Turn Off Monitor, Turn On Later and Black Screen, PC Still Running

Q: Turn Off Monitor, Turn On Later and Black Screen, PC Still Running

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what else I can do besides lose more hair at this point. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks...

Hey i'm new here and i've had A computer for like 2 years and it used to work but once I left it alone for a month I went to turn it on and it didnt work.... the monitor just stayed black....i checked every cord and there all in and I think it has something to do with the motherboard(i barely know anything about computers at all).. the mother board is a KM4M-V/KM4AM-V/KM3M-V series micro ATX mainboard and thats all I could think of putting in but I have every bit of info on it so if u need more info on the machine I can tell u it. Any suggestions PLEASE HELP! Just remember I dont know a lot but I do know more than an average chuck

I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I think it might be my power supply because when I first put it together I didn't plug in the smaller power connection to the motherboard and the same thing is happening, black screen. It's like my computer isn't giving my monitor any feed. I will have more info when I get home. I can't get in to bios or safe mode.

Okay so this occuring problem started off on last Saturday when i was playing game. My computer froze, which forced me to force shut down. When i turn on, it seems fine, so i decided to retest it by playing another game. It froze again. So this time, thinking its my graphic driver, i went to check if my driver was up to date, which it was. I even tried to remove graphic card and reinsert it in but it didnt resolve the issue. I checked the gpu, by testing my old one, which has worked for me before i change to my newest one, but the same problem occurred. After this, i went to check reliability report, and it said its hardware error (livekernelevent 117). Confused, i went to do some research and it said to update driver which its already up to date. I tried reinstalling windows twice, once by myself and the other time was with helps from a Window answer desk's assistant. It seems to have solved the problem but I was wrong, and it crashed again. I did some more researched and found other alternative, to clear CMOs and reset bios on motherboard, but it didnt help. Now my monitor wont evem turn on. My monutor is set to turn on automatically when i turn my pc on. Im running out of leads and am desperate for helps or tips on what is the possible problem here.

ControlPanel>Settings>PowerOptions set everything to Never. If there is a Hibernate tab, go to it and disable hibernation. Then go into ControlPanel>Settings>Display and turn off your screensaver altogether. If your problem is solved, you can put the screensaver back on, altho I would choose a diff one that what you had first. If the problem stays gone, you could go back to the orig screensaver and see if it is ok.

After installing Windows Service Pack 2 on our other computer, it started to freeze up, the screen would go black and it won't turn off. Control/alt/delete won't work, the power button won't shut if off, all we can do is pull the plug. We uninstalled ServicePack2 thinking that was the cause, but it still randomely does this. Sometimes it does it while playing various games and other times when just surfing the web. No warning of any kind, just a black screen and not being able to turn it off at all. I was wondering if system restore back to before we installed the Service Pack would work, or reinstsalling windows (a huge pain) or complete reformate (a bigger pain). Anyone have an easier suggsetion?

There is no harm in trying system restore as it is reversible.

I have a HP Probook 4710s. The screen remains black when I turn the computer on. The other lights work, like the power button and caps lock while turning on. It happened suddenly, the screen worked perfectly earlier. I tried unplugging the charger, taking out the battery and holding the power button etc but it did not work. What could be the problem and how can I solve it? Thank you

A:Black screen (won't turn on)

Shine a light on the screen and see if the image is there but just faint. If so, the backlight failed. Otherwise, I'd suspect a video issue (video chipset, cabling, screen).

Ok this is kind of weird. Ive recently installed a game and while playing I miss typed some keys (which are near the region of ESC, including that one, the one next to 1, and a sleep button). Somehow, a combination of miss typed keys lock my computer. It stops, then the screen goes black, and the CPU light starts to blink and the fan runs likes crazy.

Then nothing..., i cant turn the CPU off, cant restart it, cant press any key to do anything. The computer just wont turn off. The only way to restart the system is to pull the plug, but that has caused my some trouble already.

It has been happening to me sometimes (i think around four or five times) and i need to know what is happening to my computer and how to solve the problem without pulling the plug if this comes to happen again.

Thank you very much for the help (and sorry for my bad english)

Hi.

I currently own 3 pc's and all of them now have the same problem. When i switch the power on from Stand By, the computers power up however the screen stays black and doesn't even boot up (I have tried switching the computer fully off).

Even after turning the computer on it doesn't go to boot, the fan switches itself on at high speed and screen stays black.

I have 3 different operating systems all windows on each of the pc's however on my sony laptop, i can counter this by starting with no constant power by using the battery only. this however doesn't work on the acer laptop of HP touch smart.

If you have any ideas, please cna you help.

Thanking you in advance.

My computer was dusty and may have been overheating. The fans were operating very loudly and i tried to turn on the screen but it is black. I cleaned the dust, and it still will not bring anything up on the screen. The fans work and i can hear the drives working. I tried changing the psu, cleaning the heatsink, and reseating everything. and removed the battery and put it back in to reset the bios. Nothing has worked so far. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated? Is it possible that i fried my motherboard or processor?

I turn on my computer, it begans to start up, and then the moniter just goes black and won't show the desktop or anything. It has done this every day for the past week or more and it's getting harder and harder to get onto the computer. What I do is turn the moniter on/off until it shows me a glimpse of the desktop, and then I mess with the screen saver power options (while it continues to keep going black and I have to turn the moniter on and off to get glimpes of what i'm doing), and eventually it just stops going black and works for the whole rest of the day until the next morning. I checked the FAQs and I heard people with the same situation mention video cards, but I'm not that great with computers and frankly I don't even know what that is. Help?

My computer that i own isn't working properly. Firstly, its about 4-5 years old the power button gets stuck. I've been fiddling with it from the outside to come out all the way since if it goes in all the way and doesnt come out, it keeps restarting. When i wiggle it out, it starts and goes.

Now onto my problem now. When i start up my computer, a screen pops up allowing me to press F1 for setup. if i don't click F1, my computer goes to a black screen with a _ blinking in the top right. I can't do anything from that point and when i press keys too many times, it starts beeping after i hit any key again.

Anyways if you guys could help me, I would be very thankful!

A:Turn on my computer, black screen

sounds like it may be time for an upgrade

have you made any hardware changes or installed new device drivers?

from what you describe it seems like the system is having some issues booting the operating system from the hard drive, or there could be another hardware fault causing the hangup... like the memory or motherboard itself. if you are able to view the POST screen upon startup (which displays all of the system information and keys to access BIOS etc...) then you may be able to boot from a CD-ROM to run repairs or possibly boot into safe mode by repeatedly striking the F8 key after the POST screen appears.

I have a Dell Latitude C610, with Win2K. My hubby says he played a music CD he made recently & the laptop froze up. He says the CD played OK. He took it out, laptop still froze, turned it off for a few hours, & when he tried again, nothing would work. The CD plays OK in my desktop, so it seems that's not the cause, was just trying to accurately report what happened.

I come home, check it out, the screen is black, and it's still warm, & I can't turn it off. The on light is lit, the battery light is blinking. I tried unplugging it, but it stayed on using the battery. Nothing happens when I push the power button. I know a black screen isn't a good sign. I'd just like to turn it off & back on again, that works with my desktop.

What else should I try?

Recently my computer keeps giving me a same problem whereby the screen would suddenly turned totally black or yellow colors upon booting up or sometimes when i am already in the window.

For the about the first 20 secs when the screen goes down, im still able to hear the sound of the applications running on the window and then after that no sound is heard.Even so the CPU light is still running and the only way to solve it would be restarting my com for a few times. I am not too sure if it's my graphic card giving me the problem.

I am currently using a GeForce 8800GT and its less then a year old. Its only after the incident, i went to update my drivers but the problem still exists.I am a lehman in this area, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Greetings all, so lately I've been having some problems with my Dell Vostro A860 that runs Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit service pack 2. Anyway recently I've been having problems with my laptop. I often leave my laptop on while I'm around the house doing things, mainly it's downloading or running a virus check, but when I return the screen is off (which is good, I set my screen to turn off after a few minutes) but when I try to get the screen to turn on again by pressing a key on the keyboard or clicking the touchpad or moving it nothing happens. I can't get the screen to turn back on and so I am forced to hard reset my laptop which I really don't like to do. When I start up the computer again it works fine but I notice that not much of my downloads or scan have been completed like the computer froze pretty early on.

At first I thought it was a virus or something so I posted on the appropriate forums on here, here is the link to that topic:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic414131.html

Unfortunately it appears that this isn't the problem so now I'm here trying to find help to resolve this issue. I hope someone out there knows the cause of this problem and a way I can fix it. Thanks in advance!

Sometimes electrical components needs to have all power sources removed and reintroduced to work properly.  Try performing a hard reset first, if it doesn't work then we'll move to the next step.  To Perform A Hard Reset Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for  5 seconds); (if the computer doesn't power on, move to the next step)Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook.  There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.

I have a Compaq Notebook PC with Windows 7. I was using it the other night and i locked it as I always do, and I opened the lid the next morning and the screen was black. So I shut it down with the power button and turned it back on, but the screen was still black. I don't know what to do with it. I haven't even had it a year. I bought it February of 2010. I really need help, I have no clue what to do... Please help!!

A:My laptop will turn on, but the screen is black.

Well, you should of posted in Windows 7 forum, so I'll move it for you. But being it is less then a year old, and I've never heard of a laptop with less then a year of warranty, you should contact Compaq about getting it repaired. But things to check, is the brightness turned up? There should be a key on the keyboard that'll adjust the brightness levels. Also, most Windows laptops have an option to turn the screen off when connected to an external screen. Look for that button on the keyboard and cycle it a few times and see if your screen comes back to life. Also, find a monitor to plug into the video out port on the laptop and see if you get a picture on it.

I was playing a game on my PC while it was storming out and the power surged. Before I could unplug my pc the power came back on and my computer started back up. After starting back up it said installing update do not turn off the computer. I waited until it was done then it brought me to a black screen with a Windows logo and a circular loading bar. I waited somewhere between 5-10minutes before holding down the power button until it turned off. Upon turning the computer back on all the fans would work and everything it would show the blue screen that says to press esc then brings me to a black screen where it would have a _ mark in the top left and beep non stop. It isnt a long beep or anything its just multiple beeps non stop until I turn it off. I have tried taking out the ram and putting it back in but it just keeps beeping. I did a mem test and it showed that nothin was wrong with the ram. The beeps are high pitched and very fast. I have a video showing what happens if there is a way to post it.

So in my previous post I had issues with the video card overheating (I think)

It wasn't corrupt drivers because I managed to uninstall the drivers and install the latest drivers for my video card (which took me about 6 hours to accomplish due to the pixelated screen of death)

Anyways, I cooled off the room and put a big fan on the side of my case and everything seemed to work just fine until I started getting blue screens quite frequently (like every hour or so).

One of them listed as (if I recall) IRQ_LESS_THAN_something_something (I think)

Others had something to do with win2k.sys and some other file was on another blue screen.

So I system restored back to where it was working without blue screens. I eventually got the pixelated screen of death again and I know for a fact my video card wasn't overheating at that point (I least maybe I don't think it was).

So I restarted it like normal and it showed my MoBo's logo screen and after that it went black/blank. I restarted more times for the next 30 mins and now it just shows a black/blank screen as soon as I turn the computer on. No MoBo beep, no keyboard LED's light up...nothing.

Everything else still works like the fans, the CD-ROM lights up/ejects, the MoBo light is on, etc. It just doesn't do anything passed that point. So I took out the battery to refresh my CMOS and left it out for 10 mins or so, put it back in...nothing.

Any ideas on what is going on?

HI,
My problem started back when i tried to install windows 7 on another disk, but it would not. Now i did this while my primary windows 7 hard drive was already istalled. after i gave up on trying to get windows to install onto this secondary hard drive, i rebooted the computer to find that my primary ssd would not load windows, and simple came to a black screen that said:

Remove disks or other media.
Press any key to restart

then i would press a key and it would say:

Reboot and select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.

I have no recovery disk and most definitely do not understand what remove disks or other media means because I removed the windows installer dis and tried again but nothing happened. Please help, i am so confused, thankyou.

i have just put in a graphics card (asus EN9800gt 512mb hybrid power) and wen i turn it on all i get is a black screen! what could the problem be?
I have a 500w pc and its a very brand new pc with 64bit windows 7 and intergrated grraphics.

also note that the first time i put it in i forgot to put in the 6pin adaptor and when i turned it on it made a big beeping noise. could this have stuffed up the card? becoz wen i remove it, the pc works fine

help please???

A:put in graphics card bt only black screen wen turn on!!

i think ive had this problem before. the beeping sound you heard was I believe the POST telling you that something is wrong with the graphics card. This is expected since you forgot to plug in the power. For me, it turned out that my power supply was a bust. Everything else turned on fine but there was never anything on the screen. Replaced the psu and everything booted up. See if you can find a replacement? Your wattage seems to be fine.

A:Please help latitude e5430 won't turn on and black screen

Hi Maffemzellienbump,
I’d suggest that you follow the steps mentioned below and check for issue resolution.

Switch off the computer.
Disconnect the AC adapter from the system.
Remove the battery from the computer.
Press and hold down the power button for 15 seconds.
Then connect back all the peripherals and check for issue resolution.

Also, I would suggest you reseat a few components, like memory, hard drive and optical drive and see if that makes a difference. In the link below punch in the system service tag or express service code and you can access the user manual for removing and reseating components. http://dell.to/18r60nI Please let me know if this helps.

I left it on over night and turned it off and back on this morning and it came up until I logged into windows then went black again. Its like its in hibernation as the fans arent on and its silent although when I stripped it down the hard drive was still going when I listened.
Can someone tell me whats wrong?
I have tried the take the battery out / hold power for 60 seconds put the wire back in with battery out etc, tried external monitor thing, tried different ram etc but nothing at all.
Any suggestions?

I had to replace the mother board on mine. It sounds like yours is doing the same thing mine did, I would suggest replacing it yourself if possible or if you are unable to find someone who can it is very easy to replace. Also you will need a new dvd player it sounds like yours is no good. But who ever fixes your pc should be able to confirm whether it is good or bad.
I hope this helps
You can find the mother board online for about $150 and 20 for a DVD Rom Drive

i am using my laptop to report this.cause i can't use the one with the black screen.HELP!!!!!! when it first comes on its like it tries to start but just stays black.can it be fixed or do i have to buy a new screen?(i'm not sure if its called the screen or the monitor.i just know that when i turn the tower on,there is no picture .

A:black screen after i turn my tower to my other computer on.r

If you do not see the message "No Signal" on the monitor screen, very likely it's the monitor itself which is faulty or "dead".To check if it is indeed the monitor which needs replacing, connect it to your laptop if possible (there should be a VGA port on one side of your laptop so you can connect the monitor using the same VGA cable that connects monitor to your PC). If the monitor does not work on your laptop either, you need a new monitor. However, if your tower is not starting up it won't be a faulty monitor. There is something wrong inside the tower. Get someone to check it over, maybe needs a new PSU (Power Supply Unit) which fits inside the tower.Do not rush out to buy a new monitor if the tower is not starting up as the problem will be inside the tower.message edited by phil22

I can boot fine in safe mode, then I tried disabling the display adapter and rebooted. This worked fine, turned it back on rebooted and it boots to black screen, then eventually says no signal and automatically reboots.

I'm guessing it's a driver issue? I did download the new nVidia driver for my card (GTX 570) but that was a few days ago, and it has been working fine up until today. So I don't really know what the issue is then.

Any body know how I would go about fixing this?

EDIT: Tried a clean installation of the latest nVidia drivers and still no luck.

Recently my hard disk stuffed up (on my pentium 3 550mhz) so i changed it with another hard disk from a pentium 2.
i plugged that in and it worked fine. I then decided to take the cdrom and floppy from the p2 and plugged it in to the p3.
i also changed cases.
i used the cables from the p2 and found the screen would not turn on when i turned the comp on.
i changed the ide cables to the ones for the p3. It worked this time but only with the floppy detached.
when i plugged the floppy in, the screen wouldn't turn on again. and now even unplugging the floppy, my screen won't turn on.

what could be the reason why the screen doesn't turn on?
could it be something to do with power?
or using the wrong cables which stuffed up my motherboard?
or the floppy or cdrom?

Please help cause i'm a newbie at computers.

(i moved the motherboard back to its original case and plugged everything in the way it was originally when it did work but it still doesn't work now.)

A:monitor screen doesn't turn on

Sounds to me like it isn't POSTing, try removing everything except one stick of RAM, CPU, floppy, video card, and keyboard, if it comes on, try adding one device back till it fails again.

My computer is around 1 year old. Recently it is has started to crash randomly. This results in either the monitor enterting 'power save' and putting itself on standby or the screen locking and me being forced to do a hard reset. sometimes it can work fine for hours at a time.

I know computer crashes are widespread in their causes and the question has no simple answer. But just some info on how i can start trying to fix this problem would be great.

Thanks

Hi -

Help. Ever since I had a crash a few months ago my monitor wouldn't shut off. I set it over and over to do so with the power settings, but no good. I didn't know about you guys and I just shut the whole computer off every night. Here's a weird thing. I could swear that I used to have the options of hibernate and stand by with this machine . It's a Sony Vaio with all the hardware on it. It's just mine - no network. I don't think I'm confused back to more than 5 years ago. I just let it all go. I think I read that the best thing was to shut it all off and that's what I've been doing for a long time, even before the crash. I went to Microsoft and looked where I was told and no hibernate or standby. I put it in search and got a whole lot of files that ended in .inf

Well, since yesterday my screen saver won't start up at the set 20 minute time. At least I didn't have to turn off the monitor all the time because the screen saver would go on during the day.

Today I posted some other problems that are popping up lately in the XP forum. I hope this isn't the end. The screensaver is another new problem. Any help is always appreciated. OH, this is good, it won't let me post as it says I just posted 10 secs ago. I posted something this morning. GREAT. It's the end.

So previously my laptop would go black just after the Windows 7 Welcome screen, the mouse pointer turning in that wheel
(I could access the main windows background only through safe mode)
I found a popular method that seemed to have worked for a lot of people.
I removed the battery, held the power button down for 2 minutes, put the battery back in, plug in power cord) but now the screen goes black straight away, doesn't even get to the welcome screen.

Any ideas?

Hi and welcome to the Forum
Depending on what you were doing before this first happened it loos as if you might have a RAM problem. I would suggest running Memtest to see what that finds. Here's a link to how to use Memtest by making a bootable CD:
Memtest86 - Download now!
You need to run memtest for a long time, at least overnight! memtest will continue to run until you stop it. Run it until it finds an error. Then you need to remove one of your Memory modules so by a process of elimination you eventually find the fauty one.
If after running overnight, say up to 10 hours if Memtest has found no errors then you can assume that our RAM is OK.
After that I would run Windows Offline Defender in the same way, ie create a bootable CD from here:
Microsoft
Report back here with your findings.
When you can get into your machine it would be helpful if you fill in your System Spec details see here:

Hi, I'm having a problem with my Dell Latitude E6400. When I'm not using it for a while the screen goes black (like into a sleeping mode) like all computers and laptops do. But if it stays black for a little while, and when I go to get back on it and move the mouse around or press the keys the screen won't turn back on but the computer is running because the light on the keyboard are lit up and I can hear the fan running. The only way I can get the screen back on is if I shut it down by pressing the power button on my keyboard and turning it back on.

Can anyone please tell me what to do or what is wrong with it. That would be much appreciated. Thank you

I have a Dell computer with windows xp.
Lately, whenever I turn on my computer (only under my name on my dell-meaning my daughter doesn't have this problem under her name) I have a big black square in the middle of the screen.
And when I am done surfing the net when the computer goes back to the desktop page of my computer the big black square is replaced by whatever the last screen i was on was.
I mean it's no longer black, but if I was say, reading an article on the internet, where the black square was, is now portion of the article.
How do I get rid of this?

my other question is, sometimes when I want to click on things on the internet, I have to hit the "shift" button for it to work. How do I undo this? Why does it make me do this in the first place??

When doing a cold boot, the fans and everything come on, but there is no output to the screen, and the keyboard and mouse turn on and off repeatedly. There is a pattern to it: both come on, both turn off then on again, mouse alone turns off and on again, then both stay on.

Running Windows 8.1 x64, already wiped and reinstalled OS once. This fixed the issue for a couple weeks but now its back again.

Any idea what this could be?

Edit: There is no POST, no beeps (though I'm not sure my motherboard has a speaker at all). If I insert a boot disk like the Windows install disk, it picks it up and starts normally. I'm assuming Windows 8 suppresses the normal POST?

A:Black screen on boot, mouse and keyboard turn off and on

So by the way it sounds, if you use a boot disk you get output to the screen and everything? It will boot from the bootdisk?

It sounds like you are having OS corruption issues. I wonder if you dont have a failing hard drive.

Download Falcon Four BootCD from here

Burn that to a CD or create a bootable USB using Rufus. Download here

Boot from that. There are programs on there that will do an offline disk check. See if they come up with anything.

A:Solved: How to Turn-Off Notebook Screen While Using Monitor?

Some notebook computers have reserved keys for toggling between the internal and external display. They may be marked with a symbol that resembles a TV screen. Other notebooks may use the function keys on the keyboard for the same feature.

In your case with the Dell notebook, try holding down the <Fn> key and then tapping the key that is marked with an F8. If that does not work, please give us the exact model name and number of the notebook.

Hello,

I have problem on my Windows XP Professional SP3 desktop system.
The monitor never goes into screen saver mode on its own, and doesn't turn off as I scheduled it to do on the Display properties and Power schemes.

I tried many different things: changing the scheduled times for the screen saver and the Turn off feature, using different power schemes and screen savers (or even no screen saver at all), Unplugging my wired Razor USB mouse, ending different kinds of known expendable windows processes in the task manager.

I know the problem isn't with the monitor itself because:
A. I just changed into a different monitor recently and it was the same problem with my previous one (while the new one was turning off just okay with its previous XP desktop computer).
And B. The Screen Savers are working when I click the preview button in the Display Properties window.

I have this problem for several months now. At first only the screen servers didn't work but now it won't turn itself off either.
It really is an annoying problem because the only way I have to turn the monitor off now is either by turning off the computer itself or unplugging the monitor from the electricity (which just wouldn't do).

One more thing, I've just recently (a few weeks ago) replaced my old Dual core AMD system with a new Mobo, a Pentium Dual processor and new RAM + DVD RW drive.
I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the monitor not shutting down/going to... Read more

A:While updating Graphics driver is the screen suppose to turn black?

Yes it is normal. What is happening is the old driver is being uninstalled before the new, and the brief black screen is the time between that happening.

After installing an automatic update, my labtop was working perfectly fine last night i closed it i believe around 1230 am. Ive been trying to turn it on since 7pm today and it will start turning on and not show the logo and keeps making beeping noises. Is there any way I can fix this please

A:Dell Inspiron 11 3000 won't turn on and beeps 5 times with black screen.

Hi,
The 5 beeps are normally a signal that there is a problem with the CMOS battery that powers the BIOS on the system (among a few other things).  This is not the battery that you think of that powers the system on, off, etc., when it's not plugged into an ac adapter.
Try this:  Remove the battery and AC adapter from the system, then hold the power button down for 10 to 30 seconds.  That should remove any residual power in the system.  Then plug the AC adapter back in and see if the system powers up at that point.
A quick question, when you say it won't show the "logo" are you referring to the Dell logo or the Windows one?  You may also want to see if you can go in and reset your BIOS if you actually see the Dell logo show up.
Let me know how those two steps go and if it helps or not.  If not, please let me know if you're seeing the Dell logo at all when it starts up.  And also which version of Windows that you're running on the system.  If you're seeing the Dell logo but Windows won't start it leads towards something different than the CMOS battery, although the 5-beeps would seem to indicate that was the problem.

Pretty much everything seems to have broken or failed on me this week and now the thing I need most, my computer, appears to have followed suit. When I turn it on it gives me the normal blue HP screen followed by the normal Windows XP startup screen and then...black. Nothing. No noise, no cursor, no keys do anything, just a black screen and nothing more. Tried manually shutting off and turning back on again, same thing. I *really* need to use this computer within the next 12 hours or so for some time-critical tasks so it would be MUCH appreciated if I could get some help fixing this.

Okay now i have no idea what the model is for my mother board, and no idea what type of AGP slot it has, but it is empty because atm i have an onboard NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX INtegrated GPU. my computer atm is an AMD Athlon XP 2600+, 512 MB PC2700 333 cl2.5 DDR (its also a crapy HP Pavilion if that helps). I bought the computer back in september 2003 and it was refurbished if that helps in determining what type of AGP slot it is.

here is the video card i bought:http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1043623&sku=C460-8006
(ya i know, noot good or anything, but i dont need some super good video card with my computer) i only wanted to get a new one because when i bought new ram (2x512, PC3200 400 cl2.5 DDR ram) it didnt work in my computer when ever i ran a game like cs, it would always shut down or restart my computer.

I know i need to disable my previous driver for my onboard video card, but i did that and installed the video card and checked to see if it worked by plugging in my monitor, mouse and keyboard and turning it on, and nothing came up on my monitor.

The help would be greatly appreciated, because i also want to run another game on my computer (like HL2 or CS:S because CS 1.6 just aint enough )

And if you are able to determine somehow what type of AGP slot it is, would the AGP 8x i bought work on it? or would it have voltage issues that are causing it to not work.

thanks

A:PC crash, speakers buzzz, screen stops or go black and can't turn it off just plugout

Holding the power button does not turn it off? Does it work normally and only breaks when this happens? If so, you have a bad motherboard or power supply. Unfortunately there's no diagnostic tests to confirm which one it is. If you are willing to take the risk, check your OEM vendor's website for any possible BIOS update.

The keyboard on my new Windows 10 Dell laptop stopped working completely so I tried shutting down. Windows seems to have shut down but the computer won't turn off (the keyboard backlights are still on and the fans are going). Pressing and holding down the power button (even for over a minute) does nothing, I can't pull the battery as it's inbuilt.
Is there anything I can do other than waiting for the battery to run itself out? And what if it doesn't turn on again after that?

Hello everyone, I have an HP Envy j100t which I purchased in 2014. ever since yesterday it's been starting but the screen remains pitch black, no display at all. It won't get to start up page, just remains a blank dark screen even though the power light is on and there's no battery issue because it was on charge all night and the AC adopter is still in.   I keep on having to get to get to the BIOS recovery screen, letting that update, and then it proceeds to restart. However when it restarts, it never gets to start up and there is the same dark screen- no display.  I have to always update BIOS, take out the battery and AC adapter, put them back in, and then it will start. Or sometimes even that whole process might not restart it.  Please help!

Hi,

I've set Turn off the display setting in my power plan to 15 minutes and my monitor does turn off after that period (sometimes it doesn't!), but then, sometimes, it turns ON by itself after few minutes.

I've been Google-ing these days trying to find some solution and I came across suggestions which recommends that Allow this device to wake the computer option, located in the Power management tab, in the Properties window of the network adapter, in the Device manager, should be disabled. Also, there were suggestions that Wake on Magic packet property in the Advanced tab should be disabled, too. Unfortunately, all that did not work in my case.

Does somebody know what can cause this problem? Has anyone ever encountered such phenomena?

Thanks in advance.

A:Monitor turn on by itself after "Turn off the display" starts

Hello alokin87 & welcome to Sevenforums,

Sometimes the computer Wake from standby because of a program's updating itself. Sometimes it does wake, sometimes it does not!

Therefore it could be the Windows Media center as explained in this Hotfix from MS. You could give a try:

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-u...ly-2010-a.html

Look at post #1:

"-Do you find that your Windows 7 Computer wakes up from sleep unexpectedly at a particular time every day? If so then you might to check up if any scheduled tasks are waking your PC up."

This is my problem: I have the power saving settings set to turn off my monitor after 20 min. It does briefly turn off, only to turn on again 1 sec. later, displaying a faint very dark blue screen... It used turn off fine, but after upgrading from Windows 98SE to XP Pro I got this problem. Is this the OS or my video card?

Any clues?

Thanks all

A:"Turn monitor off" setting doesn't really turn off

Did you upgrade to XP right over the top of 98 or was it a clean install? If you did an upgrade over the top of 98 (and I know you don't want to hear this lol) then you should format and do a clean install. Upgrades rarely leave you with a stable system.

Things to try before you do that though:

1) Make sure your video card drivers are up to date.

2) Make sure Windows is updated - go to windowsupdate

3) try the system file checker (Start, Run, "sfc /scannow" [without the quotes]) to make sure your system files are intact.

Other than that I would say just do a format and install XP from scratch (to be honest, you should do this anyway if you haven't already, you'll get much better stability and performance).

Please help.

A:Flat Screen Monitor will not turn "ON"

It sounds like your system is not booting. As a quick test of your monitor, connect it to the system you are using now. That will tell you if the monitor is working or not.
FWIW I had a viewsonic 22" monitor from around the same time; it stopped working about 6 months ago.

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

This is driving me crazy. My HP has Windows 7 and everytime it connects to the internet (wireless connection) Windows Live Messenger opens down in the left hand corner taskbar near the start menu. I close it, and fifteen minutes later it will open again.
I opened the options and unchecked the boxes pretaining to 'Run Windows Live Messenger when windows starts' but it still repeatedly opens. I use hotmail, but i really have no use for Messenger. The program is not listed under add/remove programs. Someone please help me turn this thing off.

I can't turn my computer on. The fans and lights turn on for a second and then turn off. a few seconds later they'll turn back on and then turn back off. I've had this computer for 4+ months now, i built it myself. it recently started doing this but i'd just turn off the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and turn it back on and it woould fix it. now it doesnt fix it anymore. i've re-slotted the RAM (Random Access Memory) and pushed it in firmly, but that hasn't done anything. i've tried different power outlets and pushed everything into the MOBO (Motherboard), i havent messed around with CPU (Processor) because that's just a pain in the a**... i was wondering if there was anything else i could do before having to take it into a local repair shop, lol.

as for my computer specs

CPU (Processor): Fx-6300 AMD
GPU: R9-270x AMD
RAM (Random Access Memory): 8GB Ballistix sport
MOBO (Motherboard): ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
PSU (Power Supply Unit): Corsair X500 w 80+
Case: Rosewill GALAXY

thanks

A:Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

First, I would unplug everything that isn't necessary. Everything external except for the keyboard and monitor. Internally, just leave the CPU, RAM and video card installed. See if it turns on. If not, you might try and test the power button. Disconnect the power button from the mobo. If the pin headers allow for it, use the reset button as the power button. If not, you can use a flat head screwdriver to power on the computer (cross the two pins for the power button with the blade of the screwdriver). If you do this, just be very careful. Touch only the power button pins and nothing else! You could easily damage components by touching the screwdriver to the wrong thing.

Some motherboards have a power button right on the board that you can press to power on the computer. I looked at a pic of your board and didn't notice one.

If that doesn't do it, plug the power button back in. You might try and play around with the RAM. I don't know if you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM, but try and boot the computer with only one stick of RAM at a time. If there's a bad stick, you'll find it through this process of elimination.

If none of the above works, then it might be a bad PSU.

Running Windows Vista Ultimate.

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

I am posting this problem now, although after searching the forums there are some things I should try when I get back to the problem computer, such as starting in Safe Mode or reinstalling my video driver. I'm not sure I have seen this exact problem though.

It is a Compaz 700 series laptop running WinXP Home with 256mb RAM. All WinXP updates are installed. I'm running eTrust antivirus and on an encrypted wireless network behind a router, run AdAware frequently and delete everything it finds.

I've had the computer for over two years and this problem has starting occurring within the past couple of months. It used to happen only occasionally and seemingly randomly, but now it happens every time I start up, usually within a couple minutes, and with no applications running according to Task Manager.

There will be a loud click or pop sound effect, the desktop will flash black and white, and then various items will turn black - usually, the taskbar and various (some or all) icons on it, Start menu, and the menu bars of any windows that are open. The blacked-out menu items and taskbar icons still work - that is, if I double-click in the clock area of the taskbar I get the Date & Time control panel and if I click in the Close or Minimize area of an open window's menu bar, that will happen. Also, if I open new windows, those menu bars are not black, but sometimes they turn black eventually. However, there's no way to get rid of the black, short of rest... Read more
