Centralized reporting from end points where EMET is deployed in a large group(100/200 nodes)

Q: Centralized reporting from end points where EMET is deployed in a large group(100/200 nodes)

Apart from the handle to the events, is there any other reporting mechanism built into latest EMET tool. Want to aggregate all information(reports) to a central console.
What is ERS? Is it some kind of dashboard provided by Microsoft?

We have a GPO called EMET Deployment and Configuration.  Inside this GPO is a computer configuration > assigned applications, EMET 5.2.  Can I just repoint this to EMET 5.5 and will clients automatically update at next GPO refresh interval?
Or will they update at next restart?
In here is also under Administrative Templates > Windows Components > EMET there are some application configuration, default action and mitigation settings, default protections for popular software, reporting, system aslr, system dep and system sehop
GP elements defined.  Will these elements automatically be configured in EMET 5.5?  I installed EMET 5.5 on my workstation and when I click on the group policy element and click on the apps button it just doesn't seem right.  It shows a list
of the following
** devals.
APP1
APP2
APP3
APP4
APP5
APP6
APP7
Also when I refresh the main EMET 5.5 screen it doesn't show that any process is running EMET.  I'm in chrome now and that I know should be running in EMET based on "Default Protections for Popular Software" set to enabled in the group policy.

Thanks for your help!

Hello everyone,

I am just wondering what you are doing for EMET Enterprise reporting? I work on a university with about 2K machines and we are entertaining the idea of using EMET's audit feature to monitor machines for active exploits. We are aware of the option to set
up event forwarding to a collection machine but wondered if other options were out there that I hadn't found yet.

If you have any other suggestions please let me know as the event forwarding is not an ideal solution for us at the moment.

Thanks!

I am working to configure EMET within Group Policy before deployment but I now have an error at the bottom that states: "DEP/ASLR changes are unsafe and ineffective by default..." Current settings are: DEP=Always On, SEHOP=Application Opt Out,
ASLR=Application Opt In. Any recommendations on how to remove the error?

I am unsure where to report bugs so I'm mentioning one here. If there is a more appropriate forum then feel free to point me that direction.
EMET 5.5 beta on Windows 10 64 bit will fail to load on reboot after an install if group policy editor has been used to aggressively remove "features" from Windows. One notable problem is disabling Cortana in group policy editor. EMET on my box
really doesn't like that. This is unfortunate as I don't expect Cortana will ever be enabled on any of the boxes I oversee.

Hi There,

I have read a few of the stickys relating to large amounts of data and malware and it says not to follow the procedure as it was for that user only, so I hope I'm doing the right thing here by posting my own thread?

I have for the past month or so wondered why my ADSL cap is reached almost near the beginning of the month and see that large amounts of data are being transferred up, for instance just yesterday, I downloaded 1GB and also uploaded 911MB which I know both are not correct!

How am I able to determine what is sending this data, so that I can disable, delete, uninstall it? I also don't know if the stats on the line are accurate?!?

I've run Windows Defender and Norton 2012 Reputation Scanners and all seems fine.

Please help, I'm unsure of whether some malware has crept into my system undetected.

Kind Regards,
Riaan

Fix Windows 7 SP1 Slow Startup Due to Large Number of Restore Points

Fix Windows 7 SP1 Slow Startup Due to Large Number of Restore Points - Softpedia

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2555428/

The Redmond company confirmed the issue and noted that impacted users have created a large number of restore points, a move which cause the slowing down of the startup process.
According to the software giant, affected customers are most likely using large hard disks in addition to create too many restore points on their machines.

Microsoft did not explain just how slow the startup process gets, but it appears that boot performance degradation is sufficient for users to become aware that something it’s going on.

“This issue occurs because the boot plan for the ReadyBoot feature exceeds the size limit of 512 kilobytes (KB). Each restore point creates a snapshot of Windows that Volsnap.sys must validate during the startup process,” Microsoft explained.

“When you create many restore points, the boot plan for the ReadyBoot feature eventually exceeds the size limit of 512 KB, and cannot be stored. Therefore, startup I/O operations are not precached, and the startup process is slow.

Well, I don't think 50 is a big number - but I do agree 50 restore points are really more than what one (read: I) need.

That explains a bit or two. Will either take down these restore points to a sane number or apply this patch. Unsure which of them, but I will definitively work on this.

Hello,

I have ACT 2009 through a remote server. Whenever I try to send a group email to a large current lookup (over 70 emails), the system locks up and crashes and I lose the email. The only work around is to divide the lookup into smaller sets of emails and send multiple emails.

Any help as to why this is happening? It also happened on older versions of ACT.

Thank you,

A:ACT email locks up with large group emails

ACT! (and Outlook) will do this as they run out of resources.

To do email merges from ACT! 2005 and later use either MergeMaster! or SwiftPage

For ACT! 5/6, use MergeMaster!

I am trying to figure out some things going on with my computer, which is on Vista 64 home premium SP/2. I keep getting a message every so often that "IP Helper" has shut down (stopped working). When I go into services and "refresh", IP Helper almost always appears to still be running. However, a large group of other services seems to shut down as a group and I can't figure it out. I know that services, even those started and running "automatic" MAY shut down, if they are not being used. However, it doesn't seem to be the case.

These are the services which "turn off" by themselves as a group:

Multimedia Class Scheduler (not always)

I'm confused and wondering if anyone can shed some light on why this is occurring. Oftentimes, when this occurs, I also get a lot of "access denied", the "service is not accepting control messages" or "invalid pipe state" messages when I try to start or stop services, processes or run commands. Occasionally, I seem to retain "control" and can turn the services back on and so on without further problems.

Since deploying EMET 5.2 via group policy and taking standard application default values exept for EAF on IE 11 (So IE opens in Windows 10), I have an issue with Photoshop 12.0.4.0 opening on a users Windows 7 Professional workstation.  The event log

What would be the first thing you would change in EMET under the group policy to take off of Photoshop.exe?  Would it be EAF, because that fixed IE 11.  Would it be something else?  There's multiple things it could be, but whats the most common
protection that may solve this so I don't spend hours updating group policy, gp refreshes and testing?

Hey guys,

I hope i m posting in the correct thread, so my problem is that i m looking for some enterprise level network management tool, to centralize program updates for end user . The basic idea to roll out updates from a controlled environment for programs like mozilla, java updates, everything what the end user should update periodically, but without the problem of restarting and pausing their work on their pc. This would be for windows pc s . I know windows server has WSUS, to rollout windows updates, but i want to manage all updates.
Any ideas, about a product existing which could do this , be it payed or a free one ? ( i m guessing there s a slight chance for existing for free something of this caliber)

Thanks alot,

Hi,

I'm contemplating configuring a Windows 7 system I have sitting here as a central virus scanner. I'm looking at two concurrent scenarios;

(1). Scan files downloaded by family members
(2). Run scans across my server from the central machine

For (1) I can easily set all download programs like Free Download Manager, DAP, Getright or whatever to always save to a drive on the virus testing machine. Infected files would be sent to a quarantine folder, and clean files would be sent to a "clean" folder.

Likewise for (2) a scan of the map drives each night is easy to set up, though I need a list of files to ignore to prevent false positives.

A couple of questions though;

1. How to make Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome always save to the testing machine, and not to the local machine

2. Any recomendations on what software might offer the best security and flexibility (and I know there are litterally dozens out there, but I'm hoping some one who has worked in corporate environments who use similar virus techniques might have some valuable insights and experiences to share)

3. I'd like to have alerts sent to my machine if anything undesirable is detected.

The network configuruation is 7 Windows 7 client systems, 1 windows XP client and 1 XP system running as a server with coldfusion and IP camera software. These are connected to a gigabit DLink switch and then a netgear WNR3500 router. All cabling and systems support Cat6. All of the Windows 7 clients ... Read more

A:Centralized virus protection for home network

Theoretically yeah, in a way it's nice.

But there are couple of problems I can spot in first look:You are running different versions of Windows (ok, not really bad problem, but may cause some uncomfortability while configuring.
If I understand you right you want AV on only one PC and no security programs on other ones..... (it's a bit problem. Maybe you will be able to protect yourself from downloads and stuff like that. But you will still be vaulnurable to attacks like browser hijack, valnurabalities on java, flash, pdf reader, Buffer overflow and so on..... ). If you manage to configure all your Internet traffic to go through the central PC, then in my opinion it will affect your Internet speed on the PC that wants to et that data. (as it will have to go through central PC first and be scanned by your AV)
But if you want to install AV (client program on all your PCs, and server program on one of them) and be able to control all of them from thr one PC. It's different situation. Then you can buy enterprise version of almost any AV and be able to do this. (I think some home user versions give this option aswell)

But, I am not really professional and I have never really managed enterprise enviroment, so I may be mistaked. those were just my first thoughts.
So let me read more about situations like this, maybe I will be able to come up with solution when I know more about it

Till then consider those points...

We have an MSI all-in-one PC with touchscreen. I'm hoping to find a software package to centralize the happenings in our home. I've done some searching, but I don't really know where to start.

We're hoping to find a software package that...
- Checks multiple accounts for new mail
- Present a memo board so we can leave each other short messages
- Track a calendar so we can all add and update appointments
- Warn of upcoming birthdays, chores that are due, garbage day, etc...
- When idle, show photos, a clock, alerts, etc.
- Shopping list
- Works with the touch screen for most functions
- Eventually will control the X10 or ZWave power controllers for lights, etc.

...basically, replacing the whiteboard on our fridge, the calander on the wall, the constant nagging the kids to do their chores, and the lack of communication between us when we set up appointments, etc.

Does anyone know of software that does this? How about some Google search terms that might find some results?

Thanks!

A:Looking for centralized Home software; Memo's, chore lists, calendar..

I doubt you will find a single software package that can do everything you are asking for.

A few questions you should answer:
You have a single "Home PC", not a "Home Server" with multiple client PC's, correct?
Do more than one person need to use this single PC at the same time?
Does everybody log in and use the same Windows user account?
Are there any restrictions for some users such as children, or does everybody have Administrator authority?
Are you looking for a free solution, or are you willing to pay $$$?
Are you willing and capable to put in whatever time and effort is needed to accomplish all this.
MS Office Outlook email client can do a lot of what you want, but it is not free.
Windows Live Mail and Thunderbird are free, but have fewer features and capability.
Some of this might be done with Windows security and permissions, depending on how you are using User accounts and storing data.

You may be able to find a Business or Individual in your area that specializes in Home Automation that can help you, but it will not be free.

I hope I'm wrong and someone knows of a package like you want, but I believe if such a software package exists, it would be well known and used by a LOT of people, including me.

Hope this helps,
David

Please forgive my ignorance but I am somewhat new to networking but I have searched high and low to find an answer. I have 3 computers that spoke to each quite well and without a glitch until converting ISP service to a business line, affording me one (1) static IP Address. By configuring one of the nodes with a static IP address (within same workgroup) while the others are on DHCP, I cannot see the rest of the network. Oddly, I am able to access the internet with all computers on the network. What am I overlooking? Why cannot I not see the DHCP computers on the network and vice versa? Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What OS are you using?

If it's Windows XP is the built-in firewall on? Are the computers that don't have the static IP address pulling the proper IP addresses (I'm going to assume yes since you can get online).

Hi all,

I have to stick with the version I have; the nodes are really really small, and they're driving me batty.

Does anyone know a solution, a way to make the nodes more visible, anything, please? I don't have excellent eyesight anymore, so an advantage would be a good thing <g>

Hey, I've been using utorrents for quite a long time now, and specifically the newer version since it's been out. I had normal problems now and then with it, but nothing really major. But now for some reason, it just won't download anymore. On the bottom of the page it says "DHT (0 nodes) Login" or "DHT (Waiting to Log In)"

I uninstalled, re-installed, downloaded older version, re-installed that, downloaded newer version again and still nothing works. I tried system restore, I even tried another client like Bitcomet...Also doesn't work.

I'm surprised because it happened so suddenly. I researched a little online, most of the sites recommend forwarding the port. The thing is I tried doing that at least 10 times since the first time I started using utorrents, and I don't know how to continue the steps till the end. Also, all this time, my ports were always closed and the downloads were just fine, so I am assuming it's not necessary.

I found a lot of people online with the same problem, but no one seems to have a solution that works with me....Some help please?

Hi everyone,

I'm having some problems with my Windows XP SP3 desktop computer after a crash a few weeks ago. I took the computer in and had it repaired (the people said they did a repair installation of windows, which I had tried myself and failed). After a little tweaking, it seems to be back to normal except for two things: my webcam and my scanner needed to be re-installed, only re-installing them gave me the message "There was a problem when installing your new hardware. Your new hardware might not work properly" and now my webcam program (bundled with the webcam) "amcap" and my scanner program "Scanwizard" both say that I don't have the respective hardware attached to my computer when I try and run them. I have tried uninstalling the hardware and restarting then re-installing them and have had no success. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, and I would greatly appreciate some advice and/or technical help.

Thanks in advance,

Jomon

I know this problem is being discussed in another thread but this is a "why" issue. I just bought and installed 2 new computers, one running XP PRO and the other XP Home and they are running thru a d-link router fro sharing the DSL. Now...the 2 can ping each other, and I can see each others drives by keying into an explorer line (or run) \\computer1 and \\computer2. So I know the network is working and the computers are communicating. In fact, I've already shared the printer. Yet, when I go to network neighborhood:Computers near me, I ALWAYS get the response that my workgroup is not available. Well, clearly it is because,as I've said, I can force the issue. This windows glitch seems to have been around for generations. Anyone know why?

In a blog post written on November 9, Tor Project director Andrew Lewman went over the possible ways that over 400 hidden services on dozens of servers were located by law enforcement during Operation Onymous. While some of the servers were related to criminal activity (such as Silk Road 2.0), at least some of the servers were not—including several that were acting as infrastructure for Tor’s anonymizing network. And the only answer Lewman could currently offer as to how the sites were exposed was “We don’t know.”
That's unnerving not just to people like the operators of the many illicit sites that were taken down by Operation Onymous, it’s also of concern to anyone using Tor to evade surveillance by more oppressive governments. Activists, dissidents, and journalists, for example, all rely on the same Tor infrastructure.
“If you are an activist or a journalist in these countries, your government thinks you are a criminal,” Eva Galperin, Global Policy Analyst for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, told Ars. “And you can learn a lot about good operational security practices by watching where criminals go wrong reading the affidavits on these cases, because your government is treating you as a criminal.”

Law enforcement seized Tor nodes and may have run some of its own

This is the code in java that I have thus far.

Any help on what i am doign wrong would be wonderful, thanks.

A:Swapping Nodes in Link Lists

Here's a simpler algorithm.

node temp
node a
node b

temp = a
a = b
b = temp
Your logic works, you have some unneccesary code though. What is your error? Maybe a missing return? Also you may want to delete the lines:
tempRightNext.previous = left;
tempRightPrevious.next = left;

tempLeftNext.previous = right;
tempLeftPrevious.next = right;

You should also clean up and delete the temp pointers.

I am operating a p2p network of 5-6 machines all running windows 7 and would like to have the ability to send messages to operators in their suites.

Preferably something built in to the OS if possible and if not, then as lightweight and basic as possible. I guess I was looking for a winchat replacement. I did find a third party program called LanMSGR which seemed like it'd be pretty good but it required that the .net framework be installed. While that likely shouldn't matter, I'm using the machine and the others in the network in a post production environment running Avid Media Composer software on all machines.

This software can be quite temperamental about the environment it operates in and the fewer additions to windows and third party software applications I install the better because it makes it easier to diagnose issues as they arise if there are less variables at play.

A:Is there a program that can IM to nodes on a p2p network for windows 7

I've searched around the forums and all I can seem to find are people with one or two dead pixels (the absolute max I saw was 8). On the left side of my monitor, I have an extremely large amount of dead pixels. It's about the size of two quarters. It started out small (as a single pixel - then a single line - then a large blob). I've tried just about everything to get rid of it. I've tried massaging it out, using websites/software like www.jscreenfix.com, to no avail. I really don't have the money for a new monitor. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi

One of our support guys has deployed IE7 across our server farm (about 250 servers) without authorisation.

Problem is, some of the server already had it installed, but its kind of difficult now to see which ones.

Is there a regkey or file date/time that will give me the installation date and time for the new IE7 installations.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I have an existing .reg file that works fine on 32-bit systems. Now we are trying it on 64-bit systems, and found it only creates entries on 64-bit node (i.e. HKLM/TestKey/TestEntry), we also want it to create entries on 32-bit node (because our application is 32-bit), i.e. we want HKLM/Wow6432Node/TestKey/TestEntry. What is the proper way to do it?

Should we change the .reg file to add the part for Wow6432Node, or there is some flag/variable we can use to avoid the duplicate of all our data entries, or it can be controlled by the execution (parameters/options) command?

The existing .reg file looks like:

Quote:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TestKey\TestEntry]
"SampleEntry1"="Sample Data1"
"SampleEntry2"="Sample Data2"
.....

Thanks,

Hello PB,

Just add the Wow6432Node to that Reg file should Take it to the 64-bit i.e.[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\TestKey\TestEntry]

So

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\TestKey\TestEntry]
"SampleEntry1"="Sample Data1"
"SampleEntry2"="Sample Data2"

And save it as Reg file should do the trick

Good Luck,

I didnt see this issue in the forum search results, but hope it is not a repost.

I just recently started getting this message when I try to go to a website (racingjunk) to check email.
I am using Google Chrome.
Does this message just mean that this website is down or is something wrong with my computer? I have not seen it on any of my other regular sites.

Thanks in advance.

Hello!

We?ve launched the new Minecraft.net! Minecraft.net 2.0, if you will.

The new site has all the features you might be used to, but it?s prettier and faster. It also scales better on phones, tablets, and neon-lit-ugly-rigs with their monster monitors. Remember that, like everything Mojang, we?re going to be iterating upon this thing for the foreseeable future.

Though we?re very happy to launch Minecraft.net 2.0, it?s worth mentioning that Minecraft.net 3.0 is already in the works! That site will focus on exciting things happening in our community and provide deeper insight into the future of Minecraft and our developers. Our plan is to make Minecraft.net into a place that every player would like to visit once in a while, no matter which platform they play on - somewhere to represent what our game has become over the past few years.

But that?s some time in the future. For now, enjoy the new stylin?!

Have a lovely day, internet!

I am currently deployed in Afghanistan with the US Army. My internal hard drive crashed last week. As one can suspect, it is rather hard to get parts out here. I have a 1TB HDD that is actually a SATA internal for a desk top, but I have a dock that allows me to use it with any computer with a USB... basically an external (at this point). I have my recovery disks. I've been told there is a way to make windows 7 install to that "external" but had had no luck on finding information or instructions on how to do that. I have no working internal hard drive, my bios is good, it is set to boot external device, internal optical, internal hdd. Can anyone help?

A:Deployed in Afghanistan with bad HDD

Hello psywarrior, welcome to Seven Forums!

First, thank you for your service to your country.

I'm afraid to say there is no practical way to get Windows 7 to run, not to mention install to an (esentially) external Hard Disk Drive (HDD); if there is a way you could connect the HDD directly to the motherboard that would work, but it may make transporting it as "a whole" difficult but it would get you running.

Keep looking up!

Now I decided to expand the deployment and install the ATA light gateway on the other DCs. One I did that, the ATA center is showing suspicious activities for all users as they are accessing abnormal resources detected from the new light gateways on the
new DCs.

Is there is a way to tell the mongo database to reset its learning and start learning from scratch?

Hi,

I have a couple of problems that may or may not be related:

1) I am able to share some folders but not others on a home network running 3 xp pro service pack 2 machines. Simple file sharing is disabled. Folders like c:\windows and c:\program files I am not able to share from two of my machines. I have been able to share this folder from one machine to the two others but have no idea what's different and why I can't get the other two to work in the same way.

2) When I do ipconfig -all i get NODES UNKNOWN on two of my machines and NODES HYBRID on one machine. I'm told that's a problem but don't know how to set nodes or why I should.

3) When trying to send a console message I am only able to send a message from the machine the third machine to the third machine (sending message to myself). That's the machine that the NODE is HYBRID. Even when trying to send from the other two machines to themselves times out.

Thanks for taking a look at this.

Currently, I deployed to the Middle East. I have a Wi-Fi Connection that I am able to connect to, but I have to pay for. One of the draw backs to this is I can only conect with one device. I do not have a wired connection. Is there a way that I can connect to the internet via laptop with say another device like a nook or ipod/ipad? If more detail is needed I can provide it.

A:Deployed Soldier Needing Help

You should be able to set up a hosted wireless network to connect other wireless devices.

You can set this up using the command prompt or you can install the connectify software which makes it easier for some. The links below explains the details about setting this up.

Computer Information:
Dell XPS M1530
System type: 32 bit
Windows Edition: Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2

Background:
My computer has always worked fine behind my firewalled home router, but I'm currently 2.5 months into using it in a deployed location where many people share what I believe amounts to an unsecured network for personal use. The connection here is also extremely slow, so I may not be getting required updates from Windows or McAfee. Recently, my computer started having problems shutting down and especially in booting up. This was occuring more and more frequently and I'd have to hold down the power button, wait for it to force itself to power down, then try again. 1 time in 4 it would boot up properly and would work perfectly as long as I didn't shut it down again. Today...it started not booting up at all...no matter how many attempts...

Problem:
When I power my computer on, it briefly shows the little bar that says it is starting up at the bottom of the screen that I usually get right before I type in my password, then that bar disappears and the password box doesn't come up. The screen just stays blank, as if nothing is happening. It seems that no matter how long I let it sit, it just stops at this point. If I power it down by mashing the power button for a few seconds, I can attempt to reboot again. hitting F8 does allow me into Safe Mode.

What I've already done:
1. Before I deployed I backed up my entire machine onto my Seagate Freeagent Ext... Read more

A:Deployed...and my Vista won't boot up!

I wouldn't run the recovery disk yet. If you can get into Safe Mode and it works fine then the situation isn't too bad.

While in Safe Mode (WITH Networking) save this program to the desktop: http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe

Right-click on it -> Select run-as-admin.

Go to the Driver Tab and untick the boxes beside everything that is in that list.

Then re-boot into normal mode.

Some things will not work as they should, but if it does get into normal mode without freezing then we have made some progress.

The next step is to use the same program to re-enable some of the entries (this can be done in normal mode) and then re-boot and see if you get the freezes.

Repeat this procedure until you have isolated the cause.

I customized master installation in Audit Mode, than went into oobe by running this command from administrative command prompt: sysprep /oobe /generalize /shutdown /unattend:e:\unattend.xml. Than I captured the image with imagex, and installed it. Everything appeared to work beautifully except that the Sysprep box keeps coming up after every reboot. (And I'm not sure that it has deleted the built-in Admin account, but when I create a new account, everything I customized it with does transfer over).

I have checked to make sure it is not in the Startup folder, but it is not.

After exiting from the Sysprep several times to no avail, I let it stay on oobe and selected 'Shutdown', but on next reboot Sysprep keeps coming up. Could I just delete the executable? Does anyone have any suggestions?

A Stronger Net Security System Is Deployed.

A small group of Internet security specialists gathered in Singapore this week to start up a global system to make e-mail and e-commerce more secure, end the proliferation of passwords and raise the bar significantly for Internet scam artists, spies and troublemakers.
...
One reason for these flaws is that from the 1960s through the 1980s the engineers who designed the network’s underlying technology were concerned about reliable, rather than secure, communications. That is starting to change with the introduction of Secure DNS by governments and other organizations.

The event in Singapore capped a process that began more than a year ago and is expected to be complete after 300 so-called top-level domains have been digitally signed, around the end of the year.Click to expand...

As I understand it, with all of Secure DNS deployed, it would mean that authenticated digital certificates would no longer be vulnerable to theft! However, I am not sure whether the process could be socially engineered in such a way as to obtain an authentic digital certificate via fraudulent means - which remains to be seen. Hopefully not!

I have got almost everything the way I want it. I have created the xml for the start the way I would like it. using the group policy I have start layout looking towards the xml stored in public documents. (I know the xml works as it have used on another windows 10 unit that is not part of the image.) Not sure if it matters but when I look at the xml icon on the computer that I am having problems with, it is a plain white paper icon and not the normal white paper w/ the globe at the top. When I log in as another user, The start layout is locked, but does not have my icons on it and has a few of the standard icons like xbox, skype...which I took off. Thank you.

I've spent way too much time on this and it seems basic so I'm hoping someone here has some insight for me. The task seems simple; we need to create designated power plans that users can select between but can't alter.

In detail, we want 3 plans; High Performance, Balanced and Tablet. We want users to be able to choose whichever closest meets their needs at that moment. However we do NOT want them to be able to change the tablet plan to never sleep, for example.

We can force this with a GP Preference that resets everything every single time, but users are complaining about that because they go in and manually are changing the settings (because the interface lets them) and then our policy updates and overwrites it.
The high volume of complaints has management requiring that I disable the forms to prevent the confusion.

Is there not a way to disable the individual settings but to still enable the ability to switch between the plans?

P.S. Our environment is Windows 7/8.1/10 and the behavior seems to persist in each OS.

We have deployed around 45 new HP Probook 6360's. I have been getting many calls about BSOD issues. I'm having trouble pinpointing the issue. I'm thinking it is our VPN client, Junos Pulse, or our Proxy client, Bluecoat, but it may be driver related or memory related as well. This was related to your Blue Coat Web Filter driver ( proxyclientwebfilter64.sys) Yours is dated Jan 2012 so I suspect no newer driver is available but I would check with the developer.

An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.

NOTE: Windows 7 has a 10 concurrent user limit on connections to a shared folder.

Well, the only internet access is through QNET, which is based out of Kuwait, and Netflix, Hulu, or HBOGO won't allow me to stream because they don't have international streaming rights to other countries. I have heard that I could use a proxy server to get around and I tried a couple of free ones on the internet, but they don't work. If I copy/paste and then edit previous pivot tables all works fine, but I am trying to take advantage of the new 'distinct count' function, which it seems can only be used when a new pivot table is created and the 'Add this data to the data model' box is checked. I have not been able to find a way to add this to existing pivot tables.

I have attached a data sample which shows the problem. I hope I am missing something obvious.

Thank you in advance,
Katrin

A:Excel 2013: Pivot Tables 'group' greyed out /unable to group

I don't think you can use grouping with the add to data model function.
You could add a further column to the data and group your regions or dates that way ...

Hi,

In Comcast e-mail, I cannot find a way to delete a group, or at the very least, change the name of the group. At this moment, the group has no members. It was a test name.

I could not find an answer on their "Help" page.

I will shortly need to move a large number (20,000) very large (20-30Mb) image files and associated tiny xmp sidecar files from one hard drive to another.

MS file explorer will make a meal of this so any suggestions for alternatives please? I have several folders each containing many thousands of files as above so moving a folder en-bloc is an option rather than file by file?

A:moving large number of large files to new drive

Simply drag and drop the folder(s).

Might want to do a copy first, verify that everything did indeed get copied, and then delete the originals.

This confounds me (Windows 7 Enterprise): When I Share a folder with a group/user (it could be any group or user), that group/user is automatically added to the NTFS ACL. Why is this happening?
To recreate this scenario:
1) Examine a folder's NTFS ACL (folder properties > Security tab), I'll use C:\Drivers but it could be any folder. Note that the Everyone group is not in the NTFS ACL.
2) Share the folder by right-clicking it and choosing Share With>Specific people... Add the Everyone group and give it Read/Write permissions. Click Share and Done.
3) Examine the folder's NTFS ACL again (folder properties > Security tab). Note that the Everyone group is now in the NTFS ACL with Full Permissions.

First post here on the SevenForums! I'm only saving the tough ones for you guys! Here's the problem:

My client's computer was infected with a virus obtained via Facebook. I removed this and multiple other infections (and I'm pretty thorough with my scanning). She gets it back, starts working on it, and apparently her devices and printers icons are blank. Not missing, like with a "blank page" icon, just... blank. Here's the kicker: it only happens with large and extra large icons. It also happens with normal folder icons. When I change it to medium or lower, they come back. I've tried rebuilding the icon cache database several times, tried sfc /scannow, tried chkdsk, tried uninstalling any recent updates, etc... There have been no hardware changes, the hard drive has been tested as good (no bad sectors), her dual monitors are at a sane resolution, and I'm confident that the viruses has been removed. Trust me -- I've tried all the obvious stuff I can think of. Thanks and Good luck!

Edit: Also, I did about 30 minutes of searching through previous threads. Couldn't find a thing, but I could have missed it...

Well you probably pulled some icon cache files off that were infected but also had the L and XL icons. If sfc didnt work you could try a repair install. It will re-install only the files with different hash marks.

Sneaker.Net.

Walk to each computer and set the policies on each computer. If you are not in a domain environment you are basically have to set each one manually.

My only other thought is if all the computers are exactly the same make and model and you have some type of imaging software. You could make a standard install on one computer with all the settings you want and then use that computer to image all the other computers on your network.

Hello, I have a problem on my Windows 7 Professional machines restored from an Acronis 11.5 backup where I have a local Security Group "myGROUP" lists several members as unresolved SIDs: S-1-5-21-aaaaaaaaaaaa-bbbbbbbbb-ccccccc-1234. I need to delete
"myGROUP" but when I try to I get the error "The specified account name is not a member of the group."
It appears to be associated with the unresolved user, because I then proceed to remove the SID and hit apply to which I get the same error as before.

I've tried using CMD and Powershell to delete with no success. I've tried deleting the Unknown User profiles. I've looked in the registry to see if I can find the user profiles in the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\ but they
are not listed.
I did however notice that the SID listed in the membership of "myGROUP" was similar to one listed in the ProfileList as the start and end were the same but the middle strings were different:
Unresolved SID: S-1-5-21-aaaaaaaaaaaa-bbbbbbbbb-ccccccc-1234
ProfileList SID: S-1-5-21-dddddddddd-eeeeeeee-fffffff-1234
Could the Acronis restore have changed the SID of my user thus corrupting the local group? Is there any way to fix this?

Is it possible to set administrators to one GP and standard users to another? I want to disable Command Prompt, Task Mgr and lockout all USB and CD drives for standard users but allow administrators to access all of those.

How do i set different group polices depending on user?

Thanks in advance

A:Set Group Policy different for each user group?

Yep. As long as the policies you want to deploy to those groups are per-user (i.e. within the user configuration section of GP Editor), then you can use a tool like Microsoft's GPMC to "security filter" the effects of a GPO to a particular user group. Or, you might want to check out Desktop Policy Manager--www.sdmsoftware.com/desktop_management, which provides a simplified web interface into Group Policy and makes targeting by group much simpler (full disclosure--I work for this company).

Just migrated our office to a new Server 2012R2 Print server. about a dozen printers installed via GPO to Windows 7/64 workstations. Mostly HP's running Universal PS driver (6.1), plus the odd Kip plotter and Xerox Copier.   For maybe 4 users
out of 30 some, there is a printing problem. When a print job is sent, it appears in the queue and then is immediately deleted.   No other indication that anything is amiss. No events fire, no dimming of the icons or exclamation points,
 no error messages.
That's the consistent part. There is also some inconsistent (but still bad) behavior I'm finding on the different PCs. For some, deleting and re-running gpupdate will  bring the printers back and printing properly, but only for a short time. Sometimes
only one or two printers will print, sometimes not. Sometimes logging in as a different user will install the printers, sometimes no.
I've been fiddling with this over the past few days and gotten absolutely no where.  Now I don't know what to look at next. Any idea would be appreciated!

Q: EMET?

Should I use EMET?

A:EMET?

Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) is a utility primarily for System Administrators to help protect enterprise servers/client computers using application hardening...a security feature designed to prevent exploitation of various types of vulnerabilities in software applications. EMET can be used to apply 12 different security mitigations to other programs running on the computer. These mitigations are designed to block common techniques used in software exploits, like Return Oriented Programming (ROP) and Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR)...attack vectors used to defeat security defenses and execute malicious code on the system. For example, they can be used to bypass DEP (data execution prevention) which is used to stop buffer overflows and memory corruption exploits. What operating system do you have?Microsoft has officially stated that there is no need for EMET in Windows 10 since it already contains protections such as Device Guard, Control Flow Guard (CFG) and AppLocker that provide equivalent (or better) mitigations than EMET...see Mitigations in Windows 10With Windows 10 we have implemented many features and mitigations that can make EMET unnecessary on devices running Windows 10. EMET is most useful to help protect down-level systems, legacy applications, and to provide Control Flow Guard (CFG) protection for 3rd party software that may not yet be recompiled using CFG. For the same reason, EMET does not protect Edge browser. However, EMET 5.5 i... Read more

I've used CIS with proactive config. for several years.

AFAIK, comodo's HIPS and auto-sanbox are used for proactive defense.

but, I don't know wheather some browsers or applications' vulnerability can be protected by comodo's features or not.

MS claims EMET can do what i say. but, I saw some news that EMET was bypassed easily.

so, plz. let me know wheather comodo can protect vulnerability or not.

if it can't, I will use EMET alongside CIS.

A:Do I need to use EMET with CIS ?

CIS does not provide anti-exploit for any apps.

Yes. EMET can by bypassed by certain malware - so can most any security soft.

If you are typical user then you are probably safe... it depends upon many factors - not just your chosen AV\AE.

If you use MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, etc, etc - then it won't hurt to add EMET.

Today, were releasing the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) 5.1 which will continue to improve your security posture by providing increased application compatibility and hardened mitigations. You can download EMET 5.1 from microsoft.com/emet or directly from here. Following is the list of the main changes and improvements:

* Several application compatibility issues with Internet Explorer, Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, and Mozilla Firefox and some of the EMET mitigations have been solved.
* Certain mitigations have been improved and hardened to make them more resilient to attacks and bypasses.
* Added Local Telemetry feature that allows to locally save memory dumps when a mitigation is triggered.

All the changes in this release are listed in Microsoft KB Article 3015976.

If you are using Internet Explorer 11, either on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, and have deployed EMET 5.0, it is particularly important to install EMET 5.1 as compatibility issues were discovered with the November Internet Explorer security update and the EAF+ mitigation. Alternatively, you can temporarily disable EAF+ on EMET 5.0. Details on how to disable the EAF+ mitigation are available in the User Guide. In general we recommend upgrading to the latest version of EMET to benefit from all the enhancements.

A:How about EMET?

EMEt is a tool created by Microsoft that makes exploiting vulnerabilities on your system harder. In Windows 7 and especially Windows 8 such protection (they are called mitigations and have to do with memory allocation) exist on kernel and system level. What East mainly does is to improve such protection and extend it to 3rd party apps that you install on your system.
Even is more useful for applications like Adobe Reader that has many security holes for example.
However certain EMET protections might be incompatible with some apps and cause problems to them.
There is a guide that you can download directly from Microsoft when you download the installation package.

A:EMET

I set mine to paranoid, I have never tested it out. In theory it's supposed to help but I just add it into the many layers of security I use just in case. It doesn't replace any security tools just helps block some 0-day attacks on common vectors like flash, java, or office (or other programs you add into it).

I have it running, but the profile it is running is custom setting profile if i change to maximum and restart for effects to take place, nothing happens as custom profile is still the used profile.
In the running EMET column there are no ticks or anything, so thats telling me no apps are being protected by emet, in the DEP column they all have a green tick.
Am i missing something, i read the tutorial and then try to watch the video, but ...
Im running win 7 64, so could some kind person, tell me what to do or put my mind at rest.

I want to print 'something'
Annoyingly, it will have a LARGE black area - or maybe a large area of something else - another colour

I print: I waste ink, lots of it - bad for the world, costly and expensive wasting that ink, if on an inkjet - also rubs off on you!!

Is there a printing program that examines large areas, if they are of a similar colour, substitutes it for a zigzag pattern of the same colour?

See below for a rough sketch of what I mean:

I did a quick search on google, couldn't find anything - but then again, I wasnt sure 'what' to search for!
