Dell computer will not turn on

Q: Dell computer will not turn on

I am sort of befuddled as to why a friends computer will not turn on. There is a green light on the mobo indicating that there is power to the computer, but no luck starting up. I have replaced the power button switch on the front of the computer, checked all power connections to the power supply and motherboard, made sure the outlet was good, and am at a loss as what to check for. She says that there was not a storm before having this problem, but did tell me her daughter shut down the computer by just pushing the power button. I didn't think it was that much of a deal seeing as how the computer is 3 yrs old, but I could be wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.

A: Dell computer will not turn on

Dell computers have a nasty habit of "locking up" at times. sometimes unplugging the computer and letting it sit for 30 minutes then plugging it back in will solve the problem and sometimes you have to strip the components and add them piece by piece until you get it working again.

the process is to remove ALL components except the processor( including disconnnecting monitor, keyboard, mouse). plug in and power up shut down unplug, add memeory plugin and power up, unplug add hard drive plugin power up, power off, unplug, add video card( if there is one) power up at this point you should be able to tell if it is booting or not. (actually once you start getting beeps during the add component\power up process it should be able to boot once all components are reinstalled.

it is a pain in the rear but it is the process Dell tech support would lead you thru if you called them. ( I had to do it three times. with my 4 year old dell, once it locked up after I switched a optical drive.) oh yeah before i forget each time you shutdown during the adding component process, after you unplug hold in the power button for several seconds to drain any residual power.

My xps 410 Dell computer won't turn on. What happens is I turn it on it says to start normally or startup repairs when I click startup repairs it says it can't fix it. When I start normally gets to the multi-colored flag (windows loading screen) and sits there for about 30 seconds to a minute than it either restarts or goes to a black screen and than it has yellow letters surrounded by a small blue rectangle saying "Out of range" I don't know what to do, but what I do know is that I can boot my computer into safe mode which I'm in right now (safe mode with networking) I've tried looking for solutions but can't find any that work please help and thanks.

Could you pls advise?

I have a Dell Vostro all-in-one PC, with Win Vista home basic installed. For the last 3 years, it has been running normally so far.

Today, just after I removed the external hard drive, suddenly the computer switched off. I tried to turn it on but there is no electricity indication. Nothing happened.

I checked the electricity plug, but it seemed ok as the lamp is on as usual.

Is there a virus that can do this? FYI, I have the Kaspersky internet security installed.

My sincere thanks,

A:Why can't I turn on my Dell computer anymore?

What happens if you reinstall the external HD. Also, please update your UserCP to show Vista as your OS.

Woke up, tried turning on my dell computer. Everything was going alright until the Windows Xp loading screen. it loaded, then the screen just went black. I tried reseting it a few times now it freezes on the opening Dell screen when i turn on the computer. I was unable to get to the log on page which was at first annoying, but now its more annoying that i cannot get into my computer setup or boot options through the opening dell screen. Any suggestions?

Please try this in Safe Mode:

Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer

Open My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
Click Properties, and then click Tools.
Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed
Use one of the following procedures:

? To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
? To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start. (^^tick)

? To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box.

Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:

The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?Click to expand...

Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

Wait until Chkdsk finishes Checking / Repairing any faults
Windows will then either restart your computer or continue loading Normally.

Why did you short the laptop, what were you trying to achieve.

Did you read the thread in here about how to short coz it sounds like you have stuffed the board, this can happen if the short is done incorrectly or held for to long.

last night i was working on my laptop, i realize my battery is low. so, i put it for charging..after a while i realized the battery is 75% charged so I disconnect it. and my laptop switches off.
later the laptop refused to turn i reconnected the charger and the laptop turned on with the light that displays charging status (white light near the  screen-keyboard intersection) starts flickering in a cycle of 5 times...4 times orange and 1 time white...and this cycle continues till i use the laptop.
and this message is displayed when i go to BATTERY HEALTH option "Your battery is temporarily disabled. Please turn off your computer and try again when the unit is back to the operational temperature" my laptop is outta warranty...what should i do ? kindly help

A:Dell XPS 15z : "Your battery is temporarily disabled. Please turn off your computer and try again when the unit is back to the operational temperature"

Welcome to the community.
I am sorry to read that you are having this trouble.  The battery failing is the most likely culprit but you should check to see if there are any problems with either the notebook or Ac adapter before rushing out and replacing the battery.
I would start by checking the bios, start the system tapping F2 to enter the bios, you can also tap F12 and choose bios from the menu.  Once in the bios look for the option for AC adapter warnings, if they are disabled enable them and save changes. If there is a problem with the adapter you should start getting errors about the adapter.
If the Adapter seems alright, disconnect the battery from the system and power down the notebook.  Wait an hour or so and then replace the battery and restart the system and see if you continue to get the message.   If you can run the notebook on battery only allow the battery to fully discharge and then charge it again and see if the problem returns.
I know that this may not be possible short of buying a new battery but if possible try a power adapter and battery and see if the problem continues.  This way you can find out if the problem follows the battery the ac adapter or the notebook.
Please let me know what you find out.

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

A:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I think it might be my power supply because when I first put it together I didn't plug in the smaller power connection to the motherboard and the same thing is happening, black screen. It's like my computer isn't giving my monitor any feed. I will have more info when I get home. I can't get in to bios or safe mode.

Here's the backstory: my brother's computer is a brand new dell inspiron 530 with windows vista, 1GB of memory and an intel video adapter, it also had an lcd monitor. after a night of partying, it ended up on the floor beneath a second-floor balcony (you can guess how it got there ). I know a little more about computers than my brother, and I ended up getting it to work again, all except the monitor. I got it turned on and logged into windows and everything seemed to work fine (i guess computers can be pretty resilient). I updated everything and turned it off.

Today when I turned it on, it showed an orange light rather than green (you know, that standy-by amber light). Nothing showed up on the monitor. The fans were running, and would not stop running, but that was all. I couldn't even get the dvd-drive to open up.

Here's what I know:
- everything worked yesterday
- the ram is fine, it will work in other computers
- the monitor it is currently connected to is fine, it works with other computers
- i think the video card is fine, because i've had video card problems in the past that affect the display but don't cause the computer to not turn on

My guess is that this is likely related to the power supply, but I don't know why it would have worked yesterday and not today... you would think that anything that physically works after being thrown over a balcony wouldn't be brought down by a night of doing nothing.

Any ideas? Things I can t... Read more

How new is it? I ask because Dell is pretty good about swapping bad computers for good computers. I'd check on that before getting too involved. Naturally, you may want to keep the balcony situation out of the conversation.

Before I get into my question I would like to disclaim that I am not at all a computer person, I mean I don't know the names of the different parts. Heck I can't really remember the model of my computer all too well buuut, I went to work today and my computer was off (as stated before it's an all in one Dell Inspiron) and I got home, deciding to play video games however it didn't turn on. The power button light is a white kinda blue colour like usual and it sounds normal but after about 2 seconds it shuts off (It doesn't even get to the screen with the Dell logo on it). I've unplugged my Wacom tablet and all things like that, also note the light on the cord coming from the back of the computer is on just like usual. This computer was bought in December 2015 so it's not old at all and I'm quite worried because it is so new and rather important to me so any advice would be nice, especially if you could break it down into simple terms so someone as dumb as me can understand. Thanks!!!!!

A:All in one Dell Inspiron won't turn on

We need to know the exact model number. If you don't know it but have the Service Tag number (look for a sticker on the PC), go to Support and type that number into the Enter a Service Tag or other product ID box about 1/3 down the page. It should tell you the model number.
You can try this for starters:.

Disconnect the power cord from rear of PC; don't just unplug it from the wall
Now press/hold the power button for ~30 sec
Reconnect the power cord to rear of PC
See if it boots now

Hi,,I have the same problem as the below post which went unanswered --any takers this time for me ,thanks
Somebody has just asked me to look at their computer because it wonít turn on. It is a Dell XPS WHL desktop computer and is about 4 or 5 years old. When you press the power button on the front nothing happens. I have checked the power cable and also tried a spare that I know works and that is not the cause, I have checked that all of the cables in the computer are secure and that there are no burn marks or breaks in cables.

When you first plug a computer in you normally hear the fans spin for a second or some noise but with this one there is nothing the only sound that I could get it to make was by plugging the power cable in to the mains and then connecting it to the computer and it makes the "Pop" sound. Even the fans on the power unit donít make a noise or move. The owner has had this problem once before where it would not turn on and they took it to somebody who plugged it in and there was nothing wrong. I have heard of this before though and it is when the computer needs totally disconnecting for 30 seconds and then everything is fine but now that does not work. No lights on the front of the computer or on the Motherboard light up even for a second, there are no beeps.

Does this sound like a problem with the motherboard or the power supply unit and how would I test each of them? I had a look to see if it is possible to have a look at the pow... Read more

I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 running Vista, and I've had it for about 2 1/2 to 3 years. Today I was online and all of a sudden a blue screen came up and my laptop shut off. I don't know if it was THE blue screen of death because I didn't have a chance to look at it, but it certainly was a blue screen of doom =/

Anyways right after the blue screen came up and my laptop turned off, the caps lock light (the lock icon w/the 'A' on it next to the power button) kept blinking. At the time, my laptop was plugged into the AC adapter charger thing (I don't know about how computers work, i just know how to use the internet!) so its not like the battery was low or anything. I kept pressing and holding down the power button several times with the AC charger thing in the laptop, and without the AC charger thing, and it would not turn on. The only thing that happened was that the caps lock icon would blink blue for about 45 seconds (or 45 times, not sure) and laptop would make the sound it always makes when its about to turn on. Then after the 45 seconds/times, the sound would stop. Nothing ever appeared on the screen.

The laptop was very hot at the time, but I've had this computer for years and its been hotter than it was today and it never did anything like this. Also, for the past 2 weeks or so, i've been getting a popup in the bottom right corner of my screen (where the time is) saying that my battery is reaching the end of its usable life and needs to be replaced. I have had this problem for awhile now. Before I could just mess with it a little bit and it would randomly turn back on. Well, I had to turn it off 2 days ago and move it somewhere else and of course it wouldn't start. I got the usual blinking amber LED. I heard a solution for some people was that a USB port shorted and it stops it from starting up. I happen to have a broken USB port. The problem is yesterday I was unplugging it and taking cords out of the back, I also took out the Mobo battery thing and put it back in, which is what I had done before. After awhile of this, the LED wouldn't even blink Amber anymore, so I can't check to see if the USB is causing the problem. Is it possible that by unplugging and plugging it back in so many times I really messed up the PSU? However, the Mobo light stays a normal steady green whenever I have the PC plugged in, making me think it isn't the PSU.

Sorry for wall of text, any replay would be appreciated, I have read many threads about this problem with many different solutions. It isn't an easy problem to fix.

A:Dell E510 won't turn on

Follow this guide first:

There appear to be a number of people pointing to failure of the front usb/audio control panel and/or power button. Part#'s- front bezel (includes power button)- X8637, control panel - X8682 (you should independantl;y confirm the part numbers).

It appears the control panel could be disconnected for troubleshooting purposes. The power button could also be disconnected - having never done this, someone else will have to advise you on how to start the comp with it disconnected.

edit: the other prevailing suggestion is, with the unit unplugged, to switch the voltage selector fully to 220 then back to 110. Apparently these switches can 'migrate' a bit.

Hello akurnyc,
Try disconnecting the power cable & then holding the power button for about 10 seconds (this forces the capacitors to discharge).  If that doesn't help, try using a different outlet.  If you're using a surge protector, power strip, or battery backup/UPS, then try connecting directly to the wall.

Replaced battery 3 weeks ago but had no problems after wards. I hope this is an easy fix and would appreciate any help. Thanks, oh, when I say no power, I mean monitor will not power up either.

A:Dell desktop won't turn on

The Dell power supply has failed... or hopefully not the motherboard. Try replacing the power supply first though

We purchased a 5150 Notebook for Christmas. It has just decided not to turn on. The light on the electrical cord is on, so I'm sure it's working. When we plug it in to an outlet by itself it blinks green lights but won't do anything else. When its running solo on a battery is in we either get orange lights or nothing. It's had more than enough time to charge the battery, but other than lights... there's nothing. We don't use it for gaming (so I don't think it's overheated) mainly internet and Windows. OUr trouble shooting book just tells us to hold down on the on button for 5-6 sec if you are experiencing trouble turing it on. --- That still didn't work. Any help would be desperatly appreciated.

How do I get the Dell Registration off of my daughter's computer - It drives me and her crazy? I have registered and it still keeps popping up?

A:Turn off Dell Registration

Hi -

I would suggest SysInternals AutoRuns, free from Microsoft TechNet.

Download it and SAVE to Documents. RIGHT-click on autoruns.exe, select "Run as Administrator". Allow it to scan (status - lower-left screen). Click on "Logon" tab, look for Dell Registration - or similar entry. Un-check the box. Doing so will disable it. Should you desire, you can always re-check the box making it active again.

Alright so my brother was playing on xbox live last night and for some reason he found it necessary to prop open my laptop to check his stats for Battlefield Bad Company as he played it. Now my brother is what you would call a hardcore gamer, his session lasted a good 5 or 6 hours.

I awoke this morning to see that he was still up and he tried to lighten the mood be telling my my latitude has an attitude. I may have laughed but i could see by the look on his face something was bad.

So now when i try to turn it on, the power lights and the lock lights go on for about a second then go off again and there are none of the sounds of a computer startup that i recognize. He said it was plugged in and then just suddenly shut off.

He had it sitting on a solid table so i am guessing that it probably overheated and the fan couldn't do it's job.

The model is Dell C510/C610 Latitiude this is my first laptop bought off ebay for 200 and its been running fine for the last month.

Any help you can give in getting my laptop back up and running is greatly appreciated.

Hi all,

I had a look to see if it is possible to have a look at the power unit but it seems to be in its own compartment that I cannot see how you detach it from the tower. I have... Read more

I have a laptop Inspiron N5010 and it won't turn on.
The power button light and the first two front led blinks but makes no sound.
Need help as I have important information on this computer.

A:Dell N5010 won't turn on

Hi lucasnd,
Thanks for posting.
Apologies that your N5010 won't turn on.  Were you unable to contact Tech Support for assistance?
I have a few questions,
does it not turn on at all even plugged in to the wall outlet?
Have you tried a different battery?
Is the power button light blinking in a particular pattern?
If you are unable to get it to come on, you can always remove the hard drive and put it in a hard drive enclosure to get the data from it.

Today it worked this morning. Tonight it won't turn on at all, power light flashes amber, and it makes a little quiet tick sound but nothing else. any suggestions? I did remove power cord and pressed on button ten seconds to get rid of static electricity. but it still won't turn on.

On Christmas night, I did as I usually did - turned off my Dell PC by holding the power button until it all turns black and went to sleep with the charger still plugged in AS USUAL.

Then the morning of December 26, my PC did NOT turn on - and guessing it "broke" with no apparent warning. I took out the charger, waited a couple hours, and plugged my charger back in, hoping there was a power-outage Christmas night. The charger light turned white, indicating charge was being put in, and then it turned off, indicating charge was finished - and my pc still DID NOT turn on!

I also have Mcafee Virus Remover, which automatically scans my pc and destroys viruses each and every day.

What the hell is the problem here!?

In the real world this NEVER happens, it is only a wish. Who taught you to hold the power button to shut down Windows? You could have corrupted the hard drive. Have you ever used a mouse to select the Start button and shutting down the notebook that way? The motherboard could be toast too

My friend gave his laptop to try and fix because I am pretty tech savvy, although had virtually no experience with laptops. His has the problem of not turning on, I couldn't hear the hard drive stating to spin so I took the one out of my laptop and put it in his. Nothing changed but then when I put my hard drive back, my screen wont turn on, just the lights and I cant hear the processor, or harddrive start up. nothing but the little power lights. I really need you help guys, I am selling this laptop to friend of my brother this week

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

A:Dell Latitude won't turn on

Remove the HardDrive again from your laptop (I think we are only talking about your Laptop)
Remove the Power Adaptor and Battery
Hold down the ON button for 30secs (dispersing all internal voltage)
Put the Power Adaptor back in (No HardDrive yet!)
Turn On
Does it now show a display?

If Yes. Turn it off, and put the HardDrive and Battery back in.
If No, Remove the Power Adaptor again
Disperse the internal Voltage again
Remove and reseat the Ram (sometimes blowing out any dust too)
With the Ram back in, Put the Power Adaptor back in
Turn on

Did it work?

Okay so I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. It's pretty old as I got it in 2009, and yes the battery is shot to hell. But it has worked in this condition.

The problem is I can't get the adapter to turn on to get my computer powered on. To my knowledge, there's no shortage or exposed wires on it. I can even post a picture if you would like.

Before people also tell me to get a new laptop, I'm broke. This is my only option for now. And as stated earlier, it has worked in this condition before. The LED on the adapter won't even turn on when I keep trying to plug it into different power sources.

If anyone can help with this it would be very much appreciated. Thank you!!!

I'm trying to help my friend to figure out why her Dell Dimension E510 won't turn on anymore. I plugged in the power cord to a working wall outlet and pressed on the power button and nothing happens, not even the blink orange LED lights as most people have mentioned in the forums. The only light I see is a solid green light on the mobo. I tried to take out the CMOS battery and put it back in and didn't help. I unplugged the power connector from the PSU that goes into the mobo and replugged it back in and I see the computer was getting power for a few seconds (as the front panel power lid up for a few secs) and then it just shuts back down again. I tried this a few times and same results every time. Do you think the problem is in the PSU? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

A:Dell Dimension E510 won't turn on, please help

Starting with the obvious-Is the 4 pin ATX12V1 power plugged in ?
CMOS battery could be dead.
Have you tried clearing CMOS (RTCRST Jumper pins 1 and 2)
PSU could be dead.
I presume that the four diagnostic lights on the rear I/O panel are non-functional ?

So it all started a few weeks ago when I was completely convinced that I was having AC adapter/battery issues. When I went to plug in the charger into the back of my laptop, it would just turn off(or go into standby because the power light would stay green after this happened). The only way I could use my laptop was to have enough battery for what I needed to do, or already have it plugged in to the charger when I went to turn it on.

So this continued for a while..the same problems. Now for some reason when it's plugged in and the computer is moved a little bit, it goes black again. These were the reasons I figure it was my battery connections or the adapter.

CURRENTLY...I cannot turn on my laptop at all. I tried taking out the battery and leaving it out for a long time. I tried turning it on w/o the AC and with it (with battery and without).

AND..When I go to turn it on the power light comes on for about 3 seconds then just turns off again (with no sounds from fan or processor).

I read something about breaking the touchpad sensor but I'm not the type to just unscrew the lid of my laptop ahhh.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have a Dell Ispiron 1100

It won't turn on

I press the power button and if there is no AC power attached
the lights light up while I press the button, but no start up

When the AC power is attached, I don't get any lights at all

It's been happening for a while

I used to flip it over and pull out the battery, then replace it
and try again, after a few times it worked

Then I realised that just by opening the screen and trying it, then closing
the screen, then opennng and trying again... after a few times it would start

(are there any wires that would be affected by that??)

Once it started, so long as I left it plugged in, and the screen open it would always restart first go

I also think, that when it was unplugged, closed, etc so long as I started it agin fairly soon, it worked

I've just been overseas for a week in a colder climate and now I can't seem to get it started at all

I've tried with battery in, with battery out, AC in AC out

Any help would be much appreciated

Dell Inspiron won't turn on

We have a professor at our university that turned in a Dell laptop with exactly the same symptoms!

Really, with the battery alone installed, the lights flash momentarily when the power button is pressed. If the charger is connected (or the charger alone): no lights
(Just like Christoff)

The machine won't start up and there was some story about how it died last time the lid was closed. We are suspicious of a faulty lid interlock that is keeping the laptop in hibernate (or some deep, permanent sleep).

Another theory - Does anyone know if these have an internal power fuse, such that the external power brick isn't actually getting DC into the main board or charging the installed battery? We can't find any info about the power distribution or a schematic.

Two beeps mean no memory is recognized.  If you hear this with or without the memory installed and have more than one memory module, the mainboard is bad.

I have a Dell Inspiron 600. About a week ago, I started to have this problem where I would try to turn the machine on but it just wouldn't work. I pressed the power button, the small LEDs next to the power button flicked on for a few seconds, it made a small "putt" sound, and then nothing happened. Being stubborn, I kept trying and eventually the machine turned on. After having run into this a couple times in the last week (basically hoping the problem would go away), now the machine just will not turn on.

Any advice anyone could offer would be much appreciated.

A:Dell laptop suddenly won't turn on

Certainly sounds like a hardware problem, most likely a power supply unit failure.

Unless you are reasonably skilled in this area, you might need to take it to a shop?
Being a Dell, it may be "proprietary" in that a standard PSU may not be suited?

My system was dead and I thought it was the power supply. Staples put a new one in and it has been working fine since then. Now yesterday, it just shut down. I turned it on again and it clicked off. All the lights on the back of the dell were green and no beeps or anything like that. Now when I turn it on I see the green light on the MB but it seems dead.

No lights ABCD... lighting up on the back of the PC anymore. I researched this a little and read of many 4400 problems like this but no one had a solution. Some are saying the power options are putting the system to sleep, and that's why the monitor is staying amber and not going on. I am going to try a new 3v battery with my fingers crossed but something is telling me there is more going on here.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

My Latitude D531 is powered using the wall adapter without the battery. It worked well until recently. Now when I connect the adapter the power light on the laptop is a constant green. However, when I press the power button nothing happens. The laptop does not turn on, the fans do not turn on and there is no hard drive activity. I already ruled out a defective adapter. I also used compressed air to blow out the dust out of the laptop (there was abundant dust). It is now dust free yet I still have the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

A:Dell Latitude D531 won't turn on

"there was abundant dust"...

The laptops motherboard could have overheated for the last time and now has failed. They run hot without the abundant dust. You could try pulling out the AC adapter and hold the power button down for a minute. Reattach the AC adapter, and try booting. If it still doesn't start, reseat the hard drive and memory. Still no start, it is time for a repair shop or a new laptop. Good luck

Unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.   Return the system to the original memory configuration.  If it'll power up, you're set.
If not, did you remove the memory with the system plugged in and/or with the battery connected?  If you did, you may well have fried the mainboard.

Okay, one of my laptops which is a Dell Latitude D610 suddenly just turned off. The charger was connected when that happened. I tried the power button but no lights turned on. I already tried taking out the battery and turning it on with charger/and without, but still nothing works. Is the battery completely dead, and need to be replaced? How can I fix this? thank you in advanced !

A:\Dell Latitude D610 won't turn on/

Possible reasons for this:

1.) Your battery is dead and can no longer be charged, AND your power supply unit is dead also

2.) Your battery is fine and your power supply is fine, but the DC jack for your laptop needs repair/replacement. It could be currently preventing power from getting to your computer, thus not charging your battery or powering the computer.

3.) Your power supply unit is dead and needs replacing.

4.) Your motherboard is dead.

It may help to take your computer to a shop and plug in a working adapter that fits your computer; that will help diagnose your issue...along with the info provided.

Hope that helps.

I was wondering if you guys have any insight as to what's the problem here. I left my computer on (as I always do) and went to work. When I came back home, I found my computer off. I thought to myself, "hmm..that's weird, I know nobody comes into my room or they BETTER NOT...stupid bratty little sister..." Then as I tried to turn it on, it won't turn on. Nothing. Not even a small sign of life.

I took the casing shell off, and tested the power supply. The power supply was okay. I was disappointed when I found out the power supply was okay because that being the one obvious flaw, I don't know what's wrong with my computer anymore. Do any of you guys have any ideas as to what's going on? I will tell you that I leave my computer on for long periods of time which is probably something I shouldn't be doing from now on. Any help is appreciated.

A:My Dell Dimension 2400 PC Won't Turn On

How did you test the power supply???

Not sure of your level of expertise but no disrespect meant, you can only really test an atx power supply by connecting it to another Computer or MB setup on a workbench because the MB controlls the switching on of the power supply.

If you tried a new power supply on your system and you get nothing at all then you have a dead MB.

Its ok to leave your computer on for long periods so long as you' got good ventilation and good cooling fans does not run Hot all the time your pc can be ok.

Well first off I upgraded the RAM on this machine. I have upgraded the RAM on other machines lots of times. I grounded myself before I did any work on this computer. I took out the old RAM and put in two sticks of 2 gigs of RAM.

After I hooked it up again I got the "jet engine" noise. I saw the amber light on the power button and then it got LOUD real fast. I waited to see if it will go away but it didn't. I had to pull the power plug to turn it off.

I then opened it up again and made sure their wasn't any loose connections. There was not. I hooked it up again and hoping it will give me something beeps or anything but nothing. No power, no fan noise, no hard drive noise and no beeps. I checked all the cables outside and made sure nothing was loose but everything is okay. Not sure what to do now.

I hope the mobo is not fried. Would it be the power supply? The only other thing I can think of is maybe I need to put in a new cpu, a new heatsink and of course thermal paste. By the way this was a hand me down computer from my mother-in-law company. So I would say it is about 4 years old.

I was reading about the Dell Optiplex GX280 and learned that they have bad quality capacitors on the motherboard. Maybe it has blown capacitors on the motherboard.

Has anyone run into this same situation and how did you solve it? Probably spend the money on a hand built computer. I think.

I hope you guys can help me out here.

All, I have a Dell dimension 5000 (tower system) and turned it of last night in the usual manner. This morning, the amber turn on switch light is going on & off and the PC will not power up.
Have turned it off at the mains but as soon as it's turned back on, the light continues to flash. The screen also will not turn on.
Any ideas? By the way, my netbook works perfectly via my WIFI connection so it looks like a hardware issue (I think)
The Dell is about 5 yrs old and (was) in perfect working order. Windows XP.
Any (not too technical) help much appreciated.

I ordered a Dell Precision M3800 and as soon as I got it out of the box, it'd immediately had problems turning on. The button would light up, the keyboard lights would turn on for a few seconds, then everything would shut down. It worked every once in a while if I removed the power cable or if I tried different combinations of removing/inserting power cable and pressing the button. I took it into the shop and they replaced the motherboard and now it will not turn on at all. The service desk said it turned on for them, but it turned on once for me after pressing the button 20+ times, but never turned back on after that.I have requested a replacement computer, but in the mean time, does anyone have any idea what the problem might be or how I can turn it on to retrieve my files.

A:Dell Precision M3800 Won't Turn On

I've had my M380 for about 8 months and just this week started having same problem. I have found that removing my Logitech usb wireless mouse/keyboard dongle has allowed it to startup. Its happened the last 2 days and both times I couldn't do anything to get it started. Both times I removed the USB dongle it started on the next try. This is frustrating.

My dell dimension 3000 won't turn on, when i try to, it doesn't make any sounds and just blinks a yellow light where the green light should be.

I put it into storage for a while, and when i went to use it a couple months ago, it showed a screen that said i needed to call a number, but it turned off too quickly. I put it back into storage after trying everything i could think of and just used other computers. Now i don't even get that screen anymore, just the flashing light. What can i do?

A:Dell Dimension 3000 won't turn on

Take the machine into a local repair facility and have them test the power supply unless you have a power supply tester.

Also, have them "jump" a known good power supply to the motherboard to verify the board is good. Both tests should take less than 30 minutes and the cost should be minimal.

So I have had this problem several times with the same laptop. I will go to sleep and when I wake up the laptop won't turn on. I do the RAM reset thing, remove the memory cards, but nothing. I'll just leave it plugged in and usually after a couple of days the laptop will suddenly turn on. Well, it happened again yesterday. I woke up and the laptop once again will not turn on. Can't contact dell support because they are absoultely no help. Thanks for any assistance you can give me.

A:dell laptop wont turn on

Check for a tiny little switch below the screen lid. It's possible that it got stuck down. Also, check the bios battery. A dead or low bios/cmos battery voltage will cause all kinds of craziness. Remove power plug, remove laptop battery, press hold power switch. Plug in power only no battery see if it boots. It could be a worn out or broken power port on the laptop.

We have a Dell M3800 (tag no <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>) that will not power on. It is out of warranty.
 A few things I have noticed are;
1)      The LED  on the power plug is on, but the charge LEDs do not show as charging
2)      If I disconnect the battery and then plug it back in, the charge LEDs will then show, but it will still not power on.
3)      There is no sign of life from the power switch, not even a flash.

Any ideas if I can get this repaired?

A:Dell M3800 won't turn on (out of warranty)

Will the system power up on AC only?  If not, the odds are overwhelming the mainboard needs to be replaced.

Hi all, I have a big problem which I would like some help on.

About 30 minutes ago, I was playing Call of Duty 4 on my Dell Latitude E6510, then there came a small beep, the screen flickered blue/green/white (hard to explain, kind of like when you get a bad signal on your TV). Then the screen froze, the laptop was still running.

I held the power button, turning the laptop off, then when I tried to turn it on again, there was no response from the laptop.

When I press the On button, it lights up blue for 5 seconds, then goes away again. When I try to charge it with the adapter, the charging light comes on for 3 seconds, then goes away again. Nothing has worked. I've also tried to run the laptop without the battery, just on mains, and there was still the same happening.
If you need extra info, please ask .

Thanks a lot.

A:Dell Latitude E6510 won't turn on.

I actually just had the exact same thing happen to mine as well. Your description matches mine identically. When I push the power button I can see some of the smaller lights *start* to light up but then quickly go dark again, so only the power button stays on (for about 5 seconds then turns off). During this time the computer makes no sound so it's like the computer isn't even starting to turn on.

Strangely enough this is a company laptop for my job and a coworker of mine just had the same issue with his. I almost wonder if there is a defect and we all had ours from that batch. That doesn't necessarily explain why they are all going bad around the same time though... I mean I've been using mine for almost 4 months now and my coworker has been using his for about 2-3 months.

Even the scrambled signal you described is something I experienced. I wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary when it happened, just typing in bed with it on my lap. Power cord wasn't plugged in either. Any help would be appreciated!

I have experienced this too. When i brought my PC to the nearest service centre they told me that motherboard burned out. It can be due to heat, bad air ventilation or bad power supply.

I have a Vostro 3550 (Win 7 Professional 64 bit) that I purchased in 2011. It has been a very reliable laptop until a few days ago. Now the laptop does not turn and it does not show any power on the indicator light on the front. The power adapter shows that it has power. Just in case there was something wrong with the battery that was preventing the laptop from starting, I removed the battery and re-attached the power cord. Still no power and the laptop didn't start. I reinstalled the battery and tried to restart it. No luck again. I tried to power it up with 3 other power adapters I have (2 OEM & 1 aftermarket) and still no luck getting it to start/boot. So I am pretty sure my adapters are okay and feel it must be something with the laptop itself. Dell said that I could send it to them to diagnose but they would charge me $200 for the diagnosis.
Even though it had been a very good machine, I am not sure that I want to spend a lot of money on it because it is so old. Does anyone have any easy suggestions of things I can try to see if I can get it to start and boot? I would appreciate any and all suggestions so that I don't have to go out and buy a new machine with Windows 10.

A:Dell Vostro 3550 Will Not Turn On

Sounds like a motherboard failure and you're wise not to spend anything on it especially a $200 fee just to look at it. Don't hesitate to buy a new laptop with windows 10. It is a big improvement over Windows 8. Win 10 can even use windows 7 backups.

I recently bought a used dell c640. It worked fine but there was no charger with it so of course it sat dead for days. Until I bought a brand new adapter/charger. I've had it plugged in for about an hour. The battery light is on but sometime it will go off. If I push the battery in a lil it turns back on. I tried turning power on without battery installed and the on light and little lights by the power button come on for a few seconds then go off. Any idea what's wrong? I don't think it's the cord like I said new and the lights wouldn't come on until I plugged it in. Please HELP!

A:Dell latitude c640 won't turn on

This has worked for me. Remove the battery and power cord then hold down the power button for about 20 secs. Replace the battery, plug in the power brick and see if the laptop will boot up.

I was wondering if anyone knew what was going on with this. I hit the power button and it starts to light up like its going to turn on but then it doesn't. I am wondering if anyone knew what was wrong with it. I am debating on taking it to get looked at to see if its even worth fixing. I think it has something to do with the motherboard. Not really sure though. Any suggestions?

I'm sure you all have had this question asked dozens of times, so please excuse me. I bought a Dell Studio 1537 a little over a year ago. It has worked great up until two day ago. After getting home from work two nights ago, my computer would not turn on. Noo lights flashed, no startup noises, nothing. After monkeying around with the battery and the power adapter I finally got it going like an hour later. Once I turned it on the battery had nearly full life, that wasn't my problem. Same thing then happened last night. This time no amount of messing with the battery helped and I ended up removing and replacing my memory card. After which it booted right up. Tonight, once again nothing happened and this time neither of the previous procedures worked. So this time I ended up pulling the hard drive and plugging it back in and the laptop booted right up. Any clue what the problem might be? Once I get the stupid thing running I have no problems. However, it's not starting up when I get home at night. Thanks!

Hi, I have a 2002 Dell Dimension 4400 which won't start at all - not a light, not a sound, nothing. I've tried another power cord & tried another outlet, to no avail. It's been acting up in the last few days - it would turn back on after I tried to set it to standby, so I would have to turn it off completely. I am not very computer literate, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

A:Dell Dimension 4400 won't turn on at all

Dude... yer git'n a dell... that doesn't work!! (lol.. just kidding, i couldn't resist )

but seriously, it sounds like your power supply died (not uncommon in Dell machines). I know that older Dell machines (not sure if 2002 falls into this category or not) used proprietary components (non-industry standard), which forces you to buy replacements and upgrades from Dell. For Dell power supples, they used the same connector as a standard ATX power supply, so people thought that when it died, they could simply buy an ATX PSU to replace it with... they would install it, plug it in, and pfff... (anybody order a fried motherboard?)

I am a bit of a tech head, and urged my wife to wait until the "good" touch screen haswell laptops came out.  I even wrote some glowing reviews of Dell's inspiron 15 7537 after I received it ([])

Unfortunately, just a few weeks out of warranty, the trusty laptop has stopped powering up.
The symptoms: laptop will not power up.  Things I have tried:

Making sure the power cable was plugged in (LED is on the power ring on the plug itself)
Making sure the PC recognizes the power cable and the power adapter isn't loose (power ring brightens when plugged in)
Trying different outlets, including several direct to wall outlets
Removing battery and trying to power up with just power cable
Removing battery and AC adapter, holding power for 3+ minutes to "clear static charge" as recommended by some self-help websites
Doing above and then plugging power cable in
One ram chip at a time
No ram

Unfortunately nothing works.  Fans don't turn on, lights don't turn on, display doesn't turn on, no noises or beeps.  Other than the power ring on the plug getting brighter when I plug it in, there is no indication that the device is receiving any power.
I'm pretty bummed and hope there is a solution and/or that Dell can help make things right.  The build quality of the device is so high and my wife has been very satisfied and I hope that she can get more than a year of... Read more

I have had the same problem.  This computer has been horrible for this.  I have replaced the motherboard and sent it out to depot for repair.  It still does this.  I have to remove the back cover and pull the battery then put the battery back in and then it will work for a while then I will have to do it again.  I have been very disappointed with this laptop.  We use Dells at work and I have never had this problem until this computer.  I have been disappointed in Dell helping me with the issue.  They tell me that nothing is wrong with the computer but It has been a pain with this issue.

One of my 2 Dell E510 desktops won't turn on. It was working 100% fine, no prior symptoms. I have Windows XP, sp3.

I pushed the "on/off" button. Nothing happened. I held the button - the amber light blinked repeatedly.

I swapped power supplies with my identical E510. The one I took out worked fine in the other machine, and the one I put in did not work. So it's not the power supply.

I replaced the CMOS battery. No help.

Now, the symptoms changed slightly. The amber light blinks ALL the time when the machine is plugged in, and I see (and hear) the power supply fan making a very slight attempt to turn. It doesn't. The on/off button does nothing. The only way to stop the blinking amber light and fan attempt is to unplug the machine.

I checked the obvious connections.

All computer parts are original.

I see nothing obviously fried on the motherboard.

My wife is yelling at me.

Any suggestions?

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 desktop PC that's 7.5 years old. It was working fine until today, when it wouldn't turn on at all. I kept pressing the power button and nothing happened at all - the computer just wouldn't turn on.

I tried a different power cord and that didn't work. I opened up the computer and I could see an orange light on the motherboard was lit, and a green light on the back of the power supply was lit too, so the computer is getting power.

I took off the front of the case and tried pressing on the power switch directly, and that didn't work. I tried pressing on where the power switch wire connects to the motherboard to make sure it was connected and that didn't help.

Any idea on what's wrong?

A:Dell Inspiron 530 desktop PC won't turn on at all

Most likely a failed pw supply however it can also be a failed pw switch/wiring or a failed mb. To test the pw supply, swap in a known good unit. Note known good does not mean new; it means a unit from a test system or a working system that you know works. A new pw supply can be DOA just like any other part and that will really mess up your troubleshooting.

To test the switch/wiring, pull the pw switch leads from the mb. Jump across the mb pins with a small screwdriver or other metal object. If the board starts, you know either the switch or wiring has failed.

I got an Optiplex 3020 a week ago and yesterday when i was using it, It just turned off and didn't turn on again.
I tried all of the solutions i found on the internet but still no luck.
Please help!

A:Dell Optiplex 3020 won't turn on

Remove the battery.
When you need to reset the bios make sure that power loss recovery is on and Auto turn on is on.
For some reason there is a bug in the bios that when its shut down and the options are OFF it never comes on again.

I accidentally ripped off a piece of material that connects a wire thing from my laptop's on button to another connector, now my computer does not turn on at all. The thing that connects to the unbotton on my laptop could have been easily clipped back in to ths connector, but my problem is that the connector itself accidentally came off. Not sure what it's called but it's about the size of the nail on your pinky, and if you lift it up, you can easily attach the wire thing to it.

Here's a picture of the what the problem looks like.
From this picture, you can see that the wide wire thing connects to a small piece on the computer. The other end of that wire should connect to a similar piece found on the power button (this is the piece that came off).
The piece that came off was connected on the green item with two screws.
My laptop is pretty much broken, the hinges are dislocated and there's a disc problem along with other issues. I just wanted to turn it on somehow, so I could erase all the data in it before selling it for parts. If anyone knows a way to repair it or turn my laptop on some other way, please let me know. Thank you.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1764

A:Any other way to turn on my Dell Inspiron 1764?

Hi glamx,

By the looks of the picture, you would not be able to power on the compuer till the time this button is fixed. Further, as you are just looking to wipe off the data before you sell off the parts, you can actually take the hard drive out of the computer and use an external casing to wipe it clean by connecting it to another computer.

That would atleast solve the purpose of cleaning your computer.

Computer won't turn on. When I hit power button, it quickly blinks amber and makes a split second sound like something is turning inside, then nothing. If I hold the power button down, it will blink amber about every second and make the quick sound, but nothing turns on. Green light on back, below power cord, solid green. Everything is unplugged from the machine. Recently, from time to time, computer has been making constant noise, like fan running loud our perhaps hard drive??

after serching all night to find out why his computer is in limbo, i leave my brother's house without finding needed help. his computer won't turn off...the fan, a couple little lights until he unplugs it from the wall. first, the computer did a restart all by itself, he said, then it would not turn on, except the fan and little lights inside that won't turn off. he took out the hard drive and it functions in his other computer...he puts the hard drive back into the new computer and it will not turn on or completely turn off that fan. he tried the "hold the on/off button for at least five seconds" step and nothing changes. he has had the computer for a year and a half, so he really wants to figure this out. how can he even get it to turn on so he could do a safe start up? so far we cannot find a way to troubleshoot. he have checked the cords, perhaps there was a freeze up that began this loop and that's why the fan stays on? please say this is something you have heard of and there may be a solution. the advice we have found usually goes back to buying a new computer. thanks in advance, tea

Hey guys/gals. Thanks for looking and any help would be great. Here's what's going on. I was playing an online MMORPG the other game and I hit Alt+Tab to switch to my Windows screen and when I did the monitor went black. At first I thought it was some kind of windows glitch so I manually forced the power down via hold the power button. I tried to turn the computer back on and it showed the first main loading screen, not the WIndows screen just the computer loading screen. But when it went past that, nothing. The screen was just black. So I forced the power down again. When I turned it back on, nothing loads. I get the blue light on the side that shows the power is on and the blue light showing the bluetooth adapter card is on. The light that comes on when it's reading from the hard drive comes on for a couple of seconds then goes off like it normally did until after the loading screen. The fan comes on and runs but the loading screen doesnt come up, the hard drives are being read. And as far as I can tell, then monitor isn't just black, it's not even coming on. I've taken it apart and cleaned it as best as I could and still nothing. I removed both hard drives, nothing. I removed the RAM chip, nothing. Any ideas?

A:Dell Inspiron 1721 went black, won't turn on

Disconnecting any externals (including network)
Removing the laptop main large battery
Removing the power adapter cord
Re-seating the Ram (or even just leaving 1 Ram card in only, for the moment)
Re-seating the Hard Drive
Then with all power out still. Hold down the ON button for 20secs
Plug the powered, power cord back in
Turn On
Did it work? If so, then turn back off (or shutdown if Windows loaded)
And refit the extra Ram card (if removed) and refit the main battery
Turn back on again, and you're good to go.
