Hello JingleJangle, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It looks like your shortcut arrow overlay icon got messed up somehow. You can use either method in the tutorial below to restore the arrow icon. Method Two is the easiest way with the program.

Shortcut Arrow - Change, Remove, or Restore

Hope this helps,

Everytime i delete an icon on my desktop, another one becomes transparent I've been looking what was the problem couldn't find anything.

A:Icon on desktop goes transparent after deleting another icon

Are you saying you now have several transparent icons on the desktop? What happens if you click an empty part of the desktop? Do the icons go back to their original look or do they stay transparent? What happens if you restart the computer?

You could try rebuilding the icon cache.

Recently my desktop icon placement has not been able to stay put if I do a desktop refresh or a computer reboot. I have looked at many internet hits on this same topic and no solution suggested has worked. I've tried them all til I'm blue in the face!

I have done the IconCache.db thing where you can delete an existing file from the hidden ...\Appdata\Local\ directory and restart the explorer. There was no file there. Yes, I have show hidden files turned on. Restarting explorer doesn't help. Rebooting is supposed to re-create the file, but it doesn't. Resetting the colors from 32 to 16 and back is supposed to rebuild the cache. It doesn't. Still no file there. After manually placing a few icons and refreshing the desktop, it is supposed to remember where they are, but it doesn't, they just fly back to where they were before manually moving them.

This is getting to be very aggravating and frustrating. I don't know why this has started all of a sudden, and I cannot seem to find a solution from the many internet hits on the same topic.

Someone out there, please help with fixing this problem. I know I'm not the only one with it. Thanks!

A:Desktop icon placement does not survive a desktop refresh or a reboot

I am using Win 7 Home \premium.

When I had my Vista Home Premium, I had over 200 desktop icons/shortcuts.
Dam things would relocate whenever they wanted. Imagine the frustration and anger trying to find the shortcut I wanted ?
I finally came across this tutorial :
Save and Restore Desktop Icon Layout in Windows Vista - How-To Geek
I used it and it worked. If one or 2 icons ever moved, one right click will put them back where they were supposed to be.

Yesterday, while on my Windows 7, I decided to install that program as well and see if it also works in Win 7.
It does.

Give it a try and please report back.

Note : at the end there is a notice about 32-bit and 64-bit.

Just wondering why when you drag an IE http short cut to the desktop, it does not display the site logo icon. Sometimes, they will show and others not. I have had them even come and go after different sessions. I log on to Internet both through work firewall and at home on network through firewall and in motels through open and firewall protected isps.

Anyone understand how this really works and what I could possibly do to show the site logo icon to make shortcuts on desktop more visibly linked to a site other than just the default IE shortcut icon?

Thanks,

I don't know what to call the old desktop since the tile version is called Metro. But when working on the old desktop version and you want to clear everything off the screen and just view the desktop, where is the button for this?

XP had this button, but cant find it on W8.

A:Show desktop icon when working on old desktop

If you right click on the desktop you will see a selection box. Select the "view" option. You should now see a check box for "Show desktop icons" and also some of the other familiar options like XP has including alignment and sizes of desktop icons. Hope this answers your question. Also I think most users call the initial screen "Start" and the desktop is still known as just that.

Hi, I have a really annoying problem with desktop icons.
I use 2 monitors. 1920x1200 is the main dislay and 1600x1200 is another one for extended desktop. The thing is that I don't need it all the time so I'd like to switch the extended desktop on and off when I need it. Problem is that entering the ex. desktop just somehow changes the grid (it seems that the grid becomes more compressed in vertical direction). That means that it always messes my icons up. I really don't know why do the Windows change the grid when I do not change the reolution or just anything that could possibly affect the main screen. Can I do anything about it?

Thanks

//Noral desktop grid:

A:Desktop icon grid changes when using extended desktop

Welcome to Seven Forums APrince. I suspect the issue is caused by the different resolutions of the 2 screens. Does the primary desktop display revert to normal when the desktop isn't extended? (I am assuming it does). I'd suggest if you want to keep the original layout while in extended mode, that you try the Free Fences, and see if it can maintain the layout while extended. Or try IconRestorer which enables you to save up to two layouts for each resolution.

For the last two weeks every page that I surf to has the "Done, but with errors of page" icon in the bottom left corner - including this tech forum. When I click on the icon to see what the error is everything is empty - that is no error number or description. Then when I try to close that window out there is another one behind it and it just continues on like that until I shut down and reboot the computer. Also, there are 3 users sat up on this computer and on the other two users desktops sometimes a page will load but they can not click any links or the page will be completely blank.

I have followed the 5 steps listed in the First steps and the results of those steps are as follows:

Does anyone know what the icon highlighted in the screen print below is ?
It gets displayed when typing in the password on the Gmail login page.
Someone called me about it and they don't remember seeing it before.
They wonder if it might be some type of malware.

I tested this on my PC and it doesn't get displayed using PaleMoon browser.
It does get displayed in IE 11 for me.

Hi,
I'm not sure which version of Internet Explorer I have--it
came with the Windows Millenium CDs that came with the HP
computer which I bought in February of 2000.

Can someone help me with an error I keep getting that says

'Explorer has caused an error in ~7583836889.TMP. If you
continue to experience problems, try restarting your
computer.' There is also a rectangular box that
says 'close'.

This message appears within two minutes after I start
and/or restart my computer, before I've even done
anything, and if I click 'close' to get rid of it all my icons and the
toolbar at the bottom disappear, leaving me with a
completely blank blue screen. I have to use control-alt-
delete to restart.

If I leave the Internet Explorer error message alone, except for moving it
off to the side by means of the blue bar at the top, I can
use pretty much everything--but I eventually have a freeze-
up and have to keep restarting.

Do I need to use my HP system recovery disks to wipe out
whatever is causing all this? Would it be easier--and faster--than trying to sort through all of the hundreds of files that might be hiding malware?

(Another help site suggested that I have malware, whatever that is. But they gave me the address of another help site-- that doesn't work with my version of IE, which is either 4.0 or something lower, because when I went to this site it said it could not scan my computer because I did not have versio... The "no icon" icon is that icon that shows while the system is booting up, smaller than other 'normal' desktop shortcut icons. It is then replaced with the 'official' icon for that shortcut..

After removing some malware that prevented access to the internet, I found that all my desktop shortcut icons are now overlaid with that "no icon" icon.
If I drag a new shortcut icon off windows explorer, as soon as I release the mouse drag - that "no icon" icon immediately over lays the original icon.
They still work, but is untidy and makes the original icon unreadable.

I created a new user, and upon logging that user on, all IT'S desktop shortcut icons are also over laid.

What to do?

Currently Edge has no Home Page icon.  Here is a workaround for that.
Have Favorites Bar showing. Open the site used as Home Page.  Save it to Favorites Bar & name it Home Page.  Bit crude, maybe, but, it works.
(From a person in another IT Forum)

One thing, it does save back-paging twice to go from Reading View back to Home Page; now one click back to it.  (W/out this, one went to an item, article, on the HP or from it then, selected Reading View... when read would go back to article normal view then, back to Home Page)

Try downloading the 7 repair disc.

Download Windows 7 System Recovery Discs — The NeoSmart Files

Boot it and when you get to the screen saying "Install Now" - don't click that - click underneath where it says "Repair My Computer"
It will scan for installations - then click Next , select System Restore.

Select a restore point before the update.

Hope it helps.

Last week I bought a new computer that runs Vista Ultimate x64. All was fine until I tried to install Object Desktop MyColors two days ago. It didn't seem to go well but I left the program alone and hooked up my new external hard drive to use as a backup. This required a system restart and thus the problem. When my computer came back to life after the restart almost all of my desktop shortcut icons had been replaced by a generic white page icon. First I uninstalled MyObject then did 3 System Restores at different points, but to no avail. Then I tried to change the icons from the properties menu attached to each icon. This was successful in about half of the cases. Some of the remaining icons had their proper picture associated with the program in the Start or Program menus so I just dragged then to the desktop and deleted the "white paper" icon. Now I'm left with 4 damaged icons. In each of these cases the icon properties page doesn't allow the option to change the icon, this choice is grayed out. The programs are: Microsoft Word (came already installed on the new commputer); iTunes and Smart FTP (I had installed these programs several days ago, before the problem occurred); Expression Web 2 (installed yesterday after the icon exchange). None of these programs has a copy of the proprietary icon anywhere that I can find. The Start menu shortcuts are white pages, as are the icons in the Programs menu. It seems like the shortcut arrow overlay may have been improperly replaced using the XP method instead of the method for Vista. The tutorial below can help you restore the default shortcut arrow and hopefully fix the icons for you.

I run xp sp2 IE6 Comcast BB.
I had this happen before and I don't remember how I fixed it, I may have gotten comletely rid of Real. But this is a new day maybe a year or so later, NOW I do have Real Arcade again and the puky Realplayer and now again on my Comcast homepage in the lower left corner I am getting that little yellow warning Icon. Wehen I double click it I am told my page may not be dislaying right, and then when I go get details its obviously tied up with RealMedia ads and maybe Symantec ?? heres what the details say:
Line 48
Char 3
Error 'SymRealWinOpen" is undefined
Code: 0

then this which takes me nowhere:

the numbers in the long url are always different but everything around them is exactly the same.

A:My belkin icon says i'm connected, but the net explorer says page can't be displayed

raymond,

Please post your OS and ipconfig /all results here for the computer that works and the one that doesn't. You can easily do this by:

If winxp, 2k or NT:
1. Go to a command prompt and type: ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt
2. open ipconfig.txt (with notepad) and copy all then paste to a reply to this message.
3. repeat for each system.

If you are using win98 or, gasp, win95 then the command is winipcfg and you will have to copy down that info and type into a reply.

Help! When I click on the My Computer Icon it goes to the page that list all the drives. When I click on HP_Pavilion(C:) it sends me to a Search Results page. All the other drives do the same. I can right click on the icons and it will go to the icons or folders where it should be. What is going on and can I fix it? I talked with HP online and they were clueless and couldn't wait to sign off with me. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

All of sudden it seems that I am not seeing the little security icon/symbol which I recall usually seeing at the bottom of many websites. It seems like for some reason the bottom row is somehow missing - the row which has that icon as well as some others....

I tried minimizing and maximizing, scrolling down, etc. Maybe I am just expecting that symbol where it isn't supposed to be - but I tested it on a couple sites - ebay, paypal, amazon, etc. Is something different with my screen/layout setup - or what?....

I first noticed this when I started to sign up to donate for animal/pet assistance through PetSmart - a relief effort for Katrina... and before entering secure information, as I always do - I looked for the little icon and it wasn't there....

Thanks for the help!!!

A:missing security lock icon bottom of page

I figured out that apparently the status bar was missing. I just went to view and clicked status bar. So, I guess if I get to a site which should have the security icon, it will appear there. However, if I open a new window - file - new - window - that new window is missing the status bar. What happened and how can I fix it to where it should be with always just having that status bar there - on each new window I open?!?

Please help!
Thanks!

Somehow I made the Scan the default new icon, which looks awful. How can I get the Icon back to its original?

Thanks,

Hi all,

As you can see in the photo my Microsoft Outlook icon has turned into a blank page with a box in the middle.

How can I restore it to its original image?

A:Outlook icon has changed into blank page with box in middle, solution?

Have you done anything described here?

As a solution you can do the following:
1. Unpin this thing from taskbar.
2. Go to Office folder
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14
Or Program Files (x86) if you installed it there.

3. Find OUTLOOK.EXE , Right click - Copy.
4. In the same folder Right click - Paste Shortcut.
5. PIN THAT shortcut.

If you try to pin exe files itself, you will get missing icon. So you need to pin a shortcut that you will make yourself.

Hello folks,

Just like the title says, I have installed a fresh copy of Windows 7. I had lost my recovery discs, so I downloaded the official .iso image from, http://www.mydigitallife.info/windows-7-64-bit-x64-direct-download-links/ I downloaded Ultimate because my university gives it's students Windows 7 Ultimate license keys. So I figured why not! So after I create a Boot USB, I install the OS. Everything goes smoothly, until I open up C:\Windows\system32\ and I see that "Rundll32" still shows a page icon.

I checked all my desktops and they all have the same image for Rundll32!

At this point I am panicking because I don't know if all my computers are infected by malware or if something else is at fault.

My Rundll32 file is sitting at 44.5 KB.

At this moment, I am installing BitDefender, TDSSKiller, Malwarebytes, and completing Windows Updates(Obviously, I am not typing this on the infected machine). I will update this post if the programs find anything.

Edit: I think I posted this in the wrong thread. I will post this in "Windows 7" instead.

Edit: I think this is the right sub-forum.

Hello and thanks to everyone here.

Operating System is XP. PC HP DC7700 SFF 4GB RAM memory 250 GB HD. Here's the problem:
I start the machine, run the internet browser for 2-3 hours, then elements of all the pages begin to disappear. Right clicking over the browser reveals partially filled menu boxes (not all the options are present). When I minimize or close the browser, I notice that the words to icons on the desktop have disappeared, and programs won't open. An error message comes up, but the words are missing. If I don't restart the machine, there will eventually be a BSOD, which tends to vary in type but is not at its root an unusual one...something to do with ntkrnlpa.exe, which I have gotten before. If I restart, all functionality will be restored and the machine will again work for 2-3 hours.

I have had ntkrnlpa.exe blue screens in the past for which I took no corrective action. I suppose the blue screens could all be linked, and they could just be happening closer together. The signs seem to me to be pointing to RAM memory failure. Could I be correct on this? The reason I mention it is that large portions of the functionality of the machine seem to be disappearing all at once, but there are still some elements of functionality. The sign that most nudges me in the direction of faulty RAM is the fact that not all the items are missing from the right click menus.

In this light, I suppose it could be the sockets for the RAM memory or something else on ... Read more

I don't use Opera any more so I can't comment on any problems with the latest version, but you can test your RAM modules with Memtest86+ from here: http://www.memtest.org/

In order to use Memtest86+ you need to create a CD from the downloaded ISO file. You can do that with the free IMGBurn from here: http://filehippo.com/download_imgburn/

Alright, so I play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on the PC, which in my case, is a Windows 7. Ever since I made a shortcut it doesn't show up as the MW3 icon (The green 3). As you can see in the picture (link at the bottom) it's just a globe. I've tried going to icon properties and changing it through there, but it doesn't work. All my other game icons (I took them out just so you could see the MW3 icon) work fine. This is just a nit-picky thing, but it would be awesome if someone could tell me how I can fix it. You might have to zoom in (ctrl and +, or command and + on a Mac) to see it better.

Hi Everybody,
A WIN32 icon has just appeared on my desktop computer. It does not have the blue up arrow signifying that it is a shortcut. Checking the icon properties reveals that it's path is shown as C:\Users\Peter\Desktop.
The size is 207mb and contains 309 Files, 63 Folders.
I am worried that if I delete it, I could remove a huge amount of system data.
I have no idea how this icon appeared. All the other icons on my desktop have blue up arrows and definitely shortcuts but the WIN32 icon referred to above is a real mystery.
Any advice would really be appreciated.
Best wishes,
Peter

I don't know where it came from but I now have an icon on my desktop that I'd like to remove - but until I know what it is I'm afraid to do that.

It looks like a white sheet of paper and displays the Word for Window picture on it.

When I double click on it, it asks me to "choose program you want to use".

When I go to "Properties" I get a general tab with the words "C:windows\desktop.

So I assuming it has to do with my desktop. Don't know how I got it, don't know how to get rid of the icon, and want to be sure I don't lose anything by deleting it. I've been told that only those desktop icons that display a little arrow can be deleted.

Thanks in advance.

What icon is it?
How did you first create it?

Have you deleted and made a new one. Try ( I think for XP) right clicking in the address bar and dragging the URL to the desktop) or Right click on the desktop and scroll to New,then Create shortcut.

Try doing a System Restore to a date before this started.

I don't know if this is a security issue. I have an odd icon keep appearing on my desktop. In its properties it simply called 'file', it is an archive type. The appearance of the icon is like a sheet of paper with one edge folded, and three small symbols on it, that I can't make out. The name underneath the icon is like a reversed 'S' laying on it's side. I noticed it on a friends computer desktop recently, and she didn't know what it was or where it came from (I hope I didn't send it). I can delete it, but it will come back anything from hours to days later. I could attach it here, but don't know if that would be a good idea. Any ideas? Gary

I'm betting from your description that it's the backup address book for Outlook Express ... a known bug that Microsoft is supposedly working to fix ...

Everytime you add a new contact to your address book, this file appears on your desktop.

The problem started with the OE patch October 2002. Since the April 2003 patch was a Cumulative patch, it just continued to include the bug.

Although Microsoft has indicated that it knows about this problem and intends to make a patch available, they have not released one yet.

It must be a priority item for them ...

Hello Nathan, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Could you post a screenshot of this to help see what may be happening?

Is this with all shortcuts, particular shortcuts, or particular file extensions?

I have a folder? that shows up in numerous places- start up, my documents and probably others. It is labeled "Desktop", underneath that it says "configuration settings" under that "1KB", looks like a notepad icon with a cog type looking gear through the notepad on the upper right side. Does anyone know what this is for and why it shows up in more than one place? I only recall seeing it recently. Do I need it, can it be safely deleted? Thanks.

A:What is desktop icon

Here is a basic definition of a desktop.ini file:

Creating a Desktop.ini File
The Desktop.ini file is a text file that allows you to specify how a file system folder will be viewed. There are three sections in the file. The first two, [ExtShellFolderViews] and [{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}] are necessary only if you want to use a custom Folder.htt template. If you omit them, the system will use the default template.

Hi all, any help would be appreciated!
- After working on several applications on my computer (be they spreadsheet, wordprocessor, email or a game)an icon appears on my desktop. When I open it, it shows all the files on my hard drive. When I delete it the computer continues to work as usual. But it eventually re-appears.
Thanks for anything you might suggest.

So what does the icon look like? Does it have a name? Have you tried right-clicking it and checking Properties to see if there's any info about it?

The icon wouldn't by any chance be named "~" would it? If so, that is caused by a bug on one of Microsoft's security updates.

Blank desktop / NO desktop after log-on!!!
I'm using Windows XP. To make a long story short, when I opened my desktop yesterday, no desktop icon appeared and there was also no START bar/menu. In other words, what I got was a plain blank black screen with only the mouse pointer (which, by the way, responds as I move the mouse ).
Here are some more details:
- though the mouse responds with movement, I CANNOT get the options "Active Desktop, Arrange Icons, Refresh, Properties, etc" that usually appear when you do a right-click on the desktop. THis just doesnt happen.
- I could, however, launch Task Manager when doing a Ctrl+Alt+Del. From here, I could launch applications when clicking the "New Task" button. I've tried opening the usual applications that I use like MS Office, etc. and goodthing I was able to open them.So im not sure what the problem is since I can open applications via the long route
- I've tried rebooting and starting in "Safe Mode" but same problem. NO icons, no Start bar, etc.
- Safe mode runs it fine, though.

Any advice or solutions will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

A:No Desktop Icon After Log On.Please help.

If Explorer doesn't start in normal or safe mode I'd be inclined to consider malware as the cause. To the best of your knowledge, were there any malware issues - or any other anomalies- before the problem arose?

when I send a link from ie , it leaves a icon on the desktop ,it is named CUSTOM . how do i stop this from happening ?

A:icon on desktop

Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Internet Explorer (no add-ons). If it doesn't happen in that condition, then one of your add-ons is causing the problem and you need to find it by a process of elimination. If you can think of a recent one, try eliminating first.

can i put an icon on the desktop to get to a website that i use often w/out doing a search each time?Edit: Moved topic from XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

A:desktop icon

Hi Bob V

Yes you can put an icon on your desktop to get to a website.
The quickest way to do this is to open up your web browser and go to the required website. Then left click on the website url in the address bar and drag a shortcut onto the desktop (you might have to make your browser window smaller to achieve this).

On Win7 there is the little bitty bar on the right side of the taskbar that upon a click takes you to the desktop. I am used to the one that was on XP which was a bit bigger and was on the left side of the taskbar. Has anyone made a Win7 icon like the one on XP? If so, let me know what you did. Thanks,

A:Desktop Icon

well, I was just playing around on my computer as usual, and when I closed the game, all of my desktop icons looked "crappy". Nothing is as sharp as it was before I opened the game. Nothing was installed and nothing was done differently. The resolution of the icons looks to have changed, and some are a little bigger.

Any ideas on how to fix this??

A:Desktop Icon res??

Have you rebooted since it happened? Many fullscreen games will change the resolution when you start them and then change it back when you exit. If the game crashed, it might not have reverted your resolution back. Try rebooting, if this doesn't help then go in and manually change it. If this is an ongoing issue, like it happens everytime you run the game and have to change it back, try reinstalling the game. Or try to update your video driver.

A:Can't see all the icon on my desktop, pls help me now, i really need help

right click on an empty space on your desktop, a box should appear... hold your mouse over the "arrange icons", check to see if you have a tick at the side of "show desktop icons" which you ought to see .

if you click on properties at the bottom of the box, this will bring up another box where you will see a tab called "desktop" this will allow you to change the desktop settings to whatever suits you

I have Windows XP Proffessional and on some of my computer folders such as Documents,My Music and some other folders there is an Icon wich sais,"Desktop" and it has a picture of a paper and a gear attached to it.On the other computer username there is no icon like that in the folders.

Is it supposed to be there or is it not supposed to be there?

A:Desktop Icon

Is it dim? If so, it's the Desktop.ini file that keeps track of customizations made to the folder. It is only visible if you have unhidden hidden files and folders in Control Panel, Folder Options, View tab. It is supposed to be there.

I frequently insert graphics into a Word newsletter document. When I find a graphic or clipart on the Internet I will save it to my desktop so it will be easy to find. When I select "Insert" in the Word document the tab opens and I select "picture", then another window opens so I can select where the picture is located. I will then select "desktop" and locate the picture. This was working fine yesterday and when I went back into the document today to insert a "picture" the desktop icon no longer shows. To clarify, this is what shows

Favorites

Libraries
Documents
Music
Pictures
Videos

Homegroup
Computer
Gatewaiy (C
Seagate Backup Plus

Each of the above listed folders has a small icon on the left on the left. "Desktop" would show between "Favorites" and "Libraries" but has now disappeared. Yes, I could save the picture/graphic/clipart to "My Documents" or "My Pictures" folder but the desktop was much more convenient. Is there a way to restore the desktop link to this list?

I remember that originally when I first got my XP the background color for the titles underneath each icon, would take on the background of the picture on the desktop. As if the background of the text was transparent. Now the background of the text has to be defined in settings to one color. How can I get the transparency back?

Picture is of my desktop icons in their state right now.

Thanks,

Hi.

Whay Desktop Me Icon Black ?????????

Win : Vista SP2

A:help Black Icon Desktop

Hello AhrimanSefid,

You might see if rebuilding the icon cache may be able to restore your icons. If not, then you can see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened may be able to.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
