Windows Explorer Scroll Bar Hides Columns

Q: Windows Explorer Scroll Bar Hides Columns

This happened for many years until a few days ago:
In Windows Explorer (in Windows 7), when I click on a folder on the left side of the screen, four columns are displayed on the right side of the screen: Name, Date modified, Size, Type; and the scroll bar is on the far right side of the screen. All is good.

Now when I click on a folder on the left side of the screen, the same four columns are displayed on the right side of the screen, but the scroll bar on the right side of the screen has shifted far to the left so that only some of the characters of the Name field are displayed; the rest of the name and the other three columns are hidden. I can move the scroll bar to the far right side of the screen (where it used to be), but the next time I open Windows Explorer, the scroll bar has shifted to the left side of the screen again, covering up columns' displays, so I have to manually move the scroll bar to the far right side of the screen again.

How do I get the scroll bar to stay on the far right side of the screen like it used to?
And why did it change? Did I do something inadvertently?

I don't know if this is a define behavior or a known bug, in any case the following are the steps to reproduce it:
- Close all foreground applications.
- Run Windows Explorer.
- Run another applications.
- Do the ALT + TAB (or ALT + TAB + SHIFT ) key combinations. A new "window" on the center of your desktop should appear. This window (I don't remember the name) shows all foreground applications actually running. You should see only two applications: Windows Explorer and the other one. Move back on Windows Explorer selecting it.
- On Windows Explorer select a file to delete or create an empty one and select it.
- Now, click the Canc key button or click on the file and from the popup menu that appears click on Delete menu item.
- At this point ,the Windows Explorer Delete Folder dialog should appear, asking you to delete or not the file.
- Do not click on the dialog, leave it as it is.
- Now, move on to the other foreground application, with the ALT + TAB (or ALT + TAB + Shift) key combinations. At this point you should see only the other application and don't see the Windows Explorer anymore, and so you are not able to select it by the key combinations above.

In Windows Explorer under XP, all file types had the same basic set of columns... File name/date modified/file type/size. This is mostly true with Windows 7, but I notice that with certain file types such as mp3s, wavs and jpegs, Microsoft have tried to be clever and choose columns more appropriate to the file type. So mp3s now default to name/#/title/contributing artist/album.

My question is: are these defaults user accessible?

I'm a photographer and I have about 100 folders containing jpegs. I'd like to change the columns currently shown, but I don't want to have to change 100 folders individually.....

Hi Astronautilus and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yes you can do this. Below is ashort tutorial on how to change it for the documents folder template. You can do the same for any other folder type.

The folder before change.

With a new column added

Is it possible to make the columns I choose to view stay put in Windows 7 Windows Explorer? I've tried turning the library view off. I still get a narrow view in the right pane showing the libraries and a huge preview pane. I want to expand the first column to show my selections, e.g. file type, date, etc., then stay put. I drag the little line out each time expanding my file view/details pane, but each time it pops back to the narrow library view. Thanks in advance.

Folder header Context menu Modification
I want to know how to modify and add to the default column details context menu in vista.
Open a folder.
Right click on the column headers and you get a context menu.
This menu contains: 'type, size, authors, tags and date modified.

1. What is the correct name of this context menu ?
2. Where do I find it in the registry ?
3. How do I modify it to include "Date Created" ?

I know all about how to set default columns. That is NOT what I want to do.

In Windows Explorer in Windows 7 I like to use the Details view. I have set of columns/headings that I prefer to use. The problem is I would like to set these columns up and have them be the default for every folder I open. As it is now every folder I open I have to customize the columns again. They stay for that folder but every new folder requires me to customize. Is there a default option so that I can set what I want and have it apply to every folder?

I just installed Windows 7 a few days ago. Prior to this I had XP on the machine that 7 is now on. I did not use Explorer in XP I used a different file manager. I did this mainly for the split view. Now that 7 as the snap feature getting two panes is easy with Explorer so I am going to give it a try for a while. Thanks.

Hello Anomaly, and welcome to Seven Forums.

After you have the folder views and columns set how you like them for that folder, you could do either one of the tutorials below to set it for other folders.

For all folders:

For all folders only with the same folder template as the original

Hello all, I hope you had a great xmas/family time

I had been having plenty of "not responding" apps and windows, so I did some registry clean thing online.

Im not sure that caused the second problem, but its really weird and Ive never seen it before, in "details view", there is only an icon for each file/folder, but no name, no columns of any kind, just blank. If I RH mouse click where the column name would be, I see a blank where there would be a list of columns to add or remove. Then when I choose "More..." there is NOTHING in the list of potential other columns!

The weirdest part, this only happens sometimes / to certain folders, I am not sure which and I will keep a diary now... but I would love to sort it out but dont know where to start.

Thanks guys,

I want to include "length" in the Windows Explorer file folders for Music since I need this to select the correct length of music for video editing/post production. I added "length" from the menu, but on returning later it was gone and what appears to be the default setting was back. I had also removed a column at the same time, but it returned when I revisited. The question? I need to know where to change the default settings for the columns and how to ensure that changes I make from the menu remain saved. I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit as my OS if that helps. I'm new to the Forum so I hope I have submitted this correctly.

In Windows Explorer, Detail View, is there a way to remove/disable the additional columns? (ie: Track, Artist, length, etc) I'm a simple person, and only want the main columns displayed, (Size, Type, Date) and Windows 7 seems to ignore me when i change the views. Even the "Reset All", and "Apply to All" seem to be ignored after a day later.

In XP your could remove them from RegEdit under HKCR\SystemFileAssociations and deleting the "Audio", "Video", and "Images" keys, and Explorer would 'forget' how to handle them, and details view would remain the same, but Win7 doesn't seem to respond to this either.

Ok I will try my best to describe what is happening.

When I open my windows explorer to see all my folders. The scroll bar on the left hand side that scrolls through the folders keeps scrolling on it's own to the bottom. When I click on the up arrow to scroll up, it overtakes and scrolls to the bottom again.

Does anyone know why this is happening, or how I can fix it?

Hope this makes sense.

A:Windows Explorer (scroll bar)

My solution would be to adjust your mouse setting from the control panel and to adjust the touch pad settings. It is probably one of the two. My guess is, the touch pad.

I am running XP home. When I open Internet Explorer I lose some of the standard information ie File, edit, view, favorites, tools, help at the top of the page. To retrieve it I have to select the Restore/Restore Down button. What setting needs to be changed to make these fields stay in place? Also, shouldn't IE always open the Window in the "full" position and if you want to reduce the size of the Window you would then select the Restore Down button? Sems like there are two settings that need to be changed here.

ANYONE that recognizes these symptons please help me IDENTIFY this issue!

I plugged a friends Seagate Expansion drive (SRD00F1) into my machine's usb port, Windows Vista started to load the drivers and then says success. I went to My Computer and the machine can't see the drive. After this I started to see the following occurring:

1) Explorer shows no filenames or folder names. If I click on the file to rename, the name is there, but when I close that, the name disappears.
2) All the normal column names in Explorer details view are gone, "Author" is the only one showing. All of the common ones are unavailable when I try to choose details by right clicking the column header, Filename, Size, Date Created/Accessed/Modified etc...
3) Many windows won't open, specifically Control Panel windows like "Backup and Restore Center", System, regedit.exe.
4) The "Start Search" feature of the Start Bar returns nothing. I found out later, No searches work.
5) In My computer the sizes of the drives and free space are in bytes, not KB or MB.
I've done a complete Virus scanning ticket with Broni:
I've tried running SFC many times, SFC says errors fixed, but the CBS.log is repeating the same errors every time.
Any assistance on identifying this issue would be greatly appreciated.

When I open a folder using the tree in the left pane the position of the selected folder change.
It's like the layout of the tree pane is not working fine.
Maybe they autoscroll in order to display all the child's folders but I don't like this.
When the folder i want to open is in the middle of the pane (vertically)
it moves often to the bottom and i can't even see the child's folder, and some time it move the opened folder to the top of the pane

I just would like to have the thing working as it's in XP. When we open a folder, this one don't move and the children appears under this one.

Do you understand the issue?

A:bad scroll on folder tree pane (in windows explorer)

Yes, this is one of those "WTF were they thinking" mistakes in the W7 file explorer

I can't understand why in the world they would scroll the left pane DOWN to hide exactly the very thing you are trying to look at :/ It should scroll up to either the top (if the child folder list is long) or up just far enough to show the entire child folder list.

I do not know of any way to fix it, it's a built in behavior of explorer which would have to be fixed by MS themselves...

Yes, so navigating long lists of files and folders, we can scroll up and down which ever pane has focus. But it annoys the sh!t out of me when you need to scroll the navigation pane too. Surely it can be configured to scroll whatever the mouse is hovering over rather than having to be in focus as well. Any one got tips to alter this behaviour?

So, I've recently installed Windows 10 on my device. All went smoothly and it runs pretty well, except for one minor, yet very annoying issue: two finger scrolling doesn't work in Windows Explorer. It works perfectly fine in other applications such as Chrome or Edge. It just doesn't work in Explorer (not IE, Explorer the file manager).
I also have a pointstick in my keyboard, which also scrolls perfectly fine in Explorer. A external mouse also scrolls as you'd expect. It's just the two finger scrolling on the touchpad. I've updated the driver to the newest available on the Dell website, I've tried older versions of the driver... nothing works unfortunately.
Like I said, it's not a major issue, but it sure is annoying.
For the record, it's an Alps touchpad using driver version: 10.1207.101.102
Does anyone have the same issue and/or has found a solution?
Thanks in advance!

Not sure if this is due to my hardware or some setting in Windows 7. I have Win 7 Pro x64 on a Sony Vaio ZPCZ11. Using the MS Natural Wireless Laser Mouse 7000. In the file view of Windows File Explorer, if I click in the space and wheel scroll, everything works fine and the scrolling is smooth. But when I click in the Navigation Pane (Folder List) and try the same thing, it wants to scroll an entire page at a time. I cannot get the smooth mouse scrolling to work in this Pane! Any ideas how to fix this?

A:Cannot enable smooth mouse scroll in Windows Explorer Navigation Pane

Well, if anyone cares, it appears that my scroll rate was set too high...even though it works well in certain apps and areas, it just goes too far in Windows Explorer. Set to a lower rate, it scrolls in the Nav Pane normally.

Hi guys,

As stated in the title, the 2-finger scroll function doesn't work (anymore), ONLY in the windows file explorer. It works just fine in IE, Firefox, Adobe, Office, what have you - anywhere but the file explorer.
I just noticed this recently, which must mean it is relatively new, but I can't pinpoint when it started. I think it used to happen sometimes, but probably was fixed with restarting the laptop or the touchpad program... but I was mostly using a mouse, not the pad, so I didn't pay attention much.

I have searched for solutions, but I haven't been able to find any other thread dealing with this exact problem. My apologies if it has been treated already elsewhere.

So, your suggestions are welcome.

A:Two-finger scroll not working, ONLY in explorer.exe (Win explorer)

Same problem here. Scrolling was normal everywhere except inside of Windows Explorer windows. Found a bunch of worthless info about changing cursor theme, etc, etc, etc....... I realized that I had installed a wired mouse recently, and it must have taken over some of the scrolling functions.

The solution - Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall your old Elan (or maybe Synaptics) driver. RESTART. Go to your touchpad vendors site, or your laptop vendors site, and get the newest copy of the drivers. Reinstall. RESTART. Everything should be back to normal.

I found that you had to do the restarts in between the uninstall and reinstall, or it will not work. I am using an Elan touchpad on an Asus laptop, but I assume that this fix should work with other setups.

I would have to say this problem is pretty unique. I am able to drag windows completely under the taskbar and thus lose them. In order to click on them again I have to drag the tasbar somewhere else, and then either move the offending window, or drag the taskbar back, thus causing it to realise that a window is where it shouldn't be and moving it up a bit. I've tried toggling all the taskbar options, such as always on top to no avail. I'm using Windows XP sp2, updated via WinDiz.

Hope someone can help. I am running W7 64 bit Home edition and Outlook 2003. Just started using Outlook and I am trying to figure out how I can find my pictures to attach to an email. When I click on Attach in Outlook the box that opens does not show the Libraries and I can't find my Picture files. I dont have this problem using web mail or Eudora just in Outlook.

I do not want to insert pictures in my email just attach - but how do I find them

A:Windows 7 hides files from Outlook

You might be better off posting a screenshot of your Outlook's File Open box. By default, it will point to the Libraries, so you may have to manually find the folder in which your pictures are stored.

As for the Send to email....that problem is due to the fact you don't have Outlook 2003 set as your default mail app. It should prompt you with this whenever you open Outlook.

I just read an article in which Jim Coates of the Chicago Tribune answers a question from a reader who indicated that he (the reader) has Norton virus protection on his computer but got "MediaTicketInstaller.ocx" on his computer and Norton couldn't delete it no matter what he (the reader) tried. He indicated that Norton told him that the file in question (MediaTicket...) was in the Windows/Downloaded Programs files but using Windows Explorer he (the reader) couldn't find it. Mr. Coates indicated that this type of malware file uses Windows System Registry to hide the file so that it can't be found even if the search includes "show all hidden and system files." Mr. Coates then tells the reader how to solve his problem. You can see the whole article by going to, going the archives section and paying $2.95 to see and download the article, or you can E-mail Mr. Coates at [email protected].

In using my adware destroy programs I frequently see malware flash by when the programs are doing their thing by going through files but when I go to "search" in Windows I don't find the file/program! Could this be another example of malware hiding in the Windows Registry? Also, is there a program available that will "search and destroy" all of these "hidding" programs without having to go to the Resistry to find and delete them? Thanks.

I'm on Win 7 Ultimate x64.

I just upgraded to a 4K monitor, and I've read on some issues related high DPI displays, and this might be one of them. I've set the default magnification to 150% in my Windows 7 display settings. And for the most part things look ok. But I noticed some strange behavior within file explorer.

Here's an image for reference
You can see all that unnecessary extra space in the "Size" and "Date Modified" column. So naturally I try to drag the column width to make it smaller. But it wouldn't cooperate! If I try to make the Size column smaller, Explore jerks around and suddenly makes either the "Name" or "Date Modified" column bigger. Same if I try make one of the other columns smaller.

I've tried the Right click options on the columns: "Size Column to fit" and "Size all columns to fit". No good. It would still give me a bunch of unnecessary space in all columns.

This issue didn't happen on my old 1080p monitor. I can resize columns as I wished and they would behave.

Anyone have any idea what's happening and how to solve this?

A:File Explorer: Bad hehavior when trying to resize columns (4K monitor)

Have you tried specifying an exact size for columns?
Right click on the column header

Click on the header you wish to set
Type the desired value in the box at the bottom

If that works, set your Folder Template so Windows will remember the settings.

My problem is this. I was infected on three different occassions over the past couple months with several different rogue fake virus softwares.

Windows XP Recovery Console

The first two were relatively easy to irradicate but the recovery console basically crippled my computer. Although I was able to get most of it out, it still has left me with some residual permissions issues. Some of the folders in my start menue still show as empty allthough I can still go to my program files and open them and repin them to my start menu.

I have already followed instructions on how to reset folder visibility, it helped, but some still show empty. It also has effected my Microsoft Security Essentials, It wont update. Even with a reinstall.
When attempting an update I get the following error:

As well as it telling me that my windows automatic updates are turned off and when I try to turn them on in the console, it tells me it cant turn them on, and to go to the control panel to do so, but when I do this, they are actually turned on there.

I also noticed in my DDS.txt there is AVG still running. A while back I had a horrible problem with AVG conflict that caused major computer issues. I had paid version of AVG and uninstalled it. Used the uninst... Read more

After I've read the tutorial on "How Malware hides and is installed as a service on Windows NT/XP/2000/2003", I've learned alot of things about services! However, I still have some questions regarding to it. I know that a service is launched by its corresponding value of ServiceDLL, or the actual service file used to start the service in the registry. My questions are:
1)If the service for a certain program had stopped, such as Windefend service had stopped. Will I still be able to run Window defender?
2)If the value of ServiceDLL for a particular service is missing, changed or corrupted, will the service still able to run? Will it ever happen?
3)If a service does not have a group name specified, does that mean it is lanunched by Window?
4)My last question is what confuse me the most, I want to want what's the difference between processes and services?

I will be really really appreciative if someone can answer these question, and thanks to Bleeping computer for writing such helpful tutorial, benefit me alot

I want it to be just like I printed 2 columns but with 4 instead. I want to use the left side of the page for page 1 and the left side for page 2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there,

Sorry I really wasn't sure where to put this and I'm thinking I've probably got the wrong forum so I apologise in advance.

I cannot scroll with the wheel on either of my mouses in Internet Explorer. However, I can scroll in Opera but again not in Firefox.

Anybody have any suggestions why this is? It could be something pretty obvious I really don't know.

Thanks! :)

I got the beta of IE7, working fine except one feature is really annoying me. On my mouse if I scroll IE will periodically jump every two seconds, I prefer that It jumps the three lines (as set in mouse properties) per scroll not have it annoyingly jump every two seconds, and not stop unless you click the screen.

Does anyone know how to turn this off? I had a quick look through the options but there does not seem to be anything. If there is no way to turn this off I think I will downgrade as I use the mouse scroll feautre alot.

Thanks in Advance

I remember in Windows Explorer on Windows XP that when you opened a folder by double clicking it then that folder would move to the top of the folder tree and then expand revealing it's sub-folders.

I'm trying to select multiple files in a long row of files, to do this I drag a selection box to select all of the files I want. The problem is that I can't scroll with the mouse wheel while either of the mouse buttons is held down, or at least not outside of the library.
The 'library' sub-folders are the only locations in explorer that this still works in (it works everywhere else, like browsers).

Recently installed QTTabBar and Classic Shell, I also ran four .bat/registry files Enable_Windows_7_Explorer_Auto_Arrange.bat/Disable_Windows_7_Explorer_Auto_Arrange.bat

After uninstalling the two programs and running the Disable files, I still can't select and scroll in folders outside of the library.

I don't think it's my mouse either because, as I said, I can do it in the libraries and the browsers; and I have a Wacam Bamboo Tablet which let's me click and after clicking with it and trying to scroll with the mouse, it still doesn't work.
Can anyone help me with this, if not, would it help if I upload the .bat files?

A:Solved: Highlight + Scroll not working in Explorer

As a workaround try highlighting the top file then while holding down a Shift key on the keyboard highlight the lowest file, all the files in between should now be highlighted as well. Holding down a Ctrl key let's you highlight single files.

Not sure what you did with those Bat files, you could try a System Restore to before you used them to get back to a 'normal' registry. A link to where you found them might help then.

Hey Guys,
I have pictures of the virus below. My bf didnt have a anti-virus software for months, I know, so stupid. Anyway his computer started running super slow our of nowhere, I have cleaned up his computer once before and it ran fast after clean install and I was able to delete windows.old folder with no problems, but this time it did not, it was still as slow even thought I deleted many unnecessary games/applications.

When you do a clean install, it saved all your stuff in windows.old folder. I went to C: drive to remove it, but as I tried to delete it (previous time it let me, this time it was locked) the screen went black with gray graphics and a couple smiley faces, see below picture (I was able to snap a pic with my phone):

So the windows.old folder looked like it was deleted because it dissapeared, I went to trash just to make sure and it was not there but it was not there so I went to folder options and unhid all the folders, and there it was on C:drive all hidden. I took ownership of all folders and started deleting them, it deleted everything except macromedia flash player folder (I think that is where the virus is).

I downloaded several anti virus scanning software including Microsoft Security Essentials, and Kavinsky (sorry dont remember exact name, but it top for windows). Neither of those detected it.

Anyway I gave up on it and went to bed, the next day I went back on computer and decided to retry deleting the folder, the windows.old folder ... Read more

I am having issues with the way file trees open and scroll in Windows Explorer.

I have explorer configured to resemble the classic Windows file manager look; drive and directory tree on the left, files displayed in a detailed list format on the right.

When I click a folder in the tree to expand its contents, depending on the amount of items in that folder, the left pane usually scrolls. The problem I am having is that there doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason to the scrolling method. Sometimes the folder I am working in jumps to the very top of the window, sometimes it jumps to the middle, sometimes it jumps all the way to the bottom. When it jumps to the bottom, I have to scroll both panes to see the contents.

Is there a way to mitigate this behavior? I'd rather the folder simply stay put, or maybe jump to the top of the window at the worst. Having it drop to the bottom of the window (which seems to be the case more than 70% of the time) gets annoying because I am constantly having to adjust and scroll to view the contents.

I started out with the two previous posts about macros (post 1, post 2) that move rows into columns, but I'm having a little trouble getting it to work for what I need. First, I'm trying to do a data merge into Word, but in order to get the data merge to work/look the way I want it to, I need the XLS data to be in columns.

I'm attaching an example file that has one worksheet of the sample data (though my "real" data has about 300 rows) and the other worksheet is an example of the outcome I need.

Is there anyway I can do what I need? Exporting into another file or another worksheet within this file would be fine.

Thanks in advance.

Hey All !

I started working on my friends computer. I installed a buch of stuff (all good, reputable programs recommended here by the "senior members" on this forum).

Things like AVG, HJT This!, Clean Up!, Spyware Blaster, SPYADD etc...

Somehow, since I started messing with the computer, I noticed the scroll button on the mouse quit working in Internet Explorer (ver. 6.0) to scroll the text up & down while writing/reading posts.

I know it's not a hardware issue, because the scroll button DOES function in other environments. It works (by toggling through options) in the Windows Menus such as "Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display". But only in some cases. It will scroll through certain lists, but not others. It won't scroll through text in Notepad or Wordpad either.

Everything else works just fine. I know it's not Malware, as the main thing I am doing on this machine is setting up the Security. (The machine never had a problem before; I am just doing preventative stuff).

It's not a serious problem, but it is inconvenient and annoying.

Part of me suspects that it is just a setting somewhere that I need to adjust, but I don't know where it could be and cannot find it.

I searched the Forum's posts for "mouse scroll" and found a few problems, but none of them were similar to mine.

Has anyone heard of this problem before ? Or a way to fix it ?

Thanks in advance,

I have been working on a project for a few weeks and I could really use some help. I'm attaching a dummy file (example1) that is an example of how my XLS comes to me each month.

I need a macro that leaves me with the second file (example2). If the macro could just grab the Student name, then put the following info for each student all on 1 row, that would be perfect:

Child's Name | Date In | Time In | Rounded | Time Out | Rounded

Sometimes for some reason there is a student with a (Cont) after their name. I need that row deleted and just pull the times up onto the same row as other times. The example2 file might make sense.

Here are the steps I am doing manually that I hope a macro could do for me!
Un-merge cells: B10
Un-merge any cells with a child's name such as Doe, Jane
Delete any row with a childs name that has (Cont) after it such as Doe, Jane (Cont)
Delete rows: 1-9
Delete columns: A, C, F, H, I, J, M, N, O, and P
Manually move all info up to one row per student
Delete all empty rows below
See example2 as the completed file but I only moved a few of the rows per student for the sake of time.

Is there any way to do all of this with a macro?

It is driving me nuts that everytime I create a new folder that the Default layout has these columns showing up:

Name / Date Modified / Type / Size

Obviously this layout must be set SOMEWHERE.

I know that I can go to Organize / Folder and Search options / View / Apply to folders . . . but the problem is that once I have it set, and I add a new folder -- that New folder goes back to this (Name / Date Modified / Type / Size) layout.

How the heck do I stop it from doing that?

The ONLY THING I WANT is: Name / Size
.... for everything - that's it.

I'm using Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 7 and most of the time (well, some of the time) it is reasonably stable. However, I've just added quite a number of new songs to my favourite listing and it just will not sort and save the Contributing Artist column no matter which route I take to do this. I've tried to delete the Album column and then sort the Contributing Artist column but as soon as I close Windows Media Player, it reverts to sorting that again. The option to save this format isn't there before I close down. I'm so frustrated with this. I've also attempted to manually sort the Contributing Artist column (there are nearly 500 songs) but it gets itself into such a mess by not always dropping the title where I want, but by reverting to where it started or part way up or down the column.
I've got to the stage now where I'm seriously thinking about trying another type of media player, but I don't have the confidence in case I lose all my favourite music. I hope somebody can help please.

Hi all,

Basically I'm wondering if there is some way to modify the order of the columns in newly created folders optimized for music. The default order is:
Name > # > Title > Contributing Artists > Album.

I'd prefer it if was:
# > Title > Name > Contributing Artists > Album

I know this can be done on an manual and therefore small scale, but I have a large music library and would like the files within the music folder automatically sorted by track number with that column preference. Like maybe if there was a way to apply the column preference to the My Music folder and all subfolders.

Hello All,

I'm new to all of this clean up stuff, because I'm pretty cautious with computer security. I think I've gotten it out, but I want to check with the pros.

On Sunday one of those fake anti virus windows popped up. I recognized it immediately and launched a scan on my anti-virus (ESET SmartSecurity 4, fully updated) then opened up Malwarebytes, updated it, and launched that scan as well (both of them FULL scans). By the time both scans finished my desktop icons were gone, I couldn't find any documents, I was getting pop-ups all over the place. Between the two scans they collectively removed 12 pieces of spyware and malware. I didn't have the wherewithal to save the results of those scans. Luckily the popups were gone, but my docs and icons were gone along with the start folder contents and everything I considered essential. I knew something was up though, because before I shutdown I still had itunes open and saw all my music in there. So... it had to be somewhere...

I rebooted into safemode and ran both scans again. These come back with 0 items. I then rebooted again normally and ran both scans again. Then I used defraggler to defrag and ccleaner to do its thing. Then I started googling my issue. I stumbled upon unhide.exe and ran it. VOILA! My stuff came back.

But I want to be sure I'm truly free and clear. I stumbled onto you guys. Once I get through with you I'll be upgrading to Google Chrome, installing Keepass, and changing all my passwords and privat... Read more

One day last week, my computer started showing popups, when Internet explorer wasn't even open. Very strange, as this has never happened with this computer. My computer has also slowed down tremendously. I have norton, and it detected a Win32 Downloader, or something similar to that name, but I cleared it without paying attention to what it really was, now the computer is still slow, but it won't tell me what virus infects it. Today it cleaned out the Clicker f trojan, but didn't seem to help the situation at all. I live in Mexico, so it doesn't surprise me at all to have some ads that originate here. They can appear on almost any major site I visit. No big deal. Until now. Some advertisers put extremely intrusive ads on my browser pages, blinking like mad, and - worst of all, playing a short tune every few seconds. It's getting very bad. I'm sure they find me through my IP address, so I'd like to find a small app that will hide it online. My ZoneAlarm claims to hide my PC from hackers, but it doesn't hide the IP address at all. I don't know what the difference is. But I do know ZA isn't preventing those ads. I tried to download an app from, but they were terrible. Can you refer me to a free app that will help?Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

A:Need to find app that hides my IP address

I use Ad Block. It should be available for all browsers.

Hi helpful helpers,

I got that virus (Windows Recovery?) that hides all your files. It's annoying. I've gotten rid of it, but all my files are hidden and my background is blank. So.
I haven't deleted any temporary files, and I've been trying to salvage all my shortcuts. I've unhid all of my files, and they all seem to be there. However, all of the "local settings" and some of the user files are all inaccessible. It keeps telling me my access is denied and the icons show up as shortcuts with a blank for the target. Please let me know how to solve this. ALSO, Unhide.exe did NOT work.

Hello. My laptop currently has a virus that hides all the files of a certain USB drive whenever I insert it into my laptop. I tried scanning my laptop but the virus is still there. I used Norton Internet Security and Malwarebytes. Any solutions for this? I'm planning to lend my laptop to my cousins since they need it for school but I don't want to lend them a laptop that would ruin their USB devices.

A:Virus that hides all the files on my USB

If you're talking about viruses that hides files on the flash drive itself, you're in luck.

First, try scanning the flash drive for viruses using various anti-virus apps (ex. avast!, AVG, Avira, Kaspersky, etc.) If no viruses are found, try scanning your whole hard drive, and make sure that the virus definitions of the antivirus program is updated.

If it does detect viruses, whether on the flash drive or in your hard drive, delete them.

If it does not, however, proceed downloading the .zip file attached below.

Open it, and run the .exe file. No installation required.

Click the 'English' button, then click the 'Recovery the hide files' button. Select the drive that has the hidden files, then click OK.

Wait for the program to finish, then it is done!

Usually, recovered files can be found in a folder with an empty name.

Reply if the program didn't work.

Peace & Sandwiches,

New version of malware uses ?God Mode? to hide from Windows users

A:GODmode hides malware

"Users can rid themselves of the malware by first ending the associated process via Task Manager, before opening up a command prompt and entering the following string, specially crafted by the security experts at McAfee:"

"rd ?\\.\%appdata%\com4.{241D7C96-F8BF-4F85-B01F-E2B043341A4B}? /S /Q"

HAHAHA.. specially crafted?

How do you specially craft a remove directory command?

Either article author is clueless of McAfee is spewing hot air to try to make people feel like McAfee is somehow special.

I'm not sure if this is a virus or not, but at random times, the windows in Firefox or any other application will start scrolling up and down on their own.  I have tried another mouse and have decided it is not the mouse.  I had this in the past and it went away after reformatting the hard drive, but is there a way to fix this without doing that?  I have Windows XP.
Thank you.

Word - format interaction glitch w/columns, color display background

I am trying to figure out how to change the color of a Windows XP (service pack 2) window for 1 Word document only.

I am doing a tri-fold brochure for a client. Normally, on my computer, I have changed display/appearance settings so that I have a cool kind of rose color for for my windows.

(As you may know, if you don't want your Windows "windows" to have a standard white background, you can go into cntl panel/display/appearances/advanced and change the color of a "window" to one of the preset, or a custom color.)

Changing the custom settings back and forth is tricky, and I often "lose" my custom color settings. Thus, I don't want to have to change them if I can avoid it.

Therefore, when I am going to attach a formal email, I highlight the doc and choose format/background and change the color to a "professional" white before sending it. That way I retain my default color custom window settings.

However, in this case, with the columns etc. set for the brochure, as soon as I change the color the columns disappear! I know there must be a way to change the color of the window (display, background, or otherwise) just for one doc, without doing the universal "display" change for all windows as per above.

Again, the problem is that when I take the basic brochure and use "background" to change the background from my custom pink to ... Read more

hi amic,

Is the Inbox followed by the number of unread emails in brackets?
or maybe there are actually no new emails.

I think Outlook Connector is still not 100%!

I have a problem with my WMP/Media Centre.
Whenever I add new files to the folders included in the Media Libraries in WMP some of them are automatically hidden. This happens approximately 30/40% of the time and occurs with only some tracks or pictures in a given folder.
The other time this happens is when I drag album art onto albums in WMP or change the artist/album info. This has a much higher frequency and occurs almost always. I have scanned my PC for viruses with an updated version of McAfee (not the best choice, but it came free with my PC) and checked folder and WMP options.
Other than that I'm stumped.

Oh yeah, I'm running 7 Home Premium x64

A:WMP/Media Centre hides files

It's likely not "hiding" the files, they just aren't importing properly or the database isn't updating immediately.

I have used ROBOCOPY to tranfer a large file from or to a USB drive and the destination Directory on both occassions has beeen chnaged to a hidden system directoiry, which could not be seen in Windows explorer or through command line access, even with the
"Show hidden and System files" set on in the view properties window.
The command executed was ROBOCOPY {source drive} {destination drive\folder} /MIR
The command echoed all the actions performed during the copy and displayed a successful copy command summary at the end.
To enable windows to see the directory I had  to either type the directory in the explorer address bar, or use the command prompt to change the attribute of the directory as follows "attrib -h -s d:\Films", whereupon the directory was visible in windows
Can anyone suggest a way out if this wwithout the need to execute the attribb -h -s command after every ROBOCOPY command?

A:ROBOCOPY hides destination Directory

Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums.
I just performed a test using above command without any problem. I am assuming it is due to the USB drive itself, it may be infected by viruses or malware. Regarding
this, I would like to provide the following suggestions:
Use ROBOCOPY to copy files to the built-in hard drive to see if the issue occurs.
Manually copy the files to the external USB drive to see if they are hidden.

Update the security software and perform a full scan.

Format the USB drive to remove suspicious files completely and perform ROBOCOPY again.
Best Regards

If you have a hard drive you store files on, and upgrade to vista or reinstall, more than likely you will not be able to see you files from the XP system.
To fix this open the properties tab of the drive in question, and Unblock it, this button will be at the bottom of the properties window on the General Tab.

Things I've tried:
- Locking and unlocking the taskbar
- Enabling and disabling autohide
- Enabling and disabling small icons
- Uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome
- Restarting Chrome
(Note: I have not tried restarting the computer itself, as I can't, as I mentioned in another thread)

I think I may have just contracted a virus on my PC.
Whenever I insert a USB, it creates fake folder files with the original folder names that were on my usb as "shortcuts", then hides all the actual folders so I have to go to control panel 'folder options' to unhide the files or else I won't be able to see them. I'm also having issues with Microsoft word that I think is related. Whenever I try to open a microsoft word file from my email, I get the message: "The operating system is not presently configured to run this operation" which is really weird because I've never gotten this message before and I have a legitimate copy of Word 2013.
I have run a malwarebytes scan and a Windows ME scan, and both picked up nothing
I am using win 7 Vista 64 bit
Any help would be appreciated, thanks
