No External Monitor on HP 2000 2b89wm laptop

Q: No External Monitor on HP 2000 2b89wm laptop

Ok so I recently updated to Windows 10 but now when I connect my laptop to my external monitor the laptop screen doesn't show up on the external monitor.

My laptop's screen is broken so I can't see anything. The laptop is still on the screen immediately after updating so I could blindly work my way through the update screens, but someone would have to upload pictures of the screens immediately after updating to Windows 10.

Thank you for whoever helps!!!!

Alrighty! Here goes!

I've been searching online for five hours looking for fixes for this. I recently replaced the Windows 8 on this Notebook with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit Edition because, simply put, I bloody hate Windows 8.

This has become problematic for me because it appears that there are no compatible drivers that pair Windows 7 and this device's hardware.

I posted in Yahoo Answers about an hour and ten minutes ago and I'm incredibly frustrated with the results (go figure). A link to that question, in case I forget any information I mentioned there: Downgrading to Windows 7 with HP 2000-2b89WM Notebook? - Yahoo! Answers

The product information page for the HP 2000-2b89WM Notebook is located here: HP 2000-2b89WM Notebook PC Product Specifications HP 2000-2b89WM Notebook PC | HP? Support

I have several drivers that are "Out of date." The main one that I'm worried about is the Graphics/Display driver. On the HP website, the device is listed as: Intel HD graphics 3000 with up to 1696MB total graphics memory.

I've tried installing the Windows 8 drivers (which do nothing) and I have also tried updating my drivers through Windows Update. I've also visited HP's driver site, Intel's, and even NVidia, I believe, all to no avail.

I'm hoping that an informed someone can tell me whether or not there are drivers for my graphics chip, and if there are, where I can find them and how I can install them in working order.

Thank you so much for any help! ... Read more

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

A:Monitor Issues - Laptop Reading Built In Monitor as if it were my external monitor.

Only thing I can think of is to disconnnect the external monitor, uninstall any monitors listed and then reboot and hope the computer installs the correct drivers for the laptop monitor.

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

I have a dell laptop that has 1920x1080 resolution. However, i connect it to an external monitor that has 1920x1200 resolution. Basically almost everything i do is on my external monitor which acts as my main primary screen. Thus i do sometimes open some windows or drag a window or so to the other screen like youtube etc to the laptop screen which is the secondary monitor.

My issue at the moment is everything is way too big on the laptop screen. I want to have 1920x1080 resolution but its way too big. I googled what is my resolution on it and it shows 1536 x 864. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080? I googled what is my resolution on the external monitor and it does show 1920x1200 which is correct.

My external monitor which is my main monitor is fine at the moment with the 1920x1200. Its windows 10 but im assuming this should be very similar to windows 7 to fix this issue?

Windows 10 laptop. I connect it to an external monitor and use hdmi cable. My external monitor is my main monitor. I use the laptop monitor as the secondary monitor. I extend the display.

My desktop icons are always on my external monitor desktop. I had moved the hdmi cable connected to my laptop i believe which caused all my icons from my external monitor to go on the laptop monitor. Also there is even spacing on all of the icons. Has anyone had this happened? I then clicked sort and then it rearranged so there is no spacing etc. However, i then noticed hey why are my icons on my laptop monitor and not my external monitor.

Does anyone know why this happened? When i open chrome and other programs, it does open up on my external monitor though which is my primary monitor. I believe i can just drag each of the icons on my desktop on my laptop screen to my external monitor. So just do this and that fixes the issue right? Or is there a way to have all the icons just move to the external monitor. The reason i ask this is in case the icons just suddenly move to the laptop screen again.

My old dell laptop L502x is a bit quirky and caused me to buy a desktop, however, i think it is still saveable. when i have it display to an external monitor via hdmi, it works 100% with no problems. however, when i use the monitor that is physically attached to the laptop, i will get a " A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor" BSOD. from what i've gathered over numerous crashes, i believe its a problem with the integrated graphics in the processor, since they are not used when outputting via hdmi. i could be wrong tho, any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, As you are confirming that issue is intermittent, and now its working fine, it means that issue would be of display cable. The display cable would be loose. Issue can be fixed by refixing the display cable, if the issue persists then the display cable needs to be replaced. This is the only reason, I asked you in the previous post whether issue was intermittent or display view changed while moving the display lid. This particualr issue has nothing to do with the temperature. Regards,Sumit I am an HP Employee

Hi All,
I have an external Envision flatscreen monitor that I have been using attached to my laptop for around a year. I have the monitor displaying on both laptop and the external Monitor. Just recently I had a pc issue which I have rectified and my external monitor since rectifying that issue now displays fuzzy. What can I troubleshoot to find out my issue. I've reviewed the Graphics and Display Properties. It is currently sitting at 1024 by 768, Color: True Color and Refresh 60HZ. The odd thing is that when I am in Display Properties, Settings tab, the left monitor in top is black (this should be my laptop) and the right monitor in the pic, which should be my external monitor is gr3y. When I have pressed on the black monitor, and press Identify it indicates 1. When I press on the grey monitor and press identify, it says it is not active, although I do have an image on my external monitor (fuzzy image). When I click the arrow on 'Extend my Windows Desktop this monitor' the right monitor then is black and when I press on it and press 'Identify' it says it is 1 as well. Is this correct. I know this has nothing to do with the fuzziness but still thought I might see if this is an issue or not.
When I right click on my desktop and go into Graphics Properties - I just get confused as to what this is all about. When I go into Display Tab the Monitor is checked, I can check on any of the others i.e. Notebook, Intel Dual display clone or Extended Desktop. Re... Read more

Trying to use my laptop with an external HP monitor; I have them connected; using FN & F4 keys I can toggle between displays (monitors) or both.  However, when only external monitor is on (which I want), & I close the laptop lid (as the HP monitor is designed to slide the laptop under it), the laptop shuts off & the external monitor goes dark. How do I keep the laptop on when the lid/screen is closed?  (HP Tech Support wants $49 to tell me.) Thanks.

Hi, Right click the Battery icon in the Taskbar and select Power Options. In the following window, select 'Choose what closing the lid does' in the left hand pane. In the subsequent window, next to the heading 'When I close the lid' set this to 'Do nothing' in the dropdown menu for both 'On battery' and 'Plugged in'. Click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the window to apply this change. Regards, DP-K

Hello,

A recent tragedy has left the display on my laptop inop. only approximately 1/10th of the display in the top left corner remains. I have an old Dell flat panel monitor that I wanted to hook up to have at least some functionality while I pursued a new computer or a replacement monitor. (feel free to comment on this as well).

When I hooked up the monitor, it worked as I had hoped. I saw my entire desktop on the external monitor. The only issue was the resolution was different making everything appear too large for the screen. I adjusted the resolution, and next thing I know, the only option is to "stretch monitor across both screens". This leaves the toolbar and all icons on the screen that does not work. All I have been able to do is to drag the toolbar to the external monitor and just restore/move any windows that open to that monitor. This is very cumbersome and too much for my wife to deal with.

I have a feeling that adjusting the resolution is what started my trouble. Please remember when giving advice that my primary monitor has only about 10% usable space, this makes accessing many tools difficult.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions,

Scott

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 1505 running xp media center. The video card is a radeon 256 and I think it is integrated, but I don't know the complete specs. Can get them from Dell if needed.

If you use the ATI Catalyst Control you should be able to close the display to the external monitor.

Or Press FN and one of the F# keys on the keyboard and it should also enable the secondary monitor as an identical clone to the LCD panel.

Kbronski, Sorry to tell you this but the screen on a laptop is not the same as a external monitor.. It requires the electronics from the laptop to drive it. So the answer is no.

Is it possible to use an external monitor as the only monitor via laptop besides setting the external monitor to the secondary monitor and closing the lid of the laptop making it as if the external monitor was the only monitor? I ask this extremely lengthy question because I am trying to run my display at 1360x768 but my laptop monitor is only 1280x768 crippling the display of the external monitor. (edit: this theory is incorrect. I can only blame the laptop driver's inability to display the higher resolution. For some reason it can display 1360x768, but only when panning in 1280x768)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I just bought a laptop with a shattered screen. It's an HP Pavilion dv2315nr. Nothing custom or altered. It works fine, but with the screen broken, and me unable to afford a replacement yet, it's basically just a desktop for now.

My problem is that I've been trying to use it with an LCD monitor. I hook it up, but the picture doesn't automatically transfer to the LCD like older laptops did. HP designed it so that you have to press the FN+F4 keys to switch to an external dispay. No matter how many times I try, it won't switch to the LCD. I've tried it at various points during the startup, and varied the ways I press the key combo. It did switch a couple times the first day I had it, but Windows Vista has a password on it so I couldn't go farther. When I restarted to try and do a system restore, it switched back to the laptop's display.

I need this thing to immediately switch to the LCD when it turns on so I can do a system restore and use it until I get a replacement screen. To do a system restore, I have to press F11 immediately while starting up. I've done that, waited a few minutes, and tried to switch to the LCD. It won't do it. And I can't think of anything else to try.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You do not mention the operating system. Are you wanting to use both monitors at once ore are you experiencing trouble with the built in monitor? When you plug in the external monitor is it detected? Does it show up in Device Manager under monitors? If you are running XP. Go to Control Panel > Display > do not recall the exact path from this point. But under one of the tabs will be a black window. In the window should be two monitors. There will be options to set the primary and secondary monitors as well as an option to "Extend Desktop into this monitor" or similarly worded. Is it checked?

Hi

In general I use my laptop in one place, so I use external keyboard and monitor. Most of my stuff I do only on external monitor, but when i work (code and stuff) I like using both monitors (external as main + laptop monitor as secondary).

The problem is with switching between views. All I do is open laptop if I wanna use both monitors and close it if I don't need external. I have two problems:
1. After doing this operation (either open or close) windows will freeze for like almost 2 seconds before "adding" extra monitor - which is really annoying

2. I use my external monitor as default ALWAYS. But during this 'switching time' all applications which are set up to 'full screen' are changed to be 'still fullscreen' but smaller, like maybe 1-2 pixels smaller, and this is really annoying. To make it 'real fullscreen' again i have to switch it to smaller window - and maximalize again.
I hope You understand what I'm saying.
---
I really have problem with fixing at least second problem. I would be happy with the way it was in windows XP - so "laptop-monitor" is always reachable for applications - even when it's not active.

I have windows 7 x64
Nvidia optimus with Nvidia gt540m and intel card graphic

setting default GPU to Nvidia or intel doesn't affect the problem

A:Laptop + external monitor

You probably have different resolutions between the two monitors, so a maximized window on one, won't be the same size on the other. You may not have this issue if the screens are set at the same resolution. I recall having consistent results back when I had a laptop + external monitor which both had the same (1440x900) native resolution.

I recently got a 24" 1920 x 1080 external LCD monitor for my laptop. It's awesome. I've been using laptops only for many years and now I'm very sorry I waited so long before getting one. But, on to my issue:

I want to only use the external monitor and keep the laptop screen turned off. The problem is that when I resume from sleep sometimes, but not always, the laptop display comes back on showing only the desktop wallpaper. So I then have to hit the windows key plus "p" (for projector) and select projector to get the laptop display turned off again.

I know how to select the external monitor in W7. Basically, one goes to screen resolution from the desktop right click context menu and make the proper selection under multiple monitors (see screenshot below).

But windows 7 seems to forget this setting sometimes and it's a mild annoyance to have to check the laptop monitor and if it's on, hit the windows key plus "p" each time (or almost each time).

So I'm wondering if there's some way to force windows 7 to remember to use only the external monitor and keep the laptop monitor off until I tell it otherwise? I suppose this issue is likely due to some bug in one of my drivers but I am using all the latest drivers.

A:Issue w. laptop & external monitor

Why not just keep the laptop lid closed? The external monitor will display, and your laptop display will be turned off. OR, are you using the keyboard and touch pad on the laptop? If that's the case, do yourself a favor and get a full size keyboard and mouse, and plug it into the laptop, push the laptop off to the side, and keep the lid closed. Alternately, you could invest in a docking station so you don't have to plug everything in each time. That's what I do at work.

It says in the specs it can do up to 2048x1536. I have an external Sony LCD monitor (Sony SDM P234, 23''). Yes it's quite a monitor and laptop too

Installed Sony drivers, latest Nvidia GO drivers from Toshiba web site. The best I can do is set the external monitor to 1600 x 1200 (with black bars on each sides). Called Toshiba once, the guy didn't had any clues for me

I tried what they said in the Toshiba support web site, no luck yet...

I have a Toshiba Tecra S3 laptop, running Windows XP Pro Sp2. When I plug in an external monitor, the laptop automatically starts up with the external monitor as the primary display and I can then go into settings and extend the display to the laptop screen. All fine so far. However, what I want to do is to play video on the external monitor and have other applications such as web browser on the laptop screen. However, no matter what I try, I cannot get this to work.

I can play the video on the laptop screen and other programs can be viewed on the external monitor, but I don't want that. The reason for the external screen is so that I can view video at better quality than the laptop screen will give me.

If I move the video window to the external monitor it goes there OK, but the video continues to play in full screen mode on the laptop screen as well. If I try to move other application windows to the laptop screen, the full screen video stays on top and the other windows cannot be accessed. There are no video controls accessible from the laptop screen, only from the video software on the external screen.

Can anyone tell me what I have to do to have the video only play on the external monitor, and have the laptop screen available for other things? The video software I have been using is VLC and Windows Media Player.

At first when I connected the VGA lead, I got a message "Multiscreen application error monitor not found". Then a 'check signal cable' floating box appeared on the Samsung screen.

Now when I try to plug the VGA lead into my laptop, my laptop screen goes black.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

When we connect an older ADI 19" monitor to a Vista laptop, it shows no images even though the monitor power light is green, indicating a video signal.

I played with all the display settings (refresh rate, resolution), the function-F5 key to select the display, etc., did not help.

When I connect a different monitor to the laptop it runs instantly, so the VGA port and laptop work fine.

When I connect the ADI monitor to a different laptop, an older WinME laptop, it works fine instantly. So the monitor works fine.

In display properties it shows the monitor as a non-pnp generic monitor. It says the driver is installed and the device is working correctly.

I decided to try a different driver, so I looked online to find a monitor driver, but when I tried to install it, Vista said it already had the most up to date driver installed. And monitors usually run anyway even without the driver, so I am not sure if looking for a driver is the way to go.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Is that possible?Yes, you can connect your AIO to your laptop if the laptop has a HDMI port.  There are two HDMI ports (In and Out) on the AIO.  You will use the HDMI Out.  You will have to buy a HDMI cable.  Port #2 in the diagram is the the HDMI out. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Possibly

It depends on the frame rate, and resolutions you would run on the computer screen and HDMI monitor. In either case your 1 Gig GFX should be able to handle it

What would be more important? having a higher frame rate on the LCD, or better resolution on the HDMI monitor?

This is a real tricky one, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Basically the problem is:

We have a laptop, which like many laptops has an external display connector (standard 15 pin D-SUB VGA) but also like many laptops looks for an external monitor & if it can't find one (presume via the sense lines) disables the external output.

3 Modern flat panel displays I have tried work fine but 3 older CRT's do not (they come up initially when the computer boots then at a point it the startup when it does the check the external signal shuts off). I have to get it working with one of the CRT's.

Yes, I can force it to output with keys function/F12 but it has to be an unattended feature during power cycling.

In the cable can I short a combination os sense pins to mimic the newer screens so that the external VGA output is always on.

I have tried shorting pin 11 (Sense ID 0) to ground and pins 4/11/12 (sense ID 0,1 and 2) simultaneously to ground but still the laptop does not detect the monitor.

This should be really simple but it isn't I have spent hours and hours researching on the Net to no avail.

Hope someone can help.

Regards
Lee Gibson

Hi, I've looked on this forum for the solution for this problem and couldnt find one.

My laptop has 1280x800 resolution and when I connect it to my external monitor (samsung 22" TFT) and I change to a higher resolution, its fine for that session. But when I reboot my laptop, the screen that appears on the samsung TFT is completely different resolution to the high-res one I chose prior to shutting down.

So everytime I reboot, I have to reset the resolution to the high one and the settings never get stored! Its very annoying because it wastes time and also the desktop icons get messed up on each bootup.

Anyone have any ideas on how to make the settings stay in memory so I dont have to switch back to high-res at each startup??

Thanks!

Hi All,

I bought a new laptop without OS, it's a XMG advanced with i7 4700MQ CPU, an Intel HD grafics 4600 chip and an NVIDIA geforce 765M GTX.
I installed win 8.1 and updated all drivers. The laptop itself works fine. Now I wanted to connect an external Monitor ( HP w2207h) The laptop recognizes that there is an external Monitor and that it is an HP w2207h and tries to extend the desktop to it, but the monitor itself says that there is no input signal via the HDMI input and it goes to sleepmode.

When I connect my old Laptop to it, it is no Problem, the monitor shows the extendes Desktop, so the monitor an all cables are OK. (old Laptop : Win7 core 2 duo CPU geforce 9600M GT )

With the new Laptop I have the same problem, when I try to connect it to my LG TV set via HDMI, the Laptop recognizes the TV and tries to extend the desktop ( I can move the mouse out of the internal display to the TV ) but the TV says there is no input signal.

I have set the Output to 60 Hz and different resolutions and tried to duplicate the display or only use the external one. Nothing helped.

I can't force the Laptop to use the Gforce, he decides which one he wants to use.

A friend bought the same laptop and made the same installation, but when he connects to his external moniotr everything is fine, but I don't know what kind of monitor he has and I have not connected my laptop to his monitor.

Does anyone have any advice? I'm getting a little desperate.

Thanks

Hi there, I have seen some posts on internet, concerning connecting an external CRT Monitor with a Laptop computer. They pretty much said that there might be a blue cable with, and one can use it to connect that monitor with laptop. Now I am confused that mine monitor has two cables; one of which is blue and the other one is white, having three larger pins inside. Both these wires are connected to my desktop CPU. Now my question is that, it is obvious that the blue wire can be connected to my laptop but what about the other one, this wire is connected to the power supply of my desktop pc, and when it comes to laptop, would mere one wire (blue) suffice for the electricity or other things? Thank you for reading, waiting for your replies. Thanks!

Hi, this may be a bit tought to answer but I currently have a Sager 5620 laptop for about 2 years now and around 2 monthes ago the LCD on the laptop decided to die thus it only displays a "White Blank Screen" at all times when it is on. The rest of the laptop works fine so I decided to use my Hyundai L70S LCD monitor as the external monitor. My problem is that whenever the laptop boots up it goes straight to the Laptop's LCD and attempts to switch to the external monitor but the monitor displays "Video Mode Not Supported" but once it goes to Windows XP Log On screen it works fine. The reason I need to get to the boot-up screen is because I need to access the BIOS but since I can not see the actually BIOS I seem to have a problem. I have tried a CRT monitor but it displays some frequency error but works fine once it reaches the Windows XP Log On screen.

Hi All,

I was running the Windows 8 CP on my PDC laptop up until this weekend when that machine died.

I picked up an Asus R500V from Micro Center. Everything seemed to be OK, but when I hook a second monitor up to the laptop nothing happens. The laptop my come out of power save for a second or so, but goes right back to thinking it has no signal. I've tried with several different monitors and with both the VGA and the HDMI ports. No luck.

I went out to the Asus website and downloaded the NVidia driver from the Asus support site. Now it's got this weird thing where it thinks "something" is connected (I can drag the mouse over) but it doesn't really seem to know what it is and doesn't recognize when it's disconnected.

This is the third laptop I've installed Windows 8 on this weekend where there was some sort of show-stopper; tried an HP, no drivers for the WiFi, tried a Dell, no drivers for the main display. I'm getting a little worried and can't keep taking laptops back to the store.

Does anyone have any advice? I'm getting a little desperate.

A:Help! Can't get external monitor to work on my new laptop

Hey,

Drivers are no problem. Let me know whatever you need and then I'll request a little specific info. Once I have it, it's all butter from there.

As for the external monitor, first thing is to check that Windows is set to supply 60 Hz for the refresh rate to it. If it is set at anything other than that, change to it.

After doing that, if there is still no luck, try running a Windows Update while the monitor is connected to the machine. It might give you a monitor driver.

Dear all,

I bought a new laptop a couple of weeks ago and connected it to an external monitor. It's Ben Q 1080p monitor and I noticed that when I plug it into my laptop and play a game on it (Injustice) I was getting quite bad latency. Not only had the game slowed down in speed, but the characters were out of sync with their voices.

I've always been a desktop man, so I don't understand why plugging an external monitor into a laptop will give latency. I purchased an HDMI 2.0 cable in order for it to work as I got no image with an HDMI 1.0 whatsoever.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ever since I switched to Windows Vista Enterprise Edition 32 Bit I have been having some problems with my dual-monitor set up. My computer is a Fujitsu Tablet PC and is about 2 years old, and my external monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster941BW.

For some reason once I go and use the intel display options and set up the extended desktop everything appears to be fine. However when the Windows Vista security screen pops up asking for you permission for a specified action it gets rid of my extended desktop and just kicks everything back to only my laptops display. This also happens when restarting the computer and doing "Ctrl + alt + delete" to open the task manager. It is extremely frustrating and I was wondering if anyone else had this problem?

I am not sure if it is just a problem with vista or if I need a new driver since updating from xp, even though my computer says it is the latest driver for the monitor.

Thanks

I have the new Acer Aspire laptop and a TV which I use as a monitor. They have worked together very happily some time now. But yesterday I had to do a forced shutdown when the start button would not work and the TV screen shrank in size and there were error messages. When I rebooted, the TV monitor stayed black and a computer screen came alive for about 10 seconds as it was rebooting, then went black. I disconnected the TV from the computer and started her up and the computer screen behaved itself.
Even if I set all of the display parameters to indicate only one screen (the computer screen), if the TV monitor is connected to the computer, I end up with two black screens.
I have tried many display duplicate and extension.
No new software installed.
There is one clue. I disconnect the TV monitor from the computer, boot up, choose duplicates to display. Then I connect the TV monitor to the computer. What happens, for about one second, is that both screens light up.
What is going on? Help please.

A:Both laptop screen and external monitor go black

If you are still getting the black screens when starting up there is a useful shortcut you can try. Press the windows key + P. This will give you some options to try different combinations of TV monitor and/or screen.

It sounds like you might need a graphics driver update or roll back to a previous one it is has recently changed.

It walked me through the steps to find this info. I see that I have file version 5.13.01.70567-7.50.16. The Intel website has this Note:
If the "Intel® Graphics Technology" or "Intel® Extreme Graphics" or "Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver" tab is not shown, you may have an out of date version or an OEM version of the graphics drivers installed. Contact your system manufacturer or motherboard manufacturer for the latest video drivers for your system. Reference video drivers are available on support.intel.com. '
Am I out of luck, as I do not see an Intel Graphics tab at all.
Can I not display my image onto the external drive without using Extended which is not what I want, as it seems all this does is expand across both monitors the image and my cursor.

Hi there,
does anybody know ow to instruct Windows XP to restore the correct refresh rate for an external monitor on XP?

I know this problem now for many years. Windows (2000 and XP) does not reinitialize the monitor refresh rate for the video card after
reboot
switch internal/external video on a laptop
plug the laptop in a docking station
To clarify, in many circumstances the refresh rate is the same as it was configured before, but only in the display of the dialog (Desktop; right click --> Properties; Settings tab; Advanced button; Monitor Tab; Monitor Settings - System Refresh rate). It shows the rate it remembers, but the video card is set to the default of 60Hz.

How do I know? I can see it flicker. I used not to, but getting past my 30s made me see it.

Using now a tablet PC/laptop as my main computer and plugging it in and out of a docking station multiple times a day makes the procedure to correct this (Go to this very deep place and choose another rate) very annoying.

I was wondering if anybody knows a fix for this or a quick scripting utility that could automate the reset for me.

Thanks for any help

Hey everyone,

Yesterday I hooked up an external monitor to my laptop. It seemed fine until today (I used it one day with the laptop, today is the second day). Now when the screen is black I see fuzzy lines like waves running down the screen, not too apparent but enough where you can see them scrolling down from a distance. I can hardly see them right now as I am typing this since the background on this website is lighter.

However, when I go back to my desktop I see them. I tried adjust the power cord and VGA cords thinking it could be those. It is sitting on a table with nothing magnetic around. Any ideas?

Thanks!

I am trying to get a Dell 17" LCD (non-widescreen) to work as an external monitor with my lenovo X300 laptop (widescreen). I thought this was plug and play but apparently not.

The monitor works on previous widescreen laptops so I know its not on that end. I have had this montitor working on this laptop before but have since installed a new HDD and reinstalled all OS & SW from the system recovery disks.

I am not pro at this but I have checked everything I can think of from video drivers, display adapters, different resolutions. no luck on any thing.

Any help appreciated.

Does it even pretend to try to work when you press Fn/Fx (whatever key combination IBM uses)?

Look in the Advanced properties of the video drivers. I know the Dells we use sometimes require a kick start in the drivers.

I'm hoping someone might be able to help here. I have a Dell XPS 15 (i5) - Windows 7 Ultimate installed. I had to do a fresh install, but have managed to update all drivers as appropriate and everything seems to be working really well, with all system diagnostics reporting all to be OK.

I want to get an external monitor so that I can have a larger visible workspace when working from home. I thought this would be really easy to set up but have had some problems. I purchased a Samsung SyncMaster P2270HD, which is supposed to be a TV and also PC monitor. When I connected everything, all seemed to go fine, except that the monitor sharpness was very poor - nowhere near sharp enough to work from, as if letters had a bright surround but were hazy at the same time. Also, the laptop screen was too big for the Samsung screen. I installed the accompanying software and tried to make various adjustments, but without any improvement in quality. I also had the problem that the power source was faulty, in that it would not switch on consistentlyand the power connector buzzed! After a call to the support centre citing the power supply, I returned the monitor for a full refund - I suspect the only fault was the power supply.

I would very much like to buy a large monitor for the laptop, but am wary now due to the clarity/size problems mentioned above. The connector between the laptop and monitor is HDMI and I have a good quality cable for this.

Can anyone suggest why I may have had the ... Read more

I've attached an external monitor to my laptop

I got a popup - I didn't read, and just click on something and clicked next
What happened was that I chose 'choose to display on the external monitor'
This is causing big problems

All I wanted was to choose 'extend to the monitor'
No what happens when I connect this monitor is the fact that it becomes the main screen
So that's where the taskbar is
OK, so I can move the taskbar - but the setting isn't saved

I've spent ages looking for where to make the settings change to allow me to have the same choice when I originally connected the monitor - I can't find it anywhere!!

+ The other settings seems to be of no use - the options to have the laptop as the main screen is greyed out

HELP!!

Thanks

A:Problems attaching an external monitor to my laptop

Hi I take it that you have used the usual method of getting to the display settings? ie. r/click on desktop/personalize/displaysettings etc and tried to alter the default display that way.
another tip is to try the function key in addition with usually f3,f4,f5,f8 or f9 (sometimes there is a small monitor shaped icon on one of the f keys, if that's so then that's what you need to use, pressing the fn key in addition to the relevant f key should get you back to the internal monitor being assigned as main monitor, then you can go back into the settings and adjust your external monitor as an extension of the main monitor.
Sometimes you can also change the monitor settings from the bios, during boot up go into the bios and look for the display settings.

I recently got a new monitor (samsung sync master s27b350), and when I connect it to my laptop (alienware m11x r2) it works perfectly fine through either vga or hdmi

UNTIL I close the laptop's lid. Then the image on the external monitor either flickers or goes completely black (I have settings to 'do nothing' on lid close).

All my drivers appear as up to date and working, and with the lid open, there is no flickering.

I have tried several different cables of each hdmi and vga all with the same results

This didn't happen for the first 3 days with the new monitor, but then the problems started shortly after

what could be causing this problem?

thanks!

Hi everyone.

I have a MSI GS60 ghost pro gaming laptop which has Intel HD graphics 4600 and Nvidia GTX970M GPU, CPU i7 4720HQ, running Windows 10. I study abroad, several months ago i went back home and plugged-in my laptop to the TV via HDMI for gaming like normal. Yesterday i bought an ASUS VC239H external monitor and tried to do the same thing, but there is no HDMI input signal, the Laptop cannot detect the monitor (include display settings, intel HD graphics settings, nvidia settings). This is what i tried:

- Fn+f2, Fn+f8 keys, windows P switching to duplicate or extend or anykind of options
- plug the monitor into my friend's laptop with windows 8 through that HDMI cable and it works fine, the same with other laptop running windows 7==> cable and monitor are normal
- plug my laptop to my neighbor's smart TV. There was ''connected' symbol which appears on the TV but black screen instead of image, Laptop couldn't detect the TV
- reinstalling nvidia and onboard-graphics drivers and update to the latest
- Made a clean install of windows, tried windows 8 also but the same result
- Updated my BIOS and EC
- Bought an adapter HDMI-Mini Displayport to use the mini displayport with HDMI cable

nothing works

Im sorry that i copied my thread from other forum to here therefore some problem with the text color

Are you using the same cable when you tested w/ 4 monitors? Something similar happened to me a while back and it was due to a bent pin. I was able to straighten it and fixed the problem.

I posted a thread for quite some time about our laptop having issues with its own screen. Now it's fixed, I was wondering how we could make our external monitor as primary. The screen doesn't work now but the laptop is usable.

We plugged in a VGA adapter to a monitor and it shows up. It starts on the "Welcome" screen. I would want to know how we can see from boot, the logo, "Windows is starting"(i think that was it), etc.
Thanks in advance.

A:How do I make external monitor as primary for laptop?

On some laptops, if you have an external screen plugged in, both the LCD screen and the External screen will show the POST, Starting Windows, and then the login screen. Some laptops do not, as the external could be only ran by the Operating system. I used to have an old Acer Aspire 5536 with Windows 7 Home Premium x64, and I would have an external screen plugged in for gaming. My system always booted from the primary, and never showed on the external until Windows was booted.

You can set it as your primary in Windows, but not as primary in the BIOS, unless there is a setting to change that.

I have a laptop that appears to boot up as evidenced by lights, fans, etc, but no longer displays anything - even if I navigate into the BIOS. I expected that if the display panel or inverter had failed, it might still be capable of displaying on an external monitor but conducting a toggle with the Function Key and F5 key fails to display anything on the external monitor.

Does all this point to a new motherboard or have I forgotten something? TIA for your comments.

I have a acer 6930g laptop with nvidia 9600m gt graphics card, and a viewsonic va2213w monitor (22" and native res of 1920x1080 @60Hz).
When in windows i can't get the monitor to display at 1920x1080, it will display at [email protected] However I can select the resolution in both windows setting and the nvidia control panel, but it just display 1400x1050 even though it says its displaying 1920x1080, i know this because the screen is all wierd and the monitor's osd says its actually at 1400x1050.
When running linux on the same laptop i have no problem display [email protected]
I have tried older drivers, pstrip and a few other solutions all to no avail.

Hi guys i'm hoping someone can offer me advice as I have a serious problem with my laptop.

I installed SP1 a couple of weeks ago and all has worked fine (except DVD Shrink which won't now load.)

I also installed Ubuntu 8.04 around the same time and for the past two weeks I have had an awesome dual-boot experience.

The other day I bought an external monitor and installed the driver with no problem, the screen worked and I set it as clone dual screen setting.

Upon rebooting however my laptop will not start properly. The lights come on and it tries for a second then powers down. If the power cord is plugged in it then tries again 2 seconds later automatically and stays turned on, however the screen is completely dead, the hard drive does not sound like it is doing anything, no keys have any effect and I have to hold the power button to power down.

I have tried booting with the Vista recovery disk, the ubuntu live cd and the Flash BIOS DVD I used about a month ago. The drive spins the disks and reads for a few seconds then stop and nothing.

I am suspecting the graphics driver and SP1 are the culprits but could also be something to do with the GRUB bootloader in ubuntu or could just be hardware failure.

If someone is able to at least indicate which is likely and if there is any way I can at least get the BIOS back and working I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks

I have an external 4k UHD monitor connected to my HP 8470p laptop. (I project content only on external monitor and my laptop screen is off)

The settings on Windows 7 have been configured to turn off the display after 1min (my laptop is still on and never shut off or put to sleep).

After a min of leaving the system idle, my monitor screen turns off and immediately within a few seconds turns on, a blank screen appears and displays my input source (in my case would blink "Display Port" a couple of times). Then a few seconds later turns off. This keeps looping forever and my monitor never sleeps.

Can anyone please help me resolve this?

I have a laptop as my main computer and I have it hooked up to an external keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Sometimes I like to unplug everything and just use it like a normal laptop. When I use the Fn+F5 key to change to the internal display, the resolution is still the same from the other display. It is still readable but there is a black space where the screen could expand to. I tried to (while hooked up to the external display) change the resolution of the secondary monitor (the internal one) but it keeps just copying exactly what is on the first display (the external one). If I change the resolution on one monitor, they both change to that. If i click "Identify" it shows a number "1" on both monitors. I could just change the resolution every time i switch monitors but then when i plug it into the external one it is a little distorted (enough that i could navigate to change the resolution back though)

Or is there a batch or vbs script that could toggle the resolution between the two?
The two resolutions are: External: 1024 x 768 Internal: 1280 x 800

Hi All,
I just purchased a Envision flat screen and have hooked it up to my Toshiba Laptop but can't seem to get the display to appear on my external Monitor. During boot-up the Windows XP logo does appear on the external Monitor and then nothing after that. Toshiba wants to charge me $35. to give me the steps to go through what needs to be done. They did say to press FN and F5 simultaneously, but I'm using a wireless keyboard which brings up my Windows Media Player for the F5 function. If anyone has any experience with Laptops and External Monitors I sure would appreciate some assistance.

Thanks,

M

A:Laptop and No Signal to External 17" Monitor

To use the FN and F5 you must use the laptop keyboard not an external keyboard.

You can also activate the monitor by going to Control Panel -> Display -> and the Settings tab. There you should see both monitors and if you right click on it you should be able to enable the external monitor. Additional if you click on Advanced you should get additional video card options that you can use to specify what you have connected and how to use it; ie. clone or extension.

And if you have the manual, which you can also download, it will give you specific instructions that deal with your exact model and video drivers.

My Friend has a HP Pavilion DV2000 Laptop. His display isn't work. Suddenly display gone. But I thought it could be Display problem not a VGA. So, i tried to connect an external monitor and used Shortcut keys to change the display. I pressed fu + F1 or Fu + F2 or Fu + F3 or Fu + F4 up-to F12. But no result.
I couldn't check whether it's a Display or VGA card problem. IS there any other way to check it. in addition to these is there any other combination keys to Change the display to an external monitor. I'm unable to check whether i get login or not. if I can login then i can use Windows Key + P. Then i can select mode. But I'm Unable to anything here. Please help me to find the problem and i have to take it to repairing shop.

A:Change display of laptop to external monitor

It should be the Fn + the key that shows a monitor symbol. If it still doesn't display, the motherboard video processor has failed, and not the LCD Panel
