Outlook 2016 hangs at "processing" after Windows 7 update, Feb 9, 2016

Q: Outlook 2016 hangs at "processing" after Windows 7 update, Feb 9, 2016

"Patch Tuesday" broke our install of Outlook 365. It was working fine on Monday and on Tuesday it was hanging on "Processing." So I restored back to the last restore point before the update and it worked great after that. Yesterday it re-installed the updates, and again Outlook didn't load. Restoring again today "fixed" it. Now it wants to update again, so I will disable updates until the problem is fixed. I don't know which particular "patch" is causing the problem; there were about 22 of them that installed.

My computer that had been running the Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium since early 2009 had become an appliance:  It worked every time it was turned on and it handled every network transaction that came through my DSL line.  I had set the "Windows
Update" program to check for updates periodically, every month or so, and then to inform me when ever any update was available.  I could tell when the "Windows Update" program had been checking for updates, as the CPU usage went up to 100
percent with the used memory amount "sawtoothed" up and down for about 15 to 20 minutes.   The "Windows Update" then would tell me about the available updates and it would ask whether it should load any of those.

This  worked until about January 2016.  At that time, the "Windows Update" CPU usage would stay at 100 percent for more than an hour.  After that, it gradually got worse:  Around June 2016, it held the CPU at 100 percent usage
for about 14 hours.  In August 2016, the CPU is held at 100 percent usage by the "Windows Update" for more than 45 hours with no end in sight.  It did find some updates to load, but it would not load them as the CPU had no time to do that.

"Windows Update" is currently holding the CPU at 100 percent load  this every time the machine is booted up until all of the updates are loaded and it can not do this as the C... Read more

Desktop PC was previously my W8.1 computer.
I had backed up all my data as at 31 Dec 2015 in preparation to upgrade to W10.
I had 3 separate 2TB hard drives in this PC with backups to internal second and third drives.
All three hard drives were partitioned into two 1TB partitions.
All three 2TB hard drives are Samsung HD204UI 2TB models (now all out of warranty period)
This Deshtop PC was then updated to W10 on 4 Jan 2016 (after creating a new restore date in W8.1).
Luckily I also backed up to separate external hard drives.
Now a W10 Desktop PC it died during Critical Update 18 Jan 2016 for "unspecified" error. W10 desktop PC just stopped during this update with following problems;
1. no BSoD - just totally blank dark screen.
2. unable to switch off, or reset or power off via PC.
3. had to turn off power supply after 6 hours (of hoping something will happen).
4. unable to restart PC - BIOS loads - then W10 logo appears (Flashes on) - then PC just hangs. At least it now resets to restart.
5. unable to start into safe mode. or any other variations of safe mode.
6. After some 10+ restarts attempts - now get option to restore to an earlier date - my last W10 restore date was 15 Jan 2016.
7. Restore failed for 15 Jan 2015 due to "unspecified error". Tried again 3 times with same result.

Too add some background I finished building my PC two days ago, the 17th of Jan so I wonder why it still needed updates after first booting . The problem is that a couple minutes after I got the some notifications for a windows update saying it is a needed update so I decided I would let it update the first time also I believe some updates from 2013 and 2014 were included among them. The first time I try the update it seems to be successful until at 99% of the update completion the screen went black, automatically restarted the system with the MSI bios options then went straight to a "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause." prompt at the top with the Recovery option and the start windows normally option. Obviously starting the windows normally didn't work, so I tried the recovery option of automatically "repairing" which didn't properly work for some reason, even though it allowed me to access my account again some files were deleted like Uplay and Steam and some of my games though it left the desktop shortcuts. I thought hey, maybe it would work a second time so I let it update again and BOOM the same problem again. I googled other solutions beside the "automatic repair" option so I tried pressing all of F8-F12 and none of them showed me to the advance boot options menu, so I decided to go with the recovery options again and then again it deleted my redownloaded Uplay and Steam and then some documents I ... I recently upgraded to Win 10, also installed Office 2016 Pro Plus. My Brother all in one printer scanned to email easily on Win 7, no longer does, Brother could not figure it out. I tried sending to email from Word, get "mapi failure, unspecified error".
Hoping that if I can solve this, scan to email will also work.
I have researched this issue for many hours, can find no solutions that are not old ones, referring to files and directories that do not exist. Tried renaming mapi32.dll (after installing the "take ownership" app.), to no avail. It never gets reinstalled. Tried copying it from a newer laptop, still no joy.

Using Windows Live mail client, set as default in Windows 10.

Most of the posts I can find on the internet regarding the mapi failure are for older systems, this is very new Windows 10, and new Office 2016.

Very disappointed in Microsoft issuing new software that will not work together!

Source: V2016 Beta is HERE! (2016.11.1.2234)

Hi all,

I am excited to announce the release of first beta V2016: AVAST 2016 B1 (build number 2016.11.1.2234).

Compared to the last "boring" beta releases, this is again pure beta with bugs so feel free to report them back via forum or new feedback form in the program.
We also welcome any feedback on the new features and changes, of course.
Changes:

NEW: Passwords - Avast can now manage your passwords and generate strong passwords for you. Just one password to remember.
- checks your passwords security
- stores your passwords securely
- includes browser extensions for easier logging in and form filling
- generates strong passwords

NEW: SafeZone browser - Replaced the SafeZone for safer shopping and banking

- Pay Mode: runs automatically on banking sites (This isolates the session and protects it from possible keyloggers or other malicious software secretly lurking on your computer. With Pay Mode you can perform all your financial transactions in peace, without fear of your password or other personal details being stolen. Pay Mode can be also turned on manually directly via browser UI.)

- Ad Blocker:The browser comes with built-in Ad Blocker that blocks all those annoying online ads and banners

- Video Downloader: Another cool feature is built-in Video Downloader that allows you to download online videos and store them to your hard drive. Now we support just limited amount of sites (youtube, vimeo, strea... Read more

Hi all,

I have Office 2016 for Mac, and when I add a link on Powerpoint, on opening it appears the message:

"Opening path/filename.
Some files can contain viruses or otherwise be harmful to your computer.
It is important to be certain that this file is from a trustworthy source.
Would you like to open this file?"

Then you can give the approval to continue and it opens.

This is happening when I add a hyperlink of a PDF file or video file that is saved on my Mac (El Capitan).

On the other hand it works properly if I add a hyperlink of :
1. The web
2. Word file

I disabled Macros and turned down firewall but same issue.

A:Avast IS 2016 / Panda IS 2016 / Bitdefender IS 2016

What kind of system do you have?
Panda and Avast are the lightest while Bitdefender can be heavy.

All 3 offer excellent protection (Avast requires tweaking; Bitdefender and Panda works out of the box), while Bitdefender is mainly known for its detection rate (signatures).

Try the 3 of them (trial versions, not the 6 months) and see which one you prefer.

In terms of UI, all 3 are user friendly.

This is an on-going problem and I am at my wits end.

What I have: Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, 64bit, no additional software installed since I could never get past the update issue.

The symptom: went attempting to run windows update it says "searching for updates". It never stops "searching for updates" until I close or end the program. I have let it run for 2 days straight.

What I have tried:
1. Did the "clear the cache" fix, (stopped BITS and windows update services, deleted SoftwareDistribution folder, then restarted), no change
2. Attempted to install updates manually, it hangs on "searching for updates on this computer".

3. Even when trying to install the system update readiness tool does not work.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank you

A:Windows update not working, hangs while "searching for updates"

I decided to start over, even installed a new, factory fresh hard drive (I have planned to do this in the future and thought this would be a good time to do it).
I installed Windows 7 Ultimate, 64bit, SP1 from an original windows disk.
I activated windows successfully and started windows update.
It does the same thing as before, just says "searching for updates" and never does anything else.
Could it be my hardware? I have a good fast internet connection to most sites. Memory tested good.
No driver issues seen.
I did notice when I installed windows, all the window colors were set to red.
I don't remember seeing that before. I changed the color to the default blue color.

Thank you for your continued support.

Hi everybody. I have a problem with Windows Update. It just permanently hangs on the message, "Checking for the latest updates for your computer . . ." I'm not sure what to do about this.

I've tried a few things, and they haven't worked. so any help would be very welcome.

I have checked the settings on the BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) and I also checked the Automatic Updates service. It doesn't appear that anything is wrong with these or the settings are off. I deleted the catroot2 folder in system32, but that didn't fix it either. (I made a backup. No worries.)

I'm using Windows XP with SP2 installed. I have Internet Explorer 7 installed, and all the windows update sites are added in the trusted websites list.

So, what do I do?

---------------------------------------

Okay, I think this was fixed after I installed Windows Genuine Advantage tools. hmm....

A:Windows Update Hangs - Stuck "Checking"

I too experienced this problem. After contacting tech support for Windows Update they gave me several things to try. Then the problem progressed to offering the high priority updates which I said to download and install. Well the update process froze at "Preparing to Download". Then I made a further discovery that if I let the download process run for 10 to 15 minutes and then abort it with the Task Manager and then return to Windows Update, and select "Custom" the updates had downloaded and were ready to install.

Through such convoluted actions I was finally able to bring my system up to date.

BTW, during this time Automatic Updates never offered an update.

Good morning,

I just registered, so I'm not entirely sure how this forum runs. I'm assuming you can see my computer information in my user profile, but please let me know if you need me to post it here again.

When I run Windows Update, it hangs permanently on "Checking for Updates." No error ever displays.

I ran Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [October 2014] from Official Microsoft Download Center according to the Windows Update posting instructions on this forum. It completed, but had no effect on my issue.

I also ran the Windows Update diagnostic from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058. It returned error 0x80070490.

I have attached my CBS file.

Thank you for your help,

I'm hoping y'all can help me with this issue with my friend's system, running 64 bit Home Premium, Avast, and Java, Flash etc. all updated. It's stuck at "Checking For Updates."
Yesterday I installed an update to the Windows Update Client, KB3138612, and the System Update Readiness Tool. After that, 62 updates were ready for download, and I successfully installed them. After restarting, a window came up to upgrade the browser from IE 10 to IE 11. I did so, then ran Windows Updates again to check for security updates to IE 11. Stuck in an endless loop again.
I reset the Windows Components with FIXIT 971058. This resolved two errors: Reset Windows Update Data Store (Root Cause) and Service Registration Missing or Corrupt. Still stuck in a loop.
I installed the latest version of the Windows Update Agent and rebooted. Still no joy. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I looked over the contents of the CBS.log before coming to this forum. Something is definitely wrong, but I can't make heads or tails of it.

Hi everyone, I think I've got a fairly tricky problem here.
I just finished installing Windows 7 Pro (SP1 included) x64 on my laptop. Pretty much the first thing I did was go to check for updates. This was taking forever, and upon looking at the resource monitor, it appears that svchost (you can just which services
it's hosting) was hung at %50, or one CPU core. No HDD activity to speak of, just a process spinning its wheels.
I've tried multiple troubleshooting steps, from running the Update readiness tool (Which didn't find anything wrong), resetting windows update using multiple tools, running an SFC (which said the system was in perfect condition), and of course rebooting
several times in between.
Checking the CBS log file, there are many lines reading "Failed to internally open package. [HRESULT = 0x800F0805 - CBS_E_INVALID_PACKAGE]". Windows Update appears to soldier on past that however, where it apparently reads out its last cached package
(successfully it would seem) then stop dead. When I net stop wuauserv, the log seems to mention TrustedInstaller a few times, then that's about all the interesting information I can gather.
The WindowsUpdate.log file is not terribly helpful either; just before the hang it says "PT: Synchronizing extended update info", then it lists off a ServiceId and Server URL. Nothing after that!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I have a Toshiba r700-181 (PT310E) work laptop. It is running Windows 7 x64 Enterprise.

It has one 4GB stick of ram which is PC3 10600. Windows works fine with this.

I have obtained a 4GB stick of ram which is PC3 12800. With just this one in, Windows works fine.

However, if I have BOTH sticks put in, the BIOS recognises that there is 8GB installed, but Windows fails to boot.

It gets stuck at the "Starting Windows" screen. If I restart it asks me if I want to start windows normally or to run the Windows repair. If I try that I get the message: "Error: 0xc0000225. The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible."

I tried using a Windows 7 System Restore disc but that doesnt work...

If I try either of the sticks in the laptop one at a time, then Windows 7 boots up fine.

Is this just down to the laptop not being compatible with the mixture of speeds? I thought that if they were mixed it would just use the lower speed by default?

So confused

A:F-Secure Internet Security 2016 vs Panda Free Antivirus 2016

If a security soft ranks amongst the top performing AVs, it won't matter much if it does function correctly or causes problems on your specific system.

From lab test results F-Secure has an edge over Panda during testing the past few years in terms of detection (although higher false positives).

From users, it seems more prefer Panda - which is one of Neil Rubenking's (PCMag) favs (that don't mean much - but that is just my opinion).

I'd say, in terms of overall protection, Panda has a slight edge; it might protect your system in a few instances that F-Secure will not.

About one month ago, a new problem surfaced:

Most times when I try to "Save As" a document and the application calls Windows Explorer for me to Browse where to save the file, it hangs for upwards of 60 seconds. The Browse window appears, but then I get a "spinning circular cursor" for 45-60 seconds until I can do anything. This occurs in all applications from MSExcel through Internet Explorer.

The system never completely crashes, but there is always this 60 second lag now.

The lag also occurs when I try to open a document...and to a less extent, but sometimes, when I simply open Windows Explorer (Windows Explorer is inconsistent as to whether it will give me a lag...sometimes it does work fine).

I have previously tried posting in the malware forum. I had picked something up they found...and cleaned it out, but that seems to have been completely unrelated to this as it was a virus redirecting my Google searches.

Can anyone help?

After having installed the Windows 7 04/2016 updates today, I found that I couldn't start Firefox anymore - it just hangs and uses up 1 core. Then I tried IE - hangs and eats up another core. Same for Chrome and Opera. Then I began to suspect EMET and started
Word 2010, Adobe Reader, Thunderbird, WL Mail - all the same. Applications not opted into EMET continued to work.
I then tried to deactivate EMET's mitigations one by one and found that I had to disable "EAF" mitigation to use my apps again.

(I didn't yet try to find out which of the updates is the root of this by uninstalling 1 by 1, since WU took so long (hours) to find updates _at all_ that I haven't yet dared... Maybe later I'll try to install the updates manually on another machine and
see if I find sth.)
Is it just me who's seeing this?

System: 32bit Windows 7 Enterprise, EMET 5.5, all updates from WU (except MSRT) installed.

I'm actually on Kaspersky Antivirus v2016, and i was wishing to go to the freeware side. But i definitly do not want to sacrifice security. Does Panda offer same or even better security than Kaspersky, or shall i rather stay where i am?

Any opinions are welcome.. Thanks in advance

A recent cumulative update for Exchange 2016 was intended to add support for Windows Server 2016. But, after numerous reported issues, Microsoft has acknowledged a problem exists.

According to the release notes?

If you attempt to run Microsoft Exchange 2016 CU3 on Windows Server 2016, you will experience errors in the IIS host process W3WP.exe. There is no workaround at this time. You should postpone deployment of Exchange 2016 CU3 on Windows Server 2016 until a supported fix is available.

Once again, Microsoft?s testing of its own patches seems to have taken a backseat to accelerated release deadlines.

Hi,

I have a new Inspiron 7359 and whenever I am listening to something, and unplug the power, the sound goes staticy and crackles for a few seconds. It does this in addition to continuing to play whatever I am listening to. Plugging in the power does nothing, its only when unplugging it.
Is this a known issue with this computer, or do I have a hardware defect and I should return it?

I despise windows 10. I was forced to upgrade two days ago. The pop up had been happening for months and I was able to just disregard it. Where was the option NOT to upgrade to W10!? Eventually it somehow froze my windows update because it gave me no option to install other important updates without installing W10. I got that fixed eventually and stayed on 8.1 for a while longer. They made the force-upgrade even more forced recently. I had to either hard shut off my PC by holding down the power button (not good) or to install W10. So I did.

I have a $2,000+ PC and it's slow now. I have almost no programs etc installed. It's not my fault. It was fine with 8.1. I don't even want to get into the hacking the registry and changing all these things around to try and get it faster I have read about others having the same upgrade problem, I would rather just spend the $100-$200 and buy the OEM windows 10 and do a full clean install after support ends for 8.1 in 2018.
I bought (forced like all XP users) 8.1 and got used to it and it wasn't so bad after a while. Of course the whole new GUI was not welcomed. If it 'aint broke don't fix it. We are used to doing things and navigating by second nature and then they go and change that.
And this W10, it auto set me back on the group network and has my location and everything public. Few people want that especially by default.
so anyways, since I upgraded to W10 from 8.1 does this mean after 07/28/2016 it will auto roll back to 8... Read more

With my continuing efforts to assist my brother in tailoring his new ThinkPad (X1 Yoga) laptop, I've recently discovered an unexpected problem relating to Microsoft Office, and specifically (at this point), with Word. As indicated in this post's title, his laptop came with Office 2016? pre-installed. Subsequently, Office 2010? was installed by his I/T staff to eliminate the extra expense of leasing (via Office 365) or purchasing/activating the resident Office 2016 code. But Windows seems determined to make using Office 2010 unnecessarily difficult.

Specifically, regarding Word 2010, with .docx associated with this 2010 version, whenever one clicks on a .docx document, Windows pops up a message stating something like ? this is a rough paraphrase; I can't recall the exact wording ? "This application cannot run on your PC. Please go to the Microsoft store to find an application that will work with this file." However, .docx files open easily from within Word 2010.

Being curious, I'm all for understanding the how's, why's and wherefor's of this seeming impediment, but I don't want to unduly burden any readers/respondents with an explanation. I'd be happy just to learn how to correct this situation; i.e., to be able to click on a .docx file and have it open within Word 2010.

Perhaps it's necessary to uninstall Office 2016. It might be preferable to find another solution, in the event my brother may (at some point) want to go ahead and start using Office 2016. ... Read more

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I couldn't find it. Since Windows Update leverages Active X and SCCM in turn leverages Windows Updates, am I correct in assuming that after 1/16/26 when pre-IE 11 versions are EOLed, that any system that does
not have IE 11 installed will not get ANY updates at all? Not just IE updates, but any updates because of Microsoft Updates reliance on Active X/Internet Explorer. Is that correct?

Has anyone experienced any problems with the above Windows 7 update. On my system (Windows 7 Professional 64bit) it caused a system freeze with a flashing cursor at top left corner. Power button and reset button frozen. After 20 minutes the only way I could get the system back was to pull the mains plug for 10 seconds - it then recovered and installed updates. When trying to update with Windows update, i get a spontaneous reboot or a bluescreen-crash.
The filename "lzx32.sys" is mentioned.

The updates i'm trying to install are the following (roughly translated from norwegian):
"Update for Windows Media Format 11 SDK for Windows XP (KB939399)"
"Windows Tool for removal of dangerous software - march 2007 (KB890830)"
Other than that, i believe i have all other windows-updates.

I do however recall there beeing a third update on the list when i started the installation for the first time.
After the third or forth spontanous restart/bluscreen, when i figured something was wrong, it has disappeared from the list.
I do not know if it actually got installed or not.

I've been following the 5-steps-before-posting as good as possible.
From my normal startup programs msn-messenger and daemon-tools were shutted down before the dss-scan.
Here are the three logs (panda-activescan, dss-main and dss-extra attached):
PS: note that the "extra.txt" is from the first scan, which was done abit earlier than my last scan where the pasted "main.txt" is from.
This is because i was unable to get a fresh "extra.txt" from the last scan (no minimized window at all).

Hello deralickt and welcome to Seven Forums.

Are you receiving any error codes? Are you able to boot your machine in Safe Mode? If yes, see if you can access System Restore and go back to a date/time prior to the update. If you don't have a restore point you could also see if that update is showing in Windows Update History. If it is, try uninstalling it.

Safe Mode

System Restore

Windows Update - Uninstall an Update

The failed update may have damaged or corrupted some system files. From Safe Mode you could try running a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are noted run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Since you have an install DVD you could also try a Repair Install to fix your currently installed Windows 7 and preserve your user accounts, data, programs, system drivers, etc.

Repair Install

A repair install may require that you reinstall a bunch of Windows Updates. I found it's safer (but more time consuming) to install just a few at a time rather than all at once. If you install a few at a time you can reboot, see if there are any issues, and if there are, you'll know exactly which 3 or 5 or 10 updates you need to remove. Reinstall them one at a time. They'll either all install correctly or you'll know exactly which one(s) are problematic. (If you install all at once and later find out there's a problem it's almost impossible to know which update is inv... Read more

When Outlook Express is opened, every e-mail that was sent "return reciept requested" causes Outlook Express to try to send a return receipt, which then fails resulting in an error message.

OE ignores all changes to the "return receipt" functions and continues to try to send them even before they are opened; when the mouse hovers over the particular e-mail.

A recent malware infection (which has been removed) caused a change in the registry and turned off Task Manager (which has been corrected). I suspect the problem with OE is also a registry issue, but cannot Google any information on this specific function or issue.

Two questions:

1. Is there a registry entry that controls the fuction of OE's "return receipt" function ?

2. If OE is uninstalled & reinstalled, will the stored e-mails be lost ?

An aggravating factor is that sbcglobal does not have a configuration setting to prevent duplicate e-mails from being downloaded and a recent change to the e-mail account by sbcglobal has resulted in the messages being duplicated 2 and 3 times in OE, and it is attempting to download another 4000 ( ! ) more, which will also all be duplicates.

This "return receipt" problem is preventing the ability to delete the duplicate & unwanted e-mails, so OE's functionality is reduced to nil.

Also, is there a static limit to the number of messages that OE can store & manage ?

When I went to the Windows Store this morning there was an update to the Windows Store. After installing the update I found I could no longer open the Windows Store either from the Windows Start tile or the All Apps Menu. A friend of mine also did the update and he now can no longer open the Windows Store. Tried using the WSReset.exe command but that did not work.

A:Windows Store Update of 27 January 2016

I had all sorts of grief on Sunday with this. Had same issue, see this thread Windows Store won't open after update this morning

You could try a system restore to the point before the update and see if that fixes things. MS really knows how to make life difficult. A possible observation is that having the store open when you try to update it might not be a good thing. Different people report different outcomes. But when I got my store back again I noticed the update for the store was pending again. I quickly changed my Store update settings to auto rather than manual and quit the store. After leaving it a while I re-opened the store and the pending update was gone and my version number had updated indicating the update has succeeded silently in the background.

There's a new Windows codename on the roadmap: "Redstone."

Brad Sams at Neowin unearthed the existence of the Redstone codename on April 7, calling it the "next Windows update coming in 2016." According to my sources, he's right.

Here's how to think about Redstone, based on what I'm hearing.

Windows 10, which was codenamed "Threshold," will be released this summer, Microsoft execs have said. My sources say there will be a minor update to Threshold some time this fall (which still will be known as "Threshold,"), in addition to the other, smaller regularly released fixes and updates that Microsoft will continue to provide before and after Windows 10 is released to manufacturing as part of its "Windows as a service" model.

Microsoft's 'Redstone': An update to Windows 10 due in 2016 | ZDNet

A:Microsoft's 'Redstone': An update to Windows 10 due in 2016

Is Redstone the first Windows 10 update?

Quote:

This story has been updated
Windows 10 might be well on the way, but that hasn't stopped Microsoft's next Windows project - codenamed Redstone - from peeking out publicly for the first time.

First reported by Neowin, the Redstone project will be a Windows OS update next year and it's thus far unclear whether it will refresh Windows 10 or be a part of Windows Server 2016. Redstone will be released in two waves, one in June of 2016 and one in October 2016.

The Redstone name itself comes from the Microsoft-owned Minecraft video game where it is a construction "block" and this follows the policy of naming projects after features from games such as Cortana and Spartan from Halo.

Effective October 2016. a single update package will be delivered via Windows Update with all the available updates included without the possibility to select which ones to install. It's all or nothing.

Hi all,

I've been having a problem with Windows updates on my (Win7) pc for some time now.

Downloading the updates usually doesn't pose a problem, but after rebooting it says "error configuring Windows updates reverting changes". That's when the loop starts: my system reboots and tries to configure the updates again, fails and reboots etc. The only way to get out of this is to press F8 and use system recovery. After this happened today I checked Windows update. All of the updates failed except for one(?).

- So far, I downloaded (and ran) the System Update Readiness Tool.

- I ran the SFC scan. It identified a number of problems, but it was unable to fix all of them.

- I can't include Windows update error codes in this post, because they do not appear (anymore). Therefor I check the update history instead.

Please see the log collection attached to this post.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Bas

So I have this weird thing happening in my relatively fresh install of Windows 10.
Whenever I search for "Check for Updates" or "Windows Update settings" on the search box of the start menu, I get the results that I want but if I press enter or try to click on those results nothing happens.. As far as I know I can click all others search results but those, and maybe others related to windows update.

I can still get updates by going to Settings>Update & Security though.

In my other computers this works fine, and as far as I can tell all the updates are done.
From what I've searched around other people seemed to have a similar issue where they couldn't acess the settings at all which isn't my case. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results.

Please clarify what did you mean by "no results".

1. No integrity violation.
2. Found corrupted files and repair is successful.
3. Found corrupted files but unable to repair some of them.

We are a small company with about 20 users connecting to a terminal server.

here is the problem:
current user profiles will run the first time log on installers ex "setting up settings for IE 6" or the office user configuration wizard. these are long time users who have already done this a wile ago.

a user will log on to the terminal server, in this case the system admin, they will start outlook 2000, do what they need to do, then upon closing, the dialog box: "please wait wile outlook closes" hangs

However; when a new user profile is made, the installers do not run and the outlook closing box goes away in about 3 seconds. all the applications are running fine. this has been going on since the original install of the server

it would be best if we didn't shut it down, users log into it 24 hours a day (we provide a 24 service) I do however have an idea how to get around this problem, but it doesn't fix the problem. I would like to know what is going on with it to maybe implement a better solution

Thanks

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

My Windows update has stopped working altogether, it just hangs on "checking for updates", I've left it on overnight, still nothing. I've tried sfc /scannow (both in Windows and from boot), the readiness tool, running chkdsk /f /r, and the Windows troubleshooting fix. Also, every time I start up my pc I get two pop up messages:
Error: -3 from inflate incorrect data check
Error decompressing shell32.dll

I'm almost certain my HD needs to be replaced but I thought I'd see if anything can be done before going through that. I've attached the CBS log and the windows update log from event viewer. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

A:Win7 Update hangs indefinitely on "Checking..."

Follow these instructions exactly.
First, set Windows Updates to never check for Updates.
Next restart your computer, then install KB3020369, if not installed.
Then install KB3172605.

Windows updates should return to normal. You can then reset your updates to automatically check for updates if desired

Hello, everyone.

My Windows 7 Pro is genuine and have been working OK for a long time until today precisely at 20:30h GMT -03:00.

The notebook was idle, I was away for 30 minutes and when I came back it had a message saying: "Windows' been not properly shutted down". Ten minutes later a BSOD (IRQL_NOT_LESS...) occurred. And then random BSOD (DRIVER_IRQL_NOT..., tcpip.sys, ntoskrnl, etc) occurred.

Since i didn't change ANYTHING (hardware or software), I tried to run Windows Update to solve the problem. Then I noticed svchost.exe was with high memory usage and went back to normal when I stopped Windows Update service.

This is what I did to stop (so far, 45 minutes) the BSOD:
- Downloaded and installed this KB (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=51853);
- services.msc > Windows Update > Disabled, and;
- Control Panel > Windows Update > NEVER check for updates.

The last time i successfully ran Windows Update was 09/Feb/2016.

What do I do? I read that many people are having issues with Windows 7 Updates. I don't want Windows 8 or 10, I like 7 and have NO reason to upgrade.

I attached the DM Log Collector in this message.

Thanks in advance.

Another Windows 10 update causes trouble, this time with Word 2016

By Darren Allan,

It's a minor issue, but an annoying one for some

Microsoft hasn't had much luck when it comes to tweaking its various bits of software of late, and the Redmond truck has suffered another update fender-bender, this time affecting Microsoft Word 2016 users running Windows 10.

The problem has been caused by a Windows 10 update unleashed late last week, namely Cumulative Update KB3124200, which Microsoft noted made some tweaks and offered "improved functionality" for the OS (yes, a typically vague patch description).

Except it didn't improve Microsoft Word's functionality, and as The Register reports, it caused Word's Normal.dotm template to be renamed, then recreated and reset to its default settings (losing the user any customisation and macros saved in the template).

Not normal

As 'Rob L', Group Engineering Microsoft Word, posted on the Answers.microsoft.com thread regarding this issue, what's happening is that the existing Normal.dotm is being renamed to Normal.dotm.old during startup.

So the good news is that this is simple to cure, as all the settings are still saved in this file, which is easy enough to recover from the Templates directory. If you're affected by this problem, check out the full instructions on the link posted below

Hello,
We have a windows 7 x64 professional that's having trouble to update KB3143693, it always give you error code 643 in windows update.
We tried repairing the .Net Framework 4.6.1 and that did not work, and also other Microsoft fixes in which when you apply the fix it just tells you that it failed and it rolls back. I also manually downloaded the KB3143693 to apply the update and it
fails.
Does anybody have the same issue and how can I fix it?

Thanks!

So, my system was working fine up until the WIN 10 updates dropped last week, now I'm having positively maddening display issues that I can't seem to resolve with updated drivers, etc. Basically, what I'm getting is:
SUPER sluggish response on the desktop: i.e. move an icon, wait for it to manifest; drag a selection box, equally delayed and choppy regeneration, etc. Like 5+ seconds, ghosting you have to wipe with a window, and whatnot.Open windows not populating with visible content, white or just plain transparent to the desktop when opened. Glitchy blocks as you drag them around. But oddly enough, things like my usual software and the browsers are unaffected (unless you go to save that is) inside their receptive interfaces. I'm having no issues typing this right now, for instance.

What's going on and how to I alleviate it? It has to be some driver conflict as when I startup the issue is fine for a bit, then as startup progs fire up the crapstorm begins. Is there some fix I can apply, or is there a way to rollback the drivers? My video card is a Nvidia Quadro K620, and I've got the latest drivers on here... like I said, everything was golden until WIN 10 updated. Help a brotha out! Big thanks in advance.

A:Display issues after February 2016 Windows 10 update.

Go to the Windows Updates section of all settings and click advance to view your update history. Check to see what drivers if any were installed.

You may want to run check disk. errors on your hard drive can cause performance issues like the ones you are describing. Right click your hard drive, choose properties, click tools tab, and schedule a check disk for your next reboot. It may auto repair if errors are found.

You can right-click the start menu and open device manager to view your devices. From there you can roll back drivers but i don't recommend doing this unless you are sure it is a driver issue.

Sorry if this has been asked before, please point to the appropriate thread. I have Nero 2016 installed and I noticed that when using Nero Video and import large video files (over 4GB) or many small segment (500MB) video files (over 5-6) it can hang. Windows 10 seem to suspend the process and all I can do is wait (for ever) to recover. It doesn't allow me to end task (Access denied). If I also try to end task Explorer it will hang as well. The only solution is to reset the computer using the reset button on the front. Is there any work around apart from importing small files and appending a little at a time (not really convenient)? How can I allocate more RAM to Nero Video so it doesn't hang? Running as Administrator or setting priority to high, doesn't make any difference.

Thank you in advance.

PS: The problem occurs at my main PC (8GB RAM, see my specs) but I saw it a couple of times in my notebook (Windows 10 32-bit, 4GB RAM). Since I mentioned my notebook, it has Intel graphics and latest Intel software won't allow me to adjust the shared RAM. Is there any other tool to force the Intel graphics to use less RAM? Since it is a notebook, there is no such setting in BIOS either.

To anyone that can help me out:

I purchased a windows anytime upgrade key and upgraded my system from windows 7 home premiuim to windows 7 ultimate now when my windows tries to update I get this: (See image titled "message")

To bring you up to speed as to what I've done so far:
I ran sfc\scannow and no errors were found
I downloaded the hotfixes and apllied them and still could not update
I tried to do a system restore to the point before I upgraded, but I could not perform one because all of my previous attempts to update windows automatically creates a system restore and all the restore points were within a 24 hour period
I installed a system update readiness tool as per "windows help and support" dialogue box

To see the updates that did not install, refer to the image titled "update"

Really, I feel like I've done my homework and I've exhausted my efforts as to how to fix this problem. I'm currently going to school for computers and so I really like to apply what I learn in real world situations, but this one has got me stumped!

I'm also attaching my checksur.log I don't understand it now and it looks like a foreign language to me, but as I progress through my information systems degree I hope one day I can become a techsupport forum partner.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

I get hints (nothing specific) from online searching that since my service provider (Time Warner) doesn't use MS Exchange, that the syncing can't be done. Can anyone verify that?
My mail is transferred cleanly, but contacts and calendar won't come over to the phone.

A friend is using OE with XP (Home) - SP3 installed. Also uses AVG.

She normally leaves her computer on continuously, but does periodically reboot it.

Recently, after being on for much of the day where she has used OE a time or two, OE will hang. Clicking on the shortcut or going to the program file and trying to open the application results in not activity. Checking the Task Manager shows that OE is not a running application.

Once in a while, a window appears saying, "An Unknown Error has occured".

The only way to resolve the problem so far is to reboot the computer, which is a bit aggrevating.

Any suggestions?
