Is it possible to open the volume mixer instead of volume control

Q: Is it possible to open the volume mixer instead of volume control

Hello, Ten Forums!

I was wondering whether it were possible to open the volume mixer instead of the volume control when left-clicking on the volume icon in the tray. At the moment I have it set to open the old classic menu, but not the volume mixer.

So, is it possible?

Thanks.

Hey, it's me again

Magically, I had no problems with vista until yesterday. I ran an game (.exe), and the sound was surprisingly low. I have In-game sound set to 60%, but it wasnt near as low as it was. I was running Mumble in background (TS/Ventrilo style program) and i could hear people just fine as it should be. Weird indeed, but i wasnt really bothered... Today I ran another game (.exe), and it was too low too. So I checked settings in-game, everything was okay. Then I went to volume mixer and saw it changed the exe. to 6%. Why should it do that, I dont know...

Any clues of what might cause this?

EDIT: Ive had the "Allow applications to take exlusive control of this device" turned on, that was the reason. But hey, there is the solution if anybody else has this problem.

EDIT2: There still is some issues :S

I tried to remove un-needed windows components & I guess I removed windows sound mixer & volume control. Now when I try to place the volume control in taskbar or access the sound mixer, I am instructed to install them in add/ remove programs. I have tried this (several times) but these items are not listed. I even tried exploring the restore discs that came with my pc but cannot find them. I'm really not sure what to do! I guess I was hoping someone out there has encountered the same problem and can tell me what to do. Please help!

Try to do a repair-install using the windows software for the computer aka. recovery disk and you will need it for this. This should replace the files.

Hello guys,

I searched the forum for common problems but unfortunately I could not find any useful information for this issue.

I hope you can assist me as the Windows 7 volume mixer is freaking me out and I cant seem to find a way out with this...

I run Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron 6400 and I use the volume buttons on front a lot to increase/decrease/mute the sounds... however this feature is not working with Windows 7 or maybe I have not fixed the correct settings.

Also I have a Logitech MX610 mouse with volume buttons on it that don`t work as well.

Here is a screenshot of the volume mixer.. I`m not sure if that`s helpful..

Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance guys

viachy, welcome to the forums.

For the volume buttons on the laptop, is there or did you install a driver for it? It may or may not be needed, but from the sounds of it, it is.

For the mouse, what version of Setpoint do you have installed? The latest is 4.80 (for Vista, but works well in 7),

Running windows 7 64-bit. Having trouble with opening my volume mixer. Does not open at all from taskbar or when i try from control panel>sounds. Ive tried looking up this problem on google, but I can never get mine solved. My speakers and headphones still work, but i need to take out the usb from the headphones each time i want to switch where the sound comes out from. Ive tried restarting my comp. Also validated files in sys32 folder from admin cmd. I just dont want to have to run a system restore to open this up.

A:Volume mixer does not open.

Reinstall the sound drivers, and that may take care of the problem. Use the correct PC Vendor (or motherboard or sound card vendor) drivers as they are the preferred and usually work best drivers.

A:Volume mixer becomes unresponsive when I change volume

The G35 headsets I found, doing a search, are 7.1 surround sound headphones, USB connected and with a volume control in the headset cable. Is this what you have? If it is you should apparently be controlling the volume from the headset's volume control and not the PC???

Hello everyone! I run Windows 8.1, and have been having a strange issue lately. A reformat and fresh install did nothing to help this.

Seemingly at random, in my volume mixer, specific programs will drop to 10% level. If I turn the volume all the way back up, it'll only go back down a bit later. I've tried this with / without my realtek drivers. Also, I've set the option under "Communications" in playback devices to "Do nothing", and this still hasn't helped. Any VoIP programs I use I've turned off ducking, and yet the problem still persists.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you!

ok so this problem was just about from the beginning. i thought i would be patient and it would go away. at first i noticed that while using msn messenger, its volume control for voice chat controled the main volume for the whole pc. so if it was low things wouldnt sound as high as i wanted. no matter if i adjusted the main volume in the control panel, which was always set to highest, the volume would still be at the mercy of Msn M. so if it was lower than usual i would have to sign into msn m and adjust it. not only does this happen with msn m. it also happens with web video applications used by youtube, livevideo, etc etc! those arent usually the culprit of low sound. its usually just msn m. even now with live messenger i have the issue. im tired of being patient so here i am

Is your sound generally working but just not for this program? Anyway, go to your start page and just type "volume" (without the quotes). You do not need to type into a search box or anything else... just be on that page and a menu will pop up. Then, click on the options boxed in red and your "mixer" will pop up:

Short Story
Wave meter in volume control keeps stopping. I googled it, seems to be a virus. Performed a virus scan, came up with nothing. Did it with another anti-virus program, also showed nothing. Need help. Thanks.

Long Story
So basically, I wanted to watch a youtube video. When I played it, there was no sound. Thinking it was a simple volume problem, I checked the video volume, the small icon on the taskbar, and even went into the control panel to adjust the volume settings. I thought it might be my headphones, but I tried using the speakers and neither worked. I tried doing the voice playback, and then I could hear my voice. I thought maybe it was fixed. Played the video, no sound. At that point I thought it was my sound card. I didn't want to replace it, so I kept trying to look for a better solution. After much frustration, I managed to make my way into the volume control. Start - Control Panel - Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices - Adjust the System Volume - Audio - Sound Playback: Default Device: SoundMAX Digital Audio - Volume - Wave. I saw that the Wave option was all the way down, and moved it up. After moving it, I could hear the video crystal clear, so I closed all the windows I didn't need anymore. Well, after about 30 seconds, the volume shut off again. I went back into volume control, and the wave bar was all the way down again. I raised it, and closed the window. I was looking for the apply button to become available, for I had assumed that not app... Read more

mmmm....actually i've had a very similiar problem....not quite sure how i fixed it though. Try updating your drivers for your soundcard, that might help. Also(obviously) go into control panel, and mess with things from there. Also, do you have any errors with any sound drivers of any kind? i know if....kind of nuke some of mine(stupid me) with an anti-adware program....if you have that could be part of the prob, and those usually aren't to hard to fix, just take a little time.

I'm not sure if this happened with 5.55, but with 5.56, when I hit the volume up or down on my keyboard to turn the sound down for everything, it turns down winamp's volume bar too. Sometimes I can move winamp's volume bar up and down and it won't even be working. What causes this? It's pretty annoying for the music to turn down twice as fast or winamp's volume bar to not even work at all.EDIT: Moved to a more appropriate forum

Hi, I booted up my PC today and heard a strange chime when I logged in. Then I saw a Name not Available in my volume mixer.
I went to sounds and selected no sounds and it was gone but when I selected Windows Default it came back again.
Then I went through all the sounds in Windows Default and the sound I heard wasn't there.
I then selected Windows Default again and restarted multiple times to see if the sound was made by Name not Available or System Sounds.
After trying multiple times, I managed to open volume mixer and the sound was made by Name not Available.
If someone could tell me if this is a virus or not and help me remove it, if it is, I would really appreciate it.

When I start my computer I hear a random talk show or something and in my volume mixer there is a volume slider for "Name not available." I'm pretty sure I'm infected with something that is using a ton of resources. In my task manager if i click "show processes from all users" one stands way above the top as far as memory usage. svchost.exe is sitting at 714,024 memory usage and it climbs at an alarming rate even if nothing is running on my computer. I think my computer is being mined. My malwarebytes software isn't picking anything up on a full scan either. I appreciate any and all help with this issue.

Hi all,

after so long I've been using Windows 8, I noticed this feature(?) in this OS. See attachment.

My question is: Why is every application's volume is half of the device volume? I tried moving the bars of the app's volume to match the device volume, but it will go back to the "half"-state again. Any idea?

Is there any way to solve this?

A:Volume mixer

You can move the slider for System sounds, Friends and Chrome up to the level of Speakers.

Hello...Using Windows 7-64bit OS.
Random music, talk shows, etc...all very distorted coming from my PC.
I've tried everything I could possibly do.
MalwareBytes found nothing.
Updated Audio Driver.
Removed anything that I thought would cause this - webcam driver.
Any thing you can do to try to help me.  Thank you very much.

A:Name Not Available in Volume Mixer

It's the Patched/rpcss.dll virus.

You can mute that channel to turn off the ads, but it won't get rid of the infection.

What's going to have to happen is you'll have to run an antivirus scan- AVG free will catch this virus- but it will remove the rpcss.dll which is a critical system file. After removal you won't be able to boot to Windows. You'll need to go to Startup Repair, select the command prompt option, and copy the rpcss.dll file from the X: drive or Recovery Windows partition into your C:\Windows\System32 folder.

If you want assistance I would download and run Farbar x64 (available on this site in the Downloads area) and post the log either here or start a thread in Malware Removal Logs forum. You can probably message a moderator to move this thread there after posting the log.

Good Luck!

I seem to be having problems with the mixer volume fluctuating up and down when i am using msn messenger. The problem started to occur after i had installed msn plus. I do not recall accepting any .pif files or anything that resembled a virus but assume now that i have a virus affecting the mixer. I have run norton virus scan and i also now use avast virus scan too and although it picked up some trojans i still seem to have this mixer problem. Any help in solving this problem is much appreciated.

Hey, I muted a program using the Volume Mixer(the speaker icon next to the time), but now I cant unmute it because it doesnt appear with my other applications even when its open.

I have tried restarting, I am just wondering if there is another way to unmute things like in control panel or if there is a way to make it appear with the other applications in the Volume Mixer.

Thanks.

A:Volume Mixer

It happened once for me with Firefox. I couldn't see it in the mixer. But the next time I started it (not sure if I had rebooted), I had several other programs closed. I just saw it there, normally, and I could unmute it.

Hi everyone,

I noticed the volume of my music was not as loud as it was in the past when playing CD's or MP3 files with Windows Media Player 10. I had the volume turned all the way up in Media player and also in Realtek HD Audio Manager, but the sound was just not anywhere near as loud as it was before. I recently un-installed "Discover stream hub / Discover.exe" and thought that this might have had something to do with it, but that does not seem to be the case.

I decided to try to play an mp3 file with Realplayer and found that with the volume turned up in realplayer, the mp3 files sounded normal again, plenty of volume.

What surprised me is that if I close Realplayer with it's volume control turned up, then open the MP3 with Medial player, it will sound normal in media player, (plenty of volume). If I turn the volume control in Real player all the way down, close it, then play a file with Media Player, there will be no sound at all.

Somehow, the volume control for Realplayer is effecting and overriding the volume control for Media Player. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how this might be happening ? Has anyone else ever experienced this type of thing ?

It's not a big deal now that I found out what was going on, but tracking down problems like this can drive you nuts. It seems crazy that the volume control from one program would control the other, I'm just wondering what might be going on. I'm using Windows XP Media Center Ed... Read more

A:Real Player volume control also controls Media Player Volume ?

Hi John

The reason that this happens is that when you change the volume in real player, it changes the 'Wave' volume for the whole system. I don't pretend to know too much about this but basically, real player changes part of the system volume which also affects the volume in media player. To see this for yourself, open Real Player and then go into Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices under control panel. Click on Advanced Volume Controls under the 'See Also' heading on the left. There should be a column labelled 'Wave'. If you now change the volume in Real Player, you will see this changing also. As a result, it changes the volume system wide. Hope this solves your confusion.

I listen to music a lot on my computer and I put the volume up at around 42. But then my Windows Sounds can absolutely KILL my ears when it comes on for some reason like an alarm I have set or something.

So... I like to open up the Windows Volume Mixer and turn the Windows Sounds down to about 20.

But here's the problem: It won't STAY there!
Every time I turn my computer off and on again, I have to reset it. Is there no way to keep it where I want it to stay?

I have some technical difficulty in fixing the Realtek Driver. I recently bought the ASUS P8P67 motherboard (BIOS version 1204) and installed the provided Audio driver that came with the box which is version 6.0.1.6196.
Other specs displayed in Realtek info page is

DirectX version 11.0
Audio Controler : HD Audio
Audio Codec: ALC892

I am running Window 7 Ultimate on x64 bits with the Sandy Bridge i7-2600 core. Noise Suppression and Acoustic Echo cancellation are disabled.

My problem with this driver is that from time to time, the volume on the Realtek mixer drops down immediately as shown on the screenshot.

Also, to certain programs that I am using, like Battlefield 2, the volume keeps resetting to very low even though I set it to volume level 28 before I closed the program. When I stop the recording or I closed the Midomi website (from screenshot), the tab drags back itself to 28 for iTune and the music played back at normal volume - how can I fix it?

How can I disable Realtek from keeping resetting my volume to low for the programs that I am using? Is this a bug? I tried reinstalling it did not fixed the issue. I tried putting the system volume to 28, and tried recording but the bug still exists.

Any help is welcomed. I tried looking around the forum, but it seems to all point to the BIOS. My BIOS has been cleared which indicated clearing it again will not fix the problem.

A:Volume Mixer keeps resetting.

Does the volume changing ONLY happen with certain programs and/or web sites? Does it happen when you use media players such as the Windows Media Player?

I've run across some programs that will set the volume to what the program wants and when you exit, instead of returning the volume to where it was originally they will either leave it at the program's volume setting or just reset it to zero.

I've seen the same problems with video resolution.

After noticing a tutorial published by Brink for reverting back to the old windows 7 master volume and volume mixer I wondered if it would be possible to change something so that when I clicked the volume system icon, I got the volume mixer right away and not the master volume bar.

I know it is possible to make a shortcut using "%windir%\System32\SndVol.exe -t " as a target and I also noticed running SndVol.exe from system32 seems to open the mixer as well. It looks like windows puts a -f flag onto SndVol.exe when you click the system tray icon.

As posted by Brink

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\MTCUVC

EnableMtcUvc DWORD

0 = old
1 = new (default)

This allows windows 10 to somehow use the old master volume and mixer but I can't seem to locate where windows applies the modified -f flag when clicking the system volume icon. I did notice however, when you then click on the "mixer" link the sndvol.exe relaunches with this as its parameters "SndVol.exe -r 77463382 0 {0.0.0.00000000}.{5fc3904c-eda2-46fb-b353-10e266407892}"

I think that registry value is pointing at what hardware profile is being used (Speakers / Headphones, etc.) in the mixer when it launches but I'm not sure of anything right now, heh. Here is an image showing that http://i.imgur.com/IFlgA9n.png

I have been digging threw my registry for the past hour or so and I was wondering if anyone might be able to... Read more

All started yesterday after i decide to install my new speaker... now is giving a headache to fix to the way that was before.
Basically before i could control all the computer volume but now when i go to volume mixer there is a lot of stuff open and then i need to control each volume for each application...
I want to be able to remove all applications and be able to put louder my volume with only one slider.
here is a picture of the problem:
The Device is my Headset a Logitech G930. when try to turn the volume louder on this slider:

Doesn't get louder like the headphone used to get.
Well i hope anyone can help here, thank you very much.

A:Volume Mixer Problem

That's for analog speaker output, you have USB headphones now, different ballgame. In Control Panel > Sound, you should be able to find those headphones and adjust from there. Alternatively, there should be a driver and program for them too, sou you could set them from there.

Hello,

For some reason when I turn the system volume to 0, other programs do not also go down to zero.

In the volume mixer, when master volume is at full, other programs are at full too, and when I move the master volume slider down, the other sliders go down too...

However when master volume is at 0, I can still hear sounds from other programs (itunes, dvds, browsers) as if they are stuck at 1 volume and not 0

Setting the other sliders to 0 mutes them, and hence when I up the master volume, they stay at 0 and do not go up

Anyone having/solved this?

Now, when I attempt to reset the volume of each program to being the same by dragging all of the volume bars up to maximum, when i then turn the master volume down, Minecraft & Firefox just go back to the volume they would be into proportion of the new master volume. Volume Mixer Resets to 0; will not allow any adjustment. This problem started a few days ago after a Windows update. Then the System Restore was run to prior the Win update. Only helped for a few minutes.

Dell Precision M6300 [64 bit]; Win 7 SP1 Pro Ultimate

Have tried the following:
Set Control Panel > Hdw & Sound > Sound > Communications > Do Nothing
Ran System Restore
After System Restore failed, I installed Windows Codec 4.1.0 4.1.0 [didn?t help].

This problem started a few days ago after a Windows update. Then the System Restore was run to prior the Win update. Volume Mixer Resets to 0; will not allow any adjustment.

Often, if not in focus cannot bring some applications back into focus directly [1st need to minimize other applications or close it with Win Task Manager].

Happens when only running Chrome; also with other programs.
Runs OK for a few minutes after restarting Windows

Device Manager reports all Ok; all drivers up to date including High Definition Audio Device.

A:Volume Mixer Resets to 0

This is a relatively old laptop, but fortunately Dell does have Vista 64 bit drivers which are also applicable to Windows 7.

First thing, if you only have "High Definition Audio Device" that indicates that it is only the generic, basic function Windows installed driver and not the actual driver for the hardware. Dell lists Sigmatel (now called IDT) as the actual sound driver. Suggest you install the SigmaTel as a first step.

Hi all, Almost each time the PC is on uptime the Volume Control fails. I still hear standard windows beeps and such, but can't play music or here sounds in games. When I open Volume Control from the system tray (or indeed anywhere else) I get, "There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware. This program will now close."

It's getting very annoying.

It can happen at any point and has been going on for a few days now. Doesn't seem to point to any particular game or program in use.

Any ideas folks?

Essentially your computer can't see the drivers and software for your sound device. There is also a chance that the drivers are corrupted. What sound hardware do you have in your computer? I would uninstall the software for it, then restart your computer and reinstall.

I wasn't sure to post this in the audio forum or the game forum, but since this has only been an issue with some older games I decided to post it here.

I'm having an issue with some games, most recently Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne, where the Volume mixer just dosn't see the game and subsequently I can't raise or lower the games volume. I tried running it as administrator and in compatibility mode for xp sp2 and Windows 200 but the Volume Mixer still doesn't see the game. The only reason this is an issue is because the ingame volume controls are setup to be either off or at the lowest setting, ear shatteringly loud. I also don't like to move the master volume at all because that changes the volumes of everything else that I have running and I'm very picky about different appilcation's volumes.

Any ideas?

I have an ongoing annoyance, which I've had through all Windows versions from XP or maybe Vista onwards, in that although I can individually set the volume level of each program that makes any sounds, all those volume settings are wiped out and reverted to the much unwanted default level every time the Realtek High Definition Audio driver is updated. So, I'm naturally wanting to backup the settings and then restore them each time they've got reverted to default.

So, could any nice person here tell me where those volume mixer settings are stored? -- Many thanks.

OS: Windows 7
Asus g73jh laptop

This problem started about an hour ago:

I've been hearing ads/misc audio at random times. When I check my running processes I see nothing fishy or out of the ordinary. When I go into Volume Mixer to see what is playing this sound, it shows as "Name Not Available".

It also seems that my computer has been having a hard time even with one chrome tab open (fan is going nuts) which usually doesnt happen.

I experienced a random restart once while all of this has been happening which I'm assuming is related to the issue.

From a google search of symptoms it seems this has been making the rounds recently.

Any help appreciated!

Hi,You got hit with the newest infection. One of your system files (rpcss.dll) has been patched. You'll need more advanced tools to replace that file. Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. Hello!

On my PC I've got a game called Banished that I muted once from the Volume Mixer, because I wanted to listen non in-game music instead.
So now, when I want to re-enable it - I can't. Why? Because Banished does not show up in the Volume Mixer, meaning I cannot unmute it.

I have tried the fixes described in this post - Applications missing from Volume Mixer to no avail.

This is what it looks like:

So, how would I go about solving this problem? Thanks in advance for your help!

A:Volume Mixer not showing muted app

Try this first:
Run the Windows audio troubleshooting wizard:
On the taskbar, press and hold the volume icon.
Note: you can also right-click the volume icon
Select Troubleshoot sound problems, and then follow the instructions.

Also, work through the steps in this Tutorial.

So as of late probably a month or two? I've had an issue where programs would limit their volume until I close other programs such as a game client and this keeps happening.

I turned off the reduction of other sounds when windows detects communications but it still seems to apply even when I join programs such as Discord or Skype where it either makes them the main volume and everything else quiet or makes everyone's voices very quiet until I close programs

If anyone can provide any insight on how to fix this I'd be very grateful.

I'm running Windows XP Professional with Realtek HD Audio. In my Master Volume mixer when I go to "Options" and then "Properties" Realtek HD Audio Output is selected as the Mixer device and "Playback" is ticked. "Recording" is shaded. When I bring the volume adjusters up there's all the sliders and under each slider is a box marked "Mute". If I change the Mixer device to Realtek HD Audio input "Recording" is ticked and "Playback" is shaded. When I bring up the volume adjusters for recording there's the sliders, each with a box marked "Mute" underneath, except all of the sliders, except "Recording" are shaded out. "CD Volume" "Mic Volume" "Line Volume" and "Stereo Mix" are all shaded.

In Realtek's Mixer those devices don't even HAVE sliders.

Any ideas why I can't adjust my levels?

A:Not Able to Adjust Volume Levels in Mixer.

I'm not following you entirely, but have you tried (R) clicking on the "mute box" selection when it appears? Does the speaker icon in the task bar have a red "X" on it? Have you gone to "system" in the control panel...than selected 'hardware' to get a look at 'device manager' and what see what it's saying? On your sound mixer click on everything that has a red "x" on it. I'm not meaning to oversimplify, but I think you will discover an easy way out of this problem once you know how to handle the Window mixer console.

Please what can i do?

A:Strange Volume Mixer Appearance

I'm familiar with this issue. I've seen it myself, but it didn't bother me enough to get me to try and fix it. Do you have an OEM version of Windows (from HP, Dell, Toshiba, etc.)? I think the bloatware might cause it (I have since reinstalled Vista with a clean version, and don't remember seeing it since).

Another something to try is to end the explorer.exe process from task manager and start it over (File -> New Task (Run...) -> type explorer and press enter).

For some reason, there was sound coming out from both the computer's internal speakers and the headphones that were plugged into it at the time I did this. I tried keeping the 'speakers' volume down all the way in the volume mixer, but this caused all the 'Applications' audio to turn off as well. So I went to its (Speakers) general properties and disabled then applied changes. Now I can't find said Speakers device anywhere in the control panel under 'Hardware and Sound.'

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on an '09 iMac with Boot Camp. I don't know if this directly affects the problem in any way, but just putting that out there.

Thank you.

Svchost.exe virus

I've been on 4chan /g/ and they sent me here.
I'm not to sure on what this is, the application I've narrowed it down to is svchost.exe.
This thing plays sounds, songs, advertisements; kinda like someone is rotating through an AM radio station.

I've tried my best to remove this by myself and with Malware removal. None of those option seem to work. Maybe someone has dealt with this before.

I've used Norton AntiVirus, MalwareBytes, and Microsoft Security Essentials and none of them seem to help or find a problem, my guess is a rootkit

Hi, I've searched around on the net for anyone else that might have this problem, but no luck.

The program is a game called Shores of Hazeron, the sound works fine, apart from the fact it isn't showing up in the volume mixer, and the game doesn't have any volume controls in its in-game settings. Which can be a bit annoying when you have the rumbling of a starship in your ear when you're trying to listen to music.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get this working?

Hey guys! I'm having some small problems with Windows Sound Mixer!
It happens when I'm playing Left 4 Dead. Every time that I win a level, the Sound Mixer lowers the volume of the game. If I'm listening to music in WMP or WMC, it pauses the music and lowers its volume too.
One weird thing, is that the volume the application were keeps marked on the Mixer, but faded, and a other volume marker, not faded, goes down! Then, I've to lower the game, raise the volume levels again, then go back.
In WMP, happens almost the same, but there is none faded volume marker, it just lowers the volume, but the marker stays in the same position!
I know, its kinda creepy, when I play again, I'll post a screenshot here for you guys to see.

I got all my Realtek drivers updated to lastest version, and I'm using Windows 7 x86 build 7100.

Any help will be appretiated!

Beginning last night, I am hearing random ads running in the background with no way of closing them.

Volume mixer lists it as "Name Not Available" and I can mute/lower the volume of the ads so that I don't hear them.

I experienced a random restart once last night which I am assuming is related.
EDIT: just received the error "Windows must now restart because the DCOM Server Process Launcher service terminated unexpectedly" before a forced restart.

I followed the steps and ran dds. I copy/pasted the dds log and attached the attach log.

I've been using this computer- it's an HP Pavilion G series laptop- for about six months now, and have noticed no issues. During that time, I've been using a Logitech ClearChat Comfort headset. I recently broke a pair and today I received a new pair. After using them, I have suddenly encountered a very strange problem. My volume on these headphones continually goes down- by which I mean the volume setting on the headphones, both in the "playback" tab under Sounds in the control panel and in the Windows Mixer, drops continually without my touching it. Dragging the slider up or pressing the "volume up" buttons on my headphones or keyboard causes the volume to rise, but it then falls back down to zero again; the "mute" buttons both on my keyboard and in the windows mixer do not work doing these periods*.

I have already tried the suggested solutions on other fora- I have already set my "communications" setting to "Do nothing", I don't have RealTek audio manager, and I have already tried rebooting.

I must note that this problem did not pop up until about eight hours after I first plugged in the headset; during that time, I watched a number of YouTube videos and made a video call without any incident. Furthermore, I have used this brand of headphone for several months without ever having a problem. However, it does seem to be connected, as I cannot reproduce the issue without having the headphones plugged in, whereas it has ... Read more

I have an audio source connected to Line In and I use the volume mixer to un-mute the input when I want to listen to the audio from that source. I recently started having a problem where after re-booting Line In does not show up in my volume mixer and I do not hear audio from the Line In Source even though I have listen to this device active. (during boot up I do hear the audio for a fraction of a second)
To get Line In to work and show up in the volume mixer again, I have to go to manage audio devices under control panel and select the record tab. from there I can see Line In and I see that it is set as the default device and I can see that there is audio based on the indicator bars to the right of Line In. I then have to go to the Listen tab for Line In and uncheck "Listen to this device" and click on Apply, then Check "Listen to this device" and Click Apply. After doing all of this the Audio can be heard and Line In appears on the Volume Mixer until the next reboot where I have to perform those steps all over again.

I have the latest drivers and all MS updates for Windows 8.1 on a Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD5H Motherboard with Realtek R3.87 Driver dated 5/13/2014

What could be causing this ?

A:Line In is missing from Volume mixer after reboot

Have you tried setting the System Mixer as the default recording device? Then whatever is input will be heard. You also need the System Mixer to record audio from the internet.

I'm sure this has been dealt with, but I had my realtek HD installed perfectly fine and I deleted tunebite because I don't use it anymore and what do you know, my sound claims to be installed but when I open volume mixer it says no audio is detected. Does this mean I should try an OS reinstall? I tried three different realtek drivers and none have solved the problem.

Uninstall the drivers via the Control Panel..totally get rid of them. Reboot and then install the latest drivers from the Realtek site. Reboot. Goes without saying that you will need the 64 bit drivers, of course.

I am running a game (3d movie maker) and the Volume mixer has set the sound right down to 0.
So I put the volume back up, but as soon as I click back to the game, the volume goes right back down again.
I've read similar problems, but this isn't related to running multiple applications. This only happens with this one game. And this problem happened randomly, after I put the volume down myself. After that one occasion I haven't been able to fix it.
Communications setting is set to "do nothing" and I have played with options allowing applications exclusive control of volume mixer.
Any ideas please?

A:Volume mixer - no audio device is installed

no so confident about this answer, just a wild guess, but have you tried going into the BIOS and checking the sound card is enabled.

When the computer turns on look out for a message that says something like press <DEL> <F12> <F11> to enter BIOS/SETUP

When your in there use the arrow keys / tab button to navigate and look for something that says AC97 or onboard sound, or anything that hints at sound and check its turned on.

Other than that, as strange as this sounds, try plugging in some headphones into your machine and seeing if it says the audio device is available (newer windows/drivers can detect if speakers are plugged in, it may be this that is faulty, this may find it out)

Another option to consider is to download Ubuntu (linux) just google it, and burn it to CD/DVD. You can use it to load up linux onto your computer (it runs off the CD, it doesnt touch your files)

Ubuntu will automatically install sound drivers when it loads, see if you can make it make a sound, if so you know its windows thats wrong. It might be worth reinstalling windows or A final alternative is start the computer in safe mode (hold f8 just before the Start Windows screen shows, if in doubt, turn the computer on and just hold it) when in safe mode go into Start > Right Click Computer > Properties > Device Manager and then delete all references to your soundcard, restart and reinstall your soundcard.

Odd one this - googled it and didn't find much. I just noticed that when i open the volume mixer, it'll initially come up with some or all of the running apps using audio, but if i close it and then reopen again, one or more of them has vanished. This seems to be erratic rather than following any pattern. Any ideas? Like i said it's not something i've come across before. I reinstalled audio drivers, didn't help.

applications take exclusive control of your audio even if theres no sound in there, you will get a slider for all programs that are open, its quite handy when you install a game with annoying music they insist on playing while installing, you can use the sliders to turn the volume down, if there are sliders disappearing, that usually means you have programs that are opening and closing in the background, spyware scans or something similar, i shouldnt worry too much about it.

So I have a strange issue where software will perform fine without any issues; the sound works fine and there's no issues whatsoever with that. However when I look at my Volume Mixer, it shows the program as normal but no activity in sound. So when sound is actually playing, the green meter doesn't react. This has also made sound impossible to stream or record (such as when trying to screen record a game with Fraps for example because it can't detect the sound). I've made sure the sound card I'm using is set to default and all others are disabled (such as the onboard one) and that everything is setup properly (otherwise I wouldn't be able to hear it!)

Sound card is an ASUS Xonar DX and I'm running Windows 8.1 (I couldn't sign up to Eight Forums for some reason, just kept redirecting me to the login page). Any help is appreciated!

A:Sound works, but not 'reacting' in Volume Mixer?

Managed to fix this. It was an issue in Xonar's DX Audio Center. I disabled GX which fixed it. Apparently GX is some sort of game sound enhancer? Which ironically didn't enhance anything Either way hope this helps anyone who has the same issue!
