due to incorrect registry settings, and you would have to verify yours against those shown here:

I recently got a new computer that runs Windowss 8, my old one had a program called Pinnacle Studio 14 on it and when I tried to download the program again I got all to the final steps of installation then it says "Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid." I tried searching for the path in the regedit but I dont really know how to do it, if thats where the solution even lies. I also thought of flashdriving it over from my old computer but I figured the same problem would arise since I downloaded it the same way on my old computer. I looked all over for an answer but nothing would work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello!

I hope you can help me. The computer I'm using to write my grad thesis(!!) won't connect to the internet because of the error in the title. I used all the suggestions in the forum welcome page (run the specs, HiJackThis, etc) I tried checking other users with similar error displays, but either the threads are closed, or they have no replies, or it's not the same error and I'm not sure if I should try the fixes suggested.

Here is all the information I think you'll need (if not a fair bit extra!) Thanks in advance to any help you can provide, and Happy Holidays!

Guys bear with me, I'm not a computer guy. My wife recieved an email message in Yahoo to upgrade to IE 8. Ever since she did this, I get error messages. I can't use Adobe reader, Can't open Itunes, Google is no longer the default engine etc. The message is "error 1606 could not access network location %Appdata%" I assume that when this update happened, it broke a bunch of links. I'm using Windows XP on a Compaq desktop. A couple of months ago I ran a-squared free anti-spyware. I quarentined what was found and everything seemed
normal. When I turned on the computer the next day the desktop background was changed and some icons were missing, but noticed there was a new icon
on the desktop of a folder labeled %SystemDrive%. My Documents had missing folders so I went to C:\Documents and settings and found them to transfer
them back to My Documents.

I didn't notice anything else wrong until last week I tried to update Adobe Reader and got the Error 1606 Could not access network location
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools\ When trying to install\uninstall programs I
get the same error message. Also the Administrative Tools icon in the Control Panel just clicks but does not open.

Windows XP was installed on a new hard drive a couple of years ago. One fix suggested a problem with using Norton. I have not used Norton
on this computer. I'm running Avira AntiVi Personal. I have used the Microsoft Fit It 50356 "Fix it for me" for Error 1606, and the error message
continues to appear when trying to download Adobe Reader.

I haven't given up yet, because I know someone out there in the BC community has the answer.

Thanks,
smiledesigner

I?ve downloaded the trial of Macromedia Flash 8, and when i execute the installer, an error shows up, the error says: "Error 1606.Could not acces network location %allusersprofile%\startmenu\programs\startup\." but the folder is not bloked to write, so i can?t find a way to solve this problem. i have windows XP (SP2, in spanish). I?ve never had this kind of errors in my life (always with the same PC). I?ve loged in as admin and the error appears too. I don?t have time to choose anything, because first, appears a message of "preparing install", then appears the instalation guide window, and right after, the error message, so i do not choose anything. I?ve tryed renaming the directories, but nothing happens, i think its a system mistake, but it had never happend to me.

Edit: i, have just tryed to install the new version of MSN Messenger (7.5) and the error showed up too!!! Im sure its a system problem.

Hi-

I've been updating some of my computers (the ones that run Vista that I never like to use) and I've been able to update Java on all of them except for one. They are all pretty much the same computer so I'm not sure where to start looking for the problem.

I've googled for the answer, and have used Java help resources online, but the solutions provided on Microsoft and Java sites don't help. I was able to uninstall the previous Java entry, but after that I still couldn't get the newest download to work from online or the download to desktop copy that is offered as an alternative for that error code.

Is there any place I can look next? I did find one log entry, but I don't understand it at all.

You might try the Java Removal tool . . it will usually take out any recalcetrant entries left over from a uninstall.

When trying to install or uninstall programsI get: Error 1606 could not access network location %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools\

Also I am not able to open the Administrative Tools icon in the Control Panel - it just clicks.

A while back after running an anti-spy program, the next time I turned the computer on the desk top
was changed, icons missing, etc. and the %SystemDrive% file folder icon was added to the desktop.

I'm using XP, and ran the Microsoft "Fix it for me" for Error 1606, and a-squared free and malwarebytes anti-malware. Now when I tried to install Adobe Reader, I got either Error 1606 Could not locate network
location %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\Default User, or the one from above.

Thanks for any help,
Smiledesigner

I have been trying to install the newest version of Java. And I keep getting this "Error 1606. Could not access network location %APPDATA%\."

I have been searching the internet and it looks like its some sort of registry problem. I downloaded a register scan/fix program. It found like 600 items, and I let it fix them. Tried to install again, and still get the same error.

This is an annoying problem and the answer is probably really simnple and I am just too aggravated to see it. Whenever I try to access MS Money or install certain things on my computer (MS Media Player) I get an error message 1606 referencing MS Money System Pack and no further explanation. I have read through the registry and don't see anything out of place. I have tried uninstalling, checking the registry to make sure nothing was left behind and then trying to reinstall. I cannot even start installation now because the installation wizard keeps telling me I have to install SYSPACK.MSI for MS Money System Pack before I can install the rest of the program. So I try to install and I get the stupid Error 1606 again. Any ideas???

Whenever I reboot, a screen comes up that says:

Could not load or run 'C:\Users\Ella\AppData\Local\Temp\csrss.exe' specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry.

Recently, I did several things this might be related to, but I am not sure it is is related or not:

1. I downloaded Internet Explorer 9; hated it; and called microsoft tech support to get rid of it and went back to Internet Explorer 8. IE 8 is now working fine.

2. Attempted to download the latest version of VLC Media Player 1.1.9. It took several tries before I got a download to install correctly. At first, I was sent by IE 9/Bing (I suspect Bing highjacked the browser, and took me to outside sites). I think during these attempts I was DLing from SourceForge. When these setup files didn't work, I eventually found the correct site to DL from (videolan.org) That DL worked find, VLC works great, and I simply deleted the other (failed) setup files I had DLed.

3. Did a System Restore back to April 5, 2011 to try to get rid of the error message.

4. Downloaded Periform CCleaner and ran that to try to get rid of any registry errors.

5. Spent approx. 2 hours on the phone with a Microsoft represent in the General Assistance Department. He did the "take control of my computer" thing, and did all sorts of things I didn't really follow. At the end of it, he said it was probably leftover from a virus that my Avira g... Read more

I get the above error when I reboot my computer. Whenever I reboot, a screen comes up that says:

"Could not load or run 'C:\Users\Palmer\AppData\Local\Temp\csrss.exe' specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry."

How do I find and remove the reference to it in my registry?

Welcome texankjo.

Could you explain when this error message pops up? Are you actually able to boot and get to your desktop?

If you can, I suggest you follow the instructions from Posting Instructions for Malware Removal Help and post in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help Forum forum (as I suspect this is a malware issue).

Good day and thank you for reviewing this post.

I have entered the exact error in the subject line. Windows Vista HP 32 bit.

I have researched this error through Google and found LOTS of 'good' answers .... just none that have worked for me. I haveedited the registry, I have searched for and removed an Adobe folder after doing a %appdata$% search .... but I cannot seem to get ANYTHING installed on this machine w/o getting this error.

I am willing to bet I am dealing with some virus issues or residues, but I cannot install any software to help determine this. I have run AVZ4 and let it do its thing, and I have run Vipre and MWB scans on the hard drive when plugged externally into a sata to usb adapter and run from another computer.

I welcome any possible answers to this and will try each as they come to this forum and report back.

Thank you very much.

When I boot up vista I get the above error message saying that it may not be compatible with the version of windows I am running. Check to see if the module is compatible with a 32 or 64 bit version of regsvr32.exe.

What do I do here

A:The Module users/owner/appdata/local\ovrhics/ep0pp01.dll error message

I see you are being helped over at BleepingComputer Forums. They are good so I would listen to what they have to say. It appears you have a bad case of malware and they are by far the best place to obtain help with that.

I just got a new computer and have started to get the message

RunDLL Error Loading C:Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp\cBsQjjij.dll

Does this mean I have a virus? Norton doesn't seem to be picking it up, in fact Norton doesn't appear to be able to finish a scan. What do i do here?

Please help. I'm running Vista and it's a brand new Toshiba laptop.

A:Help Please Rundll Error Loading C:users\username\appdata\local\temp\cbsqjjij.dll

ok so i've just run MAB. It found 9 infected objects, then said it couldn't remove all of them and that i had to restart. Then I started getting two run DLL messages. I'm running it again. Hopefully this will work.
