Hi there

We have this machine running on Windows 8.1 that have an issue with spacing due to the Windows.edb can grow up to 30 GB space.

We know how to fix it temporarily by shutting down the Wsearch service and delete that windows.edb file. We've noticed that this symptoms happened when the machine is offsite. This machine has a File History backup that backing into NAS at office.

We also had a look on the following KB - and nothing specifically about Windows 8.1 and we did apply the KB 2836988 and applied and it didn't work due to Windows 8.1 NOT 8.0 RT.

I'm appreciated your feedback.

Hello everyone!

Yesterday I purchased a Lenovo G580 running a Windows 8(x64) as a present for my little sister. But before presenting it to her on January 26, I decided to check it and install some things she'd need.
First boot already showed a problem: the WiFi module sees all available networks, connects to my home network, BUT the internet does not work (it did work on my desktop and two other laptops). I spent a lot of time reading this forum and googling the problem and discussing the topic on the lenovo forums. I tried pinging websites, and sometimes the ping went through, sometimes not. I also tried transfering files from my desktop to the G580 through the Windows home network and the speed was awfully slow. Here is what I have tried:

Reinstalling the drivers for the atheros/broadcom module (I have the Atheros AR9485WB-EG), older versions and latest version
Reinstalling Energy Management
Reinstalling chipset drivers (though not sure if they actually were reinstalled)
Installing Lenovo ReadyComm
Tried to uninstall MacAfee, but it wasnt installed in the first place, just a folder on the desktop for setup
Turning on/off all netwrok modules (LAN and blutooth)
Unchecked the box that allows the system to turn off the wifi module to save power !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reinstalled the firmware on my router (tried both manufarcturer's and custom)
Tried unsecure (without password) connection
Tried to connect to other known WiFi networks without lu... Read more

If I was you, I would remove all the useless preinstalled bloatware that Lenovo so kindly installed for you, especially the trial version of which ever anti virus they installed for you.

But first try running the following two commands "in bold" copy paste them one at a time into an elevated command prompt, hit enter after each one then reboot the machine. This will sometimes fix the problem where it's showing as connected but you can't seem to go anywhere using a browser.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

Any type of preinstalled Virtual machines or VM ware like Hamachi should also be disabled. You should also disable the Msoft Virtual WiFi mini port adaptor which should be showing up in Device Manager under Network adaptors.

After that "assuming you have a connection" you should visit the Windows update center.

If you are still having problems after that, please post the ipconfig/all from this machine.

I'll expect my check in the mail from Lenovo.

I noticed my C: almost filled up so I used my handy WinDirstat to figure out what happened. It looks like 10 days ago a huge file was created in my c:\windows directory. The filename looks like some HEX registry key of some sort. The curly braces are actually in the filename. I did some quick googling and didn't see anything like this. Any ideas what this could be? I tried moving it to my D: but the file is in use by "System". I'm currently at 3GB free out of 150, so I really need to clear this file out if it is not needed. I thought maybe it might be some corrupted swap file, but I have mine set to my D:

I experience a wery odd and worrying pattern on my computer and its win XP Sp3

Every time i have reinstalled windows (yesterdays latest) the last 3 occasions the computer seem to have choosed out one of my largest sized and most popular folders on eatch harddrive i have other than the C:\ and makes them sluggish and slow browsing in the new installation,
which means it must read havey and hangup for 20 seconds before it can release open!!! the folder, once inside thou the moore you klick back-forward the moore the sick folder will learn to open faster next time, but only for a while, after complete closedown it have gone back to megaslow again

These 3 folders are now spreaded out on 3 out of 4 secondary drives and thei have become permanent slowed, one by one in row allways on sepparate drives, an odd coincedence, the slowdown lives on to next installation once its occured, and the disease absolutley occured only after windows reinstall on all 3 drivers, its mixed folders with both pics and moviefiles we talk about
I have tested to manually sett all the subfolders to show "list" instead of deafult "thumbs" but it never helps so we can exclude sush tip here, and i have allso tested to defrag the drives and it doesnt help either, it speeds up all other folderviewings exept this 3 folders..offcorse

I have tested to instead create a new folder and dumped same content inside if now the folder is perhaps corrupted, and then it shows classic signs of slowdow... Read more

Hi, Everyone - I occasionally have to share a large file between one person and another for work. I was using 'yousendit' which worked fine. they have changed to be 'hightail,' and they have a blog - at their blog, there are many comments circa oct 2013 about it now not working, and being buggy. So, I don't want to go with that.

I am looking for current suggestions of a site for file sharing. I am willing to pay a modest fee/month, like $10, to know it will work well and not junk up anyone's computer with any trashy downloader, and is very simple to use - I cannot spend a lot of time teaching people with various levels of web savvy and computer savvy how to make an acct, log in, work some elaborate, "unique" interface, and so on.

I would prefer a service where an email goes to the recipient's email address, they click on the link, and from that, easily select an option to download.

I am not sharing burned CDs or DVDs - I just need to share work-related audio recordings from the person recording to a transcriber.

When I look at reviews on the web, it seems that services change a lot over time, so I don't want to go for what had great reviews a year ago.

Please help with suggestions! -Thanks!

I have just received a running out of system disk memory notice on my Windows XP desktop computer. I was a bit surprised because I don't store much on the system disk, and as part of an exercise discussed on another thread here I had recently cleaned it up. I ran a scan with AVG free which came up with nothing and also Spybot S&D which cleaned out as many temp files as it could. After this I noticed one very large "hidden" folder remaining in the temp folder. It was called ~eu0000. In it was a single file called .eunf.
I have a dual boot so I could probably quite easily delete the folder and file, but before doing so I am curious as to whether it might have been caused by malware.

The composite image above shows the location of files on my very full system drive, as well as the results of the AVG scan.

This image shows the Windows temp folder (after the S&D cleanup) containing the offending large folder.
I should appreciate any thoughts anyone has on this.

Hi all, thanks in advance for reading! I've been experiencing these issues since I began my foray into Windows 7 over a week ago. Before I describe the issues, here's my system's stats:

Asus P5N-D
2x2gb Corsair xms2 DDR2 800 @ stock
C2D E8400 @ stock
nvidia geforce 8800 gts
1 x WD Raptor 37gb sata
1 x WD Caviar 250gb sata
2 x Samsung Spinpoint F1 750gb sata

During large file operations (moving, copying/pasting etc) between HDD's of items (single files or groups of files and folders, and from the Caviar to either Samsung) exceeding several gb's worth, the system would hard lock - no mouse/keyboard, all visual progress halted, no visual HDD activity. If left alone, the system would very intermittently flash a black display and return to the frozen desktop display, eventually winking out to a total lack of display output altogether.

Upon soft reboot, the destination HDD has been dropped from BIOS, boot menu, etc. Boot hangs at midpoint during the splash.

Hard power-cycling yields the HDD reappearing and Windows starts without issues.

What I've done so far:
-Disconnected destination HDD and tried the other spinpoint, same result.
-Diag'd all HDD's with manufacturers' tools, all pass.
-Flashed BIOS to most recent update, no change.
-Swapped out the WD Raptor for a freshly unboxed WD 640gb Caviar Black. Clean installed W7 x64 after format etc and did NOTHING (this means installed no drivers, no programs, nada) but attempt the file operations after first startup post-install. S... Read more

Hi all,

I have a really big issue with one of my computer when copying large file (about more than 1GB).

When I copy a large file, 10GB for instance, after the time calcution for copy, the copy begins but the progress bar never goes after 1%. Even if I let the copy working all the night, the status stays the same. I have this issue if I copy a file from a folder to another one or if I copy it from my computer to an external hard drive (both NTFS).

I have another computer with Windows 7 Enterprise which does not have this kind of problem.

Could you help me on this issue?

Thank you very much

Does anyone know where these files are located and the format they are in? I am assuming that I need to convert them to something else so that I can split and burn them, but cannot figure out where the files are.

Thanks -

I have problem with Windows 7 folder/file listing behavior.
I 'appliy to folders' to my liking(view -> details) but Windows 7 keep changing its file listing to certain folders.
for example.. currently listed with columns
Name | Date modified | Type | Size (+ other options.. applied to all folders)

BUT if 1 folder has too many MP3/Video file(or any type of 1 similar file types) Folder setting reconfigs itself to something like this
Name | # | Title | Cont. artists | Album (it also changed initial 'sort by' & 'group by' settings. it actually removed/unchecked those settings.)

Forgot to mention that these *changed itself* folders were initially displayed correctly.
is there any way to fix this problem?
Thanks in advance. (sorry about ninja edit)

I have moved to Windows 7 Ultimate x64 for almost half a year, recently my hard drive was getting full and I decided to move some of the data to usb external hard drives. Both the externals I have are IDE hard drives and both are NTFS. I always use Quicksfv to make a CRC check file before I transfer the file and then run the CRC check after its been copied over to the external drive. I have used these externals in the past with Windows XP and had no problems.

However, on Windows 7 when transferring large files (usually over 1GB in size), I get corruption in the files. The corruption occurs randomly, if I recopy the files again it might be corruption free. This only occurs when copying files from internal to external, if I copy files from the external to my internal there's no corruption at all.
I have tried changing the usb cables, power cable of the externals, using different usb ports but none of it helped. I scanned both externals with chkdsk and I used memtest+ for over 24hours and all the tests passed fine.

A:Windows 7: Corruption in large file transfers to USB drives

are you using a usb2+ device on a usb1 port/cord?
Do you have relevant system(dsk) errors after the corruption?
Are you using windows explorer to copy/move the files to the externals? Or other program?

I have a HP HPE-510t. It is running windows 10, clean install. I have a 240GB SSD, a 1TB SATA drive, and a 3TB SATA drive. All are NTFS formatted. If I transfer a 1GB file to the 3TB drive it makes it to 50% lightning quick and then slows down so slow it looks like it has stopped. Other two drives work fine. Files 560MB and smaller transfer fine. I don't know where the exact breaking point is between 560 and 1GB. Transfers to that drive do the same thing whether it's from those drives, a USB drive, or the network. Can this motherboard just not handle a larger than 2TB drive? I tried to find a BIOS update, but there's not one. Can't find an answer, going crazy, please help!

I downloaded Windows 7 USB DVD download tool and Windows 7 64 bits ISO. it installed into flash drive successful but it came with bootsect error. So I looked around for it and found here 32-Bit BootSect

I downloaded "". I right clicked and clicked on Properties and clicked unblock then applied and clicked ok. Then opened and I only find Bootsect exe file, nothing else. so I clicked that and command prompts came up and disappeared really instant and nothing ever happened. What am I missing? I also need Window 7 64 bits for my laptop after new HDD arrive. Just needed to make USB bootable somehow.

EDIT: I did right clicked on that exe file and did not see "run as admin"

A friend of mine is asking for help and I am powerless since I do not have windows vista so I thought about you guys! There is the problem:

with Windows Vista , in Windows Mail, if you've sent too large a file, you've got trouble. the mail server is not microsoft (Hotmail or MSN)
It won't send, but keeps trying to send, it won't delete in any conventional and non conventional method and although there is an update to handle this issue, it isn't applicable to our Vista machine, as it's about eighteen months old, therefore a dinosaur in the world of technology.

She does'nt want to download or create another email server that would require changing her email address. She downloaded Incredible because she CAN retain her email address, and will use it until she find a way to get that sent file that won't go deleted from Windows Mail.. Can you help? Thanks

My laptop has been acting up and I want to do a system repair. I've gotten several BSODs which lead to the operating system not being found. I ran a virus scan before the latter and nothing was found. I can get to the recovery options via my usb stick, but when I get there the operating system is not shown.
My only option is to load the drivers via the options dialog box to get my system working again. I say this because it doesn't automatically detect the OS. I've tried selecting a few INF files but none have worked.
So if anyone knows the correct INF file to recognize my hard drive and get my system back to windows, please help. If I can get back to windows I can save my data files to my external hard drive and then do a complete wipe of the drive.

Trying to do a 'repair' re-install of Windows XP Home Edition. I get through the loading of files and into the first installation window of Windows XP and then get the system windows asking for 'The File ASMS on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 CD is needed. Type the path where the file is located and then click OK/B]'. The text in the path text box is 'GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM0\I386'. Hello guys,

I decided to uninstall COLDFUSION from my system and dummy me I confirmed yes to all those popups that say "this file is no longer needed want to delete"? during the uninstall process. Turns out I wiped out some important .dlls that windows needs to start up correctly.

Right now I am hung up on a DOS screen that reads:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I am pretty sure there are more but thats what the system is hung up upon. Now I know there are certain commands that can be put into the recovery console can someone give them to me? Where do I find the above dll and if its on the xp CD...where on the XP CD would it be?

Thank you so much for all your help and replies!!

Check whether the external drive is formatted NTFS or FAT32. If the drive is FAT32, then the maximum allowed size for files is 4GB. You'll either need to convert the drive to NTFS, or split the AVI file into smaller chunks that fit within the FAT32 4GB boundary.

I am currently trying to make a copy of the files on my laptop to an external drive but after 1 Gb of data is transferred the status box when copying stops and doesn't seem to be copying over any further files. When I try to cancel the process it does not register that I have pressed cancel and I have to shut off my laptop manually, waiting a few seconds before turning it back on.

I have uninstalled avast believing that it might be causing an issue with the transfer but the result is still the same.

Recently after a failed attempt it has rendered my hard drive back to an ntfs unreadable state due to error code 0x80070570 .

Any help to resolve either issue would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

A:Windows 7: Windows 7 stalling during copying of large files to externa

What is the external HD? How old is it? When was it formatted etc..

In any case I would run a diagnostic on the external drive.
Also try a copying utility such as TeraCopy free version and see if it has similar problems(once the external drive is returned to a normal state or using another drive.)

Ok i'm looking for a solution to solve my problem.

I'm currently in university and have an ethernet connection in my room which connects me to the university network for internet and all. I also have a buffalo linkstation network storage unit (NAS) and a wireless router.

I have tried connecting the NAS wirelessly using the router as i can't see any other way to attach it and can connect to it but not to both connections at the same time. Is there any way in which i would be able to conect my eathnet to my router in order to broadcast wireless internet along with all my files or even connect to both. I am using Vista. This would then allow me to sync my laptop with desktop PC 2. Or do i need some kind of wired router?

I'm looking for a simple and inexpensive backup solution for a remote location. They have just over a gigabyte of data that needs to be backed up regularly (at least weekly if not daily). I'm sure the amount of data to be backed up will grow over time. These user's do not have an on-site tech and are not very computer savvy. They're okay, but as simple a solution as possible is what is needed. I'm looking for something that would hang off of a PC, maybe via USB? There are no servers over there, just about six PC's all running Windows 2000 Professional. The data to be backed up is on a single PC. Any ideas?

An external USB2 Hard drive would be a great solution. It could be partitioned and used for several different machines too if needed. It can easily be taken off-site (as any real back-up should).

With Win95 we had a dos disk, with Win 98 we had a startup disk, even with Win2000 we have 4 start-up disks... what do we have for XP? When I bought my computer it came with XP pre:installed. Now I want to format my HDD and re:load XP on a clean format of NTFS. Someone at work said if I go into my CMOS setup, I can change my computers boot-up sequence to start with the cd-rom drive, than the hard drive, and or what-ever. Thus with WinXP in the drive, reboot, and XP should begin to install right away... well???

I've recently been having problems with hard drive space disappearing to nothing, a problem that seems to revolve around the SysWOW64 folder. I posted a similar issue in the Vista support forum, but after running a scan with gmer, it found many, many .exe files in the SysWOW64 folder labeled as malware. Most of them seem like random character exe files, and occasionally they pop up in the Task Manager as processes, only to disappear next cycle. I figured it would be much safer to show a professional this log before going off and killing all the files.

In addition, I've added my hijackthis log file, in case the problem is somewhere in there. Any help would be appreciated greatly, as I am back down to 2.3 GB of space remaining, still dropping.

Thank you.

Ok, if you've seen my problem below with my Radeon 9600pro, you will know that I cannot get a decent video graphics card to work.

I'm not asking for world beating graphics. I want to be able to play Pro Evolution Soccer for example?

I have a fairly modest PC, I know but surely the radeon would have been sufficient for what I wanted.

My Specs

AMD athlon 2000+ XP 1.67Ghz WinXP Pro SE, 256Mb RAM 8X DVDRW 80GB Hard Drive. NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 64 Pro (since my radeon 9600 pro won't work)

I intend on getting another 256MB RAM installed.

What can people recommend as a low price way of getting my PC to smoothly run, even an older Pro Evolution Soccer game such as PES4?

I'd love an external option? But I'll try whatever?

I have a one person office I rent from a company. The company has a network and a server. They have tight security so I can't plug anything into the network other than my workstation.

I have about 50GB of files on their server (they partitioned me some space and assigned me a network drive letter of H ) and another 50GB of files on my C: hard drive.

I need to back up this data to a local NAS drive and keep the backup current. I suppose all I can use is USB 2.0 for that unless there's some faster way... maybe put a card in my workstation or something.

Right now I have XP Pro SP3 but will be migrating to Windows 7 pro in a few months.

Ideally, I would like a NAS drive that has autobackup built in and can backup the data on both drives and keep it current rather than having to use Windows backup or install a stand alone software backup program.

LEO! LEO'S FRIENDS! HELP! I know you guys are really really smart. Is there a great solution that meets these requirements?

Hello BleepingComputer,My Dell laptop (Microsoft XP Professional) was recently infected with the AntiVir Solution Pro malware. I could definitely use the assistance of individuals with more computer knowledge than myself (read: everyone).First, I have already read through the AntiVir self-removal guide @ For the reasons I will mention in a moment, I cannot use the steps listed in this guide.Basically, AntiVir has the run of my computer. I cannot access my two main anti-malware/virus programs (free-version MalwareByte's and Sophos Professional Protection) or the Internet.Bad, right? It gets worse. The real problem I am facing (and the reason I cannot use the self-removal guide) is that I cannot access Windows Safe Mode. Every time I attempt to reboot my computer into Safe Mode (basic, with Networking, or with Command Prompt) a blue "you may have a virus" screen appears and asks for me to restart. Time after time, the only way I can boot up my computer is through the normal Windows - which is where nothing works. I have also attempted to use regedit and Search to delete AntiVir files manually, but regedit is immediately shut down by AntiVir as "infected" and Search results return nothing.Thank you in advance for any help and I hope my problem can be solved here!~ Seraph.

I just build a new PC and need to connect my printer, which is a very good but older HP Laserjet 4000N with no USB connector.

Which is the best approach---

use a parallel to usb cable - has anyone used these with success?

install a PCI parallel port card in the PC

get a print server hub and connect it via ethernet to the home network instead of sharing it from my pc.

A:Parallel Port Solution Needed

get a print server hub

By far, this is your best option. When connected by a print server, the printer can be centrally located anywhere in the building and not tethered to a host computer and eating up desk space. This allows everyone on your network to print without being dependent on a host system that must be up and running and connected.

Looks like Newegg has four.

HOWEVER, you said 4000N - that "n" means network so that printer should already have a built-in HP JetDirect print server installed. Look for an Ethernet port on the back - you may already be good to go.

I am trying real hard to help my mom upgrade to Windows XP. Whoever installed her HDD put a partition. She has a WD 20 GB HD. Drive C is 3.89 GB and drive D has the rest. So when I loaded WinXP Pro she had very little room left. She needs all of her save information. Plus she wants to do all this as inexpensiely as possible. So I downloaded Ranish Partiion Manager along with others. The others required floppy od CD. Unfortunately neither are working at this time on her computer. Plus she is on Dial up with Home network and slows her speed to 26.4 kps. There was on great program I downloaded for over an hour. It was Partition Magic. PM was great. I had it all set up. I hit apply and of course I learned real quick I had to buy it for it to apply. Originally this HD started out with WIN 98, Then WIN98 SE and I currently have WinME. Win XP had to be uninstalled. There was only 8% left after all cleanups, defrag, unloading unecessary programs and whatever else I could think of. Can someone help me use Ranish Partiion so I won't loose any data? I need to shink/resisze D as small as I can and make C as large as I can. The primary is FAT32 as well as Primary 2. C starts with cyl at 0 and ends at 509. P2 starts at 510 and ends at 2481. Do I need to mess with the heads and sectors? If someone can help thank you. Have a good one everyone. rob

A:Partition solution needed/resize

Pull her disk and slave it to whatever system you are using now. Copy whatever you want ie docs, email, favorites, etc. Burn the files to cdr. Replace the disk in the system and do a clean install of XP creating one partition on the 20 drive. Now copy your data back.

FWIW upgrades from win9x based os to NT based os are problematic at best. This is why a clean install would be a MUCH better way to go.

ok have searched around this looks promising but is above my computing level what is this key i have to create???

Ok folks quit your freakout...the answer exists and Google can find it. I fixed it on mine.
My symptoms:

Manual install of service pack fails
sfc fails
Windows Modules Installer (aka TrustedInstaller) won't run and returns error 126
...other stuff I can't remember fails
Errors like CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE(0x80080005)
I read through a number of threads like this, here and on other sites. I tried the instructions above to no avail (although I can't be sure they weren't part of the solution). Then I found this:
Windows Modules Installer Error 126 - Fix
There is much detail there, written in broken English, with screenshots provided. Here is what worked for me, partially copypasta and partially paraphrased for brevity and clarity:
I was missing the following registry key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Version.

To fix it:
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\Servicing\Version and read the name of a subfolder. It will be named something like 6.1.7600.16385. That is your {TrustedInstaller ID}. Copy the name of that folder to the clipboard (and paste it in Notepad for safe keeping).

2. Find a subfolder in C:\Windows\WinSxS whose name starts with:

I desperately need help to find some way of recovering an XP installation on a DELL Inspiron 6000 laptop.

The issue:

In trying to do a repair installation, I receive the message:

"The file ‘Asms’ on Windows XP Professional CD-ROM is needed. Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK. Copy files from: GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM0\I386"
I know from exploring this forum and microsoft support files that the installation is having difficulty reading the information on the disc. But none of the suggested fixes are viable because at this stage of the installation there is no keyboard or mouse functionality.

Shift+ F10 does not bring up a command prompt to edit the registry. Nor can I guide the installation to the correct path on the D: drive because I cannot type or access the path in any way.

The mouse and keyboard are functional in virtually any other state.

There is nothing wrong with the installation disc. I have used it successfully to install /and or repair XP on other machines. I have checked the folders by exploring the disc on other computer and it's all there and accessible.

The DVD/CD drive can be accessed when in the Recovery Console or when using a bootable recovery disc. I just can't understand it!.

I did some more googling and encountered a post by our quite helpful moderator Elvandil at this link

Reading that, I attempted to delete the aforementioned items. None of them seemed to be there. Now I'm presented with the misfortune of needing to trouble the knowledgeable and helpful people of techguy for assistance.

Would anybody have insights as to why I'm receiving these issues when trying to repair my install? I use KeyPass and all my generated passwords are on there...I'd be devastated if I wasn't able to recover them.

Well, where to put this strange problem? XP, Office or Network Forum. All three seem to be involved somehow.

What gives?

I have a few large Excel files on
a) a share on a Win XP SP2 desktop
b) a share on a WIn Vista desktop
c) a share on a Ubuntu 6.06 desktop

When i mean large, i mean ~75Mb

When i work on my laptop (Win Xp SP2, 1Gb Ram, 1,86 GHz), i can access all shares just fine. But when i right click such a large Excel file on the XP or Vista computer and click 'Properties', my laptop becomes unresponsive for about a minute. Then, at last, the properties are shown. In the Taskmanager, on the LAN tab, it shows that my LAN connection is swamped at 70% for a whole minute. Sniffing the network traffic learns that the entire contents of the file is being transferred through the network to my laptop!
Just to see the properties...

Hi Guys,

Looking for a bit of help with a storage problem I am currently having. Im trying to turn an old PC of mine into a media server, and therefore trying to install a couple of 500GB IDE hard drives to it. Because the PC is old (a Compaq Deskpro EN P3 733) I am pretty sure it only supports 28-bit LBA. So, for what I thought was a solution I purchased a PCI IDE Controller Card / RAID Controller (, and while the RAID BIOS sees the 500GB drive on startup, it doesnt show up within XP.

I tried hooking up an older 80GB hard drive that I know works with they system (and works when hooked up to the on board IDE controller) and that WAS seen by XP even though the 500gb wasnt.

So the questions:
- Do most PCI IDE controllers have built in 48-bit LBA support, even if the motherboard only supports 28-bit LBA?
- Is there a software workaround for this? A little research turned up this - Intel Application Accelerator - - which is supposed to offer 48-bit support on a 28-bit. Anyone used it? Is this likely to fix the problem?

And just to throw another variable in there, I am not sure if the drive was formatted correctly as I did it using the 28-bit system - would this make a difference?

Any help would be brilliant - I have been tearing my hair out with this one!

Hi all,

I'm looking for a solution to this problem before war breaks out between us and next door.

Our flat and our neighbour share a 256k dsl connection, with a total of 2 computers connected to a speedtouch 585 router. There is no gateway/server set up.

Ideally, i'm looking for a solution that allows dynamic bandwidth sharing by the two computers, configured so that both computers have access to the full bandwidth if the other is not using it, throttling back to a minimum of half the bandwidth depending on how much the other computer is using.

Can this be done on the current setup? If not, can this be done by designating one of the machines as a gateway?

If still not, whats the closest i can get to this solution and what kind of setup does it involve?

Ta muchly

A:Bandwidth sharing scenario - solution needed

I suggest a router with QoS capability. If your current router doesn't offer that capability, you may need one that does. I don't think a realistic solution will be found installing software on one or both machines.

Hi, I'm trying to put some organization around a small non profit company. One of the main things is the company is trying to build up a member community. People who view their website can sign up as members and an email with name and address info is sent to the company.

These are the 3 actions that have to happen
1. The name and address info is used to personalize a form letter in Word.
2. A reply email is generated which contains an attached Word document and a few words.
3. Then the name and address info is saved for future use. This is currently done by saving it into the contact list of the online email app.

So, I guess I'm looking for an appropriate email software that will work on a Mac and download the email from the online server. And, of course, a database. Ideally, these apps will offer some automation of the 3 above tasks.

Any suggestions on software and process?

Okay, so I'm new here and I have a tech problem. Please, I'd like to say in advance, that when responding explain it in layman's terms, and as detailed as you can be, because I'm new at this.

So I have a laptop computer, a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 model, with XP/PS2. It's not a touchpad mouse, but uses the one blue thing in the center, that looks like a nipple (best way to describe it). One moment it was working fine, the next moment it stopped working. The cursor started flashing on one corner of my screen, or it would start traveling all over the board on it's own, now it's stuck going only up and down. I tried to use a usb mouse, that only works for a limited time and then it goes back to acting out of wack. and is stuck only going up and down. The cursor on the screen.

I checked both devices and their both working properly apparently. I've turned the computer on and off and it still doesn't work. I don't know if I have to use the reprogramming disks to probably help if it's some software complication. I want to mention about a year ago this had occurred and I had to return it to the tech guys to fix it, when I was still in warranty. But now I'm not in warranty and it's a bit pricey to fix it, when I want to see if I can do it myself, or if I'd have to take it to a tech guy.

If anyone here can help me, I'd be really grateful, thanks in advance.

A:Laptop Mouse solution greatly needed..

It sounds like "the nipple" (hehe, nice one) is stuck... But first, lets rule out a software problem. Go to start>settings>control panel>mouse. Make sure all settings are correct. My settings are:

clicklock off
swap mouse buttons off
scheme: windows default
enhance on
snap to off
visibility off on off
hardware: make sure right mouse is selected.

If this is all right, I dont think its a software problem.

You may have to open the laptop up and "unstuck" the nipple

I have a program I wrote in Visual Basic that copies a file from one directory into another directory at a prescribed interval. The Visual Basic programs uses the ShellFileCopy API function
ShellFileCopy Visual Basic 6 API Function
FreeVBCode code snippet: Copy Files Using the Shell API
99% of the time, the program works fine.
However occasionally, I get a Windows error that pop's up that says
"File is too large for the destination file system"
This is extremely baffling as the size of the file that is being copied is under 1MB.

Does anyone have any idea to what would be triggering this error in Windows 7?

A:seeking fix for “File is too large for destination file system” erro

Why are you using ShellFileCopy()? I'm asking because I used it in some programs but it was a long time ago. For your purpose can't you just use FileCopy()?

If I remember, I used Shell copy because it provided a progress dialog. If the files are that small that won't come into play. Or is the small file just because you are testing?

Ok, I think I may see the problem. The wrapper function uses Strings as source and destination. If you read the MSDN entry for SHFILEOPSTRUCT the source and destination strings must have a double null terminator. If not, the function will just keep reading memory getting the source or destination name until it finds a double zero.

You need to make a string compatible with LPCTSTR type that has a double zero a the end.

As everybody I also jumped into gmails imap protocol. Excellant decision, but as everybody knows it turns very slow. The problem is that because imap keeps on syncronizing the folders, the bigger your inbox, outbox, sent, etc. gets, the slower your gmail client is going to respond. Ontop of that for all of you who didn't yet unsubscribe from your all mail label, you are just wasting your time waiting for that inbox to load. hence the first thing is to unsubscribe from the all mail label ( after all those are only duplicates). second you have to keep it as empty as possible.

Here comes my problem.
I get plenty of email from my business associates friends etc, and my inbox always turns full. (slowing everything in gmail) I don't want to delete any of them, just would like it if there were an option to AUTO move all my email older than a specific date to another folder, (local or another gmail account.) in outlook there is the option called archive or rather auto archive. however it won't work with my gmail setup using imap. Sooo Please help me. I'm desperate already. I NEED A AUTOARCHIVE THAT WORKS WITH GMAIL USING IMAP!!!!

Well, My problem is regarding the Secondary IDE channel (port/interface) on the motherboard of my desktop PC. My motherboard is Intel D845GVAD2. (MicoATX Factor)

Well, Earlier each desktop motherboard has got 2 IDE interfaces - Primary & Secondary.
On each IDE interface upto 2 IDE drives can be connected using dual IDE cable - called Master and Slave drive.

BY convention, the primary IDE port is for HDD and secondary IDE port is for ODD but we can reverse it. Isn’t it?

So, the problem I am encountering is that when I connect 2 (two) ATA/IDE HDD to the secondary IDE port, the Operating System won't load. I only get a blank screen after POST. Only when 1 (single) HDD is connected to this interface, then only the OS loads and computer works. But this must not happen. This is not normal.

Similarly, when I connect 2 ODD (DVD burner) to the secondary port, the computer boots but only when I manually set each ODD data transfer mode to MWDMA2 (multi word DMA 2) within IDE configuration in BIOS. Otherwise, the BIOS uses the faster UDMA mode but in this mode the computer just won’t boot (the windows OS freezes just after few seconds after it starts to load) even though these 2 ODD support UDMA transfer mode. Earlier there was no such problem.

Also, when I installed these 2 HDD drives on the primary IDE interface, the computer started without problem and BIOS used UDMA mode 5 for both the drives. Same for ODD. This proves that that there is no problem in HDD or ODD or I... Read more

A:Solution needed - Motherboard drive port is malfunctioning

OK, first you need to understand that the 845 chipset [which your board uses] was released in 2002. That makes the mb at the very least 10yrs old. Nothing lasts forever and I think you have received very good service from these parts.

While it is possible to get it to work using an add-in controller card, doing so is NOT cost effective and you would still have a 10yr old system.

The choices for an ata type pci card are very limited due to the age of this type of hardware. Here is an example of what you could use to fix the problem; again I do not recommend putting any money into this old of a system.

Once computer hardware is 3yrs old or more, it makes no sense to spend money on repairing said hardware. It is cheaper to replace with more modern hardware.

Hi RM2007 !

What's the maximum display resolution you can set in the display properties ? You probably need to update your video drivers.

Your computer is pretty old and there doesn't seem to be any drivers for XP available from Dell's website.

Found these drivers from Ati's website : Yours should be the second one (under Rage Pro).

If your video card has the standard 4MB memory then once the drivers are installed you'll be able to set your display resolution to 1024 x 768 (85Hz).

About the run command, check that it's checked to appear in the sart menu properties :

I recently used Eraser, a free overwriter, to eradicate personal documents on a drive I intend to sell. The problem is I also deleted a writing folder with manuscripts I would've liked to have kept. I did the 35-pass overwrite. Is there a way to recover the files I want after this, or am I simply going to be forced to eat the loss? I've tried using file recovery hardware and so far none of them can find what I want.

If it helps, I've also done a system restore--a complete rewrite--in the month prior to deleting these files via Eraser. A few of the documents existed prior to the rewrite. Since Eraser only targets specific areas where the files you choose are located, could it also be possible to recover a few of them from the older versions, as well? Outdated manuscripts yes, but a partial loss is nowhere near as bad as a complete loss.

A:How do I 'ZIP' a large folder in Windows 7

Launch Windows Explorer. Select all the files/folder you want to compress (you can also use CTRL+click to add more files). Right-Click > Send To > Compressed Folder. The ZIP will be located in the folder you are workin in. There is a tutorial if you need more info : Zip a File or Folder - How To

Here are screenshots of how it's done with the built-in zip feature :

If you want more features though, I recommend 7-Zip. It's lightweight, has a LOT of options, usually has better compression on ZIP (or you can use the 7z format which compresses even more), and is open-source : 7-Zip. It will add a context menu accessible via Right-Click in Explorer.

Hi, I'm new here. Since a week ago, my computer using large amount of RAM for some Windows processes like explorer.exe and winlogon.exe. When I start the computer, it is working fine, but then after 1 to 2 hours, it use more RAM even if I dont do anything.

Here is the list of the most notable processes
-explorer.exe = 50.000 K to 150.000 K
-wisptis.exe = 20.000 K to 40.000 K (there are two processes, I suspect one of them is a virus)
-winlogon.exe = 40.000 K to 150.000 K

Is it normal or it is definitely a virus? How to reduce these RAM usage?

A:Windows processes using large RAM

I suspect one of them is a virus

You are probably correct in assuming there is a virus, as these 3 processes are a part of the Windows OS (Wisptis.exe is a system process which comes included with Microsoft Office Suite driver for Wacom Tablet, Windows ink services and tends to run alongside Adobe Acrobat Reader) Winlogon is the logon service where you logon to Windows with your user name and password.
You can also run Process Explorer to get a better handle on what is doing this.

So I found a post on this forum with a similar problem. I'm trying to move a file that is larger than 4GB in size from my main hard drive to an external, and getting the error message in the title. The consensus on the other post was that the hard drive must have been a FAT format, and that too fix the problem either split up the file or reformat the hard drive as NTFS. Well, by all accounts, my computer is telling me that my external hard drive is ALREADY formatted as NTFS, but I'm still getting this error. I would prefer not to split up the file, but other than that, what are my options? I would appreciate any advice.
