Dell System Utility Questions on New Windows 10 PC's

Q: Dell System Utility Questions on New Windows 10 PC's

Guys,

My desktop is a new OEM Dell based PC. My questions are about the Dell System Utility Scanner that runs every 3-4 days in the right-hand corner of the System Tray taskbar. It looks like a gear wheel:

1.) What does this thing actually do? Is it safe to uninstall from Control Panel? What would I be removing in Control Panel if I choose to uninstall this utility?

2.) I ask this because approximately every three months, a small quarter inch white square appears around the left-hand corner of the desktop. It's exact location can vary a bit.

3.) Rebooting removes this little square, which has no impact on computer performance when it is there.

4.) On-line users have noted that by removing the Dell System Utility from the computer, it removes this square. Some have also reported turning off the screen saver as well.

5.) If any of you with new Dell PC's have seen this little white square in conjunction with the Dell System information Utility please post what you have done to get rid of it for good.

I normally use Acronis True Image for backup and recovery. Fine for file and folder recovery, but I want a reliable full system image of the Windows 7 PCs before upgrading to Window 10. I've just discovered that the Acronis bootable recovery system could not read always my backups so I'm trying the Windows Backup and Restore utility.

For some reason I get an I/O error when backing up to a Western Data 3 TB USB 3 external drive. (Interestingly Acronis writes to the disk with no problem, and, after a few false starts, the recovery system has no problem reading it.) Before I research this more, is there any reason the Windows Backup and Restore utility would have trouble creating a system image backup on a 3 TB USB 3 external drive?

The backup seems to be working fine to an old Seagate 2 TB USB 2 external drive. Is there any way to verify the backup once it is created? The Acronis recovery system had trouble reading backup fines on this disk even though Windows (and Acronis TI 2015 running on Windows) had no trouble reading and writing. I want to make sure the Microsoft recovery system does not have the same problem. But I don't want to do an actual recovery just to validate the backup.

And finally, Process Explorer shows no disk I/O even though the backup seems to be progressing (slowly). Is this I/O somehow hidden. My Kaspersky security software does show I/O activity.

A:Create system image utility - some general questions

Ok. I found the cause for the error when trying to create the system image backup on my WD 3 TB drive. Searching for error code 2155348010 I found several hits. Many large external drives - not just WD - now use a sector size of 4096 bytes rather than the 512 bytes expected by the image copy creation utility.

One such explanation is at
https://social.technet.microsoft.com...ode-2155348010

WD has a utility to reformat its drives and turn on support to emulate 512 byte sectors, but that lowers performance. And I would have to backup and restore my backup disk because the reformatting obviously clears the drive. Not worth it since I've now created the system image on another drive (temporarily borrowed from another PC).

I've read the Win8 supports the 4096 byte sector size. Hopefully Win10 does, too.

A company I do work for had a system come in configured with a single drive, and the BIOS was configured with RAID. The system was upgraded to a Samsung SSD, but the Samsung Magician software commented drive was not set for AHCI. A quick change in the
BIOS from RAID to AHCI mode led to no problems on reboot. Will this cause any problems in the future? I'm not sure why Dell shipped this system with RAID configured and not a second drive, but performance testing with Magician had 3 categories within 5% of
the max performance and one around 10%. Thanks

Hello,

Have a Dell desktop, XPS 8900.

A pop up presumably from Dell says it wants to "update" my System BIOS.

Sounds scary.

Isn't the BIOS the complete "guts" of the OS ?
Whys should an update be necessary ?

Should I do it ?

Thanks,
Bob

A:DELL Wants To Update My System BIOS: Questions On, Please ?

The BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is the chip that controls your system during boot up until it is "transferred" to the OS itself.
(That's a nutshell description, but should suffice here).

It is not the OS, but the SW "Guts" of your computer (Motherboard).

Whether or not to upgrade:

First, what does the update correct? They should list that info, or link to it.

In general, I'm the type to always update the BIOS if a new firmware is released, that said though, my mainboard has three separate BIOS's that I can switch to, so if one is borked by an update, or changes I make, I can go back to the original (I leave one on the original for that purpose).

If all is well on your system, you do not have to perform the update at all, and that may be the best advice I can give you, especially if you are questioning it to begin with, but if you are willing to do it, depending on what it may change for your system, it may be worthwhile.

I'll review it and post later, or others may chime in as they see fit.

UPDATE: I checked the Dell site for your system, but don't see an update for today, that's not to say anything malicious is going on, but can you give more details on the pop up?

What version it wants to update you to? Etc.
You could also boot into your BIOS and give us the version you are on, if you are several versions "behind" the most current one, it may also be beneficial to do it, again depending on what I outlined above.

I have a friend who has a Dell Dimension 8400 that is having major problems with his hard drive. He is unable to open any programs (all the exe files are missing).

I attempted last night to boot his computer from the CD ROM with the Windows XP system restore disk to re-install Windows XP on his computer.

During the boot process I hit F12 and it allowed me to choose the boot from CD ROM option. It then goes to a blue screen and at the bottom it shows some drivers and other programs it's loading. Then it comes to a screen that states, hit enter to re-install Windows XP, hit R to fix a problem with Windows XP and hit F3 to exit.

I tried both enter to re-install Windows and R ro fix a problem with Windows. When I do either it stated something to the effect that there was no hard drive installed on the computer? I then exit out, and it starts to boot from the hard drive and loads into Windows XP fine, but once again, he can't start any programs because it cannot find the file to use to load any given program.

Sounds like some sort of virus? The questions I have are, is there anything I can do to salvage his existing hard drive and re-install Windows XP? (he has already backed up everything from the hard drive). and question 2, can he just buy a new hard drive and use the Dell Windows XP restore/re-install CD?

Thanks in advance.

I have a Dell Dimension 4700C manufactured December 2004. It has an 80GB SATA hard drive that has many bad sectors and would not boot up. I was able to get all data off using HDD Regenerator program to repair ALL the numerous bad sectors and than I rewrote partition info using TestDisk and finally was able to get access to drive to scan and recover with NTFS GetDataBack

I was able to make Ghost images of the 47 MB Dell Utility partition and the 3500MB Dell Restore partition. The main Windows partition would not image with Ghost--it gave numerous structure errors/warnings and would close after clicking through about 4 messages

I tried creating 3 partitions on the new 320GB WD drive with Partititon Magic 8 roughly the same size and formatting as old 80 GB drive (except Windows partition which is approx. 225 GB in size)

Than I restored the 2 complete Ghost images back to those respective newly created partitions. When I tried booting the computer up with new hard drive and hit CTRL F11, I could not start Dell Recovery. I was able to temporarily set Dell Utility partition to active using Partition Magic, reboot and run Dell Diagnostics

I think where I went wrong was that when I restored the Ghost image of Dell Restore partition it showed up as FAT32 instead of the CP/M, Concurrent DOS, CTOS formatting that displayed in Partition Magic. So I ran TestDisk and changed the partition type to DE CP/M and tried rebooting and CTRL F11 to start Dell Recovery and it did not work. I als... Read more

I want to create a bootable clone of my windows drive. I want to reinstall my whole system then clone it, so the next time I do a clean reinstall I can just go from this clone instead of having to actually reinstall and reconfigure everything. However I do not know of a program that can clone my drive and be bootable. I have tried Acronis true image, I have tried driveimage xml, i have tried paragon and a couple others, but none of them have produced a cloned drive which is BOOTABLE. Boot fails every time, and certain programs like acronis don't even make a cloned drive, they make some proprietary backup file which needs to be decompressed, and therefore is fundamentally useless, since i can't access any of the data without having that original program to decompress it. I want a program that will create an exact copy of my windows drive, so that I, theoretically, can remove my original windows drive from the machine, and still be able to boot from this clone in a perfectly seamless and functional manner.

Does anyone know of a software which can do this? Thanks!!

I don't have much faith in software imaging solutions either after simulating an emergency with Acronis and finding that it didn't work. Maybe I did something wrong but this type of software is not something most people are going to be practised at using. I have a hard drive copy station and made a direct copy to an extra hard drive for my main system. Occasionally I connect up that drive and make sure Windows is updated then revert to the original drive. It's not perfect but I feel more secure knowing that I can switch the connectors in my desktop and engage a useable drive if disastrer strikes. A copy station will only work to mirror a hard drive to another hard drive of at least equal storage capacity to the first one.

I want to backup my PC's data files to an external HD using W7 backup & restore utility.

If I use the recommended default option that also includes a back mirror of W7 will the PC automatically backup only new data since the backup at the scheduled option chosen??

Will the backed up files on the backup drive appear as windows file folders (My Pictures, My Documents etc.) or be in an encoded file format?

Thanks for your help

A:Questions re W7 backup & restore utility

Hello Provlima,

The Windows Backup on a schedule will only create incremental backups of the folders you have included in the backup at the scheduled time and date if changes have been made to the files since the last scheduled backup.

The system image will be a new full system image each time the schedule runs. If you run out of HDD space, then the oldest system image will automatically be deleted to make room for the new one.

Hope this helps,

Greetings,

Will soon be getting a new Dell PC with Windows 10. I have a computer tech guru who will be helping me set it up. This a replacement for a Windows 7 desktop. Some questions:

1.) I want to install Firefox right away because that is the browser most familiar to me and my family. I have a Patriot Flash Drive. When I transfer my back up files to the new PC, will my Bookmarks and toolbar shortcuts carry over in Firefox?

2.) After I install Firefox, will my Bookmarks and shortcuts also be found in IE 11? What about Edge?

3.) My Dell PC comes with a 12-Month Trial of McAfee AV, which I don't want. Is that a big deal to remove? I have been happy with Windows Defender on Windows 8.1 for my laptop and Windows 7 Microsoft Security Essentials for both programs non-intrusiveness. I am very cautious and do not go to unknown websites or open unknown files.

4.) My tech guru gets deals on MS Office through his company, and can set me up at least with Office 2013 or maybe the new Office 2016. I would be happy with Libre Office and am just a home user doing general task letter-writing and note taking. I have Office 2010 on my Windows 8 laptop and am not a fan of the ribbon. If I go with Libre Office, what functionality would I be losing by not upgrading to a modern version of MS Office?

5.) Lastly, what about Windows 10 new search system, Cortana? Good or gimmicky?

Thanks for any input in advance!

Jack

Hi all,

I have dell precision M90 since more than one year now, I bought it with the following configuration:

2.33 GHz processor

4 GB RAM

Nvidia Quardor 2500

150 GB HD

the machine is a mazing, but lately i decided to upgrade to windows 7

and i have two main questions related to each other.
did any one made a successful upgrade two windows 7 with M90 cause i checked over the Internet and i see a lot of contradicting opinions about that!!

The second question is regarding the storage, 150 GB is already not much with windows XP and all my software installed, so I'm really worried about the space when installing windows 7. i thought of adding a second drive, but sounds like a long process, of removing the media pay and getting a cradle for the new drive; which is not sold where I'm currently. so is there is any other way to install a second drive, if not, would you guys advice of changing the drive lintierly with bigger one, keeping in mind that the only ones i can find in the market is 5400 RPM and the one i have currently is 7200 RPM ?

so you suggestions regarding the correct action would be really appreciated ..

Awesome update to Windows 10 and SSD brings the M90 on in about 10-15 sec.

Ok so my problem here might seem a little complex but im going to go ahead and type it all out in hopes someone can help me out. Here goes:

Ok so I have a 160 GB HDD that Win7 is installed on. I have a slave drive that's 320 GB that has Windows XP on it. (I boot from the 160 GB Win7 HDD).

I have an 80 GB laptop HDD with USB enclosure which I want to use to make a complete disc image of using the Win7 backup utility from the Control Panel. The Win7 HDD has 70 GB used on it so I have enough space on the external laptop HDD.

So this all sounds good like ok what is the problem? So here's the problem...Win7 Backup Utility automatically keeps highlighted the HDD's which need to be imaged for Windows to funtion properly (according to the backup utility). So when I click the Backup and Restore option in the Control Panel and then click Create a system image, I choose my external HDD (the 80 GB laptop HDD in USB enclosure) and I hit next. On the next screen it has the Win7 160 GB HDD and the 320 GB Windows XP HDD checked and they are greyed out so I can not click either of them. So now my total backup is going to take up alot more space than the 80 GB HDD external can hold.

Solution I tried:

I shut down and unplugged the Win XP HDD from the MoBo and attempted to start the computer up. I received an error telling me that I have no active boot partition or something along those lines can't remember it word for word. So I shut down again and plugged the XP HDD ba... Read more

Hi, I'm not sure if anybody has had this same issue, but here goes:

After dropping a bunch of money on a Dell Inspiron with Windows Vista, I encountered an issue with playing music off the hard drive. I transferred all of my music from my external hard-drive (downloaded from CD's, not the net) onto the hard disk and then started it up. Regardless of whether I'm using Windows Media Player 11, Media Direct, the Media Center, no matter what I use, when each song is almost over (usually 10-20 seconds remaining) you hear what sounds like a CD skipping. It lliterally sounds like there is a CD in there and that it's skipping. Now, this only goes on for about two seconds or so, but it does so on every single song.

Incidently, I do not have this issue with my wifes Inspiron, which runs Windows XP home - it plays the files like a champ, which was my reason for purchasing one myself.

Anyway, Dell tech support tried for a couple hours to fix it, and then informed me that they were gonna have to forward the issue to some other people, that it's probably something to do with the new OS. So, while I wait 1 to 2 weeks for their response, let me ask everyone the following questions:

1) Has anybody experienced this same issue and managed to get it fixed? If so, how? Even a complete reinstall failed to fix the problem for me, so if anybody has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate hearing them.

Hi all,

After building my new computer and installing the OS/Programs last year I created a system restore point on another internal hard drive using the windows recovery tool (Settings -> Update & Security -> Recovery). I have a 500 gb Samsung SSD operating as the primary boot drive (C: )and the recovery image was saved to another internal IDE drive (E: ).

Here we are a year later and I want to restore the primary drive to the image that is on the E: without having to deal with a full reformat and program installation. My initial attempt was to boot into recovery (shift + click on restart) and use the restore tool to load the recovery image. Come to find out that the restore tool not only did not detect the E: drive but also had seemingly no capability of allowing me to select the recovery image or any other drive. In fact, it didn't detect any restore points at all and only offered the ability to search a network or scan for drivers. I chalked that up to a loss.

I thought that maybe if I dragged the recovery folder onto the desktop and repeated the above it would remedy the issue. It did not. After some googling I thought that maybe if I mounted the .vhdx file with Disk Manager and assigned it a drive letter that it would detect. It did not.

I began looking for 3rd party software and after reading countless posts that claimed Acronis True Image was the solution to all problems, I purchased it. Upon running the program I have the option to clone drives and ... Read more

I have a new laptop with Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium installed.
It is a Dell XPS. It came with an extra partition for "Dell Utility" of size 40 Mb. This is the first partition.

There is a partition misalignment.
To check ,I booted an Ubuntu USB(live, without installing).
When I opened Disk Utility in Ubuntu, I find that there is a partition misalignment of 512 bytes with the Dell Utility partition.
How do I fix it?
The warning message says that there could be poor performance due to this.
Is it true?
Is it going to affect the performance of other drives or my general usage?

Hi

Using a Dell laptop with Windows 7 - laptop has just died by undertaking a registry clean up using norton utilities. It won't reboot or restart and has tried repairing itself but can't.

Anyone any ideas? Unfortunately, it hasn't been backed up for a few months. Worst case scenario - just want to be able to get all the data off the hard drive and buy a new laptop.

Any help appreciated.

Guys,

The comments below are with regards to the New Dell Support 3.0 utility and computer maintience upgrade that will either auto download later this month for users of Dell Computers with Windows XP, or that can be download through Dell's Support website. (This will automatically replace the version 2.0 installed on most Dell systems.) This version is indicated by your little icon in your system tray. If it's an exclamation point, you have Dell Support 2.0. If it is an "E", you have Dell Support 3.0. My take is, if you don't have 3.0, don't worry about it. Below explains why:

I am not from the school of thought that newer is necessarily better, especially when dealing with new software just released by any company. Or the critical and secure updates on Windows Update

There are two many unknowns with this product with regards to how it is going to act and interact with our systems. Hardware and software conflicts could creep up with the very issues t... Read more

So i purchased a nw 320gb Western Digital Pata drive (ide connection). took out old drive and straight swapped it with new one. when i bought pc from dell around 6,7 yrs now it came with xp home edition. i don't have the original disks but i have an xp pro disk.
after fitting new h/drive in i pressed power button but keep gettin the message "F1 TO RE BOOT, F2 FOR SETUP UTILITY"
I HAVE TRIED:
removin cr2032 battery for 30 mins from m/board (power cable pulled out" then tried but same message.

i have removed all the ide connections and re inserted but to no AVAIL.

I HAVE TRIED EVERY VARIATION I COULD THINK OF IN THE BIOS SETTINGS TO BOOT FROM CD ONLY,HARD,USB ETC BUT STILL NOTHING. still get same message.

Could it be my xp pro boot up cd is faulty?, i have put the cd in laptop(which has vista home prem on it) and it loads up to the main xp screen so i assume it is a bootable disk.

on the problem dimension machine i have 2 cd rom drives and a floppy drive if thats of any help.

I would really appreciate some kind soul/s help on this. my kids have no pc and i can't afford a new one at the moment hence why i spent the ?50 on a new hard drive.

Friends I'm pretty sure I have used Dell's flash util under Windows 7 previously with no issues. But today I'm trying to run their BIOS update A11 for an Optiplex GX620 and it fails under my normal [admin priv.] account, under the Administrator account, under the Administrator account "Run As Administrator". This system has Windows 7 Ultimate, 32-bit

Anyone have a cure for this disease?

A:Dell Opti GX620 Bios Flash utility under Win7 Ultimate?

One of two ways,

1. If you have a floppy drive,

Drivers and Downloads

and follow the instructions under "Run the BIOS update utility from DOS environment (Non-Windows users)".

2. If the above isn't available (no floppy drive) and if you have a spare hard drive (or even a second drive with a small partition will do in a pinch), install XP on it (don't need to worry about updates or anything, only going to need it long enough to run the bios update) and then run the bios update from there. If you do decide to go this route make sure to disconnect the drive with Windows 7 on it (and any other drives) so you don't mess up the 7 install, and end up with a broken bootloader.

I recently purchased a Dell 1470 notebook and immediately noticed that the keys were "bouncing" (multiple keystrokes registered for a single keypress).  The problem is not isolated to just my laptop or model; as you will find here, it is showing up on others as well.  If you are experiencing this problem, I feel for you.
The problem was sporadic, but occurred often enough to make my typing look like that of a third-grader (no offense intended to any third-graders out there).  The problem persisted, even after three keyboard change-outs along with an OS wipe/ factory restore and also a motherboard swap-out.  A thorny problem, indeed.  At that point, it was determined that the problem was driver-related.  The keyboard driver is supplied by Microsoft, thus placing me at the complete mercy of the driver development team(s). Searching revealed no resolutions to this issue, no driver updates or patches, neither at Microsoft, nor at Dell, nor on the WorldWideWeb.
Now, being a firmware/software developer myself, I am familiar with keyboard bounce... it exists in all interfaces that have an electro-mechanical switch involved.  The objective is to turn the "chatter" at the switch closure into a clean change of state... "off" to "on", with no chatter at the boundary.   (If you are curious about the topic, you can read about it in detail here.)  Computer keyboards certainly fall i... Read more

Since video cards and add-on programs (Direct X, etc) are so fundamental to game play, if would be nice to have a utility that would give a yes or no on the question "Will this game work on my computer?"

Bottom line is I don't know if my PC is 3D, GL rendering or what anymore since video card evolution is non-stop. A utility program to scan the computer's capability would help.

My "C" drive is using 27.4GB of data but the Image size is only 12.9GB. Could I have done something wrong? I thought the image size would be at least as big as the used space on the "C" drive. I'm concerned that I didn't get all my programs, files and settings backed up correctly.

Any thoughts?

Thanks............Tom

P.S. I tried to do this last night using DVD's for backup but decided to abort after 9! Dvd's were burnt and it still was not completed.

Welcome,
I do not know if you did it right, but the image is compressed and should be smaller.

I tried to put it on DVD, basically it does not work.

Hi all, I just re-formatted my Hard drive and Now that I have everything up again, i was trying to connect to the internet, however the system isn't recognizing my Ethernet card. I don't have the disk anymore as I haven't had to do a format in about 5 years. Windows won't even add their own drivers for some reason.

I was looking for a utility that can go through all my Hardware and maybe tell me what the name of the Ethernet card is so I can download the drivers from the internet to this computers floppy drive then upload onto my comp.

Thanks for the help!

I just noticed that I have blank square boxes under startup item and command fields of the system configuration utility under startup items. Has anyone else seen this? If so what is it and how do I get rid of it.

A:System Configuration utility

I just (today) overcame this...I'm not sure at all how it happened or what may have caused it, so I can't really be of much help.

My situation started a couple of days ago when I suddenly had these messages at startup which referred to files which could not be found. I used a combination of Autoruns, msconfig, and regedit...to track down and manually delete any/all references to these two files. My system now boots up normally .

So...I can't tell you what it was or how it happened but I can say that deleting any/all registry and file references took care of it on my system.

I don't think it was malware of any sort, but I'm no expert at determining such.

I am trying to remove Norton Antivirus 2005 from Windows XP, but can not remove it from the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs option. The instructions I received from Norton recommends that I begin at Start, Run, enter "msconfig" and then proceed through the Systems Configuration Utility window by making sure that "ccApp" is checked. My problem is that I can't get the SCU window to stay open when I enter msconfig into the Run box. It only appears for a brief second.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks!

A:System Configuration Utility

Hi clw and welcome to BC

The fact that msconfig won't stay open is a classic sympton of spyware. When that happens you can't usually access regedit.exe from Run or your Internet Options from the Tools menu in IE.

Suggest you post a log in the HiJack This forum on this site after folllowing the instructions about posting a HiJack log at the top of the forum.

Gudday all
I have made some start-up changes using msconfig.
Once I rebooted the machine the following message appears, see attachment.
I want to keep the changes but the message seems to imply that I cannot.
If I check the box will the changes be accepted? Will this message appear every time I start?

A:Using XP System Configuration Utility

The changes have already been made. This is just a warning. As the label on the checkbox says, if checked it will not appear on next startup.

I was infected by 6 false trojan alerts. I ran Malwarebytes and it caught them and removed them but on my System Configuration Utility- Startup, there are two items. One begins with ~tmph and the other one starts with "a" and I can't read the whole address. I unchecked both but how do I get rid of them and how can I see the whole address? They are both unframiliar to me.

MSCONFIG.EXE is a troubleshooting tool - not a fixing tool.First, re-enable them in MSCONFIG, then use this free tool to locate them and disable/delete them: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...s/Autoruns.mspxIf you have difficulties with this tool, post back and we'll see if we can get the address for another one from garmanma.

Hello, In my "msconfig" box there is an entry under win.ini called
[MCI Extensions.BAK] Could someone tell me what this is for as I would like to delete it if no use. It has been disabled for as long as I can remember. Many thanks.

A:System Configuration Utility

MCI has to do with communications devices and I believe multi-media as well.

since is has the ".BAK" that would give the impression that it was backed up brolly due to some system changes.

Uncheck it, reboot the system and test your functionality. *IF* things still work, you should be able to safely remove it.
Good Luck!

Hi Acer2000...how are you?

it probably is related to the failed installation..try backing up the registry key then removing the entry. If something gets affected, you can always restore the key.

I'm anticipating putting a versatile machine together that will check and scan HDs, virus and malware removal and also serve as a remote access machine (remotely servicing other machines).

I will be using Win 7 pro as my OS. I will be using mutliple boot drives (i.e., one for scanning HDs and virus removal, a separate system HD for Remote Access usage).

I will need only to buy a cpu, mainboard and RAM. Reliability and function are priority, but so is budget. I have been Intel only for several years, but am not opposed to AMD if it meets all of my requirements.

The above said, I am hoping for recommendations for the cpu and mainboard.

Given that I will generally be using this machine for singular functions at any given time, I assume that Hyper-threading will not be important?

The parts I'm considering:

Gigabyte Intel H81 Motherboard

Intel Pentium G3220

or

Intel G3420

I have not used AMD for many years, so I'm not familiar with the possibilities and savings of today.

The above components would run me around $150. I don't want a "bare minimum" machine and am not opposed to spending more, but would like to spend as little as possible for what will easily meet my needs above. The one thing I don't want is slow scans and Remote Access lag (internet is 50/5mbps and should not be a bottleneck).

Thanks for any ideas.

A:Utility system on a budget

So in a nutshell you want a test machine that you can slip drives into or hook up to others etc etc?? I am only asking because you may be wanting to do something that I did and that is have a tester machine I can try out different programs and hardware etc on??

for that I just refurbished an older machine that I got for nothing it has a fairly decent CPU and even with DDR2 RAM but it does just about anything I ask of it.
You may be able to pick up one and do that with it.

But if you are like me and only have access to retail priced stuff then it is going to cost around $500 - out here at least I don't know where you are without going and looking and it does depend on the retail situation where you are and what quality you want to build into it.

Hi Everyone,

Can you tell me if everything is okay here? I ask myself how can the Office Source Engine show stopped when it is checked?

Anyway, I would like to know how I can get rid of the STI Simulator which is an old entry that was left behind when I removed the software of my old webcam! Do you have an idea how I might be able to do so?

Thank you

A:System Configuration utility

Go into the Services and enable it

I think I provided you with this information in another thread

Quote:

OSE.EXE is part of Microsoft Office software.
OSE.EXE is the system service called OFFICE SOURCE ENGINE.
OFFICE SOURCE ENGINE is required for reinstal, or install an "on demand" feature in Microsoft Office 2000/2003.
Required for using Microsoft Office.

STI Simulator is going to have to be removed via the Registry

Hi Cyclelegs, Thank you for your inquiry, I will do my best to assist you! The HP System Event Utility  enables special function keys on the system to be programmed. I believe it adds the extra features to the buttons. such as Wireless on and off. When I tried to install it on a lab computer here it just told me it was already installed.  When I put it in the search bar it just brings up the download. You are not able to access or use it to alter or change anything. I hope this has addressed your concerns.

I have XP, IE6, and M Office 2003.

I do run>MSconfig and msconfig comes up. I deselect several programs in the startup and services tabs and exit, so the window comes up saying I have to restart my computer for the changes to take effect. I click restart and the computer reboots. On my desktop comes a window about the System Configuration Utility and how some things have changed. A large section of the window is missing, so that the extreme bottom end of the window is a checkable box that says "Do not show this message again" which I select. However, this System Configuration Utility window pops up every time I boot up my computer. But when I put the computer back in normal mode, the window doesn't pop up on reboots. What's going on?

I am running Windows XP Professional. When i get into the Startup menu within the System Configuration Utility i can see a number of Startup Items listed together with the Command and Location description for each Startup item. The location description is the same for each startup item - "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run." However there are 3 boxes ticked under the Startup Item heading with no startup item details (blank), no details under the Command heading (blank) but under the Location heading it shows - "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run."
Can anyone tell me why I would have details showing under the Location heading in three instances but nothing showing under the corresponding Startup Item and Command headings?

Hi,
The below message keeps showing up every time I start my computer. I checked to make sure the utility is set to normal mode, which it is, however it keep showing up.
"You have used the system configuration utility to make changes to the way windows starts.

The system configuration utility is currently in diagnostic or selective startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time windows starts.

Choose the normal startup mode on the general tab to start windows normally and undo the changed made using the system configuration utility.

(box to tick) Don't show this message or launch the system configuration utility when windows start."
I booted in safe mode and used hijackthis to delete the below line, however once I reboot in normal mode it does not show, however the next time I start my pc it comes back.

If you've made any changes to the startup, here's where it will be. If not it may be time to look at malware.
