Robocopy: can MIR without PURGing directories or files on destination if they dont exist in source

Q: Robocopy: can MIR without PURGing directories or files on destination if they dont exist in source

HI, I have 2 directories on 2 different win 7 boxes. I need to copy every single new file or directory from source to destination without deleteing any file or directory in the destination that does not exist in the source, is it possible? if yes what are
the needed switches to acheive this?

Thanks in advance

Our Windows 7 backup machine uses robocopy to differentially refresh a file server backup each evening. Unfortunately, users use Microsoft Outlook with PST files, which are locked by Outlook. I often noticed that when users had not closed Outlook by the
time the backup reached their PST file, robocopy failed to update the file.
I thought that was a non-issue since such cases only happen to about 2 users each day, but I had the surprise to discover that when robocopy fails to update, it deletes the outdated files (/MIR implies /purge).
Do others get the same result? If so, can this be avoided? I did not find any option to ignore locked files in the documentation. I suppose this would not happen without /purge, but /purge is somewhat necessary (a simple directory rename could otherwise
largely inflate space usage).

Hi,
I just run the robocopy with /purge  yesterday and connect few users to destination server.
/PURGE :: delete dest files/dirs that no longer exist in source.
i didn't realize the above and run again , thought of command will copy any changes to Destination.

Now how do restore the delete files?
Also how do i run just to copy anything has changed in Source without deleting?

Hi Win7 64 pro
I have copied 2gb using Teracopy to a folder, it showed at least one where path not found.
It has no means of selecting that line and showing me the source file, I cant even copy out the address.

Its ok as along as i get OK in its test, else if I get a red warning it then doesn't offer a means of attempting that source file again. It also doesnt have a way of putting those to the top of the stack. You have to scroll through 2Gb of files to find them.

Then I managed to exit teracopy, now I havent a clue what files needs copying across.

I could do with a second prog to compare source and destination and repair any differences etc.

Any suggestions ?

I had hoped Terracopy would do this.

A:Free utility or inbuilt program to compare source & destination files

You can use the built-in RoboCopy and use it only to compare files and folders, NOT to copy anything. Start a command window (cmd.exe) and use this syntax:

robocopy "c:\tools" "c:\toolscopy" /E /L

c:\tools is the source
c:\toolscopy is the destination
/E will include subdirectories incl. empty ones
/L will only do a compare and not copy anything

I changed this in the source folder: one changed file, one new file, one new empty directory
The output from robocopy:

Newer 27 tempEMETfolder.txt
New File 26624 TestBlank.exe
New Dir 0 c:\tools\emptySubFolder\

Hi there,

New to the forum, please go easy

I've got a robocopy moving a file using /MOV from one folder to another.

Is it possible to add a second destination so that the contents of the original folder will be moved to both destination folders? How would the syntax look? (below is current syntax)

robocopy "\\source path" "\\destination path" /S /E /V /NP /MOV /XD in /R:10 /W:30

Thanks

A:ROBOCOPY - /MOV to two destination folders

Hi mate.

You could do two things:

1. You can try to use ROBOMOJO to run multiple robocopy jobs
more info here: Running multiple Robocopy jobs in one batch file

or

2. You can run two separate robocopy jobs, with 10 minute interval between them.
Check this post: One source to multiple destinations with Robocopy

Hope this helps.

I have used ROBOCOPY to tranfer a large file from or to a USB drive and the destination Directory on both occassions has beeen chnaged to a hidden system directoiry, which could not be seen in Windows explorer or through command line access, even with the
"Show hidden and System files" set on in the view properties window.
The command executed was ROBOCOPY {source drive} {destination drive\folder} /MIR
The command echoed all the actions performed during the copy and displayed a successful copy command summary at the end.
To enable windows to see the directory I had  to either type the directory in the explorer address bar, or use the command prompt to change the attribute of the directory as follows "attrib -h -s d:\Films", whereupon the directory was visible in windows
explorer.
Can anyone suggest a way out if this wwithout the need to execute the attribb -h -s command after every ROBOCOPY command?

Hi,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums.

I just performed a test using above command without any problem. I am assuming it is due to the USB drive itself, it may be infected by viruses or malware. Regarding
this, I would like to provide the following suggestions:

1.
Use ROBOCOPY to copy files to the built-in hard drive to see if the issue occurs.
2.
Manually copy the files to the external USB drive to see if they are hidden.

3.
Update the security software and perform a full scan.

4.
Format the USB drive to remove suspicious files completely and perform ROBOCOPY again.

I have a Robocopy batch file that works wonderfully when copying from Windows to a USB, NAS or server share.  I recently tried to use my Microsoft OneDrive as the target but could not get it working.  I mapped a drive using the WebDav address.
This works fine and using Windows Explorer I can create folders, etc.  When I try to use Robocopy to copy files from my Win7 PC to my OneDrive mapped drive I get Error 2.  After some testing I am finding that Robocopy will work if the folders
are already in place but if it needs to create a folder it will error.  So it seems as though Robocopy is unable to create the folders it needs to when using a WebDav mapped drive.  Why would this be?  I can create folders in the mapped drive
using command line such as "V:\md testfolder".

I'm trying to use robocopy for mirroring my most important files between two computers. Except for one issue, it works as expected.

I'm trying to copy the complete "Documents" directory. Previously, this was called "My documents" and contained for example "My pictures". Now it doesn't, and I like that, but robocopy don't. Somehow it still searches for these directories, and of course can't find them. Seems robocopy needs a fix, or am I missing out on something here?

A:Robocopy looking for my directories in the wrong place

When I use robocopy, I use it in a text based batch file. So, as long as your paths are correct in the batch file it should go exactly where you tell it to. I haven't noticed any issues doing it this way with Windows 7.

I have done this at least 5 times (i checked the permissions and everything looks the same as the source share) The problem is That the destination will become read only and i cannot take it off read only.

this is how im copying the share

robocopy C:\source D:\destination /mir /sec /r:1 /w:1

ive also tried it with /secfix ive also tried /a-:r

Hi,Just something for Microsoft or possible solution comment really...Logon script creates user Start Menu based on what rights they have on a networked master copy.ROBOCOPY.EXE is used for the copy like this:ROBOCOPY <source> <target> /MIR /MT /R:0This will create the Start Menu for the user on 1st logon, and the /MIR will update it on subseqent logons. It works well.Except for, /R:0 will immediately skip and continue if the user has no rights to a folder or it's contents. In this case, ROBOCOPY creates an empty folder which is quite annoying, regardless of other settings tried such as /S.Luckilly I have a small DLL of useful functions used by our logon scripts and one of these will remove all empty subdirectories from the specified directory so I can work around this.I can't find any combination of switches on ROBOCOPY to fix this, however, for example, XCOPY does not do this if a user has no rights to a folder.Any suggestions?!Thanks!Rob

A:ROBOCOPY creates empty directories when user running it does not have rights to a folder's contents

Hi,According to my understanding, the switch /MIR is equivalent to /e + /purge which includes the empty directories. While you configure the parameter /R:0 that specifies the number of retries on failed copies to 0, the /MIR switch will create an empty folder so as to indicates that the copy process is completed including the empty directory. Thus I recommend you to configure the parameter /R:0 to /R:1 and see how it works. If I misunderstood, please feel free to let me know. Thanks. For references:RobocopyBest RegardsDale

I'd like to use Robocopy (I'm using Xcopy now) to copy everything from the 'current' folder. It appears that Robocopy absolutely has to have a path of some sort to correctly work. In Xcopy, we were able to runXcopy *.* C:\somedirectory\If I try the same in Robocopy I get a an error"No Destination Directory Specified"Orange County District Attorney

A:Robocopy - Wildcard to copy everything from current source directory

Hi Sandy,

It's true ROBOCOPY doesn't handle wild cards, but what you're after is still possible:

Say I want this:

C:\temp> robocopy *.* c:\temp2\

I'll get the error you get - "No Destination Directory Specified"

BUT, if you try this:

C:\temp>  robocopy c:\temp\ c:\temp2\

ROBOCOPY will work and do what your after. Quotation marks can also be used in the above path references.

I suppose one of the reasons for the lack of wildcard support is the fact that ROBOCOPY actually works to exclude files types later with the /XF switch (such as "/XF *.mp3"). More here.

Hope this helps,

Hi All,

I have one folder A and have another folder B in the same drive E: I need to move all the content from folder A which are more than 2 years old to folder B. Hence when I ran the robocopy it just copied and I lost all disk space in drive E.

My question is even though I used /MOV command why it is not copied and deleted from the source?

robocopy E:/A E:/B /e /MOV /MINAGE:730

Please suggest..

A:Robocopy /MOV command copying but not deleting from source directory

I created folders Test and Test2 on drive E:, copied some files over and under two years old and tested with command

Code:
robocopy E:\Test E:\Test2 /e /mov /minage:730
Works perfect. All files older than 730 are moved, copied to destination and deleted from source. I can only think of two possible causes for your issue:System considers files to be newer than 730 days old

Let's say " 01 - come.aaa" (A space at the beginning) is the file name.
I am trying to change it to "01 - come.aaa"(without the space at the beginning).
I am coming up with this error: "Source and destination file names are the same".

1) Is this fixable? How?

2) How can I find all files on my computer (and external drives) with a space at the beginning in the filename (and of course how can I change them with this error coming up)?

3) Is it a problem to have a space at the beginning in the filename (These files will be used in Mac and Linux too) ?

Thanks.

A:Cannot Change Filename (Source and Destination filenames are the same)

A work around might be to:
1.copy the file to another location and rename it there.
2.Move the file renamed to the original location and delete the original.
3. OR rename it something similar but different. Such as your generic example, change it to, say "01-come.aaa"...no spaces.
I have no answer to find files with a space in the beginning of the name. curious, where do those come from?

Befor I reg'd I was asking purging perfetch files, I saw posts saing it was ok but did not speed up your pc. Using a registry clean up program would however, I used one once and it caused issues with programs connected to plaing TW08 (OL) and I was forced to reformat. The good reviews I saw came from those running w7 32bit and I'm running w7 64bit coukd that have been the difference.

A:Purging the prefetch files

Registry cleaners are useless and can damage the registry resulting in major problems, including BSODs.

I suggest that you leave the \windows\prefetch folder alone as well.

My 100GB photo collection has a lot of ini,thm and db files. Is it safe to delete them? They are about 1000 of them.

Thanks in advance

A:Any harm in purging ini,thm and db files from pic folders?

.thm and .db files are created by windows when exploring your folders, they contain thumbnails and if deleted they should be created automatically again next time you browse this same folder. So yes it's perfectly safe to delete them.

.ini are configuration files, probably created by a 3rd party tool (maybe a picture viewer or something similar), they are viewable and editable by hand, so you can just open them with notepad to see what's in them (the prgram creating them might be indicated). It's most likely safe to delete them too, they probably contain information about your pictures like metadata / tags and similar.

But I doubt you'll gain much space by deleting those, they should be very light (a few kb). A better method would be to use a better format for your pictures if possible. If your photos come from your camera or scanner, they might be saved in a lossless format, which usually take a lot of space. Check their extensions on wikipedia or google to see if I'm right.

Good formats for photos are JPEG (best compression, but loss in quality) and PNG (no loss in quality). For personal photos I would go for JPG and try various compression ratios. Don't worry too much about the loss in quality, it's barely noticeable when setup right. Even at the highest quality (100), you should notice a major size reduction from a lossless format. If all your photos are already in JPEG, then don't bother recompressing, you would definitely lose in quality.

Ever since then the two USB ports right next to each other wont work at all but the single one works perfectly fine. The two non-working ports dont recognize devices that work on the working port nor do they provide any power to any devices whatsoever.

Ive searched and searched and have tried these things: uninstalling the USB controllers in the Device Manager and restarting multiple times. Ive tried a complete system restore. Ive updated the BIOS via the Dell website.

Ok, I have a problem that is going to cause me to go insane... Ok my friend apparently formatted his laptop with the wrong disc and now several things aren't working due to the wrong drivers being installed. Its a Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5900, I have already been to their main site and looked at all the drivers they have posted for it. There is no Ethernet Controller!!! Thus meaning I cannot connect to the internet, otherwise I would just use a program to find all the drivers for me and that be that. I ran a scan with a program that I found that does not require a net connection to work and it showed that the driver is Realtek GBE_FE Ethernet PCI Nic. The computer runs XP, so I found the drivers relatively easy and then installed them... and they were not the ones for it because its still saying the Ethernet is not installed on the Device Manager. I used Driver Genius to find out what the driver was, Driver Detective requires a net connection to work... so lame... I've been sitting here for about 2 hours and its driving me crazy. Please if anyone can help me here I would be MOST appreciative. Thanks

Some files in source folder already exist in destination folder (Same name)
What I would like is that files existing in destination folder to be rename to f.eks filename_BAK.extension.
Eksampel.:
Source folder include. FileOne.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt
Destination folder include. FileOne.asp - (NO FileTwo) - FileTree.txt
Result. FileOne.asp (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileOne_BAK.asp) - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileTree_BAK.txt)
Now in desination folder.: FileOne.asp - FileOne_BAK.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt - FileTree_BAK.txt
Files in source folder are placed in different folders, but in same structure in destination.

Hello guys,

I am being more concerned since few days about daily suspicious network traffic in my network about the below.

Looks like UDP port 137 from my private IP contacting destination port 137 to a public IPs (one source to many public destinations). I investigated these traffic by taking into consideration about 50 + offenses and 80% scan results on these PCs didn't find anything suspicious. Rest 30% detected some PUP programs from registry and some adwares, which I believe are not that much suspicious. (Scanned by Malwarebytes and Super anti spyware)

Below is a syslog log I am posting for your reference captured by my SIEM tool sent by Firewall.

<164>%ASA-4-106023: Deny udp src Internal:172.28.169.167/137 dst External:114.80.174.240/137 by access-group "My_CSM_FW_ACL" [0xb292c4f, 0x412e8e2f]

This traffic is happening on a daily basis, and to avoid security issues we have to unnecessarily scan those machines. But is this really a suspicious traffic ? Could someone please help me on this, please. After a brief investigation, if I find something good, I can save a lot of waste work by colleagues sitting abroad scanning the machines.

I reinstalled a Canon Pixma multifunction printer/scanner/copier/fax on my son's pc. It seemed to do a bit of hick-kupping when the files were being transfered and downloaded. When the install finally came to rest and I was asked to reboot- I did, and ever since then, and afer countless uninstalls/reinstalls, I keep getting the "FOUND NEW HARDWARE WIZARD" poping-up, but it never finds anything. Best I can tell, there's nothing that requires installation and I'm looking for a phantom piece of hardware I can't put my finger on. What's also strange, and no doubt related, is the fact that when I check the "DEVICE MANAGER", I'm seeing the yellow Q-Mark over "OTHER DEVICES", and indicates that an "UNKNOWN DEVICE" is installed.

I 've tried restore points, and as I mentioned, countless reinstalls of the printer software, and all I'll get is an occasional "severe error message " saying windows had to stop because the driver it can't find cause a conflict- this again, part of the phantom device that needs installing but cant be found... FYI... the printer is a Canon Pixma multifunction and we are running XP Pro WITH SP2!

Anything to help put this wizard out of its misery would be appreciated!

Hi,

I'm new to using robocopy but I have used it for awhile with a couple of external drives to keep them in sync but using a simple command like:

robocopy g: f: /E /R:2

this copies everything from the g: drive to the f: drive including empty directories and tries 2 times for failures.

On my desktop which is a XP Pro machine as well, I've installed the Windows Resource Kit Tool which includes robocopy and am trying to do a similar thing to copy my "My Documents" directory on my c: drive to my k: drive which is an external drive on my mionet network. The copy does work fine but each time I run the robocopy command, a large number of the files get copied even though they haven't changed. I'm sure that I'm just missing something but I've tried adding things to the command line to not copy older files. Here's something that I have tried:

robocopy "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents" "K:\ImageThat\My Documents" /E /R:2 /XO /A-:A

each time that I execute this command, I get about 800 files that get copied and I don't understand why. Anyone see anything that I'm missing, or perhaps the way that I am understanding how robocopy works is the problem.

thanks in advance!

The default copy switch of robocopy is /COPYAT if you don't specify any copy options. This is the code I'm using:

robocopy C:\ D:\Backup RAMDisk.img /copyall /R:5 /W:15 /V /log:\Users\Kevin\Desktop\robocopy_log.txt

The RAMDisk.img file that I'm copying is a compressed image file. Now with that syntax /COPYAT will be used which means that it will copy all attributes of that file. Whenever I run this, I successfully copy the file but it doesn't retain the compression attribute of that file.

What could be wrong with this? Both source and destination are NTFS-formatted.

A:Backing up files using Robocopy

Although compression is indicated via a file's attributes, I'm not sure if that particular property actually transfers with the copy, even with Robocopy. If you copy to a compressed folder (folder and contents) then I would think the copy would be compressed. And if that folder is not compreesed, files that are placed there will be uncompressed (even if you are copying a compressed file to that location).

I'm using robocopy (ver XP010) on a Windows XP laptop to copy user files to another drive for backup.

robocopy "c:\my documents" "Z:\myname\my documents" /XO /M /ZB /E /MIR /log:c:mylog.txt /TEE

It creates all of the directories and subdirectories but doesn't copy any of the files. The log shows no errors - total dirs 162 copies 162, total files 1458 skipped 1458.

To minimize variables I tried using a new usb external NTFS hard drive (Z) but it still skips all of the files. I've verified the permissions and owership of the files and everthing seems in order. The problem is limited to this computer, the other computers in the group are OK. Any suggestions?

I just found out that 2 of the 6 computers in this group fail so I will be compairing files and permissions etc. to see what the two failed ones have in common against the working ones.

Hi

I've just re-organised my hard drives and I've set up a batch routine to backup my files, using Robocopy.

However, as I swapped my drives around, I've copied in the wrong direction. Robocopy has consequently deleted entire folders of important data.

The data isn't in the recycle bin.

What should I do to try and recover the data?

Thanks

A:Used Robocopy and deleted my files - how can I recover them?

Is the partition unharmed and still visible in Explorer and Windows Disk Managment?

If it's unharmed, I'd consider PhotoRec or Recuva to recover the files. Both are free.

Ontrack Easy Recovery Professional is also said to be excellent, but I think you ultimately have to pay. Maybe $79?? It will show you the files it can recover, but won't let you actually recover them until you pay.

I'm assuming Robocopy doesn't have any type of "undo" capability.

hi,

I have a standard Windows 10 build and I'm using robocopy to backup my data to an external drive. The goal is just to capture all my data so if the PC fails/gets stolen etc. I can restore my data on to another PC.

I'm doing a backup of c:\users\ as this seems to capture all my data. Are there any other folders you think I should backup?

I've excluded the 'AppData' folder as this seems to have a lot of stuff which is not data. Is that OK or do you think that should be backed up? Are there any other folders you think I should skip?

Thank you very much for your comments.

Hi all
I have just found Robocopy and it seems the perfect tool for what I am trying to do....
I make an incremental Backup on one of my PC's (Called Server-PC) every day using AOMEI backupper and I want to mirror that folder on my main PC I have been fiddling with Robocopy for hours now have Googled everything I can think of and can't find out what I am doing wrong.

First of all I Mapped my E:\ drive on My Main PC onto my Server-PC and called it Z:
Using this script --- robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "Z\ServerDriveCopy" /R:5 /s /purge /COPYALL as a test I Get
Source : D:AOMEI\
Destination : C:\Users\mike\Desktop\Z\ServerDriveCopy\

It starts and then says "There is not enough space on the disk" There is still 700gb empty on the disk! I have checked if Quota's have been enabled and they haven't so can't work this out!

I just found out there is a GUI for Robocopy so I tried that and made a slightly different script:
robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "Z:\ServerDriveCopy" /MIR /S /V /NP /Z /R:10 /W:30 (The only difference is the colon after Z !
and that goes MAD keeps repeating in the cmd window forever but no error message and no files get copied.

So I tried it without using the mapped drive which gives me :
robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "\\Main\e\ServerDriveCopy"
and that says "Access Denied" !
I can drag and drop files in explorer OK so I am stumped.

If any one can help I would be very grateful
Mike

Hi, we are migrating a very large amount of data and we are using robocopy. Everything seems to work fine but now we find  thousands of files having the time stamp reset to 1-1-1980.
After many many tests we now sure the the /B switch is causing this issue (in our case).

But we MUST use the /B switch. Otherwise we will have big problems with access denied errors. to user data.
Now my question is how to solve this issue and keep using the /B switch.
The cmd line we are using is:
robocopy "%source%" "%target%" /MIR /NODCOPY /COPY:DAT /DCOPY:T /r:0 /w:0 /mt:32 /tee /v /fft /np /TIMFIX /xa:sh /xd $RECYCLE.BIN /log+:x:\mylogs\copylog.log
Please help!!!!

Started using robocopy to do my backups. In my command lines, i can specify directories on a external drive to backup to.Some directories show up and i see everything. My most important directory " my documents" DOESNT SHOW UP. I have confirmed a backup is occuring, via log file and properties on the backup folder. I edited it down to a backup of only that folder. Log file shows good, external drive shows the "backup" root directory and properties ( size, number of files) match log file. Open up the backup folder, NOTHING LISTED. I have to run the script as adminstrator , my user is admin also, but if i run it as myself, it cant access the folder. I think im dealing with a right issue, i have edited security on the external drive, even reformatted it , still nothing shows up.

Last week I used a robocopy tutorial on this site to create a backup script, and it was working fine. Today I tried to run this script, inputting new destination information but leaving everything else the same, and now it is copying all of the folders, but none of the files.

It counts a total of 509 Dirs but 0 files--no skipped, no mismatch, no failed.

My syntax/options are as follows:
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" /E /tee /log.Public_backup log.txt
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" /E /tee /log.Training_backup log.txt
pause

Does anyone see what might be causing this problem or have suggestions?

The source folder is directory:\folder and the destination folder is directory:\folder\subfolder\subfolder, if that matters.

A:Issue with Robocopy only copying folders, not files, in Windows 7

It should default to all files (*.*), but you could put the *.* in the command to see if it makes a difference.
i.e.
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" *.* /E /tee /log.Public_backup log.txt

If that doesn't work can you post the actual commands you are using, with the real folder names ?

I want to copy the contents of pen drive to E drive. The pendrive drive is F. Now i want all the folders and files to have the same date it was as in the pen drive, when i stored .
Normally when i copy, all the files retain original date but folders get todate. Meaning less if date specific creation of folder is needed.
I heard that robocopy feature in command would give me a way to it. Reading in microsoft or in other forums, including in this forum would not solve my problem. as it is total technical in nature of using switches in command.
My specific need is date of the folders and folder in the pendrive F to be copied to E: in one new folder, say Eendrive copy .
Dcopy is one of the sub command. I want total command for this . There may be experts in this commands. Please let me know , how to accomplish this. The command help of microsoft only know to the tech experts, who knows all /\ switches. As a newbie to this subject, i do not know how to issue the command prompt command.

Decided to use Avast been happy as a clam but....I started to look into my hard drive files with a program called Disk Investigator. I found several files that have been there since 2001 they are Norton related and pretty large taking up valuable cache space. Since I don't run Norton, how can they be removed ?

When attempting to move files from one drive to another I'm getting this error:

Destination Path Too Long

The file name(s) would be too long for the destination folder. You can shorten the file name and try again, or try a location that has a shorter path.

What I don't understand is that the destination path would be identical to the source path, only on a different drive. The files causing the problem are within a sub folder but the initial copy was done by dragging a folder from the root of the source drive
to the root of the target drive. This was done locally not over a network. So the paths should be identical except for the drive letter.
After renaming the root folder to something slightly shorter I was able to move the files.
What I don't understand is if these files have a path that is too long for the filesystem (both drives are NTFS) how were they created at all?
Thanks.

Hi, I recently started having a problem with my Explorer settings, I think. When typing out a path, starting with a drive letter and then directories and so on, the list of available files\directories of the current path are not listed in a dropdown autocomplete-like list. I don't know why, but it just stopped. I have this problem in both the "run" dialog, and in Windows Explorer. I recently (about 2 weeks ago) installed XP on this machine, and it's still performing the file indexing (cidaemon.exe), in case that means anything as far as XP being aware of all the folders and files for each directory. I'm not sure how the indexing works, I just thought that might be relevent. Thanks for any help, and I'll gladly answer any questions about the problem. mattmem(Moderator edit: thread moved to more appropriate forum. jgweed)

You _might_ have to restart windows for this to take effect (I didn't have to when I tried it out).

I've copied jpg files from my camera to the 'pictures' directory. The JPG's all copy over, and then within the directory that I copied them to the directory starts filling up with sub-directories with the same files names plus the extension JPG.files. Each of the sub-directories has two jpg files in it that are both two different sizes but the same picture.
I deleted all the duplicate directories, closed the original directory and opened it back up again and all the sub-directories duplicated once again....all on their own. Is there a setting in windows that is causing these directories to be automatically created? I've attached a section of the directory so you can see how it looks.

Hi. My final project has main.exe, config.txt and template.xlsx files. I would like to somehow zip all these into one installation file such that once the user double click on it, it will extract main.exe onto the desktop; config.txt in c:\ and template.xlsx in c:\...\Documents.

Please advise. Thank you.

A:how to zip then unzip files to different directories...

You could create a self extracting exe using 7-zip and include a batch file that you instruct the users to run after. The batch file would then move the files to their corresponding folders.

Or have the self extracting exe run the batch file automatically: windows - Is it possible to execute a file after extraction from a 7-Zip self-extracting archive (SFX) archive? - Super User

Haven't tested myself though.

I have used a recovery program and it did find the short cuts to them but not the files.

Data files like documents, music, videos, and such, should be no problem. If you had any programs installed on the second drive, they will need to be reinstalled.

Try using Windows 'logo key' +F, you can perform a better search.

As a side note, Win 7 has a very good "repair" function, it's not Win XP.

It is a permissions problem. If you go to the folder that contains the photos and add your user to the owners group with modify permissions you should be able to copy/move them. If not right click one of the files and see who the onwer is

I have two hard drives, one is 200GB the so-called main one I am currently using and the older is the smaller 40GB drive.

The issue is I have many of the same programs on the smaller drive as on the newer bigger drive. If I uninstall the those from the older drive, will it affect the newer installations on the main drive.

Will a "delete" be all that is necessary?

A:Program files folder in two directories

Check your Add/Remove programs Control Pannel to see if you have multiple versions showing installed there.

Also, you could right click on one of the programs in each directory and check to make sure that the link to the file is, or is not, referring to the same file. One of the two may just be shortcuts.

If you are referring to system files, just make sure that you would only remove the files that are on the drive that do not contain your OS.

Do an advanced search in the forums for the terms DATA RECOVERY in the titles and choose any date as a parameter and you will find many threads where free tools are suggested.

Go to the top right of this page and click the down-pointing triangle next to "Search". Choose "Advanced Search".

Hello there
When I download AVIs and other movie files and try to rename them or movie them to different directories, I sometimes get the message that I can't do this because it's being used by another program, so to close any programs that may be using it and try agian. Most of the time it works if I just leave it alone for a while and try again, but there are a few files that I can't move or rename no matter how many times I try. I know they're not corrupt, because I can play them, I just can't move them. When it gives me this message, there aren't any programs that could be using the files, but I close everything anyway, even all the processes in the windows task manager that aren't necessary, and it still says a program is using it. I don't think it's spyware-related either, 'cause I just ran Spybot again and nothing came up. I'd really appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thanks so much! Have a lovely weekend!

OK this is going to be a long one, so let me just jump in.

We are working with windows 7 Service pack 1.

User is working on files and folders on their computer. They shut the computer down for the night, and in the morning they boot up, go to my documents and notice it looks wrong. The very first directory is missing. Over the next couple of days, they notice that directories are slowly vanishing in perfect alphabetical order. Unfortunately one of them that vanishes is critical.

An hour after they notice its gone they have brought it to me. I look into it and its obviously gone. I do the basic thing, they accidentally dragged it into another directory or location. I hunt for it in every directory, drive, alternate location etc, no good, its not there. I can click on the recent tab and I can see the missing directory in the list, I can view its properties and see its location in my documents. But clicking it tells me the location this link refers to no longer exists and asks me if I want to delete the shortcut.

I check the recycling bin, not there.

So I think virus. I scan it. Nortons, Superantispyware, malwarebytes, spybot, Hitman pro, a few others, all they find are the usual cookies. I run scans for rootkits, nothing is found.

I use some tools to search for the files, nothing is found. I turn on show hidden files, I turn on show system files. I install three separate data recovery programs and scan the drive sector by sector a half dozen times.

The directory is NEVE... Read more

Here's what's going on:

Had several programs open last night, Word, Firefox, iTunes. I had just downloaded some new music from amazon.com. Went to iTunes to "add a new folder" to search for music. When the dialog box opened to select the folder I noticed about half of my sub-directories under My Music were not showing up. So, I closed the dialog box and tried again only to find only four subdirectories showing up. Time to re-boot! When the computer restarted everything was missing, all programs, all files and almost all of my sub-directories.

What I did:

Well, Norton AntiVirus still worked (hmmm, virus anyone?) so I did a scan and it came up with nothing. Checked my C drive properties and found it still showed 67.2GB in use which makes me feel a little better. Tried a System Restore twice to no avail. Everything is still missing. Did a CHKDSK and Memory Check and everything passed. No errors found. CHKDSK did show 31188 files on the disk. Went to bed.

Now what?:

Currently at work so just seeking advice for when I get home. A friend at work gave me AVG Rescue to try. Don't know if I should do this first or check into the "too many programs in the start menu" issue I've read about. All I really care about are my photos and my music. If I can get those back and back them up I'll just do a System Recovery (after I run AVG) and reload everything.

Anyone have any advice? Thanks.

A:Everything is missing, Programs, Files, Directories

Download and run malwarebytes, updated and at full scan
If negative, type the name of the program in search, if still on your system it will show.

System restore will not get personal documents back.
Go back a week with back up and restore and all your stuff will be back like before the problem.

I hope someone can help or explain this problem for me.

I have a DVD I made of my website. The website is constructed with every thing relative to the local system so that it will operate from the DVD.

My XP system has 2 DVD drives. One is a read only (E:) and the other is a R/W drive (F:). The problem is that on the read only drive ALL the directory and file names are in upper case and they are truncated to 8 characters, DOS files? For instance ThisIsanImage.jpg wil be THISISANI.JPG and index.html will be INDEX.HTML.

If I copy the files to my hard drive the result is the same. Of course the html involved will not function with the case of names and directories being changed.

However, if I put the DVD in my R/W drive the directory names and file names are correct and in mixed case with names longer than 8 characters. The website works fro this drive and copies to my hard drive ok. I have never run into this before.

Any one know what's going on. Do I have a setting some where in XP that I don't know about.

Your assistance is most welcome as I want to be able to send this DVD to other people, but I can't be confident that they won't have a problem.

Regards,
SD

I am having an issue where my right click / context menu is automatically closing after being opened while using Windows 8.1 x64 Professional, but only on one of my machines currently running Windows 8.

I can reproduce the issue relatively reliably (maybe 50-70% of the time) on the problem machine by taking these steps:

1. Select an item (file, directory, etc) inside Windows Explorer
2. Left click another item, selecting it
3. Very quickly (very small fraction of second, but clearly after the left click has been released), right click, opening the Context Menu
4. The context menu will close automatically after another fraction of a second

Another item I noticed is that the ribbon will update to match the new file type (assuming a new file type is selected) at the same time that the context menu is closed.

I have all non-windows shell extensions disabled through nirsoft's shellexview (including the explorer.exe or full windows restart after making changes), and I am thoroughly stumped as to why this might be happening. Any other suggestions / thoughts? Is there possibly something invalid with my HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT keys which may be causing this?

I am working on a Systems Programming Program in C. I hope that you can help me. I can open a directory and print the files inside the directory. However, for every file that it prints, it says that it is a "DIRECTORY" file and has permissions of "2700".

1. I need to open a given COMMAND LINE argument directory and then print all of the files that are in the directory,
2. print whether they are directory or regular, etc. and
3. print their mode.

I am getting the same output for each file though. Can you look at my code and see why it might be printing the same for all? These are not all directory files.

THE OUTPUT when I run the file:

------------------------------------------
The directory testme contains the following:

File . is a Directory file
The mode of . is 2700,
File .. is a Directory file
The mode of .. is 2700,
File jane is a Directory file
The mode of adam is 2700,
File bob is a Directory file
The mode of jim is 2700,
File test.c is a Directory file
The mode of adam.c is 2700,

#include <stdlib.h>
#include <fcntl.h>

#include <sys/types.h>
#include <sys/stat.h> /* stat(), etc. */

A:C System Programming (Directories/Files Status)

I think the basic problem is that you always perform the stat call on the filename supplied as an argument, rather than on each filename read from the directory entry (entry->d_name). Rather than printing the filetype of each file in the directory, you are printing the filetype of the filename parameter for each file you find in the directory.

Hope this helps.

I have a rogue employee in my office.
Long story, but can't get rid of him just yet.
Confirmed he's running a business from inside my business.
Confirmed he's deleted a directory where I carelessly stored evidence of his internal theft from the business in the $30k range.
Confirmed activities on Craig's list/gay/porno activities.
ISP shut me down a few months ago for "spam" coming from our office.
We just installed a key logger to try to get info.
His office computer connected to mine via a switch.

Noticed today that he's installed IObit's file/folder locker.
I need to:
1. locate locked files and folders.
2. then one of the following:
open them
delete them
copy them for further analysis
Any help would be appreciated.

PS: Clearly, I'm not very bright. You'd think I'd have better security and daily backups.

My problems first started when I noticed that I could not access certain websites through my google chrome and internet explorer browsers. This occurred after I wen to a website which seemed to mimic a virus scan program. Usually I just exit these sites if it asks me to click something, but for some reason I treated it like a regular antivirus app and complied. I think this is where I contracted a virus. After that I have tried many things at the recommendations of many different help sites regarding viruses. One of which recommended that i delete scvhost.exe from the system32 directory from a safe mode command prompt. After that my computer has really not functioned appropriately at all. i have also used iobit security 360,regcure,winupdatefix, and trojanremover(all of which come up error free).

I've tried 4 of the top security apps that were recommended to remove 2 stubborn folders (each folder is listed & described below). Recently, the latest versions of the following applications failed to delete the corrupt or inactive folders/directories: MoveOnBoot, Eraser, Unlocker and LockHunter.

So would anyone please tell me how to fix or remove these directories via the Command-line interface or with an application able to forcefully remove corrupt folders or inactive files? They're so corrupt that when they've been clicked, the computer screen freezes (the sand-timer symbol appears everytime I even double-click to open these folders).

Delete Folder 1: It contains only 1 file > an image-file.
Delete Folder 2: It appears to be an empty folder (if you notice the 1st couple of screenshots below, you'll see "Delete Folder 2" appears completely empty. And my computer folders have been set to show all hidden files).

All hidden files are set to be displayed in my folders, and I've proved that my Device Manager shows no signs of missing or damaged devices that would be significant to that I/O device error message that shows up each time I attempted to delete the folder that contains a corrupt image-file (see "Delete Folder 1").

Hi,

I am new here and would like some advice with moving the Users and Program Files directories on a clean installation of Windows 7 Ultimate.

My computer has a 60Gb SATA2 Solid State Drive which I am installing the OS and I have 2 640Gb SATA3 hard drives, one of which I want to use for both users, program files and program files (x86).

I have read and tried many different approaches and I would prefer using a 'symlink' to achieve this rather than any registry hacks, as I have read that a symlink has fewer side effects.

I would appreciate if anyone could provide me with any help on this.

If it is any help my OS drive letter is 'C' and the location I want to move the folders to is 'Z'. In system recovery mode the drive letters are 'F' and 'C' respectively.

Thank you all for you time.
I look forward to hearing fro you.

Regards,
Andy

A:Moving Users and Program Files Directories

Hello rezurrection, welcome to Seven Forums!

Once programs/apps are installed they cannot be moved, if you want to install the prog/apps to another location then create another folder on the target HDD to install them to; you cannot move the Program Files / Program Files (x86) folders as it will cause instability.

You can move your user files, have a look at this tutorial at the link below.

Hello,
I encounterd a really strange problem after updating iTunes to its newest version 11.4; but let me explain better.
I opened iTunes and a box pops up saying that there is a new update ready to install. Then I pressed ok, the update started to be installed (it took a few minutes!) and as it finished it asked me to restart windows.
I restarted windows and a box appeared before loading the usual desktop screen: it was saying my version of Windows 7 is not authentical (?!). I chose the option "remind me later" (or whatever), the desktop appeared and I firstly noticed the wallpaper was the "default" one of Windows 7 (it substantially removed my wallpaper).
But things get worse the more I navigate on the pc: appearently all the files have been removed. And with that I mean ALL the files, not only the music library, but also the documents, the videos, ecc.

I was quiet desperated when I went on the "Computer" screen, and I saw that the space on the disk was the same as before the iTunes update. Then I navigate through Computer/C/Users and I noticed there were THREE folders: Administrator, Administrator.CCT-20140822GTQ and Public, the first two both with a "lock" symbol on the icon.
If I go in the first folder, Administrator, I can see and access all the files in the usual folders (Documents, Desktop, Download, ecc.). In the "Administrator.CCT-20140822GTQ" folder there is nothing, and it's like my laptop navigates/shows m... Read more

I have been having numerous problems with windows 7 pro lately.  While checking folders in safe mode I found in the program files and data directories, there were windows NT folders listed with a  creation date of 2009 and were locked
so I could not open, NO security tab was visible when opening properties.

I know that vista did have some, does 7?  If so, is there a list of what a default windows 7 x64 pro install should have?
If they do not, then How do I handle them when found?

Hello Again,

I am the administrator and only "user" on my new Windows 8.1 laptop.

Two questions:

Firstly, I want full control/access to ALL the files and directories on my computer.

I've turned on "show hidden files" in the control panel but still get the access error shown on the attached image.

Secondly, how do I change from icons to details when viewing a folder? This was easy in XP but I can't seem to find the right place on W8.1

I know that the answers are out there on the WEB but it seems to take ages to search through all the results of a web search to find the relevant answer.

Maybe you could point me towards some good Windows 8.1 explanatory websites so that I don't have to keep posting here with basic questions.

I can't even access "My Documents"

Thanks in advance,

greetings everyone and thanks for letting me join this cool site.

I have several computers on a small network with multiple users setup on them - all windows xp machines. Each user profile collects temporary files in a temp directory that is located in:

c:\Documents and Settings\user01\local settings\temp\
c:\Documents and Settings\user02\local settings\temp\

I would like to write a batch file that would go through each user profile and delete all of the temporary files in each temp directory. Users are added and removed occasionally so I need the batch file to be smart enough fill in the username by itself without me having to edit it each time a user is added or deleted. I plan to run it as a scheduled task so the batch file will be located in the root of C:\ (c:\del-tmpfiles.bat)

I've played with it from the cl a little bit but haven't been able to come up with anything that works yet. Thanks in advance for any tips.

Welcome to TSG!

This will delete the files and folders in each user account.
Files in use will not be deleted
Files in the Temp folder that are hidden will not be deleted.
(Those can be included if you want, change DEL /F /Q to Del /A:H /F /Q).
Hidden Folders and their contents in the Temp folder will be deleted.
(Those can be excluded if you want).
Code:
@Echo Off
PushD C:\Documents and Settings
For /F "Delims=" %%I In ('Dir /AD /B ^|Findstr /I /V /C:"All Users" /C:"Default User" /C:"LocalService" /C:"NetworkService"') Do (
@Echo Off
PushD C:\Documents and Settings

If Exist "%%I\Local Settings\Temp" (
PushD %%I\Local Settings\Temp
For /F "Delims=" %%A In ('Dir /AD /B') Do RD /Q /S "%%A" >Nul 2>&1
Del /F /Q *.* >Nul 2>&1
PopD
))

EDIT: I added a check to verify the Temp folder exists. If it doesn't, this could start deleting files unexpectedly.

FreeCommander (not compares subfolders recursively)

Have you got any software name or one script to find my not copied file?

Thank you.
Note: Unstoppable Copier saves every file name in one log file but there are 35000 line file names. Successfully copied files log line contains - OK character string at the end of the line.

Hi guys
I wonder if anyone out there can suggest a way for me to take a folder full or 100,000+ files (all the same file type) and divide them up in to folders with just 10,000 files in. Our backup tool doesn't like large folders, so I want to create 'parta', 'partb' etc. in a single parent directory.
When we need to restore we'll need the opposite CMD command so that all files end up in one directory.
We can try a 'copy' command first to the backup device in these chunks, if that doesnt work we may need to 'move' the files to folders first.
I've had a good look around and cant see a way to do this myself. The file naming is sequential, i.e. 000001.tif, 000002.tif
Many thanks for any suggestions

I found something a little unexpected when using Windows 7 backup. I had thought that after doing a full backup followed by several incremental backups over time I could get a crash and a restore would result in the same file structure that was present at the time of the latest incremental backup. Indeed I thought that the point of the backup utility was to recreate your data in the same form as the last backup. It seems this isn?t so. What I found was the following. I have files and directories say all under a parent directory and I do a full backup of the parent directory. Then I reorganize things by moving some of the files and directories under the parent into another directory under the parent. Then I do an incremental backup. When I restore to this latest backup, any file or directory that had been moved now appears in two places!! It appears in its original location under the parent before it was moved and it also appears in its final correct location under the directory into which it was moved. Ergo, the restored parent directory now contains duplicate files and directories which were not present at the time of the latest incremental backup. I was surprised to learn this since I thought the point of the backup was to be able to restore to the same file structure present at the time of the last incremental backup. It seems if you want to do that, then you need to do only full backups which take a long time of course. Is this the correct operation for Windo... Read more

A:Restoring a backup results in duplicated files and directories!

For this and many other reasons I don't rely upon Windows backup, except for a baseline image stored after install and setup.

For my User folder files, I have found the easiest way to backup and sync them at the same time to my various PC's is using this method I'm a year into getting ready to write up as a tutorial: Sync, Backup and Store your Files to the Cloud with Skydrive - Windows 7 Forums

If you'd want to avoid the cloud even though it's free for 7gb (25gb if you got the original offer) and dirt cheap for more storage, you could do the same to another drive using SyncToys which works terrific with the Win7 scheduler: Schedule SyncToy to Run Automatically With Task Scheduler in Windows 7 - How-To Geek .

This excellent tutorial by our expert Colin explains more fully SyncToy - Backup User Data - Windows 7 Help Forums.

Another method to consider is having a separate data partition to move your User folders onto. User Folders - Change Default Location. Then if you need to restore C from image you'd have your data waiting current and safe in its own partition. In that case you'd want to possibly use Skydrive or SyncToys to back it up to the cloud or another HD.

Also be aware that if you use Win7 backup imaging it will want to include the data partition in the image if it includes the User folders (System files) so either use another app like free Macrium - Image your system, or instead of moving User folders, simply copy them there and rightclick to link each ... First of all HijackThis needs to run from a folder of its own. Right click on an empty space on the desktop choose New>Folder to create a folder. Name the Folder HijackThis. Drag and drop the HijackThis.exe into this new folder.

I notice that you are using some p2p file sharing programs like uTorrent and PeerGuardian. I would like to warn you that the nature of P2P filesharing is so that even if one is using a "clean" program, many of the files downloaded from non-documented sources have the potential of being infected. So, regardless of whether one is using a "clean" program, one may still be prone to infection by malware because more than half of all files available for download from peer-to-peer networks have been deliberately infected with some form of malware. I recommend that you remove it from your system via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

I have a PC that evidently has this virus that destroys hard drive system files and sub-directories. My question is, from your experience, can this be repaired or does this generally require a reinstall?
I slaved the and it passed Crystal Disk Info's test. I am imaging it with GetDataBack. Once that is done I am hopeful that antivirus software can fix hard drive system files. Anyone have any insight?
