Dell XPS 8700, PCASp60, NIDS6 & multiple BSOD crashes per day

Q: Dell XPS 8700, PCASp60, NIDS6 & multiple BSOD crashes per day

Hello ?

Not sure if I am right at this place?

I bought a Dell XPS8700 desktop in late 2014. I started out with Win 8.0 Home. From the very beginning, I had BSOD crashes. I updated to Win 8.1 Home, Win 8.1 Pro and now to Win 10 Pro, hoping that the problem will disappear with a newer OS. However, I still have those crashes (very annoying when working on important documents!). My drivers are up to date and the computer is free of viruses etc.

As far as I have found, this problem might be related to the PCASp60 and/or NIDS6 driver/key. However, there is no PCASp60 driver on my computer (and apparently not needed based on various sources, which I either cannot confirm or not confirm). If I delete one or both keys in the registry, there are still crashes, though. The system error message is always the same:

?The PCASp60 NIDS Protocol Driver services failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.?.

I did some more research and found that these drivers seem to be related to the Realtek PCI onboard LAN unit. But even if I disable the LAN in the BIOS and delete all Realtek drivers in System/MyDevices, the error still exists and my computer crashes.

I am wondering if this is a general problem/unresolvable error of this computer or if it can be resolved..?

I am close to exchanging the motherboard or even switching back to HP computers (which always worked very well for me in the past 15 years).

Thanks in advance for any comments and suggestions!

I am getting random BSODs with a brand new dell XPS 8700. I got my older SSD replaced through RMA assuming that could have been the cause and installed Windows 8 fresh install after getting the new dell. I've been having random BSODs on the computer, it will even happen when I'm not even using the computer and leave it on.

BSOD dump files attached.

? OS - Windows 8 64bit
? What was original installed OS on system? Windows 8 64bit
? Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? Came-preinstalled, but I reinstalled it when installing brand new SSD
? Age of system (hardware) Less than 2 weeks
? Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? Less than 2 weeks

A:Brand New Dell XPS 8700 - Multiple BSODs

I have debugged the dumps and all seem to have the same error, I have done some research about your crashes and have found some possible causes:

1.) Incorrect BIOS Configuration
2.) Faulty RAM Module

The Fixes for these are as follows:
1.) Restore the BIOS Configuration
-OR-
2.) Remove the faulty RAM.

Modifying BIOS/CMOS settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. I cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk. But it may be the only way to fix the BSOD's you are encountering.

If I was in your position I would try restoring the BIOS first, before trying to remove RAM. If you are ensure on how to restore the BIOS please look at this before trying: How can I reset CMOS or BIOS settings?

I wouldn't try the hard reset unless the normal defaults do not work. If neither work then try removing the RAM.

I recently tried upgrading my RAM to the full 32 GB capacity.
When i did this my PC would randomly crash with a power failure - not a BSD - a power failure.
This leads me to believe that either my PSU is failing or my Motherboard is failing. Most likey the PSU IMHO.
So, if i wanted to upgrade the PSU for a future/potential graphics card upgrade what watt PSU can i put in here?

Greetings,
I have had BSOD's for over two weeks.
Sometimes happens while gaming, sometimes while surfing and rarely while watching videos.
Based on whocrashed it says the following, the Razer keyboard has been the problem after applying tutorial settings for Driver Verifier and which had been reset to normal settings.

I have an XPS 8700 desktop all stock bought a little over a year ago. Last night I turned it off when I went to bed. Today I turned it on and it will not go past the first dell loading screen. It freezes and I'm unable to press any buttons (F2, F12 etc) I put it a different hard drive to see if that was the problem but it still continued. HELP PLEASE??

A:Dell XPS 8700 Desktop, Freezes at dell loading screen unable to boot up.

Hi Mattmazz
Thanks for writing to us.
Please disconnect all the connectors and then hold down the power button for 15 secs, now remove the memory modules and put them back one by one and observe for any changes.
If possible please try another set of memory modules. If there is a separate graphics card, remove that as well and try the onboard.

1) Intel Z87 Chipset driver
2) XPS-8700 Chipset driver
3) AMD Radeon 6xxx/7xxx/8xxx/R9 Desktop Graphics Driver

EDIT: Rewritten for clarity
On Realtek ALC3861 Audio Driver (ver. 6.0.1.7525, A00) for Windows 10, there is no longer a button labeled "Show Meters" under Speakers/Headphones > Maxx Audio Pro in the bottom right corner (please see attached screenshot). This button in previous versions of the driver for Windows 7 opened a new window with sliders to balance front and back speakers in a surround sound setup.
What I did:
Updated my OS from 7 to 10 and updated the Realtek audio drivers accordingly - to the above mentioned version.
What I expected:
The "Show Meters" button would be present in the newest Realtek driver.
What really happened:
Upon upgrade to the newest driver, the "Show Meters" button disappeared.

I have reinstalled the newest driver multiple times with no avail and tried the driver from Windows 8.1 and the default driver from Realtek with worse affects (Dell Audio window is missing most elements/drop down options, etc)

If anyone would know how to address the issue, if this is intentional, or who to escalate this to, I would appreciate it.

A:Latest Version of Dell Audio is missing "Show Meters" button. (Windows 10, Dell XPS 8700)

I feel that I should be more observant. In Control Panel > Sound > Playback > Select the Realtek device > Properties > Levels there are the exact changes I need. I don't know why I didn't notice until now. Could explain why there was no "Show Meters" button in this release but I thought Windows 7 also had the same leveling and there was the leveling in Dell Audio as well.
I'm still going with a new sound card from Creative however, seen a super nice $70 one that looks awesome and seems to have features to match.

Hi everyone, I am newbie here. Recently I need to upgrade my ram on XPS8700. And I went to Best Buy and bought a "PNY - 2-Pack 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 DIMM Unbuffered Non-ECC Desktop Memory Kit". It does not work, computer can not power on with flashing orange lights.
So I went to Crucial website, it recommends me to use a DDR3L RAM. I saw all the DDR3Ls are for laptops. Could it be used in my desktop? And my current RAM is Hyundai. Could it be mixed with other brand like Crucial or Kingston?
My pc specs:
i7 4770
GTX 645
8GB RAM
Dell Inc. 0KWVT8 mobo
1TB HHD

A:Dell XPS 8700 RAM upgrade

Laptops first started using DDR3L which is why the market is flooded with it, however you just need to look for the desktop version for your computer.  If you go to crucial they should have an auto test that will detect the correct ram for your machine and give you the list of options you can pick from.

Good day everyone!
This is my first post to the forums, as I am a recent Dell convert - Dell monitors, a tower and speakers all make up my new workstation! One thing I wanted to do to improve performance from the get go was to use a solid state drive as a boot drive as well as some storage for some intensive games (like Flight Simulator) and for work. This is the drive I chose:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-EVO-2-5-Inch-MZ-75E500B/dp/B00OBRE5UE/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1473820312&sr=1-1&keywords=samsung+850+evo+500gb

I did not, however, do as the installation had recommended by connecting it to the USB port with a SATA to USB converter because I had forgotten to buy one, and decided to forego that step and just install it straight in the case, using one of the spare hookups for power for the HDDs and plugging in the SATA cable to the motherboard. The SATA cable I had no issue with, but the cord for the power supply may not be fully plugged in (I heard a click, but the cord is a little short).
I went to go clone the drive with the included Samsung Magician/Data Migration tool and all went well, it only took about 4 minutes to clone the OS (nothing else is installed yet basically). I was hoping that the changes would have turned the SSD into a hard drive/boot drive, but when I turned it back on, the OS was still booting from the old C: drive.
I went inside device manager and the SSD shows, but it's not being recogniz... Read more

A:Dell XPS 8700 not recognizing SSD

My suggestion. shutdown, unplug both power and SATA from your old HDD reboot and see if it works.
Assuming it does, we can sort out next steps to get your HDD setup as a data disk.
What version of Windoze? What BIOS version. It don't think either matter but it might help to answer the questions.

What are the possible cpu coolers that you can install on the mobo dell xps 8700 motherboard without any fancy ghetto mounting. Just as if it was a normal motherboard?

A:CPU COOLER DELL XPS 8700

The XPS 8500, the precursor to the XPS 8700, has standard Socket 1155 spacing. Socket 1150 shares the spacing of the 1155, and thus I believe an aftermarket cooler should work.
A Cooler Master Vortex was a perfect fit on my XPS 8500 motherboard, and I assume the same would hold true for an XPS 8700. You will use optical drive-type screws to fasten the cooler to the board rather than the flimsy plastic push-pins.
Looking at an XPS 8700 mainboard on eBay, I can see a standard four-pin CPU fan header, just like that of the XPS 8500.

I'm considering installing an SSD on my desktop computer, and have read several places I need to set my BIOS to AHCI mode. I have no such mode listed in my BIOS. The only 2 options listed are LEGACY and UEFI. Is Legacy just Dell's description for AHCI? Can I just install using LEGACY? I can't seem to get any answers from the Dell forums. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit OS. I think the bios version is 8. If I use the LEGACY mode, will Trim still work? This will be a clone, not a fresh Windows install.
Thanks.

Hello SevenForums users,

Recently, I updated two of my hardware which was my processor and hard disk.

My old Processor was: Intel Core 2 Dual 3.00 GHz.
My new processor is: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.50 GHz.

The hard drive which I updated was just an addon, I added 1TB hard drive along side with my 300GB one.

I've attached everything that was told.

I honestly don't know what it is, I've just done a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate, and i keep getting BSOD. I've never had a BSOD until I changed the processor.

Code:
Is Windows 7 . . .
- x86 (32-bit)
- Nope, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate just today.
- a Full Retail

- What is the age of system (hardware): I honestly don't know, I bought this computer let me guess July, 2010. All the hardware was brand new.
- What is the age of OS installation: I installed the OS today.

Hi -

I have a self-built PC (system details below) which has been crashing regularly. I ran the Driver Verifier, following the instructions to check-box all non-Microsoft drivers: the PC BSOD'd. Then in order to send in the Kernal dump with the system report I downloaded the SysInternals AutoRuns file and the BSOD File Collection App and ran the latter: the PC BSOD's in the middle of it, but still it produced the output folder Windows7_Vista_jcgriff2 which is appended. When I ran the perfmon /report file the PC BSOD'd again before I could save the file.

When I came to look in the C;\Windows|Minidump folder I expected to find a series of Kernal dump files but there was only the one, so I don't suppose this one (which is attached) contains the dump from the Driver Verifier run.

Could you take a look at what I've sent and let me know if there are any useful clues here? Thanks for any help - this is becoming a major problem for me!

To add to my previous posting, I ran the recommended memtest86 on my 4Gb of RAM and there were no problems.

I also re-ran the Driver Verifier utility and, as before, it BSOD'd. Unlike the last time I was able to retrieve the crash minidump file - in fact there were two of them so I am attaching both as I'm not sure which is the relevant one (i.e. I don't know why there are two: I was expecting one only. They are both dated within minutes of each other).

Once again any help would be very gratefully received

I have managed to find out what causes these bsod by using "Bluescreenveiwer" but that's as far as my computer knowledge goes,
I need help to understand what all the information means, is there anyone who can teach an old dog new tricks? I would be very grateful, I have also noticed that (for some reason) that my firewall will not load

I think it's first off mentioning I'm not a computer whiz so if I ask what something is that is the reason But the error I have been encountering is multiple BSOD crashes over the past 2 weeks, I've owned my computer for about 1 and a half years. I took it to my friends recently to show him it in action and in true fashion it didn't actually do it, the only difference in set up being I used a HDMI cable to connect to a different monitor but I don't think this could be the culprit, could it?

The BSOD comes up with the following messages in the past:
dxgmms1.sys
BAD_POOL_CALLER (The most common one without a doubt)
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I understand this isn't much to go on so if you need any information to help you try and solve this issue it would be much appreciated.

Hi! After trying for a long time to install the Windows XP Professional x64 Edition with Service Pack 2, I finally got the installation to complete successfully. I was able to do this by "slipstreaming" the AHCI drivers into the XP installation directory and using nLite and burn the ISO to a CD. The installation completed fine with no issues. But now when I try to boot the computer for the first time I am getting the dreaded BSOD message quickly flash and then the computer restarts:

Hi teacherdan,
It seems that the wireless and chipset drivers are missing. Click on this link http://dell.to/11iojrK -> type the service tag of the computer -> choose the operating system -> expand Chipset, download all the options listed. Then expand Network, download and install either Dell DW1703 or Intel 6235 WIFI driver.
Hope this helps.

Since I upgraded to W10, the Audio Service and internet connection both keep crashing. Randomly.

My computer is the only one hard-wired to the router. We have others and none loses their signal. I made sure to try wi-fi on and off, no difference. Tried a different cable.

The Audio service crashing is much more annoying. It happens every 15 minutes. Everytime, I can restart the service like if nothing happened.

I tried to update drivers, disable / uninstall every listing in the Audio controllers (device manager). I have NVIDIA, Realtek and Logitec Webcam 500 High Definition Audio.

Audio service keeps crashing, no matter what.

Aurora R1 is running Windows 7.x
Aurora R3 is running WIndows 7.x
What MS OS can the Aurora R1 support (2560x1440 display, updated GPU)
What MS OS can the Aurora R3 support (2560x1440 display)
Can either move to Windows 8.1.x? Or both?
Can either or both move to Windows 10.x?

A:DELL ALIENWARE AURORA R1, R3, X51, and XPS 8700

First there is a free upgrade from Windows 7 OEM to Windows 10 Retail so there is absolutely zero point in purchasing a Windows 8.1 Retail license...
Windows 10 TH2 is essentially a fixed version of Windows 8.1 where Metro Apps work correctly as "Windows".
Almost any system shipped with Windows 7 can run Windows 10. As they are 2009 and 2011 models respectively Dell did not provide updated drivers for Windows 8.x or Windows 10 because they are all out of warranty. All the drivers should be inbuilt into Windows 10 TH2 or automatically obtained via Windows Update. Its advised to update your BIOS to the latest revision before proceeding.
A Clean Installation also in general performs better. See here for details:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-windows-10-oem-and-retail-iso/
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1RkaknDn7v-Ucth4gt0U3BHVSY7oNkWr
Both systems likely have a legacy (non-UEFI) BIOS so take that into account when making the Bootable USB. Although you may want to look at the BIOS settings for the 2011 model to see if there is UEFI support.

Hi everyone,

I've had a look at some of the forums which seemed to have the same problem as me (perhaps for different/same reasons). Since updating the BIOS manually 3 weeks ago, I've been having multiple BSOD and each time the reason appears to be different. However, there are only 4 recorded BSOD in minidumps (I've had a lot more than that... but I don't know where it's gone).

Any help would be appreciated. I have attached the requested file.

Thank you,

I have had a long history of issues with this PC, involving a mixture of Crashes (like cable being pulled out full black screen), freezes (unresponsive and audio plays on loop), and BSOD's. I fixed the first set of issues by moving my RAM onto a different channel, and since then issues came and went, usually lasting a month or two and then it being stable with no issues for a few months and then something else would come back.
I had a few issues that were fixed about a month back, so I decided to upgrade to windows 10, Within a day I got a freeze, and since then I have had one BSOD one Crash and 5 or more Freezes. I have tried updating all the drivers I could think of, and tried checking event viewer to no affect.
Regarding the BSOD I know which driver caused it and believe it isn't an issue any more, its mainly the freezes I would like to fix. I have stress tested my hardware a lot and I never encounter any errors with it, however if recommended I will happily test again.
So does anyone have any ideas on how to start tackling these problems, and hopefully coming to a permanent fix?
Thanks for your time

PS I know this isnt really about BSOD, but I didnt know if here was the right place to post it

Hello all,

I've never used a forum for any computer problems and I'm somewhat of a newb but I should be able to help you help myself.

I have a Toshiba Satellite that's a few years old.

I'm getting random BSODs and they aren't on the screen long enough for me to write anything down...sadly.  Other times, the laptop will simply lock-up and I'll need to hold the power button down to do a hard restart.  Sometimes the screen will turn into an amazing mess of pixelated insanity, usually the laptop will restart itself after those ones.  This is especially awesome because I use the computer for school and it's enraging to have it lock up and lose work.  I'm constantly saving little pieces of word documents just to stay a step ahead of the BSODs, it's simultaneously sad and comical.

I downloaded Speccy and MiniToolBox as I've seen others use them to help you.

Let me know how I should proceed and any questions you may have.

Thank you!

While doing seemingly resource light tasks such as watching a youtube video or listening to soundcloud, I would get BSOD. There are several different ones like the Watch dog one, pfn list corrupt, IRLQ not less or equal, system service exception and a memory dump.

I just did a fresh install of Windows 8 since I thought 8.1 was causing the issue. It started up around the time I upgraded to it and has gotten progressively worse.

Using an AMD HD7870 with the current non beta drivers. It caused it with the beta driver as well.

I checked all the RAM (4 sticks of 4) and they all worked individually.

What should my next step be?

Thanks!

(I had a previous post with slightly different issues some of which have now returned.)

Regardless,
I'm having allot of trouble with BSODs and random crashes as of late. If I leave my computer on constantly it will maybe crash once a week. However, if I turn it off for a few hours it crashes and Blue Screens up to 12 times for the first hour after I turn it back on. It then resumes relatively normal operation. I have observed many errors in event viewer and found and updated a problem driver through verifier. Verifier doesn't find any problems with non Microsoft drivers after 20 mins or so. If I verify all including Microsoft it crashes without mentioning a driver error (I didn't bother to check if that is a symptom of hassling Windows drivers.) I have been lead to believe that the pagefile or memory are causing my problems to an extent. However after much testing I can find no faults. I'm stuck at this point and any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm losing files and programs that are open to corruption or deletion when the crashes occur.

I can upload DxDiag for more info on the computer if necessary. Any sort of gaming seems to increase the likelihood of crashes. However avoiding games does nothing for prevention.

These blue screens seem to happen when I am using the PC for watching videos to gaming. Everything in my computer is relatively new except for the Motherboard and Processor. I have reformat Windows to try and fix this issue, but it has re-occurred.

I started this thread last week.

http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...-ultimate.html

Since then I have tried multiple things to fix my Blue Screen problems, none of them have worked and I am still receiving blue screens. I am starting to think I have defective hardware in this machine.

Since last week, I completely recovered my laptop to factory out of the box using Samsung Recovery. This brought my machine back to Windows 7 Home Premium. From there I used anytime upgrade to goto Windows 7 Professional x64. I ran all of the updates and installed Office 2007, no BSOD so far. I started to install Autocad 2011, during the installation I received a BSOD. Since then I have received one more BSOD while Autocad was running. I attached the BSOD Dump & System File Collection app. Thanks any help would be greatly appreciated.

AutoCad 2011 may be the reason why you have BSOD. I would recommend that you contact the makers of the software.

Hi guys.

I had a problem a couple of months ago where after a while, nearly all my games would crash with a recovery issue. I had this resolved and was told numerous times that it was to blame on X, Y, Z programs because they weren't made by Windows.

However, suddenly this afternoon,I was playing warcraft when I hear an IM drop in, then I started getting graphical artefacts and was unable to alt tab, Ctrl/Alt/Delete, or use the windows key to escape. This started happening every time I restarted and tried to play the game, after about a minute. Before the issue I had happily been playing for a few hours, no problems.

Thinking it could possibly be the heat, I got some extra airflow in the room and lowered the temperature, to no avail. I checked for viruses, none. I closed all programs except the game itself, no effect. I lowered the graphical settings, nada. I then updated my graphics drivers to the newest set availble, still no luck.

My game then crashed with a full BSOD (attached, the latest in the file.) - Now when I turned my computer back on, I have graphical artefacts all over my screen, even in safe mode. There are 5 'groups' of lines that run down the screen, distorting everything. When I move my cursor over them they disappear but reappear as soon as the screen refreshes from something like scrolling down a page and such.

I was unable to run the report as requested, it came up with a page saying an unspecified error has occured and a report could not be generated... Read more

Am seeing a problem I haven't seen before. When I put the ATI HD 5770 card in the Dell XPS 8700 and reboot the computer to install the driver, I see a black, blank screen, no video. I know that the system is booting from the sounds, but no video. I've tried using both DVI ports on the back of the card, booting in safe mode, but just not seeing any video.

The only thing that I can think of to try is uninstalling the previous card that's being replaced, Nvidia GT 720, and booting with the new card installed. But I'm not sure that'll help, I just don't understand why I'm not getting basic, legacy video when I reboot the computer with the HD 5770 installed.

Any ideas?

I am thinking about purchasing the STRIX 1080 to upgrade from my STRIX 970. Does the card work with the motherboard that comes with the 8700? Will the card fit (it is 11.73 in)? Will I need a better power supply (I have a 600w PSU installed)? Has anyone tried installing this card into an 8700 before?

Will there be a BIOS upgrade to allow the DELL XPS-8700 to work with the soon to be released nVidia GTX1070 and 1080 cards?

A:DELL XPS-8700 + nVidia GTX10x0 GPUs

If you have the current bios A10 or later yes.  Older systems will require a bios update.
The A10 bios is here and on the XPS 8700 page here.* Download/Save the file to the windows desktop* Before running A10, I would install the prior Bios in order* Disconnect any external hard drives, keys, printer, scanner, etc. You only want the USB mouse, USB keyboard, LAN, monitor connected* Run the executable from Windows* Allow the system to complete the installation and restart automatically. I've installed the gtx 1070 into the dell XPS 8700 and it work. Although it's a large card and some cords have a hard time reaching over the graphics card. Also the standard dell power supply won't work with the card since it needs 8 pins and the dell power supply only has a six pin connecter.

I have the Dell XPS 8700 Desktop with a 2TB drive.  If I will be doing some video editing with Adobe Premiere CC, should I store all my video files on the OS C: drive? Or, should I purchase an additional internal hard drive (i'm thinking a WD Black 7200 4TB drive) to work off of?
thanks!

My PC went into a restore mode on its own after locking up.  It had been updated to Win10, but after the restore it was back to Win7.  Most of my files are there along with MS Ofiice and the related data files.  Missing are my email program (Mozilla) and files and my Quicken and files.  There are a number of locked files that return "access denied" when I try to open the file or directory.  I'm guessing everythign is there, just hidden.  i have not reinstalled Mozilla or Qbooks yet, just in case that buries the files deeper.
Someone suggested i reinstall Win10....MS said they would give me another install for free after the 7/29 deadline, but again, I want to see if I can recover my files.  There is no restore point to go back to since the Dell utility ran.  Any direction will be appreciated.

Easy strait forward upgrade, NO PSU upgrade required, size of the card makes it easy to install, scores better than GTX 980 with less power consumption. Just make sure you clean uninstall the previous card download the driver form Evga for the new one and your done. 10-15 min upgrade.
I don't game so I cant day how well it does but I will be using this for video editing so i will post updates if needed. Here is a bench-test I've done: www.passmark.com/.../display.php

This is going to sound stupid/crazy/dumb/etc...but tonight, for the first time, I noticed a flashing white light on the front panel of my Dell XPS 8700...the light is next to the "Mini/MMC SD/RS/SDXC' slot...doesn't appear to have anything to do with putting an SD in. The light is sporadic, sometimes quickly flashing and then nothing..other times multiple flashes. My computer appears to be working fine.
I have searched all over the Dell site and can't find anything...I know on my laptop I have a flashing light next to the battery light..I have always assumed that is the processing light.
I feel like this something I should know; I just want to make sure that it is a normal thing.

A:What do the flashing lights mean on the front of the Dell XPS 8700?

Hi Troyj1972
Thanks for writing to us.
Do you see a cylindrical icon beside the light, it indicates the hard drive.
Which means there is a continuous access of data on the system which is indicated by the hard drive activity light. Even if you haven open any programs the HD activity will still blink as the windows is using few backend programs , drivers etc.
The system is working normal, nothing to worry about.
Regards

I currently own a Dell 8700 XPS.  I am running Windows 7 Home premium.  It has an i7-4790 and it won't turbo boost.  I have checked the settings to make sure it is enabled.  When I run AIDA64 Extreme, it ramps up to 3.59 but won't push past that.  The temperatures are all good, I believe the highest it gets is 72 degrees C on one core with and average of 68 degrees C for the the processor.  I only run the test for 10 minutes.  I recently updated the bios from the Dell Support page and it is running version A11.
I also downloaded and ran Intel's processor diagnostic and it passed.  Dell's CPU scan didn't detect any errors either.
Any suggestions?

Can we double check your cpu clock measurements?
What are you using to measure core processor speeds?
I suggest HWiNFO64 as it shows per-core clock and current/min/max

I just made a new Complete Factory Restore of my XPS 8700. I used an external WD My Passport drive. I cleaned and reformatted the drive before I started and the creation seems to have been successful.   I wasn't sure how much space it would take so I had this 500GB Passport available. The restore took about 10 GB. MY QUESTION IS : Can I store other folders/files on this drive and it won't mess up the restore function?RegardsJH

As far as I know yes, just keep your backup files/folders in a single folder in the root directory.  The restore program should ignore it since I believe its just a generic script that it runs.

I have two identical Dell XPS 8700 for my kids. They use mainly for steam games.

Both running the Windows 10 AU.

Today on one of them, by son said a message popped up and asked to stop a service and he clicked yes. Then all there was, was a gray screen and mouse pointer. He came and got me. The pointer would move but nothing else responded. So I did a power shut down. On reboot, the machine took around 40 seconds from seeing the dell logo to the sign on screen. This seemed very long. So I rebooted the other machine to see how long it takes, and it was only 3 seconds from the dell logo to the sign on screen.

I do not know if the long boot time has been going on or just started with this issue.

I ran sfc /scannow and it said no issues.

I remember in September 2015 ( a year ago) I had an issue with this machine where on power on, all I would get is the spinning dots at the Dell logo and it would not boot into windows. I even let it sit there for 24 hours and just spinning dots. I even tried new install of windows where the machine would let me install new windows, but after updates, the same thing happened with the spinning dots.

After a tons of troubleshooting, a dell tech recommended pulling the cmos battery. I did that and from then on it booted fine.

So since the long boot time did not seem right, I pulled the cmos battery again. waited 30 seconds, put it back in and booted into bios, change the clock (not sure if I had to but did), and then reboot and n... Read more

What follows is the text of the initial message that I posted at the Dell Desktop Forum regarding this problem:
Running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, Service Pack 1 on a Dell XPS 8700 Special Edition PC.  I am experiencing audio distortion/breakup & dropouts/skips when playing music from the computer through headphones or external speakers.  The problem occurs whether the source is iTunes, Windows Media or the optical drives.  The longer the listening time, the more frequent & severe the errors become.  When listening to ripped copies of the same music through an iPod connected directly to the audio system or headphones, no errors occur.  I have installed an ASUS Xonar U7 external sound card.  This seems to have improved the overall sound but it has not solved the distortion issue.  The relevant drivers appear to be up to date.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.
After a series of exchanges with Chris M, and performing actions suggested by him that included establishing that the Onboard Audio Controller was disabled & removal of the program REALTEK HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO DRIVER, Chris M's latest reply was:
I do not think that this is a computer hardware issue. The fact that both the Realtek and the 3rd party Xonar both have the issue points to the operating system resource allocation has the problem. You need to repost the issue on the Microsoft Operating System board to get their thoughts and opinions.

Before you go getting a new hard drive, I also had this issue. There are two versions of Win 7, one includes drivers and one doesn´t. Try this: go into your device manager and scan down to find your Audio then look to see if there are any big yellow questions marks. These will be missing or out of date drivers. Update or install these drivers then see how you go. Control panel> sound> test. Good luck.

I been having a problem with seemingly random BSODs and crashes (ie where the computer forcibly restarts without generating a dump file). I think the crashes happens more frequently when surfing the Internet, especially while watching Youtube videos, but that might be a wrongful perception on my part.

Lately I've been having some issues with my laptop. While hibernating sometimes, I get a BSOD after 5-8 minutes during the blacked out hibernation screen indicating a river Power State Failure. Other times I get a random BSOD while I'm browsing online with at least 10+ tabs open and running Steam and UTorrent in the background, getting a IRQL not_less_or_equal BSOD. These have happened multiple times and I am not sure how to fix these issues.

I am not very smart with computers and I don't really know much about them, so if anyone requires any info please kindly tell me how to give you that info. My desktop is running windows XP professional and is pretty old. Lately for a while now, my computer tends to crash suddenly a couple minutes after starting up. Sometimes it crashes after 5 to 10 minutes, and then when I turn on the computer, it will just stand at a black screen and I am have to force shutdown by holding the power button. The crashes sometimes give me a BSOD, but the BSOD's are different almost every time. I may get Page_fault_in_Non_Paged_area, Irql_not_less_or_equal, driver_Irql_not_less_or_equal, and sometimes it may show some .sys files such as atapi.sys and etc. And sometimes it decides to crash during the startup. Also, after my computer crashes...lets say.... 7~15 times, it will then stop and I can use the computer normally.

My Computer started experiencing BSOD every once in a while about 3 weeks ago, and it has progressively gotten worse, to the point where it is crashing/restarting 10+ times in a day. I have not made any hardware or software changes during this time. The most recent BSOD?s error gave: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and PAGE FAULT IN NON-PAGE AREA. I recorded a few of the file names given as causing the BSOD: ntoskrnl.sys, win32k.sys, dxgmms1.sys.
I have attached the BSOD Dump & System Files. Please let me know if you need any additional information.

These are all over the map. Some hardware some soft. If I we you I would remove Norton AT LEAST TO TEST. It can be responsible for these kinds of crashes. After its replacement we can investigate further.

Symantec is a frequent cause of BSOD's. I would remove and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials AT LEAST TO TEST

Recently I've been having more and more problems with my PC. It's quite an old system and I'm wondering if more than one thing is dying.

I've been having BSOD more and more frequently along with total crashes and freezes. It's been getting slower and slower and is pretty much unusable for the first 5-10 minutes after starting up, it's just unresposive and I can hear the hard drive "grinding" away like a maniac.

I've also noticed some of the capacitors on the motherboard almost seem like they've burst and are partially crusted over with some dark solid gunk.

On startup/reboot I very often get one or more of these:

Disk read error. Press ctrl alt del to restart
Unable to start operating system
Just black, empty screen with the CPU fan on full speed
One long error beep
Repeated short error beeps
Repeated long error beeps

I'm pretty sure that the processor, motherboard and HDD are all more-or-less dead.

Memory = 8 Gig

My story so far
Computer was bought from Cyberpower and has a 3 year service warranty, they are lackluster about getting back to me or knowing what to do.

1 - In late April early May just over 30 days got several BSOD. Windows Seven Forum after much looking believed it was a memory or motherboard issue. Computer shipped back to Cyberpower. Returned with a new processor, but the same memory and board.

2 - Computer crashed in August/September and after another round of Windows Seven Forum looking, it seemed to be memory again. Cyberpower took back all memory sticks and sent new ones. Eventually.

3 - Computer installed with new memory. Crashed on startup and has similar issues as it has always had. Coming to Windows Seven just in case there is any obvious software or hardware driver issues while Cyberpower takes its time dealing with me.

Will uses Memtest86 shortly. If it fails and goes all red on me (which I'm sure it will) is there any way this could not be a memory/motherboard issue?

Good luck with this cursed machine.

Hi,

First of all, english is not my native language (I'm from Argentina, land of great soccer players and the worst politicians), so you'll have to excuse my english.

Here's my problem: I have a desktop PC that I built 5 years ago. It's a little bit old, but works fine for me. I use it to surf the web, watch Netflix and movies with Kodi and some work (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Nothing that needs serious processing.

I have an AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.20 GHz processor with an array of 4 Kingston HyperX 2 GB 800MHz DDR2, totalizing 8GB of RAM memory. The graphic card is EVGA GeForce GT 430.

I was using Windows 7 64-bits Ultimate and all worked fine. There were some crashes, but I think they average 5 o 6 times a year.

Few months ago I updated into Windows 10 Pro 64-bits. And the problems started. The crashes started to occur more frequently, and with the last major update, they always occur everytime I watch a few seconds of any kind of video (streamed, an MP4 or a MKV in my PC, autoplay in Facebook newsfeed, etc). What happens? The screem goes dark and my monitor led indicator start flashing, as it does when PC goes to sleep. Hi,

My Toshiba laptop, running Windows 8.1, started having the BSOD screens a couple of days ago. I searched online for solutions and have tried very many attempts to fix it but I keep getting the BSOD.

I have had several BSOD error's "Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area (win32k.sys)", "System_service_exception", "Resource_not_owned". These are some of the ones I have noted.

- I refreshed my Windows OS, reinstalled it, attempted diagnosing and repair. All these came back with no fault but when I log in and open a file or launch a web browser I still get the BSOD.
- I run "sfc.exe /scannow" and "sfc /scannow" and it all came back with no fault.
- I run a memtest and no faults were found.
- Updated all the windows update, recomended and optional, but still have the BSOD crashes
- Updated all the drivers I could find from Microsoft and Toshiba, Installed Toshiba diagnostics and Hardware setup and it all comes back with no errors. Deleted and installed the display drivers several times as it seems to be a recurring issue on most online forums.
- I have logged in 'safe mode' and run tests but still no result.
- Run multiple chkdsk /f /r and it has found no errors

Any help will be highly appreciated. Dmp files below

A:BSOD Windows 8.1 crashes multiple errors

Hi Liadavide, welcome to the TSG Forums....

You wrote... ".... - I run a memtest and no faults were found..... "

What program did you use to run the Memory (RAM) Test..?

The error "Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area (win32k.sys)" is most often associated with a problem with RAM or a bad cluster on the HDD that might impact on the Page File. As you have run chkdsk several times and not detected any issues the next most likely place to look is the RAM.

Well I've just about had enough of all these BSOD's. I'm currently using a computer I put together about 3 years ago and slowly adding new hardware to. I've been having BSODs the entire time, at least twice per day with different error codes each time. At first I thought it was a RAM hardware issue because I traded my RAM (assumed faulty) with my neighbor to see if he would get blue screens while using it like I do. We traded for about 6 months, neither he nor I got any BSOD while using each other's RAM. I have 6GB Corsair Dominator @1600 MHz and he had some generic (can't remember) 6GB @ 1366MHz. Like I said, we switched and had no problems. So then I got my RAM back and instinctively ran it through memtest86 over night and to my surprise it posted back all runs successful with 0 errors... So I tested each stick individually over night, getting the same results. I've thrown out the bad stick of RAM idea, but I'm still skeptical because of the success I had with my neighbors RAM in my machine. I've held off replacing the RAM as it was 200$ when I bought it 3 years ago, though I assume the stuff is a fraction of that now.

After 3 years I'm finally fed up and enough is enough. I've tried to analyze these myself but I just can't make sense of them and would appreciate 7forum's expertise. I purchased Windows 7 OEM and installed it myself. First time installing it my computer crashed halfway through(first time computer was ever used), so I installed it again successfully the seco... You have a high end CPU and 8GB of RAM. You should NOT be having slowness issues, tbh.

Have you checked that the HSF is free if dirt dust and debris? Have you checked the CPU temps while under load?

Open msconfig and post everything under the STARTUP tab.

Six months ago, I installed Windows 10 from an update.  My computer had been using the 8.1 operating system.  For some reason, everything went haywire a couple of weeks ago, and I went to recovery and reset the computer to default factory settings.  It took quite a while for this to complete.

However, after I did this, I had several updates that had to be completed, and I did this.  Then the Windows 10 update logo appeared on the bottom of my screen, and I tried to update to Windows 10 from 8.1.

I am unable to do this now.  I get an error message that "We couldn't update the system reserved partitions."

When I contacted Windows Support, they said that sometimes after updating to Windows 10 and then refreshing, the next update wouldn't work well.

What can I do to get Windows 10 back on my computer.  I am so used to it, and I really like it.  I am old and cannot do really difficult tasks, but I can do some.

Thanks. for your help.

Dunno if there is a way to upload the BSOD mini-dumps; but ideally someone could make sense of them.. and help me solve my problem. If, in the process, i learned how to read the min-dumps myself, I could help the next person who has a similar problem.

Thank you,

Hi

i have been experiencing multiple BSOD crashes for the last couple of days.

The first few resulted in a completely black screen with just the mouse pointer. I managed to boot from a recovery disk and deleted Eusing reg cleaner and Rapport End Point.
This helped and i can now start up in safe mode and normal mode.
However still getting error messages in windows and BSOD crashes.

It took me ages to download Malware bytes as the installation kept crashing. Eventually installed it but it then BSOD half way through the scan.
Super Anti spyware shows no infections.
Also have McAfee installed but that keeps crashing too!

The system seems more stable in safe mode & clean boot, but not always.

Not sure if its a virus or software/other problem

Log file is attached.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Multiple BSOD crashes. Antivirus programs keep shutting

Hi appletree.

First of all, you need to uninstall McAfee. It is such a program that no further troubleshooting is possible till it is present there.

Uninstall McAfee Using McAfee Removal Tool. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.

Another very important thing, you have a 64 bit OS installed on a computer having only 2 GB RAM. That is not desired. You should use 32 bit windows on such a computer.

So install 32 bit windows, dont get McAfee back there, use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.

Let us know for any further BSOD.

Hi there,

I have been getting lots of 9F crashes on a HP DV7 laptop running 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium.

Problem is the the minidumps are not being saved! I have set it up to save them (small dumps) and not to automatically restart. I cant debug it without them .

Any ideas why they wouldnt be saving?

Thanks!

A:BSOD's not saving minidumps, multiple 0x9F crashes

There are several reasons that may prevent you from having a DMP file in the usual places.

If your control panel is not configured for small dump you probably will then find it in C:\windows and it will be called MEMORY.dmp. It will overwrite every crash.

Other reasons are if you have UAC turned off, if you have a small page file, or a page file on a different HD than the OS.

Howdy all... Im about to get the hammer out....

Last two weeks I've had heaps of BSOD, sometimes every 15 minutes sometimes every hour. At the same time GOOGLE CHROME has been crashing heaps and giving a runtime error. Sometimes it will give an error and then BSOD.

The system is about 2 years old and up until now has run well. WHen the bsod started the system was relatively "clean" - recent format. The other day I totally reformatted the system with a clean install of windows enterprise /w sp1 to see if that would fix anything (thinking it was a driver issue). Its still happening - both the BSOD and the chrome crashes.

I've ran memtest x86, scanned all my hdd for errors /virus.etc and scanned the windows system files... all seems clean. Also re-seated ram/gpu AND cpu. Temps are not the problem from what I can tell.

Its doing my head in. Please help! I have attached my zip of the required files.

Thanks in advance!

I bought a Dell XPS 8700 last Aug ('15) for $999 from Costco online. We had problems almost immediately with the PC not powering up (at all). but since it occasionally worked, we waited too long to actually return the PC to Costco (beyond 90 days). We also did not install the PC until Nov '15 because we bought 5 PC's at once and it took time to install them all.
We called tech support and after four hours of getting the run around and "trouble-shooting" via phone with Dell's non-English speaking tech support staff, they finally agreed to send out a technician. Technician replaced power supply and on/off button. We thought it was fixed but no. We didn't really call Dale back because we never had time to spend another three or four hours on the phone and schedule another technician just way too time-consuming for us to do that and run a business so instead we suffered a long barely using the computer and using other computers that were working fine instead.
Fast-forward the clock today May 30, 2016. The computer is still under warranty till August 2016 I call Dell and explain the situation, and that we've already unsuccessfully had a field technician trying to fix the problem and they were unable to do so. I respectfully ask that they send a replacement computer as we didn't have the time to spend another 2 1/2 days troubleshooting with their phone tech-support team, and also field technicians they declined, stating that I should've cal... Hello everyone, I am getting lost trying to troubleshoot my BSOD problem myself, I sincerely thank you for your help in advance. All my knowledge is from Google searches, please assume I know nothing regarding IT...

Summary of History:
1) Jan this year: Bought laptop Sager NP7270 with a Samsung 850 EVO M.2 SSD 500GB HDD, chose Windows 7 professional 64bit as my OS installed on above m.2 SSD. For personal use: gaming, websurf, media, email, etc.

2) Started getting random BSOD during normal everyday use, no detectable pattern and times. My then current guesses-- possible sound driver clash w/Sound Blaster Cinema 2 and Realtek audio (since opening laptop I've had unresponsive issues with SB Cinema 2). Tried uninstalling SB Cinema 2 but I'm unable to (error, unable to). Also, issue with losing sound when resuming from hibernate/sleep.

3) March 20th: Decided to clean install with prepackaged drivers and OS disc. Did not install SB Cinama 2. All seemed well, except still getting no sound after resuming from hibernate/sleep-- realized if I go into sleep again and resume, sound will come back.

4) April 8th: hit with first BSOD after clean install, then subsequent random BSOD next few days (see below screenshot of bluescreenview BSOD crashtimes).

5) Sometimes during these few months: Ran SFC config, results normal. I also did run a HDD check (through Windows), and no errors. Also, ran standard Windows Memory Diagnostic, results normal.

6) Yesterday: ran 13hrs (8 passes) ... Read more

Computer crashes to BSOD (or just freezes) while playing games, browesing and even idleing.
It started a week ago, at first was BSOD atikmdag.sys driver so i thought it was the new ati drivers update i installed. Tried changeing drivers to nearly every version and it still crashed.
Reinstalled Win 7 and it wouldnt boot after the install becouse i had devices plugged in the computer-back usb hub wich worked fine till now. So after i unplug everithing from the usb hub i manage to boot windows install all the programs and drivers . But nothing changes.
Hard disk scans, no errors.
Runned Memtest86 for something like an hour, no errors. Prime95 memTest gave errrors after 2 min. So i removed 2x512 ram sticks wich left me with one stick of 2 gb and run Prime95 again. Error after 25 min.
In the dump files i attached, there are some dump files with nvidia driver also, wich is becouse at one point i switched my graphics card to my old nvidia card bud it still gave BSOD.

Its been 4 days and i dont know what else to try, still didnt manage to isolate this problem (it can be anything). My Ati radeon 4670 still has warranty but im not sure the card is the problem here. Im kinda desperate, please help . Thx

A:Random crashes (BSOD and freezing), multiple drivers responsable

At this point, i know it's a hardware problem. But it would help a lot to know wich hardware since i dont have the money for a new computer right now.

I have had multiple BSODs this month. Sometimes I get a black screen while starting from hibernation. Log info attached. Recently reinstalled NVIDIA Drivers. Installed RealTek Audio drivers 2 or 3 days ago so I get stereo sound again (no surround!) SFC doesn't find any issues.

OS - Windows 7
? x86 (32-bit)
? Windows Vista afaik
? Full Retail
? motherboard and sound are 3/4 years, Ram and Graphics card are about 1 year old

? Do not remember age of install
- have you re-installed the OS? no

? CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 2.00 GHz
? Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series 1GB
? MotherBoard: Cannot find in Device Manager
(opened the comp up and I don't really know where to look on this one MIGHT be a broadcom.
It's the origional one though.)? Power Supply: Dell Model H305N-00 305 watt (i think)

? System Manufacturer: Dell Dimension E521
? Exact model number: I don't know where to find that.

These crashes seem to happen most when I am logged in under my user name. The computer in question has 4 usernames on it because it is tecnicly a shared family computer though I use it as my own. The crashes don't seem to happen as much when logged in under the Admin user. My user name and the Admin name are supposed to be set up with the same permissions.

I can't think of anything else to add. Hopefully I did what was wanted correctly please tell me what else is required to get the help that I need at this point.

Hello Mauadib and welcome to TSF!

Unfortunately, there's only one dump attached so we won't be able to pin anything down right away, but it still works for the time being. First of all, it's a 1000007E: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M bugcheck.

I believe I funny enough may have found the culprit, it appears you're using Roxio... which does not work with version higher than XP to my knowledge. The driver is dated from 2006!

I'd recommend uninstalling that program ASAP.

Ensure that your chipset drivers are at the latest version: Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

You have modem drivers dated from 2008:

VSTCNXT3.SYS
VSTBS23.SYS
VSTDPV3.SYS

These are all Conexant SoftK56 Modem drivers, update here if it's still in use: Conexant: Support

Regards,

Patrick

Hello,
I am trying to reinstall Windows 8.1 Pro on my XPS 8700 and install all the hardware drivers from the Dell support website again.
However, when I try to install the latest Dell Wireless 1703 (Version 10.0.0.301, A01), the Dell Update Package (DUP) fails, and shows the below log.
