If you already have Kaspersky, VoodooShield, HitmanPro.alert and as a bonus Sandboxie, then I would recommend saving your money and not buying a Zemana license, unless of course you wouldn't mind buying a license for a different machine.

To me, what you have seems to be plenty...

Of course, this is my opinion.

WARNING

As I've test the incompatibilities, patches, and scripts on my virtual machine, I have made tweaks to this configuration both concerning system and settings. The tweaks I've made to this system are critical and will cause system instability if not configure automatically. In addition to that, I've made custom scripts made with AutoHotkey to optimize the compatibility of some of my security software. These scripts are unique to each software and are converted to an executable. If you wish to copy my configuration, PM me or do extensive research as the scripts and settings that I made for my configuration are critical to compatibility and optimization.

Cool ... The permutations for a good "free"security config are almost endless IMO..
I see less reason for a config "not" to be free.

Personally,I would recommend..(as you say that your friend is not too tech-savvy)...
1) Free Isolation - Sandboxie
2) Free Anti-Exe - Voodoo Shield
3) Free AV - Avast, AVG, Avira (and/or Crystal Security)
...Plus (as you said) uBlock Origin

I wanted to post something for New or Novice members that can help them better understand PC security.
We have some top notch members who really know their stuff, but some of that, if a user has not been exposed to it can seem a bit overwhelming and confusing. So here is a video from Nova on security basics.
I found this one hosted on a Mozilla Site and wanted to share this with the Novice members who may benefit from it. Enjoy.
I will add more here as I find them. Thanks

Hello Boni:
I was following the instructions on the forum from the member named "Broni"; posted June 26, 2013 for  the Toshia HDD/SSD alert information error message. Upon downloading the tool "Security Check" tool, something very strange happened; I dowloaded the Security check, but, when I clicked the "SAVE" button, the tool just started all by it's self in the command prompt; it also opened notepad with some kind of results; all--- by it's self. I Was unable to save the tool to the desktop, or, make sure the the boxes that were indicated to be check, were "indeed" checked off because, "I never saw the tool".
I opened a new window in notepad over the results that opened, and started to write the forum about the command prompt issue; I was about to copy and paste the results to the new page that I was writing for the forum, but, the document had disapeared. I went to the documents library, to see if the "results" document was there and simply "untitled"; so, I saved the new page, clicked on "Save as", and labled it as "Boni"; I went back to the documents page to see if the "Boni" page was saved; It was alo missing. I then came back to the forum, and downloaded the tool again, this time, it showed up as a download in the download area with no choice to "Save as" for the desktop; also, there is no download (1) in the download area, only the second one I just downloaded. I forgot to save it to the "Desktop".
Can you tell me what I missed? what happened in the first downloa... Read more

I thought of a method that circumvents a virus infected pc from keeping us from attacking the virus/spyware and get rid of it once and for all, at least until the next exploit threatens our every day computer world.

The method is using the infected account to make a existing user account have admin privileges and then signing off. Then go into other existing account now with admin rights and simply use it to post the necessary logs and scripts that are needed to help the forum troubleshooters figure out what is going on with the PC.

I am in the process with guided help from my brother an IT Specialist to remove those buggy trojans and adware agents from the PC.

There are quite a few that came up the main ones were Genetik trojan, Prcview, BHO LRUODUW, these are what prevented no .exe files or scripts to run in IE or FF browers. Also, the desktop was locked down tight with these bugs preventing every move.

I asked my brother to bring a heavy dose of anti-virus cd from his work I believe it was a corporate NOD32 which really laid it on thick against the infestation that was gong on in the hdd. As he was working on it I researched some of the names and found out that the genetik trojan changes thru steps to make it reach its goal of complete control of the PC thru a backdoor exploit controlled by the hacker via his linux/mac based computer.

The lesson to be learned here is to always stay one step ahead of them by keeping antivirus, antispyware , an... Read more

I've just installed the latest Avira Free edition but it's broken my computer.

After installing, things seemed to be working ok. After restarting to complete the installation Vista started ok but a few error messages appeared regarding certain applications not being able to start, Steam for example. Unfortunately I didn't make a note of these errors as I thought it might be a permissions issue I could fix when startup finished.

I noticed Windows Security was still showing as not fully protected so I opened the Avira console which advised me to check for updates, therefore I clicked the button to do so. However I noticed it didn't appear to be responding. So, I thought another restart would solve it. Big mistake.

PC seems to be caught in a restart loop. From that initial restart onwards, it gets past the green progress bar to start Vista then just hangs on a black screen for a couple of minutes before eventually restarting itself. I've tried interrupting to start in safe mode and the issue remains identical. I've also powered off entirely, left for a minute, then powered up again but it makes no difference. Help!

UPDATE: whilst typing this I tried another cold start having left it for a few minutes and I got the option to restart with last working configuration and it seems to be up and running to desktop, although I'm reluctant do do anything else yet. Any advice? Should I try uninstalling Avira and reinstall?

A:Avira Free updated, Vista no longer starts! Help!

Uninstall avira and just see if your computer runs fine. If not something else is causing the problem.

I just bought a Toshiba notebook with XP home edition installed. I am using it as a wireless notebook with a LinKsys router. Everything works fine except for the Config Free program which came installed on the Toshiba. I have wireless access to the internet without any problem. I have called Toshiba support three times so far but they can't seem to be of any help.
When I turn on the Config Free program, I get an error message that my wireless communication switch is not turned on even though it is turned on. The program starts fine, the blue radar screen loads but I cannot see any networks on it and it tells me that the wireless lan is (disable)...sic.
The program worked perfectly for two days at the beginning but has not worked since. I keep getting an error message.
If anyone has any suggestions to why it tells me that my switch is off and ways to fix it, I would really appreciate it.

A:Securalive free vs 360 Total Security vs Panda Free

360 Total Security Essentials is all that is needed. With Avira and Bitdefender engines enabled, RAM usage is high... but only when interface is open or scanning. It will only be a real problem if user always has interface open.

Protection far outweighs the RAM usage. Plus, 360 Essentials is very user friendly.

I'm in a bit of a bind, and any help would be more than appreciated.

Some number of weeks ago, my computer became infected with something (I was never able to figure out exactly what the issue/virus/malware etc. wars). As a result, I was unable to use Google Chrome (my default browser) or Internet Explorer 7, so I reverted back to Mozilla Firefox. This was more of an inconvenience than a problem, as some programs didn't run perfectly anymore (e.g. I couldn't acces my hotmail inbox directly from MSN anymore), and if I clicked IE 7 accidentally, it would take a VERY long time to close.

Anyways, a few days ago my computer became infect with malware, and I have not been able to run anything because the fake antivirus program AV Security Suite will not allow me to. Originally, I couldn't not run anything, but then, without any reason, I was able to run Firefox again. I went to this site
<http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-av-security-suite.html> and downloaded the Spyware Doctor, which AV Security Suite would not allow to run. So I installed it by booting my computer in Safe Mode with Networking. However, when I was finished, I was told that the Spyware Doctor needed updates to run, so I selected the option to download updates. However, I was unable to download them and the program closed, I'm assuming because of the aforementioned internet issue: my computer has trouble doing rudimentary things because it does can't run through IE anymore, becau... I keep a casual security config. I don't keep a bullet proof security setup because it is cumbersome.
Also my device is slow and weak which further discourages anything elaborate.
After reading other configs, I decided to get a strong AV ie Kaspersky, changed my dns to Norton, maxed my Adguard settings and do monthly scans.

A:RVS Security Config

If you have a slow device than kaspersky should not be your security program of choice. It runs heavy! Especially if you have a laptop ; it sucks the lifeblood out of your battery. You would be better of with win defender , emsisoft anti malware or eset. Ad kb ssl enforcer to your browser as an extra security meassure. Also think about getting a backup program like aomei backupper standard , better safe than sorry Thanks for sharing your config!

Hi !

My current box:

HP netbook Atom N450, 2GB RAM, 1 TB HD.

Running a customized Windows NT 5.1 (XPSP3) patched with POSReady updates until EOL in mai 2019.

I only run my OS in stateless ramdisk mode for performance, security and privacy reasons.

Just started using security and antimalware software.

I used an unpatched XP with NO Firewall and NO antivirus for several months and I never got infected as far as I know. (The C drive gets flushed after reboot so it's hard to tell)
For a long time I exclusively used brain + ramdisk to stay out of trouble and I has worked like a charm.

At the moment I am busy hardening my OS to stay safe in the future.

Using my "obsolete" Windows XP daily for online payments and banking without any fear...

Very good config.

A few notes and additions:
You might want to add a firewall application, since Avast Free Antivirus does not include any network firewall or HIPS (behavior blocker) components. These components are an essential extra layer of security.
For these tasks, I would personally recommend COMODO Firewall (free) which contains three powerful security modules:
1. Network Firewall (allows you to control connections coming in or going out of your computer).
2. HIPS ("Host Intrusion Prevention System" checks any file for suspicious behavior and allows you to create rules for how that file should run and what it can do on your computer).
3. Sandbox (virtual environment for isolating unrecognized or potentially malicious applications, so that they cannot harm your actual system or files).
COMODO Firewall is an extremely powerful application, and with a little bit of configuration it can become a very effective security layer. In case you run into any trouble configuring COMODO Firewall, there are many COMODO users here on MalwareTips who are all eager to help.
If you see that you do not like COMODO Firewall, you may use Sandboxie as a virtual sandbox application for isolating suspicious files and running applications (e.g. browsers) securely in an isolated and protected environment, without having to worry that any malicious files may harm your computer. (note that Sandboxie ... Read more

I've got a Toshiba Satellite M115-S3094 that came with XP MCE 2005 although now System Properties tells me I'm running XP MCE 2002 SP3. I'm running Security Essentials and WinPatrol Pro resident and scan frequently with MBAM and SAS. Although I have a paid up subscription of Avast Internet Security's latest version, I'm not using it on the latest factory setting reinstall (reformatting of my hard drive for around the 30th time) and update because the sandbox thing had corrupted my sound drivers. I have CCleaner and Defraggler (replacing Windows Defragmenter) and I also run them regularly.I've had to reinstall factory setting enough times to know that it changes from MCE 2005 to 2002 somewhere between factory settings and fully updated SP3 (think it happens in the SP3 install). As we all know XP MCE is MS illegitimate child and they don't want to support the kid. It seems to be the baby they wish they didn't make but I'm stuck with it on this laptop. One reason I think I might be infected is because I'm getting the following two notifications from crypt in the Event Viewer:1)Event Type: InformationEvent Source: crypt32Event Category: NoneEvent ID: 7Date: 9/25/2011Time: 10:41:10 PMUser: N/AComputer: TOSHIBA-USERDescription:Successful auto update retrieval of third-party root list sequence number from: <http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authrootseq.txt>For more information, see Help ... I would recommend Emsisoft AntiMalware for an on demand scanner. And you don't have to put a link to extensions people will be able to find it and you don't have to put hxxp:// unless if the link directs toward a malicious site which in that case goes into the malware hub.

P.S. People are going to ask what your backup solution is also.

A pretty standard security setup. LTSB is preferred since it takes out all the junk like Cortana, etc. without the need to hack into the ISO with things like Winreducer. Windows has been heavily modified after installation to remove telemetry and other possible attack vectors, such as networking.

Avast takes care of things at the executable level (while also acting as a firewall, software updater, and web filter), Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit takes care of things at the network level, and SpyShelter deals with spyware and acts as a HIPS and sandbox as a final layer.

At the browser level, uBlock Origin blocks the majority of advertising and tracking that lead to malware, Privacy Badger acts as a heuristic blocker, Popup Blocker Pro blocks popups on poorly designed websites, and HTTPS Everywhere defaults to SSL/TLS for website security.

CCleaner (enhanced with CCEnhancer) is used to clean system traces and Bitlocker is used to encrypt the entire OS overall. Recovery keys are stored on a Sandisk Extreme USB drive encrypted in a 7z archive.

I do not have an actual backup system nor an imaging system in place as I mostly rely on System Restore and File History built into the Windows OS, and I have had bad experiences working with Acronis True Image, etc. in the past. Thanks for sharing your config, but you have an anti-all pc, well is not a good idea, if i were you i would use malwarebytes into passive mode /free mode/ uninstall comodo firewall and xvirus as bitdefender total security cover what those programs does. And i would recommend you to uninstall and leave only the necessary extensions, due to the fact that they consume a lot of ram and make the browser more unstable and some time they may crash. in resume just use what you need. is not true the fact that with many antimalware soft you will be protected, it is the opposite.

Comodo and bitdefender are not good friends... having them on at the same time will cause a hole in your firewall... because none of them will be able to work correctly

Add more scanner for on-demand scanner. Zemana AntiMalware, Hitman Pro and Malwarebytes antimalware.

Hitman pro is free for scan system but you need to buy the product if you try to remove viruses too.
Zemana AntiMalware and Malwarebytes antimalware is free for scanning system and remove malwares.

Try CCleaner for Privacy and Optimisation.

thats it from me.. and welcome to MalwareTips
Enjoy

Real-Time Protection:
Emsisoft Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Kaspersky Total SecurityClick to expand...

Seems a bit too much to me even if they works together, the resources consumption is high. EAM is not so necessary when you have KIS and MBAM;

Hello everyone

Can someone has more suggestion to secure my PC at extreme level

A:Vishal's Security Config

@Vishal Kumar Singh

Welcome to MT.

You already have decent security configuration.

At the most extreme for Windows you can harden Windows OS, add Software Restriction Policy and Anti-Executable software, and finally, light virtualization software.

The most extreme would be to migrate to Linux - but I don't think that is what you wish from your post.

Hardening the OS involves researching tweaks and disabling features in W7 that are never used.

Software Restriction Policy software include Blue Ridge Network AppGuard, Excubits Bouncer and NoVirusThanks Smart Object Blocker.

Anti-Executable software includes NoVirusThanks Exe Radar Pro, VooDooShield and Faronics Anti-Executable.

Light virtualization software includes Sandboxie and Shadow Defender.

My signature shows a popular configuration amongst some security soft geeks.

Notice I have no AV suite installed - don't need it.

I don't bother hardening the OS except for a few tweaks - such as disable remote assistance.

I really like your conf., but i think you would do better with Online Armor free that is a powerfull firewall with HIPS defense not provided by your antivirus and very easy to use.

On O&O ShutUp I activated all out of:
- App notifications disabled
- SmartScreen-Filter disabled
- Deferring of Upgrades
- Automatic Windows Updates (1 of 2 and 2 of 2)
- Windows Updates for other products

This functions are still at original.

When I download a file which I don't know or trust, I scan it with HitmanPro, Malwarebytes and Kaspersky.
If it is a big file or software I run it on VirtualBox at first for testing what it does.
If it is a small file I upload and analyse it on virustotal.
Generally I run and test unknown/untrusted files or programs on VirtualBox before running on my "real" system.

I run a full system scan sporadically but minimum once at week. Sometimes daily.
For a full system scan regularly I use HitmanPro, Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, AdwCleaner and JRT by Malwarebytes. Sometimes I download Emsisoft Emergency Kit and let it also scan.

As Router I'm using the ASUS RT-AC87U. It has nice features like VPN-Client, AiProtection by Trend Micro (phishing-website detection & block), Exploit-detection and blocking infected systems in Network. According to ASUS it got a new Firewall Hardware with greatest performance at this moment. It all works very fine. I decided for HideMyAss as VPN-Provider. They got nice & fast servers.

sincerely,

You can remove TuneUP if it ain?t a paid version. Modern OS needs little or no tweaking at all to keep peak performance all day. Why would anyone disable toast notification on w10? Consider doing a backup or atleast backup imp. files to prevent losing in an event of disk failure. I guess you're using multiple HDDs and SSDs in RAID? Am i correct?

Hello,
Here is my security config.

Update: 2/12/2015
Real-time Protection:

ESET Smart Security 9 (potentially unwanted applications: ON; potentially unsafe applications: ON; Removable media scanner: OFF)
HitmanPro Alert 3
NVT EXE Radar Pro (lockdown mode) + (block all process exetuted from external devices)
MCShield 3 (1st layer USB infection prevention)
Privacy:
Added F-Secure Freedome VPN

Browser:
Added Cyberfox and remove Firefox (all browser run inside the Sandboxie)

Other Applications:
Added some "exploitable" applications (reason why I add HMPA)

I do this setup to minimize removable media infection, because my machine works with a lot of removable media file transfer. "Shortcut Viruses" is currently popular malware spreading throgh USB here. The bad thing is, ESET eventually can't detect and remove this virus, MCShield does! So, I disabled ESET's USB scanner and put MCShield to do this job.

One thing, I am a happy clicker on the internet + (Common Sense Internet Security 2016: ON )

May this setup looks overkill? But I dont faced any issues nor system slow down.

If u watrch Youtube a LOT then use an extension called MAGIC ACTIONS FOR YOUTUBE

and also use ccenhancer with Ccleaner to increase the capability.

ADD and ANTI-EXPLOIT(although ESS is okay but to be on safer side)

ALSO i feel only 1 REALTIME AV is required but in Ylour case u r using 2 that'll unnecessarily slow ur system

REST UR SECURITY IS INTACT

regards

Hi
I use ESET NOD32 antivirus for about a year, the subscription'd be over soon. Previously I have used Emsisoft Internet Security, was good also. I am thinking I'll use F-secure SAFE now.
I uninstalled Online Armour Firewall since it's now obsolete and non-supported.
I also have Bitdefender Trafficlight browser extension enabled. Take care.

I would like to suggest for your backup solution Macrium Reflect or Aomei Backupper both have a good free and reliable version.

Also you could add Emsisoft Emergency Kit as a extra on demand scanner.
