WARNING

As I've test the incompatibilities, patches, and scripts on my virtual machine, I have made tweaks to this configuration both concerning system and settings. The tweaks I've made to this system are critical and will cause system instability if not configure automatically. In addition to that, I've made custom scripts made with AutoHotkey to optimize the compatibility of some of my security software. These scripts are unique to each software and are converted to an executable. If you wish to copy my configuration, PM me or do extensive research as the scripts and settings that I made for my configuration are critical to compatibility and optimization.

Cool ... The permutations for a good "free"security config are almost endless IMO..
I see less reason for a config "not" to be free.

Personally,I would recommend..(as you say that your friend is not too tech-savvy)...
1) Free Isolation - Sandboxie
2) Free Anti-Exe - Voodoo Shield
3) Free AV - Avast, AVG, Avira (and/or Crystal Security)
...Plus (as you said) uBlock Origin

When you create a thread in the Security Configuration forum, you will need to fill-in some fields with your current security setup. However at some point you may need to install or uninstall a program. When this happens you can update your thread security setup by doing the following:

1. Within the thread you've originally created, click on the "Thread Tools", then select "Edit Thread Fields".

2. An overlay window should now pop-up. These window will contain the information that you've originally posted. Edit the fields that you would like to update, and then click on the "Save Changes" button.

That's it. Stay safe!

I wanted to post something for New or Novice members that can help them better understand PC security.
We have some top notch members who really know their stuff, but some of that, if a user has not been exposed to it can seem a bit overwhelming and confusing. So here is a video from Nova on security basics.
I found this one hosted on a Mozilla Site and wanted to share this with the Novice members who may benefit from it. Enjoy.
I will add more here as I find them. Thanks

Hello Boni:
I was following the instructions on the forum from the member named "Broni"; posted June 26, 2013 for  the Toshia HDD/SSD alert information error message. Upon downloading the tool "Security Check" tool, something very strange happened; I dowloaded the Security check, but, when I clicked the "SAVE" button, the tool just started all by it's self in the command prompt; it also opened notepad with some kind of results; all--- by it's self. I Was unable to save the tool to the desktop, or, make sure the the boxes that were indicated to be check, were "indeed" checked off because, "I never saw the tool".
I opened a new window in notepad over the results that opened, and started to write the forum about the command prompt issue; I was about to copy and paste the results to the new page that I was writing for the forum, but, the document had disapeared. I went to the documents library, to see if the "results" document was there and simply "untitled"; so, I saved the new page, clicked on "Save as", and labled it as "Boni"; I went back to the documents page to see if the "Boni" page was saved; It was alo missing. I then came back to the forum, and downloaded the tool again, this time, it showed up as a download in the download area with no choice to "Save as" for the desktop; also, there is no download (1) in the download area, only the second one I just downloaded. I forgot to save it to the "Desktop".

I just bought a Toshiba notebook with XP home edition installed. I am using it as a wireless notebook with a LinKsys router. Everything works fine except for the Config Free program which came installed on the Toshiba. I have wireless access to the internet without any problem. I have called Toshiba support three times so far but they can't seem to be of any help.
When I turn on the Config Free program, I get an error message that my wireless communication switch is not turned on even though it is turned on. The program starts fine, the blue radar screen loads but I cannot see any networks on it and it tells me that the wireless lan is (disable)...sic.
The program worked perfectly for two days at the beginning but has not worked since. I keep getting an error message.
If anyone has any suggestions to why it tells me that my switch is off and ways to fix it, I would really appreciate it.

first off you should only have one anti virus program installed on your computer. did you use norton's uninstall tool ? run the tool , restart , run the tool the second time.

Securalive free vs 360 Total Security vs Panda Free

A:Securalive free vs 360 Total Security vs Panda Free

360 Total Security Essentials is all that is needed. With Avira and Bitdefender engines enabled, RAM usage is high... but only when interface is open or scanning. It will only be a real problem if user always has interface open.

Protection far outweighs the RAM usage. Plus, 360 Essentials is very user friendly.

Maybe you could use a anti-executable like NVT exeRadarPro , it uses low resources and then complement it with an On-Demand scanner like Hitman Pro ; so you will be protected without having a real-time AV eating up your resource usage.

I keep a casual security config. I don't keep a bullet proof security setup because it is cumbersome.
Also my device is slow and weak which further discourages anything elaborate.
After reading other configs, I decided to get a strong AV ie Kaspersky, changed my dns to Norton, maxed my Adguard settings and do monthly scans.

A:RVS Security Config

If you have a slow device than kaspersky should not be your security program of choice. It runs heavy! Especially if you have a laptop ; it sucks the lifeblood out of your battery. You would be better of with win defender , emsisoft anti malware or eset. Ad kb ssl enforcer to your browser as an extra security meassure. Also think about getting a backup program like aomei backupper standard , better safe than sorry Thanks for sharing your config!

Hi !

My current box:

HP netbook Atom N450, 2GB RAM, 1 TB HD.

Running a customized Windows NT 5.1 (XPSP3) patched with POSReady updates until EOL in mai 2019.

I only run my OS in stateless ramdisk mode for performance, security and privacy reasons.

Just started using security and antimalware software.

I used an unpatched XP with NO Firewall and NO antivirus for several months and I never got infected as far as I know. (The C drive gets flushed after reboot so it's hard to tell)
For a long time I exclusively used brain + ramdisk to stay out of trouble and I has worked like a charm.

At the moment I am busy hardening my OS to stay safe in the future.

Using my "obsolete" Windows XP daily for online payments and banking without any fear...

A:NT Five's Security Config

Best config I have seen in a long time = anti-executable + light virtualization + outbound network notifications ... I would not change a thing.

How do you have your RAM Disk configured ? Net cache only or have you added apps to RAM Disk image ?

Very good config.

A few notes and additions:
You might want to add a firewall application, since Avast Free Antivirus does not include any network firewall or HIPS (behavior blocker) components. These components are an essential extra layer of security.
For these tasks, I would personally recommend COMODO Firewall (free) which contains three powerful security modules:
1. Network Firewall (allows you to control connections coming in or going out of your computer).
2. HIPS ("Host Intrusion Prevention System" checks any file for suspicious behavior and allows you to create rules for how that file should run and what it can do on your computer).
3. Sandbox (virtual environment for isolating unrecognized or potentially malicious applications, so that they cannot harm your actual system or files).
COMODO Firewall is an extremely powerful application, and with a little bit of configuration it can become a very effective security layer. In case you run into any trouble configuring COMODO Firewall, there are many COMODO users here on MalwareTips who are all eager to help.
If you see that you do not like COMODO Firewall, you may use Sandboxie as a virtual sandbox application for isolating suspicious files and running applications (e.g. browsers) securely in an isolated and protected environment, without having to worry that any malicious files may harm your computer. (note that Sandboxie ... Read more

It's primary advantages include:
Very high-level physical system protection with minimal resource impact
Compatibility between installed software
Simple configuration (I'm not saying Comodo is simple to use; for novice it can be difficult)
It works and is sufficient for day-to-day computing...

Bottom line is that it works very well both on my specific system and for me personally. Consequently, it is security configuration that I will continue to use...

It's primary disadvantages include:
Adguard and KeyScrambler Pro\Premium are paid software; Comodo and KeyScrambler Personal are freeware
Implementation and learning curve with Comodo (but there is always great help for those determined to make it work)
User does need a moderate amount of IT knowledge

Nice configuration, but turn User Account Control to either Default or Always Notify, also state if you have Zemana Anti-Malware Free or Premium, if you have free it is just an on-demand scanner, not real-time protection.

P.S: You wont be able to update your configuration until you're taken off moderation (it is to prevent people breaking the rules).

You could also add other browser extensions like uBlock Origin, Ghostery, HTTPS Everywhere and Web of Trust

You should add a second opinion scanner such as Zemana Anti-Malware Free or Malwarebytes. It is crucial a backup/recovery plan to safeguard your personal data . You can use Windows default or third parties, such as Aomei Backupper.

Hello,
Here is my security config.

Update: 2/12/2015
Real-time Protection:

ESET Smart Security 9 (potentially unwanted applications: ON; potentially unsafe applications: ON; Removable media scanner: OFF)
HitmanPro Alert 3
NVT EXE Radar Pro (lockdown mode) + (block all process exetuted from external devices)
MCShield 3 (1st layer USB infection prevention)
Privacy:
Added F-Secure Freedome VPN

Browser:
Added Cyberfox and remove Firefox (all browser run inside the Sandboxie)

Other Applications:
Added some "exploitable" applications (reason why I add HMPA)

I do this setup to minimize removable media infection, because my machine works with a lot of removable media file transfer. "Shortcut Viruses" is currently popular malware spreading throgh USB here. The bad thing is, ESET eventually can't detect and remove this virus, MCShield does! So, I disabled ESET's USB scanner and put MCShield to do this job.

One thing, I am a happy clicker on the internet + (Common Sense Internet Security 2016: ON )

May this setup looks overkill? But I dont faced any issues nor system slow down.

Haters might say that Immunet sucks and why would you use that. Well, the newest version (5) is much better and works like a charm, tested it myself and it has a very nice detection.
Haters might say why don't you use a firewall and a zero-day component. Well, I actually don't need a firewall (yes, DON'T NEED) because I don't handle weird stuff in my real machine. Also, Immunet does have some sort of zero-day capabilities so I'm fine with it.
Even though Avira is disappointing at the moment, their little browser extension is very good and I use it for its web filtering capabilities (Immunet doesn't have that one covered).
I also use uBlock to get rid of these nasty ads and keep my sanity at a decent level.
I use MBAM as a second opinion scanner, and VT uploader to clarify things.
I'm not using OS updates because you know why, I don't like that guy that wears glasses, is the richest man in the world according to Forbes, and still pretends tons of money from us.

GlassWire is a network security monitor, but not an antivirus, you are at risk if you only use it as real time protection on Windows 7!
You can add Avast as a good solution.

Hello everyone

Can someone has more suggestion to secure my PC at extreme level

A:Vishal's Security Config

@Vishal Kumar Singh

Welcome to MT.

You already have decent security configuration.

At the most extreme for Windows you can harden Windows OS, add Software Restriction Policy and Anti-Executable software, and finally, light virtualization software.

The most extreme would be to migrate to Linux - but I don't think that is what you wish from your post.

Hardening the OS involves researching tweaks and disabling features in W7 that are never used.

Software Restriction Policy software include Blue Ridge Network AppGuard, Excubits Bouncer and NoVirusThanks Smart Object Blocker.

Anti-Executable software includes NoVirusThanks Exe Radar Pro, VooDooShield and Faronics Anti-Executable.

Light virtualization software includes Sandboxie and Shadow Defender.

My signature shows a popular configuration amongst some security soft geeks.

Notice I have no AV suite installed - don't need it.

I don't bother hardening the OS except for a few tweaks - such as disable remote assistance.

Hi,
My Kapersky Total Security is about to expire so I need to think about if I want to renew it or simply go to the free AV route.

One thing to consider is that I have Malwaresbytes (lifetime) installed, so I though that maybe paired with Windows Defender could be a decent option to keep my PC secure.

I'm downloading some torrents, so yes I could grab some viruses one day, but I don't click on everything that look untrusty.

Could Windows Defender do the job paired with Malwarebytes or should I renew Kapersky (+/- 20$ for a year)?

A:Chojo's Security Config

If you like Kaspersky then by all means renew it - but Windows Defender, Windows Firewall, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium, Automatic Updates, UAC and Windows SmartScreen is really sufficient as long as you use common sense.

You should download Sandboxie and sandbox your torrent(s).

liubomirwm said:

I haven't used Kaspersky Security Scan but probably deem it unnecessary with YOUR configuration as you have HitmanPro which uses Kaspersky and Bitdefender engine, as for herdProtect the false positive rate is massively high but in return you should get outstanding detection but some drawbacks are: If files need to be analyzed in the cloud it will take over half an hour and you will need to re-scan and also the signatures it has in the cloud for the 64+ engines are quite outdated so for detection against zero-day and especially zero-hour malware don't expect much. As for more on-demand scanners consider the following:
1.) Zemana Anti-Malware Free: Zemana AntiMalware Free - Limitless Scan and Malware Removal!
2.) Emsisoft Emergency Kit: Emsisoft Free Emergency Kit: Portable malware scanner | Free removal of Viruses, Bots, Spyware, Keyloggers and Trojans
3.) Comodo Cleaning Essentials: Comodo Cleaning Essentials | Download Free Malware Removal Software

Cleaning:
1.) CCleaner: CCleaner - Free Download - Piriform

I am looking for firewall, other than Comodo because it's not fully compatible with my setup and I had some issues with it in the past. I am also not comfortable with Windows bult-in as it can't block outgoing traffic. Thanks in advance for your answers! Please also list some comparatives as I wasn't able to find any and rate my current setup ZonerAlarm Free Firewall (or paid?) looks good, what about that?

A:RXZ6Q Security Config

Looking good! Everything is covered nice and you have lot's of on demand scanner, which is good
For firewall ZoneAlarm is a good choice. It has been a very decent firewall for years now. The only thing that is maybe a bit annoying to it is that it is not that light (or at least it wasn't in the past when I tried it) and it has some advertising screens from time to time in the free version. But apart from that it is worth considering.
Another good free one, but maybe a bit harder to configure right and with lots of options is Privatefirewall.

This is my first security config posted in MalwareTips. I guess it's quite good because it's for a very old PC (10 y/o) and I needed to find very light security.

Both Zemana AL and HitmanPro.Alert are incredibly light. I have disabled Keystroke Encryption in HMP.A because ZAL already has it.
Additionally I installed Unchecky - my family members sometimes don't look what they click during installing Firefox is protected with great uBlock and very light BitDefender TrafficLight.
I do have on-demand scanners on the disk, but to be honest, I make scans not so often - I have to say that the PC hasn't been highly infected for a long time (few years). Current old PC will be replaced by the new one in next year, so I will propably provide quite deeper protection. But I have to remember that protection should be pretty automatic, for my family.
Right now, if ZAL and HMP.A won't conflict each other, I won't probably change anything, I'm pretty sure that this protection is good.

Thanks for sharing your config, but you have an anti-all pc, well is not a good idea, if i were you i would use malwarebytes into passive mode /free mode/ uninstall comodo firewall and xvirus as bitdefender total security cover what those programs does. And i would recommend you to uninstall and leave only the necessary extensions, due to the fact that they consume a lot of ram and make the browser more unstable and some time they may crash. in resume just use what you need. is not true the fact that with many antimalware soft you will be protected, it is the opposite.

Comodo and bitdefender are not good friends... having them on at the same time will cause a hole in your firewall... because none of them will be able to work correctly
