Monitor goes black but the tower is still on.

Q: Monitor goes black but the tower is still on.

Hi there, i'm having an issue where I would be browsing the web, watching Netflix, playing a game or even just going through files and the computer would just go right to a black screen where the backlit LED lights are still visible and the monitors blue ON glow is still active and I would look over at the PC and it would still be on. All noises from shows id be watching would play then cut out like they were interrupted and when i unplug the video cord and plug it back in all i get is a white static screen then it will usually go back to black backlit screen. I have searched all over to find out the issue that is causing this but i just can't figure it out. I would even hold the power button to restart the PC and the moment it would restart and be back at the home screen it would happen again. Please help!

GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 970

Hi again! so I had this issue before and I had help with someone saying it mightve been the graphics card. Well, I replaced it with a new one and I didnt experience the issue for a few days, but just a half hour ago it happened again, twice. So it's been narrowed down, it isn't the GPU like most of my friends thought, but I have no way of checking if its anything else due to a backup power supply being too low wattage and well that would be about the only other part I have haha. This issue is really causing my anxiety to hit new levels as I just can't figure this out, I have never experienced this before till about the beginning of march, I thought it was driver issues but I went through older and newer ones to no avail, and my monitor is just fine, I have already tested that theory. Could it be the modular power cables attached to the graphics card? Could it be the motherboard failing? My BIOS is also at stock, nothing is overclocked and speccy is reporting everything at normal temps. Please Help!

Motherboard: Asus ROG Maximus Gene VI Z87 chipset

hello there, my desktop PC keeps randomly having the monitor go black with a message coming up saying no signal however this is not all. if i am watching a video it will loop the sound also, so its just turns into an elongated humming noise. does anyone know what to do? i have taken it to a technician he said he took it apart and rebuilt it and left it on for around 2-3 days and this didn't happen. over the course of 10 days he tested what he could and still did'nt know. i got the pc back around 3-4 days ago and it's only just started happening again. i have 7 fans and a big cpu heatsink so im not sure its temperature.

the computer remains on and humming normally throughout all of this. i have tried different hdmi cables also and no difference.

what info would you guys need?

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to computer, ah, specs (or finding information about the one I have)... so I don't have much for you to go on.

Computer is a Dell, with Windows XP Home Edition. Monitor is LCD.

A few days ago (around Wednesday morning) my monitor began to click on and off. The screen would flash black and the light, next to the on/off button, would flash from green (on) to yellow/orange (off). At first it wasn't that bad. When I switched pages on the internet, scrolled, or highlighted something on the page it would flash.
It steadily got worse, going from internet pages to flashing on and off right when I turned the computer on, all through the loading and welcome screens.
I thought maybe it was just the monitor, so I switched it out and hooked up my old hp pavilion mx70 monitor.

That monitor worked perfectly fine with my old tower, but when hooked up to my new one it... Erm, got 'static-y'. It looked like an old TV that had a VHS tape in the player, being re-wound. I know that sounds odd, but it was like spikes from the side of the screen surging inwards. I thought it was because the monitor was so much older than the tower. Soon the static got steadily worse, and I used it for about a day before it got to be too much.

I switched to Safe Mode with Networking on the hp monitor, to see what would happen, and it was fine! No static. Today, I switched back to my LCD monitor and put that into Safe Mode with Networking and no b... Read more

A:Solved: Monitor or Tower problem? Monitor is blinking on and off.

Video card is busted. When in safe mode, the video card's drivers are not loaded, so the card does not function at "full blast". It will not cause trouble because of that.
Dell model would help finding a replacement, but it can well be assumed that there's a PCI-E 16x slot for add-on graphics. This would be a cheap replacement in that case:

This is all an assumption on the most propable cause. The problem could also be your power supply or motherboard, but those are pretty unlikely.

About 6 months ago, i was moving furniture around in my room and whilst moving, my tower fell over and hit my carpet, and the case cracked. Ive been using my older tower for quite some time now. Ive deleted all viruses, spyware, addware...still didnt help. anyways to the point..I tried to hook up my other tower, which is alot better, but whenever i hook it up and turn it on, i get no reaction from the monitor. Ive tried unplugging and replugging it, and the dell symbol shows up on my monitor but then my monitor goes blank. Ive tried hitting f8 many times, but nothing comes up. Can anyone help me? Ive also opened my tower, cleared any dust, and all parts are connected as they should be.

I'm looking to upgrade my dad's computer setup. He has a Gateway with Windows 98 -- all hardware from around '97 or '98. It needs upgraded so I wanted to get something like this new tower, but he wants to keep the same monitor. Will a 10+ year old monitor work with a modern tower?

A:Getting a new tower for old monitor

it will definitely work , it will just look like crap.. its totally worth getting an LCD if what you currently have is an older CRT monitor

A friend recently gave me an old tower of his with Windows XP installed. He did not give me a monitor. I was hoping I could use a VGA monitor cable and be able to plug that cable into my laptop and the tower but I am having difficulties. There is no place for me to "physically" boot up to that tower. Do I need to buy another/different cable to do something like this?

Don't even think about using the laptop screen as the desktop monitor unless you know exactly what you are doing, how the desktop was configured, etc. What you are proposing is having the XP desktop set up like a headless server, connecting the desktop and laptop via a crossover cable (or connecting to a network) then "running" the desktop using remote access from the laptop. Not a simple undertaking.

Buy a cheap used monitor and keyboard for the desktop - it's cheaper than replacing a fried laptop!

A:black screen after i turn my tower to my other computer on.r

If you do not see the message "No Signal" on the monitor screen, very likely it's the monitor itself which is faulty or "dead".To check if it is indeed the monitor which needs replacing, connect it to your laptop if possible (there should be a VGA port on one side of your laptop so you can connect the monitor using the same VGA cable that connects monitor to your PC). If the monitor does not work on your laptop either, you need a new monitor. However, if your tower is not starting up it won't be a faulty monitor. There is something wrong inside the tower. Get someone to check it over, maybe needs a new PSU (Power Supply Unit) which fits inside the tower.Do not rush out to buy a new monitor if the tower is not starting up as the problem will be inside the tower.message edited by phil22

Right now I am really annoyed and fustrated. I have an E machines Winows XP, and it is doing the same thing that it did before I took it into Best Buy. Last time I took it in, I had to wait two months for it, then it didn't work again because something was wrong with the mother board they put in and that cost me two extra weeks. I finally get it back in January and now it is doing the same thing again and I refuse to take it back to Best Buy. This is what it is doing:

The monitor has this window that always shows up and blinks when the tower is not on that says

Apparently, this is pretty much nothing because I can't self check, check PC or see if the monitor is working.
What should happen is when I turn the tower on, this huge white E should show up and the user names whould show up afterwards, but it doesn't.
The tower makes the sound that its on, but the same SELF CHECK window is still blinking as if the monitor never recognized that the tower is on.
I can't do anything with this computer and I would like a simple fix that doesn't cost me three months again and the worry of my C drive being erased because I have important files that I can't back up because the computer won't turn on in the first place.

Please help me.

A:monitor and tower troubles *again*

Hello and Welcome...
Make sure your video connection's aren't loose. Check that where your monitor plugs into the pc hasn't worked loose.. It could also be a bad cable.. If you are comfortable opening up the case and it has a video card (as opposed to the video being intergrated with the motherboard) check that it hasn't come loose as well. If you have access to a different monitor you might try it on your pc also. Something else you can try is resetting the 'CMOS'. While inside the case look for a battery attached to the motherboard. I will look like a large watch battery.. take it out , wait a couple of minutes and then put it back.. If the machine is stuck in a CMOS error this should clear that.

Hi, I just got a pre-built iBuypower gaming PC with a new monitor today and I set up everything and put everything together from VGA to HDMI, but nothing is working. The monitor is still black. The only time the monitor shows something is when I turn it on after a few seconds in which it flashes its logos and goes black and then my power LED for the monitor starts blinking blue. My friends told me that PROBABLY my graphics card is not sending a signal to my monitor (I also tried this on my old computer and it still didn't show anything on the screen at all.) How do I fix this? I don't really know anything about computers THAT much so if you tell me to dissemble can you please tell me how to? I just want my monitor to show something from my tower. My tower is working completely fine. The fans and everything is going and turns on perfectly. It's just that monitor that is not working and I don't know what to do anymore after working on this for 8 hours.

EDIT - I found out it isn't my monitor. Since I tried it with my laptop and it works. It's my PC. Now how do I fix that?

A:New monitor is not showing anything from my new tower.

Why are you using the VGA output? If this is a new PC and monitor they should both have DVI.

Or at least use (DVI to HDMI) or (HDMI to HDMI).

Check in BIOS for a preferred output device setting. Read the manual. Also check monitor for a source select button.

Forgive me if this is a redundant topic but I surfed thru many pages to try and find a similar topic.Got a tower here that I am troubleshooting for my sister.tower would turn on, get to the tower flash screen, then shut back off. So I treplaced the power supply and unplugged the monitor cable from the onboard plug and I tried 2 different video cards, a PCI and an AGP style.all fans and such come on, no strange noises, and no confirmation beeps when it boots. I even yanked the HDD to gain access to it to save some data, but this tower still wont fire up the monitor. I have the orange light right now, and it never goes green.Any clues?Motherboard shot?Looks to be a Biostar MB in a CISNET tower..whatever that is!I can pick up a new MB if that's the problem, but wanted to bounce it off someone in here first.Thank You.

A:Monitor will not fire up from tower

Have you tried to "reset" the bios with the jumper on the motherboard?

It is possible that a BIOS setting is keeping the video from being enumerated at bootup.

Hope this helps,

I have a question about my HP Pavillion. I'm running XP and when I go to start the computer the tower sounds like it's booting up normally however when the monitor is turned on, the indicator light turns green then it automatically, less than 2 seconds later, turns orange..its as if the monitor shuts itself off. Also, the keyboard lights don't flash when the tower is booted up. I tried hooking another monitor up and the same thing happens. I got a tip to try but I really don't know what i'm looking for. I was also told it could be a battery but again, I really don't know. Any help would be *greatly* appreciated. Thanks!

A:Tower Works but No Monitor

Hello and welome to TSG!

First, check the signal cable plug on the monitor do not have missing pins. If the monitor end of the signal cable can also be removed, check that as well.

Next, open the case and see if all your fans are working (the case fan, video card fan, power supply fan, processor fan, etc.)

You could also check to see if your video card is seated correctly in the motherboard.

I hope this helps!

A:TOWER lights up but monitor no signal

You have a few misperceptions on how things work... such as voltage switcher on the power supply. You don't want to mess with the power supply.
Your problem could be power supply, hard drive, video graphics, or memory failure... or some other problem.
You can help us help you by posting your computuer brand and model as well as operating system, age of the unit, memory installed, and type of video graphics.
Further, we would like to know what antivirus software, Antispyware, and rootkit snoopers you have installed.
What was going on with your computer when the power failure hit? As that seems critical.
What was that little round thing? A CMOS battery with the number 2032?

Not sure if i'm in the right place or not so apologies in advance.
I've just bought a new tower with Windows 7 on it and tried installing it today, it's now 12 hours later and i cannot get monitor, keyboard, mouse to work. They were working last night with the old tower. The light comes on the monitor but turns to orange and says No signal.
The buttons on the front don't wnat to work at all i have to use the one at the back and i have no clue what to do next.
I thought it would be a good idea to buy exactly what i wanted but maybe i've made a mistake and should have bought one 'all in'.
Trouble is i'd bought the accessories not too long ago and i was loathe to buy new just for the sake of it.

Restored to a point before update was installed and have not re-installed the update. Seemed to help for a while. Then screen started going black and tower beeping at first when computer was idle but now while we are using it. Took it to computer repair guy who said had viruses and cleaned it up. Was good for about a week then same thing happened again. Took it back to computer guy and he said he couldn't find anything wrong. Now it is getting worse and happening more frequently. Also sometimes explorer stops responding and won't restart, control, alt, delete doesn't do anything. Can anybody help with this before I throw computer in garbage?

The case has both a VGA and Display Port connector, I am presently using the VGA port. I am investigating going for a Dual Monitor setup and am confused whether I can do so without having to purchase a discrete video card. I am reading conflicting reports that some say yes and others no. Can some kind soul please confirm one way or the other ?
I do not use the PC for gaming, it is work only with the occasional video and web browsing. Mainly I need dual monitor for multiple file editing, scripting, database programming etc.
Many thanks, Fin.

Hi Fin,
OptiPlex 790's onboard video solution supports both VGA and DisplayPort at the same time. You can connect two monitors to the computer without adding a discrete card.

Did anything happen to it or did you make any changes to it between the last time it worked OK and the first time it didn't?Do you hear any beeps when you attempt to start it up?Often that symptom is due to a bad PSU or motherboard (not that that narrows it down much).

Bought the following brand new at Best Buy on 8/22/14, and trying to get setup:

Lenovo K450e desktop tower, keyboard, and mouse.
LG 22MP56HQ monitor
MS Office 2013 (key code)
Webroot internet security (disc)
After connecting everything according to the instruction of both the Lenovo and LG instructions, double & triple checking all parts accounted for and connected properly, here's what happened..

Lenovo tower boots up fine, disc drive in tower opens and closes properly, Lenovo keyboard and mouse both detected. Great so far except...

LG monitor does not turn on at all. In the back of the monitor, two things are connected:
blue HDMI connector with pins on both sides is connected to HDMI connection in back of tower.
AC DC adapter plugged into electrical outlet and other end directly into monitor.

Everything works when power booted up except monitor shows no life - no light indicator, and black screen. Monitor just doesn't turn on at all.

There are driver discs for both lenovo win 8.1 and the LG monitor, and like I said, I can insert them into the tower and close, but nothing happens on the monitor display. Best Buy said it should be no issue using the LG monitor with the Lenovo PC tower. They will charge me $100 to come out to my home, even though I bought two year Geek Squad plan, They also said I would still get charged even if they were unable to get me setup.

Seems like there is one probably really easy fix, but I don't want to pay $100 to ... Read more

A:Monitor hooked up to tower, but doesn't turn on

If no standby LED on monitor, is there a separate on/off switch on the side of the monitor?
With LG there are usually manual buttons for CH+- & vol +- plus On/Off (although I have seen monitors with no on/off at all.)
Also check for 'hidden' buttons on the front lower edge of frame or under the front (right) edge.
I would try a different mains lead/cord that is known to to work, also check for a fuse in the plug, could be missing, or isolated with plastic foil.
Even with no inputs the monitor would show a 'No Signal' sign if it was working.
If no 'standby' LED and you have a separate AC to DC adapter block then that could be the problem. All monitors I've seen have a direct AC connection though.
If it then does work, the on-screen menu will need to be selected, and 'input' changed to HDMI.

To me it could be one of three things if you are comfertable going inside the computer try reseating the ram or if there are two sticks take one out and see if it will boot up if not put it back and take out the other stick and try to boot up if it will boot up with just one stick then the other stick is bad. to test the power supply see if your cd or dvd drive will open are there any lights showing? If its none of the above its your motherboard most probably a capicitators blown or something see if you can spot any dark marks like burn marks on the motherboard. Well I hope its the ram.

Hi everyone

I'm new here and have read over some of the posts and stickies but have not found my issue.

I have a Dell 4550, Pentium (R)4 CPU, 2.4 GHz and 2 GB RAM (extra added by me). I have never gotten any kind of warning or message that my tower fan was not working properly.

For the last couple of weeks, I have noticed my computer monitor brightening (a lot) and then darkening (screen is still readable), and then going back to normal. This will happen anywhere from 2 to 6 times in a two hour period.

I have been turning off the computer when not in use, giving it a chance to cool down, which I now realize was the worst thing to do.

Today, when I went to fire it up for about the third time, during the start-up, Windows shut down "to protect itself" and gave me a blue screen message to turn off the computer and restart. I did, and have not had that issue again today.

I have placed a large fan behind the tower and the problem seems to have stopped for now, which leads me to believe the problem is caused by overheating. The tower casing was cleaned inside around 3 months ago, but was very dusty. My questions:

Does this sound like a tower fan problem and how do I check that it is working properly?

Are there capacitors or something else I should be checking for heat damage and replacing?

I know I really just need a new computer, but that won't be happening for a while, so any help you could give me to keep this one sputtering alo... Read more

A:Dell 4550 monitor brightens/darkens - tower overheating?

Hi Jeri, welcome to TS. I'm not sure specifically about the 4550, but I know most Dells will post a warning on boot if the fan isn't working properly. If you haven't seen the message, it's probably not the fan.

If you're up to it (which it sounds like you are if you upgraded the ram yourself), open it up and look if the fan is spinning while the computer's running and also while you're in there dust out the computer, especially the cpu cooler and video card heatsink. While cleaning it out, look at the capacitors on the motherboard and/or video card to make sure they aren't leaking or bulging. A cap should be flat on top, it should not be "pointy" or rounded on top or leaking from the top or bottom. I've seen bad caps on a 4550 before, close to the cpu socket (between the rear ports and cpu), so make sure to look to be sure. You may have to remove the green "air duct" to be able to see the caps on the board.

Also, are you sure the problem is with the computer and not the monitor? It almost sounds like you might be having a problem with the backlighting on the monitor (assuming it's an lcd). Any chance of testing the monitor on another computer to be sure?

I suppose there's always the possibility of a a failing power supply as well. Sometimes when a power supply is flaky (power fluctuations, noise, etc) it can cause weird issues like BSODs among other things. It's possible that y... Read more

Can you see the POST screen to enter back into the BIOS? You may need to go back in with the manual for the PC and make sure everything is properly set. If you used F2 to enter the BIOS, it should work, but you will need to make sure the display setting is supported. If you disable on board video, you will need to get a stand a lone video card to make the change.

So I just recently bought a new Edge Z40 from Velocity Micro.

I have set it up as directed but my monitor, a working HP 2311xi does not detect a signal with tried and tested VGA DVI and HDMI cables.

Unboxed it
Plugged it into an US-EU adapter (I'm in Europe)
Plugged that into a surge protector
Turned on the surge protector
turned rocker switch on the PSU on
Pressed the power button

LEDs light up, fans spin, the HDD vibrates, I put my Windows 8 disk in the optical drive and that spins, the MemOK! LED that signal a compatibility or installation problem with the RAM is NOT lit (no problems), the green LED next to the SATA 6Gb/s port is lit, and everything seems to be working fine.

Next I try plugging connecting my monitor, first with VGA, then DVI, then HDMI, but to no avail (I would try displayport but my monitor does not support it). The cables were secured at both ends, the monitor was on. It showed that it was scanning all 3 possible inputs, but reported "no signal" and went to sleep.

Since then, I tried pushing on all the connections to make sure the power supplies were connected properly, the connection from the video ports to the motherboard were firm, rearranged my two 4GB DDR3s, and tried using a step-down transformer with the 110V setting on the PSU rather than an adapter with the 230V setting.

Also, I'm not sure if this was initially there, but when I turn on the computer, after a few seconds I hear a short high-pitched 'blip... Read more

hi, I am going to upgrade my graphic card to ATI 5770 so I need a new power supply which has power about 550--600 watt. But the most frustrating problem is that I failed to find a proper power supply with the correct dimension.
I have an HP pavilion e9300 which uses a very wired power supply tower-150mm(W) 86(H) 140(D). But so far all the PSUs I found is the standard size --150mm(W) 86(H) 150(D) which cannot fit in my setup.

So could any PC God give me some suggestion, please??
Is any PSU with the size of my tower or can I just simply install a bigger PSU which can still successfully power up the comptuer?

Thx in adance.

A:Power supply bigger than the tower - frustrated by HP PSU tower

If the power supply will physically fit your case, it should work fine with your computer. Will the extra 10mm interfere internally with anything inside the PC?

I had to switch monitors and video cards both when the old monitor broke, which was working perfectly, it was 1650 by 1080 max resolution. This new monitor is 1080p, wide screen. 1920 by 1080.

The old AMD card was x1650, the new video card is Gt610.

This new Westnghouse Tv - monitor combo, an LD2240 has terrible text colors. Instead of all black it just randomly throws up colored text. If I zoom the screen the text reverts to all black, If I zoom out the screen, the text goes to a mix of black, red, blue letters. If I do a full zoom out, black text looks like a lit up Christmas tree of colors.

I am using an HDMI cable and Nvidia 368 driver.

Here is a picture taken with a cell phone. If I shared a screen shot, you will see normal colors.

Will getting an DVI to HDMI adapter help? The monitor TV only has VGA and HDMI, no DVI input.

If I change from 1080p to 1080i, the text color issue is solved, but the text is not as sharp.

A:LED monitor displays black text as mix of red, black, blue

You're sure that the monitor supports 1080p not 1080i? I ask because some TV's only support up to 1080i.

Based on what you've said and are showing us, I think this might be the case. Judging from that picture, that TV does not like 1080p.

Although I just checked the model out online and the literature all says 1080p. Is there a setting on the TV that allows you to switch between 1080i and 1080p? Or does it do it automatically?

Edit again:

I just went through the instruction book, and nowhere does it say 1080p. Something you could try is going into the PC settings and adjusting the clock and the phase controls. It may help, or it may only apply to the TV's VGA connector, I don't know.

Hi, I have windows home 7, home built pc with Asus motherboard. Don't ask me further spec details cuz I have no idea about most of the specs (an ex built it and can't get in control panel due to monitor issue). I just know that it's supposed to be kick-*** with a 5.8 windows score.

The PC boots fine, gives you the option to start windows normally or leave it do its' thing... but either way I try, it makes no difference to monitor.
When it boots, the monitor shows all the usual details, the bios pic, starting... and as soon as it reaches desktop point (I think), it goes black even though monitor is still powered and no errors about no signal. If I turn monitor off and on, it will quickly show me the desktop then it goes black again.

I'd appreciate any help or insight.

A:Monitor black but turning monitor off/on flashes desktop for split second

Hi, first thing I would try is to connect the PC to another monitor that is known to be in good working order. If the same problem occurs then we will know it is a problem with the PC, if it functions normally you will know it is a problem with your monitor.

I have a dual monitor set up through HDMI. My laptop works just fine but the second monitor went black during a gaming session and hasn't worked since. I have restarted, verified its on HDMI setting, updated drivers, checked refresh rates.

The Second monitor is still connected. I can move things there (cant see it) because it is black. When I right click and click screen resolution I can see the screen pop up.

I think the color scheme may have changed during the gaming session and that might be the culprit. It was an old game - 2009

I have Windows 7.

I need some help. I have acomputer monitor that is roughly 10 years old. THe monitor last night decided to suddenly turn off and the power button started blinking. I unplugged the power to the monitor and let it sit overnight. This morning I went and plugged the power back into the monitor and pressed the power button on it. When I pressed the power button the button started blinking again. I have never had a monitor die like this and I would like to know why it died and if it can be fixed. Some more info is that i had only been on the computer for less than 2 hours. I have not spilled anything on the computer, the vent is completely uncovered, and the computer is in good working conditions according to the mannual. I need to know asap please. The tower still works perfectly fine it is only the monitor.

A:Monitor is black and the power button on the monitor is blinking

If you could try the monitor on another PC, that would confirm the monitor is faulty. In any case if the monitor is bad and considering its age, it would be best to just replace it. It would not be worth fixing.

I have been running a dual monitor setup for several years without issue. I was using a 28" Hanns G 16:10 1920x1200 via HDMI & an ASUS 27" via DVI. They were connected to a Zotac GTX 570 and then later to a Gigabyte GTX 770 4GB graphics card.

About a month ago I substituted a 30 Inch Monoprice 16:10 2560x 1600 monitor connected via DVI for the Asus monitor (both MP & HG still connected to GTX 770). In the last two days, the Monoprice monitor has gone black twice. When this happens, all programs that were visible on the now black monitor combine with the programs on the visible monitor. When I open up the control panel, it only lists the Hanns G (still visible) monitor as detected and the Monoprice (black) monitor has to be re-detected. After clicking on "Detect" the monitor returns to normal. This happened once while gaming (Left 4 Dead 2) and once when I wasn't gaming...can't remember exactly what programs were open at that time.

I updated my graphics driver between the time it first happened and the second time it happened. I also used device manager to see if there was an available monitor driver update available, but windows claims that the most current driver is installed and that the graphics card and both monitors are working properly.

I would really appreciate any assistance that can be offered. The 30 inch monitor wasn't cheap and I am hoping that the monitor is not the issue. I have not yet done any trial and error measures such as ... Read more

Hi all.

So, I just got a spiffy new monitor from (a debranded HP w2338h). Gorgeous, works great when it's all by its lonesome. Not even a dead pixel!

However, when I try to hook it up at the same time as my old HP vs17 (which also works great by itself), it goes black, says "no input signal," and goes to sleep. I'm using a Radeon 4670 HD. Brand new drivers, Hydravision installed. Windows 7 64-bit.

Catalyst detects both the monitors, offering an extended desktop, and when I move my mouse off the side of the vs17, it disappears and takes time to return, indicating that the computer thinks the screen is still on and is moving the mouse all over this expanse of screen real estate.

Also, when I boot up, both monitors show the boot-up screen just fine, up through the Windows logo load.

Tried switching the cables on the video card, no luck.

Any ideas?

A:Monitor went black

Well if you don't hear the computer start up, there's a problem in the computer itself, not the monitor. When you say hear it startup, what did you hear that you're no longer hearing? Power supply fan, POST confirmation beep, Windows startup sound? Do any power lights come on? If not, have you checked if there is a master power switch on the back of the computer that has been bumped off, or the mains plug come loose in the socket? What brand and model is the computer?

My problem is that after a while (time varies) of use on the computer my second monitor has started blinking and then going black. I have a ati 6950 graphics card with 2 slots for monitors.

Now the weird thing is you would think that it is either
A) a problem with the monitor itself
B) the second output on the card is going bad

well when i try hooking up my monitor that works to the slot that does not work nothing shows up, its like the monitor is in sleep mode

But when i hook the monitor that goes blank to the slot that always works for the other monitor, it also does not work.

having both of those things happen, it leads me to think its possibly drivers? so as im typing right now im downloading new graphics drivers, (i was only 1 version behind, but who knows ati's drivers tend to corrupt from time to time.)

any help or things i should try would be awesome. thanks in advance

Please Help. I can't find anything but the problem is bizarre and only occurs when starting up normally. My monitor never goes black in "Safe Mode" and the monitor works perfectly when attached to another computer.

When I start up my computer normally the monitor will be fine for the first 10 minutes or so and then the system starts to freeze temporarily and then right after the monitor will go black for a couple of seconds. The problem becomes increasingly worse over the next 10 minutes when the monitor becomes permanently lost by the computer and I am no longer able to see what my computer is doing until I turn it off and reboot starting the above process all over again.
Here are the specs for my computer:

Well i have a NEC Multisync LCD1920NX and some serious problems with it.
it went fine for quite a half of a year but then the trouble began.

if there should be black color there is a kind of black-green( one black line , 1 green line , ... ) . it also occurs with other video cards so im quite sure the monitor is guilty. the "funny" thing is that this is not an alltime effect . it happens randomly. it started with only once a few days and it could be resolved by doing auto-contrast or auto-resize. that does not work anymore. now im happy if i get a moment with normal colors :/

i even tried to look inside and checked a few cables but im not very expert with that. in fact checking the cable connections was all i could do.

hope anyone couldgive me a hint correcting this.
and excuse my bad english plz

A:it should be black ...[monitor]

I have the same problem, except it comes on has been suggested the blue gun needs repair, but new monitors are tamper proof as I understand it, with good reason, you can be zapped with over 50K volts if touching wrong spot, nope, not prudent.

My workaround is to leave the monitor on all the time. Just reread your post and noticed it is an LCD, don't know if above advice is valid. Still, if you turn it off, try not doing so, couldn't hurt.

Does it do this while machine is powered up? Will snoop around, see if I can find you an answer or someone with more knowledge than I (I know, hard to envision, but is possible, hehe) will come along and give you a better answer.

for if you can not modify it then there is not much we can do to help you for to update it you will have to install updates to programs / drivers / and may have to make adjustments to the software & your system to get it to work & connect , that is why some companies set there hardware up so that they will be in control and limet the control that the users have

how much control do you have ?? or are you highly limeted !!

I am working on a Dell Latitude D610 laptop. The issue being the monitor would randomly go black during BIOS, it works fine with an external monitor, so I figured it was the inverter. I bought and replaced it, now it stays on longer but still goes black, unless I hold the button down that tells the laptop the screen is closed for a few seconds then release, after that it will either go black again, or stay on for indefinitely until a reboot then the problem repeats itself. Is this a monitor issue or a problem with the close button itself? Thanks for any help!

Hello, once again I am asking your help because some strange bs thing happened that makes me go bananas and to be honest I've never seen stuff like this at no one. So the problems is the following:

I bought a new headphone yesterday ( my older one died ) I tested it at the store at the clerks PC to see if it sounds how I want it and it is balanced for what I need it for ( I'm a music producer ) it was all good and obviously I bought the headphones. My problem started after I got home and plugged my headphones in to my MAIN sound board ( the onboard card is disabled from bios ) and my monitor ( a Horizon ) just went blank.I plugged a bunch of headphones while the pc was on,the same thing did the clerk at the shop so I can test it out and nothing like this happened but now for some unknown reason my screen started flickering, going blank from 30 to 30 seconds and only after I powered off and on the monitor it started " working " for a few seconds and then again going off until I switched it on and off. Now here is another info, my monitor has build in speakers BUT the cable from it was plugged in the onboard sound card which was DISABLED and so were the speakers from the monitor ( I plugged it in so it won't hang loose a few years ago )
What could be the problem? What connection could there be between me plugging in the headphones and my LCD going nuts even though the other soundcard is on disable. My first answer was some kind of " shortage " but it doesn't ... Read more

A:Monitor keeps going black after ...

Disabled or not metal touching metal is contacting each other. Maybe when you plugged it in it spiked through the back panel of the system (I/O shield) sounds crazy but could theoretically happen. What headphones, maybe they tried to pull to much power (High impedance?) causing the issue. Try re-plugging in the monitor cable and unplug the speakers from the disabled port.

So I'm running Vista on an emachines desktop. I have an emachines E19T6W 19" monitor. It has worked perfectly for over a year, but today in the middle of working, the monitor just turned black and stayed black. The power light on the monitor remained blue for on, but it remains black. I felt the monitor and it was kinda hot so I turned the computer and monitor both off for about an hour and restarted them. The monitor shows the Windows starting dialog up until explorer loads (so desktop and taskbar, etc) and then it turns black. If I turn the monitor off and on again, there is about a 1-second period where it works fine, then it goes black again.

Does anybody know what the problem would be, and how would I go about solving this?

A:Monitor goes black

Welcome to TSG.

I realize not everyone has the option but if possible, try your computer with another monitor and try your monitor with another computer. If you can do one or both of those, that might aim you in the right direction. It could be that your monitor is starting to fail but that`s just something to keep in mind and will become obviously apparent if that`s the case.

A few questions that might help you and / or us ...

Do you get the same result in safe mode?
Are you running the correct and up to date driver?
Have you fiddled with the desktop res settings?
Have you recently installed any desktop related items such as `pets` or a screensaver of some sort?

Hello when I woke up this morning I started up my computer and the 2ND monitor was black, it would also randomly start flickering yesterday. I have updated my drivers. When I unplug and then plug in my HDMI cable it flashes my screen saver then goes black. My settings/menu buttons also do not show up on the black. The Monitor is 4-6 years old. I can also use Gyazo to take a picture of my second monitor and see everything I put on it.

A:2ND monitor is black

Right, you can still use print screen or whatever to take a pic of your setup and both monitors will show up. Windows still thinks you have 2 good monitors, but it sounds like the 2nd one is shot. Flickering is a tell tale sign it`s dieing, most likely.

Try to test it on another pc.

Hi there.

I have a strange issue. I installed W10 recently and everything works fine now. However, I found something pretty strange in my screen monitor. The problem is last horizontal lines are in pure black ? just as if there wasn't anything. For example, when you minimize a window, it displays in the Windows bar with a blue/cyan line. In my case, I cannot see that. It is very uncomfortable when watching a movie in fullscreen mode, for instance. Nevertheless, if I take a screenshot, it displays that part of the image perfectly.

I suspect it is a problem of drivers. However, I have my Nvidia card updated...

My monitor is: Acer AL1916W. It is connected via VGA.

My monitor is blacking out on me while its still on. This has been happening for about a month now. This has happened before, and we got it fixed by sending it to the company to get it fixed. Since this is happening again I don't want to send the monitor again. I can not find out the solution to this. The monitor goes black usually when i start up the monitor and I press the on/off button on the monitor to see the screen again. I have to keep doing this for about 3-5 times til it stays on permanently until I shut it down and use it again.

My monitor is a Sceptre flat screen. I have a Nvidia Gefore 6800 graphics card.

Thanks for the help.

Hi and welcome, Just might be time for a new monitor

If you can test it on another computer, that would be great, that would rule out the video card, but since you said sending it in for repairs fixed it the last time, it's probably the same problem Look on the bright side though, monitors are really cheap now Might be time to pick yourself up a nice 19" LCD for $100

Hi. So I'm sorta new at all this and I was wondering if there was a problem with my computer or if my monitor just has blown fuses. Occasionally (2 to 4 times a week) after logging on my monitor blacks out and it will automatically restart. If it doesn't restart and you push the button the monitor to turn the screen back on it will refuse to turn back on and will eventually restart after pressing the button about eight or nine times. Is this a virus problem or just the monitor?

Much thanks

A:Monitor Black Out

Sounds like the monitor, do you have another monitor to test? Also, can you test that monitor on another computer?

A:Monitor went Black

unplug the computer for 10 secs, the plug it back in and attempt to start it. if the machine won't start up you'll need to take it to a loacl pc repair shop or have a technician look at it. some basic questions:

what, if anything, has changed before the problem occured and at what time relevant to the failure.

Which are about 1/2" wide. You can see whats on the monitor through
these lines. But unable to do anything. We tryed the buttons on monitor and checked all cables etc.
Don't know what to do now.
Can anyone give me any info?

A:Monitor black

first of all if its crt (really fat in the back) then make sure no magnets are around it.
there are two major possiblities ur monitor is messed up or the computers video card is.
1.test the monitor on another computer, if it worx ur monitor is fine and u have more expensive problems
2. if it still doesnt work then the monitor is most likely fried.

I dont know of anyone that repairs monitors but someone probably does. im guessin ur filter has been messed up. its not an ordinary filter so u cant replace it or anything like that.
Best thing to do is get a new monitor.
If its Lcd (small all the way around) then there are other possiblities. always test it on another computer. test it and write back then we'll see wut happens

Hi, i have bought a Diamond Stealth Radeon 9250 256mb PCI graphics card.
After i disabled my onboard graphics card , just like the manual said, i connected my samsung syncmaster 700df monitor ( i know it sucks :[ ) to my graphics card, but when i turned on my computer , my monitor was black, but my computer was running fine. When i connected the monitor back to my onboard it turned back on.

I am not really sure what the problem is.. I am sure I have everything for the system require for the graphics card EXCEPT super vga compatible or dvi-i compatible which i do not what it means.

I would really like help :]... Thank you
-------- Edit --------

I would like to know how to find out if your monitor is super vga compatible or not..

Did you install the Daimond Stealth's drivers? You probably have to lower or raise the vertical refresh rate

Home built system with win xp/sp-3....System was running fine all day & night. I shut the system down for the night and went to turn on the next day and now I have nothing at all come up on the screen. Here is what I have done already.

1)I thought that it might be a video card issue so I swapped pci-E slots and still nothing.
2)Purchased another pci-e video card and tried that, same results, blank screen
3)removed video card and tried to boot, nothing, blank screen

MB does not have onboard video so I cannot try that although at this point I do not think that it is a video problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you

I have a networked HP computer with XP Pro, service pack 3 with a Samsung Syncmaster 920nw monitor.

As soon as the computer is turned on the monitor comes on for about a second, then goes black. If you turn the monitor off, then back on again it works again for about a second before going to black again.

The power light stays solid blue (if the computer goes to sleep or is turned off it blinks.) It logs into Windows fine, even though it's a pain to do even that because you have to shut the monitor off & turn it back on repeatedly to do anything, and gives no error messages or anything like that. Power-saver is set to never turn monitor off or go to sleep (that seemed to work for a few hours yesterday even though it doesn't seem to be the problem since it's going off after mere seconds instead of minutes or hours, but today it's not working again.)

I've checked connections & they're fine.

Any ideas what might be causing it?

A:Monitor Going Black

Tried the monitor on another computer to see if the trouble follows? That way you can rule out that it's the monitor and not within the machine. In other words isolate the condition to either the monitor or computer.

I was working happily away in Photoshop this morning when I started having this problem, and it seems to be progressing throughout the day. All of the sudden my monitor went black, and then came back again. At first it was just doing it every once in a while now it seems to be doing it every time I try to do something. The green light on the monitor USUALLY stays green, but then every once in a while when the monitor flickers to black the monitor goes to stand by. It seems to not only be doing it whenever it feels like now but also when I click on the start button, when I change windows, and sometimes even when I hit 'enter'.

I'm a bit worried that it might be my graphics card. The thing is we just replaced the stinking graphics card maybe a year ago and we certainly didn't pay for a disposable one!

Oh, I almost forgot. One time when I restarted my computer it said something about overclocking failing, but it hasn't done it since then. I don't even know what overclocking is! It's not something I've told it to do anyways.

I'm wondering if my CPU is running a too hot too...I think it said something about being 78 degrees Celcius.

Ok that was just flickered on and off like ten times in a row. My window title bars seem to keep turning black now too.

I'm running Windows XP, this scan thing I did says I have an Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40GHz, I've got 3 GIG of RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE.

Hello everyone!

I'm having a problem that I cannot understand at all with my old Acer AL1916W monitor.
As I turn on the screen it shows whatever it is recieving for about one second, then goes black, but still getting the signal. The only thing that makes it show anything again is to turn it of, then on again and the same thing happens. (It shows what it's recieving for a second and goes back to black)

It has not shown any messages of not recieving a signal, but the screen stays black. I can't even use the monitors own menu, since that is blacked out too.

I don't wan't to replace it (though that's what I think must be done in the end), so I had to post it here for all of you, who know much more than I do!

Here's what I've tried so far with no luck (the same problem in every scenario):
changed port on GFX
Changed cable
Tried connecting it to another GFX, the onboard port and another PC
Tried disconnecting power to monitor (and holding the power button) before retry

Thanks for your time!

Hi all,
my roommate is having a monitor problem. it will be working OK, then the monitor gives the "no signal" message. He has opened the case and re-seated properly the video card. I am going to go over to my storage space tomorrow and get a monitor, so we can switch them out and see if the new monitor works OK.
Any suggestions on how to proceed, other than trying other monitor?

Ok heres my problem... Whenever I play a game thats requires some power, my monitor turns black or the game freezes anywhere from 5-60min after I start playing. I have no choice but to reset by hitting the button when this happens. When the screen goes black there is no sound in the background and the light on the monitor is still green. This all started since I upgraded my CPU and MB from a AMD 700MHz to a AMD 2400+ processor using the same Video Card.

I downloaded all the latest drivers for the vid card, got the latest direct x, the latest bios version, latest 4in1 drivers, all the windows XP updates. Still non of this helped the problem.

I then considered that I had a heat problem with my video card so I installed a VGA cooler (card wasnt even close to hot after this, it was just warm) and it still happened.

Ive tried changing the refresh rates in my monitor, resolutions, various video options (antialiasing, fastwrite, AGP Mode, aperature size, etc) with no luck. Ive tried using different video drivers for nvidia (omega, etc). I still got an old Gateway ev910 monitor im using but I doubt its the monitor since the sound stops when it goes black. I found drivers for the monitor but the wizard wont install them because it says It couldnt find a better match for my hardware than the default one I had installed. Ive tried checking the RAM for errors, non found.

Im all out of ideas on this one please help if you can and post any ideas.

My monitor started fading--not changing colors. It got so dark I could hardly read it. My husband replaced the video card. It's a PCI Radeon 9250 with 128MB. The monitor got better but got dark again. We hooked up our 1999 monitor and tried it. Both the old card and the new card was tried on both monitors and didn't get normal brightness. Currently, however, the original integrated motherboard card is working fine on this 1999 monitor. Can't figure out if there's a monitor or video card problem. In BIOS it looked as thought it recognized the PCI card. I didn't see anything that would let me turn off the older video card. I'm afraid to change monitors or do anything fearing I might get a black screen again. Thanks for your help.

Hi all,
i am here today because I am in need of serious help. I recently bought a new computer with a sceptre x22 lcd monitor. When i first started to use my computer my monitor would go black once in a while, in fact it didn't turn totally black since i could barely see the clear areas such as the taskbar etc. Now since then it started to happen frequently, and today i was playing a game online and it would happen every damn 15 seconds. Now take note that turning off and on the monitor normally temporarily puts my computer back on track. Right now I am plugged on my old lcd and everything is going right. For the lcd i tried vga and dvi, both didn't work. Now I think my video card is not totally inserted in the pci express (one side must be 1 or 2 mm out), because the case just won't permit it, the video card is too big or I don't know what. Now since I changed monitors and the problem is gone, i guess the problem is not the video card.
Please help! Thanks

I purchased a Dell XPS notebook Aug 2005. I am having problems with my screen. When I boot up the black background behind Dell displays vertical rows of blue dots all the way across screen. Then when it show the Window's screen booting up, it displays vertical rows of green dots. Right before the Wiindow screen changes, it show all different colors then entire screen is black. I can hear it in the background so it is booting up. I called Dell (hard to get service on a Sunday) and one person says I need the LCD replaced. Yesterday one said the motherboard. I'm a little confused because I am running in safe mode right now and the screen works fine. Has anyone had this occur. I'd like to figure out before they come out and replace my screen and that's not the problem. I'm looking at about $700 to have them come to my office!!! Also, why are their parts going out so soon??? My laptop has sat on my desk for 2 years!

Here are my specs:
Inspiron XPS-Gen2, Pentium M 770, 17", I GB, DDR2,533MHz 2 Dimm, 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra, 80GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive

Thanks in advance,

A:Black monitor

If the display is corrupt before booting into WIndows, then it has nothing to do with any drivers. A bad video controller or memory and the only cure is motherboard replacement.

You don't sound like someone able to replace the LCD or motherboard anyway, so you should just take the machine to a (Dell) repair shop and let them figure out what is broken and what to replace.

Ask for a price estimate first. It may be cheaper to get a new laptop
