Programs shortcuts'icons changed when changed exe file icon appearance

Q: Programs shortcuts'icons changed when changed exe file icon appearance

Hi guys, so I have a little problem, I've downloaded FileTypesMan because I wanted to change the .exe files appearance on my computer.

I did this using this program - all .exe file icons changed, however, with them changed ALL the shortcuts to all the programs that I have on my laptop - now they all look the same.

I can't figure out how to change it all back.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
THanks
Max

Hello Max, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you like, you might see if downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed exe item in the tutorial below may be able to help. It'll restore the default association and registry entries for exe files.

Most of my desktop Icons appearance has changed to a default. The MS icons along with a few other icons are the originals, the rest has changed to a MS default. The Icons work, they are labeled correctly, I can access the programs. I have done a system restore back to yesterday with no effect. Any ideas?

Hi
I had help in removing a virus ('windows has encountered critical error and will close in one minute') from my computer via this site about a month ago. A couple of the symptoms were altered appearance of the desktop icons and windows calendar opening on start up. Both of these went away when the computer was cleaned here. Last week they both reappeared - the calendar I fixed by changing the settings but I cannot fix the icons which have a 'cartoon-like' appearance again. I tried deleting the icon cache and letting the computer create another but that didn't work and I don't want to make things worse by meddling further in what I don't know enough about. I've scanned the computer with Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes (with MSE disabled) and the computer comes up clean. I think I was caught by the fake Adobe update last time but I have removed Adobe Reader and added Foxit as advised at the time of the last virus removal. The only thing that has been downloaded was some kind of clipart my wife got from a free website a few weeks back. No alerts popped up about the site or files at the time. Any ideas on a cause/remedy for this?
Many thanks,
Russ

A:Desktop icons changed appearance again

It is a regular problem. Some windows files are deleted/corrupted. Try the options below:

Use system restore and restore to a previous dated restore point(which worked without the problem you specified)
If that didn't work, try the Avira AntiVir Removal Tool from Here
And the last option is using recovery tools like the one below. I've personally used it and was helpful.

Use this tool to recover default critical windows files and settings. Download and Instructions - Here

I downloaded an update to Mcafee this morning. After a system restart, the appearance of the "M" icon in the system tray and desktop have changed. It was a white "M" in a red box, with the "M" sides straight up and down. Now it looks like an upside down "w".

I talked to a tech online who just asked me to check Mcafee's version, build, engine, etc. then told me "not to worry". When I pressed the issue he said the icon didn't change. Then I asked if I could send a screen shot to him and he gave me his bosses email. I sent a screen shot, but knowing Mcafee I probably won't hear anything.

I'm very afraid I may have downloaded a virus or trojan....please help!!!

Good day folks,

This has probably been touched on many times - but I mistakenly unpinned the Windows explorer icon from my taskbar. When I dragged the Windows Explorer icon from the desktop back to the taskbar it has a different appearance. Is there a way to get it to appear as it did originally? ie the yellow files (out of the box).

Regards.

A:Windows explorer icon appearance changed when unpinned.

Try this.

1. Right click on explorer in the taskbar.
2. right click on the Windows explorer entry on the jumplist.
3. Select Properties.
4. Press Change Icon.
5. If the icon file showing is not %windir%\explorer.exe then browse to that file and select the first icon.

Upadate: On my system it is "C:\Windows\explorer.exe"

Another thought.

If you create the shortcut with the location of %windir%\explorer.exe it should pick everything up automatically.

I have two SanDisk flash drives (8 & 32 GB) and a 32 GB SanDisk Micro SD card and, as of yesterday, the folder icons have changed to shortcut icons that refer to "C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe F/c "start %cd%\sony.exe && %windir%\explorer %cd%\Extras". 'Extras' is just one of the folders on my 8GB flash drive. My files are still on all of my devices, but I cannot access them. After seeing the C prompt statement, I figured I am way out of my league. What do I need to do to restore my folder icons and directly access my files again?

My thanks in advance for your help.

A:Folder icons changed to shortcuts

The files have been corrupted, so I don't think they will be recoverable. Always use SD flash drives for temporary storage, and back up important files also on a DVD or on a second standard hard drive

Hello all, my name is Chris Lewis and I found this site through google. I seem to have the same problem at least one of your members has already had.

http://forums.techguy.org/t287707&highlight=icons+converted+.lnk.html

Is pretty much the same problem that i am having. none of my exes will open and all my shortcuts got change to .lnk and don't work. my friend was using my computer when this happened, lol, but i think it has something to do with spyware and adaware messing up or something.

It seems that in the previous post JSntgRvr fixed their problem, but i'm having trouble fallowing it. I was wondering if you guys could post some kind of step by step fix.

thanks for the time

Hello, my name is Brandon. I'm new to this forum. I'm having the exact same problems as another member named Chris. forums.techguy.org/t307784.html I tried to follow the instructions layed out in that thread but have encountered some problems. I believe that I've removed all the viruses from my computer but all of my shortcuts are still showing lnk extensions. I was able to run a full scan using adware plus.

The next step on the thread says to download the EXEFIX08.reg file and add it to the registry.

1). How do I "Rename the extension from TXT to REG and double click to add it to the registry"? I've tried but have been unsuccessful. When I download the file, it opens either as an html document or in wordpad. I'm not sure how to rename an extension in wordpad. Can you please explain how I can do this?

Also, I would appreciate some more clarification on this statement "Before doing this, run Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View Tab and ensure that Hide Extensions of know file types is UNselected."

Why????
I don't have a restore point, but what's the cause of this issue??? are there any good solution except restore or reinstall system ?
and I remember that this problem occured usually by windows system.

See if this helps: Default File Type Associations - Restore

I think you might want to start by resetting the default for .exe. The tutorial had a "reset to default" for every file type

You can download each .reg file or download a zipped folder that contains all of the .reg files.

I have just finished updating my Vista x64 Ultimate to Windows 7 x64 Professional. I am in the process of reinstalling all my software and I have observed something usual.

In Vista when I use Control Panel>Programs and Features, most icons represent the installed programs. In Windows 7 many, but not all, are showing a generic icon for programs that Vista recognized correctly.

Is this a known issue or can I do something to get the program icons back?

When the latest version of iTunes is installed, all of the icons on the Windows 7 taskbar and on the Start menu are changed to the iTunes icon. No matter what I click on, it starts iTunes. An Apple technician had me create a new administrator account as a test. Since the icons in the new account appeared normally, he said it may not be a serious problem as perhaps only some unknown setting needs to be changed. Since he suggested I may want to contact Dell or Microsoft or to try posting on some forums, I thought this would be a logical place to start.

He had me remove all Apple software from my computer and install iTunes again, which resulted in all the icons changing to iTunes again. I just got my first ipod and I would like to be able to use iTunes on this computer. I am not technically proficient.

I would appreciate any suggestions. Has anyone else seen this happen recently?

Thanks

Are the icons, that got replaced with the iTunes icon, only shortcuts or all program icons shortcut or not.

If only shortcuts have been affected, then you might see if downloading and merging the LNK download in the tutorial below to restore the default shortcut associations may be able to fix this for you after restarting the computer when done.

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on Dell XPS 15 L502x Notebook.

Today morning when i switched on my laptop, I found some of the Icon changed to unknown icon.(See Attachements)

I searched google i found somewhere a question was posted with same problem. The solution was given as to change the destination of the target exe file. I performed it by renaming the folder in which the exe file is present. I found that the icon changed back to original icons from unknown-icon.

Also when i right click and select properties of those exe files, the original icon of the application appears there, but not in explorer / desktop / taskbar.

I am posting this question here to troubleshoot my problem.
Dont ask me to reinstall all applications and software. I have already done it and but the icon remains as Unknown until i change its destination from its original destination. Even avast icon changed to unknown.(see image) But i cant change its destination to check for its reappearance because it is always open when i start system.

Why this destination(Target path) of the exe file affect the original icon of the application.

(using win7 x64)

I used a program called "Types" to change a few file icons in windows. I did the same thing on a laptop but used a different program so I didn't get this problem. After I changed the default icon for .exe every exe program changed to the default icon I had selected. Not just the programs I already had on the computer but it uses the default icon for new programs downloaded and even ones viewed on disc. And it changed all shortcuts to the default icon.

I've been able to restore most of the shortcuts through the properties menu. Interesting thing is I have to do it twice on every icon since the first attempt seems to do nothing (and refreshing the desktop doesn't work).

I've downloaded additional icon programs that have a restore setting but that hasn't worked. I've tried a registry fix but that doesn't work. Neither has using the windows restore point. I've gone into the registry itself and changed around the default icon for the exe. Sure it'll change the icon but no exe programs with their own icons will return to their original state. My last attempt has been to delete the icon cache and that has also failed.

So now that google has let me down I'm hoping someone here can help me. A big thank you in advance cause this is really annoying.

Hi,
I got VB6 installed in my Vista.
One day, I found the .vbp icon in the file explorer had been changed by perhaps the antivirus (while the .vbp icon in desktop it is still remain as before).
I want to change back the .vbp icon in the file explorer:

Regedit
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
VisualBasic.Project
DefaultIcon
C:\......\Microsoft Visual Studio-2\VB98\vb6.exe,16
I tried to changed to
C:\......\Microsoft Visual Studio-2\VB98\vb6.exe,1 or
C:\......\Microsoft Visual Studio-2\VB98\vb6.exe,32
However, after restar my Vista, nothing happened.

Can you help?

A:The icon for VB6 .vbp file was changed

Since vb6 is no longer supported by Microsoft, I installed visual basic 2010. There is no entry in the registry for visualbasic.project.

It's possible that the default program in Control Panel for this is not correct. In my system, the default program for .vbproj is Microsoft Visual Studio Version Selector.

I have looked at program defaults and even removed updates still nothing seems to correct the issue. The windows start button does the same as well - all of the programs listed there have the same icon.
When I click properties they all seem to all say: LNK File (.lnk)
How do I restore - I tried a system restore, but it will only go back to today nothing farther in the past.

Hi everyone. I'm new to BC. Hope someone here can help me with my problem.Yesterday every single icon on my desktop, Task Bar, Start-Menu, and even in the extended menus have ALL changed to the iTunes logo/icon. Every. Single. One. If I try to open something-- whether it's a document, inserted CD, Internet Explorer, etc. --iTunes opens instead. I've right-clicked on every shortcut I have on my desktop and Task-Bar and I've viewed the Properties of each consecutively, and they all say that their File Type is iTunes (with the suffix ".lnk" at the end.) Now, I CAN open the programs labeled as iTunes, but I have to go around the direct short-cuts and main menus; opening with a right-click is what I've had to do from the computer sub-menu of the Start Menu. The only "different" thing that I've done recently is tweaking the Auto Play options in the Control Panel (I wanted to watch a movie, and the default program was annoying.) But even after I reset them all back to Default, the icon problem and File Type issues have remained. Does anyone have an idea why this is happening? (I own a new Acer laptop running on Windows 7, if that helps with anything.)All suggestions will be much obliged. Edit: Moved topic from Introductions to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

No, nothing specific, but I'd recommend that you keep your backups current and on another media. Things like this can happen and never reoccur. Then again...it can go down permanently and you'll be glad you heeded the warning.

Just to be certain you don't have unwelcome guests, post your HiJackThis log in Security forum and have the experts check it. You might have some Trojan or other malware that escaped your AV scan. It happens.

Good luck.

when typing in live messenger and yahoo messenger, everything also is in italic.

anyone knows what's d problem with my laptop?

A:font appearance changed

My guess is that you are having problems with separate different applications. Can you try pressing Control+I (in live, yahoo, word or excel) and see if it takes off the italics? If Firefox, your font might be set to be too big (usually by holding the control and rolling the mouse up and down), I believe Control+0 is the standard shortcut to bring all fonts back to defaults. Or otherwise, try Tools -> Options, select Content, and look under Fonts & Colors. The size on mine is 16 (Default font: Times New Roman). Though I don't see any way to make it bold...

Is this only happening in those applications? If it's everywhere, I would check the Windows fonts:
Right click on the desktop, select Personalize.
Click Window Color and Appearance.
Click classic appearance properties... on the bottom.
In the new window (Appearance Settings), click on the button Advanced.
Pick Active Title Bar from the drop down list, and see if the bold and italic buttons are selected. If they are, check to see if it's better unselected (they are not by default).
A screenshot of the problematic text would be helpful, I think.

A:Changed EXE Icon Now All EXE's are changed to default Icon

It's much safer to change application shortcut icons on a "one at a time" basis, using the built-in Properties > Change Icon feature which most shortcuts have. Using software to do it is unecessary and also (as you've discovered) risky.

Doesn't the software have a way to restore defaults?
If it doesn't, you'll have to restore each one manually by right-clicking one, choosing "Properties", then clicking "Change icon". Click "Browse", navigate to that shorcut's parent application in C:\Program Files, find the main executable and select that.

While working on some Microsoft Word Documents, with MS Word Starter (free version), all file icons and extensions everywhere in the computer changed.

Icons in some Word documents with .docx extensions changed to a plain orange (attachment 1), while retaining the same extension. When double clicked to open, a microsoft window appears asking me to activate the full Microsoft Office 2010 (paid version), which is in Widows 7 by default. These documents are not opening.

The rest of the Word documents changed their extensions from .docx to .rtf (attachment 2). Their icons also changed from the usual Word document icon. These open with Word Satarter but in Compatibility Mode, which did not happen before.

The option to 'Open with' in the right click menu does not show Word Starter in the pop up window (Attachment 3). Not even when 'Other programs' are selected.

I did a repair to the Word Starter from the Control Panel, to no avail. I have a few hundred Word documents in my libraries which are now in a total mess!

What can I do?

I was editing some video when the application crashed, i was not too worried about this as sometimes it happens, so i did a ctrl, alt and delete to end the process, then i remembered i had downloaded a trail of 'dvd creator 6' and decided to install it to see what it was like, so i unpacked it (as it was a zip file) and installed it, it went through the process ok, when it finished it asked if i wanted to open the application so i clicked on 'yes' but it would not open i went to the desktop and clicked on the shortcut but still it would not open, i then went to 'start, all programs' and tried to open it there but no luck, everything else associated with this application like user guide would open but not the application it self so i decided to restart my pc and i noticed the o/s loading screens was slower than usual and when it did get to my desktop the desktop background picture loaded as usual but all the application and taskbar took ages to load, anyway i tried dvd creator 6 but still no luck so i uninstalled it, then i noticed all my flv. and vob files had changed from the usual icon to one that can only be described as like a page with the corner folded over a box on this page with a blue border at the top with 3 little white boxes on the right in this blue border and in the centre of the box 3 underlined images (which i could not make out) clicking on these will not open them in their associated applications or play in any media player, luckily i ... Hi. I'm using windows vista. Yesterday, the win doc hanged. Left with no choice, I had to manually shut down the pc. After restart, the display setting changed to 800x600 (i'm using samsung 18" LCD). I changed the setting back to 1280x726, but something is not right with the display. Somehow the font is a bit blurry and not sharp as before. or one word is sharp and the next one is blurry. and when i'm using autocad, i can the all the shapes/fonts has gradient. what could be the problem?

the resolution is still too small for that display.

If changing the resolution didn't work, try reinstalling the video drivers, or restoring the pc to an earlier time

WINDOWS XP (Home Edition). IE 6 . OE 6.
When I switched on today I was surprised and dismayed to find that OE had changed in appearance.
I now have : e-mail. newsgroups, contacts on the left. Clicking on e mail takes me to the "second" page with INBOX e mail at the top and preview panel at the bottom.

To get my Send, Delete folders I have to click on VIEW. Click on Folder >then on = to find them.

The list of my contacts which used to be at the bottom left of the opening page seems to have disappeared.

The only "differenyt" programme I have installed is Starware and I did uninstall this to see if OE would return but it hasn`t.

I hate this new O.E. Is there any way I can return to my old one? I have tried clicking VIEW and then Layout but can`t make sense of what I should do.

I would welcome your help and advice, please.

My THANKS.

Hi,

I would like to streamline a user account on my Win 7 PC so it maximises performance. This is due to an overheat problem I have been experiancing since my Win 7 upgrade.
I have created a new user account that I would like to run an application really smoothly so have taken some performance tweek advice and turned off the aero peak function, and most of the fancy visual apperance settings, set some services to manual and assumed it would only apply these settings for the current user, but it applies the settings to all users registered on the computer.

Is it possible to set up two (or more) different accounts so one could have all the default features and visual apperance settings as standard (for email, Web browsing, media centre, gadgets, all that nice stuff), and onther user account be bare bones, no nice graphics and visuals, less defautl services but run high demand programs better? This type of solution would be of great benefit to me. Can it be done with Win 7?

Many thanks,

Matt

A:Can windows appearance be changed per user?

Hello Matt it appears you can only Enable or Disable for All Users - How to Allow or Prevent Changing Window Color and Appearance in Windows 7 but if this prevents damage to your computer than it will at least serve a purpose.
If you could try to explain in more detail the why, when your computer started overheating than more knowledgeable members than I may be able to help with that pressing problem too as some may have experienced the same issue and found a resolution that may be helpful and prevent hardware failure.

The dust around the fan intake slots (if laptop) may have to be cleaned to improve airflow thus lowering temperature.

System Restore: I used to have a box that opened with a suggested restore point, and then below an option to choose a different restore point. When I clicked on that a page opened with my restore points, and also a box to show restore points older than 5 days.

Now the box that opens for system restore no longer shows a suggested restore point with that option to choose a different restore point. The only option on the page is to click Next. When I do that it takes me to a page with restore points but the option to show restore points older than 5 days is also gone.

Shadow copy information for C shows 6.936 GB used -- Allocated 8.079 GB -- Maximum 30 GB. I have 288 GB of free disk space on drive C.

For D it shows 216.109 MB used -- 499.266 MB allocated -- Maximum 1.5 GB. Drive D has 9.99 GB of free space.

I have checked to show hidden files and folders as some said that would solve it, but it didn't for me.

I've run into a strange little annoyance. Recently, my desktop theme and sound files get set to the XP defaults when i startup my pc (HP Pavillion dv2000, about a year old).

For my Folder appearance, I use "Windows Classic Style", which, for some reason, gets switched to "Windows XP Style". I have to go to Properties -> Appearance to set it back to "Classic" when this happens.

I have several customized sound files that I use as my system sounds. Most of the sounds I have set are not affected, but some events that I don't normally use sounds for (Device Connect, Device Disconnect, etc.) get set to the Windows Default sounds. I have to go into the Sounds control panel to fix everything.

The weird thing is that it doesn't happen every time I start my computer. It happens about 1/4 or 1/2 of the time. Sometimes it starts up normally.

One thing that may be relevant: I bought an external drive (Seagate 500gb) about a week before this problem started, but I don't see how the 2 would be related.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

In various posts on Microsoft forcing us towards Win10 upgrade, I couldn?t find anyone describing the actual harm KB2952664 is doing to the system. Is just that people are being annoyed with something being installed, but they don?t exactly know what it is doing? Or people experience system being much slower? Or something else?

I?ll try to describe my problem linked to Win10 push by MS.

After installing a number of updates that accumulated over past six or so weeks, my Windows Update screen (Windows 7) changed appearance. That Windows Update screen used to show available updates ? important and optional. You would then click on a link that would show the whole listing of available updates. You would be able to select KBs that you want, OK it, and when back into Windows Update screen, run/execute whatever KBs you selected in the previous screen.

With recent KB installs, that Windows Update screen doesn?t show any more available updates ? important and optional. Instead, in that space it says ?Upgrade to Windows 10?. Where button to install updates used to be, now there is button that says ?Get started?, indicating that you would start upgrade to Win10.

Under that box, there is a link that says ?Show all available updates?. When I click on it, I do get familiar screen, with all available (Win7) updates. If I select any of those updates and go back to initial Windows Update screen, I see again ?Upgrade to Windows 10? and not what used to be (from memory): e.g. ? 12 imp... Read more

I have a Windows 7 laptop that was working fine yesterday. However, this morning when my daughter turned it on the taskbar suddenly started to look like the XP taskbar. I cannot get it to change back. However, the bigger problem is that the screen brightness is very low and the computer is not detecting the volume or Internet hardware. The controls to change the brightness and volume are not working. It is almost like the computer is in safe mode but it really isn't as I double checked to make sure that it did not accidentially get booted into it. I also ran a virus scan but it did not find anything. Any ideas of what the problem could be and how to fix it? The restore to prior day is also not working as I checked it in case I had to revert to resolve.

Hello,
Thanks so much for your time and anything you can do to help me with this. I am generally pretty good with malware removal. However I seem to have contracted something that, for a while just played random sound clips, mostly ads. The other day I went to my computer and all my quick launch icons were replaced with an Internet Explorers icon. Then today the background is changed, I used to have the appearance set to best performance, so it looked more like older versions of windows. It's now set back to windows vista basic. The quick launch menu and the regular task bar menu have been switched around (instead of start, quick launch, tasks, clock its Start, tasks, quick launch, clock)

Aside from that my itunes library is completely gone and was uninstalled and all my bookmarks from Mozilla are missing as well. These are the only things I have noticed but I'm sure I'm missing a few things.

I'm running Vista Home Premium SP2, I use mozilla firefox exclusively. I don't use anti-virus software But I use Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D and Adaware regularly. My laptop is connected via wifi all day long.

Again I thank you for anything you can do to help me and I appreciate the effort.

After uninstalling some uncessary programs like games and other stuff like google chrome (i use firefox and IE) off my computer and then restarting, most of the shortcuts orignal picture icons were repalced with general icons. When i try to open one up it says "Item that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved".
So, I tried going to properties on all of the shortcuts but Icouldn't access the general tab it says "the name specified in the target box is not valid."
When i try to open some one of the shortcuts , like Microsoft Works, directly throguh "all programs" or the actual folder it says " Windows is searching for MSWorks.exe, to locate the file yourself, click Browse." When i locate the file and try to open it, it just continues to say the same thing.

Hello! I just joined with high hopes that someone can help me. I have posted this on another Forum but when I saw this Forum, I thought you might be able to help since I use Vista.

Indeed, I was brought here by reviewing two potential 'solutions' to my problem that have previously been posted. They are:

Corrupted Icons on Windows Vista
How To Harvest, Restore, & Retain Icons on Vista

My problem is this: I am trying to put some of my most used websites on my desktop as shortcuts. When I do this using Internet Explorer (IE), I find the website, right click, select create shortcut, (then a box comes up saying 'Do you want to create a shortcut to the desktop?' Yes, I do. And one is created with a logo that is unique to that website.

This is what I want-to create the shortcuts onto my desktop with each shortcut being represented by its distinctive website logo. IE will do this for me. (I like using Firefox but I have not found a right click option that says Create Shortcut using Firefox-so I have to use IE).

But there is something afoul going on behind the scenes.

It seems that my desktop icons become corrupted somehow and revert back to the infamous Internet Explorer blue 'e' generic icon.

Sometimes I can correct this by redoing the shortcut routine. Sometimes it does not work at all for other icons. (I have one desktop icon that is totally locked up in the blue 'e' and will not-for any reason-revert back to its distinctive icon.)

Other icons are not affected... Read more

If you're still having trouble after installing iTunes again, download THIS.

Save the .reg file to your desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

Restart the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file (in Notepad), right-click the file (before opening it) and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

Something has changed on my pc in the last few days and I have no idea what happened.

I have folders set up on the desktop

for example, i have a folder called MS Office

Within the folder are 4 icons for the programs (word, Excel, Powerpoint and Diagnostics)

The icons use to display as medium size - not there are appearing as details.

This has happened to every folder on the desktop. I can change them back to medium size icons, but they do not stay.

How do i fix this issue?

A:Icons have changed from medium sized icons to details

You could try resetting Explorer Folder View to default.
Then set it manually to what you want and see if it "sticks."

Edit: Note that the .reg file just deletes the "bags" Explorer uses to remember the settings. As the settings are set and changes the "bags" are reloaded. So it is not some vital Registry thing that can't be erased.

Edit2: Actually in this case it is not a .reg file but a .bat that uses registry editing commands via the command line. But it does delete the bags of folder view settings.

this is very confusing to me ive never seen it so i found a way back onto the internet by using a shortcut i had.

not even sure how to start this. i dont know exactly what i did but everything was changed. i was going to try to watch a movie thats on my laptop, it said 'avi' and when i clicked on it nothing happened. i dragged it into itunes to see if it would play there, nope. i right-clicked it, picked 'open with' VLC, still nothing. right clicked it again and chose windows media center, nothing happened. i tried transfering the folder with the option available in media center, still didnt play.

when i closed media center i saw all my desktop stuff was changed to open with media center, i knew immediatly i screwed up pretty bad somewhere. i right clicked internet explorer and changed it to open with internet explorer, it then changed everything to open with internet explorer. when i clicked on internet explorer it didnt open, but it did open the download bar as if i downloaded it. it says "Internet Explorer.Ink" or .lnk. when i click open, the window comes up but closes right away.

can someone help me by telling me how to get everything back to normal?

A:[SOLVED] changed one thing to open with a different application and it changed everyt

It sounds like what you've done is associate a .lnk file (shortcut type) with an application and now all shortcuts will run with that application. The avi file you were referring too may be just that as well: a shortcut.

This has also been known to be caused by a malware infection, in which case if you suspect it, you'll have to report it to our security team in the appropriate Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help subforum.

This may help with the situation.

Hi all-
Apologies in advance as I am not exactly technologically sound.
I tried plugging in my digital camera today, and though it did not come up, I hunted down the Removable Disk (E) drive, which I figured would open it. It told me that I had to choose a program to open it with, so I chose some kind of picture viewer. Then all the icons on my desktop turned into said picture viewer, and I cannot open anything but that program from the desktop. Also, when I go into Programs and try to open them, they don't work there either. Help!
I am using Windows 7. I have tried System Restore but it told me that it could not complete it and gave me some kind of error message with 0x80070005. It recommended that I turn off my protection or whatever to complete it, but I have Norton 360 and no idea how to turn it off!
Any help is greatly appreciated- we just bought this computer in November and now my husband is ticked off!

I have tried system restore back one week did not work, I was following ASK tech page guide and downloaded REGSERVO program came back with 6800 errors and wanted 39.00, well as you know the economy is in the tank and I do not have the extra money, but i do have the extra time if someone could walk me through what to do.

I use Norton utilities and clean the drive/registries/and explorer weekly.
Please send any advise possible

A:sudden error message CPU has been changed or CPU Ratio changed failed

REGSERVO is a Rogue program that tells you, you have problems and "we will fix them for you for $39.00!" "But. Wait! for an extra amount for shipping and handling we will really screw your Windows installation up!"

Of course they make you wait until they find the registry errors to tell you that you have to pay $39.00. I just did a google search on REGSERVO and the only ones that give RegServo good reviews are, and hear is the drum roll, Regservo itself. Stay away from any of these programs that say they will fix your registry then want money to fix the problems they found.

Also there is no need to run any registry cleaner. More often than not it will not help your problem or speed up your computer, and can indeed break your registry to the extent of having to reinstall windows.

If this is the system in yur Computer specs, have you been having any problems with needing to adjust the date and time lately?

Hello guys,

I'm having a bit of a problem. Earlier tonight a couple of program icons started appearing as blank on my Windows 7 Pro PC. The programs in question were Word 07 and Powerpoint 07. I decided to try and fix them by rebuilding the icon cache but... unfortunately it just seems to have made things worse!

Now all of the Office programs have blank icons, as well as my anti-virus, Skype, Steam, WLM and a couple of others. Resetting and Rebuilding the Icon Cache keeps giving me the same results...

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks!

A:Rebuild Icon Cache File - Certain programs now have blank/default icons. 8(

The original files or icons from which the icon cache is populated or the registry data pointing to them may have been damaged or somehow deleted. This is hard to sort out except by reinstalling the program.

Can you try reinstalling one of those programs to see if you can get it back as a test?

Office type programs might fix this by doing a "repair", but you may need the disk to complete it.

I've tried resetting all the settings back to original and have an up to date Kaspersky anti virus which isn't reporting anything at all.
any ideas?

Hi wysiwyg,

Have you by any chance disabled the Tablet PC Optional Components as these are needed to enable the Sniping Tool. To reenable them, click on the start orb and type Programs and Features into the search box and press enter/return. Click on Turn Windows features on or off, and provide administrative credentials when prompted. Scroll down the list, and ensure that the above mentioned item is selected, i.e. is ticked (see image below), and then click OK. You may need to restart, but the tool should be back.

I just noticed that the icon which shows in the Taskbar when I open Computer, C:\, Recycle Bin... has changed to the attached pic. I don't know how/why it changed, but I do believe it has.

Can someone explain to me how to revert this back to normal?

Somehow on WINNT Workstation 4.0 SP6a, icons have changed to the attached screen shot. Does anybody know how to change this back? It is the most annoying thing I have ever seen. I'm trying to avoid re-install, and i have been through virtually all settings i can think of. I have also tried re-service packing...

A:Icon's have Changed

If the icons are looking kinda funky (ie..not like usuall) ... Look for a file called ShellIconCache in the WINNT dir (file is hidden.) delete it and windows will rebuild the icon library and put them in that file (Make a backup first just in case something else is wrong with the OS - but we all know Windows is flawless ).
Windows stores the icons associated with applications in that file. If it is deleted, Windows will rebuild it right after you delete it...but it may take a few minutes - that is why I say reboot. This is worth a try.

Are you running terminal server(remote desktop)?

If you do a search for this issue on the web, it comes up with several articles that reference that this is a known bug when running terminal server(remote desktop).

It could also be doing an update....

If you reboot does it still appear?

Hello:
Every morning when the PC/Win 7 started, appearance Display Setting changed to '1280 x 1024(recommended), instead I set display setting to '1024 x 768,' since the monitor is older and works fine with '1024 x 768' appearance display setting, rather 'recommend setting' ... '1280 x 1024' setting.

Is there a way for me to lock the display setting to '1024 x 768' permanently?

Thanks for any help on this in advance.

Hello,

I have a problem with my win xp home edition:
all the desktop icons, control panel subfolder icons have changed to IE icons, IE itself dosn't work, none of the desktop shortcuts work, also some of the control panel options (Administrative tools, add/remove programs, security center) dosn't work. If I click original IE icon , ie only flashes once and immidiatley closes same with controlpanel programs.
- on the control panel list are working only admin.tools, folder options, fonts, etc. but strategic programs like firewall, system inf., add/rem. prog, security center don't work
- tried scanning with antivirus, found some problems but that didn't help
- tried system restore: 2-3 minutes desktop icons were normal again, but control panel programs didn't work however, then icons changed back again
Does anybody have had the similar problem with your xp home?
Is there any way to make it work without formating harddisk?

Thank you

Either the "exe" fix on here or the "lnk" fix should do the trick. I would start with the "exe" fix:http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...If you can't access the internet then download the reg files on another computer and Save them onto a flash drive. They should run from the flash drive on the faulty computer (double click) or you can copy them over onto it somewhere and double click them from there.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

A:Icons changed to generic icons overnight

Please try this workaround (you will need your Windows? XP SP2 CD).

(In the event that you do not have a Windows? XP CD with SP2, you will need to 'borrow' one from a friend or colleague, as the manufacturer's "Recovery Discs" will not work in this instance.)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go Start > Run ...in the box type in sfc /scannow …please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File Checker...it will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD.

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

Once finished, remove the CD and reboot your machine...all should be "Normal" (hopefully)

I was gone for a month, and left my computer on (connected to the internet). Now the icons on the desktop, application bar, and programs menu all have changed to the Microsoft Internet icon. When I double click on them explorer opens up and tries to download the program!

The icons affected are the ones that are links to the actual program. The .lnk extension points to explorer.

How do I change that back.

I'm protected by AVG anti-virus and Spybot Anti-spyware.

Thanks

Right click your Desktop, choose Properties, under the Settings tab change the color quality from 32 bit to 16 bit, click Apply/OK. Now go back and change it from 16 bit to 32 bit, click Apply/OK. This may correct your problem

After reading some of the other questions, mine seems almost silly. But this problem has me so angry, I thought I had better give you guys a try, in the hope that you can help me. For the past 8 months I have been downloading videos from youtube (I hope this isn't illegal) using Flashlynx and Prism. The end result was a video with an icon that looked like a strip of film with a scene from the video. I really like this icon, since it looked cool and helped me to make sure that I didn't duplicate downloads. Last week it all changed. I have hundreds of these videos on my hard drive and every one of them changed to a generic icon that I do not like. I have contacted the support office of Flashlynx but they have been unable to help me. How can I get back to the original icon that I really liked? Which program determines what the icon will look like? Thank you in advance for any help that you can give me.

A:Icons changed, not by me

Which program determines what the icon will look like?Click to expand...

The program that set as the default for that file type.
Double click a file and then tell us what program it opened in?

How can I get back to the original icon that I really liked? Click to expand...

Figure out what program uses the icon that you want and set it as the default, if it is a program that will in fact open these type of files.

Post a screen shot of this icon if you can!

In the morning when i go to my Computer i find that something is causing my Hard Drive to spin 90mph and according to Process Explorer it's obviously dllhost.exe as it's using 50% of the Processor. When i kill the process hard drive slows down to normal. Ran MBAM, Spybot SnD, CCleaner, and got nothing. Ran sfc/scannow, anti virus, etc. Thought it mightbe a "Rootkit". Ran TDSS Killer and it found 2 suspicious entrys. One was pfc.sys and the other was "somethin".stub I deleted both. Anyways it's still doing it each morning and NOW my Icons on my Desktop are 50% covered up with a small "Desktop Icon" on each one which is really annoying almost as much as dllhost.exe "messin' with me. Sure the solution is something simple...i just don't know whats "jumpstarting" dllhost OR what i deleted obviously that messed my Icons up...please any suggestions?...Thanx, Charlie

Go here download Tweakui. It will be in zip file. Open that and then right click on the INI file and choose install. Go to your control panel and double click on the tweakui icon, select the Repair tab and click on repair icons. That should take care of it.

Hi,
My printer was acting up and I unplugged it, then I looked at my desktop and my icons and background had changed. The background was standard red and my icons were no longer the XP icons, but those old standard icons from windows 98 or ME.

The icons have not just changed in my desktop, but everywhere in my comp except on my toolbars. I have no idea why this happened, and I have shut off and re-started my comp several times, but they haven't changed back. Does anyone know how or if I can change them back to the way they were?

thanks

All of my Microsoft program icons have changed to generic ones. I no longer see the Word, Excel, Outlook, etc icons. they have all changed to white icons. Even the icons I assigned to DOS programs have changed.
The icons are even changed when I look at a list of files in Windows Explorer.
The program associations are still active. When I double click on an Excel file it still opens Excel just like it should.

Icons for My Computer, Recycle Bin, My Computer, My Network Places, etc are all correct.
Icons for other programs - Google Earth, Street Atlas, etc are still correct.

I have scanned for viruses, malware, trojan, etc using Spybot, PC Tools Spyware Dr, Super Antispyware and malwarebytes Antimalware. Everything is clean.

This is just a cosmetic thing, but is very annoying - Please help.

Was playing with "themes", and after installing one, the icon for IE has become something odd. It appears as a manila folder, with a folder in front of it.
I tried right clicking to change the icon, but the "properties" come up as the usual Internet Explore properties, not an icon properties.

Any thoughts?

FYI, removing the theme and returning to a standard XP theme did not reset the icon.

Hope everyone had a good Turkey day. Today my problem is related to the icons on the right side of my computer. The middle icon, a star, show the sub topics favorites, feeds and history. In the past I could tap the history icon and get a weekly run down on what sites I visited. Now all I get is a sub topic of search history and a box to type in what I want to search. I want my favorites, feeds and history to work like they use to. Can anyone help?

A:History icon changed

It is only the history tab that doesn't work correctly, correct? Try this:

Open IE> Click on the Favorites (Star) icon> Click on the History tab> Click the little down arrow to the right of Search History and choose another choice from the drop down list (whichever suits your needs better)

That should do it. A Guy

(I searched but didn't find a thread about this specifically)

When I first got this new PC (has Win7x64), the drive it booted from (system drive) had a different icon than the other drives, with a Windows logo on it.

Now after a few weeks (and Windows Updates) it's changed to a regular drive icon:

Is there any way to bring back the original system drive icon?

This box is destined to be a multi-boot box, it would be nice if that functionality was back so I could tell at a glance which is the boot drive when in an Explorer window.

Hello Brad,

You could check to see if you have autorun.inf file as in OPTION ONE of the tutorial below. If so, delete it. If not, then you can use the path below in OPTION TWO of the same tutorial below to change the icon back.

icon path:
C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll,-36
